Who are you not to hand over power? – Governance expert quizzes Akufo-Addo

Governance expert Prof. Baffour Agyemang-Duah has dismissed President Akufo-Addo’s statement that he would not hand over power to John Mahama as a mere joke.

Prof. Agyemang-Duah emphasized that President Akufo-Addo would be obligated to transfer power if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) loses the 2024 elections.

This commentary follows President Akufo-Addo’s renewed appeal to Ghanaians to vote for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 General Election.

President Akufo-Addo asserted that John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, should not succeed him, arguing that Mahama would undermine his legacy.

“Of course, I will not protect your ‘legacy’ of corruption, misgovernance, arrogance, ineptitude, bankrupt economy, increased unemployment, and pushing more of our people into the poverty bracket,” the NDC flagbearer stated in a tweet.

“I think the President was joking, I don’t think he was serious about saying I won’t hand over power. Who is he, not to hand over power? So I think it was just a mere joke.

“Even though people think perhaps it was a mere joke, I don’t think the President will ever dream of not handing over power if his party loses. It cannot happen in this country,” Prof. Agyemang-Duah reiterated.

Wa-Kumasi road will see major development before 2024 election – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured that the Wa-Kumasi highway will see significant improvements before the December 2024 general election.

He mentioned that he has been in discussions with the Minister of Roads and Highways to enhance the road by tarring and asphalting it.

“Before the end of this year, fingers crossed, the Sunyani (Kumasi) all the way to Wa, the road, we are going to see some major improvement in this major road. … and I want to see a dramatic improvement. Not only just coal tar, I want to see asphalt all the way,” Dr Bawumia stated.

The Vice President made this promise in Wa during a meeting with the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs as part of his campaign tour of the region.

This commitment came in response to a request from Naa Dikomwine Domalae, the President of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs and the Paramount Chief of the Daffiama Traditional Area, who urged Dr. Bawumia to consider rehabilitating the Wa-Bamboi-Kumasi highway, currently in a deplorable state.

Naa Domalae highlighted that rehabilitating this road would greatly facilitate the movement of people and goods, thereby boosting commerce in the region.

Emphasizing his determination to see the project completed, Vice President Bawumia assured the esteemed chiefs and queen mothers that the road would be constructed before, not after, the 2024 general election.

“I do not want to say, vote for me and I will make it happen. I want it to be done so that you will see that it is done before we even get to the election. So, we are going to do it,” the NPP flagbearer stressed.

Additionally, the Chief appealed to Dr. Bawumia to expedite the construction of other critical roads in the region, such as the Sabuli-Hain-Tumu and Kajekperi-Tumu roads. The Vice President assured that these requests would be considered.

He also highlighted the importance of the Tumu-Chuchulga road as another critical stretch that required immediate attention.

“So, there are quite a few roads, even though we have done some roads, there are some critical roads that we need to get done in the region,” Dr Bawumia indicated.

During a visit to the Upper West Region, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia highlighted the achievements of the current NPP-led government, citing the completion of 531 projects in the region. He expressed his commitment to further developing the region if elected President in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections. One of his proposed interventions includes the development of the Kambaa Irrigation project in the Nandom Municipality.

Dr. Bawumia appealed to the Chiefs for their support and prayers in his quest to implement his development agenda for the region. Paramount Chief Naa Alhaji Seidu Tungbani Salimbile II urged both Dr. Bawumia and former President John Mahama to refrain from engaging in politics of insults and instead focus on issues-based campaigns to maintain peace and unity in the country.

In a meeting with the Christian clergy, Dan Botwe, Senior Campaign Aide to Dr. Bawumia, emphasized the need for the clergy’s guidance to help the electorate make an informed choice in the upcoming election. He stated that Dr. Bawumia had committed himself to being an instrument for the transformation and development of the country and should be supported as the best option to lead Ghana.

Apostle George Apasera, General Overseer of the Christ Frontiers Mission in Wa, appealed to Dr. Bawumia to separate the National Cathedral project from politics and allow the Christian community to lead its construction, as it would benefit both them and the country.

During his tour, Dr. Bawumia also interacted with traders at the Wa central market and engaged with the youth in Wa.

Bawumia is the ideal leader for Ghana – Ahiagbah

Former President, John Dramani Mahama failed the country during his tenure and should not be re-elected, this is according to the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah.

Mr. Ahiagbah highlighted that Ghanaians have moved on from the “painful experiences” of Mahama’s presidency, which included the “historic dumsor” (power outages) that crippled businesses, led to job losses, caused avoidable deaths, and resulted in the cancellation of teacher and nursing trainee allowances, among other issues.

In a post on his X platform, Ahiagbah stated that Mahama offers no redemption.

He contrasted this with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he described as embodying the spirit of overcoming adversity, having risen from humble beginnings in Sakasaka, Tamale, to the presidency.

“Bawumia is the epitome of pulling oneself up by the bootstrap because he has worked hard from a humble beginning at Sakasaka, in Tamale, to the presidency of the Republic of Ghana.

“This is the story of the majority of Ghanaians, working hard against all odds to make it. With Bawumia’s experience from the bottom up, his presidency will be more sensitive and advance the interests of the masses.

“As for the alternative, H.E. John Mahama, there is no redemption for him. He failed the masses when he had the opportunity to rule Ghana, and we have moved on from the painful experiences of his presidency such as the historic dumsor that vaquished businesses, employments opportunities, avoidable deaths and the cancelation of teacher & nursing trainee allowances, among others.

“Bawumia is best to lead. A vote for Bawumia is a breakthrough for the masses who are mostly youth and women,” he wrote.

Kayeyei Empowerment Programme to be launched by Bawumia today

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia is set to launch the “Kayeyei Empowerment Programme” at the Madina Social Centre today (21 May), aimed at providing skills training for head porters, commonly known as Kayayei.

The initiative aims to enhance the skills of head porters, create transitional job opportunities, and improve their socio-economic well-being.

Ghana has approximately 100,000 female head porters, with over 70% based in Accra due to the high demand for their services.

In January, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the communication director of the Bawumia campaign team, announced that Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia would fulfill his promise to provide accommodation for head porters.

In a post shared on [Platform X], Miracles Aboagye disclosed that two hostel facilities have been completed and are ready for commissioning.

These accommodations, situated in Madina and Ashaiman, suburbs of Accra, will not only serve as hostels for Kayayei but also function as training centers for them.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in society and offers a promising future for Kayayei in terms of both housing and skill development.

  • We are still awaiting allowances promised by Bawumia – Nursing trainees

We are still awaiting allowances promised by Bawumia – Nursing trainees

Nursing trainees were to receive their overdue allowances last week following a promise by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

During a campaign tour, he was approached by a trainee about the unpaid allowances and assured them that he would address the issue with the finance minister to ensure payments were made.

Later, in a public statement, the Vice President disclosed that funds had been released for the payments as of the previous Thursday.

However, the umbrella body for nursing and midwifery trainees reported that the payments have not yet appeared in their accounts. In a statement issued on Monday, May 20, the Coalition of Concerned Nurses and Midwives Trainees said, “Despite the Vice President’s announcement over nineteen days ago, no payments have been made nor information provided on the disbursement process. The government’s failure to address these arrears comprehensively continues to burden our future healthcare professionals.”

The coalition also highlighted that the 177 million Ghana cedis announced by Dr. Bawumia is insufficient to cover the months owed.

“This calculation does not include the 30% of trainees who have never received any allowances, amounting to an additional GHC209,160,000. Therefore, the minimum total arrears required is GHC209.16 Million,” the statement added.

“The government’s failure to address these arrears comprehensively continues to burden our future healthcare professionals.”

Health Minister Bernard Okoe Boye has assured that the government will eventually settle the arrears, unlike the previous administration that completely abolished the payments.

The coalition also pointed out that 177 million Ghana cedi announced by Dr. Bawumia is “woefully inadequate” to cater for the number of months owed them.”

“The recently released GHC117 million covers only 11.5% of the total arrears, which is woefully inadequate. Furthermore, 30% of the trainees, approximately 17,430 students, have never received any allowances. This group’s arrears alone amount to GHC209.16 million which is even more than the paltry Ghc177M.

You’ve 4 years and I have 8, allow me to be president – Bawumia to Mahama

The flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to his primary rival, John Dramani Mahama, to demonstrate patience and allow him the opportunity to also serve as President.

During a visit to the palace of Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV on Sunday, May 19, Dr. Bawumia stressed that while Mr. Mahama has already held the position of President, he has not yet had the chance to do so.

Thus, he urged Mr. Mahama to exercise restraint and permit him to take his turn.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that as per the constitution, Mr. Mahama is eligible for only one term, whereas he has the potential to serve for two terms if elected.

Despite being engaged in political campaigns, Dr. Bawumia underscored his focus on addressing issues crucial to the Ghanaian populace rather than resorting to insults or personal attacks against his adversaries.

He reiterated his dedication to informing the electorate about his proposed plans and programs for the country if elected President, rather than indulging in divisive rhetoric aimed at undermining his opponents.

“[My main opponent and I] are both your children. We are both from the north and he has been president before but I haven’t been president before, so I have told him (John Mahama) that he is my senior brother, and he should have patience for me so I can also become president of this country.”

“I will be able to be president for 8 years, and he can only be president for four years, so if the presidency is coming home, then we should have it for 8-years rather than four years,” he said.

Bawumia is drawing crowd with his campaign strategy – MP

The Member of Parliament representing Dormaa East, Paul Apraku Twum Barimah, has remarked that the strategic campaign approach of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has left members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in awe.

Dr. Bawumia’s campaign strategy, labeled “Bawumia face-to-face, street-to-street, door-to-door, and joint-to-joint,” is gaining momentum across various regions of Ghana.

This strategy involves walking through streets, districts, and communities, engaging citizens in one-on-one discussions, and introducing his policies and vision for the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Having already visited the Eastern, Western, Ashanti, Bono East, Bono, Northern, and parts of the Greater Accra regions, Dr. Bawumia’s presence is drawing large crowds eager to hear about his proposed policies and programs for implementation from 2025.

According to Honorable Twum Barimah, Dr. Bawumia’s campaign strategy is proving highly effective for the NPP, as evidenced by the increasing numbers of supporters joining the campaign trail.

“Dr. Bawumia is doing something great and extraordinary in his campaign tour. Walking on the streets and meeting food vendors, shop operators, commuters, as well as taxi and trotro drivers, is very strategic and is giving the NPP the numbers,” Paul Twum Barimah stated.

“This is also because the campaign message the Vice President is rolling out is stunning and attracts and pulls the people along. The increasing numbers on the campaign tour are good for the party, and we are replicating it in all the regions to sell the good message of the party,” Honorable Twum Barimah revealed.

“I can tell you that the NDC members are dazed by the high rate and level of crowds the Vice President is pulling across the regions with his iconic campaign bus, with the inscription ‘IT IS POSSIBLE,’” he explained.

“I can assure you that with this rate of campaign from the NPP and Dr. Bawumia, Mahama and his NDC will fall out and lose the coming elections,” Honorable Twum Barimah added.

On Monday, April 29, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia initiated his presidential campaign for the December 2024 elections with a historic event in the Eastern Region. Surrounded by enthusiastic supporters, Bawumia emphasized the imperative of youth empowerment nationwide.

He underscored the urgency of innovative solutions to address the challenges confronting Ghana’s youth and pledged to lead the charge. Bawumia articulated a comprehensive vision aimed at tackling unemployment, improving quality of life, and ensuring equitable opportunities for all.

Drawing on his problem-solving expertise, Bawumia highlighted the transformative potential of digitization and emphasized the pivotal role of the private sector in job creation. He envisioned Ghana following the footsteps of global tech giants, laying the foundation for sustainable job growth independent of government finances.

Central to his agenda are initiatives such as the establishment of a national identification system and the implementation of mobile money interoperability, both of which Bawumia has actively advocated for. These initiatives serve as foundational steps towards greater achievements in propelling Ghana into the league of developed nations.

Bawumia’s message resonated with hope and determination, reaffirming his steadfast commitment to empowering Ghana’s youth. Through initiatives aimed at enhancing access to credit and promoting financial inclusion, barriers to entrepreneurship could be overcome, unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s youth.

Applause reverberated across the Eastern Region as Bawumia’s message of hope spread far and wide. With digitization as the cornerstone of his presidency, Ghana’s future appeared promising for its youth. As Bawumia continues his nationwide tour, his unwavering message remains clear: the time for transformation is now. Together, every young Ghanaian can anticipate a future filled with opportunity and prosperity.

  • You should visit pre-2017 cedi restoration notes again – Dr Asiedu Sarpong tells Bawumia

You should visit pre-2017 cedi restoration notes again – Dr Asiedu Sarpong tells Bawumia

A Fellow at CDD-GHANA, Dr. Kwame Asiedu Sarpong, has urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), to reassess his strategies aimed at halting the cedi’s downward spiral.

During an interview on Kumasi-based Abusua 96.5FM’s Bresosem program with Millicent Safo-Adu over the weekend, Dr. Asiedu Sarpong noted that Dr. Bawumia, prior to assuming the vice presidency in 2017, had instilled confidence in Ghanaians regarding his capability to strengthen the Ghanaian cedi.

He highlighted that during his time in opposition, Dr. Bawumia had outlined measures for cedi stabilization. However, after nearly eight years in power, the cedi has depreciated from Ghc3.80 to Ghc15.

Dr. Asiedu Sarpong recommended that Dr. Bawumia revisit his academic notes, recall the strategies he proposed for John Mahama to implement in strengthening the local currency, and apply them to rescue the cedi from its current decline.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s silence on the cedi’s depreciation, he emphasized, “The government must address the cedi issue as it affects us all.”

Dr. Asiedu Sarpong depicted how the depreciation of the cedi affects an average Ghanaian worker earning Ghc3000, clarifying that the weakened cedi leads to reduced purchasing power as imported goods become pricier.

Consequently, market vendors increase prices, directly impacting consumers.

Furthermore, Dr. Sarpong expressed concern over the significant depreciation of the cedi against major currencies, citing recent fluctuations in the pound’s exchange rate.

“From last week, on the 8th of May, I sent money to Ghana. One pound was Ghc17.13ps. The next day, the pound-to-cedi rate was Ghc17.25ps. Two days later, it moved to Ghc17.35ps. Yesterday, I sent money and it was Ghc18.17ps”, he stressed.

He highlighted the alarming trend of the cedi’s devaluation over a short period, underscoring the urgency of addressing this economic challenge.

“So, I decided to check the trend and understand what’s happening. I found out that on the 18th of April, a pound to a cedi was Ghc16.80ps. As of today, the 18th of May, it is trading at Ghc18.17, with almost 2 cedis added in 30 days”, he noted.

The call for a reevaluation of cedi restoration strategies comes amidst growing concerns over the currency’s decline and its implications on the economy and everyday life in Ghana.

I will make the cost of electricity cheaper if you vote for me – Bawumia

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to reduce electricity costs significantly by transitioning Ghana to solar energy if elected.

He believes that Ghana possesses the capability to harness solar energy for electricity generation.

During discussions with religious leaders in the Upper East region, he outlined his plan to introduce approximately 2000 megawatts of solar power within his initial four years in office.

He asserted that this quantity constitutes roughly half of the nation’s current electricity consumption and could potentially halve power expenses.

Furthermore, the Vice President expressed his ambition for Ghana to venture into solar panel manufacturing, aiming to become a supplier to other African nations.

“The next major objective for me is to bring down the cost of power, electricity. And how am I going to do it? I want to do it by shifting Ghana away from fuel-generated power to solar-generated power. I want us to move from fuel to solar.

“Solar is given to us by God for free. If we have to buy fuel we need foreign exchange and then we have to import. But solar we can harness it and generate power.”

“So I want us to bring 2000 megawatts in the first four years. That is about half our consumption in the first four years and we can reduce the cost of power by at least 50% if we move in this direction…I want Ghana to start manufacturing solar panels as well and then let us start supplying the rest of Africa with it,” he stated.

A dollar crossing GHC20, It Is Possible – Sammy Gyamfi jabs Bawumia

The Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has taken a jab at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), using his own campaign slogan “IT IS POSSIBLE.”

In a Facebook post on Friday, May 17, Gyamfi highlighted several perceived failures of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, framing them within the context of Bawumia’s “IT IS POSSIBLE” slogan.

Gyamfi stated, “Folks, one profound campaign message of the NPP and Alhaji Bawumia that I agree with, is their campaign slogan, ‘IT IS POSSIBLE’. This is because:

    1. IT IS POSSIBLE for one dollar to cross GH¢20 under the watch of Bawumia, having increased from GH¢4 in 2016 to over GH¢15 already.
    2. IT IS POSSIBLE for the rate of unemployment to cross 20% under the watch of Bawumia, having increased from 8.4% in 2016 to 14.7% already.
    3. IT IS POSSIBLE for the price of a gallon of petrol to cross GH¢100 under the watch of Bawumia, having increased from GH¢14 in 2016 to over GH¢68 already.
    4. IT IS POSSIBLE for the public debt to cross GH¢1 trillion under the watch of Bawumia, having increased from GH¢120 billion in 2016 to over GH¢630 billion already.
    5. IT IS POSSIBLE for Ghana to lose over $10 billion to corruption under the watch of Bawumia, having lost $2 billion dollars through the stinking PDS scandal he personally orchestrated.
    6. IT IS POSSIBLE for deceptive Bawumia to hoodwink some unsuspecting Ghanaians with his plagiarized promises to scrap the E-Levy, Bet levy, and the emissions levy, having failed to move the nation from taxation to production.
    7. And oh, IT IS POSSIBLE for Bawumia to deceive drivers with his promise to provide them with electric cars, having failed to deliver the concrete roads he promised them in 2017.”

Mr Gyamfi concluded his post by stating, “Indeed, IT IS VERY POSSIBLE!!! #Bawuliar is spot on on this one.”

Ahead of the 2024 elections, presidential aspirants in Ghana are ramping up their campaigns in a bid to garner more support from voters.

In addition to traditional campaign tactics such as engaging in conversations and rallying supporters with slogans, some aspirants have taken to the dance floor to showcase their dancing skills.

Notably, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, former President John Mahama representing the NDC, and Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, have all been seen displaying their dancing prowess during campaign events.

While this approach to campaigning has drawn mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with some expressing disapproval, others have found it acceptable and even entertaining.

The sight of presidential aspirants busting moves on the dance floor adds a unique and lively element to the election season, showcasing a different side to the candidates as they vie for the highest office in the country.

We will win 2024 elections with logical approach – NPP

Communication Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will approach the 2024 general elections with a logical strategy rather than emotions.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday, Mr. Aboagye emphasized that the current administration has outperformed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and deserves the mandate to continue.

“The person who promised you three years out of his four years has given you power for seven years and what you call ‘dumsor’ for ten weeks. Are you saying that you would prefer three years of leadership over seven years of power? Even your child would be worried about you if you made that decision.”

“I am telling you that we are going into this election with logic, not emotions, and not ends. The macroeconomic indicators I mentioned earlier are struggling, and rightly so,” he said.

“Just like the UK is struggling, just like the US is struggling, and just like Ivory Coast and Nigeria, which have the worst currency in the world today. We are trying to get out of it. But it doesn’t mean that we should hand over the country to a government that we know cannot deliver,” he added.

  • A dollar would have hit GHS25 if NDC were in power – NPP

A dollar would have hit GHS25 if NDC were in power – NPP

The Communication Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has claimed that Ghanaians would be purchasing a dollar at GH₵25 if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were in power.

This assertion follows the consistent rise of the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, which is currently above GH₵14 per US dollar. Several financial analysts have projected that the cedi will reach between GH₵16 and GH₵18 to the dollar.

Banking Consultant Dr. Richmond Atuahene, speaking on GHOne TV, mentioned that while Bloomberg and others predict the cedi will hit GH₵16 by the end of the year, he believes it will go even higher, suggesting Ghanaians should prepare to trade at GH₵18 to the dollar.

However, in an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Aboagye defended the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s handling of the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, considering the various challenges they have faced.

“I am very sure that if in August 2014 the dollar was going that fast, if the same managers were here, we would be buying the dollar at GH₵25. Can you tell me what happened in 2014 for the cedi to move from 1.2 to 3.9 cedis to the dollar?

“When you are running an organization, you run it with conditions, and the conditions will determine where you are moving your organization. In Ghana today, given the challenges we face in the global economy, if these managers were in charge between 2020 and now, we would be buying dollars at GH₵25 or GH₵30. Because in 2014, we had no reason to have the dollar where it was,” Mr. Aboagye stated.

He continued: “I can tell you what COVID-19 has done to us; I can tell you what the Ukraine-Russia war has done to us. I can tell you what the challenges in Asia have done to us. Can you tell me what was happening in 2014? Mention just one thing.”

You will receive your allowances on time if I become president – Bawumia to trainee nurses

Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has committed to ensuring the timely and consistent disbursement of nursing trainee allowances, aiming to eliminate any future arrears.

Addressing nursing trainees in the Savannah Region, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his dedication to ensuring that these vital funds are allocated promptly.

“For us, we restored the allawa. For other people, they cancelled the allawa. And we are going to keep working hard. And I am going to keep my eyes on your allawa so that we can make sure that it is regular and comes and comes and comes.

“You will be assured of that. I am going to keep my eye on it. We are going to change this country,” Dr. Bawumia assured the gathering.

Furthermore, during a meeting with nurses and midwives in Accra on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the Vice President announced the disbursement of 177 million Ghana cedis on Thursday, May 16, 2024, to settle outstanding arrears owed to nursing trainees.

“This Thursday, the Controller is transferring 177 million Ghana cedis to the Ministry of Health to pay the nursing training allowances.

“So I have also alerted Dr. Okoe-Boye to be on standby when the money hits the Ministry of Health account. They should move it quickly to the accounts of the nursing trainees so that they will have their allawa. It will drop,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

Bawumia is going around joking, dancing and not campaigning – Dep. NDC National Youth Organiser

Deputy National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has strongly criticized the campaign efforts of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), labeling them as a “comedy show.”

Mr Ayariga expressed his disdain for what he perceives as Bawumia’s lack of seriousness towards the country and its electorate, suggesting that the NPP candidate does not deserve further attention in the political arena.

“Bawumia’ campaign is not a campaign. it is a comedy show because the vice president is roaming about joking and once he is done joking, he starts dancing. When he made the promise to the churches, he came back to say he was joking.”

“A whole Vice President can say he is joking on a campaign platform in a comedy show. It is not a campaign. he is not serious,” he said.

The criticism follows recent remarks made by Dr. Bawumia regarding incentivizing churches rather than imposing taxes on them. Dr. Bawumia clarified that his statement was made in jest and had been misconstrued.

During a meeting with clergy members in the North East Region as part of his nationwide tour, the Vice President explained that his comments may have been misunderstood.

Despite Dr. Bawumia’s attempts to clarify his remarks, Ayariga remained steadfast in his criticism, asserting that the NPP candidate is unfit for the presidency.

According to Mr Ayariga, Dr. Bawumia’s promises are perceived as mere jokes, further solidifying his belief that Bawumia should not be considered a viable candidate for the highest office in the country.

Addressing trainee nurses in the Savannah Region, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his dedication to promptly allocating these allowances.

He assured the audience that measures would be implemented to prevent any delays in the future, responding to concerns raised by trainees about the irregularity of their allowances.

By making these promises, Dr. Bawumia aims to ease the financial burden on trainees and support their education and training efforts.

“For us, we restored the allowance. For other people, they cancelled it. And we are going to keep working hard. And I am going to keep my eyes on your ‘alawa’ so that we can make sure that it is regular and comes. You will be assured of that. I am going to keep my eye on it. We are going to change this country,” he said.

Akufo-Addo’s choice of words are not encouraging – Ex-Sgt. Akata Pore

A former member of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), Sergeant Daniel Alolga Akata Pore, has advised President Akufo-Addo to exercise caution with his public statements.

He criticized the president’s remarks about not handing over power to a previously defeated opponent, John Mahama, stating that such comments are unbecoming of his position and could be detrimental to the nation’s welfare.

Sergeant Akata Pore indicated that President Akufo-Addo’s public comments concerning the 2024 elections could threaten the country’s current democratic state.

He advised the president to abandon such a demeanor.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Sergeant Akata Pore implored the president to refrain from making light of serious matters through his speeches if he wishes for democracy to endure.

“Some of the language used by politicians is also unhelpful. The president has stated he will not hand over power—is this merely political rhetoric? As a president, one should not make jokes. Is it also jest when he declares he will ensure Bawumia‘s victory by any means? Being in a position of power, such statements are concerning, especially if they lead to an actual refusal to hand over power.

“That’s not the kind of language the president should be using. It doesn’t help. And one of his ministers also said a similar thing. So, basically what I’m saying is, if you want this democracy to last, you want the middle class to continue enjoying the honeypot that they’ve gotten from the 1992 constitution, then bring some decency into your behavior,” he said.

He encouraged them to pioneer new financial products and services to drive economic growth and development across the continent.

Dr. Bawumia also emphasized the need for fintech startups to showcase their market potential, ensure strict regulatory compliance, and maintain transparency to attract substantial investment into Africa.

“Today, we delve into the dynamic world of FinTech in Africa, a landscape marked by rapid growth, innovation, and immense potential. The FinTech industry in Africa has experienced a significant surge over the past decade, driven by technological advancements, rising mobile phone penetration, and a youthful population eager to harness the transformative power of digital financial services,” Dr Bawumia said.

These efforts have resulted in increased economic stability and predictable growth rates in several countries. Additionally, national economies have become more open, fostering greater trade openness across the continent.

The Vice President emphasized the growing importance of the fintech sector as a pivotal driver accelerating the continent’s growth trajectory.

He noted that while African consumers and businesses were initially hesitant to embrace e-commerce, which represented only 1% of Africa’s $1 trillion economy in 2009, the landscape has since transformed significantly.

Ghana doesn’t need a joker but a focused, trustworthy president – Apaak jabs Bawumia

Dr. Clement Apaak, representing Builsa South in Parliament, has responded to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent comments, where Bawumia stated that his remarks about compensating churches were meant in jest.

Apaak emphasized that the present circumstances demand a serious leader, not one who jests, given the nation’s pressing issues.

Vice President Bawumia clarified that his previous statement about compensating churches rather than taxing them was misconstrued. He explained that he intended to acknowledge the significant contributions of religious institutions in areas such as education and healthcare, advocating for further support for their efforts.

However, Apaak, known for his critical stance towards Bawumia, dismissed the notion of considering a leader he labeled as a “comical liar” for the presidency.

He stressed the need for a competent and sincere leader to address the country’s challenges, advocating for the visionary leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Apaak asserted that Mahama is the best-suited candidate to navigate the nation through its difficulties, emphasizing Mahama’s qualities of sincerity, honesty, and vision.

“Now is not the time to consider a comical liar. Certainly not a joker at this critical juncture.

“With the serious challenges we face as a nation, we need a serious, focused, visionary, sincere, and honest leader. This leader is John Dramani Mahama, the man equipped to tackle our challenges, not a joker.”

Protesting opposite Jubilee House is not permissible – Police tells dumsor vigil organizers

The Ghana Police Service’s Greater Accra Regional Command has informed organizers of an upcoming protest that their chosen location is deemed unsuitable due to security concerns.

The organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil met with the police on May 15, 2024, following their notification of a protest scheduled for May 25, 2024, against frequent power outages, known as dumsor.

In a confidential notice dated May 15, 2024, the police expressed concerns about the chosen protest site, Revolution Square, citing its proximity to the Jubilee House, the seat of Government, as a security zone.

They cautioned that conducting the protest there could endanger public defense, order, safety, and infringe upon the rights and freedoms of others.

“That the Jubilee House which is directly opposite the Revolution Square is the seat of Government and therefore a security zone, thus the protest and picketing at the Revolution Square may endanger public defence, public order, public safety and violate the rights and freedoms of other persons.”

Additionally, the police highlighted the security implications of the proposed midnight closing time.

Instead, the police suggested relocating the protest to Independence Square and assured organizers of their full support in facilitating the relocation.

Focus on dancing with the cedi to fix the economy – Ato Forson tells Bawumia

The Minority in Parliament has expressed concern over the ongoing challenges facing the Ghana Cedi, warning that the situation is likely to deteriorate further.

They highlighted that the local currency has now reached GH₵15 against the dollar, leading traders to pass on the increased costs to consumers.

This has resulted in a noticeable surge in the prices of goods and services across various commercial districts such as Okaishie, Abossey Okai, and Kejetia.

Addressing journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson criticized the Economic Management Team Chairman, Dr. Bawumia, for what he perceives as a failure to address the currency’s depreciation effectively.

Dr. Ato Forson emphasized the adverse impact of the Cedi’s decline on businesses, stressing the need for urgent action to stabilize the situation.

The former Deputy Finance Minister urged all well-meaning Ghanaians to hold Dr. Bawumia accountable for his performance as the head of the Economic Management Team.

He argued that Dr. Bawumia’s administration has fallen short in managing the economic challenges, particularly regarding the stability of the Cedi.

“In spite of the huge inflows of foreign exchange from the IMF and the World Bank, into the Ghanaian economy, and I’m talking of billions of Ghana cedis, billions of US dollars, the government’s action and its management of the cedi have continued to fuel steep depreciation with no end in sight unfortunately.”

“So far, the decisions of the Economic Management Team, chaired by our Vice President Alhaji Bawumia leaves a lot to be desired. The reality of the Ghanaian economy today exposes the credentials of the so-called economic wizkid who was marketed as the savior of Ghana’s economy. Alhaji Bawumia’s credibility is now tatters.

“I want to use this opportunity to urge the Vice President to quit his off-beat dancing on the campaign trail and focus on the dancing cedi. There’s a lot awaiting our country as a result of reckless mismanagement by Alhaji Bawumia’s government,” he said.

The Minority’s remarks come amidst growing concerns among traders and consumers regarding the continuous depreciation of the Cedi and its ripple effects on the cost of living.

Many traders have been forced to adjust their prices upwards to offset the increased exchange rates, further burdening consumers already grappling with economic challenges.

“Bawumia will always stand with Gonjaland. He firmly supported H.E. Akufo-Addo in creating the Savannah Region, a promise that H.E. Mahama failed to fulfill during his presidency. Vote Bawumia to do more for Gonjaland.”

“I have observed so far the civility and the admirable nature with which you conduct your campaign.

“I will urge you to continue in same manner,” he said.

“As we prepare for election this year, the least we can do for you as the son of the soil is to honour you with the opportunity to serve at the highest echelon of state power.

“We shall not turn our back on you, especially having demonstrated competence, loyalty, resilience and more importantly regard for the institution of Chieftaincy.

“I am deeply persuaded that you have it in you to carry out the task ahead. You can rise to the challenge and uphold the good name of Ghana and make her greater and stronger,” he said.

The children are not your cheerleaders – NDC rants over students involvement in Bawumia campaign

Main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticised the use of students to welcome Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the North East Region, denouncing it as exploitative.

In a statement, the NDC condemned the exploitation of valuable learning time for political purposes, asserting that such actions should be condemned by all educators in the country.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also the presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), embarked on a campaign tour in the North East Region on Monday.

Upon his arrival in Walewale, he was greeted by supporters, including senior high school students dressed in their school uniforms.

However, the NDC argued that involving schoolchildren during school hours was inappropriate, as Dr. Bawumia’s visit was political rather than official.

The NDC’s Walewale Constituency Communications Officer accused the NPP of pressuring headteachers to assemble students along the streets of Walewale to welcome their flagbearer.

“It is deeply concerning that headteachers are coerced into diverting students from their classrooms to serve as cheerleaders for political campaigns. Parents entrust their children to schools with the expectation that they will receive quality education, not be used as political pawns,” he said.

He urged the leadership to join in condemning the use of students as political party cheerleaders, noting that “schools are meant to be sanctuaries of learning, not platforms for political theatrics.”

The NDC Communication Officer added that “it is unjustifiable to sacrifice the educational development of students for the political agenda of the Vice President, H.E. Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.”

  • Bawumia lied about ECG staff sabotaging paperless system – PUWU

Bawumia lied about ECG staff sabotaging paperless system – PUWU

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has challenged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s assertion that officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) sabotaged the government’s digitalization of revenue collection.

Dr. Bawumia, speaking at the Annual AGM of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa on May 9, claimed that certain IT unit staff at ECG introduced ransomware to disrupt the system’s proper functioning.

He stated that the ransomware caused the system to fail and that national security intervention was required to identify the staff responsible for the sabotage.

However, the PUWU issued a statement on Monday, May 13, refuting the Vice President’s claims as “inaccurate and misleading.”

The Union further expressed disappointment over the Vice President’s assertion that the incident was a deliberate act by ECG staff to thwart a project beneficial to the company and Ghana.

It said in September 2022, EOCO began a forensic audit on the ECG Power App, requesting the payment platform architecture, databases, API documentation, and the power app custom source code, including backend prepayment systems credentials.

The Union pointed out that EOCO employed third-party IT professionals for the task, implying that ECG IT staff were not the only ones with access to ECG’s ICT infrastructure.

The Union indicated that the first ransomware attack, which occurred on September 28, 2022, was reported to the Cyber Security Authority, as per regulation.

It said following the attack, which was perceived as a national security threat, the National Security took control of the ECG ICT system.

“In the midst of the takeover, the second and most severe of the ransomware attacks occurred on the 11th November 2022, at the time the National Security personnel had both full physical access and software administrative rights to all ECG systems. The National Security arrested and detained some ECG ICT staff for days but were later released.”

“In all these cases, the systems were restored with the major assistance by the ECG ICT staff. It is therefore factually inaccurate that National Security came in to recover the system, as reported by His Excellency the Vice President.”

  • My comment on incentivizing churches was a joke – Bawumia

My comment on incentivizing churches was a joke – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has offered clarification regarding his statement concerning incentivizing churches rather than imposing taxes on them.

He emphasized that his remark was made in jest and had been misconstrued out of context.

Addressing clergy members during a meeting in the North East Region as part of his nationwide tour, the Vice President elaborated that his comments may have been misinterpreted.

“I made that statement within the context of acknowledging the significant contributions of churches and other faith-based institutions to the country, including the construction of schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure,” Dr. Bawumia explained.

“Look at the number of hospitals the churches have built. Look at the number of universities the churches have built and faith-based organisations have built. Look at the number of people the churches and faith-based organizations take care of on a daily basis.

“Can you imagine, just take a thought for a moment that you wake up tomorrow and all the schools, universities and hospitals the churches have built disappear? They just disappear. How would Ghana be like? Ghana will collapse. Isn’t it? We will not survive in this sort of situation because there will be chaos.

“So at that point I was joking and I said, oh…people are talking about taxing churches. I don’t believe, and we will not tax churches. Because if you look at the work the churches have done, then I was joking then, maybe we should have actually paid them for what they did, not really trying to tax them. But I wasn’t really saying we should pay churches, no. I am saying that we should give incentives to churches to do more,” he clarified.

Dr. Bawumia initially made these remarks during a meeting with clergy members in the Bono East region on May 10, highlighting the importance of collaborating with churches for national development.

The Vice President said, “Unless you don’t understand the work the church has done. If you are looking at the buildings, the way they keep the society together, the universities, the hospitals, the schools, it is massive. It is just massive. Many churches have hundreds of schools. So I don’t see and I will not have a situation where we are taxing churches.

“We will rather want to give churches incentives to support what the government is doing. I want us to be partners in the way that the development partners are with us. You are our domestic development partners and we will give you incentives to do more.”

Vice President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has broken ground for the construction of a modern sports complex in Gambaga, North East Region.

The project aims to provide modern sports facilities for the youth of Gambaga and its surroundings, as well as serve as a social centre for the entire community.

Addressing the crowd at the sod-cutting ceremony, attended by enthusiastic youth, Dr. Bawumia stated that the Gambaga Sports Complex, upon completion, will enable the youth to showcase their sporting talents and provide teams with a decent playing field.

A few months ago, Dr. Bawumia commissioned the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex, which he personally constructed in Nelerigu for the community and its environs.

The contractor for the project, Wembley Sports, has pledged to complete the project, funded by Ghana Gas, within five months.

Facilities will include a 1000-seater stand, a VIP area, washrooms for teams and spectators, changing rooms, office complexes, among others.

Since assuming office in 2017, the Akufo-Addo government has constructed over 150 astroturfs across the country, a significant increase from the two public astroturfs Ghana had prior to 2017.

The Gambaga Sports Complex will be the second astroturf in the region.

My churches must be paid comment was a joke – Bawumia

Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia has provided clarification on recent remarks regarding the proposal to compensate churches instead of imposing taxes on them, aiming to recognize their significant contributions as partners in the government’s development initiatives.

Originally made during an engagement with clergy members in the Bono Region last week, Bawumia highlighted the substantial infrastructure investments made by churches in areas such as education and healthcare.

He suggested that rather than taxing churches, his administration would incentivize them to further enhance their societal impact.

In a subsequent campaign event in the North East Region on May 13, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, reiterated his commitment to fostering a strong partnership between the government and faith-based organizations.

Stressing the pivotal role of churches as primary development partners, Bawumia emphasized the potential ramifications of their withdrawal of support, cautioning that Ghana’s stability could be compromised without their contributions.

While addressing his initial remarks, Bawumia clarified that his mention of compensating churches was made in jest, emphasizing that the intent was to underscore the immense value of their work rather than advocating for direct payments.

Instead, he emphasized the need for providing incentives to encourage churches to expand their efforts in societal development.

“The church is the foremost development partner of government,” he said stressing that if their support disappears, “Ghana will collapse because there will be chaos.

“At that point, I was joking and I said people are talking about taxing churches, I don’t believe that and we would not tax churches, because if you look at the work the churches have done, then I was joking, that maybe we should have actually paid them for the work they did no really trying to tax them.

“But I wasn’t really saying we should pay churches, I’m saying that we should give incentives to churches to do more…”

    What Bawumia said initially:

“The question is are we going to tax churches? My view on this is simple. In fact, that is why I say that if you assess the work the church has done, we should rather be paying them rather than they paying us.

“Unless you don’t understand the work the church has done. If you look at the way they try to keep the society together, the universities, the hospitals, the schools, it is just massive. Many churches have hundreds of schools, massive.

“So I don’t see, and I will not have a situation where we are taxing churches. We rather want to give churches incentives to support what the government is doing.

“I want us to be partners in the way the development partners are with us. You are our domestic development partners and we will give you incentives to do more,” he stressed.

2024 elections: I will not choose a co-driver over a humble mate – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has recently shared his viewpoint favoring leadership traits such as humility and patience over impulsiveness.

He conveyed this through a vivid analogy involving a scenario of a driver’s mate aspiring to assume the driver’s role.

In a Twitter post, Anyidoho articulated his perspective, highlighting the preference for a modest mate willing to wait for their turn to drive, as opposed to an arrogant one who considers themselves superior to the driver.

“I prefer a humble mate who admits he wants to wait for his time to drive, to an arrogant mate who says he is a co-driver and believed he was more important than the driver…” Anyidoho stated in his tweet.

“The man who prides himself in being a co-driver, so he considered himself to be better than his boss and not a humble mate, took over and messed up all the driving formula. Damn!” he wrote.

This metaphorical narrative suggests a caution against overeagerness and the consequences of disregarding hierarchy and experience.

Mr Anyidoho’s analogy is interpreted by political observers as a commentary on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama, representing the eager mate and the presumptuous co-driver, respectively, in the context of the 2024 elections.

Despite his affiliation with the NDC, Anyidoho has openly thrown his support behind Bawumia’s candidacy, emphasizing the importance of humility and respect for leadership succession.

  • Prempeh International Airport to boost trade and investments in Ashanti Region – Ahiagbah

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, heralds the opening of the Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi as a catalyst for trade flows and investments in the Ashanti Region, anticipating a surge in development.

In a statement on the X platform, Ahiagbah praised President Akufo-Addo for the successful completion of the expansion work, transforming the Kumasi International Airport into the Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport.

He expressed confidence that this significant investment would unlock opportunities for economic growth and prosperity, urging support for the NPP’s vision under the leadership of Vice President Bawumia.

President Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the Prempeh I International Airport on May 10, 2024, with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, by his side.

The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and NPP members.

The airport’s transformation promises to reduce reliance on Accra for international flights, benefiting residents of the Ashanti Region and northern parts of the country.

The completion of the second phase in May 2018, which included a new terminal building and other amenities, generated excitement among residents.

Despite delays in the final phase due to financial constraints, the airport is now equipped to handle international flights, boasting a capacity of 800,000 passengers annually.

President Akufo-Addo hailed the airport as a symbol of development and progress, emphasizing its role in facilitating economic ties, international trade, and tourism.

“This project is not only critical for government but also very dear to the people of Ashanti Region. It will not only meet the needs of the people of Ashanti Region but also a symbol of development and progress. The airport will serve as an important gateway forging economic ties, supporting international trade and tourism, and promoting cultural exchange,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene, the Juabenhene Nana Otuo Siribuor II, commended the president for completing the project.

“The operation of the airport is going to make the cost of traveling cheap for us because sometimes you get to Accra and due to bad weather, you can’t fly to Kumasi. You either have to lodge in a hotel or come to Kumasi by road. We thank the President for delivering his promise to the good people of Ashanti”, Nana Otuo Siribuo II said.

“We’ve been looking forward to the completion of this airport for long and we are now excited,” he said.

Representing the Asantehene, Juabenhene Nana Otuo Siribuor II, commended the president for fulfilling his promise and highlighted the airport’s potential to lower travel costs.

Local businesses, such as the Car Rentals Association of Ghana, anticipate new opportunities arising from the airport’s opening.

While residents eagerly await the airport’s full operation, Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah explained that some ancillary works, including the runway extension, are still underway. He assured that commercial operations would commence after the completion of necessary works by the end of June, ensuring a smooth transition into the new facility.

“H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has successfully completed the expansion work at the Kumasi International Airport.

As of today, it will be known as the Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport.

“This remarkable investment will undoubtedly open up the region for trade flows and investments, setting the stage for a rapid surge in development. With your vote, Bawumia will add on to the legacy of growth and prosperity for our people. It’s possible! Great commendation to H.E. Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party,” he wrote on his X platform.

During a meeting with the clergy as part of his Bono regional tour, Dr. Bawumia highlighted some interventions and contributions made by the church since independence to justify his pledge.

At the gathering, the Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party said “If you look at the work the church has done, we should rather be paying them rather than them paying us. Unless you don’t understand the work the church has done”.

Dr Bawumia further explained that “If you look at the building, the way they’re trying to keep the society together, the universities, the hospitals, the schools, it’s just massive. Mahama, Bawumia and Alan have nothing to offer Ghanaians – Akpaloo

Presidential hopeful Kofi Percival Akpaloo, representing the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), is urging voters to rethink their allegiance to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen, and former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections.

Mr Akpalu asserted that these three figures have fallen short of fulfilling their promises to the Ghanaian populace during their respective tenures in government. He argues that despite their prominent roles, they have not substantially improved the lives of citizens.

In Akpalu’s view, their motivations appear more self-serving than genuinely focused on the nation’s welfare, a sentiment he finds troubling.

He particularly scrutinizes their commitments made to the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, criticizing proposals such as flat rates on imports, which he believes would only exacerbate import dependency without fostering local wealth creation.

The presidential candidate underscores the importance of bolstering domestic production, suggesting that many imported goods could be domestically manufactured, thereby invigorating the economy and generating employment opportunities for all, irrespective of ethnic backgrounds.

Expressing disenchantment with both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Akpalu advocates for a fresh leadership paradigm for Ghana. He calls upon Ghanaians to rally behind his candidacy, confident that his leadership would usher in the transformative change the nation seeks.

ECG’s digitalised revenue collection system was tampered by a staff – Bawumia

Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that government efforts to digitize revenue collection faced obstacles from Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) staff.

Addressing the Annual AGM of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that certain individuals within the IT unit of ECG intentionally implanted ransomware to disrupt the system’s functionality.

“They just kept it at GHC450 million every month. So, I said we need to send in a team to digitalise the new collection of the Electricity Company of Ghana, so we sent in a team, and we began the process of digitalisation.

“Can you believe that workers within the system sabotaged it? They put in ransomware into the whole system. And the system essentially collapsed. We had to send in national security to eventually find that it was some of the staff at the IT department who were culpable.”

“And we found the computer through which the ransomware was injected in the system. It took us a while to restore the system. They asked for a ransom to actually allow for this to work. Can you imagine? That we should pay, they submitted a bill that we should pay for the system to work.

Gov’t will resource some public universities to undertake mineral exploration – Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, affirmed the government’s dedication to equipping certain public universities in the country to conduct mineral exploration.

He emphasized that resources would be allocated to the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), UMAT, and the Geological Survey Department to enable the nation to maximize the benefits of its mineral resources.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during the Third Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining organized by UENR in Fiapre, Sunyani West Municipality.

The event, themed “Charting our country mining vision and the future of illegal mining,” aimed to foster effective approaches to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment and forest cover.

The Vice President highlighted the government’s efforts to collaborate with relevant institutions and traditional authorities to formalize the small-scale mining sector.

This collaboration includes providing licenses to promote responsible mining and facilitate the identification and operation of miners. Dr. Bawumia emphasized that empowering small-scale miners would significantly contribute to employment in the country.

Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, Vice-Chancellor of UENR, underscored the destructive impact of illegal mining and called for concerted actions to address the issue.

He urged stakeholders, including government agencies, traditional authorities, and academia, to collaborate effectively in the fight against illegal mining.

Prof. Asare-Bediako also highlighted the university’s contributions to combating the menace through sustainable mining and environmental reclamation programs.
