Dr Arikana Chihombora-Quao denounces ‘The Convention’ cancellation, calls for Africa’s mental liberation

In a press conference following the unexpected cancellation of ‘The Convention: Igniting the Voices of Africa,’ Dr Arikana Chihombora-Quao, accompanied by Patrick Loch Otieno Lulumba, Peter Obi, and Nana Kwame Bediako, addressed the media. Their intended message of empowerment for African youth was disrupted, leaving attendees disheartened.

Dr Chihombora-Quao emphasised the significance of the convention, expressing, “The world at large knows that Africa’s future is in the hands of our youth.” The New Africa Foundation had specifically requested their presence to deliver a message of hope, resilience, and unity to the gathered youth.

Despite the cancellation, Dr Chihombora-Quao remained resolute, asserting, “We intended to continue to preach the gospel of truth until we reach the promised land.” She expressed confidence in Africa’s ability to overcome current challenges, describing Africans as “beautiful, intelligent, sophisticated, highly adaptable, and totally indestructible human beings.”

Highlighting the critical issue of mental colonization, she stated, “The most dangerous person for Africa today is a colonised African,” urging a self-reflection on the impact of colonial education. Dr Chihombora-Quao lamented the lack of African-authored literature in educational systems and questioned, “What have we done to undo the colonial education?”

Drawing attention to the role of educated Africans, she criticised the elite for failing to challenge the status quo. “Our miseducation is leading us to the Africa that we are today,” she declared. The Berlin Conference and its ongoing impact on everyday life were underscored, urging Africans to stand up against exploitation, neo-colonization, and imperialism.

Dr Chihombora-Quao’s passionate call for mental liberation and the rejection of colonial education serves as a powerful rallying cry for Africans to challenge the status quo and reclaim their narrative.
