The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) elections, originally scheduled for August 8, 2023, has been postponed due to an interlocutory injunction ordered by the Accra High Court.
Two MUSIGA members, Doe Kwablah Seyenam Nyamadi and Frederick Van Dyk, initiated the legal proceeding.
In their petition, they contend that the current leadership of MUSIGA has violated the union’s constitution by failing to furnish comprehensive financial records.
The plaintiffs argue that this lack of financial transparency disqualifies MUSIGA from conducting elections and transferring power to a new executive.
The court concurred with the plaintiffs, leading to the issuance of the interlocutory injunction, effectively halting the elections until a full hearing and resolution of the matter.
This setback poses a significant challenge for MUSIGA, which has encountered obstacles in conducting its elections in recent years, with the last one held in 2014.
The uncertainty arising from the election postponement raises concerns about MUSIGA’s future, leaving uncertainties regarding the timing and feasibility of upcoming elections.
Chairman of the MUSIGA Election Committee, Peter Marfo, expressed regret for any inconveniences caused by the injunction, impacting valued members, potential candidates, and the overall operations of the union.
The Builsa South Member of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has expressed concerns about the West African Examination Council (WAEC) facing challenges in marking and grading the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) if the government doesn’t settle its outstanding GH¢55 million debt to the examination body.
Dr. Apaak was surprised to learn that out of the total GH¢70 million owed to WAEC, the government had only paid GH¢10.5 million.
He stressed that this delay in debt payment could disrupt WAEC’s essential functions.
During an interview with the media on August 7, 2023, Dr. Clement Apaak urgently called on the government to promptly clear the debt owed WAEC.
“ It comes to us as a shock and surprise that WAEC is now telling us that contrary to what the government had indicated, only a paltry GH¢10.5 million out of about GH¢70 million has been provided.
“So we will like to call on the government to immediately make the resources available to WAEC because if that does not happen after the papers have been written, they wouldn’t be marked and they wouldn’t be graded. This is a very dire situation that calls for urgent attention,” he said according to 3news.com.
He emphasized that the papers written may not be marked or graded if the resources are not provided in a timely manner, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
According to John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the government has paid GH¢10.5 million out of the total debt, but there are still outstanding arrears for the years 2021 and 2022. While the printing for the ongoing BECE has been covered, further processes such as marking and finalizing results will require additional funds.
The situation underscores the importance of resolving the financial matters promptly to ensure the smooth operation of the examination process and to avoid potential disruptions.
“So far for BECE 2021 and 2022, yes we have received the arrears but for this year 2023, we received about GH¢10.5 million which is 15 percent of the total payment due. So obviously there are still some arrears that should be settled. They promise of course that they are going to send some money to us so we are waiting.
“So far what we’ve been able to do is the printing for what we are conducting. But for the marking and final processing of the result, we will have to get some more money otherwise sections of the process will suffer,” 3news.com quoted him as having said.

According to him, the arrests were made in the Ashanti Region, Central Region and Tema Central in the Greater Accra Region.
Communities in the Zabzugu constituency of the Northern Region have received mechanised boreholes from Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Alhaji Fawaz Aliu.
The donation was given in response to chiefs and elders’ requests for assistance in addressing the shortage of drinkable water in various areas in the constituency.
The community, represented by the chiefs and other opinion leaders, expressed their gratitude to Alhaji Aliu for the generous gesture and promised to put the boreholes to good use.
Speaking to the media, the residents recalled previous activities he had undertaken to help the people in the constituency.
According to sources, Alhaji Aliu, who was named Deputy Chief of Staff by President Nana Akufo-Addo in January 2021, will run for the Zabzugu parliamentary seat on the NPP ticket.
According to reports, Alhaji Aliu has huge support from the chiefs, women, and youth in the area as a result of his multiple interventions in the constituency’s development.
He has endeared himself to several other key political blocs in the Northern Region throughout the years after attaining the presidency.
It is unclear whether the senior three-time incumbent MP will still run for the seat against the younger, more dynamic, and development-minded Fawaz Aliu.
Beginning August 15, 2023, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will enforce a 10% withholding tax on total gaming winnings.
The Authority explained that the fee will be levied on earnings gained after each win and that the previous 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate on each bet will not be charged.
The new directive, it explained is associated with an amendment to the Income Tax Act 2023 (No.2), Act 1094.
Addressing the media, Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at GRA, Edward Gyamerah, stated that non-compliant gaming firms could lose licenses due to the policy, hence urged them to adhere to the directive.
“Come August 15, we expect that when you are making the payments, you will withhold 10 percent to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). As you have been appointed as withholding agents, the obligation is on you to withhold. If you fail to do that, with the interactions we had with you and with the support of the gaming commission, you can be assured that your licenses will be withdrawn,” the Commissioner for the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at GRA, Edward cautioned.
As part of amendments to the Income Tax Act, the GRA revealed the implementation of new excise duties on beverages.
Head of the Compliance Excise Unit at GRA, Nelson Bright Atsu, indicated that fruit juices, grapes, and unfermented vegetable juices without added spirits or sugar will now carry a 20% excise duty.
Additionally, the excise duty on other beverages will rise from 17.5% to 20%.
Mr. Atsu further elaborated that beverage companies prioritizing local raw materials could qualify for excise duty payment rebates.
These adjustments in the form of new withholding tax on gaming winnings and revised excise duties on beverages are integral to GRA’s strategies for enhancing revenue mobilization in Ghana.
Employees of the Health Services Workers Union at Kumasi South Hospital have expressed strong opposition to the appointment of Dr. Oheneba Owusu Danso, a former Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), to their institution.
A communication from the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, revealed the decision to assign Dr. Oheneba Owusu Danso to a two-year contract as a Consultant specializing in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Hand Surgery at Kumasi South Hospital.
Although the official notice has not yet reached the hospital’s management, certain staff members have raised concerns regarding the appointment of the former KATH CEO.
Joshua Lawrence Nii Adu Arday, the Vice Chairman of the Health Services Workers Union at Kumasi South Hospital, stated their intention to resist the appointment, citing reservations about Dr. Oheneba Owusu Danso’s suitability for the role.
“We’ve heard reports, even on social media, about Dr. Oheneba Owusu Danso’s potential transfer to Kumasi South Hospital. If these reports are accurate, then we are not in favor of his appointment. He is a plastic surgeon, and we question his relevance here. We have capable individuals who can manage the affairs of this hospital. Furthermore, he is 65 years old. What exactly is his purpose in coming here?”
Mr Arday clarified that their opposition is not against the government’s aim of increasing staff numbers at the hospital.
A strong security presence has been established at the premises of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to prevent a potential incursion by tricycle operators who are opposing a directive aimed at restricting their movement within certain parts of the metropolis.
On a recent Monday, irate tricycle operators gathered at the KMA premises demanding the release of their impounded tricycles.
The situation escalated and armed police officers were summoned to maintain order, resulting in a confrontational clash.
In order to prevent a recurrence of such events, both police and military personnel have been stationed at the KMA premises.
The Public Relations Officer of the KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu, asserted that the Assembly will not retract its decision to enforce the directive.
She explained that among the individuals apprehended on August 7, roughly five or six were not actual tricycle operators but were enticed to participate in causing disruptions. These individuals claimed they were responding to a call to cause disturbances at the KMA premises.
“At present, they are in police custody. We have informed the police that we wish for the case to go to court, allowing the legal system to determine the outcome of the situation. We currently hold 43 tricycles in our custody, as there were initially 46, but three were forcefully removed,” she clarified.
The KMA’s directive has sparked a contentious debate about the role of tricycles in the city.
Some individuals perceive tricycles as a source of inconvenience and contributors to traffic congestion, while others argue that tricycles are a crucial mode of transportation, particularly for the economically disadvantaged.
The KMA has reiterated its commitment to upholding and enforcing the directive.
Education officials in Sekyere Afram Plains, Ashanti Region are depending on drones to distribute examination papers to students taking this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This is as a result of the challenges facing the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in delivering materials to students in the Sekyere Afram Plains area after the Sene River overflowed its banks, education authorities have turned to drones as a solution.
The Director of Education for the Sekyere Afram Plains District, Prince Owusu Ansah, has revealed that drones will be utilized throughout the duration of the examination.
“We will be conducting the exams throughout the week, with the drones facilitating the delivery of questions to the candidates. These questions will be securely housed at the Anyinam police station. Once the exams conclude on Friday, we are hopeful that the road conditions will have improved, the water levels would have receded, allowing us to transport all the answer scripts by road to the depot at Mampong,” stated Mr. Ansah.
Across the nation, a total of over 600,000 students are participating in the week-long Basic Education Certificate Examination. Among them, there are 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 schools nationwide.
This year’s cohort of candidates marks the final group to undertake the Basic Education Certificate Examination, which has been a part of the educational landscape for over three decades.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service (GPS), National Investigations Bureau (NIB), along with external invigilators, have been dispatched to address any instances of examination misconduct that might arise at various examination centers during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
A total of 2,488 candidates from 76 different primary schools are currently participating in the BECE at four examination centers located in Koforidua.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mustapha Haruna Appiah, emphasized that comprehensive measures have been established to prevent any form of examination misconduct at all the Koforidua centers.
He stated, “Stringent entry protocols have been put in place. If a search reveals no unauthorized materials, candidates will be allowed into the examination hall. We have also engaged with the students, conducting sessions last week to enlighten them about the consequences of engaging in examination malpractice. We believe they have attentively heeded this advice and will exhibit appropriate behavior.”
“During our visits, we observed a high level of confidence among the candidates. This indicates that the risk of examination misconduct is low, given our proactive measures. Additionally, the presence of the BNI and other security personnel serves as a deterrent. Students are well aware that any misbehavior will result in legal consequences,” he asserted.
Isaac Appau Gyasi, the Municipal Chief Executive, expressed commendation for both the involved stakeholders and the candidates themselves, highlighting their exemplary attitude and behavior. He pledged the assembly’s commitment to support academically talented but financially challenged students in their pursuit of further education, contingent on their successful performance.
“Today’s observations underscore the effectiveness of the teachers’ preparations, and the students’ dedication is evident. This fills me with satisfaction, and I am confident that the outcomes will be favorable for all parties involved.”
“We want to assure the students that the assembly remains dedicated to their success. Our support will continue, as it has in the past. Our primary desire is for them to excel and excel admirably,” he affirmed.

As of August 2, 2023, the Fund has disbursed a total of GH¢25,278,029.39 in scholarship fees to the respective institutions where the awardees are studying.
Recalling that in December 2022, GETFund opened applications for local scholarships through an online portal.
The response was overwhelming, with a total of 22,000 applications submitted. In light of this strong interest, the Fund’s Board of Trustees decided to increase the number of available scholarships to the current figure of 4,279 recipients.
However, it is worth noting that, as of August 2, 2023, approximately 300 successful applicants have yet to accept the scholarship offers sent to them via email. Despite efforts to reach out to them, the Fund has been unable to proceed with their documentation for further processing, as announced in a statement by GETFund.
“It must be placed on record that as of August 2, 2023, about three hundred (300) successful applicants have still not accepted the scholarship offers sent to them via their email addresses, although efforts have been made to contact them. Hence, the Fund is unable to process their documentation for further action,” GETFund announced in a statement.
The Africa Bar Association has bestowed President Akufo-Addo with the Medal of Merit in Leadership Award.
The President of the Association, Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, explained that the award recognizes President Akufo-Addo’s pan-Africanist ideals, commitment to combating corruption, outstanding governance, and enduring statesmanship.

The Ghana AIDS Commission has initiated an assertive campaign to combat the rise of new HIV infections in the country.
The Commission is particularly focused on individuals who engage in sexual activity with partners or multiple partners for financial gain, urging them to be aware of their own HIV status as well as that of their clients before engaging in sexual encounters.
Ghana has set ambitious goals, aiming to reduce new HIV infections in the general population by 85% by the year 2025 and ultimately eliminate the virus entirely by 2030.
Dr. Steve Kyeremeh Atuahene, the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, has provided guidance on steps that individuals can take to help curb the spread of HIV.
“If you want to reduce the risk you first reduce the number of sex partners and if that is too difficult for you then you have to protect yourself at all times because you do not know what your client is capable of giving you.”
“You also have to test to know your HIV status because for you to effectively protect yourself against HIV you should know whether you have it or not, and do well to know the HIV status of your partner.”
“Now, we have self-test kits which are free, so you can have as many as you want and encourage your partners to test if you’re a sex worker,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of reducing the number of sexual partners to lower the risk of transmission. If that proves challenging, individuals are advised to consistently protect themselves, as they may not know the potential risks posed by their partners.
Furthermore, Dr. Atuahene stressed the significance of getting tested for HIV to be informed about one’s own status and that of their partner. He highlighted the availability of free self-test kits, encouraging individuals, particularly sex workers, to utilize them and encourage their partners to do the same.
Dr. Atuahene also cautioned against the dangers of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) apart from HIV, underscoring the importance of staying safe and practicing protection.
Recently, the Ghana AIDS Commission disclosed a concerning statistic: over 100,000 individuals in Ghana are carriers of HIV, and many of them are unaware of their status, contributing to the further spread of the virus.
Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene emphasized the Commission’s proactive approach, launching an intensive search for these carriers to provide them with necessary treatment.
The campaign to promote HIV self-testing is a direct response to this challenge. Dr. Atuahene highlighted the Commission’s commitment to reaching underserved populations and making testing services more accessible.
He explained, “There are individuals who lack access to HIV services, and some may find it difficult to access these services. By bringing the services to their doorstep, we can empower those who may be hesitant to know their status to begin the process of testing and determine whether they are reactive or not.”
A clash between tricycle riders and law enforcement personnel at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) premises has left six police officers injured.
The confrontation erupted as the tricycle riders hurled stones, shattering the windshields of two vehicles belonging to KMA staff.
The situation escalated to the point where a military unit had to step in to quell the riot.
The tricycle riders, who felt aggrieved, besieged the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly in an effort to reclaim their impounded tricycles.
However, their attempt was met with strong resistance from the police, which further exacerbated tensions.
This led to a confrontation between the riders and law enforcement.
During the clash, six officers sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the KMA clinic.
Subsequently, the Assembly called upon military intervention to disperse the gathering and took into custody 12 tricycle riders.
The Communications Director for KMA, Afia Konadu, revealed that the commercial tricycle riders had initially obstructed the Suame route leading to the central business district.
She explained, “Police from Suame were also called in to mediate. After they relocated from that area to the KMA premises in an attempt to retrieve their seized tricycles, a disagreement with the police ensued, resulting in injuries.”
In the midst of this situation, the Assembly remains unwavering in its resolve to curb the operation of commercial tricycles within the city. Afia Konadu emphasized, “As an Assembly, we are committed to maintaining the city’s decongestion efforts by enforcing restrictions on these tricycle riders.”

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Wulensi Constituency in the Northern Region, Thomas Donkor Ogajah, has been apprehended by the police for reportedly defrauding a scrap dealer.
Mr Ogajah faces charges of defrauding by false pretence under section 131 of the Criminal Offence Act of 1960 (Act 29) for an amount of 38,600 belonging to the scrap dealer.
Additionally, he is charged with fraudulent breach of trust under section 128 of the same act, involving GH¢57,000 belonging to the scrap dealer, Yussif Osman.
Investigation revealed that in September 2021, Ogajah met the complainant, Yussif Osman, and offered assistance in purchasing scraps from the Ministry of Railways.
Osman, who was introduced to Ogajah by an associate, provided an advanced payment of GH¢5,000. Ogajah claimed to have connections with former and current Ministers of Railways Development and requested subsequent payments from Osman, totaling GH¢38,600.
The second charge pertains to a scrap deal with a Chinese company, where Osman sought Ogajah’s help to finance the purchase. Following the successful transaction, Ogajah diverted the profit instead of equally distributing it among the parties involved.
Osman reported the case to the Legon Police Station in July 2023, leading to Ogajah’s arrest on August 5, 2023. Ogajah acknowledged the allegations.
He faces formal charges of defrauding by false pretence and fraudulent breach of trust. While granted bail, he will soon appear in court for arraignment.
The police continue their investigation into the case.
The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has reported that the government has settled only 15% of the total arrears owed to them.
Earlier flagged by the Minority in Parliament, the arrears involve examiners, invigilators, and supervisors from the 2022 examination, creating concerns ahead of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The ranking member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Peter Nortsu-Kortoe, advised prompt payment by the government.
Urgency is stressed due to the potential risk of Ghana losing its Headquarters status due to the substantial debts owed to WAEC.
John Kapi, a member of WAEC’s Communication Unit, revealed that the government has provided 10 million Ghana cedis, constituting 15% of the total arrears for BECE 2021 and 2022.
However, outstanding payments remain, and further funding is crucial for the smooth execution of exams and result processing.
While printing for ongoing exams has proceeded, the marking and final result processing require additional funding. Kapi cautioned that without more payments, certain aspects of the examination process could be compromised.
Despite these financial concerns, over 600,000 students, including 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 schools nationwide, have begun this year’s BECE on August 7, 2023.

Nana Peprah Abu Bonsra, the Odikro of Nhyieso, shared the relief that the renovated road brings to pregnant women needing to access antenatal clinics in Obuasi.
He lauded AngloGold Ashanti for addressing the hardships experienced by both drivers and the general public due to the previously deteriorated road segment.
Six out of the seven surviving founding fathers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region have wholeheartedly thrown their support behind Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto as the party’s most viable contender for the coveted flagbearer position.
Described as the ‘Big Six’ due to their substantial influence in contemporary Ghanaian politics, these elder statesmen visited Dr. Akoto at his residence in Danyame on August 5, 2023.
Led by Chairman Kofi Obiri Yeboah, they engaged with Dr. Akoto, delving into his vision for the party and the nation at large.
Their collective aim is to reignite unity within the party as they approach the 2024 general elections.
The esteemed members of this group include Akwasi Gyeabour Asante, William Asafu-Agyei, George Appiah, Nicholas Kofi Nyantakyi, and Peter Kwabena Anokye. The seventh member, Owusu Badu, sought permission from the Chairman to be absent.
The ‘Big Six’ expressed unwavering confidence in Dr. Akoto’s ability to steer both the NPP and Ghana, citing his exemplary track record within the party and his tenure as the Minister of Food and Agriculture under President Akufo-Addo.
This endorsement comes as part of Dr. Akoto’s campaign for the NPP flagbearer position. Similar endorsements have already been received from constituency chairpersons in the Greater Accra, Volta, and Central regions of the country.
Dr. Akoto expressed his elation and gratitude for the support shown by the Founding Fathers, emphasizing the significance of their backing. He highlighted his familial connection to the party’s origins and the role his father played in its formation.
“I am elated by the endorsement of the Founding Fathers of the NPP in the Ashanti Region. The promise that their votes will be for me come August 26, 2023 signifies the confidence they have reposed in me and I am very grateful to them for expressing such huge support for my candidature to bear the flag of the NPP”, he noted.
He added, “this show of support by the Founding Fathers is very significant to me because as you know the origin of the party started with the intervention of my father, Baffour Osei Akoto, who together with others, on the 19th of September, 1994 performed certain rites for the creation of the National Liberation Movement (NLM),made up of the Northern Peoples Party, led by the late S.G Dombo;the Togo Congress and others from the Anlo Youth Organisation and the Greater Accra region came together to form the United Party (UP) soon after independence in 1957.
Allen Gyimah, Deputy Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP and Coordinator for ‘Team Akoto’ in the Ashanti Region, underscored the party’s desire for effective leadership in the upcoming elections.
The resounding endorsement from the ‘Big Six’ further solidifies Dr. Akoto’s candidacy as he strives to lead the NPP into the 2024 general elections.
President Akufo-Addo has emphasized the remarkable progress of the country despite challenges.
During the 2023 Founders Day celebrations held at the Jubilee House, he revealed that 88 percent of Ghanaians now have access to safe water and electricity.
He urged the country to acknowledge these milestones amid current difficulties.
President Akufo-Addo reiterated that the pursuit of progress should not be obscured by present uncertainties.
He lauded the increase in national electricity access from 79.3 percent in 2016 to 88.54 percent in 2022, positioning Ghana among the top six countries in Africa.
“Yes, there are difficulties, but let us not forget that 88 percent of Ghanaians presently have access to safe water, the national electricity access rate increased from 79.3 percent in 2016 to 88.54 percent in 2022, making us among the top six in Africa, and we are still expecting to achieve the 90 percent universal access rate by 2024,” he said.
He expressed optimism about achieving a 90 percent universal access rate by 2024.
He emphasized the elimination of financial barriers to education, with free Senior High school education benefiting 1.7 million students. Enrollment figures have reached historic highs, and efforts are underway to ensure gender parity in enrollment.
President Akufo-Addo outlined his commitment to guide Ghana’s transition from a raw material exporter to a value-added industrialized economy.
He acknowledged setbacks caused by factors such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict but affirmed the government’s unwavering pursuit of a ‘Ghana Beyond Aid.’
Focusing on modernization, the President emphasized investment in the digital revolution, health, infrastructure, inner-city communities, security agencies, and anti-corruption initiatives. He projected that these efforts would propel Ghana toward becoming a modern, competitive economy.
Paying tribute to Ghana’s founding fathers for their vision and sacrifices, President Akufo-Addo underscored the need to break free from neo-colonial economic structures.
He emphasized building a prosperous, developed, and progressive nation, fulfilling the responsibility of being the first sub-Saharan colonial country to gain independence.
The event was attended by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Chief Justice Getrude Torkenoo, Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare (Chief of Staff, Office of the President), former first lady Nana Agyemang Rawlings, and Mr. Sam Okudzeto, a member of the Council of State.
The Ministry of Transport has announced that commercial mini buses, commonly referred to as Trotro, along with taxis and private cars, are set to undergo a transition from traditional fossil fuels to electric power.
In an effort to curb the harmful impact of fossil fuels on the environment and address global warming, a transition from traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is underway.
This change encompasses a variety of vehicles, including commercial mini buses commonly referred to as Trotro, taxis, and private cars.
One noteworthy initiative is the upcoming trial of an all-electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Kumasi. This move reflects a commitment to reducing toxic emissions and preventing the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which contributes to the warming of the planet.
The transition is not a sudden switch but a gradual process expected to unfold over the span of 10 to 50 years.
Deputy Minister for Transport, Hassan Sulemana Tampuli, emphasized the global nature of this transition, noting that it is happening worldwide and Ghana is actively participating to ensure its sustainable development.
Tampuli underscored the necessity of embracing this change and avoiding being caught off-guard by inevitable developments. He acknowledged that while Africa’s carbon emissions are relatively small on a global scale, it is the responsibility of every nation to contribute to preserving the environment.
During a consultation with stakeholders in the transportation industry, Tampuli discussed the policy’s challenges and potential solutions. One question addressed was the fate of the numerous petrol stations across the country.
Tampuli assured that these stations will continue to operate as the transition progresses, as EVs will not immediately replace all traditional vehicles. Heavy-duty vehicles and trucks will still rely on petroleum products.
To avoid financial pitfalls encountered by other countries during their transition, such as the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Transport is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Finance. Additionally, the country is actively engaging in discussions with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to refine the taxation structure for EV imports.
In terms of infrastructure, the consultation is considering the design and nature of the country’s road networks to accommodate EVs effectively. Tampuli emphasized the significance of accelerating rural electrification to facilitate the smooth integration of EVs.
Furthermore, Ghana’s ample lithium-ion deposits are expected to play a vital role in supporting the EV agenda. The government is exploring ways to maximize this valuable resource to drive the transition.
In the context of energy production, Ghana currently generates sufficient energy to meet its demands. This self-sufficiency provides a solid foundation for the transition to electric transportation.
Lastly, Tampuli highlighted the collective determination of African Heads of State and governments to prevent the continent from becoming a dumping ground for fossil fuel vehicles from more developed nations during their own transition to EVs.
This stance underscores Africa’s commitment to responsible environmental practices and sustainable development.

The Cabinet has granted its approval to a fresh policy that governs the utilization, administration, and oversight of lithium and other environmentally friendly minerals within the country.
Termed as “minerals of the future,” green minerals encompass metals and mineral resources essential for facilitating the transition towards clean energy technologies, aimed at curbing carbon emissions.
A diverse array of minerals categorized as green minerals encompass bauxite, cobalt, copper, lithium, granite, manganese, and nickel.
Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, informed the Daily Graphic last Thursday that the Cabinet endorsed this policy on July 27 of this year after thorough examination.
Thus, the newly established Green Minerals Policy introduces modifications to the 2014 Mining and Minerals Policy to integrate comprehensive and forward-looking systems that will allow the nation to derive maximum advantages from lithium and other green minerals.
Mr. Jinapor conveyed that this fresh policy would lead to legislative interventions by the Parliament, including amendments to the Minerals and Mining Act of 2006 (Act 703), with the relevant processes already underway.
As an example, he noted that while Act 703 stipulated a mineral royalty rate ranging from three to five percent, the new policy would establish a distinct royalty framework for green minerals.
“I reached out to the CEO of the Minerals Commission last week, requesting a strategy document within a week for implementing the principles of this policy. Our aim is to expedite this process,” the minister expressed.
Policy Implications
“I won’t reveal the exact rate for green mineral royalties for now, but I can confirm that it will surpass the existing rate for gold. The key point is that the royalty system for green minerals will differ from that of gold and other minerals,” Mr. Jinapor affirmed.
Furthermore, the minister emphasized that the new policy would require a higher level of local involvement in the green minerals value chain, deviating from the current 10 percent vested interest that the state holds in mining entities.
“We will insist on a specific minimum Ghanaian participation that will unquestionably exceed 10 percent. I am hesitant to provide precise figures at this time. A Cabinet decision on a baseline exists, and we will not go beneath that threshold in any negotiations concerning our lithium and other green minerals,” he emphasized.
Mr. Jinapor added that the overarching objective of the new policy was rooted in the principle that the exploitation of green minerals should primarily benefit the Ghanaian populace, who are the true proprietors of these resources.
He noted that due to this principle, the foundational components for exploiting green minerals would diverge from those that pertain to gold, particularly.
Value Addition
The minister stressed that the central focus of the new policy was on value addition to ensure active Ghanaian involvement in the value chain.
“Hence, the mining and export of raw lithium is strictly prohibited,” he emphasized.
Mr. Jinapor also highlighted that the policy aimed to introduce incentives and measures to attract the necessary investments. This would encompass stability clauses, development agreements, and other mechanisms to provide investors with the confidence to allocate resources to the sector.
He assured that these arrangements would be established in a manner that achieves a fair equilibrium, resulting in a mutually beneficial scenario for both the country and the investor community.
“We will conduct negotiations on a case-by-case basis, all within the framework of this new policy,” he explained.
In addition to green minerals like bauxite, manganese, graphite, and cobalt, Ghana has discovered commercially viable deposits of lithium, particularly in Ewoyaa, located in the Central Region.
Lithium
Several African nations, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali, also possess commercial lithium reserves, while Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Namibia are home to graphite deposits.
Globally, the lithium sector alone is estimated to be worth $11 billion during the mining stage, with its highest potential value estimated at $7 trillion.
Given this context, Mr. Jinapor underscored that the green minerals policy specifically aims to enhance the value of lithium prior to exporting it.
He clarified that contrary to reports of licenses being issued for lithium mining, the government had not granted any such licenses.
“No individual or entity holds permits or licenses for mining or exploiting lithium. The licenses that were issued were for exploration, which is distinct from exploitation,” he emphasized.
He further explained that it was through exploration activities that commercial-grade lithium was discovered at Ewoyaa.
Mr. Jinapor concluded that while the next step involves mining this mineral resource, the government’s primary focus is on establishing the policy framework before progressing to mining operations.
The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lacks alternative strategies to counter the government’s economic revitalization policies.
He noted that NDC members have been disparaging the economy and negating its progress.
Ahiagbah added, “the NDC’s criticism of the economy arises from their inability to provide viable alternatives to challenge the government’s policy initiatives aimed at rejuvenating our economy. The economy has taken a positive turn, and it is imperative for Ghanaians to support the government in stabilizing it.”
It’s noteworthy that the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, challenged Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s claim that the economy had turned a corner.
Dr. Forson argued that the Finance Minister’s policies exacerbated Ghana’s economic difficulties.
Ofori-Atta, during the mid-year budget review presentation, shared that the government had successfully averted dire situations, such as shortages of essential items and fuel queues. He acknowledged the collective efforts and investments made since March 2020 to navigate challenges.
Responding to Dr. Forson’s statements, Ahiagbah criticized the NDC for intentionally deceiving the public and attempting to undermine the government’s popularity. He denounced their partisan approach and highlighted their lack of substantive ideas to address the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War.
Ahiagbah stated, “The NDC’s assertion that the mid-year fiscal revisions invalidate the notion of turning a corner is unfounded and should not be taken seriously. Their absence of constructive ideas is evident, and their strategy seems to be discrediting the government’s genuine efforts to mitigate pandemic and war-related economic impacts.”
He urged Ghanaians to recognize that if the NDC were in power, the country’s situation might have worsened due to their apparent dearth of innovative proposals.
He emphasized the need to assess the NDC’s contributions since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War, highlighting their lack of original ideas to support economic recovery.
The long-awaited inauguration of the Tamale International Airport’s Phase 2 project is set to take place this month.
The completion of the $70-million project was initially expected in August of the previous year. After a year of continued efforts, test runs are currently underway in preparation for the anticipated commissioning.
Passengers who recently used the newly constructed Phase 2 terminal during test runs expressed their satisfaction, foreseeing significant benefits for the Northern region of Ghana.
“I’m happy the airport is going to be commissioned soon because it will open massive developments for the area,” one of the first passengers to use the Tamale International Airport terminal stated.
Another also said, “We cannot wait for the airport to be operational, it will create jobs for residents”.
The upgraded facility is expected to contribute to massive developments and job opportunities in the area.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shanai Alhassan Shaibu, highlighted the completion of Phase II work during a press engagement in September 2022.
He expressed confidence in the positive economic impact the improved airport will have on the region.
The modernized Tamale International Airport features a modular terminal building, a Hajj facility, access roads, and essential infrastructure, promising enhanced operations and growth for the region.
Former President, John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has strongly criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to abandon the Saglemi Housing Project and allocate over GHc500 million to the National Cathedral project.
Mahama alleged that the government’s abandonment of the Saglemi Housing Project was solely due to its initiation during his administration.
President Akufo-Addo had recently launched a new housing project with private sector support, justifying the abandonment of Saglemi due to potential increased national debt.
In response, Mahama accused the government of misplaced priorities, condemning the allocation of funds to a national cathedral while neglecting a housing project aimed at providing affordable homes for Ghanaians.
He criticized the government’s refusal to complete the Saglemi project, calling it a “humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians” and suggesting political motives behind the decision.
Mahama emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of citizens and ensuring that government resources benefit the people, regardless of the project’s initiator.
He expressed disappointment in the government’s choices, highlighting the missed opportunity to provide decent living conditions and homes for countless Ghanaian families through the Saglemi Housing Project.
“It is unacceptable for Akufo-Addo to spend over half a billion cedis on a national cathedral project that has ultimately failed due to corruption and is now abandoned, yet refuses to commit funds to complete a housing project that will benefit thousands of Ghanaian families.
“Knowing the NPP government, they did not want to complete the Saglemi housing project simply because it was initiated by John Mahama and an NDC administration.
“Leaders must always prioritise the well-being of their citizens and ensure that they benefit from government resources and projects, regardless of who initiated them.
“The misplaced priorities of a government that claim it is unable to raise money to complete the Saglemi housing project and yet is willing to spend half a billion cedis on the largest civil excavation in Africa is a humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians who entrusted Akufo Addo with their mandate.
“Just think about the countless number of Ghanaian families who could have had decent living conditions over the past 7 years and the individuals who could have had a place to truly call home in Saglemi.
Candidates participating in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in Effia-Kwesimintsim struggled to find exam centers at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) and Takoradi Secondary School on Monday morning, August 7, 2023.
This year’s BECE test has 3,365 candidates, with 99 public and private schools participating in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Directorate of Education.
According to reports at the Takoradi Technical University campus, where 76 test centers had been established, some school teachers and their students were trapped in locating their center with only three minutes until the commencement of the Religious and Moral Education examination.
Effia-Kwesimintsim Director of Education, Catherine Biney, speaking to the media, she explained that the initial challenges of candidates finding their centers were typical for the first day.
She attributed the situation, largely, to Takoradi Technical University’s ongoing session, which resulted in scattered centers across the campus.
“We have 7 centers: six at Takoradi Technical University and one at Takoradi Secondary School. TTU has 76 schools writing here, and 23 are at Takoradi Secondary School. Exam preparation is well organized with materials distributed to centers. On the first day, we expect center location problems, which we are resolving. Everything is set, and we are awaiting the papers,” Biney stated.
Due to TTU’s ongoing classes, Biney clarified that the university provided part of its premises for the exam centers, resulting in scattered locations. She highlighted the role of invigilators and supervisors in guiding candidates to their assigned centers and ensuring a smooth process.
“We have 7 centres and for Takoradi Technical University we have six centres and the remaining one is at Takoradi Secondary School. For TTU alone, 76 schools are writing here and 23 are writing at Takoradi Secondary School. So far the exam preparation is well organized with materials distributed to the various centres. Today being the first day, we will have problems with candidates looking for their centres and that is what we are sorting out, but everything is set, and we are waiting for the papers to come.”
“They have to give us the centres to write the exams but because school is in session for TTU, they just gave us part of their premises that would cater for the number of candidates that are coming here. So the centres are scattered. You just can’t have all of them in one place, if you don’t know the terrain, you will have difficulty in locating a centre, but the invigilators and supervisors will take them there and direct themselves as to what to do,” she said.

With a sharp focus on the political landscape and an intimate knowledge of the party’s dynamics, Botwe emphasized the crucial need for a strategic choice to secure victory in the approaching elections.
After thorough contemplation and careful analysis, Botwe confidently proclaimed, “Considering all factors, I believe that electing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as our flagbearer is the most strategic decision for the NPP.” His endorsement garnered applause from attendees. He further highlighted Bawumia’s impressive track record of competence and steadfast loyalty to the NPP as key reasons behind his endorsement.
President Akufo-Addo has embarked on an enthusiastic campaign to promote the salt mining company Electrochem operating in the Ada region.
The establishment of Electrochem had previously incited protests among residents due to concerns about the acquisition of salt ponds.
However, during this year’s Asafotufiami festival, President Akufo-Addo sought the community’s support and emphasized that the Ada-Songor Salt project led by Electrochem has the potential to drive local development.
“We want all the people in Ada to support this project because it has the capacity to transform the economy, and the lives of all the people of Ada and our country. I want all of you to continue to give maximum support to the activities of Electrochem,” President Akufo-Addo advised.
President Akufo-Addo encouraged all Ada residents to back the project, stating, “We want all the people in Ada to support this project because it has the capacity to transform the economy, and the lives of all the people of Ada and our country. I want all of you to continue to give maximum support to the activities of Electrochem.”
Earlier in June, President Akufo-Addo urged the chiefs and people of Ada to permit the salt mining company’s operations in the area.
Despite residents’ resistance and various concerns, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the significance of accepting the Ada Salt Project.
The allocation of the Songor salt concession to Dr. Daniel McKorley, chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, for mining has sparked multiple controversies, including protests and legal disputes.
About 15 individuals from Awoshie Mangoase, Accra have been apprehended by the police for obstructing sections of the Awoshie to Pokuase Highway.
The road was blocked in response to a car accident that occurred Monday morning, that left a pedestrian injured.
The residents staged the roadblock to protest the recurring incidents of vehicles striking pedestrians along the road.
They voiced concerns about approximately 45 individuals being hit by vehicles this year alone.
“Since January 2024, about 45 people have been knocked down in this area, they have just killed someone this morning, and they have refused to give us a permit after a series of calls.
“The police officers don’t have our issues at heart, they only come here when we agitate,” the residents complained.
Residents have called on authorities to take action by installing speed bumps and repairing malfunctioning traffic lights along the route.
They expressed dissatisfaction with the police response, stating that officers only show up when residents protest.
President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, has addressed concerns surrounding perceived bias towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC) within the association.
Mr Boafo emphasized GBA’s dedication to upholding justice and fairness for all political parties, including the NDC.
He underscored the independent and unbiased nature of Ghana’s legal system during a discussion on the Citi Breakfast Show on August 7.
Reassuring the public, Boafo asserted that the GBA maintains its impartiality and is resolute in upholding the rule of law under all circumstances.
While some members of the public have suggested that the GBA remained quiet on certain matters during the NPP administration despite being vocal during the Mills and Mahama administrations, Boafo refuted such perceptions.
He highlighted GBA’s overarching mandate to ensure justice without discrimination based on political affiliations.
Addressing these sentiments, Boafo stated, “No one can convincingly argue that the Bar treated the NDC unfairly during President Mills or Mahama’s tenure compared to the current president’s term”.
Boafo concluded by encouraging political parties and citizens to maintain trust in the judicial system’s capacity to uphold the rule of law.
ASP Abednego Atsah, heading the investigation in the trial of Michael Nyinaku, founder of the defunct Beige Bank, has testified in the Accra High Court that his investigation did not find evidence of Nyinaku personally receiving or misusing funds from counts one to nine of the charges.
The 5th Prosecution Witness (PW5), ASP Atuah, confirmed that throughout the investigation, there was no indication that Nyinaku had directly received payments as indicated by the records presented during the inquiry.
Testifying in the Financial and Economic Division of the Accra High Court, ASP Atsah reassured that the charges brought against Nyinaku, which include nine counts of stealing, 25 counts of fraudulent breach of trust, and nine counts of money laundering, were based on his association as a shareholder or director of companies to whom funds were allocated.
During cross-examination led by defense lawyers, including Lawyer Thaddeus Sory, ASP Atsah maintained that the prosecution’s charges were formulated based on Nyinaku’s affiliation with the companies involved.
While Count One of the charges alleges that Nyinaku stole funds belonging to Beige Bank and transferred them to Alberry Company Limited, ASP Atsah clarified that his investigation showed the funds originated from First Africa Savings and Loans (FASL) and were transferred to Alberry.
Cross-examination revealed that all funds transferred to Alberry were disbursed for legitimate services, with no evidence of payments made to Nyinaku.
The ongoing testimony seeks to substantiate the charges leveled against Michael Nyinaku in the trial.

Emmanuel Barnes, widely recognized as Mr Logic and the Chairman of the Ghana Association of Songwriters, has weighed in on the ongoing LGBTQ discourse.
Expressing his viewpoint, he questions the LGBTQ community’s pursuit of public validation for their sexual orientation.
In an interview on August 5, Mr Logic expressed his perplexity, suggesting that individuals within the LGBTQ community could have engaged in their activities privately, without the need for external validation.
Mr Logic remarked, “I hold them accountable because why do they seek validation? This is their dilemma. If a person prefers same-sex pleasure, why should someone else grant them a permission? You have the inherent right to decide what you do with your body. They shouldn’t require validation from others to engage in their sexual preferences. It’s not as if gay individuals even comprehend the full extent of their rights.”
He further elaborated by pointing out that many heterosexual couples partake in anal intercourse within their relationships but maintain their privacy. Hence, he argued that the LGBTQ community’s demand for validation is unnecessary.
“Engage in these activities discreetly. There are numerous men who engage in anal intercourse with their wives. Such practices transpire behind closed doors. Some women even find pleasure in it,” he added.

Veteran actor, Pete Edochie, has broken his silence regarding his son Yul Edochie’s recent divorce from his first wife, May.
In an interview with the media, Pete Edochie revealed that he had no knowledge of Yul’s subsequent marriage to his second wife, Judy Austin.
He emphasized his principle of refraining from meddling in his children’s personal lives.
Pete Edochie commended May’s exceptional qualities, describing her as a brilliant young woman with a knack for computers.
Among the daughters-in-law in his family, she held a special place in his heart, earning the status of his favorite.
Reflecting on Yul’s union with Judy Austin, he employed an Igbo adage to convey his perspective, likening the act to bringing ant-infested wood home from the farm, an open invitation for unwelcome guests.
In heartfelt admiration of May, Pete Edochie expressed a lasting affection for her, viewing her not only as a daughter-in-law but as his own daughter.
He attributed much of the success in Yul’s previous marriage to May’s influence and contribution.
He cautioned against misguided advice, asserting that those who dispense such counsel often lack stable homes themselves.
See the reactions the video stirred online
@anezi: “See how he spoke about May….. the success of That home was to May’s credit. See how this father-in-law spoke so beautifully about his Daughter in law.”
@srigeorgeom: “It Takes A Lot For A Father In Law To Be This Honest. He Knows That His Son F Up.”
@j.scents_more: “I worked for May and Yul at their first store at Sangote when she was selling wine and clothes. I lived with them at Crown Estate Ajah, for a fact, that woman is intelligent. She does her kids home work her self, the day she drew Nigerian coat of arms for her son, I respected her. Mama knows computer like her palm.”
@ogamaestro: “He said Mary is being wrongly advised and absolved his son of any blame. “My son could have” no “My son is responsible” no. Blame everyone but the son. Gotta love African parents.”
@levinahairclub: “People want him to abuse Yul publicly, No . Yul remains his son, right now he is prodigal and that is what prayer will solve, he is a man and men don’t talk anyhow, you people should read between the lines, the praise he gave May though guarded is powerful, the success of the marriage , he attributed to her.”
@uchayude: “He probably wants May to hang in there and fight for her home instead of leaving her home for Judy.”
@__amaka.onwe: “The success of that home is credited to May, I pray the love and sacrifices you make never be returned back to you with a slap!”
@thembi5103: “Yul has show that no matter how well a child is trained, he can decide to be a nuisance after leaving the parents house..yul will definitely regret his actions but then it too late already, his internet shenanigans is so hard to ignore.”
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has commended the House for passing the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which eliminates the Death Penalty in Ghana.
Bagbin stated that the House has meticulously examined 14 of the 15 laws related to the Death Penalty. The last remaining law pertains to the Constitutional Article – Article 3(3) of the 1992 Constitution, which establishes the offense of high treason.
Recognizing the complexity of amending this entrenched clause, Bagbin appealed to the President to sign the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, thereby finalizing the abolition of the Death Penalty.
This protocol serves as a supplementary agreement to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Speaking in his closing remarks on the Parliament floor before the adjournment for the Second Meeting of the Third Session of the Eighth Parliament of Ghana, Bagbin highlighted that the passage of the Bill has propelled Ghana into a higher echelon of democratic nations.
“It is a resounding testament to the House’s dedication to human rights and democracy… and a clear declaration of our commitment to the rule of law,” he asserted.
Quoting Martin Luther King Jr., Bagbin emphasized, “The old law of an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.”
He reiterated that through the Bill’s passage, the House has further illuminated Ghana’s pro-abolitionist stance adopted since 1993.
Bagbin implored the President to sign the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aligning with the spirit of the Amendment. This step would bring the abolition of the Death Penalty in Ghana to fruition.
The House also successfully passed the Anti-Witchcraft Accusation Bill, an achievement that resonated positively with the people of Ghana.
“We have advocated for the marginalized, the elderly, and their gratitude is genuine,” Bagbin expressed.
He underscored that the citizens of Ghana hold Parliament in high regard and are ready to support the House in fulfilling its mandate.
Bagbin noted that Ghanaians have closely followed the House’s progress, including the developments concerning the Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.
He shared that the Muslim community in Ghana bestowed an award upon the House, a gesture of appreciation for Members’ efforts. Bagbin humorously remarked, “They wish they could place the award on all 275 heads in the House, but that’s not feasible. It ended up on my head, not yours, for today, and that’s why I’m adorned in this manner.”
“They recognize you, they thank you, they honor you for your contributions.”
The House is set to reconvene for the Third Meeting of its Third Session in the third week of October.
