New Lands Commission office will boost economic development – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has highlighted the critical role of a well-functioning land administration system in the country’s development.

He stressed that efficient land management is essential for fostering economic growth, social unity, and attracting investment.

During the inauguration of the new Lands Commission Head Office in Accra on Monday, November 25, Dr. Bawumia addressed the challenges the facility aims to overcome, such as the dependence on manual record-keeping, the movement of files between offices, and overcrowded spaces.

Reaffirming his dedication to strengthening the land administration system, Dr. Bawumia outlined three core areas of focus: modern infrastructure, digitalization, and automation of processes.

He noted that the new building demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving land management, ensuring a more efficient, transparent, and customer-oriented system.

“The Commission is heavily dependent on manual records, the movement of files across offices, some of which you have to cross the road to the other side. I remember saying we cannot move forward if we do not tackle these challenges. In my encounter with the media, I expressed the government’s commitment to see to the completion of the new head office complex of the Lands Commission.

“As part of the measures to deal with the challenges the Commission was facing, I’m happy that we have delivered on this promise…That’s why building a robust land administration must be a priority for all. In the last 8 years, the government has been working to build a robust land administration anchored on three pillars-modern office infrastructure, digitalisation, and automation of business processes.

“The completion of this new head office building which is equipped with a state-of-the-art facility is geared towards the first pillar of a robust land administration and demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for effective land management.

“This modern facility is not just a structure, it represents a significant step in our collective mission to build a more efficient, transparent and customer-centred land administration system in Ghana.”

  • My deportation process was traumatic and unfair – Shalimar Abbiusi

My deportation process was traumatic and unfair – Shalimar Abbiusi

Spokesperson for the New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, has described her arrest, detention, and deportation from Ghana as a traumatic experience.

The incident began when she was accused of using forged documents to obtain a residence permit as a student at Ghana Christian University College.

Although the Ghana Immigration Service dropped the charges and granted her bail, she was later rearrested and deported on December 20, 2023.

In a statement to Joy News, Abbiusi called on the international community to hold the Ghanaian government accountable for the actions that led to her deportation.

“I think the feeling of being powerless was one of the hardest things and, of course, being deported and being in prison. The whole experience was traumatic. But I just kept believing and hoping that justice would do its work and also knowing that I have people who keep fighting for me kept me strong and hopeful.

“I wasn’t aware of how serious the situation was in Ghana and the things that I have been exposed to, the people I have seen in the cells. Even though it was a horrible experience, it was an eye-opener,” he stated.

Shalimar Abbiusi also addressed the allegations that she forged documents to remain in Ghana, denying any wrongdoing.

“I also want to enable the critical thinking of the people watching and listening. If I did forge documents, why were the charges dropped against me and where is the evidence? This is because there was no evidence produced in court about these so-called forged documents.

“I obtained my permit through an official immigration officer. So, if there were any forged documents, wasn’t it one of their own who forged them? I believe that the fact that the charges were dropped against me in court speaks volumes,” she stated.

  • I thank God for vindicating me – Shalimar Abbiusi

I thank God for vindicating me – Shalimar Abbiusi

Spokesperson for the New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi has reacted to a recent ruling instructing Ghana to compensate her with a sum of ten thousand dollars which is equivalent to one hundred and fifty, nine and fifty and eight pesewas Ghana Cedis (GHS157,953.80) for violating her rights.

Shalimar Abbiusi took to the X platform to express heartfelt gratitude to God for stepping in and granting her victory in her case against Ghana.

She wrote “I won my court case against Ghana, I am vindicated- I thank GOD”.

Ms. Abbiusi had lodged a complaint against Ghana, accusing it of infringing on her rights to liberty, fair trial, freedom of movement, equality before the law, and protection from discrimination as outlined in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Shalimar Abbiusi was initially detained on December 4, 2023, after being accused of falsifying documents to obtain a student residence permit at Ghana Christian University College.

Although she was granted bail by National Security, she was rearrested and deported on December 20, 2023, just a day after charges against her were dropped by prosecutors from the Ghana Immigration Service.

However, the ECOWAS Court has argued that her rights were violated, emphasizing that the actions taken against her were in breach of international human rights standards and protections.

Meanwhile, The New Force Movement has called on civil society organisations, human rights defenders, and the international community to join in condemning these violations and to support reforms that protect human rights in Ghana.

“We call on civil society organisations, human rights advocates, and the international community to join us in condemning these violations and supporting efforts for meaningful reform in Ghana. Together, we can foster a future where every individual’s rights are respected and protected. For further information or media inquiries, please contact our communications team at info@thenewforce.org,” it stated.

In a statement the New Force Movement reaffirmed its commitment to the fair application of laws across Africa and urged the Ghanaian government to respect human rights and the rule of law, as guaranteed by the nation’s Constitution.

“The New Force is dedicated to ensuring that laws are upheld fairly across all African nations, advocating for the rights of individuals regardless of their background. We urge the Ghanaian government to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law, as guaranteed by our Constitution. The actions against Ms. Abbiusi exemplify a broader issue of political persecution that threatens the foundations of democracy in Ghana. As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our mission to promote transparency and accountability within governmental institutions for the benefit of all.”

According to the statement, the legal representatives for Abbiusi, Francis-Xavier Sosu and Belinda Narkey Quaynor, have expressed their satisfaction with the ruling.

The statement added that lawyer Sosu particularly praised the court’s decision, which he believes upheld his client’s rights adding that he “feels vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has protected the rights of Shalimar.”

  • 40 health facilities nationwide to offer free dialysis from Dec 1 – NHIA CEO

40 health facilities nationwide to offer free dialysis from Dec 1 – NHIA CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has announced that, starting December 1, 2024, forty health facilities across the country will offer free dialysis services to patients.

The NHIA recently added dialysis treatment to its benefits package, aiming to provide financial relief to Ghanaians who struggle with the high cost of dialysis.

Currently, dialysis costs between GHC300 and GHC1,000, and it is estimated that between 4 million and 5.2 million people in Ghana have some level of renal function impairment.

Dr. Aboagye confirmed that patients can access the dialysis services at 40 selected facilities, including both public and private hospitals.

On November 26, the NHIA will meet with facility managers to discuss how the service will be implemented effectively.

“We have currently listed about 40 of these centres that our patients would have to go to,” he said.

In a Monday interview on Joy News’ AM Show, Dr. Aboagye reassured the public that the programme is financially sustainable, as the NHIA has sufficient funds to cover the cost.

He further emphasized that regardless of any change in government, the free dialysis service will remain in place, as it is a constitutional part of the NHIA’s benefits package.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is running for president, has reiterated the government’s commitment to offering free dialysis treatment, aligning with his earlier pledge that the NHIA programme will begin on December 1. This initiative, according to Dr. Bawumia, demonstrates the government’s dedication to improving the health of Ghanaians dealing with renal diseases.

Earlier this year, a pilot scheme for free dialysis was launched for patients under 18 and over 60. In addition, John Mahama, the NDC’s candidate for re-election, has promised to establish modern dialysis centres in regions where they are currently unavailable, which would help decentralize treatment and increase access.

Currently, around 2,000 individuals in Ghana are undergoing dialysis, but many delay seeking medical treatment until their condition worsens, often turning to alternative methods first. This delay significantly impacts their health and life expectancy.

  • Ghana’s energy crisis worsens as IPPs reduce power output due to debt

Ghana’s energy crisis worsens as IPPs reduce power output due to debt

Beginning today Monday, November 25, 2024, Ghana’s energy sector is set to experience significant disruptions as key energy suppliers Karpowership Energy, AKSA Energy, and Cenit Energy Limited begin to reduce their power output.

This development has raised concerns about the potential for widespread blackouts, particularly with the holiday season approaching, a time when businesses and households depend heavily on a reliable electricity supply.

Per reports both Amandi Energy and Karpowership have completely disconnected from the national grid.

Additionally, AKSA Energy has slashed its supply from 370MW to just 58MW.

The resulting shortfall is estimated at approximately 450MW, heightening fears of a power crisis.

Adding to the challenges, two Independent Power Producers (IPPs) Sunon Asogli and Amandi Energy have ceased operations.

Sunon Asogli’s shutdown is attributed to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) failure to pay off outstanding debts.

Amandi Energy, on the other hand, claims that its halt in operations is due to ongoing maintenance with no fixed end date.

CEO of the Chamber of Independent Power Producers, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, warned last week that three more power plants are at risk of shutting down unless the government addresses the debt situation.

The ongoing financial deadlock is exacerbating the power crisis, leading to frequent blackouts, commonly known as “dumsor,” which are impacting economic activities across the country.

To address this, ECG has reportedly stepped up efforts to tackle the debt crisis by moving from a monthly to a weekly payment cycle in order to pay off arrears with power producers such as Sunon Asogli.

With the festive season fast approaching, stakeholders are watching closely to see if these measures will restore stability to the power supply and prevent a more severe energy crisis.

Ghana to pay Shalimar Abbiusi $10K for rights violations – ECOWAS court rules

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court has directed the Government of Ghana to compensate the spokesperson for the New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi, following an unlawful arrest and deportation.

A sum of ten thousand dollars (USD10,000) which is equivalent to one hundred and fifty, nine and fifty and eight pesewas Ghana Cedis (GHS157,953.80) is expected to be paid to Shalimar Abbiusi.

The ECOWAS Court argues that her rights were violated, emphasizing that the actions taken against her were in breach of international human rights standards and protections.

Shalimar Abbiusi was initially detained on December 4, 2023, after being accused of falsifying documents to obtain a student residence permit at Ghana Christian University College.

  • Govt is exploiting Bawku conflict for political gain – Martin Amidu

Govt is exploiting Bawku conflict for political gain – Martin Amidu

The former Attorney General and Special Prosecutor, Martin Alamisi Amidu, has accused the government of exploiting the ongoing Bawku conflict for electoral advantage as the December 2024 elections approach.

In a detailed article, he said, “The resurgence of the Bawku intractable fratricidal conflict in October 2024 as an instrument of partisan political election engineering to influence the electorate is the clearest example of the politicisation of intractable conflicts by incumbent governments any time elections are knocking at the door in Ghana.”

Amidu also criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s management of the crisis during President Akufo-Addo’s absence, labeling the government’s response as lacking transparency and accountability.

He further noted that, even after the President’s return, the government has continued to remain “an eerie silence” on the issue.

According to Amidu, this lack of openness has exposed the public to the risk of being misinformed.

“The citizen must be apprised directly and transparently by the government on how many compatriots are dead and maimed in the intractable conflicts throughout the country during this election season to avoid speculation and the spreading of disinformation and misinformation”.

Mr Amidu warned that “the devil finds work for the uninformed, disinformed, and misinformed.”

He further alleged that the conflict benefits partisan interests, stating, “The resurgence of the October 2024 Bawku fratricidal conflict is government-generated as a result of the deliberate creation of a failure of human security for political electioneering which benefits the partisan merchants of conflict.”

The former prosecutor recalled an incident in which a suspected arms shipment into Bawku led to an intense gunfight.

Amidu stated that the ambush and ensuing gunfire worsened local tensions and further diminished trust in the security forces. He ultimately held the government responsible for fueling the conflict.

“We the People delegated our sovereign power as citizens to the incumbent government…It is, therefore, imperative that the President and his Vice-President, the anointed successor, prove themselves…by transparently accounting to We the People for how they managed our security.”

Visually impaired voters in Ashanti Region trained to use tactile jacket

In preparation for the December 7 general elections, visually impaired voters in the Ashanti Region have been trained on how to use the Tactile Jacket voting method.

Typically, all voters aim to cast their ballots privately and independently, but this has often been a challenge for those with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments. To address this, the Electoral Commission conducted a training session at the Asokore Mampong District Office over the weekend.

Isaac Obeng, a participant, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, saying it would help maintain the confidentiality of his vote on election day.

“For instance, if you want to vote for the third person, just count from the top two down. So top one, two, three and you count one, two, three. So as you see the dots are three, then you move to your right side, where you see the box.

“So after you are done locating the box, then you can print and you put your hand on the box so that you can thumbprint there.”

The Electoral Commission organizes training sessions to equip beneficiaries with the required skills before election day.

This initiative is particularly praiseworthy for visually impaired voters, as it enables them to cast their votes independently and privately.

We won’t rest until Shalimar Abbiusi gets what is rightfully hers – Francis Sosu

Spokesperson for The New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi’s legal team has pledged to enforce the ECOWAS court’s compensation order against the government.

Madam Abbiusi was deported following allegations of using forged documents to obtain a student residence permit at Ghana Christian University College.

Despite having the charges dropped and being granted bail by the Ghana Immigration Service, she was rearrested and deported on December 20, 2023.

Her lawyer, Francis-Xavier Sosu, assured that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the court’s ruling is implemented.

“We are now going to have the judgement, God willing, by Monday, and then we will trigger the processes. And indeed, it wasn’t even so much even about the compensation, but the fact that how she was dealt with, how her person was dealt with, was a violation of her right to liberty. And then also quite apart from that, the manner in which she was deported left many unanswered questions.

“She had acquired some assets around and because of the manner in which she was deported, a lot of those things do not have any closure. But we are hoping that on the back of this decision, the various legal processes could be triggered for her to get not only compensation but also retrieve some of her belongings as well as her assets which are currently in limbo because she is not around to follow them.”

Forget Mahama; Ghana deserves a leader like Bawumia – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his full trust in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, praising him as a capable and well-prepared leader ready to lead Ghana towards greater success.

The President urged the people of Ghana to unite behind Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign, emphasizing his wealth of experience and his clear vision for the country’s progress.

Speaking to professional groups in Kumasi on Sunday, November 24, Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of the Ashanti Region in securing victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He appealed to the region not to repeat the 2008 scenario, when the NPP lost power, and to fully support Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 elections.

“We have two candidates in this race: one, a failed former president, and the other, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. In Ghana’s history, four individuals have had the privilege to lead as presidents—Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Dramani Mahama, and myself. Among us, only John Mahama was denied a second term, and the reason is clear—he performed poorly,” the President remarked.

Driver arrested for attempting to smuggle rice for SHSs in Bono East

The National Investigation Bureau (NIB) in Bono East has intercepted a Kia-Rhino truck that was allegedly involved in a scheme to divert food supplies meant for the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP).

The truck, with registration number AS 9584-14, was carrying 56 bags of 50-kilogram ‘Lucy’ branded rice, which was intended for distribution to Jema Senior High School in Kintampo South District and Kintampo Senior High School in Kintampo North Municipality.

Reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle was arrested, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.

According to a source from the NIB in Techiman, the incident occurred on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The truck had picked up the rice from Techiman Senior High School (TESS), a designated distribution center. However, it was intercepted in Tuobodom, the capital of Techiman North District, before reaching its intended destination.

Instead of delivering the rice to the schools, the driver allegedly offloaded it onto two tricycles (Aboboyaa) at Tuobodom. The GNA observed the Kia truck and the two tricycles, still loaded with rice, parked at the Bono East Regional NIB Command in Techiman during a visit.

    Fire guts Agbogbloshie market

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed a fire outbreak at Accra’s Agbogbloshie market.

Providing updates through GNFS’s Facebook Live platform, ADO1 Alex King Nartey described the fire as “raging” but stated that officers from the Makola and Circle stations successfully contained it.

Nartey shared footage highlighting “pockets of flames” primarily concentrated around the market’s refuse dump area.

He emphasized the challenges firefighters faced, noting that the market’s congestion and limited accessibility significantly hindered their response efforts.

Although the team managed to prevent the fire from spreading further, the lack of functional hydrants in the area made replenishing water supplies difficult.

He said that GNFS had “managed to contain [the fire] from further spread,” he noted their supply was “difficult to replenish” seeing as “there’s no functional hydrant here”.

“Accessibility to go and replenish and come back is a problem [too], presenting a very big challenge to the officers here,” he added.

He confirmed that no casualties had been reported but stated that damage assessments would only be possible after the fire was fully extinguished.

The fire broke out on Sunday evening, November 24, 2024, with GNFS providing a live update around 11 PM. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Galamsey fight still my priority – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, highlighting its destructive effects on water bodies, farmlands, and the environment.

Speaking at the first-ever graduation ceremony of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Eastern Region, the President outlined strategies to address the menace, including the adoption of responsible mining practices, community collaboration, and advanced technologies such as drone surveillance.

He emphasized the critical role of education and skilled professionals in advancing sustainable solutions to these environmental challenges.

“We are living in a world that demands urgent action. The impact of climate change is no longer a distant threat. It is here with us. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, depleting water resources, deforestation, and biodiversity loss are all stark reminders of the need to rethink how we live and interact with our environment.

“The establishment of UESD was a deliberate response to these challenges. This university is strategically positioned to produce experts, researchers, and innovators who can address environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

President Akufo-Addo also underscored the broader context of climate change, calling for urgent action to mitigate its impact.

He commended the university for equipping its graduates with the knowledge and tools to lead Ghana’s transition towards sustainable development and serve as a model for global environmental stewardship.

In his remarks, he stressed the importance of balancing environmental preservation with economic growth to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

  • 2024 elections remain Dec 7 – EC refutes Wontumi TV presenter’s claims

2024 elections remain Dec 7 – EC refutes Wontumi TV presenter’s claims

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted allegations regarding separate voting dates for presidential candidates in the 2024 general elections.

These claims, stemming from recent media reports by a Wontumi TV presenter, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, were categorically dismissed by the Commission, which urged the public to disregard such misinformation.

In an official statement released on November 24, the EC reaffirmed that the nationwide voting for the 2024 elections will occur on Saturday, December 7, 2024, between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

“The general public is informed that the 2024 election will take place on 7th December, 2024.”

The Commission also encouraged all eligible voters to actively participate in the elections and called for calm and orderly conduct at the polling stations.

Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a Kumasi-based radio and television presenter, who was arrested by the Ghana Police Service on Saturday for offences including publication of false news contrary to section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) has been granted bail.

The Service earlier invited him for questioning following the circulation of a video on social media in which the presenter is seen at the studios of Wontumi FM in Kumasi making false claims about the voting schedule for the December 2024 general elections.

In the video, Oheneba Asiedu is heard urging the public to vote for presidential candidates on separate dates during the elections—a statement described by the Police as untrue and likely to disturb public peace.

Oheneba Asiedu was asked to report to the Ashanti Regional Police Command in Kumasi to assist with investigations into the matter. He was arrested at the Command and is currently in Police custody.

The Police have assured that the case will be presented before the court for him to face justice.

Meanwhile, the Police have cautioned media practitioners and the public at large to exercise responsibility and accuracy in their communication, particularly during this election period.

“We urge the public, particularly media practitioners, to exercise utmost caution and responsibility, and refrain from publishing false news which is likely to disturb public peace before, during, and after the upcoming general elections,” a Police statement emphasized.

Ghana’s economy is recovering faster than expected – Finance Minister

The Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has assured Ghanaians that the country’s economy is on a steady recovery after enduring years of difficulties.

At the unveiling of a watermelon factory in Walewale, Dr. Adam expressed his confidence in the country’s financial recovery, noting positive trends in key economic indicators.

“We are witnessing a significant turnaround,” he said confidently. “Macroeconomic stability is rapidly being restored. Ghanaians are beginning to see real, tangible progress every day.”

Dr. Adam also pointed out that Ghana’s economy, which was initially expected to grow by only 1.5% in 2023, surpassed forecasts with a growth of 2.9%, signaling brighter prospects for the future.

This growth comes as part of a broader recovery from the economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions in global supply chains, and inflationary pressures.

He also highlighted Ghana’s 5.8% GDP growth rate in the first half of 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 0.4 percentage points, which Dr. Adam described as evidence that the country is not just recovering, but surpassing its previous economic standing.

“This shows that we are not just bouncing back,” he remarked, “we are surpassing where we were before the crisis.”

A leader who lets guinea fowls escape is not fit to lead again – Bawumia warns

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged Ghanaians to firmly oppose the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leader, John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December 7 elections.

During a campaign rally in Saboba on Saturday, November 23, 2024, Bawumia accused the NDC of failing to develop the northern regions and mishandling funds meant for progress.

He specifically targeted the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), a project launched by the NDC government to advance northern development, and claimed that funds allocated to it were misused.

Bawumia highlighted the guinea fowl farming initiative under SADA, which he argued had no real benefits for the people, as an example of this mismanagement.

In his harsh critique of Mahama, Bawumia accused the former president of overseeing the squander of hundreds of millions of cedis intended for the north’s development.

He also pointed out the lack of any significant SADA projects in the region, as evidence of the NDC’s failure to deliver on its promises.

The SADA guinea fowl project became a symbol of alleged corruption and inefficiency during Mahama’s tenure.

Bawumia mocked the claim that the guinea fowls had flown to Burkina Faso, a statement that became a point of ridicule in political circles.

“In this election, there are two of us, isn’t it? Myself and the former president. During his time, all the money, hundreds of millions that were given to him [John Dramani Mahama] to develop the north, he said he was raring guinea fowls.

“Guineafowls under SADA and we have not seen one SADA project in the five northern regions. Is there a SADA project in Saboba?

“We asked him, where are the guinea fowls and he said they have flown to Burkina Faso. And today, he says he wants to come back. Do you want him to come back?”

We will beat NDC with a massive margin in Dec polls – Bawumia

The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed strong confidence in securing victory in the 2024 elections.

Speaking during a campaign in the Saboba constituency, Bawumia emphasized that his primary focus is not just winning, but achieving a decisive margin of victory.

This optimism follows a recent poll by Professor Smart Sarpong, which shows Bawumia leading the race with 49.1% of the vote.

While campaigning in the Saboba constituency on Saturday, November 23, Bawumia called on Ghanaians to show up in large numbers, ensuring a decisive victory.

“Make no mistake about it. By the grace of God, Insha Allah, we are winning this election. The only issue for me today, if we vote today, is the gap.

Bawumia urged his supporters to come out in full force and help secure an overwhelming win for the NPP.

“How big a gap we are going to give our opponents? I want a big gap. I want all of you to come out because we want to beat them well, well,” he added.

Akufo-Addo commissions 73 officers into Ghana Armed Forces

Seventy-three officers from the Short Service Commission and Special Duties Intake 61 have officially joined the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), marking the start of their service to the nation.

These officers, coming from a variety of professional and academic backgrounds, successfully completed a six-month training program designed to prepare them for their roles as skilled and disciplined defenders of the nation’s sovereignty.

The training program, which combined theoretical lessons and practical military exercises, was crafted to equip them with the necessary skills to tackle modern challenges in combat and leadership.

The program began in June and initially included 76 cadets—35 for the Army, 15 for the Navy, and 26 for the Air Force. However, due to medical reasons, three cadets could not complete the training, bringing the final number to 73.
    Recognitions

During the graduation ceremony, held at the Ghana Military Academy (GMA), Junior Under Officer Yaro Mohammed-Keilan was awarded the Chief of Defence Staff Award. Cadet Sergeant Gyamfi Samuel Ameyaw received the Commandant Award, and Cadet Corporal Wuni Nadia Isabelle was presented with the Best Female Cadet Award.

President Akufo-Addo, who officiated the ceremony, praised the cadets for their commitment and hard work throughout the course. He commended their discipline and precision during the parade, describing their performance as an inspiring testament to their dedication to excellence.

“These cadets are a reflection of the enduring values of the GMA, and I am confident that their families and loved ones share in this proud moment,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.

The President also acknowledged the challenges faced by the academy but commended the acting Commandant for ensuring that the high standards of the institution were maintained.

“Your dedication ensures that our armed forces remain vigilant and prepared to safeguard Ghana’s peace and stability,” he said.
    Tackling Regional Security Concerns

President Akufo-Addo also spoke about the evolving security challenges in the West African region, citing threats such as environmental degradation from illegal mining and the spread of terrorism from the Sahel. He outlined his government’s commitment to addressing these issues through the ongoing expansion of the armed forces.

Key initiatives include the establishment of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in each of the country’s 16 regions, alongside major investments in equipment, logistics, and specialized units. These improvements include the acquisition of armoured vehicles, surveillance equipment, offshore security vessels, and advanced aircraft.

“These initiatives ensure that our armed forces are equipped to handle internal security concerns and regional threats, while also maintaining Ghana’s legacy in international peacekeeping,” the President explained.
    Ghana’s Role in Global Peacekeeping

The President also took the opportunity to highlight Ghana’s long-standing contributions to global peacekeeping since 1960. Ghana is currently the sixth-largest contributor of troops to UN peace operations, with 2,600 personnel deployed in conflict zones around the world.

“This legacy is built on the sacrifices made by our personnel and speaks to our nation’s unwavering commitment to peace and security,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He encouraged the new officers to carry forward this proud tradition of peacekeeping.

“As members of the GAF, you must lead with integrity, serve with dedication, and inspire others with your courage. Let your service reflect the hopes and aspirations of our nation and the highest ideals of our armed forces,” he concluded.

Properties damaged in another blasting incident at Dabenyin

The company handling the Kasoa-Winneba road expansion project, Nag Fairmount Constructions Limited, has caused significant damage in the Dabenyin area of the Gomoa East District, Central Region, due to another blasting incident.

Several buildings were affected, with rock fragments from the explosion landing on nearby structures.

Among the damaged properties were a fully completed 16-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom unit still under construction.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in this explosion, unlike the previous Buduburam incident, but the damage to the buildings has raised concerns among the affected residents. Many feel that the authorities have not shown adequate attention to their plight.

Kwadwo Amoah, a resident whose home was damaged, shared his frustration “I called the person who was supposed to come and inspect, but he never came. I took a GHS25,000 loan to roof the building. I don’t want them to come, remove some, and replace them. They should bring someone to change the entire roofing so we all have peace.”

Albert Appiah, another affected resident, expressed similar concerns, stating that the company has yet to respond to his request for roofing repairs.

Issah Rahman, also impacted, described how a stone from the blast ended up in his bedroom, after penetrating the roof.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Gomoa East has completed its assessment of the situation. Robert Nana Hackman, the NADMO director, confirmed in an off-camera conversation with Channel One News that compensation for the affected property owners will be arranged shortly.

Additionally, Hackman mentioned that medical expenses for victims of the Buduburam blast, which occurred on October 14, have been taken care of, although compensation for the destroyed properties from that incident is still pending.

28 artefacts looted during Sagrenti War finally repatriated to Ghana

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, twenty-eight artefacts looted during the Sagrenti War were returned to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in a ceremonial event at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

This occasion coincided with the 100th anniversary of King Prempeh I’s return from exile in Seychelles, marking a significant milestone in the Ashanti Kingdom’s history.

The artefacts, which include gold jewellery, ceremonial swords, treasury padlocks, and other regalia, were taken by British forces during the war.

Over the years, they came into the possession of a West African art collector in 1922. AngloGold Ashanti, the mining company, later acquired the items in 2000 and, following negotiations with the Manhyia Palace, facilitated their return.

Stewart Bailey, the Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Director of AngloGold Ashanti, praised the company’s role in ensuring the artefacts’ return.

He highlighted the collaborative effort that made the repatriation possible and expressed gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan, and other dignitaries present.

“This return is a testament to what unity and partnership can achieve in preserving and honouring cultural legacies,” Bailey remarked.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II acknowledged the importance of the return, describing it as a significant step in healing the wounds of history.

He expressed his gratitude for the gesture, which he believes contributes to restoring the dignity of the Ashanti Kingdom.

The Sagrenti War, also known as the Yaa Asantewaa War, marked a key moment in the Ashanti Kingdom’s resistance against British colonial forces, led by Nana Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu.

Following the war, King Prempeh I was exiled, and many cultural artefacts were taken by the British.

The repatriated artefacts will be displayed at the Manhyia Palace Museum, offering the public a chance to engage with these important cultural treasures.

The return is part of a wider commemoration of King Prempeh I’s return, which includes a grand durbar and a symposium on his lasting legacy.

She also acknowledged the UK Government’s recognition of Tech in Ghana as a platform that fosters a valuable exchange of information and ideas, promoting mutual learning among stakeholders.

In addressing concerns about barriers such as the high cost of technology access, she reassured that these critical issues would take center stage in the event’s discussions.

“The whole echoes of Tech in Ghana is about overcoming challenges. If cost is excluding people from tech, I am sure this will be a key topic of discussion,” she said.

She also praised the impact of digitization in Ghana, highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of local tech entrepreneurs, investors, and global corporations operating in the country.

“When we think about the jobs of the future and the young people coming through Ghana’s education system, it is clear that they need to see and create opportunities in tech,” she added.

Akosua Annobil, the Founder of Tech in Ghana, spoke to journalists following the press launch, highlighting the remarkable expansion of Ghana’s tech ecosystem over the past seven years. She explained that the upcoming event would not only reflect the ecosystem’s progress but also showcase the platform’s transformation and impact.

Annobil described how Tech in Ghana had evolved from a simple conference into a key platform for amplifying the country’s technological advancements. She encouraged attendees to utilize the newly launched Tech in Ghana app, designed to enhance participant engagement. Mr Arthur also assured the public that the building would be used responsibly, “We know other agencies under the Ministry have not been fortunate to get such infrastructure, and we will protect and use it for the benefit of all,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining the facility, advising management to allocate resources for its upkeep to ensure its longevity.

  • NPA blames exchange rate fluctuations for rising petroleum prices

NPA blames exchange rate fluctuations for rising petroleum prices

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has stated that the main factors contributing to the volatility of petroleum prices have largely been addressed.

During a discussion with selected editors in Accra, he explained that recent price increases were primarily driven by fluctuations in the exchange rate.

However, he pointed out that the current stability of the Cedi is a promising sign for maintaining more consistent fuel prices moving forward.

One ongoing concern, he noted, is the approximately $400 million needed each month by Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) to import petroleum products.

Despite this, the NPA is taking steps to mitigate rising costs, particularly for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). A new tender programme has been introduced to reduce LPG prices and alleviate the financial strain on consumers.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid also called on the Bank of Ghana to set a guaranteed exchange rate for petroleum importers, a move that could help curb speculative pricing and provide much-needed stability to the sector.

Regarding the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), the NPA CEO discussed the gradual roll-out of the initiative, which is designed to provide LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) a five-year period to recover their investments. This model, he said, will eventually eliminate the need for gas filling stations across the country.

He emphasized that Ghana and Nigeria are the only countries in West Africa operating gas filling stations, making the CRM a more efficient and sustainable solution for the LPG industry. Dr. Abdul-Hamid also urged bottling companies to raise awareness about the CRM collection points, noting that while 30 percent of Ghana’s LPG supply comes from Atuabo Gas Company, the remaining 70 percent is imported from Europe.

  • IMF to greenlight $360M disbursement to Ghana after review

IMF to greenlight $360M disbursement to Ghana after review

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Board is scheduled to meet in early December to assess and possibly approve a $360 million disbursement for Ghana.

If the disbursement is granted, Ghana’s total disbursements under the IMF’s $3 billion Extended Credit Facility will reach $1.92 billion.

This decision comes after a two-week review of Ghana’s fiscal data, which culminated in a staff-level agreement between the IMF and Ghana on October 4, as part of the third program review.

Julie Kozack, the IMF’s Director of Communications, provided this update during a press briefing in Washington, D.C. on November 21.

“Once the review is completed by the IMF’s executive board, Ghana would have access to about $360 million in terms of disbursement.

“We are working, our staff are working toward a board meeting in early December and will provide additional details on the precise date when we have them,” she added.

Kozack also noted that staff are aiming for a board meeting in early December and promised to provide additional details once a date is set.

She highlighted the positive performance of the program, particularly in relation to Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.

Looking ahead, she emphasized the need for continued implementation of policy reforms, stressing that ensuring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability will be key, especially in light of global challenges.

Kozack concluded by saying that further updates on Ghana’s progress would be shared after the board meeting, following the release of the staff report.

“What I can say in addition is that the programme performance has been good. There has been in particular remarkable progress on debt restructuring,” she said.

“Economic growth in the first half of 2024 exceeded our expectations, exceeded our projections. Inflation has declined and the fiscal and external positions have shown marked improvement.

“Looking ahead, what will be important for Ghana will be the continued implementation of the policy and reform agendas, especially given the difficult situation that many countries in the region and globally face. And it remains essential to fully restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability.

“And we will, of course, have further updates on Ghana when we release the staff report, when we publish the staff report after the board meeting takes place. And we are just about out of time,” she added.

The Ghana Police Service has revealed that it has summoned Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a Kumasi-based radio and television presenter, to assist with an ongoing investigation regarding the spread of false information about the upcoming general elections on December 7.

This follows the circulation of a video on social media, which features Oheneba Nana Asiedu at the Wontumi FM studios in Kumasi, where he suggests that voters should cast their votes for presidential candidates on different days.

The police have emphasized that this claim is inaccurate and does not align with the official election process.

They have described the statements made in the video as “false and potentially disruptive to public peace.”

Authorities have expressed concern about the potential consequences of such misleading information, warning that it could cause confusion and disrupt the election process.

In their statement, the police urged both the public and media professionals to be cautious when sharing information, stressing the importance of responsible reporting.

They called on journalists and media outlets to verify the accuracy of their content to avoid spreading falsehoods that could lead to unrest.

  • Alan’s attack on Kufuor is an act of betrayal – Wontumi

Alan’s attack on Kufuor is an act of betrayal – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has strongly criticized Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, for his remarks about former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Alan Kyerematen had expressed disapproval of former President Kufuor’s endorsement of NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing it as a questionable decision. Kufuor had stated that Dr. Bawumia was the most suitable leader for Ghana at this time.

Addressing journalists in the Ashanti Region, Chairman Wontumi accused Alan Kyerematen, now running as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections, of ingratitude and betrayal. He likened Alan’s actions to that of Judas Iscariot, claiming that his conduct reveals a lack of love for the NPP.

“One gentleman who was with us called Alan Kyerematen has shown clearly through his actions that he has never loved the NPP, and just as Judas betrayed Jesus, that is how Alan Kyerematen has betrayed the NPP and President Kufuor.

“It was J.A. Kufuor who saw you, Alan Kyerematen. The power to appoint is reserved for the president, and he gave you the role of ambassador, after which he made you a minister for trade. Akufo-Addo, during his term, also gave you the position of trade minister again. Akufo-Addo, in his second term, gave you the position again,” Wontumi said in Twi.

Wontumi further alleged that Alan is acting under the influence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

“Oh, Alan Kyerematen, you are still complaining despite all the good things NPP did for you, unlike those of us who did not get any appointments and who did not sit on any board. Oh, Alan, so you let Mahama speak to you for you to insult Kufuor. This is a shame; it is a big shame. Shame, shame on you.”
    Background

Former President Kufuor, in a recent media interview, endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserting his capabilities as a leader. In response, Alan Kyerematen criticized Kufuor, calling the endorsement a stain on his otherwise admirable political legacy and questioning Dr. Bawumia’s competence.

Chairman Wontumi sees this as a clear sign of Alan’s disloyalty to the NPP and a move to serve the interests of the opposition NDC. He described Alan’s criticism as an act of betrayal against both the party and President Kufuor.

Ghana’s next general election is scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2024, where citizens will choose a new president and parliamentary representatives.

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has announced that it will begin the scheduled cleaning and inspection of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) on Monday, November 25, 2024.

This critical maintenance activity is part of regulatory requirements aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the pipeline.

The exercise, which adheres to global industry standards, will cover the entire pipeline network from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region.

It underscores WAPCo’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the WAGP and ensuring reliable service across West Africa.

The project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, starting November 25, will focus on the pipeline’s onshore section in Nigeria and is expected to last 10 days. WAPCo has already engaged stakeholders in preparation for this phase and anticipates minimal disruptions to gas transportation services.

The second phase, set for January 2025, will address the offshore segment of the pipeline, stretching from Badagry in Lagos State, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Ghana.

A statement issued by WAPCo outlined that during this offshore phase, reverse flow gas transportation from Ghana’s Western Region to Tema will be temporarily suspended. Operations at key facilities in Tema, Ghana; Lomé, Togo; and Cotonou, Benin, will also be halted.

This phase will include replacing subsea valves at strategic points to enhance safety.

The statement added that these inspections, conducted every five years, were last completed in January 2020.

To ensure the project’s success, WAPCo has been in communication with stakeholders and will continue to engage them to address any potential concerns.

Govt ordered to compensate Shalimar Abbiusi for rights violations

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court has directed the Ghanaian government to compensate Shalimar Abbiusi, the spokesperson for the New Force Movement.

The ruling comes in response to her arrest and subsequent deportation. Abbiusi was initially detained on December 4, 2023, and charged with allegedly falsifying documents to secure a residence permit as a student of Ghana Christian University College. She appeared before the Kaneshie District Court for these charges.

Although granted bail and released by National Security, she was rearrested and deported on December 20, 2023, just a day after state prosecutors from the Ghana Immigration Service dropped all charges against her.

In a statement released on Friday, November 22, the New Force Movement announced that the ECOWAS Court had declared her rearrest and deportation unlawful, ruling that her rights had been violated and ordering the Ghanaian government to compensate her.

“This case highlighted significant issues of abuse of power and political persecution. The New Force is pleased to announce a significant victory following the recent ruling by the ECOWAS Court, which confirmed that the Republic of Ghana violated the rights of our spokesperson, Shalimar Abbiusi.

“This ruling underscores our commitment to justice and accountability in a democratic society. The court’s decision comes after a series of unlawful actions were taken against Ms. Abbiusi, including her wrongful arrest and subsequent rearrest by the Ghana Immigration Service. The unlawful actions also caused significant damage to her personal and professional standing, amplifying the gravity of the injustice,” it stated.

The Movement emphasized that the court’s decision highlights the importance of justice and accountability in a democratic society. It noted that the actions against Abbiusi—including her wrongful arrest, rearrest, and deportation—caused severe harm to her personal and professional reputation, underscoring the gravity of the injustice.

Lawyers Francis-Xavier Sosu and Belinda Narkey Quaynor, who represented Abbiusi, welcomed the ruling. Sosu expressed gratitude to the court, stating he feels vindicated by its decision to uphold Abbiusi’s rights.

The New Force reiterated its commitment to advocating for the fair application of laws across Africa and called on the Ghanaian government to respect human rights and the rule of law. It stated, “the New Force is dedicated to ensuring that laws are upheld fairly across all African nations, advocating for the rights of individuals regardless of their background.

The Movement also appealed to civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the international community to condemn such violations and support reforms to safeguard human rights in Ghana.

“We call on civil society organisations, human rights advocates, and the international community to join us in condemning these violations and supporting efforts for meaningful reform in Ghana. Together, we can foster a future where every individual’s rights are respected and protected. Peace, stability must be maintained as we head to the polls – Akufo-Addo tells Ghanaians

President Akufo-Addo has reiterated Ghana’s unwavering dedication to upholding free and fair elections, describing this democratic principle as “non-negotiable.”

Addressing the graduating officers during the Short Service Commission and Special Intake ceremony at the Ghana Military Academy, he highlighted the critical need to preserve peace and stability as the nation gears up for the December 7 general elections.

“No ambitions of any politician or political party will ever compromise the peace and stability that we as a nation have worked so hard to build and enjoy,” he declared.

The President encouraged security agencies to maintain unwavering professionalism and neutrality while carrying out their duties during the elections.

He expressed his belief that Ghana’s democracy would endure and thrive despite the ongoing electoral tensions.

“In two weeks, Ghana will once again demonstrate a democratic maturity through the conduct of free and fair elections,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

“I urge you to discharge your duties with professionalism and neutrality, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.”

The President reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to democracy, stating, “The right to free and fair elections is non-negotiable, and I’m committed to ensuring that the will of the people prevails in every election.”

As he looks ahead to his transition from office, he reiterated his focus on safeguarding Ghana’s peace and democratic integrity.

“The peace of Ghana is a sacred trust. And as I transition from office, I’ll do so with the utmost respect for our democratic processes, safeguarding the future of Ghana for generations to come.”

President Akufo-Addo further pointed out the initiatives his administration has undertaken to enhance national security, notably the establishment of military bases across the nation.

“The security landscape in our region is dynamic and at times unpredictable,” he noted.

“From the threat of environmental degradation through illegal mining to the alarming southward movement of terrorism from the Sahel towards our borders, the challenges are complex and multifaceted.”

He added, “The armed forces must thus remain vigilant, adaptable, and prepared to confront these evolving threats with resolve. It is in this context that my government has embarked on the progressive expansion of the armed forces, ensuring a military presence across all 16 regions of our nation.”

Atta Mills’ brothers have done nothing to keep his memory – Koku Anyidoho

The CEO of the Atta Mills Institute and former aide to the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has harshly criticized the late President’s brothers for failing to honor his legacy.

The tension between Anyidoho and the Mills family began in July 2022 when he advocated for the restoration of Asomdwee Park, the burial site of President Mills, which had fallen into neglect.

In his latest initiative, Anyidoho has reached out to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the NPP Vice Presidential Candidate, to secure funding for the construction of a state-of-the-art library in Ekumfi Otuam, the hometown of President Mills. The library is intended to preserve the memory of the 3rd President of Ghana’s 4th Republic.

During the library’s commissioning, Anyidoho recounted the resistance he faced from the late President’s brothers when he attempted to renovate Asomdwee Park, highlighting the ongoing struggles to preserve Mills’ legacy.

“President died as the President of the Republic of Ghana. What do we do to honour his memory? Abusuapanin has already spoken about Asomdwee Park. John Mahama was President of Ghana for four years but couldn’t do anything about it, but I was attacked left, right, and center when I led efforts to renovate the place,” he said.

Twelve years after President Mills’ death, Mr. Anyidoho has called on the Mills brothers to showcase any project they have undertaken to honor their brother’s legacy.

“Twelve years after his death, I am challenging President Mills’ late brothers Samuel (Samuel Atta Mills, MP for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem) and Cadman (Dr. Cadman Mills) to show a single thing they have done to keep his memory. Ask them. They have done absolutely nothing,” he added.

  • You don’t have the right to beat citizens – Martin Kpebu to Achiase Jungle officer

You don’t have the right to beat citizens – Martin Kpebu to Achiase Jungle officer

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly criticized the Commanding Officer of the Achiase Jungle Warfare School over his warning that individuals disrupting the December 7 elections would face severe punishment.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, November 22, 2024, Kpebu described the comments made by Lt. Col. Jacob Codjoe as disgraceful and accused him of engaging in self-serving behavior.

He speculated that the commander might have made the remarks in a bid to gain favor or secure a promotion from his superiors.

“I’m not surprised, in the military there is something they call eye service or face fine. Basically, you do something like this to catch the attention of superiors and the commander-in-chief for promotion. That is the only way I can understand why he is doing this because why would you say this in a democracy like Ghana?

“We embraced democracy 32 years ago and we still have soldiers coming to talk like we are still in the days of the PNDC or AFRC and the military juntas, then I can ascribe it to eye service,” he said.

Kpebu argued that such remarks are unacceptable in a democratic society, stressing that the military has no place in election-related matters. He urged against deploying the military during the election period, emphasizing the need to safeguard democratic principles.

“It is despicable and must put him in his right place that there is no room for such statements in Ghana. The military had their days when they ruled so they should stay out of this election. We don’t want them coming back to repeat the Techiman South incident. We don’t want that to happen again and nobody has asked Lt. Col. Codjoe to beat citizens and has no right to do so.”

    Background

The Commanding Officer of the Achiase Jungle Warfare School in the Eastern Region, Lt. Col. Jacob Codjoe, issued a stern warning to individuals planning to disrupt the peace during the December 7, 2024, elections.

Speaking at a public event in a video circulated on social media, Lt. Col. Codjoe cautioned potential troublemakers to abandon any disruptive intentions. He stressed that the military would take decisive action to ensure order and protect the democratic process.

He said: “I am telling you here that I will come this December 7, but only within the Akyemansa enclave, if the police tell me they cannot handle the situation. And when I come, I will not talk. I will beat you and the hell out of you. I always want people to try me, so any of you seated here can try me or any of my men that day.

“When you go to the polling station, just cast your vote, go home, and sleep. When it’s 5 p.m., come, and they will tell you where to stand. They will count the votes for you, and if you win, clap and go home. Then, you will not have any problem with me and my people. We are not going to sit by and let just two or three people distort the peace that Ghana is enjoying.”

His remarks have sparked widespread condemnation from the public, with many questioning the appropriateness of military involvement in electoral matters.

Ghanaians are set to head to the polls on December 7, 2024, to elect a president and members of parliament in what is anticipated to be a pivotal election.

Prepare for both victory, defeat in Dec polls – IGP advises political parties

The Ghana Police Service has urged political parties and independent candidates to lower their expectations as they approach the 2024 elections, stressing the importance of upholding peace and stability in what promises to be a high-stakes contest.

This message was conveyed during a police briefing on November 21, where representatives from all political parties were informed of the force’s election security measures.

Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, assured the public that the police would respond to any electoral violence with professionalism, taking necessary steps to either escalate or de-escalate situations when required.

He pointed out that out of the 13 or 12 candidates vying for the presidency, only one will win, and similarly, only 276 of the 801 candidates competing for parliamentary seats will emerge victorious.

“With the 13 or the 12, whichever it is, there is one clear thing, only one will win, the rest will not win. In the same way, the 801 vying for the position of 276 seats, only and I repeat only 276 will win, the rest will not win. We need to come to this realisation and therefore measure our expectations.

“If I want to be very blunt, I will say that as you plan to celebrate your possible victory, plan to celebrate your defeat or endure your defeat. So at the end of the day, Ghana and only Ghanaians will win in this election as we have said”, he stated.

  • NDC calls for arrest of Wontumi TV presenter over misinformation

NDC calls for arrest of Wontumi TV presenter over misinformation

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded the arrest of Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a presenter at Wontumi Radio/TV, accusing him of spreading false information about the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.

Asiedu misled the public by asserting that the elections, particularly the presidential race, would take place on separate days.

He further claimed that the December 7, 2024, vote would be for the first candidates on the ballot, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who appears first on the ballot.

“Dr. Bawumia is number one on the ballot, so on December 7, we are going to vote for him first. We are going to vote for the first seven people on the ballot, then after that, we will vote for the remaining 7, from numbers 8, 9, 10, and 11 going,” he said in Twi.

Nana Asiedu also implied that voters who do not cast their vote for Dr. Bawumia on Saturday, December 7, 2024, would lose the opportunity to vote for the other candidates on the following days.

“So, on December 7, we are going to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and maybe the next day or two days after, we would vote for the number 2 on the ballot, then we move to number 3, and on a different day, we would vote for number 4. This is going to be the trend.

“Because we are going to vote for the first seven people on the ballot first, that is why we are going to vote on December 7… If you don’t vote when it is Dr. Bawumia’s turn on December 7, you will not get the chance to vote when it gets to the turn of the other people on the ballot. The police and Electoral Commission officers would not give you the chance to vote,” he added.

A member of the NDC communication team, Twum Barima, voiced his surprise and disapproval after hearing Nana Asiedu’s interview on Accra FM.

He argued that the presenter was purposefully spreading false information about the December 7 election and called for his arrest.

“I was at a programme with IGP Dampare and said that what he frowns on the most is misinformation. If he is listening to this or the police administration has heard this, they should go and arrest this idiot,” Twum Barima said.

My predictions won’t fail, cut off my head if they do – Global Info Analytics boss

Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Musah Danquah, has boldly stated that he is willing to face severe consequences if his predictions about the outcome of the December 7 elections prove to be incorrect.

He expressed confidence in his analysis, insisting that his prediction is based on solid data, and emphasized that he stands by his forecast.

“On December 1, I will announce the winner of the election. If my predictions go wrong, they can take my head off. We are very confident. Nobody else has seen what we have seen in the data. I believe in data, and I will never go against it. On December 1, we will tell Ghanaians who is going to win and by what margin,” Musah Danquah said in an interview with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Neat FM.

He added, “Let’s look at the NPP primary. If we had gotten that one wrong, they would have finished us by now.”

Danquah also reflected on the accuracy of his previous predictions, pointing out that if he had been wrong about the NPP primary, his credibility would have been at risk.

The upcoming 2024 general elections are shaping up to be a highly competitive contest between the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), both of which are determined to secure victory.

  • I am not responsible for the demolition of GBC property – Sylvester Tetteh

I am not responsible for the demolition of GBC property – Sylvester Tetteh

The Member of Parliament for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro and Deputy Minister for Information, Sylvester Tetteh, has revealed plans to investigate the allocation of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) lands to private individuals in the Akwasa area, following a recent demolition.

Tetteh, who was accused of demolishing a GBC structure, firmly denied the allegations. He attributed the negative publicity to administrative oversights within the corporation.

According to Tetteh, there is an agreement between the GA South Municipal Assembly and GBC to repurpose the disputed land for a public school, which led to the demolition, a process carried out by the Assembly.

He further challenged the GBC Director of Legal Affairs to provide evidence that he was involved in demolishing any land other than the one allocated for development.

“As a sector deputy minister, and my boss will approve that, I will institute investigations into how GBC lands have ended up building private homes here where we are standing. So he should get ready. If he’s a director of legal and he had the impudence to report his sector deputy minister to the police and had the gut to put my picture on their social media handle.

He added, “I want to deal with the matter of lies that have been spilt about me that I have forcefully demolished the bungalow. What he claimed to be GBC property, a bungalow. There’s no bungalow here. There’s an old dilapidated structure here and let me tell you, there’s one man who’s has been an occupant of that place.

“They’ve been collecting money from him for years. No GBC staff had ever occupied that place for a very long time. It’s a boy’s quarters dilapidated building. Nobody works in GBC had occupied that property and when the estate manager was here and the coordinates were picked, the coordinates that were picked, that included that whole area. So if you want to build there and an old dilapidated structure is there, what do you do?

“Don’t you clear it before you do the construction? So this is the site plan I’ll share with you. This is a letter sent by Kwame Waja on the instructions of the director general. Where have I gone wrong? Where has the assembly gone wrong? The municipal assembly has not done anything untoward. So this issue of a lawless MP. If I want, if I’m lawless for the sake of my community, I’ll continue to be lawless.”

It’s just for fun – NDC’s Joseph Yamin clarifies viral shooting video

The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yamin, has addressed the backlash over a viral video of him practising with a sidearm.

He clarified that his aim was to improve his targeting skills.

The video, shared by Yamin on his Facebook page, showed him at a shooting range in the United States, sparking mixed reactions. Some critics questioned his actions, while others wondered why an NDC leader would be engaged in such an activity.

In an interview with Julius Caesar Anadem on Ultimate FM, Yamin swiftly defended his actions, offering clarification on the reasons behind his decision to practise shooting.

“I am not practising how to fire; I am only sharpening my skills. I know how to shoot. What I put out there is just for fun, do you think I am too concerned about what people are saying?”

“I don’t care the meaning you read into the video; this is just the pistol, I have more videos. I paid for the range. Probably, it could also send a signal that if it’s about shooting, it’s not only the military that knows how to shoot,” he retorted.

“So the video shouldn’t be on social media, I am so happy that you Caesar, this your nice head if I want to target it I can target it,” he bragged.

He clarified that the shooting session occurred at a range in the United States, where he paid to improve his skills.

Additionally, he revealed that he has more videos, which he intends to release soon.

“When I go to the range in America, where I pay dollars to go and sharpen my skills, you tell me that it’s scary. The guns I was using for the shooting can never be brought to Ghana. Facebook is private, did I force people to go onto my social media platform? You wanted to see it and went there,” he asked.

“Thousands have gone there to view it, and I want more people to go there and view it. I want more people to view and have more ideas. This one was just the pistol. I have another one; I will put it there,” he said.

Accompanying the President were His Royal Majesty, Nii King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse; Deputy Minister for Health, Adelaide Ntim; Dr. Sefah Sarpong Bediako, Chairman of the Ghana Health Service Council; and Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, to celebrate Ms. Opoku-Kyeremeh’s outstanding achievements.

The award highlighted her exceptional dedication, innovative efforts, and remarkable service in advancing healthcare across the country. As part of the recognition, she received a certificate of honor, a citation plaque, a 50-inch LED Smart TV, a new Volkswagen Virtus car, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Dubai.

During the ceremony at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), President Akufo-Addo praised healthcare workers for their unwavering commitment and vital role in the nation’s healthcare system.

The President pointed out that under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, several initiatives have been implemented to strengthen the health sector, despite significant challenges. These measures include community health service programs, improvements in the primary healthcare network, and the expansion of services to remote areas.

These efforts, he emphasized, reflect the government’s dedication to building an inclusive healthcare system that benefits all citizens. Additionally, President Akufo-Addo highlighted steps taken by his administration to address staffing shortages in the health sector.

“Over the past eight years, 202,527 medical personnel have been recruited, including medical officers, house officers, specialists, nurses, midwives, and administrative managers,” he said.

“These include 12,132 medical officers, house officers, and specialists; 165,222 diploma and degree nurses and midwives; 8,688 support staff, including administrative managers, cooks, and executive officers; 1,303 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; 80 medical herbalists; and 13,471 allied health professionals and allied health interns,” the president added.

NDC mining committee denies allegations of recruiting thugs in Obuasi East

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mining Committee has strongly rejected accusations from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it is recruiting thugs in the Obuasi East Constituency to interfere with the December 7, 2024, elections.

Nana Boakye, the NPP National Organiser, also known as Nana B, claimed that the NDC was conducting private security training under the guise of legitimate activities in the area.

In response, Samuel Hadjor, the Secretary of the NDC Mining Committee, dismissed these allegations as false and without merit, urging the public to ignore them.

Hadjor reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful election process and cautioned against attempts to damage the party’s reputation.

“On November 12, 2024, the NDC Mining Committee held a public mining conference at Mawuli Hotel in Obuasi. The purpose of this conference was to introduce and discuss the NDC’s mining policy document with miners and stakeholders”.

“This conference coincided with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign tour in Obuasi. It was an open event attended by dignitaries, including former Ashanti Regional Minister Alexander Ackon and former MCE for Obuasi Richard Kwasi Ofori Buadi, also known as Zuba. These baseless allegations by the NPP should be treated with the contempt they deserve,” he added.

Mr. Hadjor implied that the allegations were a result of the NPP’s anxiety and dissatisfaction, as the party faces challenges in winning back the confidence of mining communities.

“The NDC’s mining policy has brought hope to miners and small-scale operators, making the NPP apprehensive about losing support. Instead of addressing their failures, they are resorting to baseless propaganda,” he said.

Reaffirming the NDC’s dedication to a peaceful election process, Mr. Hadjor urged Ghanaians to disregard the accusations and concentrate on the relevant issues.

“The NDC is committed to peace and stability. We will not engage in activities that threaten the security of this country. On December 7, 2024, we encourage Ghanaians to vote massively for John Dramani Mahama and all NDC parliamentary candidates,” he stated.

Additionally, he urged miners across the country to reject the NPP and rally behind the NDC’s vision for a reformed mining sector that focuses on the well-being of miners and their communities.

The claims and the NDC’s strong rebuttal have further heightened the tension in the lead-up to the elections, as both parties ramp up their campaigns ahead of the December polls.
