#OccupyJulorbiHouse demo: We do not oppose demonstrations – Police

The Ghana Police Service has clarified its position on demonstrations, highlighting that it fully supports peaceful protests in all forms.

In a statement signed by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service, it was explained that the Service has a long history of providing security for demonstrators in previous instances.

After the conclusion of the three-day demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub, the Police expressed their gratitude to the public, particularly those in Accra, for their support and cooperation while the Police carried out their duty of maintaining law and order during the protest.

The Service also expressed appreciation to the organizers for their cooperation during the demonstrations. They expressed their intention to hold a debriefing session with the organizers to foster productive engagements for future demonstrations.

“The Police would also like to apologize to members of the public who were inconvenienced in one way or the other, especially those who were caught up in the vehicular holdups during the demonstration. As the demonstration has come to an end, we look forward to meeting with the organizers for a debriefing session with them with the aim of fostering a more fruitful engagement in the future,” GPS said in its statement.

On Wednesday, September 20, the police filed an injunction application to prevent the group from proceeding with their planned protest.

In response, the group’s leaders insisted on continuing with the protest. However, on Thursday, September 21, the police halted the group from gathering at Jubilee House for defying their orders, resulting in the arrest of 49 members of Democracy Hub. Additionally, a BBC journalist and his cameraman were detained, and Metro TV’s Bridget Otoo was roughed up by the police on Thursday.

Despite these actions, the group continued its protest on Friday and Saturday, but the police blocked them from marching to Jubilee House.

Ken Agyapong applauds Sammi Awuku for ensuring peace between him and Bawumia

Kennedy Agyapong, a hopeful flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has praised Sammi Awuku, the Director of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and former NPP National Organizer, for his efforts in promoting peace within the party.

In an interview on Kessben TV on September 16, 2023, Agyapong disclosed that Sammi Awuku facilitated a discussion between himself and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to address the issues surrounding his previous confrontational remarks.

During the interview, Agyapong highlighted his positive interactions with specific individuals associated with the vice president’s presidential campaign, with particular appreciation for Sammi Awuku, whom he credits with playing a significant role in diffusing tensions.

“I am fine with him (Bawumia), one sensible person within his camp is Sammi Awuku. He is a young boy, and he knows how to play his cards well. Because of our relationship, sometimes he comes to my house, and we discuss things.

“Another person is Fred Oware. They come to me, and we talk. Sammy Awuku, when I gave the showdown, he called the Vice President for me to talk to him and explain things to him, and today, see the way he has taken the issue playfully and repeats showdown everywhere.”

Kennedy Agyapong will vie for the flagbearer position alongside three other contenders: Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Addiah Nimoh.

The NPP has scheduled November 4, 2023, for the election to choose a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party’s leader.

  • Ama Governor publicly admits she sleeps with women

Ama Governor publicly admits she sleeps with women

Social media influencer and aspiring lawyer, Elorm Ama Ababio, widely recognized as Ama Governor, has publicly acknowledged her queer sexuality for the first time.

Her sexual orientation played a role in her not being called to the bar last year. A petition was submitted to the General Legal Council (GLC) by an anonymous “concerned citizen” who argued that her actions were inappropriate for an aspiring lawyer.

It’s worth noting that LGBTQ individuals and activities face disapproval from a significant portion of Ghanaian society due to deep-rooted cultural beliefs.

Despite successfully passing the bar exams, it appears that the petition had an impact, leading to the removal of Elorm Ama Ababio’s name from the list of individuals scheduled to be called to the bar in 2022 by the General Legal Council (GLC).

Her situation sparked public outrage, with many asserting that she had been treated unfairly.

More recently, Ama Governor has been granted the opportunity to undergo the application process to be called to the bar during the October/November 2023 session.

Addressing the matter during the OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations held on September 23, 2023, she maintained that she had not been treated fairly by the GLC. She argued that, especially considering her strong defense and the refutation of the allegations made by the anonymous “concerned citizen,” she deserved to be called to the bar.

She emphasized that only one of the allegations made by the petitioner was accurate, and even that should not have been sufficient grounds to prevent her from pursuing a legal career.

“And the last one is the fact of my sexuality that I sleep with women. I said that is not a lie; I do sleep with women, that is a fact. But it is not grounds for me to not be called to the bar, and that is it…

“My sexuality, I am queer, I am pansexual; yes, I sleep with women, but it is not a ground upon which you can say I am not fit to be called to the bar, and that was our defence, and we won,” she told a Joy News journalist covering the demonstration.

OccupyJubilorHouse demo: National Security minister offered me $1million to call of the protest – Barker-Vormawor alleges

Oliver Barker -Vormawor, the primary advocate of #FixtheCountry, during the #OccupyJubilorHouse protest on September 21, 2023  said that the government had paid his organization a million dollars to end their protest.

This assertion by Barker-Vormawor has been disputed by the Ministry of National Security, which has challenged him to provide evidence to substantiate his claims.

In an interview with Joy News, the #FixtheCountry advocate mentioned that he possesses a recording of his meeting with the Minister of National Security, which he intends to release in the near future.

“I want to put it on record. The meeting I am talking about happened exclusively between myself and the Minister for National Security. The offer was made to me. I will release an audio into the public domain which will confirm that the minister invited me to a secret safehouse location that we should have individual meetings between him and myself. At that meeting, he made that offer to myself. No other fixthecountry convener was involved”, he said.

He added that the meeting took place prior to the initial #FixTheCountry protest.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor further revealed that, in addition to his meeting with the Minister of National Security, he had a second meeting with the Finance Minister.

“Another secret meeting was held with myself and two lawyers representing fixthecountry including the Minister of Finance which was held. We have a recording that was held. What I am saying and want to be clear on is that a meeting was held between myself and the Minister of National Security at a safe house. He did request that I should meet him and I have a secret recording to confirm this. This was before the very first FixTheCountry demonstration”, he said.

MohBad’s candlelight vigil: Schwarzenegger spotted spraying money

Ghanaian media personality and socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger, was captured in a video where she was seen showering money at the candlelight vigil held in memory of the late Nigerian singer, MohBad, on Friday, September 22, 2023.

MohBad tragically passed away on September 12, 2023, following a brief illness, leaving behind his wife and a young son. His untimely death sparked speculations and raised questions, with some suggesting foul play may have been involved.

In response to these concerns, a candlelight vigil with the hashtag #JusticeForMohBad was organized in both Nigeria and Ghana to remember him.

In Ghana, the vigil took place at NK Shisha Office and drew the participation of various Ghanaians, including Afia Schwarzenegger. In a video shared on Instagram by Nkonkonsa, Afia Schwarzenegger was seen dancing energetically to MohBad’s song “Feel Good” while generously spraying money over a picture of the late singer displayed at the event.

Police successfully conduct autopsy on Mohbad’s body

The autopsy on the exhumed body of the renowned singer, Promise Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has been successfully concluded. This information was revealed by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday night.

Mohbad passed away last Tuesday, prompting speculations that his death might have resulted from unnatural causes. In response, the Lagos State Police Command established a 13-member special investigation team to examine the circumstances surrounding the sudden demise of the singer.

LEADERSHIP reported that Mohbad’s body was exhumed for the autopsy earlier on Thursday morning.

Taking to its verified X platform (formerly Twitter) on Thursday night with the hashtag #JusticeforMohbad, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) said the autopsy procedure was successfully carried out and it will provide further details when the results were ready.

The Police wrote: “The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the public that the autopsy procedure for Mr. Mohbad has been successfully completed. Further information will be provided as soon as the results are available.”

Davido declines bottled water at Mohbad’s candlelight memorial

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Davido paid tribute to his late colleague, Mohbad, in a quiet yet highly lyrical manner, showing solidarity and a strong knowledge of life’s hidden risks.

Friends, fans, and fellow artists gathered to pay their respects during Mohbad’s candlelight service, which was filled with melancholy and nostalgia. The light from the candles signified the passing part of life, which was heavy with whispered farewells and unshed tears

Amidst this somber assembly, a moment unfolded, silent yet profound, reflecting the underlying grief in many hearts. While on stage, Davido was offered a bottle of water, which he declined. To an outsider, this might appear inconsequential, a mere preference. Yet, those familiar with Mohbad’s tragic passing saw depth in this simple act. It wasn’t just a rejection; it was an echo of Mohbad’s final painful revelation, a whisper of camaraderie, and possibly, a shadow of self-preservation.

Before his untimely demise, Mohbad shared a haunting video from his hospital bed, alleging that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had given him a poisoned water bottle. This claim was fraught with anguish and betrayal, a chilling reminder of the dangers that sometimes hide behind innocence.

Davido’s refusal held greater significance than a personal choice; it was a silent vigil for a fellow artist who had suffered. It was an acknowledgment of unspoken fears, a quiet commitment to stay cautious and vigilant.

PNC displeased over protests during Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday celebration

The People’s National Convention (PNC) expresses disappointment over the demonstration that marred Dr. Kwame Nkrumah‘s birthday celebration. Despite the police warning against such protests, the PNC is disheartened by the negativity brought to a day meant for honoring Nkrumah’s legacy through reflection.

A statement from the Party’s General Secretary, Janet Asana Nabla, emphasizes that registering grievances doesn’t have to be through demonstrations, especially on a day when Dr. Nkrumah advocated for unity, the rule of law, and solidarity.

The statement suggests that the #OccupyJulorbiHouse# demonstrators could have utilized lectures and symposiums to convey their concerns since they were unable to obtain police permission, rather than resorting to unlawful actions.

Additionally, it points out that Ghana is in a precarious situation within the volatile West African subregion, plagued by coup d’états, a situation well-known to the demonstrators.

NADMO warns of more severe rains in the coming days

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a warning about anticipated heavy rainfall.

This comes in response to the flooding in certain areas of Accra following nearly an hour of rain on Friday.

George Ayisi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NADMO, stated that the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), with whom the organization maintains regular communication, has forecasted additional rainfall.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM in Accra, he emphasized the importance of the public preparing for more rainfall in the days ahead.

“We are in constant touch with GMeT and they keep updating us every time. They say the rains are going to be severe, they are going to be heavy so we should be careful. Those who are travelling in some cases it will be stormy, windy. If you are travelling to places where there are trees and co just be careful. If you are in areas where the roofing of houses or homes areas not too good, let’s be careful in those areas.”

“If we are in areas where we are not sure and they are flood prone let’s try and identify safe havens in the city and then let’s try and move to safer grounds for our ourselves and our relatives,” he stated.

Nicki Minaj’s spouse on house arrest for threatening Cardi B’s husband

Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, received a “home detention program” sentence of “up to 120 days” following a video he posted, threatening rapper Offset, the husband of Cardi B as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Legal documents filed in the Central District of California revealed that Petty made these alleged threats “in the presence of someone with a criminal record.”

The contentious videos circulated on social media. In these clips, Petty and two others can be seen issuing threats while standing on a New York street. Petty can be heard saying, “Offset, where you at?” as he threatens to harm him.

In a separate video, a companion of Petty’s can be heard making ominous comments: “Plan that vacation, you should be planning your funeral.” Nonetheless, Offset, who is married to rapper Cardi B, downplayed these alleged threats as he boarded a private jet, according to his Instagram story, as per the Los Angeles Times.

The ongoing feud between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, the respective wives of Offset and Petty, dates back to a 2018 altercation at New York Fashion Week. Petty’s video surfaced a few days after Nicki Minaj hosted the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, where Cardi B also performed.

Last year, Face2Face Africa reported that Petty received probation and home detention as part of his sentence after pleading guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in Los Angeles.

In 2020, Petty was arrested in California for failing to register as a sex offender upon entering the state. He pleaded guilty to the federal charge in 2021, leading to a three-year probation sentence and one year of in-home detention, along with a $55,000 fine, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In 1995, Petty was sentenced to 18 to 54 months in prison after pleading guilty to the attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl. At the time of the incident, Petty was also 16 years old. He served four and a half years of his sentence before being released. However, the terms of his conviction require him to register as a sex offender whenever he relocates.

Following their marriage in October 2019, Petty and Nicki Minaj relocated to California.

Roadblocks prevent protestors of #OccupyJulorbiHouse from advancing toward Jubilee House

Protestors participating in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration have been prevented by the police from advancing towards the Jubilee House.

Consequently, the protestors have chosen to sit down on the road, singing the national anthem to express their dissent.

Notably, several Ghanaian celebrities, including Efia Odo, EL, Kelvyn Boy, John Dumelo, and comedian Warris, aligned themselves with the Democracy Hub group for Day 2 of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.

These celebrities were seen seated on the ground as a symbolic gesture of their discontent.

Earlier on Friday morning, these celebrities, along with other demonstrators, gathered at the 37 lorry park with the intention of marching to the Jubilee House.

The group has been critical of the government on multiple occasions and has been actively organizing a series of protests to urge the government to implement measures aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by Ghanaians.

OccupyJulorbiHouse: Efia Odo blasts celebrities not protesting against the bad economy

Social media influencer and actress, Efia Odo, has expressed disappointment with some Ghanaian celebrities, citing their apparent lack of courage when it comes to making substantial contributions to matters of national importance.

In an Instagram live Efia Odo characterized celebrities as a group of individuals who derive satisfaction from loudly promoting themselves rather than engaging in meaningful actions for the greater cause.

According to her it is crucial for fellow celebrities to rally behind this movement, underscoring their capacity to instigate substantial change.

“We can’t demonstrate, we can’t voice how we feel? We are being oppressed, all the fake a$$ celebrities should kiss my ass, are you not oppressed?,”she added.

Her statement follows the actions of certain celebrities who have chosen to distance themselves from the ongoing OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

This protest serves as a platform for Ghanaians to voice their dissatisfaction with the poor state of the economy.

The protests had initially been planned to occur between September 21 and September 23, 2023.

Nevertheless, the inaugural day of the demonstrations was marred by reports of incidents involving the Ghana Police Service.
These reports included claims of physical mistreatment of protesters and the apprehension of roughly 49 demonstrators.

Ghanaian actor turned politician, John Dumelo, has taken part in the ongoing protest dubbed #OccupyJulorbiHouse, which is being held at the Jubilee House.

During an interview with the media, Dumelo emphasized that merely expressing support for the protest online was insufficient to capture the government’s attention regarding Ghanaians’ concerns.

Therefore, he made the decision to physically participate in the demonstration to boost the crowd and make their message more impactful.

He clarified that his decision to join the protest was motivated by his citizenship rather than his celebrity status.

Mr Dumelo emphasized that not all celebrities may be visible on the streets protesting due to their various commitments and responsibilities.

Nevertheless, he encouraged both fellow celebrities and the general public to take part in the OccupyJulorbiHouse protest, emphasizing the importance of raising their collective voices to ensure the government acknowledges their grievances.

“Look social media be wide, many people are expecting celebrities to talk but to be honest not all celebrities can here. Celebrities are also Ghanaians today I am here as a Ghanaian citizen and not a celebrity.

“Everybody is contributing in a certain way it’s not everybody who can be here. Some will tweet and make noise about it. Not everyone can come. Today we are here to protest and see how things will go,” he added.

The second day of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations, has seen the participation of many including Ghanaian rapper EL.

The three-day protest, organized by the Democracy Hub pressure group, initially gained momentum on social media and garnered significant backing from influential young individuals both online and offline.

Addressing the media, the rapper highlighted reasons for joining this cause, emphasizing his concern for the unborn generation. He expressed unease over the current state of the economy and its potential impact on future generations.

“Yesterday was impromptu for me, I was not around. I guess it better late than never. I am a Ghanaian and I tend to travel a lot and whenever I come to Ghana I release that things have actually deteriorated to a certain extent and it’s been chipping away at the economy and the whole general space for a very long time.

Takoradi: Police manhunt fake doctor who robbed patients

The police is actively pursuing a young man who duped officials at the Takoradi Government Hospital by falsely claiming to be a doctor.

The imposter, identified as Jude, exploited his position within the hospital, also known as The European Hospital, to deceive unsuspecting patients and steal their belongings.

According to a reports, Jude initially gained access to the hospital by presenting a counterfeit internship letter from the University of Ghana Medical School, which allowed him to work as a junior doctor.

After a few days on the job, he devised a cunning scheme to rob patients.

Jude convinced patients to hand over their phones, assuring them that it was for their safety as he claimed there were thieves targeting the hospital.

He even persuaded them to unlock their phones, citing potential urgent calls. A source informed the news website about Jude’s actions.

The report further disclosed that Jude exploited his access to the unlocked phones to communicate with the patients’ close contacts. Under the pretense that the situation was dire, he began demanding money from them.

“He posed as the patients while using their phones and requested money for medical care from their contacts. These contacts believed they were speaking with the actual phone owners and, as a result, some of them sent undisclosed amounts of money to him,” the sources added.

Notably, a Nigerian woman fell victim to Jude’s scam and lost a significant amount of money through her contacts. He collaborated with another Nigerian woman in Takoradi, whom he secretly employed to further his malicious plans.

To gain credibility with the Nigerian patient’s contacts, Jude engaged the services of a Nigerian prostitute in Vienna City, Takoradi. After their encounter, he convinced the sex worker (referred to as Bella) to aid him in his nefarious agenda.

Bella recounted her experience, stating that Jude initially inquired about her services, negotiated the price, and took her to her place. Afterward, he requested her mobile money details, explaining that someone would send money to him. Jude was in possession of four phones, and calls began coming in from Nigeria. Bella complied with his requests at first but eventually grew suspicious.

She confronted Jude and threatened to report him to the police, but he fled before she could take action. Bella returned the money to the victims and handed over Jude’s belongings to the hospital authorities.

Furthermore, Jude managed to deceive a pastor from the Assemblies of God Church he attended in Takoradi. He was even accommodated at the mission house of the Holy Hill Assemblies of God Church, where he had presented himself as a devout member. The church leader, Apostle Jerry, expressed shock upon learning about Jude’s true identity and actions.

The police in Takoradi are currently conducting an investigation into the matter, while Jude remains a fugitive.

  • Ex-pastor of Lighthouse Chapel pleads not guilty in theft case

Ex-pastor of Lighthouse Chapel pleads not guilty in theft case

An Accra Circuit Court has acquitted and discharged Lawrence Nii Narku Odonkor, also known as Larry, the former head pastor of the Akyem Oda branch of Lighthouse Chapel International (LCI), who was accused of stealing over GH¢7,000 belonging to the church.

Odonkor had pleaded not guilty to two counts of stealing and dishonestly appropriating the church’s GH¢7,054, which was intended for the payment of his SSNIT contributions and taxes.

In a judgment rendered on September 15, 2023, the Court, presided over by Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, concluded that while there was an appropriation of the funds by Odonkor, it was not done dishonestly.

The Court determined that Odonkor, in his role as the administrative head of the Oda Branch of the church, had appropriately recorded and signed in the church’s accounts books the monies designated for the payment of his SSNIT contributions and GAR taxes on behalf of the church.

Although the money was deposited into his personal account, the Court noted that when Odonkor resigned from the Church, he had asked a senior bishop if he had any outstanding financial obligations, and the response was negative.

Following a full trial lasting one year and seven months, the Court acquitted and discharged Odonkor.

Odonkor is one of six pastors who have filed lawsuits against Lighthouse Chapel International over their Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions.

The criminal case was initiated by police prosecutors based on a complaint from the church.

    Prosecution’s account of the case:
According to the prosecution, Odonkor, as a Bishop of Lighthouse Chapel International, served as the head pastor and administrative head of the Akyem Oda branch of the church between January and April 2020. As part of his responsibilities, he was responsible for ensuring the payment of SSNIT contributions and taxes for both himself and the employees under his supervision.

The prosecution alleged that in March 2020, Odonkor wrote a cheque for GH¢8,527, which included GH¢5,000 for his February salary, GH¢1,667 for his SSNIT contributions for January, and GH¢1,850 for his taxes for February. However, he deposited all the funds into his personal account, utilized them, and failed to remit the SSNIT contributions and taxes to the relevant authorities.

In April 2020, Odonkor reportedly repeated this conduct, writing a GH¢8,527 cheque, with GH¢5,000 for his March salary, GH¢1,667 for his SSNIT contributions for March, and GH¢1,850 for his taxes for April.

Once again, he deposited the entire sum into his personal account, utilized it, and failed to pay the SSNIT contributions and taxes to the appropriate authorities.

The prosecution further claimed that in September 2020, Odonkor complained to SSNIT that the church had neglected to pay his SSNIT contributions.

The church was subsequently alerted to Odonkor’s failure to make the payments, and he was required to settle the outstanding amount along with penalties totaling GH¢10,963.91.

The case was subsequently lodged with the CID Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service, leading to Odonkor’s arrest. However, the prosecution failed to substantiate these claims during the trial, resulting in Odonkor’s acquittal and discharge.

  • #OccupyJulorbiHouse: Govt tried to silence me with cash, appointments – Barker-Vormawor

#OccupyJulorbiHouse: Govt tried to silence me with cash, appointments – Barker-Vormawor

The convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor, has leveled serious allegations against the Akufo-Addo government and the National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah.

Barker-Vormawor claims that they attempted to bribe him and his colleagues with money and appointments to halt their activism.

Speaking to the media he revealed that and he further alleges that the National Security Minister threatened them with arrest if they continued their protests.

Addressing the media on September 22, after his release and that of his fellow activists from custody, Barker-Vormawor asserted that they had declined the government’s offer during a meeting with the National Security Minister at a undisclosed location.

“Unknown to the government, we have recordings, while I was in the UK, the National Security Minister [Kan Dapaah], called and invited me for a sit-down. The government offered to pay for my flight, in order to meet here in Ghana.

“This was something that was never disclosed to the public, but we met at a safe house, for us to stop our activism, this was way before we started the first #FixTheCountry demonstration. We were offered not only money but appointments, and if we agreed to stop this, we were going to be free, but the most important thing was not to bring citizens onto the streets.

“When we rejected that, Kan Dapaah, the National Security Minister, said to my face that if we decide to continue on this course of action, we will be arrested. We will be dealt with and that, it will be over his dead body any demonstrations will happen. At the time we were even in Supreme Court at the time”

Barker-Vormawor also alleged that the National Security Minister explicitly threatened them, saying that if they persisted with their course of action, they would be arrested and dealt with. He claimed that these discussions occurred before the first #FixTheCountry demonstration took place and while they were involved in a Supreme Court case.

Furthermore, Barker-Vormawor asserted that the government has been attempting to hinder their efforts to mobilize people for street protests for the past two years. He expressed concern for the safety of group members and advised those who are afraid for their lives not to participate.

“So I was not surprised that I was ultimately arrested by the government and continue being charged for treason. For over two years now, the government has tried to prevent us from mobilising people,” he claimed.

“If there’s anybody out there who is afraid for their lives, I implore them not to come, the purchase of our democracy should not be that people should lose their lives, in order to secure it. I don’t subscribe to that view, My belief is that those who have every faith in themselves and feel courage and the compulsion must step out. If it is five people, we are still going to be here,” he advised.

  • #OccupyJulorbiHouse: Legal action should target police, not innocent civilians – Abraham Amaliba

#OccupyJulorbiHouse: Legal action should target police, not innocent civilians – Abraham Amaliba

The Head of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has argued that the individuals who should be brought to court in connection with the #OccupyJulorBiHouse protest are the police officers who mistreated the protestors.

In response to reports of some protestors facing legal action after being unlawfully arrested by the police on the first day of the three-day civic action, the NDC lawyer asserted that instead of innocent citizens who were merely exercising their constitutional rights, it should be the police officers who are prosecuted.

Speaking to the media on September 22, 2023, he stated “today, I’m being told that some of the demonstrators will be sent to court. Those who should be in court this morning are the policemen who attacked innocent Ghanaians, who attacked lawyers, and not the demonstrators who were simply out there to do what the constitution allows them to do.”

Amaliba also questioned why the Ghana Police Service sought legal action when it believed it had the authority to prevent the demonstration in the first place.

He pointed out that going to court signifies that a dispute has been submitted to the court for resolution, and the police’s actions have contradicted this.

“If the police knew that they could stop this demonstration anyway, why did they head to court? If you go to court, what it means is that you have submitted the dispute to court and the court must settle that dispute.

“And so, you don’t go to turn, and turn around and use brute force as if we are in the colonial period,” he added.

After a tense first day of the planned three-day protest against the government by the #OccupyJulorBiHouse demonstrators, the group has proceeded with their second day.

In a statement signed by the organizers of #FixTheCountry, a significant component of the protest’s leadership, they called on people to join and support them despite the events of the first day.

They expressed gratitude to all the professionals who came out to support them, including lawyers and journalists, while condemning the police’s assaults on the peaceful protestors during the first day.

The Democracy Hub, led by a group of young activists, initiated the protest, which aims to picket the government’s headquarters from Thursday, September 21, to Saturday, September 23, 2023. They are demanding action from the President and the Economic Management Team to address economic mismanagement and corruption allegations within the government.

Arrest of suspected Pro-Wagner mercenaries demands heightened awareness – Peace Council

The National Peace Council (NPC) has called for concerted efforts to address emerging threats, exemplified by the recent apprehension of individuals suspected of links to Russia’s Wagner mercenary group.

The NPC views these arrests as a wake-up call for both security agencies and the general populace. The Western Regional Police Command is currently prosecuting three youths from Diabene in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, who were allegedly involved in a public gathering while displaying flags and symbols associated with Wagner and Russia.

As Ghana joins the global observance of International Peace Day, George Amoh, the Executive Secretary of the NPC, emphasized the need for collaborative measures to counteract such burgeoning threats.

Dr. S.K.B Asante, the Omanhene of Asante Asokore and a board member of the NPC, expressed concern over Ghana’s declining position on the Global Peace Index. This decline suggests that the country is allocating resources to conflict management rather than developmental initiatives. Dr. Asante called for a united effort among stakeholders to address long-standing conflicts and reverse this trend.

In the meantime, the Russian Embassy in Ghana has denied any association with the leadership of the alleged pro-Russia Wagner mercenary group apprehended by the police in Takoradi, Western Region.

The suspects, identified as Evans (25), Michael Asiedu (23), and Ernest Asiedu (26), purportedly mobilized around 20 youths to form a military group in the Diabene community park, with alleged support from a sponsor in Australia. However, following a tip-off, the police arrested them.

In a statement posted on its social media page, the Russian Embassy, formerly on Twitter, refuted claims of involvement in the distribution of Russian flags, attire, and placards among the protestors. It further clarified that it has no links to potential sponsors of the group.

“The Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Ghana, as well as other government agencies, have no connections to the aforementioned unauthorized gathering,” the embassy asserted.

Zoomlion expresses disappointment over PAC’s directive against contract renewal

Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s management has expressed disappointment with a directive from the Public Accounts Committee instructing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) not to renew contracts with the waste management company.

During a public accounts committee hearing in Ho, Committee Chairman James Klutse Avedzi emphasized that Parliament had authorized the non-renewal of Zoomlion’s contract, citing a lack of apparent benefits.

Responding to this directive, Zoomlion issued a statement on Thursday, September 21, stating, “the Company finds it unfortunate that such a directive will be given regarding our fumigation contracts with MMDAs, whereas the two parties have not been brought together to discuss any contractual issues.

“It is crucial to highlight that Zoomlion Ghana Limited operates with the utmost integrity and professionalism, and we have consistently upheld our contractual obligations with the MMDAs.”

The company noted that there have been no adverse reports or further queries from the PAC indicating any irregularities in its performance since the committee’s hearing on June 8, 2022.

Zoomlion clarified that it provided evidence to the PAC to demonstrate its commitment to fulfilling contractual obligations, making it “surprising to hear such damaging reports from the Chair of PAC.”

“Zoomlion on 8th June 2022 actively participated in a PAC hearing to address questions and provide
comprehensive explanations with evidence regarding the issues raised in the Auditor General’s report. During this
hearing, the company presented substantial evidence to demonstrate our commitment to fulfilling our contractual obligations to the MMDAs.

“Following the PAC hearing, there has been no adverse report or further queries from the PAC suggesting any
irregularities with Zoomlion’s performance. This to us indicates that, the PAC was satisfied with the explanations
and evidence we provided during the hearing. It is therefore surprising to us hearing such damaging reportage from the Chair of the PAC,” Zoomlion stated in its statement.

Zoomlion stressed the importance of constructive dialogue among all parties involved and urged against actions and statements that could damage its reputation.

“We firmly believe that it is in the best interest of and fairness to all parties involved to engage in open and constructive dialogue rather than resorting to actions and pronouncements that may tarnish the image of the company.

“Over the years, Zoomlion has consistently delivered world-class waste management services to various MMDAs, resulting in a significant reduction in sanitation-related health issues across the country. We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of service delivery and compliance with all contractual obligations. We are open to continued collaboration and dialogue with the relevant authorities to address any concerns and ensure the continued provision of exceptional waste management services.”

The directive was issued by the PAC Chairman after the Fanteakwa South Municipal Assembly failed to provide the required documents to renew its contract with Zoomlion.

Furthermore, the committee proposed a comprehensive review of the existing agreement with Zoomlion, considering that many Assemblies lack transparency regarding the terms of their contract with the company.

“We firmly believe that it is in the best interest of and fairness to all parties involved to engage in open and constructive dialogue rather than resorting to actions and pronouncements that may tarnish the image of the
    company.

“Over the years, Zoomlion has consistently delivered world-class waste management services to various
MMDAs, resulting in a significant reduction in sanitation-related health issues across the country. We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of service delivery and compliance with all contractual obligations. Minority condemns #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest crackdown as unacceptable, shameful

The Minority caucus in Parliament has strongly condemned the harsh treatment inflicted upon the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters by the police on Thursday, September 21.

In an official statement released on Friday, September 22, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, characterized the police actions as “cruel and savage.”

He further criticized the police for resorting to a “16th-century style crackdown and terror” against the demonstrators, asserting that such tactics tarnish the reputation of the Ghana Police Service.

The Minority also rebuked the Ghana Police Service for attempting to justify the arrests, emphasizing that the Service should not overstep its authority by encroaching upon the jurisdiction of the courts.

“The Minority is appalled that the Ghana Police Service is increasingly seen to be lending itself to a regime of terror and tyranny that is being meted out to critics of this intolerant Akufo-Addo/Bawumia New Patriotic Party government.

“How can the Ghana Police justify its actions today by stating that they were as a result of “the flagrant disregard of the court process served on the organisers” of the demonstration? Since when has the Ghana Police Service been clothed with the authority to punish people who disregard a lawful court order, assuming there was any such order? The courts are clothed with powers to deal with those who disobey its lawful orders. The Ghana Police Service therefore cannot usurp the role of the courts,” the Minority pointed out in its statement.

“We hold the view that the right to freely protest and civil liberties are under a great threat from the Ghana Police Service which has decided to usurp the authority of the courts and act as law unto itself. The Minority further takes great exception to the new-found penchant of the Police to designate public places such as the premises of the Jubilee House and other state institutions as so-called “security zone”, when these very institutions hosted similar protests in times past. This is an obvious attempt by the Police to shield public officials from accountability and the same shall be fiercely resisted.

“The Minority hereby demands the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters who have been arrested. As efforts are underway to free all those who have been unlawfully detained by the Police, we wish to assure the leaders of the protest, all protesters and their families that the Minority firmly stands with them. Our national anthem enjoins us to resist oppressors rule and that we will do!”

    PRESS RELEASE
MINORITY IN PARLIAMENT CONDEMNS POLICE BRUTALITIES AND ARREST OF PEACEFUL
    PROTESTORS, DEMANDS THEIR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
The Minority in Parliament is outraged at and disappointed in the Ghana Police Service for unleashing a terror squad of police officers who on Thursday shamefully brutalised and arrested peaceful protesters in Accra.

It is shocking and unacceptable that in 2023 officers of the Ghana Police Service would resort to backward and archaic policing methods to counter peaceful protesters who were only manifesting their lawful and constitutionally-guaranteed right.

We condemn in no uncertain terms the police officers’ ruthless and barbaric crackdown on the unarmed peaceful protesters. For a police service that is badly and widely criticised for its partisan policing methods in recent years, and for which a parliamentary probe is currently ongoing, the 16th century style crackdown and terror unleashed by them on the peaceful protesters in Accra yesterday further dims the reputation of the Ghana Police
    Service.

Even more shocking is the fact that the heinous and high-handedness of the police is inconsistent with its motto of Service with Integrity.

Reports say as many as 49 unarmed civilians have been arrested and detained in various police cells in Accra while several others were brutalised and manhandled by officers of the Ghana Police Service. Even journalists who were carrying out their lawful duties were reportedly beaten and arrested by the police. This is unacceptable and undemocratic.

Never has there been a time in our recent democratic experience that a government would be this intolerant of divergent views and the right to publicly protest, and the sad events of Thursday represent a new low on this slippery path. It cannot be accepted that when citizens decide to express their right to protest, the police frustrates and scuttles the processes leading to the peaceful protest or where the protesters remain resolute by
holding the protest, the police brutally cracks down on them.

The Minority is appalled that the Ghana Police Service is increasingly seen to be lending itself to a regime of terror and tyranny that is being meted out to critics of this intolerant Akufo-Addo/Bawumia New Patriotic Party government. How can the Ghana Police justify its actions today by stating that they were as a result of “the flagrant disregard of the court process served on the organisers” of the demonstration? Since when has the Ghana Police Service been clothed with the authority to punish people who disregard a lawful court order, assuming there was any such order? The courts are clothed with powers to deal with those who disobey its lawful orders. The Ghana Police Service therefore cannot usurp the role of the courts.

We hold the view that the right to freely protest and civil liberties are under a great threat from the Ghana Police Service which has decided to usurp the authority of the courts and act as law unto itself. The Minority further takes great exception to the new-found penchant of the Police to designate public places such as the premises of the Jubilee House and other state institutions as so-called “security zone”, when these very institutions hosted similar protests in times past. This is an obvious attempt by the Police to shield public officials from
accountability and same shall be fiercely resisted.

The Minority hereby demands the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters who have been arrested. As efforts are underway to free all those who have been unlawfully detained by the Police, we wish to assure the leaders of the protest, all protesters and their families that the Minority firmly stands with them. Our national anthem enjoins us to resist oppressors rule and that we will do!

Finally, we wish to remind the police and the Akufo-Addo/ Bawumia government that no amount of intimidation can stop the people of Ghana from holding the feet of appointees and duty bearers to the fire of accountability, and they must brace themselves for more civic action. We shall remain citizens and not spectators!

Former England Star Joe Cole labels Kudus as a ‘weapon’

Former West Ham star Joe Cole has commended Mohammed Kudus for his remarkable performance in West Ham’s 3-1 Europa League triumph over TSC Backa Topola.

Kudus, making his first start since his £38 million summer transfer from Ajax, played a pivotal role in West Ham’s comeback win.

His presence at the back post contributed to the equalizing goal, and he later scored with a header from a James Ward-Prowse corner at the London Stadium.

Cole expressed his confidence in Kudus becoming a valuable addition to David Moyes’ team, highlighting the squad’s potent goal-scoring ability.

“He [Kudus] looked like he was happy and settled,” Cole said on TNT Sports.

CPP to build modern hospitals in every district when voted into power

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has pledged to build state-of-the-art hospitals in every district nationwide should it emerge victorious in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during an event commemorating Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on September 21, the General Secretary of the CPP, Nana Yaa Gyantuah, asserted that the establishment of hospitals in all districts would alleviate the challenge of limited healthcare access in remote areas, ultimately enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.

Gyantuah also affirmed the CPP’s commitment to transforming the country’s prospects and urged Ghanaians to cast their votes in favor of the party during the 2024 elections.

“We are going to make sure that Ghana changes and rises on the world map. We are going to make sure Ghana rises again. When we take power, every Ghanaian will be well-resourced, we will make sure every Ghanaian has shelter, and we will make sure that you don’t go home hungry. Kudus earns praise from West Ham coach, David Moyes following his debut goal

West Ham United coach, David Moyes, has heaped praise on Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus for his exceptional performance in the Europa League match against Backa Topola.

Kudus scored his debut goal for West Ham during the game, playing a pivotal role in their come-from-behind victory. This match marked his first full appearance for the club since transferring from Ajax.

Moyes expressed his satisfaction with Kudus’ performance and emphasized his impact on the game.

“I thought Mo started the game really well, and the team was performing excellently in the initial 20 minutes. Although he had a slight dip, he ultimately contributed one, and possibly two goals, as I’ve been informed, so I’m genuinely thrilled for him,” said Moyes during a post-match interview.

“He’s had a promising start with us, and we have a lot of admiration for him. We will gradually integrate him into the team when the right moments present themselves. I’m delighted because we needed someone to step up with goals tonight, and he was the one who delivered,” he added.

Despite initially trailing due to Petar Stanic’s goal in the second half, West Ham made a strong comeback to secure the win. Kudus forced Nemanja Petrovic into an own goal and then scored with a header from a James Ward-Prowse corner kick just four minutes later. Thomas Soucek added another goal to seal the victory.

West Ham’s upcoming fixture will see them travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in the English Premier League.

“I thought Mo started the game really well, and the team was playing well in the opening 20 minutes. He faded away, but in the end, he came up with one and maybe two goals, I’m being told, so I’m really, really pleased for him,” said Moyes in a post-match interview.

“He’s made a good start, we like him a lot, and we’ll ease him in when we get the opportunities in the right moments to do so. I’m pleased because we needed someone to come up with goals tonight, and he was the one who did it,” he added.

#OccupyJulorbiHouse: Scores of Ghanaians call on Asamoah Gyan, others to add their voices

Ghanaians are increasingly urging footballers and athletes to leverage their platforms in the fight against police brutality and economic hardships in the wake of recent events surrounding the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations, initially ignited on social media, garnered substantial attention and support, with a widespread call for an end to police brutality and the recognition of the right to peaceful protest.

These peaceful rallies, organized by the Democracy Hub, saw 49 activists coming together to demand action on the country’s economic crises and corruption issues. However, what was intended as a peaceful march took a darker turn when protesters were unlawfully arrested and subjected to harsh treatment by the police.

Critics have strongly criticized these actions, emphasizing the clear violation of the constitutional right to protest and the excessive use of force.

As demands for justice and accountability grow louder, Ghanaians are turning to their sports icons for solidarity.

Many fans believe that the involvement of Ghana’s world-class sports figures can help raise awareness about the challenges facing the country. The aspiration is that these influential athletes will use their platforms to speak out against the injustices witnessed during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests.

Ghanaians are confident that the influence and outreach of these sportsmen can help amplify the message of ending police brutality and demanding better treatment for citizens.

All individuals detained during the disrupted protest at the Jubilee House on Thursday, September 21, have been released from police custody.

The Police apprehended 49 protesters at the 37 bus terminal, where they had convened for the planned demonstration on Thursday morning.

The police cited that they had submitted an application to halt the protest, which was served to Atuguba & Associates, the legal team representing the organizers from Democracy Hub, as early as Tuesday, September 19. However, the organizers claimed they were unaware of this application and chose to proceed with their march.

Confirming the release of the majority of the arrested protesters to the media, one of the organizers, Oliver Barker Vormawor, mentioned that they are still searching for one member who remains unaccounted for.

They are unable to reach this individual as all their phones were seized by the Police.

Meanwhile, several group members and celebrities, including Efia Odo and EL, are gathering at the 37 Lorry station to continue the protest. The group remains steadfast in their commitment to continue the protest despite the arrests and alleged intimidation by the police.

Following the first day of the protest, the group addressed the media, strongly condemning the actions of the police and reiterating their determination to press on with the demonstration.

Ghana Police Service expands cybercrime unit across the country

The Ghana Police Service has undertaken a comprehensive reorganization of its Cybercrime Unit (CU) as part of its transformation agenda.

This reorganization includes decentralizing the unit to all 25 police regional commands across the country to enhance accessibility to its services for the public.

The strategic restructuring has transformed the CU into an expert unit specializing in supporting criminal investigations, offering services such as cyber forensic analysis, digital device forensic analysis, mobile and network forensic analysis, and digital content forensic analysis. This shift represents a departure from its previous focus on general criminal investigations, such as assembling case files and direct handling of suspects.

In the initial phase of decentralization, the Police Service has conducted specialized training for 151 personnel who have been deployed to the 25 police regions nationwide.

These personnel will work alongside regional law enforcement agencies to bolster criminal investigations within their respective regions.

The training encompassed a wide range of critical areas, including digital wallet (mobile money) fraud, Social Engineering, Insider Threats, Online Scams, bank card fraud, File System Forensics, Artifact Analysis, Network, and Memory Forensics.

This decentralization of the CU aligns with the broader goals of modernizing the Police Service and ensuring its readiness to address emerging digital-age threats effectively.

Akufo-Addo calls on world community to assist Africa in fighting terrorism, coups

President Akufo-Addo has appealed to the global community for assistance in addressing the issues of terrorism in the Sahel and the surge in coups across Africa.

Addressing the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Akufo-Addo expressed concern over the instability in the Sahel, which has placed significant political and economic stress on West African nations.

He called upon the international community to offer immediate support to help the region recover and improve the living conditions of those affected.

Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that it’s time for Europe and its allies to reciprocate the support Africans provided during the Second World War by assisting Africa in eliminating terrorism and coups.

“Instability in the Sahel and widespread terrorist activities have put West African countries under severe political pressure and economic strain. Several countries in the region have lost vast stretches of territory to the rampaging terrorists. Coup d’états have reemerged as what some mistakenly hope would be the solution to the threats that confront their nations,” he said.

“We, in the West African Region, are trying as best as we can, under the very trying conditions we face, to deal with the situation. We are convinced that the conflicts that continue to plague our continent and our Region, in particular, would be more satisfactorily resolved if the international community was to support, not undermine, the efforts of our regional and continental organisations to deal with them,” he added.

“Africans fought and died in the Second World War in defence of Europe and her Allies, who reset the world towards the path of peace and prosperity that their nations and citizens have enjoyed for decades now. It is surely time for the world to reciprocate in our time of need,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Poor health system affects our leaders too – CDD-Ghana fellow

Pharmacist, Dr. Kwame Sarpong Asiedu has advised Ghanaian leaders and government officials against deceiving themselves into thinking they are unaffected by the poor state of the country’s healthcare system.

He highlighted that leaders often make uninformed decisions regarding healthcare because they receive regular check-ups in other countries with well-designed and effective healthcare systems.

Dr. Asiedu emphasized that leaders should remember that they are still subject to Ghana’s healthcare system in times of emergency.

“I struggle when people tell me that our leaders are not subject to our health system, the truth is they are subject to our health system, but they don’t know. The truth of the matter is this, for management of their chronic ailment, they can go abroad and do it, we hear it every time, the Speaker is going here, the President is going there, and we hear it,” he said.

He cited cases where prominent leaders had to rely on the local healthcare system due to vulnerability, and some unfortunate incidents resulted in the loss of lives.

He urged government officials and leaders to address and improve the country’s healthcare system, emphasizing that emergency situations are more likely to be life-threatening than routine check-ups abroad.

“But that’s the reality, we were here when the President in an emergency like that was subject to the health system, we’ve seen a number of prominent statesmen not being able to be flown out, we’ve seen the Vice President, it is very naive if they think they are not subject to the health system,” he said.

Dr. Asiedu made these remarks during an interview with the media, where he discussed the need for leaders to acknowledge the vulnerabilities of the local healthcare system.

  • “There can be no justification” – NDC MP tells EC over Limited Voter Registration challenges

“There can be no justification” – NDC MP tells EC over Limited Voter Registration challenges

The Minority Chief Whip, Govins Kwame Agbodza, has condemned the Electoral Commission (EC) and its Chair, Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa, in response to her recent press conference.

Agbodza criticized the EC’s attempt to use Parliament as a justification for what he sees as an unfair strategy to suppress first-time voter numbers.

Agbodza vehemently challenged the validity of the EC boss’s claims that the Commission did not have a budget to decentralize the registration process to the electoral area level, stating that Parliament’s approval of the EC’s budget for 2023 did not involve any reductions.

“One of the false, weak, and wishy-washy excuses the EC Chair, Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa, sought to canvass at her press conference to justify the EC’s dogged determination to suppress first-time voters is her claim that the Commission is acting within the constraints of its work-plan and budget as approved by Parliament,”

He warned the EC and its Commissioners that they would not be allowed to use Parliament as a convenient excuse for what he considers to be their disregard for the law, and he vowed that as representatives of the people, they would demand accountability from them.

The ongoing voter registration exercise in the EC’s district offices has faced criticism from political parties and civil society organizations, who argue that the EC has not adequately justified the decision to limit the exercise to district offices.

“There can be no justification on the part of an Electoral Commission that is hell-bent on disenfranchising voters by placing strictures and fetters on the inalienable rights of Ghanaians to register to vote in public elections and referenda, instead of implementing programmes to expand that right as it is enjoined by law to do”, the Adaklu MP stated.

The former Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu, is confident that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will emerge victorious in the 2024 election, regardless of the Electoral Commission’s decision not to expand the current limited voter registration exercise.

During his tour of various EC registration centers in the Ashanti region, Mr. Bonsu noted that many potential voters are facing challenges in participating in the registration process.

“I have traveled across the country. Situations have been calm, but the distance has been a problem. The EC should address the concerns of the people who continue to plead for an expansion. Many more people would have come if it were expanded,” he remarked.

While urging the Electoral Commission to broaden the registration’s coverage, he emphasized that the NDC is fully committed to winning the 2024 election through its own efforts.

Speaking to the media, she revealed that she initially started as an actress and transitioned into music after a chance encounter at a church rehearsal where her singing talent was discovered at the age of 15.

Maya Blu disclosed that her journey into music began when she sang a song at a church rehearsal, catching the attention of the pianist. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of her musical career, eventually leading her to sign with Lynx Entertainment.

“I actually started as an actress. I used to take part in stage acts and performances in school. Until I was 15 years old in SHS one I went to escort a friend to a church rehearsal. She was singing a song. She couldn’t really sing it well and I was like ‘This is my favourite song’ and I sang it and the pianist was like ‘wow, that was cool’ Then we started something out performing at restaurants and live band performances.” She stated.

Her stage name, Maya Blu, is a combination of her native name, “Maame Yaa,” and her favorite color, blue, which she believes perfectly captures her unique personality.

During the interview, she emphasized the importance of perseverance, hard work, and seeking improvement through voice training and self-assessment.

Maya Blu also mentioned participating in various auditions, including MTN Hitmaker 2019, where she made it to the top 12.

Maya Blu expressed her admiration for Richie Mensah, the CEO of Lynx Entertainment, as an incredible mentor who has guided her throughout her career. She also mentioned fellow Lynx Entertainment artist Adina, whose exceptional vocals have inspired her.

The artist shared advice she received from colleague artist Mr. Drew, encouraging her to have fun while performing and assured her that the audience would respond positively.

“So, I told Mr. Drew how I was feeling, we were chatting on set, and he was like, just go do your thing, have fun, and the people will love you. I went there, I did my thing, I had fun, I didn’t even care about how people were feeling at that moment, but so far as I was enjoying it, the crowd was enjoying it” the singer stated.

Reflecting on her journey, Maya Blu thanked her parents for their support and herself for her determination to pursue her dreams. She finds fulfillment in making people happy through her music, despite her busy schedule often limiting her personal life.

Maya Blu aspires to perform at the Grammys and Oscars and collaborate with a diverse range of artists in the future.

She also emphasized the need for artists to prioritize self-care and protect their mental health in the demanding music industry, stating, “You can’t please everybody, so just do it for yourself, and most importantly, protect your heart because depression is real.”

GNFS sensitizes ADPU Ghana staff on fire safety

The Ghana National Fire Service is actively educating citizens throughout the nation to decrease the recurring incidents of fire outbreaks that happen year after year.

One such educational session took place on Friday, September 15, 2023, where staff members of Advertiser & Publisher Solutions Ghana Ltd. (ADPU) underwent training with the Fire Service.

During this session, DO III Genevieve Nana Derby, Officer in Charge of the Safety Department at Accra Metro Fire Station, provided insights into the various causes of fires, preventive measures, and the correct usage of fire extinguishers.

In an interview conducted during the training, DO III Genevieve Nana appealed to the public to prioritize fire safety measures, emphasizing the importance of turning off vehicle engines while refueling at filling stations as a safety precaution.

She highlighted the consistent training provided to filling station attendants to ensure customers are informed about safety procedures. Despite this, incidents of customers not turning off their engines persist, whether due to ignorance or lack of concentration.

DO III Genevieve Nana also noted the collaboration between the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in combating illegal electrical connections, a significant contributor to fire outbreaks in the country.

The recurring issue of extensive fire outbreaks, especially in central markets, remains a concern in Ghana. Despite efforts by successive governments to address these challenges, there has been little progress.

One of the most recent incidents occurred on Sunday, September 17, 2023, when a fire engulfed the CMB market, further highlighting the need for continued fire safety education and preventive measures.

Manso Tontokrom: Newborn baby abandoned in Asuofu river

Residents of Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region were shocked to discover a newborn baby abandoned in the Asuofu River.

The female child, approximately one day old, was found partially hanging on the riverbank.

The incident came to light when a local woman, who lives near the river, heard the cries of a baby.

She initially thought it was some dangerous animal and ran back to her room after hearing strange sounds while going to urinate around 4:00 AM.

However, she continued to hear the noise until 3:00 PM, when she raised an alarm.

A group of residents armed with guns and machetes went to investigate, suspecting dangerous animals like pythons, crocodiles, or snakes.

She said she woke up around 4:00 am dawn to urinate, and upon going near the river, she heard the strange sound. Suspecting it to dangerous animal hunting other smaller animals, she ran quickly back to her room.

“We went to the scene with some people wielding guns and machetes to hunt that particular animal. To our dismay, we got to know that it was a human being (newborn child) that was partially hanging on the river with its other parts touching the water, she added”.

To their surprise, they found a newborn child hanging by the river, with some weeds and bush ropes preventing her from falling into the water.

The Assembly Member for the area, Mark Amponsah, reported that the baby was subsequently admitted to St. Martin’s Hospital at Agroesum. Efforts to locate the child’s mother have been unsuccessful, despite house-to-house visits and announcements at the information center.

The case has been reported to the police and social welfare, and the baby is reported to be in good health at the hospital.

Management of Nkrumah Museum in Nkorful receives GHS10k donation for renovation

As the celebration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday approaches on September 21, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has called upon Ghanaians to honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah not just on his birthday, but continuously.

Armah-Kofi Buah also expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of Dr. Nkrumah’s Museum at Nkroful, his birthplace and initial burial site.

To contribute to the restoration efforts, he donated GH¢10,000 to the Planning Committee for Nkrumah’s Birthday celebrations.

Recognizing the urgent need for renovation, he emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and stressed that efforts should not be confined to anniversary celebrations alone.

Mr Buah acknowledged the significance of Dr. Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana and Africa, and emphasized the importance of preserving and celebrating his legacy.

Buah invited the public to join him in celebrating Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday and expressed his commitment to transform Nkroful into a central hub for commemorating Dr. Nkrumah’s life and achievements.

He also addressed attempts to diminish Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy, emphasizing that it remains strong and enduring in the hearts of many Ghanaians and Africans.

Nana Sanzah Erzah, a member of the Dr. Nkrumah Memorial Day celebration and Ebusuapanyin of Nkroful, commended Buah for his leadership role in upholding Dr. Nkrumah’s place in Ghana’s history.

He pledged to utilize the donation to renovate the museum, replace damaged furniture, and beautify the surroundings before September 21.

The Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Museum at Nkroful holds great historical significance, as it recounts the story of Dr. Nkrumah’s birth and his initial burial place upon his return to Ghana after his passing. Despite its importance, the museum has suffered neglect and deterioration over the years, warranting efforts to restore and preserve it as part of the national celebration of Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy.

Minority expresses concerns over govt’s proposal to pledge TEN Oil Field for $431M loan

The Minority in Parliament has issued an urgent plea to halt the government’s intention to use proceeds from the TEN oil field as collateral for a $431 million loan facility from LITASCO.

They argue that this arrangement is unlawful and express concerns that the TEN oil field would be obligated to produce a minimum of 3.8 million barrels of crude oil annually for LITASCO as part of the loan agreement.

During a press conference held on Wednesday, September 20, John Jinapor, the Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee, highlighted that despite Parliament’s rejection of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation’s (GNPC) request to secure the loan until the terms and conditions of the agreement were disclosed, the presidency has instructed GNPC to seek board approval for the loan without the required parliamentary consent.

“To our utmost shock, the minority side has become aware that the presidency is using coercive force to compel the GNPC to proceed and execute this loan agreement without parliamentary approval,” Jinapor said, adding “This is unconstitutional, this is unlawful and this is a blatant disregard to the directive and resolution of Parliament.”

The Minority also praised the GNPC board members who have voiced their opposition to the loan agreement. Jinapor emphasized that the courageous stance taken by the GNPC board should be encouraged.

He cautioned that moving forward with the loan agreement without parliamentary approval would constitute a breach of the constitution.

Omane Boamah deserves appointment as Director of Elections – Sam George

The Member of Parliament representing Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has urged the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Council of Elders to reject a petition opposing the appointment of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah as the Director of Elections and ICT.

In a statement dated September 18, Sam George asserted that Dr. Edward Omane Boamah is the most qualified individual within the party to assume responsibility for election-related matters in preparation for the 2024 general elections.

“Dr. Omane Boamah is a valuable asset to our esteemed party,” remarked George, further noting, “He has held various key positions, including the Minister of Communications and Minister of Youth and Sports. His exceptional intellect and extensive experience have consistently yielded successful outcomes.”

Sam George’s remarks were prompted by concerns raised by a concerned NDC supporter and social activist, Delanyo Agbe, regarding Dr. Omane Boamah’s appointment.

In a petition addressed to the party’s leadership, Agbe argued that Dr. Omane Boamah lacks the requisite expertise to effectively carry out his responsibilities.

However, Sam George dismissed Agbe’s apprehensions, alleging that Agbe’s intentions were to sow discord within the party.

“We are grateful to God for bringing us this far as a church so we decided not to celebrate this milestone alone, but to share with those who truly need help in society.

This reflects the church’s commitment to sharing love and promoting the message of faith and compassion.

Apostle Ampomah-Boateng called upon corporate entities and religious organizations, particularly churches, to extend a helping hand to those individuals and institutions facing dire circumstances.

He stressed the importance of supporting hospitals, orphanages, schools, and other organizations providing essential social services for the betterment of society.

Apostle Ampomah-Boateng urged everyone to become humanitarian ambassadors and assist those who require support, emphasizing that true gospel preaching should be accompanied by actions that address hunger and the basic needs of people.

The Founder of the Forever True Friends Foundation, Jane Gerbs, expressed gratitude to GPCC for their timely assistance to the shelter home.

  • Decline contract renewals with Zoomlion – PAC chairman to MMDAs

Decline contract renewals with Zoomlion – PAC chairman to MMDAs

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), James Klutse Avedzi, has issued a stern warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) against the renewal of contracts with the waste management company Zoomlion, citing a lack of apparent benefits.

During a public accounts committee hearing held in Ho, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North emphasized that Parliament had officially endorsed the non-renewal of contracts with the waste management firm.

The caution was prompted by the Fanteakwa South Municipal Assembly’s failure to furnish the necessary documentation required for the renewal of its contract with Zoomlion.

Additionally, the committee has suggested a thorough review of the existing agreements with Zoomlion, given that many Assemblies lack transparency in their dealings with the company.

“I am told that there is a clause in the contract that gives automatic renewal. Unless you the assembly will communicate to the company the intention not to renew.

“So go back and read your contract document and then make reference to that clause, and inform Zoomlion that when your contract expires, you will not renew it again. Because you are not deriving any benefits from that, you are just wasting that money.”

Avedzi highlighted a particular clause in the contracts that allows for automatic renewal unless the assembly communicates its intention not to renew.

He advised the assemblies to carefully examine their contract documents, refer to this clause, and inform Zoomlion that they do not intend to renew the contracts upon expiration due to the perceived lack of benefits.

Avedzi’s warning comes in response to growing concerns regarding the cost-effectiveness and transparency of Zoomlion’s contracts with various MMDAs.

Critics have previously argued that the company charges excessive fees for its services, and some contracts have allegedly been awarded without proper due process.

  • Place emphasis on basic necessities when drafting national budget – Petrosol to govt

Place emphasis on basic necessities when drafting national budget – Petrosol to govt

The government has been urged to effectively address the fundamental needs of its citizens, such as food, housing, and employment, in response to the ongoing economic crisis.

Michael Bozumbil, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the oil marketing company Petrosol, made this plea recently.

He emphasized that by establishing robust social safety nets, the government could alleviate the burden on individuals and businesses, sparing them from having to allocate significant resources to assist those affected by economic crises.

Bozumbil challenged the government to develop a parallel microeconomic framework dedicated to assessing the human development index of its citizens.

To ensure the effectiveness of such a framework, he called on political appointees and policymakers to step out of their comfort zones and engage directly with individuals in the micro sector, including small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, to gain firsthand insights into their challenges and propose practical solutions.

He argued that if the government is implementing initiatives like the Ghana CARES strategy, it should have a microeconomic policy that specifically targets the impoverished and vulnerable populations, with a budget allocated for microeconomic issues before addressing macroeconomic concerns.

Speaking as one of the main speakers at the third quarter Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting in Accra, Bozumbil stressed that the microeconomy directly affects people, including their incomes, poverty levels, and living standards. He urged the government to prioritize revitalizing the economy at this level.

Bozumbil also suggested that understanding the spending habits and living standards of people in various sectors, such as Abossey Okai Spare Parts and Makola, could assist the government in advising them on managing non-essential expenses and prioritizing actions to navigate the current economic challenges successfully.

The meeting, themed “Thriving During Economic Turbulence,” explored different perspectives for local businesses and citizens to overcome the prevailing economic difficulties in their respective pursuits.

Additionally, Bozumbil called on the government to review the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, suggesting that it should be more targeted to reduce unnecessary expenditure and focus on those who genuinely require it. He acknowledged the policy’s merits but emphasized the need for sustainability in its implementation.

Bozumbil underscored the importance of the private sector as the engine of growth for the country and urged the government to support it in bearing some of the current economic burdens. He also emphasized the private sector’s responsibility to collaborate with the government and fulfill their tax obligations to support the government’s tasks and commitments to its citizens.

In turbulent economic times, Professor John Gatsi, a Business Advisory Expert, advised individuals to review their personal budgets and lifestyles, including reducing non-essential expenses such as daily commuting by personal vehicles.

Furthermore, economist Agyapomaa Gyeke-Dako stressed the importance of adequately resourcing the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) to implement long-term strategies, ensuring that political changes do not lead to the abandonment of crucial projects and fostering sustainable development collectively.

USAID wraps up its nutrition initiative in Upper West

The USAID Advancing Nutrition initiative has played a pivotal role in combating the pervasive issue of malnutrition, particularly prevalent in the northern regions of the country.

This project has diligently worked alongside diverse stakeholders, including civil society organizations, academic institutions, and Municipal/District Assemblies (MDAs).

Over the course of a concluded three-year project, USAID Advancing Nutrition facilitated collaboration between formal and informal sectors to celebrate significant strides in enhancing multi-sectoral nutrition planning, coordination, and services in the Upper West Region.

Post-project evaluation revealed notable progress in the battle against malnutrition, albeit challenges persist due to deeply ingrained taboos, cultural beliefs, and practices affecting women and children under the age of five.

The project encompassed all 11 MDAs within the region and underscored that child malnutrition, particularly among those under five, has transcended mere health concerns and has transformed into a broader developmental issue.

During the project’s closing ceremony, Maureen Malaye, the Nutrition and Social Protection Team Lead, emphasized that the initiative represented the United States’ support for Ghana’s quest to tackle malnutrition effectively.

The event centered on the theme: “Deepening the Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Agenda: The USAID Advancing Nutrition Story.”

In terms of achievements, Ms. Malaye highlighted various successes achieved under the project, such as ensuring nutrition security for 250,000 children under five, benefiting over 120,000 pregnant women, and training 5,700 healthcare professionals nationwide to enhance household nutrition.

In a speech delivered on his behalf, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, expressed gratitude for the intervention’s significant impact in the area. He noted that the project had catalyzed the formation of multi-sectoral nutrition planning and coordination groups. As a result, malnutrition was incorporated into district medium development plans, allocating funds to address this critical issue. Dr. Bin Salih emphasized the importance of sustaining the project’s accomplishments.

Dr. Damien Punguyire, the Regional Director of Health Services (GHS), acknowledged that the project had improved the capacity of healthcare workers and provided them with valuable resources. Consequently, there had been notable improvements in malnutrition counseling and a reduction in anemia among pregnant women.

Naa Pwowele Karbo III, the Paramount Chief of Lawra Traditional Area, encouraged project beneficiaries to apply the knowledge they gained to eliminate malnutrition from society.

He also invited other participants to explore the region’s numerous tourist attractions, taking advantage of the local hospitality.

  • Lands Commission partners PBD Ltd for $85M land administration project

Lands Commission partners PBD Ltd for $85M land administration project

The Lands Commission is set to initiate an $85-million project in partnership with a local private company, PBD Ltd, starting next year.

This five-year project aims to revolutionize land administration in the country.

PBD Ltd, the local investor, will provide both the capital and technical expertise required for the project.

The comprehensive initiative will involve the development of digital maps of the country, the enhancement of the Lands Commission’s human resource capacity through training and retraining, the provision of new tools for the commission, and the consolidation of land records digitization.

The acting Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, Benjamin Arthur, disclosed these plans, emphasizing that the objective is for the investor to contribute the necessary resources for the project’s implementation.

The Lands Commission will then repay the investment over an extended period using internally generated funds.

“We have reached an advanced stage with the processes for the investor to come on board,” Arthur stated.

This announcement follows a directive from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources regarding the need to address the root causes of corruption at the Lands Commission. A 2021 study by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) ranked the Lands Commission as the most corrupt institution in Ghana.

The study revealed that officials at the commission received the largest cash bribes among public officials, with an average bribe size of GH₵1,669.

In response to the minister’s directive, the client service unit of the Lands Commission has replaced all front desk officers with technical staff. This partnership with a private investor is envisioned as a comprehensive approach to create a robust system that combats corruption, and it includes the vital step of digitally mapping the country.

Mr. Arthur stressed the importance of digital mapping, as it would eliminate the need for various agencies to develop their maps independently. Instead, it would establish a national spatial data infrastructure that allows all agencies to access standardized data for their respective needs.

Deputy Minister Benito Owusu-Bio emphasized the need for the Lands Commission to expedite reforms in areas such as human resources, structure, and processes to improve its image and eliminate corruption.

He hailed the public-private partnership as a positive and revolutionary step that would empower the commission to fulfill its mandate while ensuring the removal of illegal actors from service provision.

€10M food security project launched to enhance agriculture in Northern Ghana

A food security project to enhance food availability and access for the northern region has been initiated in Accra .

The project also aims to increase maize yields to 18,000 metric tonnes, millet to 5,184 metric tonnes, and sorghum to 8,517 metric tonnes.

It will involve capacity-building for beneficiary farmers, including women and other value chain actors, to assist them in their agricultural activities.

Additionally, the project will focus on improving farmers’ capacity in climate change adaptation, market access, financial services, and pest and disease management for both animals and crops.

Funded by the EU, the project was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The three entities signed an agreement to mark the commencement of the project.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, emphasized the strong partnership between the government, the EU, and the FAO.

“The COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change and other factors have compounded the situation of many households who struggle to access adequate and nutritious food.

“For example, we used to import fertiliser from Ukraine and Russia at $500 a metric ton, but it has moved up to over a $1,000 since the crisis began,” he said.

He highlighted challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and climate change, which have affected food security.

The FAO Representative to Ghana, Yurdi Yasmi, noted that the project aligns with the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative and the EU’s “Farm to Fork Strategy,” which aims to ensure food supply and security. He emphasized the need for agrifood systems to become more resilient and provide affordable and sustainable food.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, highlighted the rapid mobilization of funding for the project as a symbol of the EU’s commitment and solidarity in addressing rising food costs and supporting vulnerable areas to alleviate poverty and malnutrition.

  • Doli bridge to be fixed within a week – Amoako-Attah

Doli bridge to be fixed within a week – Amoako-Attah

The government has provided assurance that it will complete repairs on the damaged Doli bridge for temporary use within the next week.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Attah, conveyed this assurance during his inspection of the bridge on September 19, 2023.

The bridge, which serves as a vital link between the Upper West Region and the southern part of Ghana, was washed away after heavy rainfall on September 17, 2023.

Amoako-Attah stated that the contractor, who is already on site, has been instructed to work around the clock to ensure the temporary solution is completed within a week.

“I have instructed the contractor to work day and night and you know that work has started. There are as many as 20 trucks coming so work has started in earnest,” he said.

“So within a week this road will be established temporarily for vehicles to pass and then the next few weeks, permanent works will be done and the roads will be reinstated in its position with a strong bridge,” he stated.

Amoako-Attah also appealed to drivers who have reportedly increased fares by 40% due to detours on the Sawla-Fufulso and Buipe-Techiman highways to consider reducing fares.

“I want to appeal to our drivers and transport unions. I am also told that transport fares have gone up by 40% because of the long routes that they have to use but I want to make an appeal to them on behalf of the government that this is a disastrous situation and nobody has control over it,” he said.

“It had been occasioned by an act of God but we must deal with it. The people are already suffering, going through difficulty, going through inconvenience so they should be a bit considerate. We must be each other’s keeper,” he said.

  • Ghana’s Russian Embassy distances itself from suspected Pro-Wagner Mercenaries

Ghana’s Russian Embassy distances itself from suspected Pro-Wagner Mercenaries

The Russian Embassy in Ghana has denied any association with the leadership of the alleged pro-Russia Wagner mercenary group, whose members were apprehended by the police in Takoradi, Western Region.

The Western Regional Police Command recently initiated legal proceedings against three individuals arrested in Diabene, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, suspected of having links to Russia’s Wagner mercenary group. These arrests followed a public gathering organized by the youth, during which they were seen displaying flags of Wagner and Russia.

The arrested suspects are identified as Evans (25), Michael Asiedu (23), and Ernest Asiedu (26). With support allegedly from a sponsor in Australia, the trio mobilized around 20 youths to establish a military group at the Diabene community park. However, a tip-off led to their apprehension by the police.

In a statement posted on its official page on X (formerly Twitter), the Russian Embassy refuted any involvement in the distribution of Russian flags, shirts, and placards among the protestors. It also clarified that it has had no contact with potential sponsors of the group.

The embassy’s statement read, “It must be emphasized that the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Ghana, as well as other government agencies, have no connections to the abovementioned unauthorized gathering. Moreover, upon receipt in August of information about a public action being plotted, the Embassy immediately appealed to Ghana Police and warned about the possible organization of the rally with the use of the national symbols of the Russian Federation.”

The Russian Embassy expressed confidence that the security agencies would take the necessary steps to identify the perpetrators, emphasizing that the legal process would eventually be followed.

“The Embassy is confident that the Ghanaian law enforcement bodies will take the necessary measures to identify all those involved in this incident, and the court will take appropriate decisions to bring them to justice,” the embassy said.
