NDC bows out of Ejisu by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opted out of the Ejisu by-election set for April 30, following the demise of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, John Ampontuah Kumah.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, stated that the party is redirecting its efforts toward preparing for the main parliamentary elections in December.

Last Saturday, April 13, delegates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency elected Kwabena Boateng, the second Vice Chairman of the party in the constituency, as their candidate for the by-election.

In a media briefing, Mr. Kwetey reiterated the NDC’s decision to abstain from the by-election, highlighting their dedication to groundwork for the December polls.

“NDC will officially not be taking part in the Ejisu by-election. We have already set into motion processes leading to December 7, just a few months away. We want to continue those processes and ensure that come December 7, we are prepared to combat in all the constituencies and Ejisu will be one of them. So for this particular by-election, NDC will not be part of it. We are very confident about the processes we have in place. We just want to make sure we have the time to implement them fully. And between now and December 7, we will be in the position to make sure we are deploying everything that we have done so that really will be the way we want to go” he explained.

Private legal practitioner Kwabena Boateng emerged victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries held in the Ejisu constituency of the Ashanti Region on April 13.

Mr Boateng defeated eight other candidates, including former Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss Kwesi Nyantakyi, to become the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The other candidates in the primaries were Dr. Evans Duah, Klinsman Karikari Mensah, Helena Mensah, Jacqueline Abena Pokua Amoah-Boaitey, Portia Baffoe Abronye, Aaron Prince Duah, and Yaa Gyamera Aboagye.

Initially, it was thought that the remaining votes would be split between Dr. Evans Duah and Kwabena Boateng, potentially reducing Boateng’s chances of winning.

However, Dr. Evans Duah received only 63 votes, allowing Boateng to secure victory over him and the other contenders.

In his address to the media, Boateng thanked the delegates for their trust and support, promising to be a dedicated representative for the people of Ejisu if elected as MP.

He dedicated his victory to the late MP, Dr. John Kumah, and pledged to continue his legacy.

The by-election in Ejisu was necessitated by the passing of Dr. John Kumah, who was also a Deputy Finance Minister, on Thursday, March 7, at the age of 45. The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for Tuesday, April 30.

Former GFA president and candidate of the Ejisu NPP primaries, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has broken his silence after being discharged from Asokore Mampong Hospital, where he received treatment since Friday night.

It was earlier reported that Nyantakyi fell ill for failing to eat anything on Friday due to campaign activities he was involved in.

Addressing NPP Ejisu voters at the voting center on Saturday, Nyantakyi, in a video on social media, noted that he began to feel dizzy and had to be rushed to the hospital.

He further recounted that “at the hospital, they placed drips on me”.

“I thank God I am still alive,” a sobbing Nyantakyi said.

He arrived at the voting centre to cast his ballot in a race featuring nine aspirants.

As polling began, Nyantakyi was still in the hospital under observation. Upon arrival, Nyantakyi appeared weak and was assisted by a member of his team to walk.

  • VIDEO: Abronye accuses NPP Ejisu Chair of conniving with EC to rig primary

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, has voiced serious concerns about the ongoing voting process in the Ejisu Constituency, where his wife is a contestant in the party’s parliamentary primary.

Abronye alleges collusion between the Electoral Commission and the constituency chairman, who is also part of the election committee, to unfairly influence support in favor of a specific candidate among the nine contenders.

In a video sighted on social media, Abronye said, “When it comes to elections, nobody knows elections like me. Every election starts with zonal areas. When you start with one electoral area, you must finish and go to the next electoral area. But they tilted the thing.

“This arrangement is bad, the constituency chairman who is part of the election committee, is following a particular candidate, he is the one who did the list with the EC. He has connived with the EC.”

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently conducting a parliamentary primary to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency. This by-election was prompted by the unfortunate passing of the Member of Parliament for the constituency, John Kumah, on March 7, 2024.

All nine aspirants for the internal poll on April 13, 2024, were cleared by the vetting committee on April 6. They had submitted their forms to contest the NPP parliamentary primary for the Ejisu constituency when nominations opened on April 2, 2024.

Former Ejisu MP ‘abandons’ NPP to contest by-election as an Independent Candidate

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, has announced his decision to contest the upcoming by-election as an independent candidate.

His decision comes as a result of what he perceives as the National Leadership of the NPP’s reluctance to address crucial concerns regarding the existing delegates’ album, which he believes undermines party integrity and fairness.

In a statement issued by his campaign aide, Nana Osei Bonsu, on Friday, April 12, 2024, it was revealed that Mr. Owusu Aduomi’s decision was largely influenced by the irregularities observed during the Ejisu polling station executive elections.

These irregularities, including the alleged arbitrary selection of individuals by the late MP of Ejisu, John Kumah, and the Regional Executives of the NPP, were deemed unacceptable in a democratic society.

“The genesis of this decision traces back to the tumultuous Ejisu polling station executive elections, marred by irregularities that would have been deemed unacceptable in any democratic society.

“Rather than adhering to the democratic process, the late MP of Ejisu, with the assistance of the Regional Executives of the NPP, arbitrarily handpicked individuals to fill key positions—a blatant disregard for the party’s constitution and its fundamental principles.

“Such actions have rightfully stirred vehement protests from conscientious party members and stakeholders across the nation. The issue has even found its way into the courts for adjudication, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for redress.

“Hon. Owusu-Aduomi’s decision to contest the by-election as an independent candidate underscores his unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring transparency and accountability within the party. By refusing to participate in an ostensibly flawed process, he sends a clear message that integrity and fairness must prevail, even at the expense of personal political aspirations.”

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, exudes confidence in his bid for the upcoming parliamentary by-election in the Ejisu Constituency, Ashanti Region.

Following the balloting for the New Patriotic Party’s primaries, Nyantakyi, speaking to the media, interprets his placement at number 7 on the ballot as a sign that he is the ideal candidate to represent Ejisu in parliament.

Drawing a parallel, Nyantakyi likens his ballot position to the renowned footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who famously wore the number 7 jersey for Manchester United and Real Madrid, suggesting his readiness to lead Ejisu with distinction.

“I had indicated to you all on the day I submitted my form that I was the Cristiano Ronaldo of Ejisu and God has perfected it,” he said.

He also maintained that the number 7 biblically represents hard work, dedication, and excellence which are all virtues he would be bringing on board to help the people of Ejisu.

“The number seven jersey number I took represents my brilliance, eloquence, hard work, and excellence in football as we transfer into politics. God spent six days to create the world and rested on the 7th day. And so, it means that my coming signifies that the people of Ejisu will take a rest whilst I assume or continue the hard work for them,” he said.

Kwesi Nyantakyi reiterated, “In philosophy, seven also means wisdom, truthfulness, hard work, intellectuality, etc. And so, if you are not an intelligent man, or a hard-working or a wise person, you are not associated with seven”.

Honour John Kumah, leave Ejisu seat for NPP -Chairman Wontumi tells NDC

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued a heartfelt plea to all political factions, notably the primary opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to abstain from participating in the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency.

Chairman Wontumi emphasized the paramount importance of paying homage to the late MP of the constituency, John Kumah. He stressed that Kumah’s profound legacy and dedicated service to both the Ejisu Constituency and the nation merit profound recognition and respect.

In light of this, Chairman Wontumi called upon all constituents to unite in solidarity, striving to uphold the late MP’s honor by ensuring that the by-election seat remains uncontested by competing political entities.

“All the constituents of Ejisu should help us send a signal to the NDC that we are serious. If it is possible, they (NDC) shouldn’t contest. But if they want to contest, we will turn our seriousness into a vote for the NPP for them to see that we love John by showing love to his replacement,” Chairman Wontumi asserted.

The NPP stalwart acknowledged the party’s confidence in securing victory in the upcoming by-election. However, he urged other political parties to carefully weigh the broader implications of their participation in the electoral process.

“We are left with only 8 months to the general elections. Even though the NPP will win, if you want to contest, we will do our campaign to win massively.
“It will be nice for both sides to see that we are using this by-election in honour of John Kumah,” he added.

Ejisu seat: Let me be Ronaldo to replace Messi – Nyantakyi ‘brags’ about his competency

In a discussion about finding a replacement for the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu, John Kumah, former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, drew a parallel between football and politics.

Nyantakyi compared Kumah’s significance in politics to that of soccer icon Lionel Messi, highlighting the need for a candidate of similar calibre to fill his shoes.

He stressed the importance of selecting a suitable replacement for Kumah who possesses the same high level of skill and capability.

“If Lionel Messi plays a match and gets injured, will you take anybody at all to go and replace him? You need Cristiano Ronaldo, Mbappe, or Haaland, you understand?” Nyantakyi said this in an interview with GhOne TV on April 4, 2024.

The former GFA president, who claims to have been approached several times by residents of Ejisu since 2012, expressed his willingness to vie for the MP position.

Describing himself as the “Ronaldo” equivalent, he suggests that he has the requisite skills to step into the void left by Kumah’s passing.

“I am Ronaldo and I think that I should be brought in to replace Lionel Messi,” he added.

The NPP has announced that the nominees will undergo vetting on April 6, 2024.

Following this, more than 1000 party delegates are anticipated to take part in the primary on April 13, 2024, to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not yet made a decision regarding its involvement in the upcoming Ejisu by-election in the Ashanti region, prompted by the passing of Member of Parliament Dr. John Kumah.

Although the party asserts that its candidate is prepared for the parliamentary election scheduled for December 7, it is hesitant about participating in the by-election, which is just a few months prior to the general elections, citing concerns such as cost and other factors.

“As I speak to you now, the party is yet to firm up on our decision whether to contest or not to contest. I’m sure that in the coming days we will officially make a statement to declare our position on whether we are going in or not. We are considering other factors as well.

In these elections, there are costs, and there is disruption in some of your calendar activities moving into the main election. The big catch for us is the December 7 election,” the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, said in an interview with Starr News.

He added: “So were are looking, if time permits, the resources permit and, if the indications permit that we go in full force and make a case out of the elections, and possibly win the election for the first time, our research team will report back to us in the coming week and once we have that research document from them and we are able to analyse it, then we will be guided by the data on why we would want to participate.”

Anti-corruption advocate Vitus Azeem has voiced criticism against Kwasi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), for his intention to contest the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in the Ejisu constituency of the Ashanti region.

Azeem has raised moral concerns regarding Nyantakyi‘s candidacy, highlighting the lingering allegations of corruption that could tarnish his suitability for political office. While there are no legal barriers to Nyantakyi’s candidacy, Azeem emphasized the importance of considering the ethical implications of his bid.

During an interview on Citi News on April 3, 2024, Azeem advised Nyantakyi to carefully weigh the potential consequences before proceeding with his political aspirations.

“Whether he has been prosecuted or not, it is a dent on him and it cannot easily be wiped away. It may not be possible to legally bar him from contesting but as somebody interested in parliament, he should even consider contesting for an election.

“It is not even the fact that you come out to admit that you paid money but the mere fact that at the very beginning, he was the key player in the Anas investigations and even though he has not been investigated and prosecuted, he too has not been able to exonerate himself and has now implicated himself by admitting that he paid money to Anas to stop him from airing the exposé because it contained information that will further implicate him. The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced its readiness to conduct a by-election for the Ejisu Constituency in the Ashanti region following the passing of Member of Parliament, John Kumah.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the Director for Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, stated that the Commission is prepared to organize the by-election as required.

“Article 112 of the Constitution says that when a vacancy occurs the Clerk of Parliament will inform the Electoral Commission seven days after the incident. When we are informed and it is an ordinary incident the Commission has thirty days but if it is a result of death we have sixty days to conduct a by-election.

“If the vacancy occurs less than three months to a General Election there will not be an election, so as far as the Commission is concerned and in our budget we always prepare for by-elections. So as and when we are informed officially we will kick start the process and we are ever ready,” Mr. Quaicoe explained.

Dr. John Kumah, who had been battling an undisclosed illness and sought treatment in Germany, returned to Ghana to ensure the passage of critical revenue measures in the 2024 budget after the minority threatened rejection.

John Kumah used the military to grab lands from Ejisu residents – Computer Man alleges

Prophet Nana Akwesi Amponsah, also known as Computer Man, founder and head pastor of Hope Generation Ministries International, has alleged that the land housing the Disciple of Christ Ministries Worldwide, founded by the late John Kumah’s wife, Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, was acquired illegally.

According to him, the piece of land was forcefully taken from mechanics for the benefit of the deceased MP’s wife. He claimed that over 40 military officers were brought in, allegedly on the orders of the late John Kumah, to intimidate the workers.

“Where John Kumah’s wife’s church is located, it used to be a working space for mechanics. We were one day and all of a sudden, these mechanics were running. Some were injured. Some had been beaten. Over 40 soldiers were brought in.”

“The boys came to inform me so I called John Kumah. But when I called him, he told me he was busy,” he said.

Computer Man noted that he called President Akufo-Addo to have a word with the deceased MP to restore calm.

“So I called Peace FM to intervene otherwise things would escalate I also called the president to speak to John Kumah because even if there are issues with land documentation, you cannot use brute force to intimidate,” he said.

Computer Man known to be a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) also alleged that he fell victim to the actions of John Kumah.

According to Prophet Nana Akwesi Amponsah, John Kumah reportedly sent some military officers to confiscate his own land.

“I was heading to Kumasi, I was at Konongo then my security personnel called me. He said some 19 soldiers are on your land. They have placed sand and blocks and are building. I asked why, he said John Kumah and his wife have bought the land. My own land that I have had for close to 20 years. Who doesn’t know it is mine.”

He recounted, “I called John Kumah and he said it wasn’t him. We are all in the NPP so this can’t happen.. So I asked the security man to go and check it out. He told me John Kumah’s wife was on the land.”

“I spoke to her and she said okay. I thought that would be it, the following morning, they kept working. I called the Police, Kofi, the president’s nephew and told him he should tell him this is what John Kumah has done to his boy, Kwasi Amponsah.”

According to him, President Akufo-Addo reached out and sent a team that found out that John Kumah was behind the initiative.

“The President got in touch with John Kumah and he denied the claims. The president sent some people and they found out that it was John Kumah and he told him that he doesn’t like that.”

Prior to John Kumah’s death, an elderly woman, believed to be in her late 50s, screaming and labelling the late deputy minister a thief.

She alleged that John Kumah acquired her land under the pretence of a government project, but instead, he is allegedly using it for his private business.

The visibly upset woman passionately demanded the return of her land, expressing her outrage and determination to expose the deputy minister’s actions.

But John Kumah refuted this claim.

In a statement shared by The Chronicles, he wrote, “I would like to refute these baseless claims and set the record straight, regarding the true events surrounding the acquisition and use of the said land.

As many of you are aware, during my campaign to become the MP for Ejisu, I made a solemn promise to the people that I would establish an asphaltic plant to address the road deficiencies in the constituency.

To realize this vision and create job opportunities, the ‘EJISU Club 100’ was established to collaborate with Sogood Engineering and Construction Company to undertake this project, among several others.

In the pursuit of fulfilling this commitment, I approached my family chief, Nana Kofi Agyei, for a piece of land for the construction of the asphaltic plant.

Nana Kofi Agyei gifted me the land in the presence of other family members, after the Aseda custom were done.

The intention behind this gift was never for personal gain, but to help uplift the community and improve the lives of its residents through job creation and enhanced infrastructure.

The progress of the asphaltic plant construction, which has reached an impressive 90% completion stage, stands as a testament to my unwavering dedication to fulfilling the promises made to my constituents during my campaign.

Regrettably, it has come to my attention that a few members of the family are expressing discontent over the gift of the land by the family chief.  A land they have no claim to.

I acknowledge their right to have differing opinion but strongly oppose their unwarranted insults and attacks directed at me and wrongly claiming that I have forcefully taken over their lands.

In a response to the claims, I have already taken the necessary steps by reporting the matter to the Ejisu Police Service for the arrest of the individuals involved.

I have also notified the family chief about the very distasteful actions of the individuals involved, for the necessary customary actions to be taken against them.

As is evident in the video, there are no private houses built on the land but rather heavy duty vehicles and quarters for workers working on the asphaltic plant, as well as equipment for the asphaltic plants among several others.

It is very disheartening that in my quest to address a major challenge in the constituency, I have rather been attacked and vilified for an act I have not taken.

I would like to urge the public to disregard the content of the video and I admonish the media against further spreading its defamatory content or face legal action.”

We want to assure parents that we are also parents, so we make sure they get a better place to sleep before we end the term.”

“The situation is not proper. We are preparing a place for them now. This morning, we met the student population with the support of the head mistress. We comforted them and told them that we are with them. We have told them to support us to get them a place to lodge their heads. The campaign forms part of the ministry’s border counter-terrorism strategy aimed at sensitising the public to terrorism threats and encouraging the citizenry to collaborate with state security agencies to reduce the threat of terrorism in the country.

One of the community leaders, Mohammed Ali said they reported them to the police because they believe they pose a security threat and want the security agencies to probe their operations.

“For several times, I entered and asked them, what are they doing. They said that they were learning. In the evening, you see them making phone calls, different phone calls, everybody making a phone call. Maybe they are trying to convince someone or I don’t know, so that is what they have been doing around here,” Ali said.

The police is yet to comment on the issue.
