My husband’s death must be investigated else none of my children will serve Ghana – John Kumah’s wife

Apostle Lilian Kumah, the widow of the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, has declared that none of her children will serve Ghana if the controversies surrounding her husband’s death are scrutinized.

Mrs. Kumah strongly asserted that her husband, the Ejisu Member of Parliament (MP), succumbed to a terminal illness diagnosed by his doctors in Germany nearly a year ago, refuting speculations of food poisoning.

Despite her initial stance, she deems it necessary for the allegations to undergo investigation to bring closure to the matter, especially in light of the widespread claims made by broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart.

Expressing her disappointment, she questioned the credibility of someone making speculative claims under the guise of journalism, particularly when her husband had dedicated his life to serving the nation. In an interview with Accra-based Asaase radio, she stated, “No child of my womb will serve the country because it is very disappointing.”

Mrs. Kumah urged Captain Smart to substantiate his allegations with evidence for the sake of justice, appealing to the president to intervene.

She requested Captain Smart’s assistance in identifying those responsible for her husband’s death so that they could be apprehended and held accountable under the law.

“No child of my womb will serve the country because it is very disappointing. How can a guy who has dedicated his life to serve the nation, then someone in the name of journalism, cheap propaganda is speculating he has facts, why is the person still there?” she said in an interview with Accra-based Asaase radio.

“I am using this media to talk to the president. I beg him. Captain Smart says he knows who killed my husband. So Captain Smart should help us find who killed my husband so the person will be arrested and face the law,” she appealed.

NDC to use drones for December polls surveillance

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has unveiled a strategic initiative to employ drones for monitoring the upcoming December general elections in the region.

The primary objective, as outlined by Ashie Moore, is to safeguard the security of over two million votes for the party and enhance surveillance mechanisms to preempt any potential irregularities.

Viewing this effort as crucial in influencing the election’s outcome, the NDC sets a targeted goal of securing over two million votes in the region.

Ashie Moore revealed that comprehensive plans are already in progress, including the training of personnel designated to operate the drones.

“Next week, we are going to train constituency executives on how to use drones to monitor what happens during the elections,” Ashie Moore told cheering supporters.

While the specific details of the deployment remain undisclosed, Ashie Moore emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to securing all essential resources for a seamless electoral process.

The NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, echoed the call for vigilance during the polls.

“One of the key aspects of this election will be vigilance. We can conduct extensive campaigns, but without vigilance on the day and comprehensive coverage of every polling station with eagle eyes, our objectives may not be achieved. Therefore, especially in Greater Accra, we urge you to have the best party agents covering your polling stations.”

  • Tamale residents to take turns in water supply – GWCL

Tamale residents to take turns in water supply – GWCL

Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has revealed that the northern regional capital, Tamale, is facing a water supply capacity surpassing its limits, necessitating the implementation of a systematic rationing approach to meet the heightened demand.

Dr. Clifford A. Braimah, the Managing Director, attributed this issue to disruptions caused by the construction of urban roads.

During a recent visit to the Northern and Savannah regions, Dr. Braimah underscored the adverse impact of urban road construction on pipelines, exacerbating the challenges in water supply.

He advocated for a re-engineering approach to effectively address these issues.

In response to the situation, GWL is considering the introduction of a demand management program to ensure residents in Tamale have access to water at least once a week.

Dr. Braimah emphasized the necessity of finding solutions to challenges in water supply, including those stemming from the activities of external agencies and power outages from NEDCO.

He called for citizens’ collaboration in identifying individuals with inland pumps in their residences.

He also highlighted the dependency on NEDCO for 100% of production or powering their machines, noting that any power outage from NEDCO affects their systems.

Despite operational challenges, Dr. Braimah acknowledged the need for a systematic rationing process or demand management program to ensure water access for everyone in Tamale at least once a week.

“We are here to look at the challenges that are confronting our people regarding the supply of water and whatever interventions that we can put in immediately to resolve or to minimize those challenges.

“That’s why we are here. We were with us this morning at RCC when we spoke to the Minister about the support we need from the Regional Security Committee, because there are some of the challenges, for example in Tamale, that are a result of activities of agencies and not Ghana Water Company.”

“We depend on NEDCO 100% for production or for us to power their machines. At any time NEDCO power, flat twist, our systems go off. So you could have your systems working properly, because of inadequate power you are unable to deliver.

“However, we have our challenges because Tamale has outgrown the capacity that we now have. So, all we can do is to have a systematic rationing process or demand management programme so that at least everybody in Tamale will have water at least once a week.”

Video: Speaker halts proceedings over Afenyo-Markin’s verbal attack on Prof Opoku-Agyemang

On March 11, the parliamentary debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) came to a standstill for an hour due to escalating tensions sparked by a statement from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Afenyo-Markin’s remarks, wherein he referred to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as an elderly individual who had failed as the Minister of Education, drew strong opposition from the Minority Caucus.

This led to an immediate demand for a retraction and an apology.

In his statement, Afenyo-Markin asserted, “Mr. Speaker, it is the same old NDC. It is the same old John Mahama. Mr. Speaker, perish the thought, should he even get the opportunity, he has only four years constitutionally. Mr. Speaker, there will be no sense of urgency in him because he has nothing to lose.”

“Even if you look at his choice of running mate. He could not get somebody that one could say that they are planning for the future. The person is over 70 years old.

“There is no succession plan. Mr Speaker, from day one, the government will be in crisis. Mr Speaker, they went to pick a very old person who could not perform at the Education Ministry.”

He continued, criticizing the choice of a running mate and highlighting her age, claiming there was no succession plan. The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, responded with a spirited rebuttal.

The exchange escalated, with MPs from the Minority bench loudly demanding a retraction and an apology from Afenyo-Markin, disrupting his ongoing submissions.

The Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, who presided over the session, eventually suspended proceedings for an hour in response to the escalating tension.

  • Your husband and I were not friends – Nigel Gaisie to John Kumah’s wife

Your husband and I were not friends – Nigel Gaisie to John Kumah’s wife

The founder and leader of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has refuted allegations of friendship with the late Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Ampontuah Kumah, during a Facebook live session on March 11, 2024.

Dismissing claims made by the widow of the deceased Deputy Minister for Finance, prophet Gaisie denied having a friendly relationship with John Kumah, asserting that Kumah was a son rather than a friend.

Addressing Lilian, the widow, prophet Gaisie emphasized that he did not maintain friendships due to his busy schedule, clarifying that Kumah was considered a son to him.

“The point is that the late John Kumah was not my friend; he was a son. I don’t have friends; I am too busy I don’t even know how to keep friends. I am always indoors. So the late John Kumah, a very honourable man, he was not my friend.

“So Lilian get it. You and your husband, you were my daughter, I poured oil on you. You have knelt before me and I have all the pictures, I have all the videos and if you dare say it is not true, I will just allow my media team to blow all these things on the internet,” he stated.

He warned Lilian against challenging his statement, citing photographic and video evidence of their interactions, including moments where she and her husband knelt before him.

After John Kumah’s death on March 7, 2024, videos surfaced of a prophecy issued by prophet Gaisie in December 2023, where he predicted a bright future for a deputy minister of finance facing potential attacks.

While not explicitly naming Kumah, prophet Gaisie later claimed that the prophecy referred to him and acknowledged the impending tragedy.

However, Lilian Kumah accused prophet Gaisie of using privileged information obtained as a close friend in his prophecy, branding him a fraud and false prophet.

“I saw a Deputy Minister of Finance, if he can take care of himself, I see him at the highest height of government, but they want to attack him.

“If he can take care of himself, in the next years, God will help him and I saw him at the seat of government, but they have ganged, they have sat down, they want to crash him, a deputy minister of finance,” he stated without mentioning a name.

During the Facebook live session, prophet Gaisie defended the authenticity of his prophecy, recounting the deterioration of his relationship with the Kumahs over a political prophecy.

In the midst of the controversy, autopsy reports revealed multiple myeloma as the cause of the MP’s death at the age of 45.

According to Lilian, her late husband had been diagnosed with this terminal condition, a fact known to Gaisie since August 2023, when he claimed the prophecy originated.

Video: Minority MPs go wild on Afenyo-Markin for mocking Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s age

Parliament witnessed heightened tensions as Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin launched a scathing attack on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, sparking fury from the Minority bench.

During the State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate on March 11, Afenyo-Markin criticized Opoku-Agyemang’s tenure as education minister and raised concerns about her age, pointing out that, at 70 years old, her selection lacked foresight and could potentially lead to a leadership crisis in the absence of a succession plan if the NDC were to win the 2024 elections.

He expressed skepticism about the NDC’s planning for the future, emphasizing that their choice of a running mate over 70 years old lacked strategic foresight and could result in a government crisis. The remarks triggered initial protests from the Deputy Minority Chief Whip.

Afenyo-Markin continued his criticism during a second opportunity to speak, questioning the NDC’s lack of visionary leadership and the selection of Opoku-Agyemang as a running mate, highlighting her retirement from UCC as VC and alleged poor performance at the Ministry of Education.

“It is the same old NDC. It is the same old John Mahama. Mr Speaker, perish the thought, should he even get the opportunity he has only four years constitutionally.

“There would be no sense of urgency in him because he has nothing to lose. Even if you look at his choice of running mate, he could not get somebody that one could say that they are planning for the future.

“The person is over 70 years old, they have no succession plan. From day one, their government will be in crisis. They went to pick the very old person who could not perform at the Education Ministry,” he submitted triggering initial protest from the Deputy Minority Chief Whip.

“The flagbearer, constitutionally has just one term. Should that happen, the flagbearer has chosen a running mate, Mr. Speaker. Under normal circumstances, they should have given us a running mate who can offer a future to Ghana.

“Like we have given a flagbearer who represents the future of Ghana. You have brought a running mate who retired from UCC as VC and came to the Ministry of Education to perform abysmally. The E-blocks she could not complete them. She did only 29. Today, you say the running mate should be the future of this country,” he said.

The comments incited outrage among NDC members, prompting demands for an immediate retraction and apology from Afenyo-Markin. The Minority caucus banged tables in protest, arguing that attacking Opoku-Agyemang’s age was unjustifiable, particularly in light of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s age.

The escalating tension led to the suspension of proceedings for an hour by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako. Outside the chamber, Ketu South MP Dzifa Gomashie condemned Afenyo-Markin’s comments as “despicable,” highlighting Opoku-Agyemang’s achievements and urging an apology from the NPP leadership.

Upon resumption, Afenyo-Markin withdrew his remarks, allowing the debate on the State of the Nation Address to proceed.

A-Plus directed by court to retract defamation statements and pay 100k to Hassan Zein

Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, has opted for a settlement in the defamation lawsuit initiated against him by Ghanaian business magnate and philanthropist, Hassan Zein.

The legal action stemmed from defamatory remarks made by the controversial musician-turned-politician, damaging Zein’s reputation.

According to court documents, A Plus has chosen to resolve the matter through an agreement with the businessman.

As part of the settlement, A Plus is obliged to retract and apologize for the defamatory comments that led to the legal proceedings.

Mr Zein filed the defamation suit in 2022, seeking GH¢10 million in general damages and various orders, including a public apology and the removal of defamatory content.

Despite the case progressing in the High Court in Accra, A Plus and Zein reached an agreement on January 22, 2024.

Subsequently, on January 29, 2024, the court, presided over by Justice Kwasi Adjenim-Boateng, adopted the settlement terms as the consent judgment.

In adherence to the agreement, A Plus will retract the comments and images of Zein through the same medium where the defamatory content was posted.

Additionally, an apology will be issued using the same medium, and A Plus is required to pay GH¢100,000 in costs to Zein.

The court documents affirm that these terms constitute the comprehensive understanding between the parties, effectively concluding the legal dispute arising from the defamation suit.

Despite Mr. Hassan Zein’s expressed concern about such occurrences in a civilized state like Ghana, attempts to reach A Plus’s legal counsel remained unanswered.

NPP working hard to destroy prophets – Nigel Gaisie

The founder and leader of Hope Generation Ministry International, Prophet Dr. Nana Akwesi Amponsah, widely known as Nigel Gaisie, has expressed concerns over what he perceives as a concerted effort by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to discredit and undermine prophets.

In a recent Facebook live video, the prophet addressed the criticism aimed at him for prophesying the death of the late Deputy Minister of Finance, John Kumah.

Emphasizing his commitment to his prophetic role, Nigel Gaisie stated that attempts to tarnish the reputation of prophets are part of an alleged agenda by the NPP.

During a Facebook live session on Monday, March 11 2024, prophet Nigel Gaisie stated that he remains resolute in his claim that he foresaw the tragic event that befell the late Deputy Minister of Finance, John Kumah.

In the video, he dismissed allegations attempting to tarnish his reputation, asserting, “The only thing they can say is that we prophets are womanizers, it is normal if you know we don’t really have time. I am too busy for this thing. It is the agenda of the NPP to destroy prophets. You can’t discredit Prophet Nigel.”

Emphasizing the validity of his prophecy, Gaisie stated, “Indeed I saw it [death],” cautioning the public not to dismiss prophetic messages lightly.

These statements come in response to Apostle Lilian Kumah, the wife of the late John Kumah, who refuted prophet Gaisie’s prophecy.

In an interview with Asaase Radio on Sunday, March 10, she revealed a personal connection between her family and the prophet.

Lilian Kumah argued that Mr Gaisie was well aware of John Kumah’s health condition since November 2023, questioning the authenticity of the prophecy.

“Nigel Gaisie was like a brother. He knows my late husband, lawyer John Kumah personally, one-on-one. We have sat in this house and eaten together several times. That is how far we go. When he came from abroad to start a church in Ghana, he came to my church, Disciples of Christ Ministries and I did a programme with him dubbed “Let the Prophet Speak”.

“We know him very well and have been aware since November 2023 that the late John Kumah was seriously sick. My husband had a lot of respect for men of Ghana in this country and that included Nigel Gaisie when my husband and I thought he was a genuine man of God,” Apostle Lilian Kumah stated.

“Nigel Gaisie knew very well that my husband was terminally ill as far back as August 2023 but regardless of that, he stood on his altar on 31st December 2023 to lie through his supposed prophesy that a Ghanaian deputy minister will die in the year 2024.

“What does he want to achieve through these fake prophesies?” John Kumah’s widow further stated.

John Kumah, the 45-year-old lawmaker for Ejisu, passed away on Thursday, March 7, leaving behind a wife and six children.

The controversy surrounding Mr Gaisie’s prophecy has ignited debates about the credibility of such predictions and their impact on individuals and families.

John Kumah and wife sold lands that didn’t belong to them – Computer Man

Founder & Leader of Hope Generation Ministry International, Prophet Nana Akwesi Amponsah (Computer Man) has leveled allegations against the late deputy finance minister, John Kumah and his wife, Mrs Lilian Kumah.

In a viral video, he purported that the duo make profits from lands that do not belong to them.

According to him, they forcely claim ownership of the lands without compensating the victims.

“If I don’t attend John Kumah’s funeral it will be because of his wife. The woman is disrespectful. She speaks anyhow to anyone. John Kumah and his wife bullied people over lands. They aggressively took ownership of people’s lands and sold them to others.

In July 2023, the Member of Parliament for Ejisu faced accusations of land grabbing when a viral video emerged.

The footage showcased an elderly woman accusing John Kumah of deceitfully acquiring her land, initially intended for a government project, but allegedly used for personal gain.

In the emotional video, the woman fervently demanded the return of her land, branding John Kumah a thief and expressing her determination to expose his actions.

Although John Kumah passed away on March 7, 2024, a video from July 2023 resurfaced, featuring the woman accusing him of land grabbing.

The footage captured her tearfully asserting that Kumah had deceived them by promising to use the land for a government initiative, only to exploit it later for his private business ventures.

Her cries for justice echoed as she pledged to publicly expose John Kumah’s alleged theft.

Another voice in the video supported her accusations, condemning Kumah for betraying their trust.

Following John Kumah’s sudden death, social media speculations emerged, suggesting a potential connection between his demise and the distress caused by the woman’s accusations.

While the circumstances surrounding the MP’s death remain unclear, the resurfaced video highlights the serious allegations leveled against him.

Additionally, Onua TV presenter Captain Smart alleged that John Kumah died from food poisoning, linking it to an event involving NPP’s Chairman Wontumi.

According to reports, he collapsed in his office and was swiftly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Subsequently, due to a decline in his condition, he was flown out of the country.

However, Captain Smart has stated that this tiring period is a time where the widow must isolate, not a time to be engaging in long talks in a quest to attract attention.

In a viral he emphasised that she needs to stay at home and mourn her husband, while symphathisers console her.

He added that instead she is visiting the police, radio station and places where a widow who has recently lost her loved one should not be seen.

“Politics is something orchestrated by Eve, due to power Sarpomaa who has her husband will not sit to mourn, be consoled and fed she would rather go to the police station, radio station, TV station. That’s nonsense! We have thrown our tradition and customs away, eeeiii really? Power has taken over wisdom and intelligence,” he added.

Captain Smart’s criticism comes after the bereaved wife dragged him to the police to provide evidence that her husband died from food poisoning.

Captain Smart had alleged that John Kumah was intentionally poisoned because of his political ambitions, stating that he represented a threat to certain party leaders.

“He has been poisoned 3 times, ask Osei-Kyei-Mensah if I am telling lies. His wife is a nurse. So now when he is travelling his wife carries along and accompanies him. Osei Kyei Mensah has been poisoned 3 times, some people have marked him for death. I know what I am saying. When you meet Kyei Mensah Bonsu tell him I am the one who is making the claim,” he added.

2023 African Games: Lack of support from govt forced us to purchase our bicycles – Ghanaian Cyclists

Ghanaian cyclist Abigail Tetteh has shed light on the challenges faced by athletes in the 2023 African Games, expressing her disappointment in the lack of support from authorities in a post-race interview.

Speaking to Onua Tv, Abigail Tetteh, along with three other Ghanaian cyclists, were unable to complete the women’s race due to inadequate equipment.

The team had to finance their own bicycles, opting for aluminum bikes, which proved less effective than the fiber bikes used by other countries.

This equipment disparity likely contributed to the team’s subpar performance at the games.

Mrs Tetteh’s remarks have ignited a conversation about the level of support provided to Ghanaian athletes at the African Games.

Questions have been raised about the substantial event spending without adequate allocation of resources for athletes.

It’s noteworthy that Tetteh isn’t the sole Ghanaian athlete expressing concerns about the lack of support from authorities.

Leslie Addo, a Ghanaian badminton player, has also addressed the challenges faced by athletes at the games.

Leslie highlighted that the badminton team only received equipment on the opening day, contributing to their struggles at the event.

As the host nation, Ghana is yet to secure any medals, with no athletes advancing past the round of 16 in the singles events. Egypt leads the medal table with 39 medals, followed by Algeria, South Africa, and Morocco.

Several other countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Mauritius, Namibia, Botswana, Uganda, and Madagascar, have also secured medals.

Only 4 out of 9 IPPs have been paid by ECG – Bright Simons

Vice president for Imani Africa, Bright Simons has claimed that only four out of nine Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have received money from Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to him, the IPPs were paid less than $9.5 million in January 2024, despite the initial amount of $43 million dollars.

Taking to the X platform  Bright Simons indicated “I always tell folks that the secret to policy analysis in Ghana is to watch what folks in power do, not listen to what they say. They said ECG pays $43m to private power producers monthly, no? Turns out in Jan, they paid only 4 out of the 9 IPPs. And it was less than $9.5M”.

In 2023, government announced that it had reached an agreement with IPPs to address Ghana’s indebtedness threatening the energy sector.

In an interview with the media, the Minister of State for the Finance Ministry, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam indicated that the $43 million dollars was to solely address power generated and utilized by the government.

He revealed that the energy distributors have accepted to receive “some monthly payments of about $43 million in every month”.

“We have negotiated with them [IPPs] and we’ve agreed to some monthly payments and in every month, about $43 million shared amongst them for energy supply [energy consumed] because you know that they have excess capacity and so we have negotiated with them to pay for energy consumed which means we are currently not paying for the excess that we do not consume,” he said.

He emphasised that the IPPs have so far been paid twice ever since the agreement was reached.

According to him, since the agreement was reached, the IPPs have been settled twice.

“In July, we paid $43 million. ECG has just paid for August $43 million, two, three days ago and that is going to continue. We want to be current.

“Also , because under our IMF programme we have to be current with our payments, we are not supposed to rebuild arrears and so that is satisfactory to the IPPS and that was why they came out with the statement to call off their threats,” he explained.

    Background

On May 28, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and distributors issued a threat to disconnect power supply to the national grid by the end of June 2023 if the government did not settle its outstanding debt.

These IPPs collectively control more than 65% of the available thermal generation capacity in the country.

Despite numerous appeals from various stakeholders urging the IPPs to reconsider their decision, they remained steadfast, insisting on a 30% payment of the debt owed before resuming power supply.

However, a significant development occurred on June 30, as the IPPs released a statement announcing the suspension of their planned power plant shutdown. This decision followed what they described as productive discussions with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Previously, the Chamber had instructed its members to cease operations from July 1 to July 8 if the government did not fulfill the condition of paying 30% of the $1.73 billion owed to the IPPs.

Former President John Mahama, has taken a retrospective look at his presidency, acknowledging the challenges posed by his commitment to transparency.

While expressing the importance of elected officials being forthright to foster trust, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), voiced concerns about the current government’s lack of transparency, particularly regarding recent power challenges, suggesting a deliberate effort to withhold information from the public.

Mahama, known for his honesty, reflected on his presidency, stating, “I was brought up to tell the truth at all times, so when I was President, if things were not going well, I told the people of Ghana and what we were trying to do about it. I think my honesty was one of the major problems I had because I didn’t think that I should fool my people”.

The former president reiterated his commitment to openness, emphasizing differences in intentions with the current administration.

He criticized the present government for not fully disclosing crucial information, citing recent power sector developments as evidence.

“We know that they are shedding the load, they have a problem with generation. Some generation assets are down, they have a problem with paying for gas. Every day they are shedding between 280 and 480 megawatts of power but they will not give us a timetable because that is what Ghanaians know as dumsor”.

“We must not only hold to account the government that has gone out. We must also hold to account our own people who go wrong while we are in government”.

He urged accountability not only for the outgoing government but also for those within the current administration who make mistakes. These remarks were made during Mahama’s ongoing Building Ghana Tour in the Upper West Region.

Let Dampare and his officers oversee 2024 elections, do not interfere – Kwesi Pratt to political parties

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has issued a warning to political parties in the country, urging them not to interfere with the duties of the Ghana Police Service during the upcoming elections.

Despite persistent calls from the Seventh Day Adventists Church and a section of the Ghanaian public to change the election date to accommodate their Sabbath Day observance, the Electoral Commission (EC) has maintained December 7 as the official date for the elections.

The Adventists had requested a shift in the election date as it coincided with their sacred Sabbath Day, falling on a Saturday this year.

The EC, however, has decided to stick to December 7 for the elections, rejecting the proposed change to a Tuesday in November.

Additionally, the EC has agreed, during their Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra, to retain the indelible ink as a verification method and continue with the guarantor system alongside the Ghana Card as identification for the elections.

Emphasizing the crucial role of the police in maintaining law and order during the elections, Kwesi Pratt commended the Inspector General of Police, expressing confidence in Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s integrity.

He urged political parties to refrain from interfering with the work of the police on election day, stating, “Allow Dampare and his officers to work. No interference!”

GPHA advances vessel traffic management efforts

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is initiating the development of a maritime single-window system for efficient vessel traffic management, according to Mr. Michael Achagwe Luguje, the Director General of GPHA.

This system is aimed at enhancing the working relationships with key stakeholders in the clearance chain.

Mr. Luguje unveiled this plan during GPHA’s media forum, emphasizing that it would complement the existing Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) and paperless port clearance system, revolutionizing port transactions.

Speaking about port clearance in 2023, Mr. Luguje highlighted the GPHA’s commitment to retooling the ports, despite handling one million tonnes less cargo than in 2022.

The director revealed significant investments in modern machinery and equipment, including marine crafts, cranes, reach stackers, and forklifts.

Infrastructural projects, such as the expansion of MPS Terminal 3 in Tema and the completion of the multi-purpose and container terminal in Takoradi, contributed to the enhancement of port capabilities.

The director general reported that the oil and gas terminal is slated for completion by the end of 2024, with the ultra-modern Dry Bulk Terminal in the Port of Takoradi equipped with state-of-the-art conveyor systems and eco-hoppers to handle various bulk cargoes effectively.

These developments in Takoradi align with GPHA’s master plan to diversify service offerings to meet growing demand.

He emphasized the GPHA’s dedication to making the ports the preferred choice in West and Central Africa, urging importers and exporters to maintain trust in their services.

Bawumia holds talks with Ghana Upstream Petroleum Chamber

Members of the Ghana Upstream Petroleum Chamber recently convened for a breakfast meeting with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The primary purpose of the gathering was to apprise the Vice President of the challenges confronting the sector and explore collaborative efforts between the industry and the government to address these issues.

During the presentation to the Vice President and his team, the Chamber offered a comprehensive overview of the oil and gas industry, shedding light on the challenges that have contributed to the absence of new petroleum agreements since 2017.

CEO of the Chamber, David Ampofo, emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation, stating, “Peak oil production occurred in 2019, but since then, there has been a 32 percent decline.

This requires more exploration and new discoveries if the decline is to be arrested.”

In response, Vice President Dr. Bawumia expressed his commitment to fostering deeper collaboration between the government and the industry.

He assured the members of his dedication to making Ghana a more appealing oil and gas destination, mentioning his intention to benchmark Ghana’s fiscal regime against other attractive destinations like Guyana, Namibia, and Côte D’Ivoire.

The meeting facilitated meaningful engagement between the Vice President and representatives from exploration and production, as well as local and international service companies within the industry. It provided a platform for the Vice President to actively listen to the concerns and perspectives of the industry stakeholders.

  • Bond market witnesses influx of offshore investor appetite

Bond market witnesses influx of offshore investor appetite

In recent weeks, offshore investors have demonstrated an increasing interest in local currency (LCY) bonds on the secondary market, as reported by GCB Capital, an investment advisory firm.

According to GCB Capital’s cautious analysis in its February report, this growing offshore investor appetite could be a speculative strategy involving purchasing undervalued bonds in anticipation of price recovery amidst an improving macroeconomic outlook.

“We have noted in recent weeks improving offshore appetite for positions in LCY bonds on the secondary market. This emerging offshore investor appetite may be a speculative strategy of buying the dip,” GCB Capital said.

Traditionally dominated by sell-buybacks and repo transactions, accounting for 80 percent of market activity, the secondary bond market has experienced limited pure trades among investors, hindering effective price discovery.

Despite this, trading activity in LCY bonds is steadily increasing, with weekly turnovers averaging GH¢1.22 billion, a notable rise from the previously sluggish post-DDEP market.

The market witnessed an aggregate volume turnover of GH¢22.82 billion in the first two months of 2024, with T-bills accounting for nearly 70 percent of the total volume traded.

GCB Capital noted that two coupon payments without distress could prompt write-backs, potentially improving valuations after substantial impairments were recorded in 2022.

While acknowledging lingering risks, particularly in refinancing (2027 and 2028) and significant single-day coupon obligations, GCB Capital anticipates write-backs in 2024, leading to improved valuations and heightened activity in the secondary fixed-income market.

Despite ongoing uncertainties, GCB Capital suggests that strict fiscal discipline, coupled with IMF support, will help build on the macro gains achieved so far.

“Following the latest coupon payment and anticipated improvement in bond valuations, buying the dip could ultimately benefit fixed-income investors with a medium-to-long-term horizon,” advised GCB Capital.

Additionally, the market expects favorable outcomes from the end-of-month portfolio adjustment by pension fund managers in February 2024, particularly concerning bond exchanges.

Justice Patricia Quansah, presiding over the court, also imposed a GHS12,000 fine on the legal representative of Zonda Sinotruck, both facing the threat of imprisonment in case of default.

The contempt charges were brought forward by Narh Global Services, accusing Mrs. Yang Yang and Zonda Sinotruck of gross disobedience and disregard for a pending breach of contract lawsuit.

During the attack, workers were reportedly assaulted, the mine manager handcuffed to a stationary vehicle, and essential supplies, including diesel, were seized.

The court found Mrs. Yang Yang and the legal representative guilty of contempt in its recent ruling.

Political play in power cuts hindering industrial growth AGI

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has expressed concern over the politicization of power outages in the country, emphasizing the need for a swift national consensus to address challenges in the energy sector.

AGI decried the labeling of intermittent power cuts as ‘dumsor,’ stating it hampers Ghana’s industrialization efforts. Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Chairman of the Oil and Gas sector at AGI, stressed the importance of electricity as a crucial engine for industrial growth, urging for a non-political approach.

Speaking at a policy dialogue during World Sustainable Energy Day in Accra, Mr. Jantuah emphasized the significance of treating energy as a national discussion rather than a political issue. He called for political leaders to engage in dialogue and reach agreements for the benefit of the nation.

In response to recent outages, AGI urged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide a timetable for consumer planning. Mr. Jantuah emphasized the need to move beyond politics and focus on effective governance to address energy sector challenges.

He called on Members of Parliament to lead efforts for a national consensus to address bottlenecks in the energy sector, supporting industrialization, economic growth, and sustainability. Mr. Jantuah emphasized the importance of both political parties collaborating to advance the country.

Regarding recent outages, Mr. Sam Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of ECG, clarified that the interruptions were due to local faults, not supply issues. He highlighted urgent measures to replace the gas plant valve, worth $200 million, which contributed to recent outages.

Mr. Jantuah urged ECG to take decisive steps to eliminate wastages, collect funds efficiently, and distribute resources effectively.

In November 2023, Ghana’s total electricity consumption reached 21,440 GWh, with a projected year-end figure of 23,617 GWh and an estimated consumption of 24,997 GWh, representing a 5.8% increase for 2024, according to the Energy Commission.

“So far as the lights are going off intermittently, once a day or twice a day, it’s ‘dumsor,’” Mr Kwame Jantuah, Chairman, Oil and Gas sector, said in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency.

“Energy is like air, and so important for houses and industry, and we cannot mess with it. Where power is concerned, it shouldn’t be a political situation, but a national discussion where political leaders sit and come to an agreement,” Mr Jantuah said.

  • Elon Musk sued for alleged $128m unpaid severance to former Twitter executives

Elon Musk sued for alleged $128m unpaid severance to former Twitter executives

Elon Musk is currently facing legal action from four former Twitter executives, including ex-chief Parag Agrawal, who claim that he owes them over $128 million in unpaid severance.

The executives allege that Musk dismissed them without cause after acquiring Twitter, now X, and fabricated reasons to avoid fulfilling the severance agreement.

The lawsuit asserts that this action is part of a broader pattern of Musk refusing to pay former employees what they are owed. The four executives, including Agrawal, former CFO Ned Segal, former CLO Vijaya Gadde, and former GC Sean Edgett, insist that, according to the severance plan, they are entitled to one year’s salary and stock awards.

This would amount to over $57 million for Agrawal, more than $44 million for Segal, over $20 million for Gadde, and more than $6 million for Edgett.

Despite Musk’s purchase of Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, the lawsuit claims he has been trying to evade the millions owed to the executives by rejecting the severance plans outlining compensation for job termination without cause.

The lawsuit accuses Musk of transforming the company into an entity that disregards the law and fails to fulfill financial obligations.

While Musk has not commented on the lawsuit, the executives portray him as someone who avoids paying debts and mistreats employees.

“Musk doesn’t pay his bills, believes the rules don’t apply to him, and uses his wealth and power to run roughshod over anyone who disagrees with him,” according to the filing in federal court in California.

The legal dispute over the money has been ongoing, and the executives claim that the administrative process has been exhausted.

Last year, a former HR officer at Twitter filed a class-action lawsuit, alleging that the company owed approximately $500 million in severance pay to former staff.

The four executives’ legal action aims to portray Musk as someone unwilling to pay debts and mistreating employees, claiming that his refusal to pay is part of a broader pattern within Twitter.

“Musk’s refusal to pay … is part of a larger pattern of refusing to pay Twitter’s former employees the benefits and other compensation they are due,” Mr Agrawal and his former colleagues alleged in the lawsuit.

He shared that he informed John Kumah, whose hotel room was close to Chairman Wontumi, about the incident.

At 1am Chairman called my phone fifteen (15) times and when I returned his calls, he couldn’t pick up. I knocked his door for more than 3 minutes and when he finally came to open the door, he was in his boxer shorts and had vomited all over the place- on his bed, floor and the washroom”, Oheneba Nana Asiedu said.

Fare thee well warrior, you went through pain – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s tribute to John Kumah

In a heartfelt tribute, Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that a few months ago, he observed signs of “pain and turmoil” in his late colleague MP, Dr. John Kumah, who passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recounted a recent encounter with Dr. Kumah at the economy sub-committee meeting, just two days before his demise, where they exchanged ideas and laughter.

Despite Dr. Kumah’s assurance of bouncing back strongly, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noticed he was struggling.

In the lead-up to the passage of the Appropriations Bill in December, they had to wait for Dr. Kumah, who was in Germany for medical treatment.

Despite facing pain and turmoil, Dr. Kumah assured them he would be present on December 20, leading to the passage of the Appropriation Act on December 22.

Two days before his passing, Dr. Kumah smiled affectionately, and in the face of unexpected death, he embraced it like the warrior he was.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss, extending wishes for eternal rest and comforting the family left behind.

Adieu, John. Until we meet again. Fare thee well!

Read Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s full statement below:

John, Hon John Kumah, Member of Parliament for Ejisu & Deputy Minister For Finance.

Just learnt of your passing on — a tragedy of monumental proportions.

Just this Tuesday, we were together at the economy sub-committee of the manifesto committee. I sat right behind you. We spoke and shared ideas, we laughed, and I asked how you were feeling at the end of the day. The positive assurance was that you were bouncing back strongly.

That was reassuring. I could notice, though, that you were struggling a bit.

That was just less than 48 hours ago. And you have transitioned? If such is life, then life must be very, very cruel!

In the lead-up to the passage of the Appropriations Bill on December 22nd, we had to wait on you, learning of the unfortunate circumstances that had taken you to Germany.

The then-Finance Minister, Hon Ken Ofori-Atta and I spoke with you and you assured us that you would be with us on the 20th of December.

It is for this reason that the Appropriation Act was passed on the 22nd of December.

Subsequently, when I saw you, I realised that you had gone through some pain and turmoil, but God was in charge.

Two days ago, you smiled, your usual affectionate smile, an infectious one at that. When death, which we least expected beckoned; you embraced it….. the warrior that you were.

John, may God give you eternal rest and the good Lord comfort the rest of your family that you have left behind.

Adieu, until we meet again. John, Fare thee well!

John Kumah knew he was poisoned – Captain Smart

Onua TV morning show host, Captain Smart has alleged that the former deputy finance minister, John Kumah was conscious of the fact that he had been subjected to poisoning through food.

During an episode of his show, Captain Smart stated that John Kumah had to travel to India in a bid to seek medical attention as the poison was gradually deteriorating his health.

According to him, Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernrad Bosiako Antwi also known as Wontumi together with the late John Kumah were together poisoned through food at an occasion.

However, Wontumi, per Captain Smart’s account, started reacting to the poison after he had consumed the food whereas John Kumah looked well.

As such, John Kumah and his entourage were not bothered as he was not portraying any sign of reacting to the food served him.

Captain Smart claimed that John Kumah was intentionally poisoned because of his political ambitions, stating that he represented a threat to certain party leaders.

“John Kumah and some top officials who met the agenda of the meeting discussed how fast John Kumah was rising to a level such that no one could stop him. Ask Chairman Wontumi if he didn’t eat the same poisoned food as John Kumah? When those with John Kumah saw that Wontumi was reacting to the poisoned food and John Kumah wasn’t they thought John Kumah was okay”.

“Yesterday, people said I made a lot of allegations but today I will speak more. John Kumah was intentionally poisoned and he is aware. I can tell you the date and time John Kumah went to India to seek medical treatment.John Kumah really suffered. This issue of poisoning when did it start in NPP? Hon Appiah-Kubi was poisoned, it took a doctor at Akwei to save Appiah-Kubi. They wanted to poison him because he is allergic to bribe taking,”he added.

He mentioned that the former leader of the Majority Caucus, Osei-Kyei-Mensah in parliament has escaped the evil plans of these maleficent actors within the party.

He alleged that having observed the schemes and tactics of the sinister figures, Osei Kyei-Mensah- Bonsu carries his water with him wherever he finds himself.

Captain Smart further noted that, after their unsuccessful attempt to eliminate Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu through poisoning, the malevolent individuals redirected their focus towards the Member of Parliament (MP), Asante-Akim North Constituency, Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi and successfully poisoned him.

Captain Smart’s comments come in the death of John Kumah who passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Stop violating constitutional rules – Haruna Iddrisu tells Bagbin

The former leader of the Minority in Parliament, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has accused Speaker Alban Bagbin of violating the constitutional rules outlined in Article 124 of the 1992 Constitution.

According to Mr Iddrisu, the Speaker failed to adhere to the stipulations of this article, which requires the establishment of a committee to assist in selecting members for the Parliamentary Service Board following changes in the Minority group last year.

Mr Iddrisu raised this concern during the formation of a committee to aid the Speaker in appointing individuals to the Parliamentary Service Board following recent changes in the Majority group.

He emphasized, “The changes in the Minority leadership happened over a year ago. So, what has the Parliamentary Service Board been doing with the Speaker and Ato Forson? That is against the Constitution”.

“The Speaker, Mr. Alban Bagbin, is not above the Constitution. He’s not above the rules, and so, when we’re talking about wrong things, it’s a problem when they break the rules of the Constitution.”

Contrary to Iddrisu’s claims, the Majority Leader, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, asserted that Mr. Bagbin followed the correct procedures when Iddrisu vacated his position.

  • Vendor for Ghana’s first nuclear power plant to be selected by close of 2024

Vendor for Ghana’s first nuclear power plant to be selected by close of 2024

The Ministry of Energy has revealed plans to select a vendor for Ghana’s inaugural nuclear power plant by the close of 2024, aiming for operational status by 2030.

Dr. Robert Sogbadji, Deputy Director of Power (Nuclear and Alternative Energy), shared this information during a policy dialogue marking World Sustainable Energy Day in Accra.

The event was organized by the Centre of Excellence in Public Utility Regulation (CEPUR), a collaboration between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PUCR) and the Ghana Institute for Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Dr. Sogbadji outlined that the country is currently in phase two of its nuclear power program, with plans to announce the selected vendor company by year-end.

The first nuclear power plant is anticipated to become part of Ghana’s energy mix by 2030 or 2032, contributing significantly to achieving net-zero goals and energy transition objectives.

Addressing the country’s US$561.9 billion financing requirement for energy transition, Dr. Sogbadji mentioned the government’s strategic plan to secure about 46% from the private sector.

Herbert Krapa, Deputy Minister of Energy, affirmed the progress of Ghana’s energy transition agenda, emphasizing the implementation of a clear strategy to attract investments. He highlighted pipeline projects, including 2,000 megawatts of solar and wind energy, to attract financing from various investors.

Mr Krapa emphasized efforts to scale up the domestic currency and explore technologies like carbon capture utilization, electronic vehicles, and green hydrogen to align with the transition pathway.

He indicated the government’s commitment to balancing conventional (hydro), solar, and nuclear power for sustainable electricity.

Kwame Jantuah, Chairman of the Oil and Gas sector at the Association of Ghana Industries, called for a balanced approach in utilizing conventional, solar, and nuclear power for sustainable electricity.

He suggested incentivizing residential solar panel adoption to reduce conventional costs, with excess energy contributing to the overall mix for export.

Jantuah emphasized the importance of leaving vendor selection in the hands of the nuclear energy body to prevent political interference. Ghana envisions implementing both a large reactor (1,000-1,200 megawatts) and a small modular reactor (about 300 megawatts) for its nuclear power plant, aligning with the country’s industrialization goals and sustainable development objectives.

“We’re currently in phase two of our nuclear power programme, and by the end of this year, we should be able to announce our vendor company to build our first nuclear power plant, which we foresee to be in the energy mix by 2030,” Dr Sogbadji said.

“So, by 2030 or 2032, we would have advanced strongly towards meeting net zero and meet energy transition goals,” he said.
