Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie to contest Effiduase Asokore seat for the second time

Achieving another milestone, Dr. Ayew Afriyie, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, has gone unopposed in his constituency.

Effiduase Asokore, once known for its contentious primaries, now experiences newfound peace under Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s dynamic leadership.

Closing the nomination period on December 25, he stood as the sole candidate, receiving overwhelming endorsements from high-profile personalities, including Chiefs and religious leaders. This achievement follows his stellar coordination of activities during the DMB Campaign in the region.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie, widely expected to lead the party’s national campaign, has successfully transformed Effiduase Asokore into a symbol of stability and positive change since his election as MP.

Earlier this year, President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Ayew Afriyie for his crucial role in the success of the Kumawu by-election, where the NPP retained its seat.

Before the demise of the former MP for Kumawu, Philip Basoah, internal issues had marred the party.

The council nominated Dr. Ayew Afriyie to mend the cracks and ensure effective organization.

President Akufo-Addo commended him for his organizational skills throughout the electioneering period, acknowledging his efforts from the planning stages to the day of the polls.

Woman loses UK job after bragging on social media

A young Nigerian woman, known as Akorede on TikTok (@korrxss), has faced an unexpected turn of events after sharing news of her employment with the UK-based luxury department store, Harrods, on social media.

In a video that gained attention, she enthusiastically discussed her upcoming job at Harrods, expressing excitement about interacting with “the richest of the rich” and offering tips for getting hired.

“I’m dealing with the richest of the rich, who are you dealing with [giggles]?

“Let me know if you want tips on how to get in.”

However, her joy was short-lived, as she later revealed in another video that she had been terminated even before starting her first shift.

Expressing disappointment, Akorede speculated that someone may have forwarded the video to the company, resulting in her abrupt dismissal.

In her own words, “I got fired! Before I even did my first shift, I got fired. Someone must have sent the video ‘cos I don’t know how they must have found it. I took that video after I attended my induction; I’ve not even attended my first shift. That was really sad. I learnt a really valuable lesson; don’t ever tell good news to people or the internet, keep it to yourself. Upon reflection, that was kind of a shitty video; I was just joking and was just excited.”

I will show you there is a woman who is more than a man – Hawa Koomson tells NDC’s Joseph Yammin, Mustapha Gbande

Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has boldly asserted her preparedness to confront any adversaries advocating violence in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In response to the provocative statements from National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, Joseph Yammin and Mustapha Gbande, Hawa Koomson issued a direct challenge for a face-off in Kasoa, emphasizing that true courage is demonstrated in actions, not mere rhetoric.

Dismissing claims of being inherently violent, Koomson clarified that her past actions were driven by self-defense in the face of attacks from the NDC.

“I am happy to respond. Mustapha Gbandi should be warned, he should leave me out of his mouth, he and his Yammin.

“They know me and I know them, if he thinks ranting on radio is what is manliness, he should forget it. Manliness is shown on the grounds. If he likes he should meet me at Kasoa. He and Joseph Yammin should meet me at Kasoa, I will show them that there is a woman who is more than a man. They should meet me in Kasoa if they believe they are prepared,” she stated.

Refusing to be intimidated, she asserted her commitment to defending herself against any potential assaults from the opposition in the future.

Her resolute stance comes in the wake of threats and calls for NDC members to arm themselves during the 2024 elections, a move she considers unacceptable.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into Gbande’s statements, considering the potential for incitement to violence.

Hawa Koomson’s unwavering demeanor not only underscores her readiness for the political battleground but also highlights the tense and contentious atmosphere as the nation gears up for the crucial electoral process in 2024.

  • NDC govt will revoke Akufo-Addo’s GHC100 emission tax – Asuogyaman MP

NDC govt will revoke Akufo-Addo’s GHC100 emission tax – Asuogyaman MP

The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has announced that the upcoming NDC government, John Mahama, intends to eliminate the GHC100 yearly emission tax introduced by the current Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administration.

Nyarko revealed that despite the minority caucus’s attempt to block the tax, the majority’s numerical advantage allowed its passage.

Addressing commercial motorcyclists in Fintey, Osiabura, and Asikuma after providing free fuel for Christmas, Nyarko criticized the tax as insensitive and obnoxious.

He assured that President Mahama and the NDC would eliminate the GHC100 tax on petrol and diesel engines, including motorbikes.

The MP highlighted the expected positive impact on living standards through the implementation of a 24-hour economy by the next NDC government, scheduled to begin in 2025.

The recently passed Emissions Levy Bill imposes a GHC100 annual fee on petrol and diesel vehicle owners starting January 2024. The aim is to promote eco-friendly energy sources and offset carbon emissions.

The tax faced opposition from the Minority in Parliament, who labeled it a ‘wusie tax’ that could worsen citizens’ economic challenges.

While the government emphasizes climate-positive actions, the move has sparked debates over its potential impact on various sectors, including commercial vehicles, private vehicles, ambulances, ‘okadas,’ and ‘aboboyaas.’

If the bill receives presidential assent, companies will also be required to pay GH₵100 per tonne of carbon dioxide emission.

The tax initiative aligns with broader environmental goals, as evidenced by the government’s decision to apply a zero-VAT rate on imported electric vehicles in the 2024 budget.

Finance Minister Ofori-Atta previously outlined plans to expand the Environmental Excise Duty to cover plastic packaging, industrial emissions, and vehicle emissions, showcasing a comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship.

  • ECG to invest GHS9m in infrastructure, others for Volta and Oti Regions

ECG to invest GHS9m in infrastructure, others for Volta and Oti Regions

The Regional Manageress for Volta and Oti at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, has unveiled plans for a substantial investment of over GH¢9 million Ghana Cedis in infrastructure and logistics in the Volta and Oti regions.

This strategic investment aims to enhance service delivery in the regions by the year 2024.

Speaking to reporters, Jatoe-Kaleo outlined that the allocated funds would be dedicated to repairing essential electrical infrastructure and enhancing logistical systems, with the primary objective of improving overall service delivery.

She characterized 2023 as a year of innovation for the company.

Highlighting the company’s commitment to ensuring a reliable power supply, Jatoe-Kaleo cited initiatives such as the ECG power app and Operation Fix Bill, Pay the Bill.

In 2023, the company undertook projects amounting to GH¢3.2 million Ghana Cedis, including transformer injections, upgrades, and extending power lines to areas without electricity.

Jatoe-Kaleo acknowledged a revenue loss of GH¢2.2 million Ghana Cedis due to the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam, affecting the bulk supply point at Sogakope and disrupting power supply to affected communities.

According to Jatoe-Kaleo, the infusion of funds aligns with ECG’s vision to address key areas for improvement, ensuring a more robust and reliable power supply.

She emphasized that the Volta region is fortunate to benefit from a special project, with contracts signed for major projects in Sogakofe, Kadjebi, and Akatsi.

The projects involve contractors setting up substations and switching stations, with payment to be made after completion and handover to ECG.

“So for the Volta region alone this year we have been able to complete a number of projects and in totality this has caused the company about GH¢3.2 million Ghana cedis. Next year we intend to do more and the project that we have earmarked for next year will be at least GH¢9 million Ghana cedis”, She said.

“Volta region should I say is lucky or fortunate to be selected as one of the regions to benefit from a special project where some contracts have been signed with contractors who will come in with their own resources and capital, set up some sub stations and switching stations. They will complete it, hand over to us and we will pay them later. And for the Volta region we have four major projects in Sogakofe, Kadjebi and Akatsi”, she added.

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Organiser, Joseph Yammin, has affirmed that the party is prepared to protect ballots in the 2024 general election through any necessary means.

Mr Yammin emphasized that the NDC’s experience of assault, rigging, and intimidation in the 2020 elections will not be repeated, and any such actions will be countered.

In an interview on Okay FM, Mr Yammin stated, “Do you think we are going into the election to clap for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia? We are going to win the election and if winning the election means that we have to protect ourself, we are going to do that.

“We are not going into the election to watch on for Bawumia to become president. We are going to tell Ghanaians to make Mahama president because he is the only person that can save this nation.

“We are going to vote and if it calls that we have to also protect the ballot boxes, we are going to do that, whatever means we need to protect the ballot boxes, we are telling you and telling everybody listening to you that we will do it.

“No matter the intimidation, no matter what. We will not sit aloof. The palms that were used to slap people in 2020 we also have some and we don’t just use ours to eat fufu, we can also slap someone,”

Mr Yammin’s remarks follow a police statement announcing an investigation into a similar statement made by the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Mustapha Gbandi.

The police deemed Gbandi’s call for NDC supporters to be armed at polling stations as potential incitement.

In response, Yammin defended Gbandi’s position and criticized the police for not addressing incidents of electoral intimidation and violence by the ruling New Patriotic Party against the NDC.

He emphasized that the NDC will protect its ballots if the police cannot guarantee a free, fair, and transparent election.

  • Productivity can be boosted by reducing taxes to compete on a global scale – GUTA to govt

Productivity can be boosted by reducing taxes to compete on a global scale – GUTA to govt

President of The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr Joseph Obeng, has called on the government to institute fair and equitable tax policies benefiting all citizens.

Speaking at a national stakeholders forum on tax equity in Ghana in Accra, themed “Promoting Tax Equity In Ghana – The Role Of Key Stakeholders,” Dr Obeng expressed concerns about the existing taxation system, administered by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), creating disparities and hindering compliance.

He criticized the unequal tax rates, where some businesses pay 22%, others 4%, and some are exempted based on a GH¢200,000 threshold, deeming it unfair.

Dr Obeng highlighted the consumer’s discretion in purchasing, suggesting that those paying higher VAT (22%) face a disadvantage due to higher pricing, while those exempted sell at more affordable prices, enjoying better sales.

Dr Obeng urged the government to restructure the Value Added Tax (VAT) policies for full compliance, emphasizing the need to reduce taxes to enhance competitiveness globally.

He advocated for artisans, carpenters, mechanics, tailors, and electricians to contribute to taxes for increased revenue.

“The consumer has the discretion of buying what he or she wants, the one paying 22 per cent VAT and those paying 4 per cent VAT stand at a disadvantage since their goods are likely to be priced high while those not paying any VAT at all sell at affordable prices and are able to make good sales.

“To increase productivity, we must reduce taxes to compete with other developed countries,” he said.

He stressed that taxing a few more than their output results in low revenue and called for widening the tax net to cover businesses that were previously exempt. Dr Obeng urged innovative approaches to encourage more people to fulfill their tax obligations, avoiding discrimination.

Dr Alex Ampaabeng, Senior Programmes Officer at the International Budget Partnership (IBP), emphasized that the current tax system discourages a significant portion of the population from paying taxes.

He called for government programs and systems that promote equal tax payments and encouraged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to advise and engage stakeholders for fair and equitable taxation.

Mr Ampaabeng expressed concerns about taxing the poor and needy, proposing the adoption of effective digital taxation. He urged the government to collaborate with ride-hailing apps like Uber, Bolt, and Yango to ensure tax payments and enhance cybersecurity.

The forum focused on discussions about collaborative efforts among stakeholders to promote tax equity in Ghana, fostering civil society relationships, and identifying priority areas for CSOs to impact tax equity efforts in the country.

A President’s veto power must be used judiciously and within defined limits – Srem Sai

A private legal practitioner, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, has emphasized that the President’s veto powers are not an unrestricted authority to settle political or personal scores.

This statement follows President Akufo-Addo’s rejection of several bills, including the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill on Witchcraft, another on Death Penalty, and the Armed Forces Amendment Bill, citing a violation of Article 108 of the Constitution.

Dr. Justice Srem Sai, commenting on the matter, explained that the President’s veto power is applicable only when seeking changes or amendments to specific provisions of a bill.

If the President has other concerns about a bill, he must use established mechanisms for enforcing the Constitution, as the veto power is not a blank check for settling political or personal scores.

He highlighted that the President’s purported veto should be limited to the content of the bill, and in this case, the President is not seeking to change any provisions but is solely exercising the veto because the bill originated from an MP (Hon. Francis Sosu) rather than from him (President Akufo Addo).

  • The 10 most expensive cities in the world

The 10 most expensive cities in the world

In news that won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been feeling the pinch, the global cost of living crisis is far from over, particularly impacting big-city dwellers.

According to the annual Worldwide Cost of Living Index published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the average cost of living rose by 7.4% this year, with grocery prices experiencing the fastest increase.

Although this is slightly lower than the 8.1% jump recorded in the same survey in 2022, the numbers remain significantly higher than “historic trends.”

On a positive note, utility prices, the fastest-rising category in the 2022 survey, showed the least amount of inflation this time around.

The slowdown in price increases is attributed to the waning of supply chain issues since China lifted its Covid-19 restrictions in late 2022. However, grocery prices continue to rise as retailers pass on higher costs to consumers.

“We expect inflation to continue to decelerate in 2024, as the lagged impact of interest-rate rises starts affecting economic activity, and in turn, consumer demand,” stated Upasana Dutt, Head of Worldwide Cost of Living at EIU. Dutt also warned of the upside risks of armed conflict and extreme weather, stating that further escalations of the Israel-Hamas war could drive up energy prices, while a greater-than-expected impact from El Niño could push up food prices even further.

The increase in living costs has made many cities more expensive to live in, with Singapore and Zurich (Switzerland) topping the list as the most expensive cities in the world. Singapore tied with New York for first place last year but slipped to third this year. Zurich, which jumped from sixth place on last year’s list, was attributed to the strength of the Swiss Franc along with high prices of groceries, household goods, and recreation.

Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Paris, Tel Aviv, Geneva, and San Francisco also featured in the top 10 most expensive cities. Notably, Russian cities Moscow and St. Petersburg experienced sharp drops in the ranking, and Damascus, Syria, remained the world’s cheapest city.

The survey, which excluded Venezuela’s Caracas due to a significant rise in prices, covered 173 major cities, comparing more than 400 individual prices across 200 products and services.

Following an attack by six armed robbers who blocked the Gomoa Potsin – Awomre Road in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, one person is currently receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

The assailants targeted passengers, robbing over 20 vehicles on their way to Agona Swedru.

The robbers barricaded the road and forcibly stopped each vehicle, robbing them one by one.

A driver who failed to comply with their demands was shot, as reported by a police source. The incident occurred on Sunday, December 24, 2023, around 9 PM.

The immediate past Assembly Woman for the Pamfokrm Electoral Area, Abena Adadaizua, confirmed the incident when speaking to Kasapa News reporter Yaw Boagyan.

She highlighted that despite seeking assistance, police officers at Gomoa Dominase and its surroundings failed to respond promptly due to a lack of access to vehicles.

In response to the incident, Abena Adadaizua urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide the Gomoa Dominase District Police with vehicles to enhance their ability to combat armed robberies on the road.

Minister of State at the Finance Ministry and incumbent Member of Parliament for Karaga Constituency in the Northern Region, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has submitted his nomination for re-election, emphasizing his candidacy on a robust track record.

As the sole candidate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primaries for Karaga Constituency, Dr. Amin Adam highlighted, “I successfully filed my nomination to seek re-election as NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Karaga Constituency. I had the privilege of being the sole Aspirant to have filed my nomination. My decision to seek re-election is based on a solid record of unprecedented development in the constituency’

In the 2020 general elections, Dr. Amin Adam made history by becoming the first NPP candidate to secure the Karaga parliamentary seat since its creation in 2004.

He achieved this victory by garnering 28,335 votes, surpassing the incumbent MP from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhassan Sualihu Dandawaa, who had held the seat since 2012 and received 19,690 votes.

His electoral success was unexpected, given the constituency’s historical loyalty to the NDC.

Since taking office, Dr. Amin Adam has played a pivotal role in launching numerous projects in health, education, and other sectors, establishing himself as the frontrunner for the 2024 elections.

  • Abu Jinapor to contest Damongo seat for the second time

Abu Jinapor to contest Damongo seat for the second time

The Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency, also the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, is poised for a second uncontested run as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate in the Damongo Constituency.

As of the closure of nominations on Monday, December 25, 2023, Mr. Jinapor, the incumbent MP, stood as the sole nominee in the constituency.

The Damongo Constituency, situated in the Savannah Region, has traditionally been a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1993.

However, in the 2020 elections, Mr. Jinapor secured a surprising victory against the incumbent MP, Adam Mutawakilu, clinching over fifty-four percent (54%) of the valid votes and marking the first NPP victory in the constituency.

Following his election, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, a position he continues to hold.

Nominations for constituencies with sitting MPs opened on December 20, 2023, and across the nation, individuals have filed to challenge incumbent MPs, prompting calls from traditional leaders and stakeholders for the protection of certain MPs.

In a departure from this trend, Mr. Jinapor, at the close of nominations on December 25, 2023, emerged as the sole candidate for the NPP Parliamentary Candidate in Damongo.

This reflects the high confidence the NPP in the constituency places in Mr. Jinapor to retain the seat, despite the traditionally strong NDC presence.

Expressing gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him, Mr. Jinapor affirmed his commitment to collaborating with the party and constituents to secure the NPP’s parliamentary seat and achieve victory for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Constituents lauded Hon. Jinapor for unprecedented development initiatives, including the construction of the MP’s office, an astroturf in Damongo, electricity extension projects, and various infrastructure developments.

Supporters, even from the opposing NDC, expressed confidence in Mr. Jinapor’s ability to continue the constituency’s developmental agenda.

The NPP primaries for MPs are scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2023. According to the party’s constitution, when only one candidate files for the contest at the close of nominations, that candidate is acclaimed on the day of the election.

As such, Mr. Jinapor is affirmed as the undisputed NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Damongo Constituency, poised to face Adam Mutawakilu once again, whom he defeated in the 2020 General Elections.

This will be a “technical knockout” – Henry Quartey says as he submits forms for re-election

The Ayawaso Central Member of Parliament, Henry Quartey, characterized his re-election bid, contested by two others, as a showdown between an excavator and a bicycle.

During the filing of his nomination forms on December 25, 2023, he emphasized the New Patriotic Party’s commitment to democracy while expressing confidence in outclassing his competitors.

Quartey stated,“The NPP thrives on democracy, so, we have not stopped anybody from contesting, however, I want to assure the public that the elections shall be free and fair.

“But I want to say this, by the grace of God, which I serve, this is a race between bicycle and excavator. By the grace of God, this is a technical knockout,” he explained.

Despite initially planning not to seek re-election, Mr Quartey yielded to the insistence of his constituents who obtained nomination forms on his behalf.

He underscored his commitment, noting, “I thought I was going to escape it by not picking the forms, but I was ambushed by the polling station executives and the party, who went ahead to pick the forms for me. I want to put on record that I didn’t pay GHc1 for the forms.”

Sylvester Tetteh, the MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, submitted Quartey’s forms and highlighted the crucial role Quartey plays in parliament.

Mr Tetteh emphasized the unanimous support from the other 13 Greater Accra MPs, aiming to increase NPP seats in the region.

He stated, “We are determined to increase our numbers to 20 seats in Greater Accra, and Henry Quartey is the arrowhead, together with the regional executives to ensure that we maintain the 14 and add additional 6 more seats.”

Mr Quartey, serving as the current Greater Accra Regional Minister, first entered Ghana’s parliament in January 2017.

  • Stable exchange rate alone not enough for economic rebound – Gatsi

Stable exchange rate alone not enough for economic rebound – Gatsi

The Dean of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Business School, Professor John Gatsi, has expressed skepticism about the current state of Ghana’s economy despite President Akufo-Addo’s claim of a rebound.

The professor specifically points to the exchange rate of the cedi to the dollar, currently standing at GHC12.00 to $1.00, as evidence that economic growth is not as robust as suggested.

According to Prof Gatsi, the stability of the exchange rate at this high level does not serve as an indicator of improved economic conditions.

He challenged the notion that Ghanaians should perceive positive economic changes based on the exchange rate alone, especially given the significant increase from GHC6.00 to GHC12.00 within a year.

During an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Show, Prof Gatsi countered President Akufo-Addo‘s assertion that the country’s economy is rebounding.

“You do not just say that because exchange rate has stabilised at the highest level from about GHC6.00 last year to about GHC12.00, so, if it’s stable around GHC12, you don’t use that to tell Ghanaians that things are better for them and things would be better in 2026,” the Finance lecturer told Martin Asiedu Dartey on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Show on December 25.

He argued that even the current inflation and policy rates fail to reflect genuine signs of economic recovery.

The Finance lecturer emphasized that addressing a troubled economy goes beyond statistical improvements.

He stressed that reducing inflation from 54% to 26% or increasing the policy rate from 14% to 30% does not inherently signify a resolution to the country’s challenges, especially when factors like hardship, unemployment, and poverty have doubled.

“When we say an economy has been messed up, and to correct that economy, it doesn’t take inflation reducing from 54% to 26% to indicate that things are better. When policy rate has increased from 14% to 30%. You don’t just look at headline inflation falling to 26% to think that you have solved the problem of the country when hardship, unemployment and poverty have doubled,” Prof Gatsi explained.

In response to the President’s Christmas message, where Akufo-Addo highlighted a relatively stable exchange rate and declining inflation as positive indicators, Prof Gatsi stated that such statements were aimed at providing reassurance to the citizens during the holiday season.

“Fellow Ghanaians, I am particulary glad that our nation has turned the corner following three difficult years, we and indeed, the world have faced. Inflation is being reigned in, we are experiencing a relatively stable exchange rate, and growth in our economy is rebounding.

“We continue to attract investments, domestic and foreign, reinforcing our position as the  gateway to Africa and we remain a beacon of democracy, peace and stability in Africa. The country is not yet completey out of the woods, but there is a growing confidence that with hard work and determination, Ghana will make it and collectively, we will secure our future,” he said in his statement.

President Akufo-Addo continued that, “I remain committed to the mandate you freely gave me. I will use the last year of my stay in office, to do all in my power to continue to help create a free and prosperous nation of opportunities where every Ghanaian child, no matter the circumstances of his or her birth, has a fair chance to strive for a happy and dignified life and realise his or her aspirations.”

“He is giving a Christmas message, so he is only talking to just assure people. So what he is saying is not the reality,” Prof Gatsi stressed.

  • Ratify ILO convention 188 for the future of Ghana’s seas – Fishermen to govt

Ratify ILO convention 188 for the future of Ghana’s seas – Fishermen to govt

Stakeholders within the fishing sector have urged the government to endorse the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Fishing Labour Convention 188 (2007).

President of the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG), Nana Kweigyah, echoing the sentiments of the National Union of Teamsters and General Workers (NUTEG), emphasized that ratifying the convention is crucial to safeguarding the well-being of Ghana’s fishers, who often work in substandard conditions.

Nana Kweigyah made these remarks during the distribution of life jackets to artisan fishers in Akplabanya, Ada West District, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety in Ghana’s artisanal fisheries.

He highlighted that the Convention aims to establish decent working conditions for fishers aboard fishing vessels, encompassing minimum requirements for work, conditions of service, accommodation, food, occupational safety, health protection, medical care, and social security.

The Convention also addresses issues such as rest periods and written work agreements, emphasizing the need for fishing vessels to be constructed and maintained to provide adequate living conditions for fishers.

Nana Kweigyah emphasized that ratification implies a commitment to exerting control over fishing vessels through inspection, reporting, monitoring, complaint procedures, penalties, and corrective measures.

Acknowledging the distribution of life jackets to fishers in Shama and Apam, he urged canoe owners and fishing crews to prioritize safety, including occupational health, at sea.

He announced plans to sustain the initiative promoting life jacket use by supplying canoe owners with life jackets on a credit basis.

Nana Kweigyah appealed to the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MoFAD), and other institutions and non-governmental organizations to provide fishers with personal protective equipment, supporting the overarching goal of enhancing safety at sea.

Desmond Sackey, Secretary General of NUTEG, urged canoe owners to fulfill their duty of providing necessary protective equipment to their crews, citing Section 118 (1) of Act 651 (the Labour Act 2003), which mandates employers to ensure their employees work under satisfactory, safe, and healthy conditions.

Captain Darlington Newton Akrofi, Principal Marine Officer and Head of Search and Rescue at the Ghana Maritime Authority, provided education on safety at sea and demonstrated the proper use of life jackets to fishers.

  • Fishing moratorium to be observed by tuna vessels from January 1

Fishing moratorium to be observed by tuna vessels from January 1

Ghanaian tuna vessels are set to adhere to a fishing moratorium from January 1 to March 13, 2024, aligning with the regulations of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

According to Executive Director of the Blue Economy and Governance Consult, Richster Nii Amarh Amarfio, this closure will specifically impact tuna vessels utilizing Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD), representing a conservative approach to managing tuna and tuna-like species.

Being a contracting partner with ICCAT, Ghana-flagged vessels are obligated to comply with the moratorium.

Although aimed at conserving fish stocks, Mr Amarfio noted that this observance would lead to a temporary scarcity of tuna in the local market and entail some costs for the industry.

The shortage is expected to be prominent after February, affecting local tuna manufacturing companies, with a potential reliance on imported fish in cold stores.

“We pay $135 per gross registered tonnage; so, if the vessel weighs 1000 GRT, you will pay $135000 for the year, and it is divided into quarters.

“If I don’t fish for the first quarter, it means that first quarter will be taken out, but if I decide to fish for the two weeks of that quarter, I have to pay for the full quarter,” he explained.

During this period, tuna vessel operators will incur expenses related to staff, crew, security, and license fees, despite being out of operation.

Taking licenses for the remaining two weeks in March would require payment for the entire quarter, posing financial challenges for operators.

Mr Amarfio explained that their crew and office employees, considered permanent staff, would be paid throughout the closure, maintaining basic salaries and covering social security and taxes.

While tuna vessels are permitted to engage in free-school fishing during the moratorium, Mr Amarfio acknowledged that many would find it economically unfeasible and choose not to participate in such activities.

I’m back again, help me retain the seat – Henry Quartey to Ayawaso Central delegates

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has urged delegates in the Ayawaso Central Constituency to cast overwhelming votes in his favor during the upcoming NPP primaries.

His plea is rooted in the goal of securing the party’s hold on the seat for the 2024 general elections, where he faces competition from Moses Abor, the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP.

Grateful for the continued trust and support of the delegates, Quartey acknowledged their pivotal role in his political journey. He recounted their past endorsement, emphasizing, “I decided not to contest again but you said I should go. Today, I thank you again. In 2020, you contributed and bought the forms on my behalf, and I went unopposed. Today, I was in the office and saw that you’ve made such an offer again. So today I’m here to say I’m back again.”

Henry Quartey, a three-time Member of Parliament, expressed his appreciation by submitting his nomination form at the Ayawaso Central Constituency office in Alajo. During his address to the delegates, he emphasized the importance of their support, urging them, “When you are voting, vote massively for me.”

Creative sector has a lot of talents, but lacks investment – Bawumia

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has underscored the immediate need to prioritize the creative sector and unlock its vast potential.

Despite the abundance of talent, such as singer Asantewaa Aduonum, who is attempting to break the world record for the longest individual singing marathon, the sector’s growth has been hindered by insufficient investment.

During an interview with Citi News at the Akwaaba Village in Accra, where he expressed his support for Aduonum, Dr. Bawumia emphasized, “What is clear to me is that talents exist.

There is a massive amount of talent in the creative arts, but I don’t think we invest sufficiently in the sector.”

“I believe that the returns on the investment could be high for the country because we are looking at job creation, exchange earnings and so on. But I don’t think that we have done sufficient over the years, and we have to pay attention to this sector,” he noted.

The Vice President called on all Ghanaians to rally behind the singer to ensure she breaks the record. He expressed, “What Afua is trying to do is to break a world record and it is not very easy to do. So on a day like this [Christmas day] when everybody is spending time with their families, It could be very lonely and I think that as Ghanaians we should give her all the support and encouragement we can.

“So I think we should give her all the support so I thought I should stop by here and let her know that Ghana is behind her and she should go ahead and break the record.”

“I have been following and I think that she is doing great. I think that Wednesday we will be back here by the grace [of God] and we will be back here to break the record,” he added.

  • This festive season is a dry, dull and boring one – IEA director of research

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has contested President Akufo-Addo’s claim that Ghana’s economy has turned the corner toward recovery.

Despite the government citing indicators like the decline in inflation as signs of recovery, Dr. Kwakye contends that the ongoing Christmas festivities reflect a different economic reality.

In a social media post, he expressed, “This is an Xmas to forget. Dry, dull and boring. Millions of Ghanaians can’t afford even one decent meal as a chicken costs 100gh. Yet we are told inflation is low and the economy has turned the corner. Really? Maybe it’s turned the corner for a few but not the majority.”

Dr. Kwakye’s post follows President Akufo-Addo’s assertions in his 2023 Christmas message, highlighting the recent decline in inflation, a relatively stable exchange rate, and overall economic growth as signals of a rebound.

President Akufo-Addo stated, “We continue to attract investments in our economy both domestic and foreign, reinforcing our position as the gateway to Africa and remain a beacon of democracy, peace, and stability in Africa. The country is not yet completely out of the woods, but there is a growing sense of confidence that with hard work and determination, Ghana will make it, and collectively, we will secure our futures.”

Ghana is not completely out of the woods – IEA

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye,  has cast doubt on President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that Ghana’s economy is on the path to recovery.

Despite the government citing indicators such as a decline in inflation as signs of recovery, Dr. Kwakye argues that the ongoing Christmas festivities reveal a different economic reality.

In a social media post, Dr. John Kwakye, shared his honest thoughts about the current Christmas season.

He described it as one to forget, characterized by a lack of excitement and dullness. Dr. Kwakye pointed out the financial challenges faced by many Ghanaians, emphasizing that a significant number can’t afford even a basic meal, like a chicken that costs 100gh.

Contrary to official statements highlighting economic improvements, Dr. Kwakye questioned whether the claimed turnaround truly benefits everyone.

He suggested that, despite reported progress, a large portion of the population continues to face economic hardships.

“This is an Xmas to forget. Dry, dull, and boring. Millions of Ghanaians can’t afford even one decent meal as a chicken costs 100gh. Yet we are told inflation is low and the economy has turned the corner. Really? Maybe it’s turned the corner for a few but not the majority,”Dr Kwakye’s post read.

Dr. Kwakye’s comments serve as a counterpoint to President Akufo-Addo’s 2023 Christmas message, wherein the President highlighted the recent decline in inflation, a relatively stable exchange rate, and overall economic growth as indicators of a rebound.

President Akufo-Addo stated, “We continue to attract investments in our economy both domestic and foreign, reinforcing our position as the gateway to Africa and remaining a beacon of democracy, peace, and stability in Africa. The country is not yet completely out of the woods, but there is a growing sense of confidence that with hard work and determination, Ghana will make it, and collectively, we will secure our futures.”

‘Dumsor’ will return if NDC comes to power – COP Alex George Mensah

Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has issued a caution to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging vigilance to ensure that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not secure victory in the upcoming 2024 elections.

COP Mensah, who recently filed to contest the parliamentary seat in the Bekwai constituency, emphasized that the NPP is the sole political party with the capability to lead the country towards development.

During an interview on Angel TV, he voiced concerns that an NDC victory could result in regression, specifically referencing the period of ‘dumsor,’ the intermittent power outages that plagued Ghana during the NDC’s previous tenure.

“In this country, if we go out and vote, and power is turned over to those that brought ‘dumsor,’ the country will be heading backwards because the only political party that can help the country is the ruling NPP.

“If we make a mistake and hand over power to the NDC, we will go down back deep into a pit, and the time we will come out of that pit, things will be worse,” he warned.

The retired police commissioner has pledged to contribute to the development of the Bekwai constituency.

Bawumia, Sammi Awuku arrive at Akwaaba Village to support Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon

Vice President Dr. Bawumia and Sammi Awuku, alongside other prominent figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made a spirited appearance at the Akwaaba Village in Accra to express their solidarity with Afua Asantewaa Aduonum.

Afua Asantewaa is on a historic mission to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon.

Brandishing Ghana flags, Dr. Bawumia and NPP leaders enthusiastically joined the cheering crowd, showcasing their unwavering support for Afua Asantewaa Aduonum in her ambitious pursuit.

The accomplished broadcast journalist has set an ambitious goal of four days and nine hours, commencing from December 24, aiming to surpass the existing record held by Indian singer Sunil Waghmare. Waghmare’s impressive singing marathon of 105 hours from March 3 to March 7, 2012, sets a formidable benchmark, with his record standing at an impressive 102 hours.

Upon the arrival of Dr. Bawumia and his entourage at the venue, Asantewaa had already been singing for a day, fourteen hours, and fifty-five minutes.

The presence of these eminent figures not only heightens the event’s excitement but also underscores the widespread support for Aduonum’s quest to etch her name into the prestigious Guinness World Records.

Manasseh manipulated information in ‘The GHS3bn Lie’ exposé – SML

In response to the investigative documentary titled ‘The GH¢3 Billion Lie’ by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure, the Technical Assistant to the Managing Director of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), Richard Marfo, has leveled allegations against the journalist.

Mr Marfo claims that Manasseh deliberately fabricated the contract details presented in the exposé.

Specifically, Mr Marfo emphasized that Manasseh misrepresented key aspects of the contract, particularly the duration, asserting that the actual contract was for five years, not the ten years reported in the documentary.

He accused Manasseh of selectively redacting and manipulating information to create a false narrative, questioning the accuracy and credibility of the investigative piece.

In a categorical denial, SML refuted the claims made in the documentary, challenging the media outfit to produce any contract evidence supporting the allegations.

“Manasseh has had PR works in the public. But we also want to use a little time to clarify some things. The first thing I want to put out there is the context in which Manassseh asks the questions as if he is doing a documentary within the downstream and those are the answers he had.

“The next is that the contract in question was 10 years. What Manasseh did has done a big and deliberate disservice to SML. A contract of five years, he went to the page where it stated 10 years, redacted whatever is in there. You can get this on section 3.1 of the contrat. Look at it carefully even the word contractor, he wrote there, contract. He put this thing out there and claims that that is the contract,” he said this on Joy News programme, which was monitored by GhanaWeb.

“…I am asking, where is that source coming from? We are claiming that Manasseh put those words together and at the right times, we will seek legal redress on those matters.”

Additionally, SML rejected the assertion of receiving $100 million annually from its contract, dismissing these claims as baseless and purely speculative.

Mr Marfo raised questions about the reliability of Manasseh’s sources, indicating the company’s intention to pursue legal action to address the alleged misrepresentation.

The core controversy revolves around the documentary’s claims regarding the Ministry of Finance awarding a substantial contract to SML for monitoring Upstream Petroleum Production and auditing the value chain of Minerals and Metals Resources.

The investigative piece raised concerns about SML’s purported lack of experience in the petroleum industry and questioned payments for services not rendered.

It’s not wise to drive a Landcruiser and stay in a rented house – Archbishop Agyinasare

In a Christmas Eve sermon at the Perez Dome, founder of Perez Chapel International, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, delivered a message urging Christians to remain within their financial means and lead noble lives.

The Archbishop emphasized the importance of celebrating Christmas in a modest manner, discouraging extravagant spending and the use of dubious means to impress others.

During the sermon, he conveyed that even simple items like ‘koobi’ could be used for Christmas celebrations, stressing that it is unnecessary to buy new clothing just because it is the Christmas season.

Drawing parallels to Mary’s contentment with delivering baby Jesus in a manger, he encouraged a similar attitude of contentment and living within one’s means during Christmas celebrations.

Expressing concern about the lack of nobility in contemporary society, the Archbishop highlighted the need for people to avoid overspending, citing examples of individuals driving luxury cars while residing in rented houses.

Sharing personal experiences, he mentioned instances where landlords adjusted rental agreements based on tenants’ spending behaviors.

The Archbishop cautioned against impractical lifestyle choices, such as driving an expensive car while living in a rented residence.

Addressing family issues, he urged married men to treat their wives with respect and avoid humiliating them.

Denouncing the practice of boasting about promiscuous behavior, the Archbishop encouraged men to adopt the nobility of Joseph, who remained silent about Mary’s situation.

He advocated for understanding and peaceful separation in cases where trust is broken in a relationship.

“Unfortunately, there are guys telling others the number of women they have slept with. They think it is pride; they are rather cheap. Joseph didn’t say anything about Mary to people. He was a noble man,” he said.

“I am not saying women must indulge in promiscuity; however, if you are a man and your wife did that and you don’t love her anymore, don’t beat her; let her go in peace,” the Archbishop added.

BoG receives initial $541m tranche of cocoa syndicated loan

The first tranche of the Cocoa Syndicated Loan, amounting to approximately $541 million, has been successfully credited to the Bank of Ghana’s account on December 22, 2023.

This initial inflow represents a significant portion of the overall $800 million loan, with the second tranche of about $200 million scheduled for transfer to the Central Bank’s account in January 2024.

Parliament played a crucial role in advancing the loan process by approving the Trade Facility Agreement for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in November 2023.

The approval was based on the recommendation of the Finance Committee of Parliament, enabling COCOBOD to proceed with finalizing paperwork with participating banks.

Under the agreed-upon terms endorsed by Parliament, COCOBOD will incur an interest rate of nearly 8%, inclusive of the one-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR), currently hovering around 5.3%, along with a margin of 2.65%.

The funds received by the Bank of Ghana will be converted into cedis and subsequently transferred to COCOBOD.

These financial resources are earmarked to support the procurement of cocoa beans from farmers through licensed buying companies for the upcoming 2023/2024 crop season.

This financial injection is expected to have an immediate impact on the Bank of Ghana’s reserves, potentially enhancing its ability to strengthen the cedi. Furthermore, the news of COCOBOD’s collaboration with various banks has already contributed to the stabilization of the cedi in the foreign exchange market.

Let’s avoid insults during campaigns – Abena Osei-Asare tells NPP delegates

Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Abena Osei-Asare has urged for a clean and honorable campaign within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it approaches its parliamentary primaries.

Describing the election as a “family contest,” the Atiwa East lawmaker called on her supporters to avoid both direct and indirect verbal attacks on other aspirants.

She emphasized the importance of running a clean campaign for the party’s success in the 2024 general election.

The governing party will hold its parliamentary primaries across constituencies with sitting MPs on January 27, 2024. This marks the last internal election to select candidates ahead of the general elections.

Osei-Asare, who is highly favored to win the upcoming primaries, stressed the need for all factions to run a clean campaign for the sake of the task ahead for the party in 2024.

“As a family, all factions must recognize that a united front is necessary to confront the task ahead in 2024. I urge you all [my followers] to conduct a clean campaign, avoiding any form of insults,” Osei-Asare stated during a conference meeting on Saturday (23 December).

The conference marked the beginning of Christmas activities in the constituency, an annual tradition where the MP engages with party faithful and residents.

Present at the meeting was the former Eastern Regional Women Organizer of the NPP, Fati, who strongly endorsed the re-election of Abena Osei-Asare as the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East.

Fati emphasized that Osei-Asare’s impeccable track record in the constituency makes her the most suitable candidate to retain the seat for the party in the upcoming parliamentary primaries.

“This is an MP who has resourced majority of constituents and I can attest to that. The massive infrastructure she has initiated are firming up with some completed. I have been serving this party for decades and I know what I am talking about. Abena Osei-Asare is the best candidate to retain this seat.

“I have been chastising most of the sitting MPs regarding infrastructure and I must say you are blessed to have a visionary MP. As you go to and cast your ballots I daresay that it will be politically suicidal for NPP in Atiwa East if she is not retained,” she noted.

Video: Kwame Nkrumah’s Christmas speech while in exile

A viral video of Ghana’s inaugural president, President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, delivered a poignant Christmas message to Ghanaians while in exile in Guinea Conakry following his overthrow by the security forces in 1966.

The recording, retrieved from Radio Guinea’s Voice of the Revolution, captures Nkrumah’s heartfelt sentiments during the festive season, particularly in the aftermath of what he describes as the setback of Ghana’s development and progress.

A video recording available on the YouTube page Talking Africa, titled “Kwame Nkrumah Christmas Day Speech From Exile,” shows Kwame Nkrumah extending warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year despite the challenging circumstances faced by Ghanaians.

Speaking from Conakry over Radio Guinea’s Voice of the Revolution, Nkrumah acknowledged the reflective mood among Ghanaians during the festive occasion, considering the tumultuous events that transpired in the country that year.

“Fellow country men, chiefs and people, comrades and friends. Christmas is here with us again. I am speaking to you in the spirit of the season from Conakry over a radio Guinea’s Voice of the Revolution. In spite of your suffering and humiliation, I wish that you could have a merry christmas and a happy new year.

“This is normally a festive occasion but on this year’s christmas day, Ghaians cannot help reflecting what a fateful year this has been for them. You have seen an unfortunate and sordid chapter in your history. It is a chapter of treachery and betrayal; of greed and hypocrisy; of tint and blunder. It is dark days for Ghana, it is exactly 10 months today, when certain officers in the Ghana Army and Police turned their guns at the very constitution and legal government which they solemnly swore on their honour to protect and defend,” he said.

The ousted leader expresses profound disappointment at the betrayal, emphasizing that those who orchestrated the coup could never have acted in the true interest of the people.

“You know anyone who is capable of such outrageous betrayal of trust, for no reason at all, could never have been motivated by the true interest of the people. Events in Ghana since then have confirmed this beyond any doubt.

“Within 10 short months, the traitors who make up the so-called National Liberation Council, have shown that, it was their morbid lust for money and power and their desire to escape from the just consequences of their corruption and crime which made them commit such despicable act of treason against the State and the people of Ghana. When you look around yourself, their only achievement has been the sordid reversal of Ghana’s development and progress,” he added.

Korle-Bu welcomes seven newborns on Christmas day

Seven infants were welcomed into the world during the early hours of Christmas Day at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra.

The newborns, consisting of two boys, three girls, and a set of twins, arrived between 0006 dawn and 1000 on Monday, December 25.

Out of the seven deliveries, three occurred through Spontaneous Vagina Delivery (SVD), while the remaining three were delivered via Cesarean Sections (CS).

The mothers expressed immense joy, considering the births as their most cherished Christmas gifts.

The first mother, Mrs. Akorfa Glover, aged 30, joyfully welcomed her set of twins at exactly 0005 hours on Christmas Day through SVD. She delivered two healthy baby girls, each weighing 3.2 kilograms (kg) at birth. Mrs. Glover, expressing gratitude, described her babies as “Blessed babies,” as she had conceived them 15 years after marriage, overcoming previous infertility challenges.

Having faced complications during her pregnancy, Mrs. Glover had been under close monitoring at the maternity ward for two weeks. Her water unexpectedly broke on Friday, leading to the early delivery on Christmas Day. She referred to her newborns as “Jesus Babies” and thanked God for the miraculous gift.

Another elated mother, Mrs. Gifty Appiah, shared her surprise as doctors had predicted her baby boy’s due date to be in the first week of January 2024.

However, she went into labor around 10 am on Sunday morning and welcomed her baby at 0800 hours on Christmas Day.

The mothers, surrounded by the warmth of friends and family, expressed their joy, and various companies joined the celebration by sharing gifts with the newborns and their mothers.

“I had some complications during this pregnancy so I was admitted here, at the maternity ward two weeks ago, and I have been under close monitoring, my due date was supposed to be the first week in January, but my water broke on Friday unexpectedly, and little did I know that my babies would be privileged to share a birthday with Jesus Christ, ” she said.
