NPP is not divided over selection of Bawumia’s running mate – Dan Botwe

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, the Campaign Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Dan Kwaku Botwe, has announced that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will soon convene with the National Council of the party to initiate the process of selecting his running mate for the upcoming elections.

Mr. Botwe emphasized that the NPP remains unified in the selection of the running mate. Speaking to journalists at the inauguration of the Ashanti Region NPP campaign team, he stated, “we are not divided at all, we have had successful polling station elections, successful electoral elections, successful constituency elections, successful regional elections, successful national elections, and successful presidential elections, we are united and we will do it at the right time. We have done it before in 1992, 96, 2000, 2008, we did it, so it is not an issue at all.

He further clarified, “At the appropriate time, the presidential candidate will meet the national council and we shall have a discussion and we will name the running mate, so far as I am concerned there is no contest for a running mate.”

Meanwhile, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), the Ashanti Region Chairman of the NPP, assured the party of breaking the 8-year electoral cycle.

“Dr Bawumia will win the elections, and we shall break the 8,” he said.

Minority opposes involvement of private sector in Saglemi Housing Project

The opposition in Parliament has vehemently opposed the government’s proposal to collaborate with a private developer to address the issues surrounding the Saglemi Housing Project.

This stance follows the revelation by the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, that an estimated $100 million is needed to make the area suitable for occupancy.

During a visit to the project site on Tuesday, Oppong-Nkrumah outlined the government’s plan to engage a private partner within five weeks.

“I gave instructions to the technical working group that within the next five weeks, it should go ahead with an international expression of interest that is designed to attract private developers who can come in and complete this project for us so that we can put it to use.”

However, the Ranking Member on the Works and Housing Committee, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, expressed reservations, alleging that the government aims to transfer the Saglemi Housing Project to its political allies.

Asamoah further criticized the current administration, stating, “the only thing is that they just want to reduce the price, and then they will sell it to their cronies. They are saying, Oh, we are bringing in partners here, and at the end of it, it is their people that are going to come in.”

He further criticized the current administration, claiming, “If you go out there, all state lands and every property are going for sale under the NPP administration. Every property, landed property, is going for sale. Let’s see the end of the NPP administration, and we will see the rot,” citinewsroom.com quoted him.

Initiated in 2012 during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s tenure, the Saglemi Housing Project aimed to build 5,000 housing units.

However, the project has been embroiled in controversy, with allegations of financial mismanagement leading to its suspension.

“I gave instructions to the technical working group that within the next five weeks, it should go ahead with an international expression of interest that is designed to attract private developers who can come in and complete this project for us so that we can put it to use.”

“The only thing is that they just want to reduce the price, and then they will sell it to their cronies. They are saying, Oh, we are bringing in partners here, and at the end of it, it is their people that are going to come in.”

The three MPs allegedly being considered as Bawumia’s running mate

Leading up to the December 2024 general elections, speculation is rife regarding the potential vice-presidential running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to asaaseradio.com, attention is drawn to three NPP members, all serving as cabinet ministers and holding parliamentary seats.

These contenders include Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, representing the Bosomtwe Constituency and serving as the Minister for Education; Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, representing the Manhyia South Constituency and serving as the Minister for Energy; and Bryan Acheampong, representing the Abetifi Constituency and serving as the Minister for Food and Agriculture.

A striking commonality among these potential vice-presidential candidates is their Christian faith and their origins in the southern regions of Ghana.

This alignment mirrors the NPP’s historical practice, except for 1996 when it formed an alliance with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), ensuring a balance between Christian and Muslim representation.

Typically, the NPP’s presidential ticket features candidates from either the northern or southern regions, often from Akan regions like Ashanti and Eastern.

Given Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s background in the North East Region, selecting any of these candidates would uphold the party’s commitment to maintaining this historical balance.

Among them, Dr. Bryan Acheampong stands out as the youngest, born on November 27, 1972, at fifty-one years old.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s diverse background encompasses military service, entrepreneurship, and academia, showcasing a versatile skill set.

On the other hand, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, born on May 23, 1968, is currently fifty-six years old, while Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum will turn sixty on April 9, 2024.

Each candidate brings extensive experience and expertise to the table. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, renowned in education, has founded charter schools in the United States and held various educational roles.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a medical doctor, has held prominent positions in healthcare and government, including a role in President Akufo-Addo’s cabinet.

Video: Babies’ survival at risk as ‘dumsor’ plunges Tema General Hospital

Amid the ongoing power crisis plaguing the nation, a disturbing video has surfaced on social media revealing the dire consequences of the electricity shortage on healthcare delivery, particularly at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Tema General Hospital.

The video, which circulated on GhanaWeb, portrays the ward submerged in darkness due to the absence of electricity supply. Although the exact date of the recording remains unclear, a voice believed to be that of a hospital staff member provided context.

In the video, the staff member lamented the outage, highlighting the critical situation faced by newborns relying on medical equipment like the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine.

She expressed concern over the lack of essential equipment like flow meters, warning of the heightened risk of losing multiple infants if power was not restored promptly.

Furthermore, she disclosed that the unit was operating at full capacity, with approximately ten babies in critical condition.

“There is lights out here at the Tema General Hospital. This baby is on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) and all of it have gone off. While there is oxygen available, there is no flow meter to connect… If we don’t get light in few minutes, the probability that we might lose a lot of babies is high,” she stated.

This footage sheds light on the harsh reality of the power crisis and its detrimental effects on healthcare services.

Despite growing public demands for a load-shedding schedule to help citizens cope with the situation, both the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana have remained firm in their stance, rejecting the need for a timetable.

In a recent interview, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh dismissed calls for a schedule, suggesting that those advocating for one should create their own if they believe “dumsor” exists.

His remarks have drawn criticism from some quarters, with many labeling them as insensitive to the suffering of the Ghanaian populace.

Hearing for Dafeamakpor’s writ challenging parliament’s ministerial approval slated for today

Later today, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a writ filed by Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Etse K. Dafeamekpor, seeking to restrain the Speaker of Parliament and the Chamber from vetting and approving certain ministers of State referred to the House for consideration and appointments.

Dafeamekpor is also seeking a declaration that any ministerial appointment not subject to prior parliamentary approval violates Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

Filed on March 18, 2024, against the Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney General, the legislator argues that “a Minister of State shall be appointed by the president with the prior approval of Parliament.”

He contends that the president’s failure to refer some reassigned ministers to Parliament violates constitutional provisions.

According to EIB Network Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, a panel of seven justices is expected to handle this constitutional matter.

The plaintiff seeks 11 reliefs, including seven declarations and four orders. These include directing the President to submit to Parliament for approval the names of ministers whose appointments were revoked or terminated on February 14, 2024, and who were subsequently reassigned to other ministerial offices.

Additionally, Dafeamekpor seeks an interlocutory injunction restraining the Speaker of Parliament from vetting and approving the nominees until parliamentary approval is obtained for the ministers whose appointments were revoked.

He also seeks a perpetual injunction to prevent the Speaker from vetting and approving nominees until parliamentary approval is obtained for the reassigned ministers.

“An order directing the President of the Republic of Ghana to submit to Parliament for approval, the names of the Ministers of State and the Deputy Minister of State whose appointments were revoked or terminated on the 14th of February, 2024 and who were subsequently supposedly re-assigned to other Ministerial and Deputy Ministerial offices for purposes of appointment as Ministers of State and Deputy Minister of State.

“An order of interlocutory injunction restraining the Speaker of Parliament, the 1st Defendant herein, from proceeding with the vetting and approval of thenames of the nominees of the President submitted to Parliament until the requirement that a Minister of State shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of Parliament is satisfied in respect to the Ministers of State and the Deputy Minister of State whose appointments were revoked on the 14th of February, 2024 have been re-assigned new Ministerial and Deputy Ministerial offices.

“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Speaker of Parliament, 1st Defendant herein, from proceeding with the vetting and approval of the names of the nominees of the Presidential submitted to Parliament until the requirement that a Minister of State shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of Parliament si satisfied in respect to the Ministers of State and the Deputy Minister of State whose appointments were revoked on the 14th of February, 2024 and have been re-assigned new Ministerial and Deputy Ministerial offices.”

NAM1’s lawyer commended us in a letter – Investigator to Court

In the ongoing trial of Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1, the investigator has rebuffed claims from the accuser’s lawyer of shoddy work, affirming the professionalism exhibited by the investigative team.

DSP Charles Nyarko, the 8th Defence Witness, refuted accusations of incompetence, stating that the investigation was conducted meticulously, prompting commendation from the accused’s counsel.

Despite cross-examination challenges from lawyer Kwame Boafo Akuffo, DSP Nyarko maintained the integrity of the investigation, highlighting the absence of independent verification regarding the sum of money mentioned in court.

Acknowledging the absence of the commendation letter in his witness statement, DSP Nyarko defended the team’s impartiality and highlighted their neutral approach to the case.

Regarding Menzgold Ghana Limited’s representation to investors, DSP Nyarko clarified that while the investigation didn’t establish direct communication regarding SEC authorization, the nature of the representation implied legitimacy.

The trial commenced on December 20, 2023, with several witnesses called by the prosecution, including an engineer, sales manager, businesswoman, miner, trader, and businessman, culminating in DSP Nyarko’s testimony on March 26, 2024.

With the prosecution’s case concluded, the High Court has directed Defence counsel Kwame Boafo Akuffo to submit a no-case filing by April 15, with the prosecution responding by May 6.

“I am suggesting to you that the sum of money bandied about in your evidence-in-chief does not have any independent verification before this court,” lawyer Kwame Boafo Akuffo put to the witness.

“Our team did a very neutral job without any bias involved in this case,” the investigator stated, “My lord, to the extent that counsel (Mr Kwame Boafo Akuffo) for the accused wrote a letter of commendation for the team for doing a good job,” the witness told the Court.

“However, as I mentioned earlier, the representation made between A2 (Menzgold Ghana Limited) and our complainants, that it had a clear and qualified right to deal in gold suggested that our complainants were dealing with an entity authorized to do such a business,” the investigator told the court.

Justice Ernest Owusu Dapaa will hear submissions from both parties on May 14 before issuing a ruling.

NAM1, alongside Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited, faces 39 charges including operating without a license, fraudulent inducement, and money laundering, involving approximately GH¢340,835,650.

Maintaining his innocence, NAM1 is currently on bail of GH¢500 million with four sureties.

  • Running mate selection causing tension in the party – NPP member

Running mate selection causing tension in the party – NPP member

Founder of Patriot Ghana, a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group, Kwesi Korang, claims that the process of selecting the party’s running mate has caused division, exacerbating existing rifts within the NPP.

His remarks differ from those of Dan Botwe, the campaign chairman of the NPP, who has denied allegations that pressure exists on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, to choose a running mate.

Korang insists that there is pressure on the presidential candidate to finalize his running mate, leading to internal discord within the party.

Botwe maintains that there is no division within the party and that the announcement of the running mate will occur at the appropriate time.

In contrast, Mr Korang, speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, asserts that there is a power struggle over the running mate selection process.

He suggests that the Vice President is facing pressure to choose a candidate from the Ashanti Region, a situation that has exacerbated party divisions as members vie for the position.

Korang warns that if not addressed properly, this situation could jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.

He recommends that the Vice President consider candidates from outside the Kumasi region to avoid alienating certain party members.

Furthermore, he cautions against selecting a running mate solely based on regional considerations, as this could lead to resentment among party supporters.

Instead, Korang advocates for choosing a running mate based on competence, skills, dedication, and the ability to attract votes necessary for the NPP’s victory in the elections.

“We are not divided at all. There is no sign that we are divided.

“We have had successful polling station elections, successful electoral area elections, successful constituency elections, successful regional elections, successful national elections, and successful presidential elections.

“We are united. We will do it at the right time, and we will name the running mate. So far as I’m concerned, there is no contest for running mate,” Dan Botwe said.

Ghana’s digitalisation drive will churn out technically-inclined students – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has outlined the advantages Ghana stands to gain from its education digitization efforts, as the government equips students with tablet computers.

Under the ‘One Student, One Tablet’ initiative of the Ghana Smart Schools Project, approximately 1.3 million Senior High School (SHS) students are set to receive tablets, each loaded with digital content to enhance research, teaching, and learning processes, aimed at fostering technical competence among students.

The primary goal is to provide students with cutting-edge learning tools, empowering them to compete globally in the 21st century and Fourth Industrial Revolution.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming the educational sector to meet modern demands, with a significant focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as technical and vocational training.

Highlighting the pivotal role of education in national development, the President underscored the government’s dedication to enhancing the ‘Free SHS’ policy further, with a shift towards digitalization to improve online and offline teaching and learning experiences.

At the tertiary level, plans are underway to offer discounted tablets and laptops to students and lecturers to facilitate academic activities.

President Akufo-Addo justified the substantial investment in education, citing record-high enrollment figures in SHS and significant budgetary allocations aimed at ensuring educational transformation.

As part of the Ghana Smart Schools Project, the government is constructing 100 educational facilities equipped with solar panels and digital infrastructure, with 30 expected to be completed this year, fostering innovative and futuristic education.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, expressed optimism about Ghana’s educational future, emphasizing the transformative power of education in nation-building and commending the President’s commitment to achieving the nation’s educational goals.

The program, attended by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiah, education experts, technocrats, and members of the Diplomatic Corps, signals Ghana’s determination to harness the potential of digitization in education for sustainable development.

“Government continues to seek innovative ways to boost further the ‘Free SHS’ policy.

“As we gather here today, let us reflect on the crucial role education plays in shaping the destiny of our nation. Indeed, education is at the centre of poverty eradication,” he stated.

  • Take NPP, NDC out, we don’t need a repetitive cycle of leadership – Hassan Ayariga to Ghanaians

Take NPP, NDC out, we don’t need a repetitive cycle of leadership – Hassan Ayariga to Ghanaians

The Founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has voiced strong criticism against Ghana’s leadership, advocating for a significant transformation in the country’s political sphere.

In an interview with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show on March 26, Ayariga likened the role of leadership to that of fatherhood.

He differentiated between biological fatherhood, which is unchangeable, and the father of the nation, asserting that while a biological father cannot be replaced, the nation’s father, or its leadership, can be changed.

“What we need are basics, the standards, yet over 67 years after independence, we still cannot provide constant supply of water, constant supply of electricity, good roads. These are the basics, I’m taking about Hospitals, proper schools, infrastructure, we still cannot make these things available to our people after 67 years of independence” he said.

Highlighting the crucial role of change in fostering progress, Ayariga emphasized, “Change is a key to new life. When you make changes, you get new life but if you refuse to change you will be where you are and be stagnant.”

He criticized the practice of recycling political leadership, particularly between the two dominant parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating “This is what over the years we’ve been doing, recycling of those who were supposed to be changed. There is a difference between change ad recycling. What we need is a change not recycling NDC or NPP, we’ve been recycling the two 8 years NDC, 8 years NPP,” he added.

Mr Ayariga emphasized the necessity for change in national leadership, particularly in addressing the persistent failures of past administrations.

Pointing to the inadequacies in providing essential services such as water, electricity, healthcare, education, and infrastructure, even after 67 years of independence, Mr Ayariga underscored the urgent need for improvement in these fundamental areas.

He criticized the lack of progress in fulfilling these basic needs and called for a renewed focus on delivering them to the Ghanaian people.

Mr Ayariga stressed the importance of change in driving progress, noting that refusing to change would lead to stagnation.

He criticized the practice of recycling political leadership between the two dominant parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), advocating instead for genuine change rather than the continuous rotation of the same political entities.

Encouraging Ghanaians to explore new alternatives, Mr Ayariga urged citizens to consider entrusting him with leadership, citing his commitment to his family and entrepreneurial endeavors as evidence of his reliability.

He pledged to prioritize the nation’s well-being and development if given the opportunity to lead, emphasizing the importance of trust and accountability in governance.

I was arrested and deported from U.S. 3 years ago because of bad friends – Ghanaian Musician

Ghanaian Afro-highlife musician, Omayor, has recently opened up about a significant ordeal he faced in the past.

Taking to Instagram, he shed light on a challenging chapter that deeply impacted his life and career.

Recounting events from three years ago, he detailed a troubling encounter that led to his arrest.

According to Omayor, the distressing turn of events originated from a betrayal of trust by a close friend.

He mentioned that he had the chance to travel to the United States (US), but his friend, who had previously gained much from him, placed an illegal substance in his bag, resulting in his deportation.

“I have a story to share with those who like friends. Three years ago I was arrested. I had a visa to travel to America but my close friend who benefited a lot helped put an illegal substance into my bag which eventually led to my arrest. This is why I composed this song, otan,” he added.

Omayor reaffirms his dominance in the Afro-highlife music landscape and beyond, following his successful partnership with Kwame Yogot on the chart-topping track ‘Arroglass.’

His ability to excel across diverse musical genres remains evident.”

Titled ‘Otan,’ meaning ‘Hatred’ in English, the song unfolds a tale inspired by real-life experiences. It showcases Omayor’s signature style, characterized by poignant lyrics exploring themes of love, hate, betrayal, and resilience.”

  • Ghana’s power situation to deteriorate in 2025 – IES

Ghana’s power situation to deteriorate in 2025 – IES

The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has indicated that Ghana’s power situation would worsen by 2025 if not addressed promptly.

Speaking to Citi News he stated that “From 2025, the situation is going to get worse. Because your debt in the sector is increasing every day. Money or cash in the power sector is like the lubrication in your car, Bernard, so it goes up. When you don’t have enough lubrication in your system, what happens is that there is friction, and there will be tears. When that happens, there is going to be a collapse in the sector [which] is almost collapsed.

“It is going to be worse. And why we believe it’s going to be worse is that the managers are not even admitting the problem. The first point to solving your problem is knowing the problem, admitting and finding ways to resolve it,” he stated.

His warning comes amidst ongoing challenges with intermittent power outages, locally known as “dumsor.”

In light of these interruptions, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) instructed ECG to devise a load-shedding schedule.

Nonetheless, ECG asserted that there is no power crisis, citing faulty transformers as the cause of the unstable supply.

However, ECG contends there is no power crisis, attributing the unstable supply to faulty transformers.

In a rebuttal, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh rejected claims of “dumsor,” urging the public to create their own timetable if they perceive a crisis.

John Jinapor argued that the energy sector grapples with generation challenges affecting distribution.

He recommended  that PURC prioritize improving generation instead of enforcing a load-shedding schedule.

Speaking to the media, Mr Jinapor criticized the Minister’s response, accusing him of politicizing sector issues.

Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security, Nana Amoasi VII, echoes Jinapor’s position, asserting that ECG and the Energy Ministry have a duty to furnish a timetable amid outages.

Nana Amoasi VII condemned the Minister’s dismissal of calls for a timetable, suggesting it reflects a lack of awareness and disrespect for consumers’ rights.

“I am very, very surprised even at the PURC directive because the main problem is generation, it has nothing to do with transformers. I thought that the PURC would have done its investigation to indeed determine that there is a generation shortfall.

“If there is a generation shortfall, the outage that occurs at the bulk supply point is controlled by GRIDCo. So GRIDCo will then have to inform ECG which bulk supply point will go off, then ECG will inform its consumers. As we speak there is a deficit in terms of generation and until that is resolved we will continue to have the load shedding we are experiencing.”

“I am very shocked and surprised that the minister would give such contradictory and counter instructions. He should know better that we are shedding load, and even in his interview, he couldn’t refute it. He admitted that yes, they are shedding load, but in his opinion, it is better than during President Mahama’s time. And so what? That is the question. Let’s assume it’s better, so people should not be given a timetable to plan because, in the minister’s opinion, it is better.

“If you admit there is load-shedding, give the people the timetable to plan. And when the people request that the outages are becoming too frequent, give us the timetable to plan, the minister says ‘that those requesting the timetable should go and prepare the timetable themselves. It is extremely unfortunate, very insulting,” he added.

I am excited about how my proposal to dredge sea in Kumasi has been received – Cheddar

The Founder of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, commonly known as Cheddar, expressed his excitement about the responses to his proposal to dredge a sea in Kumasi.

During his regional tour, the ambitious politician, who harbors aspirations of becoming President, unveiled his plan to dredge a sea in Kumasi, emphasizing its importance in facilitating trade within the country.

However, Cheddar’s proposal received mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with some dismissing his ambition and vision.

Despite the skepticism, Nana Kwame Bediako remains resolute in his belief that dredging the sea is a feasible endeavor.

He suggested that connecting various river bodies across the country could make this vision a reality.

During an appearance on TV3’s New Day on Monday, March 25, Cheddar reiterated his commitment to industrialization, emphasizing the importance of logistics in achieving this goal.

He highlighted the presence of underutilized river bodies like Tano, Pra, and Oti, emphasizing the need for dredging to enhance coastal transportation and stimulate industrial growth.

Cheddar emphasized the significance of industrialization in bolstering Ghana’s economy and expressed confidence in his ability to execute the dredging project effectively.

He underscored the importance of engaging professionals with expertise in dredging, mapping, and defense to ensure the success of the initiative.

“I am not surprise, I am happy because I was looking at the African Games to be a big thing but to have one statement kind of competing with the national games, it’s a great trend.

“My vision is to bring industrialisation in this country. One of the main things needed is logistics.

“When I was looking at the map when I was in Techiman, I discovered that they have a river in Tano and it goes all the way to the border. Tano comes all the way to the sea. It has been sitting there for 100 years and no one has connected it.

“River Pra and Oti are very close and they connect. They are all there and connected but no one has dredged them. It will take the river bodies, that is what dredging is about,” he said on TV3’s New Day, Monday, March 25.

He continued, “I am talking about coastal transportation and the future if Ghana is built on industrialization which I am about to start.”

“We are running from industrialization as a country and this is the only thing that will save our economy,” Cheddar added.

He stressed that “I know what to do to do it [dredging the sea in Kumasi] by bringing the right professionals that understands dredging, mapping and defensing.”

It’s insensitive to condone attack on Bongo Ideas – Netizen tells Olele Salvador

A prominent Ghanaian pop culture journalist and TV host at 3Music TV, Olele Salvador, is under scrutiny by a user on the X platform, Abdul Hameed for his remarks regarding an alleged assault on social media personality Albert Nat Hyde, known as Bongo Ideas, by individuals purported to be policemen.

Bongo Ideas recently shared harrowing details of an alleged abduction and torture he endured.

Weeks ago, reports emerged that Bongo Ideas had been arrested by state security agents.

However, both the police and national security agencies later denied any knowledge of his detention.

After days of uncertainty, Bongo Ideas was eventually released, but not without scars.
In an interview with DW Africa, he recounted how individuals disguised as policemen forcibly entered his room around 3 am on March 14, 2024.

The incident occurred following Bongo Ideas’ controversial remarks about the president and his wife, particularly describing her as a trophy wife during the first lady’s birthday celebration.

Allegedly, the supposed policemen warned him against speaking about the president after subjecting him to a severe beating.

In response, Olele Salvador labeled Bongo Ideas as a “cyber bully,” disputing the portrayal of him as a “martyr of free speech.”

Salvador argued that Bongo Ideas’ consistent attacks on individuals disqualify him from such a depiction.

Abdul Hameed, criticized Salvador for justifying the attack on Bongo Ideas, questioning whether torture and beatings are appropriate consequences for online harassment in a democratic society.

CSOs against anti-LGBTQ bill because of donor funds from the West – Netizen

A user on the X platform has accused several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of banding together to oppose the controversial Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values (anti-LGBTQ+) bill recently passed by parliament.

The user contends that these organizations are prioritizing financial gain over their principles by opposing the bill due to their reliance on donor funds from Western countries.

Suddenly almost every CSO have aligned to oppose the anti-LGBTQ bill all because they rely solely on donor funds from the west to chopped. Shame on them.

Parliament passed the anti-LGBTQ bill on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Once enacted into law, it will criminalize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activities, along with their promotion, advocacy, and funding in Ghana.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has clarified that the anti-LGBTQI bill has not yet reached his office.

Despite concerns within diplomatic circles, he assured that the bipartisan approval of the bill by Parliament will not compromise Ghana’s human rights record.

In addressing anxieties regarding any potential shift in Ghana’s stance on human rights and the rule of law, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his commitment to upholding these principles.

While refraining from discussing the bill’s origin, pending on his desk, he acknowledged a constitutional challenge filed at the Supreme Court regarding the proposed legislation.

The President urged patience, suggesting that everyone await the court’s decision before taking any action.

Wicked NPP and NDC politicians want ECG boss out – Netizen

User on the X platform has indicated that the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG) Samuel Dubik Mahama is actively pursuing initiatives aimed at modernizing Ghana’s energy infrastructure and improving the reliability of the power supply.

However, his efforts are being impeded by certain individuals from both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The user suggests that these individuals’ actions aim to thwart and frustrate the managing director of the ECG into resigning from office.

Taking to the X platform he wrote “Truth of the matter is, the current young ECG boss is trying to do something different to save Ghana from the chronic power crisis but Noo, the old folks and wicked NPP and NDC politicians/businessmen want him out. How can we progress?”.

Over the past few weeks, the nation has experienced widespread power outages, commonly known as “dumsor.”

In light of these interruptions, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) instructed ECG to devise a load-shedding schedule. Nonetheless, ECG asserts that there is no power crisis, citing faulty transformers as the cause of the unstable supply.

However, ECG contends there is no power crisis, attributing the unstable supply to faulty transformers.

In a rebuttal, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh rejected claims of “dumsor,” urging the public to create their own timetable if they perceive a crisis.

John Jinapor argues that the energy sector grapples with generation challenges affecting distribution. He recommends that PURC prioritize improving generation instead of enforcing a load-shedding schedule.

Speaking to the media, Jinapor criticized the Minister’s response, accusing him of politicizing sector issues.

Stop lying to us, recent power outages have nothing to do with faulty transformers – John Jinapor to NAPO

Member of Parliament, John Jinapor, is pressing the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for transparency regarding ongoing power outages.

Over the past few weeks, the nation has experienced widespread power outages, commonly known as “dumsor.”

In response to these disruptions, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) directed ECG to establish a load-shedding timetable.

However, ECG maintains there is no power crisis, attributing the unstable supply to faulty transformers.

Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has refuted claims of “dumsor,” challenging the public to devise their own timetable if they believe a crisis exists.

John Jinapor argues that the energy sector faces generation challenges impacting distribution. He suggests PURC focus on improving generation rather than mandating a load-shedding schedule.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on March 25, Jinapor expressed dismay at the Minister’s response, accusing him of politicizing sector challenges.

Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security, Nana Amoasi VII, supports Jinapor’s stance, asserting that ECG and the Energy Ministry are obligated to provide a timetable amid outages.

Nana Amoasi VII criticized the Minister’s dismissal of demands for a timetable, suggesting it demonstrates a lack of awareness and disrespect toward consumers’ rights.

“I am very, very surprised even at the PURC directive because the main problem is generation, it has nothing to do with transformers. I thought that the PURC would have done its investigation to indeed determine that there is a generation shortfall.

We don’t have to wait until election year to advocate for Affirmative Action Bill – Ursula

The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has expressed doubts regarding the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill in the upcoming parliament.

She attributed this uncertainty to the delayed efforts in stakeholder advocacy.

Addressing participants at the Women in Governance National Dialogue themed ‘Movement building towards equal playing field: Women’s inclusion and participation in governance’, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that calls for the passage of the affirmative bill should have been made well before an election year.

She said, “I think this has come a little too late. Every election year when I have the opportunity, I say it. Why do we wait until election years before we start advocating for greater inclusion of women? Why do we do that to ourselves?

“The selection process starts when the last election ends. And we wait for three years and wake up in the election year, sometimes even six months into the election…this even if it is passed to law will not see fruition in the next parliament because the processes for selecting the members of the next parliament have already been crystalized”.

Additionally, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful urged women entrepreneurs to support fellow women seeking political roles. She highlighted that excessive monetization of political activities hampers women’s political involvement, thereby affecting their participation in governance.

“We need your support. T-shirt, you have to buy fuel. After walking with you day and night they will come and sit there and look at your face. You have to feed them. So you have the fires going on in your office or house 24/7. It all cost money.

The event, organized by the EVE International Foundation in collaboration with OXFAM, the Women’s Caucus in Parliament, and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), aimed to promote gender equality and inclusive governance. Notable participants included representatives from UN Women Ghana, the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition Committee, Oxfam Ghana, and female parliamentarians such as Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, Hon. Freda Akosua Prempeh, Hon. Sheila Bartels, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Hon. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, and Sheila Minkah-Premo.

“So women entrepreneurs, and women in businesses, support those who put themselves up for elective positions with your resources. Because you need them to speak for you and advocate for you when they get there” she stated.

Following a clash between locals of Karaga and military personnel, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and injuring three others, the Karaga Security Council in the Northern region has implemented a curfew.

The conflict stemmed from the appointment of a new regent after the demise of a self-proclaimed chief within the community.

On Monday, March 25, supporters gathered at the regent’s residence to demonstrate their allegiance, prompting military intervention to disperse the crowd and maintain order.

However, the situation rapidly deteriorated, with some individuals allegedly hurling projectiles at the military, leading to further escalation and ultimately gunfire, resulting in loss of life.

NAPO is irresponsible and insensitive; he must step down – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded the resignation of Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, following his remarks on the ‘dumsor’ timetable requested by Ghanaians.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who serves as the Energy Minister, disregarded the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) call for a load-shedding timetable, despite the urgent need due to the country’s unstable power supply.

The PURC had directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to furnish a load management schedule by April 2, 2024, given the ongoing electricity supply challenges.

However, Dr. Opoku Prempeh questioned the necessity of such a timetable, challenging those advocating for it to present their proposed schedules instead.

During the inauguration of the NPP campaign team in the Ashanti Region, he urged critics to devise their own timetables if they deemed it necessary.

The NDC condemned the Minister’s remarks, denouncing them as irresponsible.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, expressed the party’s dismay at Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s response to the PURC’s directive in an interview with Citi News.

He suggested that Dr. Prempeh’s comments reflect poorly on the caliber of individuals serving in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government.

“I think I saw Napo’s face, and I saw him grant the interview. You could easily associate that to a man who is frustrated because, obviously, he may not be given the running mate or a man who is drunk. Otherwise, on a clean face of an energy minister who owes responsibility to the people of Ghana to explain to Ghanaians the energy crisis, we don’t make this kind of commentary. They are very unfortunate. They are very irrational. They are very insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians. I was in Oti region over the weekend. It is ‘adomdomadomdom.’ You can’t even power your air condition. Ghanaians are crying and asking that give us a timetable so that we can rationalise our businesses in accordance with the timetable, and you are insulting them.”

“These are the kinds of men that President Akufo-Addo have. This is the kind of liability they have imposed on the finances of this country, who continue to freeze and get paid with taxpayers’ money only to come and spill baggage and irresponsibility back to the people of Ghana… It is clear that we have a useless government in place. We have a bunch of people who do not have the capacity and intellectuality to understand the economy and the problems surrounding it. Let him be responsible. Clearly, the energy minister is not responsible.

Rejecting anti-LGBT+ Bill will tarnish your legacy – Dormaahene to Akufo-Addo

Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, has urged President Akufo-Addo to promptly sign the anti-LGBT+ Bill once the ongoing legal proceedings conclude in the Supreme Court.

Addressing the media on March 25, 2024, Dormaahene Agyemang Badu II expressed concern about potential damage to the president’s legacy if he refrains from endorsing the bill.

He emphasized the significance of President Akufo-Addo leaving behind a positive legacy during his remaining tenure.

“Both the Majority and Minority in Parliament have agreed to pass the Anti-LGBT+ Bill and presented it to the president for his assent but the signing of the bill has become an issue.

“If things aren’t going right, I, Agyeman Badu II, I will say it because you are my family member (Akufo-Addo). If Ghanaians cannot tell you, I will do that.

“You have nine months to end your tenure. I don’t want you to be disgraced. Don’t let them push you into doing things,” he said.

Dormaahene Agyeman Badu II urged President Akufo-Addo not to yield to external pressures or accept any form of inducement that could potentially compromise his stance on the Bill.

He cautioned against associating the president’s name with support for LGBT+ activities, particularly during his retirement.

“Let not it be said that you took money to not sign the bill, don’t let such a bad name be associated with you in your last days.

“I have heard the issue is in court, and I plead with the Supreme Court that some of us are following the law… the moment Supreme Court delivers its judgment, please sign the bill because we won’t allow anybody delaying the bill unless we are gunned down, and I don’t believe we will be gunned down because of the bill,” he added.

The anti-LGBT+ Bill, as passed by Parliament, proscribes LGBT activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Persons caught in these acts would be subjected to six months to a three-year jail term, with promoters and sponsors bearing a three to five-year jail term.

President Akufo-Addo has suspended his decision on whether or not to sign the Bill into law, citing a challenge to its constitutionality in the Supreme Court.

Even if he decides against it, MPs can, by a two-thirds majority, veto the president’s decision and make the provisions of the Bill enforceable.

President Akufo-Addo has relieved Daniel Noble Awumey of his duties as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, according to official correspondence dated Monday, March 25, 2024.

The termination, conveyed in a letter signed by O.B Amoah, the Minister of State at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, cited constitutional and legislative provisions as the basis for this decision.

Specifically referencing Article 243 (3) (b) of the Constitution and Section 20 (3) (b) of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936), the letter outlined the grounds for Awuley’s dismissal.

Additionally, the letter instructed Awumey to transfer his responsibilities to the Regional Minister, who will oversee the Municipal Assembly until a new Municipal Chief Executive is appointed.

Concurrently, President Akufo-Addo has appointed Francis Fiakpui as Awumey’s successor in the vacant position.

“…His Excellency the President of the Republic has revoked your appointment as Municipal Chief Executive for Hohoe Municipal Assembly.

“Consequently, you are to hand over your duties to the Hon. Regional Minister who will exercise oversight responsibility of the Municipal Assembly until the confirmation of a new Municipal Chief Executive,” portions of the letter dated March 25, 2024, read.

2024 election: Bawumia will lose should his running mate come from Ashanti region – NPP member

The leader of Patriot Ghana, a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) organization, has emphatically stated that the party stands to lose the 2024 presidential election if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia selects his running mate from the Ashanti Region.

During an appearance on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s Frontlines on March 25, 2024, Kwesi Korang asserted that the party’s success and its ability to break the 8-year electoral cycle hinge on Bawumia’s decisions. Thus, he urged caution in the selection process for a running mate.

“Our victory as a party depends on Bawumia. He is our candidate, and whatever he does will affect our victory. I want to state categorically, without mincing words, that if he selects a running mate from the Ashanti Region, we will lose the 2024 presidential election.

“Let me also state it this way: if he should select somebody or a politician who is based in the Ashanti Region, he will lose the elections.

“I want listeners to listen to my analysis well. If he chooses someone who is Ashanti but does not reside there and does not do his politics in the region but in other regions, he will win the elections,” he said.

He elaborated further, stating, “If Bawumia selects a politician who resides in the Ashanti Region, regardless of their ethnicity, our chances of winning diminish. However, if the chosen candidate is Ashanti but conducts their political activities in other regions, victory is achievable.”

Korang emphasized that even if the selected individual is not of Ashanti descent but is known as a political figure in the region, the party would still face electoral defeat.

He expressed concern over ongoing power struggles in the Ashanti Region regarding the vice-presidential candidacy, warning that selecting a running mate from the region could lead to apathy among party members and hinder campaign efforts in the 2024 elections.

“Some people would be offended and bitter and refuse to support the party in campaigning in the 2024 elections. And so, we have to tread cautiously,” he added.

It’s either you sign anti-gay bill or have us contend with you – Suma Omanhene to Akufo-Addo

The leader of the Suma Traditional Council in the Bono Region, Odeneho Afram Brempong III, has urged President Akufo-Addo to endorse the Anti-LGBT+ Bill or face community backlash.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the president’s hesitance to enact the bill, Odeneho Afram Brempong III warned of severe repercussions against individuals involved in LGBT+ activities if the legislation remains unratified.

He stressed the readiness of the Suma community to challenge the president if necessary.

Addressing the media on March 25, 2024, Odeneho Afram Brempong III stated, “We have heard that Parliament has passed the LGBT+ Bill and the president is saying he won’t even touch the bill, let alone assent to it.

“If the president doesn’t sign the Anti-LGBT+ Bill, the Suma community has him to contend with. Because in 2021, we called all MPs here to commend them for having such a foresight to make laws against the activities of LGBT+.

“If he signs and he doesn’t agree, he can take it to court and we will also challenge it.

“So, for him refusing to sign, he is worrying us and making us scared because of his past comment that it is bound to happen,” he said.

“In the olden days, we had ways of punishing people engaging in the act of LGBT+. If there are no laws at the moment, we will be using the olden systems, if you are caught, we will lash you first, then we ban you from the community,” he added.

Referring to traditional forms of punishment, the Omanhene underscored the community’s willingness to employ customary measures against those involved in LGBT+ activities if the president fails to endorse the bill.

The Anti-LGBT+ Bill, as passed by Parliament, prohibits LGBT activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and funding. Perpetrators could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years, while promoters and sponsors could be sentenced to three to five years in jail.

President Akufo-Addo has deferred his decision on signing the bill into law, citing a constitutional challenge in the Supreme Court. Nevertheless, if he opts against it, MPs can override his decision with a two-thirds majority vote, making the bill’s provisions enforceable.

Internal conflict at Bekwai SDA forces students to flee from school

Several students from Bekwai SDA Senior High School in the Bekwai Municipality have fled the institution out of fear for their safety.

This exodus comes in the wake of clashes between boarding students and individuals believed to be day students collaborating with troublemakers from the town.

A student, recounting the incident to starrfm.com.gh, detailed a heated altercation between a boarder and a day student on campus last Friday, March 22, 2024, which escalated into physical violence.

Following the departure of the day students, a masked group armed with machetes approached the students amidst a barrage of thrown stones.

Describing the encounter, the student stated, “The students pushed back and retaliated with stones, eventually driving them out of the school.”

The student who witnessed the event mentioned that the police intervened to facilitate the transportation of injured students to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. “One student sustained a machete wound, while others suffered severe injuries,” he noted.

Additionally, he recalled a suspected reprisal attack on Saturday evening after Sabbath service around 8:00 PM, where a group of youths riding rickshaws initiated an assault. This incident provoked the students to arm themselves with machetes in retaliation.

“The boys fought back, overpowering them and damaging one of their vehicles,” he added.

Expressing concern for his safety, the student, who has also fled the school, informed reporter Ivan Heathcote–Fumador that many other students have followed suit in search of safety.

Prosecutor shies away from Opuni-Agongo charge sheet discussion

Principal State Attorney Stella Ohene Appiah has made a firm statement, clarifying that the prosecution’s case does not contend that the purchase of lithovit liquid fertilizer by COCOBOD resulted in a decline in cocoa production between 2014 and 2016.

In a surprising revelation, the prosecutor acknowledged that former COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni and businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo are facing prosecution, among others, not because the lithovit liquid fertilizer purchased and distributed to farmers failed to significantly increase cocoa production.

This disclosure by Stella Ohene Appiah stands in contrast to claims suggesting that the lithovit liquid fertilizer was substandard and that the state did not receive value for money during COCOBOD’s procurement of it, resulting in charges of causing financial loss to the state being leveled against the accused individuals.

Meanwhile, the witness, Dr. Francis Baah, who is also the former Director of the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) of COCOBOD, testified during his evidence-in-chief about the effectiveness of lithovit fertilizer, which he claimed was favored by cocoa farmers.

During cross-examination, counsel for Alhaji Seidu Agongo sought to inquire about the prosecution’s claim regarding the failure of lithovit fertilizer and its alleged impact on cocoa production.

However, Stella Ohene Appiah objected to the question, asserting that the prosecution’s case did not hinge on the decline in production due to the use of lithovit liquid fertilizer.

In response, Benson Nutsukpui, counsel for Alhaji Seidu Agongo, referenced the charge sheet, which purportedly indicated that the supplied lithovit fertilizer did not meet the specified standard and was potentially harmful.

Stella Ohene Appiah conceded that the prosecution’s concern was centered on the lack of a significant increase in cocoa yield rather than the fertilizer’s failure specifically.

The witness, Dr. Francis Baah, emphasized that attributing the rise or fall in cocoa production to a single fertilizer without a specific study or report would be unjustified. He confirmed that COCOBOD evaluates all fertilizers through the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) to assess their impact on yield.

Subsequently, counsel for Alhaji Seidu Agongo requested the court to order the production of cocoa production records from 2012/13 to date to aid in determining whether lithovit liquid fertilizer affected cocoa production, a request supported by Dr. Opuni’s counsel, Samuel Codjoe. The prosecution did not oppose the request, and the court granted it.

Govt to provide smart tablets to 1.3m SHS students

President Akufo-Addo has unveiled a comprehensive initiative to provide Smart Tablets to 1.3 million Senior High School (SHS) students across Ghana.

The announcement came during the launch of the Ghana Smart Schools Project in Accra on Monday.

This project aims to equip students benefiting from the free SHS policy with essential technological skills, aligning with the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance education.

President Akufo-Addo elaborated that approximately 100 smart SHSs are scheduled for construction nationwide within the next two years. These schools aim to not only improve the learning environment but also expand educational opportunities for students nationwide.

“To distribute 1.3 million educational tablets to students in SHSs. That is one student, and one tablet under the Ghana Smart Schools Project. The tablets are fitted with digital content to aid research, teaching and learning.

“At the tertiary level, Ghana is pleased to provide at a discounted price tablets and laptops to students and lecturers to facilitate academic [activities]… The government continues to seek innovative ways to do STEM and the FSHS policy.”

“The next phase of FSHS policy enhancement will be propelled by digitalisation. This will allow a seamless online and offline teaching and learning experience,” he stated.

Under the Ghana Smart Schools Project, each SHS student will receive an educational tablet, totaling 1.3 million tablets distributed across the country. These tablets are equipped with digital content to facilitate research, teaching, and learning.

Moreover, the President highlighted the government’s efforts to provide discounted tablets and laptops to tertiary students and lecturers to support academic activities.

NDC’s Kotonu threatens to expose anti-LGBTQ ‘fighter’

The Deputy National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elikem Eric Kevin Kwame Kotoko, has issued a threat against Richard Dela Sky.

Taking to the X platform, Elikem Eric Kevin Kwame Kotoko openly contested Saviour Kuadenu Yao’s claim of being a true son of Ketu.

“Saviour Kuadenu Yao (SKY) aka @RichardDelaSky, I have a message coming your way tonight. Most likely, you may have to block me again. You can’t hold yourself out as a true son of Ketu. Your family name doesn’t resonate PRIDE. I will be streaming LIVE tomorrow,” he wrote.

Mr. Kotoko’s warning comes in the wake of Journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky filing a lawsuit in Ghana’s highest court against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

The bill, aimed at criminalizing homosexuality and LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, has been approved by Parliament but awaits President Nana Akufo-Addo’s signature, pending a ruling by the Supreme Court on its constitutionality.

Various individuals, including bill proponent Sam George, have criticized Mr. Sky for his actions.

Presently, Elikem Eric Kevin Kwame Kotoko emerges as the latest figure to condemn Richard Dela Sky.

Elikem Kotoko, a vocal supporter of the bill, has taken to social media to castigate Richard Dela Sky, hinting at revelations about Sky’s family background.

“He wasn’t Rich and he was never Ard either, growing up. He lacked that proper upbringing to appreciate what a home was or is and the true definition of family. Don’t be surprised, he has accepted to be used by his paymasters to mount this challenge,” he noted.

Allegations suggest that Sky’s father was involved in criminal activities such as rape and pedophilia, including incestuous acts with his own daughter and another minor.

The Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Professor Dr. Ernest Yorke, has responded to media reports concerning a purported disclosure of musician Kuame Eugene’s medical condition by an individual claiming to be a doctor associated with the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

The original post, attributed to a person identified as Dr. Amina Haarun and dated March 18, 2024, on X platform, stated, “Kuame Eugene is here at the hospital with us and ain’t looking good. Kindly send him a prayer.”

Subsequently, the same individual expressed acceptance of the suspension of her license due to ethical breaches and issued an apology to the public.

In his statement, Prof. Dr. Ernest Yorke clarified that the individual in question is not affiliated with the Ghana Medical Association.

Furthermore, investigations revealed that she is not employed at UGMC and is not registered with the Medical and Dental Council, the regulatory body for medical practitioners in Ghana.

Prof. Yorke underscored the medical profession’s commitment to patient confidentiality as a fundamental ethical principle ingrained in training and practice.

“The Hippocratic oath enjoins all doctors to maintain patient confidentiality even after the death of the patient. He quickly admitted that there however, exceptional circumstances that patient information may be divulged as may be permitted by law,” the GMA vice president said.

He acknowledged that there are exceptional circumstances where patient information may be disclosed, as permitted by law.

Citing the Hippocratic oath, which binds doctors to maintain patient confidentiality even after death, Prof. Yorke emphasized the importance of upholding this principle.

He urged the public to disregard the malicious publications aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the medical profession and called upon law enforcement to investigate the impostor and ascertain the motives behind the publications.

Bawumia who has crippled Ghana’s public debt cannot be made president – NDC

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Salim Adams has cautioned Ghanaians against voting for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

Taking to the X platform he described Dr Bawumia as the “so-called Economic Messiah” who should not be trusted to turn Ghana’s economic woes around.

He added that during the flagbearer of the NDC’s, John Dramani Mahama’s tenure, Ghana’s public debt in 2016 was 120 billion but 610 billion under the NPP government.

According to him Bawumia has nothing to offer when he assumes the presidency of the country as he has already failed in  delegating his roles as the vice-president.

“From Nkrumah to Mahama, our public debt was 120 billion in 2016. Today, it’s a shocking 610 billion under #Bawuliar, the so-called Economic Messiah. How can anyone trust such reckless leadership? Voting for him is a betrayal of our future,” he wrote.

His comment is in line with recent revelations regarding Ghana’s public debt which have stirred significant apprehension and debate across the nation.

According to the March 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana, Ghana’s public debt surged to GH¢610 billion ($52.4 billion) by the end of 2023. This marks an increase of GH¢42.7 billion from September 2023 to December 2023, following a decrease of GH¢14.2 billion recorded between June 2023 and September 2023, bringing the debt to GH¢567.3 billion ($51.0 billion).

The total public debt now represents 72.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), indicating that the country’s debt situation remains challenging despite the completion of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme during the period.

While the domestic debt rose by GH¢19.1 billion, the external debt climbed by GH¢23.6 billion, primarily due to the depreciation of the cedi.

Data from the Central Bank further disclosed that the external component of the total public debt reached $30.1 billion (¢350.3 billion) in December 2023, accounting for 41.6% of GDP. Meanwhile, the domestic debt stood at ¢259.7 billion in December 2023, equivalent to approximately 30.1% of GDP.

However, the report omitted information regarding the financial sector resolution debt and other liabilities such as the energy sector debt.

Akufo-Addo has the right to withhold assent to”unconstitutional” anti-gay bill – Dennis Miracles

The Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has indicated that the government does not oppose the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values (anti-gay) bill, pending the approval of President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on TV3, he emphasized that the bill is a complex issue and requires thorough assessment to avoid potential future repercussions.

“The law has been passed it’s a law purely passed based on consensus, largely by everybody across the political divide. On the floor of the house there was a complete consensus on the passage of the law, there were members of parliaments raised issues of amendments in the law and these amendments were either carried or thrown away, but in principle nobody from the NPP or the NDC side has been against the passage of the anti-LGBTQ law and that is a fact and the law has been approved by parliament,” he stated.

Mr Aboagye explained that one of the procedural steps for signing the bill involves President Akufo-Addo raising concerns, which must be addressed by Parliament before the bill can become law.

He further noted that the process concludes when any amendments and embedded sanctions in the bill are unanimously accepted by both Parliament and the President.

“It has to be transmitted to the president for the president to assent to it or otherwise or raise concerns don’t forget when it is transmitted to the president it is not only assenting to the law but the president can communicate back to parliament on areas of concern.

“It’s not as if the whole process ends at the point where parliament transmits to the president and the only thing left  is for the president to assent. The president under the law is mandated to look at it and then areas of concern he can write to parliament and say that I have received the law but I think that you should look at ABCD and parliament also under the same law can look at the issues raised by the president,” he added.

Parliament passed the anti-LGBTQ bill on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Once enacted into law, it will criminalize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding in Ghana.

However, President Akufo-Addo clarified on Monday, March 4, that the anti-LGBTQI bill has not yet reached his office.

Despite concerns within diplomatic circles, he assured that the bipartisan approval of the bill by Parliament will not compromise Ghana’s human rights record.

Addressing anxieties about any potential shift in Ghana’s stance on human rights and the rule of law, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his commitment to upholding these principles.

While refraining from discussing the bill’s origin, pending on his desk, he acknowledged a constitutional challenge filed at the Supreme Court regarding the proposed legislation.

The President urged patience, suggesting that everyone await the court’s decision before taking any action.

He underscored the importance of Ghanaian state institutions in shaping the future trajectory of rule of law and human rights compliance in the country.

Jane Naana corrected errors in my remark regarding Mahama’s ‘tenure of office’ – Kwesi Ahwoi

Former Minister of Agriculture Kwesi Ahwoi has acknowledged his mistake regarding comments made during an event celebrating the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s vice presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Mr Ahwoi’s remarks, implying that Naana Jane could assume the presidency if John Mahama does not complete his term, sparked significant online criticism.

In a statement released late Sunday (March 24, 2024), Ahwoi clarified that he misspoke and that his comments were misinterpreted.

“Indeed, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in response to my toast, pointed out the erroneous impression created by my statement and was categorical in asserting that she was certain that H.E. John Mahama will win the 2024 general elections and serve his full four-year term,” his statement read in part.

He subsequently apologized to Mahama, Naana Jane, and the NDC, urging party members to strive for victory in the December 2024 elections.

    Kwesi Ahwoi writes:

I have taken notice of the unfortunate controversy that has arisen as a result of a comment I made at a reception organized last Thursday by the Churchstreet group of NDC faithfuls for Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Running Mate to our esteemed flagbearer, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

I sincerely regret the wrong impression that my comment has created. Indeed, it was not my intention, and never will it be my intention to pray that H.E. John Mahama does not serve his full four-year term when he wins the 2024 general elections.

I concede that I misspoke on the occasion. I accept the criticisms in good faith, even though some of the criticisms arise out of a deliberate misrepresentation of my statement.

Indeed, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang in response to my toast, pointed out the erroneous impression created by my statement and was categorical in asserting that she was certain that H.E. John Mahama will win the 2024 general elections and serve his full four-year term.

It is unfortunate that my statement appears to have taken the shine off what was otherwise a cheerful and light-hearted occasion.

I hereby render an unreserved and unqualified apology to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the leadership and rank and file of the great NDC.

Comrades and friends, let us put this unfortunate incident behind us and unite behind our flag-bearer, the visionary Nation Builder, to rescue our beloved country in the December 2024 elections.

    SIGNED.

Senegal: Barbarous Diomaye likely to be crowned winner in presidential polls – Report

Preliminary results from Senegal’s presidential election show opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye leading the race, prompting his supporters to take to the streets in celebration.

However, the main rival from the ruling coalition insists that a run-off will be necessary to determine the ultimate winner.

Following Sunday’s election, initial reports indicate Faye’s growing support, with at least five of the 19 candidates extending their congratulations as results slowly emerge.

Former prime minister Amadou Ba, representing the ruling coalition, cautioned against premature celebrations, expressing confidence in the possibility of a run-off based on the feedback from their team of experts.

The election marked a pivotal moment for Senegal, with millions turning out to peacefully cast their votes amid a backdrop of political turmoil over the past three years. The outcome could signal a shift from the administration led by outgoing President Macky Sall, which, while promoting investor-friendly policies, has struggled to alleviate economic challenges in the region.

With Sall not on the ballot for the first time in Senegal’s history, his ruling coalition selected Ba as their candidate, aiming to maintain their hold on power.

Initial tallies suggested a significant lead for Faye, sparking joyous scenes across the capital, Dakar, as supporters celebrated in anticipation of victory.

Despite the early celebrations, final provisional results are expected by Tuesday, with a second round of voting possible if no candidate secures the required majority.

Faye’s alliance with firebrand opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was disqualified from running due to a defamation conviction, has drawn attention. Sonko’s endorsement of Faye underscores their shared vision for Senegal’s future.

As Senegal awaits the final outcome, Faye remains committed to his platform, promising to address corruption, restore stability, and prioritize economic independence, particularly for the country’s youthful population.

Danger looms over Barekese Dam as encroachers destroy 80% of forest cover

Officials from the Ghana Water Company have observed that eighty percent of the forest cover protecting the Barekese Dam has been destroyed, leaving the reservoir vulnerable to evaporation.

Encroachment onto the dam’s buffer zone is escalating beyond control, resulting in disruptions to water distribution for eighty percent of Kumasi residents who rely on piped water from the dam.

Ashanti Regional Chief Manager overseeing production, Dr. Hanson Mensah-Akutteh, highlighted the drastic reduction in the dam’s water volume due to farming activities and encroachment. This situation is already causing frequent water shortages in areas like Asokwa and Kwadaso.

“The forest cover that is supposed to protect the catchment area has been reduced by 80 percent. In other words, almost all the trees are gone, and the cover has turned into a bare land where farming activities are ongoing”, Ashanti Regional Chief Manager in-charge of Production, Dr Hanson Mensah-Akutteh said.

The dam’s siltation has also halved its original water capacity, posing a severe threat to water availability in Kumasi.

Urgent action is needed to remove encroachers and protect the buffer zones.

Efforts to reforest the buffer zones are being hampered by farmers clearing land for agriculture.

The Ghana Water Company Limited is seeking support from local chiefs and the District Assembly to enforce laws against encroachment.

Nana Kusi Obuodom of Barekese emphasized the importance of enforcing laws to prevent encroachment on buffer zones.

Experts stress the necessity of maintaining forested riverbanks to prevent siltation and shrinkage. However, with ongoing encroachment on the Barekese dam buffer zone, the risk of water scarcity for Kumasi residents looms large.

Among the technology solutions developed are noise-free trolleys, the installation of the Central Region’s first electronic charging hub, the creation of bamboo-based sanitary pads, and the design of iron phosphate batteries for solar tricycles.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kweku Adutwum Ayim Boakye, revealed that as part of the contract, the university will manufacture enhanced iron batteries for their Eco-Rides.

These batteries will significantly increase the tricycles’ travel range from 5 to 130 kilometers.

This advancement will facilitate the launch of the Eco-Ride project, offering cost-effective transportation solutions to students and residents in Cape Coast and its vicinity.

Prof. Boakye made this announcement during the university’s 20th congregation ceremony, where 1,030 students graduated across various programs.

However, Prof. Boakye also addressed the university’s pressing challenges, including insufficient student accommodation and unfinished GETFUND projects.

He appealed to the government and other stakeholders for assistance, emphasizing the council’s authorization for management to employ all lawful means to tackle the issues.

Management is committed to doubling the available bed space by 2025 to address the accommodation shortage.

The Presidential Candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has pledged to provide every Ghanaian child with a monthly allowance if elected as President.

Mr Akpaloo envisions significant economic transformation for Ghana should he assume office.

Speaking to Kwadwo Oppong Kyeremeh, Akpaloo emphasized his commitment to distributing monthly allowances to every Ghanaian child, drawing inspiration from similar initiatives benefiting his own children abroad. He believes this measure will stabilize the economy, fostering prosperity by enabling citizens to actively participate in economic activities.

Akpaloo asserts that this initiative isn’t limited to children but extends to unemployed individuals, providing them with financial support until they secure employment. He reiterated his longstanding promise to implement these measures during an interview on the Angel Morning Show (AMS), emphasizing their alignment with the LPG’s manifesto, “A Better Tomorrow, A New Plan for Jobs and Wealth Creation.”

Akpaloo’s vision reflects a holistic approach to social welfare, aiming to improve the lives of Ghanaians across various demographics. If elected, he intends to prioritize these initiatives to pave the way for a brighter future for all citizens.

“In the first place, if elected as President as revealed to me by God, I will pay every Ghanaian child monthly allowance as my six children are benefiting elsewhere in the diaspora.

“Every child will be paid monthly, and this will make the economy stable so that businesses can flourish because once there is money for every citizen they can as equally patronize goods and items from traders,” he told Kwadwo Oppong Kyeremeh.

“Again, as done in abroad, I will pay every Ghanaian who is unemployed and is 18 years and above including the aged who cannot work in their capacity will be paid monthly,” he added.
