Bawumia’s aides do not trust his abilities – Ofosu Ampofo

The former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has highlighted a strategic move by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s key appointees as an indicator of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) uncertainty about their prospects in the 2024 General Elections.

Addressing supporters at the campaign launch for NDC Parliamentary Candidate Bismark Tetteh Nyarko in Upper Manya Krobo, Eastern Region, Ofosu Ampofo pointed out that Dr. Bawumia’s sister, his economic affairs advisor, and his spokesperson, Dr. Gideon Boako, are all running for parliamentary seats.

He suggested that this move reflects the NPP’s growing concern over their electoral chances.

“How do people who are walking with the Vice President and working in his office, all of a sudden, change their minds and contest as MPs?” Ofosu Ampofo questioned. “If you truly believe your presidential candidate is going to win the election, why abandon your special position to seek a parliamentary seat? This is a clear indication that even those closest to Dr. Bawumia do not have confidence in his chances of becoming President.”

Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claimed that the actions of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggest an acknowledgment of the NDC’s expected victory in the upcoming elections.

Speaking at the campaign launch for Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Upper Manya Krobo, Ofosu Ampofo stated, “The NPP itself knows that John Dramani Mahama will win the next elections, so they are looking for positions where they can remain relevant in opposition.”

Dr. Ofosu Ampofo also expressed concerns over the integrity of the current voter register, calling for an independent forensic audit to address what he described as a “tainted” document. He mentioned that the NDC has issued a statement calling for a nationwide demonstration, pointing out that the Electoral Commission (EC) announced the 2020 presidential results five times, which he said raises questions about the voter register’s credibility.

“The NDC has issued a statement about a nationwide demonstration because, for the first time in our country’s history, the Electoral Commission declared presidential results five times. They have admitted there are challenges with the voter register, and we demand an independent audit,” he said.

During the event, he urged constituents to vote overwhelmingly for both John Dramani Mahama and Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, highlighting the need for a strong parliamentary majority.

He added that the integrity of the electoral process rests on the voter register, stating, “For the first time since 1992, the Electoral Commission has admitted that there are problems with wrongful transfers. We will demonstrate and call on the international community and civil society to ensure our voter register is credible and fit for purpose.”

Eastern Region NDC Chairman, Mark Oliver Kevor, who officially launched the campaign, echoed the call for voters to support both Nyarko and Mahama to ensure cohesive development in the constituency.

As part of his commitment to the community, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko donated a brand-new canoe to the Akateng fishing community, signaling his dedication to improving the livelihoods of his constituents.

Why are Bawumia’s staff abandoning him to become MPs? – Ofosu Ampofo quizzes

Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has raised questions about the motivations of key staff members of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who are contesting parliamentary seats ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to Dr. Ofosu Ampofo, this move signals a lack of confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s presidential bid and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances of retaining power.

Speaking at the campaign launch of Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Upper Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo pointed out that notable figures close to the Vice President—including his sister, his economic affairs advisor, and his spokesperson, Dr. Gideon Boako—are vying for seats in Parliament. He argued that this decision reflects the NPP’s concerns about the upcoming elections.

“How do people who are walking with the Vice President and working in his office, all of a sudden, change their minds and contest as MPs?” Ofosu Ampofo questioned.

He suggested that these actions indicate an internal recognition of the NPP’s uncertain electoral prospects. “If you truly believe your presidential candidate is going to win the election, why abandon your special position to seek a parliamentary seat? This is a clear indication that even those closest to Dr. Bawumia do not have confidence in his chances of becoming President.”

The former NDC Chairman further claimed that the NPP’s strategy of securing parliamentary positions is part of a broader attempt to maintain influence in the event they are voted into opposition. He asserted that the NPP is aware of the likelihood of an NDC victory in 2024, under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama.

“The NPP itself knows that John Dramani Mahama will win the next elections, so they are looking for positions where they can remain relevant in opposition,” he concluded.

No Mahama, no presidential debate – Miracles Aboagye

Spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 presidential campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has announced that the Vice President will only participate in the upcoming presidential debate organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) if his main rival, former President John Dramani Mahama, is also present.

The IEA has scheduled two presidential debates ahead of the 2024 general elections, set for October 22 and November 19.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr Aboagye emphasized that while Dr. Bawumia is ready to engage in debates on national issues, he believes Mahama’s participation is essential for a comprehensive discussion.

“Dr. Bawumia is eager to participate, but there is no debate if Mahama is absent. The December polls will be a contest between Dr. Bawumia and Mahama, and both must engage to provide voters with a balanced discourse,” Aboagye stated.

The IEA outlined its debate schedule in a statement, detailing two presidential debates, one vice-presidential debate, and five evening encounters with the candidates ahead of the December 7 elections.

The vice-presidential debate is slated for November 5, while the evening encounters will kick off on Wednesday, September 18, with the last one scheduled for October 15.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, have expressed a preference to focus their campaign efforts on engaging with the electorate.

The NDC has argued that its resources are better spent promoting its policies to voters rather than participating in debates with the ruling party’s candidate, who, they claim, has failed to deliver on economic promises.

As the date for the first debate approaches, the participation of key contenders remains uncertain, with Dr. Bawumia’s involvement hinging on Mahama’s presence. The outcome of these deliberations will determine the structure of the debates as Ghana heads towards a critical election.

Bawumia is a man of impeccable integrity; Ghana will be better under him – Gideon Boako

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Gideon Boako, has passionately defended the vice president’s integrity and leadership credentials, affirming that Ghana will thrive under his presidency.

Speaking at a mini rally following a visit by the New Patriotic Party’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Boako stressed Dr. Bawumia’s consistent dedication to national development and his strong moral standing throughout his career in public service.

“As a Vice President, you all know how well Dr. Bawumia has distinguished himself. Many people believe he is the best Vice President Ghana has ever had. I am 100% in support of this claim,” Boako stated.

He went on to describe Dr. Bawumia as “a man of impeccable integrity” who is hardworking and genuinely cares about the welfare of Ghanaians.

Dr Boako highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s numerous accomplishments, particularly in the areas of economic transformation and digitisation, which he credited for modernising Ghana’s economy and improving its global competitiveness.

According to Dr Boako, these achievements underscore the vice president’s commitment to uplifting the country and improving the lives of its citizens.

“If you vote for him, Ghana can only be better under his presidency, and Tano North Constituency will be the ultimate beneficiary,” Boako assured the audience, adding that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership would bring about continued progress for the country.

In addition to praising Bawumia’s achievements, Boako addressed criticism that has been aimed at the vice president. He dismissed such critiques as politically motivated, asserting that detractors often overlook Dr. Bawumia’s contributions to financial inclusion and governance reforms.

  • Haruna Iddrisu promises to ask Bawumia 200 questions before Dec. 7 polls

Haruna Iddrisu promises to ask Bawumia 200 questions before Dec. 7 polls

Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has vowed to hold Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accountable by posing 200 critical questions to him before the December 7 polls.

This challenge is in response to the 170 questions Bawumia famously directed at the late former Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, in September 2016.

During the recent campaign and manifesto launch of the Ketu North Constituency in Dzodze on September 1, Iddrisu announced his intention to begin the questioning process, with 20 questions being posed at each campaign event where he is scheduled to speak.

“I will start asking Bawumia 200 questions, beginning with 20 today, and continue with 20 at every campaign platform I speak at,” Iddrisu declared.

The former Minority Leader questioned whether the promises and statements Bawumia made during the 2016 campaign were made on his own behalf, on behalf of the NPP, or another entity.

“The promises you made in 2016, including the 170 questions you asked the late Vice President—were they made on your behalf, on behalf of the NPP, or who?” Iddrisu asked.

He further accused Bawumia of attempting to distance himself from the economic challenges and mismanagement under the NPP government while simultaneously seeking the mandate to become president.

“Today, he is trying to run away from his responsibilities, asking us to detach him from the mess of the NPP. But we will not detach him—today, tomorrow, or ever. We will vote them out to bring President Mahama back,” he asserted.

Iddrisu also contrasted former President John Mahama’s promise to “reset Ghana” with Bawumia’s recent rhetoric about “upgrading” the nation, questioning the logic of upgrading amid widespread hardship and corruption.

“When President Mahama says he will reset Ghana, it simply means he is coming to correct the mess of the NPP—the mess in economic management, governance, corruption, and lack of accountability. He is coming to reset and make our public institutions more accountable to the taxpayers of Ghana,” Mr Iddrisu stated.

During his speech, Iddrisu commended Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, the current MP for Ketu North, for his contributions to the constituency. He urged constituents to support Eric Edem Agbana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s parliamentary candidate for Ketu North, describing him as the future of both the constituency and the party.

Iddrisu also promised that an NDC government would prioritize the construction of an ultramodern domestic market in Dzodze with funding from the Ghana Exim Bank, benefiting the people of Ketu North and the Republic of Togo. Additionally, he assured the gathering that the road from Aflao to Ho via Dzodze would be upgraded to a first-class standard as a reward for the constituency’s unwavering loyalty to the NDC.

The campaign launch was attended by several high-profile guests, including Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu; Bernard Ahiafor, MP for Akatsi South; John Dumelo, the parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon; Shamima Muslim, a broadcaster; Obuobia Darko-Opoku, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Weija Gbawe; the Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mawutor Agbavitor; and other party leaders from the national, regional, and constituency levels. Chiefs, queen mothers, elders, party supporters, and other notable individuals from the Ketu North Constituency also graced the event.

  • Special Prosecutor petitioned to probe Bawumia over PDS scandal

Special Prosecutor petitioned to probe Bawumia over PDS scandal

A group of concerned Ghanaian citizens has formally petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s alleged involvement in the controversial Power Distribution Services (PDS) scandal.

The petitioners, who are committed to combating corruption in Ghana, have requested a thorough probe into Dr. Bawumia’s role in what has become one of the country’s most significant corruption controversies in recent years.

The PDS scandal traces back to October 2019 when the Government of Ghana abruptly terminated a concession agreement with Power Distribution Services (PDS) Limited. This agreement had involved the takeover of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) assets for electricity distribution across southern Ghana.

The termination followed a forensic audit by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which revealed serious breaches of contract and concerns over the integrity of the process.

In 2014, the Government of Ghana signed a Millennium Challenge Compact with the MCC, aiming to stimulate private-sector investment in the power distribution sector. Meralco, a company based in the Philippines, was selected as the concessionaire through an international tender process.

To meet Ghana’s local content laws, Power Distribution Services (PDS) Limited was established, with Meralco holding a 30% stake and various Ghanaian and Angolan entities holding the remaining shares.

As part of the agreement, PDS was required to meet 41 conditions precedent, five of which were critical for ensuring transparency and protecting Ghanaian taxpayers. Among these, Conditions Precedent 24 and 31 mandated that PDS provide payment securities in the form of a Demand Guarantee or a Letter of Credit issued by a qualified bank.

However, the audit revealed that PDS secured an insurance guarantee instead—allegedly facilitated by a meeting chaired by Vice President Bawumia.

The petitioners’ request to the Special Prosecutor highlights a key meeting, reportedly chaired by Vice President Dr. Bawumia, where the decision was made to accept a downgrade of the required bank guarantee to an insurance guarantee. This meeting was also attended by the Chief of Staff, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Energy. The petition alleges that this decision led to the eventual transfer of ECG’s assets to PDS under questionable circumstances.

The insurance guarantee in question was purportedly issued by Al Koot Insurance and Reinsurance, a Qatari firm. However, subsequent investigations revealed that the guarantee was fraudulent, with the signatory, Yahaya Al Nouri, lacking the authority to bind the company to the deal. Despite this, the transfer of ECG’s assets proceeded, violating the agreement’s terms and international best practices.

The petition further outlines the financial losses Ghana suffered due to the botched PDS deal. The audit report revealed that PDS’s local shareholders spent approximately $12.25 million to procure the fraudulent insurance guarantee, with $4.25 million allegedly taken from ECG’s operating accounts after the illegal takeover of its assets.

The termination of the PDS agreement also resulted in Ghana losing $190 million in funding from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which was intended for critical infrastructure and financial recovery in the energy sector.

In their petition, the citizens call on the Special Prosecutor to investigate Dr. Bawumia’s involvement in the decision to downgrade the payment security requirements, which they argue directly led to the fraudulent acquisition of ECG’s assets by PDS.

They also demand an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the entire PDS deal, including the misuse of $4.25 million from ECG’s accounts and the overall cost to Ghanaian taxpayers.

The petitioners argue that under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the Office of Special Prosecutor Act, they have the right to request such an investigation. They emphasize the importance of holding those responsible accountable to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“I can say in all good conscience that I have not betrayed the mandate the good people of Ghana conferred on me on two successive occasions,” Akufo-Addo stated confidently.

He emphasized that the accomplishments of his government across various sectors of the economy are clear evidence of its effectiveness and dedication to improving the lives of Ghanaians.

Highlighting the importance of continuity in governance, the President expressed his belief that the foundation laid by his administration is solid and will benefit the country in the years to come.

Seth Terkper punches holes in Bawumia “Flat tax rate” scheme

Former Minister for Finance, Seth Terkper, has downplayed the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposed implementation of Flat tax rate scheme.

During the launch of the NPP’s manifesto in Takoradi, Bawumia pledged to introduce a flat-rate tax system in Ghana when he assumes presidency.

Bawumia outlined that this initiative would lower government spending by 3% of GDP, simplify tax management, and improve taxpayers’ understanding of their tax duties.

[We will] support businesses to drive and accelerate job creation by cutting 3% of GDP from government expenditure (~GH₵30 billion), and redirecting it towards private sector provision of public infrastructure and services. Using our tried and tested gold purchase programme to stabilise the currency, give businesses and industries predictability in planning, and ensure stability in input prices.

“Introduce a flat rate tax system in Ghana, like Estonia. This will simplify the tax administration by giving taxpayers visibility into their tax obligations and therefore easier to file and pay their taxes

“Complement the Flat Tax regime by using a Tax Amnesty Programme to enable industries to finance their expansion, recruit more employees, and energise economic activity.”

But taking to the X platform, Mr Terkper indicated that Bawumia’s efforts will disrupt the existing tax system and lead to a significant loss in government revenue

He added that the actual rate of the proposal could burden low-and middle-income earners.

According to him, Bawumia’s proposal will create a disincentive for investors, interfere with economic policies and negatively impact local industries.

“A] It’s been a while; we are back. This series reviews the proposal to replace the “Progressive” Personal Income Tax [PIT] regime with a “Flat” rate. It may destroy the fair tax system & result in significant loss of revenues. Follow us with the PowerPoint images that follow. It will increase the tax burden for low-and middle-income earners; reduces it for the wealthy and potentially leads to revenue shortfalls.

“The actual rate of the proposal is important since it could worsen the plight of low-income earners. Additionally, the flat tax could undermine targeted economic policies, harm local industries and discourage investment. While it is relatively simple, the flat tax fails to ensure equity or fairness. In the upcoming series, we will compare the (i) current progressive regime; (n) with the flat rate proposal,” he wrote.

Free SHS a trump card for Bawumia?

Ghanaian electorates will head to the polls to elect the next leader who will run the affairs of the country for the next four years, as stipulated by the 1992 constitution, in less than 100 days.

As the countdown to the elections continues, political parties are intensifying their campaigns to sway undecided voters and solidify their base.

In their campaign efforts, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been particularly focused on promoting their achievements and future plans, with a strong emphasis on their educational policies.

Among the key elements of their campaign is the promise of continuing and expanding the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, a cornerstone of the party’s educational reform agenda.

With this in mind The Independent Ghana interacted with some citizens regarding their voting choices come December 7 2024.

It appears the Free SHS has become a trump card for Dr Bawumia and the NPP to win the 2024 presidential seat.

Ghanaian truck driver Asmanu Yaya expressed that he has both enjoyed and continues to benefit from the Free SHS policy as his four children are beneficiaries.

Two of them, he said are done with school and the others are yet to complete. Not having a formal education, Yaya says he would let the opportunity slip by his children. He will vote for a leader who has helped him lift the financial burden to see his children through school.

“I’ve personally benefited from these policies. I have four children—two have finished school, and two are still attending. Without Free SHS, I might not have been able to afford their education. That’s why I’m voting for the NPP and Dr. Bawumia this year,” Mr Yaya indicated

Food vendor at the Achimota station, Madam Asmawu said she has plans to vote again and for the the NPP because Free SHS has made it possible for families, regardless of their financial status, to send their children to school.

“Free SHS has allowed both rich and poor families to send their children to school, which is a huge benefit. Despite the tough economy, this policy has made a real difference. So I have a reason to vote for them again,” Madam Asmawu stated.

Another citizen by name Richard Osei, expressed his gratitude for the introduction of the Free SHS, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) schools. He noted that these initiatives have improved access to education and enhanced the quality of education.

The Free Senior High School (Free SHS) education policy in Ghana is a government initiative introduced in the 2017 September Presidential administration of Nana Akufo-Addo.

The policy’s origination began as part of the President’s presidential campaign during Ghana’s 2016 election period, and has become an essential part of Ghana’s educational system.

And now, despite the hardship Ghanaians are facing in the country under the NPP, several Ghanaians seem to have no choice than to give the NPP another 4 years.

  • Bawumia’s gold-for-oil policy keeping dollar below GHC 20 – COPEC reveals

Bawumia’s gold-for-oil policy keeping dollar below GHC 20 – COPEC reveals

The seeming stability of the cedi against the dollar is due to the government’s Gold for Oil (G4O) policy, according to Paul Eric Ofori, the Head of Research at the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

Speaking on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, Ofori explained that without this policy, the cedi could have reached between 20 and 25 cedis to a dollar.

The G4O policy, introduced in 2022, allows Ghana to pay for imported oil using gold instead of foreign currency.

This strategy was aimed at stabilising fuel prices and reducing the strain on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have said it here: yes, it’s done two things for Ghana—one, some form of stability to the cedi because I have said on this platform that if not for that policy, the cedi should be hovering around 20-25 cedis to a dollar,” Ofori stated.

He added that the policy has also reduced the cost of premiums associated with free on board (FOB) pricing, marking it as a significant benefit for the economy.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, believed to be the architect of the G4O policy, expressed his satisfaction with its impact during a media engagement on August 25, 2024.

However, he voiced regret over the delayed implementation of the policy.

“I wish, for example, we had started the gold purchase much earlier. If we had started it earlier during our first term, for example, the buffer in terms of gold would have been much bigger.

A few years ago, we had 8.7 tonnes of gold, and so far, they have bought about 72 tonnes or so.

It is something that I wish for when I sit back and look. I wish we had been able to buy a bit more and start Gold for Oil and reserve much earlier,” Bawumia revealed.

“Journalists were paid GHS2k and GHS5k” – NPP clarifies

The Director of Communication for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has addressed the payments made to journalists who attended the #BawumiaHostsTheMedia event on August 25, 2024.

He confirmed that journalists were given amounts between GH¢2,000 and GH¢5,000 to support their participation and ensure their comfort during the event.

In a discussion with Fact-Check Ghana, Aboagye refuted rumors circulating on social media that suggested payments ranging from GH¢10,000 to GH¢20,000 were made to journalists and media houses.

He emphasized that the actual payments were significantly lower and were intended solely to facilitate the event’s coverage.

“I haven’t given any GH¢20,000 or GH¢10,000 to any media house. The highest amount of money any media person received was between GH¢ 2,000 and GH¢ 5,000. They are all not the same, some were even bloggers,” he said.

Mr Aboagye explained that journalists from outside Accra received funds to cover transportation and accommodation expenses, countering allegations of bribery.

“Take someone who came from Kumasi or Tamale, for instance, if you give them GH¢5,000 or GH¢7,000 then you [must] add their accommodation and transport to ensure you have covered them,” he added.

Mr Aboagye’s comments address recent social media speculations following the NPP flagbearer’s media interaction.

Meanwhile, Fact-Check Ghana has received confirmations from some journalists that they were paid substantial amounts between GH¢10,000 and GH¢20,000 after the event.

  • You are afraid of debating me – Bawumia tells Mahama

You are afraid of debating me – Bawumia tells Mahama

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused former President John Mahama of deliberately avoiding a presidential debate ahead of the December elections, suggesting that Mr. Mahama fears having his record scrutinized in a public forum.

Dr. Bawumia, who is set to face Mahama as one of the main contenders in the upcoming elections, issued an open challenge for a debate, which the former President has so far declined.

Addressing a gathering of NPP supporters in Dansoman, Accra, on Monday evening [August 26], Dr. Bawumia reiterated his belief that Mahama’s reluctance to participate in a debate stems from an awareness of his shortcomings during his tenure as President.

“The former President knows he cannot compete because, in every sector of the economy, the records show that we have performed far better than him,” Dr. Bawumia asserted, energizing the crowd.

“That’s why I challenged him. If he believes he performed better in any sector, he should come for an open debate. But he is afraid, so he is running away from it.”

Dr. Bawumia further claimed that Mahama’s refusal to engage in a debate is a tactic to avoid exposing his “bad record” to the electorate.

“He won’t come for the debate because he knows his bad record will be exposed. If he comes for the debate, I will show him something,” he added, prompting cheers from his supporters.

The Vice President did not hold back in criticizing Mahama’s presidency, reminding the audience of key issues during his time in office.

He highlighted the four years of severe power outages, known locally as “dumsor,” which plagued the nation under Mahama’s leadership.

He also criticized Mahama for his administration’s failure to provide essential resources like chalk to schools, his opposition to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, and his decision to cancel teacher and nursing trainee allowances.

“We have not forgotten all these bad records. We are moving forward. We are making progress with digitalisation. As President, he couldn’t provide chalk to schools, but we have provided laptops to senior high students,” Dr. Bawumia noted. “This is the progress the country has made, and we want to move forward and make it even better.”

Bawumia backs Okudzeto’s bill banning govt officials from buying state assets

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown his support behind the introduction of a law to prevent politicians and politically exposed persons from purchasing state assets.

He made his position on this issue known during a media engagement on Sunday, August 25.

“I think it is something we should all support. Any bill that stops state officials from buying assets,” he said after being asked by GHOne journalist, Natalie Fort whether he would assent to such a bill should he become president.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is leading the charge for such a bill.

The need for a private member’s bill in Parliament in a bid to prevent politicians and politically exposed persons from purchasing state assets arose over the circumstances surrounding the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s intended sale of its 60% per cent stake in six hotels to Rock City Hotels Limited owned by a Member of Parliament and Minister of State, Bryan Acheampong.

Rock City rescinded its proposal following intense public backlash.

Bawumia owes me $7 million – Sam George claims

Ningo-Prampram legislator, Sam Nartey George, has said that the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia owes him a tune of $7 million.

He noted that this debt has accrued over the NPP’s inability to see through its promise of providing each constituency one million dollars.

In an interview on GHOne, Mr Sam George revealed that “I have not received a pesewa. I am owed $7 million.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo during his campaign in the 2016 general elections, promised Ghanaians that if voted into power, he would roll out a programme that would give every constituency one million dollars to facilitate the rapid development of the constituencies.

Then, on the 30th of August, 2016, the then Vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party announced a one million dollar for each constituency policy aimed at alleviating poverty in the country. He said that the policy was under the infrastructure for poverty eradication at a total cost of $1.6 billion. With this amount, the NPP government intended to invest in pro-poor policy in villages across the country.

The NPP government has failed to fulfil its promise of providing each constituency with a million dollars.

We are moving forward and not backwards, Bawumia is the future – Kow Essuman

Legal Counsel to President Akufo-Addo, Kow Essuman, has boldly asserted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the future of Ghana’s leadership.

He contrasted the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with former President John Dramani Mahama, leading the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) whom he described as a figure of the past.

His comments come amid rising political tensions as Ghana prepares for the 2024 general elections.

“Bawumia represents the future. His main opponent represents the past. We are not talking about immediate past, oh. This is like almost a decade ago past. Two governments ago past,” Essuman posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, August 26.

“All I know is that we live our lives going forward, not going backwards,” he added.

Essuman pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s significant role in pushing forward key initiatives, particularly in the areas of digital transformation and economic management.

According to him, Bawumia’s innovative approach and forward-thinking policies position him as the leader who can address modern Ghana’s challenges and lead the country toward sustainable growth.

In contrast, Essuman criticized former President Mahama’s tenure, highlighting issues such as economic mismanagement, the power crisis, rising public debt, and perceived corruption as indicators of his leadership failures. He stressed that a return to Mahama’s leadership would represent a step backward for the country.

Why Bawumia can’t scrap “nuisance” taxes now

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has explained why he plans to eliminate “nuisance taxes” only if elected president, rather than during his current vice presidential term.

In a recent media engagement, he clarified that attempting to remove these taxes while serving as vice president would be ineffective, as he lacks the authority to implement such changes.

He added that presenting and pursuing every idea now would deplete his agenda for his potential presidency.

“I must have a manifesto, otherwise if I do everything now if I could what would I do when I come into office. How can you do everything now. Even Mahama who was president, I am only vice president but he was president why he didn’t he do everything then. Why is he coming back? He had full authority, I don’t have full authority.

“The budget that has gone to parliament which has been passed is not my budget. The goes in the name of the president and not the vice president but when you think what new you need to do you go with new ideas and I have come with new ideas which I want to do when we come into office. Everyone who is running for office whether you’re Kamala Harris or Bawumia, you still have to think about what you want to do when you get into office and this is why I am presenting my new ideas,”he added.

Speaking at the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Bawumia detailed his administration’s vision for sweeping tax reforms designed to alleviate the financial burden on Ghanaians.

This plan includes offering a tax amnesty for overdue taxes and providing waivers on interest and penalties for unfiled returns.

Additionally, he outlined strategies to establish Ghana as a global leader in the digital space.

His approach involves implementing forward-thinking policies, offering competitive incentives, and making strategic investments to elevate the nation into a premier digital economy.

“We will fast-track Ghana’s transformation into Africa’s digital hub through strategic policies, incentives, and investments. This includes investing in local talent and tech start-ups while abolishing the E-Levy.

“We’ll implement broad tax reforms, offering a one-time tax amnesty to all Ghanaians and corporate entities, wiping the slate clean from previous tax obligations. This will give everyone a fresh start in their tax journey.

“We will reform the Value Added Tax system by consolidating all levies into a single line item, which will be treated as part of input and output VAT, eliminating the cascading effect of the current regime.

“We’ll also reduce Withholding Tax for small-scale gold exports to 1% to curb smuggling, and abolish the Betting Tax,” Dr. Bawumia promised.

Bawumia has changed the politics of Ghana and Africa – Paul Adom-Otchere

Journalist with Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere, has lauded the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for introducing what he believes is a new approach to political campaigning in Ghana and Africa.

He noted that, unlike previous candidates, Mr Bawumia’s campaign has been focused on articulating policy initiatives and achievements, much like political campaigns in advanced democracies such as the UK.

Mr Adom-Otchere made this remark deemed as biased by some Ghanaians during a media engagement by Dr Bawumia on Sunday, August 26, 2024.

“I have never seen a presidential candidate, whether in opposition or in government focusing his campaign to the people about policy initiatives and policies that have been achieved.”

“They were always articulating policies. What could be done? You will find here in all of those historical elections that we were not doing that until Mahamudu Bawumia arrived on the scene. The youth manifesto; What Bawumia and Mahama are promising Ghanaian youth

Ghana is on the brink of a pivotal moment with the upcoming elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

On this day, citizens will head to the polls to choose both their President and Members of Parliament.

The Ghanaian constitution guarantees every citizen aged eighteen and above the right to vote, ensuring their participation in shaping the country’s leadership.

Anticipation is high as the election features a contest between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC will face Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP. Both candidates have outlined detailed plans, particularly focusing on the youth.

John Dramani Mahama’s Vision for Youth Empowerment:

In launching the NDC’s 2024 Youth Manifesto, Mahama highlighted his commitment to tackling youth unemployment through a variety of job creation strategies.

His proposals include supporting digital startups, training one million young Ghanaians in coding, and investing $3 billion in technology and fintech.

Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy, slated for implementation in 2025, aims to enhance job markets and promote entrepreneurship.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Strategy for Youth Employment:

Dr. Bawumia, the NPP candidate, has outlined his approach to improving job creation through better digital infrastructure and credit access.

His administration’s achievements, such as the national address system and mobile money interoperability, are designed to support private sector growth.

Bawumia’s plans include increasing senior high school enrollment, enhancing educational performance, and implementing health initiatives like the national electronic pharmacy platform and youth resource centers.

Let’s be truthful, Ghana doesn’t need a reset – Bawumia to Mahama

The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has hit back at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, who urged voters to support him in “resetting” Ghana.

At the NDC’s Manifesto launch, Mahama emphasized the urgency for voters to back him, claiming that the nation is “bleeding” and its “soul is crying for change.”

In response, during a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, Dr. Bawumia argued that what Ghana truly needs is an upgrade, not a reset.

He outlined 14 key commitments he plans to fulfill if elected in the 2024 elections, including job creation and transforming Ghana into a world-class digital economy.

“I represent the future, Ghana needs an upgrade, not a reset. I have also outlined my 14 key commitments to the Ghanaian people. These are to sustain and expand Ghana’s rebounding economy, create new jobs, implement wide-ranging tax reforms, and build Ghana into a world-class digital economy.

“Reduce the cost of living, expand public infrastructure, provide better healthcare for all, Implement Affirmative Action for girls and women, provide good governance, care for the elderly, and expand educational opportunities for all. Protect our borders while keeping our neighbourhood safe.”

Ghana will be upgraded, there is no need for a reset – Bawumia

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has responded to former President John Dramani Mahama’s recent call for a “reset” of Ghana, rejecting the idea and instead advocating for an “upgrade” to move the country forward.

Speaking during a media interaction on Sunday, August 25, Dr. Bawumia challenged the narrative presented by his main political opponent, Mr. Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Mahama, during the NDC’s manifesto launch, had painted a grim picture of Ghana’s current situation, claiming that “Ghana is bleeding, and its soul is crying for change.” He called for a fresh start to address what he perceives as the nation’s pressing challenges.

In contrast, Dr. Bawumia offered a different vision for Ghana’s future, stating, “I represent the future. Ghana needs an upgrade, not a reset.”

He emphasized that while Mahama’s proposal seeks to overhaul the country’s governance, the real solution lies in advancing and improving upon existing systems.

Dr. Bawumia outlined 14 key commitments he plans to pursue if elected in the 2024 elections, which include measures designed to modernize Ghana’s economy and governance.

Among his priorities are creating more job opportunities, implementing comprehensive tax reforms, and transforming Ghana into a world-class digital economy.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia promised to address the high cost of living, expand public infrastructure, and enhance healthcare access.

His vision also includes support for affirmative action initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls, alongside plans to improve educational opportunities for all Ghanaians.

On the topic of national security, he vowed to ensure good governance, safeguard the country’s borders, and bolster safety within local neighborhoods.

As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia’s rejection of Mahama’s “reset” rhetoric highlights a clear ideological divide between the two leading candidates. Where Mahama sees the need for a complete overhaul, Bawumia is championing innovation, continuity, and transformation within the existing framework.

Both candidates are presenting their strategies to voters, but Dr. Bawumia remains adamant: Ghana needs to move forward with an upgrade, not revert to a reset.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, hosted a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2024, in Accra.

This event comes a week after the NPP launched its manifesto.

The media engagement allowed the presidential candidate to interact with the media and provide the public with a clearer understanding of his vision ahead of the December 7 presidential election.

Dr. Bawumia used the platform to discuss the NPP manifesto in greater detail.

NPP has no credibility – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah

A former Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has urged Ghanaians to desist from engaging in any action that would give the New Patriotic Party (NPP) another 4-year term to govern.

He noted that the many promises the NPP made via its present flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to develop the country have not been fulfilled.

Engaging the media ahead of the launch of the 2024 manifesto by the opposition party, he stressed that the ruling party had no credibility and advised its flagbearer, to rescind his decision to contest this year’s election.

Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are flocking to the University of Education, Winneba, where the party is set to unveil its manifesto for the 2024 elections.

The event, which takes place in Winneba, will draw the top leaders of the NDC as they present their strategic plan under the theme, “Change to Reset Ghana.”

NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has described this manifesto launch as a pivotal moment in the party’s efforts to “reset” the nation, marking the beginning of their journey to address the country’s challenges ahead of the upcoming elections.

He also stated, ahead of the launch, that “We face challenges that have held back for too long, but now, it’s time to build the Ghana we all want together. Join me from Winneba in the Central Region as I unveil a vision for our future that will bring justice, jobs, and prosperity to every corner of our beloved nation, Ghana.”

    Bawumia’s manifesto sparks public doubts

As the 2024 elections draw near, Ghanaians are increasingly becoming vocal about their concerns, particularly regarding the manifesto unveiled by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

When The Independent Ghana visited Madina Constituency in Greater Accra,  residents expressed deep scepticism about the promises made by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), with many citing economic hardships as the basis for their doubts.

Madam Comfort, a shoe seller at Madina Goil filling station, was unequivocal in her criticism. “All that he said are lies. Because even Akufo-Addo has disappointed us. He didn’t fulfil any of the promises he gave us; it is all lies,” she said.

Mr. Anokye, a fellow trader, dismissed Dr. Bawumia’s claim of being merely a “driver’s mate” in the administration, arguing that the Vice President is complicit in what he described as “wicked” policies.

“Every policy implemented under his watch is proof that none of the promises, such as scrapping the e-levy, are anything more than stillborn ideas,” he stated.

Commuter Mr. Meyers took a more measured stance but still questioned the leadership needed to guide the country. “I have no problem with Bawumia, but Ghana needs a strong leader who will be able to build us,” he remarked.

Wahab, a belt seller, shared his doubts, pointing to the rising cost of goods. “Under Mahama’s government, a belt at wholesale was 10 cedis. Now, under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, we buy at 20 and sell at 30,” he noted.

Aunty Grace, a self-proclaimed staunch NPP supporter, expressed her disillusionment with the government’s unfulfilled promises, vowing never to vote again. “As I have always said, never would I vote in any election in Ghana again. The deception has become too much, too much deception. Now we have ‘shine-our eyes,’” she declared.

However, Lady Gagabelieves Dr Bawumia is capable of fulfilling all his campaign promises.

She empathises with the ‘disappointed’ in the Akufo-Addo -Bawumia led, attributing the government’s failure to his flagship programme i.e the Free SHS policy

Dr. Bawumia’s manifesto includes promises to abolish the e-levy, remove VAT on electricity if still on the books, scrap the emissions tax and betting tax, and fully automate Tema Port.

He also pledged to align port duties at Tema with those at Lome Port, introduce flat-rate duties for spare parts importers, and reduce the cost of data by working with industry players to establish clear policy guidelines.

As the election season progresses, whether these promises will sway voters or if the scepticism heard in places like Madina will dominate the public’s perception remains to be seen.

The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has highlighted his commitment to delivering new and innovative solutions for Ghana.

He positioned himself as a “brand new, tear-rubber president,” distinct from his opponent.

Speaking at a community event in the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia contrasted his vision with that of John Mahama, the NDC candidate, whom he labeled as a “second-hand, failed president.”

He argued that voting for him would mean embracing a fresh approach to governance with a strong focus on accountability.

“I am not yet a President so if you vote for me, you will get a brand-new tear rubber president but if you vote for John Dramani Mahama you get a second-hand failed president.

“Do you want a brand new or second-hand? If you want brand new then vote for Bawumia and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah,” he stated.

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has warned that the Achimota Forest Reserve in Accra is at risk of being lost to the state.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, August 19, 2024, Bentil urged immediate action to prevent this, stating that despite his ongoing efforts, more Ghanaians need to join the fight to save the forest.

“Achimota Forest is at risk of being stolen. I’ve fought to preserve it. It’s time to see others join to protect it. If we don’t, it will be gone soon!” he wrote.

Even though the IMANI vice president did not indicate the person(s) who were trying to steal the forest, he noted that the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, does not want the state to sell it.

“NB: Bawumia is in favour of saving it, not selling it!!! Let the others also declare their support for the forest remaining a forest.”

In a subsequent post, Bentil said that the Presidential Candidate for the 2024 election should state their stance on the sale of the Achimota Forest.

Akufo-Addo and I have solved Ghana’s foreign exchange problem – Bawumia

Flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that the current NPP administration has successfully tackled Ghana’s long-standing foreign exchange challenges.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s 2024 election manifesto in Takoradi, Dr Bawumia shared insights into how he and President Akufo-Addo navigated the issue.

“I approached President Akufo-Addo with a new idea to address the foreign exchange shortage. I suggested that we leverage our gold production to directly exchange for essential imports, beginning with petroleum products, which were crucial to stabilizing the economy. He approved the pilot, and the results have been promising,” Bawumia explained.

Bawumia credited two key policies for rescuing the economy during the recent crisis: the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Program (DGPP) and the Gold for Oil (G4O) initiative. He pointed out that this approach not only eased the pressure on the cedi but also provided stability for foreign investors repatriating profits without causing currency instability.

“The success of the pilot scheme has given us confidence that we’ve found a lasting solution to the foreign exchange problem, a challenge that has plagued previous governments and contributed to inflation and other economic woes,” Bawumia stated.

Looking ahead, Bawumia pledged that his government would fully institutionalize the “Gold-for-Forex” program, a strategy that he believes will provide the much-needed anchor for Ghana’s local currency. The DGPP has already resulted in $5 billion worth of gold purchases over the past few years, and with Ghana’s untapped gold reserves valued at around $10 trillion, Bawumia emphasized the program’s potential to meet all major foreign exchange demands.

“The gold purchase program ensures that for every dollar demand, there is an equal supply, stabilizing the economy. My government will ramp up efforts to use this approach to cover all forex needs,” Bawumia concluded.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh strongly endorsed Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing his untainted record on corruption. He pointed out that throughout Dr. Bawumia’s political career, he has never been implicated in any corrupt activities.

This clean track record, according to NAPO, is a significant strength that makes Dr. Bawumia a trustworthy leader for Ghana. He urged Ghanaians to remember this when making their decision in the upcoming 2024 elections.

    A Call to Action

NAPO rallied NPP members to work diligently towards securing victory in the December 7 elections. He stressed the importance of this victory in allowing the party to continue its ongoing developmental agenda.

“We have general election to win, and this general elections we will win. With God all things are possible. This is a call to duty. Today’s manifesto launch is the show of our contest of ideas and policies that are going to serve as guiding light for his excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia when by God’s grace he assumes office on January 7. He promises us that he needs no honey moon and from January 7, he is going to start working for the people of Ghana.

“The NPP which he leads has a record of delivery. In 2016 and 2020, the NPP delivered on its manifesto. I do recall Dr. Bawumia calling to account for what we were doing and what so far, we had done in education sector. That led some of us to think deep, Mr President your work has shown that you are a man who honours his word. Based on the work you have done; I am sure Ghanaians are going to give us the mandate to continue from where we are,” NAPO said.

He also reflected on the NPP’s achievements in previous elections, expressing confidence that the party’s record of delivery would earn them another mandate from Ghanaians.

    Praise for Akufo-Addo’s Educational Reforms

NAPO lauded President Akufo-Addo for his significant contributions to the education sector. He highlighted the introduction of Free SHS and free TVET, the provision of IT resources, and the overall enhancement of education infrastructure.

He also recounted the improvement in WASSCE results, crediting these successes to the president’s commitment to education despite initial skepticism from critics.

“2016 election was a contest of ideas. When you talk about Free SHS and free TVET, you didn’t stop there. From early childhood care and new nurseries, you developed, you made sure that in the area of IT, every school gets a school laboratory which is in progress.

“You made sure that every teacher gets a laptop for I.T, and it is in progress. You made sure that every child in secondary school gets a laptop and it is in progress. Mr President when you assumed office in 2017, 40,000 Ghanaian students had passed the WASSCE but could not get their results because they couldn’t pay their examination fees.

“Before you came to office, for every hundred Ghanaian student that qualified to go to SHS, 35 could not go because they couldn’t afford it. For the 65 that went to secondary school, by the time of WASSCE, another 30 had dropped out and that is why it was only 800 students in school when you came. Even not all that 800 would have qualified or to would be able to stay through three years. As we speak, every child that goes to secondary school leaves with the best result ever.

“Mr President, the profound thing you did in education is that when the naysayers said it was not possible, you made it possible, when the naysayers said you were diluting education, you were lowering standards, the first batch of free SHS students stayed home five months because of COVID, and when they came back to school, and they sat for the WASSCE, the best result Ghana has had, 68% had aggregate A1, 8 subjects, which was the whole of West Africa, they for the first time also passed all the four core subjects.”

    Acknowledgment of Energy Sector Achievements

Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted the progress made in the energy sector under President Akufo-Addo, recalling the persistent power cuts during John Mahama’s tenure.

He praised the government for maintaining stable electricity, even under challenging circumstances, and for reducing electricity costs. He commended the president for demonstrating both competence and exceptional leadership in this area.

    Commitment to Serve

NAPO expressed his unwavering dedication to serving Dr. Bawumia and working hard to ensure the NPP retains power.

“I am a strong believer in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. I have worked more closely with him than many more would ever know. I believe in his ability and his knowledge. Surely, he is the man of the moment.

“I, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, am committed to serving him loyally to ensure his vision is translated into a mission and an action purpose for myself. I know his vision is for a brighter, better business-friendly country called Ghana, and I pledge to even work harder to realise this vision,” NAPO said.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has showered praise on President Akufo-Addo for his remarkable achievements during his presidency, expressing confidence that history will remember his impact on millions of lives across Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the president’s administration’s notable strides in various areas, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, and digitalization.

Dr. Bawumia also recognized President Akufo-Addo’s dedication to social interventions aimed at alleviating poverty and reducing inequality.

  • Our manifesto displays our respect for Ghanaians, shows NPP’s credibility – Bawumia

Our manifesto displays our respect for Ghanaians, shows NPP’s credibility – Bawumia

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized that the NPP’s decision to present a detailed account of its achievements before launching its 2024 manifesto reflects the party’s respect for the people of Ghana and its commitment to transparency.

Speaking at the manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia underscored that the NPP has always upheld its obligations to Ghanaians, making accountability a core aspect of its governance.

He pointed out that by taking the time to reflect on the party’s track record, the NPP demonstrates its capability and readiness to deliver more in the future.

“Our tradition, the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, has not only been the vanguard of the rule of law and governance but also pacesetters and drivers of life-changing policies and interventions,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

The manifesto launch event was marked by various speakers who showcased the NPP’s accomplishments across multiple sectors, particularly those that stemmed from the party’s 2020 manifesto commitments.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted these achievements as a testament to the NPP’s proud legacy and potential to continue delivering impactful policies.

“Let me thank all the earlier presenters for highlighting the major achievements of our government under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo,” Dr. Bawumia said. “We have taken some time to highlight these achievements because our track record is a significant predictor of capability and the potential to do more.”

Dr. Bawumia added that the decision to account for these successes is rooted in the NPP’s belief in fulfilling its social contract with the people.

“We have catalogued them because, in the NPP, we view these as our obligation to the people from whom we draw our mandate. We have enumerated them because they communicate our ability to respond to the numerous needs of different sections of our society.”

He further stressed that the party’s track record serves as proof of its commitment to delivering on its promises. “We have listed them to show that we remain committed to fulfilling the social contract we have with the good people of Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia assured the public that, given the opportunity, the NPP will continue implementing progressive interventions that build on its current successes.

“Above all, this exercise confirms that hundreds of pledges have been made to the Ghanaian people, and broadly, they have been kept. More impactful and forward-looking interventions will be implemented to move Ghana to the next level of the development journey.”

He also paid tribute to President Akufo-Addo, acknowledging the far-reaching impact of policies such as Free SHS. “We promised change and we have made significant progress.

Mr. President, history will be kind to you, and you shall be remembered for the millions of lives you have touched. We are eternally grateful.”

Through this manifesto, Dr. Bawumia said, the NPP continues to prove its credibility and commitment to the people of Ghana, positioning itself as the party capable of delivering more transformative policies for the country’s future.

  • Bawumia reechoes friendly tax system for businesses, SMEs

Bawumia reechoes friendly tax system for businesses, SMEs

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his commitment to creating a business-friendly environment through a series of tax reforms outlined in the 2024 NPP Manifesto.

Speaking at the manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted policies aimed at supporting businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), while fostering economic growth.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized his administration’s intent to overhaul Ghana’s tax system, introducing a simplified flat tax regime designed to reduce the burden on individuals and businesses.

“To increase government tax revenue, we have to reform and refocus the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) towards broadening the tax base. Estimates suggest revenues amounting to 13% of GDP (or $24 billion in 2023) are not collected because people are outside the tax net,” he said.

He further noted the complexities of the current tax structure and how they hinder compliance.

“We want a tax regime that is easy to understand, easy to comply with, and easy to enforce, and that is not subject to so much discretion. Many individuals and businesses find our tax system cumbersome and confusing.”

Dr. Bawumia’s proposed flat tax system would apply to individuals and SMEs, which represent over 80% of businesses in Ghana, with exemptions in place to protect low-income earners.

“A flat tax of a percentage of income for individuals and SMEs will be introduced, allowing tax returns to be completed in minutes,” he stated. He also announced plans to simplify the corporate tax system and the Value Added Tax (VAT) regime, merging all levies into a single line-item levy to reduce the cascading effects currently experienced by businesses.

To launch the new tax regime on a clean slate, Dr. Bawumia committed to offering a tax amnesty, which would waive interest and penalties on unpaid taxes up to a specified year.

“My government will provide a tax amnesty—a complete exemption from the payment of taxes for a specified period and the waiving of interest and penalties—so that everyone will start afresh.”

As part of the broader tax reforms, Dr. Bawumia pledged to fully digitize tax administration.

“Everyone will be required to file a very simple tax return electronically through their mobile phone or computer. There will be no manual or paper filing of taxes,” he explained, adding that faceless audits would enhance transparency and accountability.

He also assured that GRA officials would no longer be required to physically visit businesses for tax assessments, as e-invoicing would be extended to all companies.

In addition, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his intention to scrap the e-levy, maintaining that this policy change would alleviate financial pressure on businesses and individuals, thereby promoting growth within the private sector.

Through these tax reforms, Dr. Bawumia aims to foster a more conducive business climate, especially for SMEs, while ensuring that the tax system is simpler, fairer, and more efficient for all.

  • Bawumia has never been accused, investigated for corruption in his public life – Napo jabs Mahama

Bawumia has never been accused, investigated for corruption in his public life – Napo jabs Mahama

The running mate to the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has lauded Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of being a man of integrity and dignity.

At the launch of the ruling party’s 2024 election manifesto, the former Energy Minister reiterated his remarks that suggest that the NPP flagbearer is incorruptible.

In what appears to be a jab at the flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh emphasised that Dr Bawumia has neither been accused nor investigated for corruption.

“I know that Dr Alhaji Bawumia. He is not corrupt and will not be corrupted. In his public life, Mr President, he has never been accused of [for] (sic) corruption and his public life, he has never been investigated for corruption,” he said while speaking to party faithful at Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Former President John Mahama since February 2020, has been investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecution for corruption in his role in the controversial Airbus scandal during his administration.

But Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng has revealed that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, played no role in the controversial Airbus scandal.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor confirmed this after revealing that the individual referred to as Government Official 1 by the UK court and Individual 1 by the US court in the Airbus scandal is former President John Mahama.

Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng made this known while briefing the media on the Office’s findings of the case after initiating investigations in February 2020.

Mahama has on several occasions refuted that he played a role in the Airbus scandal and further challenged the Akufo-Addo-led government to prosecute him should he be found guilty.

The airbus bribery scandal emerged after the previous Mahama government bought three Military Airplanes from Airbus.

Then Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu slammed the deals as both questionable and non-transparent, adding that the contract sums, over 70 million euros and over 100 million dollars, had been padded by the government.

The matter gained international recognition and England’s Crown Court in Southwark in its judgement highlighted that Airbus, through intermediaries, attempted to bribe officials linked to a high-ranking Ghanaian government figure between 2011 and 2015 to secure the sale of two C295 aircraft.

Initially, Airbus planned to pay a 5 million euro bribe disguised as a commission to an insider who had close ties to a powerful Ghanaian official overseeing the aircraft purchase deals.

The launch, scheduled was scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. Presently, bigwigs of the party are trooping in.

Bawumia is the man of the moment, give him a chance – Kufuor to Ghanaians

Former President and a bigwig in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Agyekum Kufuor, has entreated Ghanaians to vote for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

In a message broadcast during the launch of the 2024 NPP manifesto in Takoradi of the Western Region, the statesman described the flagbearer of the NPP as “the man of the moment”.

He noted that the entire world is embracing digitalisation, an agenda being spearheaded by the Vice President.

According to former President Kufuor, Dr Bawumia is the leader needed to help Ghana develop and emerge from its numerous challenges such as cedi depreciation, high inflation among others.

“Bawumia seems cut for the occasion. He has been exposed internationally. He is an international banker and he has studied politics. In fact, he was born into politics…..we are presenting a custom-made candidate to Ghana. A candidate that will digitalise the economy,” he added.

The former President could not be physically present at the launch of the NPP 2024 elections manifesto.

  • Ghana’s future is with Bawumia and not “recycled” Mahama – Atta Akyea

Ghana’s future is with Bawumia and not “recycled” Mahama – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has strongly asserted that Ghana’s future is securely tied to the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He dismissed former President John Dramani Mahama as a “recycled” leader, offering little new for Ghanaians.

Speaking ahead of the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Atta Akyea emphasized the impact the NPP has had on Ghana through transformative policies such as the Free SHS initiative.

He believes that under Dr. Bawumia, the party will continue to deliver solutions that drive the nation’s progress.

“After the manifesto launch, we should all see that the future of this country is not with the recycled Mahama but with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” Atta Akyea declared.

He credited the NPP with consistently introducing policies aimed at alleviating poverty, noting that their next manifesto would introduce even more comprehensive measures to help Ghana overcome its current economic struggles.

“Anything of consequence that will bankroll poverty always comes from the NPP. So you are going to see another level of serious issues and a blueprint that we will depend on so that we come out of the current economic difficulties,” he added.

Atta Akyea also took aim at John Mahama’s recent proposal to offer free tuition for level 100 students, criticizing it as shallow compared to the far-reaching impact of the NPP’s Free SHS policy. He argued that the NPP’s initiative is a long-term investment in Ghana’s development.

“…You don’t have any sense of Free SHS, it came from the NPP and that is a paradigm shift. It thrives to empower the nation for the next 20 years,” he explained.

In addition to highlighting the successes of the Free SHS policy, Atta Akyea hinted that the NPP manifesto would focus on digitalization as a crucial tool for transforming Ghana’s economy and addressing its challenges.

According to him, this approach would be a “game changer” for the country’s future.

  • Akufo-Addo is in charge of the economy, not Bawumia – Mike Oquaye Jnr tells critics

Akufo-Addo is in charge of the economy, not Bawumia – Mike Oquaye Jnr tells critics

The New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Dome Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has hinted that any blame for the current state of the economy should be placed at the doorstep of President Akufo-Addo.

According to Mr Oquaye Jnr, it is unfair to blame the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the flagbearer for the ruling party (NPP) to be held responsible for the current state of the economy.

Addressing journalists at the launch of the 2024 election manifesto by the NPP, he admitted that Dr Bawumia is the head of the Economic Management Team. But quickly added that the management of the economy is handled by the President.

“Dr Bawumia was the head of the Economic Management Team. That is true, but Dr Bawumia was not in charge of the economy, was he? Dr Bawumia is not the president,” Mike Oquaye Jnr said in an interview with JoyNews.

Ghana is battling high inflation, hike in fuel prices, cedi depreciation, among others.

Some Ghanaians have blamed the Vice President for the current state of the economy following several assurances in the past few years.

In 2020, the Vice President insisted that Ghana’s exchange rate has fared better under the Akufo-Addo-led government than the previous administration.

“Fundamentally, we have managed the cedi much better by all accounts. We did arrest the depreciation of the cedi and if you look at the records in terms of the depreciation of the cedi in the last eight years, since the NPP came into power, the rate of the cedi depreciation is 50 percent less than what it was before. That is what the data shows. So yes indeed, we have arrested the depreciation of the cedi and brought down inflation and interest rates. We have also brought down the deficit and increased growth. We have reduced unemployment, reduced the price of electricity and water and created many jobs. We are the only government that had been able to do that,” Dr. Bawumia mentioned.

Presently, a dollar is valued at almost GHC16 at the forex. Ghana’s inflation rate hovers around 20% despite recording a decline in four consecutive months.

  • Bawumia is practically promoting Mahama – NDC

Bawumia is practically promoting Mahama – NDC

Former Greater Accra Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of assuming the role of an opposition leader.

According to Mr Coker, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Bawumia, is actively criticizing and vowing to dismantle the policies of the Akufo-Addo government, of which he is a prominent member.

In his remarks on XYZ TV on August 15, 2024, Mr Coker suggested that by attacking the policies of his own administration, Bawumia is effectively positioning former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s candidate, as a more capable leader compared to the current government.

“Now that Bawumia has become the opposition leader, he doesn’t say anything about his government. He says, ‘I would cancel E-Levy when I am voted into office,’ but his government is implementing it now; he says he would abolish the betting tax, but the tax is being taken by this government.

“He says he would reduce electricity tariffs, but they are going up now under his government. When he comes, the dollar rate will go down, but the rate is going up now. So, Ghanaians must listen carefully. Here is somebody in the government who has now denounced his government, so the first thing he is saying is don’t vote for my government, and then don’t vote for me because the government I am part of is a failure,” he said.

He added, “Because if you are denouncing, if you are not able to tout the things your government has done, how can you come and seek the mandate of the people? So, he has shot himself in the foot. He is virtually telling Ghanaians to vote for Mahama.”

  • Napo is young and can help Bawumia do the job – Suame MP

Napo is young and can help Bawumia do the job – Suame MP

Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed confidence in Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s ability to effectively support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate in the 2024 elections.

The Suame MP highlighted NAPO’s youth, energy, and competence as key factors that make him the ideal choice for the role.

In a recent interview on Nhyira FM’s Kroyimu Nsem show with Nana Kwadwo Jantuah, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained why he was not selected as Bawumia’s running mate, pointing to his age as a significant factor.

“I would not say it was a rejection, but looking at my age, it would not be the best to be appointed as a running mate. After eight years, I would have less energy to continue as a leader of the party,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs emphasized that the role of a running mate demands significant energy and mobility, qualities he believes NAPO possesses in abundance.

“My age wouldn’t permit me for the running mate bid, but NAPO is young and best fit for the job. This running mate thing requires a lot of energy and competence to help the flagbearer, and NAPO can perfectly do the job,” he added.

The Suame MP also addressed the distinct leadership style that Dr. Bawumia would bring to the presidency, noting that Bawumia’s vision, though shaped by his experience in the current administration, will be uniquely his own.

“Every President has a unique vision before coming into office. Although Bawumia has worked with Nana Addo, he will have his own way of doing things, so his vision is different from that of the President. This is why he has promised to continue some of the works of the President and make changes to those he thinks don’t align with his vision,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu remarked.

Further insights into the decision behind Bawumia’s choice of NAPO as his running mate were provided by Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni in his book The President Ghana Never Got.

Manasseh revealed that NAPO, who had been preparing to contest for the NPP flagbearer position himself, chose to support Bawumia instead, a move that greatly influenced Bawumia’s decision to select him as his running mate.

“When Bawumia reared his head, NAPO told Bawumia that he had been preparing for a long time to contest, but since Bawumia was contesting, he would step back and support his candidacy. Bawumia was touched by that gesture and earmarked NAPO for the running mate position,” the book states.

Despite concerns about NAPO’s perceived arrogance, his political influence and strong connection to the Ashanti Region made him a strategic choice for the role.

  • My ‘old’ age didn’t allow Bawumia to pick me as his running mate – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

My ‘old’ age didn’t allow Bawumia to pick me as his running mate – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has clarified that his age was the primary reason he was not selected as the 2024 running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Addressing the speculation, he stated that his decision to step back was due to the demands of the role, which require substantial energy and mobility, something he believes might be limited by his age.

“I would not say it was a rejection, but looking at my age, it would not be the best to be appointed a running mate. After eight years, I would have less energy to continue as a leader of the party,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained during an interview on Nhyira FM’s Kroyimu Nsem show with Nana Kwadwo Jantuah.

He further elaborated that his decision was also influenced by the availability of other capable individuals within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who are more suitable for the position.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu praised the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, as the running mate, citing his youth, energy, and competence as key attributes.

“My age wouldn’t permit me for the running mate bid, but NAPO is young and best fit for the job. This running mate thing requires a lot of energy and competence to help the flagbearer, and NAPO can perfectly do the job,” he stated.

The Suame MP also urged Ghanaians to recognize that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision for the country is distinct from that of President Akufo-Addo.

He emphasized that while Bawumia has been a key figure in the current administration, his leadership approach and priorities will differ.

“Every President has a unique vision before coming into office. Although Bawumia has worked with Nana Addo, he will have his own way of doing things, so his vision is different from that of the President. This is why he has promised to continue some of the works of the President and make changes to those he thinks don’t align with his vision,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained.

Additionally, Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, in his book The President Ghana Never Got, shed light on the reasons behind Dr. Bawumia’s choice of NAPO as his running mate.

According to Manasseh, NAPO had initially been preparing to contest for the NPP flagbearer position but decided to step aside to support Bawumia. This gesture, coupled with NAPO’s political influence in the Ashanti Region, played a significant role in Bawumia’s decision.

“When Bawumia reared his head, NAPO told Bawumia that he had been preparing for a long time to contest, but since Bawumia was contesting, he would step back and support his candidacy. Bawumia was touched by that gesture and earmarked NAPO for the running mate position,” the book reveals.

Despite concerns about NAPO’s perceived arrogance, his strong political standing made him a strategic choice.

Bawumia is not corrupt and he will never be – NAPO

The NPP’s running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has come out strongly in defense of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserting that he is entirely free from corruption and will remain so.

In a discussion with investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, following the presentation of Azure’s latest book, Dr. Opoku Prempeh praised Dr. Bawumia’s integrity and genuine dedication to the country.

“The flagbearer I serve is not corrupt, he has never been corrupt, and he never will be,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserted.

Manasseh Azure’s new publication, The President We Never Had, delves into the current administration’s various events, including allegations of corruption.

The book also features a chapter on Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s selection as the NPP running mate, highlighting the behind-the-scenes efforts involved.

During the book presentation, Manasseh Azure noted, “This book sheds light on some of the key events that have occurred in this government, from the early days of the administration to the present.”

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, pleased to receive the book, committed to reading it in full and sharing his perspective.

“I love reading, and I will definitely go through the entire book and share my thoughts with you. I’m also working on a few books to tell my story as Education Minister and Energy Minister,” he added.

Ghana may have many chiefs, but true kings like you are rare – Bawumia to Ga Mantse

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, paid a visit to the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, on Monday, August 13, 2024, to extend his Homowo greetings and express his deep appreciation for the Ga State.

In a video shared on the Ga Mantse’s Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia lauded the Ga Mantse as one of the few true kings in Ghana, acknowledging the Ga people’s significant role in hosting the nation’s capital, Accra.

“Nii Ga, you are one of the few kings we have in Ghana. There are many chiefs but very few kings, you are one of the few kings.

“The Ga State is a very big state. So, when I see the symbol of the elephant, it tells me it is a very big state. I’m so happy, as I said, to be here. You (the Ga Mantse) are my father, I live on your land. I know that the Ga State has offered Ghana so much being the capital, hosted all of us from all parts of Ghana,” he said.

He recognized that hosting the capital has brought both benefits and challenges to the Ga people and pledged to address these challenges if elected president on January 7, 2025.

“I know that there are costs as well as benefits (to hosting the capital). I am very aware of the many costs that have come to the Ga State as a result of you hosting the capital.

“I want to assure you if by the grace of God, I become president, I am going to work very closely with you (the Ga Mantse) and we are going to right many of the wrongs.”

  • This is why Nurses and Midwives chose Bawumia over Mahama

This is why Nurses and Midwives chose Bawumia over Mahama

Ghana’s nurses and midwives have rallied behind Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections, driven by their evaluation of financial support policies for healthcare graduates.

According to the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association (GUNMA), Bawumia’s administration has promised to continue providing allowances for nursing and midwifery students, a move they find preferable compared to the loan-based system proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama.

GUNMA members highlight that, under Bawumia, the payment of these allowances has been consistent from 2016 to 2021, despite recent issues with arrears.

They argue that the allowance system, which does not require repayment, is more favorable compared to Mahama’s loan proposal, which would impose a financial burden on graduates who would need to repay the loans after completing their studies.

“You are given a loan and at the end of the year you are going to pay it back let us not forget that but then when you are given allowance after graduating you are not going to pay back. But from our former president he wanted to give us loan meaning after school we have to pay the loan back.

“But NPP also came and said they are going to give the allowance though I learnt they are having inconsistency in the payment of the allowance but as I said that from 2016 to 2021 they have been consistent with the payment of the allowance just that 2 years that they are having arrears with some of the students in school. So cancelling allowance and replacing it with student loan we the students do not support this,” he added.

The association emphasized that replacing the current allowance system with loans would disadvantage students already facing financial difficulties.
