Dr Odoi’s lawyers file injunction to stop Parliament from sending anti-LGBTQ bill to Akufo-Addo

Researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi who is one of the defendants challenging the constitutionality of the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has filed an injunction application to halt Parliament from sending the bill to President Akufo-Addo.

The application was filed by Dr Odoi’s legal counsel.

Parliament has formally made a request to the Office of the President for a specific date regarding the transmission of the Human Sexual and Family Values Bill for presidential assent.

This action follows a directive from Nana Bediatuo Asante, the secretary to President Akufo-Addo, on March 18, urging Parliament to withhold the presentation of the bill, also referred to as the anti-LGBT+ bill, to the President.

Asante’s request was issued pending the resolution of pertinent matters currently under consideration by the Supreme Court.

Acknowledging the President’s office’s request to pause the bill’s progression, Cyril K. O. Nsiah, the Clerk to Parliament, communicated in a letter dated April 10, 2024.

However, Mr Nsiah also requested the President’s office to specify a suitable day for Parliament to present the Human Sexual and Family Value Bill, 2024, to the President for his deliberation.

“Accordingly, I await an indication in writing from your office on when to present the Human Sexual and Family Value Bill, 2024 to His Excellency the President for his consideration, pursuant to Article 106(7) of the Constitution, 1992” the letter read.

Election 2024: We are not different from Kenya, let’s be guided – Bagbin to govt

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned Ghanaian leaders to heed the recent developments in Kenya as a warning, particularly as the nation approaches a pivotal election on December 7.

He emphasized that the circumstances in Kenya closely mirror those in Ghana and called on leaders, including Members of Parliament, to diligently work towards ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

Mr. Bagbin has initiated communication with key stakeholders such as the chairpersons of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, traditional authorities, and the Chief Justice, and plans to engage President Akufo-Addo to help ensure a peaceful electoral process.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, Bagbin underscored the importance of proactive measures to protect Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections.

“People sometimes take so many things for granted including my colleagues in Parliament but we all can bear witness that what happened in Kenya is now in Tanzania it could be in Ghana and I am not saying it will be in Ghana.

“We are not different from our brothers and sisters in Kenya and so we have to take preemptive measures to prevent that from happening and so we must do all we can to make sure that the right person that Ghanaians want to lead the country, leads the country and so in this matter, I will do all I can so that nobody reads partisanship in whatever I do.”

I will create a new institution that will deal with corruption – Alan

Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has asserted that he will enhance the anti-corruption efforts by replacing the Office of the Special Prosecutor with an anti-corruption overseer.

He advocated consolidating all existing fragmented anti-corruption laws into a unified document overseen by this proposed anti-corruption overseer.

Last week, the Movement for Change unveiled its comprehensive developmental agenda in a document named the Great Transformational Plan (GTP).

The manifesto outlines key priority areas that a future government led by the movement will prioritize to enhance the socio-economic welfare of Ghanaians.

Alan Kyerematen elaborated on his vision for the nation on Monday, July 1, 2024, emphasizing that the manifesto has been meticulously crafted to prominently address the needs of vulnerable segments of society.

He expressed concern about the efficacy of existing programs aimed at persons living with disabilities, questioning their impact.

He said, “It is very important that we review the existing programmes. Governments will say we have programmes for persons living with disabilities but how far has this programmes helped them?”.

Additionally, he criticized District Assemblies for failing to allocate a portion of their Common Fund to benefit persons living with disabilities.

Formerly Minister of Trade and Industry, Kyerematen is confident that restructuring the anti-corruption framework by establishing an independent Anti-corruption Overseer, distinct from the Attorney-General’s oversight, will enhance its effectiveness.

He clarified that this new body would be empowered and adequately resourced to carry out its mandate independently.

“Currently, the Special Prosecutor derives its powers from the Attorney-General which is not helping to support the powers of the Special Prosecutor, so we are proposing that authorities assigned to the Overlord is not linked to the Attorney-General and so we are creating a whole new institution for dealing with corruption which is different from what we have now,” Alan Kyerematen added.

Regarding the economy, he proposed a roadmap to reduce Ghana’s current debt-to-GDP ratio of 62.7% to just 5%.

Kyerematen views his candidacy in the presidential race as a beacon of hope, promising transformation and progress for the country.

We’ll protest against you if you don’t halt the sale of SSNIT hotels – Concerned farmers to Akufo-Addo

The Concerned Farmers Association has threatened to push for President Akufo-Addo’s resignation if the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) proceeds with selling four hotels to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture.

National President Nana Oboadie Boateng expressed strong opposition to the sale, urging SSNIT to halt the transaction or face their backlash. He also called on the Minister to abandon his plans to purchase the hotels, warning that if the acquisition goes through, they will campaign to ensure he loses his parliamentary seat.

Speaking on Frontline with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Boateng cautioned the President to stop the process if he wishes to complete his term peacefully. He declared that the practice of political leaders exploiting their positions to privatize state enterprises must end, as such actions are often riddled with corruption and deceit aimed at defrauding Ghanaians.

He criticized politicians who acquire state assets while in office, labeling them as unfit for election as MPs or state officials.

“Bryan Acheampong should abandon the idea. He will not acquire the SSNIT hotels. SSNIT must halt the transaction.

“We will not permit SSNIT to sell the hotels to Bryan Acheampong. Should they proceed with the sale, we will dismantle SSNIT. We will also organize a colossal, unprecedented demonstration against President Akufo-Addo. The protest will be so extensive that it will reveal to the world the incompetence of this nation, Ghana.

“We will unmask these corrupt leaders who have mismanaged our country and are now selling and privatizing state assets. We will stage a massive demonstration and an uprising unlike any seen before, to show the world that Ghana, unable to manage its own affairs, is the most ineffectual country,” he said.

He continued, “If we persist in privatizing our state assets, then the presidency itself should be privatized. We should allow foreigners to take over, be it the whites or the Arabs since they possess the resources.

“This president and his successors have shown they are incapable. If you cannot manage these basic responsibilities in your own country, then you lack sense and wisdom. We do not support the illicit sale of state assets to political officeholders.

“If you are incompetent, step aside. We will recognize that Ghanaian leaders are unfit to govern us, and perhaps the British should return to rule.

“Furthermore, we are investigating to identify all politicians who have acquired state assets and are running for office, especially MPs. After our investigation, we will expose these politicians and encourage Ghanaians to vote against them.”

Akufo-Addo reportedly orders another chief to stand and greet him

President Akufo-Addo has once again been captured directing a chief to stand before exchanging greetings with him.

A viral video from a recent funeral in the Ashanti Region captured the president instructing a chief to rise before shaking hands.

In the footage, the chief, seated initially, extended his hand to greet the president. Akufo-Addo, visibly displeased with the chief’s posture, initially extended his hand but withdrew it upon realizing the chief remained seated.

Subsequently, the president admonished the chief, who complied by standing to greet him, though Akufo-Addo appeared somewhat unsatisfied.

This incident echoes a previous occurrence in May 2024 when Akufo-Addo drew criticism for a similar action at another funeral event.

In a brief clip, the president and his security detail signaled for chiefs to stand before greeting them, sparking controversy.

The Ministry for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs defended the president’s actions, asserting that he acted within cultural norms.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng affirmed that President Akufo-Addo’s request for chiefs to stand aligns with Ghanaian customs, emphasizing respect in greetings to authorities.

The statement underscored the president’s adherence to constitutional protocols granting him precedence at public gatherings.

  • Stop renewing contracts for retired officials – Solidaire Ghana to Akufo-Addo

Stop renewing contracts for retired officials – Solidaire Ghana to Akufo-Addo

A Ghanaian think tank, Solidaire Ghana, has opposed the government’s recent practice of renewing contracts for public officials approaching retirement.

This criticism arises in response to the Akufo-Addo administration’s decision to extend the tenure of Auditor-General Johnson Asiedu, despite his nearing retirement age.

Additionally, the government has extended contracts for other key figures such as Police Chief Mr. James Oppong Boanu, former Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority Rev. Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah, and current Commissioner General Ms. Julie Essiam.

These actions have sparked controversy within the affected state institutions, raising concerns about nepotism and the potential for increased corruption.

Alexander Twum-Barimah Esq., Director for Policy and Planning at Solidaire Ghana, has condemned these extensions, arguing that they could detrimentally impact institutional dynamics.

Mr Twum-Barimah emphasized that allowing retiring officials to depart as scheduled would open opportunities for fresh perspectives and innovative leadership, essential for organizational growth and effectiveness.

According to the legal practitioner, allowing officers due for retirement to leave “provides an opportunity to introduce fresh perspectives and innovative ideas into the organization.”

“New leaders can bring different approaches and strategies, fostering a culture of creativity and progress in institutions such as the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Ghana Police Service, among others,” he added.

He urged the Akufo-Addo government to prioritize effective succession planning, which he believes is crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of public institutions.

Mr Twum-Barimah stressed that ending contract extensions would foster a culture of advancement for younger employees, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to organizational success.

    Read the statement below:

The Case Against Extending Contracts for Public Officials Due for Retirement

    Introduction

The practice of Ghana government extending contracts for public officials who are due for compulsory retirement has sparked significant debate. While proponents argue that experienced officials bring valuable expertise, there are compelling reasons to avoid extending such contracts. This article outlines key reasons why contracts should not be given to public officials who are due for retirement, emphasizing the need for organizational renewal, fairness, and long-term planning. Practical examples of such officials who have received such contracts are the present Auditor General of Ghana Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, Former Inspector General of Police Mr. James Oppong Boanu, Immediate past Commissioner General of Ghana Revenue Authority Rev. Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah and even the Present Commissioner General Ms. Julie Essiam among others.

    1. Encouraging Organizational Renewal and Innovation

1.1 Fresh Perspectives; Retirement of senior officials provides an opportunity to introduce fresh perspectives and innovative ideas into the organization. New leaders can bring different approaches and strategies, fostering a culture of creativity and progress into institutions such as Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Police Service among others. Government must therefore have an effective succession planning which is essential for the sustainability of public institutions. Allowing retirements to proceed as scheduled encourages the development of a pipeline of future leaders, ensuring that younger employees have opportunities to advance and contribute to the organization’s success. Its therefore necessary to prevent stagnation, thus, prolonging the tenure of retired officials can lead to organizational stagnation. Continuous renewal is necessary to keep pace with changing environments, technologies, and societal needs. Fresh leadership can drive necessary reforms and adapt to new challenges more effectively.

    1. Ensuring Fairness and EquityMerit-Based Opportunities; Extending contracts for retiring officials can create perceptions of favoritism and undermine merit-based advancement, forinatce many have criticize this present government led by Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo of favouoring the present Auditor General over the past Auditor General Yao Dumelevo who as asked to retire immediate whilst his successor remains at post on contract, its therefore important to ensure that positions are filled through open, competitive processes to help maintain fairness and motivates all employees to perform at their best. Younger and mid-career employees may feel disenfranchised if older officials are continually retained beyond their retirement age. It is important to balance the career progression opportunities across different age groups to maintain morale and engagement within the workforce. Adherence to Retirement Policies is key because retirement policies are established by law to create predictable career pathways and workforce planning. Adhering to these policies ensures consistency and transparency in managing public sector employment, reinforcing trust in institutional processes.
    2. Managing Long-Term Costs and Efficiency Cost

Implications are always argued when extending contracts for retired officials as it can result in higher salary and benefits costs, particularly if these individuals are retained at senior pay grades. Effective workforce planning should aim to optimize resource allocation and manage public funds prudently. Additionally, Health and Productivity issues arises when officials age, the concerns are possible declining of health and productivity. While many older employees remain highly capable, it is important to consider the potential impact on overall organizational efficiency and the well-being of the individual. Again, opportunities for restructuring retirements provide natural opportunities for organizational restructuring and reallocation of roles and responsibilities. This can lead to more efficient and effective use of resources, aligning staffing levels with current and future needs.4. Ethical and Legal ConsiderationsLegal Compliance with retirement is key, because adhering to retirement policies ensures compliance with legal frameworks governing public sector employment. Deviations from established norms can lead to legal challenges and undermine the credibility of the institution. Furthermore, public officials are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards. Extending contracts beyond retirement can be perceived as self-serving or nepotistic, eroding public trust and confidence in government institutions. Over and above that is accountability and performance, regular turnover of senior officials enhances accountability and performance. New appointees are likely to be more vigilant and proactive in addressing issues, knowing that their performance will be closely scrutinized.

In conclusion, while the experience and expertise of senior public officials are valuable, extending contracts beyond their retirement age can have significant drawbacks. Encouraging organizational renewal, ensuring fairness and equity, managing long-term costs, and upholding ethical and legal standards are critical considerations. By adhering to retirement policies and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, public institutions can better serve the needs of society and ensure sustainable development. Retirements should be seen as an opportunity for growth and transformation, enabling the next generation of leaders to step forward and contribute to the public good.

  • You are the brain behind state capture under your govt – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo

You are the brain behind state capture under your govt – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo

Member of parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that president Akufo-Addo is using his position and authority to gain control over key institutions, processes, and resources of the state for personal gains.

Ablakwa’s accusation stems from the president’s failure to intervene in the sale of hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

In a recent statement on his platform, Ablakwa, who organized the “Hands off our Hotels Demonstration,” criticized President Akufo-Addo for not halting the sale despite opposition from organized labor and widespread public dissent.

Ablakwa asserted that this inaction solidifies President Akufo-Addo’s role as the architect of systemic state capture in Ghana.

“President Akufo-Addo refused to stop the sale of our SSNIT hotels when he met organized labour yesterday [Tuesday, June 25]. Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour representatives on her board.

“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief-architect of all the putrefying State Capture. It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya. Watch out for the big announcement soon.”

SSNIT Board Chair Elizabeth Ohene responded to the controversy, acknowledging the political sensitivity heightened by Bryan Acheampong’s involvement as a government official and businessman.

She defended the transparency of the sale process, pointing out that it was publicly advertised in major newspapers.

Ablakwa further contested the suitability of Bryan Acheampong as a buyer, citing alleged financial losses at his Rock City Hotels. Acheampong challenged Ablakwa to substantiate these claims, offering to give away properties if evidence of financial instability could be proven.

The dispute intensified with Ablakwa claiming to have obtained documents from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) indicating financial difficulties at Rock City Hotel, which Acheampong vehemently denied, citing pending tax filings as evidence of ongoing financial assessment.

Throughout the exchange, Ablakwa maintained his stance on accountability, emphasizing that his oversight role as a lawmaker was not motivated by personal gain or material rewards.

  • “Akufo-Addo is the chief-architect of all the putrefying state capture” – Okudzeto

“Akufo-Addo is the chief-architect of all the putrefying state capture” – Okudzeto

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has labelled President Akufo-Addo as the “chief architect” of a controversial deal involving the sale of four SSNIT Hotels to Rock City, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Mr Ablakwa’s accusations come in the wake of widespread opposition to the sale, which has sparked significant public outcry and protests under the banner ‘Hands Off Our Hotels.’

Despite these protests and a meeting with organized labor earlier this week, President Akufo-Addo has refused to halt the transaction.

In a social media post on June 26, 2024, Ablakwa drew a parallel to recent events in Kenya, where massive youth protests compelled the government to withdraw a contentious finance bill that included tax increases.

The Kenyan demonstrations escalated dramatically, culminating in the burning of cars and a portion of the parliament building on June 25, 2024. Several protestors were reportedly killed by police, with many others injured. Under intense pressure, Kenyan President William Ruto reversed his stance and withdrew the tax plan.

Citing the Kenyan protests as an inspiration, Ablakwa criticized President Akufo-Addo for his role in the SSNIT hotels deal. He also condemned Elizabeth Ohene, the SSNIT board chair appointed by Akufo-Addo, for justifying the deal despite widespread opposition from Ghanaians and labor representatives on the board.

“Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene, is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour reps on her board,” Ablakwa stated.

“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief architect of all the putrefying State Capture. It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya,” he continued.

Ablakwa has called for Ghanaians to prepare for a significant demonstration, promising a major announcement soon regarding the protest plans. He assured the public that the sale of the SSNIT hotels would be actively opposed until it is halted.

According to JoyNews, Dr Bawumia personally informed his boss of his intention to contest the 2024 general elections with Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, as his running mate.

It is reported that the president accepted the nominee Dr Bawumia presented and offered some counsel on Tuesday night at the Jubilee House.

Sources say Dr Bawumia broke the news to President Akufo-Addo as follows:

“…He was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and won re-election in 2012, 2016 and 2020. He served on the Health Appointment and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

“In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him Education Minister and he now serves as the Energy Minister. The name is Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia was elected NPP flagbearer in December 2023 and is yet to officially communicate to the public his choice for running mate.

Your govt has led almost 1m Ghanaians into severe poverty – Franklin Cudjoe to Amin Adam

Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticized Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for asserting that the NPP government has outperformed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in economic management over their respective eight-year terms.

During a UK Town Hall meeting last weekend, the minister claimed superiority in managing Ghana’s economy, citing achievements in economic size, per capita income, job creation, and economic growth over the opposition.

“On the economy, our record is better than their record. In terms of the economy’s size, we’ve performed better than them. In per capita income, we’ve excelled over them. In job creation and economic growth, we’ve surpassed them,” he said.

Responding to these remarks in a Facebook post on June 25, 2024, Mr Cudjoe argued that many Ghanaians continue to grapple with economic hardships exacerbated by the Akufo-Addo government.

He pointed out that under this administration, over one million Ghanaians fell into extreme poverty due to what he described as poor economic management.

Mr Cudjoe also highlighted instances where the savings of thousands of Ghanaians were wiped out through financial losses.

Addressing Minister Mohammed Amin Adam directly, Cudjoe acknowledged the political context of the statements but urged him to recognize the severe economic impacts endured by citizens under the current government.

He emphasized the need for focused governance amidst what he described as fiscal recklessness and corruption in public procurement processes.

“My brother Mohammed Amin Adam, I know this is political campaigning season, but please, the wounds of economic atrophy birthed by fiscal recklessness and highway procurement graft, culminating in the ugliest of financial haircuts, demeaning the self-esteem of our pensioner senior citizens and shepherding almost a million people into hard-core poverty as never experienced in a generation, all supervised by your immediate predecessor with backing vocals from the presidency, are fresh in our minds. By all means, do your politics, but just stay focused on your caretaker role, which you are doing astonishingly well at,” he wrote.

Asante Bediatuo appointed Ambassador-at-Large, steps down as Akufo-Addo’s secretary

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named Nana Bediatuo Asante, his long-serving Executive Secretary, as an Ambassador-at-Large.

The announcement came during a formal ceremony at Jubilee House, where the President also commissioned nine other diplomats to represent Ghana across the globe.

The cohort of newly appointed officials includes three High Commissioners and five Ambassadors, each tasked with the pivotal role of fostering Ghana’s relations worldwide.

Among them are Vice Admiral Seth Amoama heading to Nigeria, Mrs. Francisca Ashietey-Oduntun to South Africa, Mr. Ernest Yaw Amporful to Rwanda, Major General Nicholas Peter Andoh to Türkiye, Mr. Henry Tachie-Menson to Belgium and the EU, Mrs. Charity Gbedawo to Morocco, Ms. Abigail Naa Adzoko Kwashi to Norway, Dr. Robert Afriyie to Ethiopia and the African Union, and Nana Bediatuo Asante in his expansive new role.

President Akufo-Addo charged the envoys with the mission to elevate Ghana’s stature as a beacon of stability and progress. He underscored the importance of nurturing bilateral ties, drawing investments, and championing Ghana’s interests on the international stage.

The President’s address highlighted the strategic timing of these appointments, as the world recovers from the pandemic’s shadow and faces geopolitical tensions. He pointed out the necessity for Ghana to solidify international alliances to surmount these global challenges.

Moreover, President Akufo-Addo called on the diplomats to actively connect with the Ghanaian diaspora, whose contributions are integral to the nation’s economy and cultural legacy. He emphasized the dual benefit of providing a sense of belonging to overseas Ghanaians and tapping into their potential to further national development.

The diplomats’ agenda also includes tackling pressing global concerns such as armed conflicts, terrorism, climate change, and illicit financial flows. The President stressed the imperative of collaborative efforts to address these issues.

As the envoys set out on their diplomatic ventures, they carry with them the collective hopes of Ghana. Their effectiveness in advocating for the nation’s interests will be instrumental in shaping Ghana’s future and its standing in the world community.

The President concluded with an appeal for integrity and excellence, reminding the diplomats of the importance of working harmoniously with the seasoned Foreign Service officers at their respective posts.

This collaboration, he noted, is key to the success of their missions and the broader objectives of Ghana’s foreign policy.

Akufo-Addo directs disbursement of GHS1.5bn bailout to victims of banking sector clean-up

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Finance Ministry to allocate ¢1.5 billion to aid customers impacted by the banking sector’s clean-up initiative.

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam conveyed this instruction during a UK Town Hall meeting over the weekend.

He stressed that the President’s mandate requires the disbursement to be finalized between the present time and October.

Dr. Adam reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of the Ghanaian populace, clarifying that individuals bear responsibility for their investment choices, not the government.

“Ideally, government should not be held responsible for the investment decisions of individuals, but this government is so caring.

“Mistakes were made and people were not well-informed, and they didn’t know who to consult to be advised, but we also know that the people who are affected are suffering, and we have heard that some people have died and others had to commit suicide.”

“This government is so caring that in the first place, we granted some bailout to all the affected and I want to tell you again that the President has directed that we do another bailout.

“So between now and October, we will release 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to the affected people,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for Karaga emphasized that the government has successfully restructured its debt of $5.1 billion with these creditors, and has also finalized the restructuring of $13.1 billion with Eurobond holders.

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Finance Ministry to release ¢1.5 billion to support customers impacted by the banking sector clean-up.

This announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam during a UK Town Hall meeting over the weekend.

Dr. Amin Adam highlighted that the President’s directive requires the disbursement to be completed by October.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians, noting that individuals are responsible for their own investment choices, not the government.

  • Akufo-Addo’s decision to extend Auditor-General’s contract aimed at safeguarding post-office interests – Vitus Azeem

Akufo-Addo’s decision to extend Auditor-General’s contract aimed at safeguarding post-office interests – Vitus Azeem

Anti-corruption advocate, Vitus Azeem, has raised objections regarding President Akufo-Addo‘s decision to prolong the tenure of Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, by an additional two years.

The extension, announced in a notice from the Audit Service dated July 19, permits Mr. Asiedu to continue in his role past his original retirement date of August 1, 2024.

However, during an interview on JoyNews’ News Desk on Thursday, June 20, Mr. Azeem voiced concerns that this action undermines the perceived independence of the Auditor-General.

He contended that such an extension might raise suspicions that the Auditor-General could be inclined to favor the president and his appointees.

“People will go out with the perception that the current man is playing ball with the president and his appointees .. and that he is going to please the president and his appointees,” he stressed.

Mr. Azeem also emphasized the contentious exit of former Auditor-General Dr. Daniel Yao Domelevo in 2020, which was associated with disagreements regarding his date of birth, as a comparison to highlight the controversial nature of such appointments.

He further criticised the extension as a strategy by President Akufo-Addo in “a way to protect his future immediately after leaving office so the Auditor–General will not come after him and his appointees.”

He recognized that although the constitution allows for extensions for certain officials, the circumstances and ramifications of this particular extension raise doubts about the dedication to upholding an independent and efficient anti-corruption framework.

  • Your petition against sale of SSNIT hotels will be acted on by Akufo-Addo – Presidency

Your petition against sale of SSNIT hotels will be acted on by Akufo-Addo – Presidency

The Office of the President has assured that President Akufo-Addo will review and respond to the petition submitted by the “Hands Off Our Hotels” protesters, who are opposing the sale of 60 percent shares in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

The protest, led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, culminated in the submission of the petition at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 18. Deputy Chief of Staff Emmanuel Adumuah Bossman, who received the petition on behalf of the President, expressed the administration’s commitment to considering the protesters’ concerns.

“We are delighted to receive the petition because it is part of the exercise of our democratic rights guaranteed under Chapter 5 of our constitution. We are also grateful that this procession and demonstration have taken place without any negative outcomes,” Bossman stated.

“I will submit the petition to the President, and I can assure you that it will be looked into, and appropriate measures will be taken as and when deemed fit.”

During the protest, Mr Ablakwa called on President Akufo-Addo to halt the sale of the SSNIT hotels, arguing that the transaction was not in the country’s best interest.

He urged the President to ensure that profitable state assets are not sold and that workers’ properties are not disposed of without their consent.

Mr Ablakwa also demanded that ministers and politically exposed persons be prevented from purchasing state assets, highlighting the need to stop the Blay family’s alleged illegal encroachment on Labadi Hotel’s beachfront.

Mr Ablakwa passionately addressed the crowd, emphasizing the protesters’ determination to protect state assets from being sold to politicians.

“It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen,” he declared.

“Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access. These are our assets, and we are saying you haven’t consulted us. Rest assured, we are confident these hotels will not be sold.”

The protest saw tensions escalate when police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, resulting in several injuries.

Mr Ablakwa confirmed to the media that some injured protesters had been transported to health facilities for treatment. He noted that some individuals collapsed after being pepper-sprayed without provocation and assured that he would visit the victims at the hospitals they had been admitted to.

As the nation awaits President Akufo-Addo’s response, the “Hands Off Our Hotels” movement remains steadfast in its commitment to preventing the sale of SSNIT assets, asserting that the public must be consulted before any such transactions occur.

  • I believed in Akufo-Addo in 1998 but not today – Joseph Nunoo-Mensah

    I believed in Akufo-Addo in 1998 but not today – Joseph Nunoo-Mensah

Former National Security Advisor Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (RTD) has expressed his disillusionment with the current state of Ghana and President Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

Speaking on TV3’s “Hot Issues” with Kemmini Amanor, the former Chief of Defence Staff lamented the economic hardships and lack of development in the country, which he described as a “mess.”

“The Akufo-Addo I believed in, in 1998 isn’t the same person today,” Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah stated. He conveyed deep disappointment in the trajectory of the nation under the leadership of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the two dominant parties in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

Nunoo-Mensah criticized the current administration for failing to deliver on its promises and improve the country’s economic situation.

“The country is in a mess,” he said, highlighting the pervasive economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians. He expected Ghana to be in a much better place than it is today, expressing his dismay at the slow pace of development.

“I am a disappointed person. I thought Ghana would be a better place than we are today,” he admitted. According to Nunoo-Mensah, the primary role of elected officials should be to serve the interests of the people, not their own. “When you vote for parliamentarians and the president, we are voting for them to run Ghana for our benefit, not for their benefit.”

When asked about his perspective on contemporary politics, Nunoo-Mensah was candid in his response: “It is just to make money.” His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among many Ghanaians who feel that the political class has prioritized personal gain over national development.

  • We thought Mahama wasn’t good enough but he’s way better than Akufo-Addo – Martin Kpebu

We thought Mahama wasn’t good enough but he’s way better than Akufo-Addo – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has delivered a scathing critique of President Akufo-Addo‘s administration, asserting that former President John Dramani Mahama, once deemed inadequate, now appears significantly better in comparison.

Mr Kpebu’s comments come amidst growing concerns over rampant corruption and economic challenges under the current government.

Kpebu, addressing the media during the “Hands off our hotels” demonstration on Tuesday, lamented the current state of governance, highlighting that Ghanaians are increasingly frustrated with the President’s handling of corruption.

“Ghanaians are very angry. I had to leave court and come here. But some people don’t have that luxury but every day when you interact with people, you will find out that people are very angry. They are dissatisfied with the corruption-ridden Akufo-Addo governance,” he said.

Reflecting on the decision made in 2016 to elect Akufo-Addo over Mahama, Kpebu admitted that the expectations from the current administration have not been met.

“We thought John Mahama was not good enough; that is why in 2016 we voted out JM thinking that Akufo-Addo was better. But now we’ve discovered that JM was way better,” he noted.

Kpebu underscored his argument by citing the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), noting that Ghana’s score has stagnated at 43 under Akufo-Addo for four consecutive years. This score, he pointed out, was the lowest recorded during Mahama’s tenure.

“Per the Corruption Perception Index, we’ve been at 43 for four years. Now 43 was the lowest the John Mahama administration got. So for four years, President Akufo-Addo’s best fight against corruption has always been at 43. He has plateaued, he can’t be better,” Mr Kpebu explained.

He expressed grave concerns over the frequency of new corruption scandals under the current administration, warning that the situation is likely to deteriorate further in 2024.

“Every day, a new scandal. One day, one scandal. That is why we are very angry. We thought he was Junior Jesus and that Akufo-Addo would live above corruption, not knowing that he is the epitome of corruption,” he stressed.

Ablakwa presents petition to Akufo-Addo over sale of SSNIT hotels

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has successfully petitioned President Akufo-Addo over the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

On Tuesday, June 18, representatives of the President received the petition on behalf of Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.

Reading out the petition, Mr Ablakwa asked the president to halt the sale of the hotels as it was not in the interest of the country. He also called on the president to investigate government officials who deliberately sabotage state institutions in order for politicians to acquire them.

He believes sanctioning and relieving such individuals of their positions will serve as deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, several individuals who partook in today’s protest have been hospitalised.

The protest, organized by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, saw tensions escalate when police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Ablakwa confirmed that some of the injured protesters have been transported to a health facility for treatment.

According to him, some protestors collapsed after being pepper sprayed without provocation. He was not able to indicate the exact hospitals they were sent to. He however noted that he will engage his team and visit the victims at the health centres they have been admitted to

The demonstration aimed to halt the sale of four SSNIT hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, a company owned by Bryan Acheampong.

In a fervent address, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his determination to prevent the sale. “It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen,” he said.

“Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access. These are our assets, and we are saying you haven’t consulted us.”

He further emphasized, “Rest assured, we are confident these hotels will not be sold.”

We don’t condone bullying of small states by big powers – Akufo-Addo at Ukraine Peace Summit

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted the impact of Russia’s invasion on food security in poorer countries.

According to him, “the consequences of the invasion go far beyond the confines of Europe.

Indeed, in many ways, Africa has been the greatest victim,” he said in his remarks.

He called for Russia and China to join in the talks process “if we’re ever going to arrive at a definitive settlement.”

Akufo-Addo said that Ghana opposes “great power hegemony and the bullying of small states by big powers. It is in this context that we view and continue to view Russia’s invasion and acts of aggression.”

Eighty countries, including Ukraine, and four European institutions signed the final joint communiqué at the Switzerland peace summit on June 16, as reported by a Kyiv Independent journalist present at the event.

Ghana’s presidency noted that over 100 countries and organisations participated in the summit.

However, several countries were notably absent from the list of signatories, including India, Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Indonesia, Bahrain, Colombia, South Africa, Thailand, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates.

China did not send representatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged China to join in the development of the peace proposals.

“China could help us,” Zelensky told reporters, adding that though it had close ties with the Kremlin, “Ukraine never said that China is our enemy. I always say that Ukraine has only one enemy: Putin.”

Throughout the full-scale invasion, sales of oil and other hydrocarbons to China and India have become the primary source of funds for Russia’s state budget and war effort.

I will scrap 1V1D, other wasteful projects by NPP – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama Dramani, has vowed to scrap non-essential projects such as the “One Village-One Dam” initiative if elected, redirecting funds towards more profitable ventures to bolster state revenue.

Mahama argues that the country’s current economic difficulties necessitate strategic policymaking, particularly in reducing government spending.

He criticized the incumbent government for its failure to curtail expenses while focusing solely on revenue enhancement.

“This government made many mistakes and we find ourselves in this crisis again and we need to cut down expenditure. This government is not willing to cut expenditure. In a crisis, you slash expenditure and increase revenues.

“All they are doing is increasing revenues but without reducing expenditure. We are going to eliminate all those wasteful projects; One Village-One Dam and all those things that they spent billions on so that we can use that money in the more productive sectors to make the economy grow again. Like Planting for Food and Jobs,” the former president said.

Mahama emphasized, highlighting his plan to eliminate what he deems as wasteful projects to redirect resources into sectors like Planting for Food and Jobs, aimed at revitalizing the economy.

In contrast, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, aspiring to succeed President Akufo-Addo, contends that their administration has prudently managed the economy amidst global challenges, including implementing expenditure cuts.

Speaking at Eid-ul-Adha prayers on June 16, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer acknowledged global economic impacts but stressed progress in steering the economy towards recovery despite setbacks.

“This has led to a series of uncomfortable situations for our citizens. Even though we are not yet where we want to be, which is back to the economic boom we experienced a few years prior to the crisis, data shows that our economy is on the path of recovery.”

He underscored the government’s efforts in reducing general expenditure, citing Finance Ministry data showing a total budgetary allocation of GH₵259 billion.

Amid ongoing economic challenges, there is mounting pressure on the government to downsize and prioritize policies to streamline spending.

May Eid-ul-adha inspire peace, love and mutual respect among us – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended heartfelt well wishes to Ghanaian Muslims on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, urging the citizenry to embrace peaceful co-existence at all times.

In a message posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, June 16, the President emphasized the importance of unity and harmony within the country.

“As you gather with family and friends to mark this sacred day, may this day inspire us all to engender peace, love, and mutual respect within our communities,” President Akufo-Addo advocated.

The President’s message highlighted the significance of Eid-ul-Adha, which commemorates the steadfast faith and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim. He noted that the festival serves as a profound reminder of the values of devotion, compassion, and unity.

“This significant occasion, which commemorates the steadfast faith and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, is a profound reminder of the values of devotion, compassion, and unity,” he stated.

Eid-ul-Adha, celebrated by Muslims worldwide, honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command.

The Islamic holy book, the Quran, in Surah As-Saffat (37:102), recounts how Allah was so pleased with Ibrahim’s submission that He made this demonstration of sacrifice and faith a permanent part of a Muslim’s life.

Each year, Muslims around the world observe the occasion with prayers and the slaughtering of a lamb, sheep, goat, or camel to honor the Prophet’s devotion and obedience.

In Ghana, the national celebration took place at Independence Square in Accra, where prayers were offered for the nation’s progress, unity, and sustainable growth. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia served as the Guest of Honour for the event.

Akufo-Addo’s purported galamsey fight a tactic for public favor – Sulemana Braimah

Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah has critiqued President Akufo-Addo‘s pledge to put his presidency at risk to combat ‘galamsey’ (illegal mining) as a tactic to garner public support.

Braimah, speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, explained that at the time of the president’s statement, the nation was heavily affected by illegal mining, presenting a prime opportunity for the president to start his term on a positive note. He substantiated his claim with a report by Professor Frimpong Boateng, the former chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

On April 20, 2023, Professor Boateng, who also served as the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, revealed that several high-ranking government officials were involved in illegal mining, implicating individuals up to the Jubilee House, the presidential seat.

Braimah argued, “In my view, we lost the battle against ‘galamsey’ long ago.” He suggested that the president’s declaration was more about public posturing than genuine commitment. “You only need to read Professor Boateng’s report to conclude that it was either public deception or politics as usual,” he added during the June 15 interview with host Samson Lardy Anyenini.

Braimah also highlighted the resistance the IMCIM encountered from some legislators and government officials, noting that military protection was provided to some illegal miners during committee visits.

Moreover, Braimah pointed out that visits to forest reserves revealed extensive environmental damage, casting doubt on the president’s commitment. He emphasized that most mining in forest reserves requires presidential approval, questioning how the president could genuinely be committed to combating illegal mining while such activities continue under his administration.

He concluded by questioning the president’s sincerity in addressing the complex issue of illegal mining.

Prominent Ghanaian hiplife artist Sidney Kofi Ofori, known widely as Barima Sidney, has affirmed his unwavering support for Akufo-Addo, whom he endorsed over John Mahama in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

Speaking on Cape Coast’s Property FM, Sidney, who was a frequent performer at New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaign events, emphasized that he stands by his decision despite the current administration’s struggles.

“I’ve consistently said that I have no regrets supporting Akufo-Addo, given his promises at that time,” Sidney remarked. “I don’t share the sentiment of disappointment or regret that some people feel about supporting him.”

He pointed out the challenges faced by the administration, acknowledging both its accomplishments and failures.

Sidney encouraged voters to base their decisions on their personal experiences, as some might be facing difficulties while others are benefiting.

Sidney concluded, “I will never express regret for supporting NPP and Akufo-Addo during those elections. That’s a stance I firmly hold.”

He acknowledged the difficulties the administration has encountered, recognizing both its achievements and shortcomings.

Ghana Beyond Aid has collapsed – Abraham Amaliba

Abraham Amaliba, a private legal practitioner and Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized Akufo-Addo‘s ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ initiative, arguing that it has become ineffective due to heavy borrowing and reliance on donor support by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Mr Amaliba pointed out that despite Ghana receiving medical donations such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and malaria medications, as well as treated mosquito nets from the Global Fund for Community Foundation, these supplies have been stuck at the Tema port for over a year due to government inaction.

Speaking on the TV3 New Day programme, Amaliba expressed dismay over the government’s failure to clear the donated medical supplies promptly.

He emphasized that the delay in clearing these essential items contradicts the ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ mantra, stating, “you, as a government, said Ghana Beyond Aid; that slogan has fallen in [the] water; people are giving you aid so that you can help the ordinary Ghanaians you have refused to go and clear them.”

Furthermore, Amaliba questioned the leadership of the country, expressing bewilderment at how the government is managing national affairs. He criticized the administration’s approach to governance and its impact on delivering crucial healthcare support to ordinary Ghanaians.

He said, “you, as a government, said Ghana Beyond Aid; that slogan has fallen in [the] water; people are giving you aid so that you can help the ordinary Ghanaians you have refused to go and clear them.”

The president’s salary must be taxed – Constitutional Review Consultative Committee

The Constitutional Review Consultative Committee, established by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has made a series of significant recommendations aimed at reforming the executive and legislative branches of the Ghanaian government.

The committee, led by lawyer Clare Kasser-Tee, was tasked with reviewing the 2011 report of the Constitution Review Commission.

Among the committee’s notable recommendations is the proposal that the President of Ghana should pay taxes. This recommendation, if implemented, would reflect the principle of equality before the law and align with the rule of law.

Currently, Article 68(5) of the constitution exempts the president from paying income tax. The committee suggests that this article should be amended so that the president pays taxes on his salary and emoluments, setting an example for the rest of the citizenry.

This change would also require consequential amendments to the country’s income tax law.

In addition, the committee recommended that the number of ministers be capped at 25. Ghana has seen a high number of ministers in recent years, with the current administration under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reaching as many as 110 ministers.

Main candidates in the 2024 presidential election have promised to significantly reduce this number, with former President John Mahama proposing 60 ministers and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia suggesting 50.

The committee also proposed the abolition of Deputy Minister positions. Furthermore, it recommended that ministers should not be Members of Parliament, diverging from the current constitutional mandate that requires the majority of ministers to be lawmakers.

Another key recommendation is to cap the size of Parliament at 277 members. The proposed amendment to Article 93 of the Constitution states, “There shall be a Parliament of Ghana which shall consist of not more than two hundred and seventy-seven elected members.”

These recommendations were presented to Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu on June 13, 2024, for preliminary suggestions or firm resolve for the review of the 1992 Constitution.

The event, themed “Building consensus and promoting ownership for the review of the Constitution,” was organized by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.

The committee’s mandate included reviewing submissions, proposals, and reports from various constitutional review platforms, including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), the University of Ghana Law School, the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

In addition, the committee is tasked with making recommendations to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and its partners and collaborators, including the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), Africa Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), Institute of Democratic and Economic Governance (IDEG), and the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), among others.

The proposed reforms aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Ghana’s governance structures, promoting accountability, and ensuring a more streamlined and representative government.

I’ve worked hard as Veep, it’s time to make me President – Bawumia to Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized his deservingness of becoming Ghana’s president.

According to him, his diligent service as Vice President warrants him the opportunity to be Ghana’s president.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, speaking at the Youth Connect event in the Ashanti Region, highlighted his unmatched work ethic among past Vice Presidents in the nation’s fourth republic.

He asserted, “The reason why I want to become President is that I’ve worked so hard as a Vice President. My work speaks for itself. If you compare the various Vice Presidents under the Fourth Republic, you can tell that my work rate stands out.

“If you ask John Mahama to point out even one policy initiative he spearheaded as Vice President he can’t point out. I have 33 policies I’ve spearheaded. So the score is 33-0. So please promote me to become president because I’ve passed as Vice President,” he said to a charged crowd in the Ashanti Region.

Comparatively, my track record speaks volumes. Among the Vice Presidents of the Fourth Republic, my commitment stands out prominently.”

Drawing a sharp contrast, he challenged his predecessor, stating, “While my initiatives tally up to 33, John Mahama can’t pinpoint even one policy he championed as Vice President. It’s a clear score of 33-0.”

Bawumia underscored the significance of accountability, noting his eight-year window for seeking the people’s mandate versus Mahama’s four years. He stressed the importance of continuous accountability, signaling his readiness to remain answerable to Ghanaians even beyond his current term, contrasting this with what he perceives as a “honeymoon” request from his opponent.

“The reason why I want to become President is that I’ve worked so hard as a Vice President. My work speaks for itself. If you compare the various Vice Presidents under the Fourth Republic, you can tell that my work rate stands out.

  • I sneaked out Akufo-Addo through my father’s back gate to prevent him from being arrested – Nana Yaa Jantuah

I sneaked out Akufo-Addo through my father’s back gate to prevent him from being arrested – Nana Yaa Jantuah

Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has disclosed her role in protecting President Akufo-Addo from potential arrest during their political activism days.

Speaking at a Thought Leadership programme organized by Onua FM on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Madam Jantuah shared insights into her upbringing in a politically active household, where her father and uncles were deeply involved in politics.

She recounted how members of the Movement for Freedom and Justice, a significant political group at the time, frequently convened meetings at her father’s residence in Asokwa, a suburb of Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

During these gatherings, prominent figures such as Paa Willie of the Big Six, Akufo-Addo, Afrifa, and others were in attendance.

Amidst the political fervor of the era, Madam Jantuah found herself entrusted with the custody of important documents belonging to the movement. She vividly recalled moments when the police would raid her father’s home in an attempt to arrest the leadership of the Movement.

In those tense situations, she was tasked with ensuring the safety of Akufo-Addo and other key figures by facilitating their escape through the back gate to evade arrest.

Madam Jantuah revealed that her father emphasized the importance of safeguarding individuals like Akufo-Addo, as they harbored aspirations of assuming the presidency one day.

“I remember the Movement for Freedom and Justice, they used to meet in our house so their documents were in my custody. So whenever I take their documents, my father will tell me that I’ve seen Paa Willie, I have seen Nana Addo, Bomti, my uncle KSP, and will tell me their lives are in my hands so whenever the police come on raid, I will keep the documents and send them away through the back gate,” she recounted.

“So, what they used to do was that, they said Nana Addo was going to be president so he wasn’t supposed to be arrested so whenever the police use the front gate, then I escape with him through the back gate. They used to raid our home in Asokwa. Afrifa and others were all part. So my father always told me to be bold,” she added.

It was considered taboo for someone with such ambitions to be arrested, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the measures taken to protect their political futures.

Recalling those challenging times, Madam Jantuah reflected on her role in ensuring the safety and security of her father’s guests, including Akufo-Addo, amidst the ever-present threat of police raids.

Many years down the line, Nana Akufo-Addo managed to become Ghana’s president after several failed attempts. In 2016, he led the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to beat the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate, John Mahama to become president.

In 2020, he was re-elected President and is expected to hand over power on January 7, 2025.

Underlining the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) inability to match their achievements, Mr Kodua highlighted the NPP’s completion of approximately 12,000 kilometers of roads, a stark contrast to the NDC’s 4,000 kilometers during former President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s political show “Dwabrem,” Mr Kodua emphasized the NPP’s dedication to national development through prudent resource management.

In a live interview on Monday, June 10, 2024, Kodua boasts of his government’s unparalleled accomplishments in infrastructure, particularly in the road sector, marking it as unprecedented in Ghana’s history.

Encouraging Ghanaians to recognize the NPP’s achievements, Kodua urges voters to consider retaining the party in power during the 2024 elections.

“NPP under President Akufo-Addo’s regime has constructed about 12,000 kilometres of roads compared to 4,000 kilometres completed by the main opposition NDC, and this shows NPP’s commitment to developing the country.”

“One political party constructed 4,000 kilometres; the NPP now has about 12,000 kilometres. This is three times what our opponent did, and we have achieved this due to the prudent management of the meagre resources we inherited,” he said.

Akufo-Addo has passed the begging bowl to South Korea – Economist reacts to $2bn agreement

Renowned US economist, Professor Steve Hanke, has criticized president Akufo-Addo’s continuous reliance on borrowing from international communities rather than implementing sustainable economic reforms to salvage the economy.

Taking to the X platform, he argued that such agreements only deepen Ghana’s debt burden and fail to address fundamental economic challenges.

#SaveGhanaNow: Ghana recently secured a $2bn framework agreement with South Korea. Pres. Akufo-Addo passes Ghana’s BEGGING BOWL – ONCE AGAIN,” he wrote.

His comment comes after Ghana recently secured a significant boost for its developmental initiatives through the signing of a $2 billion framework arrangement with South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

The agreement, formalized on the sidelines of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, is set to boost the implementation of Ghana’s key priority programs spanning various sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, energy, roads and transport, as well as ICT over the next five years.

This milestone signing ceremony marks a reaffirmation of the enduring bilateral economic development partnership between the two nations.

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, represented the government, while Mr. Cho Tae-yeol, the Foreign Minister for Korea, signed on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Korea.

The event was attended by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, alongside other dignitaries from both countries.

Meanwhile, on Friday, February 3, 2023, President Akufo-Addo urged Germany to play a facilitating role in encouraging China, an ad hoc member of the Paris Club, to support Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.

During a meeting with the visiting German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, at the Jubilee House in Accra, Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of the Paris Club swiftly establishing a creditors committee, with the participation of other official creditors, to assist Ghana in its efforts to restore economic growth.

Mr Lindner, leading a delegation from Germany, engaged in bilateral discussions with President Akufo-Addo aimed at enhancing relations and economic cooperation between the two countries.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his government’s primary focus on concluding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), particularly at the Board Level, and finalizing a deal with the Bretton Woods institution by mid-March of the same year.

Give us immediate and enduring solutions to ‘Dumsor,’ – #DumsorMustStop campaigners to Akufo-Addo

The #DumsorMustStop campaigners have called on President Akufo-Addo to prioritize addressing the ongoing erratic power supply in the country.

They argue that the issue, commonly known as ‘Dumsor,’ is significantly affecting various sectors of the economy.

In their petition to the President, the campaigners emphasized the need for both immediate and long-term solutions to this problem. The petition, seen by 3news.com, highlights the urgency of the situation.

The petitioners began their protest at the University of Ghana and gathered at the Tetteh Quarshie interchange.

They wielded placards with inscriptions such as, “Napo, Dumsor is killing our dreams,” “Dumsor Kills Businesses,” “Electricity is a right” and “Dumsor no more, we deserve better,” among others.

    Comedian DKB addressing journalists

“Your Excellency, Mr. President, and Dr. Prempeh, we urge you to prioritize this issue with the urgency it demands. We need transparent and effective solutions to ensure a stable and reliable power supply for all Ghanaians. We implore you to take the following actions:

    1. Immediate Measures; Implement short-term strategies to mitigate the current power shortages and provide relief to affected areas.
    2. Long-term Solutions: Develop and communicate a comprehensive plan to upgrade and expand our power infrastructure, incorporating sustainable energy sources to prevent future occurrences of Dumsor.
    3. Accountability: Ensure transparency in the management of our energy resources and hold those responsible for inefficiencies accountable,” parts of the petition read.

The protesters emphasised that “Ghana has the potential to be a beacon of progress and development in Africa, but we cannot achieve this if we are constantly hindered by power crisis. We are confident that with decisive action and commitment, we can overcome this challenge and build a brighter future for our nation. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to your prompt response and to seeing tangible improvements in our power supply situation.

They listed sectors which are most affected by Dumsor as follows:

    1. Healthcare: Our hospitals are struggling to provide adequate care, especially during critical moments such as childbirth. The lack of reliable power supply puts both mothers and newborns at risk, undermining our healthcare system and endangering lives.
    2. Businesses; Entrepreneurs and businesses, from small vendors to large enterprises, are experiencing significant operational challenges due to the inconsistent power supply. This is leading to financial losses, layoffs, and, in some cases, the closure of businesses. Our economy cannot thrive under such conditions.
    3. Daily Life: The constant power outages are disrupting the daily lives of Ghanaians, affecting education, productivity, and overall well-being. It is a source of frustration and despair for many, eroding the trust and confidence that citizens have in our leadership.

He credited the achievement to the unwavering support of the Ghanaian people, speaking at the Green Ghana Day ceremony at Burma Camp.

“In the last three years, with your unwavering support, we have planted some 42 million trees, most of which are thriving. Today we have an opportunity to add at least 10 million trees.”

It is unknown if all these 42 million trees planted have survived.

President Akufo-Addo noted that reaching this milestone would bring the total number of trees planted to an impressive 52 million in just four years.

He hailed this as an incredible achievement, highlighting the collective effort and commitment of Ghanaians and all contributors to the program’s success. The President also praised the Minister of Lands and Minerals Resources, Samuel Jinapor, for spearheading the initiative.

“I thank you, my fellow Ghanaians, and anyone who has contributed to the success of this programme.”

He also expressed confidence in surpassing this year’s target with the same level of support and dedication that has driven the initiative thus far.

The Green Ghana Day event is part of a nationwide effort to restore the country’s forest cover, combat climate change, and enhance the natural environment.

Since its inception in 2021, the initiative has garnered widespread participation from various sectors, including schools, religious organizations, and community groups.

Akufo-Addo preaches a greener future as Ghana plants 10 million trees today

President Akufo-Addo has delivered a passionate speech at Burma Camp, Accra, on Friday, June 7, to commemorate the 2024 edition of Green Ghana Day, advocating for a greener future.

Addressing the assembled dignitaries, officials, and citizens, the President stressed the urgent need to combat climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, emphasizing the vital role forests play in this effort.

Highlighting the severe impacts of climate change, President Akufo-Addo pointed to the critical situation in South Sudan and the Horn of Africa, where extreme heatwaves are threatening human habitation.

He noted that air pollution causes approximately 6.7 million deaths annually and that biodiversity loss continues to jeopardize ecosystems worldwide.

“The science tells us that forests play a crucial role in sustaining life on earth and tackling the triple planetary crises,” the President stated.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted that Agriculture, Forest, and Land Use (AFOLU) activities significantly contribute to Ghana’s greenhouse gas emissions.

He emphasized the crucial role of forests in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and pollution control.

Since the inception of the Green Ghana Project, over 42 million trees have been planted, and the goal for 2024 is to add another 10 million, bringing the total to 52 million trees in just four years.

This ambitious target aligns with Ghana’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 64 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030.

President Akufo-Addo called on all Ghanaians to embrace the theme of this year’s Green Ghana Day, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”

President Akufo-Addo urged citizens from all walks of life to participate in the national tree planting exercise, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the planted trees to maturity to achieve a sustainable future.

He also called on the private sector to support this noble venture, stressing that it should not be a burden on the public treasury.

Special commendation was given to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, for his leadership in sustaining the Green Ghana Project and the One Student One Tree initiative, which instills the importance of environmental stewardship in the youth.

The President concluded by calling for a collective effort to sustain the gains made over the past three years.

“Let us go out, not only to plant trees, but grow them for a ‘Green Tomorrow.’ This is a duty we owe not only to the current generation but to generations yet to come,” he declared.

In his address, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, praised President Akufo-Addo’s unwavering support for the Green Ghana initiative. He highlighted the President’s leadership in environmental protection and forest restoration since the program’s inception in 2021.

Mr. Jinapor expressed gratitude to the Ghana Armed Forces for their vital role in the program’s organizational success, particularly in the logistics and distribution of seedlings. He also announced their contribution of planting over 1,000 tree seedlings as part of their quota to support the 2024 Green Ghana Day.

The Minister outlined Ghana’s significant strides in global forest management and climate action. At COP26 in Glasgow, Ghana played a pivotal role in the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030.

This leadership has been recognized globally, leading to Ghana co-chairing the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP) alongside the United States. This partnership aims to balance forest protection with food production and advance nature-based climate solutions.

Highlighting the impact of these initiatives, Jinapor noted that Ghana was the second country in Africa and the third globally to receive results-based payments from the World Bank’s Carbon Fund for reducing emissions.

The Green Ghana Day has become a cornerstone of these efforts, with the survival rate of planted trees increasing significantly each year, from 67% in 2021 to 81% in 2023. This year’s theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” reflects the commitment to not just planting trees but ensuring their growth and contribution to the fight against climate change, he added.

The Minister called on all Ghanaians to support the initiative, emphasizing the availability of adequate seedlings across the country and the measures in place to ensure high survival rates for the planted trees. He echoed the President’s call for collective action to secure a greener and more sustainable future for the country and the planet.

With this rallying call, President Akufo-Addo and Minister Jinapor reinforced Ghana’s commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future.

Mr. John Allotey, the CEO of the Forestry Commission in his vote of thanks appreciated the President for his immense support and guidance over the 4year Green Ghana Day and applauded the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for his excellent leadership that has aided in the success of this worthy cause.

According to him, although the current government acknowledges its shortcomings, it is working tirelessly to do better in the future.

Making an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrooko Show he touted some of government’s achievements, emphasising that while it has played a role in national development, its contributions have been partial rather than complete.

He noted that out of 94,000km road infrastructure, the government has repaired 12,000km of road networks. This he said can be better.

He added that politicians should embrace accountability by acknowledging their mistakes, addressing the challenges they face, and actively seek solutions.

“Nevertheless, there is still much to be done, and we have the capability to accomplish more. We also recognize our shortcomings in nationwide hospital construction. UG Prof. charges Bawumia to “convince” Akufo-Addo into removing e-levy

Vice President Bawumia has been challenged by Professor Kobby Mensah of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) to use his power to persuade President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to axe a contentious tax item.

The University of Ghana lecturer was responding to Bawumia’s recent declaration that he played a major role in persuading President Akufo-Addo to grant particular exemptions for dialysis treatment.

On June 3, during his Central Regional presidential campaign tour, Bawumia made an announcement to a group of clergymen about the free dialysis treatment that would be available to people under the age of 18 and those over 60 starting this month through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“If you managed to speak to the President to agree on free dialysis while you are still a Veep, then you can also speak to him to agree on the Tax cuts you mentioned you would make when you come to power. “Please convince the President to agree to abolishing E-levy,” Prof. Mensah posted on X.

With the exception of transactions that are legally excluded, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) defines the E-Levy as a levy on all electronic money transfers.

One percent is the fixed rate.

The government made the decision to impose electronic transfers in order to increase domestic revenue collection, broaden the tax base, and give everyone a chance to support the advancement of the country.

The levy was passed in a contentious manner and has since fallen short of the projected amount of money.

Free dialysis is being offered to certain kidney patients by the NHIS.

National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) states that from June 1, 2024, until December 20, 2024, those with kidney disorders who are over 60 and under 18 years old will be entitled to eight free dialysis sessions per month.

National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) announced this project to commemorate the program’s 20 years of existence.

This endeavour is an essential part of the anniversary celebrations, as confirmed by a statement from Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, the acting chief executive officer of NHIA.

According to the NHIA’s 2024 Allocation Formula, GH¢2,000,000.00 has been authorised by the parliament and sanctioned by the Ghanaian government.

The objective is to support underprivileged and financially struggling people who require dialysis treatments.

Furthermore, the NHIA has allocated an additional GH‘2,400,000.00 from its approved Corporate Social Responsibility budget to assist this noteworthy health intervention.

“As part of NHIA’s 20th Anniversary, the NHIA, through administrative arrangements, has allocated an additional GH¢2,400,000.00, under the Corporate Social Responsibility approved budget of the scheme to support this initiative,” the statement said.

The report also stated that, following the verification of patients currently undergoing dialysis, the monthly cost for those within the specified categories is estimated at GH¢329,952.

By the conclusion of December 2024, the total expenditure is anticipated to reach approximately GH¢2.3 million.

During an exclusive interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse show on Friday, May 31, 2024, the Effutu legislator debunked allegations that the Minority Leader is being persecuted due to his consistent criticisms of the government, stating that such claims are entirely unfounded.

“It is unfounded to suggest that individuals are being prosecuted solely because of their criticism of the government.

Haruna Iddrisu was highly critical of the government, yet he was not subjected to government prosecution regarding the double salary issue,” he clarified.

“If the government intended to prosecute opposition MPs for criticizing them, then figures like Haruna Iddrisu, Armah Kofi Buah, Mahama Ayariga, and others would have faced legal action over the double salary issue,” he added.

The Majority Leader highlighted that the double salary issue was a straightforward matter that could have led to the imprisonment of many NDC MPs, but President Akufo-Addo chose to resolve it by having them reimburse the funds instead of facing trial.

He explained that the President opted not to send a significant number of political figures to court for fear of tarnishing Parliament’s image and causing public discontent towards the political class.

Therefore, the decision was made to allow MPs who received double salaries to repay them.

He urged Ghanaians to dismiss claims that individuals are being prosecuted over ambulance matters due to their consistent criticisms of the Akufo-Addo administration.

Reports indicated that approximately 48 Members of Parliament who served as ministers under the previous NDC administration were alleged to have received double salaries.

This led to an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, citing their actions as contrary to Section 124 (1) of the Criminal and Other Offence Act 1960 (Act 29) as amended in 2012, Act 849, which pertains to the offense of stealing.

Some of the NDC MPs named in the double salary issue included Alban Bagbin, Haruna Iddrisu, E.T. Mensah, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah, Eric Opoku, Inusah Fuseini, Mahama Ayariga, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, Alhassan Azong, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, among others.
