  • COVID-19: Be watchful of PPEs donations – African leaders told

African leaders have been urged to be wary of donations from China in the form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and medical supplies as the COVID-19 global pandemic takes a toll on the continent.

This follows widespread reports of faulty and contaminated Chinese PPEs across the world.

There have been several reports of various countries including Australia, United Kingdom, Spain, Holland and Czech Republic rejecting a range of products meant to fight COVID-19 from China.

Mrs. Theodosia Jackson, Principal of Jackson College of Education who made the call in a statement, said Africa must subject such donations to strict scrutiny to avert further spread of the virus.

She said the rejection of certain Chinese PPEs in some parts of Europe must serve as a red flag for African leaders to be cautious in accepting donations from the Asian giant.

“All that glitter is not gold. Much as we need support to manage the pandemic, we must not endanger the lives of our people”, she cautioned.

She believes there is a sinister motive by the Chinese and some western countries to undermine the sovereignty of Africa and continue to manipulate the continent to satisfy their parochial interests.

Mrs. Jackson is also appalled by the suggestion by two French scientists that a coronavirus vaccine they are working on should be tested in Africa.

“Such level of disrespect to Africans must be a source of worry for African leaders to sit up and vigorously pursue an agenda to restore our dignity”, she bemoaned.

She applauded the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for the swift manner he condemned the statement by the two scientists.

She said Africa had been treated with contempt for far too long and urged heads of states on the continent to unite to build a prosperous and independent Africa capable of managing its own affairs.

“Africa has no excuse to be poor with all the natural resources at our disposal. It is time for African leaders to begin to explore how best to harness our resources to make the continent self-sufficient”, she opined.

The overwhelming nature of the virus, she noted, is a wake-up call for African leaders to build the capacity of indigenous companies to meet local needs of the people in terms of production.

This, she said, would not only create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth but also improve the economy to enable the continent wean itself from foreign aid.

  • Coronavirus: Aggrey Memorial will not be used as quarantine center Angry Chief, youth protest

The Chief and people of Brafoyaw in the Central region have blocked the main entrance of Aggrey Memorial Senior High School to prevent any attempt by authorities to use the school as a quarantine center for COVID-19.

The Chief and some youth of Brafoyaw numbering about a hundred Saturday morning blocked the entrance and vowed to resist any attempt to use the school as a quarantine center.

According to the Chief of Brafoyaw, no school has been used as a quarantine center in the country and so, he does not see the need for authorities to start so in the central region.

Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM on Saturday, 11 April 2020, the chief said the teachers and their families who live on the school campus will be at risk if the school is allowed to be used as a quarantine center.

He further said the people of Brofoyaw will also be at risk if any person from Aggrey tests positive and travels to his town with the virus.

He is, therefore, calling on authorities to use the Cape Coast sports stadium as the quarantine center rather the school.

“Why are they bringing people to be quarantined here in Aggrey? If any of them test positive we the people of Brafoyaw are not safe. They should take them to the Cape Coast stadium, besides, the teachers and their families who live in this school will also be at risk,” he stated.

So far, Ghana has recorded 378 COVID-19 cases with six deaths and four recoveries.

  • Guidelines to access govt’s GHC600m stimulus package

Deputy Minister for Finance, Mrs. Abena Osei Asare has laid down the guidelines to be followed by small scale businesses that want to access the government’s GHC600 million stimulus package.

This package forms part of the various interventions made by the government to mitigate the adverse impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on businesses, individuals and households.

The GHC600m soft loan scheme will have a one-year moratorium and two years repayment plan.

Deputy Minister for Finance, Mrs. Abena Osei Asare explained that there are some criteria for the said package and businesses will need to meet the requirement.

According to her, a business or an individual must first be associated with a recognized trade group, have a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and also own either a bank account or a mobile money account.

“There are three things that everybody who hopes to qualify for such relief should have.”

“One is that you should belong to a recognized trade association; two is that you should have a tax identification number (TIN) and then three you should have a bank account or a mobile money account. These are the three basic things that we will be looking out for,” she said.

“But the criteria for identifying these beneficiaries will be developed by NBSSI, so they will roll those out in conjunction with the rural banks. We think that to manage these things effectively or to implement it effectively, we should establish a steering committee chaired by both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Trade and Industry,” she stated.

  • Coronavirus: Private school teachers disappointed in govt over neglect

The coalition of Concern Private School Teachers Ghana (COPSTEG) says it is disappointed in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to factor teachers into the Coronavirus budget.

In a release, leadership for the group said, government has continuously ignored the plight of private school teachers in its policy intervention and has done same in this season of the lockdown.

According to the release, COPSTEG is saddened by the development although it considers the lockdown directive a crucial.

“But one thing the government or the President failed to ask is how are these teachers going to survive since our major source of income is the small salary we receive and this salary also comes from the small school and the feeding fee our employers take from the Parents.”

However, COPSTEG called on the government to do the needful.

    Read the full statement below.

Coalition for Concern Private School Teachers Ghana – COPSTEG

Non-Payment of Private School Teachers Salary.

The coalition of Concern Private School Teachers Ghana (COPSTEG) is expressing its disappointment in the government and the Education Ministry for neglecting them in this trying times as the government pretends such people do not exist.

On the 16th March 2020, teachers wake up one morning to hear in the news that President Nana Addo has directed all schools be closed down due to the COVID 19 pandemic which is spreading across the country.

We believe that it’s a call in the right direction since most of the students are likely to be infected by this virus.

But one thing the President failed to ask is how are these teachers going to survive since our major source of income is the small salary we receive and this salary also comes from the small school and the feeding fee our employers take from the Parents.

As a result, most of the schools are unable to pay their staff which has to put our members into starvation.

But as we speak, government has paid all public school teachers leaving the private school teachers. Even though we are not employed by the government, the president should at least put some measures in place to see to it that we those in the private schools are also paid.

We have waited patiently, thinking that the president in his last address will mention a package for we private school teachers but nothing of that sought happened. So, for God’s sake what have we done to the government? We ask, is it that government does not realize our contribution to the education sector.

We are therefore calling on the President to:

    1. Liaise with Private school owners to release some incentives for private school teachers if salaries can’t be paid between April and June.

    2. Put measures in place to ensure that 2/3 of private school teachers’ salary passes through the controller.

    3. Employ some of the teachers who are currently at home doing nothing to support sensitise the campaign against the spread of COVID 19.

    Signed.

    Sir I.B. Chambas

    Acting National President.

Mrs Serwaa Owusu-Ansah, the Programme Coordinator World Child Cancer, who presented the items, said children are the future of the country and the donation was to ensure that those who are providing care to them are well protected in this era of COVID-19.

This, she said, would augment government efforts to support COVID-19 response in the country.

Prof Lorna Awo Renner, the Head of Pediatric Oncology Unit, receiving the donation on behalf of the Department, expressed gratitude to the NGO for the gesture.

This would go a long way to protect health workers and enable them deliver quality service to children particularly those with cancer who visit the facility, she said.

“We look forward for a long collaboration as this would help prevent the spread of the disease among children who are vulnerable,” she said.

Prof Renner said COVID-19 has gotten the attention of many people even across the globe but there are other diseases such as cancer, malaria, TB among others and urged Ghanaians to take note of these and also protect themselves as such.

She advised parents to report children to the hospital should they detect changes in them for early treatment.

Prof Renner said the hospital has put in place measures to prevent the spread of the disease among women whose children are on admission.

“We have also implemented full preventive measures, observing social distancing, hand washing, the use of sanitizer. All these seek to minimize contact with the children,” she said.

She urged mothers to stay at home to prevent exposing their children unnecessarily to people who are infected and only go out if need be but advised them to use face mask to protect themselves.

World Child Cancer is a Non-Governmental charity organization was established in 2007 and is aimed at improving access to diagnosis, supportive palliative and potentially curative care for children with cancer around the world.

  • 37 die out of 247 recorded cases of CSM in Upper West

Cerebral Spinal Meningitis (CSM) has killed 37 people in Upper West Region out of a total number of 247 cases recorded in the last 13 weeks, giving a case fatality rate of 15.4 percent.

Providing an update on the disease, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, indicated that Nadowli-Kaleo District recorded the highest number of 12 deaths out of 74 cases, followed by Nandom District with 10 deaths out of 76 cases.

The Jirapa Municipality is next with nine deaths out of 42 cases; Wa Municipality, four deaths out of 27 cases, while Wa West District and Lawra Municipality recorded a death each out of a total of 15 and eight cases recorded respectively.

Apart from the Sissala East Municipality, which recorded five cases with no death, the remaining districts namely; Lambussie, Sissala West and Wa East Districts have not recorded any case of the disease yet.
Dr Bin Salih described the 15.4 per cent fatality rate as high and attributed it to late reporting to health facilities on the part of victims.

The Regional Minister noted that, the Regional and District Public Health Management Committees and the meningitis response plan had been activated to guide investigations among others.

Also, the training and use of Chiefs, Queen mothers and other stakeholders to support in the sensitization of their respective communities on the signs and symptoms of the disease and the need for early reporting to health facilities also took place.

Other efforts in the areas of surveillance; laboratory investigations; case management; advocacy, communication, community engagement and social mobilization; and logistics had also been taken care of to enhance the fight.

Emphasizing on logistics, Dr Bin Salih noted that in addition to the existing stock of drugs, the World Health Organisation (WHO) donated 5,000 vials of ceftriaxone and 1,100 bags of infusion to the Region to support case management.

He mentioned poor health seeking behaviour by the population, stigmatization due to similarity of symptoms of CSM and COVID-19, inability of majority of facilities to perform culture, and low community patronage in sensitization programmes as some of the challenges militating against the fight.

He cautioned the public against stigmatizing CSM or COVID-19 patients or communities saying, “We need all hands on deck to slow down the incidence of CSM in the Region”.

While commending individuals and organisations so far for the support, Dr Bin Salih also called on individuals and corporate organisations to come to the aid of the Region, stressing “no contribution shall be deemed small”.

  • Coronavirus: Take further bold & radical steps Akufo-Addo urged

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has expressed concerns if further steps are not taken “all the good efforts applied will come to nought and eventually our country will be consumed by this ravaging novel virus”.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Director of Research and Advocacy of the Bureau, Etornam Korda, said Ghana must be ahead of Coronavirus.

She said the periodic updates from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is inspiring but the latest update as regards the lockdown and the data on the spread of infections gives cause to worry.

The Bureau has therefore asked government to impose a 21-day lockdown across all the 16 regions, shore up tracing and testing capacity efforts, put more into education and monitor suspected cases to minimize frequent cases of escapes as well as expand testing sites across all the regions “within the shortest possible time”.

Ghana has so far confirmed 378 cases of the viral disease with six deaths. Four have, however, recovered.

On Thursday when he addressed the nation, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said his efforts at containing the spread of the virus have been “modestly successful”.

But the Bureau said it is better to impose other measures than wait for a disaster to happen.

“We therefore urge all Ghanaians to join us in the call for the extension of restricted movements across the country and support Government in these trying times.

“We further call on all citizens and residents to comply with the directives on restriction of movements; as our collective discipline remain key in this fight against the nCov-19.

“We encourage the men and officers in the law enforcement front to demonstrate tact and professionalism at all times in their enforcement duties.

“Indeed, these are not pleasant times and lockdowns/restrictions are costly both to the individual, business and the State, but the alternative is disaster that is even more costly.”

  • Sweden challenges Trump — and scientific mainstream — by refusing to lock down

Much of Europe is still on coronavirus lockdown, with severe restrictions on movement and penalties for those who transgress.

But not Sweden. Restaurants and bars are open in the Nordic country, playgrounds and schools too, and the government is relying on voluntary action to stem the spread of Covid-19.
It’s a controversial approach, and one that’s drawn US President Donald Trump’s attention. “Sweden did that, the herd, they call it the herd. Sweden’s suffering very, very badly,” Trump said on Tuesday.
But the Swedish government is confident its policy can work. Foreign Minister Ann Linde told Swedish TV on Wednesday that Trump was “factually wrong” to suggest that Sweden was following the “herd immunity” theory — of letting enough people catch the virus while protecting the vulnerable, meaning a country’s population builds up immunity against the disease.
Sweden’s strategy, she said, was: “No lockdown and we rely very much on people taking responsibility themselves.”
The country’s state epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, also pushed back against Trump’s criticism that Sweden was doing badly. “I think Sweden is doing okay,” he told CNN affiliate Expressen. “It’s producing quality results the same way it’s always done. So far Swedish health care is handling this pandemic in a fantastic way.”
As of April 9, Sweden has 9,141 cases of the Covid-19 virus and 793 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University figures.
Swedish authorities have allowed a large amount of personal freedom unlike other European countries.
Swedish authorities have allowed a large amount of personal freedom unlike other European countries.
Sweden’s actions are about encouraging and recommending, not compulsion. Two days after Spain imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 14, Swedish authorities were encouraging people to wash hands and stay at home if sick. On March 24, new rules were introduced to avoid crowding at restaurants. But they very much stayed open.
So did many primary and secondary schools. Gatherings of up to 50 people are still permitted.
Tegnell defended the decision to keep schools open. “We know that closing down schools has a lot of effects on health care because a lot of people can’t go to their work anymore. A lot of children are suffering when they can’t go to school.”
Elisabeth Liden, a journalist in Stockholm, told CNN the city is less crowded now. “The subway went from being completely packed to having only a few passengers per car. I get the sense that a vast majority are taking the recommendations of social distancing seriously.”
But she added that while “some Swedes won´t even kiss their spouse, others are throwing Easter parties.”

    Fresh surge

Much of Sweden’s focus has been to protect the elderly. Anyone aged 70 or older has been told to stay at home and limit their social contact as much as possible. One Swedish government official said that on the whole people supported the government’s approach, but many were “upset about the fact that no ban on visiting homes for elderly was set until recently [April 1], and now the virus is widely spread among these homes, causing the death toll to rise.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) is skeptical of Sweden’s approach. Noting a fresh surge in the country’s infections, the WHO told CNN Wednesday that it’s “imperative” that Sweden “increase measures to control spread of the virus, prepare and increase capacity of the health system to cope, ensure physical distancing and communicate the why and how of all measures to the population.”
Swedish restaurants have very much remained open.
Swedish restaurants have very much remained open.
“Only an ‘all of society’ approach will work to prevent escalation and turn this situation around,” said a WHO Europe spokesperson.
Sweden’s “curve” — the rate of infections and deaths caused by coronavirus — is certainly steeper than that of many other European countries with stricter measures. A study by Imperial College London estimated that 3.1% of the Swedish population was infected (as of March 28) — compared to 0.41% in Norway and 2.5% in the UK.
As for deaths, by April 8, coronavirus accounted for 67 fatalities per 1 million Swedish citizens, according to the Swedish Health Ministry. Norway had 19 deaths per million, Finland seven per million. The number of deaths rose 16% on Wednesday.
Some Swedish researchers are demanding the government must be stricter. This week several prominent Swedish clinicians wrote an open letter lamenting that large numbers of people are visiting bars, restaurants and shopping malls, even ski slopes. “This unfortunately is translating into a death toll that continues to climb in Sweden.”
Cecilia Söderberg-Nauclér — a virus immunology researcher at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute — is one of more than 2,000 health professionals and researchers who signed a petition demanding tougher action. She told CNN: “We are not winning this battle. It is horrifying.
“Where I live people are working from home, but they go to local restaurants, local cafés and they mix up old people and young people from schools and universities. That is not social distancing.”
Söderberg-Nauclér says the situation in Stockholm, where the great majority of the country’s infections have occurred, is “lost,” but adds: “It is not too late for rest of the country. I wish we would lock down and take control of regions not affected in same way.”

    Weather the storm

Tom Britton, professor of mathematical statistics at Stockholm University, models how infectious diseases behave in a population. He believes 40% of the Swedish capital’s population will be infected by the end of April. While acknowledging the difficulty of measuring the rate of infection, he told CNN that “my best guess today would be 10% or a bit more” of Swedes currently have the virus nationwide.
Some opponents of the government’s policy fear that reliance on voluntary behavior will cause a much faster spike in cases, potentially overwhelming the health care system. Sweden also has one of the lowest ratios of critical care beds per capita in Europe, and the government official who spoke with CNN said that supplies of protective equipment are only just staying ahead of demand.
In some ways, however, Sweden is better prepared to weather the storm than other countries. Some 40% of the country’s workforce worked from home regularly, even before the virus struck and Sweden has a high ratio of people living on their own, whereas in southern Europe it’s not uncommon to have three generations under one roof.
Emma Grossmith, a British employment lawyer working in Stockholm, says another factor in Sweden’s favor is a generous social welfare net that means people don’t feel obligated to turn up for work if their young child is sick. State support kicks in on day one of absence from work due to a child being sick. “The system here was already well set up to help people to make smarter choices which ultimately benefit the wider population,” she told CNN.
But Grossmith notes a big gap between the way Swedes and expatriates view the virus. “There is a native trust in the system amongst those who have grown up with it. In contrast, many of the expat community feel that the strategy has neither been communicated clearly nor robustly challenged in the Swedish press. They are deeply worried.”
The next month will determine whether the Swedish system got it right.

  • Global economy will be radically different after coronavirus – Vice President Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has predicted a radical change to the outlook of global economy after the coronavirus pandemic.

The deadly coronavirus, which started in China last year, has not only devastated humanity, it has also ravaged economies around the world as countries battle to stop the virus.

Writing on his Twitter account on Friday, Dr. Bawumia predicted the effects of the pandemic will change the global economic outlook.

“The post COVID-19 global economic architecture is going to be a radically different one,” wrote the Vice President.

With countries, especially African nations, leading their own unique charge against COVID-19, Dr. Bawumia has also predicted that the experience will make African countries more self reliant, especially in the production of goods and services.

“It will usher in more self-reliance in the production of goods and services. We in Africa have to get ready for this future.”

Many respondents to his tweet commended and agreed with the Vice President’s tweet.

One of them was economist, Professor Peter Quartey of the University of Ghana, who added that Ghana must position itself and produce a lot of import substitutes.

“Well said Veep,” wrote Professor Quartey.

“Ghana certainly has to position itself and produce a lot of import substitutes. The small business soft loans to be administered by NBSSI can make a lot of difference if it is well targeted and given to deserving businesses,” he added.

The Asomah-Cheremeh paid a working visit to the mine to review the proactive actions and protocols put in place to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

While mining workers are exempt from the lockdown announced by government, Chirano has continued to implement numerous measures and has taken extra steps to continue safe operations at the mine.

For example, staff who have the capacity to work from home have been doing so, and those whose presence is required on-site are restricted to the catchment area of the mine.

  • Coronavirus has proven that our stickers, oils and calendars are fake – Prophet Oduro

Controversial Prophet Kofi Oduro says the outbreak of Coronavirus in Ghana has proven that the production of stickers, hand bands, creams, oil and calenders by some men of God is useless.

The head pastor of Alabaster International Ministries reiterated that Coronavirus has exposed all the fake men of God who were hiding behind fake miracles to deceive their members.

Coronavirus has made us know that pastors can save us. Coronavirus has made us know that our oil, stickers, cream, bands and calenders are useless. If they are not useless, they should cure coronavirus with it.”

In a video that has gone viral, the man of God is seen daring all prophets in the country to cure coronavirus patients if indeed they claim they perform miracles.

“If it can help, I Kofi Oduro will be the one promoting it for them. I will go on TV, radio and make noise about it. Coro has made us know that people were just being deceived.”

  • Lockdown: I also feed on food prepared for the vulnerable Gender Minister

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) Hon Cynthia Morrison has revealed she has been eating food meant to be given to the vulnerable in the society during the lockdown.

“I and my team, all eat from the food they prepare for the vulnerable. I do that to make sure they are fed with good food”, she revealed.

The Minister revealed this in an interview with TV3 network monitored by MyNewsGH.com.

According to her, she chose to eat with the poor in the society to make sure they are fed with nutritious, tasty and healthy food just as President Nana Addo has directed.

During her interview, Madam Cynthia Morrison noted that, there were no partisan considerations in the recruitment of caterers who prepare the food adding that, they are the very people who have been cooking for the School Feeding program across the nation.

Feeding of the vulnerable is part of government initiative to make sure the poor in the society are also catered for in order to make its two weeks in lockdown areas.

However, there have been a lot of complaints from various persons over food not reaching some people believed to be vulnerable but rather distributed among party footsoldiers.

Government is targeting to feed about 400,000 people every day during the period of lockdown in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi.

  • Use free water and electricity wisely Akufo-Addo begs Ghanaians

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the vulnerable in society to use electricity wisely.

He made this statement in his sixth Coronavirus broadcast on Thursday, April 9, 2020.

In the recorded broadcast, the president announced that those who will enjoy free electricity and water, as well as other consumers who fall outside of this category, who will also enjoy a 50 per cent reduction in the cost of electricity for the next three months should judiciously use the utilities provided.

In his address, he said: “We have decided further measures of mitigation for Ghanaians for the next three months…Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e.: lifeline consumers. This will cover persons who consume 0 to 50-kilowatt hours per month for this period. This forms part of relief interventions by the state amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Other categories of consumers will enjoy a 50 percent discount within the same period. For all other consumers, residential and commercial, the government will absorb 50 percent of your electricity bill for this period using your March 2020 bill as the benchmark.”

“Nevertheless, I urge all Ghanaians to exercise discipline in the use of water and electricity,” he stressed.

President Akufo-Addo in his previous address to the nation announced that the government will absorb the water bills for all Ghanaians for the next three months, that is, April, May and June.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged all water tankers operators, both public and private, to mobilize and ensure that there is constant water supply to all vulnerable communities.

  • Coronavirus: Ghana was more prepared than UK – Gifty Anti

Ghanaian journalist and broadcaster, Gifty Anti has disclosed how some countries including Italy and the United Kingdom had not put any measures in place even after recording some cases of the novel coronavirus.

Oheneyere as she is affectionately called, recently returned home from government’s mandatory quarantine for persons returning to the country after the closure of the country’s borders.

According to her, at the beginning Ghana was more prepared because “at the airport in Ghana there were checks, people wearing masks, but nobody checked us when I arrived in Amsterdam; no sanitizer, nothing”.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ with host Kwami Sefa Kayi, Gifty Anti said Ghanaian authorities and security agencies handling the COVID-19 fight should be given some credit because with everything she went through she believes Ghana’s preparedness to curb the pandemic is commendable.

  • Govt announces 50% electricity reduction for commercial and residential consumers

Government has today, April 9 announced a 50% reduction in electricity consumption for commercial and residential consumers as part of measures to ease the economic burden on Ghanaians following the Coronavirus outbreak.

Additionally, the government will also absorb electricity bills for the ‘poorest of poor’, ie, frontline workers aiding the fight against the deadly Coronavirus.

“Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e for all lifeline workers, that is free electricity for persons who consume zero to 50-kilowatt hours a month for this period.

“In addition to all other consumers, residential and commercial, the government will absorb again, 50 per cent of your electricity bill for this period, using your March 2020 bill as a benchmark,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo in an address to the nation on April 9, on measures taken by government mitigate the spread of Coronavirus explained; “if your electricity bill was 100 cedis, you will pay only 50 cedis with government absorbing the remaining 50 cedis.”

The move, however, comes as a relief to all citizens after President Akufo-Addo earlier announced in his fifth address to the nation on April 5 indicating the government was going to absorb all water utilities for all citizens for next three months starting from April, May and June respectively.

Additionally, he also announced the decision taken to extend the restrictions of movements by one more week, beginning 1 am on Monday, April 13 to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

  • Coronavirus: Akufo-Addo succumbs to Mahama’s pressure to reduce electricity

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that government will fully cover the electricity bills of low-income consumers in the country with others enjoying a 50 percent reduction for three months amid the Coronavirus fight.

It comes after former President, John Dramani Mahama pressured for the reduction of both electricity and LPG due to economic crises Ghanaians are facing.

Mahama had also urged government to give tax relief to data users in the current crises.

The former president seems vindicated now as his clarion calls have yielded positive response from government that had already agreed to take care of the water bills for all Ghanaians for April, May and June 2020

The leader of the opposition NDC had argued that electricity and gas are more expensive than water, urging government to consider reducing the costs of power and LPG gas as part of his social intervention for Ghanaians.

In a Facebook write-up, Mr Mahama said: “Since a significant number of people are in WFH (working-from-home) mode, the use of data and ICT mediums have become imperative.

“The government should consider, also, a temporary relief from the Communication Service Tax (CST) in order to grant some relief to data users.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday, April 9, 2020, addressed the nation on measures taken by the government to prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus in the country.

In a televised speech, the president indicated that the initial two-week partial lockdown in some parts of Greater Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi has been extended by a week more.

The one-week extension takes effect on Monday, April 13, 2020, at 1 am.

Akufo-Addo added, “Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, i.e. for all lifeline consumers, that is free electricity for persons who consume zero to 50 kilowatt hours a month for this period. In addition, for all other consumers, residential and commercial, Government will absorb, again, fifty percent (50%) of your electricity bill for this period, using your March 2020 bill as your benchmark.”

He explained, “if your electricity bill was GH¢100, you will pay only GH¢50, with Government absorbing the remaining GH¢50. This is being done to support industry, enterprises and the service sector in these difficult times, and to provide some relief to households for lost income.”

Ghana’s current coronavirus case count according to President Akufo-Addo is now 378.

  • Pointing out Mahama projects used in coronavirus fight a useful lesson – Kwakye Ofosu

Former Deputy Minister for Communication under the Mahama administration, Felix Kwakye Ofosu says the attempt by a section of the public to point out some projects of the previous administration being used for the Covid-19 fight is a useful lesson.

Some members of the NDC and a section of the public have raised concerns about the use of some projects executed under the Mahama administration which was described as non-existence by the NPP during the 2016 campaign season.

The President has announced that the Aayololo buses procured by the former government will be used to provide free transport services to health workers. Other projects playing a significant role in the fight is the University of Ghana Medical Centre, the Accra Regional Hospital and the Bank of Ghana Hospital.

Members of the governing NPP believe the attempt to point these things out are steps by the opposition to engage in partisan politics during this critical period.

But in a television interview on April 9, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said it is rather a useful lesson because most of these projects were criminalised by the NPP in opposition and it is a legitimate exercise.

He explained that the said criminalisation caused the defeat of Mahama, therefore, it is necessary to let people assess its usage for the country to appreciate useful investments in the health sector for unforeseen occurrences.

  • Woman allegedly refused food items for not possessing an NPP card

Failure to have the New Patriotic Party (NPP) membership card implied no food.

This is according to a woman who was painfully bounced by some NPP members when she requested for some food that was being distributed at Shiashie in Accra.

  • Coronavirus not linked 5G technology NCA clarifies

Contrary to assertions and speculations about Coronavirus being spread by the emissions from 5G Technology, the National Communications Authority has debunked such linkages.

In a statement copied to GhanaWeb, the NCA urged the public to disregard the misleading videos and audios circulating on social media, describing them as misinformation.

Outlining the evolution of mobile technology in the country, the NCA explained that although 5G had not yet been introduced it would provide faster internet speed without health repercussions.

“The fifth-generation (5G) is the next generation of mobile technology which has not yet been deployed in Ghana. However, it promises significantly higher internet data speeds which will enable innovative products and services in agriculture, transportation, education, health, security and commerce.

All generations of mobile cellular technology (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G) operate on radio frequencies (RF). These frequencies are not visible, but they exist in the atmosphere; they are what enable radio and television stations to transmit news and information to us. They generate non-ionizing radiation which pose no harm to human beings,” a portion of the statement read.

In a bid to calm fears, they also averred that although there have been several years of research into the potential health risk associated with radiofrequency signals and telecommunication installations, the World Health Organisation has said there is no conclusive evidence to show exposure to such emissions had any unhealthy effects.

The NCA maintained that stringent measures have been put in place to protect Ghanaians from any such exposures.

“The NCA, as part of its consumer protection mandate, has established a Type Approval laboratory with test and measurement equipment for Radio Frequencies (RF), Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) (See attached pictures). The laboratory undertakes measurements to ascertain the safety of mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc) and field measurements of radiations from mobile base stations at frequencies below 6GHz which is the range of frequencies for 2G, 3G and 4G in Ghana. Future 5G deployments in Ghana will also utilize some frequencies below 6GHz as well as higher frequencies and within safe limits.”

They assured the public that emissions from the mobile telecommunication bases in Ghana are safe.

“The measurements taken by the NCA clearly indicate that the non-ionizing radiations from mobile base stations are even more stringent and safer than those set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which is the international body responsible for safe use of non-ionizing radiation,” they added.

There have been several debates on social media with many describing the phenomenon as a conspiracy theory.

Founder and leader of the Christ Embassy trended on Twitter after preaching and stressing that people desist and shun the 5G network since it was being used as a tool to propagate the Coronavirus.

  • Eyes on the Ground: Redco Market turns ‘mad house’ after Madina market shuts down

Barely 24 hours after the Madina market was shut down by the municipal authorities for non-compliance by traders and consumers, the Bohye market has become the target for shopping of basic amenities.

A video recorded by a twitter user, @akyaa_danqz exposed the spate of rushed patronage at the market by consumers and head porters, notably referred to as ‘kayayei.’

The incident which occurred Wednesday morning saw several people throwing caution to the wind and failing to adhere to the social distancing directive and massing up in crowds.

The incident raised a lot of concerns about the spread of the deadly Coronavirus since such defiance was what led to the closure of the Madina Markets in the first place.

The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly announced the closure of the Madina main market for trading activities until further notice on Monday.

The affected areas included Doku, Nkulenu, Market Drive, Asante & Asante, and Nkwantanang Roads, the Market Loading Bay, Car park and the Main Market.

The members of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) arrived at the decision due to the failure of traders to adhere to the social distancing protocols issued by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the area. Jennifer Dede Afagbedzi, in a statement, explained that the decision was made due to the continuous abuse of the safety precaution which would, in the long run, have dire consequences on the control of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

As an alternative, the municipal assembly directed that Bohye market be patronised and used by the traders and consumers.

  • Coronavirus: Human Rights Reporters Ghana condemns civilian killing, calls for justice

In the wake of the lockdown restrictions NGOs, CSOs, and the public complained about the excessive force used by deployed security officers to enforce the lockdown directives.

First, it was the 67-year-old widow who was hit at the waist by a police officer, next; it was the shooting of a civilian by a military officer.

Eyewitness accounts have painted a different picture from what the military made public that the civilian was trying to disarm the officer.

The Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) in its first press release condemned earlier brutalities and called for respect for the rights of offenders.

Today, (HRRG) has issued another press release condemning the alleged shooting and killing of a civilian by a military officer at Ashaiman Municipality.

The human rights organization stated in its press release that it is aggrieved by the shocking incident of shooting and killing of a civilian on Monday, April 6, 2020, at the Ashaiman Municipality.

It is the latest to add its voice to the calls of sister NGOs, CSOs and human rights activists in the country to condemn the act of lawlessness exuded by the military officer involved in no uncertain terms.

It further called for an independent probe into the matter by the authorities with immediate effect.

“We believe justice must be served without delay, with an appropriate sanction for the officer if found culpable by the outcome of investigations”.

While the HRRG applauded government for the measures put in place to contain the coronavirus pandemic it also cautioned the public to comply with the lockdown protocols and always remain at home, especially those who have nothing essential to do outside during the period to avoid any confrontation with the security personnel and to help in the fight of COVID-19.

It also called for respect for human dignity and rights under the law, especially during the 14 day lockdown period which it believes must be jealously guarded to save lives and protect public health and safety.

  • Triple track system hits Kumasi Market to control coronavirus

Traders at the Kumasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region have begun a shift system in three groups to limit contact and spread of the coronavirus.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) implemented the system to prevent overcrowding in order to satisfy the social distancing protocols rolled out by the government during the partial lockdown.

According to the system, different traders will be present at the market at different times. The new measure started on Thursday, April 9, and the traders permitted into the markets had red tags for identification.

The intervention had to be implemented following a shutdown of the market due to congestion as the country battles the deadly coronavirus.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, told theghanareport.com that the Assembly realised the population of the traders exceeded 5,000.

“So, we told them that we have to strike it (the number) by three and introduce what we call the colour card system—red, gold and green,” she explained.

This implies that approximately 1,142 traders will have the opportunity to operate on any particular day.

Thursday was for traders with red tags. The yellow group will report on Friday and the green tag bearers will be allowed to sell on Saturday, in that rotational order.

Ms Aboagye said any group that violated the arrangement with have their tags revoked and suspended from trading at the market indefinitely.

Maa Lydia, a cassava seller at the market, endorsed the new arrangement.

“It is not a problem for me, it has helped a lot because of the virus. The measures KMA leaders have undertaken is very helpful,” she said.

On Thursday, the traders were somewhat practising social distancing, but most of them were not wearing face masks and gloves.

The KMA had earlier distributed Veronica buckets and sanitisers and admonished the traders to observe social distancing and personal hygiene.

  • Be considerate; free electricity will collapse economy Franklin Cudjoe

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Ghana, has said the Ghanaian economy will fold up if the government gives free electricity to its people as part of the efforts to deal with the effects of the coronavirus infection.

He appealed to the public to be considerate in their demands from the government during this period.

Government has absorbed water bills for the next three months as announced President Nana Ado Dankwa Addo last week.

This forms part of his measures to ameliorate the economic hardship Ghanaians are saddled with over the COVID-19.

But the Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, although said the measures are commendable, but added that the government must do more to cover other vulnerable people during these difficult times.

Speaking on the issue on GHOne TV, Sammy Gyamfi posited that if former President John Dramani Mahama was the one in power, he would have lessened the burden on Ghanaians by providing free electricity during these trying times.

“Nana let me, first of all, reiterate the recommendation for free electricity to be provided for Ghanaians because that, for the NDC, especially HE John Dramani Mahama, is non-negotiable. I can tell you unequivocally that If President John Dramani Mahama was President of the Republic of Ghana would have been enjoying free electricity by now,” he said.

But in a short statement, IMANI Boss, Mr Cudjoe said : “let us slow down with our demands for too many free things from the government. Certainly free electricity will collapse the economy.

“I know, I hear you, the government started this free festival before covid-19 when it was warned to be careful and also signed $178m free for no work KelniGVG and also $150m wasteful tax money on the EC.

“We should urge government to stop these needless waste but we must be considerate in demanding too many free things especially when we do not know when the mad Corona Virus will leave us.”

  • Social distancing non-compliance: Old, New Kasoa markets to shut down today

The Kasoa old and new markets will be closed down temporarily at 4 pm on Thursday, 9 April 2020, the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly in the Central Region has announced.

According to the Assembly, the closure of the markets follows the inability of the market leaders to ensure traders comply with the social distancing directive recommended by the World Organisation (WHO) as one of the key ways of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

“There has been general admonishment for people to regulate social distancing protocols to avoid overcrowding in our markets. The Assembly, after several engagements with the market leaders and the relevant stakeholders, has come to the conclusion that the market actors are reluctant to comply with the spacing, rotation and other healthy guidance policies proposed by the assembly to curtail the spread of the virus. To this end, Kasoa New and Old Markets shall be closed effective Thursday, April 9, 2020, at 4 pm”, the Assembly said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Assembly indicated that it has made alternative plans for satellite markets within the area to operate while the two markets remain closed until further notice.

The satellite markets, which will be operationalised during the closure of the two markets, include Datus, Ofaakor D/A school parks, Akweley Anglican and Odupongkepehe Zion.

Also, the satellite markets are expected to close by 4 pm each day and regular market tolls paid.

The Assembly also urged traders and buyers to comply with the new arrangements because it will “employ every legal means at its disposal” to ensure compliance with the directive.
