Prior to the election, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah predicted the Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to win 14 out of the 16 regions.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, January 28, he noted that Dr. Bawumia would sweep massive votes in the party’s stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

He added, “Yes, [Bawumia will win in 14 regions out of 16 regions].“All the areas we have looked at are pointing in one direction, and that direction is that Bawumia will win this Saturday’s election one-touch.

According to him, “Based on our model, his lowest score will be 54 percent, which is the 57 percent we are giving him minus the three percent margin of error, or he could get up to 60 percent”.The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics emphasised that the data is consistent across all regions. “I am very confident in Bawumia’s numbers because they are more stable in terms of variability. There is no noise in the data,” he added.

Last year, the National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics disclosed that 56 per cent of voters and 72 per cent of committed NPP delegates want former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

According to the poll, 28 per cent of voters are rooting for former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, with 6 per cent each for Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum, and 4 per cent supporting Kwabena Agyapong.

Among NPP delegates, 19 per cent want Kennedy Agyapong, while Dr Bryan Acheampong records 4 per cent, Dr Osei-Adutwum 3 per cent, and Kwabena Agyapong 1 per cent.

The poll was conducted between December 1 and December 21 across all 16 regions of the country. Methods used include a combination of web-based, telephone, and face-to-face interviews.

In October 2025, the Pan-African civil society organisation Sanity Africa, which predicted the victory of Bernard Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the tightly contested Akwatia by-election, released its Phase Two survey on the NPP presidential primaries.

According to the organisation’s survey, there has been a shift in the landscape as the party gears up towards the January 2026 primaries.

The abridged October report suggests that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, popularly known as Ken, has strengthened his lead among NPP delegates, commanding 53.1% of voting intentions, representing a 1.7 percentage-point increase from the Phase One survey conducted in July.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB) trails with 39.0%, indicating a 3.2-point drop. Behind them are Dr Bryan Acheampong at 5.0% (up 1.9 points), Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum at 2.0% (down 1.0 point), and Ing. Kwabena A. Agyepong at 0.9% (rising from 0.3%).

The survey, carried out between July and October 2025, sampled 15,000 delegates from an estimated 218,000 in the expanded voter album across all 276 constituencies.

It boasts a 99% confidence level with a ±5% margin of error. At the regional level, Ken Agyapong sits atop as the leading candidate in 10 out of Ghana’s 16 regions, including strongholds such as Ashanti (54.8%), Central (69.0%), and Eastern (54.8%).

His biggest contender, Dr Bawumia, on the other hand, still holds his lead in the northern sector, with an advantage in the remaining six regions. He leads in the North East (70.0%) and Upper West (60.2%). Competitive races are unfolding in Bono East, Savannah, and Upper East, where margins remain slim.

Notable shifts include Dr Bawumia widening his lead in the North East Region from 51.6% to 70.0%, while Ken strengthened his position in Volta (50.8%) and Bono (53.0%).

Dr Bryan Acheampong registered significant gains in his home region of Eastern, rising to 21.7%. Sanity Africa noted that these shifts reflect evolving delegate sentiments influenced by campaign strategies and regional dynamics.

The organisation emphasised that while Ken Agyapong currently has the upper hand, the contest remains fluid. Endorsements, messaging, and campaign strategies, it said, are expected to play critical roles in shaping the outcome.

With Phase Three of the survey scheduled for release in January 2026, Sanity Africa concluded that Ken may be the one to beat, but the race is far from over.

However, the Global InfoAnalytics tracking poll named Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the people’s preferred candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election, ahead of his closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The poll suggests that 57% of voters prefer Dr Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate, while 29% picked Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

2026 flagbearer race: Ken Agyapong concedes defeat

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Assin Central constituency, Kennedy Agyapong has conceded in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential election.

Speaking to delegates, Kennedy Agyapong noted “I know most of you are dejected. You have to keep your spirit up, because once we have life, we have everything. So don’t be dejected”.

Kennedy Agyapong is amongst the candidates who contested in the NPP’s internal elections conducted today, Saturday, January 31.

The election was conducted to select a candidate to represent the party in the 2028 general elections.

More than 300 polling centres nationwide were set up for the presidential primaries with over 211,000 delegates participating in the expected to vote.

Speaking to the media,  Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dr Stephen Amoah has expressed shock over the development. According to Stephen Amoah, he expected Mr Agyapong to earn a comfortable victory, due to the investments made by his campaign team.

“It’s very surprising because I thought Kennedy was going to win by 60%,” Dr Amoah said.

The lawmaker said the strong presence and intensive campaign activities of the Ken Campaign in the area had created expectations of a different result, adding that the outcome fell short of what many people on the ground had predicted.

He added that his call is not personal against the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. “I don’t have anything against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a person, no! What I am saying is that, if you want the party to be rebuilt, get new executives, young people, dynamic, passionate about this party. Get rid of him (Bawumia). Get rid of these executive members who are part of his campaign team, more or less,” Professor Frimpong-Boateng urged.

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has come to terms with the fact the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is facing internal currently.

However, he is optimistic that things will change for the better.

“We are facing some challenges as a party, and admittedly, these are not easy times. However, I strongly believe that God will help us overcome these challenges,” he told party members on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme,

He pointed out that the NPP is not unique in this, as every political party encounters similar challenges.

“I want to remind all our party foot soldiers and leaders that we are not the only party going through these difficulties. I urge all party faithful to exercise patience as we work through these challenges together,” he appealed.

Speaking on the matter of differing interests within the party, Afenyo-Markin admitted that members might have regional, religious, or tribal affiliations but emphasized that the NPP’s unity and common goal should take precedence.

“I know people have various interests—whether regional, religious, or tribal—but as long as you are an NPP member, your interest should be in the NPP and the NPP alone,” he asserted.

Ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, Afenyo-Markin urged members to unite after the elections and support the candidate who wins.

“After the 31st of January, we must support whoever emerges as the winner of the primaries. Whether it is Dr Bawumia, Honourable Kennedy Agyapong, Honourable Adutwum, Honourable Bryan Acheampong, or Kwabena Agyapong, we must come together as one party,” he urged.

He also cautioned members to be mindful of their words and actions during this period, warning that internal rivalries should not undermine party unity.

“I know some people still harbour bitterness, but I urge all NPP members to remember that unity is key,” Afenyo-Markin concluded.

Meanwhile, former Attorney-General and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop the internal fights and come together to rebuild the party.

His call came at a time when the NPP is facing internal confusion after losing the recent general elections. Tensions have been rising between some key members, especially the ongoing public exchanges between Bono Regional Chairman Abronye DC and Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.

Joe Ghartey said this is not the time for members to be blaming each other. “There is no point in pointing fingers against each other,” he said, adding that “when you point a finger at one person, the other four point at you,” referring to a popular Ghanaian proverb.

He stressed that no one person—no matter how popular—can lead the NPP to victory in the next election without the full support of a united party. He called for calm, reflection, and smart planning, rather than arguments and blame.

While many have blamed the party’s leadership, Joe Ghartey believes the problems run deeper. He said the challenges facing the NPP are not just at the top but also include poor coordination and communication across various levels of the party.

Sharing his own experience, he said that during his time as a Cabinet Minister, he sometimes struggled to reach heads of some government institutions. He chose not to mention names, saying that would not help the party now.

On the feud between Abronye DC and Kennedy Agyapong, Ghartey urged both men and their followers to put aside their differences. He said the NPP needs peace and cooperation if it wants to regain the trust of Ghanaians.

“This is not the time for personal battles. This is the time for rebuilding,” he said.

The head of Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo, has urged former President John Agyekum Kufuor to actively engage in mediating for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it works to strengthen its support base before the 2024 elections.

Boafo emphasized the importance of Kufuor’s involvement to help re-engage members who have become distant or hesitant to back the party’s efforts to maintain power.

He described Kufuor as a pivotal figure in the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

“Now we are left with few people to come and join the campaign team because Bawumia is involving everybody. For today, I will say this: Kufuor has to put his feet on the ground. It has been ringing in my head for a long time.

“He has to start calling certain people. That is how I see it, for him to talk to them in secrecy because no matter what we do in this Fourth Republic, Kufuor was the shine for everybody.

“He gave Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the position to become Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and the experience he had is the one that is helping him in his presidency,” he said in an interview on Wontumi TV.

He encouraged Kufuor to hold private discussions with key individuals.

“Look at the lawhouse that he has built; I am not sure we can see a similar one in any of the African countries. And from the Attorney General, he made him Foreign Minister. So, Nana Akufo-Addo is also a Kufuor breed. He also promoted Bawumia until he became the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana for Akufo-Addo to see him and make him his running mate.

“So, look, the Fourth Republic, everything surrounds Kufuor. So, based on what is going on, he has to wake up because the few people left, want to come,” he added.

  • NPP Primaries: Ken Agyapong picks No.1, Bawumia takes third position on ballot

NPP Primaries: Ken Agyapong picks No.1, Bawumia takes third position on ballot

Flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has picked the first spot on the party’s just concluded ballot.

The exercise conducted today, Friday, October 10, was to determine who takes which number on the ballot paper ahead of the presidential election on January 31, 2026.

So far, Kwabena Agyepong, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, have been cleared to campaign.

Dr Bryan Acheampong picked the second position, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took the third position. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26.

Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Wednesday, August 27. Former Food and Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong has also filed his nomination forms.

In the meantime, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received strong backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who paid him a visit in June to pledge their support.

Former Energy Minister and running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has decided to throw his weight behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in 2026.

In an interview on Asempa FM on August 26, the former minister noted that he remains grateful to the former Vice President who decided to make him his running mate despite the many individuals who advised him to do otherwise.

According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr Bawumia was engaged countless times by some bigwigs in the party to pick someone else to be his running mate.“I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and upon all the people who were praying for the running mate slot, he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.”

“I know it was a difficult situation, but a lot of people don’t know. Some bigwigs in the party went to Dr Bawumia to tell him not to make me the running mate but he ignored them. There are some names that if I mentioned, you would be shocked. Some even took him to offices to advise him against me but still he chose me,” he remarked.

He thus said; “So, I cannot be ungrateful to him… For those who stood in the flagbearership contest, everyone knows Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but I am still for Bawumia.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made room for new additions to its already approximately 220,000 delegates who are eligible to vote in its presidential primaries slated for Saturday, January 31, next year.

In a statement dated August 26, signed and shared by the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, Williams Yamoah, the party announced that registration has been opened for an additional 60,000 new delegates, which include nineteen new categories of people.

This directive follows reforms adopted at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19.
The statement explained: “In accordance with Article 13(1)(11) of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and pursuant to the motion on transitional provisions adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the following new categories of Party officials and dignitaries have been included in the upcoming Presidential Primary voter register.”

The updated voter register, also known as the party album, will now include several new categories of officials and dignitaries. These are all former regional and constituency executives, members of the National Council of Elders, 30 members of the National Council of Patrons, all past national officers, former party-card-bearing MPs and parliamentary candidates, as well as former party-card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers.

Other groups added to the list are external branch executives, former external branch executives, and key members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), including presidents of recognised institutions, the National TESCON Coordinator, regional coordinators, and one TESCON patron from each institution.

Additionally, 10 members from each Regional Council of Elders, 10 patrons from each region, and five members and patrons from each constituency have also been included.

The statement directed that “all officers that fall under the categories above are requested to register their names with their respective organisational structures, including the National Secretariat, Regions, Constituencies and External Branches, as applicable, with immediate effect.”

To make the registration process easier, the statement clarified that a digital link would be circulated to External Branch Executives for online registration. All other qualified members were advised to liaise with their respective regions and constituencies to register.

However, the forms are to be accessed via the party’s official website.“The registration form may be downloaded from the Party’s official website. For ease of reference, a sample copy is hereby attached,” excerpts of the statement read.

The statement further warned that the registration was strictly for the aforementioned categories of people, with a deadline set for Friday, September 19.

“The deadline for registration is Friday, September 19, 2025. Please be advised that this registration exercise is exclusively open to officers and members who meet the aforementioned criteria. The Presidential Elections Committee shall undertake a comprehensive verification and validation of the Party’s album to ensure that only an authentic and credible register is used for the conduct of the presidential election,” the party cautioned, while expressing confidence in members’ cooperation.

“We count on your usual cooperation and adherence to this directive in furtherance of the Party’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.”

The NPP is on a journey of reset, reinforcement, and healing following its historic defeat in the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election, with John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing 6,328,397 valid votes, representing 56.55%, against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Since the beginning of this year, the party has undertaken several reforms to position itself strongly against its main opponent, the NDC, and to recapture power.

Among these reforms is the abolition of the electoral college in favour of a broader base of delegates. The party has also added 19 new delegate categories and granted amnesty to suspended members. The party’s suspended members have been reinstated, and all charges against those facing the disciplinary committee have been dropped.

the National Council decided during an emergency meeting held on July 25. In a statement dated August 16 and signed by the Acting National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, members were informed that, as part of measures to ensure unity and cooperation, all banned members had been given the right to return.

“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead. I write to inform you that the National Council, at its Emergency Meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved, in the interest of unity and reconciliation, to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate disciplinary bodies,” parts of the statement read.

The party further urged all relevant bodies, including Regional and Constituency Executive Committees, to reinstate suspended members in accordance with laid-down rules and guiding principles.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and nullifies any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” the statement added.

However, the party clarified that this recall does not apply to members who willfully forfeited their membership. In cases where such individuals wish to return, they are required to submit a formal reinstatement request to the party’s secretariat. Upon acceptance, a two-year ban will be imposed, preventing them from contesting in any internal elections.

NPP to vet Bawumia and 4 other presidential aspirants today

The vetting committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Tuesday, September 23, assess the former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and four other persons contesting to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

Today’s session forms part of the party’s process to elect the party’s presidential candidate in 2026. Several prominent party figures have already publicly signaled their intent to contest, including Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe), Bryan Acheampong (Member of Parliament for Abetifi), former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

  • Bawumia, Adutwum pick up nomination forms for NPP flagbearer race

Bawumia, Adutwum pick up nomination forms for NPP flagbearer race

Former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has joined the several individuals vying for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidacy slated for January 2026. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum picked up the party’s nomination forms on Thursday, August 14.

While addressing the media on Thursday, Dr. Adutwum expressed confidence that party members will elect him as their presidential candidate for the general elections scheduled for 2028.

If elected, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who served under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Education Minister, plans to make Ghana a better place for all. “We are on track, and by the grace of God, my party, I believe, will vote for me and make me the flagbearer of the NPP. And after that, I will be on the journey to the promised land — the land that our nation has been yearning for years, that our nation will become a prosperous one. Our nation will wage war against poverty and win. That the poverty and deprivation will be over.”

“That is what the campaign of 2028 will be about — a country that hadn’t been independent for many years. We’ve done our very best. From the first president to the current president, each one of them has done something great. Yet, we have a lot to do. And that is what Adutwum’s presidency will be about,” he added.

In a related development, over 400 youth organisers of the party on Wednesday, August 13, picked up flagbearer nomination forms on behalf of the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. On August 5, Kennedy Agyapong (former Member of Parliament for Assin Central) officially picked up nomination forms to contest the party’s primary elections.

Several prominent party figures have already publicly signalled their intent to contest, including Bryan Acheampong (Member of Parliament for Abetifi), former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, and Senior Lecturer at Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Edmund Oppong-Peprah.

The NPP, on Tuesday, July 29, opened nominations for its 2028 flagbearer position. Aspirants will pay a whopping amount of GHC100,000 for nomination forms and GHC500,000 as a filing fee.

Nomination forms may be obtained from the Office of the General Secretary at the Party Headquarters, Asylum Down, from now until August 28. An aspiring presidential candidate shall be required to pay a development fee as determined by the National Council.

This comes after the opposition party officially released its presidential primaries timetable on Friday, July 25, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The statement informed interested candidates to pick up their forms by Tuesday.

It also noted that by August 28, all forms should have been submitted, as the party is expected to move into the vetting mode by September, approximately a month after they close the flagbearer nomination.

“Nominations will be opened on July 29, 2025, for all persons interested in contesting for the flagbearer to pick their forms. Vetting will be conducted from September 15 to 22, and the election to choose our flagbearer will be held on January 31, 2026.”

The National Executive Committee has urged both candidates and supporters to uphold the tenets of the party to maintain peace and harmony. “All aspirants and their supporters are reminded to uphold the values of the party and refrain from divisive conduct during the campaign period.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former vice president and the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 election, is widely considered the frontrunner, followed by the former Assin North Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, a former contender for the flagbearer primaries.

The earlier-than-usual opening of nominations for the flagbearer position, according to the party, forms part of their restructuring and strategic measures taken to ensure transparency and discipline in the selection process, as well as to give ample time to the flagbearer to engage members, stakeholders, and other members of the international community to set the required tone for the 2028 elections.

The nominations’ opening comes about six months ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026. Ahead of the 2016 general elections, the NPP opened nominations in March 2014 and held flagbearer elections on October 18, 2014, marking 25 months ahead of the elections.

However, in 2025, they have declared nomination openings in July and a primary set for January 2026, which is about 35 months ahead of the presidential elections. According to the party’s constitution, it is required that at least six months’ notice be given ahead of the primaries.

The NPP’s presidential race is expected to be an intense one this time around. Kennedy Agyapong’s position as the strongest contender for Dr. Bawumia has been complemented by a recent survey conducted by Sanity Africa, a Pan-African civil society organisation, between April and June 2025, which showed Kennedy Agyapong leading with 51.4% delegate support, ahead of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who had 42.2%.

Ahead of the flagbearership race, Ken Agyapong has received prophecies about his victory. Ahead of the last presidential primaries two years ago, the four candidates — Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh — who vied for the flagbearer position, signed an agreement stating that, following the primaries, “candidates will accept election primary results, promote peace and cohesion.”

In the NPP’s previous presidential primaries in November 2023, Dr. Bawumia secured 61.47% of the total votes from nearly 200,000 NPP delegates, emerging as the victor, while Ken Agyapong secured about 37.41%. Dr. Bawumia held a meeting with his closest contender at his residence in Accra.

After being announced as the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Kennedy Agyapong threw his support behind Dr. Bawumia. “So, party members, we should put everything behind us, and let’s unite this party… I believe we can break the eight, and that’s what I’ve been preaching,” Kennedy Agyapong said.

Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election. John Dramani Mahama, who ran on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), bagged 6,328,397 valid votes, representing 56.55%, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Meanwhile, ahead of the pending flagbearership race, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who visited him in June to pledge their support.

“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028,” the MMDCEs said in their statement after the engagement.

“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as constituency and regional executives — some for over 16 years — we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” they added.

Also, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on June 19, received 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who announced their endorsement of his bid for the party’s flagbearership position. The delegation ended up having an in-camera meeting with the 2024 flagbearer.

The delegation included former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam; Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah; Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku; Techiman South legislator, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah; Habib Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tolon; Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour; and Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.

We have suffered a great loss as a country – Bawumia on helicopter crash

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reacted to the  Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter that crashed on Wednesday, August 7, at Adansi Akrofrom in the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Bawumia described the tragic incident as painful while speaking at a solemn flower-laying ceremony in memory of the victims on Friday, August 8.

He called for unity while emphasizing that the opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will give its best in all activities.

On Wednesday, August 7, the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the unfortunate demise of 8 individuals who have passed away following a tragic helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofrom in the Ashanti Region.

The samples of the remains of the deceased involved in the tragic incident have been transported to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid in their identification.

Per reports, the autopsy and identification procedures were to have been carried out by the 37 Military Hospital; however, the conditions of the bodies have called for advanced forensic processes.

The deceased are Minister for Defence, Dr Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who is the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed—Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture; Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; Samuel Aboagye, former Parliamentary candidate; Squadron leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Mensah.

Meanwhile, the burial of Muslim victims has been suspended until further notice, according to the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, on Thursday, August 7.

Burial for Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, was expected to be conducted on Thursday, August 7, as per Islamic tradition.

However, speaking to the media, the Deputy Minister explained that the recent development was due to the condition of the victims’ remains, adding that the government and families of the deceased are awaiting autopsy results and investigative clearance. According to him, a new date will be fixed after a conclusion has been made.

“The information earlier was that, because of Islamic tradition, the Muslims among them were to be buried today. I am sure those decisions were taken before the actual state of the remains was determined.

“When that was done, it was clear to all that it was going to be practically impossible to carry out any burial today. So, those who had to be communicated to were quickly informed last night, and arrangements were suspended until further notice, or until some examinations are done before new dates are communicated,” Suhuyini added.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) earlier reported that its airforce helicopter Z9, which took off this morning at 0912 hrs from Accra and headed for Obuasi, was off the radar.

Hours later, the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the unfortunate demise of the 8 individuals comprising three crew and five passengers. The news came as a shock to many, and several individuals could not hold back their tears. Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak broke down in tears as the Chief of Staff announced the death of the individuals at the Jubilee House.

Edward Bawa, former Member of Parliament for Bongo and current CEO and Managing Director of GOIL PLC who was at the residence of the late Murtala Mohammed, could not hold back his tears while engaging a journalist.

Also, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine broke down in tears at Hon. Murtala’s residence while engaging the media.

Meanwhile, the government has noted that details regarding the State Funeral and any additional arrangements will be communicated through official government channels.

As Ghana sets aside three days to mourn, it has called on members of the public to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss the country has experienced.

“We urge all citizens to observe the period of national mourning with dignity and respect,” the Office of the Presidency noted.

As the nation mourns the eight gallant citizens, books of condolence will be opened simultaneously at the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters, the National Democratic Congress headquarters, and the head office of NADMO, from Sunday, 10th August to Thursday, 14th August 2025.

The President has assured the bereaved families and the nation that the Ghana Armed Forces has initiated a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of this crash.

He made this known after acknowledging that “as we mourn, questions about the cause of this tragedy are natural and important.”

An Investigative Board of Inquiry has been set up to investigate the cause of the crash, the president revealed. He further informed Ghanaians that “the flight data and cockpitvoice recorders have been retrieved.”

As the relevant authorities probe the circumstances of the death of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of NADMO; Squadron Leader Peter Anala of the Ghana Air Force; Flying Officer Tsum Ampadu of the Ghana Air Force; Sergeant Ernest Addo of the Ghana Air Force, the president has called on all and sundry to stand united in this difficult times.

“This is not a time for division, speculation, or political point-scoring. It is a time for strength, for empathy, and for the enduring Ghanaian spirit that still stands tall when all else fails. Let our words be of comfort, our actions be of kindness, and our unity be the tribute we offer to those whose lives have been lost.

To the families, to the Ghana Armed Forces, to the Ministries and Departments that have lost dedicated staff, and to the National Democratic Congress, which mourns the passing of valued members, may you find strength in their memory and their legacy. May we all be comforted by the knowledge that, though they are gone from our sight, they remain forever in the spirit of the nation they so faithfully served,” the president remarked.

According to President John Dramani Mahama, this tragedy represents a deep personal loss for him, as he shared close bonds with many of these individuals who died.

“Our nation is grieving. On behalf of the government and the people of Ghana, I extend my deepest condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones. Know that our entire country mourns with you. We share your pain. Your loss is our loss—a loss of dedicated public servants, intellectuals, and individuals who relentlessly worked for a better Ghana,” he added.

Meanwhile, the samples of the remains of the deceased involved in the tragic Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on August 6 have been transported to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid in their identification.

Per reports, the autopsy and identification procedures were to have been carried out by the 37 Military Hospital; however, the conditions of the bodies have called for advanced forensic processes.

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations (MoCDTI), in the spirit of solidarity, has entreated members of the general public to desist from circulating videos of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter crash, including photos of the charred remains of the deceased.

As the nation mourns, words of consolation have been shared by the international community. Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said the loss was not just Ghana’s but Africa’s. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan called the ministers “committed public servants” whose legacy should inspire future generations.

The African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina described the tragedy as “devastating.” The United Nations in Ghana, through Resident Coordinator Zia Choudhury, mourned the loss as a “national wound” and pledged continued support for Ghana during its mourning period. Kenyan President William Ruto extended condolences and assured Ghana of Kenya’s prayers and solidarity.

Former Vice President also followed suit with a solemn message. He also prayed for strength and healing for the entire country in this difficult time.

“A while ago, I communicated to the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, my deepest condolences following the heart-wrenching news of the loss of two of our nation’s Ministers and six others in a helicopter crash earlier today.

The fallen men paid the ultimate price in the service of our motherland leaving a shocked nation in pain. I know most of the deceased personally and equally feel a sense of loss to see their demise under such horrid circumstances.

Samira, I, the Bawumia family, and the NPP join the nation in mourning them. May the good Lord grant the bereaved families, the Government and people of Ghana strength and healing in this time of tragedy,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

The Minority in Parliament while expressing their condolences charged all Ghanaians to honour the eight souls by “supporting our Armed Forces, protecting Ghana’s environment, and working together for our nation’s security and prosperity.”

“Let us channel our grief into renewed determination to build the Ghana they envisioned where public service is viewed as a sacred trust and every citizen can contribute to our national progress.
May their souls rest in perfect peace, and may their memories remain everlasting beacons of light, guiding us towards a more united and prosperous Ghana,” the Minority added in a press statement.

Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has also expressed her condolences to the country and bereaved families.

President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has also sympathised with the West African country.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah stated: “It is with profound sorrow that I learned of the military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, 6th August, 2025, in the southern Ashanti Region of Ghana. The tragic incident claimed the lives of eight people, among them two Cabinet ministers: Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, as well as three Ghana Armed Forces crew members and other senior officials.”

President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the victims.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has directed that all flags are to fly at half-mast until further notice. Engaging the general public yesterday, Julius Debrah revealed the identities of the deceased individuals after the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) earlier reported that its airforce helicopter Z9, which took off this morning at 0912 hrs from Accra and headed for Obuasi, was off the radar.

The President and government have extended their condolences and sympathies to the family of the comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country.

  • NPP delegates endorse proposal to replace party executives in public office, reject lowering youth age limit to 35

NPP delegates endorse proposal to replace party executives in public office, reject lowering youth age limit to 35

Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have endorsed a motion that seeks to require party executives who accept public appointments to step down from party roles.

This motion, the tenth among 56 others, seeks to amend articles 7(10) & 9(7) of the constitution of the party.

During the National Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium on July 19, the  motion to limit the age range for a youth in the party to 35 instead of 40 was rejected. Also, the motion to take election supervision rights from constituency officers to regional leaders, thus allowing them to appoint neutral supervisors instead, got declined.

The proposals presented by the National Council of Elders focus on several proposed amendments to the party’s constitution aimed at addressing the root causes of its 2024 electoral defeat.

The NPP’s defeat in the December 2024 polls saw its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lose to former president John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC secured 56.55% of the popular vote and a commanding 184 out of 276 parliamentary seats, marking the NPP’s most significant loss in the Fourth Republic and ending their two terms in office.

This heavy defeat has prompted widespread calls for introspection and fundamental reforms within the party as it looks towards the 2028 elections.

Below is the full list of motions:

    • MOTION ONE

    Article 1

Amend article 1 of the Constitution to include the Party’s Motto, Symbol and Colours.

[The absence of the Party’s Motto, Symbol and Colours in the Constitution is an obvious omission and ought to be rectified. The Party’s Motto, Symbol and Colours must find expression in the Party’s Constitution.]

    • MOTION TWO

    Article 3(7)

Amend article 3(7)of the Constitution to give the power to recommend suspension of a Member or an office holder pending disciplinary action against him to the appropriate Disciplinary Committee rather than the Executive Committee.

[The amendment is necessary to ensure justified suspension of party executives (elected and appointed) by Executive Committees, only upon recommendation by the Disciplinary Committee,  pending disciplinary proceedings against such Officers. It is the Disciplinary Committee that shall recommend suspension, having regard to its preliminary findings.]

    • MOTION THREE

    Article 4(3)(7)

Amend article 4(3)(7) of the Constitution to allow for a complaint against any Constituency or Regional Officer, whether elected or appointed, to be filed at;  (i) in the case of the Constituency Officer, the Regional Executive Committee and (ii) in the case of the Regional Officer, the National Executive Committee.

[The amendment seeks to achieve fair and equal treatment or handling of disciplinary matters involving ‘elected officers’ and ‘appointed officers’ who are at the same level of the Party by providing that they should be dealt with by the same Disciplinary Committee.]

    • MOTION FOUR

    Article 5(6)

Amend article 5(6) of the Constitution to adopt the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s demarcation/cluster of Electoral Areas.

[The EC’s Electoral Area systems are pre-determined, bereft of controversies and involve more polling stations than the party’s demarcations of Electoral Area. The current provision in the Party’s constitution is that where polling stations under an Electoral Area exceed ten(10), an additional Electoral Area may be created. This lack of certainty and exactitude has triggered misunderstandings in the creation of some Electoral Areas. The adoption of the EC’s Electoral Area system cures any such misunderstanding or perceived mischief.]

    • MOTION FIVE

    Article 6 –  new provision

Amend article 6 of the Constitution to provide for an Electoral Area Executive Committee structure made up of five (5) members who shall all be elected, comprising the Electoral Area Chairperson, Secretary, Organiser, Communications Officer and Electoral Affairs Officer.

[The current system requires limited expansion to allow for increased participation and support in the management of the electoral areas. A 5-member Committee enhances operational capacity and ensures a more inclusive and structured approach to supervising polling station activities.]

    • MOTION SIX

    Article 6(1)

Amend article 6(1) of the Constitution to increase the Polling Station Executives from five (5) to seven (7), who are all to be elected, comprising the Chairperson, Secretary, Organiser, Women’s Organiser, Youth Organiser, Communications Officer and Electoral Affairs Officer.

[The Committee recommends a one-man one-vote (OMOV) system as a long-term electoral framework for the Party. In the absence of the foundational structures for the OMOV electoral system, the proposed limited expansion (representing 40% rise) at the polling station level is more realistic and manageable. It has the effect of increasing the electoral college considerably while the Party works on the recommended OMOV system.]

    • MOTION SEVEN

    Articles 6(1); 7(2); 9(1); 10(7)(3)

Amend article 6(1), 7(2), 9(1) & 10(7)(3) of the Constitution to split/decouple the position of Research and Electoral Affairs Officer at the Constituency, Regional and National levels of the Party.

[The amendment brings the needed focus and attention to each of the two responsibilities. Also, it is not every researcher who understands electoral matters and vice versa. Therefore, separating the positions and appointing people with the requisite expertise to occupy the respective positions will inure to the Party’s benefit.]

    • MOTION EIGHT

    Article 7(2)

Amend article 7(2) of the Constitution to include the Constituency Research Officer, Electoral Affairs Officer and PWD Coordinator on the Constituency Executive Committee.

[This represents a limited expansion of the Constituency Executive Committee and seeks to promote inclusivity and broader participation in Party activities at the Constituency level.]

    • MOTION NINE

    Articles 7(5); 9(2); 10(7)(3)

Amend articles 7(5), 9(2) & 10(7)(3) of the Constitution to make Communication Officers at all levels of the Party elected from the Polling Station, Electoral Area, Constituency, Regional and at the National level. At the National level, the Communication Officer shall be the Director of Communications.

[The appointment of Communication Officers has, in many instances, been fraught with a lot of challenges occasioned by perceptions of favouritism and lack of candour. Making the positions elective will afford the Party delegates to select persons they think can best communicate for the Party. For the avoidance of doubt, the Deputy Directors of Communications shall remain appointed.]

    • MOTION TEN

    Articles 7(10); 9(7)

Amend articles 7(10) & 9(7) of the Constitution to prevent Party Officers who get appointed into government from continuing to hold their offices.

[Party officers who are appointed into government should not be allowed to hold dual positions. So long as they have accepted the appointment to serve in government, they should focus on their mandate in government and give opportunity for other competent Party members to occupy their positions in the Party. It is also in line with the provisions in clause 10 of article 7 & clause 7 of article 9, which are intended to ensure that government appointees do not hold Constituency, Regional and National Executive offices.]

    • MOTION ELEVEN

    Articles  7(26); 9(24)

Amend articles 7(26) & 9(24) of the Constitution to provide that any vacancy that may occur for whatever reason in the case of the Constituency Secretary and Regional Secretary shall automatically be filled by the Deputy Constituency and Deputy Regional Secretary, respectively.

[The Deputy Constituency and Deputy Regional Secretaries, just like the substantive Constituency and Regional Secretaries, are also elected by the same delegates at the same Conference. The Deputy Secretaries should be able to occupy the positions of the substantive Secretaries in the absence of the latter.]

    • MOTION TWELVE

    Article 7(27)

Amend article 7(27) of the Constitution to give voting rights to National and Regional Officers at the Constituency Delegates Conference at the Constituency they hail from.

[This amendment strengthens the connections between these Officers and the respective Constituencies they hail from, where they may also serve as Patrons and source of logistical support.  This amendment is also geared towards the proposed limited expansion of the electoral college pending the OMOV system.]

    • MOTION THIRTEEN

    Articles 7(27); 9(25); 10(2)

Amend articles 7(27), 9(25) & 10(2) of the Constitution to provide that the Party shall hold Constituency/Regional/ National Delegates Conferences every two years (i.e. biennially) instead of annually.

[This amendment looks at holding timely but necessary Conferences across all levels of the Party. There shall also be sufficient time to hold other equally important Conferences within the period before the biennial conference. Where it becomes necessary, an Extraordinary Delegates Conference may be called.]

    • MOTION FOURTEEN

    Article 7(27)(b)

Amend article 7(27)(b) of the Constitution to give voting rights to the Electoral Area Executives at the Constituency Biennial Delegates Conference.

[Currently, Electoral Area Coordinators and all Polling Station Executives have voting rights at the Constituency Delegates Conference. The proposed Electoral Area Executives (made up of the Electoral Area Coordinator to be now called Electoral Area Chairperson and four (4) other executives) should have voting rights at the Constituency Delegates Conference.]

    • MOTION FIFTEEN

    Articles 7(29); 9(27)

Amend articles 7(29) & 9(27) of the Constitution to allow Constituency and Regional Secretaries to present reports on the state of the Party at the Constituency and Regional Delegates Conference, with the prior approval of the Constituency and Regional  Executive Committee as the case may be.

[Constituency and Regional Secretaries are the administrative heads of the Constituency and Regional Secretariats of the Party and it is appropriate that they present a report on the state of the party to the Constituency and Regional Party, respectively to the Delegates  Conference with prior approval of the Constituency and Regional Executive Committee, as the case may be.]

    • MOTION SIXTEEN

    Articles 7(29); 9(27)

Amend articles 7(29) & 9(27) of the Constitution to require the statement of account to be presented by the Constituency and Regional Treasurers at the Constituency and Regional Delegates Conference to have received prior approval of the Constituency and Regional Executive Committee as the case may be.

[This allows the Constituency and Regional Executive Committee to scrutinise and give a stamp of approval to the statements before they are presented at the Delegates Conference.]

    • MOTION SEVENTEEN

    Article 7(30)

Amend article 7(30) of the Constitution to provide that the Regional Executive Committee shall appoint persons, other than Polling Station, Electoral Area and Constituency Officers,  to supervise Polling Station and Electoral Area elections.

[Constituencies are directly involved in the compilation of the album for organising Polling Station and Constituency elections. It is therefore prudent that supervision of these elections should be taken to the Regional level to absolve it from any conflict of interest.]

    • MOTION EIGHTEEN

    Article 8; Article 8(5)

Amend article 8 of the Constitution to specifically provide that the External Branches shall have three (3) representatives on the National Executive Committee and five(5) representatives on the National Council.

[The Party Constitution under article 8(5) grants the External Branches representation at the National Executive Committee and the National Council, but does not indicate the number of representatives they should appoint to serve on these bodies. This amendment brings clarity to the number of representatives the External Branches shall have on the National Executive Committee and National Council.]

    • MOTION NINETEEN

    Articles 8; 13(11)

Amend articles 8 & 13(11) of the Constitution to specifically provide that all former and current executives of the External Branches shall have voting rights at the Presidential Primaries.

[The amendment seeks to expand the electoral college for the Presidential Primaries to promote inclusivity and broader participation. This is in line with the proposed limited expansion.]

    • MOTION TWENTY

    Articles 8; 10(2)(f)

Amend articles 8 & 10(2)(f) of the Constitution to specifically provide that ALL current executives of the External Branches shall have voting rights at the National Delegates Conference.

[Previously, only twelve (12) Executives of the External Branches were allowed to vote at the National Delegates Conference. This amendment, allowing all of them to vote,  promotes inclusivity and broader participation. The amendment is also in line with the proposed limited expansion.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-ONE

    Article 9

Amend article 9 of the Constitution to include Regional Electoral Affairs Officer, Regional Research Officer (note: the decoupling of the two), Regional Legal Officer, Regional PWD Coordinator, and a Special Duties Officer as part of the Regional Executive Committee.

[This represents a limited expansion of the Regional Executive Committee.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-TWO

    Article 9(1)

Amend article 9(1) of the Constitution to expand the composition of the Regional Executive Committee members to include Constituency Secretaries.

[Constituency Secretaries are responsible for all administrative matters at the Constituency level and it is only proper that they are part of the Regional Executive Committees.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-THREE

    Article 9(1) new provision

Amend the Constitution by inserting a new provision to create a Regional Steering Committee composed of the Regional Officers, the Chairman of the Regional Council of Elders and the Regional Parliamentary Caucus Chair.

[The proposed amendment aligns with what pertains at the national level, where we have a National Steering Committee, which is the body in charge of the day-to-day administration of the Party at the National level. The Regional Steering Committee shall also be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Party in the Regions. The Regional Steering Committee system shall facilitate decision-making at the Regional level.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-FOUR

    Articles 9; 10(2); 13

Amend articles 9, 10(2) & 13 of the Constitution to grant voting rights to the Regional & National TESCON Coordinators and the TESCON President from each recognised tertiary institution in the country at the Regional and National Delegates Conference, respectively.

[The Regional TESCON Coordinators are in charge of coordinating all the activities of TESCON in the various tertiary institutions within the Region. It is only proper to grant them voting rights at Conferences, just like the Executives whose activities they coordinate. The same principle applies to the National TESCON Coordinators. The specificity on the TESCON President and not just any representative of TESCON avoids the usual challenge with validation of the representative from TESCON.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-FIVE

    Articles 9(25); 10(2); article 13(11)

Amend article 10(2) & 13(11) of the Constitution to grant voting rights to the TESCON President (and NOT a representative from TESCON) from each recognised tertiary institution in the country at the Regional and National Delegates Conference.

[The specificity on the TESCON President and not just any representative of TESCON avoids the usual challenge with validation of the representative from TESCON.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-SIX

    • MOTION TWENTY-SEVEN

    Article 10; new provision

Amend article 10 of the Constitution by inserting a new provision to modify the composition of the Sector Committees under the National Executive Committee to include both Members of Parliament and non-Members of Parliament as well as their functions.

[This allows the Party to marshal its available best brains to serve on the various Sector Committees whether or not they are Members of Parliament.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-EIGHT

Amend articles 10(2)(3)(e) & 13 of the Constitution to make all Members of the National Council of Elders delegates at the National Delegates Conference and the Presidential Primaries.

[Considering the indispensable roles played by the National Council of Elders, they deserve more representation at the party’s highest decision-making body. In any case, per Article 16, the membership of the National Council of Elders shall not exceed 30, out of which, 15 are already members/delegates to the National Annual Delegates Conference.]

    • MOTION TWENTY-NINE

    Article 10(3)

Amend article 10(3) of the Constitution to increase the representation of the National Council of Elders on the National Council from one(1) to five (5) members, including the Chairman of the National Council of Elders.

[The National Council of Elders is the foremost advisory body of the Party and therefore ought to be adequately represented at the second-highest decision-making body of the Party.]

Chaos at Ablekuma North election rerun disturbing – Bawumia

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reacted to the violence in the ongoing parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

Speaking to the media on Friday, July 11, he described the chaos as disturbing and called for an end.

He noted “This is not the democracy that we want to see in Ghana. Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of the police who have been unable to protect them”.

Meanwhile, a security expert, Dr Ismaeel Norman, has blamed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohono, for the unrest.

He explained that the feud is a result of poor coordination between the police.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is holding an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents with a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections.

However, voting in two polling stations; the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station and St. Peters polling station in the constituency, was suspended following chaos.

At the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency, some individuals engaged in a fisticuff with the police personnel. Also, a JoyNews journalist was slapped by an unknown individual.

Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Ewutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson, has been assaulted by a group of men at the Ablekuma North rerun election.

In a video gone viral, a man lunged at Hawa Koomson, pushing her to the ground. Another person was seen kicking her.

The Police officers present intervened and prevented further attack against Hawa Koomson.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted one of its officers who was caught on camera slapping a journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, during the rerun election at Ablekuma North.

In line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North.

The Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated.

It is unknown what exactly transpired between the reporter and a group of police officers that led to him being slapped.

The Police officer’s action has been condemned by all, including the mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who witnessed the unfortunate incident.

Engaging the media after the assault, Banahene Agyekum expressed distress and pain.

“Yes, (I won’t be able to continue work today) because my right eye is shaking and I don’t know what happened to my forehead. I have to go for a medical checkup,” he stated.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is holding an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections.

After the 2024 polls, Ablekuma North remained the only constituency in Ghana without a sitting MP, due to unresolved disagreements over the outcome of the parliamentary vote.

On December 10, 2024, three days after the national polls, the EC declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC the winner of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh.

However, the EC later revoked the announcement, revealing that results from 62 of the 281 polling stations had not been included in the initial collation.

Efforts to restart the collation in January 2025 were disrupted by multiple challenges.

These included interruptions due to the submission of unverified pink sheets and a violent intrusion at the collation centre that heightened security concerns.

The Electoral Commission (EC), after extensive deliberations, in July noted that it will hold the rerun election because the 19 scanned polling station results used for the collation, though approved by agents of both political parties, were not verified by the presiding officers responsible for those polling stations.

The EC arrived at this decision after it met with the representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, July 1.

Ahead of today’s election, the EC called on the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed security to ensure a safe environment for the conduct of the election.

Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin, storm NIB office over Wontumi’s detention

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin beseiged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Friday over the detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

As part of an ongoing criminal investigation, Chairman Wontumi was recently transferred to the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the aftermath of his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)

This has contributed to tensions among political factions in the country.

Efforts to satisfy EOCO’s bail conditions, which include a GHs50 million bond with two justified sureties, are allegedly being led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The NIB premises have been guarded with tight security as several NPP Members of Parliament, senior party officials, and a large number of supporters have gathered at the NIB premises to express their support.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi, is being investigated for criminal activities.

He has been accused of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

This information was made known by Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai in a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, May 29.

He wrote, “Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering)”.

According to him, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assisting with the probe to recover suspected proceeds from the alleged crime.

“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” he added.

Bawumia tops list of NPP’s prospective 2028 flagbearers – Global InfoAnalytics

A recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics has positioned former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the leading contender for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential ticket.

The survey reveals that 57% of NPP supporters favor him as the party’s next flagbearer, reinforcing his stronghold within the party.

Currently the NPP’s candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia leads the hypothetical 2028 race with 48% of the overall vote. Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong follows with 25%, while Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum secures 13%. The remaining candidates collectively garner 14%.

Among party loyalists, Dr. Bawumia’s lead widens significantly. He commands 57% support, leaving Kennedy Agyapong at 22% and Dr. Adutwum at 11%.

The poll results suggest that Dr. Bawumia’s influence within the NPP extends beyond the 2024 elections. His tenure as Vice President and current role as the party’s flagbearer have reinforced his appeal among party members, positioning him as the frontrunner for the next leadership contest.

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has declared her unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) once again in the 2028 elections, insisting that he deserves another opportunity just as past leaders who eventually won after multiple attempts.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Thursday, March 20, she dismissed concerns about Bawumia’s popularity, arguing that Ghana’s political history proves that many successful leaders did not win on their first attempt.

“We are going to bring Dr. Bawumia back as flagbearer for the NPP. He is the best person to lead the party. We have marketed him before, and we will market him again. Every person deserves a second chance,” she said.

Drawing parallels with previous presidents, Adwoa Safo cited examples of leaders who had to contest multiple times before securing victory.

“Former President Kufuor went how many times before he got the nod? Former President Akufo-Addo contested in 2007 and lost, went again in 2012 and lost. After the 2016 election petition, he finally won. Even Prof Mills contested several times before winning, and President Mahama has also run multiple times. So why are they telling Dr. Bawumia that Ghanaians don’t like him? And now they want to put that in a report and expect us to accept it? No,” she stated.

She also pushed back against attempts to silence Bawumia’s supporters, insisting that every party member has the right to express their opinion.

The money I took from “Baweezy” pained boys – King Paluta

Ghanaian rapper King Paluta has revealed that accepting money from Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did not sit well with some individuals in his circle.

In a recent disclosure, the rapper stated, “The money I took from Baweezy pained boys,” suggesting that some people were displeased with his decision.

King Paluta expressed disappointment that a fan who had previously supported him for Artiste of the Year (AOTY) had suddenly changed stance.

His tweet implied that some Twitter influencers were financially influenced to promote certain artistes over others.

I’ve seen one guy who was supporting me heavily. Even last week… Every time Paluta for AOTY. Yesterday, make I go see aa, he say I no dey deserve the award again. Every Twitter influencer on the payroll already?? Lol Ghana Music, wake up! (in Wendy Shay’s voice), King Paluta wrote in pigin.

However, netizens were quick to call him out, accusing him of engaging in the same practice during the 2024 general elections.

During the 2024 elections, he was seen in the company of then flagbearer Dr Bawumia, where he shared the stage with party executives at some rallies.

While King Paluta has not disclosed the amount he received, his confirmation has sparked debates about musicians and their involvement in political endorsements.

Betting tax was never enforced – Fmr Finance Minister

Former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has noted that the Akufo-Addo administration never enforced the controversial betting tax.

He maintained that while the tax was introduced, it was never implemented under his leadership.

His response comes after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in presenting the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, announced the removal of multiple taxes, including the Betting Tax and E-Levy.

Speaking at a Minority press conference, Dr. Amin Adam criticized the claim, insisting that no revenue was collected from the betting tax during his tenure.

“Betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected Betting Tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented, is to deceive the people of Ghana.”

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) proposed a 10% withholding tax on sports betting and lottery winnings, a policy that drew significant opposition from industry players and the public.

Despite this, Dr. Amin Adam maintains that his government never implemented the tax before leaving office.

In August 2024, during his campaign, then-NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reiterated his promise to eliminate the E-Levy and betting tax if elected in the just-ended general elections.

“We’ll also reduce Withholding Tax for small-scale gold exports to 1% to curb smuggling, and abolish the Betting Tax,” Dr. Bawumia promised during the party’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, 2024.

Bawumia’s concession call interrupted my sleep – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that he was fast asleep when his main opponent, then Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, called to concede defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

Addressing clergy members at a fellowship meeting in Kumasi on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Mahama expressed surprise at how quickly the election outcome was determined, noting that he had not expected the results to be settled just a day after the December 7 polls.

“The night after we voted, by 9 am the next morning, everything was done; all the votes were counted. Who would have imagined? Because I thought we would have had to wait for the Electoral Commission for three days. But by the next morning, I was woken from my sleep that my brother wants to talk to me.

“I asked which brother, and I was told it was my brother, the Vice President, Bawumia. I asked for a minute, went to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth quickly, and came to pick up my phone. When I checked, it was my brother on the phone. He said my ‘big brother, we fought a good fight and when I look at how things are going, you have won, so I am calling to congratulate you, after which I will go out to meet with the press and concede defeat to you,’” he stated.

Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, held on December 7, saw John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerge victorious. According to official results announced by the Electoral Commission on December 9, Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, secured 56.55% of the vote, amounting to 6,328,397 votes. His closest contender, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 41.61%, translating to 4,657,304 votes.

A day after the election, on December 8, Dr. Bawumia conceded defeat in a televised address from his residence. Relying on internal NPP figures that confirmed Mahama’s lead, he announced that he had personally called to congratulate his opponent. Bawumia emphasized that his decision was driven by a commitment to peace and Ghana’s democratic principles.

“The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility,” he stated.

Mahama was officially sworn in as president on January 7, 2025, with Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang making history as Ghana’s first female vice president.

Mass dismissal, attacks on journalists and fmr govt appointees undemocratic – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over what he describes as undemocratic actions by the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In a strongly worded statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, February 20, Dr. Bawumia criticized the mass dismissal of public servants employed during the previous administration, as well as recent attacks on journalists and former government officials.

According to him, the dismissal of individuals who were legally employed under the previous government contradicts the ruling party’s campaign promises, which assured Ghanaians of job creation. He noted that rather than terminating appointments, the government should focus on creating more employment opportunities.

“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He described it as unfortunate that highly qualified individuals are being removed from their positions simply because they are related to or associated with members of the previous government.

Beyond the job dismissals, Dr. Bawumia highlighted increasing attacks on journalists, the use of the military to raid the homes of former government officials, and mob actions against innocent individuals and state institutions. He likened these developments to a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.

“These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward march,” he cautioned.

Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to be a leader for all Ghanaians and to put an end to these actions. He called on the government to reverse the mass dismissals and ensure that democratic principles are upheld.

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution. Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!” he concluded.

Last week, approximately 12 individuals were involved in a raid at the Cantonments residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently outside the country. Five were in military gear, one was in police uniform, and the rest were dressed in civilian attire. The motive behind the operation, which has been condemned by both the Minority and Majority in Parliament, remains unclear. However, the Minority has called for the prosecution of the raiders.

Meanwhile, Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine is expected to respond to a suit filed by the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, over the mass dismissal of public sector employees, which was directed by the Chief of Staff on February 10.

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concerns about what he describes as a worsening security situation in the country, warning that Ghana is veering away from democratic principles.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Bawumia cited recent developments, including attacks on journalists, military interventions in communities, and dismissals of public servants, as evidence of a deteriorating climate.

“There is a general atmosphere of insecurity with attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials and communities, as well as mobs attacking innocent individuals and state institutions,” he stated. “This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition.”

The former vice president, who had earlier pledged his support for the new administration following the 2024 elections, lamented what he saw as politically motivated dismissals of government workers. He criticized the administration’s approach, arguing that job creation should take precedence over mass layoffs.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” Bawumia remarked, alleging that workers were being targeted simply for their affiliations with the previous government.

He further raised alarm over reported plans to terminate contracts of professionals such as nurses, teachers, and security personnel, warning that such actions would be detrimental to national progress.

Calling for urgent intervention, Bawumia urged President John Mahama to uphold democratic values and ensure fairness for all citizens.

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution,” he declared. “Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!”

Africa lacks leadership, innovative ecosystems and not talent – Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, has called for stronger leadership and deliberate investment in innovation to drive Africa’s economic progress.

Speaking at Harvard University on Saturday, February 15, he highlighted the importance of building ecosystems that support technological advancements, arguing that talent is not Africa’s challenge—leadership and infrastructure are.

“Africa does not lack talent. What we lack is deliberateness, leadership, and investment to create the ecosystems where innovations and innovators thrive,” Dr. Bawumia stated while addressing students, faculty, and policy experts at the African Development Conference.

He detailed Ghana’s digital transformation journey, illustrating how the country has strategically leveraged technology to modernise its economy, improve public service delivery, and expand job opportunities.

Central to Ghana’s progress, he explained, is the adoption of the Ghanacard, a biometric national ID system that has provided over 85% of adults with unique identities, thereby streamlining financial inclusion, taxation, and government service access.

Another key development is Ghana’s digital property address system, which has mapped the entire country and resolved a long-standing challenge in service delivery and governance.

“A modern economy simply cannot function without a reliable address system,” he remarked, emphasizing the operational efficiency gained through digital innovations.

Dr. Bawumia also showcased Ghana’s leadership in digital payments, particularly through Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI), which has transformed financial transactions. He highlighted that the initiative has granted over 90% of the adult population access to financial services, making Ghana the only African country to achieve universal financial inclusion.

“Ghana is at the cutting edge of digital payments technology,” he declared, citing the nation’s recognition as the best globally in mobile money regulation.

He explained how these advancements have spurred the growth of e-commerce and empowered small businesses, particularly those operating online.

The former Vice President further discussed Ghana’s digitalisation of the healthcare sector, which has improved medical records and service efficiency. He highlighted the role of drone technology, in collaboration with Zipline, in revolutionising emergency medical supply deliveries to remote areas, ultimately saving lives.

“Ghana now has the largest medical drone delivery service in the world,” he stated, illustrating the impact of technological solutions in tackling healthcare challenges.

In agriculture, he outlined how the introduction of a biometric farmer database has enhanced planning, transparency, and financial access for farmers, strengthening the agricultural value chain.

As he concluded his address, Dr. Bawumia urged African leaders to embrace digital transformation with a mindset of possibilities, arguing that technology is essential for economic survival and development in the 21st century.

“By working together—governments, businesses, educators, and innovators—we can build a future where every African has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a brighter tomorrow,” he said.

  • Africa’s prosperity and job creation depend on digital economy – Bawumia

Africa’s prosperity and job creation depend on digital economy – Bawumia

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has underscored the crucial role of the digital economy in Africa’s development, emphasizing that technological innovation is the key to unlocking prosperity and employment opportunities across the continent.

Speaking at Harvard University on Saturday, February 15, Dr. Bawumia stated that digitalisation is no longer an option but a necessity for Africa’s economic transformation. He stressed that the continent must embrace the digital revolution to avoid being left behind in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as was the case with previous industrial advancements.

“We are in the midst of a global digital revolution,” he asserted. “Artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things are not just buzzwords; they are reshaping our world.”

Dr. Bawumia highlighted Ghana’s digital transformation over the past eight years, citing significant progress in financial inclusion, healthcare, agriculture, and public service delivery. According to him, digitalisation is essential for addressing long-standing structural challenges and enhancing efficiency in governance.

“Our focus is on digital technology that can solve our problems,” he explained. “We are not looking to have driverless cars or humanoid robots at this stage. We want technology that can improve access to credit, enhance public service efficiency, and boost economic opportunities.”

One of Ghana’s major digital achievements, he noted, is financial inclusion through mobile money interoperability.

“When we assumed office in 2017, 70% of Ghanaians had no bank accounts,” he revealed. “However, with mobile money interoperability, we have extended financial services to over 90% of adults, making Ghana the only country in Africa with 100% access to financial inclusion.”

This, he explained, has enabled businesses to grow without relying on physical infrastructure, creating a more inclusive and transparent financial ecosystem.

Beyond financial services, Dr. Bawumia pointed to the transformative impact of digitalisation on governance, agriculture, and healthcare. The introduction of the Citizens App and the integration of government databases, he said, have significantly improved public service efficiency. In agriculture, the digitisation of farms and farmer databases has enhanced productivity and ensured better traceability of produce.

“Ghana is the only cocoa-producing country in the world with a fully digitised cocoa management system,” he noted.

He also highlighted Ghana’s leadership in medical innovation, stating that the country operates the largest medical drone delivery service globally, ensuring access to essential healthcare supplies in remote areas.

Concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia called for greater investment and collaboration among governments, businesses, and educational institutions to build a strong digital economy for Africa.

“The digital economy holds the key to unlocking Africa’s vast potential and creating jobs for the youth,” he said. “By working together, we can build a future where every African has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a brighter tomorrow.”

He urged African leaders to act boldly and strategically in leveraging digital technology to drive economic growth and social development.

  • Democracy is the best governance system we have got – Bawumia

Democracy is the best governance system we have got – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, has reaffirmed that democracy, despite its flaws, remains the most effective form of governance for protecting individual freedoms and promoting accountability.

Speaking in Nigeria on Monday, January 27,Dr. Bawumia lauded democracy as the ultimate system for safeguarding human rights and ensuring citizens play a role in determining their future. Acknowledging its imperfections, he stressed that no other form of governance offers the same level of liberty and accountability.

“It’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best we’ve got,” he stated, underscoring democracy’s ability to balance governance with individual rights.

Quoting Winston S. Churchill, Dr. Bawumia added, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others,” to emphasize the enduring value of democratic governance over authoritarian alternatives.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Dr. Bawumia highlighted findings from the 2023 Open Society Barometer report, which revealed that 92% of Nigerians believe living in a democracy is important. Additionally, 69% prefer democracy to any other form of governance.

“This should leave no doubt that democracy has been embraced by the Nigerian people,” he said, commending the nation’s strong commitment to democratic ideals.

Dr. Bawumia, however, acknowledged that democracy in Nigeria still faces challenges but encouraged the nation to continue strengthening its institutions. He emphasized that the collective desire for democratic governance provides a solid foundation for progress.

“Let us strengthen democracy, for it is through robust democratic systems that we can achieve greater prosperity and political stability,” he urged, calling on both leaders and citizens to commit to building an inclusive and participatory system of governance.

By acknowledging both the strengths and imperfections of democracy, Dr. Bawumia encouraged a renewed dedication to improving democratic practices across the continent, ensuring that governance systems serve the best interests of their people.

Accept the will of the people for the survival of democracy – Bawumia urges African leaders

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on African leaders to prioritize respecting the will of their citizens through transparent and fair elections as a critical measure to safeguard democracy on the continent.

Speaking on Monday, January 27, during a forum on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria, Dr. Bawumia raised concerns about the weakening state of democratic institutions and political stability in Africa. He cited alarming trends of political instability, constitutional manipulation, and a surge in military coups that have disrupted governance in several nations.

“Between 2020 and 2023, there were approximately eight coup d’états in Africa,” he revealed, adding that these incidents reflect a deepening crisis of governance in the region. He further lamented the actions of some leaders who amend constitutions to extend their time in office, warning that such practices jeopardize the democratic order.

“A few leaders have also changed or are changing their constitutions to allow them to stay in power beyond their constitutionally mandated terms,” Dr. Bawumia noted, emphasizing that these actions erode trust in governance and threaten political stability.

Highlighting the centrality of elections in a functioning democracy, Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for leaders, especially incumbents, to embrace the outcomes of electoral processes. “Leaders (especially incumbents) must trust the electoral process and accept the will of the people for the survival of democracy,” he urged.

While acknowledging the challenges inherent in democratic governance, he maintained that democracy remains the most effective system for ensuring political stability and advancing the welfare of citizens. He noted that adherence to the rule of law, respect for the electorate’s voice, and accountability are essential for democracy to thrive.

“Democracy is not without its challenges, but it remains the best system of governance when leaders respect the rule of law and the voice of the people,” he asserted.

Dr. Bawumia also extended his message to the international community, advocating for a united effort to combat rising authoritarianism and protect democratic principles globally. According to him, a commitment to fairness, transparency, and integrity in governance is vital for sustaining democratic institutions and fostering peace and development.

He noted that he had anticipated the Electoral Commission would take between 48 and 72 hours to announce the results. However, as tensions rose and the potential for violence increased with delays, he decided to act quickly.

“I was fully aware of the escalating tension and the possibility of unrest if the results weren’t announced promptly,” he said. “The situation was becoming increasingly volatile.”

Understanding the potential for conflict, Dr. Bawumia explained that his choice to concede early was a deliberate strategy to prevent unrest.

“I chose to hold a press conference the following morning at 9 a.m. to publicly concede, even before the official results were announced by the Electoral Commission,” he revealed.

His decision was aligned with his ongoing commitment to the core values of Ghana’s democracy. Dr. Bawumia noted that his swift action was aimed at minimizing the chances of violence while demonstrating political maturity and respect for the electoral system.

NPP National Treasurer tells Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to render accounts

National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Charles Dwamena, has directed members of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to provide a detailed account of the funds and logistics allocated to them during the recently concluded campaign.

In a press release issued on Monday, December 30, 2024, Dr. Dwamena, popularly known as Dr. China, emphasized that accountability is non-negotiable and a critical step in evaluating the outcomes of the campaign.

“Any officer, be it an executive or a member of the campaign team, who was given funds/resources during the 2024 campaign will be made to account for the allocated funds/resources,” he assured party members.

According to him, proper accountability is essential to understanding what may have gone wrong in the campaign and ensuring the party’s structures remain transparent and effective.

Addressing a separate issue regarding ID cards for party executives, Dr. Dwamena clarified that over 90% of the ID cards for executive members, from the polling station level to the national level, were printed and distributed in 2022. The remaining 10%, he noted, are available at the party headquarters and awaiting collection by the regional secretariats.

“The issuance of ID cards to executive members has been very successful,” Dr. China stated, adding that this milestone has paved the way for the registration and issuance of ID cards to non-executive members, which is currently ongoing in various constituencies. He encouraged all non-executive members to take advantage of the process and register.

Responding to concerns about the management of party donations, Dr. Dwamena reassured members that all contributions are deposited into party accounts and not diverted into individual pockets. He explained that the party’s structures and protocols ensure accountability and prevent unilateral decisions regarding the use of funds.

“…The structures and working procedures of the party make it impossible for the National Treasurer to make unilateral decisions let alone spend funds without approval,” he clarified. “For every expenditure, approval is given by the National Chairman and the General Secretary, after which the National Treasurer sees to proper disbursement of such funds.”

Dr. Dwamena expressed gratitude to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and other prominent party figures for their financial and logistical contributions to the party’s activities, acknowledging their ongoing support.

Dr. Bawumia noted that more than 2 million potential NPP voters did not cast their ballots.

During a meeting with party communicators, he reassured them that the issue has been recognized and that plans are in place to tackle it in the next elections.

“It was a big disappointment; there was no doubt about it when the results came because all the work we had done pointed to the fact that we were winning this election. I mean, there was clear evidence on the ground as to all the 270 constituencies.

“It was clear that we were going to do well, but on the day of the election, something was amiss. The turnout was so low. Everybody was wondering what was happening, why, and where are our people. And that was from Axim all the way to Zebilla, and everybody was wondering, where are our people? What was going on?” he questioned.

Bawumia, who doubles as the Vice President of the country, continued, “It turned out that everybody decided to stay, that they wouldn’t vote. And it was almost as if they had a meeting and decided on the message. The same message, no matter which constituency you went to, they would tell you they are not voting.

“So, at least you know where the problem is. And to solve the problem, you have to know what it is, so our people didn’t vote. That was the problem.”

He added, “The question now is why they didn’t vote, and that is a research question we are going to answer now. I must say we worked very hard, and I am very proud of the communication team. We were working against their ownership of, or support from, key media houses. Isn’t it so? Put that as a disadvantage in many ways in terms of communication. We had a lot of these key media houses who were not on our side.”

On Monday, December 9, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa officially announced John Mahama as the victor of the 2024 presidential elections, securing 6,328,397 votes.

Dr. Bawumia, his closest rival, garnered 4,657,304 votes. Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also made history by winning a majority in Parliament. Mahama is set to take office on January 7, 2025.

God’s ways are not our ways, let us stand together – Bawumia to NPP supporters

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has advised New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters against blaming each other for the party’s defeat, warning that such behavior could undermine the party’s cohesion.

In a meeting with party leaders from the Klottey Korley constituency, Dr. Bawumia pointed to low voter turnout as the main reason for the loss.

He explained that a closer look at the election results revealed that the NPP had unintentionally handed the victory to the NDC, rather than the opposition surpassing their previous 2020 performance.

“We couldn’t meet our expectations that is why we conceded. That doesn’t mean it is over. We lost a battle, not the war. I want to encourage you all. In this election, we were the ones that gave the victory to NDC. They didn’t win because their numbers didn’t change from 2020.

“Ours reduced by 40 percent. I want you all to understand that united we stand, but divided we fall. I have seen many people in pain, but I have an abiding belief in God. His ways are not our ways.

“Blame games will destroy us. Let us stand together. Stop the blame games. Let’s look at the future. Let’s concentrate on strengthening the party. It is not about individual ambition. I know we will come out successful.”

Stop the acts of lawlessness and brutality – Bawumia to NDC

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to put an end to what he described as “lawlessness and thuggery” by some of its supporters following the announcement of the 2024 election results.

In a statement issued on December 9, Dr. Bawumia urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to take responsibility and ensure peace and unity in the country.

“I wish to call on the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to exhibit statesmanship by reining in his supporters in order to preserve the peace and unity of the country,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The NPP presidential candidate expressed concern over reports of NDC supporters besieging collation centres and “allegedly forcing declarations in favor of NDC parliamentary candidates while others have vandalised state agencies.”

Dr. Bawumia further criticized the NDC’s silence on these alleged acts of violence and intimidation against NPP members, state institutions, and individuals perceived to be NPP sympathizers.

“These wanton acts of lawlessness and brutality have been extended to state institutions and public offices, looting and stealing state properties in the process,” he added.

He cautioned that such actions undermine the democratic culture Ghana has worked hard to build and nurture.

Jean Mensa added that the results from the nine constituencies would be compiled and incorporated into the final record once they are available.

Bawumia declined our request for a ‘presidential interview’ – BBC

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), a public service broadcaster in the United Kingdom, has disclosed that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, denied its request for an interview ahead of the West African country’s elections.

Ahead of the December 7 polls, the BBC said it reached out to the front runners of the presidential race, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Mahama and Dr Bawumia but only Mahama accepted their request for an interview.

“The BBC has asked for an interview with the other main presidential candidate, Ghana’s current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, but he has declined,” the BBC wrote in a post on Instagram.

The ruling party is yet to comment on the subject matter.

John Mahama, who engaged BBC’s Thomas Naadi, discussed the idea of a 24-hour economy, whether or not he will sign into law Ghana’s anti-LGBT legislation should he be elected, and the issue of illegal mining.

On the verdict of the elections, he said, “I will accept the election results only if the process is fair,” and on assenting to the the controversial anti-LGBTQI bill, formally titled the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” should he become president, the former president said, “It depends on what is in the Bill.”

Touching on the cost of the 24-hour economy he seeks to implement, Mahama, when asked about how much it would cost, said, “you can’t put a cost on it immediately. 24-hour economy is not an event; it is a process. And so even while we are stabilising the macroeconomic environment and bringing inflation down and interest rates down, we will be implementing the 24-hour economy.”

When asked about the possibility of executing the agenda in 4 years, he said, “we will start at least”. Touching on the continuous implementation even after he leaves office, Mahama said,”four years, is that the end of Ghana? So after four years, that’s it?”

He added that it “would be Ghana’s loss” if the government that succeed’s his decides no longer to implement the 24-hour economy.

With regards to illegal mining popularly known as ‘Galamsey’, he noted that his government will combat the menace by “stopping mining in forest reserves and secondly, stop mining on water bodies.”

On the prosecution of anti-galamsey protestors, he assured that he would direct the Attorney-General to “file a nolle prosequi and stop their prosecution”

“To be remanded to custody for two weeks because of going on a protest, I think it was high-handed,” he added.

The protest in the country descended into chaos, leading to the arrest of 53 demonstrators in September. Among the detainees are Oliver Barker Vormawor, Grace Asantewaa, Felicity Nelson and Elorm Ama Ababio, popularly known as Ama Governor.

They face charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, and assault on a public officer. Despite pleading not guilty, the court remanded them.
