  • Mahama vows to set-up district mining offices in all mining areas nationwide – Mahama on galamsey

Mahama vows to set-up district mining offices in all mining areas nationwide – Mahama on galamsey

Former President John Dramani Mahama has strongly criticized the Akufo-Addo administration, alleging mishandling of Ghana’s mining sector.

Speaking at the ‘3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale mining,’ Mahama accused the government of neglecting the needs of small-scale miners, resulting in equipment confiscations and even loss of lives.

Mahama outlined a comprehensive plan to revamp the sector, starting with the establishment of district mining offices across mining areas.

These offices, staffed with officials from relevant agencies, aim to streamline licensing processes and enhance transparency.

“To support these efforts, we plan to amend the Minerals and Mining Act to grant district mining offices a legal mandate to issue mining licenses. This would decentralise the licensing regime and increase the number of regulated small-scale mining companies and youth employment, particularly under the 24-hour economy policy,” he said.

“As part of our broader economic transformation model and a burning commitment to creating more sustainable and decent jobs for the Ghanaian youth, my administration intends to ensure the active involvement of mining engineers and graduates from the University of Mines and Technology and the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani, in the small-scale mining sector, creating opportunities for them. These professionals will be attached to the newly created district mining offices and small-scale operators to provide guidance and support.”

Additionally, Mahama proposed amendments to the Minerals and Mining Act to empower these offices to issue licenses, decentralizing the system and boosting youth employment.

In a bid to integrate expertise and foster sustainable practices, Mahama pledged to involve mining professionals from universities in the sector.

“One of the impacts of illegal mining, including galamsey, has been the destruction of forests and cocoa farms. We will protect the destruction of cocoa farms for mining and effectively ban the issuance of entry permits into forests. Mining in water bodies will be outrightly prohibited. Recognising the invaluable role of traditional leaders in our society and as a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and respect for all stakeholders, I intend to have traditional leaders included in the crucial process of granting mining licenses in their communities.

“Therefore, we must strengthen regulatory institutions such as the Minerals Commission, the EPA, the Geological Survey Authority, and the Natural Resources Universities to further this.

“This will involve laws, policies, regulatory enforcement, and education. Miners must be aware of the regulations and their reasons. They must be partners in this transforma>on and not adversaries.

“It is also my vision to reform the mining sector structurally. Ghana’s small-scale mining sector is perhaps the only economic sector with only two categories—small and large. Some mines within the small-scale category have grown beyond ‘small’ but are not large enough to qualify as large-scale. My government will structurally reform the entire mining sector through a comprehensive re-categorisation into Small-scale (SSM), Medium-scale (MSM), and Large-scale (LSM), each with specifically tailored operational, environmental, and safety requirements,” he said.

This move aligns with his vision of creating more jobs for Ghanaian youth while promoting responsible mining practices.

Highlighting environmental concerns, Mahama vowed to protect cocoa farms and forests from mining activities, with strict prohibitions on mining in water bodies.

He also emphasized the inclusion of traditional leaders in the licensing process, aiming for a collaborative approach with all stakeholders.

Mahama criticized the current aggressive tactics against illegal mining, labeling them unsustainable and prone to exploitation by some political actors.

He proposed a structural overhaul of the mining sector, advocating for categorization into Small-scale, Medium-scale, and Large-scale operations, each with tailored regulations for operational, environmental, and safety standards.

Mahama’s proposals signal a comprehensive strategy to address longstanding issues in Ghana’s mining sector, aiming for sustainability, inclusivity, and responsible practices.

Small-scale miners have endured enough government mishandling of the sector – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has launched a scathing critique against the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing them of mishandling Ghana’s mining sector.

Speaking at the ‘3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining,’ Mahama highlighted the plight of small-scale miners, citing equipment confiscations and tragic loss of lives.

Mahama unveiled a detailed plan to rejuvenate the sector, starting with the establishment of district mining offices in key mining areas. These offices, staffed with personnel from various agencies, aim to streamline licensing procedures and enhance transparency.

Additionally, Mahama proposed amendments to the Minerals and Mining Act, granting these offices the authority to issue licenses, thereby decentralizing the system and fostering job creation.

“To support these efforts, we plan to amend the Minerals and Mining Act to grant district mining offices a legal mandate to issue mining licenses. This would decentralize the licensing regime and increase the number of regulated small-scale mining companies and youth employment, particularly under the 24-hour economy policy,” he said.

These professionals will be attached to the newly created district mining offices and small-scale operators to provide guidance and support.”

To harness expertise and promote sustainable practices, Mahama pledged to involve mining professionals from universities in sector operations. This initiative aligns with his vision of generating more opportunities for Ghanaian youth while advocating for responsible mining techniques.

Addressing environmental concerns, Mahama pledged to safeguard cocoa farms and forests from mining activities, with strict bans on mining in water bodies. He also stressed the inclusion of traditional leaders in the licensing process, emphasizing collaboration among stakeholders.

“One of the impacts of illegal mining, including galamsey, has been the destruction of forests and cocoa farms. Mahama criticized the current aggressive anti-illegal mining tactics as unsustainable and potentially exploitative by certain political entities. He proposed a structural overhaul of the mining sector, advocating for categorization into Small-scale, Medium-scale, and Large-scale operations, each with customized regulations for operational, environmental, and safety standards.

Mahama’s proposals signal a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing longstanding challenges within Ghana’s mining sector, with a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and responsible governance.

  • Ghana was in a much better shape during Mahama’s administration – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Ghana was in a much better shape during Mahama’s administration – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, an aide to ex-President John Dramani Mahama, has lauded the achievements of the former President during his tenure.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV’s Face to Face, Kwakye Ofosu highlighted the significant infrastructural developments made under Mahama’s leadership compared to the current administration’s seven-year term.

When comparing Mahama‘s administration to Akufo-Addo‘s tenure, Kwakye Ofosu argued that conditions were notably better under the former President than what Ghanaians are currently experiencing.

He maintained that former President Mahama outperformed the NPP government in every performance metric.

“Our debt was manageable, we were not bankrupt as an economy, and other indices showed that things were not as bad as we have now. As of 2016, when he [Mahama] was leaving office, the country was in much better shape.

“If you look at all sectors of the economy, he has made massive investments to ensure that Ghanaian children have access to education. If you look at health, people still credit him [Mahama] for how we were able to survive COVID-19. But for the investments that he made in the expansive health infrastructure, there was no way we were going to weather the storm, so far as COVID-19 was concerned.

“We have had perennial power difficulty which lasted for decades, we had experienced power outages in the 80s, it happened in the 90s, early 200s under former President J.A Kufour. He took a bold step to ensure that he put in the investments to curtail that difficulty. And made it impossible for generation capacity to be a reason why we would go into power outages.

“Look at the communication sector, water, ICT space. By the time [former] President Mahama left office, 76% of Ghanaians had access to potable water, and that figure has dipped. Because this government has failed to replicate that kind of investment. In almost every sector of our national lives, things were much better than we have today.”

He pointed out that Mr. Mahama acted promptly in dismissing his appointees accused of corruption, while President Akufo-Addo consistently shields his corrupt appointees.

“His [Mahama’s] worst performance in the corruption perception index is better than the best performance of this government. If you look at his proactivity, the zeal at which he went after the people who were alleged to be corrupt under him. You remember the stalwart of NDC, Abuga Pele’s case, in many ways, he was a friend to former President Mahama, but he didn’t hesitate to put him out before the court when allegations of graft were made against him.

“You saw the swiftness in which he acted in Victora Hammah’s case… he immediately fired her, that has not been the case of this current government. President Akufo-Addo has been all too willing to shield corruption appointees.

“He made it impossible for the anti-corruption bodies to do meaningful work, because he prejudices the outcome of an investigation, and he has flatly refused to punish persons who are known to have engaged in corruption. So, there’s no basis for comparison between the NPP and anything former president Mahama did while in office. Former President Mahama on every important indicator completely outperformed the NPP government.”

Ghana had only one fire training school until Akufo-Addo took office in 2017 – Joe Ghartey

During the celebration of International Firefighters’ Day on May 3, 2024, at the Western Regional headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service in Fijai, the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan Constituency, Joe Ghartey, commended the notable progress in fire training schools under President Akufo-Addo‘s administration.

Mr Ghartey highlighted the transformation from having only one fire training school since independence to the establishment of three more under Akufo-Addo’s leadership since 2017.

“Since assuming office, President Akufo-Addo has overseen the establishment of three more fire training schools, and the government is about to start a fourth one,” he said.

“plans are far advanced to acquire land for the establishment of a specialized training facility for the Fire Service at Essikado.”

“These developments are remarkable and represent a quantum leap in the provision of training infrastructure for the Ghana National Fire Service.”

Mr Ghartey emphasized the significance of these developments, stating that plans were underway to commence a fourth fire training school and acquire land for a specialized training facility in Essikado.

He emphasized the substantial improvement in training infrastructure for the Ghana National Fire Service and urged Ghanaians to acknowledge and support the achievements of the NPP administration.

Mr Ghartey underscored the administration’s commitment to expanding fire training facilities, noting the significant strides made within the past eight years.

Highlighting the dynamic landscape of political allegiance, Mr. Awuku, a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasized how the fusion of emotions and personal relationships influences individuals’ decisions to align with and support political organizations.

Additionally, Mr Awuku unveiled a mobilization strategy employed during his leadership, wherein financial incentives were distributed to rally party supporters.

“I recall during my tenure as the NPP’s youth organiser, Akufo-Addo would allocate funds to me, which I utilized to mobilize and support party members,”he  recounted.

You are likely to receive your allowances this week – Bawumia tells Nursing trainees

The Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that pending nursing trainee allowances for 2024 will soon be disbursed to nursing and teacher trainees nationwide.

These allowances, initially revoked by the previous Mahama administration but reinstated by the Akufo-Addo government, have faced delays for several months.

Addressing a sizable gathering of youth, including nursing and teacher trainees, in Nalerigu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia shared the news to resounding applause.

“On the nursing training allowance, we have been able to agree on what to do come this Thursday,”Dr. Bawumia said, as the crowd cheered.

“The Minister of Finance has sent me a message which says that on Thursday, the Controller and Accountant General is going to transfer 177 million Ghana Cedis to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health will transfer it to the Nursing trainees,”he said.

“So I believe that, in shaa Allah, by next week, all of you should be receiving the nursing trainee allowances, and they will be in your accounts.’

Dr. Bawumia’s revelation electrified the audience, particularly the nursing trainees, who openly expressed their jubilation, echoing his name in appreciation.

Following this announcement, Dr. Bawumia underscored the NPP’s commitment to supporting nursing and teacher trainees, contrasting it with the cancellation of these allowances by the NDC under Mahama’s leadership.

“The NPP has demonstrated clearly that it is the party which cares for the youth and have you at heart, through many of our policies, which support you,” he said.

“My opponent in December and his party, the NDC, cancelled the nursing and teacher trainee allowances. But we came in and restored it. We are committed to it and I am very committed to it that is why I have been following up on it,” he added.

  • Female judges bring valuable strengths to Judiciary – Akufo-Addo

Female judges bring valuable strengths to Judiciary – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo underscored the vital role played by female judges in combating detrimental cultural practices, particularly those hindering the development of women and girls.

He emphasized that the diverse experiences of female judges uniquely position them to contribute distinct perspectives and strengths to the pursuit of justice and equity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 18th International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) Conference in Accra, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the theme “Combating Negative Cultural Practices in Contemporary Times – The Role of Women Judges.”

He emphasized that having women represented at all levels of the judicial system not only enhances respect for the judiciary but also instills confidence in the justice delivery system.

“Women judges across Africa and the globe bring unique viewpoints and strengths to the judiciary.

Their experiences, often mirroring the societal challenges we seek to overcome, equip them uniquely to advocate for justice and fairness.”

The President stressed that addressing negative cultural practices requires a collaborative effort beyond the courtroom, involving education, awareness, and governance.

He urged female judges to uphold fairness, equality, and justice in their decisions, emphasizing the profound impact their rulings can have on societal transformation.

President Akufo-Addo envisioned a future where the law serves not only to punish but also to educate and reform, ensuring a society where individuals are judged based on their potential rather than conformity to outdated customs.

He concluded by highlighting the essential role of the IAWJ in empowering women judges worldwide to promote gender equality, end discriminatory laws, and uphold human rights.

“As judges and upholders of the law, you have the power to redefine norms and set precedents that protect the vulnerable and marginalised,” he said.

“In dealing with issues like gender-based violence, child marriage, widowhood rites and female genital mutilation – practices steeped in deep-rooted cultural norms – your voices and rulings can resonate deeply, driving societal transformation.”

“It is imperative to acknowledge that the fight against these practices is not confined to the courtrooms. Education, awareness, and collaborative governance are critical.

“We must engage traditional leaders, educators, and communities to recalibrate mindsets and attitudes. It is in our schools, homes, and community gatherings where the foundational beliefs of our next generation are formed,” he said.

  • Akufo-Addo now indifferent to Ghanaians wrath – Amaliba

Akufo-Addo now indifferent to Ghanaians wrath – Amaliba

Director of Conflict Resolution and former Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, expressed his concern over the Akufo-led NPP government’s apparent lack of fear regarding public opinion.

He was particularly dismayed by revelations made at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting on Thursday, May 9, regarding the payment of US$11 million to a contractor for the Pwalugu multipurpose dam project, despite no visible progress at the site.

Amaliba described the site as “a grassland” with no work done.

The Pwalugu project, a flagship initiative of the current government, includes components for power generation, irrigation, and flood control.

Speaking on The Big Issue on TV3 on Friday, the private legal practitioner and NDC communicator stressed that Ghanaians should be more vocal in expressing their dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government.

“Yesterday, listening to the public accounts committee, I cringed when I heard 11 million dollars was paid to a contractor for the completion of the Pwaulu Multipurpose Dam.

Yet when you go to that place, it is grassland. And you wonder why criminals who have taken over the reins of government would do this to mother Ghana.

“Aren’t you angry? You have a situation where money is paid to a contractor and you get to the site, there is nothing there, and you say I shouldn’t describe them as thieves,” he said.

“I am of the view that, as a country, we have not lived up to expectations as a people. When a government gets to a point where it doesn’t fear the wrath of the people, this is what happens.

Governments must always be afraid of the people…but you get to a point where the government does not fear the wrath of the people, you have these things happening.”

He added, “You give 11 million dollars out as the final payment and yet there is not a single block laid at the place.”

Construction activities began in November 2019 after President Akufo-Addo ceremonially initiated the project. Subsequently, Parliament approved the project on February 26, 2020.

Financed by the Government of Ghana, the project is expected to be completed within approximately fifty (50) months.

‘Forced’ to eat fufu without soup – Asiedu Nketia on commissioning of uncompleted Kumasi Airport

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised concerns about the recent commissioning of the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi by President Akufo-Addo.

Despite the elaborate ceremony, Nketia expressed confusion over the decision to inaugurate a project that is still under construction.

He emphasised the imprudence of opening a facility that is not yet fully operational and suggested that President Akufo-Addo should have waited until the airport was completed before declaring it open to the public.

“If it had been completed, aeroplanes would have landed there. It’s like making fufu without soup and asking us to eat,” he said in an Instagram video posted by Nana Yaa Brefo, host of the Yen Nsempa Morning show on Onua FM.

“There are bulldozers working everywhere, and you’re telling me it’s finished,” he exclaimed, questioning the legitimacy of the commissioning ceremony.

According to the NDC Chairman, the premature commissioning of the airport reflects a political agenda aimed at garnering favour rather than addressing the practical needs of the people.

“I’ve already mentioned that the president’s judgement should be examined,” Nketia remarked pointedly.

On May 10, 2024, the Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi was officially opened.
The airport’s interior is meticulously arranged into various operational areas, with many staircase walls crafted from glass to provide a visually appealing ambiance.

Welcoming visitors at the entrance is the sign “Nante Yie,” symbolising a “safe journey.”

This airport is expected to elevate the international profile of the Ashanti Region and contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the local community.

No govt has enhanced judiciary infrastructure than mine – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has lauded his government’s unprecedented achievements in enhancing judicial infrastructure.

He expressed this sentiment during the inauguration of the 2024 Africa Conference of the International Association of Women Judges.

Under the theme “The Role of Women Judges in Combatting Negative Cultural Practices in Contemporary Times,” the conference provided a platform to discuss crucial issues surrounding gender equality and judicial activism.

Addressing the jurists, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that investing in judicial infrastructure is crucial to realizing the conference’s theme.

“Indeed, since I assumed office in 2017, my government has made unprecedented progress in the provision of court buildings and residences for judges around the country.

“In 2020, we set out to construct 100 courthouses with residential facilities nationwide. As of February 2024, seventy-nine courthouses have been successfully inaugurated and are in use in various parts of the country. The remaining 21 projects are at various stages of completion and are expected to be completed and inaugurated soon, at least before I leave office,” he stated.

In her remarks, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo welcomed members of the association and acknowledged the president’s support, praising his commitment to democracy.

“We appreciate the strong support we have received from the office of the president. The co-rumination of this support is the presence of His Excellency with us this morning who will officially be opening this conference.

“His Excellency is a lawyer and champion of justice and his name is definably hatched in the legal history of this country as the most distinguished legal practitioner. His belief in the rule of law has been evident during his tenure as president and the judicial service of Ghana has been a beneficiary of the exceptional level of physical and technological infrastructure during this period,” she added.

Money invested in National Cathedral could have addressed educational challenges – Clement Apaak

The ranking member on the parliament’s committee on education, Clement Apaak, has stated that the funds allocated to the National Cathedral project could have been better utilized to address infrastructure challenges within the education sector.

During an interview with TV3, Dr. Apaak emphasized that despite the paramount importance of the education sector, it has not received the necessary attention under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

He criticized the government’s failure to prioritize effectively.

Dr. Apaak pointed out that the significant investment in the National Cathedral, a project deemed non-urgent, could have instead been directed towards providing a conducive learning environment for school children across the nation.

“I think it’s an issue of prioritization, for example, look at the quantum of money stake in public resources invested towards the construction of the National Cathedral.

“If those monies were to be applied to procure furniture I believe we would have been talking about millions of pieces of furniture procured and distributed but Akufo-Addo and his government prioritised the construction of the Cathedral which has been described now as the most expensive on the surface of the earth,” he added.

He noted the alarming statistic of over 5,000 schools operating under trees in Ghana.

The Builsa South lawmaker also criticized the persistence of this issue under the current administration, contrasting it with the efforts of the previous Mahama administration, which he claimed had made substantial progress in eradicating schools under trees.

Furthermore, Dr. Apaak highlighted the unacceptable reality of approximately 1 million pupils in Ghana having to sit on the floor to learn.

“What that means is that about one million of our wards go to school every day and they have to sit on the floor or sit on blocks to study. That clearly cannot be acceptable.”

He expressed confidence that his flagbearer, Former President John Dramani Mahama, would address furniture deficits in basic schools to tackle this issue effectively.

Akufo-Addo is a morally bereft short man! – Barker-Vormawor goes ‘wild’ over treason case

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the #FixTheCountry convener, has directed insults at President Akufo-Addo regarding the treason trial he is facing after being charged 2 years ago.

The trial was expected to address jurisdiction following a motion by Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers challenging the constitutionality of the offence and requesting the judge to refer the issue to the Supreme Court.

However, the trial has been adjourned to May 20 this year.

In preparation for Monday’s proceedings, Barker-Vormawor called on members of the #FixTheCountry movement to show support at court. Nevertheless, the trial did not proceed as planned due to the judge’s ongoing training programme.

Ranting on social media ahead of today’s trial, Barker-Vormawor noted that he does not “want the Attorney-General to file any Nolle Prosequi in this matter” since “he has committed two years to it.”

“I want them to continue the shambolic process they have set in motion. For everyone to see what a sham of a democracy this regime has made Ghana.

“Your President is a morally bereft Short man with the ego of a child lacking growth hormones. No amount of treason trials will obscure the fact of his ineptitude or weak ego! I will be in Court today to answer “Not Guilty Your Dishonour,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Barker-Vormawor was arrested and charged after a social media post that police investigators claimed contained a clear intent to subvert Ghana’s constitution.

He was detained on February 11, 2022, at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from the United Kingdom.

Member of Parliament for Builsa South , Dr. Clement Apaak, has highlighted the alarming reality of over 5,000 schools currently operating under trees in Ghana.

He criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for allowing this situation to persist, contrasting it with the efforts of the previous Mahama administration, which he claimed had nearly eradicated schools under trees.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues, Dr. Apaak underscored another pressing issue: the shortage of furniture in basic schools, affecting approximately 1 million pupils who are forced to study while seated on the floor.

He emphasized that Former President John Dramani Mahama, his party’s flagbearer, would prioritize addressing this furniture deficit to improve the learning environment in basic schools.

President Akufo-Addo has pointed out that Ghana’s aviation sector has made a strong comeback after the disruptions caused by COVID-19.

He attributes this rebound to the surge in air passenger traffic for both domestic and international flights.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi on Friday, May 10, 2024, he highlighted the significant growth in air passenger numbers.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to position Ghana as a key aviation hub in the region and beyond.

He urged concerted efforts from everyone involved to sustain this positive momentum in the sector.

“Ghana has experienced a considerable overall growth in air passenger traffic onboard domestic and international routes. At the end of 2023, international passenger traffic comprised 2,914,661 persons compared to the 2019 through port of 2,328,758 persons representing a 25% increase. Domestic passenger traffic on its part increased from 690,314 persons in 2019 to 775,662 persons at the end of 2023,” he said.

“This data means that the aviation sector has recovered fully from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and is back on track for growth. My government will continue to pay the needed attention to enable the sector to compete fairly with our neighbouring countries in the West African region and beyond.”

“It is therefore important that all stakeholders come onboard and play their respective roles towards making Ghana an aviation hub in the region.” President Akufo-Addo added.

Akufo-Addo seeks AU support for reparations initiative

Ghana has announced its intention to lobby the African Union (AU) to garner backing for a pan-continental initiative aimed at bolstering the call for reparations related to the transatlantic slave trade.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of building bridges and fostering unity within the community to address the reparations issue effectively.

He underscored the need to create a powerful and unified voice that would compel action and lead to consequential decisions.

“It is time that the Caribbean and those of us on the other side of the Atlantic get together on this matter because it is a common fight,” he stated while addressing the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley, at the Jubilee House, Accra.

The President stressed the need to work towards a strategy that would compel the perpetrators of the trans-Atlantic slave trade “to be able to sit down across the table with us and talk about how we can achieve our goals.”

As part of his visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley paid a courtesy call on the President. His visit coincided with the invitation to celebrate the 25th anniversary of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ascension to the throne as the Asantehene of the Asante Kingdom.

Dr. Rowley, known for his advocacy for an international entity like an AU-Caribbean body, seeks to promote reparations for African people affected by the slave trade’s atrocities.

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) reports that approximately 13 million Africans were kidnapped and trafficked across the Atlantic to the Americas, including British, French, and Spanish colonies, between 1501 and 1867. Tragically, about two million individuals are believed to have perished during the horrific Middle Passage.

“Kidnapping, trafficking, abusing, and dehumanising African people and their descendants was as lucrative for Europeans and white Americans as it was traumatising for black people.

“The trans-Atlantic slave trade enriched many white people across occupations and industries—from early European colonists to priests and popes, shipbuilders to rum and textile producers, bankers to insurers—and generated the capital used to build some of America’s greatest cities and most successful companies,” says the EJI.

Despite the enduring benefits that many European and American families, businesses, and institutions derive from the immense wealth generated by enslavement, African communities still bear the burdens of inequality, injustice, poverty, and diminished self-worth.

President Akufo-Addo expressed support for the concept of an international body to streamline the processes involved in securing reparations for the atrocities of the slave trade, stating, “We welcome this idea and will collaborate to make it a reality.”

“I think the people in Addis Ababa, the AU, will be very happy to hear this initiative, especially because of the decisions that have been taken in this last year or two along the same lines.

“It is extremely important for us, for all of us, for our self-confidence and self-worth that this matter is dealt with, if possible, in our lifetimes.

“The people were taken from here and dumped across on the other side of the ocean. So, we have a direct interest,” he told Dr Rowley.

President Akufo-Addo has been pushing the AU leadership for some time to seriously explore the issue of reparations.

“If people can be compensated for the Holocaust, Africans can be compensated for slavery,” he told participants at a recent forum in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

He insisted that the atrocities committed during the slave trade should not be repeated and that Africans would never again allow such evil to be perpetuated against them.

Dr. Rowley praised Ghana’s government for playing a key role in generating public support for reparations to Africans.

“We the descendants of the enslaved would want to be emancipated from that inhumanity, and we have been fighting it with Africa.

“And, we think the time has come for an international body to put this conversation, this narrative to the Western world so that some sort of rectifications could come our way,” the Prime Minister appealed.

President Akufo-Addo has reiterated his government’s commitment to fostering the growth of Ghana’s aviation sector, aiming to enhance its standing and competitiveness in the West Africa Region and beyond.

He highlighted significant developments in infrastructure and service expansion, along with the implementation of the open skies policy, in the aviation sector over the last few years.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo affirmed his administration’s dedication to nurturing the growth of the nation’s aviation sector.

“My government will continue to pay the needed attention to enable the sector to compete fairly with neighbouring countries in the West African region and beyond. It is therefore important that all stakeholders come on board and play the respective roles toward making Ghana an aviation hub in the region,” he said.

He stated that Ghana has experienced significant growth in passenger traffic on both domestic and international routes.

Furthermore, he emphasized that international passenger traffic reached approximately two million people by the end of 2023, representing a 25% increase from the 2019 figure.

PDS case: Mahama fumes over closed $190m compact; blames Akufo-Addo,Bawumia

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his disappointment at the closure of Ghana’s Millennium Challenge Compact by the United States, lamenting the efforts made during his administration to secure the Compact.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagbearer described the closure as disheartening, emphasising the significant groundwork laid for its realisation.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) confirmed the closure, stating that there are currently no plans to resume collaboration with Ghana. The Compact has been entirely shut down.

Ghana was set to receive critical funding of approximately $190 million in March 2019 to support infrastructure investments and the financial recovery of the energy sector.

However, the disbursement of funds was halted due to complications arising from a failed concession agreement involving Ghana’s Power Distribution Services (PDS).

The agreement is intended for PDS to manage the assets and staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The U.S. government suspended the transfer of funds, citing concerns about private sector involvement in the MCC’s Ghana Power Compact.

In response, Mahama criticised the Akufo-Addo government on Facebook, attributing the collapse of the deal to alleged corruption within the current administration.

He pledged that a future administration under his leadership would prioritise accountability and conduct a thorough investigation into the PDS scandal to hold those responsible accountable.

Additionally, Mahama vowed to implement measures to enhance private sector efficiency in the electricity distribution system, focusing on areas such as metering, revenue management, and fault response.

“It’s disheartening to learn that the $190 million we negotiated for private sector participation in electricity distribution under the US Millennium Compact has been lost due to Nana Addo and Bawumia’s corrupt, ‘yenkyendi’, and cronyistic governance practices.”

“This is unacceptable, and we deserve better as a people.”

“As I gear up to assume the presidency in January 2025, thanks to your votes and endorsement in this year’s election, I want to assure you that I will work diligently to enhance private sector efficiency in the electricity distribution system, including metering, revenue management, and fault response,” he posted.

Bawumia is running away from your legacy, no one will continue it – Nana Yaa Jantuah tells Akufo-Addo

Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has criticized President Akufo-Addo over his assertion that re-electing former President John Mahama would destroy his legacy.

Nana Yaa argues that President Akufo-Addo’s legacy is not one that anyone, including his Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would want to continue.

“How can Mahama come and destroy your legacy? Nobody will come and continue it, even Bawumia says he has his own vision so he is even running away from the legacy.

“He is saying he will come and remove all the obnoxious and nuisance taxes, so who would want this legacy? Even the man you want to take over doesn’t acknowledge the legacy. He said he is the mate and not the driver, so who will take it?” she questioned while speaking on Accra-based TV3.

During a rally in Doboro, Greater Accra, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians not to vote for the NDC’s flagbearer in the upcoming December elections, expressing concern that electing Mr. Mahama would undermine the progress made during his tenure.

However, Nana Yaa Jantuah insists that the President’s legacy is nothing to boast about. In response, Mr. Mahama stated that he would not continue a legacy of “corruption, bad governance, arrogance, ineptitude, and a bankrupt economy.”

PDS scandal: Akufo-Addo should be blamed for $190m compact loss – Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed his dismay at the squandering of $190 million designated for private sector involvement in electricity distribution under the US Millennium Compact.

Taking to Facebook, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer criticized the “corrupt, ‘yenkyendi’, and cronyistic governance practices” he attributed to President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the loss of the $190 million US Millennium Compact.

The former president pledged that he “will work diligently to enhance private sector efficiency in the electricity distribution system, including metering, revenue management, and fault response,” when he is reelected as president in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Mahama vowed to prioritize enhancing private sector efficiency in electricity distribution, focusing on metering, revenue management, and fault response, should he regain the presidency in the upcoming December 7 general elections. He also pledged a thorough investigation into the PDS scandal to ensure accountability.

The Power Distribution Services (PDS) Ghana Limited takeover, a contentious deal where the Ghanaian government awarded a 25-year concession to manage the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), was suspended in July 2019 amidst fraud allegations.

In March 2019, Ghana was poised to receive crucial funding of $190 million for long-term infrastructure sustainability and financial recovery in the energy sector as part of the second tranche of the MCC power compact.

However, due to the terminated concession agreement with PDS, the US government halted the fund transfer, emphasizing the importance of private sector involvement under MCC’s Ghana Power Compact.

    Below is the full statement.

    Dear fellow Ghanaians,

It’s disheartening to learn that the $190 million we negotiated for private sector participation in electricity distribution under the US Millennium Compact has been lost due to Nana Addo and Bawumia’s corrupt, ‘yenkyendi’, and cronyistic governance practices.

This is unacceptable, and we deserve better as a people.

As I gear up to assume the presidency in January 2025, thanks to your votes and endorsement in this year’s election, I want to assure you that I will work diligently to enhance private sector efficiency in the electricity distribution system, including metering, revenue management, and fault response.

My administration will prioritise accountability and ensure a thorough investigation of the PDS scandal to hold those involved accountable.

We can work together to build a brighter future for Ghana’s power sector that benefits citizens and businesses.

Let’s stand together, fight against corruption and cronyism, and work towards building the Ghana we want.

Trained scammers, like driver like mate – NDC’s Yayra Koku to Bawumia, Akufo Addo

National Democratic Congress (NDC) activist and supporter Yayra Koku has accused President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Bawumia of being “trained scammers.”

Yayra made these allegations in a tweet on May 8, 2024, accompanied by pictures of the president dining with voters using the same plates and earthenware bowls. Another image shows the president drinking sachet water with groundnuts.

According to Yayra, these actions were “acts of humility” orchestrated by the president to deceive Ghanaians into voting for him in 2016 when he was desperate for power.

“”When Akufo-Addo wanted power from Ghanaians, he did this. Drinking pure water with groundnut, eating ampesie with ordinary voters etc. Upon receiving the power, he is instructing the Chiefs to rise and acknowledge him. He does not respect anyone” he fumed.

On his part,Dr. Bawumia, who is the flagbearer of the NPP, is adopting the same ploy into tricking Ghanaians to vote for him citing a video of Dr. Bawumia greeting nobles at a function, where he shook their hands and bowed as a sign of respect.

“I am not surprised that his mate BawuLiar is doing the same to trick Ghanaians. I saw a video of him almost on the ground, greeting chiefs. Like Driver, Mate. These people are trained SCAMMERS” he added.

FLASHBACK: Akufo-Addo stoned while campaigning at Klottey Korle

In 2016, during a New Patriotic Party (NPP) rally in Osu, an unidentified individual in the crowd threw a stone at opposition leader Akufo-Addo while he addressed supporters.

Akufo-Addo, who was on the second leg of his tour in the Greater Accra Region, had visited Alajo in the Ayawaso Central constituency before proceeding to Osu Klottey Korle on October 5, 2016.

As Akufo-Addo spoke about the need to remove President Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to alleged economic mismanagement, he was interrupted by a stone thrown by an unknown individual.

Although momentarily disrupted, he continued his speech, stressing the importance of supporting the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant for the area, Philip Addison.

Addressing the incident, Akufo-Addo expressed disappointment but urged supporters to remain focused on the party’s objectives.

“Someone just threw a stone at me, why?” he asked. But he quickly resumed his delivery, saying: “No problem, this is our politics in Ghana.

“I would wish that when we are moving [to the Flagstaff House], you allow Philip Addison to come along with me. Our party, the party of the Elephant, we know of only one candidate for Klottey Korle. He is Philip Addison. We know of no other person. We go to primaries to elect someone before he can contest [on our ticket]. So please make no mistake – NPP is the only party capable of removing the NDC from power. No other political organisation in Ghana can do it.”

He emphasized that the NPP, represented by Addison, was the sole viable option for replacing the NDC in power.

No arrests were made in connection with the incident, and the motive remains unclear.

  • Patrick was voted national best MCE, why did you sack him? – Weija-Gbawe MP asks Akufo-Addo

Patrick was voted national best MCE, why did you sack him? – Weija-Gbawe MP asks Akufo-Addo

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency, Tina Naa Ayele Mensah, has raised questions about President Akufo-Addo’s decision to dismiss Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.

Kumor passed away shortly after his removal.

In an interview with Accra-based Onua TV, the MP suggested a connection between Kumor’s passing and his removal as MCE in February 2024. Mensah expressed surprise at Kumor’s dismissal, noting that he was widely recognized as the best MCE nationwide.

She further implied that Kumor’s removal was related to her unsuccessful re-election bid as a New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the 2024 polls.

In an interview laced with high emotions and tears at a point, the MP is heard saying: “He was a very strong guy, but he is gone. He thought he was working hard and dedicated himself to performing, he did not know that Tina Naa Ayele Mensah would lose an election and he would be dismissed.

“He did not know he’d be dismissed after I lost an election,” she stressed before lamenting why he was dismissed at all when he had been adjudged one of the best administrators at the national and regional levels.

“Patrick was voted national best MCE, regional best MCE, so why was he dismissed? I was among the few Greater Accra MPs who appreciated the party’s votes but I was dismissed as was Patrick. He could not stand it and died with sorrow. He is gone, he is gone,” she said shedding tears.

According to reports, Tina Mensah made these comments during a recent condolence visit to the Kumor family.

Tina Mensah was dismissed from her position as deputy health minister after losing the NPP primaries last year.

Kumor was among the 25 MCEs whose appointments were revoked by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He was succeeded in the role by Mr. Michael Danquah.

Hiding KPMG report will not make us forget “stinky” SML scandal – Manasseh tells Akufo-Addo

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has directly confronted President Akufo-Addo regarding the Presidency’s decision to withhold the complete KPMG audit report on the revenue mobilisation agreement between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).

Awuni firmly asserted that any efforts to conceal what he termed a “stinky” deal would prove futile. The decision not to disclose the full KPMG audit report has sparked concerns about transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

Citing specific provisions within the RTI Act, the Presidency has declined to release the report, citing concerns over confidentiality and the sensitive nature of the data involved.

In a letter addressed to the MFWA and signed by the Chief Director to the Chief of Staff, H. M. Wood, the Presidency expressed regret over its inability to fulfill the request for the full KPMG audit report.

In response to the Presidential decision, Manasseh Azure Awuni expressed skepticism regarding the confidentiality claims surrounding the KPMG report. He pledged to hold all individuals implicated in the agreement accountable for their actions, underscoring that transparency and accountability are fundamental pillars of democratic governance.

“The SML deal stinks. If they think hiding the KPMG report will make us forget the SML scandal, they should think again. The SML scandal will not die. And those behind in the past and in the future will face justice, no matter how long it takes.”

He also referenced former President John Dramani Mahama’s release of the full GYEEDA report during his tenure, emphasizing the significance of transparency in addressing matters of public interest.

“Even when we did not have the Right to Information Law, President John Mahama released a white paper and released the full GYEEDA Report as well. The Akufo-Addo-led opposition NPP was the loudest in asking President Mahama to release that report, which was also a subject of my investigation in 2013.”

“What is Akufo-Addo hiding from us?” he asked.

KPMG, an auditing firm, has completed and submitted its report on the contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML) to President Akufo-Addo.

The President tasked KPMG with auditing the contract on January 2, 2024, setting an initial deadline of January 16, 2024, which was later extended to February 23, 2024.

According to the audit findings, SML received a total of GH¢1,061,054,778.00 from 2018 to date, while only partially fulfilling its obligations. However, the report also acknowledged that SML’s efforts had contributed to increased revenue in the downstream petroleum sector.

Despite the audit report’s claims, SML has disputed receiving GH¢1,061,054,778.00 for its contract with the GRA. They argue that KPMG’s figure was cited “without reference to the investments made and the taxes paid” during the review period.

In response to the report, Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), stated that the foundation had submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request to the presidency for the full KPMG Audit Report.

SML-GRA deal: What are you hiding from Ghanaians? – Manasseh Azure asks Akufo-Addo over rejection of request for KMPG report release

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has raised concerns regarding President Akufo-Addo‘s formal rejection of a request to disclose a complete audit report recently submitted to him.

Through a letter dated May 7, 2024, the presidency declined a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), seeking access to the comprehensive KPMG audit report concerning the revenue mobilization agreement between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd (SML).

Manasseh, part of the MFWA team that reported on the “SML scandal,” criticized Akufo-Addo’s refusal to release the complete report, referencing a similar action taken by Akufo-Addo’s predecessor, John Dramani Mahama.

In a post on X dated May 8, 2024, Manasseh wrote: “Even when we did not have the Right to Information Law, President John Mahama released a white paper and released the full GYEEDA Report as well. The Akufo-Addo-led opposition NPP was the loudest in asking president Mahama to release that report which was also a subject of my investigation in 2013..”

He added: “What is Akufo-Addo hiding from us? The SML deal stinks. If they think hiding the KPMG report will make us forget the SML scandal, they should think again. The SML scandal will not die.

“And those behind in it in the past and in the future will face justice, no matter how long it takes,” the post concluded.

Reasons for Akufo-Addo’s rejection of the full KPMG report:

In a letter addressed to the MFWA and signed by the Chief Director to the Chief of Staff, H. M. Wood, the Presidency expressed regrets over its inability to fulfill the media outfit’s request.

“Upon careful consideration and in accordance with section 5 (1) (a) and (b) (i) of the RTI Act, I regret to inform you that your request has been refused. Section 5 (1) (a) and (b) (i) states that information prepared for or submitted to the President or Vice President containing opinions, advice, deliberations, recommendations, minutes, or consultations, is exempt from disclosure and that disclosure of such information would compromise the integrity of the deliberative process by revealing the thought process, considerations, and influence on decision-making reserved for the highest offices of the land.

“The full KPMG Audit Report comprises opinions, advice, deliberations, and recommendations that are integral to the President’s deliberative process and, therefore, qualifies as exempt information under section 5 (1) (a) and (b) (i),” the letter read in part.

The Presidency emphasized that the findings and recommendations of the KPMG report had been disclosed in a detailed press statement.

Efforts to rebrand Mahama will still not make him president – Akufo-Addo’s lawyer tells NDC

Lawyer to President Akufo-Addo, Kow Essuman, has reiterated that regardless of any rebranding efforts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, will never emerge as a superior choice for the presidency of Ghana.

has emphasized that regardless of any rebranding efforts by the National Democratic (NDC) concerning John Dramani Mahama, he remains an inferior option for the presidency.

He asserts that Mahama embodies a past era that was decisively rejected by voters in both 2016 and 2020, making him unsuitable for leadership as Ghana looks to forge ahead into the future.

According to Essuman, Vice President Bawumia represents youth and innovation, making him the preferred candidate for the country’s burgeoning young population.

His post shared via X read: “When the future calls, you answer. This year’s election isn’t just a choice; it’s a decision between the past (Mahama) and the future (Bawumia).

“Ghanaians have already experienced the past, and their overwhelming rejection in 2016 and again in 2020 speaks volumes. No amount of rebranding can turn that past into a better choice than a future of hope and prosperity.

“That’s why Bawumia is the candidate of the youth and the candidate of innovation. So, register to vote now and on 7 December 2024, cast your ballot for the future. Let’s leave the past behind, one last time! #Bawumia2024 #ItIsPossible,“ the post concluded.

The Head of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has responded to President Akufo-Addo‘s assertion that electing John Mahama would erase his legacy as President.

Tameklo challenged the President’s claim, stating that the only legacy Mahama would destroy is the alleged corruption and misuse of state resources under Akufo-Addo’s administration.

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians not to vote for the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) flagbearer in the upcoming December elections. He expressed concerns that electing the former president would endanger the progress made during his tenure.

Speaking at a mini rally in Doboro, Greater Accra, after visiting Blue Skies Limited, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his endorsement of Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as the ideal presidential candidate.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 8, Tameklo referenced the 1992 Constitution, which mandates any President to continue with governmental programmes and projects started by the previous administration, except those detrimental to the state’s growth.

He argued that Mahama, if elected, would not continue Akufo-Addo’s legacies of nepotism and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

Tameklo concluded by emphasizing that former President Mahama prioritizes the state’s progress over personal interests, suggesting a departure from what he perceives as Akufo-Addo’s self-serving agenda.

“The only legacies of Akufo Addo that John Mahama is not permitted by the Constitution to continue to include, but are not limited to these. John Mahama will destroy the Akufo Addo legacy of corruption,” he posted on Facebook.

Ghanaians will vote against the NPP and bring NDC in come December 7 – Nii Lantey Vanderpuye

Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodioo, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has predicted Ghanaians will choose former President John Mahama in the upcoming December elections to erase what he terms the ‘horrifying’ legacy of President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, May 7, cautioned Ghanaians against voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer in the upcoming December elections, fearing it might jeopardize the strides made during his tenure and threaten the nation’s trajectory.

Addressing supporters at a mini rally in Doboro, Greater Accra, after a visit to Blue Skies Limited, President Akufo-Addo endorsed Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as the ideal presidential candidate.

However, in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, MP Vanderpuye contended that Ghanaians are ready for change, suggesting President Akufo-Addo should apologize to disappointed citizens for leading the country into significant hardships.

Mr Vanderpuye further asserted that President Akufo-Addo’s tenure would be marked as the worst in the nation’s history, citing alleged corruption and economic decline.

“If I were Nana Addo, the best thing I would do as a person is to apologise to the millions of Ghanaians who voted for me and whom I have hugely disappointed. Nana Addo will go into history as the worst president ever in the fourth republic of this country.

“He is the most corrupt president in our history. He is the one who has collapsed our economy. Ghana’s economy today is worse than at any time in our history. Is that the legacy he is talking about? Of course, John Mahama will come and correct all.

“The youth of this country are looking for somebody who will come and change that legacy that he has left of joblessness, youth unemployment, hopelessness…So Ghanaians will vote for a change so that somebody will come to erase this horrifying and very disgraceful legacy from our history,” he stated.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s management of national affairs, suggesting that an apology to Ghanaians might be warranted due to perceived failure in addressing the populace’s needs, resulting in widespread hardship.

Mr Vanderpuye’s comments were prompted by President Akufo-Addo’s call for Ghanaians to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer in the upcoming December elections, arguing that such a move would jeopardize the progress achieved under his administration and endanger the nation’s future.

However, speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Vanderpuye expressed his belief that President Akufo-Addo’s tenure would be remembered as one of disappointment, possibly making him the worst president in the country’s history.

“…If I were Nana Addo, the best thing I would do as a person is to apologise to the millions of Ghanaians who voted for me and whom I have hugely disappointed. Nana Addo will go into history as the worst president ever in the fourth republic of this country. Worst President ever because he is the most corrupt president in our history.”

“He is the one who has collapsed our economy. Ghana’s economy today is worse than at any time in our history. Is that the legacy he is talking about? Of course, John Mahama will come and correct all,” he stated.

  • NPP will collapse if I start exposing its leaders – Hopeson Adorye

A suspended member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, has asserted that he could dismantle the party alone if its communicators persist in tarnishing his reputation.

In an interview with NEAT FM’s afternoon show Mr Adorye expressed deep dismay over the circumstances surrounding his suspension, maintaining that the NPP has shown ingratitude towards him.

Despite harboring bitterness, Adorye refrains from speaking out, yet he laments being subjected to insults and baseless accusations by NPP communicators.

He issues a cautionary note, warning the NPP to tread carefully, as his potential exposé of the party’s leadership could spell trouble for them.

“I have so much bitterness in me, but I decided not to talk, yet these people [NPP communicators] are going around insulting me and accusing me wrongly”.

“My job was given to Nana Asante Bediatu’s wife; they planned to remove me from the office”.

Mr. Adorye said, “I am not a fool to be treated that way in a party I have served.”

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to oppose the candidacy of the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December elections.

He believes that electing the former President would reverse the progress made during his administration and put the nation’s development at risk.

Speaking to supporters at a mini rally in Doboro in the Greater Accra region after visiting the premises of Blue Skies Limited, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his support for Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as the preferred presidential candidate.

“This is our election year and the limited registration has started. Anybody who hasn’t registered and is eligible should go and register. This is because your right to vote is your power.

“Also, when the time is up for the voting, our job is simple. The person I defeated and my work since I took over, seems not to please him, I cannot hand over power to such a person. He will destroy whatever we have done when he comes.”

Farouk Mahama commends Akufo-Addo gov’t for achieving 88% electricity coverage

Chairman of the Government Assurances Committee, Farouk Aliu Mahama, has highlighted the commendable current electricity coverage of 88.75% but emphasized the need for more efforts to ensure a reliable and consistent power supply nationwide.

In a Facebook post on Monday, May 6, the Member of Parliament for Yendi praised the Energy Minister for his appearance before the committee on Friday, May 3, where they discussed the electricity situation.

Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh dismissed claims that Ghana is in a “dumsor” era. He noted that the current power outages are due to maintenance issues, describing them as ” dum seisie”.

He applauded the government’s efforts to address the recent power crisis, acknowledging the strategies implemented to mitigate the challenges.

Mr. Mahama however emphasized the importance of ongoing engagement and proactive measures to maintain a stable electricity supply that meets the needs of all citizens.

“In accordance with Standing Order 225, the Hon. Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, appeared before the Committee on Assurance to update the Ghanaian people on the energy situation in the country and to report on the progress of commitments made to Parliament.”

“As the Chair of the Committee, I commended the Minister and the government for their remarkable performance in the energy sector. However, I also emphasized the need for a more concerted effort to address the recent technical challenges affecting electricity supply in some parts of the country.”

  • CDD slams govt over Cecilia Dapaah’s case

CDD slams govt over Cecilia Dapaah’s case

Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has condemned the government’s handling of the money laundering case involving former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

CDD-Ghana voiced apprehension regarding the government’s response to scandals implicating its associates.

In a letter addressed to the Economic and Organised Crime (EOCO), the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General advised against further pursuing money laundering investigations into Madam Cecilia Dapaah’s activities.

In a statement released on Friday, May 3, 2024, CDD-Ghana noted, “The abrupt and inconclusive manner in which this matter has been ended fits a pattern in terms of the Nana Akufo Addo Administration’s general attitude and response to scandals, allegations or reported incidents of criminal conduct, corruption or other financial malfeasance involving persons closely associated with the Government or ruling party.”

CDD-Ghana believes that the advice signals the end of the case. The AG has assured that the case will continue.

“The upshot of the A-G’s advice is that the Cecilia Dapaah matter is over. Case closed. Once again, a high-profile case of suspected or alleged criminal conduct implicating a politically influential person has been terminated abruptly without proper credible resolution or closure. It is not clear in what way the forced termination of further investigation into this matter by the A-G serves either the public interest or helps the reputation of the target of the investigation.”

CDD-Ghana also questioned EOCO’s failure to conduct its investigations.

“The action of EOCO in requesting directions from the A-G without first acting on the referral from the OSP to initiate its own investigation of the matter seems oddly contrived. Having been provided with a docket containing various exhibits, statements by twenty or so individuals, as well as the bare fact of the quantum of the monies found in the properties associated with Mrs. Dapaah and her spouse, one would have expected EOCO to proceed with its own investigations, instead of seeking the A-G’s legal advice on prosecution at that early pre-investigative stage.”

This suggestion followed the Special Prosecutor’s office’s determination that the discovery of over 1 million dollars in Dapaah’s residence exceeded its jurisdiction, prompting the recommendation for money laundering investigations.

  • Akufo-Addo cuts sod for building of MIIF Technical Training and Jewelry Centre at UMaT

Akufo-Addo cuts sod for building of MIIF Technical Training and Jewelry Centre at UMaT

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has inaugurated the commencement of the construction phase for a top-tier Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Technical Training and Jewellery Centre at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa.

This training hub, financed by MIIF, stems from a collaborative pact inked with the University of Mines and Technology at the MIIF offices on August 16, 2023.

The partnership outlines four primary initiatives: the erection of an elite Technical Training Centre, which will house a state-of-the-art Gold Jewellery Making and Training Centre; a decade-long undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship initiative for women hailing from mining communities; and an annual speaker series, serving as a platform for scholarly discourse melding academia with industry expertise.

Scheduled for completion within eight months, the facility will encompass a 500-seat auditorium, lecture halls, a resourceful library, and administrative spaces to bolster hands-on programmes in metalsmithing, jewel technology, and the certification of jewellery to meet global standards.

Additionally, the centre will delve into the integration of artificial intelligence and innovative systems in mineral value augmentation.

Addressing attendees at the sod-turning ceremony, President Akuffo Addo emphasised that the establishment of the Technical Training Centre underscores the government’s unwavering dedication to fostering a resilient and sustainable mining sector.

“This centre will serve as a hub for excellence in mining-related education, research, and innovation, equipping our youth with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in this critical sector,” he said.

The President highlighted that with the establishment of this centre, it is anticipated that a fresh wave of jewellers will receive comprehensive training, equipped with the skills needed to excel in their craft.

Additionally, they will be educated on entrepreneurship and equipped with the necessary abilities to transform Ghana into a leading jewellery hub for the African continent.

Expressing confidence, the President affirmed that this technical training centre will not only enrich the students and staff of UMaT but will also significantly propel the mining industry forward.

“It will provide cutting-edge training and research facilities, enabling the country to stay at the forefront of technological innovations and best practices in mining and mineral processing,” he added.

The MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem and the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, commended MIIF for the partnership with UMaT, which is going to elevate the university to greater heights, adding that the human resource contribution of the university to the mining industry cannot be underestimated.

He said, “The African mining industry can boast of seasoned professionals who are manning the affairs of both operational and policy handles, who were trained by the university.”

He believes that the establishment of the center will elevate UMaT to a global centre of excellence for training top-tier professionals in the downstream aspects of mining and related industries.

He emphasised, “It will also supply the essential human resources needed to keep pace with the rapid advancements in Ghana’s mining sector and the anticipated expansion.”

Expressing gratitude to MIIF for their sponsorship of the training centre, Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah noted that once completed and operational, the technical training centre will play a vital role in training the nation’s youth and equipping them with the necessary technical skills for the mining sector.

“Akufo-Addo is just a dirty boy” – NDC man reacts to president dropping peels on the floor

A tweet by X (formerly Twitter) user @AnnanPerry showcases a diplomatic engagement between Akufo-Addo and President William Ruto of Kenya in Accra, Ghana.

During the meeting, Akufo-Addo hosted President Ruto, where they engaged in discussions and signed seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at bolstering bilateral relations between their countries.

In response to this, another X user, whose bio suggests they are a youth activist and potentially an NDC supporter, criticised the president, referring to him as a “dirty boy” for littering around.

Akufo-Addo’s economic mess will take 50 years to restore under an 8-hour shift – Sammy Gyamfi

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has lambasted the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led administration for the current economic challenges facing the country.

Gyamfi argued that the policies implemented by the current government have caused significant harm to Ghana’s economy, to the extent that remedying the situation would demand an extraordinary effort.

“The state at which President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia destroyed our economy, if we are working an 8-hour shift, it will take 50 years to restore the economy back,” he said on Accra-based UTV on May 3, 2024.

He highlighted that the nation’s debt burden has surged to unprecedented levels during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

He voiced serious apprehensions about Ghana’s capacity to obtain additional loans given its precarious financial state.

“Now, because of our debt, places that all countries borrow from have been told that we can’t get loans anymore because we cannot pay our debt,” he added.

Non-existent Keta Port set to get administration block funded by Akufo-Addo – Ablakwa reveals

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Okudzeto Ablakwa, has brought to light a concerning development regarding the supposed Keta Port project.

Ablakwa shared on his Twitter account that a significant amount of funding allocated by the Ghanaian government is directed towards constructing an administration block for the non-existent port.

Ablakwa raised questions about the motives behind this allocation, especially considering President Akufo-Addo‘s previous statements implying the existence of the Keta Port.

He criticised the appointment of a director for a port that does not physically exist, noting that this director has been receiving salaries, allowances, and other benefits for over five years.

In a statement on Twitter, Ablakwa highlighted, “After President Akufo-Addo infamously appointed a Director of the non-existent Keta Port in March 2019, latest intercepted documents reveal that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration after 5 years is now allocating funds for the construction of an Administration Block (not the actual port).

Meanwhile, the Director of the imaginary Keta Port, Alexander Yaw Adusei Jnr., has been enjoying full salaries, allowances, official vehicles, and other mouthwatering perks of office at taxpayer expense for more than 5 years when already employed experienced staff of GPHA could have overseen the establishment of the Keta Port.”

This revelation by Ablakwa has sparked concerns about the allocation of resources and the management of infrastructure projects in Ghana.

Sell National Cathedral site to complete abandoned hospital projects – IMANI Africa to Akufo-Addo

The president of the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged President Akufo-Addo to divest the contentious National Cathedral site.

Mr Cudjoe has proposed that the proceeds from this sale, valued at approximately US$58 million, be allocated to completing vital hospital projects across the nation.

His recommendation arises amidst mounting concerns over the sluggish pace of the Agenda 111 initiative, a flagship program initiated by President Akufo-Addo in August 2021.

Cudjoe stresses the importance of prioritizing the finalization of crucial healthcare infrastructure projects over other ventures.

He critiques the government’s strategy of spreading resources thinly across all 111 hospitals, likening it to the unfinished National Cathedral project.

“The Health Minister should do the commissioning. Nana should focus on properly completing 15 out of the 111 District hospitals before his tenure ends. He requires $1.5 billion to complete 70% of Agenda 111. Pray for him, as finding that money in this tight economy will be difficult without a stroke of luck or a lottery win.

“Which is why whatever he has now should be used to properly complete 15 to 20 of these hospitals instead of allocating it thinly across all 111 and leaving them resembling the ungodly and unsightly Cathedral site. Also, can he allow auctioneers to sell his man-made wonder, the Cathedral site, to art collectors? We could get money to help complete at least one district hospital.

“P.S. My friend Kofi Tonto reminds me that the Health Minister is a designated nominee of the president, pending approval by Parliament, so he can’t commission the project.

“Well, I still think the designated nominee remains the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, doesn’t he? If not, then a deputy health minister should do the commissioning,” he said in a Facebook post.

  • Akufo-Addo is very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone – UCC Lecturer

Akufo-Addo is very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone – UCC Lecturer

A Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, has characterized President Akufo-Addo as a politically divisive figure based on his actions and statements.

Dr. Asante Otchere’s remarks followed statements made by the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim, expressing the party’s commitment to reconcile with Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Ejisu Member of Parliament and runner-up in Tuesday’s Ejisu by-election.

Mr Ntim emphasized Mr Aduomi’s significance to the NPP and his determination to reintegrate him into the party.

Mr Aduomi, who served three terms as an NPP MP for Ejisu, chose to run as an independent candidate in the by-election due to concerns about the party’s handling of the delegates’ album for constituency executive elections, which he believed compromised fairness and integrity.

Several NPP members, including President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, accused Aduomi of betrayal and speculated that he had defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Asante Otchere, in an interview with Bonohene Baffuor Awuah on the Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM, criticized both President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia for lacking the spirit of reconciliation, essential in politics.

He highlighted the difficulty Aduomi may face in reconciling with the NPP, particularly due to the accusatory statements made by the President and Vice President.

“If you listen to the kind of things the President and the Vice President said about Aduomi, it will be difficult for the former MP to reconcile with the NPP. The Vice President accused him of being an NDC member. That was very bad, just because he had some disagreements with the NPP and decided to contest against the party.

“Post-election, if you listen to what the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, has said, it is wonderful, quite reconciliatory. But if you listen to the President and Vice President, these are two individuals who are very divisive. The President is also very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone who does anything against him. That is how he is. So, the decision is for Kwabena Owusu Aduomi to make. If he feels that the environment will allow him to project himself in terms of his political career, why not? If not, and since politics is about timing, if you get your timing right, you’ll get your result right.”

Dr. Asante Otchere described them as divisive and noted the President’s reputation for being vindictive, suggesting that he does not easily forgive those who oppose him.

He commended the reconciliatory tone struck by the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, contrasting it with the divisive rhetoric from the President and Vice President. Dr. Asante Otchere emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with Aduomi, advising him to consider whether the political environment allows for his career advancement and stressing the importance of timing in politics.
