NPP MPs who supported Alan won’t join his movement – Davis Ansah

Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku Ansah, has stated that the 20-plus New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) who initially supported Alan Kyerematen in the Special Delegates Conference will not rally behind his movement.

Speaking to the media, he stated, “I would not say that political parties do not or will not have differences. There may be differences, I mean factions here and there, people taking sides, forming into a faction and all of that, but the ability to come together in an internal political context shows how strong your party is. And for me, that commitment is there.”

“And I know that over 20 MPs who supported Alan Kyerematen have all resolved that we solemnly believe in the NPP, and we are going to follow the NPP and we are going to represent power again. And we are going to work tirelessly to ensure that the NPP wins power again in 2024. None of the MPs that support Alan Kyerematen will follow him in his movement but we wish him well.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Opoku, who was a supporter of Mr. Kyerematen, has also distanced himself from the latter, who resigned from the NPP to contest the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate.

Affectionately called OPK, Mr. Opoku, in a statement, expressed his disappointment over Kyerematen’s departure from the party, assuring of his unwavering commitment to the NPP and its vision for Ghana.

Mr Kyerematen, addressing a gathering at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel on Monday, September 25, announced his resignation from the NPP and also declared his intention to run for the presidency as an independent candidate.

“I have noted with grave dismay the decision of Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a man whom I have known for the last 17 years of my political life and had the privilege of working closely with, to resign from our party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and contest as an Independent Candidate in the 2024 general elections. The decision is profoundly disappointing. It is a disheartening departure from the principles of party loyalty and unity, which are fundamental to our democratic process.”

“The NPP has always thrived on the strength of its agreement and the collective support of its members. I express my unwavering commitment to the New Patriotic Party and its vision for Ghana. With its proven track record of good governance and development, despite the challenges, I firmly believe that our party, the NPP, remains the best choice to lead our nation forward in the 2024 elections and beyond,” OPK said in a statement,” he stated.

According to sources the deceased was accompanied by another suspect as they seized a Hyundai i10 taxi bearing registration number GE 5718-22 in Nsawam.

These suspects, residents of Nsawam, are said to have a recurring method of engaging taxi drivers from Nsawam and subsequently snatching their vehicles in the Awutu vicinity of the Central Region.

However, the tables turned on this ill-fated occasion when the pair hired a taxi driver from Nsawam and attempted to steal his vehicle near the vicinity of Awutu Bosomabena village.

“They boarded the taxi from Nsawam, but when they got to the Awutu area, one of them told the driver he was picking up some of his belongings. Then, quickly, one of the suspects attacked the driver in the front seat, holding him by the throat.

NPP should be concerned about Alan’s resignation – Political scientist

Political scientist, Dr. Etse Sikanku has expressed concerns over Alan Kyerematen‘s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting potential repercussions for the party due to his decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.

Mr Kyerematen resigned from the NPP after withdrawing from the party’s November presidential primaries, citing irregularities during the super delegates conference.

Dr. Sikanku notes that while Kyerematen may not take all NPP supporters with him, he does have followers who may continue to support him, potentially impacting the NPP’s prospects.

Meanwhile, veteran journalist Paul Adom-Otchere predicts that as the 2024 election campaign intensifies, voters may forget about Kyerematen. Adom-Otchere suggests that if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the NPP’s flagbearer, the election will primarily be a fierce battle between Bawumia and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

“I can tell you that by the time the campaign hits a crescendo, if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the NPP’s candidate, with the kind of campaigning he does, which he’s going to do, when the campaign reaches a crescendo, and it’s John Dramani Mahama versus Dr. Bawumia, people will even forget that Alan Kyerematen is contesting.

“It’s going to be a stiff election, it’s going to be brutally fought. And nobody will remember that there’s a third candidate. I can assure you of that, but we still need time to see how Alan’s campaign will pan out.”

Alan’s stance is unclear; his ministerial tenure was a failure – Democracy Hub’s co-convener

Co-convener of Democracy Hub, Felicity Nelson, has expressed criticism regarding Alan Kyerematen’s decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections under the banner of the Movement for Change.

Mr Kyerematen, a former Trade and Industry Minister, resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on September 25, citing an unfair playing field in the party’s flagbearer race.

He has since announced his intention to contest the 2024 elections as an independent candidate, with a commitment to establish a non-partisan governance structure for national development.

However, Felicity Nelson has raised doubts about Kyerematen’s ability to accomplish his objectives, particularly due to his involvement in the current government and what she perceives as a lackluster performance during his tenure as Trade and Industry Minister.

“I don’t know what Alan stands for, I don’t know what he represents, I think he failed to make a mark as a minister because he was part of this government that we are complaining against and he never took a stand and spoke against the government. So I am sorry if I am struggling to see what it is he is going to provide that is different.”

“Just because you are saying you don’t belong to either NPP or NDC does not necessarily make you an angel,” she said. “That does not mean anything to me. I am asking what Alan’s track record was as a Trade Minister, and what he did to fix our balance of trade deficit. I have been struggling to see what his message was even when he was campaigning to lead the NPP,” she added.

All Alan posters ordered to be removed by NPP leadership in Ashanti Region

Following Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on September 25, 2023, the leadership of the NPP in the Ashanti Region has issued a directive to all regional chairpersons in the 47 constituencies.

They are instructed to promptly remove all promotional materials associated with Kyerematen, including posters, banners, and campaign paraphernalia, from their party offices.

In a memorandum dated the same day and signed by Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, the party stressed that Kyerematen’s promotional materials are no longer relevant within the party offices due to his resignation.

The directive emphasized the need for fairness in removing these items from the party’s offices, given Kyerematen’s decision to forfeit his membership.

Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP came a month after he withdrew from the party’s flagbearer race. He has since announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate.

Mr Kyerematen explained during a media engagement on Monday that his decision aims to provide the NPP an opportunity to partake in a government of national unity, while reaffirming his commitment to the founding principles of the party.

Spotify CEO confirms no ban on AI-generated music

Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, has revealed that there will be no complete ban on AI-generated content within the music streaming platform.

Earlier this year, the platform removed a track featuring AI-cloned voices of Drake and The Weeknd.

In an interview with the BBC, Ek states that there are valid applications of AI in music creation. However, he emphasizes that AI should not be used to impersonate human artists without their consent.

He anticipates that the debate over AI in music will continue for many years. Ek categorizes AI use into three “buckets”:

Tools like auto-tune that enhance music, which he finds acceptable.

Tools that mimic artists, which he opposes.

A middle ground where AI-created music is influenced by existing artists but doesn’t directly impersonate them, which remains a contentious issue.

“It is going to be tricky,” he said when asked about the challenge the industry was facing.

While Spotify doesn’t impose a complete ban on AI in all forms, the platform does prohibit the use of its content to train machine learning or AI models capable of creating music.

Increasingly, artists are expressing concerns about AI’s role in the creative industries. Irish musician Hozier, for instance, mentioned that he would contemplate taking action against the perceived threat of AI to his profession. He questioned whether the technology truly qualifies as “art.”

In the case of the song “Heart on My Sleeve,” which featured cloned versions of Drake and The Weeknd’s voices without their awareness, it was removed from Spotify and other streaming platforms in April. Its creator, Ghostwriter, later attempted to have the track nominated for a Grammy award but was unsuccessful.

“You can imagine someone uploading a song, claiming to be Madonna, even if they’re not. We’ve seen pretty much everything in the history of Spotify at this point with people trying to game our system,” Mr Ek said.

“We have a very large team that is working on exactly these types of issues.”

In May, the Financial Times revealed that Spotify had removed thousands of tracks due to the discovery of bots artificially inflating their streaming numbers.

Daniel Ek also addressed Spotify’s substantial investment in podcasts, including those featuring prominent individuals like Michelle and Barack Obama, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. However, neither of these podcasts has been renewed.

The deal with Harry and Meghan reportedly amounted to $25 million (£18 million) and resulted in only 12 episodes being delivered over two and a half years. A Spotify executive recently made disparaging remarks about the work ethic of the royal couple.

“The truth of the matter is some of it has worked, some of it hasn’t,” said Mr Ek of the firm’s decision to “challenge Apple” as the market-leading podcast platform by taking on a lot of new creators.

“Five years ago Spotify was nowhere in podcasting.”

Serwaa Amihere responds to Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from NPP

TV host and media figure Serwaa Amihere has questioned Alan Kyerematen’s campaign pledges as he vies for the presidency. She noted his prior influential role in the government and his sudden emergence with new ideas for national progress.

These comments follow Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his independent presidential candidacy announcement.

In a twitter post on September 25, Serwaa Amihere stated, “Alan was a part of this government. A cabinet minister too, but he all of a sudden has fresh ideas for the country.”

Her comments add to the chorus of reactions both online and offline regarding Alan Kyerematen’s political aspirations and his future in Ghana’s political arena.

Alan Kyerematen had been among the top five candidates in the presidential race and was poised to participate in the final selection on November 4, 2023. However, he secured the third position on the ballot list after receiving less than 100 votes out of over 900 cast during the August 2023 Special Delegates conference.

He trailed behind Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. On September 25, 2024, Alan Kyerematen announced his decision to sever ties with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and launch a new political movement called the “Movement For Change.”

  • The meaning of Alan Kyerematen’s “Monarch Butterfly”

The meaning of Alan Kyerematen’s “Monarch Butterfly”

Alan Kyerematen’s choice of the monarch butterfly as his political symbol carries deep symbolism, representing transformation and change in the realm of Ghanaian politics.

The monarch butterfly is known for its striking black and orange colors and is associated with transformation, rebirth, and renewal. This resonates with Kyerematen’s political journey and aspirations. His decision to run as an independent candidate marks a significant departure from his longstanding association with the NPP, and the monarch butterfly symbolizes his quest for political change and growth.

The monarch butterfly’s strength and endurance parallel Kyerematen’s determination to uphold his convictions and principles. Just as the butterfly sustains its beliefs during its remarkable migration, Kyerematen seeks to stand by his ideals in pursuit of a better future for Ghana.

The choice of black and orange in the symbol carries its own significance. Black represents mystery and power, emphasizing the enigmatic nature of Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP. However, it also hints at the mixed emotions and potential conflicts surrounding his decision. On the other hand, the vibrant orange symbolizes Kyerematen’s passion for change, creative approach to politics, and his goal to uplift the spirits of the Ghanaian people.

Overall, the monarch butterfly symbolizes Kyerematen’s political transformation and renewal, embodying resilience, spirituality, and unwavering trust in the pursuit of a better future. His choice of this symbol reflects a fascinating blend of color psychology, mirroring the complexities of his political transition.

As the 2024 elections approach, Alan Kyerematen’s political journey with the monarch butterfly as his symbol will be closely watched, as it represents a powerful transformation in Ghana’s political landscape.

Alan John Kyerematen, a prominent member of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Minister for Trade and Industry, made a surprising decision. He has announced his intention to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections. This move represents a significant juncture in the 67-year-old’s political career, given his long-standing and impactful involvement with the NPP.

During a press conference held in Accra on Monday, September 25, Mr Kyerematen expressed his belief that despite his unwavering dedication and substantial contributions to the party over the years, his efforts have not received due recognition. He further underscored that his continued association with the NPP could potentially worsen existing tensions and divisions, similar to the circumstances that led to his resignation from the party in 2008.

Ghanaian music will prevail against Nigeria’s through the power of dance – Kizomba Dance Ghana founder

Ebo Anderson Jnr., the pioneer of Kizomba Dance in Ghana, known as Kizomba King, has made a striking revelation, stating that dance is the sole means through which Ghanaian music can outshine Nigeria’s.

Kizomba King’s remarks come amidst an ongoing debate regarding why the Nigerian music industry surpasses its Ghanaian counterpart. Some attribute this discrepancy to Nigeria’s larger population, while others point to a shortage of talented musicians in Ghana.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News, Kizomba King firmly stated, “When dancers are accorded the same level of respect as Ghanaian musicians, the music industry will surpass Nigeria’s.”

The originator of Kizomba Dance in Ghana, however, underscores that the key to success for the Ghanaian music industry lies in dance. He contends that Ghanaian dancers are among the world’s finest but do not receive the same recognition as musicians.

“To enhance the Ghanaian music industry, dance should receive the attention it deserves. The lack of emphasis on dance is one of the reasons why the industry is facing challenges. The day Ghanaian dancers would be elevated to the same level as the musicians, the Ghanaian music scene would exceed that of Nigeria.”He said

Alan’s timing for the resignation is inappropriate – Nyaho-Tamakloe

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision taken by former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, to leave the party.

During an interview on Eyewitness News with Citi FM, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe voiced his belief that Kyerematen’s chances of winning the 2024 elections as an independent candidate are slim, and he found the timing of the resignation to be inappropriate.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe argued that Kyerematen’s extensive tenure within the Akufo-Addo government could potentially hinder his presidential aspirations as an independent candidate. This is because he might be perceived as having been complicit in the perceived misconduct among government appointees.

“Winning an election as an independent candidate will be a huge problem for Alan because all the appeals that he has made particularly to the youth will not wash and the reason is quite simple. He has been with the Akufo-Addo’s government for almost seven years and the time that Alan should have left that government, he didn’t.

“Alan should have left the government particularly when he realised the rot going on in the party and that would have automatically turned him into a leader in the future but he didn’t do that.”

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe further criticized the current condition of the NPP and its leadership. He articulated his belief that the party has strayed from its original principles, permitting the proliferation of detrimental elements.

He cited problems such as selfishness, incompetence, tribalism, arrogance, and greed that have infiltrated the party.

“If we were running our party like it is done in the USA or Britain, these things would not have happened. Our party is full of selfishness, incompetence, tribalism, arrogance, and greed and that is what has brought us here today. Our part was not like this years back or else I would not have been part of it.”

Alan Kyerematen formally declared his resignation from the NPP during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel on Monday, September 25. He unveiled his plan to establish the Movement for Change and run as an Independent Candidate in the 2024 elections.

Ghanaian organizers allocate $3.5M for Nigerian artists in December – Baba Sadiq

Music, media entrepreneur, and politician Baba Sadiq has revealed that, each December, Ghanaian event organizers allocate nearly $3.5 million exclusively for Nigerian artists.

Baba Sadiq shared this information in anticipation of the inaugural Guinness Accravaganza, a multifaceted celebration of black culture and magic in Accra.

The event took place at the newly established Barndoor Beer Garden on September 20, 2023, and featured prominent figures from Ghana’s tourism, creative, and cultural sectors.

Among the participants were PaJohn Bentsifi Dadson (founder of Bentsifi/Native Adventures), Abdul-Samed Sadiq (Digital, Ecommerce, and Culture Manager at Guinness Ghana), Anabelle Mckenzie (Director, Year of Return), Kennedy Agyapong Jr (Co-founder, Afrofuture), Mariam Agyeman-Buahin (Marketing Consultant), and Sadiq Abdulai Abu (Founder, 3Music TV | Full Circle Management).

Discussing the challenges faced by event organizers in securing sponsorships, Baba Sadiq remarked:

“From the beginning of the year If you look at the budget allocated to the tourism sector alone it can’t cater for the whole year, but they can’t complain for fear of being victimised…they know they’re struggling but wouldn’t say it…look, in December alone events in Ghana ship in over 3.5 million dollars on Nigerian talents alone.”

Baba Sadiq, also a parliamentary aspirant for the Okaikoi Central constituency under the NDC banner, mentioned that event organizers are actively exploring alternative funding avenues for their events.

Dancehall artist Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has decided to cancel this year’s Freedom Wave Concert.

In early September, Shatta Wale had initially announced that the Freedom Wave Concert would take place on December 25, 2023. A promotional flyer shared on social media outlined a series of events scheduled to start on Wednesday, December 20, and conclude on December 25.

However, shortly thereafter, the president of Bhim Nation, Stonebwoy, announced his own end-of-year concert on December 22 at the same venue.

Expressing his displeasure with this turn of events, Shatta Wale took to social media to voice his frustrations. He accused Stonebwoy and his team of attempting to undermine his show, which had been held at the Accra Sports Stadium for the previous two years and was set to feature Medikal.

Even if the party convinces him ,Alan will never return to NPP – Prof Gyampo

University of Ghana’s political science lecturer, Professor Ransford Gyampo, recommends that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should acknowledge Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen‘s resignation as he is unlikely to return to the party. He believes that even if the party attempts to persuade him to reconsider his decision, Kyerematen is resolute in his departure.

Kyerematen announced his resignation from the New Patriotic Party on Monday, September 25, with the intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.

During an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Citi TV, Prof. Gyampo criticized the party for its failure to address the concerns raised by Mr. Kyerematen following the August primaries.

“I think that the decision has already been taken, the party must come to terms with it. We warned the party, did research, did the analysis and predicted, that if some of the things he complained about which he warned the party against were not handled well, then he could break away. And that will not augur well for a party that is interested in breaking the 8. But it appears that the party, just like the government doesn’t listen. Alan is a goner, he’s gone, and he will not return to the NPP,” Professor Gyampo asserted.

He anticipated that the former Trade and Industry Minister’s departure would impact the party, as it could potentially draw away a portion of the NPP’s support base.

“They [NPP] should quickly put in place measures that will minimise the impact because whether you like it or not the man [Alan] is going to take away some support base from the party. If you want to break the 8, you cannot go into this contest with this particular incident if you don’t put in place measures. He will give them a run for their money,” he predicted.

The political science lecturer pointed out that Mr. Kyerematen has not jeopardized his political future by resigning from the party.

“I don’t think it’s a political suicide, given the events he narrated as causing the decision that he took. It appears that there was no way he was going to be able to surmount the challenges that were confronting him within his own party. He said he wants to serve in the highest capacity as the president of the land. It clearly shows given the narration he gave that his party was not going to give him the chance. He still has that ambition, so the best thing he had to do was to take the decision he has taken just so he can be able to serve the country,” he stated.

NPP’s Owusu-Bempah alleges OccupyJulorbiHouse demo was a coup plot by NDC

Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, has expressed concern over how internal criticism within the party is sometimes used by opposition voices. In response to the recent #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest in Accra, Owusu-Bempah accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating the protest with the intention of destabilizing the government.

“NDC claims the government hasn’t done anything and massed up to go and overthrow the government at Jubilee House.

“What is going on is disgusting to them… to the extent that Ghanaians have forgotten what John Mahama came to do. The blame lies with our own people. The attitude our own people are showing to this government is the root cause,” he lamented during a grassroots meeting in the Ashanti Region on September 24.

He emphasized the critical importance of the NPP securing political victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections, even as the party prepares for the November 4 presidential primaries.

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests were organized by Democracy Hub, a group of young individuals advocating for government action to address economic challenges and combat corruption. They have consistently asserted their political neutrality and independence, staging both online and on-ground activities to highlight their concerns despite facing unlawful arrests by the police and heavy police presence on the second and third days of their protests.

Meanwhile, the NPP faces a significant setback following Alan Kyerematen’s announcement on September 25 that he was resigning from the party and would be running as an independent presidential candidate.

“Whether we like it or not, we cannot allow the NDC to come to power… The future is at stake and the party is at the crossroads, at a crescendo, this is the time to fight and rescue the party,” he added.

With Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the race, the four remaining aspirants in the NPP presidential race are Kennedy Agyapong, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former MP Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The victor of the primary will assume the role of the party’s leader, succeeding President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Additionally, they will lead the NPP in the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

Going independent won’t destroy the NPP – Alan

A former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has expressed his enduring commitment to the party’s founding principles despite his recent resignation and decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

Speaking to supporters and the media at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra, he emphasized that his choice to contest independently should not be perceived as a destructive force.

Kyerematen further conveyed that his independent candidacy aimed not to harm the party but to provide it with an opportunity to participate in future national unity governments.

“My decision to contest [the 2024 elections] as an independent candidate will not destroy the party,” he said on Monday, September 25, “but rather provide the party an opportunity to participate in the government of national unity in the future.”

He exhibited confidence in his chances of winning the elections and assured supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that he would serve as a president for them as well.

His withdrawal from the NPP occurred exactly 20 days after he pulled out of the party’s presidential race, despite initially being a frontrunner in the primaries.

This decision came following the super-delegates’ conference on August 26, where Kennedy Agyapong secured second place after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Kyerematen withdrew, citing intimidation of his supporters and partiality within the party leadership toward other contenders.

Leadership subsequently initiated investigations into his claims, with the NPP expected to respond to his recent resignation as a founding member and decision to contest independently.

Sammy Gyamfi reacts to Alan’s resignation from NPP

The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has responded to former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen’s decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

In a post shared on X, on Monday, September 25, 2023, Sammy Gyamfi expressed empathy for Alan but pointed out that Alan had played a role in the challenges currently faced by Ghanaians and couldn’t distance himself from them. He emphasized that, in his view, both Alan and the NPP lacked innovative solutions and, therefore, should be rejected by the electorate.

“The point has to be made forcefully, that Alan is not a viable alternative to the failed incumbent NPP government as a cabinet minister responsible for Trade and Industry and a member of the Economic Management team from 2017-2023, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen actively participated in the destruction of the economy into the mess it is today.

“Under his watch, the Komenda Sugar Factory was abandoned to rot for almost six (6) years. Growth of the manufacturing sector declined significantly and businesses were suffocated by the bad policies of his Ministry and government leading to several job losses,” parts of the post reads.

Additionally, Sammy Gyamfi highlighted that Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP was primarily driven by his significant loss at the party’s special delegates conferences.

“Would Alan have resigned from the NPP if he had been treated fairly by the NPP in their ongoing Presidential primaries?

“Clearly, it is the pain of rejection by the super delegates of the NPP and the intimidation and harassment of his supporters which is fueling Alan’s latest decision and not any superior passion to help heal the partisan divisions in the country. But it is too late for Alan to jump ship now. Alan is not and cannot be the solution to the very mess he participated in creating!” he added.

Alan Kyeremateng, announced his decision to leave the NPP and also contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections at a press conference in Accra, on Monday, September 25, 2023,

He said that even though it was his wish to become president of Ghana on the ticket of the NPP, the party has now been hijacked by ‘unscrupulous party apparatchiks’.

“The NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, “behind the curtain power brokers” and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks.

“… I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 general elections as an independent presidential candidate,” he said.

We will hit government with another kind of #OccupyJulorbiHouse – Democracy Hub

A member of the Democracy Hub pressure group’s Communications Team has announced their intention to organize further street protests.

Solomon Wise made this known during an interview with the media on Monday, September 25, just two days after participating in a three-day demonstration known as #OccupyJulorbiHouse.

He stated, “We are going back,” indicating their intention to continue their protests.

“We are going back, we are not giving them rest,” he added, though it is unclear whether he was referring to authorities in power or the police.

Solomon Wise criticized the police for their handling of protesters during the initial day of the protest on Thursday, September 21. He described the police response as problematic and called for a review of the police curriculum used for handling demonstrations.

Wise also recounted being taken into custody and stated that they were asked to strip naked, which they resisted.

He criticized the police for allegedly acting on the orders of their superiors and politicians rather than using their own judgment and intelligence.

“When you watch the way they handled us from Thursday up till Saturday, especially on the day of Thursday, the Day of Shame, for me, I would like to advocate the police curriculum that is used to train the police at demo should be really looked at,” he demanded.

During the protest, there were moments of relative success on Friday and Saturday, as the protesters were allowed to march toward the government’s headquarters, albeit with certain restrictions.

“We demanded that we are not going to remove our dresses, so the police were actually acting on the whims and caprices of their superiors and superiors also are acting on the whims and caprices of politicians and the police is not reasoning on their intelligence no more.”

He emphasised: “And at that state, we see the police as enemy of the state because they are no more using any intelligence to work with.”

However, tensions flared on Saturday as confrontations with the police escalated. The protest was eventually addressed by Convenor Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

Solomon Wise also disclosed that his phone was allegedly stolen by the police during the course of the protest.

During the protest, there were moments of relative success on both Friday and Saturday, with the protesters being permitted to march from their assembly point at the 37 Lorry Station toward the government’s headquarters. However, their progress was halted in front of the 37 Military Hospital.

On Saturday, there was a tense situation as the protesters faced attempts to encircle and contain them, which escalated tensions and nearly led to chaos.

The protesters ultimately remained at the Akuafo Intersection until they were addressed by the Convenor of the protest, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

NPP calls for calm amid Alan’s resignation

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a statement addressing the resignation of former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, urging party members to remain calm.

In a statement released by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Monday, September 25, the party acknowledged Kyerematen’s decision to resign and contest as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections.

The party advised its members to await an official address regarding Kyerematen’s resignation, scheduled for 14:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the Party headquarters.

Alan Kyerematen, in a press conference in Accra on Monday, announced his resignation from the NPP to run as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

This marks his second resignation from the NPP, the first being in 2007 before his return. Kyerematen cited the mistreatment of his supporters and the perception that his contributions were no longer valued in the party as reasons for his decision.

He also accused the NPP leadership of favoring one particular aspirant in internal elections.

The NPP leadership’s statement urged party members to remain calm and await further information on the situation.

“Persons associated with me are treated with disdain and outright outcast,” Mr Kyerematen who placed third in the super delegates conference of the NPP held on August 26 said.

He alleged that the NPP leadership had manipulated internal elections to favor a specific candidate.

  • Kumasi market traders demand timelines for Kejetia project

Kumasi market traders demand timelines for Kejetia project

Traders in Kumasi have expressed their displeasure over the stalled phase two of the Kejetia Central Market redevelopment project.

They have issued a warning of a forthcoming demonstration to pressure authorities into resuming work on the project and have requested the government to provide clear timelines for its completion.

Several crucial projects in Kumasi, including the second phase of the Kejetia Central Market redevelopment, the Mother and Baby Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), phases two and three of the Kumasi International Airport expansion, and various Sinohydro projects, have been halted since December of the previous year due to funding shortages.

The traders, who intend to utilize these spaces once the projects are finished, have repeatedly emphasized the urgent need for construction to recommence, as they are becoming increasingly frustrated by the delays.

Emilia Kwofie, the secretary of the combined Kumasi Central Market Traders Union, stated in an interview with the media that they are demanding that authorities prioritize the project and that they will proceed with the demonstration after completing the necessary procedures with the police.

“We have been to the mayor’s office a couple of times to inquire, because you just can’t demonstrate when you don’t have any concrete information. We were assured that if the IMF money comes, work will commence. Unfortunately, we have realized that even though the IMF money is in, no work is done. There are quite a number of us who were evacuated from the place.

So our people keep pushing that if we want to go diplomatically and the government is not listening to us, then we will have to take it to the streets. So that somebody sees us and nobody hears us. As we talk to you now, we are still talking with the police to give us a date when we can demonstrate. All we want is for work to resume so that we can start our businesses; we can’t stay in the house forever.”

In response to the traders’ concerns, Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne did not specify a precise date for the resumption of work on the projects. However, he noted that discussions are currently underway with the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Local Government. He expressed optimism that construction on these projects would recommence in the near future.

“As part of the government’s debt restructuring programme, certain projects and funding have been put on hold. Kejetia-Central Market redevelopment, the Mother and Baby block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Phases two and three of the Kumasi International Airport expansion and Sinohydro projects with the region, were all affected. The contract, project consultant, and officials of the local government ministry and finance ministry, were on site two weeks ago to do a comprehensive study. I know pretty soon they will come back to the site to continue work,” Sam Pyne assured.

  • Barker-Vormawor takes legal action against National Security Minister

Barker-Vormawor takes legal action against National Security Minister

A lead convenor of the #FixtheCountry# movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has announced his intention to file a formal complaint against the Minister for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah.

This decision stems from corruption allegations made against him by the minister.

Barker-Vormawor revealed this plan in a post shared on Twitter on September 25, 2023, and stated that the complaint would be submitted to the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

    Background:

Advocates of the #FixTheCountry movement alleged that they were offered a substantial one million dollars to halt the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

This revelation, conveyed through the official FixTheCountry Twitter account, shed light on efforts to disrupt the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest.

Despite facing police arrests and a secured injunction, the protest, organized by Democracy Hub, initially began, with the organizers citing a lack of formal notification of the court order.

Responding to this situation, the FixTheCountry group expressed their stance through a tweet from their official Twitter account. They stated, “Since they want it this way, we will talk. The cabinet promised us $1 million if only we can stop the demonstration. We rejected! We want a better Ghana.”

After being released from police custody on September 22, 2023, along with other participants in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, Oliver Barker-Vormawor informed journalists that they possess secret recordings of their meetings with Mr. Kan Dapaah, unbeknownst to the government.

He said: “While I was in the UK, the National Security Minister called and invited me for a sit-down. The government offered to pay for my flight, in order to meet here in Ghana”.

“This was something that was never disclosed to the public”, he said, “but we met at a safe house for us to stop our activism,” Mr Barker-Vormawor narrated.

“This was way before we started the first #FixTheCountry demonstration,” he noted.

“We were offered not only money but appointments; and if we agreed to stop this, we were going to be free, but the most important thing was not to bring citizens onto the streets,” he claimed.

He said: “When we rejected that, Kan Dapaah, the National Security Minister, said to my face that if we decide to continue on this course of action, we will be arrested.”

“We will be dealt with and that it will be over his dead body any demonstrations will happen. At the time we were even in Supreme Court at the time,” he said.

“So, I was not surprised that I was ultimately arrested by the government and continue being charged for treason,” he said, adding: “For over two years now, the government has tried to prevent us from mobilising people.”

In a statement, the ministry acknowledged that in 2021, the Ministers of National Security and Finance, along with other relevant stakeholders, engaged with the conveners of the Fix the Country Movement to listen to their concerns. However, the statement emphasized that no offer of money or appointment was made to persuade the group to end its “activism.”

“The allegations made by Oliver Barker-Vormawor are, thus, false, unfounded, and a calculated attempt to hoodwink Ghanaians”, the statement noted.

“This Ministry, therefore, challenges him to produce the alleged recording of the said inducement. Meanwhile, the general public is urged to ignore the allegations and treat them with the utmost contempt they deserve”, the statement added.

  • 5 reasons behind Alan’s resignation from NPP

5 reasons behind Alan’s resignation from NPP

Former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen, in a surprising move, announced his resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday, September 25.

This decision came as a shock to many, especially considering his recent third-place finish in the party’s super delegates conference held on August 26 for presidential hopefuls.

During his address to the nation at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Kyerematen provided the following explanations for his departure from the NPP.

Disfavour created against Alan to diminish his popularity

Mr. Kyerematen revealed that he had endured what he considered to be unfair treatment from the NPP for approximately 15 years.

“In 2007, I joined a distinguished group of seventeen (17) Presidential aspirants to contest in the presidential primaries of NPP. In that election, under very strange circumstances, the electoral process was truncated on the day of the election, on account of accusations levelled against me, of influencing the course of the elections. This strategy was designed to create disfavour against me, in an attempt to diminish my popularity and the massive support I enjoyed amongst the grassroot activists of the Party.”

He mentioned that despite the perceived conspiracy against him, he decided to throw his support behind then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prevent a run-off.

    Hostility and brutality

Mr. Kyerematen also expressed his concerns about the hostility and brutality directed at him and his supporters, despite all the sacrifices he had made for the party. He revealed that there were serious post-primary attacks against him and his supporters.

Despite lodging complaints with the party leadership and receiving assurances that his concerns would be addressed, little to nothing was done to halt these attacks.

“Despite the sacrifice that I made to unite the Party as referred to above, there were very serious post-primary attacks on my supporters all over the country and an open show of hostility. Some of my supporters were victims of brutalities and continue to bear the scars of that treatment. I made several representations to the then leadership of the Party, drawing their attention to the rancorous and divisive behaviour of some elements in the Party.

“Unfortunately, however, all the promises made by the Party leadership were never fulfilled, and indeed the divisive and hostile attacks on my person and my supporters remained for several years thereafter, and have continued to date.”

NPP’s National Council’s disregard for the rule of law

Mr. Kyerematen expressed his disappointment with the National Council of the NPP’s handling of the issues he raised following the super delegates’ conference of the party in August 2023.

He alleged that the conference was strategically and tactically biased in favor of one particular aspirant, and he had expected the Council to address this unfairness. However, they did not take any action to rectify the situation.

“In the run-up to the Super Delegates Conference, the National Council of the Party made some of the most controversial and contentious decisions in the history of the Party. They rejected a petition signed by nine out of the ten aspirants, requesting for the Super Delegates Conference to be held in one location, as well as allowing each Delegate to the Conference to nominate five persons, instead of one, in line with the provisions in the Party’s Constitution.

“To make matters worse, it was absolutely clear as indicated in my Press Statement of September 6th this year that, the Super Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular aspirant. The level of intimidation and monetization that characterized the Conference is unprecedented in the history of internal elections of our Party.”

Hijacking of NPP by some persons

Mr. Kyerematen lamented that the New Patriotic Party has undergone an unhealthy transition in recent years and has been taken over by certain party leaders, making it impossible for him to remain a part of it.

“I have devoted the best part of my professional career to serving the Party, and I still believe in the vision of the founding fathers of the Party. However, the NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, “behind the curtain power brokers” and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks.”

    Ghana’s rising unemployment figures

He also expressed concern about the alarming youth unemployment figures. He stated that his resignation and decision to contest the 2024 polls as an independent candidate are motivated by his desire to contribute his part in addressing and resolving this unfortunate issue.

“It is also worth noting that every year over 300,000 (three hundred thousand) graduates from tertiary institutions in Ghana, excluding those from secondary institutions, enter the job market with little or no hope of finding a job. Clearly, public sector employment is not an option, with an already over-bloated public service. This phenomenon of pervasive employment crisis, is gradually becoming a national security threat, as evidenced by the recent “Occupy Julorbi House” demonstrations. The initial reaction of the Police in manhandling some protestors is not the solution to the problem. What Ghana needs now is CHANGE, which will provide long-lasting solutions to the challenges confronting our country.”

Assorko community protests exclusion from Anto-Aboso quarry blast probe committee

The chiefs and residents of Assorko in the Shama District have expressed their displeasure at not being included in the nine-member committee established to investigate the quarry explosion in Kobina-Andokrom-Anto-Aboso.

They consider this omission disrespectful and selective, given that Assorko is both the owner of the affected area and has also suffered the consequences of the explosion.

The Chief of Assorko, Nana Brekrom, raised concerns about the committee’s formation, questioning how an investigation could occur on their land without their representation on the committee and how the committee could reach conclusions without consulting the landowners.

“Another indication that clearly manifests the intent of ignoring the people of Assorko as part of the affected people is the formation of a nine-member committee to probe the cause of the explosion. We believe that as owners and users of the land on which the explosion occurred, we should inevitably be part of or represented on the committee.”

“Our question to the authorities who set up the committee and the members of the committee is: Do they have the intent to contact us for information as part of their work? And if I may ask them, ‘Do they have any justification that we will cooperate after we have been treated as foreigners or invisible in the spiritual realm?’ We are indeed peeved and disappointed. We also feel ashamed for being disregarded and disrespected on our own lands and in our own backyard,” he stated.

Only 17 out of 5,400 schools under trees have been completed – Efia Odo

Social media influencer and actress, Efia Odo, has criticized the Akufo-Addo-led government and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what she perceives as inadequate attention given to the country’s educational system.

In a tweet, she expressed her dissatisfaction with the government’s progress in addressing the state of schools in dilapidated conditions.

According to her, since 2021, the Akufo-Addo-led government has only managed to complete 17 out of the many schools that were previously under trees, in sheds, or in deteriorated structures.

“Only 17 out of the 5,400 schools under trees, sheds, and dilapidated structures have been completed by the Akufo-Addo-led government since 2021,” she added.

Efia Odo has gained recognition for her active participation in protests since 2021, where she has been an outspoken critic of the president for mishandling the economy.

She is also known for using her platform to draw attention to various issues affecting the country as well as consistently highlighting the challenges and hardships faced by Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the government announced a program with the aim of replacing all schools under trees, sheds, and dilapidated structures with new and suitable school buildings by 2025.

However, the report reveals that at the current pace, it would take Ghana more than 300 years to eliminate the existing 5,400 inadequate schools, a situation deemed unacceptable.

Scores of Ghanaians in recent times have voiced out their grievances over the country’s economic which is marked by persistent depreciation of the local currency, increasing inflation, and deterioration in various macroeconomic indicators.

Recently some protestors took to the streets of Accra to participate in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest organised by the Democracy Hub group.

The demonstration, held to voice grievances about the government’s economic policies and alleged corruption, witnessed mass police arrest on September 21.

A number of the 50 protesters, including journalists, have come forward with allegations of experiencing not only arrests but also instances of police brutality and the confiscation of their personal belongings.

These events have sparked public outrage, with many condemning the police for their use of excessive force against unarmed demonstrators.

    Alan Kyerematen outlines four-point agenda

Former trade minister, Alan Kyerematen has unveiled a four-point agenda for his independent candidacy in the 2024 polls.

Mr Kyerematen cited long-standing divisiveness within the NPP and alleged hostile attacks on himself and his supporters spanning over a decade.

In his announcement to run as an independent presidential candidate on the same day, Kyerematen introduced his proposed “movement for change,” emphasizing that he would champion this paradigm shift if entrusted with leading Ghana.

“I have endured all this resentment, and maintained my integrity within the party throughout the past fifteen years.”

On Monday, September 25, 2023, while announcing his candidacy as an independent presidential candidate, Mr. Kyerematen unveiled his vision for Ghana, known as the “movement for change.” He expressed his commitment to championing this paradigm shift if entrusted with the leadership of the country.

    1. Change the political status quo by moving Ghana beyond the duopoly of the two main political parties in Ghana; the NPP and NDC. This will break divisive partisanship in governance in Ghana, and bring an end to the “winner takes all” political syndrome. In addition, there is the need to promote reforms in the internal democratic processes and procedures of all political parties, such as introducing ‘One Man One Vote’ (OMOV) to ensure inclusiveness, and reduce the effect of monetization in politics. The principles underpinning national elections must be reflected in the electoral process of political parties in Ghana.
    2. Promote the establishment of a Government of National Unity, which will include people from all walks of life, irrespective of their political, religious, and ethnic affiliations: rich or poor, abled-bodied or physically challenged, young or old, women and men. This will allow for effective and inclusive participatory governance. The MOVEMENT will lead to the formation of a Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
    3. Build consensus on a National Development Agenda which will introduce a new paradigm shift that moves Ghana from growth and stability to economic transformation. This paradigm shift will be driven by my Great Transformational Plan (GTP) for Ghana, which puts the private sector and the business community at the center of our national development efforts.

    4. Inspire behavioural and attitudinal change in the people of Ghana. This will include but not be limited to the following.

    a. Enforcement of Discipline: We as a people should appreciate the need for maintaining discipline in all spheres of our national lives, including changing our attitude to work.

    b. A War against Corruption: Corruption, particularly from the public purse, denies our country the benefit of utilizing its tax revenue and other resources for the development of our country. All sections of Ghanaian society should wage a vigorous war on corruption, through a combination of legal and institutional reforms, the application of technology including artificial intelligence, blockchain technology and data analytics, as well as maintaining societal pressure against corruption, and leading by example. If elected as the President of the Republic, I will sign a “Citizens Contract” with the people of Ghana, committing to wage a relentless war against corruption.

    c. Arrogance of Power: As I have stated on previous occasions, the arrogance of power has been a major obstruction to progress in our country. People in positions of authority must understand that leadership is an opportunity to serve the people, and not to lord over them. In servant leadership, humility is an asset and not a weakness.

    d. Passion for Excellence: As a country, we must celebrate competence and excellence and not mediocrity. Advancement in the public sector in particular, must be based on meritocracy and not patronage and protocol. Putting square pegs in round holes has been the biggest challenge for service delivery at every level in our governance structure. A significant shift in this regard, will allow the best talents in our country, particularly the youth, to be deployed to achieve optimum performance in various institutions and organizations.

    e. Solution Based Thinking and a Focus on Execution: As a people, we must focus more on ‘getting things done’ and finding solutions to problems, rather than spending time on excessive and needles debates.

    f. Making Laws Work in Ghana: The lack of compliance and disrespect for laws, rules, and regulations in Ghana, is a major stumbling block for national development. As a people, we must commit ourselves to the sanctity and rule of law, to ensure peace, law, and order in our society.

    g. Patriotism: The pride of being Ghanaian and promoting good citizenship, as well as patronizing goods made in Ghana, is a development imperative.

I am capable of transforming Ghana’s economy – Alan

Former Trade Minister and unsuccessful presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen, has declared himself as the leader capable of ensuring Ghana’s economic revival.

Alan Kyerematen resigned from the NPP on Monday, September 25, and has declared his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

“I am using this platform to introduce myself to you, the good people of Ghana and humbly seek your support to become the next President of the Republic of Ghana.”

“I believe, with unwavering conviction, that I am the only leader who, with unmatched integrity, can guarantee the economic and industrial transformation of Ghana, the restoration of confidence in political leadership, and the unification of an increasingly divided nation,” he said.

Alan Kyerematen has emphasized that his unique selling proposition revolves around “vision, competence, integrity, and action.”

He has pointed out that Ghana’s widespread employment crisis is evolving into a national security concern, citing the recent “Occupy Julorbi House” protests organized by the Democracy Hub in Accra as evidence of this growing threat.

“Every year over 300,000 graduates from tertiary institutions in Ghana, excluding those from secondary institutions, enter the job market with little or no hope of finding a job. Clearly, public sector employment is not an option, with an already over-bloated public service. Melcom, China Mall – Tweeps list companies that pay their employees less than GHC1000

Companies such as Melcom and China Mall are reportedly on a list of firms that pay their employees not more than GHS1000 per month.

This information stems from comments that followed a question posed by Twitter account @StatsGH, asking “Which well-known companies, besides Papas Pizza, pays employees below GHS1000 monthly?”.

Netizens who seemed to have answers to the question, filled up the comments with names of companies they claim are guilty of offering remuneration below GHS1000 monthly. Melcom and China Mall amongst several other companies were repeatedly mentioned.

Additionally, it was alleged that all waiters in restaurants and fuel station attendants in Ghana earn less than GHS 1000.

These revelations come at a time when Ghana is facing a severe economic crisis, primarily due to escalating public debt.

The country has been grappling with economic challenges, leading to protests in Accra where demonstrators expressed their concerns about the high cost of living and the scarcity of job opportunities.

These protests have resulted in numerous arrests.

Meanwhile, the government has pledged to improve conditions in the country for the benefit of all citizens.

60-year-old woman killed over witchcraft allegations in North East Region

Police in the North East region have began a probe into the murder of a 60-year-old woman who had been accused of witchcraft in Janga, West Mamprusi district.

The victim was allegedly shot by a young man who is related to her. Her lifeless body has been transported to WaleWale Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Zakari Iddi, the deceased woman’s brother-in-law, reported that the woman was inside her residence when the attacker approached and fired the fatal shot.

He stated, “she was in her room and they pulled out to the entrance and they shot her. All that I know is that she is suspected of witchcraft.”

It’s worth noting that Ghana’s parliament passed legislation in 2020 to safeguard individuals accused of witchcraft, making it illegal to mistreat or exile them from their communities.

This law was enacted following the lynching of a 90-year-old woman in Kafaba, East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region in July 2020. The incident had garnered widespread condemnation from both local and international human rights organizations.

Government rolls out French language training for 2000 hospitality workers

The government has initiated a training program for approximately 2,000 hospitality staff members in French as part of an extensive language training initiative aimed at enhancing the overall tourism experience for international visitors, further solidifying Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming destination in the sub-region.

This effort, a component of the government’s Ghana Cares Economic Transformation program, aims to facilitate effective communication and provide exceptional, personalized services to Francophone guests, demonstrating Ghana’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and culturally sensitive tourism industry.

The Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, stated during a press briefing in Accra on Sunday, September 24, 2023, that a significant proportion of tourists visiting Ghana’s attractions come from French-speaking nations.

Consequently, the language training program has been strategically developed to equip frontline personnel across the tourism sector with bilingual proficiency. This will enable them to engage effectively and cater to the specific needs of visitors, particularly those from French-speaking countries.

Dr. Awal emphasized the importance of expanding tourism to Francophone countries, given Ghana’s geographical proximity to several French-speaking West African nations.

He highlighted the potential for repeat tourism and economic growth by attracting visitors from these regions.

The training program is being carried out in phases, with an initial pilot phase involving 100 staff members from upscale hotels in Accra. This phase, which started in September and runs until December 2023, serves as a test run to ensure thorough training and evaluation before expanding the initiative on a larger scale.

Dr. Awal emphasized that the government’s vision extends beyond this pilot phase, with the ultimate goal being to train a total of 2,000 hospitality staff members. This aligns with the broader government objective of making Ghana a more appealing destination for a diverse range of tourists.

The Minister highlighted that such investments in skill development are crucial for the long-term growth and success of the tourism sector, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing service quality and improving tourist destinations in the country.

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Emmanuel Anyimah has expressed concern over the silence of certain religious leaders in relation to the ongoing Limited Registration Exercise organized by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking to the media, Mr Anyimah, pointed out that influential figures like founder of the Action Chapel International ministry, Archbishop Duncan Williams, founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, and the Peace Council should lend their voices to important matters like this to prevent future conflicts.

“You see what is more annoying is the people who are quiet in this country and I will mention some of them, Duncan Williams, pastor Mensa Otabil, peace council is quiet all these men are quiet. They all know what this woman is doing is not right,” he stated.

He emphasized that it is high time these religious leaders openly addressed the issues and that doing so could help rectify the actions of the EC.

Mr Anyimah also suggested that the controversies surrounding the EC’s actions could potentially escalate and lead to a coup, similar to how coups have started in other countries.

He emphasized that the NDC, prioritizes the nation’s welfare, as a result, members of the party are refraining from actions that could potentially destabilize the country.

Instead, they have chosen to exercise patience and explore alternative approaches to address the perceived inefficiencies in how the Electoral Commission is conducting the registration exercise.

“We need peace in this country, the NDC has protected 1992 constitution and the reason is because we have tolerated each political party. It’s not that a coups in Gabon and the likes cannot happen in Ghana. Because all these instigate a coup,” he added.

The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah during a media briefing on the voter registration exercise, accused the Commission of intentionally creating obstacles in the voter registration process in its strongholds.

He alleged that the EC had deliberately supplied malfunctioning machines to some district offices in regions where the NDC holds significant support in order to disrupt and discourage eligible voters.

“There is not more than two centres where these breakdowns are happening which are in the stronghold of the NPP. All the rest are in the stronghold of the NDC…It is like his excellency when he was complaining about politicking within the bar association which turns to campaign at the bar conference,” he said.

The 21-day limited voter registration exercise commenced on Tuesday, September 12.

So far, 182,831 persons had been registered as of Saturday, September 16 (six days into the exercise). Out of the total persons registered, 53.9 per cent are males, while females constitute 46.1 per cent. The Ashanti Region has the highest number of registrants with 29,255.

Accra Regional Police Commander summoned over #OccupyJulorbiHouse brutalities

The Police Management Board (POMAB) has summoned COP Sayibu Gariba, the Accra Regional Police Commander, to provide explanations regarding the use of excessive force against participants in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

Internal sources from the Police Service have disclosed that the matter is being treated seriously, with COP Gariba being questioned and summoned to clarify the incident.

A comprehensive investigation into the incident is also slated to take place.

In the midst of this, the Police Service has issued an apology to the public for any inconveniences caused during the three-day protests.

Organized by the Democracy Hub group, the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration aimed to compel the government to address economic challenges and probe allegations of corruption.

Accra will always flood when rain exceeds 50mm – GMeT

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has issued a warning stating that Accra, the capital of the country, is prone to flooding when rainfall exceeds 50 millimetres.

This caution follows a recent heavy downpour last Friday, which resulted in extensive flooding in various parts of Accra.

Locations such as the Tema Motorway, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, North Kaneshie, Alajo, Adabraka, Accra Central, Tema, Tema station-Accra, Osu, and others were severely affected after nearly an hour of rainfall.

The floodwaters submerged homes and vehicles, causing drainage systems to overflow, and exacerbating road potholes.

Joseph Portuphy, the Head of Forecasting at the GMeT, an interview with the media he stated that the recorded rainfall was 78 millimetres, which explained the widespread flooding in the city.

“If we have a rain above 50 millimetres within two to three hours Accra will be flooded and that was what happened,” he stated.

He emphasized that Accra would face significant problems whenever rainfall exceeded 50 millimetres within a two to three-hour period.

Mr. Portuphy acknowledged that while Accra is currently experiencing the minor rainy season, heavy rainfall is expected. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has also issued a cautionary advisory to the public regarding the anticipated heavy rains.

George Ayisi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NADMO, conveyed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has predicted more rainfall, urging the public to prepare for these forthcoming downpours.

Ayisi emphasized the importance of staying informed and vigilant, especially for those traveling or residing in areas prone to flooding or stormy conditions.

He advised individuals to identify safe locations within the city and consider relocating to safer areas when necessary, for the safety of themselves and their families.

“We are in constant touch with GMeT and they keep updating us every time. They say the rains are going to be severe, they are going to be heavy so we should be careful.

“Those who are travelling in some cases it will be stormy, windy. If you are travelling to places where there are trees and co just be careful. If you are in areas where the roofing of houses or homes areas not too good, let’s be careful in those areas.

“If we are in areas where we are not sure and they are flood prone let’s try and identify safe havens in the city and then let’s try and move to safer grounds for ourselves and our relatives,” he stated.

Disregard Barker-Vormawor’s allegations of bribery – NPP Youth wing

The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a challenge to Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, calling upon him to provide substantial evidence to support his recent allegations.

Barker-Vormawor had claimed that the government had made financial offers and job appointments in an attempt to persuade him to cease his activism.

In response to these allegations, Barker-Vormawor and his fellow activists stated that they had declined the government’s offers during a meeting with the National Security Minister. However, the Ministry of National Security strongly denied these accusations.

Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, expressed his skepticism regarding Barker-Vormawor’s claims, labeling him as a “chronic liar.”

Mustapha challenged him to furnish any evidence, such as recordings, to substantiate his assertions. He emphasized that without such evidence, Barker-Vormawor’s credibility should be seriously questioned.

“I think he is a chronic liar and he should produce evidence that he says he has a recording. I have also done a little bit of a crosscheck with the National Security people and they also demand and have challenged Vormawor to produce any evidence, even if it is a second of recording that he has, he should bring it and prove a point,” he stated.

Furthermore, Mustapha accused the convener of the #FixTheCountry movement of using activism as a cover to advance his political ambitions. He cautioned against permitting individuals to exploit public sentiment for personal gain, as it could potentially undermine the integrity of the nation’s democracy.

“We should not allow people to perfect their political interest behind the smoke screen. We do that at the risk of a buoyant democracy being turned into a sham. Exactly what he is doing. From his antics of calling for a coup when he was living in the comfort of a civilised society in London coming down here and all his antics shows someone with a certain perversion clearly woven in such uncanny politics,” he stated.

Dr. Addo-Kufuor refutes claims of being Ghana’s third wealthiest

A prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kwame Addo-Kufuor, has refuted allegations of being the third wealthiest person in Ghana.

An anonymous TikTok user claimed that Dr. Addo-Kufuor possesses a net worth of US$1.2 billion, ranking him as the third richest individual in Ghana.

In response to these accusations, legal representatives from Zoe, Akyea & Co. Legal Practitioners & Notaries Public issued a statement describing the claims as baseless and aimed at tarnishing Dr. Kufuor’s hard-earned reputation.

“We have received explicit instructions from our client to categorically state that he does not possess such a substantial amount of wealth and will demand the utmost proof of this groundless allegation from the anonymous accuser.”

Dr. Addo-Kufuor’s lawyers asserted that his wealth was acquired through legitimate means, notably during his tenure as the Board Chairman of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

They further warned that a defamation lawsuit may be pursued once the identity of the individuals behind these allegations is revealed.

“We have further instructions to fish out those behind this disdainful practice of character assassination with the view to taking them on in a defamatory suit in a court of competent jurisdiction”.

  • Minority to summon Scholarship Secretariat Administrator to Parliament

Minority to summon Scholarship Secretariat Administrator to Parliament

The Minority in Parliament has stated that they intend to summon the Administrator of the Scholarship Secretariat before Parliament in the upcoming days.

Their concern revolves around the outstanding bursaries owed to the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) for the past two years.

The caucus firmly asserts that despite the government’s allocation of a budget amounting to GH¢223 million for the scholarship secretariat, funds have not been disbursed for the payment of GRASAG bursaries.

During the handover ceremony at the University of Ghana, Legon, the Minority Chief Whip, Governs Agbodza, articulated their commitment to utilizing all available avenues to ensure government compliance in disbursing the funds.

Agbodza emphasized, “The Minority will, in the coming days, employ the appropriate legal procedures to compel the administrator of the Scholarship Secretariat to account for the two-year arrears in GRASAG bursaries.

These funds have already been allocated, and we can only pursue this course of action within the bounds of the law.”

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has sounded a cautionary note regarding Ghana’s substantial indebtedness to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), highlighting its potential impact on the country’s attractiveness as an investment destination.

Ghana currently holds the unenviable position of being the most indebted nation to the IMF under the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust, with an outstanding loan of 1,689 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDRs). This amounts to nearly 10% of the total outstanding loans within the Trust.

Isaac Adongo, the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, expressed concerns over Ghana’s elevated debt levels and inadequate foreign reserves, stating that these factors are impeding the country’s ability to attract foreign investment.

He noted, “When you assess our creditworthiness in terms of our net international reserves for covering these portfolios, Ghana presents a risky proposition, a fact even the IMF acknowledges.”

Adongo also cautioned that Ghana might not qualify for another IMF program unless it improves its fiscal position, remarking, “Given Ghana’s historical track record of fulfilling its obligations to the IMF, these statistics alone indicate that Ghana may not meet the criteria for another IMF program.”

Ghana’s escalating debt levels have raised significant apprehension among investors. The nation’s public debt-to-GDP ratio presently surpasses 80%, and the government is grappling with a substantial budget deficit. Consequently, the government must borrow extensively to sustain its expenditure, making it challenging to alleviate the debt burden.

Furthermore, Ghana’s foreign reserves are currently at a precarious level, covering less than one month of imports. This vulnerability exposes the country to external shocks, such as surges in commodity prices or depreciation of the cedi’s value.

The government is presently engaged in negotiations for a new program with the IMF, which is anticipated to include measures aimed at curbing the budget deficit, stabilizing the economy, and fostering growth.

Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the government will succeed in implementing the requisite reforms to meet the qualifications for the program.

Alan to unveil next step of political ambitions today

Former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen is set to reveal the next step of his political ambitions during a scheduled press conference on Monday, September 25, 2023.

Despite finishing third in the initial round of the NPP’s flagbearer selection, which reduced the candidate pool from ten to five contenders, Mr. Kyerematen opted to withdraw from the November 4 congress.

He alleged bias on the part of the party’s leadership in favor of a specific candidate.

Amidst widespread speculation, there is an expectation that Mr. Kyerematen might choose to sever ties with the party and pursue the presidency as an independent candidate.

However, the veil of uncertainty surrounding his next move will be lifted later today when he reveals his future intentions.

The possibility also exists that he may opt to continue his political journey within the party, potentially endorsing one of the remaining four candidates vying for the coveted flagbearer position, or venture forth independently in pursuit of his political ambitions.

  • Mohbad: AFRIMA mourns artiste, emphasizes need for music industry regulation

Mohbad: AFRIMA mourns artiste, emphasizes need for music industry regulation

The All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, has underscored the critical significance of establishing regulations and formal structures within the music and entertainment sector.

This message comes as AFRIMA stands in solidarity with millions of African youths and music enthusiasts in expressing profound sadness over the unexpected passing of Nigeria’s pop sensation, Mohbad, whose tragic death occurred under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

At present, law enforcement authorities are actively engaged in an investigation to determine the precise cause of his untimely demise. Mohbad, a 27-year-old emerging music talent renowned by the alias “Imole” (which means “Light”), was celebrated for his youthful exuberance, boundless creativity, and extraordinary lyrical prowess, which had captivated the hearts of countless fans worldwide.

The President and Executive Producer of AFRIMA, Mike Dada, conveyed deep sorrow at the loss of this promising talent within Africa’s burgeoning music industry, characterized by its recent growth and vibrancy.

In light of this tragic event, he highlighted the urgent need for the music and entertainment sector to undergo institutionalization, emphasizing that this remains a top priority in addressing the longstanding issue of unprofessional practices that have persisted within the industry across the African continent.

He writes:  “On behalf of the International Committee of AFRIMA, we condole with Nigeria’s music industry, parents and fans of Mohbad, over his painful demise.

“The death of Mohbad is a tragic event that has left us all deeply saddened. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.

“With his demise, Africa has lost a promising talent in our growing music and entertainment industry. We pray God to grant him eternal rest, and grant his parents, family, and teeming fans the fortitude to bear his irreplaceable loss.”

“AFRIMA is spearheading efforts to mobilise stakeholders in the creative industry in Africa, with a focus on Nigeria, to establish institutionalized operations and regulate the music entertainment industry.

According to Dada, this includes the enactment of legislation that sets industry standards, regulations and compliance for music record labels, performing artistes, music publishing companies, entertainment lawyers and other professionals.

“It is necessary to have a law that regulates the music industry to prevent it from becoming an unregulated free-for-all, as currently, the entry requirements are low such that anyone can just wake up and establish a music record label.

“To address this issue, African countries must establish a Music Institute to certify practitioners regularly.

AFRIMA is leveraging its platform to organize a stakeholder summit aimed at engaging the legislative arm of governments across Africa through the African Union.

“AFRIMA urges stakeholders, including relevant government officials and agencies, artistes, record labels, A&R, producers, promoters, artiste’s managers, brands, songwriters, DJs & video vixens, video directors, equipment production and rental companies, publishing companies, streaming service companies, entertainment lawyers, royalty companies among others, to participate in this crucial process. We urge stakeholders to submit their proposed legislation for review and consideration,” the AFRIMA President stated.

#Occupyjubileehouse demo: I’m tired talking about this country’s problems “- Nana Aba on why she didn’t join protest

Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah, has explained that she chose not to participate in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest because she had grown weary of discussing Ghana’s issues without seeing any tangible results.

In response to a follower’s question on Twitter about her stance on the protests, the outspoken broadcaster encouraged Ghanaians to engage in activism and free their minds, as they might be fortunate enough to have the government respond to their demands.

“I’m massively sick and tired talking about this country’s problems. Go ahead and free your mind…maybe for once, the administration will listen,” she wrote.

Nana Aba Anamoah is well-known for addressing issues of national importance through her various social media platforms. She has consistently used her voice to raise concerns about matters of national significance.

However, despite her vocal presence on social media, Nana Aba Anamoah was notably absent from the #OccupyJubileeHouse protest. This absence led some of her followers to question her silence on the matter. It appears that her response has now provided an explanation for her absence.

The protest, organized by the Accra-based civil society group Democracy Hub, took place on Nkrumah Memorial Day and aimed to call on the President and the Economic Management Team to address economic mismanagement and corruption within the government.

Several Ghanaian celebrities, including Efya Nocturnal, Efia Odo, Stonebwoy, Pappy Kojo, Kwaw Kese, and D Black, joined the protestors to demand better living conditions. However, on the first day of the protest, some demonstrators were arrested, leading to criticism of the police for allegedly infringing on citizens’ democratic rights.

Following Chelsea‘s loss to Aston Villa on Sunday, September 24, 2023, a segment of fans expressed their discontent with the team’s recent performances by booing the players.

The Blues, who have not secured a win in their last three games, suffered a 1-0 defeat at home, marking their second consecutive home loss.

According to talkSPORT, audible boos resonated from the crowd after another disappointing performance at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Chelsea dominating most of the match, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

Center-back Axel Disasi appeared to put Chelsea ahead in the first half, but his goal was disallowed due to offside.

In the second half, Chelsea’s Malo Gusto received a red card for a reckless tackle on Lucas Digne, reducing the team to ten men.

Despite the disadvantage, Chelsea had several opportunities to take the lead, with Raheem Sterling missing a crucial chance.

Aston Villa eventually seized the lead through Ollie Watkins, who scored from a challenging angle after a smooth counterattack.

This goal secured three points for Aston Villa, elevating them to 6th place in the table, while Chelsea dropped to 14th following the home defeat.

Chelsea’s goal drought continued as they failed to score in three consecutive games.

Ernest Opoku admits lying about “blow job” story

Gospel musician Ernest Opoku has admitted that he lied when he claimed to have received a “blow job” from a woman in a VIP bus.

He made this revelation in an interview with Delay on her popular show” The Delay Show”.

Ernest Opoku had previously attracted significant attention after he claimed to have had a sexually explicit encounter in a vehicle. However, during the interview with the show’s host, Deloris Frimpong Manso, he recanted his previous statement and firmly asserted that the confession was entirely false.

Below is the conversation between Delay and Ernest Opoku

Delay: So, in the interview where you claimed that a certain lady gave you a blow job in either a train or a car, were you joking?

Ernest: Oh! It is not true.

    Delay: You didn’t say that.

Ernest: It is true that I said it, but it was false.

Delay: So, why did you say it?

Ernest: It is not true because someone sitting in a VIP bus where other people are present, how could such an act occur?

Delay: So why did you make these claims?

Ernest: For me, I said my own thing. Whatever they want to use it for, it is up to them, but it is not true, and nothing of that sort ever happened.

    Background

Ernest Opoku had previously recounted an incident that he claimed took place on public transport from Kumasi to Accra, where he alleged that he was sexually abused by a stranger woman who took advantage of him.

According to his account, while he was in a deep sleep while listening to a song from his senior colleague, gospel singer Elder Mireku, a fellow passenger seated next to him on a VIP bus engaged in a sexual act without his consent. He woke up to find his manhood in her mouth and reacted by delivering a heavy slap to her back.

To his surprise, the stranger who had initiated the act thought it was all a dream.

Ernest Opoku, who was celebrating his 20th anniversary in gospel ministry, shared this story during a radio interview on Akoma FM in March 2023.

“I boarded a VIP bus to Accra, it was around 4 PM. I sat next to a lady in the dual seat. She entered into a deep sleep and I found her head on my shoulder. I prompted her to wake up and found myself pushing her away from me.

“I was enjoying one of Elder Mireku’s popular songs through the headphones. Then I dozed off and in a dream, I felt something moving around my body. I woke up to see my penis in the woman’s mouth. I screamed Jesus!…

“I wasn’t expecting that and so I hit her from behind. She apologized and she was dreaming…I don’t remember when she opened my zip,” he disclosed at the time.

  • Ghana is facing leadership crisis – Prof Adu-Gyamfi

Ghana is facing leadership crisis – Prof Adu-Gyamfi

Political science lecturer, Prof. Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, has asserted that Ghana is currently grappling with a leadership crisis. He contends that none of the individuals vying for the presidency in the country demonstrate a genuine sensitivity to the needs of the citizens.

“Ghana is in a leadership crisis because all the leaders emerging are not conscious, and by consciousness, I mean pan-Africanism consciousness. African socialism is what I’m referring to,” he said.

Prof. Samuel Adu-Gyamfi also highlighted that Ghana, along with other African nations, is currently in a neo-colonialist state.

Speaking on Nhyira FM,he said “we are presently at the last stage of imperialism, as Nkrumah predicted, because our leaders have become so dis-empathetic. They have no consciousness that the African mind, the African brain, the African intellectual, the African continent, and the African community must be built,”

He criticized people in power as being self-serving and accused them of turning governance into a family business. He alleged that they engage in corruption to enrich themselves and their families, and that politics in Ghana and Africa is marred by politicians amassing wealth while neglecting the welfare of the masses.

“Our politics is not worth looking at. Now in French West Africa, look at the rate at which coups are rising. Significantly, this is contingent on two major factors. First of all, the French take millions, if not billions, of dollars from Africa annually based on colonial arrangements, and then our own leaders steal from the people and siphon money from our shores to hide in foreign countries.

“They assume ministerial positions and, within the space of a year, own mansions all over the place. Are you a magician? Even Jesus Christ did not conjure mansions out of thin air,” he observed.

He partly attributed the leadership crisis to the failure to adequately educate and train young individuals.

“We are not giving room for learned and dedicated young minds to serve because it doesn’t serve our personal interests. Because of this, you and I will not be called to service. They will not appoint anyone who will challenge the status quo,” said the political scientist.

  • Ghana set to host Africa’s inaugural lithium refinery

Ghana set to host Africa’s inaugural lithium refinery

Efforts are underway to establish Africa’s inaugural lithium refinery in Takoradi, Western Region, with a $500-million investment led by CAA Mining Ltd, Luxembourg’s Livista Energy, and its Ghanaian subsidiary, Livista Ghana Ltd.

This lithium processing facility aligns with the government’s Green Minerals Policy, requiring value addition to lithium within the country instead of exporting it in its raw state.

The CEO of CAA Mining Limited, Douglas D. Chikohora, expects the refinery to be fully operational by 2026 on a 200-acre land parcel near Takoradi Port City, with discussions already initiated with the Ghana Gas Company Limited for power supply and service infrastructure.

The commencement of construction for the refinery is contingent on the issuance of a prospecting license to Lithium Resources Ghana Ltd (LRGL), a collaboration between CAA Mining Ltd and local firm Empire Rare Earth and Metal Group Limited. LRGL has already invested $2 million in lithium exploration on a 646-square-kilometer concession within the lithium corridor spanning Awutu-Bereku and Mankessim in the Central Region. Pending the Minerals Commission’s approval of a prospecting license, the company intends to initiate a $10 million lithium drilling program by year-end.

“Once we get the prospecting licence and start drilling, the volumes we get will determine the size of the refinery we should put up,” he said.

Mr. Chikohora affirmed that the lithium consortium is cognizant of Ghana’s green minerals policy and is committed to investing in the entire value chain.

He further emphasized that Ghana’s strategic location for the refinery allows it to utilize not only the country’s lithium resources but also those from other African nations like the DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Mali, Namibia, and South Africa.

“There are only two places where lithium is refined in the world, and that is China and the US. In Africa, there is no refinery for lithium, so if we set up the refinery in Ghana, it will be the third in the world and first in Africa.Based on this, the refinery in Ghana will be pan-African in nature since the lithium from other parts of the continent will be refined here,” Mr Chikohora said.He added that there would be an industrial boom in the country when the refinery was set up because other industries such as battery manufacturers and vehicle assembly plants would blossom.“Apart from the mining and refining jobs, people are going to be producing refined lithium here. There will be battery producing companies, vehicle assembly plants and many other job opportunities,” he stressed.

In regard to local content, Mr. Chikohora highlighted that LRGL operates as a joint venture involving both foreign and local companies, and it follows an indigenous business model that extends across the entire value chain. Additionally, LRGL has initiated talks with the Mining Income Investment Fund (MIIF) to participate in the investment within the lithium value chain as a shareholder, further enhancing the local content aspect.

“We have signed a market development agreement with MIIF, so they know what we are doing,” he said.

Mr Chikohora also said the consortium was planning to launch its social responsibility programme this year to outline the area of support it would offer host communities.

He said the company had been in constant touch with the host communities for the priority areas of the CSR activities.

“We can launch the social responsibility programme by the end of September, depending on the state of the licence,” he said.

  • FIFA places transfer ban on Hearts of Oak over coach’s unpaid salary

FIFA places transfer ban on Hearts of Oak over coach’s unpaid salary

FIFA has imposed transfer ban on Hearts of Oak over unpaid coach salary. The international football governing body took this action due to the club’s failure to settle a $14,002 debt to former coach Slavko Matic.

FIFA has also directed the Ghana Football Association to enforce this decision within the country.

The dispute traces back to March 2023 when Serbian coach Slavko Matic was dismissed amid tensions, including a confrontation with angry fans during a training session.

Concerned about his safety, Matic filed a formal complaint with the Ghana Police. In response, Hearts of Oak stated their inability to guarantee his security.

Following these events, Matic sought FIFA’s intervention, resulting in a July ruling that favored the coach, instructing Hearts of Oak to pay him $14,002 for contract breach.

With the club’s non-compliance, FIFA has enforced the transfer ban, preventing the registration of new players until the debt is settled.

OccupyJulorbiHouse: Organisers of the demo failed – Alhassan Tampuli

The government has criticized the organizers of the OccupyJulorbiHouse protests, branding them as ineffective due to their failure to submit a petition detailing their grievances.

In an interview with Citi News, Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana, the Member of Parliament for Gushegu and Deputy Minister of Transport, stated that he had been appointed by the government to receive the petition from the Democracy Hub group.

Nevertheless, he expressed disappointment that the group did not present any concerns during the protest.

“It became very necessary for us to meet them. At some point, I was told for instance that all of them wanted to come. So we said okay we will move to where you are if you just want to present a petition. I will move under escort to wherever they were.

“That was when I was told that actually there was no petition. So it is like a right that has been exercised but the point hasn’t been drummed home. So the leadership actually failed.”

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Accra for three days of anti-government protests related to economic hardship, resulting in dozens of arrests on the first day.

Protesters, some holding signs or the Ghanaian flag, expressed their concerns about the high cost of living and a lack of employment opportunities as they marched under the watchful eye of riot police.

Ghana, a nation known for its gold, oil, and cocoa production, has been grappling with its most severe economic crisis in a generation, largely caused by skyrocketing public debt.

The protest persisted despite the police’s attempt to secure an injunction on Wednesday, September 20, preventing the Democracy Hub group from proceeding with their planned protest.

Despite the police’s orders, the group leaders insisted on moving forward with the protest. On Thursday, September 21, the police prevented the group from assembling at Jubilee House, resulting in the arrest of 49 Democracy Hub members.

Undeterred, the group continued their protest on Friday and Saturday, but the police blocked their attempts to march to Jubilee House.

“I tweet when i want to,you don’t force me to” – Serwaa Amihere

Ghanaian broadcaster, Serwaa Amihere, has expressed her frustration with the frequent demands from certain segments of the public for her to comment on the OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

She stated that she has used her social media platforms to advocate for causes aimed at urging the government to assist vulnerable individuals in society.

She emphasized that nobody can compel her to post about the OccupyJulorbiHouse protest, which has garnered significant attention on social media. However, she added that she will share her thoughts on the matter of her own accord.

Serwaa Amihere’s remarks were prompted by calls from numerous Ghanaians on social media for her to lend her voice to the OccupyJulorbiHouse protest in order to amplify the protesters’ grievances.

In a Twitter post on Friday, September 23, 2023, Serwaa Amihere reflected on the many occasions when she has advocated for problems to be addressed, including the recent flooding problem.

“I tweet when I want to. You don’t force me to. When I was talking about floods on TV and tweeting about them, you were selling sneakers,” she fumed.

“I like your patriotism but don’t tell me what to tweet and what not to tweet! I am not lucky! I WORK! Nothing falls on my lap I work! Speaking for the woman in Zongo, I do it all the time.”

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest, spanning three days, concluded with celebrities playing a significant role in its vigor and effectiveness in conveying their concerns to the government.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, leader of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrators, revealed that his mother was admitted to the hospital after learning of his arrest on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

In a tweet, the outspoken activist stated that his mother was released from the hospital on Saturday, coinciding with Day 3 of the ongoing protest.

“My mum was taken into the hospital on Thursday when news broke of my arrest,” he stated. “She had been on admission the whole time and was only discharged yesterday. I couldn’t even visit her.”

Barker-Vormawor and several demonstrators were apprehended by the police for contravening the Public Order Act and proceeding with their protest.

    Background

#OccupyJulorbiHouse, for good reasons, has been trending for three straight days topping trends as protesters under the guidance of Democracy Hub marched against economic malaise and corruption.

On Day 1 (September 21) of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests by the Democracy Hub, the police illegally rounded up hundreds of protesters who were marching to demand action on the prevailing economic crisis and corruption.

The illegal arrests, especially how they were conducted by the police, triggered harsh criticism of impeding the constitutional right to protest and deploying highhandedness on the part of the police.

Police sent the detainees to the regional headquarters before splitting them up into about eight police stations dotted across the capital, even as colleague protesters and lawyers worked to secure bail for the illegally detained persons.

In this process, other journalists and protesters who massed up, especially at the Accra Regional Command, encountered some amounts of police violence, including shoving, forced detention, seizure of phone and in the case of others, physical assault.

Day 2 and 3 passed without any major incident as police barricaded the main road leading to the presidency, Jubilee House, even before the protesters began their march towards the place.

While Day 2 saw the blocking of one part of the 37-Accra Road, the final day saw the blocking of both sides which meant vehicular traffic was greatly constrained for the better part of the day.

Both Days 2 and 3 saw some celebrities join the protest.
