Jamie Foxx apologizes for ‘antisemitic’ Instagram post

Actor Jamie Foxx, 55, has issued an apology for a deleted Instagram post that garnered accusations of antisemitism.

The post in question stated, “They killed this dude name Jesus… what do you think they’ll do to you???! #fakefriends #fakelove”.

Several social media users interpreted Foxx’s words as echoing an antisemitic notion that Jewish individuals collectively bear responsibility for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, a belief that was officially refuted by the Roman Catholic Church in 1965.

Foxx addressed the criticism in a subsequent Instagram post on Saturday, expressing remorse: “I want to apologize to the Jewish community and everyone who was offended by my post. I now know my choice of words have caused offense and I’m sorry. That was never my intent.”

The Ray star further clarified his intention: “To clarify, I was betrayed by a fake friend and that’s what I meant with ‘they,’ not anything more.”

Notably, Jennifer Aniston faced backlash for appearing to “like” Foxx’s initial post prior to its removal.

The Friends actor responded with a statement on her Instagram, asserting her disapproval of any form of antisemitism.

Fire wipes out 15 wooden structures in Ashaiman, Official Town

A fire outbreak razed approximately 15 wooden structures in Official Town, Ashaiman, on Friday, August 4, around 5:00 pm.

Addressing the press, Gladys Adenyo, a survivor, recounted how she and her three children narrowly escaped the inferno with only their lives and the clothes they were wearing.

Sitting under a tree opposite her house, Gladys spotted smoke emanating from a room, prompting her to alert neighbors and seek assistance from the nearby Ashaiman Municipal Fire station.

Ghana National Fire Service personnel arrived swiftly to quell the fire, aided by concerned residents.

Tragically, victims like Gladys lost everything to the blaze, including her newly settled home.

Gladys, a single mother who had moved to Official Town three months prior, described the incident as a devastating setback.

Apart from shelter, she’s anxious about her children’s schooling as their uniforms, shoes, and books were reduced to ashes.

Amidst tears, Gladys appealed for support from those capable of helping her family through this challenging period. Another victim, Patience Awako, also pleaded for assistance, as she, her five children, and an elderly deaf and dumb woman have no place to stay.

Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (ADOI) Matthew Kumi, Second in Command at the Ashaiman Municipal Fire Station, reported a 20-minute firefighting effort to contain the blaze. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

ADOI Matthew Kumi advised Ashaiman residents to avoid fire-prone activities and emphasized ongoing fire prevention education. He urged them to contact Ghana National Fire Service at 192 or 112 in emergencies.

  • Council of State rejects NDC’s petition on Electoral Commission appointees

Council of State rejects NDC’s petition on Electoral Commission appointees

The Council of State has issued a response to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) petition concerning the approval of Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani as Members of the Electoral Commission.

The Council firmly asserted that the approval recommendation remains unalterable.

In a letter directed to the NDC, the Council clarified that, having thoroughly examined the nominees’ CVs and advised the President, the appointment process was deemed concluded. The subsequent inauguration of the appointees solidified the Council’s role in the process.

“As correctly noted in paragraph 8 of your letter’s third page, following the President’s swearing-in of the two individuals, the Council of State has become functus officio in their appointment process.

“It is hence not feasible to reconsider the recommendations already provided by the Council to the President,” stated Nana Otuo Siriboe, Chairman of the Council of State.

The Council emphasized that once recommendations are submitted to and acted upon by the President, they cannot be revisited within its jurisdiction. This decision effectively closes any avenue to revisit the approval process for Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani.

The nomination of Electoral Commission members significantly upholds Ghana’s democratic process. The Council of State’s role in vetting and advising on these appointments is crucial in safeguarding the Electoral Commission’s integrity and transparency.

While the NDC voiced concerns about the appointees’ perceived NPP affiliations, the Council’s response underscores the diligent execution of the approval process according to established protocols.

Akufo-Addo lauds Pat Thomas for globalizing Ghanaian music

President Akufo-Addo has commended the esteemed highlife icon, Pat Thomas, for his significant contribution to the elevation of Ghanaian music onto the global platform.

Marking Founders Day, Pat Thomas orchestrated a musical extravaganza at the Accra International Conference Centre, celebrating his illustrious five-decade journey in the realm of Ghanaian music.

This event also served a dual purpose – not only a celebration of his musical legacy but also as a fundraiser for his visionary School of Music, Arts, and Culture project in the Ashanti Region.

Addressing the audience at the concert, President Akufo-Addo lauded Pat Thomas as a distinguished musical ambassador for Ghana, who has graced some of the world’s grandest musical stages.

“It is with immense delight that I join you today, on Founders’ Day, to honor the remarkable legacy of one of Ghana’s most iconic musicians, Pat Thomas.”

“In Ghana, music occupies both a personal and national significance. I hold a deep affection for music, particularly the enchanting strains of highlife music. Every opportunity I get, I relish listening and dancing to the tunes of luminaries such as Pat Thomas, Amakye Dede, Daddy Lumba, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, and CK Mann, among others.”

“Our nation’s fame has been enhanced by music, and it’s essential to acknowledge the commendable contribution of Ghanaian music producers in this industry,” he affirmed.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the borderless resonance of Pat Thomas’ melodies, acknowledging his global journey that has taken Ghanaian music to various corners of the world, including Germany, France, Spain, Finland, Australia, Macedonia, and Cape Verde.

“Today, our gathering is not only to commemorate his remarkable musical odyssey but also to embrace the profound cultural heritage embedded within his music.

His exceptional talent, unwavering dedication, and fervor for music have woven connections among individuals from diverse backgrounds. It is my honor to recognize Pat Thomas as a fellow Ghanaian,” President Akufo-Addo expressed.

Support needed in Ghana music industry – Luna Lonzo

A Canadian-based Hip Hop Artist and Sound Curator, Luna Lonzo, has stated that the Ghanaian music industry requires significant advancement to establish a stronger global competitive presence.

In an interview with the media on Friday, August 4, 2023, Luna Lonzo stressed the importance of enhanced internal and external support for the industry’s accelerated growth.

“The industry is still in a phase of development, and I believe there’s ample potential for expansion. If we can garner increased backing from both external sources and our fellow musicians, we can progress collectively and achieve remarkable feats,” he affirmed.

While promoting his music in Ghana, the Mexican-born Canadian rapper extended an appeal to artists within the Ghana music scene to foster collaboration and collectively elevate the industry to higher standards.

Most Ghanaian youths’ attitude towards work is appalling – Michy

A renowned Ghanaian musician, Michy, has expressed her observation that a significant portion of Ghana’s youth exhibit a problematic work attitude, contributing to the prevailing hardships in the country.

She shared this perspective in an interview, where she discussed the inspiration behind her latest song titled ‘Hustle’.

When questioned about whether the government should shoulder the entire blame for the economic challenges faced by the nation, she emphasized that the behavior and mindset of the Ghanaian youth toward work play a role in the issue.

Drawing a comparison with Nigeria, Michy noted that despite the difficulties faced by Nigerians, they manage to accomplish noteworthy achievements.

, “I’d say our work attitude or attitude. A lot of Ghanaian youth have a very bad attitude towards work so we cannot blame them in totality,” she added.

Nigeria is messed up, but Nigerians are making good things happen for themselves. So we can’t blame the government too much.”

Michy further acknowledged that global economic hardships have affected Ghana as well, expressing her belief that the situation will improve in due course.

“While times have become challenging since recent changes, I am confident we are on the path to progress. It’s a worldwide issue, after all. The economic situation is a global concern,” she concluded.

  • National Ambulance Service sensitizes pupils vital life-saving skills

National Ambulance Service sensitizes pupils vital life-saving skills

In a community engagement effort, the National Ambulance Service (NAS) Public Relations Unit, along with the Greater Accra Regional Administration, has initiated a range of activities to inform Ghanaians about the importance of acquiring basic first aid knowledge.

He shared that the service was established in 2004 following the Accra sports stadium disaster, during President J.A Kuffour’s tenure, to enhance emergency care in Ghana.

Mr. Kewura also explained how the NAS has grown over the years, expanding from seven ambulance stations in 2004 to a remarkable 296 stations across the country.

He mentioned that an Act of Parliament was enacted in 2020 to provide legal support to NAS, largely due to the commendable efforts of Prof. Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah, the CEO of the Service.

The core mandate of the NAS, Mr. Kewura conveyed, is to deliver pre-hospital emergency care services to the public. He emphasized that the Service plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety and responding to national disasters. He highlighted the importance of dialing 112 in case of an ambulance requirement.

PAEMT Daniel Asare, the Greater Accra Regional Administrative Manager for the National Ambulance Service, clarified that the primary objective of the training was to equip the school community with essential skills to manage emergencies effectively.

    I was body-shamed for being plus-size – Eniola Badmus

Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus has expressed her distress over the continuous stream of defamatory remarks directed at her through social media platforms.

She shared her ordeal, highlighting the intense scrutiny she endured regarding her body image when she was plus-sized. Even now, as she embarks on her fitness journey, she continues to face disparaging comments due to her political affiliations.

It’s worth noting that TikToker Okoye Blessing Nwakego, known as Ego, was recently handed a three-year prison sentence by a Federal High Court in Lagos for falsely accusing Badmus of facilitating connections between women and high-ranking politicians for illicit purposes.

Taking to her Twitter account on Friday, Badmus confronted the unjust defamatory statements made about her and reminded the public that celebrities are also humans with emotions.

“Without presenting a single shred of evidence, some individuals feel entitled to create damaging videos tarnishing my character. But why? In the past, when I was plus-sized, I experienced body shaming at its peak. Now, during my journey towards better fitness and health, I still face negative comments. The same negativity follows my personal political choices.”

Badmus pleaded with everyone to respect individuals’ lives and decisions, emphasizing that some people possess the resilience to withstand such pressures, unlike those who quietly grapple with depression and a diminished self-image.

“Just like you, celebrities are human beings. We have feelings, emotions, and veins coursing with blood. You’re not judged for your life choices or your unique path, so why subject me to judgment for my personal and human actions?” she questioned.

‘No corner has been turned’ – Joe Jackson refutes Ofori-Atta’s claims

The Economist and Director of Operations at Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has rejected assertions made by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, regarding the country’s economic upturn and its trajectory toward recovery.

Jackson contends that the country’s economy remains critically unwell and likened it to being in the “Intensive Care Unit.”

He criticized Ofori-Atta for not being candid about the state of the economy during his presentation on the Mid-Year Budget review in Parliament.

Ofori-Atta had informed Parliament that Ghana was gradually achieving progress in reversing the economic challenges faced in 2022.

“Mr. Speaker, we have turned the corner and, more importantly, we are determined to continue down that path. Soon, we expect the measures taken to result in economic activity greater than anything experienced in the history of the Fourth Republic. Our plans and programmes should soon lead to a sustained increase in domestic production, including manufacturing and farming, replacing many of the products that we are used to importing,” the Finance Minister stated.

He highlighted the government’s efforts and their positive outcomes, urging the nation to acknowledge the strides made over the past three years.

However, Joe Jackson, speaking to the media, outlined several ongoing issues affecting Ghana’s economy. He pointed out persistent problems in revenue generation, a mounting public debt, and insufficient substantial economic growth necessary for meaningful development.

Jackson remarked, “I would say we’ve turned the corner when we’re out of the critical phase, but as of now, the economy is still in the ICU. It’s a disservice to the people to claim otherwise.”

The economist emphasized the urgency of curbing unnecessary government expenditures to address the fiscal deficit.

“I will say that we have turned the corner when we have moved to the recovery ward but at this moment this economy is still in the ICU and I think it is a disservice to the people of this country to say that we have turned the corner,” Mr Jackson said.

He called for a reduction in the size of the government, streamlining bureaucratic structures, and prioritizing essential sectors for sustainable financial management.

In an interview with the media, the songstress voiced her strong discontent with the prevailing practice of categorizing female musicians as ‘female artistes,’ while their male counterparts are simply referred to as ‘artistes.’

With unwavering fervor, Wendy Shay fervently championed the cause for parity and recognition.

She resolutely proclaimed that women in the music industry invest an equivalent, if not greater, amount of effort compared to their male counterparts, and thus, they merit acknowledgment as ‘artistes’ without any gender-based distinctions.

Her resolute stance illuminates the urgent matter of gender inequality in the realm of music and underscores the necessity for an impartial and all-encompassing industry.

Wendy Shay’s advocacy stands as a wellspring of inspiration for all women aspiring to shatter barriers and confront societal conventions, thereby cultivating an atmosphere where skill and diligence receive acknowledgement devoid of prejudice or bias.

“It’s inequitable. To start with, I’m not even fond of the notion that people use ‘female artistes’ because you don’t witness our male peers being tagged as ‘male artistes.’ They’re recognized as artistes, and likewise, we should be acknowledged. We are artistes,” she articulated.

She spotlighted the tenacity and devotion of female musicians such as herself and Sister Efya, underscoring the substantial exertion and dedication they pour in, which undeniably warrant recognition and acclaim.

He stated that there are ample supplies to cater to those affected by the virus until the next year.

He clarified that while donor partners assist with drugs for around 125,000 individuals, Ghana must secure funding for the remaining 250,000 people living with the virus.

The commission intends to mobilize resources to purchase additional retroviral drugs.

Dr. Atuahene emphasized the need for alternative funding sources to ensure a steady supply of medications from next year onwards.

He noted that if the required pharmaceuticals are not obtained, rationing might become necessary in the future.

However, he reassured that there is currently no rationing in place and the commission is actively working to prevent any potential issues.

“If we don’t have enough by next year, we may have to consider rationing.” But, for the time being, we do not have rationing. Those who rely on narcotics would perish without them, which we must prevent.”

  • Recent building collapses blamed on MMDAs

Recent building collapses blamed on MMDAs

Architect and Facility Management Consultant, Samuel Opare Agyemang, has placed partial blame on the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for the recent building collapses in the country, citing their negligence in fulfilling their supervisory responsibilities.

During an interview with the media, Mr. Agyemang highlighted that the MMDAs are struggling to effectively oversee construction projects within their jurisdictions due to a lack of resources, including vehicles for monitoring purposes.

He explained that the MMDAs are tasked with evaluating projects before granting permits and conducting inspections at various stages of the building process.

He expressed his belief that a significant portion, around 90%, of the blame for these incidents rests with the Municipal Assemblies for not adhering to these critical oversight duties.

Mr. Agyemang also identified the use of poor-quality construction materials as a contributing factor to building collapses.

He raised concerns about substandard materials, particularly citing issues with non-standard iron rod sizes, which can compromise the structural integrity of buildings.

Moreover, he pointed out that the involvement of unqualified individuals, such as masons rather than architects, in construction projects contributes to the problem.

Many Ghanaians, he noted, tend to prefer hiring masons instead of qualified architects, which can lead to errors in design and construction.

The discussion was prompted by the collapse of a wall at a construction site in Ofankor North near Accra on August 2, resulting in one confirmed fatality and several injuries.

This funding will be allocated to support the implementation of the PROSPER initiative, officially known as the Promoting Rural Opportunities, Sustainable Profits, and Environmental Resilience project.

The financial package comprises two components: a standard loan of $35 million and a concessional loan of $17 million.

At its core, the PROSPER project seeks to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers and businesses operating in the priority value chains within the Northern and Middle Ecological belts, thus promoting their integration, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability.

The strategic approach of the project involves capitalizing on the growing demand fostered by the national agro-processing strategy. This strategy aims to amplify the value added to the agricultural sector, ultimately boosting its contributions to the national economy.

Patrick Boamah, the Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee, provided an overview of the terms and conditions governing this loan arrangement. The repayment period spans two decades, allowing ample time for the government to settle the borrowed sum.

Furthermore, the loan incorporates a grace period lasting five years, affording an initial phase during which no repayment obligations exist.

The specifics of the loan agreement stipulate a service charge of 1.48 percent per annum, designated as the fee for IFAD’s administrative role in managing the loan.

Additionally, an annual interest rate of 1.36 percent will be levied on the remaining balance of the loan.

Anticipated outcomes of the PROSPER project include a substantial positive influence on the agricultural sector within the specified regions.

By bolstering the resilience and profitability of smallholder farmers and businesses, the project will actively advocate for sustainable practices and the preservation of the environment.

  • NPP is the best choice for 2024, not NDC – Akufo-Addo

NPP is the best choice for 2024, not NDC – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exert their utmost efforts in securing victory for the party in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The foremost statesman emphasized that the party must not allow a recurrence of the setbacks suffered in 2008 to mar their prospects in 2024.

He stressed the importance of preventing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from assuming power in Ghana in the foreseeable future.

President Akufo-Addo underscored the need to learn from the past, particularly the period from 2009 to 2017 when the NDC, under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, undermined the significant progress achieved during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s tenure.

“We are all witnesses to the derailing of the achievements chalked by President John Agyekum Kufuor by the successor NDC government, from 2009 to 2017, in which John Dramani Mahama featured so prominently,” the President noted.

“Under 8 years of the successor NDC government, we became famous for all the wrong reasons. Four successive years of dumsor, the mismanagement of the economy, wrong and dangerous energy contracts, and wanton corruption dissipated any hope the Ghanaian had for sustained economic development. Never again should we allow this to happen.”

“We are expending some of our energies hurling invectives at each other, instead of at our opponents, and, in the process, taking digs at our own Government. It has been an anxious time for all who love our party, and who see us as the party that can bring progress and prosperity to our nation,” he said.

He lamented, “During the successive eight years of the NDC administration, our reputation suffered due to consistent power outages, economic mismanagement, questionable energy agreements, and rampant corruption.

This eroded the optimism that Ghanaians held for sustainable economic advancement. We must never permit a repetition of such circumstances.”

The President acknowledged that internal conflicts had diverted energies towards internal disputes instead of uniting against external opponents, thereby inadvertently criticizing their own governance.

He expressed concern over the challenges that had surfaced within the party, noting the pivotal role of the NPP in driving the nation’s progress and prosperity.

President Akufo-Addo, in his capacity as both the head of state and de facto party leader, pledged to prevent the recurrence of past mistakes that contributed to the party’s loss in 2008.

He called for an internal campaign that transcends ethnic or religious considerations, highlighting the necessity of a united front in pursuing their political goals.

  • Leaders with values essential for Ghana’s growth – Fifi Kwetey

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, has advocated a return to strong leadership values as a remedy for Ghana’s economic challenges.

In an interview with the media, Kwetey lamented the erosion of morals among current leaders and emphasizes the importance of leaders with values and a genuine passion for the nation.

He criticized President Akufo Addo and Vice President Bawumia, asserting that both lack these crucial qualities.

Kwetey underscored that the NDC was founded on values and urges the party to uphold and differentiate itself based on those values.

He asserted that values define one’s character and drive and that the NDC’s focus on values is even more significant than policy positions.

He urges the NDC to prioritize rebuilding and embracing its core values before formulating policies.

Kwetey believes that strong values are essential for effective policy implementation and transformation.

He blames Ghana’s economic challenges on the NPP’s lack of love for the nation and fiscal irresponsibility.

“Positioning ourselves as people with values, different from the NPP is even more important than policies. Values are critical because values define who you are. Anyone can have a policy but any policy proposed by people with no values become an empty husk and will show their degeneration just as we are seeing now.

“The NDC is not made up of perfect people”, he said, “we do not also claim to have all the answers, but Ghana is safer in our hands”.

The General Secretary stated that “Ghana’s economic meltdown is not from Covid or Russia -Ukraine war but the fact is that the NPP that supervised the collapse of our country does not have the humility to accept that their lack of love for nation and fiscal irresponsibility led us here.”

Kwetey criticized the NPP’s leadership style and accuses them of prioritizing political power over the nation’s welfare.

Kwetey concluded by asserting that the NPP relies on falsehoods to win power and warns of the deeper consequences of their leadership and moral collapse, stating that it outweighs the current economic crisis.
