Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia took part in the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the Ahmadiyya Mission in Ghana and the Mission’s 91st Annual Convention at Pomadze in the Central Region.

He lauded the mission’s contributions to Ghana’s socio-economic development in a Facebook post shared on Thursday, February 22.

“This morning, I joined the Ameer and Missionary in charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, and the Ahmadiyya fraternity, in Pomadzie, Central Region, for the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of Ahmadiyya Mission in Ghana, as well as the Mission’s 91st Annual Convention.

“Since its establishment in the then Gold Coast, the Ahmadiyya Mission has contributed immensely to the development of Ghana, in many spheres, especially in health, education, peace-building, good governance and advancing good morals.”

“With 7 hospitals and 315 educational institutions to their credit, the Mission’s contribition to expanding access to education is truly remarkable, and I commended them for their effort, which is in line with our government’s vision of providing free inclusive access to secondary education,” Bawumia said.

“She saved me”! – Ken Agyapong details what his wife did for him after losing NPP primary

A former contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership, Kennedy Agyapong, has disclosed that he was about to make a harsh speech after losing the party’s presidential primary last year.

He said his wife intervened and stopped him from making provocative comments at the event where the winner of the race was announced at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The former NPP flagbearer hopeful confessed that he had intended to vent his anger on stage when he saw some people who had wronged him.

He appreciated his wife for playing a vital role in making him behave and accept defeat in a civil manner.

“When the results were coming and I saw that the vice president had won, I told my team I am going home.

“…anybody who wants to drink champagne should come, we were drinking champagne and I happily decided to go and congratulate the vice president but I would be honest with you, when I got there on stage, and saw the people who had insulted me, I got so annoyed,” he said in an interview on KSM Show on February 23, 2024.

Explaining the incident, Agyapong said, “That day was the first time I took my wife to a public gathering like that. She saved me.

“I would have misbehaved; I will tell you the truth. When I took the mic, the things I was going to say… but I just controlled myself. It is not them alone I was speaking to; it was the party and the nation, so I had to control myself,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong lost the November 4 NPP primaries to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Bawumia won with 118,210 votes, representing 61.47% of the total votes cast.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, secured the second position with 71,996 votes, representing 35.52% of the total valid votes.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto got 1,459 votes, while the fourth candidate, Francis Addai-Nimoh got 781 votes.

I am bitter because people I supported badmouthed me during my campaign – ‘Hurt’ Ken Agyapong reveals

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former presidential candidate aspirant and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has expressed his disappointment with the treatment he received during the 2023 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Primary.

In a yet-to-be aired interview with KSM on Pan Africa Television, he acknowledged the right of MPs to choose their preferred candidate but expressed particular hurt over the “insults” he endured from fellow MPs, especially those he considered close friends and whom he had supported financially in their parliamentary campaigns.

“It is not every MP who didn’t vote for me that I am angry at, no, everybody has a choice. But the very people who were my friends that I have helped to bring them to Parliament.”

He stressed that it was the betrayal and personal attacks, not the Vice President‘s victory, that fueled his bitterness.

“It’s not the betrayal, but the bad things they said about me, that is where I have the problem. So who says I’m not bitter? I am bitter, I am not because the vice president won, I am bitter because of the people that I have helped. If you are not going to vote for me, no problem but the insults. I can’t forgive them.”

During the NPP Presidential Primaries, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong garnered 71,996 votes, representing 37.41% of the votes, while Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious with 118,210 votes, accounting for 61.47%, securing his position as the party’s flagbearer.

Profile of Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah; Bawumia’s ‘economic saviour’

Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced his manifesto team for the 2024 elections on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

The committee, chaired by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, includes notable figures like former Black Stars player Asamoah Gyan, who heads the Youth and Sports sub-committee, and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong, chairman of the Housing and Infrastructure sub-committee.

Rumors suggest that sub-committee chairs could become ministers in their respective sectors if Dr. Bawumia wins the presidency. Of particular interest to many Ghanaians will be Dr. Bawumia’s economic plans, given the current challenges facing the country.

To address these concerns, Dr. Bawumia has chosen Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, former Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament and former MP for New Juaben South, to lead his economic team.

If the speculations are accurate, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah could become Dr. Bawumia’s Finance Minister in the event of a victory.

    Who is Dr. Assibey-Yeboah

Dr. Assibey-Yeboah, known for his critique of the Akufo-Addo government’s policies, has a distinguished background in economics and politics. Born on March 2, 1974, he hails from Obo-Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Before entering politics, he served as a lecturer at various institutions in Ghana and the United States. Dr. Assibey-Yeboah holds a BSc in Agricultural Economics from KNUST, an MS in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Delaware, and MA and PhD degrees in Economics from the University of Tennessee.

During his tenure as MP, he chaired the Finance Committee of Parliament and was known for demanding government accountability. He has also contributed to economic research, with his work published in reputable journals.

Dr. Assibey-Yeboah’s appointment signals Dr. Bawumia’s focus on economic recovery and stability, a critical issue for Ghana’s future.

Delving into his vision for the country, Bawumia declared, “I believe I am the best candidate for the presidency of this country in the 2024 presidential election.”

“I recognise that submitting myself to your service, the electorate, to vote for me as president is no different from interviewing for a job,” he said.

Bawumia’s claim to create 2.1m jobs a fabrication – NDC communicator

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ayisha Alhassan, has challenged the job creation claims of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that his assertion of generating approximately 2.1 million jobs since 2017 contradicts official unemployment statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

Alhassan, speaking on TV3, questioned the credibility of Vice President Bawumia’s figures, pointing to the GSS report indicating 1.3 million unemployed youth aged 15–35. She labeled Bawumia’s job creation narrative as inconsistent and fabricated.

“If you lie about creating 1.2 million jobs, the unemployment rates will expose you. The Ghana unemployment rate went up from 1.2 to 1.3 million, yet Alhaji Bawumia says he has created 2.1 million jobs,” she remarked.

“When you lie about creating 1.2 million jobs, the unemployment rates will expose you. The Ghana unemployment rate went up from 1.2 to 1.3 million, yet Alhaji Bawumia says he has created 2.1 million jobs.

“As for the stories about job creation, I don’t even want to go into the inconsistencies because previously, it was 5.3, then it moved to 2.3, and now we have 2.1 million jobs. I don’t know if they concoct those figures to come and announce to us,” she stated.

Ayisha Alhassan argued that genuine job creation would manifest in economic improvements such as enhanced economic growth, reduced interest rates, and increased tax revenues.

Contrary to this, she highlighted the current economic challenges of high inflation, debt, and fiscal deficits.

“If you have created 2.1 million jobs, it should reflect in the economy, as it will mean that a lot of economic activities will be going on. There would be a beef up in economic growth. Your interest rates would positively reflect it. Unfortunately, all economic indicators are pointing down south. They do not support any of these rhetoric,” she added.

Vice President Bawumia had proclaimed the creation of around 2.1 million jobs, covering both formal and informal sectors, during a lecture on February 7.

“Bawumia’s Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system exposes Ghanaians to cyber fraud attacks – Software engineer

The Tap and Go Transport Service, which allows passengers to conveniently pay for their fares using a reloadable card, which can be tapped on designated devices installed on buses or rails, has proven to be a medium that makes Ghanaian commuters susceptible to Cyber fraud attacks.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, launched the Tap and Go Transport Service in Accra on Monday, February 19, at the Head Office of Metro Mass Limited.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the new Tap and Go digital system is not confined to intra-city transport like Aayalolo. Instead, it is expansive and designed to support various public transport services. This includes parcel deliveries and tracking, taxi hailing, inter-city bus services, as well as inner-city bus services such as Metro Mass and Aayalolo.

Following this, Yayra Koku, reportedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), voiced apprehensions suggesting potential privacy risks for commuters utilizing the service.

Another X user, Edward Adjei, a Software Engineer & Site Reliability Engineer took it upon himself to expose the vulnerability of the newly launched system.

He managed to gain access to 1,079 user logins and details with different role levels, and he also accessed panels (three different websites for this project) and some video recording from the monitoring software’s server.

He managed to also get access to the financial details of these users, including their bank accounts, code, mobile money among others.

According to Mr Adjei, his sole purpose is to lay bare the flaws of the systems and how several citizens risk being defrauded or having their bank accounts hacked.

“Web server is pretty old and could crash with certain specially crafted payload sent to it. Can easily deny services for all services. Here’s one of the issues. It’s a high vulnerability. Fix now,” he added.

Mr Adjei noted that after gaining access to the server, he got access to a lot of other Asian recordings, compelling him to find out if the Tap and Go Transport Service is made solely for Ghana.

The flaws in the Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system contravene the general data protection regulation (GDPR), which is the strongest privacy and security law in the world.

    The GDPR defines:

    • individuals’ fundamental rights in the digital age
    • the obligations of those processing data
    • methods for ensuring compliance
    • sanctions for those in breach of the rules

    Obligations for businesses and organisations

The GDPR establishes the general obligations of data controllers and of those processing personal data on their behalf (processors).

These include the obligation to implement appropriate security measures, according to the risk involved in the data processing operations they perform.

Controllers are also required in certain cases to provide notification of personal data breaches. All public authorities and those companies that perform certain risky data processing operations will also need to appoint a data protection officer.

Individuals can lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority and have the right to judicial remedy and compensation. They have the right to have a decision by their data protection authority reviewed by their national court, irrespective of the member state in which the data controller concerned is established.

Severe sanctions are provided for against controllers or processors who violate data protection rules. Data controllers can face fines of up to €20 million or 4% of their global annual turnover, according to the EU.

Privacy of commuters at risk over Bawumia’s Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system – Netizen

Yayra Koku, reportedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced apprehensions regarding the security ramifications of the recently introduced Tap and Go Transport Service, spearheaded by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Taking to X, Yayra Koku expressed concerns about the hosting of the Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system in China, suggesting potential privacy risks for commuters utilizing the service.

The Tap and Go Transport Service allows passengers to conveniently pay for their fares using a reloadable card, which can be tapped on designated devices installed on buses or rails.

Despite Vice President Bawumia’s assurance of a CCTV monitoring system developed domestically, Yayra Koku disclosed that the surveillance software was procured from China and is managed on Chinese servers. This revelation, as per Yayra, presents a notable security vulnerability for passengers and the nation at large.

Yayra Koku criticized the rollout of the system without adequate consideration of its security implications, urging both the vice president and national security agencies to promptly address these concerns to ensure the privacy and safety of passengers.

“This is a plug-and-play software that can be purchased and used for CCTV monitoring. However, Bawumia launched it yesterday, claiming that it was developed in Ghana.

“So, a whole country, Ghana, with its national security apparatus and intelligence, sat down to allow Bawumia to commission such a system without first addressing the underlying security concerns about the vehicle monitoring system?” he asked.

Yayra Koku expressed concern that the software used in the Tap and Go Transport Service could potentially allow the Chinese government or hackers to access passengers’ facial images and personal data. This could lead to unauthorized surveillance of the buses’ activities and movements.

“This software is hosted in China and is available for purchase by anyone who can afford the hardware (CCTV) it powers. My concern is whether we are now entrusting our safety to the Chinese.

“Consider China’s mass surveillance and human rights violations. Anyone who boards the new bus is automatically monitored by CCTV, and their facial images are sent directly to Chinese servers. We do not know what the retention policy is with these companies. Data privacy concerns? Just to name a few,” the post said.

Yayra Koku, said to be a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed concerns over the security implications of the Tap and Go Transport Service recently launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a post on X, Yayra Koku raised alarm over the hosting of the Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system in China, stating that it could jeopardize the privacy of commuters using the system.

The Tap and Go Transport Service enables passengers to pay for their fares using a reloadable card, which they can tap on a device installed on buses or rails.

While Vice President Bawumia highlighted that the service includes a CCTV monitoring system developed in Ghana, Yayra Koku revealed that the software for CCTV monitoring was actually purchased from China and is hosted on Chinese servers. This, according to Yayra, poses a significant security threat to passengers and the nation as a whole.

Yayra Koku criticized the launch of the system without addressing the security implications, calling on the vice president and national security agencies to take immediate action to safeguard the privacy and security of passengers.

“This is a plug-and-play software that can be purchased and used for CCTV monitoring. However, Bawumia launched it yesterday, claiming that it was developed in Ghana.

Has Bawumia imposed over 40 new taxes on Ghanaians?

On Saturday, February 10 2024, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi said on TV3’s The Key Point that over 40 new taxes have been slapped on Ghanaians by the government.

He made this statement while presenting his views on the recent public lecture delivered by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, about his vision for the country.

    10. Stamp Duty (Amendment) Act, 2023, Act 1109 was amended and gazetted on 29th December, 2023 to increase the rate of stamp duties. The new rates range from as low as Ghs18 to as high as Ghs896.30 for duties assessed on specific basis whilst as low as 0.25% to 0.5% on duties assessed on ad valorem basis. 12. Income Tax Amendment Bill – 2022. The Income Tax (Amendment) Act, of 2023 (Act 1094) introduced a 10% withholding tax on lottery and winnings.

Taxes reviewed downward by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government

    – National Electrification Scheme Levy has been reduced from 5 per cent to 3 per cent.

    – Public Lighting Levy has been reduced from 5 per cent to 2 per cent.

    – Tax credits and other incentives for businesses that hire young graduates have been instituted.

–The withholding tax rate for the sale of unprocessed gold by small-scale miners has been reduced from 3% to 1% under the Income Tax (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 2021, Act 1071.

While some politicians argue that an upward adjustment in current taxes increases the tax burden on Ghanaians, tax experts contend that categorising an increased existing tax as a new tax is incorrect.

In conclusion, even with the addition of the increased taxes to the tax list, the new taxes introduced by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government do not exceed 40. This makes Sammy Gyamfi’s claim that the NPP has introduced 40 new taxes false.

  • You disrespected Ghanaians when you said you were a driver’s mate – Nana Ohene Ntow to Bawumia

You disrespected Ghanaians when you said you were a driver’s mate – Nana Ohene Ntow to Bawumia

The former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, has strongly rebuffed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent comparison of himself to a “driver’s mate” within the Akufo-Addo government.

Dr. Bawumia suggested that he should ascend to the presidency to implement his unique vision.

In an interview on GHOne TV on February 20, 2024, Nana Ohene Ntow expressed his disapproval, deeming Dr. Bawumia’s comments both pitiful and insulting to the people of Ghana.

He argued that such statements imply the vice president position is redundant and should be eliminated.

Nana Ohene Ntow asserted, “Once a candidate is voted as president, his running mate is deemed to have been voted. And two, if the president is indisposed today or he’s out of the jurisdiction today, it is the vice president who occupies his shoes until he returns to post.

“So, if Bawumia was in that position and is now telling Ghanaians that that position is all useless, you can’t do anything with the position of a vice president. I think it is even an insult to the constitution of Ghana.”

He added, “Then we probably should listen to Bawumia and abolish the position of vice president because it’s useless. How can you talk like that to the people of Ghana?”

Ohene Ntow, who is the spokesperson of the leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, said that the vice president’s remarks are the worst he has heard from a presidential contender.

Nana Ohene Ntow, also the spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, described Dr. Bawumia‘s remarks as the most disheartening he has heard from a presidential contender.

“That is why I’m saying that statement is the most pathetic statement I ever heard from anyone aspiring to become president of Ghana,” he added.

  • A vice president is a co-driver, not a mate – PPP Chairman to Bawumia

A vice president is a co-driver, not a mate – PPP Chairman to Bawumia

National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has called out Vice President and New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, over his driver-mate remarks.

He disagrees with the notion held by the vice president as a mate other than a co-driver.

“This driver mate thing, Bawumia cannot be a mate; he is a co-driver because the nature of a mate is not neccessarily that of a driver with a licence.

This comes after Dr Bawumia delivered his vision speech as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the UPSA auditorium on February 7, 2024, where he used the analogy of a mate and a driver, where the mate had limited control over driving; hence, in his position as a vice president.

He expressed how limited his powers and authority over decisions are, hence his desire to become president to be able to run the affairs of the country well.

But the PPP chairman, during an appearance on Kwame Sefa Kaye’s Kookrokoo morning show on Peace FM on February 20, believes this narrative is a ‘dangerous’ one to hold on to.

As stated by Mr. Owusu, a vice president is a co-driver and not a mate. As mandated by the constitution, a vice president is one who is eligible to step in as president in the absence of the president.

“But the nature of a vice president is that you are ready when the president is not there; you are there. That is why the constitution of the land says that when the president is not there, you are there.
You are ready for the possibility. So a mate is not ready but vice president, you are ready.”

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia has come under severe attacks from the public and the opposition parties, who accused him of distancing himself from the failures of the Akufo-Addo led government and undermining the president’s leadership in order to appear to deceive ordinary Ghanaians into voting for him in the 2024 elections.

Video: Ghanaians are suffering – Netizens expose NPP, NDC’s opposition message

Netizens are reacting to a viral video showcasing opposition messages from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In the footage, NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is seen during his 2016 campaign, accusing former President John Dramani Mahama of causing an economic crisis across various sectors.

Bawumia asserted, “Teachers are suffering, teachers’ trainees are suffering, nurses are suffering and nurses’ trainees are suffering, patients are suffering, students are suffering, traders are suffering, pensioners are suffering, drivers are suffering, constructors are suffering, civil servants are suffering and farmers are suffering. Fishermen are suffering and industries are suffering.”

Similarly, the National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, is heard criticizing the NPP with similar words used by Bawumia while in opposition.

He listed various groups, stating, “Students are suffering; teachers are suffering; nurses are suffering; doctors are suffering; market women are suffering; drivers are suffering; mates are suffering; Okada riders are suffering; engineers are suffering; pastors are suffering; journalists are suffering; spare parts dealers are suffering; women are suffering; men are suffering; ‘boys boys’ are suffering; ‘girls girls’ are suffering; children are suffering, and all of us are suffering.”

In response to this comparison, an X user wrote, “Who did it better? Chale, are we coming or going? I just want so much more for my motherland… How long will Ghanaians suffer?”

In 2021, discontented Ghanaians expressed their dissatisfaction with President Akufo-Addo’s administration through the #FixTheCountry protest held in Accra.

Protesters, dressed in red and black, passionately chanted patriotic songs and displayed placards calling for an end to corruption and immediate reforms in the education system.

The protest, was the latest expression of anti-government sentiment since March 2020, following the dismissal of the main opposition party’s challenge to Akufo-Addo’s re-election by the top court.

Despite securing a second term with a narrow majority in parliament, President Akufo-Addo has faced increasing pressure as Ghana grapples with economic challenges heightened by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Protesters voiced their frustrations with chants like, “Nana Akufo-Addo, we’re suffering. Do something for us. Nothing is working,” reflecting discontent with the current state of affairs.

I lied, Dr. Bawumia’s brother was not given 87% of cocoa roads contract – Kwabena Marfo of Neat FM

An on -air personality with Neat FM, Kwabena Marfo, has clarified that the previous assertion claiming that vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s brother, Abraham Bawumia, was awarded 87% of the cocoa roads contract was inaccurate.

According to him, upon further investigation his allegations were unfounded.

He added that Dr. Bawumia should show appreciation towards him as his unfounded allegations have brought clarity to the matter.

“The recent clarification establishes that Abraham Bawumia, the brother of Dr. Bawumia, did not receive 87% of the cocoa roads contract, contrary to earlier claims. Acknowledging my error, it is evident that the allegations were unfounded, and I extend my sincere apologies. I think Bawumia should thank me because there has been clarity on the matter,” he added.

In the meantime, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has claimed that his investigation reveals that, out of the 87% sole-sourced cocoa road contracts, two contracts amounting to over GH¢83 million were granted to a company owned by the brothers of Bawumia within a single day.

“By transmittal letter AG.01/109/Vol.2/189 dated 12th June 2023 which conveyed the findings of a performance audit on the construction of cocoa roads, the Auditor-General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu shockingly reveals how a frightening 87% of cocoa road contracts since 2020 were awarded through a non-competitive process, and how there was no value for money with some of the contracts awarded at three-times the actual cost,” the MP wrote in a post shared on X.

    You’re a co-driver not a mate – PPP chair to Bawumia

The National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for describing himself as a “driver’s mate” in the Akufo-Addo-led government.

Speaking on Peace FM, Owusu expressed concern that Bawumia’s characterization is problematic, as someone widely regarded as an “economic Messiah” seeks to distance himself from the government.

Mr Owusu emphasized that the vice president holds the position to assist and contribute productively to the president’s reliance on the country’s progress.

He contested the notion that being a “mate” doesn’t necessitate possessing the qualities of a driver to step into the driver’s role.

“It is inappropriate to characterize a dignified individual in such a manner. We recognize his role as an economic leader, actively contributing to advisory bodies and implementing innovative ideas. However, the narrative suggesting that his boss hinders him from fulfilling his responsibilities is perilous. This situation reflects the challenge of wanting contradictory things simultaneously

“The new team must address and streamline this narrative, as a person cannot simultaneously be enthusiastic and indifferent. Referring to him as a “mate” is inaccurate; he is a co-driver. The role of a mate does not inherently require driving skills or a license, unlike that of a vice president who is constitutionally ready to assume the presidential duties when required. The distinction lies in the readiness and responsibilities associated with being a co-driver, akin to the vice president’s role,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia’s speech, serving as an opening to his official campaign launch following his election as the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party in November 2023, conveyed his humble acknowledgment of playing the role of a driver’s mate in the government.

“As Vice President I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities,” he added.

The Vice President highlighted the significant achievements of the Akufo-Addo-led Government over the past seven years and outlined his vision for Ghana, anticipating a potential election as President on December 7.

Since becoming the Flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia has consistently communicated his dedication to digitizing Ghana’s economy, promoting sustainable job creation, and establishing an inclusive system aligned with global requirements.

In his victory address on November 4, 2023, Dr. Bawumia shared his vision for building an inclusive, food self-sufficient, data-driven, and systems-based nation actively participating in the global digital revolution, as he aspires to lead the country.

‘Tap and Go’ transport initiative to foster transparency, check corruption – Bawumia

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed confidence in the “Tap and Go” transport initiative’s ability to combat corruption in Ghana’s state intercity and intracity transport systems.

Similar to the widely-used Oyster Card in the United Kingdom, the “Tap and Go” system involves a digital card preloaded with cash. Passengers can conveniently pay for their fare by tapping the card on a fixed machine/reader aboard the bus.

The Ghanaian version of the “Tap and Go” card includes additional features, such as physical and virtual versions, to enhance user convenience. Users can download the Tap and Go app on their mobile phones and opt for the virtual card option, allowing them to make payments directly through their phone without needing a physical card.

Speaking at the official launch of the initiative in Accra on Monday, February 19, Vice-President Bawumia highlighted that the implementation of this system will significantly improve transparency within the transport sector.

“It is important to note that, before the Tap and Go system was implemented by Metro Mass Transit, the audit report showed that the company was losing 50% of its revenue annually.

“But since it was implemented by the company, that leakage has been plugged and the revenue that it is making from 200 buses is more than when it was operating 500 buses,” Dr Bawumia said.

“With the Tap and Go system, the problem of vehicle owners worrying about the accurate daily takings and whereabouts of their cars at any given time will be a thing of the past.”

“The problem with the diversion of funds within state-owned intercity and intracity buses will also be a thing of the past, as it will help check corruption by promoting transparency,” he added.

Akufo-Addo may have problems, but Bawumia is far worse – Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed a clear preference for the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over that of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

During an event at the Dome Kwabenya constituency where party flags were unveiled for the upcoming 2024 elections, Kwetey characterized the vice president as a symbol of deception and hypocrisy, labeling him “the biggest liar” in Ghana’s history.

“Bawumia is the worst of them all. The biggest liar, that person, if you joke and you think Nana Akufo-Addo was bad, then I am telling you he is going to be far worse.

“Nana Akufo-Addo may have all the problems, but trust me if you put Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia [together], I will choose Nana Akufo-Addo and leave Bawumia,” he asserted.

While acknowledging the flaws of President Akufo-Addo, Kwetey highlighted the president’s straightforward nature, emphasizing that Akufo-Addo doesn’t pretend.

“Nana Akufo-Addo may be desperate, he may be bad, but at least Nana Akufo-Addo does not pretend. If he doesn’t like you, he doesn’t like you, but this one is a snake who smiles with you but is dangerous.”

Kwetey urged NDC members to actively work towards preventing Bawumia from becoming president in the 2024 elections.

Mr. Dan Botwe was one of the ministers who were relieved of their posts last week in a reshuffle done by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

It is unclear if the possible campaign manager position has anything to do with the reshuffle by the president.

However, sources close to the NPP flagbearer say the decision was made after broad consultations with the rank and file of the party.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also the flagbearer of the NPP, expressed these sentiments after visiting the bereaved family to offer his condolences on Sunday.

“This afternoon, I paid a commiseration visit to the residence of the late ace broadcaster, Martin Kwabena Kwakye alias Wofa KK of Oman FM fame. Wofa KK was a true blue NPP person who was an authority with a strong voice in the media. He served his country well until his demise.

“My condolences to the family and Ken City media. May the gentle soul of Wofa KK rest in perfect peace,” Dr Bawumia wrote.

He doesn’t want to hand over power – Okatakyie Afrifa explains Akufo-Addo’s absence at Bawumia’s lecture

A media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa, has claimed that President Akufo-Addo did not attend Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s “New Chapter” lecture due to displeasure about relinquishing control over the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stemming from his long-standing leadership since 2008.

According to Afrifa, Akufo-Addo had not mentally prepared himself to hand over power as the leader of the country.

“He is not too happy with Bawumia. Even in the NPP primaries that were held, Akufo-Addo didn’t want it to take place because he had not psyched himself to hand over power as the leader of the party [NPP] and the country.

“Since 2008, he has had power over the NPP and all of a sudden he is losing the grip in his hands, so, he is not happy. He was furious when some NPP MPs wanted to partner Dr. Bawumia during the elections. It is not a matter of selling Bawumia but the power he [Akufo-Addo] is losing is a problem for him.”

President Akufo-Addo and several prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were noticeably absent during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s first major speech as the party’s flagbearer, which took place in Accra on February 7, 2024.

During his address, Bawumia likened his role in government to that of a “driver’s mate” and pledged to pursue his own vision and priorities if elected president, urging Ghanaians not to judge him based on the current government’s performance.

As of now, President Akufo-Addo has not commented on why he could not attend Dr. Bawumia’s lecture.

Meanwhile, media personality Okatakyie Afrifa has alleged that Bawumia is not given due respect by his superiors in government. Afrifa claimed that President Akufo-Addo often disregards Dr. Bawumia’s suggestions during government deliberations.

According to Afrifa, this lack of respect led to a point where the vice president stopped attending meetings organized by the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“When Bawumia makes a suggestion, Akufo-Addo does not listen, take it from me. It even got to a point where the finance minister scheduled for a meeting but he was not attending. They don’t respect him at all,” he said on One Ghana TV.

Akufo-Addo has lost faith in Bawumia – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has contended that President Akufo-Addo no longer places trust in the judgment of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In his perspective, the president, who initially brought Dr. Bawumia into the political arena, now dismisses his opinions as lacking the credibility to be implemented.

“Nana Addo no longer takes Bawumia’s opinion as credible enough to even give it a chance to be implemented. Nana Addo no longer trusts the ability and decision-making of Dr Bawumia.

“In the past three weeks, we’ve seen enough reasons to tell the people of Ghana that Dr Bawumia is not the choice for Ghana.

“Why? Because even the sitting president who brought him on because he trusted his abilities has realized that Dr Bawumia’s opinions no longer matter. E-levy, Dr Bawumia, we are being told was opposed to it, but the president went ahead with it.

“If we are to take what Dr Bawumia said in his lecture on bet tax, the president ignored Dr Bawumia; on Emissions tax, the president ignored him. 15% on electricity, the president ignored him and now we are even seeing that the President ignored Dr Bawumia’s opinion on the size of government,” he said.

Sam George expressed these views on the Newsfile program on Joynews channel on February 17, 2024.

  • Bawumia is deceiving Ghanaians, he learnt from Akufo-Addo – Martin Amidu

Bawumia is deceiving Ghanaians, he learnt from Akufo-Addo – Martin Amidu

Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has weighed in on Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential ambitions in a recent statement.

Mr Amidu’s three-page letter, dated February 15, 2024, addresses Bawumia‘s ‘Vision for Ghana’ speech delivered on February 7 at the UPSA auditorium.

After carefully analyzing the speech, Amidu concluded that Bawumia’s vision lacks originality and is merely a replication of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s rhetoric.

He criticized Bawumia for failing to present a distinct vision, suggesting that it mirrors Akufo-Addo’s strategy to deceive voters in both the 2016 and 2020 elections.

“I have read Bawumia’s vision several times since I had time to do so after delivering my keynote address at the University for Development Studies on 8 February 2024 and he comes out to me like a copycat replica of the style and deceptive persuasiveness deployed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in winning the 2016 presidential elections,” he wrote.

He added that after winning the elections on both occasions, the Akufo-Addo-led government only reneged “on all the promises he made on taxes, use of natural resources for the benefits of the ordinary Ghanaian, the right of citizens to speak up and not be spectators: and above all the unprecedented unfulfilled plan and leadership commitment to fight corruption.”

Amidu disagreed with political opposition and commentators who suggested that Bawumia had distanced himself from President Akufo-Addo by proposing to scrap certain taxes.

“Bawumia’s vision is a repeat using a decoy to disguise a similar cajoling vision the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia team presented to the Ghanaian electorate at the 2016 elections.

“It is no different in form and substance from the deceptive vision team Akufo-Addo/Bawumia presented even at the 2020 elections when economic situations were exceedingly difficult.

“These visions have always been founded upon promises to ameliorate the harsh tax conditions the private sector and ordinary Ghanaians are facing daily in the marketplace,” he stressed.

  • Ministerial reshuffle does nothing to Bawumia’s electoral performance ahead of polls – UCC lecturer

Ministerial reshuffle does nothing to Bawumia’s electoral performance ahead of polls – UCC lecturer

A political analyst at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, has stated that the recent reshuffling by President Akufo-Addo in his government has no potential electoral benefits for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the President missed an opportunity to redeem the image of Vice President Dr. Bawumia.

“If it is a matter of a strategy for electoral victory, I think that it is not going to have any kind of impact.

“Strategy-wise, if you want to appeal to the middle class, this kind of reshuffle should have been situated within the speech that Dr. Bawumia gave. That’s the major change that he intends to make when he gets the opportunity to govern this country.

“…the President could have used this as more of an attempt to gain the credibility that Dr. Bawumia has lost back. The goodwill as far as Ghanaians are concerned back and the level of believability rise,” onuaonline.com quoted him to have said in an interview on TV3 on February 15, 2024.

While Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere acknowledged that the decision to replace sitting Members of Parliament and ministers who lost in the NPP parliamentary primaries might make sense on the parliamentary side, he was skeptical about its impact on the presidential election.

“If you keep supplying members of your party to occupy all these positions that have become vacant, this particular decision by the President will not in any way affect positively the electoral fortunes of Dr. Bawumia.

“Probably if you look at the parliamentary section, you could see that it is very political because those who have lost out and those who did not contest, they have nothing to lose, so why would they [the government] keep them? I think that one makes sense.

“When you are doing a reshuffle, you need to know the theoretical framework that you are operating with. What framework is the President operating? The most important agenda now is breaking ‘eight,’ so how does this reshuffle fit into the breaking eight agenda, and that, for me, I am of the view that it does not,” he explained.

Four senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are expected to be appointed as senior campaign advisors by the NPP presidential candidate and sitting Vice-President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The appointed advisors include Fred Oware, Peter Mac Manu, Anthony Karbo, and Sammi Awuku.

They are expected to bring their political and election campaign experience to Dr. Bawumia’s bid for the presidency.

These advisors are also considered key members of Dr. Bawumia’s inner circle, and their selection is seen as a strategic move to maintain a good blend of young NPP stalwarts and other top party officials in the campaign team.

Dr. Bawumia will present the list of his campaign team members to the National Executive Committee for consideration and approval.

“The list to be presented to NEC during its scheduled meeting on Monday will reflect the philosophy, strategy and focus of the NPP’s 2024 campaign,” said a source at the party headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.

Following the presentation of the list to NEC, and a meeting with other political heavyweights and dynamic individuals, it is expected that “Team Bawumia” will be announced. This team is anticipated to have a mix of experience and youth, aiming to provide the dynamism required for the tough battle ahead.

President Akufo-Addo’s recent radical reshuffle, announced on Wednesday (14 February), saw thirteen ministers and ten deputy ministers losing their jobs.

Additionally, eleven new deputy ministers and nine new ministers-designate were appointed, while five standing ministers and one deputy minister were reassigned. This reshuffle reduced the average age among Akufo-Addo’s government ministers to 47.

Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle won’t favor Bawumia in 2024 elections – Political Analyst

A political analyst at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, has expressed the view that the anticipated ministerial reshuffle by President Akufo-Addo may not be advantageous for the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the December 7 polls approaches.

Dr. Otchere made this assertion during an interview with Alfred Ocansey, the host of TV3’s current affairs program, Ghana Tonight, on Thursday, February 15.

“When you are conducting a reshuffle, you need to know the theoretical framework that you are operating with. What framework is the President operating under?” he questioned.

“The most important agenda now is breaking ‘eight,’ so how does this reshuffle fit into the breaking eight agenda, and that, for me, I am of the view that it does not,” he concluded.

According to Dr. Otchere, the President missed an opportunity to reduce government expenditures, a matter that has drawn criticism from civil society organizations and the public due to extensive spending and substantial borrowing.

“Probably if you look at the parliamentary section, you could see that it is very political because those who have lost out and those who did not contest they have nothing to lose so why would they [government] keep them, I think that one makes sense,” he added.

He suggested that the Vice President might gain some political advantages on the parliamentary side but not necessarily on the presidential side.

Dr. Asante Otchere highlighted that the decision to replace sitting MPs and ministers of state who lost in the NPP parliamentary primaries was reasonable and would not harm the party’s prospects.

“Perhaps, if you look at the parliamentary section, you could see that it is very political because those who have lost and those who did not contest have nothing to lose, so why would they [the government] retain them? I think that makes sense,” he added.

Dr. Asante Otchere further emphasized the importance of supporting reshuffle exercises with a theoretical framework and questioned the framework the president was operating under.

The Tap & Go Transport Initiative is aimed at helping to formalize the informal transport sector with the help of a well-structured and tested technology. This project will help to build a single system for the entire transport eco-system for all the various transport operators to enhance efficiency and bring about transport fare stability in Ghana.

We are by this statement inviting the media and duly informing the general public about the program.

    Thank you.

  • Bawumia’s brother unlawfully awarded GHC83.7M cocoa road contract – Ablakwa

Bawumia’s brother unlawfully awarded GHC83.7M cocoa road contract – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has provided documents that he believes implicate Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the violation of Ghana’s procurement laws.

According to Mr Ablakwa, recent reports by Auditor-General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, brought to Parliament shockingly reveal how a frightening 87% of cocoa road contracts since 2020 were awarded through a non-competitive process, and how there was no value for money with some of the contracts awarded at three-times the actual cost.

“The Auditor-General depressingly discovers that under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, COCOBOD non-competitively awarded 266 contracts valued at a staggering GHS13 billion which was 9.9 times more than the GHS1.3billion it budgeted for,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

According to him, one of the beneficiary companies is Resources Access Limited, owned by Abraham Bawumia (Bawumia’s brother) and Aneta Kaminska Bawumia who have familial ties with Vice President Bawumia.

Public Procurement Authority (PPA) documents he shared on the X platform reveal that on July 2, 2020, Resources Access Limited was handed two lucrative single-sourced cocoa road contracts valued at a fantastic GHS83.7 million.

The details of the two contracts are as follows: 1. Contract for upgrading of Effutu – Abrem Agona and Effutu – Sorodofo Feeder Road (21.39km – Central Region) awarded at GHS 54,262,878.84

    2. Contract for upgrading of Kyiboso Hasowodze Bungalow, Feeder Road (14.50km – Central Region) awarded at GHS29,468,546.54.

For Mr Ablakwa, it is hypocritical on the part of Dr Bawumia to attack former President John Mahama when he is directly benefiting from “loot and share schemes.”

“Who could ever have predicted that after Vice President Bawumia launched his scathing and vicious attacks on President John Mahama, the Bawumia family would one day be caught neck-deep directly benefiting from multiple over-priced, single-sourced, “create, loot and share schemes?” he quizzed.

On 23rd August, 2016, then NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo put out a tweet declaring that: “the era of sole sourcing will come to an end.” Later, Dr. Bawumia followed on September 8, 2016, stating emphatically: “overpricing of contracts through the use of sole sourcing is very typical of this John Mahama NDC government.”

He assured that Parliament is going to soon have an “explosive session” deliberating on the Auditor-General’s report.

Bawumia to reveal 2024 campaign team to NPP’s NEC on Feb. 19

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and current Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to present his campaign team list to the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday, 19 February 2024, for consideration and approval.

Sources from Asaase News indicate that Dr. Bawumia has been conducting extensive consultations within the party’s rank and file for the composition of his campaign team.

“The list to be presented to NEC during its scheduled meeting on Monday will reflect the philosophy, strategy, and focus of the NPP’s 2024 campaign,” one source at the party headquarters in Asylum Down said.

Following the presentation of the list to the NEC, “Team Bawumia” is expected to be announced, with a mix of political heavyweights and dynamic individuals. This comes after President Akufo-Addo announced a significant reshuffle, reducing the average age of his government to 47.

Key personalities expected to be named in Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team include Dan Botwe, Justin Frimpong Kodua, Frederick Opare-Ansah, Kwabena Agyepong, Nana Akomea, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Anthony Karbo, and Krobea Asante. The team is expected to blend experience with youth, reflecting the challenges ahead and the dynamism required for the campaign.

Bawumia and Idris Elba join efforts to propel Ghana’s creative arts industry

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia engaged in a fruitful meeting with renowned actor Idris Elba and his team to explore strategies aimed at improving financial inclusion within Ghana’s creative arts sector.

The meeting, hosted at the Jubilee House, focused on the creative arts economy in Africa, emphasizing the importance of integrating Ghanaian artists into the global financial ecosystem.

Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of providing opportunities for Ghanaian creatives to monetize their talents and receive equitable compensation for their work, especially on the international stage.

A key point of discussion was the proposed implementation of a novel financial system leveraging blockchain technology. This innovative system seeks to empower African artists by enabling global payments for their music and arts, irrespective of their location or the commercial use of their work.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized Ghana’s advanced digital payments infrastructure as a crucial factor for the potential success of this initiative. He expressed confidence that the system, slated for launch later this year, will open doors for Ghanaian creatives to flourish globally.

The Vice President extended his appreciation to Idris Elba for his dedicated efforts in advancing the African creative arts economy.

There is no difference; voting for Bawumia is as voting for Akufo-Addo – Lecturer

A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Professor Kobby Mensah, has countered suggestions that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would bring a distinct leadership style compared to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In an interview on Neat FM on Thursday, February 15, 2024, Prof. Mensah asserted that he perceives no disparity between Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, and President Akufo-Addo, despite the vice president’s articulation of his vision for the country.

He emphasized that, based on the information presented, he did not observe any noteworthy differences that would lead him to believe Dr. Bawumia intends to chart a distinct course from that of President Akufo-Addo if he assumes the presidency.

“… there is no difference, there is no difference. They are the same. If you vote for Bawumia, you are voting for Akufo-Addo – they are the same.

“Because when you say you’re coming with your own vision, it is not the programme you mention that would make us see the differentiation. It is your attitude, and the underlining philosophy of the programme you are mentioning that would make me see that you are different,” he said in Twi.

He highlighted that the differentiation should not only be based on the programs mentioned but also on the attitude and underlying philosophy of those programs.

Prof. Mensah noted that Dr. Bawumia’s speeches and flamboyancy have not demonstrated a significant shift from his previous support for Nana Addo, indicating that he has not witnessed a fundamental change in vision.

Prof Mensah added, “Bawumia hasn’t changed the flamboyancy he used to support Nana Addo. I didn’t see any difference between his speech in 2015 and the one he had recently for me to believe that, indeed, he is carrying a new vision. What did he say? You are here talking about AI and the likes, flamboyancy, and he has not achieved any of his promises.”

  • Ofori-Atta sacked to become Bawumia’s running mate?

Ofori-Atta sacked to become Bawumia’s running mate?

President Akufo-Addo has unveiled significant changes to his ministerial team in a major cabinet reshuffle, responding to growing calls for a shake-up.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, President Akufo-Addo kicked the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta out of government.

This follows months of cries from members of the general public to fire Mr Ofori-Atta over the bad state of the Ghanaian economy. A group of NPP MPs in 2023 led the calls for the removal of the Finance Minister.

President Akufo-Addo noted that he would consider their request after the Minister secures an external credit facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It has been over nine months since Ghana secured its loan, and finally, President Akufo-Addo has answered the prayers of many Ghanaians.

But after his removal, there are unconfirmed reports indicating that the Finance Minister has been sacked in order to be selected as the running mate for the NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“If I tell you Ken Ofori-Atta is going to be Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, Will you believe ? Well wait for the announcement,” a user asked.

Shortly after Dr Bawumia was elected flagbearer of the NPP in November 2023, a list purportedly unveiling a roster of individuals eyeing the Vice President slot emerged on social media.

The unverified compilation consisted of names like Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta; Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu; Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.

It has been over two months, and Dr Bawumia is yet to announce his running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Many have been in support of a Bawumia-Napo ticket in order to enable the NPP secure massive votes in the Ashanti Region, their stronghold.

President Nana Akufo-Addo is reportedly facing internal party pressures to accept Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of choice for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

This is according to IMANI Africa’s Vice President, Bright Simons, who also asserts that the president is also allegedly dealing with growing calls from within the NPP for a possible ministerial reshuffle ahead of the upcoming elections.

The situation has sparked conversations about potential changes in key positions within the government.

Mr Simons, took to Twitter to highlight the growing tensions within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to Simons, the President is being urged to consider specific actions:

    1. Sacrifice Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to strengthen Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s electoral standing.
    2. Accept Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Bawumia, despite facing resistance.
    3. Remove some top ministers perceived as distant from grassroots sentiments.
  • Don’t wait till 2025, support our private member’s bill to remove harsh taxes – Minority to Bawumia

Don’t wait till 2025, support our private member’s bill to remove harsh taxes – Minority to Bawumia

Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators will push for the removal of some nuisance taxes through a private member’s bill.

This decision comes after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia pledged to abolish several taxes, including the electronic transactions levy, emissions tax, and the proposed 15 percent Value Added Tax on electricity.

Dr. Forson expressed that if Dr. Bawumia is sincere about his intentions, the NPP MPs will support the private member’s bill when it is introduced on the floor of Parliament.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on February 13, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson argued that the majority’s position on the matter will confirm whether or not the NPP flagbearer was honest about his intentions to abolish certain taxes.

“All the taxes that we have opposed, we will make an attempt to get the government to remove them.

“In fact, now that the Vice President himself has come to confirm to us that they don’t want the taxes, we have already said on the floor, he is only copying what the NDC is saying.

“I have said on the floor and the hansard will bear me out that the next NDC government will remove this [taxes]. I have said this. I am the first person,” he said.

When asked why he would not wait for the next NDC to remove these taxes, the Minority leader said “Why should we wait? Ghanaians are struggling.

“The only reason why this tax is still effective and your good self and my good self and the ordinary Ghanaian is paying this tax is that the NDC is not in office.”

Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that the NDC is more concerned about the welfare of the populace than the governing party. Therefore, if they were to win office, they would prioritize scrapping all taxes that have overburdened the population in their first few months in office.

“In fact, if the NDC is in office and if Ghanaians vote for us, by December, our first budget before Easter, we will remove all these taxes. But now we are not in office. This is a government that is in office; they have said that they will remove it in 2025. To show good faith to the people of Ghana, we urge them to come and remove it.”

“We have to compel them and that is what it is. We have to compel them to remove these taxes because it is not easy,” he added.

It is not possible to separate Akufo-Addo and Bawumia; they are like siamese twins – Edem Agbana on accountability

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, insists that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot escape responsibility for President Akufo-Addo’s perceived shortcomings.

Mr Agbana argues that as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has been a crucial part of the Akufo-Addo administration and should be held accountable for the economic challenges faced under the New Patriotic Party’s governance.

He emphasized that any attempt by Dr. Bawumia to evade accountability would be futile, as he and President Akufo-Addo are inseparable in this regard.

“The president who was supposed to assign him (Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia) told the good people of Ghana that because of his economic wizardry, I allowed him to run the economy. So every good thing we have achieved, give him the credit.”

“Then, all of a sudden, the abysmal performance they have spent seven years defending, he (Dr Bawumia) is running away from it but let’s tell him that he can’t run away. He and President Akufo-Addo are conjoined or Siamese twins. They simply can’t be separated,” he told the media.

  • Bawumia’s small-scale mining policy is a game-changer – Deputy Lands Minister

    Bawumia’s small-scale mining policy is a game-changer – Deputy Lands Minister

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources responsible for Mines, Hon. George Mireku Duker, has provided extensive insights into the policy strategy of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the small-scale mining sector.

He characterized it as a groundbreaking strategy with the potential to revolutionize Ghana’s mining industry.

Speaking at a press engagement on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Hon. Mireku Duker meticulously outlined Dr. Bawumia’s mining policy, expressing his strong belief in its capacity to transform the mining sector, particularly the small-scale mining segment.

He explained that the strategy is anchored on two thematic areas, which are “ushering Ghana into a Golden age for the maximization of the benefits from our natural resources like gold, lithium, bauxite, and so on. The key to doing this is value addition and Ghanaian ownership; and establishing a new paradigm in natural resource contracts. “

George Mireku Duker highlighted that the 18-point policy document aims to formalize, regularize, and environmentally sustainably regulate small-scale mining. This approach is intended to promote the growth and expansion of the sector.

He noted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is well aware of the socio-economic potential of environmentally friendly and profitable small-scale mining.

“We will Formalize, regularize and regulate environmentally sustainable small scale mining. About one million people are engaged in small scale mining. Our goal would be to help grow small scale mining companies into large scale companies with capacity building and assisting them to access financing to acquire equipment. We can create many millionaires in the small scale mining industry if we support them.”

To achieve this goal, Mr. Mireku Duker highlighted that a government led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would establish a viable link within the entire value chain of the small-scale mining sector.

This link would enable small-scale miners to sell their gold to the Bank of Ghana, thus becoming part of the gold reserves of the central bank.

“We will support the Minerals Commission and key stakeholders to formalize the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector with the objective of ensuring that the activities of the entire value chain are sustainably and responsibly done so that most of the gold produced by this sector can be sold to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and be eligible to be part of the gold reserves of the central bank.”

Mr. Mireku Duker mentioned that under a Bawumia administration, the decentralization program initiated by the Akufo-Addo government regarding the Minerals Commission and Environmental Protection Agency would continue. This program aims to ensure that these institutions have a presence in all mining districts, facilitating the smooth administration of mining activities in the country.

He further stated that the successful Community Mining Scheme would be expanded to ensure its sustainability. Additionally, all small-scale miners would be required to register with the National Small Scale Miners Association.

“We will further deepen the decentralization of the minerals commission as well as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and ensure that they are present in all mining districts.”.

He assured that under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration, there would be a significant reduction in illegal mining activities through innovative ideas and policies. The administration would also take decisive action against miners who flout regulations.

Mireku Duker called on Ghanaians, especially those in the small-scale mining sector, to trust Dr. Bawumia to protect their jobs and eliminate the excesses that are harming both the industry and the country.

Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakari supported the Deputy Lands Minister’s statement, emphasizing that the Ministry’s efforts would create jobs for youth in the mining sector and promote knowledge transfer. She also highlighted that the Community Mining scheme would benefit many people in various communities.

  • Driver’s mate comment: Bawumia’s political strategists did an awful job – Prof Mensah

Driver’s mate comment: Bawumia’s political strategists did an awful job – Prof Mensah

Criticism has arisen over Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia‘s political strategy, with Professor Kobby Mensah, a lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of communication deployed by Bawumia’s team.

The critique, posted on X on February 7, 2024, highlighted the perceived failure in positively projecting the Vice President after his recent lecture outlining his vision if elected president.

Professor Mensah, a consistent critic of Bawumia‘s political candidature, pointed out a notable observation. Despite addressing various issues in his lecture, Bawumia’s statement regarding his role as not being in full charge of the government machinery gained more attention, particularly through the analogy of a driver’s mate.

This trend on social media overshadowed the substantive issues raised in the lecture.

The driver’s mate analogy served as Bawumia’s anchor, emphasizing that, if given the opportunity as president, he would carve out his distinct path. However, the aftermath of the statement saw Bawumia trending more for the analogy than for the crucial aspects of his vision.

In his critical post, Professor Mensah suggested that Bawumia’s political strategists should consider a pay cut for what he deemed an “awful job done.”

He emphasized that the Vice President could only trend as a “Mate,” and even the digitalization initiatives presented failed to gain substantial traction.

While supporters of the government defended Bawumia‘s analogy, asserting his influence in the Akufo-Addo administration, the opposition seized the opportunity to criticize the Vice President.

Accusations were hurled, alleging that Bawumia had distanced himself from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo due to perceived incompetence and political expediency.

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Bawumia gears up for the 2024 presidential elections, where he will compete against former President John Dramani Mahama. Having served as vice president since 2017, Bawumia aims to secure the presidency in 2025.

The critiques on his recent communication strategy have raised questions about the effectiveness of his campaign messaging.

  • Mahama initiated Mobile Money interoperability initiative – Sammy Gyamfi

Mahama initiated Mobile Money interoperability initiative – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, claims that the Mobile Money interoperability initiative, which began in 2016, was initiated under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Gyamfi, during the NDC/Mahama administration in 2016, a contract for the initiative was awarded to SIBTON by the Bank of Ghana.

Responding to the recent address by the 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at UPSA, Gyamfi called on the vice president to provide accurate information to Ghanaians.

In his public address, Dr. Bawumia praised Ghana’s growth in the mobile money market, crediting the Akufo-Addo government’s investments.

However, Sammy Gyamfi contradicts Bawumia’s statements, alleging that the vice president terminated an NDC-awarded contract and awarded it to associates.

Mr Gyamfi asserted that the first MOMO interoperability system contract was awarded to SIBTON in 2016 under the NDC/Mahama government.

He accused Bawumia of canceling this Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) contract and awarding a new one to his associate’s company.

Mr Gyamfi refuted Bawumia’s claim that the SIBTON contract was inflated by GHS4.6 billion, explaining that it was a BOT project where the company would charge normal user fees projected to be GHS4.6 billion over a 15-year period, inclusive of setup and operating costs.

Sammy Gyamfi stated, “On the contrary, the first MOMO interoperability system contract was awarded to a company known as SIBTON by the Bank of Ghana in 2016 under the visionary NDC/Mahama government. Bawumia only came to cancel this Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) contract under false pretenses and awarded a new contract to his crony company.

“The claim by Bawumia that the SIBTON contract was inflated by GHS4.6 billion is a lie. It was a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) project. Government was not going to spend a pesewa on it. Rather, the company was going to charge the normal user fees which was projected to be GHS4.6 billion over a 15-year period as their gross revenue, inclusive of their setup and operating cost.

He concluded by stating that even before the current government took office, MOMO interoperability had been conceived and initiated, with a contract signed for that purpose, and calls on Bawumia to stop spreading lies.

“Even before this BOT interoperability project, Ghanaians could send MOMO across networks through the TOKEN system that the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlements System (GhIPSS) Limited had provided. Remember the TOKEN MOMO SYSTEM? Clearly, even before this government took office, MOMO interoperability had been long conceived and initiated. A contract had been signed to that effect. Bawumia should stop the lies,” he concluded.

“I am not a promise and fail candidate” – Mahama

Presidential contender John Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized his commitment to avoiding exaggerated promises for political gain, particularly steering clear of across-the-board salary increases.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale during his ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together Tour,’ the former president stressed his preference for honesty in securing votes.

In addressing pre-tertiary teachers, Mahama stated, “I’ve said that the economy is in a big mess, so, I cannot promise everybody I’m going to increase salary and all that.”

He contrasted his approach with past promises made by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party, stating, “I won’t be like those dishonest people who came to promise heaven that they will build factories in every district, they’ll build a dam in every village, I’m not that kind of person.”

While acknowledging the economic challenges, Mahama refrained from committing to a salary increase.

Instead, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by pre-tertiary teachers and proposed solutions, such as providing accommodation in schools to encourage more teachers to reside on campus.

Bawumia’s proposed flat rate tax will reduce cost of spare parts – Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers

The Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has expressed support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposition to implement a flexible flat-rate tax system if he assumes the presidency.

In an official statement, the association endorsed the proposal, stating that it would benefit spare parts dealers nationwide and encouraged its members to back the initiative.

The association emphasized the commendable nature of the initiative, believing it would play a vital role in safeguarding the interests of spare parts dealerships throughout the country.

According to excerpts from the statement, the proposed flat-rate tax is anticipated to significantly lower the costs of spare parts, providing relief to commercial drivers who regularly factor these expenses into transport fares.

“The Association views this initiative as highly commendable and believes it will play a crucial role in safeguarding the interests of spare parts dealerships nationwide,” portions of the statement read.

“The proposed flat rate tax is poised to significantly reduce the cost of spare parts, providing much-needed relief to commercial drivers who routinely factor these expenses into transport fares.”

Dr. Bawumia unveiled this plan as part of his presidential vision on Wednesday, February 7, during a speech at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.

The Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association considers this action crucial and laudable for the welfare of spare parts retailers nationwide.

Bawumia’s flat tax regime welcomed by Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has thrown its weight behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposition to introduce a simplified flat tax system should he assume the presidency.

In a released statement, the association urged its members to support the initiative, believing it would greatly benefit spare parts businesses across the nation.

They highlighted that the proposed flat tax structure could lead to reduced costs for spare parts, offering relief to commercial drivers who frequently factor these expenses into their transportation fares.

Dr. Bawumia unveiled this proposal during a speech at the University of Professional Studies in Accra on Wednesday, February 7, as part of his presidential agenda.

The NPP flagbearer made this known when he announced that if elected president in the 2024 elections, he would introduce a flat tax regime for the collection of taxes.

According to him, the flat tax of percent of income for individuals and SMEs (which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana) will have appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor.

“With the new tax regime, the tax return should be able to be completed in minutes! We will also simplify our complicated corporate tax system and VAT regime,” he said.

Addressing the nation on his vision for Ghana while speaking at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra today, he stressed that there is a need to reform and refocus the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) towards broadening the tax base.

The Association views this initiative as commendable and crucial for the welfare of spare parts dealers nationwide.

  • Dr. Kwakye blasts BoG, Finance Minister and Bawumia for disregarding GH¢60.81 billion loss in 2022

Dr. Kwakye blasts BoG, Finance Minister and Bawumia for disregarding GH¢60.81 billion loss in 2022

Senior Economist and Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Dr. John Kwakye, has voiced criticism against the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for characterising the GH¢60.81 billion losses incurred by the Bank of Ghana in 2022 as merely “technical.”

In a published write-up, Dr. Kwakye emphasised that these significant losses reported by the Central Bank during the specified financial year would inevitably lead to cuts imposed on various operations.

Highlighting the tangible impacts, the IEA Director underscored how these losses are already affecting prevailing economic conditions in the country, including exchange rate stability and inflationary pressures.

“Dr. Bawumia said BoG’s action was responsible and that it was temporary, as the bank had advanced money to the government in only two of the past seven years. The Minister of Finance had expressed similar sentiments in the past, which was not surprising because the government was the direct beneficiary of the monetary financing,” he said.

Dr Kwakye continued, “However, as central bankers, we know that the most inflationary source of financing the budget is high-powered money coming directly from the central bank vault. It is not the fact that BoG advanced money to the government that is the issue, for the Bank’s Act provides for such advances up to 5% of the previous year’s revenue.

It is the magnitude of the advance—over 50% of the previous year’s revenue—that is disturbing. It is no wonder inflation peaked at 54.1% in 2022—and depreciation ballooned to 54.2% in November 2022, before falling to 30.0% in December 2022. Meanwhile, as government debt to BoG was also discounted under the DDEP, the Bank made a whopping loss of GH¢61 billion and a record negative equity of GH¢54 billion in 2022.”

He further contended that despite attempts by the Finance Minister and Central Bank Governor to downplay the extent of the losses, the country’s balance sheet suffered a severe blow.

“Both the Minister and the Governor seem to have played down the loss as only a technical one. However, the fact is that the bank’s balance sheet has been severely impacted, and this would force it to cut back on some of its important operations so as to save costs,” Dr Kwakye said.

“Trotro mates” furious with Bawumia for identifying as one to ‘escape’ public scrutiny over economic crisis

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent analogy involving drivers’ mates has stirred discontent among some in the profession, leading to preparations for a substantial demonstration.

Reports indicate that these drivers’ mates are displeased with Dr. Bawumia’s use of their role as an example.

Alhaji Amadu Bukari Sorogho, former Member of Parliament for Madina, disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Monday.

According to Sorogho, these drivers’ mates are planning a protest to distance themselves from Dr. Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The drivers’ mates feel that Dr. Bawumia’s analogy is damaging their reputation, prompting them to take action.

Despite their anger, Sorogho urged them to remain calm.

“Are you aware that mates in the country are angry at Bawumia and want to protest because he used them to set an example? They claim he is destroying their names but we are pleading with them to calm down” the NDC man asserted.

“A typical mate doesn’t qualify to drive even if your master travels for years but Bawumia acts as a President anytime Akufo-Addo is out of the country and so you see the confusion he has brought” he quizzed.

Furthermore, Alhaji Sorogho argued that if the Vice President considers himself a mate, then he is not qualified to be a driver.

He pointed out that a typical conductor does not meet the qualifications to drive, questioning Dr. Bawumia’s role as an acting president whenever President Akufo-Addo is out of the country, suggesting it has led to confusion.

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has voiced criticism against the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for characterizing the GH¢60.81 billion losses reported by the Bank of Ghana in 2022 as merely technical losses.

The economic researcher contends that these losses will necessitate reductions in crucial operations of the Bank as it seeks to manage costs.

In an article titled “Dr. Bawumia’s Speech: Turning an Impossibility into the Possibility?”, Dr. Kwakye pointed out that one immediate consequence of these losses is the fluctuating inflationary figures witnessed in the country.

Dr. Kwakye disputed Dr. Bawumia’s assertion that the Bank of Ghana’s actions were responsible and temporary.

“Dr. Bawumia said BoG’s action was responsible and that it was temporary, as the Bank had advanced money to Government in only two of the past seven years. The Minister of Finance had expressed similar sentiments in the past, which was not surprising because Government was the direct beneficiary of the monetary financing.

“However, as central bankers, we know that the most inflationary source of financing the budget is high-powered money coming directly from the central bank vault. It is not the fact that BoG advanced money to Government that is the issue, for the Bank’s Act provides for such advances up to 5% of the previous year’s revenue. It is the magnitude of the advance—over 50% of the previous year’s revenue—that is disturbing. It is no wonder inflation peaked at 54.1% in 2022—and depreciation ballooned to 54.2% in November 2022, before falling bank to 30.0% in December 2022. Meanwhile, as Government debt to BoG was also discounted under the DDEP, the Bank made a whopping loss of GHS61 billion and a record negative equity of GHS54 billion in 2022.”

“Both the Minister and the Governor seem to have played down the loss as only a technical loss. However, the fact is that the Bank’s balance sheet has been severely impacted, and this would force it to cut back on some of its important operations so as to save costs.”

He highlighted that while it is not unusual for the Bank to advance money to the government, the magnitude of the advance—exceeding 50% of the previous year’s revenue—is concerning.

This, according to Dr. Kwakye, contributed to the spike in inflation and depreciation in 2022.

Despite attempts by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofor-Atta, and the Bank of Ghana to downplay the losses as technical, Dr. Kwakye emphasized that the Bank’s balance sheet has been significantly impacted. He argued that this impact would compel the Bank to scale back on crucial operations in order to cut costs.

Mahama ended ‘dumsor’ in 2016 – NDC to Bawumia

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s claim that the Akufo-Addo government successfully resolved Ghana’s power crisis, commonly known as dumsor.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during his address on Wednesday, February 7, as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He touted the current administration’s achievements, including the purported resolution of dumsor, attributing this accomplishment to a decisive and intentional government program.

“We started with a clear, decisive and deliberate program to, among other things, stabilise the economy, fix dumsor, fix the NHIS, fix the roads, clear the arrears, make education free and accessible, significantly enhance social protection for the vulnerable in society, industrialize our economy, tackle youth unemployment and empower farmers,” he stated.

In response, the NDC issued a press statement contesting Dr. Bawumia’s claims, insisting that the power crisis was actually addressed during the tenure of former President John Mahama.

They hailed Mahama as a nation builder, attributing the resolution of the power crisis to his administration.

Dismissing Dr. Bawumia’s assertion, the NDC urged Ghanaians to disregard it, stating that it is inaccurate.

“The visionary and experienced Nation Builder, President Mahama accepted responsibility for the problem and promised to fix it. Indeed, by 2016 he had comprehensively fixed DUMSOR and ended load shedding.”

  • Mahama has no credibility – Aide to Bawumia

Mahama has no credibility – Aide to Bawumia

Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, an aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has labeled ex-President, John Dramani Mahama has an individual who lacks credibility.

In an interview with TV3, Mr Khomeini pointed to the infamous Airbus scandal and bribery allegations as evidence, contending that Mahama’s credibility, particularly on matters of corruption, is severely compromised.

According to him, Mahama lacks integrity in the fight against corruption.

“I think that as somebody who passionately advocates for Mahama  he should be the last person to use the word credibility, especially on matters bothering corruption. Mr Mahama is the only politician I know at the highest level who is incurably corrupt, there is absolutely no doubt about that.

“In February 2009, according to the Federal Court report on the matter of the infamous Airbus scandal, the court established conclusively that Mr Mahama as early as February 2009  was in a constant email conversation with officials of Airbus.

His statement was in response to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who accused Dr. Bawumia of being a habitual liar.

Mr Gyamfi alleged that Bawumia deceived the public in 2016 and 2020 with falsehoods to secure victories for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, Mr Khomeini, countering these claims, criticized Mahama’s credibility, citing the infamous Airbus scandal and accusing him of receiving bribes.

He argued that Mahama’s reputation as a corrupt politician is well-established, both locally and internationally.

“We also have listened, after a series of investigations by the Special Prosecutor that it was established clearly that Mr Mahama was the man designated Government Official 1. It was this man who used the name of his brother as the intermediary to receive bribes worth 8 million dollars with a phony company registered in Spain that phony company took 3million dollars out of the money and remitted over 5 million dollars to Mr. Mahana.”

He added “Indeed, if we were in any democratic culture that works effectively, Mr Mahama should not be leading any political party into any elections. This is a man whose reputation as a corrupt man is known locally and internationally. In fact, in the BBC interview he was asked ‘Have you ever received bribes?’ he dilly-dallied and asked a counter question whether as a human being or as president.  When Dr Bawumia spoke at UPSA, he proudly declared that as a human being and as vice president he is not corrupt.”

He suggested that, given Mahama’s alleged involvement in corruption, he should not lead any political party in elections.

“It is very laughable that our friends in the NPP and Bawumia think that they can once again hoodwink the people with lies.

“Ghanaians are wide awake. The days when Bawumia could get away with his lectures as we saw in opposition which were full of lies, are gone. He got away with it in 2016 and in 2020, but they will not be third time lucky in 2024. The whole propaganda that he was the economic Messiah, and he had the magic wand has been exposed.“

The people have no confidence and trust in Bawumia, his people are faced with the challenge of marketing a candidate who is a chronic liar,” he said.

  • Bawumia has not disassociated himself from Akufo-Addo’s results – Miracles Aboagye

Bawumia has not disassociated himself from Akufo-Addo’s results – Miracles Aboagye

Presidential staffer, Miracles Aboagye, has opposed views claiming that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is distancing himself from the current NPP administration due to the current challenges with the economy.

National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has raised concerns over Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s attempts to distance himself from certain government policies.

In his view, both President Akufo-Addo and the vice president should be held accountable for the current challenges facing the country.

“How can Kabiru in one breath say that Bawumia was a mere agent and hence can not take liability or blame for the failures of Principal, yet in another breath they give Bawumia credit for the success of the Principal?

“Why is Bawumia being credited for one constituency one ambulance, agenda 111, why? Why is that the case? They are not saying that the credit should go to Akufo-Addo because Bawumia was a mere agent. Hypocrite, that is what they are,” he said on Joy FM’s Top Story on February 8.

Sammy Gyamfi’s remarks come in response to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s call for Ghanaians to elevate him from the role of a “driver’s mate” to that of a “driver.”

In reaction, Mr Aboagye in a post on X wrote, “No where and at no time has @MBawumia disassociate himself from his government. That assertion only exists on NDC Platforms. Mahama says I wasn’t the Driver but the spare Driver. Bawumia says I am not the Driver but the Mate.”

He also criticised former President John Mahama by comparing him to a spare driver who is essentially idle and inactive.

This comes after an old video featuring former President John Dramani Mahama describing himself as a “spare driver” resurfaced, adding fuel to the ongoing debate sparked by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s analogy of being a “driver’s mate” in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

Dr Bawumia, in a recent statement on his plans for Ghana as a presidential candidate, likened his role as vice president to that of a driver’s mate but emphasized that if elected President in 2024, he would be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority.

The emergence of the old video has intensified the debate, with both Mahama and Bawumia being presidential candidates for the 2024 elections. Critics argue that Bawumia’s analogy was an attempt to distance himself from the failures of the current government, while Mahama’s supporters contend that Mahama took responsibility for his role in the Mills-led government.

In the 2012 video taken during a presidential debate organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Mahama, who succeeded late President John Atta Mills, urged Ghanaians to vote him as president for his second and final term, portraying himself as the “spare driver” completing Mills’ unexpired term.

“The NDC government has done a lot in four years. Our constitution gives our president two terms, take it that I am the spare driver, caretaker or whatever; Prof. Mills of blessed memory started the process, and I am finishing his unexpired term. I believe that the NDC government deserves a second term to be able to build on the foundation it has laid in these four years, and I am certain that Ghanaians would vote for me and turn me from the spare driver that I’ve been described as, into the actual driver of the bus leading us into the destination that we want to go to,” he stated.

In reaction, Mr Aboagye in a post on X wrote, “A spare driver is that back up driver who does nothing but whose role is only to wait for the moment the driver is indisposed/unavailable then he can take the driver’s place. This understanding is basic and doesn’t need further explanation.

“A Drivers mate cannot drive the car for the journey. Like we experience in our Ghanaian setting, the best the mate can do in terms of touching the steering wheel is to park it well or take it to the washing bay close by.”

He noted that Mahama has corroborated the surmise that the Vice President role is not as effective as being assumed.

“Clearly, Mahama supports the constitutional view that, the Vice President’s is never the Driver. Mahama has just been caught in the usual double standards and that explains your plenty twists. But we understand , we don’t need your explanation.”
