Bawumia assures roll out of credit scoring system by end of 2024

Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced that individualized credit scoring will be introduced in Ghana before the end of the year, aiming to simplify life for Ghanaians who wish to make purchases on credit and pay over time.

The Vice President noted that this initiative will shift the country away from a cash-based system and foster the growth of young businesses.

During a ceremony marking International Youth Day at the Pentecost Convention Center in the Central Region on Monday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the transformative potential of this upcoming credit system.

“This system will open up new opportunities for individuals and small businesses to access credit, which in turn will drive economic growth and job creation.

“We are shifting from a cash-based system to a credit-based one, where credit scoring will enable lenders to make informed decisions. This means that someone, like a hairdresser who has just completed training, can purchase equipment on credit and pay in small installments over time. The same applies to carpenters and other professionals.”

The Vice President also vowed to offer digital training to one million youths if he is elected President in the upcoming elections.

“One of the areas that I am going to be very keen on is training one million youth in digital skills. This is because without the skills the youth cannot have the opportunity to participate fully in the fourth industrial revolution. There are many job opportunities, both inside and outside Ghana if you have the skills and training the youth in digital skills can be done without the youth necessarily having a university degree or going to a polytechnic.”

Based on the available information, a credit-scoring system is a statistical tool used by financial institutions and lenders to evaluate a borrower’s creditworthiness.

This system assists lenders in identifying whether a borrower poses a high or low risk, and an individual’s credit score can influence both the maximum loan amount they can obtain and the applicable interest rate.

In countries without personalized credit-scoring systems, all borrowers are typically viewed as high-risk, leading to generally higher interest rates across the board.

Another bait to just win our votes – Transport operators jab Bawumia over licence extension

Transport Operators of Ghana have criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over his promise to extend the validity of driver’s licenses from two years to ten years.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 13, the group labeled Bawumia’s pledge as “a mere attempt to win over drivers’ votes,” accusing him of previously demonstrating a lack of genuine concern for their issues.

Current regulations require that driver’s licenses be renewed or validated every two years by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

Dr. Bawumia argues that this frequent renewal is inconvenient for drivers and has proposed extending the validity period to offer them relief.

The transport operators in their statement admonished Bawumia to focus on removing the taxes his government placed on petroleum products and other challenging issues, including “reducing the acquisition cost of a driving license, roadworthy certificate and vehicle registration as well as honouring his 2020 pledge before gaslighting us with any new pledge.”

Bawumia Cannot Be Trusted Over the Ten Year Renewal of Driver’s License

We have become aware of Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia’s promise to implement a policy that will allow for drivers license to be renewed only after ten years.

While we welcome the suggestion as a brilliant idea we have genuine cause to not just believe but to also state unequivocally that it is another bait to just win the votes of drivers because he has in times past exhibited a glaring lack of concern for the plight of drivers.

It is of public knowledge that drivers in the country, particularly, commercial drivers are in deep shackles of suffering as a result of policies instituted by the NPP and by the same Bawumia’s led Economic Management Team.

It is Bawumia’s government that introduced the Sanitation and Pollution Levy(SPL) on petroleum products and several other taxes that are contributing to the continuous increment in fuel prices.

Under the same Akufo Addo/Bawumia government, the cost of acquiring, renewing and replacing of driver’s licenses and road-worthy certificates have been increased astronomically.

It is also publicly known that prior to the 2020 elections, the same Bawumia pledged electric vehicles that would have been purchased under hire for drivers but his government’s tenure is almost ending and not even a single electric vehicle has been procured for any driver.

Even recently, Dr Bawumia at the GPRTU executives’ elections which was held in Kasoa pledged to have the situation where vehicle owners pay penalties for road-worthy certificate renewal for vehicles that went to the workshop dealt with swiftly. However, he appears to have completely forgotten the July 5 pledge.

The deception is stark and makes it obvious that he is only acting in a cunning manner to win the votes of drivers.

But just as the adage goes, ‘once bitten twice shy’ and so we wish to call on Bawumia to exercise his commitment by removing the taxes his government placed on petroleum products, reducing the acquisition cost of driving license, roadworthy certificates and vehicle registration as well as honouring his 2020 pledge before gaslighting us with any new pledge.

We call on divers to be more vigilant about these promises being churned out by the vice president who is now leading the NPP into the 2020 elections and not to be swayed by same.

I’ll allocate GHS10m yearly to GSA – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to allocate at least GH₵10 million annually to the Geological Survey Authority.

This initiative is part of the NPP’s strategy to enhance the benefits Ghana derives from its mineral resources.

Dr. Bawumia criticized the current “trial and error” approach used by companies with prospecting licenses, which he believes leads to environmental damage.

He emphasized that a more structured approach is necessary for effective mineral exploration.

“We intend to resource the geological survey department with at least GH₵10 million every year to locate the minerals. This will prevent the trial-and-error process of exploring minerals which destroy the environment”.

He further explained that with precise mineral location data from the Geological Survey, exploration companies can be better directed.

His administration aims to introduce a community mining scheme supported by a common user facility.

Dr. Bawumia also stressed the importance of involving traditional chiefs in the mineral licensing process to ensure sustainable and equitable mining practices. He proposed that chiefs should have a stake in future small-scale mining operations.

“We will initiate the community mining scheme and provide them with a common user facility for them to mine.” Dr Bawumia said while campaigning in the Akwatia constituency.”

Avoid close ties with Akufo-Addo if you want to be president – Bawumia told

The Provost of KNUST’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Charles Marfo, has advised the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to distance his campaign from Akufo-Addo if he wants to be president.

This advice follows intense public criticism of President Akufo-Addo’s recent Founders’ Day speech, which was criticized for undermining Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions as a key founder of Ghana.

The President’s controversial decision to reframe August 4 as a holiday and modify the term “Founder’s” is viewed by many as an attempt to revise Ghanaian history to favor his family’s role in the country’s independence.

“Even some vibrant people in the party have seen this, so for me am not so surprised the core team of the Bawumia campaign may hardly come along with him.

“It’s intentional, but if it’s not intentional, am telling the Dr. Bawumia campaign it should be intentional,” he cautioned.

Prof. Marfo argues that to avoid being tainted by this controversy, Dr. Bawumia should strategically dissociate his campaign from the President.

“If you see how the NDC is struggling with their campaign, Bawumia has a clear chance of winning,” he observed.

“If he wants to win, he should not be standing on a platform with personalities who will come and use words that will only irritate people.”

He believes that such a move could be crucial in enhancing Bawumia’s chances of winning the presidency.

Driver’s licence renewal will be extended to 10 years if elected – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a major overhaul of Ghana’s driver’s license renewal system.

He advocated for extending the license validity to up to 10 years, citing the current two-year renewal requirement as burdensome.

Addressing a campaign event in Akwatia, Eastern Region, the Vice President expressed frustration with the existing system.

“We are all drivers and our drivers’ licences expire every two years, it that not the case? Unless you go to the DVLA to renew it why?

“We are saying let’s extend it, eight years, ten years. Let’s make sure we can have the driver’s licence without having to go to renew it every year; it doesn’t make sense,” he stated.

  • Renewing your driver’s licence every year doesn’t make sense – Bawumia

Renewing your driver’s licence every year doesn’t make sense – Bawumia

The 2024 Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized the current system of renewing driver’s licenses every two years, stating that it doesn’t make sense and needs to be changed.

Currently, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) requires all driver’s license holders to renew or validate their licenses every two years.

This process, however, has led to considerable frustration among motorists, who often face harassment from DVLA officials and the police over non-renewed licenses.

Addressing chiefs and stakeholders at Boadua in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for an overhaul.

“Drivers are here. Today, the driver’s license expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years. Let us make sure you can have a driver’s license without having to renew it every year. It does not make sense, and so by the grace of God, we would make changes,” he stated.

Bawumia’s remarks signal a potential shift towards a more convenient system, with longer renewal intervals, possibly up to ten years, similar to the passport system.

  • Bawumia to scrap 2-year driver’s license renewal, proposes 10-year system

Bawumia to scrap 2-year driver’s license renewal, proposes 10-year system

Ghana’s Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is pushing for a significant overhaul of the country’s driver’s license renewal process.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), responsible for promoting good driving standards and ensuring the roadworthiness of vehicles, mandates that all driver’s license holders renew or validate their licenses every two years.

This frequent renewal process has led to frustrations among motorists, who often face harassment from both DVLA officials and the police over non-renewed licenses.

Dr. Bawumia, speaking to chiefs and stakeholders at Boadua in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, expressed his dissatisfaction with the current system.

“Drivers are here. Today, the driver’s license expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years. Let us make sure you can have a driver’s license without having to renew it every year. It does not make sense, and so by the grace of God, we would make changes,” he stated.

Unlike Ghanaian passports, which are renewed every ten years, driver’s licenses currently require renewal every two years—a system that Bawumia views as inconvenient for motorists.

This proposed change aims to reduce the inconvenience faced by drivers and align the renewal process more closely with other identification systems, such as passports.

  • Why Bawumia chose Napo as his running mate

Why Bawumia chose Napo as his running mate

Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has in his recent book, The President Ghana Never Got, unveiled the reasons behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, as his running mate.

According to Awuni, NAPO played a crucial role in Bawumia’s decision to select him for the position.

Awuni reveals that NAPO, initially preparing to contest for the NPP flagbearer position himself, decided to step aside to support Bawumia’s candidacy.

“When Bawumia reared his head, NAPO told Bawumia that he had been preparing for a long time to contest, but since Bawumia was contesting, he would step back and support his candidacy. Bawumia was touched by that gesture and earmarked NAPO for the running mate position,” the book states.

The book also notes that Bawumia’s choice was influenced by NAPO’s strong political standing and connection to the Ashanti Region, despite concerns about his perceived arrogance.

Awuni further highlights that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was surprised to learn about Bawumia’s decision from external sources rather than from his own advisors.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, had been aware of the choice two months before the official announcement to the President.

Additionally, Bawumia had discussed his decision with former President John Agyekum Kufuor before informing President Akufo-Addo.

While Akufo-Addo and his family had hoped for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Bawumia initially preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah. Ultimately, NAPO’s political connections and his significance in the Ashanti Region made him the preferred choice.

  • Top NPP members didn’t want Bawumia as Akufo-Addo’s running mate in 2008 – Manasseh

Top NPP members didn’t want Bawumia as Akufo-Addo’s running mate in 2008 – Manasseh

Senior figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were strongly advocating for Ambrose Dery to be chosen as Nana Akufo-Addo’s running mate in the 2008 election. This was detailed in the book The President Ghana Never Got.

The book, written by award-winning Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, reveals that Akufo-Addo’s selection of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate encountered significant resistance from party leaders, who saw him as merely a skilled banker and economist.

Although Akufo-Addo was committed to having Dr. Bawumia as his running mate, some party members felt that Ambrose Dery was a stronger candidate for the role.

They argued that Dery was an experienced politician who could inspire and mobilize voters, whereas Bawumia was perceived as a dull banker lacking the charisma needed to sway voters toward the party.

Additionally, they contended that if Akufo-Addo sought Northern representation, Dery would be the ideal choice. Nonetheless, Akufo-Addo stood firm in his decision.

Following the party’s defeat in the election, the pressure on Akufo-Addo to replace his running mate intensified. However, he reportedly remained steadfast in his choice.

“Ambrose Dery is a lawyer, and I am a lawyer. I want someone with an economics background to complement me. I will do the politics and he will do the technical things,” Akufo-Addo reportedly told a current cabinet minister who was also an MP when the MPs clamoured for Ambrose Dery,

“I don’t want to blame my loss on that young man. If I change him, I’ll put the blame on him,” the book added.

Additionally, Akufo-Addo was keen to avoid any appearance of unfairness, especially since Dr. Bawumia, who was the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank at the time, had to step down from his role after being chosen as the running mate. Replacing him would have been entirely unjust.

Moreover, after the NPP lost the 2012 election and decided to contest the results in court, no politician was willing to risk taking the witness stand—except Dr. Bawumia.

A cabinet minister mentioned to the author that this was a political gamble that no one else was prepared to undertake.

However, Dr. Bawumia’s ability to display intelligence and quick thinking while responding to questions from lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata convinced all the top party officials that he was the ideal choice for the running mate position.

“Mounting the witness box could destroy a politician forever and the party appreciated Dr Bawumia for taking the risk on its behalf. But Dr Bawumia’s stature in the party soared not only because he witnessed. He dazzled members of his party with his brilliance in the witness box.

“He was sharp and witty, and not even the intimidating cross-examination from lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata could break him. When the hearing ended, he had won admirers beyond the political party. His detractors did not have any reason to doubt that Akufo-Addo had picked the best man for the position. If Akufo-Addo would contest again. Bawumia would, for the first time face no opposition.

In 2016, President Akufo-Addo later declared his intention to run in the upcoming election, and “no sane soul in the NPP opposed the selection of Dr Bawumia as running mate,” the book added.

  • Subject yourselves to scrutiny like I have – Mahama to Akufo-Addo, Bawumia

Subject yourselves to scrutiny like I have – Mahama to Akufo-Addo, Bawumia

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to submit themselves to the same level of scrutiny that he endured during the Airbus scandal investigations.

This demand follows the Special Prosecutor’s recent finding, which cleared him of any wrongdoing in the high-profile case.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, August 8, Mahama expressed his approval of the investigation’s outcome, which he said has vindicated him from the baseless accusations that were made against him. He stressed the need for transparency and accountability from all public officials, regardless of their position, and urged the current administration to uphold these standards.

“In this spirit, we extend the same challenge to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo to subject themselves to equal scrutiny and transparency as we strive for accountability in our leadership,” a part of the release read.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng confirmed that Mahama was not involved in the Airbus scandal, following an investigation that began in February 2020.

The investigation revealed that Mahama, identified as Government Official 1 in UK court documents and Individual 1 in US court filings, played no role in the bribery allegations.

Mahama has repeatedly denied any involvement in the scandal, which emerged after his administration purchased three military aircraft from Airbus. T

he controversy was fueled by then-Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s criticism of the deals, alleging that the contracts, worth over 70 million euros and more than 100 million dollars, were inflated and lacked transparency.

The scandal gained international attention when England’s Crown Court in Southwark highlighted that Airbus had attempted to bribe officials connected to a prominent Ghanaian government figure between 2011 and 2015 to facilitate the sale of two C295 aircraft. Initially, Airbus planned to offer a 5 million euros bribe disguised as a commission to an intermediary with close ties to a key Ghanaian official overseeing the aircraft purchases.

Mahama has consistently challenged the Akufo-Addo administration to prosecute him if any evidence of wrongdoing were found, emphasizing his commitment to transparency and accountability.

  • Refining gold into 24-carat bars isn’t value addition – Bright Simons tells Bawumia

Refining gold into 24-carat bars isn’t value addition – Bright Simons tells Bawumia

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has raised critical concerns about the recently commissioned Royal Ghana Gold Refinery in Accra, arguing that refining gold into 24-carat bars does not constitute true value addition, contrary to claims by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Simons asserts that the real value addition in the gold industry lies in creating finished products like jewelry, rather than simply refining raw gold into bullion.

In a post on X, Simons expressed skepticism about the promises made by the government regarding the economic benefits of the new refinery.

“I was surprised to read in the international press news that Ghana was launching its ‘first commercial gold refinery.’ I was even more surprised to hear the Vice President argue that this new refinery will enable ‘value addition,’ which in turn will lead to hundreds of jobs, and the strengthening of the Cedi,” Simons wrote.

Reuters reported that Ghana has launched its first commercial gold refinery in Accra, marking a significant step in the country’s effort to add value to its gold production and increase national revenue.

Simons pointed out that this is not the first time such promises have been made. He recalled similar claims made when other gold refineries were launched in Ghana, including Asap Vasa in 2013, Sahara Royal Gold Refinery in 2015, and Gold Coast Refinery in 2016. Despite these earlier initiatives, the country continues to grapple with the same challenges in achieving real value addition in the gold sector.

He emphasized that gold refining, as it is currently practiced in Ghana, is a low-margin and high-volume business, which is inherently unprofitable when confined to converting mined gold into bullion.

Citing the example of one of the world’s largest refineries in Perth, Australia, Mr Simons noted that such operations make a margin of just 0.17%. In Ghana, where the cost of capital is high, even achieving a 10% operating profit margin is difficult.

Moreover, he highlighted the structural challenges facing Ghana’s gold refining industry, such as the long-standing relationships between large-scale miners and international refineries, which make it difficult for local refineries to secure significant volumes of raw gold. As a result, these refineries often rely on small-scale miners, leading to lower-quality dore (raw) gold that requires additional processing.

He also warned about the environmental and financial pitfalls associated with refining operations in Ghana. Citing the example of Sahara Royal Gold Refinery, Mr Simons mentioned the environmental disputes it faced with nearby residents and the financial difficulties it encountered, which led to the issuance of dud cheques.

Another significant hurdle for Ghana’s refineries is the lack of certification from bodies like the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). Without such certification, the refined gold must be sold at a discount to less rigorous buyers, further squeezing profit margins. Simons explained that achieving and maintaining LBMA certification is a costly and time-consuming process, with insurance and security costs further eroding profitability.

Additionally, small-scale miners are often reluctant to sell their gold at a discount to local refineries when they can obtain better prices from international aggregators in countries like India and Dubai, where tax incentives make the import of raw gold more profitable.

Mr Simons argued that rather than focusing on refining gold into 24-carat bars, Ghana’s policymakers should prioritize real value addition by supporting the production of finished products like jewellery.

“For gold, the really serious value-addition play is jewellery, not refining into 24-carat bars,” Simons stated.

He also pointed out that the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) was originally established in Ghana to lead such initiatives and suggested that government policy should focus on helping PMMC succeed in this area.

Despite the concerns raised by Simons, the government has celebrated the opening of the Royal Ghana Gold Refinery as a significant milestone in its efforts to add value to the country’s mineral resources. The refinery, which can process 400 kilograms of gold per day, is a joint venture between Rosy Royal Minerals of India and Ghana’s central bank, which holds a 20% stake.

During the commissioning ceremony, Vice President Bawumia emphasized the potential of the refinery to boost local job creation, retain more economic value within Ghana, and strengthen the national currency. He also highlighted the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), launched in 2021, as part of the government’s broader strategy to position Ghana as Africa’s gold hub.

However, Simons’ critique suggests that achieving these goals will require more than just refining gold. It will demand a shift in focus toward higher-value products and a concerted effort to address the structural challenges facing Ghana’s gold industry.

  • Gov’t commissions Gold Refinery with the aim of value addition

Gov’t commissions Gold Refinery with the aim of value addition

Ghana has officially opened a commercial gold refinery, the Royal Ghana Gold Refinery, in Accra, a significant step in the government’s efforts to add value to the country’s mineral resources.

The refinery, a joint venture between Rosy Royal Minerals of India and Ghana’s central bank, with the latter holding a 20% stake, has the capacity to refine 400 kilograms of gold per day.

Initially, it will source gold dore from small-scale and artisanal miners, with future plans to secure licenses for processing gold from large-scale mining operations.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who commissioned the refinery, emphasized that this facility is a strategic investment that aligns with the government’s vision to add value to Ghana’s mineral resources, thus retaining more economic benefits within the country.

He noted that, historically, Ghana has exported its gold in raw form, leading to significant revenue losses and missed job creation opportunities.

“The government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been determined to make value addition a critical component of our export strategy since 2017, and the launch of this refinery is a key part of realizing that vision,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He further explained that the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) initially partnered with Rosy Royal Minerals Limited to actualize this vision, granting part of its land for the refinery’s construction, which began in 2018 and was completed in 2022 despite delays due to COVID-19.

The Bank of Ghana later took over PMMC’s interest in the refinery, while PMMC continues to serve as the National Assayer, ensuring quality and revenue assurance for the refinery’s products.

Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism that with the refinery’s ability to process gold locally, Ghana will be able to sell the refined gold at its appropriate value, thereby retaining its economic worth within the country and creating numerous job opportunities for the youth.

“In addition, the government’s intention to refine all gold produced in Ghana will further enhance our economic independence and resilience,” he added.

He highlighted that with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), launched in 2021, and the establishment of the refinery, Ghana is now positioned as the gold hub of Africa.

This development marks a new era for Ghana and aligns with the government’s vision of building a resilient economy anchored on the country’s mineral resources.

Reflecting on the broader economic implications, Dr. Bawumia explained that Ghana’s current economic structure, heavily reliant on primary commodities and imports, has historically led to a depreciating currency. However, he expressed confidence that the right policies and deliberate use of natural resources could stabilize the cedi and reduce external borrowing needs.

Looking forward, Dr. Bawumia outlined his plans, should he become president, to invest in geological surveys and mapping of mineralized zones, ensuring that small-scale mining concessions in these areas remain 100% Ghanaian-owned.

He also emphasized the need for increased efforts towards land reclamation in areas degraded by mining and proposed the establishment of a Minerals Development Bank to support indigenous Ghanaians in the mining sector.

In conclusion, Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of responsible sourcing for the refinery’s operations, given the ongoing challenges posed by illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

He assured that his government would adopt practical policies to address these issues, prioritizing the small-scale mining sector while ensuring environmental protection. The commissioning of the Royal Ghana Gold Refinery represents a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey towards economic transformation and value addition in the natural resources sector.

  • Bawumia proposes 1% mining export tax to check gold smuggling

Bawumia proposes 1% mining export tax to check gold smuggling

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to slash the mining export tax to 1% if he secures victory in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a campaign rally on August 8, 2024, Dr. Bawumia presented this proposal as a key tactic to address the pervasive issue of gold smuggling, which he identified as a critical problem in Ghana’s mining sector.

He argued that reducing the export tax would make gold smuggling less attractive financially, thereby promoting legal and transparent trade. This move is anticipated to increase domestic gold production, enabling more refining to be done within the country.

Dr. Bawumia also linked this tax cut to his broader economic vision, which includes the “gold for oil” and “gold for reserves” initiatives. These programs aim to leverage gold exports to stabilize the national currency and strengthen Ghana’s foreign reserves, which he considers essential for the country’s economic stability and resilience.

He highlighted the success of a previous reduction in the gold export levy from 3% to 1.5% in 2021, noting that it had led to a significant decline in gold smuggling. Dr. Bawumia credited this outcome to the creation of a more favorable tax environment that encouraged miners to adhere to legal export practices, resulting in a more regulated and transparent gold market.

“A few years ago, I pushed for the reduction of the gold export levy (withholding tax) from 3% to 1.5%. The result of this is that after a sharp decline in 2021, the gold export volumes have been steadily recovering, with 2024 showing promising signs. In the first half of 2024, the small-scale mining sector alone produced a total export volume of 821.97 troy ounces.”

“This is more than double that of Jan-Jun 2023 (404.06 troy ounces) and 2022 (262.05 troy ounces). Also, in value terms, 2024 recorded $1.77 billion higher than 2023 and 2022 just from the small-scale sector.”

“Given our strategic intention to realize higher production volumes to refine locally and support the gold for oil and gold for reserves programmes for a stable currency, I will further reduce the withholding tax from 1.5% to 1%, in the next government under my presidency.”

Expanding road toll system is necessary to ensure equity among road users – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has proposed implementing a comprehensive road-tolling system that encompasses all socioeconomic groups, including the wealthier segments of Ghanaian society.

Dr. Bawumia’s proposal aims to address the current tolling system, which he argues unfairly impacts less affluent areas while exempting wealthier neighborhoods.

His comments followed Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam’s announcement that the government plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls in 2025, as part of the 2024 mid-year fiscal policy review presented in Parliament.

Speaking during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Ghana Highways Authority, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for a more inclusive tolling approach.

“I’d like to make a suggestion that you could consider. Some may say it is provocative. If we are going into our road tolling, we need to think about broad-base tolling. The current architecture that we have in tolling tends to exclude the wealthy parts of the population.

“So if I live in Cantonments, East Legon, Ridge, among others which are the high-earning neighborhoods, I will not see a toll. But if I live in Kasoa or somewhere else, I am likely to meet a toll on the way,” he said on Wednesday.

He noted that the existing system tends to exclude affluent areas such as Cantonments, East Legon, and Ridge, where residents do not encounter tolls, while tolls are more common in less wealthy areas like Kasoa.

He argued that such a system would ensure a more equitable distribution of tolls and suggested that it’s time to re-evaluate how tolling is applied across different regions.

“There seems to be an inequity in tolling and I believe that we should look at broad-base tolling because why shouldn’t everybody pay?” he quizzed.

In 2021, the government suspended road toll collections following the introduction of the e-levy, which has not met expectations.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has leveled accusations against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, alleging the misuse of sole-sourcing for contract awards.

The opposition party claims that the government has granted contracts to members of Bawumia’s family, including his brother.

The allegations were made by the Communications Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi.

He noted that the government awarded two juicy cocoa road projects to Resource Access Limited, a company owned by the Vice President’s brother, in the year 2020.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that two lucrative cocoa road projects, cumulatively valued at GH₵83 million, were awarded to Resource Access Limited, a company owned by the brother of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in 2020.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, these contracts were granted through sole-sourcing rather than a competitive bidding process, resulting in inflated costs.

Gyamfi identified the projects as the upgrading of the Assin Akropong – Odomasi – Asibrem road (22.18km) and the Kyibosohasowodze bungalow feeder road (14.50km).

He detailed that the contract for the Assin Akropong – Odomasi – Asibrem road was awarded at a value of GH₵54,263,718.64, while the Kyibosohasowodze feeder road was valued at GH₵29,468,546.54.

“Apart from the overpriced Sunyani Airport Phase One rehabilitation project, two juicy cocoa road projects were also awarded to Bawumia’s brother’s company, Resource Access Limited through sole-sourcing at an inflated cumulative cost of GH₵83 million in the year 2020,” Gyamfi claimed.

He further argued that these single-sourced projects were found by the Auditor-General to be “overpriced and awarded in breach of the Public Procurement Law, thus, causing the nation huge financial losses.”

Gyamfi referenced paragraph 65 of a Performance Audit Report by the Auditor-General on the construction of cocoa roads, which stated: “COCOBOD did not rigorously analyse its procurement options for value for money but sought approval from PPA for single sourcing and restricted tendering, thus procuring contracts which were up to three times more expensive than they could have obtained through competitive tendering.”

The NDC’s allegations raise concerns about transparency and accountability in the awarding of government contracts, particularly those involving significant sums of money.

The driver was confused, how much more the mate – Winneba resident jabs Bawumia

A resident of Winneba, identified as Awo Sagoe, has shared reasons why she believes the NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is unfit to to become Ghana’s next president.

The current Vice Presiden stated in his major speech as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that “as Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities.”

However, Madam Awo Sagoe believes Ghanaians cannot place their trust in someone who views himself as the driver’s mate.

She argues that if the driver (Akufo-Addo) has been unable to manage the country effectively, there is little reason to expect the mate to perform any better.

“If the driver couldn’t drive properly, what would the mate do?” – Awo Sagoe told the media.

  • I will vote for Bawumia because my children have benefited from Free SHS – Trader

I will vote for Bawumia because my children have benefited from Free SHS – Trader

A Ghanaian trader at the Accra Central Business, Sammy has  expressed strong support for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

Speaking to GHOne TV, the trader highlighted the impact of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy on his family.

According to him, his two children have greatly benefited from the government’s free education initiative, thus influencing his decision in the upcoming elections.

“I will vote for Dr. Bawumia because all my two children have benefited from free education,” he added.

The Free SHS initiative, a cornerstone policy of the NPP, was launched by President Akufo-Addo in 2017, aiming to provide free secondary education to all Ghanaian students.

The policy has been a significant point of political contention, with various parties debating its feasibility and impact.

While many Ghanaians have benefited from the policy, challenges such as funding, infrastructure, and educational quality continue to be areas of concern.

Meanwhile, in a media engagement on July 7, 2024, Mahama refuted claims that he opposed the Free SHS program.

He asserted that as the originator of the progressive Free SHS initiative, he has always supported efforts to enhance its benefits.

“I support any bill that will improve our education to make it sustainable, to afford quality education for our children. So yes, any bill that would achieve this is something that I will support,” Mahama stated.

But president Akufo-Addo has dismissed former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that he initiated the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, labeling it as “ridiculous.”

He highlighted previous criticisms from the NDC leadership regarding the policy’s feasibility.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer’s running mate for the 2024 elections in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, Akufo-Addo asserted that the NDC is not a credible alternative for Ghanaians.

“Today, the free Senior High School, the same people that criticized it and said all sorts of things about it, are claiming that they implemented it. We will take it like that,” Akufo-Addo said.

“We will take it like that because as God is alive, He is not asleep.”

Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama for what he sees as a reversal on the policy.

“This leader criticized us when we said we were going to implement the Free SHS policy. Now that Ghanaians have accepted the policy, he is saying he is the one who introduced Free SHS. Have you ever heard such a thing?”

He continued, “He indeed said that we are forgetful people. Will we forget this too? Today, the leader of the NDC claims he is the one who introduced Free SHS.

“If he introduced the policy, why did he criticize us when we intended to introduce it? He said if he had 2 billion cedis, he would not invest it in free education.”

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to establish a nursing training college in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region if he becomes president.

Addressing the Sandem-Nab, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Dr. Bawumia promised, “A tertiary institution in this district is something that I want to promise you as president; I will make sure you have it…”

This commitment was made during Dr. Bawumia‘s visit to the Paramount Chief’s Palace on the first day of his tour in the region.

Nab Azantilow reiterated his request for a tertiary institution and other projects, highlighting that previous appeals, including the need for a cold system for the Sandema Hospital, had not received favorable consideration.

“We indeed have a site for the establishment of a nursing training college, which stalled due to lack of funding. My people and I will prioritize your votes and hope that you will take this into account, and you shall be rewarded in return,” Nab Azantilow stated.

In response to a request to amend the Chieftaincy Act to grant chiefs more power in adjudicating cases, Dr. Bawumia said: “In fact, it is part of my manifesto, that we are going to amend Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act to empower the chiefs.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized his intention to bring the chieftaincy institution closer to the government, stating, “To do this, we also want to resource the chiefs. We want to pay living allowances to our overlords, paramount and divisional chiefs.”

He added that queen mothers would also receive living allowances to support the administration of the chieftaincy institution.

“Nab, we have a lot of things to do, but I will be in a position to help if you make me president of the Republic of Ghana. I will be able to do a lot, and if you bring Thomas Alonsi to be Member of Parliament for Builsa North, together, we will be able to do a lot,” he assured.

Mahama lacks ideas, choose wisely – Oppong-Nkrumah to Ghanaians

Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has highlighted that the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, effectively tackles problems that John Dramani Mahama fails to address.

According to Oppong-Nkrumah, the opposition excels at criticizing ideas but lacks solutions to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

He cited Dr. Bawumia’s initiatives, such as proposing ways to reduce fuel prices and leveraging digitalization to create job opportunities for the youth.

“When the prices of fuel escalated, Dr. Bawumia suggested an idea on how to ensure that fuel is made cheaper for the people of Ghana. With the issue of unemployment, he is working to ensure that the youth take advantage of the digitalization drive to create opportunities for themselves.

Someone on the other hand said he was not a magician to create jobs and put money in the pockets of the people of Ghana. He said he won’t listen to anyone. I remember when John Jinapor organized a town hall meeting he told the people of Ghana that even if they come to power they cannot reduce the price of fuel. These people condemned free SHS when we wanted to implement it but they now say they implemented the policy,” he told Accra-based Angel FM.

According to Oppong-Nkrumah Ghanaians will have the opportunity to choose between a political party that acknowledges existing challenges and is dedicated to improving lives, and another party that has shown no regard for the people’s difficulties.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that agriculture will be his foremost priority if he wins the 2024 general elections.

During a campaign visit to Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Bawumia outlined his plans to partner with countries like Brazil and China, known for their advanced agricultural techniques, to boost Ghana’s farming industry.

“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will make sure that we have all the different pillars in place for farmers.

“I want to bring in the best practices from countries like Brazil and China that have higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice. We want to also learn from them to adopt some of those technologies that are giving them two or three times the yields per acre that we are doing.”

Additionally, Bawumia promised to shift from chemical fertilizers to lime for soil improvement.

Ghana’s youth don’t have four years to waste – Mahama tells Bawumia

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has strongly criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for seeking to extend the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 8-year governance.

During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mahama argued that Ghana’s youth cannot afford to spend another four years under the New Patriotic Party’s government through Dr. Bawumia’s unproven leadership.

Mahama emphasized the need for experienced and effective leadership to generate opportunities and spur national development.

He condemned Dr. Bawumia’s involvement in the current administration, which he accused of economic mismanagement. According to Mahama, the economic hardships Ghanaians are experiencing stem from poor leadership and decision-making by the current government.

The former President asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s track record does not justify giving him a chance to lead the country. He called on the electorate to evaluate the candidates’ past performances and make a well-informed decision for the nation’s benefit.

“The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand,” he declared.

Mahama emphasized that the youth are seeking experienced leadership to create real opportunities for them, suggesting his own leadership would be more beneficial for the country’s future. He urged Ghanaians to change direction on December 7 and avoid repeating past mistakes.

“On December 7, Ghana must change course, we cannot solve the crisis in which we are with the same people who caused the problem. Several years ago, somebody [President Akufo-Addo] came and said try me, the result is what we’re seeing today. Today, another person [Dr Bawumia] has come and he’s also saying try me.

“And he’s saying the same things the one who has put us in this ditch said eight years ago. And what they are saying is that if they don’t deliver after four years, change me.”

Ghana can’t have another ‘try me’, the previous one threw us into a ditch – Mahama jabs Bawumia

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has sharply criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in the 2024 general elections.

During the launch of the NDC’s campaign on Saturday, July 27, in Tamale, Mahama argued that Ghana’s youth cannot afford to risk another four years on Dr. Bawumia’s untested leadership.

Mahama highlighted the need for experienced and effective leadership to create opportunities and drive national development.

He criticized Dr. Bawumia for his role in the current administration, which he blamed for mismanaging the economy. Mahama attributed the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians to poor leadership and decision-making under the current government.

The former President argued that Dr. Bawumia’s performance thus far does not merit an opportunity to lead the country.

He urged voters to scrutinize the track records of the candidates and make an informed decision that would benefit the nation.

Mahama stressed that the youth are demanding experienced leadership to create real opportunities for them, suggesting that his own leadership would better serve the country’s future. He urged Ghanaians to change course on December 7 and avoid repeating past mistakes.

“The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand,” he stated.

  • Critics of my credit scoring system proposal are clearly ignorant -Bawumia

Critics of my credit scoring system proposal are clearly ignorant -Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized his opponents for their comments on his proposed credit score system, which he plans to implement if elected president.

During the 3i Summit in May 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the necessity of a personalized credit scoring system, supported by digital identity and addresses for all citizens.

He argued that this system would reduce financial risks and borrowing costs, noting Ghana’s leadership in mobile money and financial inclusion over the past seven years as Africa rapidly embraces digital technologies.

Despite criticism from some Ghanaians and politicians, Dr. Bawumia defended his proposal in a Facebook post, expressing disappointment that his opponents criticize without understanding the context.

“With the very significant issuance of the Ghana Card, the merging of databases and the exponential growth of financial inclusion following the success of mobile money Interoperability, all is now set for the operation of a Credit Scoring system for Ghana.

“Among many benefits, the operation of a Credit Scoring system will make it easier for the ordinary Ghanaian to purchase essentials such as cars, mobile phones, obtain loans at lower interest rates.

” In most advanced nations, mobile phones can even be obtained for free from the phone companies with a two or three year contract subject to your credit score. Unfortunately my opponents always think in terms of impossibilities and criticize without knowledge.

“I shared this and many more of my vision for Ghana’s future when I interacted with the good people of the Lambussie, Nandom and Lawra constituencies yesterday as part of my constituency-focused nationwide campaign. Indeed, it is Possible!,” he wrote.

He highlighted the significant progress made in issuing the Ghana Card, merging databases, and achieving mobile money interoperability, which pave the way for a credit scoring system.

Dr. Bawumia underscored that this system would allow ordinary Ghanaians to access essential goods like cars and mobile phones, secure loans at lower interest rates, and even obtain free phones with contracts, similar to practices in advanced countries.

He urged his opponents to focus on the possibilities rather than the limitations.

    Akufo-Addo is Bawumia’s problem – A-Plus

Entertainment pundit and politician, Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus has opined that President Akufo-Addo is a major problem for the campaign of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 General Election.

“The problem in the NPP which will of course affect Bawumia’s campaign is Akufo-Addo,” he said in a video on social media.

According to A-Plus, President Akufo-Addo deceived many Ghanaians after promising to bring progress to the good people of Ghana.

He noted that several individuals warned electorates but no one paid heed to their caution.

Also, a political science lecturer and analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, had expressed similar sentiment.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not realise this until its flagbearer loses the presidential election on December 7.

“I think that the President is a major problem for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign but as of now, they wouldn’t know until they have lost the elections.

“For me, he is not contesting, he is just a distraction for Dr. Bawumia…by that stretch of imagination, I feel that you are rather making Bawumia not to be his own man,” Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere said.

“If you have been chosen as the running mate, it means all of us will rely on you and the leader. It also means that you have to be the backbone of the leader to ensure victory is achieved. I strongly believe that when the NPP wins power, you will empower traditional leaders to reposition them in the development agenda of the country,” he emphasised.

The Okuapemhene encouraged Dr. Prempeh and his team to effectively promote President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to secure a strong voter turnout for the NPP.

“It is because of your hard work for the party and country that you have been chosen to partner with Dr. Bawumia, and I strongly believe that you will deliver,” he noted.

NPP targets 50% of Northern Region votes for Bawumia

Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama has announced that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aiming to secure 50% of the votes in the Northern Region for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in December.

Mahama stated that this ambitious goal is based on the substantial developmental achievements made in the region over the past seven and a half years under the NPP administration.

He pointed to key investments in infrastructure, including road improvements, enhanced health facilities, upgraded educational infrastructure, human resource development, rural electrification, and business growth.

In an interview with Asaase Radio on Friday, July 19, Mahama, who also chairs the Government Assurance Committee, praised the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He emphasized Bawumia’s credibility and innovative policies, which he believes will be instrumental in reaching the party’s target.

Mr Mahama expressed confidence that these accomplishments, combined with Bawumia’s strong credentials, will significantly bolster the NPP’s efforts to capture half of the votes in the Northern Region.

“This time, we are targeting 50% of the votes in the north. Our projection is realistic because John Mahama received significantly more votes than the NPP in the 2020 elections. Dr. Bawumia’s message centers on evidence-based development,” Mahama explained.

He continued, “In the history of Ghana, no government has ever constructed a 168 km road in northern Ghana, but the NPP government has broken that record. The Vice President secured the World Bank project, which facilitated the construction of the road from Tamale to Yendi, extending through Zabzugu to Tatale. No previous government has achieved this.”

Bawumia will use “common sense” to govern Ghana – Gideon Boako

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako, has articulated the Vice President’s commitment to employing a “common sense approach” in transforming the lives of Ghanaians.

Speaking in an interview with Peace FM on Thursday, July 25, Dr Boako emphasized that Bawumia’s strategy focuses on practical and effective solutions tailored to the everyday challenges faced by citizens.

Dr. Boako elaborated that the Vice President’s approach is rooted in understanding the fundamental needs of the people and implementing policies that directly address these issues.

He highlighted several initiatives already launched under Bawumia’s leadership, such as the digitization of key government services and the introduction of mobile money interoperability.

According to Dr Boako, these initiatives have simplified financial transactions and reduced bureaucracy, thereby making it easier for Ghanaians to access essential services.

“The Vice President’s approach is not just about technological advancements but also about ensuring these innovations are accessible to all Ghanaians, regardless of their socio-economic status,” Boako stated.

Dr. Boako asserted that Bawumia’s common sense strategy is yielding positive results, as evidenced by the successful implementation of various policies. He urged Ghanaians to support Bawumia’s efforts, including the recently announced individualized credit scoring system. Boako believes this system will empower people to own more with less and pay less for more.

“Dr. Bawumia thinks through policies before announcing them. I want to highlight the credit score system that he recently announced, which some people don’t seem to understand. They doubted him when he introduced and championed policies like Gold for Oil, drones, Sinohydro, and infrastructure for bauxite, all of which are helping improve lives. He is using common sense to cause a positive impact,” Boako explained.

Boako concluded by reaffirming Bawumia’s dedication to using practical, straightforward methods to address the country’s challenges.

He called on Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia’s vision and initiatives, which aim to make governance more efficient and beneficial for all.

Bawumia to replace fertilizer with lime, provide farmers tractors on credit

Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged robust support for Ghanaian farmers by introducing lime as an alternative to traditional fertilizers and providing tractors on credit to boost agricultural productivity.

He stressed that this shift from traditional fertilizers to lime will significantly improve agricultural productivity.

“We are going to help the farmers with tractors and with credit for them to harvest and we are going to move from the normal fertilizer to lime. Lime makes our soil very fertile, and we have lime in Ghana and we are going to help our farmers use lime in Ghana,” he added.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Wa East, Dr. Bawumia underscored the essential role of farming in ensuring food security and reducing food prices.

He emphasized that enhancing farming practices is pivotal to achieving these goals and committed to supplying farmers with the necessary resources to increase their yields.

Highlighting the disparity in agricultural productivity, Dr. Bawumia noted that farmers in Brazil and China produce 10 and 12 tons of maize per acre, respectively, compared to Ghana’s average yield of four tons per acre. To bridge this gap, he promised to introduce advanced farming techniques from Brazil and China to Ghanaian farmers.

“I want to help our farmers. Farming is the key to bringing food prices down and we are going to help the farmers increase their productivity. If you go to Brazil, an acre of land, maize can come to 10 tons; in China, they can get 12 tons, but in Ghana, we get only four tons. I’m going to apply the practices that we are seeing that have worked in Brazil and in China to our farmers in the Wa East District, to increase productivity,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

In addition to adopting new farming practices, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish “super aggregators” who will purchase produce directly from farmers. This initiative aims to ensure farmers receive fair prices and minimize post-harvest losses.

“We are going to establish super aggregators who will come and buy the produce from the farmers so that the food does not go to waste and they can get good prices for their goods,” he said.

Kayayei driving training launched by Bawumia begins today

The Bus Driving Training for head porters, commonly known as “kayayei,” officially kicks off today, Thursday, July 25, as part of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The training sessions will be held at Ayalolo’s training centers, marking the beginning of a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the skills and opportunities for these marginalized individuals.

Earlier this year, Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, unveiled the Kayayei Empowerment Programme during an event at Madina on May 21.

His announcement included plans to equip head porters with practical driving skills, aiming to provide them with sustainable employment opportunities.

In his launch speech, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his dedication to creating meaningful opportunities for marginalized groups. He highlighted the potential of this initiative to offer practical skills that could lead to stable job prospects for the kayayei.

“I am excited to share that discussions are underway with Metro Mass and Ayalolo to provide driving instruction to the kayayei,” Dr. Bawumia stated, showcasing his commitment to the program’s success.

Defunct DKM founder spotted with Bawumia

The founder of defunct DKM Financial Services, Martin Dele, has been sighted in the company of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during his campaign tour ahead of the 2024 general election.

This news has become topical as Martin Dele has been accused of being the financier and advisor to the NPP’s flagbearer.

The claim was made by Yayra Koku, a deputy director of IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who believes meant for customers of the defunct financial institution are being used to sponsor the Vice President’s campaign.

“In the run-up to the 2016 elections, the NPP accused former First Lady Lordina Mahama of owning DKM Financial Services, which defrauded many citizens in the Bono Region. Well the fair man you are seeing in the picture is Martin Dele the founder of DKM. He is Bawumia’s financier and advisor. He was arrested under JM waiting prosecution until NPP came and released him. Customers of DKM, you can now see where your money is,” he wrote in a post on X.

In 2015, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) suspended the operations of DKM Diamond Microfinance Company Limited for violating the Banking Act.

Also, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) froze five accounts of the company, directing an immediate freeze of all debit transactions on any of the five accounts.

A letter signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the FIC, Mr S.T. Essel, listed the accounts as DKM Mining, Transport, Shea Butter, Cement Depot, all limited liability companies, and DKM Gas Filling Station, all under the DKM Group.

But in a swift rebuttal, the company denied any such actions by the two institutions, insisting that “we are a genuine financial institution registered under the Banking Act of Ghana and under no circumstance should we carry out any activity which is contrary to the approved regulations by the BoG”.

An experienced driver can’t debate a driver’s mate – Ato Forson tells Bawumia

The Minority in Parliament has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, over his recent challenge to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, for a debate ahead of the December elections.

The Majority caucus on Wednesday, July 24, supported the call for Mr. Mahama to accept Dr. Bawumia’s debate invitation, arguing that such a debate would provide Ghanaians with a chance to compare the two parties and assess who is better suited to manage the economy.

However, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, dismissed the idea, asserting that a “driver’s mate” [referring to Bawumia] was not qualified to debate an experienced driver [Mahama].

He suggested that the Vice President should first debate the caucus’ spokespersons on the economy and budget before considering a debate with the former president.

Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that Dr. Bawumia lacks the experience to match Mr. Mahama, making a debate unnecessary at this time. According to him, the disparity in experience between the two politicians is too significant to justify a direct debate.

“Mr. Speaker, monkeys they say play by sizes. Mr. Speaker, how can a driver’s mate debate an experienced driver? Mr. Speaker, in this house, the spokesperson for the minority on the issues of finance is Honourable Adongo. The spokesperson for the minority for the issues of the economy is Honourable Kwaku Ricketts Hagan and the spokesperson for the budget for the minority is Honourable Ampem Darko.”

“Mr. Speaker, we all know that the Chairman of the Economic Management Team is the Vice President, so the Vice President can only debate Honourable Adongo. He should debate Honourable Adongo or debate Honourable Ricketts Hagan.”

“A driver’s mate cannot debate an experienced driver. Mr. Speaker that is the fact. So, we throw the challenge, he should debate Honourable Adongo first, Honourable Ampem second, Honourable Ricketts Hagan third before he considers debating former president John Mahama,” he insisted.

An experienced driver cannot debate with a driver’s mate – Minority replies Bawumia

Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has advised Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to consider debating with Minority spokesperson on finance, Isaac Adongo rather than former President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Ato Forson clarified that after Dr. Bawumia has completed debates with Isaac Adongo and former Deputy Finance Minister Kwaku Ricketts Hagan, he may then engage in a debate with former President Mahama.

“Mr Speaker, monkeys they say play by sizes. Mr Speaker, how can a driver’s mate debate an experienced driver? Mr Speaker in this house the spokesperson for the minority on the issues of finance is Honourable Adongo.

“The spokesperson for the minority for the issues of the economy is honourable Kwaku Ricketts Hagan and the spokesperson for the budget for the minority is honourable Ampem Darko.”

“Mr Speaker we all know that the Chairman of the Economic Management team is the Vice President so the Vice President can only debate honourable Adongo. He should debate honourable Adongo or debate honourable Ricketts Hagan.

“A driver’s mate cannot debate an experienced driver. Mr Speaker that is the fact. So, we throw the challenge, he should debate honourable Adongo first, honourable Ampem second, honourable Ricketts Hagan third before he considers debating former president John Mahama,” he stated.

His remarks come as Dr Bawumia, challenged former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to a live presidential debate to present their respective visions and policies to the people of Ghana.

Speaking to thousands of supporters in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed his eagerness for a debate with Mahama.

However, he remained skeptical about its likelihood, suggesting that Mahama might be avoiding the opportunity.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country on the governance,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. I have never heard an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate. But he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies,” the NPP flagbearer added.

Dr. Bawumia further criticized former President Mahama, stating that Mahama and his team are unable to clarify their concept of a 24-hour economy. He accused Mahama of avoiding a debate to prevent being exposed, saying, “He says he has a 24-hour economy which he cannot explain. It is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain it and none of his people can explain it. They say they will be exporting lions and elephants.”

In advanced democracies, presidential debates are a staple of the electoral process. Many, including civil society groups, have advocated for a debate between the two leading candidates to allow Ghanaians to hear their policies and vision for the country.

With Vice President Bawumia having issued the challenge, the onus is now on former President Mahama to respond.

Absurd! It will take 50 years to finish paying for Bawumia’s GHC2 a month smartphone – UG Prof explains

A professor with the University of Ghana (UG), Lord Mensah, has rubbished Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s plan to provide smartphones on a two Ghana Cedis (GHC2.00) monthly payment scheme.

He has called it financially impractical.

In a post on the X platform, Executive Director, Centre for Investment Advisory and Sustainable Finance (CIASF), analyzed the proposal and highlighted a fundamental flaw in the plan.

According to him, the minimum price for an android phone in Ghana is one thousand and two hundred Ghana Cedis (GHS 1200.00).

He added that assuming no interest is charged and payments are made consistently, buyers would take fifty (50) years to fully pay off the phone.

Prof economist questioned the practicality of such a plan, noting that the lifespan of a phone is significantly shorter than the proposed repayment period, making the scheme financially unfeasible.

“Minimum Android phone is GHS 1200 in Ghana. So let’s do the analysis. Assume the government is subsidizing it so the bank will lend to the buyer at zero interest rate. I don’t want to use compound and annuity effects. Let’s make it simple at zero rate. At GHS 2 monthly payment, the buyer will do 1200/2=600 times payments.

Divide the 600 by 12== 50 years. It will take 50 years to pay for a GHS 1200 phone. Now the question is, what is the life span of a phone? How can you buy something on credit with the payment period being more than its life span? It doesn’t make economic and financial sense,” he wrote.

During a campaign event in the Northern Region, Dr. Bawumia committed to improving access to smartphones for Ghanaians if he is elected president.

He outlined a plan to partner with mobile phone manufacturers to offer smartphones on a credit basis.

Under this plan, citizens would be able to purchase phones and repay them in monthly instalments as low as GHC1 or GHC2.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the goal of this initiative is to bridge the digital gap and enhance connectivity across Ghana by making smartphones more accessible to the general population.

“We will make access to mobile phones affordable,” Dr. Bawumia announced. “We plan to collaborate with phone manufacturers to set up a system where citizens can purchase smartphones on a credit plan.

“This means buyers would pay in small, manageable amounts—just GH¢1 or GH¢2—until the full cost is covered. Our goal is to ensure that everyone has access to a smart device.”

Only mango minds will believe in Bawumia’s 1 Cedi phone-on-credit policy – UG Lecturer

Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Kobby Mensah, has reacted to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s ambitious plan to make mobile phones accessible to all Ghanaians by partnering with phone manufacturers to allow citizens to purchase phones on credit.

They will be required to pay as little as one or two cedis per month. He says the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and enhance digital inclusion across the country.

“We will make mobile phones accessible; my government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can afford them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

But the Political marketing strategist does not buy into this idea and he believes rational Ghanaians should not as well.

In a post on X platform, he wrote, “Only Mango minds will believe a certain 1 Cedi phone- on-credit policy, and Ghanaians aren’t Mango minds.”

His comment has been deemed harsh by some users on X.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that increasing access to information and communication technology is crucial for modern living, providing opportunities for education, business, and social connections.

He noted that many Ghanaians currently lack access to smartphones due to high costs, a barrier his government aims to eliminate through this innovative scheme.

“Access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens up opportunities for education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. By making smartphones affordable, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital age,” he added.

The plan involves partnerships with major phone manufacturers to ensure that the devices are available at low costs and on favorable payment terms.

Additionally, the initiative includes measures to educate users on how to leverage smartphones for personal and professional development, further empowering more Ghanaians to participate in the digital economy.

Can offering smartphones on credit address Ghana’s issues? – Basintale to Bawumia

Deputy National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has denounced the government’s new plan to distribute mobile phones to Ghanaians on credit as a “misplaced priority.”

In an appearance on TV3 Newday on July 22, he contended that the government should be addressing more urgent concerns, such as resolving outstanding payments for NABCO trainers and school feeding caterers.

“Providing smartphones doesn’t meet the demands of Ghanaians. After they get the smartphones on credit, will it solve the unemployment problem?”

“Go to the airport and see the number of people leaving the country. We must advise Dr. Bawumia to be serious. He should look at Mahama and the kind of policies he wants to bring. Dr. Bawumia has suddenly become a jocular person; if he doesn’t lie, he will joke,” he added.

He emphasized that campaigns should be about crafting policies while actively listening to the needs and concerns of the people.

“As I speak, the rains have started. The people in Dr. Bawumia’s hometown are waiting for the spillage of the Bagre Dam, and Dr. Bawumia believes a smartphone is needed at this time,” he noted.

Malik Basintale questioned whether Dr. Bawumia believes that providing smartphones is a priority when NABCO trainers and school feeding caterers are still awaiting payment.

“Do you think the policy is a smartphone on credit, school feeding caterers, a bag of fertilizer has shot up, and you stand before people and all you think is a smartphone on credit? The biggest regret Ghana ever had is Dr. Bawumia as head of the economic management team of this government,” he noted.

Presidential candidate and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to improve smartphone accessibility for Ghanaians if elected. During a recent campaign event, Dr. Bawumia detailed his plan to work with phone manufacturers to offer smartphones on a credit basis.

“We will make mobile phones accessible. My government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can afford them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month.”

He emphasized that this initiative is a key component of his administration’s digital inclusion strategy and overall digitization agenda.

2024 mid-year budget will be one of the usual propaganda – NDC

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has sharply criticized the forthcoming mid-year budget, labeling it as lacking vision, purpose, and effectiveness in addressing the issues created by the current government.

In remarks made to Gh One TV prior to the budget presentation, Murtala Muhammed argued that the budget fails to inspire hope among Ghanaians, who are already disheartened.

He pointed out that the prevailing sense of hopelessness has cast a shadow over the budget discussions, reflecting a general skepticism about the budget’s ability to tackle the nation’s pressing concerns.

“The demoralizing state of this country under the watch of President Nana Addo and Dr. Bawumia is not only limited to those of us in opposition. Even our colleagues in the NPP themselves are demoralized because they can tell that this mid-year budget is visionless, purposeless, and cannot salvage the mess that we have been subjected to by Dr. Bawumia and President Nana Addo. I guess that is the reason why you don’t find the euphoria that characterizes mid-year budgets.

“Because if you observed, the previous mid-year budgets except even the last one and this one, the euphoria is not there. People are not enthused, people are not even interested because they know that once again it’s going to be the usual propaganda and stories…”, he said.

The Chiefs and residents of Wechiau in the Wa West constituency of the Upper West Region have pledged their support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates in the upcoming elections, citing the party’s long-standing dedication to the region’s development.

The Chiefs stated that NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to formally “announce to us as your parents, that you are vying for the position of the President of Ghana” is further evidence of Dr Bawumia’s respect for traditional institutions” , and they would reward him in due course.

Naa Imoru Nandon Gomah II, the Paramount Chief of Wechiau, assured his support for the NPP candidates during Dr. Bawumia’s visit to his palace on Monday, July 22, 2024. Dr. Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, was on a nationwide campaign tour focused on engaging with traditional authorities, religious leaders, opinion leaders, youth, and various community members to discuss his vision for Ghana’s future.

Naa Gomah II highlighted the numerous benefits the region has experienced whenever the NPP has been in power and expressed his appreciation to both previous and current NPP administrations for their contributions to the area’s development.

“Your Excellency, NPP Government since 2004 has given us a lot of developmental projects. The Wa West District was created by the NPP Government in 2004. The NPP Government has given us the biggest project, that is the Agenda 111 hospital project. The NPP government has also given us some dams and dugouts under One Village One Dam. The district has also received some roads. We have also benefitted from the Free Senior High School programme, as well as the School Feeding programme,” he stated.

The Paramount Chief of Wechiau bestowed his blessings upon Dr. Bawumia in his quest to lead the nation, stating, “As Chiefs, we can assure you of our support to enable you continue the good works of the New Patriotic Party Government after 7th December, 2024. We wish you God’s blessings and protection.”

Expressing his gratitude to the Chiefs for their support, Dr. Bawumia urged the people of Wa West Constituency to grant him and the NPP the chance to build on the progress achieved thus far, adding “My vision for Ghana’s future will see us, among others, train our children for the future and equip our youth with the requisite skills to create jobs and compete favourably with their contemporaries across the world.”

Bawumia won’t retain K.T. Hammond as minister if he wins December polls – Nkrumah Tikese

Broadcaster at Okay FM, Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, has criticized Trade and Industry Minister, Kwabena Tahir Hammond (KT Hammond) for dismissing representatives of the Cement Manufacturers Association from a scheduled meeting with the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GCCI) on July 20, 2024.

Tikese questioned KT Hammond’s lack of diplomatic approach to resolving the conflict between his ministry and the cement manufacturers, criticizing his confrontational stance.

During a discussion with the CEO of the Chamber of Construction and Industry, Tikese advised the cement manufacturers to remain patient, suggesting that KT Hammond may not continue as trade minister after the 2024 elections.

He noted that if the NPP government remains in power, it is unlikely that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would retain KT Hammond in his current role.

“He claims he couldn’t withstand the cement manufacturers. Has he established a company? Ever since he was born, has he set up a company?

“Be patient and exercise some restraint. He will be gone in December. He will be gone because I don’t think even if Bawumia wins the election, he will retain him as the trade minister,” he said.

KT Hammond recently made headlines after viral videos showed him ejecting members of the Cement Manufacturers Association from a meeting.

One video from the event captured Minister Hammond firmly insisting that the cement manufacturers vacate the room before the meeting could begin.

“I was invited by the Chamber of Construction. I wasn’t invited by the Association of Cement Manufacturers. I wasn’t invited by them. Can they leave?” the Minister asked.

He explained that he had previously met with the cement manufacturers and that this meeting was specifically intended to engage with the Chamber of Construction.

“It’s either I leave or they leave,” the minister firmly stated, despite efforts from representatives of both associations to justify the manufacturers’ presence.

Leader, 7 others receive GHS100,000 bail for dismantling Bawumia sign post

Eight individuals, accused of taking down a shared billboard featuring Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Hannah Asamoah, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Agona East, have received bail from the Agona Swedru Magistrate’s Court.

The court, led by Victor Kusi, set bail at GH¢10,000 for six of the accused.

Among the eight was Nana Amoako Ababio II, the Regent of Mankrong-Junction. Each is required to provide three guarantors, and the case was postponed to Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

Earlier, two individuals in their eighties were granted bail of GH¢40,000 each when they appeared in court on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

Additionally, the court instructed them to reinstall the billboard at its original location to maintain peace and order.

After the hearing, Asamoah urged party members to refrain from dismantling or defacing opponents’ posters and billboards to prevent legal action.

She mentioned that this behavior had become a recurring issue in Agona East during election years and encouraged supporters to stop it to avoid political disputes.

“The arrest and prosecution of these people must serve as a warning to all political party supporters,” she said. She implored leaders to adopt issue-based campaigns to convince the electorate and stop inciting conflict among supporters.

You snatched the steering wheel and crushed the bus – Anyidoho tells Mahama

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has accused the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, of mismanaging the economy during his presidency from 2012 to 2016.

In a post on the X platform on July 20, Mr. Anyidoho figuratively alleged that Mr. Mahama “snatched” the authority to lead from the late Professor Atta Mills, whom he referred to as the “driver.” Using a metaphor, he likened the Ghanaian economy to a ‘Yutong bus,’ claiming that the former president “killed passengers,” implying harm to citizens, leading to his defeat in the 2016 general elections.

“Your license revoked by the people,” he wrote, suggesting that Mahama was removed from office by the electorate.

Mr. Anyidoho also criticized John Mahama for failing to accept the challenge from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to debate the economy. He argued that such a debate would help enlighten the populace on their respective agendas for the country’s development.

According to Mr. Anyidoho, Mr. Mahama is not prepared or fit to govern the country should he be given a second term. “A mate says he is ready for a driving test with you for the people to determine who is fit to drive the bus – you aren’t ready for a test. No way!”

If Bawumia will win the elections, let him do it fairly – Kofi Bentil to NPP

Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has called on the government to avoid actions that might suggest bias towards the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

Kofi Bentil, while expressing his support for Dr. Bawumia, emphasized that any victory should be achieved through legitimate means.

“I support Dr. Bawumia, but if he is to win this election, it must be fair and square,” Bentil stated.

His remarks come in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in charge of Operations.

The appointment has sparked debate, with some Ghanaians questioning whether it is an attempt to undermine IGP Dr. George Dampare.

Concerns have been raised about the possibility of this move being a strategy to “clip the wings” of Dr. Dampare or even remove him from his position.

During an appearance on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Mr Bentil criticized the President’s decision, arguing that appointing a deputy IGP with specific responsibilities might reinforce allegations of a plot to oust Dr. Dampare.

He highlighted that the NPP had previously demonstrated its commitment to Dr. Dampare’s tenure by voting with the minority in Parliament to accept the Commission’s report, indicating no problem with the IGP.

Despite this, Bentil expressed concern over recent actions by some government operatives that seem to contradict this stance.

“Now you clearly have a situation where operatives within this same government have gone to do something which is clearly not permitted within the law, so it brings back that situation,” he noted.

Bentil warned that such actions could negatively impact public perception and undermine trust in the electoral process. He advised that meaningful dialogue and transparent practices are essential for changing minds and ensuring a fair election outcome.

“Dr. Bawumia is campaigning, so those operatives who think that undermining the process is a way to win the election are wrong and should stop it!” he asserted.

MP for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has predicted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could secure the presidency with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their candidate, despite possibly losing parliamentary seats.

This suggestion follows a Fitch Solutions report that predicts a strong chance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning the December elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Big Issue, Dr. Adomako Kissi challenged this forecast by pointing to examples from other countries where ruling parties have lost parliamentary seats but still managed to retain power.

He referenced France, where the government lost 100 seats but the president stayed in office, and South Africa, where the ANC lost seats yet remained in control.

Dr. Adomako Kissi indicated that the NPP could win the presidency with Bawumia while potentially seeing a decline in parliamentary seats from 138 to 102.

He assured that the NPP is not taking the prediction lightly and is focused on their objective of breaking the ‘8’.

“My key point today Is that for me, from a mathematical standpoint and based on trends in the rest of the world, France’s sitting government lost 100 seats, but Macron is still in charge. My key point here is that there’s even a possibility, and all of us can hear me out, that Bawumia wins and NPP numbers in Parliament drops, that possibility is very, very possible, considering how things have happened in another jurisdiction.”

“ANC literally lost many seats; they are still there. When you go to England, the reverse happened. That’s why I’m saying that who knows, our 138 may come to 102, and then we still retain power, that’s also a possibility.”
