    The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, affirmed the government’s dedication to equipping certain public universities in the country to conduct mineral exploration.

    He emphasized that resources would be allocated to the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), UMAT, and the Geological Survey Department to enable the nation to maximize the benefits of its mineral resources.

    Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during the Third Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining organized by UENR in Fiapre, Sunyani West Municipality.

    The event, themed “Charting our country mining vision and the future of illegal mining,” aimed to foster effective approaches to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment and forest cover.

    The Vice President highlighted the government’s efforts to collaborate with relevant institutions and traditional authorities to formalize the small-scale mining sector.

    This collaboration includes providing licenses to promote responsible mining and facilitate the identification and operation of miners. Dr. Bawumia emphasized that empowering small-scale miners would significantly contribute to employment in the country.

    Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, Vice-Chancellor of UENR, underscored the destructive impact of illegal mining and called for concerted actions to address the issue.

    He urged stakeholders, including government agencies, traditional authorities, and academia, to collaborate effectively in the fight against illegal mining.

    Prof. Asare-Bediako also highlighted the university’s contributions to combating the menace through sustainable mining and environmental reclamation programs.

    Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed a significant increase in revenue collection at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following the government’s digitalization initiatives.

    Dr. Bawumia credited the surge in ECG’s revenue collection to the digitalization of its operations, noting that monthly collections rose from GHC450 million to over a billion.

    Addressing the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, Dr. Bawumia urged other member states to adopt Ghana’s approach of utilizing digital tools to combat corruption.

    He expressed dismay over the introduction of malware into the system during its initial stages by ECG staff in the IT department.

    Dr. Bawumia highlighted this transformation as a testament to the efficacy of digitalization in enhancing efficiency and curbing corruption.

    “Can you believe that workers within the system sabotaged it, they put ransomware into the whole system. And the system essentially collapsed. We had to send in national security to eventually find that it was some of the staff at the IT department who were culpable.

    He stressed, “We found the computer in which the ransomware was injected into the system. It took us a while to restore the system. They asked for a ransom actually for this to work. Can you imagine? That we should pay, they submitted a bill that we should pay for the system to work. Anyway, they were arrested.

    “And we restored the system, and we digitized the system, and we said that no more cash payments for electricity in Ghana. You only pay with your mobile money or electronic bank transfers. So that is now the case. Can you believe that from GHC450 million a month, the collection has now gone to over a billion cedis a month?” he asked.

    With the escalating integration of digitalization into both governmental services and daily life, along with intentions to implement the utmost levels of data security within these services, Ghana is swiftly progressing towards becoming the premier blockchain-powered government in Africa and among the select few globally, as announced by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

    “We are going to adopt blockchain technology for government to ensure that all data and transactions in the Government space are transparent and tamper-proof, no one can change them, and so ours could well become the first blockchain-powered government in Africa” the Vice President stated in Accra on Thursday, 9th May, 2024.

    Speaking in Accra on Thursday, May 9, 2024, Dr. Bawumia outlined a brighter, more secure digital future for Ghana during his keynote address at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference and Annual General Meeting of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa.

    The conference, attended by representatives from 20 African countries and global anti-corruption bodies, serves as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to combatting corruption through digital means.

    Dr. Bawumia highlighted significant achievements in Ghana’s digitalization journey, noting that nearly all government agencies (1507 out of 1517) have been integrated into the Ghana.gov digital platform.

    This platform enables electronic access to almost all government services, with electronic payments replacing cash transactions.

    Notably, Ghana.gov has already collected GHC 201 billion for the government, significantly reducing revenue leakages caused by corruption.

    Moving forward, Ghana aims to integrate databases through the X-Road Integration infrastructure, similar to Estonia, and implement blockchain technology across all government sectors.

    This blockchain integration ensures the rapid and immutable identification of data modifications, effectively blocking corruption and enabling the tracking and tracing of all government transactions.

    Vice President Bawumia emphasized the devastating impact of corruption on Africa, estimating losses of at least one trillion US dollars ($1 trillion) over the past five years. To combat this scourge, he urged African governments to invest in digital tools, including digital forensics, to disrupt corruption networks and enhance anti-corruption efforts.

    In Ghana, digitalization of public service processes, reduction of human interface, and digital payment systems have already reduced opportunities for bribery and revenue leakages. By further implementing digital platforms and systems, Ghana aims to disrupt corruption networks and curb poverty and underdevelopment in Africa.

    Dr. Bawumia concluded by urging collective action to leverage digital tools to track, trace, and disrupt the entire corruption value chain, thereby providing the continent with a fighting chance against corruption in all its forms.

    Leader of the Movement for Change (M4C), Alan Kyerematen, dismissed promises made by New Patriotic Party flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia regarding Ghana’s mineral resources as mere political rhetoric.

    Dr. Bawumia, on a campaign tour of the Bono region, vowed to ensure 100% Ghanaian ownership of mineral resources if elected into power.

    He voiced concerns about the current framework of Ghana’s mining sector, suggesting it creates the impression that Ghanaians do not fully own the country’s minerals.

    However, Kyerematen, an Independent Presidential Candidate, rebuffed the vice president’s promise in an interview with the Chronicle Newspaper, labelling it as political propaganda.

    He argued that, by law, minerals already belong to the citizens. Referring to Article 257 (6) of the 1992 Constitution, Kyerematen highlighted that all mineral resources in their natural state within Ghana and its territorial waters are vested in the President on behalf of the Ghanaian people.

    He clarified that this encompasses both solid and liquid minerals, with specific laws governing access and management.

    The former trade minister said: “So, Ghanaians already own 100% of their mineral resources by law.

    The impression being created by the Vice President that he will make Ghanaians own 100% of their natural resources is misleading and amounts to populist propaganda,” he stated.

    Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) hindered the government’s efforts to digitize revenue collection.

    Under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, the government has prioritized digitalization initiatives, with Dr. Bawumia playing a central role in driving these efforts forward.

    Speaking at the Annual AGM of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that certain individuals within the IT unit at ECG introduced ransomware into the system to disrupt its functionality.

    He elaborated that this ransomware caused a collapse of the system, necessitating intervention from national security to identify and address the individuals responsible for the sabotage.

    Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, has revealed his intentions to create a minerals development bank should he win the upcoming December elections.

    This initiative aims to offer financial support to mining projects within Ghana.

    During the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that this policy would prevent foreign mining companies from exporting all their earnings, thereby boosting the local economy.

    “We also want to, as I said, in collaboration with the relevant state institutions like MIIF, PMMC, the Bank of Ghana, the private sector and others, we want to establish a minerals development bank to finance viable local mineral projects and to mitigate foreign financing of local mining projects, which leads to heavy smuggling of the produce afterwards.”

    National Democratic Congress (NDC) activist and supporter Yayra Koku has accused President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Bawumia of being “trained scammers.”

    Yayra made these allegations in a tweet on May 8, 2024, accompanied by pictures of the president dining with voters using the same plates and earthenware bowls. Another image shows the president drinking sachet water with groundnuts.

    According to Yayra, these actions were “acts of humility” orchestrated by the president to deceive Ghanaians into voting for him in 2016 when he was desperate for power.

    “”When Akufo-Addo wanted power from Ghanaians, he did this. Drinking pure water with groundnut, eating ampesie with ordinary voters etc. Upon receiving the power, he is instructing the Chiefs to rise and acknowledge him. He does not respect anyone” he fumed.

    On his part,Dr. Bawumia, who is the flagbearer of the NPP, is adopting the same ploy into tricking Ghanaians to vote for him citing a video of Dr. Bawumia greeting nobles at a function, where he shook their hands and bowed as a sign of respect.

    “I am not surprised that his mate BawuLiar is doing the same to trick Ghanaians. I saw a video of him almost on the ground, greeting chiefs. Like Driver, Mate. These people are trained SCAMMERS” he added.

    Former Deputy General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has taken a swipe at the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

    In a post on X, he criticised Mr Mahama for allegedly not actively campaigning day and night as his closest contender, NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia does ahead of the 2024 elections.

    “Bawumia is campaigning day and night and making use of 24hrs: where is the 24hr economy man? He is nowhere to be found yet he is expecting us to vote for him. Wishful thinking!”

    It is unknown if, indeed, Mr Mahama does not campaign at night, as alleged by Mr Anyidoho.

    The 24-hour economy policy has been proposed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

    Mahama has defended the party’s proposal to create a conducive environment for a 24-hour economy, asserting that it is a well-thought-through idea.

    Mr Mahama, speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Network Business Cocktail, reiterated that the idea is a game-changer due to careful consideration. He pledged that a potential NDC administration would actively pursue projects and programs to transition Ghana into a fully-fledged 24-hour economy by optimizing existing resources.

    Mahama outlined that the 24-hour economy aligns with the NDC’s vision to build the desired Ghana, focusing on creating an industrialized, inclusive, and resilient economy with well-paying jobs. The vision also includes developing safe communities, protecting the natural environment, building effective institutions, and enhancing Ghana’s role in African and international affairs.

    The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has advised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against focusing solely on one particular region when selecting a running mate for the 2024 elections.

    The Dormahene expressed concerns about the potential repercussions of such a decision when Dr Bawumia, on Wednesday, May 8, engaged the Bono Regional House of Chiefs to seek their counsel and convey his campaign message.

    Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II explained that failure to consider qualified candidates from various regions could alienate voters from other regions and undermine the ruling party’s electoral prospects in the upcoming elections.

    “I have seen you haven’t selected a running mate yet, even if you have, I haven’t heard. Sometimes a certain region wants to prove that it is only from there that you are supposed to select your running mate,” he submitted.

    He continued, “But I don’t see it that way. Please, there are lots of people in the other regions, so if your focus goes on just one particular region, only they will vote for you and the rest of us will vote against you.”

    The Dormaahene gave a list of well-known locals and highlighted their qualifications for running mate.

    “Please, I want to plead with you, for me, I am in the Bono region, and we also have qualified candidates here. Even though I am not saying selecting others from other regions is not good, but we also want the best for our people, Martin Adjei Korsah, Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Kwaku Agyemang Manu all qualify for such positions,” he added.

    It is reported that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who hails from the Ashanti Region, is the front-runner in the race for the running mate title.

    Meanwhile, other schools of thought, including the immediate past Speaker of Parliament and a member of the governing New Patriotic Party’s Council of Elders, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, believe a running mate from the Ashanti Region is the best option for the ruling party should it want to break the 8-year governance cycle.

    Dr. Bawumia, reflecting on his presidential aspirations, acknowledged the initial skepticism surrounding the possibility of a Muslim candidate being elected within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    Despite these doubts, he highlighted that his successful candidacy defied expectations, representing a significant milestone in the party’s history.

    “My election as flagbearer of NPP is historic. It has never happened in Ghana. Many people doubted that a Muslim could be a presidential candidate, but I said it is possible”said Dr Bawumia.

    “I want to become President for all to benefit. At first, those of us from the North thought we had been sidelined in the country’s governance. That’s why when I became Vice President I advocated for the Zongo development fund,” he added.

    “I will establish common-user processing facilities to facilitate mining in the various districts in the country,” Dr. Bawumia said.

    “Additionally, we shall establish Community Environmental Protection Assistants working under Minerals Commission/Environmental Protection Agency with River Wardens and local authorities to augment the safeguarding of our environment/water bodies,” he added.

    In search of NPP running mate, a case for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

    It is true that concerning the search for a running mate to the NPP flag bearer, several names have popped up as possible leading contenders. But, it is also true that the name, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (alias Napo), has popped up as the number one leading contender for this job.

    Political scientists and watchers have, rightly so, tipped the Energy Minister, as the most suitable candidate for the running mate job to help the NPP break the 8.

    In view of this, he [Napo] has become the primary target for all kinds of vicious propaganda and myths thrown at him by his critics both within and outside the party in a desperate attempt to water-down his chances.

    For the NDC, their biggest fear is that the selection of Napo as running mate will spell doom for their political fortunes particularly in the Ashanti Region and among young people across the country. In this piece, the writer shall be responding to these vicious propaganda, clearing the myths and setting the records straight, thus, making a solid case on why it has to be Napo.

    First, they say, Napo is ARROGANT, and that appears to be their biggest trump card against him. However, I say without doubt that any such description of Napo is highly misconceived, baseless and not supported by reality. In relation to this, what can be said of Napo which is factual is that, he is DECISIVE, BOLD, OUTSPOKEN, FIRM and has HUGE PRESENCE in everything he does.

    Unfortunately, in our part of the world, these attributes are easily misconstrued as signs of ARROGANCE, and the opposite of same often mistaken as signs of HUMILITY.

In this piece, the writer shall be responding to these vicious propaganda, clearing the myths and setting the records straight, thus, making a solid case on why it has to be Napo.

    First, they say, Napo is ARROGANT, and that appears to be their biggest trump card against him. However, I say without doubt that any such description of Napo is highly misconceived, baseless and not supported by reality. In relation to this, what can be said of Napo which is factual is that, he is DECISIVE, BOLD, OUTSPOKEN, FIRM and has HUGE PRESENCE in everything he does. Unfortunately, in our part of the world, these attributes are easily misconstrued as signs of ARROGANCE, and the opposite of same often mistaken as signs of HUMILITY.

    Napo has only become a victim of the former. Even his sense of humour is sometimes deliberately and mischievously misinterpreted by his critics as sign of arrogance. Anybody that objectively analyses the personality of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and his records in public and private life would certainly never associate him with arrogance. It is just not plausible to do that. Instead, the objective mind would say, Dr. Prempeh is down to earth but at the same time firm and decisive.

    It is this decisiveness and firmness of Napo that made him to successfully rollout the Free SHS policy (the BOLDEST social intervention in the nation’s education sector since Independence) within the first year of the Akufo-Addo government, at the time some senior members of the government were raising serious misgivings, claiming it was too early to do so. Again, it is Napo’s decisiveness and boldness that have ensured discipline in the nation’s petroleum industry and also guaranteed stable power supply in the country even during the period of unprecedented economic crisis.

    It would also be recalled that not long ago, Napo, as Energy Minister, properly exercised his oversight responsibility over the governing Board of the GNPC, chaired by Hon. Freddie Blay, the immediate past National Chairman of the governing NPP, who was then accused of offering interest in Ghana’s oil fields to a South African oil company, PetroSA. Napo gallantry insisted that the deal was not in the best interest of Ghana, and therefore ordered the Chairman to immediately cancel the offer.

    The Energy Minister’s position was later vindicated by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other think tanks in the petroleum sector. Certainly, only bold and decisive leaders can do that.
    There is, indeed, no gainsaying that what is needed from a leader is results, nothing more, nothing less. We need leaders that solve problems, and not leaders that only speak big English and project themselves as the citadel of humility. In any case, the contest for the presidency of a country is certainly NOT a HUMILITY CONTEST, else, we should make the National Chief Imam or the Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana the President of Ghana for life.

    Perish the thought; even if we were to assume WITHOUT ADMITTING that Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is who they claim he is, i.e. arrogant, what really does the serious business of governance got to do with such matters?… Issues of arrogance, humility or the lack of it. Governance is a serious business, one of bread and butter. It is the competence of the leader and his proven track record that should really matter. Leadership is simply about solving problems.

    I will, on any day, vote for a so-called arrogant leader who can provide me free education, affordable healthcare, stable electricity, good roads, good food and water, better economy, and, indeed, solve my problems. I will NOT vote for a leader who only comes to give me humility whilst I’m dying of hunger and getting overwhelmed with challenges. Martin Luther King Jnr. was right when he asseverated that, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in the moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge”.

    Another propaganda against Napo is the claim that he is desperate for the running mate job, and that, the overwhelming calls coming from the rank and file of the party for Napo to be made the running mate is self-induced. His critics also say, Napo has a Presidential ambition and so, he will undermine Bawumia’s presidency if he becomes the Vice President. How low can these people stoop in their inordinate quest to destroy a good man!

    First, Napo is not and cannot be said to be desperate for this running mate job. His commitment to the forward march of the NPP and Ghana goes beyond any desires for the Presidency of the country. He has demonstrated clearly that even if he is not nominated as running mate, he will work hard for the NPP to break the 8. He is focused on his job as MP for Manhyia South.

    In fact, he was the first person to file his nomination seeking reelection as MP. How can he be said to be desperate for running mate? It is however noteworthy that some of the things Napo has been doing all the time which often go unnoticed, if he does them now, people sometimes deliberately take pictures of him for mischief purposes. How unfortunate!

    Well, let it be placed on record that Napo has not changed at all. He remains the Napo we know all the time. The groundswell of endorsements he is receiving from the party’s rank and file is NOT self-induced. It is purely ORGANIC love for a man with an incredible kind heart. Napo’s generosity is legendary. His generosity does not also know any regional, religious or political divide. As a matter of fact, there cannot be an overestimation of the number of individuals and families he has supported and continues to support.

    How is it Napo’s fault when beneficiaries of his generous support come to share their stories in the media; stories of how Napo has transformed their lives and livelihoods.

    How is that self-induced? Indeed, what can be more natural and organic than that? The youth of the NPP and beyond love Napo to the core because he has rightly earned their love. Party executives from polling station to the national level love Napo because he has rightly earned their love. The entire Asanteman love Napo because he has rightly earned their love. He cannot be blamed for this.

    It is also not Napo’s fault that he is the MOST DECORATED MINISTER OF STATE, sweeping virtually every Award, local and international, for which he has been nominated. For the avoidance of doubt, Napo’s political and professional life is replete with meritorious Awards for EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP.

    He didn’t start receiving these Awards today, and therefore, his continuous receipt of these Awards cannot in anyway be linked with the running mate job. Indeed, throughout the tenure of this government, Napo has, year after year, been adjudged the MOST HARDWORKING MINISTER. It didn’t start today and it wouldn’t end today. Celebrating the DESERVING is not only a step in the right direction but also a moral obligation.

    On the claim that Napo has presidential ambition, hence should be disqualified, I say to the contrary, that, such ambition, if it really exists, is rather the very reason why Napo is the right man for this running mate job. A Vice President must always be someone who has ambition of succeeding his boss when his tenure ends.

    This is because, that ambition will be an extra motivating factor for the Vice President to work even harder for the success of his boss, since he [the Vice President] will be assessed based on the record of his boss’ administration and how much he has contributed to that record. A typical example is what we are seeing today in respect of the current Vice President and his boss.

    Having adequately responded to these baseless propaganda against Napo, I wish to seize the opportunity to reiterate my strong conviction that Napo is the most suitable candidate for the running mate job. Napo is deeply loved by young people in the party, and has the wherewithal to mobilize the support of the nation’s youth to help the NPP break the 8. It is noteworthy that Napo’s indomitable political influence goes beyond the Ashanti Region. He is a political colossus and a national asset for that matter.

    It should also be noted that the biggest threat to the NPP’s electoral fortunes in 2024 is really not the NDC and its flag bearer, but APATHY within the NPP. It is for this reason that the NPP flag bearer must nominate a running mate who is loved by the party’s core support base. Without a shred of doubt, Napo is that person. Per our constitutional architecture, political parties exist only to win general elections and govern. Napo has demonstrated that he has what it takes to help the NPP win the next elections and to also govern the country effectively.

    On account of the foregoing, it is evidently clear that the selection of Napo as our running mate will give the NPP the most POLITICAL CAPITAL in 2024. Our flag bearer should be encouraged to do the needful and NOT succumb to pressure from certain quarters that inexplicably think otherwise.

    Napo has the unflinching support of young people in the party. It is not for nothing that all my colleagues, NPP Regional Youth Organizers support Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s bid. It is not for nothing that the National Youth Wing of the Party supports Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s bid. Dr. Prempeh also has the overwhelming support of party executives across all levels.

    As party people, we are hungry to retain power in December 2024 for the prosperity of our party and nation. That is all that matters to us, and we cannot fail to deliver on this national duty. It doesn’t matter who helps us in this pursuit so long as it is not the devil. Further to the above cogent reasons in support of Napo, it is also worth making the point that our flag bearer is generally seen as calm and soft-spoken. He therefore needs an out-outspoken lieutenant to balance the ticket to be able to give the NDC a run for their money.

    Our flag bearer is also seen as a technocrat. He therefore needs a ‘career politician’ as his lieutenant in order to keep faith with the NPP’s age-long tradition of always presenting a presidential ticket made up of a career politician and a technocrat. Yet again, Napo is the answer. Anyway and anyhow you nuance the analysis, you will only find the answers in Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (alias Napo). We just cannot afford to get it wrong for the sake of our party and country.
    Long live the NPP and our dear Motherland, Ghana.

    Despite the career transition from Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana to politics, Dr. Bawumia saw it as an opportunity to contribute to Ghana’s development at the highest level and align with President Akufo-Addo’s vision.

    Regarding his repeated selection as running mate from 2008 to 2020, Dr. Bawumia attributes it to President Akufo-Addo’s recognition of his trustworthiness, loyalty, competence, and contributions to their electoral victories in 2016 and 2020.

    He views his performance as Vice President as a testament to his capabilities and suitability for the role.

    “I commend Vice President Bawumia for what he has been able to do with the digitalisation of our country. It is remarkable and very transformative- someting which is helping the country, particulalry the youth.”

    The Omanhemaa of Bechem Traditional Area, Nana Adwoapo Dwamena Serwaa II, praised Dr. Bawumia, stating that he is “destined to be the next President.” She pledged their support to help him achieve his vision.

    Additionally, the Omanhene of Goaso, Nana Akwasi Bosompra I, commended the NPP Government for various developmental projects in the Ahafo Region, particularly in Goaso. He attributed these developments to the creation of the new Ahafo Region by the NPP Government.

    The National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has revealed that the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John, had a vision for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become Ghana’s president.

    She expressed this during her criticism of Charles Owusu, a former associate of Sir John, for deciding to contest as an independent candidate for the Nkoranza parliamentary seat.

    Madam Gyamfua described Owusu’s decision as a betrayal of Sir John’s vision and the collective goals of the NPP. She warned that if Owusu’s independent candidacy led to the loss of the Nkoranza seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), she would not hesitate to take action against him.

    “It is up to him. You claimed to love Sir John, and one of Sir John’s visions was to see Bawumia become president. So why would you betray him?

    “If he makes a mistake for us to lose the seat to the NDC, he will see what I would do to him. But I don’t support him, so I don’t care,” she in an interview on Peace FM on May 4, 2024.

    Sir John, a former General Secretary of the NPP, remained a loyal supporter of Bawumia until his passing from COVID-19 complications in 2020 at the age of 63.

    Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has contended that the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar has improved compared to its performance during the previous John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

    In an interview with AfricaWatch, Dr. Bawumia emphasizes the relative stability of the cedi against the US dollar during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

    Despite economic challenges, Dr. Bawumia asserts sustained cedi depreciation has been manageable.

    Citing data, Dr. Bawumia compares cedi depreciation between NPP and NDC administrations, noting lower depreciation rates under NPP.

    Defending his previous statement on weak NDC fundamentals, Dr. Bawumia links recent economic challenges to global crises and domestic factors.

    Ghana faces economic turmoil, defaulting on external debt payments totaling $30 billion in 2022.

    With limited access to international capital markets, Ghana resorts to domestic treasury bills for borrowing.

    Under the 17th IMF bailout program, Ghana reaches a staff-level agreement for a third installment of $360 million.

    “Why not? We use averages to measure progress in statistics and economics all the time. It is a valid comparison of the management of the exchange rate under our government versus under the NDC government. The point is that notwithstanding the major global and domestic challenges we have been through, it is remarkable that whereas the exchange-rate depreciation between 2009-2016 averaged 13.9%, between 2017-2023 it averaged 13.1%. That is a fact,” Dr Bawumia stated.

    He continued, “The data shows that from 2009-2016, the cedi depreciated cumulatively by 71.1%, and between 2017 and 2023, the cumulative depreciation was 64.6%. So, whether you look at the average or the cumulative, the depreciation of the cedi has been lower under our government, notwithstanding the severe global shocks we have endured. That is the basic truth.”

    “Absolutely! It is still true, and I will continue to stand by that statement. We saw that between 2017 and 2021 when the fundamentals in terms of the fiscal deficit, inflation, GDP growth, external balances, and international reserves were fairly strong, the exchange rate was relatively stable.

    “But following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the banking-sector crisis, the excess-capacity energy payments, and the lack of access to international capital markets, the fundamentals of the economy were weakened, and the fiscal deficit and debt levels increased,” he explained.

    Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has claimed that the depreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar has exhibited improvement compared to its performance during the previous John Mahama administration.

    He contended that under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership over the past seven years, the value of the local currency has been relatively more stable than before.

    During an interview with AfricaWatch, he asserted that despite the economic challenges faced by the country, the depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar has been sustainable.

    “Why not? We use averages to measure progress in statistics and economics all the time. It is a valid comparison of the management of the exchange rate under our government versus under the NDC government. The point is that notwithstanding the major global and domestic challenges we have been through, it is remarkable that whereas the exchange-rate depreciation between 2009-2016 averaged 13.9%, between 2017-2023 it averaged 13.1%. That is a fact,” Dr Bawumia stated.

    He continued, “The data shows that from 2009-2016, the cedi depreciated cumulatively by 71.1%, and between 2017 and 2023, the cumulative depreciation was 64.6%. So, whether you look at the average or the cumulative, the depreciation of the cedi has been lower under our government, notwithstanding the severe global shocks we have endured. That is the basic truth.”

    Dr. Bawumia, also the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, stood by his widely circulated statement from 2016, asserting that the NDC administration had weak fundamentals. Consequently, the cedi was in a dire state, exposing them [NDC].

    “Absolutely! It is still true, and I will continue to stand by that statement. We saw that between 2017 and 2021 when the fundamentals in terms of the fiscal deficit, inflation, GDP growth, external balances, and international reserves were fairly strong, the exchange rate was relatively stable.

    “But following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the banking-sector crisis, the excess-capacity energy payments, and the lack of access to international capital markets, the fundamentals of the economy were weakened, and the fiscal deficit and debt levels increased,” he explained.

    In 2022, Ghana faced one of its severest economic downturns, marked by its failure to meet payments on a significant portion of its external debt totaling $30 billion.

    As a result, the country was excluded from international capital markets and turned to domestic treasury bill markets for borrowing.

    Under its 17th IMF bailout program, Ghana, on April 13, 2024, reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF Mission team for a second review, enabling the release of a third installment of bailout funds amounting to $360 million.

    Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility program with the IMF is set to span a three-year period.

    “What is a lie? If I say for example that if I become President I will build a wall in front of Asaase Radio and I haven’t been able to do it, is it a lie? Is that what will make you call me a liar?

    “If that is a lie, then let me tell you, the last time I picked John Mahama’s 2012 manifesto and I looked at it, he had over 1,300 promises that he hasn’t been able to fulfill. Then for us to be able to establish between John Mahama and Bawumia who is a liar we have to pick their manifestos and analyze it,” he said.

    Mr Aboagye explained that the internet’s algorithms tend to pick up repeated content, regardless of its accuracy, which has unfairly branded Vice President Bawumia as deceitful.

    He asserted that the failure to fulfill every promise outlined in a manifesto does not automatically equate to dishonesty. 

    Mr Aboagye also drew attention to the fact that if unmet promises were the sole measure of dishonesty, then John Dramani Mahama would surpass Bawumia in that regard based on unfulfilled pledges.

    “First of all, apart from the NDC and the opposition political party which is their job, you’ll barely hear any Ghanaian…I think Joy or Multimedia or so did some series on this thing and they realized it was a deliberate orchestration.

    “This is the internet, it’s an algorithm, every day as I write Miracles is a thief, it will pop up. Somebody needs to write about 20 articles. There is no fact, there is no evidence, and there is nothing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has lied about.

    “It has dramatically boosted student enrollment in senior high schools across the country. What is more important, the highest enrollments are coming from the poorest regions of Ghana, like the five northern regions.

    “Furthermore, Ghana has now attained gender parity in senior high-school education as more girls than boys have accessed the programme. Also, the increase in enrollment has not resulted in a reduction in quality.

    “In fact, the performance of the students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination last year shows that the free SHS beneficiaries attained the best results since 2014. The policy has therefore been a resounding success. That does not mean it is without problems. There is more to be done to improve it.”

    A downpour on Thursday nearly ruined the commissioning of the newly reconstructed Appiatse community two years after the tragic incident that devastated the community in the Prestea-Huni Valley District of the Western Region.

    “In addition to his donation, President Akufo-Addo directed that US$5,000,000.00 out of the US$6,000,000.00 administrative fine imposed on the company at the centre of the explosion be paid to the Appiatse Support Fund to support victims of the incident and the rebuilding of this community. Such a selfless and compassionate gesture.”

    Expanding on the efforts of key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources led by Minister Samuel A. Jinapor, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia highlighted that following the incident, the government swiftly implemented measures to alleviate the burden on residents.

    This included initiating a resettlement process for the affected residents.

    Referring to the Lands Minister as a ‘Bulldozer,’ Dr Bawumia praised his dedication and commitment to the successful completion of the Appiatse project.

    Dr. Asante Otchere’s remarks followed statements made by the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim, expressing the party’s commitment to reconcile with Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Ejisu Member of Parliament and runner-up in Tuesday’s Ejisu by-election.

    Mr Ntim emphasized Mr Aduomi’s significance to the NPP and his determination to reintegrate him into the party.

    Mr Aduomi, who served three terms as an NPP MP for Ejisu, chose to run as an independent candidate in the by-election due to concerns about the party’s handling of the delegates’ album for constituency executive elections, which he believed compromised fairness and integrity.

    Several NPP members, including President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, accused Aduomi of betrayal and speculated that he had defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

    Dr. Asante Otchere, in an interview with Bonohene Baffuor Awuah on the Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM, criticized both President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia for lacking the spirit of reconciliation, essential in politics.

    He highlighted the difficulty Aduomi may face in reconciling with the NPP, particularly due to the accusatory statements made by the President and Vice President.

    “If you listen to the kind of things the President and the Vice President said about Aduomi, it will be difficult for the former MP to reconcile with the NPP. The Vice President accused him of being an NDC member. That was very bad, just because he had some disagreements with the NPP and decided to contest against the party.

    “Post-election, if you listen to what the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, has said, it is wonderful, quite reconciliatory. But if you listen to the President and Vice President, these are two individuals who are very divisive. The President is also very vindictive; he does not forgive anyone who does anything against him. That is how he is. So, the decision is for Kwabena Owusu Aduomi to make. If he feels that the environment will allow him to project himself in terms of his political career, why not? If not, and since politics is about timing, if you get your timing right, you’ll get your result right.”

    Dr. Asante Otchere described them as divisive and noted the President’s reputation for being vindictive, suggesting that he does not easily forgive those who oppose him.

    He further elaborated that certain mining concessions in Ghana would be reserved for small-scale miners under his administration.

    “We will allocate the mining concessions to the small-scale miners. My primary focus is to make many small-scale miners millionaires and multi-millionaires. I want to support our small-scale miners,” he said.

    Dr. Bawumia also promised to shift the government’s approach towards small-scale miners by supporting them with the necessary tools to mine legally, instead of pursuing them and seizing their equipment.

    “We will formalise the small-scale mining regime and give them a license. Everybody will register with the Small Scale Miners Association with their Ghana card and we will deepen the representation of the Minerals Commission and the EPA, and make sure that the districts that they don’t have representatives, we will give them some,” he added.

    Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish a mining committee in each district, in collaboration with local chiefs, to issue temporary licenses for mining activities.

    The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has asserted that the reconstruction of Appiatse demonstrates the government’s commitment to fulfilling its pledges.

    On Thursday, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated over 120 completed housing units for occupancy at Appiatse, a community located between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.

    In January 2022, a catastrophic incident occurred when a vehicle carrying about 10 tonnes of mining explosives to the Chirano Mines collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the detonation of the explosives and the destruction of the community.

    Promptly responding to this tragic event, the government initiated the reconstruction process, leading to the completion of 124 housing units and auxiliary facilities for the survivors.

    The newly constructed structures range from one-bedroom to seven-bedroom units and are equipped with enhanced amenities, including a market, six-unit classroom and kindergarten blocks, internal roads, water and electricity supply, a drainage system, and a water storage system.

    During the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, May 2, Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the reconstruction serves as evidence that the government honors its commitments.

    “If anybody thought that governments do not keep their promises, the Vice President made a promise to the people of Appiatse and this is a promise made, a promise kept.”

    “And if anybody thought that governments cannot deliver, President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s government has demonstrated that there is a government here in Ghana which is delivering, which will deliver and which will forever deliver for the people of Ghana, the people of Prestrea Huni Valley and the people of Appiatse,” he stated.

    Currently, voting is ongoing across all 204 polling centers in Ejisu to elect a successor for the former MP and Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, who passed away on March 7, 2024.

    Six candidates, including three independent candidates, are competing in the by-election, with an expected participation of 106,812 voters.

    Notably, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, a former three-time NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, is running as an Independent Candidate in the by-election.

    Despite facing allegations of betrayal, Aduomi remains optimistic about his chances of winning the election and representing Ejisu once again.
