Plane ticket from Accra to Tamale is around GHC2000 – Bridget Otoo

Media personality Bridget Otoo has alleged that a trip from Accra to Tamale via aircraft cost about GHC2,000.

The Metro TV presenter made this assertion while bemoaning the price of tomatoes in the city and her resolution to travel to Tamale to get it at a cheaper price.

“I understand Tamale has cheaper tomatoes so please I want to go but I don’t know if I should go by air or road. Plane tickets is around 2k, then ground ride to the farm and back…,” she wrote in a post on X.

According to Bridget, “On my return I might buy 2 seats for my foodstuff Accra -Tema if you want to buy I beg join me let’s fly.”

The cost of foodstuffs has risen sharply, shocking many Ghanaians. Numerous individuals have turned to social media to voice their worries about the high cost of living, particularly as items like tomatoes, onions, and peppers are being sold at exorbitant prices.

A female trader in Ghana has expressed concern over the escalating prices of tomatoes.

In an interview, she mentioned that a bag of tomatoes now costs GHC8,000, while a basket is sold at GHC1,500.

Currently, a bucket is priced at GH200.

Due to the high cost, she stated that a single tomato is now sold for GHC5, meaning that with GHC20, one can purchase four tomatoes.

Businessman John Dumelo has attributed the high prices of tomatoes, onions, and peppers to insufficient production during the dry season.

“I am going back to Kumasi, Accra is expensive!” – Man ‘cries out’ after just 2 hours in Accra

A video of a man from Kumasi lamenting about the high cost of living in Accra has gone viral, adding to widespread discussion about the rising prices in Ghana’s capital city.

The video, shared by X user @eddie_wrt, captures the man’s frustration after encountering what he describes as exorbitant prices for food.

“I just got to Accra from Kumasi this morning. I tell you, I can’t spend more than 2 hours in this place. Ei! I just got down and decided to freshen up and get some food to eat. So I decided to visit the food joint here,” the man says, pointing at a food vendor.

He continues, “She has some waakye. I asked her how much the food was, and she said, GHC 30 and GHC 35.00. Ah! This early morning? What job have I done to earn that amount for food?”

The man then explains his experience with another vendor: “I decided to visit another vendor, and she said it starts from GHC 7.00. That does not include the additives. Kumasi, we can buy the same thing starting from GHC 5.00, and you can get spaghetti with some salad and co for GHC 1.00. Over here, the salad alone is GHC 3.00 upwards, and the spaghetti is GHC 2.00 upwards. Ei! I don’t think I can spend more than 2 hours here!?”

Since 2022, there have been numerous reports from individuals, groups, and institutions about the increasing expenses associated with living in the city.

Prices of goods and services, especially food, housing, and transportation, have surged, making it difficult for many to afford necessities.

Accra, according to a survey by Numbeo, published on Business Insider Africa in 2021, was ranked among the more expensive cities in Africa.

In a recent ranking of the most expensive cities for expatriates, Accra was listed among the top 15, alongside cities like Lagos, Johannesburg, and Pretoria.

The growing cost of living in Accra has sparked debates and concerns among residents and policymakers. Many are calling for measures to control prices and make the city more affordable for its inhabitants.

Shatta Wale blasts Samira Bawumia’s brother for demolishing land property at East Legon

A response to recent reports of property demolitions in Accra allegedly involving Abu Ramadan, brother of Samira Bawumia, dancehall artiste Shatta Wale voiced strong concerns about abuse of power and asset accumulation by those in authority.

During a widely circulated interview, Shatta Wale expressed dismay at such occurrences, asserting that they would not be tolerated in countries where equality is strictly enforced.

“It’s disheartening to hear that the sister of the Vice President’s wife was involved in demolishing people’s homes as though it is a normal issue. No, this cannot be accepted. We must uphold equality. In the UK, even disciplining a child can lead to police intervention,” he remarked.

Shatta Wale emphasized that indiscriminate demolition has become commonplace but should not be normalized.

“Ghana isn’t a country, it is an estate because police officers are building houses. President’s bodyguards are building houses and hospitals for themselves,” he added.

Recently, reports emerged alleging that Abu Ramadan, the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and brother of Samira Bawumia, was involved in demolishing several buildings in Accra, including properties owned by a brother of Kennedy Agyapong.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Samira Bawumia has refuted any involvement in the reported demolitions carried out by her brother, considering it baseless to link her to the incident merely because of her familial connection to the Deputy NADMO Director-General. She believes such accusations are an attempt to smear her reputation and that of her husband, especially as the country approaches the December elections.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to be cautious and extra vigilant as they commute to their respective destinations.

Meanwhile, another rainstorm over Burkina Faso is expected to bring cloudiness over parts of the upper west region of Ghana, with varying intensities of rain.

3 trucks smuggling vegetable oil in Accra confiscated by TCDA

A joint taskforce led by the Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) has seized three Man Diesel cargo trucks containing smuggled cooking oil at the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout in Accra.

Dr. Paul Amaning, the taskforce leader, disclosed that National Security operatives had received intelligence regarding vegetable oil being smuggled into the country from Togo.

The intercepted oil had been brought in through unapproved routes to avoid taxes and import duties.

Dr. Amaning stressed that these smuggling activities result in substantial losses to criminal syndicates attempting to bypass legal channels.

He stated that the taskforce’s goal is to ensure the sale of locally manufactured cooking oils to boost the economy and create jobs within the value chain.

He also cautioned the public, especially market women, against smuggling vegetable oil through land borders into the country.

The taskforce, along with personnel from the Customs Preventive Division, escorted the three trucks to the Airport branch for an official examination.

The owners of the seized cooking oil have been asked to provide all necessary documentation for a thorough review by the Ghana Revenue Authority—Customs Division.

The joint taskforce includes members from the TCDA, the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana (OPDAG), the Ghana Revenue Authority—Customs Division, and National Security.

Kayeyei Empowerment Programme to be launched by Bawumia today

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia is set to launch the “Kayeyei Empowerment Programme” at the Madina Social Centre today (21 May), aimed at providing skills training for head porters, commonly known as Kayayei.

The initiative aims to enhance the skills of head porters, create transitional job opportunities, and improve their socio-economic well-being.

Ghana has approximately 100,000 female head porters, with over 70% based in Accra due to the high demand for their services.

In January, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the communication director of the Bawumia campaign team, announced that Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia would fulfill his promise to provide accommodation for head porters.

In a post shared on [Platform X], Miracles Aboagye disclosed that two hostel facilities have been completed and are ready for commissioning.

These accommodations, situated in Madina and Ashaiman, suburbs of Accra, will not only serve as hostels for Kayayei but also function as training centers for them.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in society and offers a promising future for Kayayei in terms of both housing and skill development.

  • Consider reducing e-levy rate – Momo agents to gov’t

Consider reducing e-levy rate – Momo agents to gov’t

The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana has renewed its call for the government to review the rates of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy).

Their concerns align with recent discussions on financial inclusion at the ongoing 3i Summit in Accra.

Introduced in 2022 to boost domestic revenue, the E-levy has been reduced from the initial 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent and subsequently to 1 percent following widespread criticism.

In an interview with Citi News, Evans Otumfuo, the General Secretary of the Mobile Money Agents Association, emphasized the need for a further review to enhance financial inclusion in Ghana.

“We are going to make a case for the government to really as a matter of urgency consider reducing the e-levy rate. Because once that is done, we believe that we are going to get more of the value, and so the e-levy should be either scrapped or finally reduced to the barest minimum,” he stated.

He cited data from the Bank of Ghana showing increased usage of mobile money platforms following the rate reductions, advocating for the E-levy to be either further reduced or scrapped entirely.

“We have always been advocating for conditions and policies that would encourage uptake of financial products and some of these policies. We believe if they are implemented, it will encourage the adoption of financial platforms and financial means of transactions.

“So, from the onset of e-levy, we strongly opposed the idea of placing a tax on mobile money with the idea that it is going to discourage the growth of the sector. Because there are a lot of consumers who may be shying away due to the cost applied on it.”

Otumfuo highlighted the association’s long-standing opposition to the E-levy, arguing that it discourages the adoption of mobile money services, thereby hindering sector growth.

He stressed that favorable policies are essential for encouraging the uptake of financial products and digital transactions.

GPA advocates for the withdrawal of book assessment and approval role granted NaCCA

The Ghana Book Publishers Association (GPA) is calling for the removal of the book assessment and approval responsibility currently held by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

This demand comes amidst allegations of bias and concerns over the regulator’s role in promoting specific publishers.

During a press conference in Accra, GPA President Asare Konadu Yamoah expressed the association’s lack of trust in NaCCA’s ability to function as an independent and transparent regulator.

Yamoah emphasized that NaCCA should focus solely on developing the country’s curriculum and ensuring compliance rather than engaging in activities that favor particular publishers.

The GPA president highlighted instances where NaCCA allegedly assessed and approved works from specific publishers while claiming to have suspended assessments.

This discrepancy, according to Yamoah, undermines the credibility of NaCCA as a regulator.

Furthermore, Yamoah criticized NaCCA’s involvement in marketing textbooks, a role he deemed beyond the scope of a regulatory body.

He pointed out that such actions not only compromised NaCCA’s position but also raised questions about the organization’s commitment to fairness and impartiality.

The association’s discontent extends to the Ministry of Education, which it accuses of imposing a monopoly in the textbook supply chain and failing to pay for textbooks ordered from publishers.

Yamoah questioned the ministry’s motives in commissioning textbooks for the common core program while outstanding payments remained unresolved.

In response to these issues, the GPA announced plans to increase textbook prices by 30 to 40 percent starting in June, citing economic challenges faced by publishers.

Yamoah emphasized the need for dialogue and consultation between the government and businesses to address these concerns and ensure the sustainability of the publishing industry in Ghana.

Public attitude making our work difficult – Zoomlion

A leading waste management company in Ghana, Zoomlion, has identified attitudinal challenges as a significant obstacle to effective waste management in the nation’s capital, Accra.

Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer at Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Sophia Kudjordji, expressed concerns about the persistent waste issues despite substantial investments in the sector during an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show.

She highlighted that the company recently bolstered its workforce by recruiting additional personnel to conduct clean-up operations aimed at maintaining cleanliness in the city.

However, these efforts appear to be hindered by the public’s approach to waste disposal and the lax enforcement by law enforcement agencies.

Kudjordji lamented, “With the level of investment that is going into waste management in the country, it is quite sad that anybody should find the level of waste we find around. Now we have even added more people who clean up in the afternoon but attitude, behaviours and enforcement from the part of law enforcement agencies, have made our work very difficult at times”.

Accra, the capital city, has long grappled with recurring flooding issues, exacerbated by clogged gutters laden with waste. Zoomlion asserted that while 70% of waste in Accra is collected, a significant 30% remains uncollected.

Moreover, the company highlighted that large waste management firms, including Zoomlion, are responsible for 80% of waste collection, with local tricycle operators, known as “Aboboyaa,” handling the remaining 20%.

In areas like Pokuase, Achimota, Odawna, Tesano, and Alajo, motorists were forced to pull over along the roadside to seek shelter from the relentless rain.

Adding to the challenge, many individuals have taken advantage of the situation to dump their garbage into the flooded waters, exacerbating the problem.

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, bulldozers descended upon the Fantasy Dome, a prominent event center nestled in the heart of Accra, Ghana.

With their departure, the once bustling 20,000-seat structure lay in ruins, its remnants scattered across the expansive grounds that had hosted numerous beloved entertainment spectacles over the years.

Videos captured the extent of the destruction, revealing adjoining facilities also bearing the brunt of the demolition. Rooms housing essential equipment such as lighting and sound systems were among those adversely impacted.

According to Leslie Quaynor, the CEO of Fantasy Entertainment, the demolition was executed by state security agents acting upon directives from the Ghana Trade Fair Company.

This assertion finds support in accounts provided by pro-government Asaase Radio, which detailed the involvement of the Trade Fair Company Limited, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Security Ministry in the operation.

However, Quaynor presented evidence of a court injunction issued in January 2024, barring any demolition of the structure. “

“We currently have an injunction on Trade Fair and the property which stops them from doing exactly this. There are better ways to handle this especially when you are going against the law,” he added.

“The CEO of Fantasy Entertainment has stated in a Saturday, 17 March 2024 interview with a section of the media that he has an injunction, but the Trade Fair Company Limited has vehemently denied any such injunction.

Highlighting the disregard for legal procedures in the demolition process, he added “the company states that it has not been served with any court processes and no injunction was served on the day of the demolition,” the Asaase report stated.

Despite Quaynor’s claims, the Trade Fair Company Limited refuted the existence of such an injunction, asserting they had not received any court documents prohibiting the demolition.

The motivation behind the demolition stemmed from the expiration of the tenancy agreement between Fantasy Entertainment and the Trade Fair Company Limited in December 2023.

With plans for redevelopment underway, the Trade Fair Company sought to reclaim the space occupied by the Fantasy Dome for essential infrastructure projects vital to the Ghana International Trade Fair Center’s expansion.

Expressing his dismay at the unfolding events, Mr Quaynor pledged to pursue both spiritual guidance and legal recourse in seeking justice.

“I will give everything to God, I know God always shows us the right thing to do and I will follow his direction on this. I will have to take the pictures, I will take the legal route.

“Ghana is not a lawless country so I will take my case to the law courts and let them decide,” he stressed.

Looking ahead, the new Ghana International Trade Fair Center Development Project promises a modernized complex featuring convention and exhibition facilities, a technology hub, retail spaces, commercial offices, hotel accommodations, and public areas.

With infrastructure works and construction already in progress, the vision for a revitalized trade fair center is gradually taking shape.

  • Why Ghana’s capital city was moved from Cape Coast to Accra

Why Ghana’s capital city was moved from Cape Coast to Accra

A Ghanaian historian has elaborated on the reasons behind the relocation of Ghana’s capital from Cape Coast to Accra.

According to him, the relocation is a historical event deeply rooted in the colonial era, shaped by the colonialists’ strategic decisions and their perceptions of the socio-political landscape.

In a video shared by an X user, Scottbolshevik, the historian indicated that, during colonial rule, the British administrators found themselves grappling with a perceived challenge arising from educational advancements among the Fante people in the South.

The introduction of education to the Fante population resulted in a rapid sophistication of the community.

In a short span, the Fante people began producing professionals such as lawyers, doctors, and engineers, leading to increased assertiveness and resistance against the colonial powers, particularly in Cape Coast.

“The colonialists drew an imaginary boundary between the North and the South. And their reason was this, that when they gave education to the Fante people they became sophisticated and within a short time they started producing lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc, and they started fighting the Whites over lands and anything you can imagine in Cape Coast,” he sated.

The escalating conflicts between the Fante people and the colonial authorities over land and various issues compelled the colonialists to make a strategic decision – relocating the capital from Cape Coast to Accra.

By moving the administrative center to Accra, the colonial rulers aimed to mitigate the challenges posed by the educated Fante populace, avoiding confrontations and disputes that had become more frequent in Cape Coast.

The decision to draw an imaginary boundary between the North and the South was driven by a desire to prevent a recurrence of the situation witnessed in Cape Coast.

The colonialists believed that restricting education in the North would ensure a steady supply of labor for the mining and cocoa industries without the potential for educated individuals in the North to challenge their authority.

“That was what forced them to move the capital from Cape Coast to Accra and they felt they should not make that mistake anywhere else. So in the North they made sure there will be no education for the Northerners so that they will get Northern labor for the mining industry and the cocoa industry,” he added.

Accra, Ghana, enters into a sister city agreement with Chattanooga

Capital city of Ghana, Accra, has been designated as Chattanooga’s inaugural sister city in Africa, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic relations.

This announcement comes as Accra becomes Chattanooga’s seventh sister city with special diplomatic status.

In a symbolic gesture of pride and unity, Ekow Boye-Doe, a 24-year-old cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, proudly posed with the flag of Ghana after his team’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime during NFL Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.

Originally hailing from Accra, Boye-Doe’s connection to his homeland adds a poignant touch to the establishment of Accra as Chattanooga’s sister city in Africa.

This development underscores the growing ties between the two cities and the importance of fostering cultural exchange and collaboration across continents.

“Our other sister city relationships have enriched our community, grown our economy and broadened our cultural horizons,” Mayor Tim Kelly said in a news release announcing the relationship Monday. “It’s overdue that we establish one of these connections on the African continent, and I can think of no better partner than Accra.

Many Chattanooga residents have West African roots, and we look forward to robust partnerships and cultural exchange, especially for our youth.”

The partnership between the two cities has been in progress for over a year, according to city officials. However, the timing of the announcement is particularly serendipitous.

Accra’s recent appearance in a Super Bowl commercial for the NFL on Sunday night highlighted the growing popularity of American football worldwide, showcasing the city’s global reach and influence.

Stay indoors for your own good – GHS warns public over air pollution

The capital of Ghana, Accra grapples with severe air quality concerns, prompting health officials to caution the public, particularly individuals with respiratory issues, to stay indoors.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) emphasizes the need for immediate action as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highlights escalating health risks linked to air pollution.

Certain areas of Accra, like Cantonments, recorded a real-time air quality index of 263 on Tuesday, categorising it as very unhealthy.

The director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asare Bekoe, urged citizens to follow guidelines being developed collaboratively by stakeholders to address the hazardous conditions.

Dr. Bekoe, speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, stressed the importance of education, enforcement, and behavioral changes in response to the deteriorating air quality.

“From the public health point of view, I think that we drafted a guideline, but it is somehow dependent on the measurement of air quality from EPA and Meteorological Agency. Clearly based on the value that is recorded, you are supposed to exhibit certain behaviours.

“Is about education, enforcement and behaviour check, so if you are someone with a respiratory condition like asthma, you are more vulnerable, in that case, you need to be careful about how you expose yourself to these pollutants in the environment,” Dr. Bekoe stated.

He specifically addressed those with respiratory conditions, advising them to be cautious and limit exposure to pollutants in the environment.

“Based on their graduations, when you are around orange, then you are supposed to be more indoors than outdoors … hopefully in the next few days, we are going to communicate to Ghanaians that you also anticipate your risk and determine the kind of activities you go into.

“Is about education, enforcement and behaviour check, so if you are someone with a respiratory condition like asthma, you are more vulnerable, in that case, you need to be careful about how you expose yourself to these pollutants in the environment.”

Accra’s residents are urged to stay informed about the air quality levels, with the GHS planning to communicate guidelines to help individuals anticipate risks and adjust their activities accordingly in the coming days.

The collective efforts of health authorities and the Environmental Protection Authority aim to raise awareness and ensure the well-being of the population amidst this pressing environmental challenge.

Accra businessman remanded for allegedly defrauding individuals in Visa scam

A businessman residing in Gbawe, Bernard Oduro Takyi, finds himself in legal turmoil after being accused of defrauding two individuals of $27,000 under the guise of facilitating USA visas.

The allegations, which involve forgery of official documents, have landed Takyi in Police custody following a ruling by the Accra Circuit Court.

The court heard that Takyi allegedly deceived Gabriel Kwame Ntim and Prince Kofi Osei, both residents of Kumasi and Accra respectively, promising to secure visas for them and others within a short period.

The accused purportedly assured the victims that their names would be included in the visa applications, leading Ntim to pay $13,000 and Osei $14,000 on separate occasions in April and May 2023.

In a troubling turn of events, Takyi is accused of fabricating entry and exit stamps from Singapore, Mauritius, Turkey, and South Africa in the complainants’ passports without their knowledge.

Additionally, he allegedly forged letters from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), falsely introducing Ntim as a strategic partner for real estate investors and Osei as a “Metro Climate Change Management Officer.”

Despite Takyi’s plea of not guilty, the Prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maxwell Oppong, vehemently opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges.

The court, presided over by Samule Bright Acquah, acceded to the Prosecution’s request, remanding Takyi into Police custody until the next hearing scheduled for February 12, 2024.

According to the Prosecution, Takyi submitted the forged documents to the Regional USA Embassy in Madagascar, leading to visa approvals for Ntim and Osei.

However, the Embassy later detected the forgery and revoked the visas, prompting the victims to report the incident to the Police on December 22, 2023.

The case underscores the risks associated with fraudulent visa schemes and the importance of vigilance when engaging in such transactions.

As the legal proceedings unfold, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of documents and promises made by individuals offering visa assistance services.

  • Accra’s air quality is one of the deadliest in the world – Report

Accra’s air quality is one of the deadliest in the world – Report

A recent report by IQAir has ranked Accra as the city with the poorest air quality and highest pollution levels.

The report highlights PM2.5 as the primary pollutant in Accra’s atmosphere, with levels currently exceeding the WHO annual air quality guideline value by 63.1 times.

In response to this concerning data, IQAir has emphasized the urgent need for action to address the air quality crisis in Accra.

Recommendations provided include wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities during peak pollution hours, maintaining clean indoor air, reducing energy consumption, utilizing public transportation, and increasing tree planting efforts.

Industrial activities, transportation, and residential energy usage are identified as the primary contributors to air pollution in Accra.

The presence of high levels of particulate matter poses significant health risks, particularly related to cardiovascular and respiratory issues. PM2.5 particles, due to their minuscule size, can infiltrate the bloodstream through the lungs, leading to potential damage to various organ systems such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Health risks associated with prolonged exposure to elevated air pollution levels include increased rates of ischemic heart disease, heart attacks, arrhythmia, and damage to vital organs caused by reduced oxygen supply.

On February 5, the Ghana Meteorological Agency warned that the air quality in Ghana’s capital, Accra is very unhealthy.

The Agency in a circular on social media noted that the challenge is caused by dust particles in the air. However, the Agency has said that the situation will improve by the middle of the week, as more moisture will enter the atmosphere and reduce the dust in Accra.

  • 150 million gallons of water are supplied to Accra daily – GWCL

150 million gallons of water are supplied to Accra daily – GWCL

Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has addressed challenges faced in ensuring a consistent water supply to residents in the Greater Accra Region.

The company stated that its production of water supply to Accra is 150 million gallons per day.

However, residents in various parts of Accra have raised concerns about irregular water supply, affecting their daily lives and leading some to purchase water from tankers at high prices.

GWCL acknowledged the need for upgrades to meet the increasing demands of Accra’s growing population. The company also recognized that some complaints were related to localized faults that could be promptly addressed when reported.

During an interview on Citi FM, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, said, “Production of water supply to Accra is 150 million gallons per day or 682,000 cubic meters per day.”

Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah attributed the shortfall in water supply to an unplanned problem encountered at the Kpong and Weija Water Treatment Plants.

“The recent problem was an unplanned issue at Kpong [Treatment Plant] and that of Weija [Water Treatment Plant]. There are very old pumps that have been trying to manage, and they normally break down at Weija. At Kpong, after the flooding due to the Akosombo dam spillage, there was a weed blockage. Everything is normalized now, and the challenge has been resolved,” the Managing Director of GWCL said.

Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah highlighted several challenges faced by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), including tampering with pipelines by some customers, lack of capital, and overpopulation.

“Together with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), we should be able to move to the government and say that there must be some level of injection of capital. We will have to make a proper case that the gap will be closed. If they leave it to us, some people will not pay their tariffs, some will get people who will do illegal connections. Once they do the illegal connections, they don’t take into consideration our hydraulic system. These are the challenges we are faced with.”

He called for the retooling of the old system, which has become obsolete, suggesting that some pumps need to be changed.

“We need to retool the old system; if you go to Kpong [Treatment Plant] today, we have pumps that are as old as 1965. For the regulator, it’s dead. Because we are still using them, we take money to repair them when they break down. So, renewal of the old system,” he stated.

$338m loan sought by govt to reconstruct Accra-Tema motorway, others

Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, On Monday, Patrick Boamah, has announced that the government is seeking parliamentary approval for a $338 million loan agreement for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Accra-Tema motorway and other roads across the country.

Moreover, the facility is earmarked to finance the rehabilitation of the existing six-lane divided Nsawam highway within a timeframe of 36 months. Boamah provided these details during a press briefing in Accra.

Regarding the scope of work, he said, “The Accra-Tema motorway alone is 19.5 kilometres, but this project is 27.7 kilometres, so one may ask, where are you getting the remainder from? The entire project is divided into three sections. The first section is the Accra-Tema Motorway, which is 19.5 kilometres, and it is going to be the rehabilitation and expansion of a minimum of 10 lanes on the motorway… Then, the second section is N1, the George Walker Bush highway, and the scope is 5.7 kilometres… Then the third scope is the Nsawam road, rehabilitation of the existing six lanes on the Nsawam road.”

“…So this is the scope of work that is going to happen. So you can tell from what I have told you that it is going to be a very comprehensive program that will span about 3 years or more depending on how the project goes. And it is going to be a joint venture between Maripoma Limited and Ghana Infrastructure Fund.”

On November 15, Finance Minister Mr Ofori-Atta revealed that “preparation for the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway under the Road Sector’s Public Private Partnerships (PPP) with Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) is on course.”

The Concession Agreement and draft Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) agreement, he noted, have been approved by Cabinet and will be submitted to Parliament for approval “shortly.”

The Accra-Tema motorway is currently filled with potholes, which has led to several road accidents and adversely impacted the durability of cars on the road. As such, many called on the Ministry of Roads to take charge and have the challenges addressed.

The Finance Minister noted that the government’s infrastructure progamme will also be anchored on strong private sector collaboration.

“Government will continue to pursue the Mining Sector Roads rehabilitation projects to improve the road network in mining communities,” he added.

One police van, 4 officers and an AK47 supervise solo protest in Accra

On October 24, 2023, a solitary protester took to the streets of Accra, marching through various parts of the capital, including a stop at the premises of Despite Media.

The protester, known as Ernest Birmeh or Dr. Think Twice, was demonstrating against the numerous pressures faced by people in the country.

He was dressed in a white long-sleeved polo neck with the inscription “IGP” (Inspector General of Pressure) which originally indicates Inspector General of Police, wore dark shades and a cap.

He was accompanied by a police van with officers, including one senior officer in the front seat and two others in the back. While marching, he held a Ghanaian flag and a megaphone, while the police van’s siren blared.

“Today, I am engaged in a one-man demonstration to combat unnecessary pressure, aren’t you going to get married? Why won’t you give birth? Are you sticking to only one child, is one not too little?

“These undue pressures, I am protesting against that. If you will give birth or marry and get into a hard situation, stay away; as with anything that will put you in a tight corner, stay away. That is my one-man demo that has brought me to Peace FM today,” he stressed.

He also addressed other sources of pressure, such as women pressuring men for marriage and men supporting women’s education or training with the intention of marrying them afterward.

  • How thieves almost cut off Accra from Tema by stealing 1400 bolts from vital tunnel

How thieves almost cut off Accra from Tema by stealing 1400 bolts from vital tunnel

A Graphic news report has revealed a shocking discovery made by the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) that could have led to a catastrophic disaster on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

Thieves have stolen about 1,400 of the 2,000 bolts that hold the corrugated metals in the tunnel that connects Tema Community 18 to Borteyman, putting the lives of thousands of motorists at risk.

The theft was uncovered recently following an assessment on the bridge that showed signs of imminent danger.

The missing bolts had compromised the structural integrity of the bridge, making it susceptible to collapse if not repaired immediately.

The collapse of the bridge could have divided the motorway into two, cutting off Accra from Tema, according to the Principal Engineer at the Bridge Division of GHA, Aaron Nana Amponsah.

He told the Daily Graphic that the missing bolts were essential for holding the bridge together and pointed out that the tunnel had recently experienced severe vibration due to the heavy axle loads on the motorway.

The tunnel was closed to traffic last Saturday to allow for the replacement of the bolts. The new ones are being welded to the corrugated metals, to make them firm and difficult to remove.

The GHA has also done concrete works around the bridge basin to prevent water from pooling there, as well as diverting some blocked watercourses into a nearby storm drain.

A Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Stephen Jalulah, who inspected the tunnel last Wednesday prior to the commencement of work, lamented the damage caused by the alleged thieves.

He said that such acts of vandalism were unacceptable and unpatriotic, and vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

He also urged motorists and commuters to bear with the inconvenience caused by the closure of the tunnel and assured them that it would be reopened as soon as possible.

  • Accra Central businesses to close for 3 days over funeral rights of Ga Manye

Accra Central businesses to close for 3 days over funeral rights of Ga Manye

For three days, businesses and offices in the Greater Accra Region’s Central Business District are anticipated to close to allow for the last funeral rites of HRM Naa Dedei Omaedru III, the late Ga Manye, the Paramount Queen of Ga State.

“From the 27th to the 29th of October, we expect shops and offices in the Central Business District to remain closed,” said Lady Justice Naa-Yarlay Adjei Amoah, Chief of Staff at the office of the Ga Mantse.

Justice Amoah, who doubles as the Secretary to Central Funeral Planning Committee of the late Ga Manye, added “We also expect them to decorate their business premises with black and red drippings”.

The various markets are also to drip all their surroundings in black and red because “we are mourning together, it’s not just the palace so we are respectfully calling on all to cooperate with us in this time of grief.”

During a visit by a delegation from the Jospong Group of Companies, led by Mrs. Adokarley Okpoti-Paulo, who serves as the Group Financial Controller for the Environmental & Sanitation Group and Finance Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Lady Justice Amoah shared this information. The delegation signed the condolence book at the Ga Traditional Council on Friday, September 8, 2023.

As part of their visit, the Group presented a box of schnapps, a box of Castle Bridge gin, bottles of Red Label Whiskey, boxes of soft drinks, mineral water, and refuse bins, alongside an undisclosed cash donation. These contributions were intended to support the preparations for the final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye and to offer condolences to the elders.

Mrs. Okpoti-Paulo conveyed that this gesture was a means of consolation and a demonstration of mourning for the significant loss. She further announced that Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., a subsidiary of the group, would oversee all sanitation-related matters concerning the funeral.

“Zoomlion will help to keep the surroundings clean during and after the funeral ceremony to ensure that the Ga State is clean at all times,” she promised.

After accepting the gifts, Nii Ahene Nunoo III praised the Group for its generosity and wished the Group’s Executive Chairman a long and healthy life.

The late Ga Manye’s last funeral ceremonies are scheduled to take place from October 15 to October 31, 2023. Ga Manye passed away in December of last year.

On June 19, 2023, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, president of the Republic of Ghana, signed and declared open the book of condolences.

  • Makola, Agbogbloshie are 2 of Accra’s 5 most polluted environment

Makola, Agbogbloshie are 2 of Accra’s 5 most polluted environment

Enhanced air quality monitoring in Accra has unveiled a concerning trend, pinpointing Nima, Makola, Agbogbloshie, Chorkor, and Madina Zongo Junction as the city’s five most severely polluted areas.

These locations have consistently registered subpar air quality standards over an extended period, primarily due to soot generated by open waste burning and vehicular emissions.

Professor Kofi Amegah, the leader of the Breathe Accra Project, emphasized that these pollutants and particulates pose significant health risks to the local population.

Data compiled from over four months of monitoring has revealed that pollution levels in these areas remain elevated throughout the day, surpassing the recommended standards set by the World Health Organization.

According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), optimal or good air quality typically falls within the range of 0 to 50 on the index. AQI levels ranging from 51 to 100 are considered moderate, with potential health concerns for a small subset of individuals, particularly young children under the age of five.

“For instance, AQI for Agbogbloshie on Wednesday 6th September 2023 was between 150 and 200, which is unhealthy for all groups of people,” Prof Amegah said.

He noted that the deployment of over 30 sensors is enhancing the capabilities of the Environmental Protection Agency’s existing monitoring stations. This expansion in monitoring coverage encompasses a larger portion of the city, ensuring continuous surveillance of air quality.

While the monitoring network has yet to reach the international benchmark of having sensors within every five-mile radius, the improved monitoring system provides real-time data on air quality. This data is instrumental in conducting investigations to identify the sources and underlying causes of pollution, enabling prompt remedial actions.

Regarding green spaces, Professor Amegah shared findings from a recent study he conducted, revealing a significant decline in green spaces over the past two decades. These green spaces, including tree cover, grassy areas, and parks, serve as the ‘lungs of the city,’ but their presence has substantially diminished.

“These greens purified the air, but we have removed almost all. We need to act fast by planting trees before it is too late,” he cautioned.

Mr Alex Johnson, the Head of Transport, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said: “There is a high concentration of pollutants wherever there is high population and high volume of vehicular traffic at the same time.”

“As vehicles move slowly, fuel burning becomes inefficient resulting in high emissions of air pollutants. Also, open burning of waste in these areas is quite common, so I’m not surprised at the results of the monitored data.”

He emphasized that various groups, including market women/traders, “truck pushers,” head porters (kayayei), patrons, drivers, pedestrians, and local residents living in these exposed environments, face a heightened risk of developing heart-related diseases and lung cancer in the medium to long term.

Statistics derived from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for the first half of 2023 reveal that asthma, primarily caused by poor air quality, ranks as the second most commonly recorded non-communicable disease (NCD). Dr. Efua Commeh, the Acting Programme Manager for Non-Communicable Diseases at GHS, clarified that this data implies a growing number of individuals suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases such as asthma. Pollutants in the air also increase children’s susceptibility to upper respiratory infections like the flu, which can trigger asthma symptoms.

The inhalation of dust and soot particles poses significant health risks, potentially resulting in lung dysfunction, heart diseases, cancer, nerve damage, and harm to vital organs like the brain, kidneys, and liver, ultimately leading to premature deaths.

In terms of the healthcare burden, information obtained by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that the National Health Insurance expends an annual sum of US$14,976,000 on the treatment of NCD-related conditions among 500 hospitalized patients.

Mr. Desmond Appiah, the Country Lead of Clean Air Fund, reiterated the imperative need for collaboration among leadership, law enforcement agencies, and the public to preserve clean skies. He emphasized that working collectively and making informed decisions based on evidence, along with targeted actions, would help reduce and eventually eliminate waste burning and enhance transportation methods.

A shared objective of ensuring clean air for all can serve as a catalyst for securing financing and investments in sectors that improve air quality measures and yield numerous co-benefits.
