Veteran musician, has made a controversial statement, asserting that Ghanaians voting for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lack love for the country.
During an interview on Cape Coast-based Property FM, he expressed the view that choosing Bawumia as a candidate implies voters do not prioritize themselves and their families.
As the convener for AriseGhana and a staunch supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rex Omar contended that Bawumia has failed miserably.
“Someone that has governed this country with Akufo-Addo for over 7 to 8 years ago and all the things he said he couldn’t achieve any of them.
“Bawumia is now saying that we should vote for him to become the president of this country because he has got his own ideas,” he told the host of the show monitored by MyNewsGh.com
He fumed “If you vote for such a person then it means you don’t have good intentions for this country and it shows you don’t love yourself and your family”.
She went on to explain her position that women must put in ten times more effort to succeed in the music industry, pointing out that there is a mindset that doubts women’s aptitude in many fields, including music, and that women must continuously demonstrate their abilities.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided to extend the timeline for its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to select a running mate for the upcoming elections.
Typically, the party’s constitution requires the selection of a vice-presidential candidate one year before elections.
However, due to Dr. Bawumia’s recent election as the flagbearer, the party’s National Council, with the authority to make exceptions, has agreed to waive this requirement.
This extension grants Dr. Bawumia additional time to carefully evaluate his options and choose the most suitable running mate. The decision was announced by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a national council meeting.
“In line with our constitution, particularly about article 13 (32)- ‘the vice presidential candidate shall be a known and active member at least five years and shall be nominated by the presidential candidate at least 12 months before general elections when the party is not in government or the president is not the candidate.’
“The National Council may, however, dispense with this requirement under special circumstances. From the interpretation of this article, it presupposes that today should have been the day our leader of the party and our presidential candidate should have presented his running mate to the national council.”
“However, upon request from the presidential candidate that because his election was done on the 4th of November 2023, he needs a bit of time to continue with his consultation before he brings the proposed name for running mate to the national council,” he said.
Spokesperson and economic adviser to the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako, has called on Bright Simons and Franklin Cudjoe to apologize for what he considers misleading comments regarding Vice President Bawumia‘s statements on the credit scoring system in Ghana.
During the 57th graduation ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Vice President Bawumia praised the Ghana card for its potential in establishing a robust credit scoring system to uniquely identify borrowers.
In response, IMANI Ghana’s Vice President sought to undermine the accuracy of the Vice President’s information, a sentiment echoed by IMANI’s President, Franklin Cudjoe. They referenced credit bureau company XDSDATA Ghana Limited, claiming it already had the system the Vice President mentioned.
However, XDSData Ghana Limited clarified through a press release that it has not produced individual credit scores in the country. Dr. Boako, in a separate post on Twitter and Facebook, challenged Simons and Cudjoe to apologize for their comments.
XDSData acknowledges its capability to generate individual credit scores but highlights challenges due to the absence of a unique identifier. According to the Managing Director, George K. Ahiafor, Ghana Card penetration currently stands at 35%, tracked by the Bank of Ghana (BoG). Ahiafor anticipates the release of individual credit scores when Ghana Card penetration reaches 90%, expected by the end of 2024.
Presently, facilities are accessed using various forms of identification, making it challenging for the bureau to capture a credit subject’s total exposure accurately.
However, Mr. Ahiafor emphasized that XDSData produces credit information comparable to international credit bureaus, providing adequate data for lenders to make informed credit decisions.

Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized that all members of the party, from the flagbearer to polling station executives, bear a collective responsibility to strengthen the party for the benefit of the next generation.

Onua TV/Radio presenter, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has made a shocking revelation about the alleged maltreatment meted to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by some big names in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
According to Captain Smart, the Vice President has been belittled by many individuals in the ruling party thanks to President Akufo-Addo, whom Captain Smart alleges has sidelined his vice in the running of the country despite his progressive policies.
In an edition of Onua TV’s Maakye Show, Captain Smart named Gabby Otchere-Darko, Asante Bediatuo, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as some of the individuals who purportedly have no or less reverence for the Vice President.
“But Akufo-Addo and his family never gave Bawumia the opportunity to do anything. I am being frank. The kind of information I have, you don’t have it. Asante Bediatuo doesn’t respect Bawumia. Gabby Otchere-Darko does not give reverence to Bawumia.
“Those who are close to Akufo-Addo don’t respect him. There is no idea in this world that he suggested to Akufo-Addo that has been taken.
“The Finance Minister, Nana Bediatuo, Gabby, the president himself, Captain Koda, name them, they don’t take his suggestions. Then they come out to boast saying NPP is Danquah-Busia,” Captain Smart said.
He noted that this maltreatment got to the Vice President’s wife, Samira Bawumia, during a visit to the Jubilee House in December 2022. Captain Smart alleged that Mrs Bawumia had a first hand experience of the ill treatment against her husband.
“Someone should ask Samira Bawumia. Last year, 28th December at 2:45pm, she wept like a baby. You should ask her what happened. Ask Samira Bawumia, after one cabinet meeting where she visited her husband at Jubilee House, they were saying hurtful things about Bawumia.”
Captain Smart alleged that Dr Bawumia was the reason behind NPP’s 2016 election victory, nonetheless “they don’t respect Bawumia one bit. He is suffering.”
He cited an instance, where one of the Vice President’s cadres is allegedly yet to be fixed a year after it got faulty due to lack of funds.
“One of Bawumia’s cadres got spoilt and it’s been over a year. They say they don’t have money to repair it.”
According to Captain Smart, Dr Bawumia “has cried more than 17 times in his office as Vice President” due to how he is being treated by some members in his government.
Meanwhile, Captain Smart alleges that it is President Akufo-Addo’s plan to take the NPP into opposition in order to still have control of the party.
“They just want to take the NPP into opposition so they can have control over it. I won’t say anything to Bawumia but when you go into opposition, there you will see how the Akyem people dislike you.”
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has maintained that despite the prevailing economic challenges, the government has successfully generated over 2 million jobs in the past seven years.
According to Dr Bawumia, available statistics affirm that this figure represents the highest job creation rate since the country gained independence.
Addressing the launch of a cash disbursement for beneficiaries of the YOUSTART programme in Accra, Dr. Bawumia asserted the government’s commitment to further job creation for the youth of the country.
“What is remarkable is that, notwithstanding the global economic challenges, major global economic disruptions that have taken place with regard to COVID-19 that many of you have talked about and its implications on businesses as well as the Russia-Ukraine war, notwithstanding these global challenges, our government over the last seven years has created 2.1 million jobs. This is the highest number of jobs created by any government since the Fourth Republic,” he added.
Meanwhile, a report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reveals that during the third quarter of 2022, one in every four young individuals aged between 15 and 24 years, equivalent to 24.2%, was not involved in education, employment, or training.
According to the Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2022 Third Quarter Labour Statistics Report, this percentage corresponds to approximately 1.5 million persons within this age group.
The findings highlight a significant portion of the youth population that is not currently participating in education, employment, or training activities.
“More than half of the youth are in Accra (312,394), Ashanti (300,161), Eastern (131,341), and Central (129,182) regions. In 13 out of the 16 regions, more than 20 per cent of young persons, 15 to 24 years were not in education, employment, or training. Eastern Region (30.0%) has the highest proportion of youth, with a figure about twice that of Bono Region (14.5%) which has the lowest proportion,” GSS noted in the report.
Approximately 48 hours after the media showcased efforts of a man self-identified as Receipts Guy, who initiated a bold campaign by printing old tweets of prominent members of the ruling government, including the president and vice president, one of his billboards has been removed.
Sharing the development with visual evidence through pictures and a video, the X user highlighted the takedown of the billboard featuring an old tweet by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The X user raised questions about the state of democracy in Ghana, considering the removal of such a billboard.
On this particular billboard, Receipts Guy had reproduced the following:
“The Vice President cannot respond to the 170 claims because the economy is in a total decline and the statistics don’t lie,” which is a tweet posted by Bawumia at 9:06 PM on December 5, 2016.
However, the billboard had vanished from his update, which included before and after pictures to support his claims.
“Is this democracy?” the caption with the two photos said, with the one that went with another tweet with a video, saying, “As expected, THE BILLBOARD HAS BEEN TAKEN DOWN!!!” followed with three laughing emojis.
Earlier, according to GhanaWeb’s report, an X user identified as Receipts Guy, believed to be pro-NDC, took an unconventional approach that some might deem as provocative.
Delving into the archives of old tweets from prominent figures such as Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a key member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the X user embarked on printing these messages on large billboards.
While the majority of these tweets originated from leading members of the NPP, a few also came from opinion leaders and journalists in the country.
In a tweet, Receipts Guy mentioned that this initiative was prompted by popular demand.

In a post shared on X on November 28, 2023, Prof. Mensah questioned the apparent underutilization of the Ghana Card for vehicle purchases, especially considering the presence of established car dealerships in the country.
He threw down a challenge, encouraging individuals to experiment by attempting to use their Ghana Card at a car dealership to determine whether they would be granted permission to buy a car on credit.

In a surprising turn of events, founder and President of the Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, has has proclaimed that a moment of humiliation has transpired within John Mahama’s household.
This claim originates from the recent incident in which the Yagbonwura, the Overlord of Gonjaland, chose to bestow the traditional title of “Unity Chief” upon Vice President Bawumia.
However, it’s worth noting that John Mahama is considered a son of Gonjaland, unlike Dr. Bawumia.
This is the basis for Mr. Anyidoho’s assertion that the Overlord has overlooked his own son in favor of conferring the “Unity Chief” title upon an outsider.

A Ghanaian economist residing in the United States, Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, has counseled Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to cease criticizing former President John Mahama for his 24-hour economy proposal.
Dr. Iddrisu contends that Mr. Mahama’s envisioned policy is not only plausible but also attainable in the country.
“It is crucial to acknowledge that the extent of a 24-hour economy may vary within a country and is often concentrated in major urban centers. Finance expert and health insurance technocrat, Sylvester Mensah, has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, for his remarks against the ’24-Hour Economy Policy’ proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Security and safety analyst, Dr Adam Bonaa, has called on the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to consider factors other than geographic and ethnic background while deciding on his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
He claims that although certain names have been mentioned and the discussion has mostly focused on geographic and ethnic background, it would be beneficial for the vice president to broaden the scope to include aspects like discipline and gender, among other things.
“If you ask me, I will say that the vice president together with those in charge of getting a running mate for the NPP flagbearer should broaden the scope and use a certain yardstick in selecting this person. But all that we are hearing is that the person will have to come from a certain region so it’s almost like a done deal once you are from the Ashanti or a certain region.
“But if you ask me, I think they should be using a certain scale; discipline and all that. If you ask me, it will be good to include a disciplinarian, someone like the Minister of Roads, Honourable Amoako Atta,” he told GhanaWeb in an interview.

Former President John Mahama and Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia exchanged pleasantries when they joined former President John Agyekum Kufuor at the final funeral ceremony of his deceased wife, former First Lady Theresa Kufuor.

A state funeral in honor of the late former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor, is taking place at the forecourt of the State House.
The final funeral rites for Mrs. Kufuor will be held at Heroes Park in Kumasi on Saturday, November 18.

At the National Chief Imam’s Maulid yesterday, Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia jokingly referred to his senior brother, former president John Dramani Mahama as Mallam John.
This was after the former President in his speech had demonstrated fair knowledge of some Islamic Hadiths.
Dr. Bawumia, while taking his turn at the podium, jokingly said in Hausa that Mr. Mahama should convert to Islam since he has demonstrated such knowledge about the Hadiths.
The Vice President then referred to Mr. Mahama as Mallam John amid laughter, which eventually infected a cross-section of the persons present including the Chief Imam himself, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu.
Though this was clearly a joke between two brothers, some NDC Supporters have expressed disgust at the Vice President for his actions.

“Anyone who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the party or who joins or declares support for another political party or an independent candidate, when the party has sponsored a candidate in a general election or bye-election, automatically forfeits his or her membership of the party,” he said.
He added: “You are aware that not long ago, Alan Kyerematen wrote a letter to us expressing his desire to withdraw from the party. As per this policy, he is affected so it means that he is no longer part of the party.
“We have seen certain videos of people following him and claiming they will vote for both him and the NPP Parliamentary candidate. I will release a letter to such individuals to make it clear that the forfeiture policy is in effect within the party. They are no longer party members.”
His remarks follow a viral image showing Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, adorned in Alan Kyerematen campaign gear during a Movement For Change event.
Despite Alan Kyerematen’s resignation from the party and decision to run independently, Buaben Asamoa did not announce his departure from the NPP.
The recent statements from the NPP General Secretary confirm that Buaben Asamoa is no longer recognized as an NPP member for not supporting the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In the party’s presidential election on November 4, Dr. Bawumia secured the flagbearer position for the 2024 general elections with 61.43 percent of the votes.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, has reaffirmed his commitment to being “President for all” if he is elected.
He emphasized that, regardless of individuals’ religious and political affiliations, his vision is to create an inclusive nation where everyone has equal opportunities.
He made this known during a visit by the Council of Regional Imams to his residence to congratulate him on his flagbearer election.
“I am for all, and if I am elected President, in shaa Allah, by the good people of Ghana, I will be a President for all, regardless of one’s ethnic, religious and political affiliations,” Dr. Bawumia said.
“I will be president for all because poverty, hunger, and disease don’t know whether you are a Muslim or a Christian, NPP or NDC, or whether you are this tribe or that tribe.”
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the diversity of Ghana, emphasizing its blessings of peace and harmony. He stressed the importance of nurturing and fortifying the harmonious relationship between the country’s two principal religious groups, Christians and Muslims, to sustain this peaceful coexistence.
“If we leave peacefully in Ghana despite our religious and political differences, it is because of such tolerance and respect for diversity,” he said.
“It is important for us all, especially between our two religious groups, to continue to respect this diversity engage more with each other. We have to strengthen this beautiful relationship in order to preserve it and the peace we enjoy in this country.”
The Imams lauded Dr. Bawumia for his commitment to embracing diversity and encouraged him to persist in his frequent interactions with the Christian community to foster unity.
They expressed their disapproval of the recent assaults on Dr. Bawumia by Sam George, an NDC MP, regarding the Vice President’s religious affiliation. The Imams refuted these accusations, asserting that Dr. Bawumia has not committed any religious offense by engaging with Christians to encourage mutual cooperation.

“The Prophet Muhammad himself had a very good relationship with non-Muslims and Islam does not forbid the building and strengthening of harmonious relationship between Muslims and Christians.”
“When the Prophet went to Madina, he established a very good relationship with the Christians. There are also examples of Muslim leaders in the world, including in Muslim countries who have good relationship with their Christian colleagues.”

This visit, as reported in the November 10, 2023 edition of the pro-government Daily Guide newspaper, occurred on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
Describing it as a “calculated political move,” the newspaper said the meeting held over dinner “was aimed at renewing the bonds of friendship between the two influential figures as well as foster collaboration for the betterment of the nation as next year’s election beckons.”
Neither the camp of the Vice President nor that of the Assin Central MP has released any images or details of the mentioned meeting. The Assin Central MP, who emerged as a significant power broker in the NPP due to his surprising performance in the NPP presidential flagbearer race, was involved in this undisclosed meeting.
According to the report, “Dr. Bawumia is expected to visit other aspirants and opinion leaders in the NPP as he tries to mend fences and build bridges ahead of the 2024 elections.

The most recent public sighting of the two was on November 4 during the official announcement of Bawumia as the race winner, an event where Ken was reportedly “compelled” to attend.
During the November 4 vote, Dr. Bawumia secured 61.47% of the total votes from nearly 200,000 NPP delegates, emerging as the victor, while Ken Agyapong secured about 37.41%.
At an event declaring the vice president the winner on Saturday night, Ken Agyapong pledged support for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign.
“This is the only thing I’ve been preaching, and I must admit this election is fair and my grassroots have spoken; therefore, I accept the results in good faith,” Mr Agyapong said moments after the results was announced.
He vowed his allegiance to the flagbearer-elect to aid in defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and to secure a victory beyond the current eight-year tenure.
“So, party members we should put everything behind us and let’s unite this party…, I believe we can break the eight and that’s what I’ve been preaching,” he added.
Former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South, Nana Akomea, has stated that if the newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, chooses him as his running mate for the 2024 general elections, victory is assured.

“Judging from the widely publicized expected margin of not less than 80% in favour of the Vice President, I am inclined to think that the 60% vote for him provides a clear indication that the Vice President does not have total control of his own Party. The election results must also be analysed against the background that the Vice President has been campaigning for the Flagbearership since 2020 and has been the beneficiary of both State and Party sponsored support.”
Regarding the commonly heard slogan “Break the Eight” within the NPP, Mr Kyerematen conveyed his opinion that this narrative does not resonate with the everyday concerns of the majority of Ghanaians, who are dealing with economic difficulties and unemployment. He also stated that the NDC does not offer a credible alternative.
As a result, he called for the emergence of a “Third Force” in Ghana’s politics and emphasized that the recently formed Movement for Change, under his leadership, represents a beacon of hope for the nation.
“Well, the emerging chorus and narrative from the Party for ‘Unity’ to Break the Eight, has very little relevance to the loud public demand for change in the political leadership of our country, to respond to the critical challenges of our time. The call to Break the Eight does not reflect the everyday concerns of the majority of Ghanaians, about the ailing economy and the lack of jobs for the teeming youth of Ghana.
“So for me, the chances of NPP Breaking the Eight is very slim. In the same vein, however, the NDC does not provide a credible alternative. It is against this background, that the ever-increasing appetite of Ghanaians for a ‘Third Force’, must be considered as the only hope for Ghana to rise again. This is where the newly established Movement for Change under my leadership, becomes the saving grace for Ghana.”

Former Minister for Interior during the Kufuor administration, Alhaji Malik Al-Hassan Yakubu, has lauded the election of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.
He expressed his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to foster economic development and growth in the country.
The former Yendi lawmaker, Alhaji Malik Al-Hassan Yakubu, characterized Dr. Bawumia‘s election as a pivotal choice that will initiate substantial progress in Ghana’s global economic standing.
He explained
“It [Bawumia’s election] is a choice of destiny, and in the epoch of every country’s history, there are periods which, if you recognize and take advantage of them, then you are up for a significant effort in your country’s history. We are in a world economy where certain ideas, when applied, bring about major changes in your economy, and China has done that and is bearing results. In Ghana, Bawumia has been advocating a certain idea, which is the digital economy, and he has applied it in Zimbabwe, where it has worked. He keeps saying digitalization is the way to go. If you look at the Port and Harbor Authority, GRA, and other areas, it is working and bearing fruit. If you were to see the number of technocrats who came to witness his election, you would understand that he is a significant asset,” the former Yendi legislator told Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM.
He continued, “The direction he is going, if he is given the opportunity to lead this country, I have no doubt in my mind that we will witness wonderful progress in our economy. The quality of his ideas will move this country forward, and I have no doubt in my mind. If he goes on to win the 2024 elections, we will see significant improvements in our economic fortunes”.

On April 5, 2023, Vice President Dr Bawumia posted a picture that had the Ghanaian flag to the left and the NPP’s red, white, and blue flag to the right, with the inscription “It Is Possible” at the top of the two flags.
This was before he announced his decision to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race.
Six months later, Dr Bawumia becomes the NPP flagbearer after beating his closest contender, Assin Central MP, Ken Agyapong during the party’s presidential election on November 4, 2023.
But all this while, much has not been said about his slogan. A member of his campaign team, Sammi Awuku, has provided details explaining the origin of this slogan and its purpose.
In an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe over the weekend, Mr Awuku noted that the slogan was crafted by Dr Bawumia himself due to its significance to him.
According to Mr Awuku, there were naysayers who dismissed Dr Bawumia’s chances of ever becoming NPP’s leader due to his religion and ethnicity, but for the Vice President, his notion remained ‘it is possible’ hence the slogan.
“He mounted a spirited campaign. For many people, when he started, they said it wasn’t possible but he was determined to make history. That slogan ‘it is possible’ was not coined by anybody of the campaign team. It was coined by himself.
“In political campaigns, you test the slogans. Our focus gurus, people coming with all sort of ideas but the ‘It is possible’ slogan came from him. And his belief is that it is possible to also do it together. Many people with the mindset that the NPP will never go for a candidate who is a non-Akan. He believes that is was possible.”

Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has cast doubts on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 General Elections following his recent win in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary.
Despite receiving 61.47 percent of the votes, Cudjoe suggests this endorsement may not be enough for a national victory.
In a statement following the NPP’s internal election results, Mr Cudjoe pointed out a historical pattern where successful presidential candidates in Ghana’s general elections had previously secured more than 64 percent in their party’s primaries.
“No candidate has gone on to win the general elections if the person had obtained less than 64 percent of the vote in the internal primaries,” Mr Cudjoe highlighted in a Facebook post on Sunday.
The comment follows the election of Dr. Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer on Saturday, November 4, where he secured 118,210 votes, translating to 61.47 percent of the valid votes.
His nearest rival, Ken Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, received 71,996 votes, equating to 37 percent.
Adding historical context to his analysis, Mr Cudjoe mentioned, “No candidate in Ghana’s history has gone on to win the general elections if s/he obtained less than 85% of the vote in internal primaries, except in 2000, which was a very special election (the country had never before seen a switch of power through the ballot).”

Our paths crossed for the first time in 2006 at the University of Ghana, specifically Commonwealth Hall. I had gone to ‘City’ to see a course mate of mine. He walked in, said a few words and checked out.
My course mate would later reveal to me that the gentleman had started the journey of aspiring to lead the students front as the SRC President. Legon has often been littered with young, vibrant and ambitious young men and women with a desire to lead the students front. Some of them had gone on to have great political careers.
It’s a long list. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Freddie Blay and more come to mind. The Political careers of these gentlemen started long before they became the popular names we heard on radio and television. The University of Ghana served as a platform for them to nurture their leadership skills to hit the ‘road’ after school.
I thought it was always great to test one’s mettle for a leadership position and that it was really up to him (Sammy) to push that agenda if he so wished. Months later, I saw his posters pop up all over campus. To the best of my recollection as a student of the Premier University, a strong ‘City’ affinity appeared to give student leaders who vied for positions a cushion for success.
They were good at mobilizing the brothers on election day and be supportive of the entire campaign process. When they found a candidate good enough from their quarters, they rallied around the individual with unmatched support. There was a challenge he would however have to surmount. Lord Koranteng Hammah.
A charismatic, vocal, populist, magnetic, eloquent speaker. He was the man Sammy had to get past for the ultimate. In Lords corner was DM Ofori-Atta, another top guy. A duo who could arouse the emotions of the student’s body and get them onside. A duo that gave the school authorities one hell of a time in dealing with the needs and wants of students.
How I vividly recall that night on the campaign front when Hammah and DM visited Sarbah Main Hall, my Hall of residence at the time, and electrified the place with their presence. Readers who were students of the Hall would not forget that night quickly. At a point in his speech, Hammah took out a white handkerchief from his pocket, akin to Kwame Nkrumah, and made that famous statement. ‘They are few, but we are many.’
The entire electoral campaign was so intense that a decision was taken by the school authorities to literally discontinue the process. The wishes of Sam, Hammah and others to lead the students front did not materialize. They probably got on with their lives after all that intense campaign to pursue other dreams I reckon. Well, that was what I thought. Sam had other ideas though. The Legon saga was not going to end a dream.
A few years down the line, I bumped into him at the compound of one of the Media Houses in Accra where he had appeared as a guest on a political program representing the New Patriotic Party.
I got into another office at that station and the lads in there were incidentally glued to that Political program. He spoke with a lot verve and strongly. He articulated his views in a clear and dispassionate manner and seemed to be on top of a lot of issues. I just watched.
He would appear on many political shows subsequently and gradually appear to be winning the hearts and minds of many especially the Youth. He would later vie for the National Youth Organiser position and win the elections in 2014 with 471 votes. Now this was at the time the NPP was in opposition with many party faithful especially the Youth disillusioned with the outcome of the 2012 election petition and looking for that young and dynamic voice who could rally the numbers together with the support of the National Organiser. Enter Sammi Awuku.
Together with then National Organiser John Boadu who later transitioned to hold the General Secretary’s position, the duo would comb the hook and crannies of this country to solicit for votes and mounted multiple platforms with then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. He would earn all kinds of names and titles in the process. Some he has maintained till this day. Capo appears to be the defining one.
For me, what defined Sam’s political career was the presser he addressed early on the 9th of December, 2016 with the election results filtering in. A young, confident and assertive Awuku told the world at a presser by the Youth Wing of the party that with over 80% of the votes counted, the NPP had a sizeable lead and called on the Electoral Commission to declare the party victors in the election.
He was not forcing the hand of the Electoral Commission in declaring the results. He seemed to have the numbers we were all waiting for. He knew something that many didn’t know. We know what happened later that day. Madam Charlotte Osei would announce the results in favour of the NPP.
Many young political guys appear to come out rude, disrespectful or worse after aligning with parties in power. I have seen and met loads of them across the Political divide. Some who could not afford three square meals speak with embarrassing levels of arrogance and crass. Not Sam. Polite, respectful and accommodating. He appears to have time for anyone and everything. And oh, we have crossed paths on multiple occasions since.
I was in Koforidua to cover the NPP delegates election as a media person in 2018 when he aspired for the position of National Organiser. I recall interviewing him before the vote. His message was poignant. He had set himself the task of leading the NPP to glory in 2020 as the lead organiser and he was going to make that happen if given the nod. The results of that election were announced at dawn the following morning.
He walked to our stand (Class 91.3fm) and respectfully engaged us. I asked him a simple question centered on how quickly he was rising in the party. At 3:36am, he smiled and responded courteously. ‘For God and country. This is only part of the process. I together with my other executives have a responsibility of helping the party retain power and that is the ultimate, he stressed.’
Sam may have since moved on to work with the Youth Employment Agency as Board Chairman and National Lotteries as Chief Executive but his influence and relevance is not lost on the Party faithful. His political ambitions are clear. Next step, Parliament. He is vying for the Akwapim North seat, a traditional NPP seat in the 4th republic. Agyare Koi Larbi, Lawyer William Ofori Boafo and Nana Dokua Bissue have held the seat since 1996. Looks like a done deal from what I gather.
If the numbers I saw on the 4th of August for the Ofie Walk is anything to go by, then he is in a comfortable lead. He is a grassroots man delivering on multiple fronts in the constituency and beyond. To get the sitting MP Nana Dokua move out and contest another seat in Accra (Okaikoi North) tells a story. He is the man of the locals.
His works must have culminated in landing the job as Campaign Manager of Dr Mahamadu Bawumia ahead of the NPP Presidential Primaries. You don’t get such top jobs everyday if you are not cut out for the position. I have no idea how the Vice President settled oh him as his campaign capo. What I do know however is that Sam is a go getter, a man of the people and a man who can work the electoral numbers for victory.
In recent times when the campaign has became a bit too intense with salvos being fired from opposing camps, he has dealt with them with tact and finesse with his comments and behind the scenes diplomacy. Indeed, Hon Ken Agyepong has since revealed that following his showdown comments, a telephone conversation was facilitated by Sammy for the two(Hon Agyepong and Dr Bawumia) to iron out any issues that may have arisen.
He has already gone past the Special Delegates conference as Capo with over 66% of the votes for candidate Dr Bawumia. Can he get past November 4th and put the icing on the cake on December 7th, 2024? On the evidence of his works, it must be tough to bet against him leading his candidate to glory. Time would tell.

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has accepted the results of the just ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential elections.
Addressing NPP faithfuls at the official declaration of the results in Accra, the firebrand MP asserted the elections was fair and transparent, adding that he will join forces with the flagbearer elect to secure a third term at the 2024.

A total of 203,439 delegates participated in the election conducted today, November 4, in the various constituencies across all 16 regions of Ghana.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 118,210 votes, representing 61.43 percent, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong garnered 71,991 votes (37.41 percent), former Agric Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto got 1,459 votes (0.76 percent) and former Mampong MP, Frimpong Addai-Nimoh secured 781 votes, representing (0.41 percent).
He will subsequently compete against the candidate from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December 2024 general election.
Bawumia’s triumph is viewed as a significant advancement in his pursuit of the presidency.
Dr Bawumia has already assured the party’s delegates that he will secure victory over Mahama in the upcoming general elections.
He contends that he is the sole contender capable of handing John Mahama a third consecutive electoral loss.
“They know we will break the 8, and they know that John Mahama cannot take me on in the North, and they know that I will beat him in the North and this is why they don’t want me to be the flagbearer,” Dr Bawumia said on his campaign trail in the Tema West constituency of the Greater Accra Region,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Afriyie Akoto has congratulated Dr Bawumia for his victory today.

President John Dramani Mahama has predicted that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be dumped by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after using him for the party’s dirty job.
He said he felt sorry for Dr Bawumia because he would never be given the opportunity to lead the NPP when the time comes.
Speaking at a mini rally of the NDC in Lawra Friday as part of his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, the President said opportunities in the NPP were restricted.
Using what he said happened to Alhaji Aliu Mahama as an example, President Mahama said, “Alhaji Aliu Mahama was Vice President under the NPP government. He served faithfully under President Kufuor and, so, when eight years was up and President Kufuor was leaving, the natural order of succession is that he should have been given the opportunity to lead that party but, 17 people contested him and defeated him.”
“That is why I say NDC is a party of opportunity because if NDC wasn’t, who am I, a boy from Bole born in Damango, who am I to stand here and call myself President of the Republic of Ghana?”
President Mahama said in the NDC, opportunities were opened to all no matter a person’s ethnic background.
Turning to his “northern brothers” ; the President said, “I feel sad when I see some of our northern brothers running around and also doing certain things. They will use you and dump you.”
“Let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for President in NPP. They will never give it to him, I can assure you,” he told hundreds of supporters of the NDC that gathered at the rally.
He added, “When the misfortune hit us and our father Professor Mills passed away, the Constitution said the Vice President should take over, I did. But then we were close to an election. If it was another party, they would have insisted that there should be a Congress and in that Congress I would have been contested and they would have given the leadership to somebody else.”

Following the conclusion of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer election, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister for Food and Agriculture and a contender in the race, has extended his congratulations to the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his resounding victory.
“First of all, let me congratulate the Vice President for such an emphatic victory; it means the NPP has spoken with a huge voice that we have chosen Dr. Bawumia to lead us into the election next year,” Afriyie-Akoto remarked, indicating the party’s overwhelming support for Bawumia’s candidacy.
