  • World Cup 2022: Black Stars are going to do everything to get something out of Portugal game – Andre Ayew

Black Stars captain Andre Dede Ayew has assured Ghanaians that the team will do everything possible to get a positive result in their 2022 World Cup opener against Portugal.

Black Stars, who are the lowest-ranked team at the tournament have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana take on Portugal on Thursday before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

“We know that in these big tournaments there are lots of surprises that can happen, so we just need to be ready,” the Al Sadd forward said at the pre-match presser.

“The Saudi game [vs Argentina] was great and marvellous, but we need to think about ourselves and not look at what somebody has done.

“And we will prepare for our game, which we are going to do everything to get something out of it.”

Ghana are making a record 4th World Cup appearance in Qatar having previously played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup takes place between November 20 and December 18, 2022.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year’s tournament.

Black Stars exited the group stage at the 2014 edition in Brazil after a slow start to the tournament.

  • World Cup 2022: Portugal defender Nuno Mendes misses training ahead of Ghana showdown

Portugal defender Nuno Mendes has failed to train ahead of their 2022 World Cup opener against Ghana due to exertion myalgia.

The PSG player, who is Portugal’s preferred left-back, has not trained in two days and is a doubt for Thursday’s match in Doha.

The Black Stars who are returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018 has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

Portugal will open their account the African giants before they face South Korea and Uruguay respectively on Thursday at the Stadium 971.

  • World Cup 2022: Ghana’s opponent South Korea tours Education City Stadium ahead of opener against Uruguay

Ghana’s 2022 World Cup opponent South Korea has toured the Education City stadium ahead of their opener against Uruguay.

The Asian giants will open their account against the two-time World Cup winners on Thursday, November 24 at 10am.

Ahead of the clash, the Korean national soccer team visited the stadium that will host their opening group game.

Coach Paulo Bento, coaching staff, and players went out to explore the stadium wearing comfortable training clothes and sneakers.

Players gathered in twos and threes to walk on the ground and check the condition of the grass by touching it before their first game.

Reacting to the condition of the pitch, Hwang In-beom, who plies his trade for Olympiacos said, “The grass is very good. The training ground is a bit hard, but it feels softer than the training ground.”

Kim Moon-hwan of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors also showed satisfaction, saying, “The grass is so nice and it seems perfect for playing. It’s similar to a training ground, but it feels a little softer.”

Baek Seung-ho (Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors) was also satisfied with the condition of the stadium, saying, “It may change depending on how the teams playing in front of us play, but the current state is so good.”

South Korea has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana.

  • How referee for Ghana vs Portugal match showed 2 Ghanaian players red cards in one match

The American referee, Ismail Elfath, who will officiate Ghana’s game against Portugal at the 2022 World Cup, is a no-nonsense man.

Five years ago, he gave two Ghanaian players of Columbus Crew two red cards in their 3-0 defeat to Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer.

The Columbus Crew, who had three Ghanaian players in their squad for that match, saw two of their players, Jonathan Mensah and Lalas Abubakar, get red cards in the game.

Jonathan Mensah, a former Black Stars defender, was the first to take an early shower in the game in the 35th minute when referee Ismail Elfath showed him a red card for bringing down C.J Sapong of Philadelphia Union.

Another Ghanaian player for Columbus Crew, Lalas Abubakar also faced the wrath of referee Ismail Elfath, as he got a red card after picking up a second yellow card 14 minutes to full-time.

The decisions of referee Ismail Elfath was heavily criticized by Columbus Crew manager Gregg Berhalter after they lost the game by 3-0 defeat to Philadelphia Union in MLS in 2017.

Five years after the incident, referee Ismail Elfath has been appointed by FIFA to handle Ghana’s first game at the 2022 World Cup against Portugal.

The Black Stars take on the Selecao of Portugal in their opening match of the tournament at the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium on Thursday, November 24, at 4pm.

Ismail Elfath will be assisted on the sideline by Kyle Atkins and Corey Parker as assistants with Stéphanie Frappart from France as the fourth official.

Elfath officiated his first match in 2011 and has since become one of the most respected match officials. He has won the MLS Referee of the Year award twice in the past three years. He officiated the semi-final of the 2019 Club World Cup.

Out of a total 264 matches, Elfath has issued 952 yellow cards, 65 red cards and has awarded 83 penalty kicks.

  • World Cup 2022: Portugal’s Ronaldo motivated and focused ahead of Ghana clash – Bernardo Silva

Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva downplayed tension around the national team ahead of Ghana clash on Thursday.

The Black Stars will play the European giants in Group H opener at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars who are returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018 has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner and all-time top international goalscorer in men’s football lashed out at his club Manchester United and coach Erik ten Hag earlier this week when speaking to TalkTV.

But Silva who plies his trade for Manchester City has refused to comment about the issue, saying Ronaldo is motivated and focused ahead of the group opener.

“The news from England has nothing to do with the national team,” said Silva.

“It also has nothing to do with me, so I won’t comment. I’m not a Manchester United player, even if I were, I wouldn’t answer. They’re a rival club, it’s nothing to do with me.”

However, repeatedly asked about Ronaldo and whether there was any tension in the camp after he appeared to share a frosty interaction with club teammate Bruno Fernandes, Silva responded.

“I don’t see any strange atmosphere in our team between Cristiano and another player,” he said.

“It is his matter that he has to resolve individually with the right person.”

“I see a motivated and focused Ronaldo, like everyone else, and he is another player here to help our country and the national team.

“There is a lot of talk about this topic, but we have a World Cup to play. I don’t understand the persistence because there is nothing there.”

Portugal shone in their 4-1 win over Nigeria without Ronaldo, but Silva said it was normal that the team could function well without their talisman.

“He’s part of the team, obviously, but when he’s not there, we know how to respond. Whenever he wasn’t there, we responded well. We’re ready.

“There are 26 of us, it doesn’t matter if it’s one person or another (playing).”

  • Laporte confident Spain have the tools to go all the way in Qatar

Aymeric Laporte is confident that Spain have the ability to fight for glory at Qatar 2022 despite falling short of expectations at each of the last two World Cups.

The 2010 champions begin their campaign against Costa Rica on Wednesday, with a tough test in Group E also putting them alongside Germany and Japan.

After victory in South Africa, Spain were eliminated at the group stages four years later in Brazil and lost at the round-of-16 stage to host nation Russia in 2018.

Brazil and Argentina have been tipped as the favourites for glory at this instalment, though Spain are considered among the teams going for glory in Qatar and Laporte is confident Luis Enrique’s side have everything required to go all the way.

“All the teams have their strengths, we have an amazing squad, the big majority [of players] compete at the top level in the Spanish league, in England or other places,” he told a press conference on Monday.

“We have people very well placed in football, quality, with this boss we are working very well on a tactical leveI. I believe we have everything.

“Then, in these type of games or tournaments, you need luck and there are other factors to be taken into account. But on what depends on us, we will do everything to win.”

Laporte was also asked about the injury suffered to France striker Karim Benzema, who has been ruled out of competing at the tournament, which he says is disappointing for the fans.

“In this type of tournament we expect the best to be competing, or many of them,” he added. “It is a shame for fans to not see all the best players in the world fighting each other, but those who remain here have a goal and we are going for it.”

  • World Cup 2022: Moussa Ndiaye called up to Senegal squad as late injury replacement for Sadio Mane

Anderlecht defender Moussa Ndiaye has been called up as a late addition to the Senegal World Cup squad after Sadio Mane was forced to withdraw because of injury.

Mane was replaced in the 15th minute by Leroy Sane after going down and headed straight down the tunnel for further treatment after being substituted.

He is a key cog of Aliou Cissé’s side, who face the Netherlands in their opening Group A game on November 21 before taking on hosts Qatar, then Ecuador at the World Cup.

Mane scored Senegal’s winning penalty in the shootout victory over Egypt to clinch their first Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year.

Ndiaye has been part of Senegal’s Under-20 & Under-23 teams but has never been called into the senior national team.

Senegal will take on the Netherlands on Monday in their 2022 World Cup opener before playing hosts Qatar and then ending their Group A campaign against Ecuador.

  • FIFA earns record $7.5bn revenue for Qatar World Cup

FIFA has earned an unprecedented $7.5bn in revenue through four years of commercial deals tied to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the governing body of football says.

The earnings, which FIFA revealed on Sunday to officials from more than 200 of its member nations, are $1bn more than what the organisation pulled in from the previous World Cup cycle leading up to the 2018 event in Russia.

The extra income was buoyed by commercial deals with this year’s hosts. Qatar Energy joined as a top-tier sponsor, and new third-tier sponsors include Qatari bank QNB and telecommunications firm Ooredoo. FIFA also added second-tier sponsor deals this year from financial platform crypto.com and blockchain provider Algorand, its first new American sponsor in more than a decade.

Key broadcast deals for this year’s World Cup were signed during Sepp Blatter’s presidency in two-tournament deals for the Russia and Qatar events. They included deals with Fox in the United States and Qatari broadcaster BeIN Sports from 2011.

FIFA pays for host countries’ organising committees, prize money, travel and accommodation for teams and support staff. It also pays for a legacy fund to help develop the sport in the host country after the World Cup circus has left town.

The winners of the Qatar World Cup will receive $44m out of a total prize pot of $440m.

FIFA organises its accounts in four-year cycles around each World Cup. For the 2015-2018 cycle leading up to the Russian World Cup, the governing body brought in $6.4bn. It has used that cash to help member bodies through uncertainty in 2020 when national team football and World Cup qualifying games were almost entirely shut down.

The organisation’s revenues are likely to approach $10bn for the next four years, thanks to a new financial strategy for women’s football and the expanded 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico, which will see 48 teams compete for the first time, up from the present 32.

FIFA has an almost blank slate for the 2026 edition with top-tier sponsors Coca-Cola, Adidas and Wanda the only deals currently extended. Separate sponsor deals for women’s football are being signed for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

  • World Cup 2022: I am convinced about Black Stars chances – Asamoah Gyan

Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan says he is convinced about Black Stars‘ chances at the 2022 World Cup that kicked off on Sunday.

The West African country who missed out on the last edition hosted in Russia in 2018 has made a return to the biggest football stage.

Ghana, who are four-time African champions have been housed in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.

Despite the difficulty and with many tipping to exit the tournament at the group phase, Gyan, who is the country’s all-time leading goal scorer says the Black Stars who have the youngest squad will make an impact.

According to him, he is convinced about the chances of the team.

“I played in 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cup, and we always came up against the best teams but we were still able to beat them so I’m confident about Ghana’s chances,” Gyan, who is doing punditry said on SuperSport.

Ghana will open their campaign against Portugal on November 24 at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Four days later, the Black Stars return to action with a clash with South Korea at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Ghana will wrap up their group stage adventure with their much-anticipated encounter with Uruguay at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.

  • Vinicius feared ‘dirty’ challenges would end his World Cup dream

Vinicius Junior feared he would miss Brazil’s World Cup campaign through injury after being targeted by “dirty” challenges in the build-up to the tournament.

The Real Madrid winger has contributed to nine goals in LaLiga this season (six goals, three assists) – a tally only bettered by Robert Lewandowski (17) and Borja Iglesias (10).

Vinicius has also won 16 senior caps for Brazil after making his international debut in 2019, emerging as a key part of Tite’s team ahead of the tournament in Qatar.

With the mid-season scheduling of the World Cup being criticised after several big-name players including Sadio Mane and Paul Pogba were ruled out through injury, Vinicius says both he and team-mate Rodrygo were targeted with unsavoury challenges by opponents.

“What happens on the field stays on the field, but it went too far,” Vinicius told Reuters.

“You can come strong, but they were being dirty with their challenges. Rodrygo and I suffered a lot in those last games and feared the worst, to get injured and miss the World Cup.

“When you start to become an important player, rivals come after you harder. You have to learn to deal with that.

“I learned a lot from Neymar when he played for Barcelona, he suffered a lot too. Cristiano [Ronaldo], when he played for Real, suffered a lot too.

“But it was Karim [Benzema] who told me to stay calm and have peace of mind, because if the rivals are chasing you it is because you are relevant, because they are afraid of you.

“So that’s why when I take the ball and burst forward, I do it with a vengeance. Yes, I can get hurt. But I’m prepared for the challenge.”

Brazil get their quest for a sixth World Cup under way when they face Serbia on Thursday, looking to defend a fine group-stage record at recent editions of the tournament.

The Selecao are unbeaten in their last 15 World Cup group games, winning 12 (D3), with their last such defeat coming against Norway in 1998.

  • World Cup 2022: We are capable of hurting any opposition – Ghana coach Otto Addo

Ghana coach, Otto Addo, has admitted that they are in a tough group but his side is capable of beating any opposition ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

The Black Stars, who are making their fourth appearance at the Mundial are hoping to make history after exiting the group phase in 2014 in Brazil.

Ghana’s best performance came in 2010 where they played in the quarterfinals.

After missing out in the last edition in 2018 in Russia, Addo, who masterminded Ghana’s return to the Mundial says his team can cause an upset should they progress from Group H, where they are pitted against Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.

“Everything is possible. As I’ve said, we have three strong opponents in our group. If we don’t perform as we need to, or if we’re not able to implement our tactics then it’ll be very difficult,” he told FIFA in an interview.

“Especially because Portugal, Uruguay, and the Korea Republic are very strong opponents with qualities on and off the pitch.

“It will be difficult to compete with them but, as I’ve said, we have the quality to beat them. If we progress from the group, anything is possible,” Addo, who also serves as Borussia Dortmund’s talent coach added.

The Black Stars wrapped up their preparation with a 2-0 win over Switzerland on Thursday in Abu Dhabi with Mohammed Salisu and Antione Semenyo scoring the goals.

The 22nd edition of the Mundial has been scheduled to kick off on Sunday, November 20 to December 18.

  • Osey – The official World Cup cheer song for Black Stars

The Kentos Music Band with the blessing of the Ministry of Youth and Sports has released the official cheer song for the Black Stars.

Dubbed “Osey” the song is to whip up support for the Stars ahead of the games at Qatar, which commences on November 20. It will be the Stars official song for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Kentos Band wrote and arranged the beautiful composition – a simple and catchy melody admonishing the Black Stars to bring the much-coveted trophy home.

Although Kentos Band is usually known for its electrifying live performances, this project allows them to explore much more and contribute to a national cause. This equally adds to the band’s weight of excellence in contemporary African music. What makes the project special is the quality of Kentos Band to incorporate the brass band music into contemporary styles, which they achieved with “Osey.”

The entire project includes the song and a video featuring legendary former Black Star players like Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan, Laryea Kingston, John Paintsil and Derrick Boateng, and is sponsored by Torrid Global Limited. As an oil marketing company operating in Ghana, this offers Torrid the opportunity to support a worthy social cause.

The support from Torrid Global reflects the organisation’s commitment to corporate social activities that contribute to national unity and patriotism. Equally, the contribution of the former Black Stars is a strong factor in reiterating the purpose of the project which is aimed at supporting the team they used to play for.

Kentos Band believes that “Osey” would indeed be the sound with which fans cheer the stars in this World Cup season.

At the launch of the official song and music video, the Minister of Youth & Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, admonished Ghanaians to cheer the Stars on to bring the coveted trophy home as admonished in the cheer song.

  • Giroud says France must replace Pogba’s leadership at World Cup

Olivier Giroud highlighted the importance of replacing Paul Pogba’s influence on the France squad ahead of their bid to defend the World Cup.

Having lifted their second World Cup in 2018, France are considered one of the main contenders to emerge victorious in Qatar, though injuries to Pogba and other key players could harm their chances.

Pogba has not made a single competitive appearance since returning to Juventus in July, and was ruled out of the tournament after undergoing delayed surgery on a knee injury.

The midfielder, who scored in the World Cup final against Croatia four years ago, will be joined on the sidelines by N’Golo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe and Christopher Nkunku, and Giroud believes it is time for other players to assume senior roles.

“We will miss Paul Pogba a lot, like Kante and Kimpembe,” Giroud said on Thursday.

“Paul takes up a lot of space in this France team with his personality, but I am convinced that there are other young leaders who can emerge.

“I too will play my role of big brother for the youngest, be available for them, and speak up when necessary.”

With 49 goals in 114 international appearances, Giroud is second in France’s all-time goalscoring charts behind Thierry Henry (51), and is also his country’s fifth-most capped player.

Giroud arrives at his third World Cup in fine form after scoring nine times for Milan this season, and will delay any decision regarding his international future until after the tournament.

“I feel good physically, in my game, in my club and in the France team. It’s a period of splendour for me. It’s a gift to feel like this at 36,” Giroud said.

“I don’t set myself any limits, it could be my last competition, but I don’t want to announce anything. We’ll see after the World Cup. My motivation to stay at the highest level is intact.”

  • ‘You spoil there’ – Mohammed Kudus showers praises on Afriyie Barnieh after Switzerland performance

It appears Daniel Afriyie Barnieh did not only win Ghanaians over with his performance against Switzerland but his Black Stars teammates as well.

Barnieh, who is one of two local players in Ghana’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup delivered an unforgettable performance in his first start for Ghana.

His gliding runs down the right side for Ghana in the first half created headaches for the Swiss defence who struggled to deal with the former Under-20 forward.

Barnieh created a number of chances and could have earned Ghana a penalty had the centre referee spotted the tripping of him by Eray Comert.

Mohammed Kudus cut into a post-match interview to commend Afriyie Barnieh for his excellent performance in the game.

“Chaley, today you did well. I really enjoyed your performance” he said while patting the back of Afriyie Barnieh who was speaking to Joy FM in a post-match interview.

Reacting to his incredible display against Switzerland, Barnieh credited the technical team of the Black Stars for impacting his play.

The 21-year-old claims he was under no pressure and was determined to perform and justify his place in the team.

“I feel good with my debut. It was a good game and there was no pressure. I stuck to what the coaches said and everything went well for me”, he said.

The Black Stars wrapped up preparations for the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Switzerland on November 17, 2022.

Centre back Mohammed Salisu and forward Antoine scored in the second half to give Otto Addo’s side a big victory over the Swiss.

Barnieh and his Black Stars teammates will hope to have a great tournament when the World Cup kicks off on November 20, 2022.

The Black Stars begin their journey against Portugal before facing South Korea and Uruguay in Group H.

    5. Ghana vs Uruguay game- December 3

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Black Stars first-choice goalkeeper Joseph Luke Wollacott has suffered a fresh injury on Saturday in the English League One game away at Burton Albion FC.

The Ghanaian international picked a finger injury during the warm-up as Charlton drew 3-3 away from home in the league.

With just eight days to the start of the 2022 World Cup, the goalkeeper could be racing against time to recover and play for Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar.

“He’s a really level-headed guy, Jojo. He was disappointed before the game and frustrated by it. I don’t think he was in a position to be on the bench so we made the decision to put an extra outfield player on.”

The Ghanaian pulled out of the pre-game warmups due to the injury and will have a scan to determine its extent later on Saturday night.

FIFA has finalized plans that will enable Israelis and Palestinians to attend matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which gets underway on 20 November.

This follows a meeting with representatives from FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22), the operational arm for tournament delivery, and from Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture and Sport conducted by Qatar’s commitment to FIFA’s hosting requirements.

Direct charter flights will be temporarily operated between Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and Hamad International Airport in Doha by an airline with existing landing rights in Qatar for the duration of the FIFA World Cup, subject to Israel’s security requirements and operational capabilities. More details will be announced in due course. Visitors will need a registered Hayya (the fan ID required for entry into Qatar during the tournament) and a valid flight ticket to travel to and from Qatar.

Consular services for Israeli citizens will be provided in coordination with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a designated privately-operated international travel company based in Doha. Palestinians will have access to consular services at the Palestinian embassy in Doha.

Commenting on the announcement, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “We are delighted that an agreement has been reached for Israeli and Palestinian fans to visit Qatar and attend matches during the FIFA World Cup. With this deal, Israelis and Palestinians will be able to fly together and enjoy football together. I would like to thank our Israeli, Palestinian and Qatari counterparts for helping to make this happen. Football has the power to bring people together, it transcends all boundaries, crosses all borders, and fosters unity like nothing else. • 2022 World Cup: Suarez and Cavani part of squad to represent Uruguay

Veteran strikers Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will have their fourth consecutive World Cup, headlining Uruguay’s squad announcement on Thursday.

Cavani, 35, was considered in doubt due to a recurring ankle injury, which has seen him complete a full 90 minutes just once this LaLiga season for Valencia.

Following that 90-minute performance, he was withdrawn just 18 minutes into Valencia’s following game against Barcelona on October 29, and is yet to return.

Suarez, who is also 35, played in both September friendlies, contributing an assist in a 2-0 win against fellow World Cup qualifiers Canada to indicate he is still at the required level, despite playing his club football for Nacional in the Uruguayan First Division.

While the seasoned strike partnership will provide experience, Uruguay’s squad also has a strong mix of younger emerging talent, headlined by 24-year-old Real Madrid star Federico Valverde.

Cavani and Valverde lead an impressive group joining the squad from LaLiga, which includes centre-backs Ronald Araujo from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez.

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri are the squad’s only Premier League representatives, while Napoli’s Mathias Olivera, Roma’s Matias Vina and Lazio’s Matias Vecino represent Serie A.

Uruguay begin their campaign on November 24 against South Korea, before facing Portugal on November 28 and wrapping up Group H against Ghana on December 2.

We went there and played a formation and system which gave us the qualification,” he said on Peace FM as monitored by footballghana.com

“He has plotted his formation and system he will use at the World Cup. When you analyze his second half is always good. It tells you that at least he can read the game and change things. Left to me we should have faith in him he should select players that are strategically fit to his system he wants to play,”

“When he goes and the team doesn’t perform if they know how to play we always know how to watch. If we see that what he is doing is not good then we can question him but those he will select that is not our area,”

  • Qatar Doha Qatar unveils 6,000 cabin World Cup fan village near airport

This satellite photo from Planet Labs PBC shows the Fan Village in Doha, Qatar, Oct. 16, 2022. Qatar on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022, unveiled a 6,000-cabin fan village in an isolated lot near its airports, an offering for housing toward the lower end of what’s available for the upcoming World Cup just days away from starting.

Qatar on Wednesday unveiled a 6,000-cabin fan village in an isolated lot near its airports, an offering for housing toward the lower end of what’s available for the upcoming World Cup just days away from starting.

As journalists toured the cabins, desert winds kicked up sand at the 3.1 square-kilometer (1.1 square-mile) site, which housed a metro station, a bus stop, and a planned temporary restaurant and convenience store. The area could in theory hold as many as 12,000 people if booked at capacity, officials said.

Artificial green grass coveredare the walkways outside, with common areas filled with large bean-bag style chairs under a gray sky Wednesday. Competing nations’ flags flapped in the strong desert wind, a large screen also present at the site for fans to watch matches. Workers milled about the site, checking on its final touches.

The brightly colored cabins, each with thin walls, are designed to hold one or two people with twin beds, a nightstand, a small table and chair, air conditioning, a toilet and a shower inside.

Each will go for around $200 a night — $270 with board — as the tournament goes on. Some 60% of the cabins are already booked for the tournament, said Omar al-Jaber, the head of accommodation at Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy for the tournament.

There will be other rooms offered at $80 a night farther out than this site near Doha International Airport and Hamad International Airport, both of which will be seeing flights at all hours during the tournament. Planes rumbled overhead during the visit Wednesday.

Those staying at the Fan Village can expect a 40-minute commute to stadium sites.

“Most of the fan(s) they prefer if it’s not a hotel, they prefer the apartment and villa,” al-Jaber said, noting those options are managed by French hospitality company Accor. However, those wanting budget accommodation will come to this site and the other for cheaper options, he said.

In the lead-up to the tournament, concerns about hotel room space and high prices for the rooms available have trailed Qatar, which lacks hotel capacity for all teams, workers, volunteers and fans at the World Cup. So Doha has created camping and cabin sites, hiring cruise ships, and encouraging fans to stay in neighboring countries and fly in for games.

Qatar has estimated it will have 130,000 rooms per day for the tournament.

Already, nearby Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has planned for an influx of World Cup fans who want to stay there where their money may go further.

“Now, the shuttle flights option, it’s one of the options for the people who stay already in our neighbor countries and … they would like to just to spend a day for to attend the match,” al-Jaber said. “So this is a good option for them in a state of their case.”

He added: “If they would like to come and stay, they are more than welcome, of course, and there is a many, many options for them.”

There are still multiple options available for fans in Qatar available to rent, ranging from hotels, cruise ship rooms, traditional dhow sailing vessels and tents, the fan village, porta cabins and caravans. al-Jaber said.

“We have enough accommodation and people still they can come and enjoy the tournament and of course they can choose what they are looking for from the accommodation,” he said.

  • Senegal striker Sadio Mane to miss 2022 World Cup due to injury

Senegal forward Sadio Mane will miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar because of an injury he sustained in Bayern Munich’s 6-1 victory over Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Mane was replaced in the 15th minute by Leroy Sane after going down.

The 30-year-old headed straight down the tunnel for further treatment after being substituted.

It comes just 12 days before Mane’s Senegal play their first game at the 2022 World Cup against the Netherlands.

  • Mourinho backs Volpato decision to snub Australia World Cup spot

Cristian Volpato’s decision on his international allegiance is a personal one that “should not be sped up”, Roma head coach Jose Mourinho has said.

With the 18-year-old scoring two goals and contributing one assist in just 106 minutes of Serie A football for Roma, a fierce battle for Volpato’s services at international level has emerged.

Born in New South Wales, Volpato is also eligible to represent Italy and has featured at youth level for the European side.

Australia had hoped the lure of World Cup football, with the Socceroos tackling France, Tunisia and Denmark in Group D in Qatar, would persuade Volpato to select his country of birth – with European champions Italy not qualifying for the tournament.

However, Volpato rejected the call-up, not wishing to rush into a decision, and Mourinho believes it was the right call.

“I think it is a personal decision and the club has not been involved. As a coach, for example, I would refuse to call up a player, even a young one, in a situation like that,” he said in a press conference.

“What I understand is that he is at the beginning of his career and that he’s growing with Roma by getting more minutes in consecutive matches.

“It’s not like last year where he played just one game against Verona and then he didn’t play again, I think he has now played four games in a row.

“He is in a development phase where I think he has to focus on building his future and not on certain decisions where maybe someone else wants to accelerate a process that should not be sped up.”

Volpato used social media on Wednesday to issue a comment on the matter.

“I’ve seen lots of speculation about decisions I have supposedly taken at international level: the truth is I am just at the start of my professional career and I am totally focused on continuing that process at Roma,” he posted on Instagram.

“Making any sort of rushed decision about my international future at this early stage risks being extremely premature.

“There will be plenty of time for me to make the decision that feels right for me, but right now I know my focus needs to be continuing to work hard each and every day in order to continue improving as a player.”

The Senegalese has been left injured following Bayern Munich’s league game on Tuesday, November 8.

Mane went down on 15 minutes and had to be replaced by Leroy Sane.

It comes just 13 days before Mane’s Senegal play their first game at the 2022 World Cup against the Netherlands.

Bayern, meanwhile, cruised to victory with Serge Gnabry scoring a hat-trick.

However, French newspaper, L’Equipe reports the Senegal starman will not be available for the Mundial to be staged in Qatar.

  • FIFA 23 predicts Argentina to win 2022 World Cup trophy

EA Sports has used FIFA 23 to predict the outcome of the 2022 World Cup.

Argentina has been projected to beat Brazil in an all-South American final.

Lionel Messi is also forecasted to win the Golden Boot with a return of seven goals in eight matches.

Interestingly, EA Sports has correctly picked the winners from each of the last three World Cup finals and are looking to make it four on the spin – while they also predicted the outcome for the team of the tournament.

Victors Argentina unsurprisingly dominate, with Emiliano Martinez, Marcos Acuna, Leandro Paredes, and Rodrigo de Paul joining Messi in the side for this year’s competition, according to the video game.

Defeated finalists Brazil have Marquinhos, Vinicius Junior and Richarlison in the XI, with the team completed by France duo Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane, as well as Portugal’s Joao Cancelo.

The tournament gets underway on November 20 and Brazil and reigning Copa America champions Argentina will have high hopes, as they look to end a 20-year dominant streak by European nations.

  • Dani Alves becomes Brazil’s oldest World Cup star, Martinelli preferred to Firmino

Dani Alves will become Brazil’s oldest World Cup star after earning a recall for Qatar 2022, while Roberto Firmino has missed out on Tite’s final squad, with Gabriel Martinelli preferred.

Alves is now 39 and made his international debut in 2006, but he is heading to his third World Cup this year.

The former Barcelona right-back will make Selecao history, with Djalma Santos – 37 at the 1966 World Cup – previously their oldest player at a finals.

Alves is not necessarily a hugely popular choice, but Tite responded to the veteran’s critics.

“I didn’t come here to please people on Twitter, which I don’t even know what percentage of the Brazilian people represents,” the coach said.

“I respect differing opinions and I’m not here to convince everyone. I just want to give information so that people democratically form their own opinion.

“Now, everyone has their opinion and everyone has my respect.”

Alves’ inclusion was the standout news from Tite’s squad announcement on Monday, although the coach also had a big call to make in attack.

Arsenal pair Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus each made the cut, but Liverpool’s Firmino did not due to the wealth of alternative options at Tite’s disposal.

Firmino does not return after being named in the Brazil squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, although nine members of that group are included again.

Alisson and Ederson remain among the goalkeepers, while defenders Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Danilo all return.

Manchester United pair Fred and Casemiro are unsurprising choices in midfield, as Neymar again joins Jesus up front amid a sensational season with Paris Saint-Germain.

Brazil World Cup squad in full:

Alisson (Liverpool), Ederson (Manchester City), Weverton (Palmeiras); Alex Sandro (Juventus), Alex Telles (Sevilla), Bremer (Juventus), Dani Alves (UNAM), Danilo (Juventus), Eder Militao (Real Madrid), Marquinhos (Paris Saint-Germain), Thiago Silva (Chelsea); Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United), Casemiro (Manchester United), Everton Ribeiro (Flamengo), Fabinho (Liverpool), Fred (Manchester United), Lucas Paqueta (West Ham); Antony (Manchester United), Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain), Pedro (Flamengo), Raphinha (Barcelona), Richarlison (Tottenham), Rodrygo (Real Madrid), Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid).

The goal is not just to play at the World Cup. The goal is to leave a mark as a nation and we really want to do well,” Kudus Mohammed told TV3

“My personal goal comes with the team and it’s because if the team doesn’t go far then the personal goals don’t come in. Like I said before, the main goal is to help the team get out of the group. The further we go, the more they see the individuals.”

“I think it’s one step at a time. Right now the main focus is to get out of the group and the next challenge comes,” he added.
