Don’t become agents of destruction this election year – Bawumia to youth

Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is urging the youth not to allow themselves to be used to perpetrate electoral violence.

This call comes ahead of Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

In previous years, Ghana’s elections have been marred by violent clashes between opposing factions, often involving the younger generation. These clashes have led to deaths, property destruction, and have affected the country’s political stability.

Dr. Bawumia is urging Ghanaians to uphold peace and tolerance towards each other to promote unity in the diverse political landscape as the country prepares for the upcoming polls.

Speaking at Thursday’s Eid prayers in the Ashanti region, the Vice President emphasized the importance of embracing a violence-free election.

“As we enter the campaign season for the elections in December, let’s all be guided by acts that will preserve and uphold the diversity of our country and its unity.

“To the youth, you are the nation’s most valuable asset and under no circumstances should you be forced into any form of electoral violence. Ghana needs you safe, active and lively to lead the nation’s charge in the promising fourth industrial revolution.

“Let’s all say no to all forms of electoral violence,” he said.

Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, has urged the Muslim community to embrace a sense of nationalism as emphasized in the Holy Qur’an.

“Prophet Mohammed emphasized his love for Mecca, but the people rejected him. Love your country and avoid anything that would cause violence,” he said.

After thirty days of fasting and devotion to Allah, the Muslim community in the Ashanti region celebrated the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan with prayers and festivities.

Muslims expressed gratitude to Allah for the strength and guidance they received during the fast, which fostered a sense of compassion and generosity among them.

Some members of the community also expressed gratitude for the New Year and urged fellow Muslims to continue living in holiness even after Ramadan.

“Let’s all live a pious life even after the Holy month of Ramadan. Let’s continue to abide by the tenets of Islam,” one of the celebrants said.

Let us make Bawumia Ghana’s first Muslim President – New Juaben South MP

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has encouraged the Muslim community to seize the opportunity to elect the first Muslim President in Ghana’s history.

Addressing the historical dominance of Christian presidents since independence, Okyere Baafi emphasized the importance of supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the presidency as the first Muslim president.

“In the history of Ghana, we have not had a Muslim president. The Vice President says he wants to set a record for you, so it is our responsibility. So this year’s election is not about NDC and NPP; it is about your own Muslim brother. So the Vice President says I should tell you he is your brother. Since the days of Kwame Nkrumah to President Nana Akufo Addo, all the presidents we have had were Christians. We have not had a Muslim leader, so this year elect him as a Muslim to be President to spearhead unity and development for Ghana to prosper.”

Okyere Baafi added, “We Christians accept that you Muslims have helped us elect Christian Presidents for a very long time, so it is now your turn to help yourself so that we join you in electing a Muslim leader.”

Amidst calls for peace ahead of the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the MP emphasized the need for unity and peaceful participation in the democratic process.

The Eastern Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Yusif Amudani, warned against the political exploitation of Muslim youth for violence. He stressed the utmost importance of maintaining peace during the electoral period.

Mahama can make free SHS excel – Apaak

Member of Parliament for Builsa South and Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has urged Ghanaians to disregard Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s outdated assertions regarding the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy.

In a recent statement, Dr. Apaak emphasized that the FSHS initiative will continue to progress under John Mahama’s presidency, as he plans to collaborate with stakeholders to address any existing challenges.

Dr. Apaak criticized Dr. Bawumia and his associates for diverting attention from substantive issues to propagate baseless claims about Mr. Mahama’s intentions towards FSHS, which he deems unfounded and irrational.

He further highlighted discrepancies in Dr. Bawumia’s stance, pointing out that while the Vice President acknowledged the need for a review of the FSHS program to the IMF, he continues to mislead the Ghanaian public by insinuating that any review equates to cancellation.

Dr. Apaak underlined Mr. Mahama’s recent engagement with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), where he actively listened to concerns and pledged to work towards resolving them if elected.

This demonstrates Mr. Mahama’s commitment to enhancing the FSHS policy, contrary to allegations of its abolishment.

In addition, Dr. Apaak reiterated Mr. Mahama’s proposed measures to improve the FSHS program, such as decentralizing feeding arrangements and addressing infrastructure deficits in secondary schools.

Overall, Dr. Apaak affirmed his confidence in Mr. Mahama’s ability to strengthen and enhance the FSHS initiative through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, contrasting with what he perceives as misleading narratives from Dr. Bawumia’s camp.

    READ THE FULL STATEMENT BELOW

STATEMENT: IGNORE THE STALE LIE – FSHS WILL THRIVE UNDER JDM
    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

For the information of DMB and his camp, JDM held a very successful meeting with the leadership of CHASS on how to address the challenges affecting teaching and learning in our secondary schools on April 8th, 2024.

Why would JDM waste precious time by engaging the heads of our secondary schools to discuss how to resolve challenges bedevilling the implementation of the FSHS policy if he intends to cancel FSHS?

At the meeting, JDM listened to the long list of challenges narrated by the heads of our secondary schools and promised to work with them to address their raised concerns when he gets the nod. He restated his intention to convene a national stakeholders forum to deliberate on the FSHS Programme as a first step towards reviewing it to make it better.

JDM’s position on the decentralisation of the feeding arrangements in our secondary school system to ensure that feeding grants go directly to schools to procure food for students, was welcomed.

Equally, his promise to end the obnoxious double track system by completing uncompleted structures and adding new ones, to increase educational infrastructure also received commendation.

If DMB is honest and worth his salt, he should tell Ghanaians that the current government he is a part of told the IMF that the FSHS Programme will be reviewed and rationalised.

The duplicity of DMB is affirmed by the fact that he, the vice President, was captured in the said report, dated January 2024, as the highest government official who represented government during the review meeting with the IMF. Why was he comfortable telling the IMF the truth but continues deceiving Ghanaians, that review means cancel?

DMB should be bold enough to tell Ghanaians, that JDM was right in calling for a review of the FSHS Programme just as he represented government to admit to the IMF, as captured, on page 76 paragraph 47 of the first review of the IMF program.

Instead of DMB and his camp focusing on how to rescue their flopped campaign, they are busy pushing the stale and impotent lie, that JDM will collapse FSHS. No reasonable Ghanaian believes the nonsensical claim that JDM will cancel FSHS.

FSHS will thrive and blossom under JDM as President because he will work with stakeholders to fix the challenges.

I stand opposed to LGBTQ activities, we won’t accept it – Bawumia declares stance

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has strongly reiterated his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, emphasizing that the Islamic faith and other religions in the country are against such practices.

As a devout Muslim, Dr. Bawumia made it clear that he does not support or condone LGBTQ practices.

His statements come in response to calls from various quarters, particularly within certain Muslim communities, for him to clarify his position on the issue, especially as President Akufo-Addo has yet to sign a bill into law regarding this matter.

Speaking at the Kumasi Central Mosque in the Ashanti Region during the Eidul-Fitr prayers, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his firm stance against LGBTQ activities, stating that such practices would not be tolerated under his leadership.

“First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no “ifs” or “buts”. No shades of grey.”

“Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah.”

In February of this year, Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. This bill seeks to impose a minimum jail term of three years and a maximum of five years on individuals who engage in and promote homosexual activities in the country.

However, the bill has not yet been signed into law by President Akufo-Addo, as it is currently facing a challenge at the Supreme Court.

Bawumia is not bribing students with free tablets for votes – Campaign Team

The Campaign Team of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has defended the Government’s decision to distribute 3.1 million tablets to Free Senior High School (FSHS) students nationwide.

The Team stated that the tablets were essential learning materials designed to enhance teaching and learning in the SHSs, with the aim of improving students’ academic performance across the country.

It, therefore, rejected assertions that the distribution of the said tablets were “misplaced priority” and a “bribe” to lure the students into voting for the Government in the December polls.

“These tablets come in to provide textbooks, past questions, lesson videos and other educational resources to help teaching and learning and also greatly save cost for all,” Mr Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, said at a news conference, in Accra, on Tuesday.

Former President and Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, criticized the government’s ‘one student, one tablet’ initiative, labeling it as a “bribe” intended to secure the votes of students in the upcoming elections.

He questioned the government’s decision to purchase tablets when basic teaching and learning materials such as textbooks had not been provided for schools years after the curriculum was changed, describing the policy as a “misplaced priority”.

In response, Mr. Aboagye described the former President’s claims as “unfortunate” and “baffling”, questioning his morality to criticize the initiative given that he had attempted to roll out a similar project in 2016 when in power. He also pointed out that Mr. Mahama had promised in his 2020 Manifesto to distribute tablets to students.

“So, it is baffling how same former President labels distribution of tablets to free SHS beneficiaries as misplaced and a bribe for vote,” he said.

Mr. Aboagye highlighted the significant investment in the education sector since the current administration assumed office in 2017, emphasizing the priority the government has placed on education.

He mentioned that the government had systematically and deliberately worked to transform the sector at all levels. For example, at the kindergarten level, there has been heavy investment in equipping teachers with modern technologies to enhance early childhood development. Age-appropriate learning materials, play equipment, and resources for interactive and engaging learning experiences have also been provided.

Furthermore, through the GETFUND, the government is executing 1,270 infrastructural interventions with cutting-edge technology such as smart boards to widen accessibility and enhance interactive teaching and learning.

At the primary level, Mr. Aboagye noted that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration had implemented various interventions, including extensive training and capacity building for teachers, all aimed at empowering them.

“We have ensured the consistent provision of learning materials and embarked on targeted infrastructure upgrades to create conducive learning environments,” he touted.

Mr. Aboagye further explained that the implementation of the National Standardised Tests for Primary Two to Four students had improved learning outcomes. He noted that proficiency in reading among Primary Two pupils had significantly improved over the past nine years, from two per cent in 2015 to 38 per cent in 2022.

Regarding Junior High School education, Mr. Aboagye stated that the government had strengthened lower secondary education by constructing eleven model schools, each designed with modern amenities, which were currently at various stages of completion.

He also mentioned that through the Ghana National Digital Learning Project, the government was equipping students at the Junior High School level with digital skills to enable them to thrive in the global digital economy.

Mr. Aboagye further indicated that the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector had undergone comprehensive modernization and expansion. New state-of-the-art facilities were under construction, while existing ones were undergoing renovation and upgrading.

In the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, he noted that the government had completed the construction of 10 regional STEM centers to train a complete STEM pipeline from primary through Junior High School to Senior High School.

Mr. Aboagye assured that under a Bawumia-led government, the education sector would continue to witness improvement to develop human resources for development. Policies such as the Free Senior High School (FSHS) would be maintained if Dr. Bawumia was elected President in December 2024, to ensure that no one was left behind.

Trains acquired from Poland to start operations May ending

The Minister of Railways Development, John Peter Amewu, has revealed that the two recently acquired trains from Poland are set to commence operations by the end of May this year.

This initiation of commercial train operations underscores the government’s commitment to tangible enhancements in Ghana’s transportation networks.

“The government of President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia is spearheading a transformative agenda for Ghana’s railway sector, aimed at propelling the nation toward absolute advancements in transportation infrastructure,” John Peter Amewu stated.

He added that, “I am optimistic and committed to ensuring that the commencement of commercial train operations occurs before the conclusion of May, demonstrating our government’s dedication to delivering tangible improvements to our nation’s transportation systems.”

Mr Amewu’s remarks followed a visit by a delegation of Engineers from Pesa SA [Poland], who paid a courtesy call on him last week following the arrival of the state-of-the-art trains in Ghana. Their visit was focused on the assembly, testing, and operational preparedness of these trains to serve the country.

The initial units, comprising 12 modern passenger coaches, will undergo testing on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line. The second batch of trains is anticipated to be shipped in May this year and is slated to arrive in Ghana by August 2024.

Millions of cedis saved through Ghana’s digitalization drive – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has highlighted the significant cost-saving impact of digitalization in Ghana, citing examples such as the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Service Secretariat.

He revealed that SSNIT saved GH¢480 million by eliminating 29,000 ghost pensioners, while the National Service Secretariat eradicated 44,000 ghost workers, resulting in savings of over GH¢356 million.

Speaking at the launch of LEADing Justice in Accra, Vice President Bawumia expressed enthusiasm for the Chief Justice’s emphasis on digitization within the judiciary, acknowledging Ghana’s progress in this area.

“It is my hope that today’s event will herald a new dawn in the history of our judicial system propelled by efficiency, excellence, knowledge, and integrity.”

He commended the Chief Justice for bringing renewed focus and energy to the judiciary since taking office.

Bawumia emphasized the transformative power of digitalization, citing the dramatic increase in the proportion of individuals with Tax Identification Numbers after the introduction of the Ghana Card as an example.

He also highlighted the effectiveness of digital tools in combating corruption, such as the elimination of ghost workers at the Controller and Accountant General Office.

The Vice President stressed the importance of law, ethics, asset management, due process, and digitization as pillars of the judiciary’s image and advancement.

“When we digitalized and gave everyone a Ghana Card and made the decision to make the Ghana Card Tax Identification number, we increased the proportion of individuals with Tax ID, the number moved from four per cent to 85 per cent just like that.

“We have also seen through digitalization that you can deal with corruption. We have eliminated ghost workers at the Controller and Accountant General Office just by using the Ghana Cards because the ghosts don’t have fingerprints.”

He lauded the positive impact of e-systems in improving the administration of justice, citing his personal involvement in launching a case tracking system in 2018.

Bawumia called on all Ghanaians to support the Chief Justice’s vision for the judiciary, emphasizing the government’s commitment to investing in court infrastructure, residential accommodation for judges, and human resource development to enhance justice delivery.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, praised the Chief Justice’s innovative approach in launching her vision for justice delivery, describing it as bold and transformative.

President of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr. Yaw Acheampong Boafo, expresses confidence in the Chief Justice’s leadership and anticipates transformative changes benefiting all stakeholders in the judiciary.

A trader at Dome Market has entreated her colleagues and the entire citizenry to rally their support behind the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to Ohemaa Fosua (also known as Ohemaa Shatta), the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nothing novel to offer as its presidential candidate, John Mahama, once governed the country.

She believes the ideal step to take is to give Dr Bawumia the mantle to lead and continue the good works done by President Akufo-Addo such as the Free Senior High School policy.

She also threw her support for Mike Oquaye Junior ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Naa Torshie Addo is the ideal running mate for Bawumia – Ralph Agyapong

A legal representative and brother of Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has endorsed Irene Naa Torshie Addo as the ideal female candidate to partner with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the December elections.

Ralph Agyapong believes that Kennedy Agyapong would endorse Irene Naa Torshie Addo as well if the party decides to choose a woman as the running mate for the NPP flagbearer.

“I am not biased when it comes to the choice of a woman but if you put your ears to the ground, you will hear testimonies about how she receives people who approach her warmly. I know she and my brother (Kennedy Agyapong) may have some minor issues but if you put up a list of the female contenders he will tell you his choice is Irene,” he told Kwame Nkrumah Tikese of Okay FM in an interview.

Ralph Agyapong highlighted Irene Naa Torshie’s impeccable human relations and age as factors that would give her an advantage over other potential female candidates as a running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has yet to announce his choice for a running mate for the 2024 general elections. Among the potential candidates are several male and female party stalwarts, including Irene Naa Toeshie Addo, who currently serves as the Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund.

There is a growing campaign for Dr. Bawumia to select a female candidate as his running mate, following the choice made by his main contender, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, who selected Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.

However, Ralph Agyapong emphasized that the party should not feel pressured into choosing a female running mate solely because of the opposition’s decision.

Mahama will win 2024 elections – Global InfoAnalytics

A recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics suggests that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, is leading ahead of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the poll, John Mahama secured 54.3 percent, while Dr. Bawumia garnered 34.6 percent.

The leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, obtained 7.5 percent, whereas Nana Kwame Bediako of the New Force polled 2.3 percent.

“In the Ashanti region, 86% of NPP voters intend to vote for DMB, AKK, 7%, 4% for JDM and 1% NKB. For NDC voters, 98% for JDM, 1% for DMB, 1% for NKB. Among floating voters, 38% for DMB, 20% for JDM, 22% for AKK and 4% NKB. However, among those who did not disclose their party affiliations, 28% for DMB, 21% JDM, 14% AKK and 2% for NKB,” Global InfoAnalytics wrote on the X platform .

However, in response to the poll findings, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has expressed reservations about the methodology employed.

“The value that we place on the outcome of this survey cannot be inclusive to the people of this country because the instrument itself can create problems due to people’s understanding of the questions asked.

“So therefore the answers they are giving, as to whether or not they are answering the question about the country moving in the right direction (which is relative when you translate into another language) is the issue.

“For me, the premium we should put on this should not be too high”.

Similarly, the founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about the election outcome based on a single poll.

He emphasized that significant shifts could occur between now and December 7, the election day, when Ghanaians cast their votes for both the president and Members of Parliament.

  • Asaki calls on Bawumia to set timelines for exchange rate policy

Asaki calls on Bawumia to set timelines for exchange rate policy

Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, has challenged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, to provide specific timelines for the implementation of his fixed exchange rate policy. This policy aims to ease forex pressure encountered by traders.

Dr. Bawumia, the incumbent Vice President, has outlined that this initiative, designed to improve the business environment at ports, will also help prevent the loss of port traffic to neighboring countries.

Addressing attendees during a town hall meeting with the Pharmaceutical Society and other Pharma Groups, the Vice President emphasized the importance of businesses, including those within the pharmacy sector, developing a competitive advantage to stimulate economic growth.

“We’re going to change the duty structure and go into more of a flat specific duty. If you have a 40-footer container, you know how much you are paying in cedis. So, you take the exchange rate out of the matter and deal with it.

“We are also going to make sure that our duties in ports by policy cannot be higher than in Lome, which is our competitor. And right now, there’s a lot of diversion of containers to Lome because ours are higher.”

However, in an interview on the New York-based Adinkra Radio Morning Show, Sampson Asaki Awingobit urged Dr. Bawumia to specify the exact timeline for implementing the policy once he assumes the presidency.

“Dr. Bawumia and the NPP said a lot of things before they came to power. They said they will make the Tema Port like the Lome Port but what did we see when they came to power, taxes upon taxes.”

Dr. Bawumia should give us timeless for implementation of the policies he’s trumpeting. He should tell us if he will implement it in his first, second or third year budget. He should make it clear to us. This time around we will not be deceived as we were in 2016 and 2020. The taxes he claims he will abolish when he comes to power, I bet you he can never abolish them. I challenge him, he should abolish them during the mid-year budget review in July.”

“Prior to coming to power in 2016, the NPP said they are business friendly people and they listen to business people and traders. They promised to take us out of taxes to production, and we were excited by that and Ghanaians went ahead to vote for them massively and Akufo-Addo won with over one million votes. Seven years down the line, all what we see is myriad of taxes introduced by this government which is killing many businesses some of which have folded up or relocated to neighboring countries,” he told Host Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang.

  • Ablakwa reveals how Bawumia’s manifesto committee member was dubiously awarded $18M deal

Ablakwa reveals how Bawumia’s manifesto committee member was dubiously awarded $18M deal

A member of the team responsible for drafting the manifesto for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia‘s presidential campaign, Razak Awudulai, has been revealed to have received a significant sweetheart deal worth Ghc250 million from the government.

Awudulai, reportedly a member of the 2024 Manifesto Committee for Dr. Bawumia, had his private company, Spectrum Fibre Limited, single-sourced by the government to construct a data solutions center that already exists.

The Public Procurement Authority (PPA), which single-sourced Spectrum Fibre Limited, stated that the company was to “build a Wide Network (WAN) Connectivity Services and Data Solution Centre for GHS’ 745 sites in all regions on an Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) basis for a 10-year period valued at a colossal US$18,480,125.00.”

However, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who intercepted the letter contracting Spectrum Fibre, noted that the services the PPA asked the company to provide already exist. Furthermore, Spectrum Fibre Limited has no known track record in the area of the project it has been contracted for.

In a statement addressing the revelations, Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa described the arrangement as a sweetheart deal orchestrated by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his government for a close associate.

“Digitalization has become the new conduit for mega looting of billions of taxpayer and donor funds through dubious, duplicative and deadly single-sourced procurements even as conditions in the health sector continue to deteriorate alarmingly.

“Seeing how lucrative the digitalization booty has been so far, a few more crony companies have been invited to the looting party apparently to come “bamba with the big boys” (all royalties paid to Goya Menor & Nektunez),” Hon. Ablakwa wrote.

Describing his efforts to combat corruption through personal vigilance as “Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (SOA) oversight,” the MP revealed that he intercepted documents dated 5th October, 2023, confirming the Public Procurement Authority’s (PPA) approval for the company owned by Razak, who is involved in “special duties” for Dr. Bawumia, to be awarded the contract.

According to the documents, the approval letter was signed by PPA Chief Executive, Mr. Frank Mante, and addressed to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye.

“The intercepted PPA letter grants the Ghana Health Service approval to single source Spectrum Fibre Company Limited to “build a Wide Network (WAN) Connectivity Services and Data Solution Centre for GHS’ 745 sites in all regions on an Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) basis for a 10-year period valued at a colossal US$18,480,125.00.

“At the current exchange rate, that is a staggering GHS245million,” Hon. Ablakwa wrote.

According to the MP, top officials within Ghana’s health sector that he has spoken with on conditions of anonymity have only expressed outrage over the contract because the  US$18.48million (GHS245million) contract is needless.

“These top deep-throat sources say what Spectrum Fibre has been handpicked to do are already contained in the massive US$100million (GHS1.3billion) contract also awarded under an opaque single-source procurement method in 2017 to Lightwave eHealthcare Solutions Limited.”

Already, he added, a similar single-sourced sweetheart deal with a company called Lightwave, has resulted in the colossal sum of GHS595,873,749.23.

“With over GHS595million already paid to Lightwave under this supposedly bankrupt economy, every patriotic Ghanaian would be on the side of these top officials within the health sector who are livid and have legitimately had enough of the needless duplication and reckless dissipation of resources for private gain in the name of digitalization.”

According to Hon. Ablakwa’s revelation, Spectrum Fibre was incorporated in 2017, a period coinciding with the Akufo-Addo government’s assumption of office. This period saw a surge in the establishment of companies by many NPP-affiliated individuals seeking state contracts.

The directors of Spectrum Fibre are Razak Awudulai and Fati Baba.

Spectrum Fibre Limited was incorporated on October 25, 2017, as shown in the attached incorporation details.

Despite being single-sourced for a project, Spectrum Fibre has no track record in carrying out the specific tasks they have been engaged for.

“Further checks reveal that the owner of Spectrum Fibre, Mr. Razak Awudulai is currently serving on Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 Manifesto Communications Committee. Insiders say he also carries out “special duties” for the Bawumia 2024 campaign.

“Mr. Razak Awudulai was also an appointee of President Akufo-Addo when he served as Managing Director of Go Energy, a subsidiary of GOIL in President Akufo-Addo’s first term. (See appointment letter attached).

“Further digging also reveal that Mr. Razak Awudulai is an MD of another digitalization company known as Broad Spectrum Limited which has been handed over millions of Ghana Cedis under questionable circumstances by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund,2 Hon. Ablakwa wrote.

Hon. Ablakwa highlighted that the Spectrum Fibre deal did not receive approval from the National Information Technology Agency (NITA). He emphasized that this contravenes Act 771 and disregards the Minister of Communications and Digitalization’s circular of 16th June, 2017.

“It is also to be noted that under the World Bank US$50million eTransform connectivity project, as many as 100 health facilities have already been captured which further exacerbates the wasteful and needless fears raised by stakeholders about the Spectrum Fibre deal.”

Mr Ablakwa has stated his intention to pursue legal action, including dragging those involved in the sweetheart deal to court, due to the legal breaches and wastage involved. He plans to immediately seek legal restraints to stop these blatant data protection violations.

    Then, he will also, “Petition the OSP on the corruption related aspects of this latest exposé; and Petition donor partners to carry out a forensic audit into all health digitalization projects being funded by them;

“file a motion in Parliament demanding a much broader bi-partisan enquiry into all digitalization projects. “

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has finally revealed the reason behind his sudden resignation describing it as the wisest choice he has ever made.

Speaking to journalists in Kumasi, the Suame MP disclosed that his main objective was to prevent discord within the majority faction in Parliament.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized that he holds no regrets regarding his resignation and is fully committed to ensuring the success of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming 2024 election.

He stated, “The major project ahead of us is breaking the eight and the project that I believe in is getting [Dr. Mahamudu] Bawumia elected as the president of this country and I don’t want to be part of anything that will obstruct that or negatively impact that, I don’t want to be part of it. I don’t want to be the eye of the storm and so I think it was the best decision I took.”

Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, celebrated his 80th milestone on March 29, 2024, with a series of celebratory events, including a Thanksgiving Service.

New footage from President Akufo-Addo’s lavish Thanksgiving Service has surfaced.

Broadcasted by UTV on April 6, 2024, the footage captures the birthday honoree, Akufo-Addo, alongside Vice President and NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and key figures of the party, participating in the service.

The event was graced by the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo; the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia; Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema-Osei Opare; Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum; and the former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.

“He will go straight to hell” – Butcher ‘curses’ Bawumia-Akufo-Addo govt over meat price hike

A tweet from user @KyeiMeshack on X (formerly Twitter) captures a butcher expressing frustration over the current state of the economy and the rising prices of mutton, chevon, and beef.

Responding to a customer’s inquiry about the soaring meat prices, the butcher attributed the situation to what he described as the incompetence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer and vice president, as well as the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo government.

Expressing dismay over the drastic price hike, the butcher highlighted the significant increase in the cost of meat, from GHS 16 per pound in 2016 to the current price of GHS 30.

“Thanks to Nana Addo and Bawumia’s lies. The lies are now getting out of hand. Its too much. A pound of boneless in 2026 was 12 cedis but today it is 30 cedis”, he fumed.

He directed his anger towards Vice President Bawumia, accusing him of deceiving Ghanaians with numerous false promises and policies.

He said, “In 2016, you would get a well-looking cow at GHS 1000 but today it is a whopping GHS 10k and even more. Nana and Bawumia have messed up big time, they have destroyed the economy completely.”.

He expressed his willingness to judge Bawumia and Akufo-Addo:

“If God doesn’t judge them well, he should allow me to judge him, he tells lies too much. His bald head is like the sole of someone’s shoe. He will go straight to hell” he stated.

Bawumia expresses desire for Ghana to become leading pharmaceutical center in West Africa

Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, addressed the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, revealing his plans to establish Ghana as a pharmaceutical hub in the West Africa sub-region by next year.

In a meeting held in Accra on Monday, Dr. Bawumia engaged with key stakeholders to elaborate on his vision for the industry and the country.

He emphasized his goal of leveraging Ghana’s comparative advantage to position it as a leading pharmaceutical hub in West Africa.

“The gains will be huge for Ghana and we have to do it because we have a comparative advantage,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“But first we need to support it with financial resources,” added the NPP flagbearer, stressing the need for strong political will and significant funding.

The NPP flagbearer also explained how his proposed tax reforms, including tax amnesty and flat tax rate for businesses, will help the industry.

In his quest to transform the pharmaceutical industry under his government, Dr. Bawumia identified the development of human resources, as one of the key areas he will focus on.

“There are many aspects if we want to be the best and human capital is one. Without that, we cannot be the best so we also have to invest in the training of pharmacists in Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“It should be possible for us to establish a pharmaceutical training centre to focus on training more pharmacists, which will impact positively on our quest to be the best in West Africa.”

As part of his government’s vision to support the training of pharmacists, Dr. Bawumia said his government will prioritise scholarships for students pursuing pharmacy.

The NPP flagbearer also spoke of the need for a pharmaceutical park in Ghana to boost the industry.

On the operations of pharmacies in Ghana, Dr. Bawumia gave an update on e-pharmacy – the nationwide online platform for pharmacies in Ghana, which he spearheaded its creation.

He said, so far, about 2500 pharmacies have been onboarded on the platform and he assured that the digitalisation of the pharmaceutical industry will be further strengthened under his government.

“We’re going to change the duty structure and go into more of a flat specific duty” – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his commitment to improving the business environment at ports by introducing fixed exchange rates.

This measure is aimed at easing forex pressure on traders and reducing the risk of losing port traffic to neighboring countries.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with the Pharmaceutical Society and other pharmaceutical groups, the Vice President emphasized the importance of businesses, including those in the pharmacy industry, developing a competitive edge to drive economic growth.

During a conversation on the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Kow Donkor, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, expressed confidence that the issues raised by society members would be tackled, offering relief to its members.

“We know the oil industry; the Bank of Ghana makes available the US dollars for their imports, pharmaceutical industry and medicines are also special items. When you have a shortage of medicines, that becomes a national security issue.

“If the central bank is going to make funding available at a special rate for the pharmaceutical importers and manufacturers, it will also go a long way to stabilize the prices.”

  • Ghana will prosper again under Bawumia – Rev. Ntim Fordjour

Ghana will prosper again under Bawumia – Rev. Ntim Fordjour

Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has called for the avoidance of religious stereotypes within Ghana’s political realm, stressing that God appoints leaders without bias and for specific periods in the lives of his people.

In a recent statement posted on his platform, the Assin South Member of Parliament (MP) expressed his confidence that Ghana would flourish under the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s flagbearer, if elected President in the forthcoming December 2024 elections.

Rev. Fordjour asserted Dr. Bawumia’s potential to excel as a president compared to the National Democratic Congress’ flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

“Yesterday I joined the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to cut sod for the construction of 4 storey, 200-bed capacity hostel for Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra. The contribution of Christian institutions to Ghana’s development was acknowledged by His Excellency Dr Bawumia as enormous and therefore envisions stronger partnerships with faith-based institutions under his tenure to propel the nation’s progress.”

He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s acknowledgment of the significant contribution of Christian institutions to Ghana’s development and envisioned stronger partnerships with faith-based institutions under his tenure to drive the nation’s progress.

“Let us eschew religious stereotyping in politics, as God is no respecter of persons. God will prosper Ghana under the Presidency of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” the Deputy Minister tweeted.

Rev. Fordjour’s remarks seemingly addressed independent presidential candidate Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s comment, advocating for Ghanaians to elect a Christian president given the country’s Christian majority.

Speaking at the Dr. Thomas Wyatt Assembly for the Church of Pentecost’s Easter Sunday Convention, Mr. Kyerematen emphasized the importance of selecting a Christian leader who embodies Christlike qualities, positioning himself as an ideal candidate.

“If God touches your heart and you vote for Alan Kyrematen, the transformative leader, then I can assure you, as our Lord Jesus did on the cross, promise that ye shall be in paradise with him; you shall also be in paradise when I come into power,” he added.

Criticism from members of both major parties ensued, condemning the comments as a violation of the religious freedom and tolerance Ghana has cherished over the years.

  • Negative social media criticism directed at Bawumia drops by 13% – Report

Negative social media criticism directed at Bawumia drops by 13% – Report

A recent report from IMANI Africa, a renowned think tank, has highlighted a significant decrease in negative discourse surrounding the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the report, there has been a notable 13% reduction in negative references to Dr. Bawumia on social media between February and March 2024.

This analysis, part of the Public Understanding and Literacy for Sentiment and Election (PULSE) report by IMANI Africa, provides insightful observations into sentiments expressed across various social media platforms.

During the period from February 26 to March 26, 2024, the NPP witnessed a rise in positive sentiment, climbing from 10.22% to 10.71%.

Conversely, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) experienced a decrease in positive sentiment on social media, dropping from 10.22% to 9.50% during the same timeframe.

IMANI Africa’s analysis encompassed a comprehensive examination of selected social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, various web platforms, TikTok, Podcasts, and Newsfeeds.

The objective was to assess prevailing sentiments regarding key political contenders for the upcoming election and identify influential trends and individuals shaping social media discourse.

The report stated, “The sentiments are of three values, i.e. positive, negative and neutral. All these are also collated and analyzed to determine the language, tone of comments and tweets, and tone of commentary and posts related to both candidates.

“NPP has taken a lead in positive sentiment on the social media posts monitored. The NDC has dropped from 10.22% to 9.50% while the NPP increased marginally to 10.71% from 10.22%. Public negative sentiment has significantly dropped for both, with NPP having an almost 13% drop in negative sentiment,” part of the report stated.

“… The sentiments of NDC fell from 10.22% to 9.5% over the period. NDC took a marginal hit in its positive sentiments for the period, meaning that with NPP’s relative gain of 10.71%, the shift in sentiments is almost of the same magnitude, although NDC’s drop is about 0.2% more. This means that there could be more positive mentions of the NPP on social media than before,” the report added.

  • FLASHBACK: Mahama is a very good magician who makes our money disappear – Bawumia

FLASHBACK: Mahama is a very good magician who makes our money disappear – Bawumia

The 2024 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in 2016 stated that Ghanaians no longer desire a ‘dead goat’ for a President.

He described a ‘dead goat’ as a President who is indifferent to the hardships and sufferings that citizens endure daily.

Speaking at the NPP’s Volta Regional Rally in Aflao, Dr. Bawumia criticized the government of former President Mahama for exacerbating the plight of ordinary Ghanaians. He highlighted the unprecedented level of unemployment under President Mahama’s administration.

Dr. Bawumia noted that despite having more revenue, including loans and taxes, than all previous governments combined, President Mahama’s government failed to pay nursing and teacher training allowances. Additionally, the government owed hospitals several months of NHIS claims.

“They cannot pay for School Feeding, they cannot pay for Mass Cocoa Spraying. The National Youth Employment Programme has collapsed under their watch and they cannot pay contractors. That is why we are saying they are an incompetent government,” he said.

According to Dr. Bawumia, with Ghanaians desperately yearning for their problems to be solved, “he (President Mahama) tells us he’s not a magician. He says he’s not a magician to solve the problem of unemployment. But, he’s a very good magician when it comes to the disappearance of Ghana’s money under create, loot and share schemes like SADA, Woyome, Ameri, Karpower, GYEEDA, Waterville, ISOFOTON, etc.”

He continued, “President Mahama is a very good magician at making our money disappear. We want change. We want to elect a new President. We don’t want a dead goat as a president. A dead goat is a dead goat, whether in Ashanti, Volta, Greater Accra, Brong Ahafo, Eastern, Upper West, Upper East, Western, Central or Northern. We don’t want to vote for a dead goat.”

Dr. Bawumia was confident that the people of Ghana “don’t want to vote for a president who cannot think far. Of what use is a president who cannot think far be to this country? We want a farsighted President. We don’t want to vote for a president whose government is corrupt, and we definitely don’t want to vote for an incompetent President.”

He assured the people of the Volta Region that “in 18 days’ time a new Ghana will be born, and we will begin to see the restoration of a leadership of vision, integrity and incorruptibility under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In 18 days’ time, we will have a new President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana. We will replace this corrupt and incompetent government of President Mahama.”

Dr. Bawumia added that “in 18 days’ time, you will begin to see the process of the restoration of the teacher training and nursing allowances. We will begin the process of transformation of the economy which brings down unemployment and brings jobs to our people.”

He therefore urged residents of Aflao and the populace of the Volta Region to unite and ignore the tribal and ethnocentric politics being waged by President Mahama.

“Let us all come together as one country, and let us not allow President Mahama to divide us. He has no message, he has lost the argument. You cannot govern with propaganda and tribalism. Away with tribalism and let’s get together with unity under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he appealed.

Thanking the people of Aflao who turned out in their thousands to attend the rally, Dr. Bawumia stated that “from what I am seeing today, I can see why some people are panicking. I can see why they are making nonsensical statements, and I can see why, Insha Allah, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be the next President of Ghana.”

  • FLASHBACK: 170 economic questions Bawumia asked Mahama

FLASHBACK: 170 economic questions Bawumia asked Mahama

Eight years ago, then-New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is currently Ghana’s Vice President posed some 170 questions on the economy to then President John Mahama.

He described the then Mahama-administration as incompetent. Now, Vice President Bawumia faces same allegation of being incompetent due to the current state of the country’s economy.

For 2 years, the country has seen a drastic increase in its inflation rate, exchange rate among others.

A press release attached to the 2016 statement by Dr Bawumia said, “a comprehensive response from government will be in the interest of the larger Ghanaian populace who are eager to hear from government officially on the true state of the economy and the economic record of the government”.

Below is the 170 point statements attached to the release:

STATE OF THE GHANAIAN ECONOMY: THE FACTS AS PRESENTED IN DR. BAWUMIA’S LECTURE

    1. Under the 8 years of the NPP government, from 2001-2008, taxes and loans amounted to GH¢20 billion. In contrast, taxes, oil revenue, and loans alone over the 8-year period of 2009-2016 would amount to some GH¢248billion.   2. Between December 2000 and December 2008, without oil, economic growth increased from 3.7% to 9.1%. After declining to 4.8% in 2009, real GDP growth increased to 7.7% in 2010 and 14% in 2011 following the onset of oil production. Since 2011 however, real GDP growth has declined steadily and drastically to 3.9% in 2015. 3. Between 2000 and 2008, the size of Ghana’s economy increased from some $5.1 billion to $28.5 billion, a 459% increase in eight years. Even in the face of a global economic and financial crisis in 2007/8 (with oil prices reaching a record high of $147/barrel), economic growth in 2008 rose to 9.1%. However, Ghana’s GDP, notwithstanding the discovery of oil, has only increased from $28.5 billion in 2008 to a projected $40 billion in 2016 (a 40% increase in eight years). However, between 2012 and 2016 i.e. during John Mahama’s tenure as president, the economy, in dollar terms, shrunk by 5%.  4. Under the NDC, GDP per capita has recorded a growth of 17% (from $1,266 in 2008 to a projected $1,481 in 2016) with oil revenue. Under John Mahama’s tenure as president (2012-2016), GDP per capita has declined by 12%.  Under NPP on the other hand, GDP per capita recorded a growth of 187% in 8 years (from $440 to $1,266) without oil revenues. While the NPP increased per capita incomes by $826 during its term, the NDC, with twelve times more resources, has increased per capita incomes by only $215 5. In dollar terms, under the NDC, the minimum wage declined from $2.12 to $2.02 by 2016 (i.e. by 4.6%). Between 2012 and 2016 (during the tenure of President Mahama) the minimum wage in dollar terms declined by 23.6%! In comparison, the NPP increased the minimum wage from the equivalent of $0.62 in 2000 to $2.12 in 2008 (i.e. by 244%). 6. While income inequality as measured by the change in minimum wage relative to the change in national income improved (by 1.8%) during the 2001 to 2008 period, it has seen a major decline since 2008, with the worst decline (-5%) occurring during John Mahama’s tenure as President.  7. According to the United Nations Human Development Index (a measure of progress in income, literacy and life expectancy), for the period 2000-2014, Ghana made the most progress in human development between 2000 and 2010.  The average growth rates of Ghana’s UNDP Human Development Index has declined from 1.33 (between 2000-2010) to 1.13 (between 2010-2014).  8. Ghana’s food import bill has increased dramatically from US$600 million in 2008 to $2.1 billion in 2015 (Figure 7). Rice imports, for example, rose by 52% from 395,400 metric tonnes in 2008 to over 600,000 metric tonnes in 2015. 9.  We should recall that the economy ended in 2012 with a fiscal deficit (on a commitment basis) of 12.2% of GDP, 11.7% of GDP in 2013 and 11.9% of GDP in 2014 This was the first time in Ghana’s history that double-digit fiscal deficits were recorded for three consecutive years (and this occurred under John Mahama’s presidency) 10. Taxes on businesses have increased dramatically and new taxes have been introduced. For example, increases in capital gains tax (from 10% to 25%), withholding tax (from 15% to 20%) and the introduction of the Energy Levy (10%), VAT on Electricity (17.5%), VAT on Financial Services (17.5%), Special Import Levy, etc. Taxes have also been introduced on ambulances and bicycles.  11.  As a resort of the deep fiscal hole, the government has resorted to cutting and abolishing all forms of allowances and expenditure that cross their mind as “abolishable”. These insensitive cuts have included cuts to research allowances for lecturers, nursing training, and teacher training allowances. 12. The government is also accumulating arrears in payments to contractors and other service providers.  13. Ghana is experiencing is a unique type of fiscal consolidation which has defied all expectations. Ghana’s fiscal consolidation is apparently taking place in the midst of unsustainably high public debt levels, inflation that is stubbornly high and is currently at 16.7% (the 8th highest in Africa).   14. A rising black hole of state-owned enterprise (SOE) debt, which together with the debts owed by the government to the bulk oil distribution companies (BDCs) and the lack of adequate supervision of microfinance companies can potentially collapse the banking system. In addition, we have rising interest rates, crowding out of the private sector, reduced business confidence, and declining economic growth.  15. The IMF has stated that it has not concluded the third review of Ghana’s program which was expected to go to the Board in June this year. Amongst the reasons stated by the IMF for the nonconclusion of the third review is that the fiscal data for 2015 is yet to be “reconciled”.  16. The 2016 supplementary budget has further muddied the waters by revealing a large unexplained “Discrepancy” of GH¢1.7 billion in 2016. It is a figure that the government has been unable to explain.  17. Following the adoption and implementation of the HIPC initiative and the Government’s policy framework of fiscal discipline, the country’s debt to GDP ratio had declined from 189% in 2000 to 32% of GDP. At the end of 2008, Ghana’s total debt amounted to GH¢9.5 billion.  However, in the last seven years alone under this NDC government, Ghana’s total debt has ballooned from GH¢9.5 billion to GH¢100 billion by the end of 2015 and GH¢105 billion in May 2016!

    18. 66% of Ghana’s debt, GH¢69 billion of it, has been accumulated under the presidency of John Dramani Mahama in just last three and a half years!  19. In terms of the dollar equivalent of the money borrowed at the time of borrowing, this government has borrowed some $39 billion in eight years.  By December 2016 the amount will be at least $42 billion. 20. With this major increase in debt, Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio (using the book value of the debt) has increased from 32% in 2008 to 72% at the end of 2015 . 21. In the presentation of the supplementary budget in July 2016, the Minister of Finance stated that Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio has declined from 72% in December 2015 to 63% in May 2016. Unfortunately, and sadly, this is untrue. If the Minister had reported accurately, it would be obvious that the debt to GDP ratio for Ghana at the end of March 2016 was 71.1% (With the debt stock at GH¢103 billion and first quarter GDP at GH¢144 billion). So this is what we know at the end of the first quarter of 2016. Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio is at 71.1%, and not the 63% reported by the Minister for May 2016 for which he used projected December GDP data.  22. In 2015, interest payments amounted to more than GH¢9.6 billion. That figure was more than the total debt stock of GH¢9.5 billion in 2008.  23. To put the interest payments on the debt in context, we should note that the entire allocations in the 2016 budget to the Ministries of Roads and Highways, Trade and Industry, Food and Agriculture, Water Resources, Works and Housing, Youth and Sports, and Ministry of Transport amounted to a total of GH¢2.1 billion. Interest payments in 2016 (GH¢10.5 billion) would be five times what was allocated to these six key ministries combined.  As interest payments go up, the space for development shrinks, and this is all due to financial indiscipline.  24. At the end of 2008, Ghana’s total interest payments amounted to GH¢680 million. 25. The interest payments on the debt stock in 2015, was six times Ghana’s oil revenue.  26. Ghana’s interest payments as a percentage of GDP declined from 7.9% in 2001 to 2.3% by 2008. It has since increased to 6.5% by 2015. It is worth noting that Ghana’s interest payments have doubled under the Presidency of John Dramani Mahama.  27. The data also shows that during the NPP period of governance, capital expenditure far exceeded interest payments. Infrastructure expenditure as a percentage of GDP declined sharply after 2008 as interest payments increased. From 2014 to date, interest payments have now incredibly exceeded infrastructure expenditure.  28. Interest payments have also incredibly overtaken key agricultural production (Cocoa, Livestock, Fishing, Forestry & Logging) in Ghana  29. With such large scale borrowing, the government is crowding out the private sector which is unable to borrow to grow their business. Risk-free Treasury Bill rates are around 23% (up from 10.6% in 2011) and bank lending rates are on the rise because of excessive government borrowing. Lending rates of financial institutions are now as high as 40%.  30. Under the NPP, Treasury Bill rates were reduced from 42% at end 2000 to 24.7% at end 2008 (a reduction by 17 percentage points). Under the NDC, Treasury Bill rates have only been reduced from 24.7% in 2008 to 23% in August 2016 (a reduction of only 1.7 percentage points).  31. The cedi has depreciated from some GH¢1.2 to the dollar in 2009 to GH¢ 3.95 (almost GH¢4) to the dollar currently (Figure 14). This is in contrast to the remarkable stability of the cedi during the eight years of NPP government. 32. In terms of exchange rate depreciation, the worst performance between 2001 and 2016 has been between 2012 and 2016 (during the tenure of John Mahama as President).   33. Akosombo has constantly been over-drafted, thermal plants are frequently breaking down, and all our plants operate below capacity.  34. The Takoradi 3 thermal plant has been shut down although it was commissioned only two years ago. Therefore, in spite of the fact that our country has a total installed capacity of about 3000MW, available capacity is under 2000MW.  35. The very existence of our biggest electricity generator, the Volta River Authority, is under serious threat, as its debts continue to increase.  VRA’s debt is reported to be between US$1.5 billion to US$2billion .  36. The cost of electricity to the industry has been alarmingly high, and this has led to the collapse of some factories and relocation of others to our neighbouring Ivory Coast.  37. The problems in the energy sector have led to five years of “dumsor” which has brought unprecedented devastation on our industries (particularly small businesses), job losses, income losses, deaths in our hospitals, disruption of life and destruction of electrical appliances of businesses and homes cannot be fully quantified.  38. Bad loans in the banking sector have risen significantly. Economic and Financial data from the Central Bank, show that non-performing loans have risen sharply from 11.2% in May 2015 to a critically high 19.3% in May 2016.  39. Available information shows that due to non-payment of these loans, the banks have declared GH¢2.4 billion of the outstanding stock of loans as a complete loss and are making provisions against profits.  40. The Asset Quality Review of Banks conducted in 2015 shows the significant vulnerability of banks to current economic conditions, and that if the affected banks were to provision fully for all bad loans, a significant number of them would collapse. Eight (8) banks were identified to exhibit significant weaknesses, with capital adequacy ratios below 10% ( some below 5%) and nearing collapse.   41. Real credit to the private sector is on the decline. As at May 2015, the annual flow of credit to the private sector was GH¢4.5 billion (around $1.7 billion). For the same period in May 2016, the yearly flow of credit from the banks to the private sector had declined substantially to GH¢1.7 billion (around $445 million).  42. One of the reasons the John Mahama government has given for requesting an IMF bailout was to help it regain policy credibility.  43. The government appears to have reneged on an understanding it had with the IMF with regards to the recently passed Bank of Ghana Act and the Public financial Management Act. This quite clearly is bad faith and undermines the credibility of Government. 44. There is also the big question of the use of the 2015 $1 billion Eurobond proceeds.  The prospectus to the Eurobond issue clearly specified what the money was to be used for. Specifically, the prospectus states that:  a. “The Republic expects the net proceeds of the issue of the notes to amount to approximately US$958,517,630, which the Republic expects to utilize to repay outstanding domestic debt of the Republic” (Page 29 of Prospectus) 45. What is now clear is that the government did not quite use the proceeds for the purpose that was stated in the prospectus and the basis on which investors bought the bond. In what is a clear admission that this is in fact the case, the Minister of Finance during a press conference on August 24th 2016, stated that out of the $1 billion Eurobond : “We spent just about $500 million, and carried the remaining $500 million as a buffer as we go into zero financing. So that when we have uncovered auction, we are able to use the World Bank money which we should have used entirely for domestic to get into that policy to ride on that policy”  46. When Ghana issued its first Eurobond under the NPP in 2007, the spread (i.e. the difference) between the interest rate on the bond and US treasuries of similar tenor was 3.87%. The second and third bonds were issued under the NDC in 2013 and 2014 at higher spreads of 5.4% and 5.72% respectively.  47.  In 2015, notwithstanding a World Bank guarantee, the spread was the highest so far at 8.34%. Clearly, confidence in the management of our economy has eroded in the eyes of the international investor community, as the years have gone by under the NDC’s economic management. It comes therefore as no surprise that our fifth Eurobond was rejected by the market when it tried to borrow.  Ghana attracted the highest interest rates on its borrowings among its peers in sub-Saharan Africa in 2015.  48. President John Mahama and the NDC government have also made several statements which have either turned out to be untrue or are contradictory. Either way they have served to undermine the credibility of government and its economic management team. These include: a. The denial that government would ask for a bailout from the IMF

    b. The promises to end DUMSOR

    c. His flip-flops on ECG Privatisation

    d. The promise to put cash in the pockets of Ghanaians

    e. The denial that civil servants are likely to be laid off under a rationalisation program to be implemented in 2017

    f. The promise by President Mahama not to make any more promises 49. Graduate unemployment has reached crisis proportions with a reported 60% of graduates unable to find a job three years after graduation. 50. GYEEDA, for example, was used as a vehicle to syphon public funds and not for job creation. 51. Under the NPP (Jan 2001 to December 2008), cocoa prices ranged between $965 and $3,021 per metric tonne. The NPP enjoyed cocoa prices of above $3,000 for only 1 month in all the 8 years.  52. Under the NDC, (Jan 2009 to July 2016), cocoa prices have ranged from a low of $2,113 and a high of $3,522. The NDC has enjoyed cocoa prices of $3,000 or more for 42 months (more than half of the time they have been in office). 53. While the average cocoa price under the NPP was $1,729; the average cocoa price under the NDC has been $2,873 – 66% more than under the NPP! 54. Under the NPP (from Jan 2001 to Dec 2008), gold prices ranged from a low of $260 to a high of $968 per ounce. Under the NDC on the other hand (from Jan 2009 to July 2016), gold prices have ranged from a low of $858 to a high of $1,770. 55. While the average gold price under the NPP was $486; the average gold price under the NDC has been $1,317 – 170% more than under the NPP. 56. The fact is that cocoa and gold prices have been 66% and 170% higher respectively under the NDC, on the average, than under the NPP. 57. Cote d’Ivoire next door which has come through a civil war after an electoral dispute has, thanks to disciplined, honest and prudent management, recovered dramatically. Its GDP growth was 8.4% while Inflation was 1.2% in 2015. Cote d’Ivoire is now the largest producer of cashew in the world and its economy is being transformed dramatically.  58.  Contrary to the claims by the President, except for the fiscal deficit, on virtually every single indicator such as GDP growth, inflation, exchange rate, exports, Eurobond interest rates, debt/GDP ratio, etc. the performance of the economy in 2013 was better than in 2014 and 2015.  59. In December 2013, after a meeting with the Council of State in Aburi, President Mahama stated that his government will “transit from first to second gear in 2014 after using this year to lay a very solid foundation for the economy”,  60. In fact, the evidence is that for President Mahama, since he was sworn in after the 2012 election, 2013, the year of the election petition, represents his best economic performance!  61.  If you sum the cost of all the infrastructure expenditure undertaken by this NDC government from loans, grants and taxes between 2009 and 2015 it is less than $7 billion.  Meanwhile, the government has borrowed the equivalent at the time of borrowing of some $39 billion; so where is the rest of the money? 62. Indeed, according to the Managing Director of the IMF, most of Ghana’s borrowing has been used for consumption and not for investment.  63. I saw two virtually identical sets of Teachers bungalows in Dambai Teacher Training College this year; one constructed under the NPP in 2007 and the other by the NDC in 2011. These two buildings are side by side. The one constructed by the NPP cost some GH¢195,000 whereas the one constructed by the NDC cost some GH¢ 900,000, 4.6 times more. 64. Another example is a runway rehabilitation alone at Kumasi airport which cost this country $23.8 million, whereas a proposed airport at Ho is estimated at $25 million. It is on record that Ethiopia is building its Shire Airport at a cost of $21 million.  65. The issue of the Ameri Power Deal is one episode of issues bordering on corruption and the failure to ensure value for money for the people of Ghana. In this deal, Ghana is basically purchasing 10 Gas Power Plants for $510 million even though the same Plants can be acquired for $220 million on the market.   66. An amount of GH¢3.65 million, from oil funds, was used for the rebranding of 116 Metro Mass Rapid Transit buses. Money was earmarked for a supposed Osu railway. Meanwhile, the company that actually did the work of employing Ghanaians to do the branding of the buses says it charged GH¢11,600 as the cost for the branding of all the 116 buses.  67.  Egypt is constructing a 1,800 Megawatt gas power plant at a cost of $1.3 billion.  Abu Dhabi is constructing a 1,600 Megawatt gas power plant at a cost of $1.5 billion. Together, Ameri and Karpower will cost Ghana over $2 billion over five years and yet will give us 505 Megawatts.  68.  The University of Ghana has acquired a loan facility of US$217m from the Israeli Government to build a 600-bed teaching hospital at Legon. The cost of building a new 600-bed teaching hospital by the University of Ghana is $30m less than the cost of renovating and expanding Ridge Hospital from 200-bed to 420. 69. Indeed, given the resources at its disposal, one should expect at least four to five times the quantum of investment that the NDC claims to have undertaken.  The close to $33 billion of borrowing that was not used for projects could have, inter alia: Solved the water problems in Ghana.

Solved the energy problem and not put the country through 5 years of Dumsor at the cost of human lives and collapsing businesses and unemployment.

Put in place at least 1000 kilometres of asphalt road in each region. There would be no major road problem left in any region after this.

Transformed Agriculture in the Northern regions, Afram Plains and the rest of Ghana through investment in machinery, irrigation and dams.

Put in place one world class hospital in each region.

Buy at least 1000 ambulances for the Ghana Ambulance Service.

Set up factories with the private sector across the country to add value to our raw materials and create jobs create.

Equip our existing health and education institutions with the state of the art facilities.

Build an additional 600 of the Senior High Schools the government is currently trying to build.

Construct the Accra-Kumasi-Paga railway as well as the Western Railway line. 70. The evidence shows that notwithstanding the massive increase in the debt stock, capital expenditure as a percentage (%) of GDP has actually been on the decline from 9.1% of GDP in 2008 to 3.9% by 2015 .  Capital expenditure as a percentage of GDP averaged 11% for 2001-2008 (without oil) while that for 2009-2015 has averaged 5.7% (with oil). 71. Indeed, it was His Excellency President Mahama who told us that any government touting infrastructure projects as achievements is engaging in an exercise in mediocrity.  72.   The NPP government of 2001-2008 undertook significant infrastructure investment across the various sectors: education, health, roads, energy, etc.   WATER PROJECTS (EXAMPLES)  73.   Cape coast  74.   Tamale  75.    Ada/Sege

A key difference between NPP and NDC, however, is that the impact of the NPP’s infrastructure investment along with structural reforms and prudent economic policies of President J.A. Kufuor was felt positively in the economy with: 151. A significant increase in GDP growth from 3.7% to 9.1% without oil 152. Reduction in corporate taxes to boost business growth

    153. A massive improvement in cocoa production

    163. A fall in lending rates and wide access to credit for the private sector to expand 164. We should recall that on August 30th, 2012, President Mahama stated during his acceptance speech in Sunyani that “The NDC government for the past three and a half years has been laying the foundation for a transformational take off of the country’s development”  165. On December 5th, 2012, President Mahama’s Information Minister stated with regards to the economy that “we want to invest in jobs and in people, in the economy which is part of the prevailing better Ghana agenda. We have already laid the foundation, we have taken off and we want to soar”  166. The NDC 2012 Manifesto states that “This Manifesto is based on the achievements over the last four years, during which period we established firm foundation for delivering a program of economic recovery and sustained welfare for the people of Ghana” 167. The fact is that the worst period of economic performance since 2001 has been under President Mahama’s stewardship between 2012 and 2016.   168. Indeed, during the NPP tenure between 2001 and 2008, corporate taxes were slashed from 32% to 25% and tax revenue actually increased!  169. The data shows that notwithstanding (or because of) the high level of taxes, there is a revenue shortfall of GH¢700 million for the first half of 2016 170. The Auditor General’s Report has indicated that between 2012 and 2014, GH¢5.9 billion of government funds cannot be accounted for.

  • FLASHBACK: You stole from Northerners but want them to vote for you – Bawumia tells Mahama

FLASHBACK: You stole from Northerners but want them to vote for you – Bawumia tells Mahama

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, eight years ago criticized former President Mahama for tarnishing the reputation of the Northern brand, which was once known for its integrity and honesty, with corruption.

Addressing the people of Balungu in the Bongo constituency, Dr. Bawumia urged the Northern community not to vote for Mr. Mahama and the NDC.

He argued that a vote for them would signify a continuation of the extensive corruption and theft witnessed over the past 8 years.

“John Mahama’s government is the most corrupt government in the history of Ghana. Dollar for dollar, cedi for cedi, this government is the most corrupt in our history. And yet he tells the people of the North to vote for him because he is our brother. Why does your government steal from Northerners if you care for Northerners and why do you want us to give you another opportunity to steal more from the people you say you are trying to protect?”, he asked.

    1116201624130937646266441352

Dr. Bawumia remarked that due to the President’s actions and those around him, he had compromised the longstanding belief that Northerners are averse to corruption and are known for their honesty.

He reminisced about the Northerners of the past, highlighting their dedication, integrity, and selfless service to their communities. They worked in various roles without seeking personal gain.

Dr. Bawumia expressed regret over how the current government, led by someone who proudly identifies as a Northern President, has abandoned these principles.

“Let us face it; John Mahama’s government is a disgrace to Northerners. Northerners were always a proud people. We value our integrity. We don’t have money but we have pride. We are seen as honest people. This is the way our fathers worked; honesty was the guiding principle of Northerners. We are honest and value our integrity. But today thanks to John Mahama, the people of Ghana are viewing us very differently”, he stated.

He added: “Therefore it is time to restore the pride of Northerners and the way we are going to restore that pride is to get rid of this John Mahama’s corrupt government. It is not doing Northerners any good and this is why we have to vote for Nana Akufo-Addo.”

Dr Bawumia is on campaign tour of the Upper East Region that comes on the back of a month long tour of the Northern Region which saw him visit 27 constituencies in the Region.

  • Psalm 500 – Watch Akufo-Addo’s appointee Mireku Duker misquote the Bible (throwback)

Psalm 500 – Watch Akufo-Addo’s appointee Mireku Duker misquote the Bible (throwback)

A video which captured the Member of Parliament (MP) for  Tarkwa-Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, misquoting the bible in 2020 has surfaced again.

The book of Psalms in the Christian Bible starts at Psalm 1 and ends at Psalm 150, however,  the MP who participated in the “Peace Concert” organised by Tarkwa Crusaders Chorale on Sunday, November 1, quoted Psalm 500 while interacting with congregants.

The member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) explained that the bible admonished Christians to enter the throne room of God with praises and thanksgiving.

“Psalm 500 states that we should always be glad when we come before the Lord. When you are singing, we should sing with a joyful and cheerful heart,”he added.

But the scripture that depicts the short sermon the MP shared is situated in Psalm 100 verses 4.

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name,” Psalm 100:4 indicates.

Scores of Ghanaians did not spare the MP after some criticized him of preaching out of context.

Days after the video, the MP denied quoting Psalm 500, he emphasized that the video was doctored by certain members of the opposition party, the National Democratic Congress.

You may be wondering why a clip that made rounds on the internet in 2020 has got Ghanaians throwing the MP again.

Recently, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia misquoted the bible at the Glorious Word Power Ministries International, in Accra when he visited  Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah.

Bawumia stated “If you go to the Book of Zachariah 4:1, what does it say, “It is not by might nor by power, but by the spirit of the Lord Almighty”.

Those sharing the video of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s address have questioned whether he correctly quoted the verse from the Bible, suggesting a mix-up.

According to those referencing the New King James Version of the Bible, Bawumia quoted Zechariah 4:6 instead of Zechariah 4:1.

Zechariah 4:6 NKJV reads: “So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.”

Zechariah 4:1 NKJV, on the other hand, reads: “Now the angel who talked with me came back and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep.”

NPP has more Christians than Muslims, yet I was chosen to lead the party – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has acknowledged the pivotal role played by Christian members in electing him as the party’s first Muslim flagbearer.

Speaking at the IFTAR event at the Suhum Ayekotse Central Mosque, Dr. Bawumia reflected on his journey within the NPP, highlighting the significance of overcoming initial doubts about a Muslim leading the party.

He attributed his success to divine intervention and the overwhelming support he received from Christian members, emphasizing that Christians outnumber Muslims within the party.

Dr. Bawumia pledged to bring the Qur’an to Ghana’s seat of government, the Jubilee House, if elected as President, expressing his aspirations for a potential eight-year tenure.

He contrasted his ambitions with former President Mahama’s four-year presidency, urging for patience and peaceful proceedings in the upcoming election.

In a contrasting viewpoint, independent presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen advocated for the election of a Christian leader in Ghana’s predominantly Christian nation.

Speaking at the Church of Pentecost’s Easter Sunday Convention, Kyerematen appealed to the congregation to support him as a candidate capable of embodying Christian values and transforming the nation.

“During the presidential primary, they said a Muslim cannot lead the NPP. But by the grace of God after voting out of the 10 candidates I secured an unprecedented 61% which signifies the hand of God in the victory because when you look at NPP, Christians are more than Muslims in the party so it means it is the Christians who elected Dr Bawumia a Muslim as flagbearer for the NPP for the first time it has not happened before “said Dr. Bawumia.

“After December 7th I will take the Qur’an and pray and take it to the Jubilee house. It is Possible

“Mahama has only four years but I will have eight years. Do we want four years or eight years? that is why I want him to be patient so that I take the vehicle and drive. Now I am mate”.

“So we are going into election everything must be peaceful. I am contesting this election with my Brother the former President Mahama [Flagbearer of NDC] who has been President before reason I have been telling him to stay back so that I also clinch the presidency because I have not been President before. we know what he did he should also give me a chance to be President to also exhibit what I can do”.

“As a predominantly Christian nation, as Christians, it is our responsibility that we elect a Christian leader who is also a Christlike leader.”

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia marked the Easter period with a series of visits to churches, where he extended Easter greetings to Christians.

One notable visit was to the premises of Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, the founder of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, in Accra.

During his visit, Bawumia received prayers and sat on Rev. Owusu-Bempah’s chair, a gesture symbolizing blessings and respect. The reverend also commended Bawumia, affirming his character as good and his heart as pure.

After the prayer session, Bawumia addressed the congregation briefly, sharing a message of hope and encouragement before departing.

A short video clip of Bawumia’s address, in which he reportedly referenced a verse from the Holy Scriptures, has been circulating on social media.

“If you go to the Book of Zachariah 4:1, what does it say, “It is not by might nor by power, but by the spirit of the Lord Almighty” he stated to applause.

  • My position as flagbearer was ‘given’ to me by Christian majority in NPP – Dr Bawumia

My position as flagbearer was ‘given’ to me by Christian majority in NPP – Dr Bawumia

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressed gratitude to Christians within the party for electing him as the first Muslim flagbearer during an Iftar event at the Suhum Ayekotse Central Mosque.

At the event, attended by Imams, Chiefs, and constituents from the Suhum Constituency on Saturday, March 30, 2024, Dr. Bawumia reflected on his journey within the NPP.

He emphasised the significance of his victory in securing the party’s flagbearer position despite initial doubts about a Muslim leading the party.

Dr. Bawumia credited his success to divine intervention, highlighting the overwhelming support he received from Christian members within the party.

“During the presidential primary, they said a Muslim could not lead the NPP. But by the grace of God, after the voting, out of the 10 candidates, I secured an unprecedented 61% which signifies the hand of God in the victory because when you look at NPP, Christians are more than Muslims in the party so it means it is the Christians who elected Dr Bawumia a Muslim, as flagbear for the NPP for the first time; it has not happened before,” said Dr. Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia also made a bold declaration to the Muslim community, promising to bring the Qur’an to Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, if elected as President.

He said, “after December 7th, I will take the Qur’an and pray and take it to the Jubilee house. It is possible.”

Vice President Dr. Bawumia expressed his ambition for the forthcoming presidential election, stating his intention to serve two terms as president. He contrasted his potential eight-year tenure with Mahama’s remaining four-year presidency.

“Mahama has only four years but I will have eight years. Do we want four years or eight years? That is why I want him to be patient so that I take the vehicle and drive. Now I am a mate”.

Dr. Mamudu Bawumia urged for peaceful proceedings and highlighted his competition with former President Mahama, urging him to step aside and allow him the opportunity to lead the nation.

“So we are going into an election; everything must be peaceful. I am contesting this election with my brother, the former President Mahama [Flagbearer of NDC] who has been President before, reason I have been telling him to stay back so that I also clinch the presidency because I have not been President before. We know what he did he should also give me a chance to be president to also exhibit what I can do.”

Dr. Bawumia’s statement stands in contrast to that of Alan Kyerematen, an independent presidential aspirant, who also made a plea to voters by asserting that Ghana, being predominantly Christian, should elect a Christian leader in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Kyerematen delivered his message at the Church of Pentecost’s Easter Sunday Convention, presenting himself as the candidate capable of bringing about transformative change for the nation.

“As a predominantly Christian nation, as Christians, it is our responsibility that we elect a Christian leader who is also a Christlike leader.”

He emphasized the importance of electing a leader who aligns with Christian principles, portraying himself as the embodiment of such values.

Bawumia and NHIA’s dubious, deadly digitalization initiatives have cost Ghana over GHC2 billion – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has accused the government of significant expenditure in the health sector, describing its initiatives as “dubious, duplicative, and deadly so-called digitalization.”

In a detailed Facebook post on April 3, 2024, Mr Ablakwa stated that these initiatives amounted to GH¢2.67 billion. He expressed concern over repeated reports of deprivation in health facilities nationwide in recent years.

“With this shambolic state of health care in Ghana, one wonders why the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led government will ignore the priorities begging for urgent solutions and rather be fixated on dubious, duplicative and deadly so-called digitalization initiatives at a heartless cost of GHS2.67 billion?” a portion of his post read.

He noted that the National Health Insurance Authority has submitted a 2024 allocation formula to Parliament that prioritizes the following in a “thoughtless and unpatriotic manner”:

    1. Biometric ID Cards and Authentication System — GHS405.74 million (despite the substantial amount already spent on Ghana Cards)
    2. Management Information System — GHS343.92 million
    3. Capturing of Claims Data — GHS112 million
    4. Ministry of Health (Health Provider – E-Health Solution) — GHS80 million

Mr Ablakwa questioned whether it was right for a “struggling health insurance scheme which is unable to pay claims on time, a scheme owing hospitals, a scheme operating in dilapidated hospitals without critical equipment, with many analysts indicating that cash-and-carry is back in many parts of Ghana, be spending over GHS1.1billion on non-core interventions in the name of digitalization?”

“Note also that after the NHIA allocated over GHS1.1 billion in 2024 to shady and misplaced digitalization deals, they callously and shamelessly allocated only a paltry GHS2 million for desperate dialysis patients,” he added.

Ablakwa writes: The GHS2.6 billion dubious, duplicative & deadly digitalization deals in Ghana’s health sector – Part 1

Ghana’s health sector has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons.

A few months ago, 19 renal patients lost their lives at the Korle-Bu Renal Unit because government was unable to provide just GHS4million. The dialysis crisis has still not been resolved even as private companies like the First Sky Group come to the rescue.

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have warned that all their dialysis machines except one and half have broken down without government intervention to replace them for several months.

KATH has been without a mammography machine to diagnose early signs of breast cancer for several years.

Prominent chiefs and opinion leaders continue to agitate about their abandoned hospital projects — most of which were almost completed by 2016.

Not too long ago, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government could not provide childhood vaccines leading to a national emergency. Ghana had to fall on Nigeria for a bailout albeit under deceitful circumstances.

Numerous government hospitals are lamenting the lack of critical medical equipment needed to save lives. If MRI machines at prestigious hospitals such as 37 and Ridge have broken down for months without resources to repair or replace them, then one can imagine the situation in less endowned facilities.

Indeed, former Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu told Parliament not too long ago that Ghana has only 4 functioning MRIs in government hospitals across the entire country.

Funding for President Akufo-Addo’s flagship Agenda 111 has remained a huge challenge as he repeatedly misses his completion deadlines since the peak of COVID-19.

Doctors, nurses, midwives and other health workers continue to agitate for better working conditions. The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) revealed this week that already some 6,000 nurses have left Ghana since August 2023 in search of the proverbial greener pastures.

The GRNMA President, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo left many Ghanaians further depressed when she revealed that many heroic nurses who put their lives at great risk on the frontlines of the covid war have still not received the package they were promised by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.

Ghanaians are yet to recover from the tragedy at the Tema General Hospital NICU which occurred a few days ago when the hospital was subjected to DUMSOR. Apparently, the standby generator to protect babies on oxygen was faulty. One mother insists she lost her precious baby because of this national disgrace.

Health facilities which were hitherto exempted from ECG disconnections no longer enjoy that dispensation.

As a Member of Parliament, I have been compelled to rely on my external network to equip hospitals and establish a surgical block in my beloved constituency.

With this shambolic state of health care in Ghana, one wonders why the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led government will ignore the priorities begging for urgent solutions, and rather be fixated on dubious, duplicative and deadly so-called digitalization initiatives at a heartless cost of GHS2.67billion?

To our utter shock, the National Health Insurance Authority has submitted a 2024 allocation formula to Parliament which mindlessly and unpatriotically prioritizes the following:

    1. Biometric ID Cards and Authentication System — GHS405.74million (this is despite the billions we have already spent on Ghana Cards)

    2. Management Information System — GHS343.92million

    3. Capturing of Claims Data — GHS112million

    4. Ministry of Health (Health Provider – E-Health Solution) — GHS80million

    5. Claims Processing Centres and E-Claims — GHS76million

    6. Archival System and Document Management— GHS38.58million

    7. Telecare Services Platform — GHS30million

    8. Transfer of Data from NIA GHS10million

    9. E-Pharmacy — GHS11million

The NHIA’s dubious and duplicative digitalization expenditure for 2024 alone amounts to an incredible GHS1,107,240,000. (See attached relevant extracts from NHIA’s Allocation Formula submitted to Parliament)

The fundamental question is — should a struggling health insurance scheme which is unable to pay claims on time, a scheme owing hospitals, a scheme operating in dilapidated hospitals without critical equipment, with many analysts indicating that cash-and-carry is back in many parts of Ghana be spending over GHS1.1billion on non-core interventions in the name of digitalization?

Note also that after the NHIA allocated over GHS1.1billion in 2024 to shady and misplaced digitalization deals, they callously and shamelessly allocated only a paltry GHS2million for desperate dialysis patients.

What is even more disturbing, my investigations reveal that most of the items the NHIA is spending over a billion Cedis on are already catered for in another massive US$100million (GHS1.3billion) single-sourced contract awarded in 2017 by the Ministry of Health under Hon. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu to a company known as Lightwave eHealthcare Solutions Limited. The 20th November, 2015 registered company is owned by Sampson Djaba and Vincent Attabuatsi (see incorporation documents attached).

The US$100million Lightwave project is described as the E-Health Project with Bio-Surveillance (Early Warning) System. The launch took place at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital on November 21, 2017 and was headlined by Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare as the Special Guest of Honour, Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu as Keynote Speaker and Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Director General of the Ghana Health Service.

At this launch, and from further documentation in my possession, the scope of the US$100million (GHS1.3billion) Lightwave deal encompasses the following 8 key features:

    i) Centralised data centre with 24hr recovery

ii) Networking and connectivity of ALL hospitals clinics, and community health clinics in every region/district/sub-district in Ghana(iii) Networking of ALL agencies(iv) Provide electronic medical recordsv) Develop real-time bio-surveillance system(vi) Develop patient management system.(vii) NHIS Integration platform(viii) Develop a centralised laboratory system.

(The claims above as contained in the launch brochure are duly attached.)

Even before the November 21, 2017 launch, Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu signed a 2nd June, 2017 letter addressed to the Ghana Health Service Director General confirming his ministry’s engagement of Lightwave and how the roll out will ensure that “hospital data is integrated with claims management system of the National Health Insurance Scheme.” (Intercepted letter is attached).

The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government should be explaining to Ghanaian taxpayers why we should be paying over GHS2.6billion Cedis on needless, duplicative and wasteful digitalization deals at the NHIA, Lightwave and another as will de disclosed tomorrow, particularly taking into account other more important and basic unresolved challenges in the health sector.

Strangely, the then Health Minister’s 2nd June, 2017 letter practically killed the businesses of all other Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Patient Management System (PMS) providers in the space, considering that all heads of facilities were warned in the minister’s letter not to renew any existing EMR contract. (See last paragraph of intercepted letter).

My further probing confirms that the Lightwave sweetheart deal is still very much active and is costing the Ghanaian taxpayer a fortune.

In 2023 alone, at a time the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government said they didn’t have GHS4million to save the lives of 19 dialysis patients at Korle Bu, Ghanaian taxpayers coughed a staggering GHS246.8million to pay Lightwave for digitalization — largely the same digitalization we are about to pay billions for again via the NHIA — absolutely unconscionable!

Additional evidence of how active the US$100million Lightwave deal is can be gleaned from the recent 29th February, 2024 letter signed by Ghana Health Service Director General, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye addressed to selected regional health directors. (See intercepted letter attached).

Very instructively, I am not the only one detecting and raising genuine concerns about the lack of value for money, duplication and wasteful expenditures with this misguided craze for digitalization. Two weeks after the Health Minister’s 2nd June, 2017 letter instructing all health facilities to open their doors to the almighty Lightwave, the Communications and Digitalization Minister in the same Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, promptly issued a strongly worded notice to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies dated 16th June, 2017 in which she condemns the canker and urged her colleagues to consult NITA before engaging in these costly digitalization procurements. (See intercepted Notice attached).

It is obvious the Communications and Digitalization Minister’s Notice was contemptuously ignored then, and continues to be ignored to this day.

The much touted digitalization drive has obviously become the new conduit for create-loot-and-share schemes.

I am most delighted that Parliament before going on recess ordered a parliamentary probe into all the alarming digitalization contracts within the health sector.

It is time for President Akufo-Addo to suspend the plethora of dubious, doubtful, duplicative, deadly, amorphous, needless and extremely wasteful GHS2.6billion digitalization shady deals in the health sector. I shall be writing to him demanding his urgent intervention in this regard.

In Part 2 of this exposé to be released on Thursday April 4, 2024 at 6am, I shall reveal how another very powerful crony company is cashing in on this lucrative digitalization looting spree in the health sector, even as the real healthcare challenges are abandoned, and the much bigger dangers for our collective security.

The digitalization looting cabal shall be defeated!

    For God and Country.

Bawumia allocates GHS1m to speed up clearance process for KATH project items at Tema Port

In a bid to support the ongoing renovation efforts at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken steps to expedite the clearance of crucial construction materials from the Tema Harbour.

The shipment, which includes vital imported tiles necessary for the project, had been facing delays at the port, resulting in additional demurrage fees and impeding progress.

With the import duty for ten containers of tiles totaling over GH¢1.7 million, there was a looming risk of indefinite project delays.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Bawumia intervened by contributing GH¢1 million towards clearing the duty, ensuring the seamless continuation of this crucial hospital renovation.

The ‘Heal Komfo Anokye’ project, a joint initiative launched by the Asantehene in collaboration with KATH, aims to raise $10 million for the comprehensive refurbishment of Blocks A, B, C, and D within the hospital.

This initiative holds particular significance as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the enstoolment of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and is poised to revitalize the nearly seven-decade-old tertiary healthcare facility.

Ghana’s Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts with her impeccable sense of style, as highlighted by renowned fashion critic Charlie Dior.

Dior expressed admiration for Mrs. Bawumia‘s recent outfit worn during the 6th March Independence Day parade, featuring a striking magenta-purple Kente ensemble complemented by elegant accessories.

Dior lauded her consistency in delivering glamorous yet modest looks, suggesting she would triumph in a global fashion face-off among first and second ladies.

“The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, showed up on our timeline in this gorgeous look. This is how you represent the culture. This is how you represent your region and your entire country. When it comes to the Second Lady, one thing you cannot take away from her is her style.

“She is telling us she can dress and still perform her national duties. We need to have a fashion face-off between first and second ladies in the world, and Samira will win hands down,” he stated during his YouTube show.

Unlike Mahama, I don’t need a honeymoon if I’m voted into power – Bawumia

Ghana’s Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his readiness to immediately assume office upon receiving the mandate from the Ghanaian people.

In contrast, his main opponent, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has indicated a desire for a period of rest before assuming leadership responsibilities.

Speaking to party supporters and Easter celebrants in Kwahu, Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of vigorous campaigning and extensive grassroots engagement to secure victory for the NPP in the upcoming elections.

He urged everyone present to actively promote and advocate for the party’s policies and achievements at all times.

“Unlike Mahama, he wants a honeymoon. After being elected, he won’t come back again so he won’t mind you. As for me, I’ll come back in 2028. So, I would have to ensure I do my best for you all. So, everyone must campaign very well.

“Today, we are going door to door, house to house to campaign to bring victory. It is possible, we are going to break the eight,” he said during his “It is Possible Mega Easter Walk and Mini Rally” at Kwahu on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

During the event, the vice president unveiled new strategies that his government plans to implement to tackle illegal mining if elected.

One of the key measures is the decision not to burn excavators and other machinery confiscated from illegal miners.

We will get you a bank; no more burning of excavators – Bawumia ‘promises’ small scale miners

NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled a significant policy shift regarding the government’s response to illegal mining, or galamsey, activities.

Speaking at a gathering of enthusiastic NPP supporters during a health walk in Kwahu, Eastern Region, on March 30, Dr. Bawumia announced a departure from the previous practice of burning confiscated excavators.

While acknowledging the efforts made by the NPP in combating galamsey over the past seven years, he emphasised the necessity for a fresh approach to effectively tackle the issue.

Dr. Bawumia pledged to implement a revamped strategy aimed at combating illegal mining while also preserving seized equipment, particularly excavators, if elected.

“We are going to help small-scale miners; we will introduce a mineral development bank to get money for them. There is a new regime for small-scale miners, we will not burn your seized excavators,” he said.

Additionally, he underscored that the current NPP administration, under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, has surpassed the previous Mahama government in every facet of the economy.

“Jobs, we have performed better, agricultural growth, we have performed better, Zongo development, we have performed better, roads, we have performed better, airports, we have performed better, interchanges, we have performed better,” he noted.

The presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced a significant policy shift regarding the government’s approach to combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Addressing a gathering of enthusiastic NPP supporters during a health walk in Kwahu, Eastern Region, on Saturday, March 30, Dr. Bawumia declared that confiscated excavators would no longer be destroyed under his administration.

While commending the NPP’s efforts in tackling galamsey over the past seven years, Dr. Bawumia recognized the necessity for a fresh strategy to effectively address the issue.

If elected, Dr. Bawumia has vowed to introduce a revamped approach aimed at curbing illegal mining while preserving confiscated equipment, particularly excavators.

“We are going to help small-scale miners; we will introduce a mineral development bank to get money for them. There is a new regime for small-scale miners, we will not burn your seized excavators.

In 2021 President Akufo-Addo gave his explicit support for the demolition of equipment, including excavators, employed in illegal mining activities.

He emphasized that the demolition of such equipment, which contributes to water pollution and deforestation, will continue until these unlawful practices are brought to a halt.

In a direct challenge to dissenting opinions, he urged individuals with contrary beliefs to seek recourse through legal channels, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law in addressing this issue.

“I say with all the emphasis at my command, that no rights can accrue to or flow from the criminal venture of galamsey. The equipment which is being used for an illegal or criminal purpose cannot confirm on the owner or any other person any rights whatsoever,” he said.

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, led a powerful party delegation to Ejisu in the Ashanti Region for the one-week funeral observation of the late MP for Ejisu and Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah.

Thousands of mourners from the region gathered in his hometown, Onwe, for the traditional remembrance preceding the main funeral.

As news of Dr. Bawumia’s arrival spread, scores of people rushed out to catch a glimpse of him. Many led him in a slow procession from the main street to the funeral ground, chanting his name.

Accompanied by his wife, Samira, Dr. Bawumia exchanged pleasantries with dignitaries, including traditional rulers.

The atmosphere turned emotional when the Vice President reached the dais reserved for family members of the deceased, including his mother and wife. Dr. Bawumia gave the late MP’s mother, who was in uncontrollable tears, a warm embrace before consoling other family members.

The Vice President’s delegation included Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare; NPP National Chairman, Steven Ntim; NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua; Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State; MPs; Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako; Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah; and several government appointees.

I have achieved more as vice president than Mahama did as president – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has confidently asserted that he has fulfilled all his pledges, showcasing his readiness to lead the nation in the upcoming December general elections.

Dr. Bawumia declares that over 30 initiatives he promised have been successfully implemented.

During an address to traders in Sunyani, Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia warns against endorsing John Dramani Mahama in the forthcoming elections.

Reflecting on his achievements, Dr. Bawumia underscores his dedication to keeping his promises, drawing comparisons between his accomplishments and Mahama’s tenure as former president.

He cites achievements such as the successful implementation of the Ghana Card initiative and the issuance of the card to newborns as evidence of his administration’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized, “I have never been a president. I am just the vice president. I have really worked. My opponent has been a president before but I have really delivered on my promises.

“When I said we would roll out the Ghana Card, we delivered. When I said children would be issued with the Ghana card at birth, it was fulfilled.”

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia asserts that he has nearly fulfilled all his promises, underscoring the importance of supporting his leadership bid in the 2024 elections.

He highlighted approximately thirty initiatives he pledged and successfully implemented during his seven-year tenure as vice president.

Addressing traders’ associations and magazine leaders in Sunyani, Bono Ahafo Region, on Wednesday (27 March), Bawumia cautioned against voting for the NDC.

“I have never been a president, I’m just the vice-president, but I have really worked. My opponent has been a president before, but I have really delivered on my promises.”

“When I said we will roll out Ghana Card, we delivered. When I said children will be issued with Ghana Card at birth, it has come to pass. When I promised a digital address system it was fulfilled…..”

“When I said we will introduce a paperless port, it came to pass, when I said Zipline will deliver medicines with drones in Ghana, it was fulfilled . . . I promised removing ghost names from government payroll, we executed it…,” Bawumia said.

Those who queued and voted for Akufo-Addo, Bawumia are to blame for this “nonsense” – Pablo

The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo Esq., also known as Pablo, has blamed Ghanaian electorates for the current energy sector crisis the country is experiencing.

According to him, if Ghanaians had voted for the NDC’s John Mahama and not the New Patriotic Party’s Akufo-Addo, the country would have been spared from the erratic power supply being experienced.

He made this statement in a post on X while reacting to a report indicating the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has started an exercise to check on various power transformers across the country to identify and fix faults that can help sustain power.

“I blame y’all for this nonsense. Y’all who queued and voted for Akuffo Addo and Bawumia twice are accomplices of this sheer disrespect to our intelligence.”

He chastised the governing party for disrespecting Ghanaians by failing to admit that the country is experiencing “dumsor” owing to mismanagement of the energy sector.

Mr Opare Addo also condemned the government for failing to pay the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) what it owes them. He believes the current erratic power supply is due to debt owed IPPs and not faulty distribution transformers.

“You’re shedding load because you’ve incompetently mismanaged the energy sector yet you wouldn’t take responsibility and fix things. Pay the IPP’s, it’s not faulty distribution transformers!”

The power sector is likely to experience an exacerbated debt of about $1.8 billion to the Independent Power Producers by 2024, the Chamber of Independent Power Generators has disclosed.

Meanwhile, ECG’s integrity checks on the transformers will help identify actual loads and others that need upgrades upon reaching their full capacity.

NPP running mate position “is not up for contest”, frontrunners will be disappointed – John Boadu

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has asserted that the position of running mate within the party is not open to competition.

He dismissed the idea that lobbying or vying for the position would be successful, stating that the final decision rests with the National Council of the party.

“The presidential candidate has a preference but if the National Council rejects it, he has to elect a new person,” the former NPP scribe said on Accra-based Peace FM.

Boadu’s remarks come amidst speculation and debates over potential candidates for the position of running mate to NPP’s flagbearer and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Some of the prominent figures considered as contenders include Energy Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Adutwum, Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and Member of Parliament for Bekwai Joseph Osei Owusu.

Boadu emphasized that even if the flagbearer has a preference for a running mate, the National Council has the authority to make the final decision, suggesting that the leading contenders may be disappointed when the official announcement is made.

John Boadu expressed that the choice for the NPP’s running mate will be someone who can support Dr. Bawumia and the party in retaining power and achieving the goal of breaking the eight-year cycle.

GRA harassing businesses in its revenue mobilisation exercise – Traders Advocacy Group Ghana

The Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has come to the defense of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent criticisms against the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), asserting that the authority has unfairly targeted local businesses in its tax collection efforts.

In a press release issued on March 27, 2024, TAGG supported Bawumia’s statements, alleging that the GRA’s revenue collection initiatives have led to what they describe as the “harassment” of businesses nationwide.

TAGG accused the GRA of employing tactics that pose a threat to the survival of local businesses.

Key concerns include allegations of extortion and harassment by GRA officials, particularly through the deployment of task forces to monitor traders and seize goods and cargo post-clearance at ports.

Moreover, TAGG asserts that traders often face unjust tax evaluations and are required to pay amounts that surpass their capital for taxes they do not fully understand.

“We, members of the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) wish to affirm the statement made by His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of the Republic, that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been harassing businesses in its revenue mobilisation drive.

“The Vice President, in our view, couldn’t have said it any better because his pronouncement is a true reflection of daily happenings in the business community. And the statement Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has issued before.

“We, therefore, find the statement released by the Ghana Revenue Authority Workers Union (GRAWU) of the GRA which seeks to rebut the assertion of the Vice President most unfortunate and misleading to the trading public,” part of the press statement, which was signed by President of the group, Kwdwo Amoateng said.

Furthermore, they underscore GRA officials’ intrusive conduct, such as stationing themselves at shops to oversee customer flow, contending that this discourages potential customers and undermines business sustainability.

TAGG has urged pertinent stakeholders, including the GRA, to promptly address these concerns, stressing the imperative for a tax system that is conducive to business growth, fostering both revenue generation for the state and the development of local enterprises.

“As members of the business community who have been victims of the incessant harassment by the GRA over the years in the name of collecting revenue for the State, we deem it necessary to put out the facts and chastise GRAWU for debunking what is the obvious truth.

    “To help Ghanaians appreciate the level of frustration we continue to suffer at the hands of the officials of GRA, we wish to state some of our concerns as follows;

“Extortion and harassment by GRA officials: So many task forces are deployed to monitor traders when GRA could leverage on cutting-edge systems,” the statement added.

This announcement is issued in direct response to a statement issued by the Ghana Revenue Authority Workers Union (GRAWU), which aimed to contest the Vice President’s claims.

Fire Academy at Duayaw Nkwanta launched by Bawumia

Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated a Fire Academy and Training School in Duayaw Nkwanta, Tano North Municipality, Ahafo Region, the third of its kind in Ghana after those in James Town and Wungu.

The facility boasts a three-storey administration block, dormitories, classrooms, dining hall, canteen, and advanced training equipment, marking a significant milestone for the Middle Belt region.

At the inauguration, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the government’s recruitment of over 7,000 fire service personnel in seven years, an 88% increase from previous years, showcasing a commitment to enhancing service capabilities.

He emphasized the government’s dedication to recruit more personnel to meet international standards, striving for a fireman ratio of 1:800.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia underscored efforts to equip the GNFS with modern resources, including command vehicles, fire engines, drones, and personal protective equipment, ensuring efficient emergency response.

The Chief Fire Officer expressed concern over mob attacks on personnel and hoax calls, hindering effective service delivery. In response, training programs at the academy aim to equip trainees with diverse firefighting and rescue skills.

The Ankobeahene of Duayaw Nkwanta Traditional Area appealed for the school to be named after the late Nana Boakye Tromo III, whose council released land for the establishment of the academy in 2015.

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, the Campaign Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Dan Kwaku Botwe, has announced that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will soon convene with the National Council of the party to initiate the process of selecting his running mate for the upcoming elections.

Mr. Botwe emphasized that the NPP remains unified in the selection of the running mate. Speaking to journalists at the inauguration of the Ashanti Region NPP campaign team, he stated, “we are not divided at all, we have had successful polling station elections, successful electoral elections, successful constituency elections, successful regional elections, successful national elections, and successful presidential elections, we are united and we will do it at the right time. We have done it before in 1992, 96, 2000, 2008, we did it, so it is not an issue at all.

He further clarified, “At the appropriate time, the presidential candidate will meet the national council and we shall have a discussion and we will name the running mate, so far as I am concerned there is no contest for a running mate.”

Meanwhile, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), the Ashanti Region Chairman of the NPP, assured the party of breaking the 8-year electoral cycle.

“Dr Bawumia will win the elections, and we shall break the 8,” he said.

The three MPs allegedly being considered as Bawumia’s running mate

Leading up to the December 2024 general elections, speculation is rife regarding the potential vice-presidential running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to asaaseradio.com, attention is drawn to three NPP members, all serving as cabinet ministers and holding parliamentary seats.

These contenders include Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, representing the Bosomtwe Constituency and serving as the Minister for Education; Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, representing the Manhyia South Constituency and serving as the Minister for Energy; and Bryan Acheampong, representing the Abetifi Constituency and serving as the Minister for Food and Agriculture.

A striking commonality among these potential vice-presidential candidates is their Christian faith and their origins in the southern regions of Ghana.

This alignment mirrors the NPP’s historical practice, except for 1996 when it formed an alliance with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), ensuring a balance between Christian and Muslim representation.

Typically, the NPP’s presidential ticket features candidates from either the northern or southern regions, often from Akan regions like Ashanti and Eastern.

Given Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s background in the North East Region, selecting any of these candidates would uphold the party’s commitment to maintaining this historical balance.

Among them, Dr. Bryan Acheampong stands out as the youngest, born on November 27, 1972, at fifty-one years old.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s diverse background encompasses military service, entrepreneurship, and academia, showcasing a versatile skill set.

On the other hand, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, born on May 23, 1968, is currently fifty-six years old, while Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum will turn sixty on April 9, 2024.

Each candidate brings extensive experience and expertise to the table. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, renowned in education, has founded charter schools in the United States and held various educational roles.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a medical doctor, has held prominent positions in healthcare and government, including a role in President Akufo-Addo’s cabinet.

  • ‘We will not fall for your deceit-induced campaign promises’ – Importers and Exporters to Bawumia

‘We will not fall for your deceit-induced campaign promises’ – Importers and Exporters to Bawumia

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his recent comments regarding the operations of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Dr. Bawumia accused the GRA of harassing businesses under the guise of tax collection during a dialogue with members of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

These discussions were part of the manifesto committee’s efforts to gather input for the upcoming 2024 elections.

The Vice President attributed the issue to the GRA’s practice of setting unattainable targets for its officers, leading them to impose excessive taxes on established businesses.

In response, the Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit, issued a statement on Monday, March 25, 2024, cautioning that they would not be influenced by Dr. Bawumia’s tactics for a third time.

The Association called on the Vice President to apologize to the business community for his failure to fulfill promises.

“Ghanaian Importers and Exporters would like to tell the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his likes that, we will not fall victim to their shenanigans for the third time. We will judge him and others based on their performance and not on deceit-induced campaign promises which will end up becoming another mirage,” the Association stated.

They emphasized their determination not to be deceived by Dr. Bawumia’s unfulfilled pledges as a tactic to secure votes in the forthcoming December elections.

The statement also expressed that, instead, “We expect the Vice President to apologize to the business community for failing to uphold his campaign commitments and not resort to last-minute populist gestures.”

Moreover, the Association underscored that over the past six years, Dr. Bawumia has remained silent on this and other crucial issues, failing to urge the GRA to review its tax collection methods. This lack of action has resulted in the departure of numerous businesses from the country.

“The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana can best describe the Vice President’s recent stand as a populist attempt to redeem his image in the eyes of the business community, considering the fact that he as a Vice president kept mute on this issue among other issues for the past 6 years failing to prompt the Ghana Revenue Authority on the need to change their modus of tax collection which has forced many businesses out of the country,” it noted.

Nevertheless, the Ghana Revenue Authority Workers’ Union (GRAWU) voiced their dissatisfaction with a statement allegedly made by Dr. Bawumia suggesting that the GRA is mistreating taxpayers.

“Dr Bawumia will not be your chewing stick! Keep his name out of your mouth!” – Salam Mustapha ‘warns’ Hopeson Adorye

The National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Salam Mustapha, has issued a stern warning to Hopeson Adorye, the Director of Special Duties for the Movement for Change, regarding his criticism of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a recent Facebook post, Salam Mustapha condemned what he described as harsh attacks by Hopeson on Dr. Bawumia, who is the NPP’s flagbearer.

Referring to their past association during Hopeson Adorye’s tenure as an NPP member, Salam cautioned that he would not hesitate to set aside their relationship in response to Hopeson’s assaults on Dr. Bawmumia.

“Myself and you have known each other for a very long time, at least since 2011 there about. We have done so many operations together, some were very sensitive. We worked together in the famous Young Patriots team which took on the NDC in those vile days of vitriolic language on Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with the likes of the late John Kumah. In short, you know so well.

“Today, my message to you is simple. Take Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia out of your mouth. He will not be your chewing stick. No. He will not. I will put my brotherhood with you aside and we will do it the young patriots way if you attack our Flagbearer again,” excerpts of his post read.

The youth organiser also stated that while he holds respect for the Flagbearer of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, a former senior member of the NPP, he is prepared to reciprocate Hopeson Adorye’s actions.

“You have a presidential candidate, we have not attacked him. It is just out of respect for him but that can be thrown to the dogs. And he will feel taste of the medicine you’re giving to our Flagbearer. You know me, this is the nicest I can be,” he added.

Responding to this, Hopeson Adorye challenged Salam Mustapha, saying “Bring it on my brother.”

Hopeson Adorye recently criticised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his inability to stabilize the Ghana cedi against major trading currencies, despite promising to do so while in opposition.

In a Facebook post on March 25, 2024, he directly targeted Bawumia, remarking, “He was restoring the value of the cedi in 2014 in opposition but cannot restore the value in government.”

  • Running mate selection causing tension in the party – NPP member

Running mate selection causing tension in the party – NPP member

Founder of Patriot Ghana, a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group, Kwesi Korang, claims that the process of selecting the party’s running mate has caused division, exacerbating existing rifts within the NPP.

His remarks differ from those of Dan Botwe, the campaign chairman of the NPP, who has denied allegations that pressure exists on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, to choose a running mate.

Korang insists that there is pressure on the presidential candidate to finalize his running mate, leading to internal discord within the party.

Botwe maintains that there is no division within the party and that the announcement of the running mate will occur at the appropriate time.

In contrast, Mr Korang, speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, asserts that there is a power struggle over the running mate selection process.

He suggests that the Vice President is facing pressure to choose a candidate from the Ashanti Region, a situation that has exacerbated party divisions as members vie for the position.

Korang warns that if not addressed properly, this situation could jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.

He recommends that the Vice President consider candidates from outside the Kumasi region to avoid alienating certain party members.

Furthermore, he cautions against selecting a running mate solely based on regional considerations, as this could lead to resentment among party supporters.

Instead, Korang advocates for choosing a running mate based on competence, skills, dedication, and the ability to attract votes necessary for the NPP’s victory in the elections.

“We are not divided at all. There is no sign that we are divided.

“We have had successful polling station elections, successful electoral area elections, successful constituency elections, successful regional elections, successful national elections, and successful presidential elections.

“We are united. We will do it at the right time, and we will name the running mate. So far as I’m concerned, there is no contest for running mate,” Dan Botwe said.

  • You introduced those taxes, don’t blame GRA for your mess – Minority goes hard on Bawumia

You introduced those taxes, don’t blame GRA for your mess – Minority goes hard on Bawumia

The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for his recent comments regarding the revenue mobilization methods employed by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

During a meeting with the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Bawumia expressed concerns about the alleged misuse of tax collection by GRA staff, citing it as a pretext for harassing businesses.

The NDC MPs have deemed Dr. Bawumia’s remarks unsubstantial, particularly considering his position as the Vice President of the country.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, March 26, and signed by their leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, they emphasized the importance of accountability. They urged Dr Bawumia and the government to acknowledge their role in creating what they perceive as a high tax regime.

The Minority expressed surprise at Dr. Bawumia’s public criticism of the GRA, arguing that the authority is simply fulfilling its constitutionally mandated duty of tax enforcement.

Additionally, they argued that the Akufo-Addo administration’s policies of excessive taxation have made Ghana a less appealing destination for business activities.

“It is shocking to note that Alhaji Bawumia had the audacity to single out GRA workers for attack and condemnation after the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government had imposed a lot of taxes on businesses and Ghanaians.”

“The government’s huge appetitie for taxes has created a high tax regime which has made the country unattractive for doing business. It is therefore not surprising that many businesses in Ghana are relocating to other countries in the West African sub-region. This spells doom and gloom for Ghanaian employees as jobs which would have otherwise been filled by them get exported as a consequence of the relocation of businesses from the country.”

Organized Labour, in a statement dated Friday, March 22, 2024, has labeled Dr. Bawumia’s comments as “unfortunate,” viewing them as a discrediting of the dedicated efforts of GRA employees.

They cautioned that such remarks could lead to worker dissatisfaction, hinder revenue collection, and incite industrial unrest.

The group urged the Vice President to acknowledge the significant strides made by the GRA or refrain from making remarks that undermine their efforts.

They also highlighted the inconsistency in Dr. Bawumia’s position, considering his leadership role in the Economic Management Team and his knowledge of the government’s targets for the Authority through the Ministry of Finance.

“We would like to state unequivocally that, we the workers of GRA find this statement unfortunate and consider it as an attack on the efforts of the hard-working staff of the Authority which if not discontinued, would incur the displeasure of workers, disrupt revenue collection efforts and breed industrial disharmony.”

  • 2024 election: Bawumia will lose should his running mate come from Ashanti region – NPP member

2024 election: Bawumia will lose should his running mate come from Ashanti region – NPP member

The leader of Patriot Ghana, a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) organization, has emphatically stated that the party stands to lose the 2024 presidential election if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia selects his running mate from the Ashanti Region.

During an appearance on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s Frontlines on March 25, 2024, Kwesi Korang asserted that the party’s success and its ability to break the 8-year electoral cycle hinge on Bawumia’s decisions. Thus, he urged caution in the selection process for a running mate.

“Our victory as a party depends on Bawumia. He is our candidate, and whatever he does will affect our victory. I want to state categorically, without mincing words, that if he selects a running mate from the Ashanti Region, we will lose the 2024 presidential election.

“Let me also state it this way: if he should select somebody or a politician who is based in the Ashanti Region, he will lose the elections.

“I want listeners to listen to my analysis well. If he chooses someone who is Ashanti but does not reside there and does not do his politics in the region but in other regions, he will win the elections,” he said.

He elaborated further, stating, “If Bawumia selects a politician who resides in the Ashanti Region, regardless of their ethnicity, our chances of winning diminish. However, if the chosen candidate is Ashanti but conducts their political activities in other regions, victory is achievable.”

Korang emphasized that even if the selected individual is not of Ashanti descent but is known as a political figure in the region, the party would still face electoral defeat.

He expressed concern over ongoing power struggles in the Ashanti Region regarding the vice-presidential candidacy, warning that selecting a running mate from the region could lead to apathy among party members and hinder campaign efforts in the 2024 elections.

“Some people would be offended and bitter and refuse to support the party in campaigning in the 2024 elections. And so, we have to tread cautiously,” he added.

  • Bawumia who has crippled Ghana’s public debt cannot be made president – NDC

Bawumia who has crippled Ghana’s public debt cannot be made president – NDC

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Salim Adams has cautioned Ghanaians against voting for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

Taking to the X platform he described Dr Bawumia as the “so-called Economic Messiah” who should not be trusted to turn Ghana’s economic woes around.

He added that during the flagbearer of the NDC’s, John Dramani Mahama’s tenure, Ghana’s public debt in 2016 was 120 billion but 610 billion under the NPP government.

According to him Bawumia has nothing to offer when he assumes the presidency of the country as he has already failed in  delegating his roles as the vice-president.

“From Nkrumah to Mahama, our public debt was 120 billion in 2016. Today, it’s a shocking 610 billion under #Bawuliar, the so-called Economic Messiah. How can anyone trust such reckless leadership? Voting for him is a betrayal of our future,” he wrote.

His comment is in line with recent revelations regarding Ghana’s public debt which have stirred significant apprehension and debate across the nation.

According to the March 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana, Ghana’s public debt surged to GH¢610 billion ($52.4 billion) by the end of 2023. This marks an increase of GH¢42.7 billion from September 2023 to December 2023, following a decrease of GH¢14.2 billion recorded between June 2023 and September 2023, bringing the debt to GH¢567.3 billion ($51.0 billion).

The total public debt now represents 72.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), indicating that the country’s debt situation remains challenging despite the completion of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme during the period.

While the domestic debt rose by GH¢19.1 billion, the external debt climbed by GH¢23.6 billion, primarily due to the depreciation of the cedi.

Data from the Central Bank further disclosed that the external component of the total public debt reached $30.1 billion (¢350.3 billion) in December 2023, accounting for 41.6% of GDP. Meanwhile, the domestic debt stood at ¢259.7 billion in December 2023, equivalent to approximately 30.1% of GDP.

However, the report omitted information regarding the financial sector resolution debt and other liabilities such as the energy sector debt.

  • Akufo-Addo has the right to withhold assent to”unconstitutional” anti-gay bill – Dennis Miracles

Akufo-Addo has the right to withhold assent to”unconstitutional” anti-gay bill – Dennis Miracles

The Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has indicated that the government does not oppose the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values (anti-gay) bill, pending the approval of President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on TV3, he emphasized that the bill is a complex issue and requires thorough assessment to avoid potential future repercussions.

“The law has been passed it’s a law purely passed based on consensus, largely by everybody across the political divide. On the floor of the house there was a complete consensus on the passage of the law, there were members of parliaments raised issues of amendments in the law and these amendments were either carried or thrown away, but in principle nobody from the NPP or the NDC side has been against the passage of the anti-LGBTQ law and that is a fact and the law has been approved by parliament,” he stated.

Mr Aboagye explained that one of the procedural steps for signing the bill involves President Akufo-Addo raising concerns, which must be addressed by Parliament before the bill can become law.

He further noted that the process concludes when any amendments and embedded sanctions in the bill are unanimously accepted by both Parliament and the President.

“It has to be transmitted to the president for the president to assent to it or otherwise or raise concerns don’t forget when it is transmitted to the president it is not only assenting to the law but the president can communicate back to parliament on areas of concern.

“It’s not as if the whole process ends at the point where parliament transmits to the president and the only thing left  is for the president to assent. The president under the law is mandated to look at it and then areas of concern he can write to parliament and say that I have received the law but I think that you should look at ABCD and parliament also under the same law can look at the issues raised by the president,” he added.

Parliament passed the anti-LGBTQ bill on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Once enacted into law, it will criminalize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding in Ghana.

However, President Akufo-Addo clarified on Monday, March 4, that the anti-LGBTQI bill has not yet reached his office.

Despite concerns within diplomatic circles, he assured that the bipartisan approval of the bill by Parliament will not compromise Ghana’s human rights record.

Addressing anxieties about any potential shift in Ghana’s stance on human rights and the rule of law, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his commitment to upholding these principles.

While refraining from discussing the bill’s origin, pending on his desk, he acknowledged a constitutional challenge filed at the Supreme Court regarding the proposed legislation.

The President urged patience, suggesting that everyone await the court’s decision before taking any action.

He underscored the importance of Ghanaian state institutions in shaping the future trajectory of rule of law and human rights compliance in the country.

  • Mahama will not be accountable to you because he has just one more term left – Bawumia

Mahama will not be accountable to you because he has just one more term left – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized his commitment to accountability if elected president.

During the NPP International Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, he contrasted his approach with that of his main contender, former President John Mahama, whom he suggested would not be as accountable because Mahama has stated he would not seek re-election.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted his lack of prior presidency, explaining that this would make him more accountable to Ghanaians as he would have the opportunity to seek re-election and be judged by the people again. This, he argued, contrasts with Mahama’s situation, as Mahama has indicated he will serve only one term in office.

“Apart from my proven track record as Vice President, hard work, credibility and vision for the future of Ghana, another reason I should be voted for is that I will be more accountable to the people of Ghana than John Mahama.” Dr. Bawumia said.

“As President, I will be more accountable because I will have another opportunity to seek the mandate of the people after 2024. Mahama has just one term and he will not come back to Ghanaians to seek re-elections so he will not be accountable,” Dr. Bawumia added.

Article 66 of the 1992 Constitution indicates the following:

    (1) A person elected as President shall, subject to clause (3) of this article, hold office for a term of four years beginning from the date on which he is sworn in as President.

    (2) A person shall not be elected to hold office as President of Ghana for more than two terms.

    (3) The office of President shall become vacant—

    (a) on the expiration of the period specified in clause (1) of this article; or

    (b) if the incumbent dies or resigns from office or ceases to hold office under article 69 of this Constitution.

The late Atta-Mills passed away in July 2012, and as such his then Vice President, Mahama became President due to the vacancy left. He completed Mills’ tenure and in 2013, managed to win the elections to be elected President. He lost the seat to now President Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections. As such he governed Ghana for one term and per the constitution he is entitled to another as he laces his boots for the 2024 elections.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for Ghana to have a leader with credibility and a proven track record to address generational problems and combat corruption. He asserted that his record as Vice President demonstrates his ability to solve problems and advocate against corruption through the policies he has championed.

“Ghana needs problem solvers, generational thinkers and people with innovative ideas,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted several key policy initiatives he has led that are addressing long-standing issues in Ghana. These include the digital national identity system, the national property address system, mobile money interoperability, and the digitalization of public services. He also mentioned the delivery of essential drugs to remote areas through drones and initiatives like One Ambulance One Constituency and Agenda 111 hospitals.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized his strong commitment to fighting corruption, stating that the digitalization of public services has been instrumental in this effort. He contrasted this with what he perceives as a lack of action from former President Mahama, suggesting that tangible steps, not just rhetoric, are needed to combat corruption effectively.

“What policies did former President Mahama initiate to fight corruption as President or Vice President? If you ask him, he cannot state one because he was not committed to fighting corruption as Vice President and President.”

“I am a problem solver and a generational thinker with innovative ideas. I have a solid track record as Vice-President to prove it,” he added.
