Govt is yet to our allowances – 2022 Pharm D House officers to Bawumia

The 2022 Pharm D House Officers have released a statement responding to recent assertions by Dr. Armoskoh, a member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, who claimed that the officers’ allowances had been disbursed.

In their statement, the officers clarified that none of their outstanding allowances or compensation for completing their housemanship has been received.

The statement, posted by GhOne TV on social media, emphasized that the unpaid funds are not optional allowances but legally mandated compensation, comparable to a salary, owed for their full-time professional responsibilities.

“We clarify that, contrary to these statements, we have not received our unpaid allowances or any other form of compensation for our completed housemanship.

“The funds due are essential, legally earned through non-discretionary allowances but mandated compensation akin to a salary,” the statement read.

The group highlighted that the delayed payments have led to significant financial strain and emotional stress, noting that they fulfill the same obligations and responsibilities as other healthcare professionals in similar training roles.

“Our work, directly supporting patient outcomes and public health, has been conducted under the same commitments and responsibilities held by medical doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in similar training roles.

“The non-payment of these due amounts has placed undue financial strain on us, leading to economic hardship and emotional distress,” the statement added.

The Pharm D House Officers urged the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities to expedite the release of their outstanding allowances. They also called on government representatives to refrain from misrepresenting the matter and to recognize the urgency for a prompt resolution.

“We call upon the Ministry of Health and all relevant bodies to prioritize the immediate release of these funds. We also urge government representatives to refrain from misrepresenting this issue and instead acknowledge the need for a swift resolution.

“We stand ready to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure a transparent payment system for all future cohorts,” the statement read.

    Background

In June 2024, 322 Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) House Officers threatened legal action against the Ministry of Health over unpaid allowances for their year-long mandatory housemanship.

In an official letter, the officers highlighted ongoing concerns, referencing prior letters and meetings with the Pharmacy Council. They cautioned that they would pursue court intervention if the matter remained unresolved.

In a sharp response to Mahama’s recent five-question challenge, Dr. Bawumia criticized the former president for what he termed “flimsy questions,” and urged him to engage in an open debate for the Ghanaian public to assess their policies, achievements, and visions.

Our track records will give us victory in December Polls – Bawumia

The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed unwavering confidence in the party’s prospects for electoral victory.

During an event held at the Okaishie Market on Tuesday, October 29, he emphasized the NPP’s track record of consistent efforts and achievements across various sectors, which he believes will underpin their success in the upcoming December elections.

“What I see based on all the places I have been indicates that Insha Allah, the NPP will win the 2024 election come December 7. We are going to win because of the work we have done.

“Before we came into office, we promised that we would implement a free senior high school policy. At the time we made the promise, the then-president told us that we were deceiving Ghanaians. He said it was not possible. But I said that it was possible,”  he stated.

He recalled the NPP’s commitment to implementing a free senior high school policy, referencing skepticism from the previous administration.

As part of his campaign efforts, Dr. Bawumia resumed activities in Accra, touring key markets in the Ablekuma South and Odododiodoo constituencies.

His tour began at the Tuesday Market in Ablekuma South, where he received an enthusiastic reception from a large crowd of party supporters.

  • I haven’t seen any bad thing from Bawumia since I met him – Akufo-Addo

I haven’t seen any bad thing from Bawumia since I met him – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed strong support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the ideal successor to lead Ghana forward.

Speaking on October 29 during a tour of the Ahafo Region, Akufo-Addo commended Bawumia’s loyalty, steadfastness, and dedication since they began working together in 2008.

Reflecting on their partnership, Akufo-Addo praised Bawumia’s commitment to Ghana’s development and expressed confidence in his vice president’s vision to elevate the nation to an advanced stage. He emphasized that Ghana’s future needs a leader with Bawumia’s consistency and leadership, qualities he believes are essential to sustaining progress.

Akufo-Addo contrasted Bawumia’s leadership potential with that of the opposition candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama. Citing Mahama’s previous administration from 2012 to 2016, he suggested that the former president’s tenure lacked the transformative drive Ghana now requires, positioning Bawumia as the leader best suited to continue Ghana’s development.

Reflecting on his decision to introduce Bawumia to politics, Akufo-Addo recounted, “Dr. Bawumia was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana when I brought him into politics. When I first picked him in 2008, even though we lost the polls, I kept faith in him. We lost again in 2012, but by God’s grace, we won the 2016 election, and since then, I have not seen any bad thing from him.”

Addressing the people of Ahafo, Akufo-Addo urged them to support Bawumia in the upcoming election, encouraging a strong show of confidence in his leadership by voting in his favour. “I can vouch for his capabilities and his ability to lead the country, and I will not leave Ghana for someone who can’t do the job. God will not allow that to happen,” he said.

With these remarks, Akufo-Addo signaled his hope to bolster support for Bawumia’s candidacy, framing it as essential to secure the progress his administration has achieved and to ensure a prosperous future for Ghana.

  • The only person who can continue my work is Bawumia – Akufo-Addo

The only person who can continue my work is Bawumia – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has declared his firm belief that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the best candidate to succeed him and lead Ghana forward.

Speaking during his tour of the Ahafo Region on Tuesday, October 29, President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Bawumia’s qualifications, emphasizing that his vision and leadership abilities make him uniquely suited to advance Ghana to a new level of development.

Highlighting his dedication to the country’s future, the President noted that he is motivated to ensure Ghana’s progress remains in the hands of someone capable.

According to President Akufo-Addo, only Dr. Bawumia, with his strong dedication and proven track record, has the right experience to guide the nation’s development. In his remarks, he contrasted Dr. Bawumia with National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dramani Mahama, citing Mr. Mahama’s tenure from 2012 to 2016 as evidence of limited leadership and economic management skills.

“As I am about to leave, I have one plea; as you all know, if any president is about to leave office, he cares about who is succeeding him. My plea is that the only person who can continue the work I have done and move Ghana forward, taking the country to an advanced stage, is my Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said. “I can vouch for his capabilities and his ability to lead the country, and I will not leave Ghana for someone who can’t do the job. God will not allow that to happen.”

President Akufo-Addo urged Ahafo Region residents to support Dr. Bawumia’s vision by voting decisively in his favour, underscoring that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership would ensure the continuity of Ghana’s development path.

Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s journey, President Akufo-Addo noted, “Dr. Bawumia was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana when I brought him into politics. When I first picked him in 2008, even though we lost, I kept faith with him for the 2012 election, which we also lost, but God being so good, we won the 2016 election, and I have not seen any bad thing from him since I first met him.”

Mahama poses 5 questions to ‘economic messiah’ Bawumia

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the upcoming Election 2024, has posed a series of probing questions directed at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mahama insisted that Bawumia respond to these inquiries, echoing his earlier demand for answers to 170 claims made by former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

During his recent tour of the Northern Region, Mahama criticized Bawumia for shifting his focus from economic issues to digitalization initiatives.

He argued that this transition signals a neglect of urgent economic challenges that require immediate attention.

“gbegbegbegbe about the economy,” however, “today he can’t mention ‘economy’, it is not in his vocabulary. Anytime he opens his mouth ‘digitalisation,” he added

In light of these concerns, Mahama has laid out several questions for Bawumia to address.

He wants to know why the exchange rate has reached GH¢17 to $1 and how Ghana’s national debt has surged from GH¢120 billion to GH¢767 billion in just eight years.

Mahama is also curious about the reasons behind the current inflation rate, especially considering it peaked at 54 percent during Bawumia’s administration.

Additionally, he questions why Bawumia borrowed GH¢42 billion from the Bank of Ghana, resulting in the Central Bank’s record loss of GH¢60 billion, and why he has stopped giving lectures on economic matters.

  • You are the chosen one for the presidency – Kpassa Paramount Chief to Bawumia

You are the chosen one for the presidency – Kpassa Paramount Chief to Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has received an endorsement from Dr. Ubor Tossan Konja VI, the Paramount Chief of the Kpassa Traditional Area.

In a video shared by GhanaWeb on Monday, October 28, 2024, during Dr. Bawumia’s visit to the Oti Region, the chief expressed his firm belief that Bawumia is already destined to become the next president of Ghana. He further suggested that extensive campaigning is unnecessary, given this conviction.

“As for the election, you have already won. Your campaign tour is simply an opportunity to engage with the youth who may not yet know you as Ghana’s President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. There is no need for you to campaign because victory is already yours,” he said.

Dr. Ubor Tossan Konja VI voiced his concerns regarding the lack of developmental projects in the district, specifically highlighting the poor condition of the Damongo-Nkwanta Road and the absence of a district hospital.

He urged Dr. Bawumia to prioritize these issues and implement necessary improvements once he officially takes office as president of Ghana.

“We urge you to prioritise the development of our Damongo-Nkwanta Road, as this is a major concern for us. Additionally, we lack a district hospital where pregnant women and sick patients can receive treatment.

“Currently, they are referred all the way to Nkwanta or Tamale, which significantly impacts their health. Many of these women end up undergoing surgery and, tragically, some lose their lives. We appeal to you to address these issues once you are officially sworn in,” he appealed.

Vote for me and I will build Astroturf nationwide – Bawumia to Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced an ambitious plan to provide every district in Ghana with an Astroturf if he wins the presidency.

Highlighting the NPP government’s achievements under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia noted that the administration has built approximately 150 Astroturfs across the country, a significant increase from the mere three that existed in 2017.

During a recent campaign stop in Dambai, he promised to construct an Astroturf for the community and emphasized his commitment to expanding sporting facilities nationwide.

“In the next few weeks, we will be building an Astroturf for you at Dambai. From the way things are going, every district must have an Astroturf. When we assumed office in 2017, there were just three Astroturfs nationwide, but after eight years, we have increased that number to 150.

“When we come into power again, we will make sure the rest of the districts without one will get it,” he said in a video shared by GHOne TV on X.

As the December 7, 2024, elections approach, Dr. Bawumia continues to engage with communities to outline his policies and vision for Ghana.

Which of your policies have been beneficial to Ghanaians? – Bawumia quizzes Mahama

The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown a public challenge to former President John Dramani Mahama, asking him to point out a single policy from his time in office that has truly benefited Ghanaians.

He issued this challenge on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, during a visit to Ketu North in the Volta Region.

Addressing the constituents, Dr. Bawumia urged them to cast their votes in his favor, assuring them that his policies are designed to significantly enhance the lives of Ghanaians.

“I asked him [Mahama] the other day, tell us one policy that you’ve brought to Ghana as president or vice president that has positively impacted Ghanaians. He still cannot tell us,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He continued: “If you ask me, Dr. Bawumia, even though I haven’t been president, I can give you 33 different policies in this government… So you know with Dr. Bawumia, there will be new ideas.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, further boosting his credentials, highlighted his clean record as a Vice President, free from any corruption-related scandals.

During his visit to Ketu North, he held a stakeholder meeting in Dzodze, where Rev. Dr. Solomon Paintsil of the Assemblies of God Church commended him for his visionary leadership.

“With you, it is possible, because of you Ghana can pride itself on certain facilities that other nations don’t dream of… We applaud you, Sir,” Rev. Dr. Paintsil remarked.

  • I will make Ho Municipality a Metropolitan – Bawumia

I will make Ho Municipality a Metropolitan – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has confirmed plans to upgrade Ho Municipality to a metropolitan area.

A municipality is a smaller administrative division that typically covers towns, districts, or smaller cities, whereas a metropolitan area generally refers to a large city or a highly urbanized area that may include multiple surrounding municipalities or districts.

According to him, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has made significant strides toward meeting the necessary criteria, with an official declaration expected soon.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Ho Municipal Assembly Complex, Dr. Bawumia said the move follows a request from the Asogli Traditional Council.

“I am happy to say that works are far advanced, and very soon we will have Ho declared a Metro,” he stated.

He urged the community to support his agenda of development and reject former President John Mahama’s call for resetting the country’s progress.

“This is an upgrade, and we should not reset it back to how it was,” he emphasized.

Highlighting the government’s equitable distribution of infrastructure, Dr. Bawumia touted their achievements in roads, schools, and public projects as unprecedented in the Fourth Republic.

Divine Bosson, Ho Municipal Chief Executive and NPP Parliamentary Candidate, appealed for voter support, citing the NPP’s development projects as evidence of their commitment to the region.

The newly inaugurated two-story Ho Municipal Assembly Complex, which includes offices, an assembly hall, and other facilities, is one of two new complexes built to resolve office space issues in the Volta Region.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia recently inaugurated a multi-million cedi ultramodern Municipal Assembly Complex in Ho Central.

The event attracted a large crowd, including traditional chiefs, queen mothers, party executives, and supporters, showcasing the NPP’s commitment to infrastructure development in the region.

In his speech, Dr. Bawumia praised the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and NPP parliamentary candidate, Bosson R.K Divine, for his significant contributions to the development of Ho Central Municipality.

He urged the constituents to support his bid for the presidency and vote for Mr. Divine on December 7, promising further development projects.

Mr. Divine expressed his deep gratitude and joy, calling the commissioning a historic moment for the municipality.

“This moment marks a significant milestone in the development of our beloved municipality, as it provides a fitting home for the administration that will drive our collective progress for many years to come.

“But, just like the crave for a municipal status for the then Ho District Assembly, and which only become a reality during the reign of the NPP under the gentle giant President J.A Kufuor, the quest for a befitting office space as predestined also become a reality under an NPP administration of Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia,” he said.

He also commended his predecessors for their diverse roles to acquire a befitting office accommodation for this Assembly, albeit without success.

“Indeed, these two episodes I have mentioned cannot be mere coincidence! It just goes to show the government that truly cares about the affairs of the municipality, and who should be entrusted with the management of the affairs of this country.”

“Togbe Chairman, I am so grateful for the support I have received from the executives, members and teeming supporters of the NPP at the National, regional and constituency levels. Their sense of patriotism, energy and industry is highly appreciated. At this point, let me mention also the tremendous support and fatherly advice I always receive from my father the Hon. Regional Minister (Dr. Yao Archibald Letsa). Daddy, I am most grateful,” he added.

  • Why rush for Majority position 6 weeks to election? – Bawumia quizzes NDC MPs

Why rush for Majority position 6 weeks to election? – Bawumia quizzes NDC MPs

Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has questioned the opposition NDC’s eagerness to claim a majority in Parliament just six weeks ahead of the December election.

Addressing a crowd in Ho, Dr. Bawumia ridiculed the NDC, suggesting their rush to hold a majority position—despite the upcoming polls—is driven by panic over their expected loss.

Last week, the Speaker of Parliament declared four parliamentary seats vacant after MPs filed to contest December’s election on different party tickets. However, the Supreme Court intervened, staying the Speaker’s decision and directing Parliament to continue recognizing the MPs until further interpretation of the relevant legal article.

Despite this, the NDC Minority has been vocal in the media, claiming a majority status. Dr. Bawumia criticized their stance, stating, “Just think about it: we have six weeks until the election, and their only concern is that they want to be the majority for six weeks after being the minority for eight years. Why? What is the rush? It’s because they know they have lost the election. They want to taste the majority position for just six weeks.”

Dr. Bawumia reiterated his confidence that the NPP will win both the presidential and parliamentary elections, securing a decisive majority based on the party’s achievements across constituencies.

Meanwhile, Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has asserted that the NDC will resume their rightful place as the Majority when Parliament is recalled.

Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps following the indefinite adjournment of the House, Dr. Forson reaffirmed the NDC’s stance: “We want to make something very clear, the NDC members of parliament are in the Majority in Ghana’s parliament. We’ve made our position, and it’s so clear. We are not changing our positions. We see ourselves as the Majority. We are fortified by the Constitution and the Standing Orders of this House, and we see ourselves as the Majority.”

He expressed gratitude to Speaker Alban Bagbin for his directive, which the NDC respects, and emphasized the caucus’s readiness to assume the Majority position when Parliament reconvenes.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has once again emphasized his dedication to tackling the pressing issue of youth unemployment in Ghana, promising a bold initiative to create one million jobs if he wins the presidency.

Addressing a crowd in Kpando, Volta Region, Bawumia laid out his vision, which centers on providing digital skills to young Ghanaians, regardless of their formal education level. His goal is to equip them with the tools necessary to thrive in the growing global digital economy.

He underscored that youth unemployment is a national crisis that requires immediate and innovative solutions.

The NPP flagbearer assured that his government would make the digital skills training accessible to all, even those without formal education, enabling them to work for international companies from their hometowns.

Bawumia also pledged to create a conducive environment for tech-based businesses and start-ups, saying, “All the youth, we need jobs. I am going to give one million youths digital skills in Ghana. Everybody, even if you are a school dropout, we can give you digital skills.

“You will stay in Kpando and work in America, in Germany, in Japan, in the UK, and in the US. Work right from here with your digital skills.”

Bawumia promises ‘One District, One Modern Market’

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to implement a “One District, One Modern Market” initiative if elected in the upcoming December 7 elections.

The initiative aims to build modern marketplaces in all 275 districts across the country, providing much-needed infrastructure for traders, particularly women, who play a vital role in Ghana’s economy.

Speaking about the plan, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to empowering market women through this initiative. “I want to help traders. If you want to help traders, there must be markets. I have two main policies. Any district that does not have a modern market, there has to be a modern market.”

He further highlighted the government’s track record in addressing infrastructural deficits, citing the Agenda 111 project and road improvements through the District Roads Improvement Program (DRIP). “You see the mindset we have since we came into power. Every district without a hospital, we have solved that with Agenda 111. Every district without road equipment, we have solved it with DRIP,” he added.

  • Stop sitting in Parliament and creating a Majority for yourself – Bawumia to NDC MPs

Stop sitting in Parliament and creating a Majority for yourself – Bawumia to NDC MPs

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to focus on winning parliamentary seats at the polling stations rather than attempting to “manufacture” a majority within Parliament.

This statement follows a recent incident in Parliament where the Speaker declared four seats vacant, temporarily shifting the majority in favor of the NDC. However, the Supreme Court overturned the Speaker’s ruling within 24 hours, restoring the status quo until further interpretation of the relevant constitutional article is provided.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Nkawkaw on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia taunted the NDC for their brief majority status, saying, “A few days ago, they (NDC) did something in Parliament and claimed to be the majority side. But their majority lasted just 24 hours. It was the shortest-living majority in history.”

He emphasized that a parliamentary majority is determined by wins at the polling station level within constituencies, not by actions in Parliament. “They need to understand that if they want a majority, they should come to the polling station, come to the constituency, win an election, and then go to Parliament. You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia confidently declared that the NPP is on track to secure a decisive majority in the December elections, asserting that victories are achieved on the ground, not in parliamentary chambers. “We will meet them in the constituencies, we will meet them at the polling stations. What I can assure you is that from what I’ve seen—having been to over 200 constituencies, campaigned on the ground, and analyzed the data—I can tell you, if we held elections today, the NPP would have a decisive majority in Parliament,” he said.

He further urged NPP members to stay united and continue working towards victory in the upcoming elections. “The election is not today. It’s on December 7. But if we continue as we are, and we all come together, by midnight on December 7, you’ll hear that the NPP has won a decisive majority in Parliament. We will win at the polling stations,” he stressed.

In a bold move, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared itself the new majority in Parliament, despite a recent Supreme Court order.

The declaration came during a press conference held shortly after the court’s decision to stay the Speaker’s ruling that had temporarily granted the NDC a majority status.

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for briefly claiming a parliamentary majority, following a recent ruling by the Speaker of Parliament.

The Speaker had declared four seats vacant, impacting the NPP’s majority in Parliament, only for the Supreme Court to stay the decision within 24 hours.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Nkawkaw on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that parliamentary majorities are determined through constituency wins, not decisions made within Parliament itself.

“A few days ago, they (NDC) did something in Parliament and claimed to be the majority side,” he said. “But their majority lasted just 24 hours. It was the shortest-living majority in history.”

Dr. Bawumia’s comments came after the Speaker of Parliament’s declaration of the four seats vacant, which briefly tipped the balance of power in favour of the NDC. However, the Supreme Court swiftly intervened, issuing a stay of execution and nullifying the Speaker’s decision until the court hears the substantive case on the interpretation of the constitutional article in question.

The Vice President reiterated that parliamentary majorities are secured through elections at the polling stations. “If they want a majority, they should come to the polling station, come to the constituency, win an election, and then go to Parliament,” he remarked. “You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself.”

Dr. Bawumia further expressed confidence in the NPP’s ability to win a decisive majority in the upcoming December elections, pointing to his extensive campaign work across the country.

“We will meet them in the constituencies, we will meet them at the polling stations,” he stated. “From what I’ve seen—having been to over 200 constituencies, campaigned on the ground, and analysed the data—I can tell you, if we held elections today, the NPP would have a decisive majority in Parliament.”

He encouraged NPP supporters to stay united and continue their efforts ahead of the December 7 elections, emphasizing that victory would be determined at the polling stations. “By midnight on December 7, you’ll hear that the NPP has won a decisive majority in Parliament,” Dr. Bawumia confidently predicted.

Debating Bawumia would be a mistake – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has firmly rejected the idea of debating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer. This stance follows President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s challenge for Mahama to engage in a debate on significant national issues leading up to the December 7 elections.

At a mini-rally in Prampram during his Greater Accra Region campaign, Mahama defended his presidential record and dismissed calls for a debate, asserting that his achievements should speak for themselves.

Critiquing Bawumia’s economic management, Mahama highlighted the difficulties Ghanaians are experiencing under the current administration.

He emphasized that participating in a debate would unjustly elevate Bawumia’s profile.

“Nana Akufo-Addo was asking me why I’m refusing to debate Bawumia. You know, Bawumia doesn’t deserve a debate. He is losing this election. I will not elevate him to my level and go and sit and debate him.

“Their campaign is failing. They have no message and so, he wants to be elevated to my level. No. No. No. No. I know my level,” he said.

A total of 620 women have successfully graduated from the Kayayei Skills Empowerment Programme, an initiative launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to uplift women in the informal sector.

The graduation ceremony for this fifth cohort took place on Tuesday, October 15, at the Madina Kayayei Hostel, celebrating another milestone in the programme’s efforts to equip women with vital vocational skills.

Since its inception, the Kayayei Empowerment Programme has equipped a total of 3,000 women with vocational skills designed to foster economic independence. The programme, run by the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP), has been training women in six specialised areas: soap and detergent making, baking, beads and jewellery making, décor, pedicure and manicure, and make-up artistry.

The 620 graduates received not only comprehensive training but also starter packs and a GHC 1,000 stipend to help launch their businesses. This practical support is meant to ensure they can immediately apply their newly acquired skills to generate income and improve their livelihoods.

Many graduates from previous cohorts have successfully set up their own businesses, contributing to their communities and the broader economy. NEIP’s Monitoring and Evaluation Department has been actively tracking the progress of these women, with plans to produce a documentary highlighting their success stories.

As the programme continues into November, more women are expected to enroll, with the ultimate goal of empowering thousands more to achieve economic self-sufficiency and transform their lives.

Ghanaians want Mahama to debate Bawumia on key issues of our country – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has thrown a challenge to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to engage in a public debate with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During his tour of the Northern Region, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the growing calls from Ghanaians for a debate between the two leaders, noting that such a discourse is essential for informed decision-making ahead of the elections.

According to the President, Dr. Bawumia is a reliable and clear-minded leader who has proven his competence over time, making him more than capable of debating Mahama on the key issues facing the country. Akufo-Addo questioned why Mahama appears reluctant to confront Bawumia in a public forum, asserting that this hesitation raises doubts about Mahama’s ability to address critical national matters.

“The people of Ghana deserve the debate so they can see who is doing what and who is saying what,” Akufo-Addo said. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, particularly regarding crucial policies such as the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) initiative. The President pointedly asked Mahama to clarify his position on the policy, stating, “Mr. Mahama, which is which? What should the Ghanaian people take from you as your position on the Free SHS policy? Is it safe with you, and are you going to continue with it or are you going to cancel it?”

Akufo-Addo argued that it is essential for Ghanaians to hear both candidates articulate their visions for the future, especially on critical policies that impact the nation’s development. He reiterated that Vice President Bawumia is ready and willing to debate Mahama, calling on the former President to stop avoiding the opportunity for a direct exchange of ideas.

Akufo-Addo insisted that no one should be allowed to hold the highest office in the land if they cannot provide clear answers on fundamental issues like education. He urged Mahama to accept the challenge, noting that Ghanaians deserve a transparent and open debate between the two leaders before making their choice in the upcoming elections.

Nana Aba Anamoah hails Bawumia for practical solutions to galamsey

Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for proposing what she describes as the most practical solution to tackling illegal mining, or “galamsey.”

In a post on X on Friday, October 11, Anamoah expressed her support for Dr. Bawumia’s approach, emphasizing that his strategy demonstrates a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding the galamsey menace and offers sustainable solutions.

Nana Aba Anamoah highlighted the Vice President’s focus on technological interventions and structured measures to combat the root causes of galamsey, setting his plan apart from previous efforts.

“I just listened to Dr. Bawumia’s remarks on galamsey. Glad he’s finally commented on the menace. His solution is the most practical one I’ve heard so far. I hope he walks the talk if he gets the mandate,” she posted.

She pointed out that Dr. Bawumia’s proposed approach involves empowering the Ghana Geological Authority to identify gold-rich areas in the country. This, in turn, would allow the Minerals Commission to take full control of demarcating those areas for mining, rather than granting prospecting licenses for individuals to search for gold themselves.

Nana Aba Anamoah urged Ghanaians to support initiatives that prioritize the protection of the nation’s water bodies and forest reserves, stressing the need for sustainable development over short-term gains from illegal mining activities.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has assured farmers that a future government under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not impose a ‘smoke tax’ on agricultural activities.

His statement comes in response to claims made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that farmers could face additional tax burdens under a Bawumia-led government.

However, Mr. Ofosu Nkansah quickly refuted these claims in a Facebook post on Friday, October 11, labeling them as baseless propaganda.

“Enwusie tax or smoke tax for farmers by a Bawumia Government. This is the fake news yaanom are spreading in farming communities to get votes. Fellow Patriots, let’s counter their lies. NDC de3 they used to tell People we will move the sea koraa to Kumasi just to get votes,” he wrote.

He noted that the introduction of electronic buses is set to transform the transportation sector and significantly lower commuting costs. It is expected to reduce transportation expenses by as much as 40%.

“Promise Made – Promise Delivered… Electric Buses are coming. No fuel cost, low maintenance. Public transport fare to be reduced by about 40%,” Mr Nkansah wrote in a number of Facebook posts.

During his address at the Ofie Mega Walk in Akropong, Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), reiterated his commitment to reducing public transportation costs by at least 40% through the introduction of electric vehicles.

He confirmed that plans and estimates for the transition from traditional diesel, gas, and petrol-powered public transport to electric vehicles have been finalized, with the buses expected to arrive in Ghana before the December elections.

He emphasized that this shift will significantly lower transportation costs, ensuring the projected 40% reduction in public transport fares is realized promptly.

  • Engaging traditional priests on campaign tours doesn’t make anyone evil – NEIP Boss

Engaging traditional priests on campaign tours doesn’t make anyone evil – NEIP Boss

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has asserted that engaging with traditional priests during political campaigns should not be seen as immoral or wrong.

In a post on Facebook on Tuesday, October 1, Mr. Nkansah emphasized that Ghana is a multifaith state, and anyone seeking to serve as President must respect all major religions in the country.

“Ghana is a multifaith State. Whoever wants to serve us as President must have respect for all the major religions. Interacting with Traditional Priests on campaign tours doesn’t make anyone evil. Focus on your Religion and leave others to do theirs,” he wrote.

His remarks come in response to recent criticisms aimed at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for engaging with traditional priests during his campaign, which some have perceived as inappropriate.

Mr. Nkansah noted that Ghana is home to a diverse array of faiths, including Christianity, Islam, and various traditional beliefs. He highlighted that this diversity is a hallmark of the nation’s cultural richness and should be celebrated rather than criticized.

  • 2024 election outcome uncertain as polls predict victory for Bawumia, Mahama

2024 election outcome uncertain as polls predict victory for Bawumia, Mahama

Uncertainty looms over the likely victor as Ghana approaches the December 2024 presidential elections, with contrasting polls painting divergent outcomes for the flagbearers of the two major political parties tipped to be the forerunners.

Recent data from Global InfoAnalytics suggests that John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), maintains his lead in the poll with 51.1% of the votes.

In contrast, a separate poll from Outcomes International indicates that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will emerge with 49.4% of the votes, while Mahama follows closely with 45.1%. This divergence in polling outcomes raises critical questions about voter sentiment and the potential for an election runoff, leaving political analysts and the electorate alike in a state of uncertainty.

The final field poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics also reveals that using the likely voters’ model, Mahama is at 49.3%, while Bawumia is at 35.9%. The race is unlikely to go into a runoff as the yearly average of the poll shows Mahama at 53% and Bawumia at 36%. Voter apathy is expected to be a challenge for the governing NPP, as 16% of voters who say they will not vote are their supporters.

Importantly, the outcome of the December elections will depend on which candidate receives greater support from their base, as well as their ability to win floating voters. The poll suggests that while Bawumia receives 88% support from his base, Mahama attracts 96%, giving him an 8-point advantage. Among floating voters, Mahama leads Bawumia 54% to 23%, a 31-point advantage.

The Outcomes International poll highlights that less than 1% of the votes will be shared among other candidates, with 5.2% still undecided. A total of 25,911 respondents were interviewed across all 276 constituencies in the country, and the survey suggests that a runoff could be inevitable, as neither major party is projected to secure an outright majority in the first round.

Furthermore, the survey indicates that 49% of respondents identify with the NPP and NDC, with a considerable 3% yet to decide their preference. While Bawumia’s campaign has targeted Muslim demographics, the poll shows a significant decline in support among this group, dropping by nearly 4% from July to October 2024.

Additionally, among first-time voters, Mahama now leads with 46%, compared to Bawumia’s 38%. Notably, Mahama has gained support from 19% of voters who previously supported Nana Akufo-Addo in 2020, with greater switches occurring in regions like Greater Accra and Central.

Mahama is said to lead in twelve regions, with Bawumia only leading in four. As both candidates navigate this complex landscape, the polls reflect a deeply competitive race, with the possibility of smaller parties influencing the final outcome. With voter dissatisfaction at 77% among respondents, and the significance of party manifestos driving voter choices, the stakes are high,

Meanwhile, a recent survey by the Office of the President suggests that a run-off in the upcoming general presidential elections could be inevitable. This implies that the two major political parties; neither the National Democratic Congress (NDC) being led by former President John Dramani Mahama nor the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with its flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, are projected to secure an outright majority in the first round.

A total of 25,911 respondents were interviewed across all the 276 constituencies in the country. Out of this number, 12,664 (49%) were males with 13,247 (51%) being females, the survey shows.

When asked which political party they would vote for, 46.3% of the respondents mentioned the NDC and the NPP respectively while a considerable 3% are yet to decide their preference.

“The smaller parties and independent candidates shared 4.4% of the votes. This means the smaller parties have the capacity to push the elections to a run-off. Neither the NDC nor NPP can win the entire undecided component of electorates,” the survey highlighted.

In approximately 66 days, the country will reach a decisive conclusion, finalizing all projections and unveiling the true victor of the 2024 general elections.

  • The quest for a third force in Ghana’s political landscape

The quest for a third force in Ghana’s political landscape

For over three decades, two major parties: the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – deemed to be archnemises, have governed the country.

This duopoly has shaped the country’s democratic narrative since the Fourth Republic began in 1992, when the late former President Jerry John Rawlings won the presidential elections on the ticket of the NDC. Prior to this era, Ghana had witnessed a vibrant political culture with the Convention People’s Party (CPP) at the forefront, securing Ghana’s independence in 1957 under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s leadership.

However, since the inception of the Fourth Republic, the CPP and other smaller political entities have struggled to make a significant impact. The once-powerful CPP, along with other parties such as the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has been relegated to the political sidelines.

Despite the multi-party system that Ghana’s democracy allows, the dominance of the NPP and NDC has effectively sidelined any credible competition.

With the approach of the 2024 general elections, calls for a robust third force to challenge the dominance of the NPP and NDC have grown louder.

A growing number of Ghanaians are increasingly disillusioned with the repetitive cycle of governance by these two parties, attributing their dissatisfaction to underwhelming economic progress, unfulfilled promises, rampant corruption, and the persistent mismanagement of state resources.

The Call for Unity Among Smaller Parties

Several Ghanaians, including prominent legal practitioners such as Samson Lardy Anyenini and Martin Kpebu, have strongly advocated for a new political force that can rejuvenate the political landscape and offer a credible alternative to the electorate.

Both Anyenini and Kpebu argue that to break the duopoly, smaller political parties must unite. Anyenini proposes the idea of a “cartel” of smaller political organizations coming together, pooling their resources and collective strength to pose a significant challenge to the two major parties.

This proposed unity of smaller parties would include the CPP, PNC, PPP, and other entities, creating a formidable coalition that could win the trust of the electorate and challenge the status quo.

Kpebu, however, extends this call for unity beyond just political parties. He urges religious bodies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to form alliances to bolster the prospects of a third political force.

He recalls the TUC’s attempt to form a political party in the 1970s, which ultimately collapsed, but believes this failure should not deter them from trying again.

Both legal experts, along with other like-minded Ghanaians, argue that a strong third force will only emerge through collaboration and a collective push to harness the frustrations and desires of an electorate that is increasingly dissatisfied with the leadership of the NPP and NDC.

    The Numbers Tell the Story

    2008 elections

    Papa Kwesi Nduom (CPP) – 112,673 (1.32%)

    Edward Mahama (PNC) – 73,618 (0.86%)

    Emmanuel Ansah-Antwi (DFP) – 28,471 (0.33%)

    Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah (Independent candidate) – 19,178 (0.22%)

    Thomas Nuako Ward-Brew (DPP) – 8,367 (0.10%)

    Kwabena Adjei (RPD) – 6,443 (0.08%)

In the first round of the presidential election, neither Nana Akufo-Addo of NPP nor the late Prof John Evans Atta Mills of the opposition NDC won more than the 50 percent needed to avoid a run-off.

The Electoral Commission declared Atta Mills the winner with 50.23 per cent of the total votes cast in the run-off, against 49.77 per cent for Akufo-Addo.

In 2008, Paa Kwesi Nduom contested on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) but four years later, he founded the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and contested on its ticket in the subsequent elections.

    2012 elections

    John Mahama (NDC) – 5,573,572 (50.63%)

    Akufo-Addo (NPP) – 5,263,286 (47.81%)

    Paa Kwesi Nduom (PPP) – 64,267 (0.58%)

    Henry Herbert Lartey (GCPP) – 38,250 (0.35%)

    Hassan Ayariga (APC) – 24,621 (0.22%)

    Abu Sakara (CPP) – 20,109 (0.18%)

Jacob Osei Yeboah (Independent candidate) – 15,156 (0.14%)

    Kwasi Addai (UFP) – 8,909 (0.08%)

    2016 elections

    John Mahama (NDC) – 4,577,395 (44.35%)

    Akufo-Addo (NPP) – 5,551,028 (53.79%)

    Paa Kwesi Nduom (PPP) – 12,411 (1.09%)

    Ivor Greenstreet (CPP) – 25,502 (0.25%)

    Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (NDP) – 16,837 (0.16%)

    Edward Mahama (PNC) – 22,115 (0.21%)

Jacob Osei Yeboah (Independent candidate) – 14,998 (0.15%)

    2020 elections

    Akufo-Addo (NPP) – 6,730,587  (51.302%)

    John Mahama (NDC) – 6,213,182 (47.359%)

    Christian Kwabena Andrews (GUM) – 105,548  (0.805%)

    Ivor Kobina Greenstreet (CPP) – 12,200 (0.093%)

    Akua Donkor (GFP) – 5,574  (0.024%)

    Henry Herbert Lartey (GCPP) – 3,564 (0.027%)

    Hassan Ayariga (APC) – 7,138 (0.054%)

    Percival Kofi Akpaloo (LPG) – 7,683 (0.059%)

David Asibi Ayindenaba Apasera (PNC) – 10,882 (0.083%)

    Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku (PPP) – 6,849 (0.052%)

    Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (NDP) – 6,549 (0.050%)

Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker (Independent candidate) – 9,704 (0.074%)

Analysing four successive electoral cycles in Ghana paints a grim picture for the smaller parties. In the 2008 elections, various smaller parties, including the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the Convention People’s Party (CPP), collectively garnered less than 3% of the total votes. Despite their efforts, they failed to pose any serious challenge to the NPP or NDC.

This trend continued through the 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections, where the smaller parties’ vote shares consistently fell below 2%. Even in the 2020 elections, where dissatisfaction with the major parties was high due to economic challenges, the combined votes of smaller parties and independent candidates totalled less than 5%.

What Hinders the Rise of a Third Force?

Several challenges have prevented smaller parties from breaking through. Top among them is disunity. The inability of these parties to rally behind a single candidate or common vision has significantly weakened their impact. Each party has distinct goals and aspirations, often grounded in different ideological or personal motivations, making collaboration difficult.

Additionally, competition from the larger, well-established NPP and NDC is a major impediment. The extensive financial and logistical resources at the disposal of the two major parties make it difficult for smaller parties to compete on equal footing.

Voter loyalty is another critical factor. Many Ghanaians have deeply entrenched loyalties to either the NPP or NDC, making it difficult for smaller parties to sway the electorate..

The Lessons from Nigeria’s 2023 Elections

Ghanaians advocating for a third force often draw parallels with Nigeria’s 2023 elections, where third-force candidates performed remarkably well. In a historic outcome, Nigeria’s ruling party candidate, Bola Tinubu, won the presidency with just 36.6% of the vote, the lowest winning margin in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

The strength of the third-force candidates was particularly evident in states like Kano and Lagos, where they disrupted traditional voting patterns and prevented any candidate from winning a clear majority. This relative success, despite a lack of established political structures, has inspired hope that a similar political transformation could occur in Ghana.

    2024: A Year of Possibilities?

In less than four months, Ghana will head to the polls, and the focus is intensifying on the nation’s next presidential election. So far, only the NDC and NPP have successfully chosen their presidential candidates.

However, individuals like former Trade Minister and leader of the Movement for Change, John Alan Kyerematen, and Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, leader of The New Force, have also declared their intentions to run as independent candidates.

Many Ghanaians believe that these figures could represent the third force that the country has been searching for. Meanwhile, the People’s National Convention (PNC) has scheduled its elections for flagbearers and party executives on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) was supposed to hold its presidential primary on August 24, 2024.

As Ghana grapples with challenges like rising inflation, fuel and transport cost hikes, and increasing utility bills, many wonder if these issues will push voters towards a third force.

At present, both Mr Kyerematen and Nana Bediako have garnered a noticeable following, and there is speculation that they could pose a serious challenge to the two dominant parties, potentially leading to a runoff in the 2024 elections.

The Imminence of a Third Force

A third force is not a matter of if but when. The emergence of a strong third force could break the cycle of duopoly and provide a fresh direction for the country. However, achieving this goal will require unity among smaller parties, the establishment of robust organizational structures, and a shift in voter perceptions.

As Ghana approaches the 2024 elections, the question remains: Will a third force finally emerge, or will the NPP-NDC duopoly continue to dominate the political scene? The answer lies in the hands of the electorate and the ability of smaller parties to rise to the occasion.

Bawumia isn’t after money, he’s after your future – Samira Bawumia to Ghanaians

Second Lady Samira Bawumia has called on traders and residents of Adeiso in the Eastern Region to cast their votes decisively for her husband, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the nation’s next president.

Speaking during a campaign visit to the area, she emphasized that her husband is running not for personal gain but to serve the country. Addressing the traders and residents, she reminded them of President Akufo-Addo’s achievements and urged them to vote for Dr. Bawumia to build on the progress made under his leadership.

At the Adeiso market, Samira Bawumia highlighted her husband’s superior policies aimed at transforming the nation and stressed the importance of supporting him and the NPP in the upcoming election.

She expressed confidence that with God’s favor, the party will triumph in the December 7 general elections.

Addressing the traders’ concerns, the Second Lady assured them that under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, a new NPP government would resolve their challenges related to accessing funds. She outlined the Vice President’s commitment to improving access to capital for traders and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Samira Bawumia also shared plans to introduce policies to support businesses, including the establishment of a Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund and an SME bank.

Additionally, Fredrick Afom Obeng, the parliamentary candidate, noted that the NPP government has implemented several projects that have benefited the constituency. He urged the residents to vote for the party to continue these initiatives and help the NPP break the 8-year governance cycle.

Bawumia lacks capabilities to rule Ghana – GUM flagbearer

Founder and leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Christian Kwabena Andrews, widely known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has expressed doubts about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ability to lead the country as president.

He argues that Bawumia lacks the depth of thought required for the presidency and is not deserving of the nation’s highest office.

In an exclusive interview with GHOne TV on September 25, 2024, he pointed out various statements made by Bawumia that, in his view, undermine his suitability for the presidency.

“As for Bawumia, he does not have the capacity to become the president because he is not a deep thinker. I am telling you the fact.

“Is it not these economists that are collapsing the country?”

When he was challenged by the host, he stated, “Will a deep thinker exchange his gold for oil? Will a deep thinker tell people that we are going to give you 32 toilets and an airport?

“You just need an assemblyman to tell people such things, not the vice president. Going to give mobile phones on credit while people are suffering, what is this? If we don’t eat, do we go to the toilet?”

He also added that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, is also not fit to lead his party to the presidency again.

Wode Maya, NEIP boss ‘fight dirty’ over arrest of Democracy Hub protestors

Popular Ghanaian YouTuber, Wode Maya, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, engaged in a banter on social media over the arrest of individuals who participated in the just-ended Democracy Hub demonstration to demand an end to the activities of illegal miners in the country.

Out of the 42 arrested protestors, some 39 who were arraigned on Tuesday have been remanded for two weeks by the Accra Circuit Court.

Displeased by the Accra Circuit Court’s decision, Wode Maya in a post on Facebook requested that the arrested protestors be freed. “This is Not The Same Ghana We Know!#FreetheCitizens,” he wrote.

In response, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah referenced the home country of the YouTuber’s wife, Kenya- where some 270 citizens were arrested for participating in a protest against the government, indicating that the protestors should not be freed for being lawless.

“This happened in your wife’s country, Kenya. The Gh protesters were arrested for taking the law into their hands and creating inconvenience for road users.”

The comment did not sit well with Wode Maya, who then jabbed Mr Nkansah saying “I was definitely not expecting a wise comment from u considering your cover photo!”

Mr. Ofosu Nkansah’s cover photo features Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

Mr Nkansah in a subsequent post, interpreted Wode Maya’s message as an attack against individuals who support the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“According to Wodemaya, anybody who associates with the NPP or Bawumia brand can’t be wise. NPP supporters take note.”

Following the banter, Mr Nkansah decided to unfollow the YouTuber on his social media platforms.

    Aftermath of Democracy hub protest

The court remanded 28 of the arrested protestors into Police custody and the remaining 11 into Prison custody. Thirty (30) of the accused persons are to reappear before the court on 8th October 2024, while 9 others are to appear before the court on 11th October 2024. The remaining suspects will be put before the court to face justice. The case is being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney-General.

  • Your second coming is unnecessary, God has blessed you enough – Fmr Minister tells Mahama

Your second coming is unnecessary, God has blessed you enough – Fmr Minister tells Mahama

Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, who previously served as the Minister for Zongo and Inner-Cities Development, has provided an advice to former President John Dramani Mahama regarding his intention to run for re-election.

While speaking to Imams, Zongo Chiefs, and settler communities in Donkro Nkwanta, located in the Nkoranza South Constituency of the Bono East Region, Dr. Abdul-Hamid shared his perspective that if he were in Mahama’s position, he would have opted for retirement by now, given the many blessings he has received from God.

He highlighted that among the 32 million Ghanaians, Mahama is unique in having held a variety of high-level public roles, including Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President, and President.

“If the former President were a good Christian, he would have retired by now because the good Lord has been very good to him,” he added.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid remarked, suggesting that Mahama should be thankful for his extensive service rather than pursue another presidential term.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid also pointed out the remarkable opportunity the 2024 Presidential election presents, as it could lead to a president from Northern Ghana.

He expressed his support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, arguing that Bawumia is a preferable choice, as he has the potential to serve two full terms, unlike Mahama, who is constitutionally limited to just one more term.

Furthermore, he stressed the significance of accountability in leadership, suggesting that Dr. Bawumia would be more effective as he would be incentivized to seek re-election, whereas Mr. Mahama, lacking that option, might not be as motivated to govern effectively.

A video that surfaced online captures the joyful reaction from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team upon learning that the New Patriotic Party candidate had secured the number one spot on the 2024 election ballot.

In the clip, Bawumia, surrounded by key party members on his campaign bus, is seen smiling and enthusiastically singing along to Kwabena Kwabena’s song “Number One.”

The highlife track was originally composed for Nana Akufo-Addo’s 2016 presidential campaign.

On Friday, September 20, 2024, the Electoral Commission conducted a ballot draw for the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured the top spot on the ballot, while his key rival, former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC, landed the eighth position.

This ballot positioning has led to varied interpretations from supporters of both major parties and other contenders, with speculations on how it may influence voter perceptions and the outcome of the elections.

  • Actor Sylvester Agyapong goes hard on Bawumia, NPP govt over economic hardship

Actor Sylvester Agyapong goes hard on Bawumia, NPP govt over economic hardship

Renowned Kumawood actor, Sylvester Agyapong, has openly criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government over the growing economic hardships in the country.

In a post on the social media platform X, Agyapong took a direct swipe at the Vice President, questioning his recent campaign promises.

“You (Bawumia) brought all these taxes, and now you are campaigning against them. What is preventing you from throwing all these taxes away?” the actor wrote.

He went further to challenge Dr. Bawumia’s economic management, stating, “That if I take them off today, what am I going to take off tomorrow. Look at this. Such a speech coming from somebody who wants to lead this country. There is no job. Teachers and nurses are running away.”

Agyapong’s remarks came on the heels of the recent controversy surrounding taxes like the Electronic Transaction Levy (e-levy) and the betting tax. These policies, introduced under the NPP government, have been a focal point of criticism from many Ghanaians, who say they have worsened their financial situation.

While the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has consistently blamed Dr. Bawumia for these unpopular policies, Dr. Assibey Yeboah, Chairman of the NPP manifesto sub-committee on the economy, has defended the Vice President. In a media interview, Dr. Yeboah absolved Dr. Bawumia of responsibility, arguing that the Vice President, although head of the Economic Management Team, had expressed concerns about the implementation of these taxes but was overruled by the government’s collective decisions.

“Dr. Bawumia has been part of the government. In this manifesto, he said he will abolish the e-levy, he said he will abolish the betting tax. He didn’t run the show, so there are things in the manifesto that run contrary to what this government is doing. So if I have divergent views and I air them, is it criticising the government? No,” Dr. Yeboah explained.

He added that the Vice President’s campaign to repeal these taxes in the NPP’s 2024 manifesto is a reflection of his independent stance on managing the country’s tax system.

Despite this defense, Sylvester Agyapong’s comments reflect growing frustration among many Ghanaians, particularly in the entertainment industry, over the impact of government policies on their livelihoods. The actor’s bold critique has sparked discussions on social media, with many echoing his sentiments about the struggles faced by the average Ghanaian under the current administration.

As the 2024 elections draw closer, the debate over taxes and the country’s economic management continues to intensify, with Vice President Bawumia and the NPP government facing mounting pressure to address these concerns.

  • Vote for me and I will build you a mini harbour – Bawumia tells Sege residents

Vote for me and I will build you a mini harbour – Bawumia tells Sege residents

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has committed to developing a sea defence system and a mini harbour in Sege if elected as Ghana’s next President.

Addressing a crowd of chiefs, traditional leaders, and residents during his tour of the Greater Accra Region, Bawumia outlined his plan to combat the recurring damage from tidal waves affecting Sege and its neighboring areas.

He stressed that these infrastructure projects are crucial not only for mitigating environmental damage but also for boosting the local economy.

Bawumia emphasized Sege’s vital role as a fishing hub and argued that investing in a mini harbour will significantly enhance the fishing industry.

This infrastructure development aims to improve trade and market access for local fishermen and traders, supporting the community’s economic growth and stability.

“We need a mini-harbour. So we are going to work on bringing a mini harbour to Sege here for you and that is a very important thing. And then, of course, very important, we need to do the sea defence for this area.

“So I have a lot to do for you. If I come back in four years, I will have to give an account of what I have done with the sea defence.”

  • I’ll sanitize small-scale mining to tackle galamsey – Bawumia

I’ll sanitize small-scale mining to tackle galamsey – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has presented his plan for tackling illegal mining, focusing on a preventive approach.

His strategy aims to reform the small-scale mining sector by enhancing the role of the Geological Survey Authority in mineral prospecting and creating a shared resource pool of equipment for sustainable mining practices.

Addressing concerns about illegal mining, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey,’ during a visit to Kpone Katamanso, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the need for proactive measures.

He stressed that responsible and sustainable mining can only be achieved through early intervention and thorough preparation.

“So one needs to look at the whole regime of small-scale mining and sanitise that regime, regularise the regime. Make sure that the Geological Survey Authority of Ghana does the mapping for where all the gold reserves are.

“At the moment people are just doing trial and error, destroying our environment. There is no data backing where they go. They just go and dig, they don’t find, they go to the next place and start digging. they don’t find, they go to the next place.

“But I want us to set up community mining schemes with certainty from the geological survey department that here you have gold. In that case, we can make sure that those who are mining there are regularised. We bring in these gold catcher machines that don’t use mercury and make sure they are not in water bodies.

“So we direct them and license them into areas so that they do responsible mining and environmentally sustainable mining.

“That is the way you stop this. But if you don’t regulate them then they will hide to do it at night and when they feel people are not watching them, that’s where they will go.

“They will get into the water bodies. But we need to regulate them and we need to also enforce the laws that are already existent,” he stated.

  • NDC’s protest was a political stunt – NPP

NDC’s protest was a political stunt – NPP

A senior aide to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, Anthony Karbo, has characterized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) “Enough is Enough” protest over the voter register as merely a “keep fit” exercise.

Karbo remarked that the NDC is aware that the Electoral Commission (EC) has internal systems in place to address any discrepancies in the voter register.

During a campaign stop in Kpone Katamanso on Tuesday, he emphasized that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is focused on delivering its campaign message to the public, rather than being sidetracked by the NDC’s demonstrations.

“We’ve been through that path before it didn’t work for us so why do we go back to it? A forensic audit will always do something monumental. There are no two ways about a forensic audit. We are sitting here the American voters register for elections in November is not a perfect register.

“That which was used in London is not a perfect register. Any forensic audit conducted anywhere in the world will reveal some discrepancies but whether those are significant to change the outcome of an election is left to be known. We don’t need any forensic audit.”

“…Many years back when we were asking, they gave us these responses. Many years on, they are now asking what we were asking in the past and they are getting the same responses. Why should we support that?

“… Well, I think it’s an exercise. It’s an exercise. You know, sometimes in this, our politics, there’s a lot of keep fit exercises. People must get out and show force. I mean, those are all the antics leading to an election and I don’t think that is a very serious enough demonstration,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI), which includes prominent Civil Society Organisations such as the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to commit to an independent audit of the final voters’ register once it is completed.

This appeal comes in response to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s concerns about discrepancies in the voter register.

In a statement released on Monday, the CFI emphasized that resolving the dispute between the NDC and the EC requires not confrontation, but rather honest and constructive dialogue among all parties involved.

“We propose that the Electoral Commission commit to an independent audit of the final voters’ register once it is completed and in good time. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize the national interest and to work towards peaceful and credible elections in the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.”

The CFI underscored its dedication to ensuring peaceful and credible elections, highlighting its commitment to supporting processes and outcomes that uphold democratic integrity.

Presidency survery projects 2024 presidential elections to end in a run-off – Report

A recent survey reported by the Office of the President suggests that a run-off in the upcoming general presidential elections could be inevitable.

Per the survey, 49% of the respondents indicated that they are aligned with the NPP and NDC political parties. 87% of respondents indicated their decision to vote in the 2024 general elections.

“Bono (13.7%), Oti (12.1%) and Greater Accra (10.4%) are the regions with the highest number of voters still waiting to make a decision on whether to participate in the 2024 general elections,” the survey recorded. Also, 77% of these respondents indicated that they are dissatisfied with politicians, hence their wavering decision to vote this year.

Around 60% of voters indicated that their choices were based on party manifestos, with a specific focus on the policies that affect their lives. Meanwhile, scandals and poor decisions by government officials were highlighted as critical reasons that could hinder re-election chances for incumbents.

Information privy to The Independent Ghana indicates that the study sought the views of registered Ghanaian voters regarding the following themes: Voting history over the past two election cycles, attachment to political parties, readiness to vote in future elections, readiness to vote if elections were held today and which party to vote for, appeal/attractiveness of the two main presidential candidates, voter choice between the two main presidential candidates and visibility of the two presidential candidates in constituencies.

The study is said to have employed a multi-stage sampling technique covering all of Ghana’s 276 constituencies. Initially, five Electoral Areas (EA) were selected on the basis of probability sampling from each constituency. Thereafter, three polling stations were randomly selected from each EA. Seven respondents who are registered voters were selected for the interview in each of the selected polling stations. The respondents in each polling station were selected based on key demographic variables such as gender, age, and profession to ensure appropriate representation by all spheres of interest in the constituency.

The survey was led by the Director of Research at the Presidency and a former lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department, Dr. Isaac Owusu, sources close to The Independent Ghana reveal.

    Run-off prediction

There have been several projections of a run-off in the next polls, and among those with such surmise is German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull.

In an interview with Accra-based JoyNews on Thursday, August 22, Ambassador Krull said he personally believes Ghana will “probably have a second round of elections.” This came as a surprise to him as Ghanaians do not seem to be preparing for such a scenario.

“I personally believe we will probably have a second round of elections which I’m surprised Ghanaians are not preparing for. I think there are good arguments to expect that there might be a second round,” Krull stated.

    The third force

With the approach of the 2024 general elections, calls for a robust third force to challenge the dominance of the NPP and NDC have grown louder.

A growing number of Ghanaians are increasingly disillusioned with the repetitive cycle of governance by these two parties, attributing their dissatisfaction to underwhelming economic progress, unfulfilled promises, rampant corruption, and the persistent mismanagement of state resources.

Some Ghanaians believe that former Trade Minister and leader of the Movement for Change, John Alan Kyerematen, and Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, leader of The New Force, who have filed their nomination forms to run as independent candidates could represent the third force that the country has been searching for.

There will be a run-off if no candidate secures over 50% plus 1 of the total votes cast in the first round of the 2024 presidential election.

  • Be measured in your language, 2024 election is just a competition – Bawumia tells Mahama

Be measured in your language, 2024 election is just a competition – Bawumia tells Mahama

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to adopt more respectful language in his public statements.

Addressing a campaign rally in Accra on September 16, Dr. Bawumia criticized Mahama for allegedly referring to clergy, civil society organizations (CSOs), and traditional leaders as “hypocrites” due to their perceived silence on national issues.

He expressed concern that such rhetoric diminishes the dignity associated with Mahama’s previous presidential role.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of respecting these groups, which he believes play a vital role in national unity and development.

He noted that Mahama’s recent comments, including insults directed at religious leaders and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), are inappropriate for someone who once held the highest office in the land.

“You all know I am competing with the former president to win this election. I think he has realised that he will lose the elections so he is always angry. I heard he insulted some pastors, chiefs, imam and CSOs saying they are hypocrites. He even insulted the ECG.”

“Today he said the NPP is a foolish government. Why would a former president say something like this? We must have some level of decency in the language we speak as politicians.”

2024 polls: Politics of ideas and not insults, be decent with your language – Bawumia to Mahama

NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken issue with former President John Mahama, criticizing his recent statements as inappropriate.

Dr. Bawumia was responding to remarks in which Mahama accused some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and religious leaders of hypocrisy for not criticizing the current NPP administration.

While campaigning in the Amasaman constituency on Monday, Dr. Bawumia stressed that such comments were unbecoming of a former president, calling for a more respectful tone in political discussions.

“You all know that the December polls are between myself and former President Mahama, but we all know, and he also knows, that he will fail, so he gets peeved at the least thing.

I have heard that today he insulted pastors, chiefs, imams, and CSOs, saying they are all hypocrites. Have you heard this before?”

“Is that how a former president should speak?… Recently too, he insulted the EC and said that the NPP government is foolish. Have you heard this before?

“Is that how a former president should speak? We must have some standards of decency in the language we speak as politicians. This election is about ideas, not insults,” he stated.
