  • Vendor for Ghana’s first nuclear power plant to be selected by close of 2024

Vendor for Ghana’s first nuclear power plant to be selected by close of 2024

The Ministry of Energy has revealed plans to select a vendor for Ghana’s inaugural nuclear power plant by the close of 2024, aiming for operational status by 2030.

Dr. Robert Sogbadji, Deputy Director of Power (Nuclear and Alternative Energy), shared this information during a policy dialogue marking World Sustainable Energy Day in Accra.

The event was organized by the Centre of Excellence in Public Utility Regulation (CEPUR), a collaboration between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PUCR) and the Ghana Institute for Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Dr. Sogbadji outlined that the country is currently in phase two of its nuclear power program, with plans to announce the selected vendor company by year-end.

The first nuclear power plant is anticipated to become part of Ghana’s energy mix by 2030 or 2032, contributing significantly to achieving net-zero goals and energy transition objectives.

Addressing the country’s US$561.9 billion financing requirement for energy transition, Dr. Sogbadji mentioned the government’s strategic plan to secure about 46% from the private sector.

Herbert Krapa, Deputy Minister of Energy, affirmed the progress of Ghana’s energy transition agenda, emphasizing the implementation of a clear strategy to attract investments. He highlighted pipeline projects, including 2,000 megawatts of solar and wind energy, to attract financing from various investors.

Mr Krapa emphasized efforts to scale up the domestic currency and explore technologies like carbon capture utilization, electronic vehicles, and green hydrogen to align with the transition pathway.

He indicated the government’s commitment to balancing conventional (hydro), solar, and nuclear power for sustainable electricity.

Kwame Jantuah, Chairman of the Oil and Gas sector at the Association of Ghana Industries, called for a balanced approach in utilizing conventional, solar, and nuclear power for sustainable electricity.

He suggested incentivizing residential solar panel adoption to reduce conventional costs, with excess energy contributing to the overall mix for export.

Jantuah emphasized the importance of leaving vendor selection in the hands of the nuclear energy body to prevent political interference. Ghana envisions implementing both a large reactor (1,000-1,200 megawatts) and a small modular reactor (about 300 megawatts) for its nuclear power plant, aligning with the country’s industrialization goals and sustainable development objectives.

“We’re currently in phase two of our nuclear power programme, and by the end of this year, we should be able to announce our vendor company to build our first nuclear power plant, which we foresee to be in the energy mix by 2030,” Dr Sogbadji said.

“So, by 2030 or 2032, we would have advanced strongly towards meeting net zero and meet energy transition goals,” he said.

Poisoning galore in NPP? Captain Smart reveals list of MPs who have allegedly been targets

Onua TV morning show host, Captain Smart has exposed certain evil acts being demonstrated by certain individuals within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to the media, the host alleged that the former leader of the Majority Caucus, Osei-Kyei-Mensah in parliament has escaped the evil plans of these maleficent actors within the party.

According to him, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has for three times eluded the clutches of death despite being poisoned.

He alleged that having observed the schemes and tactics of the sinister figures, Osei Kyei-Mensah- Bonsu carries his water with him wherever he finds himself.

Captain Smart further noted that, after their unsuccessful attempt to eliminate Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu through poisoning, the malevolent individuals redirected their focus towards the Member of Parliament (MP), Asante-Akim North Constituency, Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi and successfully poisoned him.

Unfortunately the only individual, according to him, who has become a victim of their schemes is the former deputy finance minister, John Kumah.

Captain Smart claimed that John Kumah was intentionally poisoned because of his political ambitions, stating that he represented a threat to certain party leaders.

Captain Smart issued a cautionary warning to other individuals, urging them to exercise vigilance as they may also be targeted.

“He has been poisoned 3 times, ask Osei-Kyei-Mensah if I am telling lies. His wife is a nurse. So now when he is travelling his wife carries along and accompanies him. Osei Kyei Mensah has been poisoned 3 times, some people have marked him for death. I know what I am saying. When you meet Kyei Mensah Bonsu tell him I am the one who is making the claim.

“When they failed to kill Osei Kyei Mensah through poison, those evil individuals channelled their attention to Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi and poisoned him. After they had succeeded they went after John Kumah,” he added.

The late minister passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

According to reports, he collapsed in his office and was swiftly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Subsequently, due to a decline in his condition, he was flown out of the country.

  • GHS2.6m I loaned for National Cathedral project was refunded to me – Rev. Kusi Boateng

GHS2.6m I loaned for National Cathedral project was refunded to me – Rev. Kusi Boateng

The Executive Secretary of the Board of Trustees overseeing the National Cathedral Project, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has denied accusations of illicitly receiving GH¢2.6 million from the initiative.

The allegations were levied by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In an interview on Onua FM on March 7, 2024, Rev. Boateng refuted the claims, asserting that the GH¢2.6 million in question was actually a loan he provided to the project.

The National Cathedral Project was facing financial challenges and urgently required funds for crucial purchases.

Rev. Boateng emphasized that these transactions were well-documented in an official letter.

In response to the accusations, Rev. Boateng expressed his disbelief, stating, “It’s so funny, human beings know the truth but will look upon the face of God and lie. How can a whole MP who come out to say that I have stolen GH¢2.6 million, if he does this, how can we build the Cathedral?”

“The person doing this has seen the said documents, he’s seen it privately, he’s seen it publicly that the Cathedral had to make some payments for some items, and at the time the Cathedral didn’t have money to support itself.

“As the Secretary, I informed the Secretariat that I had some money that I could help assist in making such payments, and with that, an official letter was written to me to release the funds that I said I had and after 14 days or so, the funds were transferred back to me ” Rev. Boateng explained.

He further explained that as the Secretary, he informed the Secretariat about the available funds he could contribute to essential payments.

An official letter was then drafted, requesting the release of the funds, and after approximately 14 days, the funds were returned to him.

Another member of the Board of Trustees, Reverend Dr. Joyce Aryee, had earlier defended the GH¢2.6 million payment to JNS Talent Centre Limited, a firm connected to Kusi Boateng. She explained that the secretariat urgently needed the amount to settle a contractor but lacked the funds. In response, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng stepped in to pay the specified amount, which was subsequently refunded to him without any interest.

Let’s build the Ghana we want together – Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings

Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey Constituency, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has encouraged Ghanaians to actively participate in the nation-building process and uphold democratic values.

Addressing attendees at the 67th Independence Day parade organized by the General Accra Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) in Accra, Dr. Zanetor emphasized that democracy is an ongoing process that demands the collective engagement of all citizens.

She urged individuals to reflect on the challenges faced by democratic systems across the continent, emphasizing the need for each citizen to contribute to preserving and strengthening the democracy enjoyed in the country.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s independence celebration, “Our Democracy, Our Pride,” Dr. Zanetor cautioned against adopting negative practices in the political landscape and instead encouraged identifying positive aspects to build upon.

“We must ask ourselves why we see a lot of reversals from democratic rule across the continent and look deep to make sure, individually and collectively, we ensure that the pillars of good governance are adhered to to protect and preserve the democracy we enjoy in the country,” she said.

“Let not emulate the bad habits we see in our political space these days, but rather identify the good things across us and build on them, because that is how we ensure our democracy is consolidated and stronger,” she added.

In preparation for the upcoming December polls, she appealed to stakeholders to ensure the integrity of the election process, advocating for free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Mr. Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, Municipal Chief Executive for KoKMA, highlighted Ghana’s historical journey since the overthrow of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1966, emphasizing the country’s commitment to democratic rule since the adoption of the 1992 constitution.

He stressed the importance of investing in human security and development for the prosperity of all citizens.

“Since then, Ghana has held eight successive elections after every four years without interference from the military as it is the case in other countries, due to the fact that as a country we have put democratic structures and systems in place to deal with election challenges,” he said.

Mr. Tawiah also urged students to cultivate discipline, respect for authority, and dedication to academic pursuits, emphasizing their role in shaping the future of the nation.

“We as adults, have a responsibility to provide you with the opportunity to achieve this, in the likewise manner, you have the responsibility to use your time wisely and well. Therefore, the future is yours and you must adequately prepare for it.”

Additional US$250m needed for National Cathedral completion – Board of Trustees Secretary

A member and secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has provided an estimate of the funds required to complete the facility amidst reported funding challenges leading to project delays.

In a March 7, 2024 interview on Onua FM, Kusi Boateng emphasized the importance of considering the advantages that the completed National Cathedral would bring to the nation.

He stated, “If we could raise an amount of US$200 million to US$250 million, the National Cathedral will be completed. Let’s look at the advantages the Cathedral will bring to Ghana and its financial benefits. As a nation, God has blessed us, we need to come together and thank Him.”

He added that comparatively, the project would be less expensive than a similar one in the United States, pointing out that Ghana’s edifice will also boast of more attractive facilities.

Comparatively, he highlighted that the project’s cost would be less than a similar one in the United States while featuring more attractive facilities.

Kusi Boateng pointed out, “Washington Museum in construction cost US$600 million but after the completion of the Cathedral, Ghana shall have a Bible museum of Africa that will in terms of space, content and technology be higher than the American Museum that cost them US$600 million.

“All costs together our Cathedral, Biblical Museum, Biblical Gardens is just around $300 million, and ours is bigger than the American Bible Museum that costs $600 million.

Furthermore, Kusi Boateng dismissed claims made by Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has raised concerns about the project’s legality and alleged corruption.

Ablakwa has been vocal about demanding accountability for the use of public resources in the cathedral project, citing issues related to corporate governance breaches, financial impropriety, and identity fraud within the project’s Board of Trustees.

“If you look in-depth into the data, you realise that although US$300 million is money but compared to the US$600 million, we’ve done well,” he stressed

Certain people want to crash a deputy minister of finance – What prophet Nigel Gaisie said in 2023

Prophet Nigel Gaisie, from the Prophetic Hill Chapel in Accra, delivered his New Year’s prophecies during the early hours of Monday, January 1, 2024, cautioning the congregation to pray against some unsettling events revealed to him by God.

Conducting the 31st December Watch Night Service at the church headquarters in Dome, prophet Gaisie shared approximately 20 prophecies, as reported by GhanaWeb.

Among them, he made a prediction concerning a Deputy Minister of Finance.

In his prophecy, prophet Gaisie foresaw the potential ascent of the deputy minister to the highest echelons of government if he could successfully navigate impending threats against him.

“I saw a deputy Minister of Finance, if he can take care of himself, I see him at the highest height of government, but they want to attack him.

“If he can take care of himself, in the next years, God will help him and I saw him at the seat of government, but they have ganged, they have sat down, they want to crash him, a deputy minister of finance,” Prophet Nigel Gaisie declared without mentioning a specific name.

During the prophecy, Ghana had two deputy finance ministers, John Kumah and Abena Osei-Asare.

The prophetic words appear to have materialized with the passing of John Kumah on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

The late MP had previously been rumored as a potential running mate to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

  • We leave whoever has a hand in John Kumah’s death to God – Aide

Dominic Danquah, an aide to the late deputy finance minister, John Kumah, has responded to speculations about his boss being poisoned several months ago.

Social media buzzed with claims that the Member of Parliament for Ejisu had fallen victim to poisoning for political motives, primarily fueled by a broadcast from Onua TV’s Captain Smart.

In an interview with Accra-based Class FM following the confirmation of Kumah’s death, Danquah paid tribute to his late boss and expressed bewilderment at the idea of someone intentionally taking his life.

“We weren’t expecting anything like that, so when the news came in, it wasn’t easy. We have not been able to talk, but no matter what we do, no matter the amount of hours we cry or wail, he is not coming back. God knows best.

“So, whoever had a hand in that, we leave that person to God. There is nothing that we can do, God knows the person and God knows John Kumah was a Godfearing man… so, it was like, poisoned? Why? How? What did he do, what has he done?

“Why would anyone think of poisoning or killing John Kumah? But it is finished, whatever they wanted, they can take it… we know how it happened but just as I said, we cannot do anything about it. God knows best,” he stressed.

He went on to address the poisoning speculation, questioning the motives behind such an act and emphasizing Kumah’s virtuous character.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Danquah resignedly stated, “Whatever they wanted, they can take it… we know how it happened, but just as I said, we cannot do anything about it. God knows best.”

A spokesperson for the MP also informed the media that Kumah passed away at the Suhum Government Hospital.

An ambulance transporting him to Accra had stopped en route due to his deteriorating condition. Kumah, expected to receive treatment in Germany for an undisclosed ailment, ultimately succumbed at the age of 45, leaving behind a wife and six children.

Kwasi Owusu Twumasi, spokesperson for the late Deputy Minister of Finance and MP for Ejisu, John Kumah, has clarified that the MP passed away at the Suhum Government Hospital, not in Germany as some reports suggested.

Contrary to speculations that Kumah died in Germany, Twumasi explained in an interview with Accra FM that the MP was in the process of traveling to Germany for medical treatment but, unfortunately, succumbed to his ailment at the Suhum Government Hospital on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Reports indicate that Kumah had visited his constituency in the Ashanti Region for the independence anniversary on March 6.

Mr Twumasi disclosed that the late MP had been unwell for some time, experiencing difficulty walking.

On March 6, doctors visited Mr Kumah at his residence in Ejisu, and due to the worsening of his health, plans were made to transfer him to Accra.

However, on the way to the airport for medical evacuation to Germany, they had to divert to Suhum Hospital as his condition deteriorated, leading to his unfortunate passing.

“We realised that he couldn’t walk properly and that was what drew our attention to getting him medical attention. Doctors came to his aid yesterday (March 6), but because his health was getting worse, he needed to bring him to Accra. “His office had made arrangements for him to be flown out of the country to Amsterdam and then transit to Germany this evening. So we began the journey in an ambulance from Ejisu, together with his wife. “When we got to Suhum, we had to divert to the hospital because his ailment was getting worse, and unfortunately, he passed on,” he stated.

IPAC meetings have been cordial ever since we returned – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has noted a positive shift in the atmosphere of Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings, describing the current environment as more amicable.

In January of this year, the NDC reversed its decision to abstain from IPAC meetings, marking a return to constructive engagement.

IPAC meetings provide a platform for political parties to review election-related activities, voice grievances, and contribute constructively.

The committee also serves as an advisory body to the Electoral Commission (EC).

In 2021, the NDC boycotted IPAC meetings, citing concerns about the EC’s alleged bias in favor of the New Patriotic Party during the 2020 general elections.

“It was very cordial. Don’t forget this year happens to be the third IPAC meeting that we attended. The first IPAC meeting was on 22nd February 2024. The second was on 29th February, and 7th March. So it’s been cordial since we returned to IPAC.”

“…It appears they have changed…It is not very cordial, very lovely. Not acrimonious. It is like the IPAC we used to know. That is consensus-building,” he stated.

A seven-member jury panel has been informed that Safina Mohammed, a 23-year-old Level 100 Biological student facing charges of allegedly murdering her boyfriend, engaged in “kinky sex” where she reportedly chained him and exploited his “weaknesses” to carry out her plans.

Safina Mohammed, also known as Safina Diamond, has entered a plea of not guilty to the murder charges involving her Ghanaian boyfriend, Frank Osei, who was a resident in Canada.

During her opening address to the jury on Thursday, March 7, Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Adinkra disclosed that the prosecution intends to present evidence demonstrating that the deceased was restrained with dog chains.

Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale has alleged that president Akufo-Addo’s nephew, Paul Danquah, who was the first son to the late J.B Danquah was known indulging in homosexual activities.

According to him, Paul Danquah got married to an English steel heir, Peter Pallock and they lived together in the United Kingdom (UK).

“Akufo-Addo should have known better than the 2 of us, he stayed and grew up with the homosexuals. Mr Akufo -Addo grew up with the first son of his uncle J.B Danquah who was called Paul  Danquah. Paul Danquah was a renowned homosexual who got married to Peter Pallock. They lived together and the entire world knew that Akufo-Addo’s nephew was homosexual,” he added.

This revelation comes in response to Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to the anti-gay bill passed by parliament on Wednesday February 26, 2024.

In defense of his delay to assenting the bill, president Akufo-Addo has stated that certain individuals have dragged parliament to the Supreme Court over the passage of the bill.

The president emphasised that he will make a decision after the court has given a verdict regarding the lawsuit.

In contrast, the Deputy Communications Officer for the NDC believes that Akufo-Addo has ulterior motives rather than waiting on the Supreme Court.

He added ” So I think that if there is a man to know more about homosexuality like Akufo-Addo stated in the Aljazeera interview that growing up in the UK he saw people virtually advocating for it and what have you . There was cause for action and that is why he is waiting to see the same in this country”.

Our relationship with Ghana hasn’t changed despite passage of anti-LGBTQ+ bill – IMF

In light of the recent approval of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill by Parliament, the World Bank Group has asserted its enduring commitment to its longstanding partnership with Ghana.

This statement is intended to address and dispel any speculations that the World Bank Group might reduce its support in terms of aid and development assistance to Ghana.

There have been growing concerns about potential financial challenges for Ghana, especially with warnings from the Finance Ministry indicating a potential loss of over $3 billion in World Bank funding for various programs and projects if the bill becomes law.

However, a spokesperson from the World Bank has clarified that the institution does not view the recently passed bill as a reason to alter its collaboration with Ghana on development programs.

The spokesperson underscored the ongoing productivity of the partnership between the World Bank and the Republic of Ghana.

“The World Bank Group has a longstanding and productive relationship with Ghana,” the spokesman said.

Addressing inquiries regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, the World Bank stated its policy of refraining from commenting on specific legislation, especially one that has not been signed into law.

“The Bill has not yet been signed into Law. We generally do not comment on Bills”.

At present, it remains uncertain whether the World Bank will take any punitive measures if the bill is fully enacted.

What happened to Nkrumah’s body after his death

History recounts that Ghana’s inaugural president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, succumbed to prostate cancer without any family members by his side in 1972 while in exile in Romania.

During his exile, Nkrumah harbored suspicions of being unsafe from Western intelligence agencies and feared poisoning.

These suspicions heightened when his cook died mysteriously in Conakry, Guinea, following his overthrow in Ghana. Upon Nkrumah’s demise on April 27, 1972, his body was sent to Guinea, where he had been appointed co-president.

A contentious saga unfolded regarding Nkrumah’s wishes for his remains. In his will, Nkrumah expressed a desire to be cremated, with his ashes scattered across Africa. Meanwhile, his elderly mother, Madam Elizabeth Nyaniba, yearned for her son’s body to be returned to Ghana.

The Ghana Police Service reportedly offered a $120,000 bounty for Nkrumah’s return, dead or alive, after his overthrow. The National Revolutionary Council (NRC), which assumed power, later revoked this reward.

Sékou Touré, Guinea’s President, withheld Nkrumah’s body despite assurances from Ghana’s leader at the time, Col Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.

Sékou Touré sought certain conditions, including the lifting of charges against Nkrumah, release of his supporters, and an official welcome for Nkrumah’s remains.

After international intervention by Presidents William Tolbert, Siaka Stevens, and General Yakubu Gowon, Sékou Touré agreed to return the body, leading to a state funeral in Guinea. The Guinean public and Nkrumah’s mother had fervently requested the return.

The state funeral, attended by African and global leaders, occurred on May 1, 1972. A Ghanaian delegation later attempted to persuade Sékou Touré to return Nkrumah’s body but was unsuccessful. Nkrumah’s embalmed body was eventually flown to Ghana on July 7, 1972, after months of negotiation. A national day of mourning was declared, and Nkrumah’s body was laid in state before being buried in his hometown of Nkroful.

GHS80m released by govt to support Akosombo flood victims – Akufo-Addo

The Ministry of Finance, on behalf of the government, has disbursed GH¢80 million to aid the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

This was made known by President Akufo-Addo during the 67th Independence Day parade in the Eastern region on Wednesday March 6, 2024.

The released funds constitute part of the GH¢220 million earmarked to support the ongoing rehabilitation efforts in the affected communities.

President Akufo-Addo assured that the government is fully committed to restoring normalcy to the lives and livelihoods of all affected individuals.

“Government will stop at nothing to restore normalcy to the lives and livelihoods of all affected persons,” he assured.

This announcement follows criticism from North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP) Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who expressed disappointment in the President for not addressing the victims in his State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Mr Ablakwa, representing a constituency severely impacted by the spillage in October 2023, condemned the President’s perceived neglect as un-Ghanaian.

President Akufo-Addo, in his Independence Day address, covered various achievements of his administration, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, the Bawku conflict, constitution amendment, Ghana’s IMF deal, health, and the upcoming 2024 elections.

However, he did not address the plight of the victims who have suffered losses in livelihoods and properties due to the spillage caused by the Volta River Authority (VRA).

In response to the omission, Ablakwa highlighted the unfortunate situation for Ghana, particularly for the 40,000 victims, some of whom have been living in tents for the past five months.

Dafeamekpor to sue Akufo-Addo over anti-gay bill

One of the backers of the recently approved anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Parliament, Rockson Dafeamekpor, has announced his plan to initiate legal action against President Akufo-Addo if he does not sign the bill within 14 days.

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi expressed his determination to bring the matter before the Supreme Court to compel President Akufo-Addo to fulfill his constitutional obligations.

In an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, March 7, Mr. Dafeamekpor underscored that he and his fellow sponsors remain steadfast in their commitment to seeing the bill enacted into law.

“As soon as we remit this to his office, time will begin to count and after 14 days if he doesn’t exercise responsibility, I’m going back to the Supreme Court to compel him to perform his constitutional function. I will suit the President,” he said.

Additionally, the legislator dismissed Richard Dela Sky’s lawsuit against Parliament in the Supreme Court regarding the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, asserting that it is destined to fail.

He argued that since the bill has not yet become law, Sky cannot file a lawsuit against it. According to Dafeamekpor, the Supreme Court should outrightly dismiss the lawsuit.

“It will fail because the law is very definite on such a matter. My position is grounded in law and I am confident of this.”

“I expect the Supreme Court to throw it away. The Bill is not yet a law. It is part of a calculated agenda to delay it.”

The controversial bill, passed unanimously by legislators on February 28, 2024, proposes a three-to-five-year jail term for individuals promoting or sponsoring LGBTQ activities.

Those found engaging in such activities could face a minimum sentence of 6 months and a maximum of 3 years.

Despite mounting pressure from Members of Parliament, President Akufo-Addo has expressed his intention to withhold assent until the court issues a ruling on the matter.

You can create jobs while safeguarding forests – Daryl Bonsu to Akufo-Addo

The National Deputy Director of A-Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bonsu, has voiced criticism against President Akufo-Addo for neglecting the preservation of the Atewa forest reserve in his Independence Day address on March 6 in Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital.

In his speech, the President revealed the government’s intention to mine bauxite deposits discovered in the Atewa Forest Reserve, citing the potential for job creation in the community.

However, Mr. Bonsu disagreed with the President. During an interview on Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey, he underscored the critical importance of preserving the forest reserve.

Mr. Bonsu expressed the belief that substantial job opportunities could be created in the Eastern region without resorting to the destruction of the forest.

He pointed out that studies have already highlighted the immense tourism potential in the area.

He urged the President to recognize the current value of the Atewa forest beyond its extractive minerals and immediate benefits, emphasizing the need to consider alternative sustainable options.

Mr. Bonsu contended that any push by President Akufo-Addo to proceed with mining in the Atewa forest would constitute a significant failure, especially considering the President’s roots in the Eastern region.

“I think it is about time we realised that we can equally create a significant amount of jobs for the people in the Eastern region without destroying the forest.

“Already studies have shown that we can take advantage of the monumental tourism potential in the area,” he added.

Politics now a lucrative venture – Kwame Jantuah

A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has raised concerns about the direction of politics and development in Ghana post-independence.

He expressed his worries about the professionalization of politics, emphasizing the prevalent issue of politicians amassing wealth at the expense of the nation.

During an interview on 3FMSunrise with Johnnie Hughes on March 6, coinciding with Ghana’s 67th Independence Day Celebration, Mr Jantuah questioned the ethics of using public funds for personal enrichment in politics.

“Politics has become a profession. If you want to be a politician, is it the country’s money that you use to make yourself rich? If you want to get rich in politics, you are stealing the people’s money,”  he said .

He lamented the lack of accountability and leadership in addressing corruption within the political sphere.

Mr Jantuah underscored the necessity for robust leadership that prioritizes the interests of the people over individual gains.

Reflecting on the significance of Independence Day, he emphasized the role of leaders in showcasing the nation’s progress and outlining a vision for the future.

Addressing a specific initiative, Mr Jantuah disclosed his involvement in crafting a 40-year national development plan designed to guide Ghana’s economic and social advancement.

“Who would point a finger at the corrupt politician? Who will listen?” he questioned, underscoring the need for strong leadership that prioritizes the interests of the people over personal gain.

“Our leaders should be able to show us where we came from, where we are, and where the mix is of the two. What vision do our leaders have?” he stated.

However, he expressed disappointment at the plan’s lack of implementation and limited public awareness.

Posing questions about the whereabouts of the document and its readership among Ghanaians, Mr Jantuah highlighted the plan’s potential to combat corruption and drive sustainable development.

He firmly stated that the national development plan is integral to the economic recovery of the nation.

He criticized the prevailing focus on party manifestos at the expense of the national development plan, emphasizing the need for a unified governance approach.

He pointed out that the original intention was for political parties to derive their manifestos from the comprehensive development plan, promoting a more cohesive and sustainable governance strategy.

“The president I know is buying time. He used every avenue and wanted us to delay the bill so that it doesn’t come to Jubilee House under his time for him to sign. That is why they wanted to put it down, bring other bills, we finish them, and they will bring others until Parliament said if we don’t finish this one, we will not do anything else. That is when they realized their hands were tied, and it was passed.”

The Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has reiterated the government’s dedication to the construction of the national cathedral, dismissing claims that the project is misguided.

Mr Ahiagbah emphasized that the project is currently underway.

This affirmation comes in response to a symbolic commissioning of the incomplete National Cathedral by some Minority Members of Parliament, including North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The act aimed to underscore their perception of the government’s failure to complete the project.

Despite facing initial restrictions from security personnel to access the construction site, the Minority MPs negotiated to stand at the entrance, where they planned to hold a press conference expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing project and its associated costs.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Ahiagbah emphasized the importance of not undermining the project and stated that the key challenge is securing more resources to complete it.

He stressed that the project is a work in progress and defended the commitment to building the national cathedral as a noble endeavor.

Ahiagbah concluded by advocating for increased revenue and resources to fulfill various national projects, emphasizing the importance of not underestimating one project’s significance over another.

“I think that the cathedral project is a work in progress. I think that for any project of that magnitude to begin you dig a foundation and you build it out. And so, where it is at, it is at the appropriate stage where in time the structure would be put on it. So, for me, I don’t see any real challenge. I don’t see any appearance of waste because necessarily you must dig the pit and build on it. So, if people want to capitalize that we are building a pit, we haven’t built it out, what I tell them is that it is just a matter of time and the structure would come out.”

“What I am very resolute and clear in my mind about is the commitment to build this and I believe that that commitment and desire to build a national cathedral for the country I think is a noble one and what we have to do is to continue in this effort and I believe that good people will come and support this project for it to see the light of day… “This cathedral thing, I think people make it seem to appear as if it is a misplaced project. It is not… What I think is our solution is that let’s get more revenue and more resources and build all of these things that we are looking for. And let’s not in the process underestimate the importance of one thing over the other,” he stated.

Tamale: 72 collapsed during Independence Day parade – Red Cross Society

During the 67th Independence Parade at the Tamale Jubilee Park on March 6, a total of 72 individuals, including students, service personnel, and soldiers, collapsed due to severe dehydration exacerbated by the harsh weather conditions of the day.

The extended exposure to the scorching sun led to the collapse of the students and personnel who stood for hours during the event.

The northern regional head of the Ghana Red Cross Society and part of the paramedic team at the regional Independence Day parade, Yakubu Amin Abukari, reported that all 72 individuals have been successfully resuscitated.

The parade, attended by dignitaries such as the northern regional minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu, and the mayor of Tamale, Sule Salifu, witnessed the unfortunate incident.

  • Naana Opoku Agyemang is too old to serve as Mahama’s vice president – Odike to Mahama

Founder and leader of the Union Government, Akwasi Addai Odike has advised, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama against selecting Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 general election.

Mr Odike expressed concerns about Opoku-Agyemang’s age, suggesting that, at 70, she is too old for the role and should be allowed to retire from public life.

During an appearance on the Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM, Mr Odike argued that menopause could affect a woman’s cognitive abilities and physical coordination.

He urged Mahama to reconsider his choice and opt for a more capable candidate, especially from the Ashanti region.

Mr Odike emphasized that the NDC has not adequately rewarded the Ashanti region for its consistent support over the years.

“This woman John Mahama is selecting to partner him as running mate for a second time is too old. She is 70 years old, she is in her menopausal stage. When women are in their menopause, it has an effect on how they do their things. Some of them suffer from dementia and become very forgetful. Menopause can even cause a woman to bathe one leg and leave the other when bathing.

“The woman is too old, you are foisting this lady on Ghanaians. Nobody hates her, but in life, there’s an extent to which everyone can perform. She’s done her part and it is time for others to continue. If John Mahama selected her once and they failed to win power, he should dump her and select a more capable person, especially from the Ashanti region. Otherwise, some of us will wage a campaign against the NDC,” Akwasi Addai Odike said on Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM Tuesday.

The businessman cum politician proposed alternative candidates from the Ashanti region, including Samuel Sarpong, Awuah Darko, Kojo Bonsu, and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor.

He warned that if Mahama persisted with his choice, some individuals would launch a campaign against the NDC.

Despite these objections, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC unanimously endorsed the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as John Mahama’s running mate.

“If you take out the Greater Accra Region, the Ashanti region is the other region that gives the NDC huge votes. The NDC is working hard in the Ashanti Region but the party has decided not to select a leader from that Region. We have great personalities from the Region who could be running mates, the likes of Samuel Sarpong a renowned Security expert, Awuah Darko, Kojo Bonsu and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor who performed excellently while in office as Finance Minister under President Mills. Even late President Rawlings acknowledged the importance of the Ashanti region to the NDC. But sadly, the party has sidelined the region when selecting a president or running mate.”

Mahama, in response to the endorsement, praised Opoku-Agyemang’s qualities and announced that the official public announcement of his running mate would occur on March 7, 2024.

I never meant to win Ayawaso West Wuguon election through violence – Lydia Alhassan

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Minister-designate for the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, addressed the 2019 by-election violence for the first time during her vetting on Tuesday, March 5.

Responding to inquiries, Madam Alhassan clarified that her aim during the election was to win and serve her constituents without resorting to violence.

“The incident that happened on 31st January 2019, is unfortunate. As a candidate, my focus was to win the election and support the voiceless and the underprivileged in my constituency. My intention of doing that was not to win through violence” she noted.

Madam Alhassan expressed her distress over the challenging experience on her initial day in Parliament after the elections.

“You all remember how I was received the first day I stepped foot into Parliament. A woman who was in pain, grieving. I’m glad there is an opportunity to bring closure to this matter and I would like to clear it off my chest”.

“As you are all aware, I was nowhere near when the incident occurred but as a woman and as a mother, I was so touched by it. I pray what happened on that day should never happen to any person trying to represent his/her people. It should never happen again in the history of our quest to lead this country in our democracy. Issue of violence should never happen in our elections ever again” she added.

  • What Nkrumah said about being ousted in 1966 by Kotoka

What Nkrumah said about being ousted in 1966 by Kotoka

In 1966, Colonel Emmanuel Kwesi Kotoka and Major Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa staged a coup d’état against Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah.

Nkrumah was out of the country during the ousting. As Ghana celebrates its 66th Independence Day today, we take a look at Nkrumah’s reaction to his overthrow.

“I left Accra on 21st February 1966. I was seen off at the airport by most of the leading government and Party officials, and by service chiefs.

I recall the handshakes and the expressions of good wishes from Harlley, Deku, Yakubu, and others.

These men, smiling and ingratiating, had all the time treason and treachery in their minds.

They had even planned my assassination on that day, though they later abandoned the idea.

I remember shaking hands with Major-General Barwah—to be murdered in cold blood three days later when he refused to surrender to the rebel army soldiers.

I little thought then that I would never see him again, or that Zanerigu, Commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment, Kojo Botsio, Kofi Baako and other ministers who were there at the airport, would be shortly seized by renegade soldiers and policemen and thrown into prison.

After a week of so-called “manoeuvres,” the operation began early in the morning of Wednesday, 23rd February 1966 when the garrison at Kumasi, numbering 600 men, was ordered to move southwards to Accra.

On the way, the convoy of some 35 vehicles was met and halted by the two arch-traitors Colonel Emmanuel Kwesi Kotoka, Commander of the Second Infantry Brigade Group, and Major Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa of the Second Brigade.

Kotoka had only recently been put in charge of the Kumasi garrison, and I had not yet confirmed his appointment.

Kotoka, Commander of the Second Infantry Brigade Group, and Major Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa of the Second Brigade.

Kotoka had only recently been put in charge of the Kumasi garrison, and I had not yet confirmed his appointment.

Afrifa was left in command while Kotoka went to Accra to report progress to Commissioner of Police, John Willie Kofi Harlley and to find some soldier better known than himself to be the nominal head of the revolt.

The man chosen was Major-General Ankrah even though the conspirators had thought so little of his abilities than they had not previously troubled to consult him?

He was, however, one of the few officers who had held even the rank of major in colonial days and had seen service in the world war if only as a quartermaster.

In the Congo he had shown some bravery and, at least, routine ability and I had decorated him for his services but essentially he was of mediocre calibre.

He held the post of second in command in the armed forces after independence through seniority, not ability.

He would not have been appointed even to this post but for the death shortly before of another senior officer.

In 1965, I retired him. Undoubtedly, it was his lack of understanding of what was going on around him which recommended him as a figure-head to those manipulating the ‘coup’.

The troops were then told that I intended sending them to fight in Vietnam and in Rhodesia, and that I had deserted Ghana taking with me £8 million.

There was, they were told, no government left in Ghana, and it was their duty to assume control of the country to maintain law and order.

Already, it was said, Russian planes were landing on a secret airs rip in northern Ghana.

Furthermore a secret tunnel had been made from Flagstaff House, the presidential residence, to Accra airport, and for days Russians had been arriving.

The only way to save Ghana, and to avoid being sent to fight in Vietnam, the troops were told, was to take Flagstaff House.

Several days after the military seizure of power, Kotoka and Afrifa appeared on Ghana TV congratulating themselves on their easy success.

One remark stood out unmistakable and clear: “And you know, we didn’t find any Russians at all— not one! Nor could we find any trace of that tunnel.” This was followed by peals of laughter at the poor soldiers who had believed their story.

The first object of the military operation was to force the surrender of Major-General Barwah, Army Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, who was in command of the Ghana Army in the absence from the country of the Chief of Defence Staff. General Aferi.

At the same time, Brigadier Hasan, Head of Military Intelligence, and Colonel Zanerigu. Commander of the Presidential Guard Regiment, and Owusu-Sekyere, former head of the C.I.D. and in charge of the Special Branch, were to be arrested.

This stage of the operation was badly bungled. Hasan was arrested, but Zanerigu, when confronted, escaped through a window of his house and drove to Flagstaff House to warn the Presidential Guard Regiment.

Barwah could not be intimidated. Woken from his sleep in the early hours of the morning of the 24th by the arrival of Kotoka and some 25 men, he courageously refused either to join the traitors or to surrender.

Thereupon, Kotoka shot him dead at point-black range in cold blood in the presence of his wife and children.

The seven security officers who were stationed at Barwah’s house were also murdered on the spot on Kotoka’s orders.

Kotoka subsequently boasted of his killing of Barwah but said because he was protected by a “juju” he was able to catch the bullets which Barwah fired in his defence and to throw them back at him.

When the counter coup of April 1967 took place Kotoka’s “magic” could not save him.

Unlike Barwah, he surrendered without protest or struggle to those who had captured him at his headquarters.

His “juju” did not prevent him being shot in his turn. Barwah’s murder was one of the most disgraceful and ghastly crimes ever committed in Ghana’s history.

In an attempt to wipe the blood from their hands the so-called N.L.C.‘ gave Barwah and the security officers a military burial a few days later.

What a mockery, and what hypocrisy! Yet these terrible, cold-blooded murders were only the first of many which occurred on 24th February and during subsequent days.

They set the tone, as it were, of the whole operation which was characterised throughout by cowardice, bloodshed and criminal stupidity.

By 6 a.m. on the 24th, the Accra police, acting on Harlley’s orders, had rounded up most of the ministers and other key political figures, and fighting had broken out at Flagstaff House between members of the Presidential Guard Regiment and rebel army units.

There were about thirty members of the Guard Regiment at Flagstaff House when the alarm was raised.

These were soon joined by others who managed to slip in by a back entrance to reinforce their comrades.

Although heavily outnumbered they successfully held up the rebel detachment sent to seize the Ghana radio station a short distance from Flagstaff House.

Only eight of the 124 detailed for this operation managed to get through.

These captured the radio station, apparently without incident, and at 6 a.m. Kotoka arrived to broadcast that the army and police had taken over the government of Ghana.

The announcement was premature. At 7 a.m. resistance was actually increasing at Flagstaff House, as the defenders, less than a hundred of them, fought fiercely back against some 600 rebel troops.

By this time a battalion in Accra under Ocran had joined them, not knowing what the fighting was all about.

Thus the rebels were able to gain control of the airport, cable office, radio station, and all the approach roads to Accra.

Kotoka had established a combined H.Q. with the police at Police Headquarters, and from there the order was given for the 2nd Battalion to go into action at Flagstaff House.

The Guard Regiment fought on, though their position was now-hopeless.

The outside walls of Flagstaff House had been open, and the defenders had retreated behind the second gate. Still they refused to surrender.

It was only after the rebels threatened to blow up the family residence at Flagstaff House in which my wife and three young children were sheltering that they finally gave in.

The fierce fighting at Flagstaff House at this time was in striking contrast to the failure at the time of the April 1967 counter-coup of Kotoka’s bodyguard to defend his headquarters.

He had made Flagstaff House into a strong point from which he commanded the army.

Yet when it was attacked by a small detachment of some 25 men the garrison immediately surrendered as did that of the Broadcasting Station which was also only attacked by a force of similar size.

Again a small group of soldiers, not more than 50 in all, were sufficient to capture the Castle at Osu from which the “N.L.C.” conducted their government.

Ankrah the Chairman’ of the “N.L.C.” was the first of its defenders to run away, jumping over the Castle wall, plunging into the sea and wading down the shore.”

Did you know that this Nigerian actor, Jimmy Odukoya is a pastor?

Did you know that the vibrant Nigerian actor, Jimmy Odukoya, is not only a scene-stealer on screen but also takes the stage in a completely different arena as a pastor.

In September 2023, Jimmy Odukoya assumed the role of senior pastor at the Fountain of Life Church, succeeding his late father, Taiwo Odukoya, who founded the church and passed away at the age of 67 in the United States on August 7, 2024.

As the first son of the late cleric and his deceased first wife, Bimbo Odukoya, Jimmy’s transition from the silver screen to the pulpit signifies a significant shift.

The announcement of his new role was made during a Sunday church service.

A pastor at The Fountain of Life Church, Rotimi Okpaise, revealed that the succession plan had been discussed with the board of trustees (BoT) by the late Pastor Odukoya before his demise.

The BoT unanimously elected Jimmy as the senior pastor and chairperson of the board.

  • Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle worsened Ghanaians’ resentment towards NPP – IMANI Africa

Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle worsened Ghanaians’ resentment towards NPP – IMANI Africa

President Akufo-Addo’s recent reshuffle failed to significantly impact the positive sentiments surrounding the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as per data from IMANI Africa’s Public Understanding and Literacy for Sentiment and Election (PULSE).

According to the report obtained by JoyNews, the reshuffle appeared to generate more negative sentiments towards the NPP.

Covering the period from February 11 to February 26, 2024, the report revealed that while both party candidates experienced an increase in purely negative sentiments, the NPP witnessed a higher percentage rise – from around 21% to just over 28%.

This marked a 7% increase in negative sentiment compared to the NDC’s approximately 4% increment during the same period.

The report suggested that, overall, more people harbored negative feelings about both parties, with the NPP receiving more mentions and a growing negative sentiment.

Despite the reshuffle, the Periodic Social Media Sentiment Analysis Report published in March indicated that the NPP continued to lead in social media mentions.

“The inference here is that generally more people feel negative about both parties, with NPP however having more mentions and more growing negative sentiment”, it added.

The report noted that the NPP’s dominant presence on social media might be due to being the ruling party, with more commentators focusing on their policies and the messages of their presidential candidate than those of the NDC.

The data also revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama experienced an 8.27% reduction in negative sentiments during the observed period. Additionally, his reach on non-social media web sources decreased by 6.78%, indicating a significant drop.

“while there was the ministerial reshuffle during the period, the gap in mentions and social reach was nevertheless still dominant. The NPP is probably being mentioned more as the ruling party with more social media commentators putting their policies forward, as well as the current messages of their presidential candidate under the spotlight, more than they are doing with the candidate of the NDC.”

    Background:
On February 14, President Akufo-Addo announced a ministerial reshuffle, the first major overhaul since assuming office in January 2017.

The reshuffle involved the removal and reassignment of ministers, including Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Roads Minister Kwame Amoako-Atta, and Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu.

  • Some tourists may find Ghana unattractive if anti-LGBTQ+ bill becomes a law – Egyapa Mercer

The designated Minister of Tourism, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, foresees repercussions on Ghana’s tourism industry if the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (Anti-LGBTQ Bill) is approved.

Speaking before Parliament’s vetting committee on March 5, Mercer highlighted the potential deterrence for visitors due to the bill, emphasizing its impact on the country’s cultural identity.

Despite these concerns, Mercer suggests that promoting domestic tourism could alleviate the potential decline in international tourist arrivals.

He stressed the importance of effectively marketing Ghana to both citizens and foreign tourists to sustain tourism growth.

Regarding the bill’s possible effect on Ghana’s attractiveness, Mercer acknowledges varying perspectives on lifestyle choices within the cultural setting.

He emphasized the need to strategically promote Ghana and navigate the law, especially if the President assents to it.

Mr Mercer asserted that, “All I can say is that it definitely will have an impact one way or the other. Some people who believe that lifestyle should be allowed everywhere may find Ghana unattractive. Some people who believe in our culture would find Ghana an attractive place.”

The Tourism Minister-designate underscores the significance of marketing efforts to encourage people to visit Ghana, particularly by promoting domestic tourism. He believes this approach can address potential shortfalls or issues arising from decreased interest due to the new law.

On February 28, Parliament passed the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, penalizing LGBTQ sexual acts and promoting rights of non-conventional identities. While some welcome the bill, concerns about discrimination and constitutional freedoms have been raised by organizations like CHRAJ.

Sam George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, argues that the bill aligns with the 1992 constitution, countering the concerns raised. The Finance Ministry advises against President Akufo-Addo signing the bill, citing potential financial challenges, including the risk of losing over $3 billion in World Bank funding for various programs and projects.

In response, President Akufo-Addo reassures the international community of Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights. He highlights the ongoing legal challenge at the Supreme Court and assures that no action will be taken by the government on the bill until a decision is reached.

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill poses threat to Ghana’s tourism – Egyapa Mercer

The designated Minister of Tourism, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (Anti-LGBTQ Bill) on Ghana’s tourism industry if it receives presidential assent.

During his appearance before Parliament’s vetting committee on March 5, Mr. Mercer pointed out that the enactment of the bill, while reflective of Ghana’s cultural identity, could dissuade certain individuals from visiting the country, thereby affecting tourism.

However, he suggested that promoting domestic tourism, encouraging citizens to explore their own country, could help mitigate any decline in international tourist arrivals.

Mr Mercer emphasized the importance of effectively marketing Ghana to both its citizens and foreign tourists to sustain tourism growth.

“I mean our culture is our culture, ultimately. And so if people want to experience our culture, it really matters whether we are opposed to a certain lifestyle within our cultural setting. But it all comes down to how you promote Ghana and position ourselves within the law, that is if the President assents to it,” he said.

While acknowledging the potential impact of the bill on tourism, Mercer highlighted the need to carefully promote Ghana and position the country within the legal framework, particularly if the President approves the bill.

He noted that individuals with diverse opinions on lifestyle choices might find Ghana either attractive or unattractive based on the cultural setting.

“I mean our culture is our culture, ultimately. And so if people want to experience our culture, it really matters whether we are opposed to a certain lifestyle within our cultural setting. But it all comes down to how you promote Ghana and position ourselves within the law, that is if the President assents to it,” he said.

Mr Mercer added “All I can say is that it definitely will have an impact one way or the other. Some people who believe that lifestyle should be allowed everywhere may find Ghana unattractive. Some people who believe in our culture would find Ghana an attractive place.”

“….We are encouraging people to visit our country as opposed to others. If you promote domestic tourism, that will then help us to deal with whatever shortfalls or issues that may arise from some lack of interest because of this law,” Mr Mercer added.

The Tourism Minister-designate underscored the significance of marketing efforts in encouraging people to visit Ghana, addressing any potential issues arising from the bill.

He expressed optimism that promoting domestic tourism could help overcome challenges posed by a potential decrease in interest due to the new law.

The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill was passed by Parliament on February 28, criminalizing LGBTQ sexual acts and advocating penalties for those promoting non-conventional sexual or gender identities.

Despite public support for the bill, concerns have been raised by entities such as CHRAJ, citing potential discrimination against individuals and infringement on constitutional freedoms. The Finance Ministry has advised President Akufo-Addo against signing the bill, citing potential financial challenges, including the loss of funding from the World Bank.

In response, President Akufo-Addo reassured the international community of Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights. He noted that the bill is facing legal challenges at the Supreme Court, and until a decision is reached, no action will be taken by the government on the private Member’s bill.

Koforidua set for 67th Independence Day celebration – Regional minister

The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, has disclosed ongoing preparations for the upcoming 67th Independence Day celebrations in Koforidua, emphasizing the thorough arrangements in place to ensure the success of the event.

In an interview with JoyNews on March 5, just before the scheduled celebration on Wednesday, Acheampong highlighted the extensive rehearsals conducted over the past weeks, with the final one taking place the previous day.

He assured that not only are the contingents ready, but the designated venue for the event is also fully prepared.

Acknowledging the potential influx of people into the town and the resulting heavy traffic, the minister mentioned that the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service would strategically deploy personnel to manage the situation at crucial points.

“We have been rehearsing for the past weeks. Yesterday was our final rehearsal day with all the contingents on parade. That aside, the ground where we are going to host this event is also ready.”

Themed “Our Democracy, Our Pride,” the Independence Day celebration on March 7 is anticipated to draw attention to Koforidua, with Acheampong expressing enthusiasm about the region being the hosting location.

He believes that the event will not only attract more people to Koforidua but also contribute to promoting the city as a desirable travel destination.

Addressing the anticipated challenges, Acheampong assured the public that a dedicated health team would be on standby to promptly respond to any emergencies that may arise during the celebration.

“Most people might have already heard of Koforidua, but with the coming into town for the celebration, it is going to bring more people…and it is going to help promote Koforidua,” he said.

Ghana’s Constitution should guide Akufo-Addo on assenting anti-LGBTQI bill – Egyapa Mercer

The nominee for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has expressed his expectation that President Akufo-Addo would adhere to the constitution and make a decision in accordance with the law concerning the anti-LGBTQI bill.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, March 5, he acknowledged the potential impact on Ghana’s appeal to certain groups but emphasized the dual nature of the consequences.

Egyapa Mercer stated,”Yes, it’s likely that it may impact Ghana’s attractiveness to some segments of people who feel strongly about the law and its passage. It may also inure to our benefits as well for people who feel strongly that the passage of the law is right. So, it cuts both ways, there will be some wins and losses. And that will be my position on the passage of the law.”

When prompted about the advice he would offer the president, he emphasized a balanced consideration, stating, “I will tell the president to weigh both sides. Obviously, the president is operating within certain social construct of the constitution, and I will expect him to follow the constitution and arrive at a decision the law enjoins him to arrive.”

Parliament passed the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-gay Bill, on February 28. President Akufo-Addo subsequently urged stakeholders to await the Supreme Court‘s ruling on a constitutional challenge filed by a concerned citizen before taking further action.

The President emphasized the importance of holding off on any action until the court’s decision in a statement posted on Facebook by the Director of Communication at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, on March 4.

  • We will comment on anti-LGBTQ+ bill after it becomes a law – IMF

We will comment on anti-LGBTQ+ bill after it becomes a law – IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that it will provide comments on the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill after it is officially signed into law.

The IMF states that its evaluation will specifically focus on the economic and financial consequences of the legislation.

In a released statement, the IMF emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion as integral values. “We cannot comment on a bill that has not yet been signed into law and whose economic and financial implications we have yet to assess.”

The institution underscores its internal policies prohibiting discrimination based on personal characteristics, including gender, gender expression, or sexual orientation.

“Diversity and inclusion are values that the IMF embraces.”

“Our internal policies prohibit discrimination based on personal characteristics, including but not limited to gender, gender expression, or sexual orientation. Like institutions, diverse and inclusive economies flourish,” the statement from the Fund added.

The IMF asserts that diverse and inclusive economies thrive, aligning with its principles.

This statement follows the recent passage of the bill by Ghanaian lawmakers on March 28, with support from both the ruling party and the opposition.

The legislation aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities, along with their promotion, advocacy, and funding.
