    Confirmed! Some NPP members are lobbying for running mate position

    Some NPP members are lobbying for the running mate position of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the upcoming general elections.

    According to sources within the party, there is a growing list of potential candidates seeking to be considered for the position.

    The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West constituency, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has reacted to this news.

    Mrs However, Owusu-Ekuful has expressed her disapproval of this approach, stating that lobbying for the position is disrespectful and undermines Dr. Bawumia’s authority to make his own decision.

    In an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful emphasized the need to allow Dr. Bawumia the freedom to choose his running mate without external pressure.

    She stated, “Let him be given the space to choose the person he best thinks can partner with him. I think it is even disrespectful for people to be lobbying as if he can’t make his own decision.”

    Mrs Owusu-Ekuful also urged the public to refrain from putting pressure on Dr. Bawumia to nominate his running mate, emphasizing that the position should not be sought after or gambled for.

    Bawumia was elected NPP flagbearer in December 2023 during the party’s primaries. It has been six months after the primaries, and five months to the general elections, and he is yet to announce his running mate.

    Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been tipped as the front runner in the race for the running mate position.

    Former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, has expressed concerns that recent government initiatives, such as constructing hostels and providing training programmes for female head porters (kayayei), will promote rural-urban migration.

    “I believe it is a retrogressive measure; such initiatives always set us back because we aim to stop rural-urban migration. In an attempt to do that, you don’t build an edifice in Accra. You would only be calling them to come to Accra.

    “This is a common economic indicator… One would have thought that they would be given incentives to stay back.

    So, if you build hostels and train those coming to Accra, and give them money to work, who is going to ensure that after six months they won’t leave Accra and return to the North? And if all of them leave, no one would be here,” he said.

    Recently, Vice President Bawumia inaugurated a modern hostel facility for female porters, mainly from northern Ghana.

    The initiative also featured training and educational sessions designed to equip these women with essential survival skills.

    The first group of beneficiaries has already completed the program and received startup capital to launch their own businesses.

    “He stands tall above all those contesting, and he is bringing two big constituencies on board: the northern constituency and the Islamic Constituency,” he added.

    Per recent reports the National Executives within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are deliberating on the names of two influential individuals in the country as the party’s vice presidential candidate.

    A journalist with Oman FM has indicated that Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) and a church elder are among those being considered for the role of running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

    “I am at NPP’s headquarters at Asylum Down where the party’s National  executives have met and information reaching me is that Bawumia will be handing the name of his vice president to the executives after which the name shall be announced publicly. I have gathered that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) and one elder’s name are under consideration. However I don’t know which elder exactly,” he added.

    Once approved by the National Council, the submitted nominee’s name will be disclosed to the party.

    Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has assured that Bawumia will unveil his running mate by the end of July.

    Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program on June 5, 2024, Mr Kodua stressed that the decision regarding the running mate would not be delayed beyond July.

    “I have had conversations with a lot of people, and I have also spoken to Dr. Bawumia. One thing I am very clear in my mind about is that we nominated our running mate in August 2008, but that did not help us. This time, as we aim to ‘break the 8’, if that is to happen, certain things that did not help us in the past must not be repeated. We are optimistic Bawumia will present the name of his running mate to Steering Committee latest by June, the name will be given to NEC and then National Committee. So his running mate will be named before August,” he stated.

    With approximately six months remaining until the December 7 general elections, Dr. Bawumia has yet to reveal his choice of running mate.

    The competition for the NPP’s running mate position is heating up, with several prominent figures under consideration.

     Among the potential candidates are Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and Bryan Acheampong.

    Former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, has offered advice to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the potential selection of Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, as running mate.

    He emphasized that if Napo is chosen to run alongside Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 elections, it will be crucial for him to have level-headed advisors.

    Speaking on Oyerepa TV on June 20, 2024, Prof. Marfo, who is also the Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), stated, “If you are closer to him, you will realize that he is humble despite people claiming that he is arrogant. I believe that what he needs now is coaching.”

    Prof. Marfo highlighted the importance of advisors who can guide Napo on public statements and help him manage public perception, referencing a previous incident involving Napo’s comments about the dumsor (power outage) timetable.

    “He needs people around him to coach him, like the statement that he made regarding the dumsor timetable.

    They will draw his attention to such utterances and help him understand when to apologize.

    “Coming back to apologize is one thing that I always tell politicians. You have to do something different for people to realize that you have accepted your wrongs,” he said.

    Prof. Marfo expressed confidence in Napo’s abilities, describing him as a “fine gentleman.”

    He believes that with proper coaching and the right team, Napo could be an effective running mate for the NPP.

    “If NPP wants him to be their running mate, they will still need level-headed people around him,” Prof. Marfo added.

    “What amazes me is that former President Kuffour clearly and openly chose his running mate, and so did Akufo-Addo. Now it is Dr. Bawumia’s time to decide who he wants, and the information that keeps reaching us is that people in the Jubilee House do not like the candidate Dr. Bawumia prefers.

    “If you are a flagbearer of a major party like the NPP and you’re being frightened to choose the running mate you like, then how can he be president?

    “He doesn’t have the boldness to be president. Is he not a man? The constitution has given him the right to choose, is he not man enough to?” he stated.

    He continued, “How can he be President if a small decision like this he can’t make because people are influencing him? Then he can’t do the job. How can he be President?” he questioned.

    Meanwhile, Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has emerged as the preferred choice of running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, according to a survey conducted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

    Following him is Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe constituency, who garnered 10.1% of the responses from the polled executives.

    Other notable personalities considered as potential running mates include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church of Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

    The tension began when Mahama criticized the campaign of his political rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing it as a “concert party.”

    This remark drew applause from many attendees, but Nana Boakye, an organizer for the NPP’s student wing TESCON, voiced his disapproval. He allegedly retorted to Mahama’s comment, leading to a confrontation.

    Boakye recounted the ordeal, stating, “I responded to Mahama’s statement, saying ‘Mahama wo boa’ na wo b3 wi’ [Meaning Mahama you’re lying, you will lose]. A macho man approached me, warned me to be careful, and when I asked what I had done, he slapped me in front of the former President. As I was leaving the auditorium, I was attacked again, this time more severely, resulting in injuries to my head and stomach.”

    “Anybody can check the records and all they will do is find out that Dr. Bawumia was generally blamed for the alleged corrupt conduct of some state officials however he himself was never accused of directly undertaking corrupt schemes like President Mahama was,” Nene said.

The survey also highlighted a strong consensus among respondents that the running mate should be chosen from the Ashanti Region, with approximately 84% of participants advocating for this preference.

    The NIB report underscores the appeal of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, noting his charisma and widespread popularity among party members as key factors in his favor. However, it also cautions Dr. Bawumia to consider potential challenges associated with Dr. Prempeh’s current role as Energy Minister.

    “Given Dr. Prempeh’s current role as the Minister of Energy, the ongoing power crises in Ghana could impact his candidacy. Therefore, the government may need to implement necessary measures to solidify his competence in managing the energy sector, thereby enhancing the party’s prospects in the 2024 general elections,” the report advised.

    As the NPP gears up for the upcoming elections, the selection of a running mate remains a pivotal decision, one that could significantly influence the party’s performance and appeal to voters.

    Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Nana Akwasi, expressed concern over the busing of students from various Senior High Schools (SHS) to the NPP’s youth connect program at the Jubilee Park.

    He described this act as “worrying” and claimed it was not in the interest of the students but rather an attempt to boost Dr. Bawumia’s popularity in the NPP’s stronghold.

    “The laws of Ghana do not allow partisan politics in our senior high schools, and so for the headmasters of these institutions to have released SHS students, some of whom are minors, to participate in political activities at the time they are supposed to be in school studying, indicates how low they are prepared to go to please their NPP collaborators,” said Nana Akwasi.

    The NDC also criticized the Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, accusing him of exposing SHS students to a dangerous political adventure during school hours.

    “It is a shame that somebody like Dr. Yaw Adutwum, who was brought in to introduce international best practices in our education sector, will be the very person destroying our senior high schools with unbridled partisan politicization. We are calling on parents to join forces with us to demand answers from CHASS and GES for exposing their wards to this needless political danger when school is supposed to be in session,” the NDC Chairman said.

    The “Youth Connect” program is intended to be a platform for the NPP’s flagbearer to engage with young people on his vision. However, the NDC described Dr. Bawumia’s three-day Ashanti regional tour as unproductive and uninspiring.

    Nana Akwasi also called on Dr. Bawumia to fulfill his promise of reconstructing a section of the Kejetia market that was destroyed by fire.

    However, the initiative has faced criticism. NDC flagbearer John Mahama condemned the allocation of funds for free tablets, describing it as a vote-buying strategy and pointing out that there are more urgent educational issues, such as the neglect of ongoing projects.

    Mahama has promised to address the challenges with the free SHS program if elected, accusing the current administration of poor implementation.

If you listen to Dr. Bawumia’s own pronouncements during the campaigns for 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections and you compare them to the results, and someone tells me that he (Bawumia) is a new factor, I find it very difficult to accept,” he said in Twi.

    He added, “Ghanaians would also say that President Akufo-Addo told us that he is not an economist and was delegating the economy’s running to Bawumia, and we would see wonders. He gave it to him not for one year, not two years, but for the first term of four years, and the second term of four years – 8 years – we saw nothing, and you want another four years?”

    The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to offer greater accountability to Ghanaians compared to his chief rival, former President John Mahama, should he win the presidential election on December 7.

    Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his commitment to accountability stems from his intention to seek re-election after his first term.

    Speaking to professional bodies in Kumasi during his three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, the Vice President contended that Mr. Mahama, on the other hand, would lack the same level of accountability as he would not be pursuing re-election.

    “I also believe that if you make me a president, I will be more accountable to you because I will be looking for an 8-year term. An 8-year term means that you are first going to give me a 4-year term, this means I have to work very hard to justify why you have to give me another four years.

    “And so I will be more accountable. I will come back to you and say this is what I have been able to do and then you can you will renew my license and I will drive the vehicle so we go forward.

    “I believe that my main opponent is only looking for a four-year term, that means immediately you give it to him and he goes on his honeymoon and he comes back you will not see him again. there will be no accountability but for me, you will get accountability.”

    The Vice President also revealed that the Ministry of Finance is preparing to reimburse clients of companies that were liquidated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during the financial clean-up exercise.

    Dr. Bawumia stated that this initiative aims to provide relief to affected investors while ensuring transparency and accountability in the financial market.

    “It looks like the Minister of Finance is looking forward to making some payment to customers of the liquidated companies.”

    “In the case of Gold Coast Securities and others, it is something on our agenda and I believe that the Ministry of Finance will look at it. We have engaged affected customers and we look forward to the payment”.

    Former Ghana High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Isaac Osei, has refuted claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has neglected development in the Ashanti Region.

    Dr. Isaac Osei, a former Member of Parliament for Subin, asserted that the NPP has spearheaded more development projects in the Ashanti Region than any other political party.

    Addressing journalists in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Isaac Osei emphasized that the NPP has made significant strides in the region and continues to implement crucial projects.

    “The government of President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia has done a lot in the Ashanti region and all over the place. Whether you are talking about infrastructure or whether you are talking about the number of people who have passed through school as a result of the new policy on education by the government, it is obvious that this government has done great things here.

    “The recent opening of the airport, for example, is a sure example of what the government wants to do here. The work that is going on at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

    “This government, I think, has been fantastic for the people of Ashanti. We know that it is not just Ashanti. All over the country, the NPP is going to work and work very hard to ensure that we deliver a victory for the NPP and that we have Dr Bawumia as our next president.”

    Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has joined the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team in the Ashanti Region, ahead of the country’s upcoming polls.

    Earlier, Alex Tetteh, a prominent figure in Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign and the convener for Citizen Eye, Ghana revealed that the MP would be joining the party’s flagbearer.

    Mr Agyapong left the United States to bolster the New Patriotic Party’s efforts towards securing a victory.

    “Kennedy Agyapong is in the United States of America currently. He will be back soon and he will join the campaign to get Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to become President. He said after the primaries that he will join the campaign and that is what he will do,” he said.

    On Monday, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia began a three-day tour of the Ashanti Region as part of campaign activities.

    The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has voiced concerns about the delayed completion of major health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

    He attributed the current congestion and strain on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to these delays.

    Highlighting the 500-bed Afari Military Hospital and the 250-bed Sewua Hospital as pivotal projects, the GMA emphasized that their completion would ease the burden on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, a crucial referral center serving 12 regions.

    Critiquing the government’s prioritization of Agenda 111 hospitals over the refurbishment of the referral hospital, the GMA noted fundraising efforts by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the latter.

    Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, suggested reallocating resources from Agenda 111 projects to refurbish the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, addressing inefficiencies.

    During discussions with Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Baidoo proposed redirecting resources from 10 Agenda 111 hospitals to retool the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

    In response, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the congestion issue and assured that the Afari and Sewua hospitals would soon be operational, with Sewua expected to be commissioned by July 2024 and Afari by August 2024.

    “With the overcrowding that we are seeing at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, I agree with the suggestion to dedicate resources to retooling the hospital.

    “And with particular reference to the two hospitals that are almost done, Sewua which is a regional hospital, and Afari which is a military hospital, we expect Sewua to be commissioned hopefully by July [2024] and commission Afari in August [2024] as well.”
