Aspirant for the position of flagbearer in the upcoming presidential primary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has reiterated his objection to the perception that the November 4th vote is being manipulated to favour a specific candidate.
Agyapong, who also serves as the NPP lawmaker for Assin Central, has made it clear that he is prepared to confront any party official, regardless of their level, who attempts to employ unethical tactics before the vote to select the party’s leader for the 2024 elections.
He specifically highlighted the recent resignation of former flagbearer aspirant and former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen. Alan resigned from the NPP on September 25th and subsequently announced his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 election.
One of the reasons cited by Alan for his departure was the perceived bias in the preliminary vote for the flagbearer position, in which he finished third, as well as alleged intimidation of his supporters.
“I am not Alan, who is so gentle. Let them try, and they will see what will happen. We will rescue Ghana, whether you like it or not. For the youth of this country, I will put my life on the line,” the firebrand MP blasted over the weekend at the ShowDown walk in Kumasi.
“That hooliganism they are exhibiting at the National Council: when Alan complained, he was insulted. When Boakye Agyarko complained, he was also insulted. I have also complained, and I am being insulted. But I am not gentle like Alan. They should try and see,” he warned.
Agyapong will compete with three other candidates for the NPP’s flagbearership, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-replacement Addo’s as party head will be chosen on November 4, 2023, according to the NPP.
