Salifu Amoako and wife make appearance in court today

Founder and General Overseer of Alive Chapel International, Bishop Salifu Amoako, and his wife, Mouha Amoako, have been spotted at an Accra court regarding a fatal crash that occurred in East Legon.

A video shared by GhOne on October 30, 2024, captured the couple exiting the court with their lawyers and aides, heading toward their Range Rover.

However, specific details about the court proceedings have not yet been disclosed.

This court appearance follows the High Court in Accra granting them and Linda Bempah bail of GH¢50,000 each 15 days earlier in connection with the incident.

The Amoakos, who are the parents of 16-year-old Elrad Amoako, the driver involved in the case, faced charges for permitting an unlicensed individual to drive.

They admitted to allowing their son to drive to the gym and other locations.

Meanwhile, Linda Bempah, a sales assistant, was charged for providing Elrad with the car keys.

The court approved their bail after considering their stable residences, employment status, and social standing, despite the prosecution’s call for stricter bail conditions.

Additionally, the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has reported that Elrad Salifu Amoako is currently unfit for police interrogation, even though he was recently discharged from the hospital.

Missing report date won’t affect admission status – MoE to SHS freshers

The Ministry of Education is urging parents to stay calm as incoming first-year students at Senior High Schools (SHS) and technical and vocational institutions prepare for the new academic term, which begins on Thursday, October 31.

In a recent interview on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, addressed concerns about student readiness. He assured parents that admissions will not be lost if students cannot report on the specified date.

He added that to facilitate a smooth transition, a one-week grace period has been established.

Mr Kwarteng explained that formal academic activities will not commence immediately, giving students until November 7 to prepare.

This grace period allows students to settle into their new school environments, gather necessary supplies, and complete any pre-academic requirements.

To alleviate the stress associated with the recent harmonized prospectus system, which standardizes the essential items students must bring, the Ministry has implemented this additional time. Kwarteng acknowledged that many parents felt the timeframe to collect these items was insufficient. As a result, the Ministry has deliberately scheduled the first week for orientation and registration, rather than formal classes. This strategy aims to ensure families can adequately prepare before academic activities officially begin.

“The registration and orientation begin on October 30 and it is different from saying that students are to report on October 30. The real-time for academic activities to begin is on November 7 and I think that is where parents and students need clarification because people are complaining that the time is very short.

“We feel that with the introduction of the harmonised prospectus, a lot of parents would have the opportunity to prepare their children for school.

“But the most important thing for the parents and all the prospective students to know is that if you are unable to be in school and begin your registration process, you are not losing your admission slot. There is still an opportunity for you, particularly when the academic activities are yet to start.”

In an interview with Angel FM on October 29, 2024, Roman Fada stated that he is prepared to step up as the party’s new flagbearer if legally necessary after the tragic death of Akua Donkor, the previous presidential candidate for the GFP.

“If the law says I should be the flagbearer, why not… I am ready to take up the mantle,” he stated.

He also expressed optimism about receiving support from his peers in the entertainment industry.

“Since I am an entertainment person, I hope I will get support from my colleagues in the entertainment field,” he said.

Unfortunately, her health deteriorated, prompting her emergency transfer to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (formerly Ridge Hospital) on Sunday, October 27. Tragically, she passed away at 10:00 PM on Monday, October 28.

Commuters stranded after heavy downpour at Airport Roundabout in Kumasi

A heavy downpour in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, has left hundreds of commuters stranded at the Airport Roundabout due to severe flooding in the area.

The rain, which lasted about 30 minutes, overwhelmed local rivers, causing them to overflow and creating hazardous conditions.

Reporting live from the scene, OTEC News reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng stated, “Hundreds of cars and commuters, unable to cross the swollen Pelele River, are parked along the road, waiting for the waters to recede.”

This flooding resulted in significant traffic congestion on major routes leading to the Airport Roundabout, forcing drivers from Sofoline, Kenyasi, Tech, and Asawase to seek alternative paths.

Residents interviewed by OTEC News cited inadequate drainage systems and poor waste management as key factors contributing to the recurring flooding.

“We’ve been experiencing this flooding for years. It’s time for the authorities to find a lasting solution,” one resident stated.

Another added, “The small drains can’t handle the rainwater. We need better infrastructure to prevent these floods.”

They urged authorities to take action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

  • Speaker Bagbin’s bid to challenge Justice Gaewu’s empanelment rejected by Supreme Court

Speaker Bagbin’s bid to challenge Justice Gaewu’s empanelment rejected by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has rejected an objection concerning the participation of one justice in the panel reviewing the case brought by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

This case challenges the court’s earlier ruling that voided Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, during the proceedings, lead counsel for the Speaker, Thaddeus Sory, objected to Justice Ernest Yaw Gaewu being part of the panel, citing his ties to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Sory argued that such connections disqualified Justice Gaewu from fairly presiding over the case.

The five-member panel, chaired by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, retreated to deliberate on Mr Sory’s objection before issuing a ruling.

The issue originated from Speaker Bagbin’s announcement on October 17, 2024, regarding the vacant seats, which prompted NPP caucus leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin to request a stay of the decision from the Supreme Court.

In response, Speaker Bagbin adjourned Parliament indefinitely and directed his legal team to challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The blaze erupted around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29, triggering an urgent response from emergency services.

To combat the fire and stop it from spreading, at least three fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

As reported by OTEC FM News, firefighters managed to control the flames effectively.

Hon. Emmanuel Atta Boateng, the Unit Committee Chairman for Nyankyerenease and a witness to the incident, revealed that the fire was ignited due to the improper handling of a gas cylinder within the household.

He recounted, “Amonoo Gyamfua, the homeowner, instructed her grandchild to warm water for her bath.

Sadly, the grandchild mishandled the gas cylinder while doing so, which led to the fire’s rapid spread.”

Fortunately, despite the significant damage to the home, Hon. Boateng assured that there were no casualties reported. The swift action of the fire service played a crucial role in limiting further destruction in the vicinity.

“Before we came into office, we promised that we would implement a free senior high school policy. At the time we made the promise, the then-president told us that we were deceiving Ghanaians. He said it was not possible. But I said that it was possible,”  he stated.

He recalled the NPP’s commitment to implementing a free senior high school policy, referencing skepticism from the previous administration.

As part of his campaign efforts, Dr. Bawumia resumed activities in Accra, touring key markets in the Ablekuma South and Odododiodoo constituencies.

If I could go back, I wouldn’t have married so soon – Akua GMB

A former winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, Sally Akua Amoakowaa, known as Akua GMB, has reflected on her decision to marry at a young age, expressing regret over her choices.

In a recent interview, she revealed that if given the chance to turn back time, she would not have tied the knot at just 22.

Akua GMB articulated her belief that she entered marriage too early, without having fully explored life or taken the time to understand herself.

“If I had had the opportunity to change something in my life ten years ago, I think it would have been me not getting married. I sometimes feel I got married too early. I got married at the age of 22.

“Then, I hadn’t discovered who I was. I hadn’t explored the world, and I didn’t know me. So, that decision, I think, wasn’t a good one for me”, she said.

As the CEO of Jewel Fashion, Akua GMB clarified that while she doesn’t discourage young women from marrying early, she emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and understanding the meaning of marriage.

“If the person thinks she knows who she is, she understands what she is getting herself into, she is ready for the task ahead, of course, why not? You can go ahead and get married”, she said.

After winning the 2011 Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, Akua GMB became the fourth wife of Dr. Kweku Oteng.

Their marriage lasted nearly eight years, ending in divorce in 2019, and they share three children together.

  • We are owed over GHS23m by Western Region customers – GWL

We are owed over GHS23m by Western Region customers – GWL

The Acting Chief Manager of Ghana Water Company Limited in the Western Region, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, has disclosed that the company is grappling with a substantial debt of over GHS 23 million owed by customers for water services.

This considerable financial burden is hindering the company’s capacity to ensure a consistent water supply to residents.

In an interview with Citi News in Takoradi on Tuesday, October 29, Mr. Barnie announced the launch of a revenue mobilization campaign aimed at recovering the outstanding amount.

He emphasized that this initiative is vital for maintaining the company’s water supply operations in the region.

“Currently, Ghana Water Company has a big issue of arrears owed by customers. Countrywide, we are owed in excess of GHS800 million and when you come to Western Region alone, the arrears are in excess of GHS23millions and that is a big problem for us,” he said.

Emphasizing the concerning situation, Mr. Barnie pointed out that the persistent non-payment of bills severely impacts the company’s operational capabilities, especially since it depends on imported materials for water treatment.

“Ghana Water Company at the moment is not a subverted organisation and so what we need to do in our day-to-day operations, we need to depend on the bills our customers pay us. Thus, we buy chemicals in foreign currencies, pipes, fuel our vehicles, maintain equipment breakdowns which happen frequently, pay salaries of staff and a lot more.

“All these require a lot of money, and that money comes from the bills customers pay. So if you have a customer who pays you just GHS300 out of a bill of GHS,1000, it means you’re not in good business,” he noted.

The Acting Western Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company announced that the company is launching an intensive revenue mobilization initiative to recover these outstanding arrears, which will include disconnections for defaulting customers.

“We are moving from house to house to collect bills that people owe us from now till December end. If we come to your house, we expect that you pay us what you owe us. It is not in our interest to disconnect a customer, so we want customers to pay their bills even before we get there,” he added.

Mahama poses 5 questions to ‘economic messiah’ Bawumia

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the upcoming Election 2024, has posed a series of probing questions directed at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mahama insisted that Bawumia respond to these inquiries, echoing his earlier demand for answers to 170 claims made by former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

During his recent tour of the Northern Region, Mahama criticized Bawumia for shifting his focus from economic issues to digitalization initiatives.

He argued that this transition signals a neglect of urgent economic challenges that require immediate attention.

“gbegbegbegbe about the economy,” however, “today he can’t mention ‘economy’, it is not in his vocabulary. Anytime he opens his mouth ‘digitalisation,” he added

In light of these concerns, Mahama has laid out several questions for Bawumia to address.

He wants to know why the exchange rate has reached GH¢17 to $1 and how Ghana’s national debt has surged from GH¢120 billion to GH¢767 billion in just eight years.

Mahama is also curious about the reasons behind the current inflation rate, especially considering it peaked at 54 percent during Bawumia’s administration.

Additionally, he questions why Bawumia borrowed GH¢42 billion from the Bank of Ghana, resulting in the Central Bank’s record loss of GH¢60 billion, and why he has stopped giving lectures on economic matters.

Former NSB Boss diverted GHS35m for personal gain – Attorney General

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has revealed that the former Director of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, is under investigation for allegedly misappropriating GH¢39 million from the agency’s funds.

Addressing the media on Monday, March 24, Dr. Ayine highlighted the scale of financial irregularities uncovered during the probe.

He alleged that Adu-Boahene and his wife personally benefitted from a suspicious transaction.

“GH¢35,462,480 million went into Adu-Boahene and his wife’s pockets from one transaction,” he stated.

The Attorney General further disclosed that efforts are underway to track down the couple and their assets. He assured the public that legal action would be taken soon.

“We are still tracking suspect Adu-Boahene, his wife, and their assets. In the coming days, we will file the necessary charges against them,” he affirmed.

The case has raised serious concerns about financial accountability within the NSB, as investigators work to uncover the full extent of the alleged embezzlement.

Meanwhile, Mr Adu-Boahene has yet to respond to the allegations leveled against them by the Attorney General.

Prior to A-G’s revelation, Mr Adu-Boahene was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) from London on Sunday, March 23.

According to reports, Mr. Boahene was taken into custody at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Thursday in a coordinated operation involving EOCO investigators and officials from the Attorney-General’s Department.

The operation was reportedly led by EOCO’s Deputy Director, Raymond Archer.

Bawku crisis is a sensitive matter, let’s stop politicising – Chieftaincy Minister

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has called on the residents of Bawku to focus on fostering calm and unity, urging them not to politicize the growing conflict in the region.

His appeal came during a media briefing on October 29, where he highlighted the government’s dedication to restoring peace amid ongoing unrest stemming from unresolved chieftaincy and ethnic disputes.

The minister’s call for unity follows a distressing incident on October 27, in which gunmen attacked travelers on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight individuals.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants questioned their victims before opening fire and also set two vehicles ablaze, heightening fears within the community and prompting urgent calls for government action.

Asamoah Boateng reassured the public of the government’s commitment to working impartially with all involved parties.

He stated,“I will implore all sides to stop the conspiracy theories going around and the blame games and keep calm and allow the government to deal with the security and chieftaincy issues therefore. No one should play politics with this sensitive matter and I will continue to engage my colleagues in the political arena from all sides to work with the government to resolve the current problems and work towards lasting peace in the area.”

Additionally, he called upon traditional leaders to avoid any actions that could escalate tensions, emphasizing “I strongly call on the traditional leaders from both sides to refrain from any act that will escalate the situation.”

Govt yet to reach an agreement with IPPs – Sunon Asogli

Independent power producer (IPPs), Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited has responded to allegations from the government regarding its recent decision to shut down its 560-megawatt power plant, following criticism from Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam.

In a statement released on October 16, the company explained that the closure was a necessary response to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) significant unpaid debt of $259 million, which does not include fuel costs, as of September 2024. The mounting debt has put substantial financial pressure on Sunon Asogli, making it challenging to sustain regular operations.

As a result of the plant’s shutdown, many areas in Ghana have faced extensive power outages, leading to unreliable electricity supply for communities.

In light of these disruptions, the government has acted swiftly to initiate negotiations with Sunon Asogli to restore stability to the national electricity grid.

Sunon Asogli clarified that the shutdown was driven by rising operational costs and a lack of sufficient working capital, rather than bad faith.

CEO of the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, voiced support for Sunon Asogli, asserting that the government’s failure to meet its financial obligations left the company with limited options.

The leadership at Sunon Asogli remains committed to finding a mutually beneficial solution to the debt issue while ensuring a reliable power supply for the nation.

“I am not aware when we have agreed to sign restructuring terms with anyone. We are still negotiating. No one goes into a negotiation to lose. It is always a win-win affair. And he [Amin Adam] has always maintained a position that if you will not accept this, I am not going to pay you. And even if we are signing, what it means is that we have reached a meeting point. But to the best of my knowledge, there is nothing like that. We are not there yet.

“He [the Finance Minister] has promised countless times to make payment to Sunon Asogli but he has not honoured those obligations or those promises. But today he’s saying that somebody is acting in bad faith. What is worse than that? You owe me about $259 million.

“Give me $60 million out of that for us to negotiate about the $2 million. And you are saying this is bad faith. We are faced with a challenge. We lack the working capital to resume operation or to continue operation.”

Govt imposes curfew in Bawku after renewed dispute

The Ministry of the Interior has implemented a nightly curfew in Bawku, Upper East Region, effective from October 28, 2024, due to a surge in deadly violence.

The curfew, lasting from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, follows an emergency session of the National Security Council chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to address the renewed tensions stemming from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

This recent wave of unrest was sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, whose presence has heightened the conflict, resulting in the tragic loss of at least eight lives and injuries in attacks, including an ambush on travelers.

In a statement, the Ministry of the Interior noted that Abagre’s presence posed a critical risk to peace, leading to the decision for a strict curfew.

Residents are urged to observe the curfew and cooperate with security personnel tasked with maintaining order.

Law enforcement has been mobilized to ensure full compliance, and the ministry has issued a warning that violators of the curfew will face legal action. These security measures aim to bring calm to Bawku and avert any further escalation of violence.

NPP is after me because I want to go independent – Cynthia Morrison

MP for Agona West, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has voiced concerns over what she describes as intimidation tactics from members of her own New Patriotic Party (NPP) after she chose to run as an independent candidate.

Her claims come in the wake of a recent shooting at one of her rallies, which left four people injured.

Among the wounded were Rasheed Haruna, Nasara Coordinator for Agona West, and the campaign chairman for NPP’s parliamentary candidate Chris Arthur, both of whom sustained gunshot injuries. Haruna was reportedly shot in the ribs, escalating tensions around Morrison’s independent bid.

In response, Chris Arthur alleged Morrison’s potential involvement in the attack—a claim she firmly denied during an interview on Citi FM on October 28, 2024, calling it unfounded.

“This kind of incident has never happened here before, and I believe they are trying to intimidate me because I chose to stand independently. But it will not deter me… they think I’m here to spoil their votes, but they have no idea I’m here to win,” Morrison asserted.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service issued a statement on October 28, 2024, committing to a thorough investigation into the incident. They assured the public of their dedication to ensuring security and bringing the culprits to justice as the election season intensifies.

The Founder and Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempeh, has once again declared his that the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, will emerge victorious in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

During a sermon to his congregation on October 27, 2024, Rev. Owusu-Bempeh scoffed at doubts regarding the validity of his prophecy, as well as assertions that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would have triumphed in the 2016 and 2020 elections without his predictions.

While he insisted he was not bragging, he asserted that the results of the 2024 election will reveal who the true man of God is in the nation.

“If you want to take someone’s position from him and you are a very deep person, there are things you ought to do. And so the people you are trying to challenge, they sound very funny when I hear them. I say this to the glory of God, I can even take what belongs to you, I know what I would do. But this time, it is not yours so leave it.

“You think we are always indoors doing nothing. You think after we have prophesied we go and sit with our hands between our thighs? No, we don’t do that. Those saying that without my prophecies, NPP would have still won the previous elections, who told you? Why did they not win in 2012, when there was no prophecy or in 2008? Why did they win in 2016 when I came in? At some point, you need divinity to excel,” he said in Twi.

He added, “I prophesied here that the NDC is going to win the upcoming election. I have prophesied and nothing can cancel this. We are all in this country called Ghana, we are all going to see who is powerful and has been blessed by God. I’m not saying this to brag but I’m saying it to the glory of the Lord.”

Police manhunt culprit in Agona West shooting incident

The Ghana Police Service has announced that they are actively seeking the individual responsible for a shooting that occurred during political campaign events in the Agona West Constituency on the evening of Sunday, October 27, 2024.

Four people were injured in the incident, with police reports indicating that two victims have since received treatment and been discharged, while the other two remain hospitalized.

The shooting transpired as supporters of Chris Arthur, a parliamentary hopeful from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were returning from a campaign launch in Otinkorang. The situation escalated when they encountered supporters of Cynthia Morrison, who were participating in a mini-rally at Agona Nyankrom, leading to the eruption of gunfire.

Among the injured was Haruna Rashid, Chris Arthur’s campaign manager, who was hit in the ribs and subsequently taken to Agona Swedru Government Hospital. Several other individuals sustained minor injuries during the chaotic scene.

Cynthia Morrison later issued a statement expressing her alarm over the incident, noting that she was unaware of the gunfire at the time adding, “I didn’t hear it myself and only learned of the incident afterward.”

In a follow-up statement on Monday, October 28, 2024, the police confirmed an increased presence in the area and detailed their efforts to apprehend the shooter.

“The police have been actively working on the case throughout Sunday night when the incident happened and are closing in on the perpetrator to get him arrested to face justice,” a police statement read.

  • Seizing unlicensed guns is key to preventing violence – Nana Yaa Jantuah

Seizing unlicensed guns is key to preventing violence – Nana Yaa Jantuah

A former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has voiced her deep concerns regarding a disturbing rise in gun violence among party members over the past two weeks.

In response to an alleged assassination attempt during a campaign event for Agona West parliamentary candidate Cynthia Mamle Morrison on Sunday, October 27, 2024, Jantuah lamented the unfortunate trend of private individuals wielding firearms just weeks ahead of the general elections.

While appearing as a panelist on JoyNews’ AM Show, she drew parallels between this latest shooting and the earlier Mataheko incident, where clashes between supporters of the two major parties, the NDC and NPP, led to gunfire and injuries among many NDC supporters.

Jantuah emphasized that such incidents are occurring with increasing frequency, posing a serious threat to the political atmosphere during this election season.

“I heard Cynthia Mamle Morrison was nearly assassinated and I don’t know how far it’s true. Some of the bullets caught her people on a campaign and this was a clash between the NPP and her group.

“I think it is a bit unfortunate. There was some incident at Mataheko where guns were shot between NPP and NDC supporters. Going into the elections we need to be very careful,” she said.

To prevent any significant violent incidents in the lead-up to the elections, Nana Yaa Jantuah suggested an immediate intervention by the Small Arms Commission.

She called for a concerted effort to retrieve firearms from private owners and urged action against individuals found to be unlawfully carrying weapons.

“I think the Small Arms Commission should go round to swoop in and try and get these arms in the hands of private people and deal with it. We cannot afford to go through this because it is becoming one too many and I believe we need to get the guns out of private hands,” she proposed.

Nana Yaa Jantuah emphasized that the increasing violence in politics contributes to the low participation of women in Ghanaian politics.

She explained that such incidents instill fear in women, making them hesitant to engage in political activities due to concerns about potential attacks from unscrupulous individuals.

She stressed the importance of addressing this issue, saying, “We must be vigilant and vocally oppose these trends. We cannot take the presence of guns in private hands lightly.”

Regarding the attack, several supporters of Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the independent parliamentary candidate for Agona West, were shot and injured by an unidentified assailant during a mini rally in Agona Nyakrom on the evening of October 27, 2024.

The incident occurred amidst a sudden power outage, and the victims are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Following the attack, Cynthia Mamle Morrison and her team rushed to the police station to report the incident.

Eyewitnesses suggested that the shots were fired by a man in a black campaign vehicle believed to belong to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate.

“The gun was fired from one of the campaign cars belonging to Chris (NPP Parliamentary candidate). As the car drove past, a young man hit the vehicle repeatedly. The driver stopped and got out, and as the young man who hit the vehicle tried to flee, the man fired the gun but it hit three people who sustained injuries,” a male eyewitness narrated to GHOne News Yaw Boagyan.

  • US tackles 2024 electoral manipulation in Ghana with visa ban restrictions

US tackles 2024 electoral manipulation in Ghana with visa ban restrictions

As Ghana prepares for its presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024, the United States Department of State has implemented a new visa restriction policy aimed at individuals who threaten the country’s democratic processes.

Announced on Monday, October 28, this policy will restrict U.S. visas for those engaged in actions that compromise Ghana’s democratic integrity. Notably, the restrictions are specified under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act and are directed at particular individuals rather than the broader Ghanaian public or government.

The U.S. emphasized Ghana’s democratic achievements, particularly its three decades of peaceful transitions of power. By enforcing these visa restrictions, the U.S. seeks to bolster Ghanaians’ aspirations for a fair, peaceful, and transparent electoral process.

This policy reflects Washington’s dedication to promoting democratic values globally and aims to prevent manipulation or violence in Ghana’s elections.

The restrictions will address any attempts to manipulate the electoral process, resort to violence, intimidate voters or political representatives, infringe on freedoms of association or assembly, or improperly influence the election results.

Moreover, some family members of those targeted may also be subject to visa restrictions. The U.S. remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving democratic integrity and warns that visa restrictions will be enforced on anyone found undermining Ghanaian democracy before, during, or after the 2024 elections.

President Akufo-Addo has lauded Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

He highlighted her role in boosting Ghana’s international profile and legacy.

At a ceremony welcoming her back from the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, the President commended her achievements and reaffirmed Ghana’s strong support as she begins her new responsibilities.

“She has done a ‘yeoman’s’ job as foreign secretary, chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, and several other important international assignments have been very well delivered by this young lady.

“So, coming back here, I knew we would meet something like this and I am very happy that all of you have come out in your numbers and met her and congratulated her.

“Let us all stand together behind her and push her to do a very good job for our country. She now flies the flag of Ghana on the global stage in a way which has not been done before since our late revered diplomate Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United States,” he stated.

The President encouraged Ghanaians to support her, stating,“Let us all stand united behind her and support her in this role. This is an opportunity for Ghana to impact the world stage significantly.”

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey’s selection as the first African woman to head the Commonwealth signifies a crucial turning point for Ghana’s diplomatic standing.

She is set to officially take office on April 1, 2025, succeeding Patricia Scotland.

You are the chosen one for the presidency – Kpassa Paramount Chief to Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has received an endorsement from Dr. Ubor Tossan Konja VI, the Paramount Chief of the Kpassa Traditional Area.

In a video shared by GhanaWeb on Monday, October 28, 2024, during Dr. Bawumia’s visit to the Oti Region, the chief expressed his firm belief that Bawumia is already destined to become the next president of Ghana. He further suggested that extensive campaigning is unnecessary, given this conviction.

“As for the election, you have already won. Your campaign tour is simply an opportunity to engage with the youth who may not yet know you as Ghana’s President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. There is no need for you to campaign because victory is already yours,” he said.

Dr. Ubor Tossan Konja VI voiced his concerns regarding the lack of developmental projects in the district, specifically highlighting the poor condition of the Damongo-Nkwanta Road and the absence of a district hospital.

He urged Dr. Bawumia to prioritize these issues and implement necessary improvements once he officially takes office as president of Ghana.

“We urge you to prioritise the development of our Damongo-Nkwanta Road, as this is a major concern for us. Additionally, we lack a district hospital where pregnant women and sick patients can receive treatment.

“Currently, they are referred all the way to Nkwanta or Tamale, which significantly impacts their health. Many of these women end up undergoing surgery and, tragically, some lose their lives. We appeal to you to address these issues once you are officially sworn in,” he appealed.

Ghana’s peace is my priority – Mahama

The former President of Ghana and current flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining peace in the country.

He underscored the vital importance of national stability and committed to ensuring that his party prioritizes its protection.

He said, “The peace and tranquillity of our country mean more to me than anything else. I solemnly commit to you that the party I lead will do all in our power to preserve the peace of our dear nation, Ghana.”

He further noted that many nations in the West African region look upon Ghana with envy due to its peace, emphasizing the need to safeguard this fragile state of harmony.

John Dramani Mahama highlighted that several countries in the sub-region, which are currently experiencing unrest, envy Ghana’s peace.

He stressed the importance of actively working to protect this delicate state of tranquility, comparing it to the fragility of an egg.

“My brothers and sisters in the Lord, Ghana is known for its peaceful religious coexistence. We’ve always been the envy of many countries in our sub-region where peace has eluded them.

“As we approach the elections, we should never forget that peace is fragile. Like an egg, once it is cracked, it cannot be put together again without the scars showing. We must never again unleash fatal violence on our people at polling stations, peacefully expressing their democratic rights to choose their leaders,” he said.

20 polling stations to receive extra ballots for 2024 elections – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that 20 polling stations will receive additional ballot papers for the 2024 elections.

This decision is intended to enhance ballot distribution and ensure that all voters have access during the election process.

According to a press release on Monday, October 28, this change follows thorough reviews by District Registration Review Officers (DRROs) and rulings by the High Courts aimed at resolving discrepancies in voter registration.

The adjustments stem from insights gained during the re-exhibition of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register.

This exercise allowed citizens and political parties to verify voter information and pinpoint potential errors.

The EC emphasized that these revisions reflect its commitment to transparency and collaboration in refining the electoral process.

“The Electoral Commission announces for the information of the General Public that, following the implementation of the decisions of the District Registration Review Officers (DRROs) and the High Courts as well as the revisions made after the Re-Exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register, there have been slight revisions to the 2024 Ballot Statistics submitted to the Political Parties and the Printing Firms.

“The Polling Stations for which printing of additional ballot booklets is required sum up to twenty (20). The schedule of affected Polling Stations is attached for the information of the General Public.”

“The revised ballot statistics including the affected Polling Stations have been given to the Political Parties, Independent Presidential Candidates and Printing Firms. The General Public is to take note accordingly,” the EC’s statement added.

Ghana Card has become a tool for tribal discrimination in Bawku – PC for Zebilla

The parliamentary candidate for Zebilla representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Krugu, has expressed serious concerns regarding the alleged misuse of the Ghana Card to identify individuals’ tribal affiliations amid the escalating conflict in Bawku.

In an appearance on the Citi Breakfast Show on October 28, Mr. Krugu stated that the Ghana Card is reportedly being misused to target individuals based on their tribal backgrounds, a situation he argues has resulted in tragic consequences.

He highlighted the overwhelming number of casualties at the Presbyterian Hospital in Bawku due to the ongoing violence, noting that attempts to transfer critically injured patients to Bolgatanga have been thwarted by blocked roads caused by the unrest.

Moreover, Mr. Krugu revealed that the conflict has also claimed the lives of individuals not directly involved in the main dispute, particularly from the Kusasi and Mamprusi groups, indicating that the violence has far-reaching effects beyond the primary factions.

His comments underscore the growing complexity and expansion of the conflict, which has intensified recently, raising significant security concerns throughout the region.

In response to the situation, there has been an increase in police and military presence in Bawku and its neighboring areas, aimed at preventing further escalation and restoring order.

“I am aware that people have not slept in the last two nights. It has been a full-fledged war ongoing and now you have a situation where two factional chiefs are living next to each other. Bawku is not a big town and each side is aiming at getting to the other person so you have an illegitimate chief who is sitting there and then you have the existing chief who is celebrating 40 years on the throne and then you have young men who are losing their lives.

“Last night, we got the message that there was no space to keep the injured at the Presbyterian Hospital, roads were blocked and you cannot carry the injured to Bolgatanga for treatment. The roads between Bolga and Tamale were blocked and people were being asked for their Ghana Cards to identify their tribal affiliation and to kill them.

“I am aware that some people who do not belong to the two tribes were mistakenly killed and this is a sad situation that we are having.”

Eight travelers tragically lost their lives when gunmen ambushed the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, on Sunday, October 27.

During the blockade, passengers were subjected to identity interrogations by the assailants. In this violent incident, around eight individuals were killed, and two vehicles were set on fire, raising serious security concerns in the region.

Bawku’s ongoing conflict claims life of 11-year-old girl

A resurgence of chieftaincy conflict in Bawku has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities, including that of an 11-year-old girl.

According to a report by Asaase Radio, the girl lost her life in her home on October 27, 2024. The renewed violence flared up over the weekend, with gunfire reported in various locations.

On the same day as the girl’s death, three individuals were shot near the Ghana Highways Authority office.

Local sources indicate that since the outbreak of shooting on October 26, the death toll has risen to approximately 15, with around 20 others sustaining injuries.

Some of the injured have been transported to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Efforts by security forces in Bawku to restore order are hampered by a shortage of personnel and inadequate resources. Reports suggest that the military units deployed in the region lack sufficient vehicles to respond quickly to the incidents.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service is struggling to manage the escalating violence that has spread across several neighborhoods due to a lack of resources.

I was prepared for my arrest in 2021 – Rt. ACP Benjamin Agordzo

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo has revealed that his arrest by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) did not catch him off guard.

In an interview with GHOne, he shared that prior to his detention, he received threats from a Minister of State following his candid views on civil unrest expressed in a WhatsApp discussion.

Mr Agordzo further stated that he challenged the Minister, asserting that if he disagreed with his opinion, he should proceed with his plan to sue him.

“I have mentioned after the judgement in certain interviews that I had been threatened by a Minister of State. I don’t need to mention his name again but I had been threatened on a platform that I as with him and I wasn’t surprised when I as invited. I have mentioned his name earlier and I have decided not to mention it again. And I had dared him to sue me if he thinks it is not true. The fact remains he had threatened me for sharing my opinion on a WhatApp platform,” he added.

In 2021, ACP Agordzo faced serious allegations related to a supposed plot to destabilize the nation, resulting in charges of conspiracy to commit high treason, abetment to high treason, and high treason itself.

The trial, which began on June 8, 2021, captured the nation’s attention due to its high-profile nature.

The prosecution, under the leadership of Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, presented a compelling case bolstered by testimonies from seven soldiers.

In contrast, the defense team, which included notable lawyers like Rita Akukunti Ali and Victor Kodjogah Adawudu, vigorously defended Mr Agordzo throughout the legal proceedings.

In a significant development in 2024, the High Court in Accra acquitted ACP Agordzo, ruling him not guilty on all charges.

His supporters, who had gathered in the courtroom, erupted in relief and celebration at the news of ACP Dr. Benjamin Kwasi Agordzo’s exoneration.

Court postpones hearing on Apea-Dankwah’s injunction against EC

The hearing of an injunction application filed by Samuel Apea-Dankwah, a disqualified presidential aspirant, has been postponed by the Accra High Court, now set for Thursday.

Following his disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Apea-Dankwah is pursuing a judicial review to contest the ruling. In his bid to prevent any EC activities related to the upcoming presidential election, he requested the court to issue a halt.

During the presentation of the injunction application on Monday, Apea-Dankwah’s legal team requested an adjournment to Thursday, explaining that they needed more time to respond to a motion filed by the EC opposing the injunction.

Although the court proposed to reconvene on Tuesday, Mr. Apea-Dankwah’s lawyers succeeded in pushing for a Thursday rescheduling.

After the proceedings, Mr. Apea-Dankwah spoke with Citi FM, revealing that his legal team has also submitted a request for the EC to provide documentation that outlines the criteria and decision-making process behind his disqualification.

  • IMF to approve $360m for Ghana on Dec 2 – Finance Minister

IMF to approve $360m for Ghana on Dec 2 – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has announced that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Board will convene on December 2, 2024, to review Ghana’s Third Programme.

This review could facilitate the release of $360 million to the Bank of Ghana, aimed at addressing the government’s budgetary and balance of payment needs.

The upcoming board meeting follows a staff-level agreement reached with the government earlier this month, coinciding with the IMF’s visit to assess data through June 2024. Dr. Amin Adam stated, “This disbursement by the IMF Board will bring the total funds received since Ghana signed up for the IMF programme to $1.92 billion”.

He shared this information at a press briefing in Washington, DC, during the Annual IMF/World Bank Meetings, emphasizing that Ghana has fulfilled all prerequisites for approvals and disbursements under the IMF programme.
    Economic Implications

Dr. Amin Adam expressed optimism regarding the forthcoming $360 million from the IMF, alongside an additional $300 million from the World Bank, which he believes will bolster Ghana’s reserves and help stabilize the Ghanaian cedi heading into the new year. He reassured businesses, stating, “The Bank of Ghana already maintains strong reserves, and these additional funds will position the Central Bank well to stabilize the cedi. There’s no need for businesses to worry about foreign exchange availability.”

He further emphasized that the significance lies not just in the funds from the IMF but also in the positive signal it conveys to investors about the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy.

The Finance Minister also highlighted the encouraging feedback from investor meetings in Washington, where participants expressed interest in Ghana’s economic reforms.

“We must remember that the Bank of Ghana already has strong reserves, and these additional inflows will put the Central Bank in a solid position to stabilize the Ghana cedi,” Dr Amin Adam added.

“There is no need for businesses to panic regarding the availability of foreign exchange to meet their demands.”

“For us, it’s not just about the funds coming from the IMF, but rather the signal it sends to investors that the government has taken the necessary steps to stabilize the economy,” the Minister explained.

Addressing concerns regarding the government’s economic management over the past four years, Dr. Amin Adam declared, “Ghana’s economy has strongly recovered compared to two years ago. We’ve seen tremendous progress in growth, exchange rate stability, and inflation.”

He added, “We have performed exceptionally well in managing the economy.”

Dr. Amin Adam welcomed the IMF’s updated growth forecast for Ghana, which has been adjusted from 3 percent to 4 percent for 2024.

He acknowledged that the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, based on data from mid-April 2024, anticipates improvements by year-end.

“We believe Ghana will exceed the revised 4 percent target due to recent investments starting to yield results,” he asserted, although he mentioned that the government will retain the original 3 percent growth projection in the 2024 Budget for the time being.

Vote for me and I will build Astroturf nationwide – Bawumia to Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced an ambitious plan to provide every district in Ghana with an Astroturf if he wins the presidency.

Highlighting the NPP government’s achievements under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia noted that the administration has built approximately 150 Astroturfs across the country, a significant increase from the mere three that existed in 2017.

During a recent campaign stop in Dambai, he promised to construct an Astroturf for the community and emphasized his commitment to expanding sporting facilities nationwide.

“In the next few weeks, we will be building an Astroturf for you at Dambai. From the way things are going, every district must have an Astroturf. When we assumed office in 2017, there were just three Astroturfs nationwide, but after eight years, we have increased that number to 150.

“When we come into power again, we will make sure the rest of the districts without one will get it,” he said in a video shared by GHOne TV on X.

As the December 7, 2024, elections approach, Dr. Bawumia continues to engage with communities to outline his policies and vision for Ghana.

  • UK court sentences 4 Ghanaians for smuggling £4.5m cannabis; two on the run

UK court sentences 4 Ghanaians for smuggling £4.5m cannabis; two on the run

Four Ghanaian men have received prison sentences for their involvement in smuggling 1.5 tons of cannabis valued at £4.5 million in the UK, following an extensive investigation.

Adjei, Yeboah, Bonsu, and Baidoo have been sentenced to four, five, seven, and ten years, respectively.

While Adjei and Yeboah were present at Southwark Crown Court for their sentencing, Baidoo and Bonsu absconded and are currently fugitives.
    Case Overview

The drug smuggling operation was uncovered thanks to intelligence shared between the Ghanaian Narcotics Control Commission and the UK’s National Crime Agency.

When border officers inspected a container at Tilbury Docks, they found 2,335 packages of cannabis hidden inside sacks of gari, leading to an estimated street value of £4.3 million.

In a strategic move, law enforcement replaced the actual drugs with a dummy package containing a tracking device. This allowed authorities to monitor the container’s movement to a North London industrial yard.

Yeboah signed for the delivery using a fake name, and workers at the yard used an angle grinder to open the container.

Meanwhile, Bonsu was spotted driving around the yard, taking pictures, while Adjei dropped Baidoo off at the location.

Upon discovering that the drugs were no longer in the container, the group fled in various vehicles, leaving the scene.

The police managed to track them down later that day, apprehending Yeboah and Adjei in Homerton, Baidoo in Stratford, and Bonsu in Edmonton.
    Investigation Findings

Further investigations led to significant discoveries at Baidoo’s home, where a 10-tonne hydraulic press—commonly used for compressing drugs—was found alongside multiple electronic devices, including mobile phones and dash cameras.

Dashcam footage from Adjei revealed that he contacted Baidoo and Yeboah right after the container’s arrival at the yard. During one conversation, he warned Yeboah, saying, “My brother, be a little watchful. It is all a little dodgy.” Yeboah, in turn, voiced concerns about the missing drugs, noting, “I don’t think the food [drugs] is in it,” and expressed frustration, stating, “they have removed most of the gari. The people are thieves.”

Additionally, Baidoo’s text messages and emails laid out his plans to receive the drugs at the yard, which he had rented under a false identity. Bonsu’s bank statements further revealed multiple payments made to a shipping company for transporting the container from Tilbury Docks to the North London yard.

During the ceremony, Regional Ministers will present awards to the honorees from their regions.

To facilitate participation, the Ministry has instructed that all expenses, including travel, accommodation, and meals for regional award winners, be covered by their respective Regional Coordinating Councils.

The primary goals are to eliminate schistosomiasis and manage soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections.

Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, announced the initiative during a media briefing in Accra.

He explained that eligible children will receive 600-milligram (mg) praziquantel and 400-mg albendazole medications.

These medications have been donated to the GHS by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and will be administered under the close supervision of specially trained school teachers and health workers.

“Preferably, medicines should be administered immediately after the first break or after children have been served food to ensure that all children have eaten. Therefore, all parents, guardians and caregivers should ensure their children eat before going to school,” he advised.

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye emphasized the importance of ensuring that all children eat before taking the medicines, as this will aid in the effective absorption of the treatment.

NPP is committed to enhancing lives of nursing students – NAPO

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has addressed nursing students at Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Accra, emphasizing the critical role their votes play in advancing initiatives like Agenda 111, the national hospital project.

He called on students to reject the idea of former President John Dramani Mahama returning to power, highlighting what he described as the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s mismanagement of nursing affairs.

Dr. Prempeh pointed out that the NPP’s reinstatement of trainee allowances reflects its commitment to nursing students’ welfare, contrasting it with the NDC’s previous elimination of these allowances, which he claimed created significant hardships for students during Mahama’s tenure.

He framed the upcoming elections as a choice between the stability provided by the NPP’s policies and the uncertainties of Mahama’s leadership.

“Like their colleagues at Korle Bu, they recognize the risk in returning to the leadership of a man who once cancelled their allowances and vowed not to restore them, even if it cost him the presidency.

“The 2024 elections, they believe, are about securing Ghana’s future. That is why they will place their trust in Dr. Bawumia, who will, after four years, return to account for his actions and decisions. In contrast, they fear a leader who will serve only four years and be free from accountability, could once again cut their allowances and impose harsher policies,” a report by citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

Dr. Prempeh also criticized the NDC’s handling of funding for nursing institutions, noting that the NPP had to deal with a two-year backlog of feeding grant arrears inherited from the Mahama administration.

He attributed these challenges to the NDC’s incompetence in managing vital services.

The event also featured remarks from Robert Lamptey, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Madina, and Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, the municipal chief executive, who echoed Dr.

NAPO’s message, urged students to support the NPP to sustain policies that benefit both the nursing community and the broader healthcare objectives of the nation.

We will win the elections to silence skeptics – Ofosu Nkansah

Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has expressed strong optimism regarding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances in the upcoming general elections.

In a post shared on Saturday, October 26, he emphasized the party’s determination to secure victory not only to govern the nation but also to address the doubts expressed by some party members.

His comments specifically targeted NPP Members of Parliament and candidates who have voiced concerns about the party’s electoral prospects.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Ofosu Nkansah deemed the skepticism unwarranted and cautioned that such doubts could undermine the morale of supporters and campaign teams.

He urged all party members to come together in solidarity, highlighting the NPP’s impressive track record and vision for the future of Ghana.

Ofosu Nkansah also pointed out the successes of the NPP-led government, particularly the NEIP’s efforts in promoting innovation and supporting entrepreneurs as testament to the party’s commitment to job creation and economic growth.

He argued that these achievements are crucial for gaining public trust and will ultimately showcase the NPP’s capability to lead effectively.

“You are MP/PC and you are telling people we will not win the election. No wonder you are not showing any seriousness in campaigning, You do this and blame others for your issues.”

“By the way, we are winning this election to shame people like you. Meanwhile, when we win such People will go lobbying for positions,” he posted.

Ghana’s coconut industry positioned for global market – Fmr deputy minister

Former Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture and current CEO of the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), William Quaitto, has emphasized the transformative potential of the new Tree Crops Regulations, 2023, at the fourth International Coconut Festival held in Accra.

Running from October 21 to October 23, 2024, the festival united industry leaders under the theme “The Tree Crops Regulations, 2023, empower our producers, processors, and traders to maximize their potential while ensuring quality and sustainability,” Quaitto remarked.

Mr Quaitto described the Tree Crops Regulations, officially titled L.I. 2471, as a critical tool to raise standards, streamline registration, and support the coconut value chain.

As Ghana’s coconut sector continues to grow, Quaitto voiced optimism about the regulations’ impact on fostering a globally competitive, sustainable coconut industry.

“These regulations are crucial for setting high standards and creating a competitive, sustainable coconut sector that can thrive in the global Bawumia promises ‘One District, One Modern Market’,” he said.

The Tree Crops Regulations, 2023, mandate industry registration and provide specific support services to registered members. Farmers gain access to quality seedlings, extension services, and innovative research, while aggregators can apply for licenses to source directly from producers. Registered processors benefit from export subsidies, inventory management, and investment funds.

The regulations require comprehensive documentation from applicants, including certificates of incorporation, environmental assessments, and tax compliance certificates. Licensing categories under the new regulations include plant multiplication, aggregation, and processing, with tax incentives to encourage local investment in processing equipment. This structured approach aims to boost industry standards, sustainability, and innovation.

The International Coconut Festival, co-organized by GEPA, the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), and the African Coconut Group (ACG), aimed to attract investment in the sector and offered networking and mentorship opportunities for youth and women. It gathered farmers, policymakers, researchers, and marketers, with exhibitions displaying a range of coconut products at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Ghana has become Africa’s leading coconut exporter and ranks 12th worldwide, producing over 500,000 metric tonnes annually. In 2022, the nation earned $15 billion from coconut exports, with revenue projected to reach $25.3 billion by 2029.

Govt pays GHS2.5bn debt owed SSNIT

The government has settled GH¢2.5 billion in bonds owed to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), as announced by Director-General Kofi Osafo-Maafo during a stakeholder engagement with pensioners in Kumasi.

He highlighted that, as of August, SSNIT had disbursed over GH¢3.7 billion in pensions to more than 250,000 retired workers nationwide.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo reaffirmed SSNIT’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the pension scheme, emphasizing its role as a vital lifeline that has consistently provided financial security and dignity to retirees since 1991, without any delays in pension payments.

SSNIT also projected a surge in enrolments under its Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED), which could attract up to 250,000 participants in the coming year.

Since its launch in May 2023, the SEED initiative has enrolled around 120,000 self-employed individuals as of September. The campaign aims to extend the National Social Security scheme to self-employed workers, allowing them to retire with security and dignity.

Chief Actuary Joseph Poku attributed the anticipated enrolment growth to the campaign’s rapid expansion, driven by the Operation-A-Thon (Ops-A-Thon) sensitisation tour, which has been actively raising awareness in major towns across the country.

As part of Ops-A-Thon, SSNIT staff have been visiting business hubs, markets, and streets in selected towns, distributing flyers and displaying placards to inform self-employed workers about the benefits of joining the SSNIT Scheme.

Awareness events have already been successfully held in locations such as Wa, Techiman in the Bono East Region, Koforidua in the Eastern Region, and Tarkwa in the Western Region.

15 illegal miners arrested by Dormaa anti-galamsey taskforce

The Dormaa Traditional Council’s Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has successfully apprehended 15 individuals, including two girls, suspected of engaging in illegal mining in the Dormaa East District of the Bono Region.

This operation, aimed at curbing the illegal mining trend, was initiated by Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs.

According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the arrests took place in the Akontanim community, where illegal mining activities have been increasingly reported.

Assembly Member Alhaji Inuse Luti confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects are now in police custody. Ongoing investigations will determine their forthcoming court proceedings.

“In fact, anybody who would be caught engaging in illegal mining would not be spared and would be made to face the full rigours of the law,” he warned.

Alhaji Luti emphasized that the District Assembly, traditional authorities, and various stakeholders are united in their commitment to combat illegal mining in the region, asserting, “we will continue to fight until the menace is eliminated”.

He dismissed rumors suggesting that some chiefs, unit committee members, and others were involved in illegal mining activities, praising Osagyefo Oseadeyo Badu II for his significant dedication to tackling this issue.

Luti also acknowledged the contributions of Kofi Agyemang, the Dormaa East District Chief Executive, and Nana Owusu Amponsah, the Chief of Kyeremasu, for their pivotal roles in curbing illegal mining in the area.

He underscored that the fight against illegal mining is a collective responsibility and urged the community to share any information about suspected illegal miners with the taskforce.

  • World Bank approves $260m to revitalize Ghana’s energy sector

World Bank approves $260m to revitalize Ghana’s energy sector

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has announced a landmark $250 million credit and an additional $10 million grant from the World Bank, dedicated to Ghana’s Energy Sector Recovery Program for Results project.

This agreement, signed in Washington, DC, is a notable milestone, marking the first such arrangement in over twenty years.

Part of Ghana’s broader Energy Sector Recovery Programme, the project targets improvements in the financial stability of the electricity distribution sector, expanded access to clean cooking solutions, and enhanced health and environmental outcomes.

Dr. Adam emphasized the urgent need to address significant distribution losses and low collection rates, which account for a 2% annual GDP deficit.

In his remarks, Dr. Adam noted, “It is in this connection that we continue to work with our partners, the World Bank, to frame important interventions in the energy sector. By enhancing revenue collection and operational efficiency, this project aims to stabilize the energy sector, which is crucial for promoting economic growth and attracting investments”.

Highlighting infrastructure priorities, Dr. Adam explained that efforts such as prepaid metering and advanced commercial management systems for distribution utilities are key to creating a resilient energy supply chain that supports Ghana’s industrial growth.

“Towards this, we have prioritised investments in infrastructure improvements, such as prepaid metering systems and enhanced commercial management for distribution utilities. These investments are designed to streamline operations and reduce costs, thereby contributing to a more robust energy supply chain that can better support industrial and economic growth,” he added.

With energy sector shortfalls amounting to about GHS18 billion ($1.2 billion) this year alone, he underscored the necessity for effective implementation and adherence to financial regulations to ensure the project benefits Ghanaian citizens.

Confident in the program’s potential, Dr. Adam expressed that achieving a financially sustainable energy distribution sector will drive Ghana’s medium-term growth goals, creating jobs, enhancing productivity, and stimulating further investments.

He concluded by thanking the World Bank and other development partners for their strategic collaboration towards Ghana’s sustainable development and brighter future.

  • Ghana will be vulnerable to terrorism if we don’t join forces with Burkina Faso – Ambassador

Ghana will be vulnerable to terrorism if we don’t join forces with Burkina Faso – Ambassador

Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Boniface Gambila Adagbila, has warned that without collaborative efforts to combat terrorism with Burkina Faso, Ghana risks becoming vulnerable to attacks.

His remarks come in response to a Reuters report alleging that Islamist militants are using northern Ghana as a covert base for logistical and medical support.

The report claims that these militants are crossing into Ghana to obtain essential supplies such as food and fuel, as well as medical treatment for injured fighters. It also suggests that local authorities might be ignoring these incursions to avoid potential threats to Ghana’s security.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Ambassador Adagbila dismissed these allegations, emphasizing the importance of supporting Burkina Faso in its ongoing battle against insurgents linked to groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. He noted that Burkina Faso has been enhancing its counter-terrorism strategies and urged travelers to follow proper procedures when crossing the border.

“Burkina Faso has been improving daily in its combating of terrorism, and we normally advise people not to move in anyhow but through the proper channels of traveling to and from Burkina Faso because you don’t know what can happen at any time,” he stated. “One of the objectives of these insurgents or terrorists is to take control of the world. Burkina Faso is between the Sahel and Ghana, so if we don’t support Burkina Faso to win the terrorism battle and the terrorists capture Burkina Faso, which country will be their next target? Logically, Ghana will be vulnerable to terrorism,” he told host Samuel Kojo Brace on Friday.

The ambassador underscored the gravity of the situation, noting that Burkina Faso has lost a considerable portion of its territory to these militants.

He called for regional collaboration, asserting that supporting Burkina Faso is essential for preventing the spread of terrorism into Ghana and neighboring countries.

His statements highlight the escalating threat of terrorism in the region and stress the necessity for Ghana to bolster its border security while actively engaging in counterterrorism initiatives with Burkina Faso.

“Burkina Faso, for us, is fighting terrorism, and we need to support them so that they can win that fight. Security-wise, we can be preventive and proactive,” he concluded.

While Ghana has thus far managed to avoid significant terrorist attacks, the potential for insurgency remains a serious concern.
