Online School Licensing and Inspection System launched by Bawumia

In a significant stride towards enhancing the quality of education in Ghana, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated the School Licensing and Inspection Management System (SLIMS), a groundbreaking initiative by the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA).

The launch, which took place yesterday at the Alisa Hotel Accra, aims to modernize educational administration in both private and public schools. Its objective is to bolster efficiency and transparency by streamlining inspection planning and execution, automating report generation, and ensuring immediate and transparent transactions.

Addressing the gathering, Vice President Dr. Bawumia commended NaSIA for its innovative endeavors in transforming education regulation through SLIMS. He remarked, “The system fundamentally embodies the Government’s commitment to leveraging technology to revolutionize education and ensure that every child in Ghana accesses high-quality education.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the significant role of private education providers in Ghana’s educational landscape, acknowledging a historical lack of regulation before 2017.

The NPP administration, as outlined in its 2016 manifesto, pledged to enhance collaboration with the private sector for quality education delivery. This commitment materialized through the establishment of NaSIA, entrusted with overseeing private schools.

“In 2017, when the Akufo-Addo-led administration set out to fulfill the promises we made in our 2016 Manifesto, this included shifting the structure and content of our education system. We have clothed the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) with the needed regulatory powers for efficient supervision and regulation of pre-tertiary schools. This has empowered, strengthened, and equipped the Authority as an independent body to fully carry out its mandate leading to the development of SLIMS,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

The Inspector General of Schools at NaSIA, Dr. Hilda Haggar Ampadu, expressed gratitude for the government and stakeholders’ support in implementing SLIMS.

She noted, “The launch of SLIMS signifies a significant milestone in our journey towards enhancing educational quality and accountability in Ghana. This system will streamline our inspection and licensing processes, alleviate constraints due to limited resources and cumbersome procedures, and empower schools with the tools necessary to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.”

Before the Authority’s comprehensive digitalization initiative in June 2019, school inspections were labor-intensive and manual, resulting in excessive paperwork and significant delays in generating inspection reports.

The licensing process was equally burdensome, hindering progress. To address these challenges, the Authority revamped its Inspection Evaluation Framework (IEF), Inspection Handbook, and digitized forms.

This overhaul markedly streamlined the inspection process, reducing the average inspection time per school from a week to just a day, and condensing the inspection report length from 46 pages to a concise 10 pages.

Currently, the Authority has successfully implemented the Inspection and Licensing Modules, with the remaining three modules in progress, promising further enhancements for seamless processes.

SLIMS will be accessible through password-controlled login and will feature mini dashboards for schools to monitor their progress and seamlessly submit data to the Ministry of Education’s dashboard.

    Ban on Borteyman lands lifted

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has officially lifted the ban on access to the Borteyman enclave and its surrounding lands, effective immediately.

Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, made the announcement during a meeting at the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), where a comprehensive plan of the area was presented by the Lands Commission.

“We have formally lifted the security ban that restricted access to the Borteyman enclave and its adjoining lands. Therefore, land and property owners within the enclave are now free to access their properties,” stated Quartey.

In February 2016, REGSEC, under the chairmanship of the then Regional Minister, designated Borteyman and its neighboring areas as security zones due to intelligence suggesting potential clashes between Top Kings and Empire Builders, embroiled in a longstanding land dispute.

Attendees at the meeting included representatives of the Nungua stool lands, officials of the Lands Commission, members of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, and staff of the Nungua Traditional Council.

Following deliberations at a meeting held on February 8, 2024, REGSEC decided to task the Lands Commission with presenting the status of affairs and demarcation of boundaries following a court ruling on land ownership.

The Survey and Mapping Division of the Lands Commission carried out the demarcation exercise to clarify the subject matter of the court judgment, identifying boundaries encompassing 465 acres, 114.33 acres, and 62.04 acres, as specified in court judgments.

Maxwell Adu Nsafoah, Technical Director of Lands at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, confirmed that the Lands Commission submitted a report on the demarcation of the land to the Minister for further action.

Robert Hackman Antwi, Chief Examiner at the Survey and Mapping Division of the Lands Commission, presented the composite plan, detailing adjustments in land measurements based on the site plans utilized.

Nii Bortey Okplen Djalesane II, Oblantai Mantse of the Nungua Traditional Area, expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Lands Commission, Ministry of Lands, and REGSEC in addressing the land dispute, which had persisted for 23 years, acknowledging the challenges encountered along the way.

    Doctors at KATH suspend strike

The strike action by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has been suspended following several meetings with stakeholders and management.

As a result, the doctors will immediately resume their full clinical, academic, and administrative duties at the facility.

This decision was communicated in a notice issued by Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, dated March 14.

The strike, initiated on Wednesday, March 13, stemmed from accommodation challenges, with claims that over 30 colleagues had received eviction notices and were given a one-week ultimatum to vacate their bungalows at Danyame.

The disruption in healthcare delivery caused frustration and inconvenience to patients.

In response to the situation, hospital management engaged in a series of meetings with the striking doctors and other stakeholders to address the issues.

Following these discussions, the doctors expressed satisfaction with the assurances from management and agreed to end the strike.

Ghana would have still been in a mess without COVID-19, Russia-Ukraine war – NPP MP

Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Kwaku Agyemang Kwarteng, has dismissed the notion that Ghana’s current economic crisis is solely attributable to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He emphasized that the crisis largely stems from decades of imprudent expenditure and mismanagement of economic resources.

“I am not with the school of thought that we were not going to experience a financial crisis but for these [Covid-19 and Russia-Ukraine War].

“The country was always going to have some financial crisis. It might have been delayed a little bit if Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war had not happened but the fact remains that with the path we were walking, we were definitely going to get here,” the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Obuasi West told Joynews in an interview.

Mr Kwarteng explained that while these global events might have postponed the crisis to some extent, Ghana was inevitably heading towards this situation due to its historical trajectory.

He highlighted a prevailing culture of overspending and a lack of fiscal discipline in Ghana’s economic management.

Attributing the crisis to a culmination of poor political and economic decisions over the years, Kwarteng stressed the need for a fundamental shift in mindset and a renewed commitment to fiscal responsibility.

He warned that without such changes, Ghana risks sliding towards failure as a state.

Election 2024: You can’t stop us from flying drones – NDC to EC

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has clarified that the party’s intention to employ drones during the 2024 general elections will exclusively cover constituencies within the Greater Accra Region.

On Wednesday, March 13, Nii Ashie Moore announced a strategic initiative to deploy drones for monitoring the 2024 general elections in the region. The party’s objective is to safeguard over two million votes and enhance monitoring mechanisms to prevent potential irregularities.

However, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), expressed opposition to the NDC’s plan in a media interview.

During an interview on the Citiuation Room on Citi TV, on Thursday, March 14, Mr. Ashie Moore emphasized that the EC lacks the authority to prohibit the Greater Accra Regional Office of the NDC from utilizing drones to monitor the elections.

Mr. Ashie Moore explained that the decision was made to protect the party’s votes and emphasized that the national leadership of the party played no role in the regional decision-making process. He asserted that they do not require approval from the national leadership to execute their plan.

“Let me put it on record that the EC doesn’t have that mandate, power, that right to say that one cannot use drones before, during and after elections in Ghana. There’s no single L. I that regulates that. We have written to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, when they give us the approval, we are going to use the drones.”

“This is a regional plan and not a national thing. We plan to do within our remit, the 34 constituencies within the Greater Accra Region. This has nothing to do with our party constitution or manifesto. The national may want to do some inputs or some adjustments, we don’t need approval to do those things. All that we want to do is to protect our votes,” he clarified.

“We realised a lot of anomalies during the last exercise [limited voter registration], so we decided that before, during and after 7th December elections we are going to use drones.”

I don’t trust anyone, even my family can disappoint me during elections – Greater Accra NDC chairman

The Greater Accra Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has stated that hardly does he depend on his family members for votes.

In an interview on Neat FM on March 13, 2024, he indicated at the polls everything is possible as individuals could turn back on their promises in the quest for personal gains.

He referenced a past election where a candidate obtained only one vote, despite having family members.

“When it comes to elections, it is very crucial, and I can say on authority that the people that I live with in the house, I don’t trust all of them.

“Let me quote again: the people that I live with in the house, I don’t trust them, so when it comes to an election, it is very crucial. So, I don’t trust anybody,” he said.

When questioned about the inclusion of his wife in this sentiment, Moore affirmed his stance, indicating that his mistrust encompasses even those closest to him.

“I am telling you; don’t you remember that a certain politician had one vote during the election? I am not speaking for the national executives of the party… I am talking about the Greater Accra Region, Ga-Dangbe.

“So, I want to take my security into my own hands guided by law. I do not want to go against the law, so I want to protect myself,” he added.

  • 45,000 Ghanaians are blind due to Glaucoma – GHS

45,000 Ghanaians are blind due to Glaucoma – GHS

Glaucoma has led to blindness in more than 45,000 individuals in Ghana, making it the country with the highest incidence of Glaucoma infections in Africa.

Statistics from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reveal that Glaucoma contributes to over 19% of all cases of blindness in the nation.

At present, approximately eight out of every 100 Ghanaians aged 30 and above, and nine out of every 100 Ghanaians aged 40 and above, suffer from Glaucoma.

During the 2024 World Glaucoma Week, Dr. Hornametor Afake, Head of the Eye Care Unit at GHS, informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Glaucoma is the primary cause of preventable irreversible blindness in Ghana and globally, unlike cataracts, which are reversible.

With a prevalence rate of 0.74%, Ghana has around 230,000 people living with blindness, with 54.4% of cases attributed to cataracts.

Glaucoma encompasses a range of eye disorders leading to progressive damage to the optic nerve, resulting in irreversible blindness if left untreated.

Major risk factors for Glaucoma include elevated intraocular pressure, African descent, family history, aging, steroid use, myopia, and hyperopia.

World Glaucoma Week, organized by the World Glaucoma Association, spans from March 10th to 16th, with the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” aiming to mobilize global efforts against Glaucoma-induced blindness.

Current global estimates indicate that 78 million people suffer from Glaucoma, with 7.7 million experiencing moderate to severe vision impairment or blindness. By 2040, it’s predicted that 111.8 million people will have Glaucoma.

Despite the high prevalence, more than half of Glaucoma cases go undetected in developed countries, rising to 90% in developing nations like Ghana.

Awareness campaigns are crucial as Glaucoma often manifests asymptomatically in its early stages, leading to late presentation and irreversible vision loss.

Regular eye examinations, beginning at age 20 and increasing in frequency with age, are recommended for early detection.

Similar to hypertension, Glaucoma is a chronic condition managed through medications like eye drops and surgery.

Healthcare providers, particularly at the primary level, are trained to detect Glaucoma early, especially in rural areas where most cases originate.

There’s a call for essential Glaucoma medications to be covered by the National Health Insurance scheme due to their often prohibitive costs.

Early detection, screening, and treatment are essential to prevent irreversible vision loss due to Glaucoma.

Widows Lydia Alhassan and Ophelia Hayford are well trained and wise women! – Captain Smart jabs Lilian Kumah

Renowned media personality Captain Smart has taken a subtle jab at Apostle Lilian Kumah, the widow of deputy finance minister, John Kumah.

The Onua TV presenter has advised her to take lessons from the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Mfantseman constituency, Ophelia Hayford.

Lydia Seyram Alhassan and Ophelia Hayford’s political journey commenced under tragic circumstances following the untimely death of their husbands, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko and Ekow Quansah Hayford respectively.

According to Captain Smart, widows Lydia Alhassan and Ophelia Hayford refrained from seeking public attention or exposing themselves to the public eye.

“Can you see how widows Lydia Alhassan and Ophelia are mourning their husbands? Have you seen them in public making noise? Did you ever see them talk about the death of their husbands? They have kept themselves as descent, well-cultured, and trained women. Learn from them,” he added.

The ongoing rift between Captain Smart and Apostle Lilian Kumah was initiated by Captain Smart’s allegations that John Kumah was deliberately poisoned due to his political ambitions, which he claimed posed a threat to certain party leaders.

In response, the widow refuted the claims and lodged a complaint with the police, demanding evidence from Captain Smart to support his allegations.

Reacting to the arrest complaint, Captain Smart emphasized that this challenging period is a time for the widow to isolate herself and mourn her husband, rather than engaging in lengthy discussions to attract attention.

John Kumah passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Per reports he collapsed in his office and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical attention.

Subsequently, due to a deterioration in his condition, he was flown out of the country.

Students at KSTS are being served breakfast without sugar – Tutor

A tutor at Kumasi Senior High Technical School (KSTS), Andy Owusu, has shed light on a concerning issue plaguing the institution.

Speaking on Oyerepa FM he stated that the shortage of sugar is impacting breakfast meals provided to the beneficiaries of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme.

According to Mr Owusu, the scarcity has led to disruptions in the morning routine, with a noticeable decline in student attendance at the dining hall.

He indicated that out of approximately 2,000 students enrolled at KSTS, only around 100 of them have been attending breakfast sessions due to the absence of sugar in their meals.

“If you come to KSTS we don’t have sugar to give to the students. Since Thursday, we have been feeding the breakfast without porridge. Most of them don’t even come to the dining hall to eat as a result of the lack of sugar in their breakfast. Out of 2,000 students about a 100 of them report to the dining hall,”he added.

The Free Senior High School (Free SHS) education policy in Ghana was initiated during the September 2017 administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Originating from one of the President’s campaign promises during the 2016 election period, the policy has evolved into a crucial component of Ghana’s educational system.

The programme has received massive criticism from various civil society organizations and educational institutions.

As per reports from Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) over 5.7 million Ghanaian students have benefitted from the programme.

The education think tank has revealed that the Free SHS policy has granted  a substantial increase in secondary school enrollment, soaring from 813,448 in the 2016/17 academic year to 1.3 million in the 2022/23 academic year.

The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) and other analysts have also highlighted fiscal and quality challenges that require careful reconsideration.

In November 2023, ISSER underscored the importance of reviewing specific aspects of the Free SHS program, including the sustainability of the government fully covering students’ tuition and costs within budget constraints.

The escalating teacher-student ratios in public SHS schools were also noted, impacting resources and learning.

The World Bank suggested means-testing and cost-sharing arrangements by parents to optimize program benefits and affordability.

In February 2024,  the Executive Director of the Institute for Education Services (IFEST),Dr. Peter Anti, emphasized that acknowledging funding challenges in the Free SHS program is crucial for making progress in addressing the issue.

“While we were doing double track, we should have made a conscious effort to improve the infrastructure in our schools. Now we don’t know what is happening, we decided to go and do other kinds of projects within the same education sector,” he said.

“ECG takes money from Ghanaians but fail to pay IPPs” – John Jinapor

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, John Jinapor, has claimed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) fails to allocate funds collected from Ghanaian consumers to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

According to him, ECG is burdened with a significant debt totaling $1.5 billion.

Mr Jinapor attributed this substantial debt to ECG’s failure to fulfill financial obligations to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and its inability to settle bills for purchased electricity in full.

Furthermore, Mr Jinapor criticized ECG for what he perceives as extravagant spending on items such as cables, malfunctioning meters, and unnecessary contracts.

Referring to a report from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) that he reviewed, Mr Jinapor highlighted instances where ECG allegedly mishandled funds, diverting substantial amounts away from debt repayment towards other expenses.

During a media interview, Jinapor urged ECG to provide transparent explanations for recent power outages experienced by Ghanaians.

“ECG owes $1.5 billion, when they take the money from Ghanaians, they fail to pay the IPPs and use the funds to do whatever they want with it and they fail to pay the full price of the power they purchase and PURC has brought a report that when ECG comes in possession of a substantial amount of money they refuse to pay the debt they owe, they spend the money recklessly, and this is an official report from the PURC.

“Some of the things they buy, they don’t even need it, and now they want to be buying fuel, which is not even their core duty, all these are a reason the finances aren’t adding up,” he said.

“I will strengthen NHIS when I become a president” – Mahama

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has committed to prioritizing the revival of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) should the NDC emerge victorious in the December 7 elections.

Expressing disappointment with the current administration, Mahama accused them of neglecting the NHIS, resulting in a decline in its effectiveness.

Speaking to church leaders in Tema, Mahama underscored the NDC’s commitment to ensuring the NHIS operates efficiently to deliver quality healthcare to all Ghanaians.

He criticized the alleged lack of financial support from the current government, suggesting that this has caused subscribers to struggle in accessing healthcare services without additional charges.

“The basic problem is that the NHIS has almost collapsed. This government is not paying money into the scheme. And once the scheme doesn’t get money, they also cannot pay the facilities for the claims that they make. And so they are forced to charge the patients when the patients come.

“Or else, all they will do is give you a folder, you go and see the doctor. That is the only service you get. For everything else, you have to go outside and pay with cash to get. And so it looks like we are coming back to the cash and carry days. And so what we will do is we will strengthen the NHIS again so that it can give the services that it was designed to give.”

  • Will Ghana’s economic woes resolve if Bawumia selects a running mate from Ashanti Region? – Kwesi Pratt quizzes

Will Ghana’s economic woes resolve if Bawumia selects a running mate from Ashanti Region? – Kwesi Pratt quizzes

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has criticized individuals who are resorting to ethnic considerations in the selection of a Running Mate for the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to CEO of STC and a prominent member of the Vice President’s campaign team, Nana Akomea, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to announce his Running Mate by May this year.

Various names, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, former EPA Boss Henry Kwabena Kokofu, and several others, have emerged as potential candidates.

However, there is a growing push within the party for Dr. Bawumia to choose a Running Mate from the Ashanti Region.

The rationale behind this argument is that, as a Northerner, Dr. Bawumia would benefit from partnering with an Asante to ensure political harmony within the NPP.

Speaking on Peace Fm, Kwesi Pratt opposed the trend, emphasizing that ethnicity should not be a determining factor in the selection of a Running Mate.

“If you pick an Asante, how does that resolve the economic problems confronting us? How does it bring down the inflation? How does that improve the value of the cedi?”

“If you are from the Eastern Region and love your country and have a vision to help in the development of the country and you and the presidential candidate are compatible…why not? Why should your coming from the Eastern Region be a qualification?”.

“He should look for competence. He should look for people with party history. He should select from among those who are able to do the work and stop those regionalism, ethnicity and so forth. It is all nonsensical”, he added.

Questioning the logic behind prioritizing ethnicity, Pratt argued that a person’s regional background should not serve as a qualification for the position.

Instead, he urged Dr. Bawumia to focus on selecting a Running Mate based on competence and alignment with his vision.

This marks a decline of 0.3 percentage points from January’s recorded rate of 23.5%.

During a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, Government Statistician Prof. Samuel Kobina Anim provided a comprehensive breakdown of the data.

He explained that the 23.2% figure indicates an overall increase in the prices of both goods and services.

“The February rate of inflation fell to 23.2 percent. This year-on-year inflation signifies that over a one-year period, prices of goods and services have gone up by 23.2 percent.

“This figure is a reversal of the marginal increase we recorded in the month of January 2024, when the slowdown that we have successfully recorded for the last seven months saw a marginal increase to 23.5 percent. In reverse, we have turned around this increase for January 2024 to a reverse of 23.2 percent.”

According to the Consumer Price Index data released by the GSS, food inflation stands at 27.0% while non-food inflation stands at 20.0%.

“From a food and non-food inflation perspective, food inflation for February 2024 stood at 27.0 percent and non-food inflation for the month of February 2024 stood at 20.0 percent.”

The leader of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, continues to tour various regions as part of his presidential campaign.

The politician, also known as Cheddar, along with his team, has now moved into the Northern Region after commencing their campaign weeks ago in Nima, a well-known suburb of Accra.

In a video titled ‘Tamale is on fire,’ shared on social media platforms on March 12, 2024, Cheddar provides glimpses of his visit to Tamale, where he engaged with different stakeholders to introduce himself and convey his message.

During his visit, Cheddar had the honor of meeting the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, at the Gbewa Palace, where he received a traditional smock and cap as gifts. “I am grateful to be embraced by your culture and to have a father who is a king in Yendi,” he expressed in a voice-over.

In another video capturing his interaction with students from the University of Development Studies, Cheddar emphasized his journey towards leadership, highlighting the importance of collective effort.

“I am grateful to be accepted as part of your culture and have a father, who is a king in Yendi,” he is heard saying in a voice-over.

According to GhanaWeb tracking, Cheddar’s campaign trail has not only covered Accra and the Northern Region but has also extended to the Ahafo Region.

Earlier this year, Cheddar declared his presidential aspirations under The New Force Movement. However, the group is awaiting certification from the Electoral Commission.

  • I was forced to use my own jersey for weightlifting competition – Ghana’s first gold medalist at 2023 African Games

I was forced to use my own jersey for weightlifting competition – Ghana’s first gold medalist at 2023 African Games

Ghana’s pioneering gold medalist at the 2023 African Games, Winnifred Ntumi, has disclosed that she had to utilize her personal jersey to represent the nation in the competition.

The weightlifter secured her initial silver medal in both the (49kg snatch) and (Clean and Jerk) events before clinching gold for Ghana on Sunday, amassing a total of three medals at the event.

In an interview with 3FM on the Sunrise show, Miss Ntumi expressed her disappointment and dissatisfaction with the equipment and support provided to her before the competition.

Despite her remarkable achievements, she lamented the inadequate provision and management afforded to her ahead of the Games.

Despite these challenges, Ntumi was filled with joy and satisfaction with her performance, attributing her success to her unwavering focus.

She stated, “I had to use my own jersey for this competition, the items for this contest came in a day before, which is very bad. I was given size 40 boots for my weightlifting instead of a thirty-eight”, she said.

“Well, my mind was only set up on making a good performance, which I did and through that, it made me get one gold and two silver. How can I even put it, I was more than excited. I was more than happy. I don’t know the kind of words to use to express this happiness. Winning Ghana’s first gold and silver medals, i was so happy”, she said.

Ntumi, who previously won a medal for Ghana at the 2019 African Games in Morocco, feels there was immense pressure on her to succeed, especially as Ghana had not secured any medals before her events.

“Yes actually there was, since way back in camp, there was a lot of pressure but I just had to calm down and when the games started competing and others had no medals, I was like.. so am I going to be the first Ghanaian to win a medal again in 2024? So I just stayed calm and focused on what I can do best, and God being so great, I was able to deliver for Ghana”, she added.

Ghana currently ranks 10th on the medal table with one gold and three silver medals, with Abeiku Jackson also achieving Ghana’s inaugural swimming medal on Sunday night in the 50m butterfly at the Borteyman Aquatic Center.

As the 2023 African Games progress, there is still much at stake, and Ntumi hopes her fellow athletes will rise to the occasion and contribute to Ghana’s medal haul.

I want to be responsible for the Mortuaries and Funeral Agency (MoFFA) – Deputy Health Minister-designate

The Deputy Health Minister-designate, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has reaffirmed his readiness to oversee the operations of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) pending approval of his nomination.

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointment Committee in Accra, Mr. Acquah expressed his willingness to assume responsibility for managing MoFFA if appointed by the Health Minister.

Responding to a query from the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, regarding his interest in overseeing MoFFA, Mr. Acquah affirmed his commitment to the task.

He emphasized his preparedness to diligently carry out any role assigned to him.

“I will gladly take up that responsibility. Mr Chair, the Ministry is a very vast one, and as I know, it has always had two deputy ministers, so the various agencies are given to the deputy ministers. Of all that my minister will let me handle, I am making a plea that he gives me the opportunity to handle the mortuaries.”

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, established under the Health Institutions and Facilities Act 829 on December 31st, 2011, is tasked with licensing, controlling, and regulating facilities associated with the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.

These include the bodies of deceased individuals or stillborn children, as well as any body parts removed during surgical operations.

Video: Man ‘attacks’ Sarkodie for not giving him money at Telecel launch

In a surprising turn of events at the Telecel launch event today, an elderly man voiced his frustration towards renowned Ghanaian musician Sarkodie, accusing him of failing to engage in the traditional act of spraying cash.

The man, in a viral video, made a stark comparison between Sarkodie and fellow artist Shatta Wale, whom he praised for his generosity in showering money on fans during public appearances.

“Sarkodie didn’t spray any cash! Look at Shatta Wale, he would happily shower us with money,” the man exclaimed, drawing attention from bystanders and causing a momentary pause in the proceedings.

The incident occurred amidst the lively atmosphere of the Telecel launch, where attendees had gathered to witness the unveiling of the telecommunications company’s latest offerings.

On February 28, 2024, Vodafone Ghana underwent a significant transformation, rebranding to Telecel Ghana under the umbrella of Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTCL).

This strategic decision was made possible by the approval granted by the National Communication Authority (NCA), allowing Telecel to acquire Vodafone Ghana and assume a majority shareholder position.

While the Government of Ghana, represented by the State Interests and Governance Authority, retains a minority stake of 30% in Telecel, the transition marks a new chapter for the telecommunications industry in Ghana.

With a strong foothold in the market, Vodafone Ghana, now operating as Telecel Ghana, holds an 18% share of the mobile telephony market. Despite the rebranding, the company’s registered name, Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTCL), remains unchanged, preserving all licenses and regulatory approvals.

Patricia Obo-Nai, the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, assured customers in a communication that the transition to Telecel Ghana heralds a continuation of seamless business operations, robust network connectivity, and elevated service standards.

The enthusiasm expressed by Vodafone Ghana for this transition underscores its commitment to providing exemplary services to its valued customer base amidst the evolving telecommunications landscape in Ghana.

  • Prove I am selling Bawumia’s running mate slot – Wontumi to Manhyia South Constituency Chairman

Prove I am selling Bawumia’s running mate slot – Wontumi to Manhyia South Constituency Chairman

the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued a warning of legal action against a constituency chairman in the Ashanti Region.

Wontumi, has stated that he would resort to the courts if Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, the Manhyia South Constituency Chairman, fails to provide evidence supporting allegations of influence peddling in the selection of the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer’s running mate.

The constituency chairman had accused Wontumi, a close ally of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, of engaging in the unethical practice of “selling the NPP’s presidential running mate slot to the highest bidder.”

In a statement released by an aide, Chairman Wontumi urged the public to dismiss these allegations as baseless propaganda and demanded substantiation within 48 hours, failing which legal action would be pursued.

    Read below the full statement

SUBSTANTIATE YOUR CLAIMS AGAINST CHAIRMAN WONTUMI OR APOLOGISE IN 48 HOURS, OR FACE LEGAL ACTIONS

Our attention has been drawn to a vicious smear campaign against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, about the selection of a running mate to partner with our Flagbearer, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 Presidential Elections.

According to some malicious claims made by the Manhyia South Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, also known as TomTom, which was monitored on Accra-based Okay FM, the Ashanti Regional Chairman has been “trading the presidential running mate slot of the party for his personal gains.”

He repeated these unfounded allegations in a separate interview with Sompa FM, the same day, Monday, 11th March 2024, and went further to subtly accuse the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum and the late Hon. Lawyer Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, of “paying bribes” to Chairman Wontumi for the running mate position.

These unsubstantiated claims are totally unfortunate and reprehensible, particularly when they seek to demean the reputation of, not only Chairman Wontumi, but also that of Dr. Adutwum, and most abhorrently, the reputation of our departed brother, Dr. John Kumah, whose passing is barely a week old.

Well, it is necessary to educate Tomtom and all those who have bought into this vile propaganda that; while Chairman Wontumi, as the Ashanti Regional Chairman and member of the National Council of the party, would undoubtedly have a say in the consultative process leading to the selection of a Running Mate, the ultimate decision lies with the Flagbearer. Every Tom, Dick and Harry in the party know this fact. So it beggars belief TomTom would want to push this derisive narrative regarding astute senior members of our party and in government “paying” monies to Chairman Wontumi for the Running Mate position.

It is however not surprising that TomTom would seize the moment to defame the reputation of these personalities, as it has been his methods and modus operandi these past two months or more, particularly when he perceives one does not sympathise with his “interest”.

Indeed, TomTom, in recent months, has conducted himself in such a brutally cynical manner, demonstrating his utter disregard for authority and high offices in the party, which even the National Organiser was not spared. The fabricated claims of disrespect for the Asantehene he (TomTom) made against Chairman Wontumi is still fresh in our minds.

Ordinarily, these unfounded claims would not have been glorified with a response as Chairman Wontumi is usually unfazed by such acts, especially when he is currently distraught and devastated by the untimely demise of his faithful brother and loyal friend, Dr. John Kumah.

However, the timing of these insensitive pronouncements of TomTom clearly shows that, the orchestrated and coordinated attempt to undermine the leadership of the Regional Chairman since the latter’s reelection about two (2) years ago has reached such crescendo where all persons, dead or alive, affiliated to him, are not spared.

It is therefore worthy to note that, the continued nonchalant shrug of Chairman Wontumi towards this conduct of TomTom, in the interest of the Party’s cohesion and unity, could rather become a harbinger for more of such acts, which would go a long way to harm the very cohesion and unity we seek to preserve ahead of the 2024 Presidential Elections. Although there is no blazing fury among the party people, there is a simmering discontent with the behaviour of Tomtom, which if not quickly dealt with, would spark reactions and counter-accusations in the region.

While the public is urged to dismiss and disregard these unfounded claims as they are bereft of, and lack, substance, Mr. Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori-Atta is given Forty Eight(48) hours to either substantiate these allegations or render an unqualified apology to Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako and the Party in the Ashanti Region. There would be no other option than to take legal action against him should he fail to do so.

    Signed,
    Nana Poku Frefre
    (Political Assistant, Chairman Wontumi)

  • You cannot be let off the hook for Ghana’s economic crisis – Bunkpurugu MP to Bawumia

You cannot be let off the hook for Ghana’s economic crisis – Bunkpurugu MP to Bawumia

Dr. Abed Lamangin Bandim, representing Bunkpurugu in Parliament, has asserted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot evade responsibility for the nation’s economic challenges.

In an interview with Pan African TV on March 12, 2024, Dr. Bandim criticized President Akufo-Addo’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), dismissing it as mere propaganda.

He highlighted the substantial funds left by the previous administration under John Mahama and criticized the current government’s borrowing practices.

Dr. Bandim pointed out that despite these financial resources and additional COVID-19 funds and tax increments, unemployment remains high.

He juxtaposed Akufo-Addo’s current remarks with his 2018 SONA, where he lauded Dr. Bawumia’s role in economic successes, highlighting an apparent contradiction.

Reminding Ghanaians of unfulfilled promises by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to transition from taxation to production, Dr. Bandim cited stagnant economic growth and increasing inflation rates.

He emphasized the necessity of recognizing the groundwork laid by previous administrations, particularly under Mahama’s leadership.

Dr. Bandim underscored initiatives like telecommunications development, Mobile Money introduction, and fibre optic infrastructure as crucial elements of Ghana’s digital advancement during Mahama’s tenure.

He criticized the current administration for overlooking past contributions and failing to adequately address economic challenges.

Calling for a more honest assessment of the economic situation, Dr. Bandim urged concerted efforts to build upon existing foundations for sustainable development.

“There were three funds that John Mahama left with so much money in there.

“The Stabilization Fund had accrued about $300 million. Then you take the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund which had accrued about $250 million, and then you take the Sinking Fund which also had about $500 million. All of this put together with the monies that Akufo-Addo and Bawumia came to borrow”.

Dr Bandim added that “In addition, if you add the COVID-19 funds to it and the taxes that they have raised, we are still where we are with so much unemployment.”

  • My appointment represents a crucial step towards revolutionizing agric sector – Bryan Acheampong

My appointment represents a crucial step towards revolutionizing agric sector – Bryan Acheampong

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has reflected on his appointment as opportune, arriving at a crucial juncture for Ghana’s agricultural sector.

He perceives his role akin to that of Joseph from biblical lore, who revitalized Egypt and provided relief to the Israelites.

During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Mr Acheampong emphasized that despite concerns about the limited time remaining for the government to enact change, the focus should be on maximizing the potential of the time ahead.

He drew parallels to Joseph’s swift actions that brought about significant transformation.

Mr Acheampong underscored his commitment to President’s vision of making Ghana self-sufficient in food production over the next five years.

He highlighted the president’s directive to prioritize agriculture as a fundamental solution to the country’s food challenges, particularly addressing issues such as fluctuating food prices and heavy reliance on imports.

Furthermore, Mr Acheampong noted the president’s active involvement and support in his efforts, citing instances where the president participated in stakeholder engagements and the launch of initiatives like the Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II.

This collaboration underscores a clear mandate from the president to tackle agricultural issues head-on.

“Joseph came in within a short time and brought change and so it is not about the time left, it is about what you do with the time left,” he told Bernard Avle.

“The president was clear that we needed to push and wanted to see agric as a pillar to solve the food situation in the country and so there was a need for us to fix the different food prices and the amount of money spent on importing food into the country.

“This [my appointment] was a clear assignment that he gave me and said he would be involved in, and that is why when I was doing the stakeholder engagements, the president was there and when I launched the Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II, the president was there.”

Aynok Holdings’ contract with govt symbolizes a collapsed State – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has criticized the government’s decision to contract a private company for the reclamation of encroached state lands.

In a parliamentary session, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, revealed that the government had amended its agreement with Aynok Holdings Limited, allowing the company to receive 15 percent of the reclaimed land as compensation.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the arrangement, Ablakwa expressed concern over the apparent inability of state security to safeguard and reclaim government properties, suggesting it reflects a dysfunctional state.

“Have we become such a failed state that with the entire national security apparatus, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Defence, National Security, Police, and all of that—we can’t protect state lands, and we now have to engage a private entity to be protecting lands for us. I mean, then we should close down state institutions. I really can’t believe this. There is even no value for money.”

Doctors at KATH to lay down their tools today over accommodation issues

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are poised to initiate an indefinite strike commencing today, Wednesday, March 13, due to housing concerns.

According to the leadership of the Association, members are facing eviction from their bungalows, which have purportedly been sold off.

The Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, expressed disappointment at the abrupt displacement of hospital staff from their residences in an interview with Citi News.

He highlighted a prior agreement with Manhyia Palace for new accommodations before the land was transferred.

However, this agreement has allegedly been ignored.”You will notice that a lot of our staff live 15 to 20 minutes away from the hospital and all of a sudden, people will come and ask you to move from your place because it has been sold to them and we took that issue up and we met with Manhyia on it, and it was agreed that a new place be prepared to move us there before you can take possession of the land. They have disregarded that with impunity and so we are meeting this morning.”

“We will all leave the hospital to go and look for accommodation because we don’t have a place to sleep.”Despite the Ashanti Regional Minister’s announcement of plans to relocate all government workers residing within a state lands enclave around Danyame and Nhyiaeso, the doctors insist they will proceed with the strike until an immediate solution is implemented.

Chinese convict escaping from our custody doesn’t reflect our standards – Prisons Service

The Ghana Prisons Service has stressed that the behavior of two officers involved in assisting the escape of Chinese convict Wang Xiao from Nsawam Medium Prison falls short of the service’s standards.

It asserts that its officers undergo comprehensive training and adhere strictly to a professional code of conduct.

Joseph Oteng and Sergeant Isaac Boateng Bonsu, the two prison officers implicated, face charges of conspiracy and aiding escape.

They appeared before an Accra Circuit Court to answer these charges. Initially, they claimed that a Toyota Vitz car approached them after a hospital visit, taking the convict away.

However, CCTV footage contradicted their account, showing them escorting the convict to a hotel room to meet his wife, who they allegedly escaped with via the balcony while the officers waited in the hotel reception.

Although the officers have pleaded not guilty, they were granted bail by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah, who presided over the court.

Each officer was required to provide GH¢100,000 in bail money along with two justifiable sureties. Their next court appearance is scheduled for April 9, 2024.

Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, leading the prosecution, revealed that the complainant held the position of third in command at Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, and the accused officers served under his supervision.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, the Chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Prisons Service, Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, described the incident as regrettable.

He reiterated the service’s disapproval of such conduct and emphasized the importance of professionalism among officers.

Mr Adamu affirmed the service’s commitment to ongoing education and sensitization to reinforce professionalism in the line of duty.

We can’t give a timetable because what you’re experiencing is not dumsor – ECG over recent power outages

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has stated that despite recent power disruptions, there is no need for implementing a load-shedding timetable.

Laila Abubakar, the External Communications Manager at ECG, clarified that the current power supply challenges in the country do not warrant the introduction of a load-shedding schedule.

Abubakar emphasized that various factors may contribute to the recent power outages, but the traditional ‘dumsor’ phenomenon has not returned.

“The thing is, we just want people to be aware that when your power goes off, it is not always a matter of load shedding. There are several issues and there are some of them that fall before the doorsteps of ECG. We are doing as much as possible to solve the ones that we can.

“There aren’t any issues with shedding load. The load shed, I think is what people understand by ‘Dumsor’. But usually, when someone asks me if, there is Dumsor, I ask them what do you understand and what do you think ‘Dumsor’ means. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t be a timetable.”

Wontumi selling Bawumia’s running mate position – Manhyia South chairman

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, faces accusations of allegedly exploiting the party’s presidential running mate position for personal gain.

The Manhyia South Constituency Chairman of the NPP, Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, also known as Tom Tom, raised concerns about this perceived harmful trend, warning of potential consequences for the party’s unity in the Ashanti Region.

In interviews with Kumasi-based Sompa FM and Accra-based Okay FM on Monday, March 11, 2024, Tom Tom urged the party’s national executives to intervene and rein in Chairman Wontumi.

Tom Tom claimed that Wontumi, knowing that the running mate would likely be chosen from the Ashanti Region, had allegedly devised a scheme to exploit the situation for personal gain.

“He [Wontumi] is allegedly engaging in the trading of the running mate slot. Initially, he attempted to secure it for Education Minister Dr. Adutwum, and when that failed, he turned to Dr. John Kumah until his unfortunate demise,” Tom Tom asserted.

Furthermore, Tom Tom alleged that following Dr. Kumah’s death, Chairman Wontumi was allegedly tarnishing the reputation of potential running mates he opposed, with the assistance of his associates, particularly a presenter on Wontumi media named Oheneba Nana Asiedu.

Tom Tom emphasized that recent developments on Wontumi FM/radio seemed to corroborate this narrative, indicating a concerted effort by the Ashanti Regional Chairman.

He urged the party’s leadership to urgently intervene and restrain Chairman Wontumi, highlighting the importance of preserving unity within the region.

“He [ Wontumi] is trading the running mate slot. First, he did it with Education Minister, Dr Adutwum and when it failed, he shifted to Dr John Kumah until his untimely death, “ Tom Tom stated.

“He is doing this using his aides led by a presenter of Wontumi media, Oheneba Nana Asiedu,” he stressed.

“Already, divisions are being created in the region and this must be arrested as early as possible because we cannot toy with our stronghold, “ he said.

You will invade voters’ privacy if you deploy drones to monitor 2024 elections – EC to NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has rebuked the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) proposal to utilize drones in the Greater Accra region during the 2024 elections.

The NDC’s plan entails deploying drones to oversee the election proceedings in the region, but the EC views this initiative as a potential violation of voters’ electoral privacy and security measures.

The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, remarked that the commission has not received formal communication from the NDC regarding their intention to employ drones.

Dr. Quaicoe emphasized that permitting such actions would contravene security protocols and jeopardize the confidentiality of voters.

“Polling stations are security zones, so they will have to apply to the security people for permission to be granted. They will have to apply to the Electoral Commission for permission to be granted.

“But my point is that how comfortable will you feel that you are going to vote at the polling station and there’s a drone hovering around you?

“How sure are you with respect to the secrecy of the ballot, so they have to apply,” he said in an interview with Joy News on March 12, 2024.

“The fact remains that polling stations are security zones. We want to ensure the secrecy of the ballot. So, at the polling station where I am going to make my choice, I want to vote in that secrecy,” he added.

The EC’s stance was prompted by remarks made by Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, who clarified that the use of drones is part of the party’s strategy to secure two million votes in the forthcoming elections.

Mr Moore underscored the objective of enhancing the NDC’s monitoring capabilities to prevent potential electoral irregularities.

Furthermore, Moore disclosed ongoing preparations to train constituency executives on operating the drones effectively to monitor ground activities.

I have never received any form of financial support from John Kumah – Nigel Gaisie replies widow

The founder and leader of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has refuted allegations of ever being financially supported by the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah.

The accusations surfaced from Prophetess Lilian Kumah, the widow of the deceased politician, who claimed in an interview on Asaase Radio that prophet Gaisie utilized information from her husband’s family for his prophecies, suggesting a close relationship between Mr Gaisie and her late husband.

She also implied that Mr Gaisie had been on her husband’s payroll at some point, although she did not specify in what capacity.

However, Mr Gaisie vehemently denied these claims, asserting that he had never been financially supported by John Kumah since their initial encounter in 2015.

“In her audio, she said I was on John Kumah’s payroll but when they were coming to my church, they didn’t even have money…

“You are a pastor and someone that God has used me to bless before, because of political interest you are able to tell me my wife has left home …before then, she said I was on John Kumah’s payroll, I have never been on John Kumah’s payroll,” Nigel said in an interview on Onua FM on March 12, 2024.

“2016, were they having money all the times I was preaching for her before building a new palace where they have money to put me on payroll, and can she pay me? At that time God raised me, can she put me on the payroll?” he added.

Additionally, Gaisie highlighted that the Kumah family was not financially stable during their early interactions.

He questioned whether they had the financial means to support him, particularly during their initial encounters before they gained financial stability.

The late Deputy Minister and New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Ejisu in the Ashanti region, John Kumah, passed away on March 7, 2024, at the Suhum Government Hospital.

Mahama comes no where close to Bawumia – Majority leader

In a recent parliamentary session, Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, does not measure up to the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During the session, Afenyo-Markin compared the records of John Mahama as Vice President and President to that of Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing the significant disparities between the two.

He expressed his opinion that Mahama cannot rival Dr. Bawumia’s achievements.

In his address to the speaker and fellow parliamentarians, Afenyo-Markin criticized the opposition, stating, “These are the same people who could not lead this country to the promised land, who could not lay the foundation for economic growth.”

He highlighted his skepticism about the opposition’s ability to bring about positive change, asserting that they lack the capability to make a substantial impact.

“But today the liberties of opposition is making them believe that they can do something. You can do nothing. You cannot do it. You have been given the opportunity for 8 years,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin further addressed the return of John Mahama and cited the appointment of Naana Opoku-Agyemang, particularly noting her record in the Education Ministry.

“You’re bringing back the same old John Mahama, you’re bringing back the old Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s record in the Education ministry. Can she confirm her records to the records of Dr Bawumia,” he added.

He questioned her ability to compare her accomplishments to those of Dr. Bawumia and challenged the opposition to present evidence of their achievements.

In his concluding remarks, Afenyo-Markin confidently asserted, “Mr. Speaker, can your Naana Opoku Agyemang compare her records to Dr. Bawumia? Can your own John Mahama compare his records as president and vice-president to the records of Dr. Bawumia? No, he cannot.”

Some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), including constituency executives in the northern region have called on the Ghana Police Service to launch an investigation into the death of the deputy finance minister, John Kumah.

Speaking to the media, Tamale South Constituency Deputy Secretary, Mahama A. Asanatu, emphasized the need for clarity in the wake of concerning and unfounded statements surrounding the death of the deceased.

Addressing the media during a news conference held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, Madam Asanatu called on those making these allegations to substantiate their claims.

In particular, Asanatu urged individuals spreading what she termed as “bizarre and unfounded statements” about the alleged poisoning of John Kumah to provide vivid and empirical evidence.

She emphasized the importance of presenting such evidence to the Ghana Police Service, urging authorities to conduct thorough and proper investigations to either confirm or dismiss the veracity of these claims.

The Deputy Secretary highlighted the shock and sorrow within the party following the unexpected death of John Kumah, describing him as a beloved figure among party members in the Northern Region.

“For purposes of clarity, we want to use this medium to call on the individuals making these rather bizarre and unfounded statements to vivid and empirical evidence to the Ghana Police Service to conduct thorough and proper investigations to establish or otherwise, the veracity of such claims”she added.

Madam Asanatu acknowledged the impact of Kumah’s support, especially for the youth, and noted that his passing has left many party faithful struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Addressing the purported food poisoning allegations, she referred to videos circulating on social media suggesting that John Kumah and Chairman Wontumi were given poisoned food during a campaign visit to the Northern Region last year.

Madam Asanatu expressed the group’s astonishment at these claims and urged those responsible for the allegations to provide concrete evidence to support their narrative.

Furthermore, she called on the Ashanti regional chairman, Bernard Bosiako Antwi, (Chairman Wontumi), mentioned as one of the individuals allegedly affected by the poisoned food, to make a public statement on the matter.

She stressed the significance of Wontumi’s role as a party leader and elder, noting that the public deserves clarity on these disturbing developments, especially considering the involvement of media personnel from the Ashanti region in spreading the claims.

  • You’re a liar, no one poisoned John Kumah – Okatakyie Afrifa tells Captain Smart

You’re a liar, no one poisoned John Kumah – Okatakyie Afrifa tells Captain Smart

Media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has characterized the recent claims by Onua TV presenter, Captain Smart, regarding what caused the untimely death of the deputy finance minister, John Kumah as false.

Speaking on Angel TV he indicated that Captain Smart’s assertions should not be encouraged as his statements lack evidence.

“Captain Smart you’re mad, you have a mental problem because you saw someone putting poison in someone’s food and couldn’t stop or alert anyone. You’re a liar. Your claims of someone poisoning John Kumah and Wontumi are false,” he added.

He expressed shock as to why a rational human being as Captain Smart would sit unconcerned when he saw someone poisoning food that was to be consumed by an individual.

Captain Smart had alleged that the deceased died from food poisoning, linking it to an event he attended with the Ashanti regional chairman for New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bernard Bosiako Antwi (Chairman Wontumi).

According to him, he was intentionally poisoned because of his political ambitions, stating that he represented a threat to certain party leaders.

“He has been poisoned 3 times, ask Osei-Kyei-Mensah if I am telling lies. His wife is a nurse. So now when he is travelling his wife carries along and accompanies him. Osei Kyei Mensah has been poisoned 3 times, some people have marked him for death. I know what I am saying. When you meet Kyei Mensah Bonsu tell him I am the one who is making the claim.

“When they failed to kill Osei Kyei Mensah through poison, those evil individuals channelled their attention to Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi and poisoned him. After they had succeeded they went after John Kumah,” he added.

The late minister passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

According to reports, he collapsed in his office and was swiftly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Subsequently, due to a decline in his condition, he was flown out of the country.

The Member of Parliament for Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Kumah, was known for his diverse roles as a Lawyer, Entrepreneur, and dedicated Politician.

He is survived by Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, and six children.

Blown fuses in transformers might cause peak period blackouts – ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed the intermittent power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ occurring between 7 p.m and 11 p.m., to blown fuses in transformers.

According to a statement released by ECG, 630 distribution transformers in various communities across their operational areas have been identified as operating at full capacity due to heightened demand.

The statement explains, “This situation may result in blown fuses and broken conductors causing outages, especially during the peak load period (7 p.m.–11 p.m.) in the affected areas.

“However, we wish to assure our customers that transformer upgrading and new projects are ongoing to relieve these transformers to ensure a more reliable power supply.

Customers residing in the listed communities/localities are urged to promptly report any localized outages or voltage fluctuations to the ECG call center at 0302-611611 (also available on WhatsApp).

“Customers within the underlisted communities/localities are therefore advised to report any localised outage or voltage fluctuations to the ECG call center on 0302-611611 (also available on WhatsApp) or reach us on our social media handles via ECGghOfficial (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for prompt rectification,” it added.

John Kumah loved the things of God – Wife

Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah has commended her late husband, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, for his fervor in matters of faith, a quality she believes will continue to serve as a source of inspiration and solace for the family.

The widow of the late Deputy Finance Minister expressed these sentiments after Dr. Kumah’s passing last Thursday.

Survived by a wife and six children, the 45-year-old Deputy Finance Minister had a profound impact on the church, even in his final days.

“Among all the things, he left us with God. One thing that he loved doing was about the work of God. Even in his last days, he changed a lot in the church, which cost him a lot, but he insisted that he wants the best for God,” she said.

Reflecting on the family’s coping mechanisms, Mrs. Kumah stated, “It’s not easy for both his mother and father because it’s that baobab tree that we all enjoyed some fresh air under that’s been uprooted,” adding, “his motive was to train me as a strong woman, and he’s accomplished that.”

Addressing concerns about speculation regarding the cause of her husband’s death, Mrs. Kumah urged authorities, including President Akufo-Addo, to investigate the matter.

She revealed that Dr. Kumah had been diagnosed with a blood-related disease in August 2023 during a medical check-up in Germany.

Despite arrangements to transport him to Accra for further medical attention and an onward planned trip to Germany, he passed away at the Suhum Government Hospital in the Eastern Region.

A private legal practitioner and entrepreneur, Dr. Kumah, served as the Managing Partner of Aduaprokye Chambers, a law firm, and was the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP).

Under his leadership at NEIP, approximately 7,000 start-ups received training in 2018 through the Presidential Business Support program, with about 1,350 beneficiaries obtaining funding support.

He held a Doctorate in Business Innovation from the Swiss Business School, Switzerland, and an Executive Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Dr. Kumah also earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics with Philosophy and Law from the University of Ghana, following his professional Law Certificate from the Ghana School of Law in 2013. He was called to the Ghana Bar in 2013.

  • Using State’s funds for construction of National Cathedral is not a big deal – Charles Bissue

Using State’s funds for construction of National Cathedral is not a big deal – Charles Bissue

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in the Essikado-Ketan constituency, Charles Bissue, has justified the utilization of state funds for the construction of the National Cathedral.

Contrary to initial plans involving President Akufo-Addo providing seed money, land, and seeking foreign funds, Bissue asserted that the state’s contribution was deemed necessary due to potential economic benefits.

Mr Bissue clarified that the government’s financial commitment was not intended to cover the entire cost of the cathedral but rather to offer support.

He highlighted the delayed implementation of the project, explaining that it was essential to comprehend the president’s commitment to leaving a monumental legacy with seed money, provided land, and foreign fundraising.

In defending the government’s involvement, Mr Bissue emphasized the overall positive impact the cathedral would have, such as boosting tourism, and expressed no issue with the state providing partial support.

“To some extent, you can say that the Cathedral is not needed now and that is why it has been delayed and there are reasons behind it.

“First of all, we need to understand what the president said; I believe that he said he was going to leave a monumental legacy and he said he was going to put in seed money and that land will be provided and also we are going to solicit for funds from abroad.

“If such a huge project is coming into the country and eventually it’s going to benefit all of us; boost tourism amongst others, then we will all go for it. So, if the government comes in to support, not the entire project, I don’t see any problem with that,” he added.

Meanwhile, the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been actively seeking accountability for the use of public resources in the cathedral project.

Through social media publications, he has raised concerns about corporate governance breaches, financial impropriety, and identity fraud involving the secretary of the project’s Board of Trustees.

  • Journalists have now turned into pathologists and prophets – Sefa Kayi over John Kumah’s poisoned claims

Journalists have now turned into pathologists and prophets – Sefa Kayi over John Kumah’s poisoned claims

Renowned broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi, host of the popular morning show “Kokrokoo” on Peace FM in Ghana, has advised journalists against spreading unfounded speculations regarding the death of Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah.

John Kumah passed away last Thursday on his way to the hospital, leaving behind a wife and six children.

In the wake of his death, there have been various rumors circulating about the cause.

Some reports, notably from Onua TV’s morning show Presenter Captain Smart, suggest that the late Deputy Minister succumbed to food poisoning, allegedly as part of a plot to prevent his ascent within the New Patriotic Party.

Without singling out anyone, Kwami Sefa Kayi criticized the journalistic practice of making claims without evidence, especially concerning sensitive matters like someone’s death.

He questioned whether those asserting food poisoning had considered the potential harm their comments might inflict on the grieving family, particularly the widow and her children.

Sefa Kayi expressed concern over the erosion of ethical standards among journalists, noting the tendency for some to act as both pathologists and prophets in discussing the causes of a person’s death.

He emphasized the need for evidence before making such serious allegations.

In response to the situation, the widow of John Kumah has taken legal action against Captain Smart, demanding substantiation of his claims in court.

She expressed frustration and sadness over the false claims, urging authorities to hold Captain Smart accountable for spreading misinformation.

“If it is true that a person who is not dead but alive claims that he knows how my husband (John Kumah) died and that he was poisoned, and that person is still moving around for the past three weeks, it hurts me, it saddens me and I do not know how best to express my frustrations about these false claims by Captain Smart”, the widow lamented in an interview on Asaase radio.

She added; “If there are laws in this country concerning such false claims, I think this is the time for the leadership of the land to bring that wicked person (Captain Smart) to book to prove his false claims and to point out the persons who were involved in the poisoning of my late husband.”

“This is why I am saying the National Media Commission, GJA, Media Foundation for West Africa, as for this, I plead with you to say something because we are the journalists doing the work and we should be able to look at ourselves and say these are low, low dirty standards.”

On his show, Sefa Kayi called upon the National Media Commission, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the Media Foundation for West Africa to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high journalistic standards.

“Journalists have now turned into pathologists and Prophets…We’ve lost ethics as human beings. Someone is dead and in no time, people are on radio and TV discussing the cause of his death. His wife has filed a complaint. If right now, you who claim to know he was poisoned is asked to provide evidence, where are you going to get the evidence?”, Mr. Sefa Kayi admonished.

“Why is it that someone (referring to Captain Smart) has been this bold to claim that he knows for a fact that a person like John Kumah who has served his country virtually all his life, was poisoned, while he was working for his country and party (New Patriotic Party, NPP), why should we sit down and not bring that person to book.

Your comments against Naana Jane was rude – COPEC’s Research Head to Afenyo-Markin

The Head of Research at the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Paul Eric Ofori, has characterized Majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s remarks against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as regrettable and short-sighted.

The Majority Leader, speaking in Parliament on Monday, March 11, criticized the NDC’s choice of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a woman in her 70s, as running mate, suggesting a lack of succession plan and visionary leadership within the NDC. This sparked anger among the Minority Caucus, leading Afenyo-Markin to retract his comments.

Appearing on the Breakfast Daily program on Citi TV, Eric Opoku argued that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s extensive experience, including serving as vice chancellor of a university and as the Education Minister, speaks for itself.

He deemed Afenyo-Markin’s comments unnecessary and urged a focus on what the running mate can bring to the table.

“I was hoping that we would look at what she can do rather than her age. If we consider that part, then it will mean that we are not giving a voice to the women who want to come into politics. For a no less a person than the Majority Leader in Parliament to make such a statement is most unfortunate and myopic on his part to attempt to think that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang comes in with nothing,” he added.

Ofori expressed disappointment in the Majority Leader’s statement, considering it unfortunate and myopic to undermine the selection choice made by John Dramani Mahama.

He emphasized the need to evaluate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s capabilities rather than fixating on her age, asserting that such statements discourage women from entering politics.

“Prior to even being the running mate, she had been the vice chancellor for a whole university, then also became the Education Minister so in terms of experience, she comes in with a lot of experience and I do not think that it is in the place of Alexander Afenyo-Markin to sort of denigrate the image of the selection choice of John Dramani Mahama.

“I was hoping that we would look at what she can do rather than her age. If we consider that part, then it will mean that we are not giving a voice to the women who want to come into politics. For a no less a person than the Majority Leader in Parliament to make such a statement is most unfortunate and myopic on his part to attempt to think that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang comes in with nothing.”

Saglemi housing project to be completed by private investors – Housing Deputy Minister Designate

The Deputy Minister Designate for Works and Housing, Dr. Prince Hamidu Armah, has announced the consideration of private investors in the Saglemi Housing Project.

Recognizing the imperative of completing the project after significant state investments, Dr. Armah underscores the potential involvement of private sector entities as a viable avenue towards achieving the original objectives of the Saglemi Housing Project.

Dr. Prince Hamidu Armah, has also urged the government to prioritize the conclusion of the Saglemi housing project.

He stressed the importance of finalizing the project, emphasizing that significant state funds have already been invested in its construction.

The Saglemi Housing Project, which commenced in 2016, faced delays following government concerns about its alignment with the best interests of Ghanaians.

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Dr. Hamidu Armah mentioned that the government has instituted a technical committee to expedite actions aimed at completing the housing project.

“The state has already invested so much money into Saglemi, and I think that it is important that we bring the original intent of the project to fruition. I understand that the ministry has already constituted a technical working committee to look at private sector participation in offloading the project and to ensure that the project is completed for it to be used.”

Reformation of homosexuals must be a priority to parliament – Ekow Assafuah

The Deputy Minister-designate for the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Ekow Assafuah, has called on Parliament to focus on the rehabilitation of homosexuals rather than solely resorting to punitive measures.

He emphasized that Parliament bears the responsibility of ensuring the reformation and seamless integration of individuals with different sexual orientations back into society.

Expressing his support for the anti-LGBTQ+ bill during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee in Accra on March 11, 2024, Mr. Assafuah underscored his backing for the legislation, aligning it with his Catholic beliefs and cultural background.

“In principle, the LGBTQ bill that has been passed or approved by Parliament is one that I support wholeheartedly because it is in consonance with my tradition and culture. It is in consonance with my formation as a catholic person or practising catholic,” he stated.

While he endorsed the bill, which criminalizes and prohibits LGBTQ activities, he cautioned against merely isolating individuals with different sexual orientations, emphasizing the need for a more holistic approach to address the issue.

The controversial bill, unanimously passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes and prohibits the promotion, advocacy, and funding of LGBTQ activities in the country.

Mr. Assafuah, however, expressed reservations about the punitive measures outlined in the bill, advocating for a focus on reformative approaches to address the underlying issues.

He stressed the importance of punishment being aligned with principles of reformation, urging Parliament to prioritize the responsibility of reforming individuals and reintegrating them into society.

Mr. Assafuah rejected the notion of society giving in to despair and suggested that proper forums and engagements should be established to devise effective strategies for dealing with individuals with different sexual orientations, emphasizing Parliament’s role in fulfilling this responsibility.

“There are reasons for punishment to be meted out to people. There is a principle behind punishment and one of the principles is to ensure that a person is being reformed out of a criminal activity. And so, if we have to reform persons, do we have to mete out punishment that seems to ostracise the person from society? It seems that as a society, we are bringing out our failures in the sense that we are showing our inability or incapacity to be able to reform people or if you like put people through sessions that reintroduce such persons into society. If we are not able to do so. That is where I see the failure,” he explained.

“It seems we are throwing our hands in despair. I am making a strong point that as a Parliament, we should be very interested in reforming our people. That is our responsibility as a people. We cannot say that there is a supposed anticipation of gay persons being lynched if they are given community service and so because of that as the people’s representatives we are throwing our hands in despair to allow such persons just to go astray.

“That cannot be our course. Let’s have a proper forum, let’s have proper engagements to see how best we can deal with such persons. It is our responsibility to do so,” Mr Assafuah stated.

15-year-old boy dies in Dwahyen River

On Saturday, March 9, 2024, a 15-year-old Junior High School (JHS) three pupil from Blessing Academy in Afasebong, Atwima Kwanwoma district, tragically drowned in the Dwahyen River at Takyiman New Site.

The Head Teacher of Blessing Academy, Emmanuel Amankwah, withheld the pupil’s name for unspecified reasons.

According to Amankwah, the pupil sought permission from school authorities to purchase food outside the premises on that Saturday afternoon.

However, upon reaching the bridge spanning the Dwahyen River, the pupil encountered friends engaged in swimming.

Enticed to join them, tragedy unfolded as the pupil drowned, and attempts by his friends to rescue him proved futile, as they also faced difficulties in the water.

Despite their distress, the friends raised an alarm. Masons working nearby rushed to the scene but found the boy had already been swept away by the river.

Efforts by good Samaritans in the evening to retrieve the body proved unsuccessful.

Nana Afriyie Takyi, Nifahene of Atwima, performed a libation ceremony at the river to facilitate the retrieval of the body to the riverbank, a sentiment also confirmed by the Denkyemuoso Police Command during their early Sunday visit.

The lifeless body was later discovered on the riverbank and subsequently transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for a post-mortem examination.

In response to the tragedy, Atwimahene, Nana Antwi Agyei Brempong II, urged parents to ensure their children avoid aimless loitering. He also called on private schools with boarding facilities to prioritize the well-being and safety of the children under their care.

  • Ghana saves US$34m monthly due to renegotiation of ‘expensive’ IPP deals – Finance Ministry

Ghana saves US$34m monthly due to renegotiation of ‘expensive’ IPP deals – Finance Ministry

Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, has highlighted that the government under President Akufo-Addo has achieved substantial savings through the renegotiation of agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

She characterized the agreements from the previous Mahama administration as costly and in need of renegotiation.

During the State of the Nation Address on February 27, President Akufo-Addo announced that the government’s negotiating team had successfully reached commercial agreements on headline terms for restructuring power purchase agreements and settling arrears with affected IPPs, including AKSA, Amandi, Cenpower, CENIT, and Early Power.

President Akufo-Addo revealed that the negotiations uncovered that the reported debt of US$1.6 billion owed to the IPPs was actually US$1.2 billion, resulting in savings of US$400 million.

Additionally, a fixed monthly energy purchase price was secured with all IPPs, leading to a monthly payment of US$43 million instead of US$77 million, resulting in monthly savings of US$34 million and a significant reduction in payments compared to the inherited ‘Take-or-Pay’ system.

“In the meantime, ECG has been able to secure a fixed monthly energy purchase price with all the IPPs.

“This has led to a monthly payment of US$43 million, instead of US$77m, that is monthly savings of US$34 m 44 reduction in monthly payments, a far better outcome than the ‘Take-or-Pay’ system we inherited,” the President said.

“When the president came to parliament with the SONA, he mentioned that we have been able to renegotiate some of these expensive IPPs that the previous government entered into. we have done some renegotiations and that has resulted in 44 percent.

“If you look at the quantum of the 44 percent I don’t think you will be asking whether it is satisfactory enough, we have saved enough money.”

In an interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu on March 11, Madam Osei Asare emphasized the success of the renegotiations, stating, “If you look at the quantum of the 44 percent, I don’t think you will be asking whether it is satisfactory enough; we have saved enough money.”

  • We have been forced to reduce water production in Central Region due to galamsey activities – GWCL

We have been forced to reduce water production in Central Region due to galamsey activities – GWCL

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced a 30% reduction in water production in the Central region, leading to a severe water shortage.

The Regional Chief Manager, Seth Eric Atiapah, attributed this reduction to the extensive pollution of water resulting from illegal mining activities.

A visit by JoyNews to the Sekyere-Hemang plant exposed the detrimental effects of galamsey activities, including the narrowing of the intake canal, water turbidity, and clogging of the plant’s sump.

These issues have significantly impeded the flow of water to the plant.

Addressing the acute water shortage during a dredging exercise at the plant intake, Atiapah highlighted the escalating cost of production due to increased water contamination.

The turbidity level rose from the designed 500MNU to an alarming 7500, making the water challenging to treat.

The necessity of employing more potent and expensive chemicals, such as polymer or poly-electrolyte, has added to the financial burden.

To manage the situation, GWCL has reduced water production by 30%, allowing more time to treat the compromised water quality. Atiapah emphasized the critical need for curtailing galamsey activities to address the root cause of the problem.

Stanley Martey, the Company’s Head of Communications, reiterated the urgency of combating illegal mining, as the treatment plants rely on rivers that have been polluted by galamsey activities.

The conventional treatment plant is designed for water from river sources, and the current situation necessitates a collective effort to curb illegal mining and preserve water sources.
