Ghana’s failure to refine its minerals is deliberate – Bright Simons

The vice president of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons has stated that Ghana’s failure to refine its minerals, including gold, bauxite, manganese, and lithium, is not accidental but deliberate.

In a post on X platform, Mr Simons emphasized that influential figures within government are hindering efforts to add value to these minerals, undermining the country’s potential for economic growth.

“Newsfile watchers will remember my “fight” with a Ghanaian govt mining official over Zimbabwe’s edict to force value addition to lithium & ban ore & concentrate exports. He claimed it wasn’t true even when we showed documents. Well, it has started! The factories are ready.

“In Ghana? A few days ago, the company with the only lithium mining lease brought wholesalers to inspect the site. They are selling forward 100% of all the lithium that will be produced. So no material to turn into battery-grade carbonate. In short: no real value addition.

“For those who think the failure to add value to other minerals Ghana has produced for a 100 years (like gold, bauxite & manganese) is merely accidental; no, it is not. Govt insiders won’t let it happen. End of story.” he added.

Mr Simons’s remarks come amidst renewed attention on Ghana’s mineral sector, particularly in light of recent developments regarding lithium mining.

For over a century, Ghana has been a significant producer of various minerals, yet the country has struggled to capitalize on its resources by refining them into higher-value products.

Ghana has granted a 15-year lithium mining license to Atlantic Lithium Limited, positioning the country to tap into the lucrative global lithium industry.

Barari DV Ghana Limited, a unit of Atlantic Lithium, holds the lease to construct a lithium mine in Ewoyaa, Central Region, pending environmental permits from the EPA and the Minerals Commission.

“Women empowerment but yet they portray utter ignorance when given power” – Scott Bolshevik

Renowned financial analyst, economist, and historian Scott Bolshevik has stated that while women advocate for empowerment, they display ignorance when entrusted with positions of authority.

The call for women’s empowerment echoes globally, with individuals and organizations championing equal opportunities for women in various spheres of life.

However, taking to the X platform the he stated that the reality of women in power paints a different picture, raising questions about their readiness and competence to lead effectively.

His comment is in response to a recent statement by a passionate advocate for women and children’s rights, Ellen Ama Daaku.

Speaking on TV3 she described the hierarchical structure within Ghanaian politics, particularly focusing on the roles and responsibilities of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo.

According to her while Bawumia holds the position of vice president, it is Akufo-Addo who has been elected by the Ghanaian populace to make crucial decisions for the nation and not the former.

She added that Ghanaians have entrusted Akufo-Addo with the authority to lead and make executive decisions, emphasizing that Bawumia’s role is supportive rather than authoritative.

“Alhaji Bawumia is vice president he is not the president Akufo-Addo. Ghanaians voted for Akufo-Addo to take certain decisions, we did not vote for Alhaji Bawumia, we are yet to  vote for him.

“Until we vote for Bawumia to be president when there’s a sitting president by God’s grace is not dead and is taking his decisions you do not come and ask where Bawumia is, when his boss is there and he is working. Fortunately Alhaji Bawumia is a type of person who doesn’t undermine his leaders. That is why he is vice president and he is behaving as one,” she added.

However according to Scott Bolshevik contemporary politics is now characterized by a significant dominance of partisanship, which tends to overshadow core principles and values.

“Women empowerment but yet they portray utter ignorance when given power. Partisanship in politics has shifted the focus to affiliations rather than principles, dividing issues into left or right rather than determining what is right or wrong,” he added.

Teachers were seen gathered around a table, while some students engaged in conversations during what should have been learning hours.

“During my time in high school, I was introduced to lesbianism. It happened during inter school games while I was supporting our team. A fellow student approached me, informing me that she had soiled her uniform. In an act of kindness, I escorted her to my dormitory so she could clean up. I provided her with a pad and a new panty, and from that moment, we formed a close friendship,” she stated.

She accepted the invitation and visited her home; where she spent about a week.

WASSCE 2024 to begin August 5

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially rescheduled the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), shifting the examination period from August 5 to September 27.

This alteration deviates from the previously announced timeframe of July 1 to August 31, 2024.

Concurrently, the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) remains scheduled for July 8 to July 12.

In a circular dated March 12, 2024, addressed to regional directors, the acting Director of the Schools and Instructions Division of GES, Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, communicated the revised WASSCE date.

The communication emphasized the need for all senior high school (SHS) heads to acknowledge and prepare candidates accordingly for the updated examination period.

This new schedule supersedes the earlier one and aims to provide candidates with ample time for preparation.

While no official reason was provided for the date change, sources suggest it is to ensure candidates are adequately prepared for the examination.

Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, confirmed that Ghana would proceed with the Ghana Only Version of the WASSCE-SC due to the shift in dates.

This marks the third time Ghanaian candidates will sit for the WASSCE-SC exclusively, as other WAEC member countries—Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia—have reverted to their traditional May/June examination calendar post-COVID-19.

Mr Kapi clarified misconceptions surrounding the Ghana Only Version, emphasizing that it adheres to the same rigorous standards as the examination administered in other WAEC member countries.

The examination process, content compilation, and grading standards remain unchanged, ensuring parity with international standards.

Despite the adjustment in the examination schedule, Mr Kapi affirmed that WAEC remains committed to releasing results promptly to facilitate students’ transition to tertiary institutions.

“It is just that we have decided to push ours further so that our students are able to make time for it to be able to write and write it well,” he explained.

“We usually have a timetable after examinations.

    So, obviously yes.

Yes, I believe so,” he added.

Additionally, he noted that registration for the WASSCE-SC commenced on March 11 and will conclude on April 19, 2024.

Don’t think you can order parliament around – Ablakwa to Bediatuo

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has criticized Nana Bediatuo Asante, Executive Secretary to President Akufo-Addo.

Bediatuo has been in the spotlight due to a letter he penned, urging the Clerk of Parliament to halt the transmission of the anti-LGBT+ Bill to the presidency for assent, citing legal challenges against the Bill.

The tone and contents of the letter have been seen as disrespectful to the House, particularly by opposition lawmakers and Speaker Alban Bagbin.

In a social media post dated March 20, 2024, Ablakwa shared his thoughts on the letter, emphasizing that the presidency should not assume it can control Parliament.

“I hope President Akufo-Addo’s Secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo, isn’t assuming he can control the Ghanaian Parliament like he controls Madam Butterfly Restaurant Limited, which he incorporated after becoming Secretary to the President of Ghana.

“Parliament’s constitutional independence must be respected. We shall not be subjected to the control of familial appointees at the presidency!” Ablakwa’s post, which was accompanied by company documents with Bediatuo’s registration details, read in part.

“I shall reserve the activities of Madam Butterfly for another day. By the way, how different is Bediatuo’s butterfly from Alan’s butterfly? Interesting days ahead,” the post concluded.

In Speaker Bagbin’s formal response to Akufo-Addo’s rejection of the anti-LGBT+ Bill, as stated in Bediatuo’s letter, he accused the presidency of acting against the Constitution.

Bagbin also mentioned Parliament’s inability to approve some of the president’s ministerial nominees at the end of his statement, read in Parliament, citing an injunction filed against him and Parliament by an opposition MP.

Wassa East: Queenmother arrested over galamsey activities

The District Chief Executive of Wassa East District in the Western Region, Emmanuel Kwakye, has orchestrated the apprehension of Nana Akwah Akua, the queen mother of Accra New Town, due to rampant illegal mining (galamsey) activities in the area.

The queen mother’s arrest was prompted by reports of ongoing galamsey operations occurring near the Accra New Town Basic School, posing threats to the safety of students and disrupting the peaceful learning atmosphere.

Upon receiving these reports, the DCE, Emmanuel Kwakye, visited the town and confronted the queen mother regarding the illicit activities.

However, she allegedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations for her inability to halt the illegal mining operations.

Consequently, the DCE decided to have her arrested to assist in police investigations.

Previous footage depicted active galamsey operations within the school premises, with the noise generated by the machinery causing disturbances to the students’ learning process.

Nevertheless, as reported by UTV, when the DCE and the police arrived at the scene, the illegal miners had already vacated the site and eluded capture by seeking refuge in hiding places.

“DISEC warns against the modification of these celebrations and gatherings into a festival/durbar,” it added.

Moreover, the Assembly reiterated to the Ave Dakpa Community the imminent interim injunction against the Ameshikpe festival and strongly urged compliance with the court’s ruling.

“We kindly request the cooperation and understanding of all community members during this period. The peace of Ave Dakpa and the entire district is of utmost importance, and we need all of you on board to develop in a peaceful environment.”

“Please ensure to comply with these directives,” it added.

  • Bagbin’s response to Presidency’s anti-gay letter impressive – Osman Ayariga

Bagbin’s response to Presidency’s anti-gay letter impressive – Osman Ayariga

Deputy Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga ESQ, has commended the recent address delivered by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, describing it as a “masterpiece” in terms of its academic and legal acumen.

In an interview with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show on March 21, Ayariga lauded Bagbin’s ability to analyze various issues, cite case laws, and apply administrative law effectively in his speech.

He highlighted Bagbin’s comprehensive coverage of constitutional mandates and the roles of individuals involved in the parliamentary process.

Expanding on Bagbin’s critique of the President’s actions, Ayariga suggested that the Speaker’s remarks implied a characterization of the President as a “walking illegality,” citing alleged instances of illegal conduct and attempts to undermine parliamentary authority.

“Speaker Bagbin’s speech is a masterpiece so far as academic exercise and legal jurisprudent is concern. You read through and you will understand how he’s able to analyze the various issues and also quote case laws to buttress his points and instances where he needs to apply some administrative law, he then applies it. He also talks about the constitution itself and talks about the mandates of every person that was involved in this entire tango.

“Inferring from what the Speaker actually wrote, there is nothing short of just calling the President a walking illegality that is clearly what the Speaker was trying to tell us. The President consistently has engaged in so many illegal acts and aside from that indirectly tries to denigrate the powers of Parliament.”

“I can clearly infer that the president is a walking illegality, and he doesn’t have respect for the constitution nor the organs of government, especially Parliament. And Parliament, coming from such a very honorable house, I thought that he would have held Parliament in high esteem, but I do not see that happening,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with what he perceived as the President’s disregard for constitutional principles and parliamentary autonomy, Ayariga lamented the lack of respect shown towards Parliament, given its esteemed position in governance.

Turning to the ongoing debate surrounding the LGBTQ+ bill, Mr Ayariga praised the courage and principles demonstrated by Members of Parliament (MPs).

He noted that while MPs may not necessarily oppose the bill entirely, they express reservations about specific provisions and associated penalties.

Moreover, Mr Ayariga echoed the sentiments of the Ghanaian Parliament, conveying a sense of dissatisfaction with the President’s response to the bill.

He emphasized the significant efforts undertaken by MPs to advance the bill through the legislative process, underscoring the perceived lack of appreciation for their efforts by the executive branch.

“I believe that Members of Parliament are men of courage, they are men of principles,” Ayariga stated. “Most of them are not against the bill entirely but against certain portions and punishments.”

“The parliament of Ghana feels very spited, and I also agree with them,” affirmed Ayariga. “Considering the fact that Members of Parliament need to go through a laborious process to get the bill passed”.

Anti-gay bill: Akufo-Addo is exhibiting signs of Napoleonic syndrome – Prof. Ayensu-Danquah

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Essikado-Ketan constituency in the Western Region, Professor Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s delay in accepting and assenting to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024 (anti-gay bill).

The bill was unanimously passed by Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, but President Akufo-Addo has not yet assented to it for it to become law.

Speaking on TV3 New Day on Thursday, March 21, Prof. Ayensu-Danquah accused the President of being contentious and overly assertive. She likened his behavior to what she termed as the Napoleonic syndrome, suggesting that he consistently seeks to assert dominance and be the center of attention.

She emphasized that the President, like any other individual, is not above the legislature and should accept and assent to the anti-gay bill as required.

In a letter dated March 18, President Akufo-Addo requested Parliament to halt the transmission of the bill to the presidency for assent, citing pending applications for an interlocutory injunction filed at the Supreme Court.

In response, Speaker Alban Bagbin expressed strong dissatisfaction with the President’s refusal to assent to the bill, stating that it was contemptuous.

Bagbin announced the suspension of vetting and approval of the President’s ministerial nominees pending a Supreme Court ruling against the vetting exercise, following an interlocutory injunction filed at the Supreme Court by an MP.

Savannah: Houses in Bole destroyed by fire over land dispute

Reports indicate that houses owned by members of the Jahori tribe in the Bole township have been set ablaze amid a land dispute with Bole Wura.

According to the information received, two brothers of Bole Wura, Alex, and another chief, have been detained in connection with the incident, leading to the arson of Jahori-owned properties.

Tensions have been brewing for some time due to a longstanding land dispute between the Bole community and the Jahori tribe, resulting in both parties issuing threats against each other.

The conflict escalated when a case was filed in 2023 at the Tamale High Court by Bole Wura Safo Kutugefeso against the Jahoris.

After months of legal proceedings, the court ruled on February 6, stating that Bole Wura holds no authority over Jahori lands.

Presiding Justice Richard Mac Kogyapwah specified in the ruling that Bole Wura Kutugefeso is restrained from interfering with the peaceful occupation of Jahori lands.

Furthermore, the court imposed an injunction on the land until a final resolution is reached regarding its rightful ownership.

During a court appearance on March 21, 2024, Alex, the brother of Bole Wura, and a sub-chief of the Bole Traditional Area were ordered to be arrested, further exacerbating tensions. This led to outraged youth in Bole setting fire to houses owned by the Jahori clan, resulting in substantial property damage.

Stephen Obeng Darko, legal counsel for the Jahori Clan, expressed that the court ruling prohibits Bole Wura from any interference with Jahori lands or people. He reiterated that compliance with the court’s order, issued on October 27, 2021, is essential until a final resolution is reached.

  • You are nowhere close to Akufo-Addo in terms of power – Ellen Ama Daaku to Bagbin

You are nowhere close to Akufo-Addo in terms of power – Ellen Ama Daaku to Bagbin

The former women’s organiser aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku has rejected the idea of equality between the President and the Speaker of Parliament with regards to their power and authority.

During her appearance on TV3, Ellen Ama Daaku highlighted the constitutional distinction between the roles of the President and the Speaker of Parliament.

She underscored that according to the constitution, the President holds the position of the first gentleman of the land, emphasizing that the President, Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, and Chief Justice collectively hold precedence over all other individuals in Ghana.

“The constitution says the president is the first gentleman of the land. The President and the Speaker of Parliament are not the same. The President comes first, followed by the Vice President, and then the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice, these four shall take precedence over all other persons in Ghana so they are not the same.

Madam Daaku expressed concern over attempts by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Prof. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, to equate the authority of the President and the Speaker of Parliament, emphasizing that they are not equivalent positions under the constitutional framework.

“You see what this thing that the NDC is trying to say not just from Prof. Grace Ayensu-Danquah from all of them that the president and the Speaker of parliament are the same, they are not the same,” she added.

Speaker Bagbin had previously claimed to hold the second most powerful position in the country, surpassing the Vice President.

He recounted an interaction with Supreme Court judges who affirmed his ranking above the Vice President, indicating that he occupies a higher position in the country’s hierarchy than previously assumed.

Bagbin’s remarks, delivered amidst laughter from Members of Parliament, emphasized the equality of the three arms of government – executive, legislative, and judicial.

He underscored the need for parity in resource allocation, highlighting the historical neglect of Parliament and the judiciary in budget allocations since 1993.

Addressing the gathered MPs, Bagbin stressed the significance of elevating parliamentary and judicial funding to at least 5% of total revenue within four years.

He revealed his discussions with both Majority and Minority leaders regarding this matter and expressed shock at the minimal allocation these branches have historically received.

“When you start from His Excellency the President, you have to go to the Vice before you come to the Speaker and then you go to the Chief Justice. But there are three arms of government,” he said, attracting spontaneous laughter from the MPs.

“My colleagues in the Supreme Court actually told me that you are not Number 3, you are Number 2. All those who were present at that meeting were convinced when the Supreme Court judge made the submission and justified it.”

Mr. Bagbin said “it is not me saying it. I have said I am Number 3 and they said I am not, I am Number 2,” he added.

  • No financials for GACL has been published since Akufo-Addo assumed office – Man alleges

No financials for GACL has been published since Akufo-Addo assumed office – Man alleges

A Ghanaian man has alleged that for the past 7 years there have been no financial reports published by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

According to him, the lack of accountability began when the Akufo-Addo-led government assumed office.

Taking to the X platform he indicated that during former president, John Dramni Mahama’s the GACL’s revenue from 2015 – 2016 doubled from 2.1 to 5.8 billion Ghana Cedis.

He added that the individuals under the former president were up to the task, unlike those from Akufo-Addo.

In 2013, former President John Dramani Mahama appointed Charles Asare as the managing director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

Upon assuming his role, Asare diligently worked on reconstructing and fortifying the company.

By 2015, he successfully issued the inaugural financial statements for Ghana Airports, followed by the second full financial year in 2016.

“ In 2013, former president, John Dramni Mahama, appointed Charles Asare as the managing director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). Immediately he went to work, busy reconstructing and rebuilding the company.

” In 2015, he published the first ever financial statements for Ghana Airports and in 2016 he published the second full financial year. From 2015 to 2016 the revenue and assets of the company doubled from 2.1 to 5.8 billion Ghana Cedis. So you can say Mr Asare did a very good job at managing the company,” he added.

However, in 2016, it is alleged that a clan member of Mahama, John Attafuah, was appointed as the new managing director in 2017.

Mr  Attafuah’s tenure was marked by significant dissatisfaction among the staff, who accused him of nepotism and behaving as if Ghana Airports was his familial property.

Despite efforts to retain him, Attafuah’s leadership faced considerable internal resistance, ultimately leading to his dismissal by President Akufo-Addo in 2019.

Notably, during Mr Attafuah’s two-year tenure from 2017 to 2019, unlike his predecessor Asare, no financial reports for GACL were made public.

“But then in 2016, something happened Akufo-Addo came to power and appointed his clan member John Attafuah as the new MD in 2017. This MD was so terrible that all the staff hated him and they said he was behaving as though Ghana Airports belonged to his family members.

“Things were not well for him at the company because no one wanted to work with him and despite all his attempts to keep him, Nana Addo had no choice but to eventually fire him in 2019 but it’s important to mention that the two years that he was in office from 2017 to 2019. Unlike Asare, John never published the financials of GACL. In the 7 years that NPP has been in power from 2016 to date, no financials have been published for GACL. And so all the MDs that Nana has appointed I don’t know if the appointments come with special instructions,” he stated.

Established in 2006, the Ghana Airports Company Ltd. (GACL) holds the mandate for the planning, development, management, and maintenance of all airports and aerodromes across Ghana.

It key responsibilities are planning, developing, managing, and maintaining all public airports and airstrips nationwide.

    • It also facilitates the movement of aircraft, passengers, cargo, and mail.

    • GACL ensures the safety and security of aircraft, passengers, and cargo in alignment with global best practices.

Probe collaborators of Polish man arrested for fraud in attempt to build 19m homes in Ghana – Bright Simons to security agencies

Vice-President in charge of Research at IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Bright Simons, has urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate collaborators linked to a Polish individual, Paweł Włodarczyk.

Taking to the X platform, Bright Simons stated that Paweł Włodarczyk has been indicted by the Polish Anti-Corruption Agency for alleged fraud.

Mr Simons added that Paweł Włodarczyk has been “convinced Polish investors to give him millions of dollars to invest in Ghana & Nigeria”.

This he said raises concerns over the potential involvement of accomplices in perpetrating the suspected fraudulent scheme.

Bright Simons emphasized the need for authorities to probe deeply into the network of individuals and entities associated with the arrested Polish national.

“Paweł Włodarczyk, the Polish Big Boss who convinced Polish investors to give him millions of dollars to invest in Ghana & Nigeria is finally indicted by the Polish Anti-Corruption Agency. His favourite pitch: “there are 19 million houses awaiting building in Ghana & Nigeria,” he added.

He indicated that Paweł Włodarczyk, was apprehended amidst allegations of fraudulent activities related to the housing project across Ghana and Nigeria.

Mr Simons stressed the significance of scrutinizing collaborators involved in such ambitious ventures, highlighting the potential ramifications of unchecked fraudulent schemes on both countries’ economy.

  • Your choice of words to Akufo-Addo over anti-gay bill were inappropriate – Afenyo-Markin to Bagbin

Your choice of words to Akufo-Addo over anti-gay bill were inappropriate – Afenyo-Markin to Bagbin

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed dissatisfaction with the Speaker of Parliament’s language in a formal statement regarding President Akufo-Addo’s stance on assenting to the anti-LGBT+ Bill.

In a critical address, Speaker Bagbin accused Akufo-Addo, among other things, of establishing a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy by rejecting the transmission of the Bill for assent.

Following his 62-point statement, Bagbin adjourned the House sine die without permitting leaders to respond to his views.

For Afenyo-Markin, who assumed the role of Majority Leader weeks ago, the Speaker, through his statement, not only disparaged the president but also refused to allow leadership to weigh in on a vital issue.

Speaking to the press after the adjournment, Afenyo-Markin stated “Mr Speaker went beyond expressing disagreement and rather pronounced judgment on what, in his view, was wrong.

“Mr Speaker did not only stop there; he also used very unsavoury words to describe Mr President. We believe that in a democracy, we have our right to disagree on views expressed, but we do not have the right to say things to denigrate another. This, we think, is very unacceptable.

“Mr Speaker said the President has undermined democracy and that he should have resorted to the Constitution in making certain communications to the House. We in the majority beg to disagree on the position taken by Mr Speaker,” he stressed.

Regarding the letter from the presidency urging Parliament not to transmit the Bill until two legal cases are resolved, the Majority Leader explained:

Afenyo-Markin also lamented what seemed like an unexpected move by Bagbin to adjourn indefinitely without discussing it during meetings to address the day’s agenda.

“This morning, the leadership of the House sat together to discuss the various items to be taken. We have finished some, but there were some that we were supposed to take, and we were told that Mr Speaker would have to take the chair.

“It is very disappointing that after Mr Sopeaker had made known his own views about the letter sent from the presidency to the clerk, he adjourned the House without giving room for the leadership of the House to even comment.

“This we find very strange. This is a democracy; we believe, as Mr Speaker himself said, that this ‘impasse calls for reflection’. I will play that out to Mr Speaker that we all need to reflect on the way forward as a nation,” he added.

  • Kill suspended Agyapa deal immediately – CSO Coalition to Akufo-Addo

Kill suspended Agyapa deal immediately – CSO Coalition to Akufo-Addo

A group of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has urged President Akufo-Addo to promptly cease all components of the failed Agyapa Mineral Royalties transaction agreement.

In a united statement, the CSO Coalition disclosed their awareness of ongoing Agyapa-associated processes, including negotiations for a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with Jersey, where Agyapa Royalties Limited was intended to be domiciled.

“We are aware of other Agyapa-linked processes that are ongoing, including negotiating a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with Jersey, where the Agyapa Royalties Limited was intending to be hosted”.

“The Coalition hereby reiterate our opposition to the deal and demand that the President should completely terminate the Agyapa,” the statement added.

“It is instructive to note that between 2020 and 2022, cumulative Mineral Royalty receipts by the state was in excess of USD 720 Million, half of which would have been forfeited for the upfront USD 500 million sought through the ill-reputed Agyapa deal. Again, this gives credence to the value for money concerns raised by the Coalition.”

Furthermore, the Coalition highlighted Ghana’s potential loss of approximately US$500 million in mineral royalties between 2020 and 2022 under the Agyapa arrangement.

Nevertheless, the Coalition expressed astonishment at the disclosure that a total of US$12 million had been expended on the defunct deal.

“The Coalition was particularly alarmed by this revelation because at the time of suspension of the deal in 2020 by H.E the President, there was no disclosure on expenses related to the deal.”

President Akufo-Addo had suspended the Agyapa Mineral Royalties transaction agreement in 2020.

During his delivery of the 2021 State of the Nation Address in Parliament, the President indicated the government’s intention to re-engage Parliament to chart a new course for the Agyapa Mineral Royalties transaction.

Meanwhile, the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) in February,2024 revealed that 12 million dollars spent on the deal.

During an interaction with Parliamentary Appointments Committee (PAC), CEO of MIIF, Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, revealed that the government had utilized $12 million on the halted Agyapa royalties agreement.

Mr Koranteng informed the PAC on Tuesday, February 13, 2023, that the $12 million expenditure was allocated to processes associated with initiating the initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange before the Agyapa deal was halted.

Addressing queries regarding due diligence, Koranteng clarified that the Ministry of Finance had engaged the services of international consultancy firms and financial institutions with expertise in such matters.

He reiterated that the Ministry of Finance had acted upon the advice provided, deeming it to be prudent.

Furthermore, he elaborated that the establishment of a gold royalties company, aimed at leveraging royalties streaming for the benefit of Ghana, was the intended outcome based on the counsel received.

“My understanding, honourable chair, is that the Ministry of Finance procured the services of international consultancy and companies and financial institutions that have done this in the past and that the advice provided was what the Ministry of Finance stood on.

“We started with the Ministry of Finance, and from the documents that we have, it is clear that the correct advice was provided on the set-up of a gold royalties company where the streaming of the royalties would benefit Ghana,” he stated.

Read the statement from the CSO Coalition below:

We, the undersigned members of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Working on Extractives, Anti-Corruption and Good Governance have noted with great concern recent revelation at the Public Accounts Committee hearing on February 13, 2024, that a staggering US$ 12 million (which is in excess of GHS 150 million under the prevailing exchange rate) has been spent on administrative and advisory services in relation to Agyapa. The Coalition was particularly alarmed by this revelation because at the time of suspension of the deal in 2020 by H.E the President, there was no disclosure on expenses related to the deal. The recent Auditor General’s reports (2020, 2021 and 2022) on Public Boards, Corporations and other Statutory Institutions were silent on any expenditure related to the scandalous Agyapa deal. This lack of accountability affirms concerns raised by the Coalition in previous statements about the lack of transparency around the Agyapa transaction. It is instructive to note that between 2020 and 2022, cumulative Mineral Royalty receipts by the state was in excess of USD 720 Million, half of which would have been forfeited for the upfront USD 500 million sought through the ill-reputed Agyapa deal. Again, this gives credence to the value for money concerns raised by the Coalition.Given the insistence by the good people of Ghana that Agyapa is a bad business case and a drain on the public purse, the President on 9th March 2021 indicated in his address on the State of the Nation that “…government will come back and engage the house on the steps it intends to take on the future of the Agyapa transaction.”This stance was further reiterated by the then Minister of Finance (MoF) at his vetting on 26th March 2021 that the deal would be resubmitted to parliament for consideration. In spite of this commitment, there have not been any public engagements. However, the Coalition is aware of other Agyapa-linked processes that are ongoing, including negotiating a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with Jersey, where the Agyapa Royalties Limited was intending to be hosted. The Coalition hereby reiterate our opposition to the deal and demand that the President should completely terminate the AgyapaSignatory Organisations:1. FULL TEXT: Majority Caucus blasts Bagbin for suspending approval of Akufo-Addo’s appointees

The Majority Caucus in Parliament issued a strong response to the events in the House on March 20, 2024, where Speaker Alban Bagbin made a formal statement regarding a recent letter from the presidency before adjourning the House indefinitely.

In a statement dated March 20, 2024, the Caucus criticized Bagbin for unilaterally adjourning the House, asserting that this action undermines the government.

The listed business before the House that had to be suspended due to Bagbin’s decision included tax waivers, paper presentations, bill considerations, unresolved IDA facilities, and the approval of ministerial candidates.

“Point 10 of their 13-point statement read: “The decision of Mr Speaker to adjourn the House without recourse to its members, especially the Leadership, is most arbitrary, capricious and undemocratic. The settled practice has always been that the Leadership of the House guide the Chair to conduct the Business of the House.”

“The consequences are clear that the economy will suffer and government business will be undermined because of the pleasure of one man,” point-11 read.

The Majority also accused the Minority of supporting the Speaker due to their excessive desire for power fueled by animosity towards the government.

  • 2023 was the warmest year in history – WMO

2023 was the warmest year in history – WMO

The most recent update from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed that 2023 stands as the hottest year on record, with global temperatures surpassing the pre-industrial baseline by 1.45 degrees Celsius, with a margin of uncertainty at ±0.12 degrees Celsius.

This past year also marked the warmest decade ever documented.

The report unveils a series of alarming milestones, as various climate metrics, such as greenhouse gas levels, surface temperatures, ocean heat, acidification, sea level rise, Antarctic sea ice coverage, and glacier retreat, not only surpassed previous records but significantly exceeded them.

The consequences of these climate shifts were profound, with heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and intensifying tropical cyclones causing widespread devastation, disrupting the lives of millions and resulting in extensive economic losses amounting to billions of dollars.

The persistence of extreme weather patterns in 2023 continued to inflict severe socio-economic repercussions globally.

Widespread extreme heat events affected numerous regions, while devastating wildfires ravaged Hawaii, Canada, and Europe, leading to loss of life, widespread property destruction, and significant air pollution.

Flooding triggered by intense rainfall associated with Mediterranean Cyclone Daniel caused devastation in Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, with Libya experiencing particularly heavy loss of life.

The aftermath of these events, including food insecurity, population displacement, and impacts on vulnerable communities, remains pressing concerns exacerbated by weather and climate hazards worldwide.

Ocean heat content reached its highest level in the 65-year observational record.

WMO Secretary-General Prof. Celeste Saulo underscored the organization’s commitment to intensify collaboration with the international community to tackle the magnitude of this crisis.

“WMO  and  its  Members  are  expanding  life-saving  early  warning  services  to  achieve  the ground-breaking Early Warnings For All initiative. A new Global Greenhouse Gas Watch seeks to provide scientifically-based information for climate change mitigation. The transition to renewable energy must be supported by tailor-made weather and climate services.”

“We must make climate information more accessible and actionable to serve society. I hope this report will raise awareness of the vital need to scale up the urgency and ambition of climate action.”

In order to achieve success, Prof. Saulo stressed the critical importance of leveraging efforts across the entire value chain, including enhancing climate data and monitoring capabilities, bolstering prediction and projection accuracy, and investing in capacity-building initiatives.

  • NHIA to go after hospitals charging for services covered by NHIS

NHIA to go after hospitals charging for services covered by NHIS

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is actively combatting illegal payments, commonly referred to as “copayment,” levied on clients within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at certain healthcare facilities.

Instances of some health service providers charging for services covered by the NHIS, identified as copayments, have been deemed illegal.

The NHIA has issued warning letters to implicated providers and is collaborating with stakeholders to eliminate this practice.

Mr. Mohammed Awudu, the NHIA District Director for Talensi and Nabdam in the Upper East Region, stated, “Some of our members have expressed concern that they still pay for some services covered by the NHIS,” says Mr Mohammed Awudu, the District Director of the NHIA in charge of Talensi and Nabdam, Upper East Region.

“…And we are working to stop those illegal payments that are happening at some of the hospitals because it is affecting our members.”

“The agreement we have with the service providers is that under the benefit package, they should give us 100 per cent of the services that we have agreed with them, and under no circumstances should they charge for any services we have contracted with them”.

According to Mr. Awudu, the NHIA has agreements with service providers stipulating that they must provide 100% of the services outlined in the benefit package without charging for any contracted services.

Mr. Awudu disclosed this during an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a data validation forum for research conducted by the Rural Initiative for Self-Empowerment Ghana in the Nabdam and Talensi districts.

The research aimed to evaluate the utilization of NHIS by pregnant women for Antenatal Care (ANC) services in the two districts.

Findings indicated concerns over copayments among pregnant women in both districts, along with limited knowledge of NHIS policy coverage and challenges accessing medicines under the Scheme.

While satisfaction levels varied, Mr. Awudu emphasized the NHIA’s commitment to addressing concerns and urged Ghanaians with inactive NHIS memberships to renew and encouraged those yet to register to do so to access benefits.

Additionally, Mr. Awudu highlighted the NHIA’s comprehensive sensitization efforts, targeting not only pregnant women but also service providers, midwives, and nurses, to ensure widespread understanding of NHIS policies and coverage.

I’ve seen no returns on my investments – CEO of Fantasy Dome

The Founder and CEO of Fantasy Dome, Leslie Quaynor, disclosed that he has yet to recover any of his investments from the venue since its establishment in 2018, now demolished.

During an interview on Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Mr Quaynor explained that since the inception of Fantasy Dome five years ago, it has faced operational challenges, primarily due to the impact of COVID-19 and other factors.

He further highlighted the terms of his lease agreement, noting that the Trade Fair Company was obligated to provide a six-month notice and alternative space within the Trade Fair for relocation.

“Just when I started business in 2019, COVID came the next year. So for the next 2 and half years, I couldn’t work. And then right after COVID, around 2021 and 2022, they said they were going to do redevelopment. Then they started digging holes, which didn’t make it a medium to do business.”

“So technically not only have I not worked, I haven’t even recouped any of my investments,” he added.

Mr Quaynor emphasized the exorbitant costs associated with relocating the dome, particularly due to the condition of the Trade Fair grounds.

Despite efforts to negotiate with CEO of Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited, Dr. Agnes Adu, for an alternative arrangement, Quaynor’s requests were unsuccessful, ultimately preventing Fantasy Dome from operating.

“They came back and said they are going to do re-rolling, so you have to move. But within the lease I had, they had to give me six months’ notice to relocate me within the trade fair for the balance of my term,” he said.

“The toughest part is that the trade fair is filled with clay so you would have to excavate all of it and fill it. And that alone was two million dollars,” he said.

“Unfortunately when she [Dr. Agnes Adu, CEO of Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited] came and said we would make space for you at the other side of the Trade Fair, I said to her, ‘Does that make sense? It’s only a year left to the end of my lease, you want me to spend 4 million dollars to do just a platform, for me to leave in a year,’ he added.

Missing laptops will not affect 2024 elections – EC

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) responsible for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, has reassured the public that the missing laptops from the Commission do not harbor sensitive data that could endanger the integrity of the 2024 elections.

Speaking during a press conference convened on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, Asare aimed to dispel misunderstandings regarding the reported disappearance of the devices.

Contrary to assertions by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) belonging to the EC, Asare clarified that only five laptops belonging to the Commission were missing, not the BVDs as alleged.

The matter surfaced when the Minority caucus in Parliament raised concerns on Tuesday, March 19, claiming that seven BVDs had vanished from the EC’s premises, leading to calls for a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Nevertheless, Dr. Asare reaffirmed that all biometric devices under the Commission’s custody were securely stored, ensuring preparedness for the upcoming elections.

He assured the populace that the missing laptops contained no crucial data that could jeopardize the electoral process.

“We are fully prepared for the election, and I can confirm that five laptops have been stolen. These laptops do not contain any sensitive information. They do not pose any risks,” he said.

“BVDs are used for verification, while BVRs are for registration. The two devices must be connected for use. If someone steals the BVDs, they cannot be utilized,” he explained.

‘Angry’ Bawumia calls out GRA for harassing business with tax

The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for what he perceives as excessive harassment of businesses in the name of tax collection.

Dr. Bawumia expressed his concerns during a dialogue with members of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, seeking their input as the manifesto committee crafts ideas for the upcoming 2024 elections.

He attributed the current situation to the GRA’s practice of setting unrealistic targets for its officers, forcing them to resort to overly taxing existing businesses.

To address this issue, Dr. Bawumia pledged to implement a flat tax rate in 2025 and provide tax amnesty to all businesses upon assuming office.

“They are harassing businesses. That harassment is coming from the sort of target that are created at their office. They are setting unrealistic targets. And this is because the tax base is so narrow you say to them, this is your target for this month, and they are trying to figure out where do I go.

“Then for them, it is very easy, you go back to where you had it the last time. You go to taxpayers, the people who are already paying taxes and then you have to come up with a new reason why they should pay more and so you come up with all sorts of stuff.”

‘Because of the harassment and the need to make money, we are going to start with a clean slate in 2025. And that is why in 2025, we are going to grant a tax amnesty to all businesses and individuals and start afresh.

“So we are going to start the new system, it’s a flat tax system so we are going to wipe the slate clean for every individual and business.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) has restated the strength of its operational frameworks in anticipation of the 2024 general elections.

In a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC overseeing Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, assured the media that the Commission’s infrastructure is adequately equipped to manage the forthcoming elections with integrity and security.

Dr. Asare underscored that despite the absence of several laptops, the electoral process’s integrity remains intact. He conveyed optimism that the 2024 elections would be recognized as Ghana’s most successful electoral event to date.

Regarding the concerns surrounding the missing equipment, Dr. Asare confirmed ongoing collaboration with law enforcement agencies to locate the laptops and hold accountable those responsible.

“What we said was that five laptops are missing. We are working with the security agencies to arrest and prosecute the suspects. We are also hearing people asking how secure are your systems.

“We want to assure each and everyone and the good people of our country that our systems are secured and very robust. We are going to organize another transparent, credible election which will go down as one of the best.

“Anyone who thinks that there’s a problem, we are convinced and certain that all our systems are secured and we are ready for the activities of the year.”

  • Akufo-Addo doesn’t behave like the lawyer he claims he is – Odike

The leader of the United Front Party (UFP), Akwasi Addai Odike, has raised concerns regarding the legal qualifications of President Akufo-Addo.

Mr Odike expressed doubts during a panel discussion on Onua FM on March 20, 2024, citing issues with Akufo-Addo’s handling of constitutional matters and the perceived imbalance of power within Ghana’s governmental framework.

He questioned the president’s legal background, noting discrepancies between Akufo-Addo’s actions and expectations for someone with legal expertise. Particularly, Odike criticized Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to initiate a review of Ghana’s constitution despite perceived shortcomings.

Mr Odike highlighted the concentration of power in the presidency, which he argued undermines the necessary checks and balances crucial for upholding democratic principles.

He expressed concern over Akufo-Addo’s ability to appoint ministers and influence judicial appointments, suggesting that such control undermines the independence of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

“Someone says Akufo-Addo is a lawyer; I have my doubts since Akufo-Addo became president. He has never been a lawyer before, because, for us laymen, we wouldn’t behave the way Akufo-Addo is behaving when it comes to the rule of law.

“First of all, Akufo-Addo is saying that he doesn’t see anything wrong with Ghana’s constitution…I have always been advocating for constitutional review.

“Look, he has control over the executive and the judiciary. Why has he appointed a parliamentary minister? You see, the three arms of government are supposed to work independently, but the president is able to go to parliament and appoint ministers, which is wrong,” he said.

He added “The president has the power to appoint a minister of parliamentary affairs and also appoints justices and promotes judges.

“And the lawyers in this country, if these things are happening here, how do you expect the country to progress? Nana Addo has taken the whole nation to ransom.”

Fire destroys parts of Adenta Community Basic School

A fire has devastated the staff common room of Adenta Community Basic School, situated in the Adentan Municipality of Accra.

The fire broke out late on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. While the exact cause remains unidentified, fire officials have reported extensive damage to furniture, books, and school records.

Adenta’s Municipal Chief Executive, Ebenezer Doku, stated that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Mr Doku recounted receiving a call around 7:50 pm and rushing to the scene, where he found the fire already extinguished by the Fire Service.

He noted peculiarities such as a broken-in headteacher’s office and a relocated fridge emitting smoke.

However, it remains uncertain whether the individual who moved the fridge ignited the blaze.

Meanwhile, school authorities, speaking on condition of anonymity, reassured that the incident will not disrupt academic activities.

“Somewhere around 7:50pm, I was still in the office when I had a call that the Adenta Community Basic School was on fire, so I rushed there and when I got there, the Fire Service had already quenched the fire and when I got close, I realised the headteacher’s office was broken into and the fridge moved and there was smoke but when I asked the security man, he said he also came for night duties and saw the fridge downstairs and so as of now, we don’t know whether it was the same person who moved the fridge that set the place ablaze.

  • Ghana tops African countries in Concessional Lending debt to IMF

Ghana tops African countries in Concessional Lending debt to IMF

As of January 31, 2024, Ghana retained its position as the foremost debtor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Africa concerning Concessional Lending and Debt Relief Trust.

The country’s indebtedness to the Fund amounted to 2.088 billion Special Drawing Rights, equivalent to $2.77 billion.

According to the IMF’s Quarterly Finances for January 2024, Ghana’s outstanding concessional loans to the institution had increased compared to the figures recorded in July 2023. This surge followed Ghana’s receipt of a $600 million bailout package from the IMF in both June 2023 and January 2024, aimed at revitalizing its economy amid prevailing economic challenges.

Ghana’s concessional loan outstanding to the IMF represented 11.0% of Africa’s total indebtedness to the tune of SDR 18.804 billion. Additionally, Ghana demonstrated a commitment to debt repayment by remitting SDR 61 million, equivalent to $81.13 million, to the IMF.

The loans extended to Ghana by the IMF fall under concessional lending, featuring low-interest financing. Specifically, the PRG Trust offers loans under concessional terms to qualifying low-income member nations.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya maintained their positions as the second and third-largest debtors to the IMF in Africa, respectively, as of January 1, 2024.

  • My SHS biology teacher introduced me to homosexuality – 25-year-old Ghanaian narrates

My SHS biology teacher introduced me to homosexuality – 25-year-old Ghanaian narrates

A 25-year-old man has shared how his male biology teacher back at Senior High School (SHS) allegedly initiated him into homosexuality.

In an interview on Onua FM, he disclosed that he was the said teacher’s favorite student as he performed well in class.

He revealed that his ordeal started when the teacher asked him to follow him to his house.

“My teacher in SHS initiated me into gayism at age 16, about to turn 17. I was a science student, so the teacher taught me biology, but I didn’t know that he was into that. I was a very intelligent student, so he became fond of me, the same as some other teachers.

According to him the teacher invites home to dine with him, helps him learn as well as sometimes provide his needs.

“‘When we got there”, according to him he prepared food, and served him, not long after he began showing pornographic videos on his phone, which they watched together.

He added it was getting late so he told the teacher he had to go home and prepare because he would be returning for preps.

However, his tutor told him there was no need for him to go home, as he could shower at his place and even have “my prep time in his bungalow”.

“He began his advances when he started giving me preferential treatment. He often sends me to get something for him, or he asks that I escort him to places. He also sometimes supports me financially. When I got to form three, I began going for preps in the school even though I was a day student. On one of the nights I closed from preps, he asked me to follow him to his house. When we got there, he prepared food, and we ate. While there, he began showing pornographic videos on his phone, which we watched together.

The young boy narrated that he heeded the teacher’s advice and went to the bathroom to bathe, later  his teacher  joined him naked.

“After we were done eating, I told him I had to go home and prepare because I would be returning for preps. He told me there was no need for me to go home and return to school, as I could shower at his place and even have my prep time in his bungalow, after which I could return home. So, I went to his bathroom to take my bath, and while there, he joined me naked. Because he was my teacher, I sought to cover myself because I was shy around him, but he told me not to worry,” he stated.

He said he attempted to cover himself but his teacher told him not to bother as he saw nothing wrong with that.

The 25-year old concluded that his teacher began touching him and asked that he had sex with him.

“… At that instant, he began to fondle my penis. At that instance, it did not occur to me that he was gay and he could have sex with me. All of a sudden, he held my penis into his mouth and was licking it. He asked me if I could have sex with him. I stood quiet for a long time because I didn’t know what to say, and then it happened. It was a painful experience, but he was my teacher, and he helped me sometimes, so whatever he said, I did,” he added.

  • Dr Ayew Afriye chastises Mahama over Agenda 111 comment

Dr Ayew Afriye chastises Mahama over Agenda 111 comment

Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama for inconsistency in his recent remarks regarding the Agenda 111 Hospitals project undertaken by the Akufo-Addo-led government.

Dr. Afriye pointed out that Mahama’s characterization of the project as overly ambitious contradicts the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s manifesto prior to the 2020 presidential election.

In reference to a press conference he led for the Majority in Parliament on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Dr. Afriye emphasized the need for leaders to uphold consistency in their statements and actions.

He argued that Mahama’s suggestion to scale back the project to around 40 hospitals was inconsistent with the NDC’s promise to construct approximately 96 hospitals.

“The press conference led by myself on behalf of the majority was to drum home a situation that, if not checked… this country will be led by leaders based upon what they say and not what they mean, and that is based upon the claim by the former president that we should have focused on Agenda 111 by stating that maybe we will do about 40 hospitals and that he thinks it was an over-ambitious position for the president and then also that it was unrealistic.

“I think that couldn’t have been the position of the former president. It makes him absolutely inconsistent,” he stated in reference to a press conference he led for the Majority in Parliament earlier on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

As a guest on Joynews’ PM Express on Tuesday night, Dr. Nana Afriye, also the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, praised President Akufo-Addo’s ambition of establishing 111 new hospitals as a commendable step toward achieving universal healthcare delivery in Ghana.

He defended the government’s optimism regarding the project, citing historical examples of bold leadership and policy implementation despite initial skepticism.

Initiated by President Akufo-Addo on August 17, 2021, the Agenda 111 project aims to build 111 district hospitals nationwide to enhance healthcare accessibility.

“Therefore, what was the reason why the NDC came out with this? Was it that it was mere talk, mere rhetoric? And if you say we are over-ambitious and we could have cut it to 40, you are going to 96. So what were you thinking about when you were going for yours, and what were we also thinking?” he stated.

“We would go for optimism. All over the world, there have been leaders who have been bold; they will come out with a policy, and people will say no, you can’t do it. They may start, and others will complete it. In history, they have been vindicated,” he added.

Despite delays due to economic challenges, Dr. Afriye expressed hope that 50 to 60 hospitals would be ready for commissioning by year-end, citing issues such as land litigation as contributing factors to the construction delay.

He contrasted the modest number of hospitals built and commissioned under previous administrations with the scale of President Akufo-Addo’s Agenda 111, characterizing it as groundbreaking.

JB murder: My marriage ended because my son was falsely accused – Vincent Bossu’s mother cries out

Madam Juliet, mother of Vincent Bossu, the second accused acquitted in the murder case of Abuakwa North Member of Parliament, JB Danquah Adu, expressed her anguish, attributing the loss of her marriage to her accused son.

Tears streamed down her face as she shared her sentiments moments after her son was freed of conspiracy to rob charges by the High Court in Accra. She maintained her unwavering belief in her son’s innocence throughout the ordeal.

Speaking to EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, after the court session, Madam Juliet expressed gratitude to God for answered prayers.

On Tuesday, March 19, State Prosecutors, led by Mrs. Sefakor Batse, concluded their case after presenting eight witnesses, with ASP Augustus Nkrumah, the investigator, as the final witness.

Following the Prosecution’s closure, the High Court ruled in a submission of no case, asserting prima facie evidence against Daniel Asiedu, also known as Sexy Don Don, for the murder and robbery charges. Asiedu pleaded not guilty and remains in custody awaiting trial.

The trial judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, also found no prima facie case against Bossu and subsequently acquitted and discharged him.

Both Bossu and Asiedu have been in remand for the past eight years.

Reportedly, moments after Bossu’s acquittal, he broke down in tears in the courtroom.

The late JB Danquah Adu, former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, was murdered on February 8, 2016.

Justice Marfo has instructed Sexy Don Don to submit a witness statement, along with any other persons he intends to call as witnesses, by April 15.

Earlier, ASP Augustus Nkrumah, the investigator, concluded his testimony as the 8th Prosecution Witness after cross-examination by defense lawyers led by Yaw Danquah.

  • Special needs school cut off national grid since February due to GHS66k unpaid bill to ECG

Special needs school cut off national grid since February due to GHS66k unpaid bill to ECG

As part of its efforts to collect outstanding debts, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected power to the Garden City Special School located in Asokore Mampong, Ashanti Region.

The school has reportedly been without electricity since February 14, 2024, owing to an unpaid debt of GH₵66,000 to the utility company.

In an interview with JoyNews, the headmistress of the school, Dr. Roselyn Frimpong Agyapong, revealed that despite appeals to the Municipal Director of Education and the Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, efforts to persuade ECG to restore power to the school have been unsuccessful.

Expressing concern over the situation, Dr. Agyapong emphasized the need for greater attention to be given to the education of children with disabilities in Ghana, highlighting their often neglected status.

Furthermore, aside from the electricity challenge, the boys’ dormitory at the school has collapsed, forcing learners to sleep in classrooms, exposed to the elements.

Garden City Special School serves as a vital government facility catering to learners with special educational needs, covering regions such as Ashanti, parts of Eastern, Western, and Northern.

With approximately 192 learners, the school operates on full government subsidies and does not charge any fees to students.

Dr. Agyapong urged the government to urgently address the needs of special schools across the country, including the Garden City Special School, expressing frustration over the current situation.

“The government needs to pay more attention to children with disabilities in Ghana, especially their education. These children are often neglected in everything, and that is not right,” she added.

You must think twice before assenting to anti-gay bill – Akufo-Addo told

Local Governance Expert, Dr. Frederick Oduro has asserted that given Ghana’s current economic circumstances, no President would be cautious about assenting to the LGBT+ Bill.

This statement follows the Office of the President’s directive to Parliament, urging a halt on transmitting the LGBTQ+ bill for assent until the Supreme Court renders its ruling on the matter.

In a letter addressed to Parliament and signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, it was clarified that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Value Bill faces two ongoing court cases.

Thus, Parliament is advised against transmitting the bill to the Presidency until the Supreme Court resolves the issue.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the Local Governance Expert highlighted the attention the bill has drawn to Ghana.

“In the circumstance, you are kindly requested to cease and desist from transmitting the bill to the President until the matter before the Supreme Court is resolved,” Mr. Bediatuo stated.

Commenting on the development on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the Local Governance Expert indicated that the bill has brought some level of attention to Ghana.

“Until this bill was presented to Parliament, Ghana was not considered anti-LGBTQ, but in as much as our laws do not permit its operation, we did not come out specifically to say we are going to put people in jail for practising it or promoting it.

“Now, we are in a financial situation that calls for support from these institutions and we also have this bill ahead of us. Every President who will find himself in this situation is bound to think twice before assenting to that kind of bill,” Dr. Oduro stated.

He expressed concerns regarding the Constitutional provision of Private Member’s Bill, particularly in cases where financial implications arise.

“The government is not obligated to assent to bills with financial implications. Thus, we find ourselves in a dilemma,” he added.

The primary objective of the session was to provide interested parties with an opportunity to propose amendments to the Bill as deemed necessary.

Prominent lawmakers such as Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Member of Parliament for Techiman North; Patricia Appiagyei, Member of Parliament for Asokwa; and Gizella Tetteh-Agbotsui, Member of Parliament for Awutu-Agbotui, spearheaded the session.

In addition to parliamentarians, the engagement witnessed the active participation of legal experts representing academia and civil society organizations.

The engagement served as a forum for in-depth discussions and deliberations, with stakeholders offering valuable insights and recommendations to enhance the proposed Bill.

Through this collaborative process, Parliament aims to ensure that the final legislation comprehensively addresses the complexities of spousal property rights, promoting fairness and equity in accordance with constitutional principles.

  • Stop lying to Ghanaians just because you want to be president – Tema MCE to Mahama

Stop lying to Ghanaians just because you want to be president – Tema MCE to Mahama

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Yohane Amarh Ashitey, has advised former president John Dramani Mahama to uphold his stature as a statesman and refrain from spreading falsehoods and ambiguity.

In a statement shared on social media, Ashitey emphasized that the words of the former president carry significant weight, and therefore, making baseless allegations could undermine Ghana’s reputation.

“Former President John Mahama must stop shooting off his mouth anyhow at the least opportunity because not only does that undermine his own credibility, it undermines the peace and cohesion of our country,” the MCE wrote.

Ashitey’s remarks come in response to Mahama’s recent assertion that Ghana is the most indebted country globally.

Mahama purportedly made this claim while addressing the Omanhene of Wiaso, citing Ghana’s alleged USD 31 billion debt to China.

The MCE pointed out that a simple internet search would reveal that countries like the United States, Japan, and Germany have far greater debts than Ghana.

He highlighted Mahama’s tendency to make unsubstantiated claims, referencing previous instances where the former president alleged that Ghanaian students performed poorly in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and claimed to have been denied his post-presidential benefits, both without sufficient evidence.

“Ghana indeed does owe China USD31.1 billion and is the country with the
most debt to China among indebted poor countries, but it is not true that Ghana is the country with the highest debt in the world

“All he had to do was google it, and he would know that the United States owes over 34 trillion dollars, Japan owes over 9 trillion dollars, and even Germany owes over 2.4 trillion dollars. Ghana does not even owe anywhere near 100 billion dollars, so how can we be the most indebted country in the world?” he wrote.

“This was the same John Mahama who claimed that Ghanaian children write a
substandard version of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination
(WASSCE) without any proof, and also told the public that he had been denied his
benefits as a former president, even though this has since been debunked with hardcore documentary evidence,” he said.

“So please, Mr. former President, please stop lying to Ghanaians,” he added.

Jean Mensa falls short of the standards set by Charlotte Osei – Ras Mubarak

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, has raised concerns about the capability of the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s chairperson, Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa, to effectively manage the commission and oversee electoral processes.

Mr Mubarak’s remarks follow the confirmation by the EC, led by Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa, during a meeting with Parliament’s leadership on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, that seven biometric verification devices of the Electoral Commission are unaccounted for.

Expressing his apprehensions, Mubarak highlighted what he perceives as a departure from the standards established by former Electoral Commissioner Charlotte Osei.

He suggested that this deviation from precedent raises doubts regarding the ongoing electoral procedures’ credibility.

In a post shared on his social media platform, Mr Mubarak asserted, “the @ECGhanaOfficial boss is not fit to head or conduct any elections. She falls way too short of the standards Charlotte Osei was judged by.”

Moreover he dismissed the claim of missing biometric machines as a mere diversion tactic to conceal underlying motives. He remarked, “Claims of missing biometric machines are all smokescreens. Something fishy is brewing.”

Man provides more details on PDS scandal

Ghanaian media personality Austine Woode, has declared his unwavering commitment to addressing the controversies surrounding the Power Distribution Services (PDS) scandal until clarity is brought to light.

Taking to the X platform, Mr. Woode expressed his frustration at the complex nature of the scandal, admitting that despite his efforts to raise awareness through verbal discussions, he has found it challenging to provide a comprehensive explanation in writing.

However, he provided a link to provide more details surrounding the scandal.

“For years, I have spoken about the PDS scandal but unlike me, I’ve failed to write about it because it is so winding. I told myself I will need a video to explain it better but please read this below SINCE ALMOST everything is fact,” he added.

The PDS scandal, which sent shockwaves through the nation’s energy sector, revolves around the abrupt termination of a concession agreement between the Government of Ghana and Power Distribution Services Ghana Limited (PDS).

The agreement, aimed at transferring the management and operation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to PDS, was abruptly canceled amidst allegations of fraud and contractual breaches.

Despite extensive investigations and inquiries conducted by government agencies and international partners, the full scope of the scandal remains elusive to many Ghanaians.

In July 2019, PDS was found to have submitted invalid insurance security for the takeover of ECG assets.

Originally mandated to provide payment securities in the form of a demand guarantee or a letter of credit issued by a bank, PDS encountered difficulties in obtaining a bank guarantee.

Consequently, they sought permission to utilize a demand guarantee issued by an A-rated insurance company.

PDS then submitted payment securities in the form of demand guarantees issued by a Qatari insurance firm, Al Koot Insurance and Reinsurance.

However, subsequent investigations revealed fabricated letters and forged signatures associated with these guarantees. Additionally, it was discovered that Al Koot lacked the financial capacity and authorization to issue such guarantees.

This initiative aims to promote computer literacy and technological proficiency among young Ghanaian students.

The government will provide pre-loaded laptops to each SHS student nationwide.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, this initiative is in line with the government’s broader objectives of enhancing e-learning and digitalization.

It also aligns with the goal of leveraging technological advancements to prepare Ghanaian students for the digital age, often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The One Student, One Laptop initiative seeks to enhance Senior High School Education by offering Teaching and Learning Management Systems, Digital Learning Content, and educational devices to all Senior High and TVET Schools across the country.

This initiative was first announced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last year, underscoring the government’s commitment to secondary education.

This commitment has been evident since 2017, with the government’s policy of providing free education at the secondary level.

The laptops provided will come preloaded with educational programs, including textbooks, enabling students to access learning materials offline from anywhere in the country, even without internet connectivity.

With the introduction of these laptops, students will no longer need to carry heavy textbooks, marking a significant shift in educational practices.

Distribution of the laptops to SHS students will begin immediately after the President’s launch on Monday, March 25.

During his inaugural visit to the Central Command after being appointed by President Akufo-Addo, Major General Onwona stressed the importance of the army undergoing comprehensive training to effectively respond to potential terrorist attacks.

He underscored that Ghana is not immune to the terrorism threats prevalent in the surrounding region.

Addressing troops during his visit, the Chief of Army Staff commended their dedication and sacrifices in ensuring peace and security both locally and nationally.

He urged all soldiers to uphold professionalism and diligence, especially during the upcoming election period, to guarantee a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

He emphasized, “We all have the responsibility to train and be adequately prepared to respond appropriately and promptly to any imminent terrorist threats.”

Additionally, Major General Onwona paid a courtesy visit to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, where the importance of the army in maintaining peace and security was underscored. Otumfuo expressed confidence in the Chief of Army Staff for a successful tenure.

Mahama is a leader with an unblemished record, vote for him – Sammy Gyamfi to Ghanaians

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, passionately urged Ghanaians to overwhelmingly support the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, during an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV.

In his address, Mr Gyamfi highlighted Mahama’s achievements, stressing his dependability and competence in steering Ghana forward.

He commended Mahama’s visionary leadership, praising his inherent integrity and honesty.

“H.E Mahama is trustworthy, he has a proven track record that shows he turned this nation around. He’s tried and tested, he’s an experienced leader and that is the kind of leader we need now, an experienced leader and not an experiment.

“He’s the one who has the transformational agenda and vision that can work for Mother Ghana. President Mahama [former] exudes honesty seamlessly. He’s natively an honest person.”

“We know that tag was nothing but propaganda. He has been vindicated by posterity. None of the corruption allegations peddled against him by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia and the NPP stood the test of time.

Mr Gyamfi also tackled corruption allegations against Mahama, dismissing them as baseless and vindicated by time.

“They have not been able to adduce a scintilla to buttress any of the allegations that he padded the cost of the Ridge Hospital, allegations that he has stolen money to build luxury buildings, and hotels in Dubai. We know that all those things were fabricated lies by the NPP and their cohorts to tarnish the reputation of Mahama.

“Mahama is incorruptible, he remains squeaky clean, his integrity is unassailable, and above all he’s honest.”

“Unlike Bawumia who is reputed as a liar, because he came to office on the back of many lies. They have been exposed.”
