    Kasoa-Mallam Road flooded after rain

Early morning rainfall on Thursday, July 6, 2023, has caused portions of the Kasoa-Mallam road submerged in floodwaters.

The affected areas include West Hills Junction, SCC traffic intersection, and Ataala-Old Barrier.

Video journalist Kwame Adzaho-Amenortor captured the extent of the situation.

The heavy downpour lasted for approximately 30 minutes and disrupted the movement of commuters, who faced difficulties finding transportation.

The recurring issue, caused by water runoff from nearby hills, has raised concerns among residents.

They are urging the relevant authorities to address the problem promptly and rectify the damages on the road.

The residents have also requested the government’s involvement in engaging road engineers to resolve the issue.

Larteh residents to boycott election 2024

Residents of Larteh Akuapem in the Akuapem North Municipality have threatened to boycott the 2024 general elections if government fails to address the deplorable state of roads in the area.

They hold the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area and previous governments responsible for their inability to fix the roads, leading to a standstill in economic activities.

Frustrated residents and drivers in Larteh have expressed their grievances, highlighting the urgent need for proper road infrastructure.

The roads are riddled with gullies and large potholes, causing damage to vehicles.

“I don’t think it is a road that you can be happy about as a municipality or even as a place like Larteh. Larteh is a well-known place but the road that leads to the place is terrible, and it is hindering tourists and other people from coming to see how beautiful the town is.”

It was for that reason he said the roads must be fixed as a matter of urgency to improve development in the town.

Another resident, Patrick Kwaku Mantey said that “I am very worried, it has been very problematic for the past 10 years. If you look at the road there are patches, but immediately it rains everything gets spoilt again.”

“We have constantly spoken about the roads and there has even been a situation where chiefs and community members holding the MP to a ransom but to no avail.”

He made a heartfelt plea to the government, urging them to allocate funds to the contractor to initiate road construction. He emphasized that if this is not done, the residents of Larteh will refuse to participate in the 2024 elections.

Furthermore, during the inauguration of the Larteh Fire Station, the Chief of Larteh addressed the Minister of Interior and other high-ranking service commanders, appealing to the government to prioritize the construction of the Mamfe to Ayikuma road.

Responding to the chief’s request the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong gave an assurance that a contractor will come to the road by the end of this year as the coordinating council is still lobbying at the Ministry of Highways.

“We have been working with the Ghana Highway Authority to assess it for us. So we got the Ghana Highway regional director to come over and assess it and so far we are at the ministry getting pushing to get the contractor to take it over.

“So I believe that by the end of the year, we should have a contractor come on the road,” he stated.

Address food suppliers’ concerns – Govt communicator to officials

Ellen Ama Daaku from the government’s communications team has urged officials to address the concerns of food suppliers demanding payment of their arrears.

In an interview with the media, she emphasized that it is unfair for officials to ignore the suppliers, who have spent nights at the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) office, without addressing their grievance.

“Speak to them,” she said after indicating that information is key.

She highlighted that there was a previous claim stating that the Ministry of Education had not released funds to the Buffer Stock Company. However, the Ministry later clarified that the money had indeed been disbursed.

“If the money has been given, how did you share it? Buffer Stock must explain,” she added.

“Speak to the suppliers and pay them,” she stressed.

According to their spokesperson, Koku Amedume, this situation is causing immense pressure on them as they had borrowed loans from banks to fulfill the supply requirements of the Buffer Stock.

During an interview with the media, Amedume revealed that the suppliers, who staged an overnight demonstration at NAFCO premises, find it more comfortable to sleep there than in their own homes due to the mounting pressure.

He expressed their concerns about the accumulating interest on the loans they had taken due to the nonpayment by NAFCO.

“The pressure on us at home is massive. Most of these people go to contract loans from banks with huge interests with the sole aim of supporting their business and engaging in this supply business.

“Buffer stock had taken supplies from them for two years, for two years we have not been paid,” he said.

“I truly don’t understand what the problem is, we have been told that even with the IMF programme critical sectors like education and health and indeed social intervention programmes are protected, so if that is the case why has the government failed to release money so that the Buffer Stock Food suppliers will be paid?

“From what I know, the amount owed them is not even in excess of GHS300 million. So what has the government been doing with the money that Parliament has been approving year in and year out to finance the Free SHS policy?

“The President ought to step up to the plate and do the needful so that we don’t have schools closed down by the end of this week if nothing is done. If nothing is done by the end of this week, mark my words, schools will be closed down because the suppliers are no longer in a position to supply food,” Dr Apaak said on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Tuesday, July 4.

Schools will remain opened despite food supply challenges – Govt communicator

Ellen Ama Daaku from the Government Communications team has stated that schools will remain opened despite the food supplier issues.

The suppliers have been protesting at the National Food Buffer Stock Company due to unpaid arrears.

“I do not think the schools are going to shut down,” she said on the Big Issue on TV3 Thursday, July 6 after recounting that a claim was made earlier that the Ministry of Finance had not released money to the Buffer Stock Company but the Ministry came out to say the money had been released.

“If the money has been given, how did you share it? Buffer Stock must explain,” she added.

“Speak to the suppliers and pay them,” she stressed.

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, expressed concerns that schools might close down if the Food Suppliers involved in the Free Senior High School Programme do not receive their arrears by the end of the week. He emphasized that failure to settle the arrears would result in the suppliers being unable to continue providing food to the schools.

As a ranking member of the parliamentary select committee on Education, Dr. Apaak urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take immediate action in ensuring that the owed arrears to the suppliers are promptly paid, enabling them to sustain their business operations.

“I truly don’t understand what the problem is, we have been told that even with the IMF programme critical sectors like education and health and indeed social intervention programmes are protected, so if that is the case why has the government failed to release money so that the Buffer Stock Food suppliers will be paid?

Declare your stance on LGBTQ – COMOG to MPs

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations Ghana (COMOG) is urging Members of Parliament to courageously express their position regarding the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.

COMOG, a religious union, acknowledges that certain MPs are associated with the activities of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, although this was not evident during the parliamentary debate on Wednesday.

In a conversation with journalists following the bill’s debate, Abdel Manan Abdel Rahman, the President of COMOG, emphasizes that lawmakers should utilize all possible methods to distance themselves from such practices.

“We are offering the opportunity to people who are perceived to be working for the LGBTQ+ community to clean themselves by using this platform. But we still think that individual MPs should take the opportunity and clean themselves and state their positions. People know that they are actors, operators and promoters of LGBTQ community, but that is not what we saw, but some how there’s a later sign we saw during the debate,” he entreated.

He further suggested that reducing unnecessary government expenditure could assist in addressing any financial challenges that may arise in connection with the bill.

“We think that there’s nothing wrong with it, it will not bring any financial burden on the state. If our politicians will reduce the expenditure and financial burden they put on the state by reducing the V-8 they use, of course, we will have enough money to take care of people who want to move away from LGBTQ+ activities so that they can be taken care of,” Mr. Rahman emphasized.

I chose acting although I was a good business student – Lawyer Nti

Richmond Xavier Amoakoh, famously known as Lawyer Nti, has stated that he discovered his passion for acting during his senior high school (SHS) years.

He gained popularity through his portrayal of the character in the well-known TV series Kejetia vs Makola, which humorously depicts Ghana’s legal and judicial system.

“The first time I saw my colleagues act on stage was when I was in senior secondary school,” he said, adding: “The feeling I got, I just knew this is for me.”

He noted that he was “a very good Business student,” at the time, but he went to see his assistant headmaster and informed him that he believed acting “was what I think I should be doing”.

“I should be acting, I should be focusing on acting and directing so that’s what I want to pursue,” he remembered telling the school official.

According to Richmond Xavier Amoakoh, the assistant headmaster at his senior high school (SHS) informed him about his options if he wanted to pursue acting as a career. He was told that he could choose between the University of Media, Arts and Communication’s (UniMAC) National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) and the University of Ghana’s (UG) School of Performing Arts.

Amoakoh expressed a preference for UG, Legon, over NAFTI because he was unfamiliar with the latter. Additionally, he believed that UG was prestigious and a school that his mother would approve of, despite knowing that changing his course of study would lead to controversial conversations at home.

Before taking his official “form-three examinations” in SHS, Amoakoh decided to write the popular November-December (Nov-Dec) remedial examination. Although he achieved excellent results, he chose not to immediately pursue university education.

“My first [real] acting was in the School of Performing Arts,” he mentioned, noting he was “raw” unlike his mates who had prior experience in acting.

According to Richmond Xavier Amoakoh, he approached his acting journey with the mindset of being open to learning and being molded. He expressed the attitude of “I’ve come, train me, shape me,” and he acknowledged that the school he attended fulfilled that role.

When Nana Kwesi Asare asked Lawyer Nti about which of his parents he believes he inherited his acting talent from, Amoakoh’s response is not mentioned in the given context.

“I think it’s God,” he answered.

“Well, my mother too has some talent,” he added, explaining: “She can mimic people so well.”

According to Richmond Xavier Amoakoh, he believes that his mother has a talent for doing impressions of others, particularly imitating their voices.

Twi telenovelas have collapsed Ghanaian movie industry – Mr Beautiful

A popular Kumawood actor and comedian, Mr. Beautiful, has raised concerns about the negative effects of foreign soap operas, twi telenovelas, on Ghanaian movie industry.

He believes that the widespread airing of foreign shows, especially those featuring local dialects, has contributed to the decline of the film sector.

During an interview with Amansan Krakye, Mr. Beautiful expressed his disappointment with the absence of proper regulations governing the operations of TV stations.

He emphasized the need for stricter guidelines to protect and promote the local movie industry, which has been adversely affected by the dominance of foreign content on television.

He stated, “A lot of licenses have been granted to TV station operators without any appropriate regulations, resulting in us making movies but not reaping any profits from them.”

Mr. Beautiful emphasized the practice of TV stations acquiring foreign soap operas, specifically those from Mexico, and incorporating local dialect translations to attract viewers.

He expressed his concern that this trend has had a negative impact on the Ghanaian film industry.

According to him, the popularity of these foreign soap operas has led to a decline in the local movie industry as viewership and support for Ghanaian films has diminished.

The presence of foreign content with localized translations has shifted audience attention away from locally produced movies, posing a significant challenge for the growth and sustainability of the Ghanaian film industry.

“You can be sitting in your room watching a foreign national speaking our local dialect, and these occurrences have contributed to the collapse of our local movie industry,” he added.

Mr. Beautiful further highlighted that in other countries, there are regulations in place to restrict the broadcast of foreign content and promote the growth of domestic production.

He emphasized the need for government intervention to prevent the Ghanaian movie industry from facing a complete standstill.

He suggested that the government should implement policies and regulations that prioritize local content, encourage the production of Ghanaian movies, and provide support and incentives to the industry.

Such measures, according to Mr. Beautiful, are essential to safeguard the local film sector and allow it to flourish once again.

Abusing sleeping pills pose serious risks – Pharmacist

The Head of Pharmacy at Pleasant Medical Centre in Ashaiman, Middle East, Stephen Ohene Sabi, has cautioned the public about the misuse of sleeping pills.

He highlighted that one of the main concerns with sleeping medications is their frequent usage.

Sleeping drugs are central nervous system depressants that slow down brain activity to aid in sleep.

Speaking at the weekly “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility!” program, initiated by the Ghana News Agency’s Tema Regional Office to enhance health communication and promote health literacy, Mr. Sabi emphasized the need to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with these medications.

He explained that the most common type of sleeping drug is benzodiazepines, typically taken in 10mg doses.

Some individuals may wrongly assume that taking them every night is harmless. However, dependency and tolerance can lead to unintended consequences.

Mr. Sabi cautioned that relying on these medications could result in the need for significantly higher doses to achieve sleep. He advised that the solution lies in gradually reducing the intake of such drugs.

“The body adjusts with continued use, causing a physical dependence on the medication; therefore, a reduction in dosage and skipping a day or two before taking the pills will eventually reverse the body to its default,” he suggested.

Mr. Sabi stressed the importance of reading instructions and understanding the potential side effects and reactions associated with medication before taking a responsible dose.

He highlighted the World Health Organization’s advocacy for self-care, which includes proper nutrition and responsible self-medication. Individuals are encouraged to gather information about medications before consuming them.

Mr. Sabi cautioned against the abuse of medications through overdosing, emphasizing the adverse effects they can have on patients. While some medicines may have minor side effects like constipation, headaches, or diarrhea, others can cause severe side effects that may necessitate medical intervention.

Regarding women who experience blood loss during their menstrual cycles, Mr. Sabi suggested considering blood tonic medicines or consulting a healthcare professional for appropriate advice, depending on the individual situation. He also recommended consuming healthy meals that can naturally replenish blood, in addition to or instead of taking blood tonics.

Furthermore, Mr. Sabi advised individuals with health conditions such as kidney or liver problems to refrain from taking any medications without a proper prescription from a healthcare professional.

  • Memorial Park made for tourism, not to honour Dr Nkrumah – CPP

Memorial Park made for tourism, not to honour Dr Nkrumah – CPP

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has expressed discontentment with the refurbishment of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, suggesting that it was primarily driven by economic benefits rather than genuine respect for Ghana’s first president.

The General Secretary of the CPP, Nana Yaa Jantuah, conveyed these concerns in an interview with the media.

She highlighted the party’s longstanding commitment to upholding Dr. Nkrumah’s ideals and legacy but expressed disappointment at being excluded from the planning committees and the subsequent unveiling of the renovated park.

Jantuah further alleged that President Akufo-Addo intentionally manipulated significant dates and memories associated with Dr. Nkrumah since assuming office to align them with the Busia-Dombo tradition, which the CPP finds objectionable.

She highlighted the alteration in the design of the GH¢2 note from a banknote featuring Nkrumah’s image to a coin as an example.

The CPP representative also criticized the decision to rename Nkrumah’s birthday as Founders’ Day, while designating September 21 as Nkrumah Memorial Day.

She interpreted these actions as further attempts to marginalize Ghana’s first president.

“Dr. Kwame Nkrumah emerged from a political party, namely the CPP. However, we were neither invited to contribute to the renovation committee nor consulted in any capacity for the event. We could have provided relevant materials for the Nkrumah library,” Jantuah lamented.

Nana Yaa Jantuah expressed her disappointment with the president’s emphasis on rejuvenating the Dr. Nkrumah Memorial Park without considering the political party that Dr. Nkrumah championed during his presidency.

The CPP continues to be dissatisfied with what they perceive as a lack of regard for Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy.

They believe that the renovation should have been approached in a different manner, taking into account his significant contributions and the ideals of his political party.

“Have you seen this president (Akufo-Addo) say anything good about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah? He’s always projecting his tradition [Busia-Dombo] over Dr. Kwame Nkrumah,” she added.

  • Architect shares inspiration behind Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park refurbishment

Architect shares inspiration behind Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park refurbishment

The 29-year-old architect, Bethel Kofi Mamphey, responsible for the revitalized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, has shared insights into the inspiration behind the renewed appearance and ambiance of the monument dedicated to Ghana’s first president.

He expressed that his main inspiration was to create an engaging experience for young individuals, enabling them to comprehend and appreciate the achievements of Ghana’s former President.

The park, initially designed by Dr. Don Arthur in 1991, houses the remains of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

It is situated on the former polo grounds in Accra, where Ghana’s independence was declared.

In 2022, the facility underwent closure for renovation, resulting in the integration of new elements at a cost of $3.5 million.

The refurbished Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park showcases various enhancements, including a reception hall, administrative spaces, spacious restroom facilities, a restaurant, a gift shop, and a library. These additions contribute to its appeal and overall attractiveness.

Additionally, notable features of the renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park include an audiovisual hall, a tunnel adorned with inscribed speeches of Dr. Nkrumah, and a Freedom Wall. The water fountain has also been enhanced with the incorporation of audiovisual elements, adding to the overall experience and ambiance of the park.

During an interview with Bernard Avle on the Point of View on Citi TV, the 29-year-old architect emphasized that the creation of the Freedom Wall, featuring quotes and pictures portraying the diverse emotional states of Ghana’s first President, aimed to offer park visitors an authentic understanding of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s persona.

“Most of us millennials, have heard of Nkrumah, but we didn’t see him, so coming up with the project, I wanted to create something that will allow people to experience parts of him that people have never seen– the emotional phases he went through as a President. The Freedom Wall is to give visitors a feel of Dr. Nkrumah,” he said.

Touching on some of the facilities, Mamphey said “We left the old mausoleum as it is. It is a very beautiful structure. It was made with marble stones which is an everlasting material. We just restored the dilapidated state of some of its structures including the broken concrete fence. That is where his remains are. The land is the same. The difference is that the lawns and the trees have been well-manicured, so now you can see everything at a distance”.

Mr. Mamphey further revealed that the entire refurbishment project employed Ghanaian labor, a feat that he believes would make the former President proud as it aligns with his principles.

“Everybody on the project, from the engineers to the welders were all Ghanaians. This is fully Ghanaian. There were no ex-pats”

On Tuesday, 4th July 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially inaugurated the revitalized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The President expressed his belief that the refurbished park will draw approximately one million domestic and international tourists each year.

During the unveiling ceremony of the redeveloped memorial park, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the government is committed to ongoing investments in the tourism sector as a means to revive the economy.

  • NPP executives to receive salaries, Social Security benefits under Alan’s leadership

NPP executives to receive salaries, Social Security benefits under Alan’s leadership

Presidential aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that when voted into power, national executives of the party will receive salaries and social security benefits.

He made this announcement at the beginning of his tour of the Greater Accra Region.

In an innovative approach to internal party elections, Alan engaged with delegates from three constituencies in an open mini durbar at the Suu Astro Turf in the Ablekuma Central constituency. Delegates from Ablekuma South and North also attended the durbar. This move addresses the concern of NPP executives, members, and supporters who have felt neglected by the party and its structures while in power.

Alan Kyerematen believes it is time for the hardworking party members to reap the benefits of their dedication, which has contributed to the NPP’s success in national elections. As a result, he has pledged to provide salaries and social security for party executives.

This approach reflects Alan’s determination to run the party as a disciplined corporate entity, ensuring that members are rewarded for their efforts instead of treating party positions as thankless sacrifices.

Furthermore, the concept of a peoples’ assembly showcased the participatory governance that Ghanaians can expect under an Alan Kyerematen administration.

During the first leg of his Greater Accra tour, Alan was accompanied by party stalwarts such as former Attorney General Ayikoi Otoo, Minister of Railway and Rail Transport Peter Amewu, NPP chairpersons from the three Ablekuma constituencies, and Hopeson Adorye, among others.

  • Eight-year-old boy killed by bulldogs in Kumasi

In a tragic incident, two bulldogs attacked and killed an eight-year-old boy while he was attempting to feed them at his family’s residence in the Abrepo-Broni suburb of Kumasi.

According to an anonymous eyewitness who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the mutilated body of the boy was released for burial with the consent of the Police, who are continuing their investigation into the incident.

The witness explained that the family had brought the two bulldogs as a security measure due to past robbery incidents.

They had lived with the dogs for five years without any previous aggression. The deceased had developed a close bond with the animals as he was responsible for feeding them.

On the day of the incident, the boy’s parents were away, and he was with his siblings and grandmother at home. The grandmother heard the boy’s cry for help shortly after he went to feed the dogs.

She rushed to his rescue but was also attacked, suffering multiple bites on her arm, under her breast, ribs, and thigh. She was also stripped naked by the dogs.

The boy’s elder brother attempted to rescue him but was also bitten on the arm. In pain, he went outside and called for assistance, but neighbors were unable to approach the scene due to the aggressive nature of the dogs. The Police were subsequently called in.

The Police had to shoot and kill one of the dogs while standing on the fence wall of the house.

They later found and shot the second dog. The Police quickly transported the deceased, his injured brother, and grandmother to a hospital, but the boy was pronounced dead on arrival.

The deceased’s body was initially deposited at the hospital’s mortuary and has since been released for burial.

The grandmother and elder brother were treated and discharged from the hospital.

58% of African countries experienced corruption surge in 2022 – Afrobarometer

A survey by Afrobarometer has revealed a drastic rise in corruption across 36 African countries in 2021 and 2022.

In these countries, the report indicates a significant increase of 46% in corruption, a moderate increase of 12%, and a stagnation at approximately 20%.

According to the survey, nearly 58% of Africans state that corruption has intensified in their respective countries over the past year.

Afrobarometer emphasized the situation has notably deteriorated in 12 out of 30 countries surveyed in both 2014/2015 and 2021/2022.

The report further highlights specific countries where corruption has witnessed a sharp surge, including Senegal (leading with a 39-percentage point increase), Burkina Faso (+29 points), Gabon (+24 points), Cameroon (+23 points), and Côte d’Ivoire (+22 points).

“Almost six in 10 Africans (58%) say that corruption in their countries increased over the past year. The situation has worsened significantly in 12 of the 30 countries surveyed in both 2014/2015 and 2021/2022, most dramatically in Senegal (where perceptions of increasing corruption have risen by 39 percentage points), Burkina Faso (+29 points), Gabon (+24 points), Cameroon (+23 points), and Côte d’Ivoire (+22 points).

In contrast, Afrobarometer’s report highlights a remarkable improvement in Benin, where the proportion of respondents reporting an increase in corruption dropped significantly by -61 percentage points.

Additionally, Afrobarometer notes that while a majority of Africans acknowledge the increase in corruption within their countries, there is a prevailing fear among individuals to report such cases to authorities.

“A majority of Africans say that corruption has increased in their countries, but an even larger
proportion fear retaliation should they report corrupt acts to the authorities,” Afrobarometer hinted in its report.

Maame Akua Amoah Twum, Afrobarometer’s communications coordinator for anglophone West and North Africa, revealed these findings during a corruption webinar hosted by the Data for Governance Alliance in partnership with the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption.

The webinar’s theme was “Civil society organizations’ Contribution to driving accountability in the Fight against Corruption in Africa.”

This event served as a prelude to the 20th anniversary celebration of the adoption of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC), scheduled to take place on 11th July 2023 in Arusha, Tanzania.

Alban Bagbin encouraged those who oppose the bill to articulate their positions and put forward any suggestions they may have during the session.

“Any member who disagrees with the submission just made by Andy Appiah Kubi that all the 275 are in support of the bill, anybody who is not in support, be on your feet and I will recognise you.”

Nominations for NPP primaries in orphan constituencies to be opened on July 11

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that nominations for parliamentary primaries in constituencies where the party has no parliamentary representation, known as orphan constituencies, will commence on July 11, 2023.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, released a statement in Accra on Wednesday, confirming that this decision was endorsed during the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meetings on April 3, 2023.

According to Mr. Frimpong, the nomination period will conclude on August 10, 2023, with the elections scheduled to take place between September 23, 2023, and December 2, 2023, spanning several Saturdays.

“Nomination forms could be obtained at a non-refundable application fee of GH¢3,000.00 in a bankers draft payable to the NPP national headquarters in Accra,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong also stated that if an aspiring parliamentary candidate is unable to obtain the nomination form at the constituency level, they have the option to obtain it through alternative means.

They can appeal to the regional or national secretariat to acquire the form or download it from the Party’s website, www.newpatrioticparty.org, upon payment of a fee. This provision ensures that candidates have access to the nomination forms regardless of any difficulties faced at the constituency level.

“To successfully file a nomination, an aspiring parliamentary candidate must submit a non-refundable filing fee of GHS35,000 in a bankers draft payable to the NPP national headquarters in Accra,” he added.

The NPP General Secretary added that aspirant parliamentary candidates will receive a 50% rebate of the filing fees in order to encourage greater representation of women, young people, and people with disabilities (PWDs) in higher political offices.

“This means they will be required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHS17,500.00,” he added.

Mr Frimpong stressed that the party’s leadership will not deny any parliamentary candidate access to purchase the nomination forms.

  • Nkrumah Memorial Park a place for all – Acting Director

Nkrumah Memorial Park a place for all – Acting Director

The acting director of the recently renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Edward Quao, has praised the establishment as unique with a range of items for tourists to enjoy visiting.

He listed the many features the building can brag of, including a freedom hall, a picnic place for families, and an amphitheater for public events.

An array of Ghanaians applauded the $3.5 million makeover, which they saw as a suitable tribute to the country’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Given that the new structure appears larger, some onlookers believe that the park has been extended.

“We also have a freedom hall where we have images of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in a decent mood when he was smiling, a musical fountain-the first of its kind in Ghana, whereby each chime is structured into the system, a flow of the fountain, according to the rhythm being played. We also have a new well-made picnic area for our guests. It’s a new place, very exciting”.

He said that during the two years of rehabilitation, no new land parcel was developed.

“We didn’t expand the place, it’s the same area we had. We didn’t encroach on any land. What we had was what we improved on. It’s the same old land we had the new facility you have now. Nothing in terms of space has changed”.

Edward Quao discussed several initiatives put in place to increase park visitors.

“With local market, our target mostly is the schools, so we have a team that is going to work around the schools to promote the Park. And also use our social media handles a lot because we have a lot of youth who go on social media. And online ticketing was established for our foreigners.”

“And we will collaborate more with event organizers. We have an additional gallery where you can watch his videos and listen to his audio, and his famous and favourite quotes. Pictures can also be taken at the rooftop of the Park,” Edward Quao, the Acting Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park explained.

International treaty will not be violated by Anti-LGBTQ bill – Ahiafor

The Member of Parliament (MP) representing Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, has affirmed that the enactment of the bill concerning the promotion of appropriate sexual human rights and Ghanaian Family Values, anti-LGBTQ bill, will not infringe upon any international treaty.

The Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, in its report on the bill, expressed concerns about potential violations of international treaties such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civic and Political Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, among others.

However, during the parliamentary deliberations on the bill, Bernard Ahiafor, as the Ranking Member on the Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, rejected these assertions.

He disputed any claims that the bill, if passed, would contravene international treaties.

“The bill under reference if passed into law will not violate article 108 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana,” Mr Ahiafor said, adding if this bill is passed into law there is no provision in any international treaty or convention that will be violated.”

The proposed bill aims to prohibit LGBTQ+ activities and related actions, including the prohibition of the dissemination, endorsement, or advocacy of LGBT and related activities. Additionally, it seeks to establish safeguards and assistance for children, as well as individuals who are victims or accused of engaging in LGBT and related activities.

In an interview, the Member of Parliament representing Ho West and one of the bill’s proponents, Emmanuel Bedzrah expressed optimism that lawmakers from both sides of the house would rally behind the bill and provide their support.

“We have agreed with the Speaker, Alban Bagbin and leaders of the house, that the second reading of the bill will be taken today. It is our expectation that after today the consideration will also follow as well. And so we are very optimistic that we will have the reading, which is long overdue.”

“The committee has agreed by consensus that this bill should be passed. And so there will not be any struggle at all. I would have loved that those who are against it should be bold enough and tell Ghanaians, but you will be surprised that everybody will support this bill today,” Member of Parliament for Ho West expressed hope.

The level of communication between Jackie and his real daughter, Etta, remains ambiguous and uncertain. While the viral clip portrays a profound display of emotion, some have questioned the authenticity of the tears shed by Jackie, considering his past candid interviews spanning more than a decade. T

hese interviews have given rise to speculation about the genuineness of his emotions in the scene.

Etta’s complex family dynamic further adds to the intricacies surrounding their relationship. However, this does not necessarily mean that inferior materials were used. We need to conduct further investigations to determine if this is indeed the case, and to find out if the engineer is qualified and has followed the proper procedures for constructing the building. These factors will need to be considered in order to determine whether shoddy work was done or whether the right thing was done,” the Municipal Fire Commander in Kasoa said.

Eight including a Senior High School (SHS) student, have sustained injuries after two buses collided on the Kasoa-Malam highway on Wednesday morning, July 5.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the sprinter bus (with registration number GR 6669-13) lost control of the steering wheel when another vehicle merged into the lane, leading to the bus spinning and crashing.

Passersby came to the aid of the injured passengers and rescued them from the accident site. They were swiftly transported to nearby healthcare facilities for immediate medical attention.

  • ECG’s GHS3.1 billion retrieved during its operation remains a mystery – ACEP

ECG’s GHS3.1 billion retrieved during its operation remains a mystery – ACEP

The African Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), an energy think tank, has raised concerns in its July 2023 publication.

It questions the transparency of the GHS 3.1 billion collected by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

ACEP cited the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) reports to challenge ECG’s financial management accountability.

ECG reported GHS 1.1 billion in total revenue between March and April, averaging GHS 550 million per month.

However, this amount represents only about 35% of the claimed GHS 3.1 billion.

ACEP’s report also reveals that over 50% of the reported revenue, around GHS 540 million, was spent at ECG’s discretion.

Additionally, the remaining GHS 1.1 billion accounts for only about 11% of the revenue requirement for the sector under the CWM during March and April 2023.

Regarding the usage of GHS 540 million for liquid fuel procurement, ECG claims it was necessary due to gas supply shortfalls but refuses to pay the gas suppliers through GNPC.

Consequently, this non-payment leads to repercussions such as reduced reverse flow gas volumes by WAPCO and curtailed gas supply from July 1, 2023, due to outstanding payments.

ACEP’s report also sheds light on the outstanding gas supply payments from the Sankofa Gye Nyame (SGN) field, which amount to nearly $600 million. The report indicates arrears of about $380 million for LC drawdowns and additional invoices of around $207 million.

ACEP questions ECG’s priorities, especially when the government has already paid over $1 billion for gas consumed by the power sector since 2018.

“The government has already paid more than $1 billion for gas consumed by the power sector since 2018, though captured in the tariff. Thus, for ECG to ignore all the realities and pay for liquid fuel while undermining gas supply, it is not difficult to conclude that the company does not care about the fiscal damage it causes to the public.”

ACEP’s report highlights a striking disparity in ECG’s revenue allocation based on the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM). As per the CWM formula, ECG should have received approximately GHS 113.5 million, accounting for 26.37% of the reported revenue of around GHS 430 million during March and April.

However, ECG allocated around GHS 256 million to itself, deviating significantly from the prescribed allocation formula. ACEP’s report emphasizes this discrepancy, stating, “ECG disproportionately assigned a significant portion of its revenue under the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) to itself while substantially underpaying other entities within the value chain.”

The report also reveals a stark contrast in payment percentages between ECG and other entities involved in the value chain. While ECG disbursed approximately 78.4% of its billed invoices for March and April, it only paid between 3.1% and 12.4% of the invoices billed by other entities.

ACEP’s report states, “The GHS 256 million ECG encumbered is about 78.4% of its billed invoices for March and April. On the contrary, ECG paid between 3.1% and 12.4% of the invoices billed by other entities within the value chain.”

ACEP’s conclusion asserts that ECG’s actions not only disrupt the equilibrium of the energy sector but also jeopardize the financial stability of the country.

The report strongly emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive investigation into ECG’s financial practices and the whereabouts of the GHS 3.1 billion collected.

ACEP urgently calls upon the government to take immediate action in order to restore trust and confidence in the energy sector.

The report underscores the significance of transparent revenue collection, effective financial governance, and stringent accountability measures to guarantee a sustainable and dependable power supply for Ghana.

I am into music to shame my critics – Eno Barony

Ghanaian rapper, Eno Barony has recently revealed that her journey in music was initially motivated by fun but later fueled by a strong desire to prove herself and defy the constraints imposed by others.

In an interview with the media, shared her realization of being hindered by others’ preconceived notions, ultimately embracing her individuality and transcending societal expectations.

“In the beginning, I was just like the fun of it and later, I wanted to prove a point to myself. I always felt like there are some things that I cannot do because people were like ‘Oh She’s an Ashaiman girl’, ‘Kumasi Girl’ or ‘She’s too fat’. It was bringing me down at a point So I had to prove to myself that I can do this,” she recounted.

Eno, whose real name is Ruth Eno Adjoa Amankwah Nyame Adom, was born in Tema, a city located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Throughout her life, Eno has experienced the habit of being labeled and categorized by others.

“I’ve always been odd. Back in school, they referred to me as ‘That Ashaiman Girl’, I went to tertiary in Kumasi and it was always ‘That Tema Girl’. I come and started doing rap, people are like oh ‘She’s a Kumasi Girl’,” she pointed out.

Eno Barony disclosed that one of the most painful labels she faced was being called “fat.” These derogatory remarks had a profound impact on her self-esteem. However, she made a conscious decision not to allow them to shape her identity or determine her journey.

“It got me especially when they called me ‘fat’ You are human so it can get to you at some point and I was like nah, I am bigger than my problem,” she continued.

Acknowledging her inherent value, she made a deliberate choice to transcend the negativity.

By doing so, she not only empowered herself but also became a source of inspiration for numerous individuals grappling with comparable body image concerns.

“I dropped all the negativity and people who were more plus size than I am will come to me and say ‘Oh you’re my icon’. I did not know I had an audience then. I have videos people sending to me crying and saying you make me feel that I’m beautiful,” she narrated.

Schools to shutdown this week if debts owed food suppliers are not paid – Apaak

Schools at risk of closure if Free Senior High School Program’s food suppliers go unpaid by end of the week, according to Builsa South MP, Dr Clement Apaak.

He emphasized that the suppliers’ inability to continue food provision without payment.

Dr Apaak, a member of the parliamentary select committee on Education, has urged President Akufo-Addo to prioritize settling the owed arrears for the suppliers’ business sustainability.

Food Suppliers, currently staging a protest at the NAFCO premises, claim that they are owed two years’ worth of arrears.

The National Food Suppliers Association spokesperson, Koku Amedume, expressed their predicament, explaining that the unpaid arrears have caused immense pressure as they had taken loans from banks to fulfill their obligations to the Buffer Stock.

During an appearance on the Ghana Tonight Show with Alfred Ocansey on TV3, Amedume revealed that the suppliers, who even spent the night at NAFCO, find more comfort staying on the premises rather than returning to their homes due to the mounting pressure.

Furthermore, they are deeply concerned about the accumulating interest on the loans, resulting from NAFCO’s failure to make payments.

“The pressure on us at home is massive. Most of these people go to contract loans from banks with huge interests with the sole aim of supporting their business and engaging in this supply business.“Buffer stock had taken supplies from them for two years, for two years we have not been paid,” he said.

  • I once felt like the odd one – Teenage European Games champion, Desharne Bent-Ashmeil

I once felt like the odd one – Teenage European Games champion, Desharne Bent-Ashmeil

Teenage European Games champion, Desharne Bent-Ashmeil aims to become the first black diver to represent Great Britain at the Olympics.

Desharne Bent-Ashmeil, is determined to rewrite history and break the unwanted statistic by becoming the first black diver to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I used to feel like the odd one out as there weren’t any other black divers,” she tells BBC Sport.

“Now I feel it’s OK to be different, because you should feel unique and special, but I also want more people to feel like this is a sport for them.”

‘I wanted to dive, but I didn’t know how to swim!’

Hailing from Crystal Palace in south London, Bent-Ashmeil’s early aspirations were centered around gymnastics.

However, a chance encounter with a different sport completely transformed her life, leading her down a path that would ultimately become her passion and obsession.

“I’ve always dreamed of going to the Olympics, but I used to do gymnastics and had never even heard of diving,” says the 18-year-old.

“I was maybe 11 and was at the National Sports Centre watching my niece do gymnastics when I saw people diving for the first time.

“The pool was just opposite us and I thought it was amazing, so I told my mum I wanted to try it because of how much I loved sports.”

Bent-Ashmeil chuckles as she reminisces about that moment, sharing, “My mum was skeptical, saying, ‘Are you sure? You can’t swim.’ So, I quickly enrolled in swimming lessons.”

In just six months, she underwent an intensive “crash course” that equipped her with the necessary swimming skills to reach the edge of the pool after executing a dive.

With her newfound abilities, she was granted permission to train and compete in the sport she had grown passionate about.

    ‘Chlorine would damage my hair’

While pursuing gymnastics, Bent-Ashmeil held great admiration for world champion Beth Tweddle and even had the opportunity to attend training sessions with the Olympic bronze medallist. However, she found it challenging to find role models who shared her background and experiences.

The situation was not much different when she transitioned to diving.

However, witnessing Canadian Olympic medallist Jennifer Abel compete in prominent televised events provided Bent-Ashmeil with a glimmer of hope.

Seeing someone like Abel excel in the sport gave her inspiration and reinforced her belief that she too could make a significant impact in diving.

It was similar in diving, though seeing Canadian Olympic medallist Jennifer Abel competing in major televised events gave her hope.

“I always saw Jennifer and was like ‘oh my gosh, there’s a black diver on the world stage’ and I wanted to be like her,” she says.

“It was nice to have a role model because I did feel different around the pool when [other divers] would have conversations about their hair and I didn’t have that type.

“When I was younger, I just used to ‘relax my hair’, which is not great for it, and then mixing it with chlorine is quite damaging, so it would break off a lot.

“I’ve learned to always crease it now and put products on straight after training so that it doesn’t become weak.

“It’s little tips like that which I didn’t have, which I’d like to be able to share with other people.”

Our national teams need much attention – Great Olympics PRO

Accra Great Olympics’ Communications Director, Emmanuel Saint Osei, has raised serious concerns about Ghana’s national teams following the Black Meteors’ elimination from the 2023 U23 AFCON.

The team’s failure to advance in the tournament, with a disappointing draw against Guinea and a crushing defeat to Morocco, has dashed hopes of Ghanaian fans for Olympic participation in 2024.

“We always create the impression that all is well with our national teams, but all is not well,” he told Citi Sports.

“What i have studied in the past is that, we do not pay attention to details, including our coaches when it comes to tournaments.

“When we won our first match against Congo, for me it wasn’t the time for our Coaches to go and sleep, because Congo was a tough side, in fact all the teams we faced are better sides.

“So I was expecting that till the last whistle is blown, then we will have the opportunity to celebrate and do something else.

“Now every nation is playing football, not like in the past where we were running past nations with ease, so i think it is about time our technical handlers give details to football and ensure that every department of the game has the necessary attention applied.

“Look at the goals we conceded against Morocco, it is not something that should have happened.”

I am not in a haste to feature in movies because I prioritize movie roles – Ex-BBA star Tayo Faniran

A reality star and actor, Tayo Faniran has outlined specific conditions under which he would consider accepting an acting role.

During a recent interview on Hip TV, the Big Brother Africa runner-up expressed his interest in particular roles depicted in movie scripts.

Faniran emphasized that the nature of his character in a film is the crucial factor he considers.

He said, “First thing I look out for when I’m giving a script is my positioning in the story. I think I’m a leading man.

“I have all it takes to be a lead actor. And apart from that, I just love to be the best in what I do. I’m looking for a character that is going to showcase my potential. And in most cases, it’s always the lead character or the supporting lead character.

“The second thing I look out for is that I don’t want to be stereotyped. I don’t like maybe every script that comes, play boy or lover boy, or bad guy or something like that. I like to look for diversity; something that will give me the leverage to show my flexibility.

“And then I look out for the people producing the film as well. The class of the film. Is it going to go out? Are people going to see it? Is it going to add something to my career? Then I consider the money. Is the money worth my time? I’m a businessman, I’ve other things to do. So, I just weigh it down. Even if it’s not about the money, it should be worth my time.”

Tayo Faniran, known for his appearance in Amazon Prime Video’s African original series ‘Gangs Of Lagos,’ made a remarkable debut in the blockbuster.

Released in April, Faniran portrayed the character of Ninalowo, also known as Nino, a notorious yet compassionate gang leader in Isale Eko.

I dreamt God has given me the approval to die – Oboy Siki

Kumawood actor, Oboy Siki has restated his claim that he has made an agreement with God to pass away in 2024.

Oboy Siki asserts that he made this decision because he believes the movie industry holds no further prospects for him, and he desires to prevent anyone from taking credit or attributing his demise to external influences.

Hence, he has chosen to openly discuss this arrangement.

During a recent interview with the media, Oboy Siki shared his thoughts. He mentioned that after expressing dissatisfaction with the movie industry, he witnessed the struggles faced by fellow actors who struggled to sustain themselves in the field.

This realization prompted him to approach God and establish an agreement that when he reaches a certain age, he would pass away.

“When I started speaking ill about the movie industry, I can mention about 20 people’s names who couldn’t make a living in the movie industry. So, I asked God that He should grant me this age to die. I had a dream that God agreed for me to die. So, the thought of death has been hanging around my neck.

“If I am not careful and I die, the pastors and Ghanaians will take the credit for it and accuse me of being cursed or murdered. However, that is not true. It is only God who has the power to take a life.

“I didn’t want them to take the spotlight, which is why I mentioned it, but I am not receiving the response I hoped for.”That’s why I feel I have to die. If I make it to 2024, I will make arrangements for those who will take care of the funeral and other necessary arrangements. So, I will organize everything that needs to be taken care of before I pass away.”

Security of ‘illegal’ Chinese miners allegedly shoots man to death

Alleged shooting by Chinese illegal miners has resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man in Hiawa, Western Region.

The incident has led to protests among the local youth. According to reports, the victim was shot after being found on the premises of the Chinese miners in the early hours of Thursday, June 29.

While the purpose of his presence remains unclear, it is speculated that he intended to steal black sand containing raw gold from the miners.

“They fired multiple shots at him. They first shot his leg, he was not dead and started begging for mercy but they went ahead to shoot his head, back and chest. He was quickly rushed to the clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival,” a resident in the community narrated.

After committing the crime, the suspect fled the community. In response to the shooting incident, enraged youth took to the streets, protesting the death of the young man.

They targeted the residences of Chinese illegal miners in the community, seeking answers regarding their colleague’s death.

Reports suggest that properties belonging to the Chinese nationals were damaged during the protests. One protester expressed discontent, stating that the police are pursuing the protesters while protecting the Chinese miners who continue their operations.

The protesters allege that no efforts have been made by the district police to apprehend the security officer responsible for the shooting, instead leading to the arrest of some of the protesters.

“We were only protesting the death of our friend. We needed answers on why he was shot when he had not stolen anything as they claim. The police have instead been arresting the protesters. Some of our colleagues have been arrested and the police are on manhunt for the rest of us. So most of us are fleeing the community as I speak because we are afraid they will come after us. The Chinese illegal miners are still working with their macho men whilst we are fleeing,” one of the protesters, Nana Amoa, indicated.

Residents of the community have reported enduring years of torment due to the actions of Chinese illegal miners and their enforcers.

“The macho men have been parading the community with pump action guns without any fear. They have been protecting the Chinese illegal miners all day and night. They hold the pump action guns on the streets every day and nobody dare say anything to them,” another resident, Kwaku Takyi, indicated.

The assembly member of the community, Ebenezer Obimpeh, has said that the situation is now under control.

He confirmed that community members who were arrested during the protests have been released on bail after appearing in court.

Attempts to reach Mr. Patrick H. Amponteng, the Amenfi Central District Chief Executive, have been unsuccessful as calls and text messages to his mobile phone have gone unanswered.
