  • NaBCo impacting positively on graduates in Bolgatanga

The Implementation of the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCo) by the government is positively impacting on the livelihoods of trainees in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, Mr Johnson Agolmah, the Municipal Coordinator has said.

He said apart from the monthly stipends of GH¢700.00, which was hitherto difficult to come by, many graduates who completed various tertiary institutions and could not get employment had secured permanent employment through the initiative.

Mr Agolmah said this in Bolgatanga during an entrepreneurship and career pathways training organized by NaBCo for trainees in the Municipality.

NaBCo is one of the numerous interventions being introduced by the Government to tackle the issues of graduate unemployment by engaging 100,000 graduates in seven sectors of the economy including; education, health, local government, agriculture, entrepreneurship, revenue and digitization.

The main objective of the programme is to provide opportunities for graduates and Ghanaian youth to be equipped with employable skills to enable them establish their own businesses or be well prepared for the job market.

After almost two years of implementation, the Municipal Coordinator explained that out of the 926 trainees who were initially engaged in the various models in the Municipality, 266 graduates had secured permanent jobs and exited the programme, reducing the number 660.

The Coordinator noted that, the contribution of most of the trainees towards the development and growth of their respective agencies was enormous and were able to build their skills and knowledge and ready for the job market.

“A lot of the institutions that we have placed our trainees into have given us success stories of our trainees, even though there are also some bad stories, the success stories of our trainees outweigh the bad stories.

“For example, in the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, a lot of our trainees have been collecting revenue which increases the revenue base of the Assembly and also help build the skills of the trainees and many of the trainees have been placed in various departments including; budget, works, Human Resource and revenue,” he noted.

The Municipal Coordinator said the NaBCo programme was not to provide permanent employment for all trainees but to equip them with the necessary experience to secure for themselves jobs elsewhere.

It was to further build their capacities to establish their own businesses instead of over relying on government for permanent employment and that would help reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

Dr Wilfred Akapanga, the Upper East Regional Manager of Quality Life Assurance Company, who took the trainees through various trainings on entrepreneurship and career development, said success could only be achieved through hard work.

He explained that whilst it was prudent to pray for success, it was imperative for the trainees to work hard to put their innovative ideas to reality in order to secure the success they yearned for.

He, therefore, urged the trainees to take advantage of such trainings to build the knowledge of starting their own businesses instead of depending on government for employment opportunities.

  • Coronavirus slowing down livestock business chain in UE

Businesses in the livestock value chain are experiencing a sharp decline in the Upper East Region as a result of the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the country.

When the Ghana News Agency visited the Bolgatanga market to ascertain the progress of business in the midst of the Pandemic, it was revealed that the demand for animals especially cattle and small ruminants had decreased.

Since the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus in the country, government has undertaken a number of measures including; the closure of the country’s borders to foreigners and a ban on public gathering among others.

All Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies at their own levels implemented stringent measures including; the closure of markets especially on market days, relocation of traders among others as part of efforts at curbing the rapid spread of the virus.

The Upper East Region which has so far recorded 19 positive confirmed cases of the virus with one death was no exception of these regulations and the situation is having a toll on the livestock business value chain.

Speaking with dealers of both the cattle and small ruminants in the Bolgatanga Municipality, they complained that since the spread of the virus in the country, their businesses had almost come to a standstill.

They said their daily sales had dwindled and the number of customers continued to reduce by the day leading to low income levels.

They said due to the closure of the borders, people who used to bring animals from neighbouring Burkina Faso were unable to do so.

At the small ruminants market in Bolgatanga, it was observed that many ruminants such as goats and sheep among others were on sale, but there were no customers to purchase them.

Mr Akolbire Adongo, Chief of the Small Ruminants Association, said since the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly closed down the Bolgatanga Markets on four consecutive market days, their businesses had declined.

He said people who used to travel from outside the region including; Burkina Faso and the North East Region, no longer patronized the market for fear of contracting the virus.

The Chief disclosed that some of the ruminants which were sold at GHC500.00 and GHC300.00 were being sold at GHC350.00 and GHC200.00 respectively.

Mr Adongo explained that apart from the COVID-19 pandemic which had prevented traders from transporting the animals from the region to the southern sector, the Ramadan season of fasting was also a contributory factor.

Mr Ayela Apana, the Chairman of the Bolgatanga Cattle Dealers Association, said due to the restriction on movement, it was difficult for them to get cattle to buy for sale, thereby making the prices of the cattle to increase.

He said people who used to bring cattle from outside the region no longer did so due to the numerous restrictions put in place by government to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Timothy Timbil, Secretary of the Bolgatanga Butchers Association, said the hospitality industry and the chop bars, restaurants and other food vendors were major stakeholders in the livestock value chain but due to the coronavirus the patronage had reduced as most of the facilities had closed down temporary.

“I used to slaughter about three cattle in a day but due to the emergence of the coronavirus coupled with the Ramadan when I even slaughter one cow, I always struggle to sell all the meat and it is having a toll on my daily earnings.”

  • Bolgatanga East again fails to elect a Presiding Member

The Bolgatanga East Assembly in the Upper East Region has for the second time failed to elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of voting.

On Thursday, January 23, 2020, the second Assembly was inaugurated with 16 elected and eight appointed Assembly members, however, the new Assembly could not get a Presiding Member and hence the election was postponed.

After the first and second rounds of voting, Mr Martin Ayimbire Akanane, the Assemblyman for Zuarungu Central Electoral Area had 10 votes in each round, while his counterpart, Mr Bismarck Akolgo, Assemblyman for Zuarungu Electoral Area had 14 votes in each round.

Though one Assemblyman was absent and therefore could not vote, none of the candidates had the two-third majority as stipulated by the Local Government Act to be declared a winner.

Speaking to the media after the failed attempt to elect the Presiding Member for the second time, Reverend Emmanuel Abugre Abole, the District Chief Executive (DCE) expressed disappointment at the conduct of the Assembly members.

The DCE said with the experience of some old Assembly members gained from how the first Assembly elected the previous Presiding Member, he expected same to have been replicated to ensure a smooth running of the Assembly.

Mr Abole explained that the election of a Presiding Member was critical in the even distribution of development projects across the districts as it paved the way for various committees to be formed and projects adopted to fairly benefit every electoral area.

He urged the Assembly Members to build consensus to enable them to elect a Presiding Member in their next attempt to accelerate the development of the young district.

The election was conducted by the Electoral Commission.
