  • Nigerian Signwriter jailed 15 years for abduction, defilement

A Nigerian Signwriter who abducted a 14-year-old girl and defiled her has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Gender Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters, Accra.

Efe James Edema, 19, charged with defilement and abduction, pleaded guilty.

The court presided over by Mrs Abena Amponsah Boansi convicted Edema on his own plea.

Prosecution led by Inspector Opoku Aniagyei narrated that the complainant was the father of the victim.

Inspector Aniagyei said the complainant resided at Ayikuma together with the victim and that the accused resided at Nungua.

The prosecution said last year Edema went to work at Ayikuma and befriended the complainant and the family.

It said, however, during September 10, this year, the accused, now convict, informed the complainant that his work had ended at Ayikuma, and that he would be returning to Nungua.

To the surprise of the complainant, the prosecution said the complainant in the evening of September 10, this year, realised that the victim was no where to be found after Edema had left.

It said the complainant went round in search of the victim but to no avail.

The prosecution said the complainant, therefore, reported the matter to the Police at Ayikuma on September 11, 2022.

It said the complainant then posted the pictures of the victim on the status of his phone and other social media platforms.

Afterwards, the prosecution said the complainant was informed by his brothers at Nungua that, they had seen a girl who resembled the victim in the company of Edema.

The prosecution told the court that the complainant asked his brothers to snap pictures of the accused and the victim and send same to him (the complainant).

When the pictures of the victim and Edema were sent to the complainant, he identified the victim.

The prosecution said the complainant went to the Nungua Police Station with an Extract of Occurrence from Ayikuma Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit for assistance.

It said Edema was nabbed by the Police and the complainant was issued with a medical report to send the victim to the hospital for examination.

A full medical report on the victim was submitted to the Police.

  • Canadian Murder Case: Police pray for time to build duplicate docket

The Police say some documents needed to build a duplicate docket in the murdered Canadian case are not ready.

According to Chief Inspector Jacob Nyarko, the Police were yet to receive the full autopsy report on murdered Frank Kofi Osei, the Ghanaian domiciled in Canada.

He, therefore, prayed the Adenta District Court to give the prosecution some time to get all the necessary documents and reports to build the duplicate docket and forward same to the Office of the Attorney General for advice.

The court adjourned the matter to November 11.

Safina Mohammed Adizatu, a student, and Michael Fiifi Ampofo Arku, the two accused persons, are in lawful custody over the murder of Osei at Ashalley Botwe School Junction, in Accra.

Osei, a Ghanaian domiciled in Canada, was in the country for a vacation when he was allegedly murdered last month.

Safina, also known as Safina Diamond on social media, and Arku, are said to have stabbed Osei several times on his chin, jaw, back and strangled him.

Charged with conspiracy and murder, the two accused in the company of their respective lawyers, had their pleas reserved.

Narrating the facts, the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Jacob Nyarko, said Safina was a 23-year-old Level 100 student of the University of Ghana, and Arku, a Technical Officer of the Crop Research Institute, Kumasi.

The prosecution said Osei, now deceased, was a Ghanaian domiciled in Canada, who was in Ghana on vacation.

It said on July 24, this year, Osei visited Safina, his fiancé, who resided at Ashalley Botwe School Junction, Accra, and decided to pass the night there.

According to the prosecution, the accused later allegedly dragged the deceased from the first floor of the storey building through the staircase and dumped him at the gate of the house near where the deceased had parked his Toyota Tundra and washed the blood stains off the staircase.

The prosecution said Safina called a police officer and said her boyfriend visited her, and had died in her room.

The court heard that the police called members of the Police Patrol Team, which rushed to the scene and found the body of Osei lying at the gate of Safina’s house, but (she) Safina and Arku were nowhere to be found.

The prosecution said the police traced Safina to Ashalley Botwe School Junction and nabbed her.

It said Arku after allegedly committing the act, absconded to Kumasi, adding that efforts were underway to apprehend other accomplices on the run.

  • NYC man arrested for fatally stabbing individual who didn’t say ‘Thank You’

A New York City man has been arrested after allegedly fatally stabbing a man who confronted him for not saying “thank you.”

NBC News reports the incident took place on Sept. 20 around 11:30 p.m. Joan Nunez, 37, opened the door of Tobacco Road Corp near President Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn for Edwin Pedroza, 42.

“It was just about not saying ‘thank you’ for opening the door for him,” employee Kharef Alsaidi told WABC. Alsaidi explained that Nunez opened the door for Pedroza, who failed to thank him for his nice gesture.

“Why don’t you say, ‘Thank you for opening the door’?” Alsaidi claims Nunez said, to which Pedroza responded, “I didn’t tell you to open the door for me.”

A verbal dispute erupted into a physical altercation, as both men fought off one another. Alsaidi said Nunez taunted Pedroza, saying, “Stab me if you can do it.”

From there, Pedroza withdrew a knife and stabbed Nunez in the abdomen and neck. “The victim started screaming, ‘He stabbed me, he stabbed me,’” Alsaidi said.

After Nunez stumbled back into the store, where he reportedly was “bleeding all over the floor,” the victim was subsequently rushed to New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Pedroza biked away from the crime scene, before he was arrested Friday morning in Brooklyn and charged with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

  • Three persons remanded for conspiracy to commit crime

Three persons have been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court for conspiring to commit crime and causing unlawful damage.

Mr Amankwah Dotse, aged 38, Mr Emmanuel Kpobi, aged 50, and Mr Raphael Agboli, all Land guards, were jointly charged with conspiracy to commit crime and causing unlawful damage.

Again, Mr Agboli, was charged with two counts of threat of death.

They pleaded not guilty to all the offences levelled against them.

Mr Yaw Dankwah, counsel for the accused persons, prayed for their bail, saying that they were not a threat to society and not a ‘fright risk.’

He said his clients had a fixed place of abode, as well as people of substance to stand as sureties.

Prosecution opposed the bail on the grounds that the accused persons would interfere with police investigation if granted bail.

The prosecution said the investigator needed ample time to do an investigation on the land.

He said there was the need to conduct a forensic investigation on a suspected Indian hemp found on one of the accused persons.

The Court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah remanded the accused persons into police custody to reappear on October 24, 2022.

Police Chief Inspector Samuel Ahibor, prosecuting, told the Court that complainant, Mr Jonathan Kwabena Ofori, was a Businessman and resided at Ofankor-Accra whilst the accused persons were residents of Kpobikope-Mayera.

The prosecution said suspects Mensah Dogbe and Godson Atakorah were at large.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said in 2004, the complainant acquired 20 plots of land at Mayera from Nana Ansah Henry and Dr Kumah for building purposes.

The prosecution said the complainant walled the land and put up a two-bedroom house on it for his caretakers, Erica Blankson and Emmanuel Owusu Danso, witnesses in the case.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said on August 20, 2022, the accused persons went and broke a portion of the fenced wall and sold part of the complainant’s land to one Michael Sackey.

The prosecution said the matter was reported to the Police and the accused persons were arrested.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said during investigations, the accused persons were warned by the Regional Police Command not to go to the land again.

The prosecution said on October 12, 2022, the accused persons went back to the land, pulled a pump action gun on the caretakers, and threatened to kill them.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said the Anti-Land Guard Team from Accra Regional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene and arrested the accused persons.

The prosecution said a search conducted in Mr Dotse’s bag revealed one wrap of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said investigations were still ongoing to apprehend suspects at large to assist police investigations.

  • Cop who shot 17-year-old in McDonald’s parking lot charged, teen still on life support

A Texas cop who was previously reported to have been fired after shooting a teen in a McDonald’s parking lot has now been charged.

Per a report from the Associated Press, 25-year-old James Brennand was still in custody as of Wednesday morning after turning himself in the prior evening. Brennand, who was fired last week, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault by public servant.

Erik Contu, 17, was eating inside his car when Brennand (as seen in subsequently shared body cam video) approached and told him to exit. At the time, Brennand claimed, he believed the vehicle was the same one that had “evaded him” the night before. As the car is seen being driven away, the officer fires into the vehicle, hitting Cantu.

When reached for comment by Complex on Wednesday, an attorney for Contu’s family confirmed that the teen remained on life support.

“We have no comment to the former officer’s arrest at this time,” the family said. Our main priority is Erik’s recovery. Erik is still on life support and is non-responsive but his oxygen levels are showing an improvement. We are being patient and optimistic that better health is coming. Please continue to keep Erik in your thoughts and prayers.”

The San Antonio Police Department confirmed Brennand’s arrest when reached for comment. A rep also confirmed that detectives with SAPD’s homicide unit had filed the two aforementioned aggravated assault charges following a criminal investigation.

In a previously released statement following the announcement that Brennand’s employment had been terminated, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the officer’s actions “were not in accordance” with the expectations of the department.

“Swift action was taken by the chief to terminate the officer and I am relieved that this decision is final,” Nirenberg said at the time.

  • The funny 1959 story of how a thief unsuccessfully wanted two slaps in order to be released

Even before his case was heard in court, a thief by the name of Daniel Laryea, tried a more unconventional attempt with the woman he had stolen from, hoping it could have been the perfect getaway for him: two slaps and I go scot-free.

This, however, was rejected and he had his day in court, getting twelve months in jail imprisonment from a magistrate of an Accra court in April 1959.

According to the Wednesday, April 1, 1959, edition of the Ghana Times newspaper in GhanaWeb’s possession, with the title, “’Mad’ thief asked for two slaps,” it details the rather intriguing court case of how Daniel Laryea wanted to get easily for his crime.

The man, an unemployed resident of Accra, was in court for stealing seven yards of a white drill from a market woman at the Makola No. 1 market, Madam Florence Quaye.

According to the report, Laryea made more than one attempt at getting off the hook even before the case was heard in court.

“Madam Florence Quaye, whose white drill was stolen, told the court that later after Daniel Laryea was asserted, he went to ask her privately to see the police to dismiss the case. Thomas Kwesi Hammond, who arrested the accused at the market told the court that Laryea pleaded to be freed.

“’He asked me to give him two slaps and set him free.’ Of course, the police did not slap him, he took Laryea to the station and charged him with the offence,” portions of the newspaper report stated.

The report added that on the day of the judgment, the thief acted very absentminded and stubbornly, refusing to answer questions asked him.

It was when the Magistrate, E. A. Bannerman, interjected that Daniel Laryea left perhaps, his last dose of theatrics, although it wasn’t enough to save him.

“Then the Senior Magistrate, who must have been a spectator to many of such tricks, told Laryea in a cool advising voice: ‘I have seen this several times, have you anything to tell me?’

“Then Laryea, struggling with the police in the dock, tried the last trick: ‘Your Worship, I am hungry, I can’t do anything,” it added.

The Ghana Times report concluded by providing a criminal history of the thief.

“According to his record, Laryea had six previous convictions of stealing,” it concluded.

  • Police Service launches enhanced visibility policing strategy

The Ghana Police Service has launched a community-based policing strategy that will foster collaboration between personnel of the service and local authorities to enforce law, order and security in metropolises, municipalities and districts across the country.

Such collaboration will also enable the public to identify, prioritise and address pertinent issues of crime in their various communities.

Dubbed: “Enhanced visibility and community policing strategy”, the plan will build on past community policing experiences to enhance police operations.

The police will also intensify day and night patrols within small defined areas in various police districts and establish good relations, rapport and trust with residents of those areas.

Also, district police commanders, who will be the main drivers of the strategy, will be required to develop security and crime prevention plans with stakeholders in their respective jurisdictions.

    Visibility

The Director-General of the National Patrol Department of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Paul Manly Awini, who launched the strategy document in Accra yesterday, said the plan would not only increase police visibility in communities but also ensure that personnel worked more in collaboration with opinion leaders and state agencies to sustain law and order in those areas.

He said over the past decade, the community policing concept had made a significant contribution to the fight against crime in the country, hence the need to further enrich the concept and make it more effective.

“It has become necessary to increase police visibility in zones where the fear of crime still exists and where crime and anti-social behaviour affect the daily lives of members of the public,” COP Awini said.

The strategy, he said, integrated key elements of a community crime fighting and removal of fear of crime initiative, adding: “The launch of this strategy comes at a time when the Police Administration is making efforts to transform the law enforcement agency and make communities safer for the people.”

It would also enhance crime prevention campaigns, in partnership with neighbourhood watch committees, residents associations, community protection assistants and other stakeholders, he said.

COP Awini further said strategies developed by stakeholders at MMDAs would become their road map, an important element of local police accountability.

    Commendation

The D-G commended consultants and the technical working group for their efforts at producing the final document for the implementation of the strategy.

He also expressed gratitude to the German Development Agency (GIZ) for providing support and expertise for the Police Service for the development of the strategy.

COP Awini urged the public to support the police in making the strategy effective, saying: “Security is a shared responsibility between the police and members of the public.”

  • R. Kelly trial: Witness testifies she was sexually abused by the singer

A woman at the heart of R. Kelly’s second federal trial has testified that the R&B singer had sex with her “hundreds” of times before she turned 18.

The 37-year-old woman, known as “Jane”, said that improper contact with Kelly began when she was just 13.

The singer is on trial in Chicago for child pornography, obstruction of justice and other charges.

His lawyers have insisted he is not “a monster” and deserves a fair trial.

Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is facing 13 criminal charges including creating and receiving child pornography, obstruction of justice and enticing minors into sexual activity.

He is already serving a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of sex trafficking and racketing in a separate trial held in New York last year.

The current case rests in large part on the testimony of “Jane”, one of his accusers. Prosecutors allege that Kelly made at least four videos with Jane, parts of which will be shown to jurors.

In court on Thursday, Jane testified that Kelly had sex with her “uncountable times” starting when she was 15. Jurors were shown photographs of her in high school to illustrate how young she appeared at the time.

Over the course of her two-hour testimony, Jane described a number of sexual encounters that Kelly allegedly recorded. In one video, Kelly appeared to hand her money.

When asked why, Jane alleged that Kelly believed that “if it was released for some reason, he [Kelly] would say I was a prostitute”, according to the Chicago Tribune.

One of the videos was also at the centre of a separate 2008 trial in which Kelly and Jane both denied it was them in the tape. Kelly was ultimately acquitted on all charges.

Asked about that earlier denial on Thursday, she told jurors that she ” was afraid something bad would happen to Robert”, according to the Associated Press.

    “I was protecting him.”

Some analysts have characterised the current trial as a do-over of the 2008 trial, in which the singer faced 14 charges of child pornography.

Two of Kelly’s former employees are also facing charges in this trial. Derrel McDavid, his former business manager, is accused of helping Kelly fix the 2008 trial, and Milton Brown is charged with receiving child pornography.

Both men have pleaded not guilty.

During opening statements earlier this week, attorneys for Kelly and the two former employees dismissed the charges and called on jurors to give Kelly a fair trial despite widespread public attention, and decried a “mob-justice” climate surrounding the case.

Additionally, they alleged that some of those expected to testify were “criminals” who have previously “extorted him” and secured immunity deals from prosecutors.

  • Collaboration between public and police critical to crime prevention – Yaw Akwada

There is a need for close collaboration between the police and the public for effective crime prevention.

This collaboration should be typified by early police response to distress calls by the citizenry, which is critical to crime prevention.

Mr. Nana Yaw Akwada, Executive Director, Bureau of Public Safety, told the Ghana News Agency that while crime threatened every society, its prevention and control was best achieved when in addition to other measures, the police worked closely with the citizenry.

Mr. Akwada who spoke on the recent killing of a policeman in Accra, as he escorted a bullion van, encouraged the police not to be disheartened by criticism from certain sectors of the public, even if they might sound harsh.

“All over the world, the police have achieved some of their greatest reforms after they have been heavily criticised following certain unfortunate incidents of crime,” he said.

Mr. Akwada observed that certain criminal acts evoked intense feelings of disdain in people, and often led to heavy criticism of the police by certain portions of the public.

He said those criticisms simply had to be looked at objectively and utilised towards improving the efficiency of the police.

Mr. Akwada also urged the public to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings.

He said it was important to call the police whenever criminal activity was suspected, because that could prevent serious crimes from taking place.

Mr. Akwada said it was very important to realise that effective police work could best be achieved when there was maximum cooperation between the police and the public.

He also urged the security agencies to make maximum use of security gadgets such as CCTV and body cameras,

Unidentified armed men attacked a bullion van at about 1130 hours on Monday, June 14 within James Town in Accra, leading to the death of a policeman who was on board and a lady.

  • Fridge repairer jailed 5 years for blackmail; demanded sex from female teacher

A 27-year-old fridge repairer apprentice has been jailed five years for blackmailing a female teacher with threats of posting her nude photos and videos on social media.

The Ho High Court, presided over by Justice Eric Baah, found Cephas Agbebianu Anani guilty on three counts of defrauding by false pretence, extortion and publication of obscene material, and consequently sentenced him to five years imprisonment on counts one and two, and three years for the last count.

The sentences are, however, to run concurrently.

Delivering his judgement last Friday after a full-year trial, the judge noted that Anani had violated the social media policy, indicating that he deserved a 25-year jail term for the crime, but that he had dealt leniently with him because he was a first-time offender.
His sentence, Justice Baah said, was to serve as a deterrent to others.

    Online conversation

Anani, who resided at Gbi-Kledjo, near Hohoe in the Volta Region, was reported to have had online conversations with the victim on Facebook between December 2018 and January 2019 using the username Gwada Thoni and a photograph of Prince William of the United Kingdom as his display picture to misrepresent himself to the victim.

The Prosecutor, Chief Superintendent Ayamga Ayakubu Akoglo, said Anani obtained the WhatsApp number of the complainant and managed to convince her to send her nude pictures and videos to the Gwada Thoni Facebook account.

The victim reportedly obliged and forwarded the requested nude materials to the fake account of the accused via messenger.

    The blackmail

Upon receiving the materials, Anani started blackmailing her through his WhatsApp number 0554948428 that he knew her at Gbi-Kledjo, and that she should pay GH¢2,000 or must allow him to have sex with her 10 times.

The convict then threatened her that if she failed to send the said amount or refused him sex, he would publish her nude pictures and videos on social media for people to watch to prove that he was serious.

The victim, shocked about the threat, told Cephas that she did not have much money to give him and further begged him not to publish the nude materials.

Anani, however, instructed the lady to send GH¢100 to him to book a hotel room where he could have sex with her.

Chief Superintendent Ayamga explained to the court that out of fear, the victim sent the money to him to book the hotel room at Afegame Hotel as demanded, but unknown to him, the complainant had reported the matter to the police at Hohoe.

Following the complaint, the Hohoe police, on surveillance, went to the hotel on the said meeting date but the convict, who appeared at the hotel as arranged, managed to escape arrest.

The complainant identified him as someone she knew at Kledjo, which led to his arrest at his hideout at Kpoeta.

In court, Anani denied all the charges and upon a plea by his counsel, Emile Atsu Agbakpe, he was granted bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties.

The two, Okafor Wale, a 47-year-old Nigerian and Yao Dieu-Donne Evoda, a 22-year-old Togolese, were each convicted on charges of registering for Ghana Voter ID card when not qualified and a prohibited immigrant.

Evoda was slapped with an additional charge of abetment of crime.

He said the Togolese first got Ghanaian neighbours to vouch for him as an eligible applicant to acquire the card and he later got one person in addition to himself and convinced the Nigerian he lived in the same house to also register.

Mr Bempah said the Nigerian after acquiring the card tried to cross over the border through an unapproved route at ‘Beat 11’ in Aflao and was arrested by an Immigration officer, who he tried to beg using the Ghana Voter card as his trump card.

The Police Commander said upon interrogation, he confessed his nationality and mentioned his Togolese accomplice.

They were arrested and subsequently handed over to the Police for action.

“We sent them to court on July 13. The second appearance was on July 27 on which day the court took their plea and deferred pronouncement on the case to July 30. They got two years each on all the counts which run concurrently,” he said

  • Five Kingsmen charged with contempt in Western Region

The Sekondi High Court Two has pronounced a GHC12,500 fine on five Kingsmen belonging to the Mpintsin Royal family for interfering in the chieftancy affairs of the Effia Brempong Yaw Ntwea Royal Family in the Effia-Kwesiminstim Municipal Assembly of the Western Region.

The five, who are not members of the Brempong Yaw Ntwea Royal Family of Effia would in default serve a three-month jail term as announced by Her Ladyship Hannah Taylor who presided over the case of contempt involving Ebusua Kyeame Ekow Tawiah, Maame Yaaba, Joseph Nyantakyi, John Arhin and Mena Nsia.

They will in default of the payment of the fine serve a three months jail term.

The five, according to the Court left their jurisdiction and rather wished to install one John Arhin, a tutor at the Ahantaman Secondary School as Chief over the Brempong Yaw Ntwea Royal Family where their kinship had no bearing contradicting an earlier judgement by the Western Regional House of Chiefs ruling in 1974.

The Judicial Committee of the Western Regional House of Chiefs ruling held at Sekondi on Thursday, 28th April in 1974 declared the two families as separate entities who cannot interfere in the affairs of each Royal family.

The Judicial Committee of the Western Regional House of Chiefs who sat on the matter in 1974 included Awulae Kwesi Amakyi III as chairman, Nana Hima Dekyi XIII and Nana Kofi Adianka IV as members with A. P. Pepra ESQ as counsel.

In 1974 a judgement from the Western Regional House of Chiefs specified that the five persons now convicted with contempt were not close to the Effia Royal Family and therefore cannot install a chief.

The Judicial Committee, also ruled that the two separate Stools at Effia and Mpintsin could not succeed each other in any way thence, any attempt by a member of Mpintsin branch to occupy the stool is improper, and vice versa.

Again the Western Regional House of Chiefs Judicial Committee specify that the petitioner, Opanyin Kweku Walabai, whose descendents are the five, are from the Mpintsin branch and definitely not part of the Brempong Yaw Ntwaa Family resident at Effia.

Moreover, Nana Brempong Yaw III and Nana Brempong Yaw IV are properly of the Effia branch of the Brempong Yaw Ntwaa Family and have therefore been properly enstooled on the Effia Stool.

On the contrary, the five defied the House of chiefs ruling and somewhere in October 2017 tried installing one John Arhin as a chief whiles Nana Brempong Yaw IV was still the occupant of the stool at Effia and of the Brempong Yaw Ntwaa Family.

The five, from the Mpintin Royal Family, were therefore convicted for contempt despite plea by their counsel for the court to have mercy on them since they had regretted their action.

However, Her Ladyship Hannah Taylor ignored the counsel’s plea and finally pronounced a custodial sentence to the tune of GHC2,500.00 on a person or in default serve three months in prison.
