  • Vigilantism, electoral violence can plague 2020 polls – Catholic Bishops warn

Political party vigilantism and electoral violence described by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference as the “twin evils” threatens to plague the 2020 elections in December despite the enactment of legislation and the signing of inter-party code of conduct and road map to peace ahead of the polls, the Bishops have warned.

To ensure free, fair and transparent elections, the Bishops are pleading with Ghanaians to strive against vigilantism and violence.

It is recalled that in the just ended voter registration exercise, there were recorded incidence of violence at some registration centres.

At Awutu Senya East constituency in the central region for example, the Member of Parliament Hawa Koomson fired a gun at a registration centre after a melee leading to the burning of motor bikes and disrupting the process.

At Banda Ahenkro in the Bono Region, a graduate teacher was killed during a confrontation at a registration centre.

Apart from these, pockets of violence were recorded across the country.

These occurred despite an agreement between the two leading political parties the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disband political vigilante groups.

Both parties are signatories to the Code of Conduct and Roadmap to ending political vigilantism developed by a technical committee following a series of dialogues organised by the National Peace Council.

It is on the back of this that the Catholic Bishops said vigilantism needs to be exorcised to ensure a violent free election.

In a pastoral letter titled: “Politics for nation building and social cohesion in Ghana”, the Bishops said: “These twin evils have again reared their ugly heads at recent elections and shockingly in the course of the voter registration exercise. If not duly exorcised from our body politic, these threaten to plague the 2020 elections, in spite of the enactment of legislations and the endorsement and signing of an inter-party code of conduct and road map to peace.”

  • National Election Task Force urged to constantly engage political parties ahead of 2020 polls

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on the National Election Security Task Force to constantly engage political parties ahead of the upcoming polls.

In its third report on the biometric voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC), CODEO said constantly engaging the stakeholders will bolster confidence in the December 7 elections.

“Towards the conduct of the general elections, CODEO calls on the National Election Security Task Force to constantly engage all key stakeholders including the political parties on security arrangements for the December polls to bolster stakeholder confidence and trust in election security,” the Coalition said in its six-point recommendation.

The Coalition also condemned acts of intimidation, harassment and use of violence at some polling station during the exercise.

“CODEO calls on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ghana Police Service working with the Attorney General (AG) to act expeditiously to complete all investigations including the violent incidents in Banda which resulted in the death of one young man, as well as the incident in Awutu Senya East in the Central Region and in Dormaa West in the Bono region. Persons found culpable in various criminal breaches of the law should be prosecuted and sanctioned in accordance with the laws of Ghana,” the Coalition said.

It said police must share updates of these investigations with the Ghanaian public to foster confidence in the security agencies and also server as a deterrent against future incidents of this nature. Failure to enforce the rule of law will erode confidence in the security agencies and the rule of law.

The nationwide voters registration exercise officially end on Thursday, August 6, 2020 followed by a mop-up on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9.

Although the Commission had a target of registering 15 million applicants, provisional figures indicate that the target has been exceeded and the figures would likely hit 16.5 million.

  • NDC to provide proper social protection for the aged – Otokunor

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress and a Deputy Campaign Manager of the NDC, has hinted that the next NDC government will accelerate efforts towards building a robust social safety net for the aged in order to prevent dreaded and shameful incidents such as the lynching of a 90-year-old lady accused of being a witch.

In an interview with Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie on Okay FM, Peter Otokunor hinted that the NDC is planning a comprehensive “social safety net” for the aged in our society if elected on December 7th, adding that ‘Witch Camp’ should be scrapped so that a carefully planed ‘homes for aged’ concept which could create jobs for lots of nurses across the country can be implemented to take care of our vulnerable mothers.

According to him, such comprehensive initiative will open up opportunities for massive job creation in the hospitality and allied health sector.

He said, “this will afford the thousands of qualified trained nurses who are still idling at home the opportunity to be employed to make a living for themselves and their families.”

  • Free healthcare will bring relief to Ghanaians – Otokunor

A Deputy General Secretary and a Deputy Campaign Manager of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, has said his party’s plan to implement a free healthcare policy if elected on December 7 will bring huge relief to the people of Ghana.

His comment is in the wake of the collapse of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by what he describes as the incompetent Akufo-Addo government.

According to him, this promise is the clearest indication of NDC’s desire to build a healthy and a wealthy nation.

Speaking at the inauguration of Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in Accra on Mondey, July 27, His Excellency former President Mahama had announced that in line with his party’s social democratic credentials, he is seeking to introduce and begin the “implementation of a Free Primary Health Care Plan”.

Reacting to this announcement, Mr Peter Otokunor said, “A Country with unhealthy people can never see progress,” adding that “Every developed country is a healthy country. A sound mind lives in a sound body. So if you need sound minds to deliver economic development, health is a priority.”

According to him, it is this very philosophy that propelled the previous NDC government to pay special attention to the Health Sector.

“Look at the Rigde Hospital, the University of Ghana Medical Center, the Bank of Ghana Hospital, GA East Hospital, the Maritime Hospital, the Dodowa Hospital and many District Hospitals across the country.”

“The numerous hospitals Mahama built have become the corner stone today for Ghana in the fight against covid-19. From January 2021, we are going to continue to aggressively build more hospitals so that primary healthcare can reach every nook and cranny of our country,” he said.

He added: “We will build more CHPS Compounds than what we did in our previous administration and then make primary healthcare free. This is leadership. Not the clueless type that come to government and wait until when it is 5 months to election before promising to build 88 hospitals in one year.”

“Akufo Addo made a choice to priotize corruption and has done a impeccable job in that regard. He will be remembered in history for weakening, basterdising and collapsing state institutions. Today, the National Health Insurance Scheme has virtually collapsed. Mahama’s introduction of free healthcare will bring great relief to the masses,” he said.

Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error (with finite population correction) of plus or minus 3.482%. A representative sample of the Ghanaian population was achieved by weighting (matching) the data according to age and gender demographics of the 2010 population and housing census and the Ghana Living Standards Survey (GLSS 7).

Seven questions were asked in the first wave of the Ghana Election Poll and their corresponding results would be published within the next three weeks. The questions include:

    • Do you feel there is a possibility of vote-rigging in the 2020 election?
    • Who are you planning to vote for if the 2020 elections were held today?

The Ghana Election Poll is powered by GhanaWeb and the Africa Consumer Panel which is a partnership between the digital publisher Africa Business Communities and renowned market research firm MSI-ACI.

The online poll is conducted every month and the results are published at the beginning of every other month on GhanaWeb.com. It is devoid of spam as the respondents can take the survey only once. The MSI-ACI platform that hosts the survey records the device on which the respondent takes the poll and does not allow for a second attempt from the same device.

The Ghana Election Poll is different from the open-access poll which is running on GhanaWeb. The latter allows participants to self-select into participation and its results cannot be generalized because it is a representative of only the participants of the poll.

  • NPP youth urged to stand up against the lies of the opposition

Mr Henry Nana Boakye, National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has charged the youth in the Party to be very abreast with the performance of the government in order to be able to counter the lies of the opposition.

He said the NPP government in the last three and a half years, had worked hard to resuscitate the economy and initiated a number of social and development programmes which had helped create employment and improve the living conditions of the people across the country.

It was therefore important for the youth in the Party to lead the crusade to tell the people what the government had done within its first term in office, to counter the false claims and criticisms by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing a meeting of the youth wing of the Party in Kumasi, Nana Boakye said NDC was only good at falsifying facts in order to divert attention of Ghanaians from the good works of the NPP government.

He said, the opposition NDC marvelled at the tremendous work of the government within this short period, and was trying to go all out to say bad things about the government in order to discredit it in the eyes of the public to win back political power.

Nana Boakye said the youth who were the backbone of the Party should rise up and counter any attempt by the NDC to peddle lies to win power in the upcoming elections.

He said the meeting which was part of the “Youth must know series” of the youth wing of the Party, aimed at building the capacities of the youth to be able to stand on their feet to educate the people on the good works and the various social intervention programmes being implemented by the government.

Nana Boakye mentioned the implementation of the free senior high school programme, planting for food and jobs, NABCO, expansion of the scholarship scheme, massive employment in the areas of education, health, afforestation, among others, as some of the many achievements of the government.

The National Youth Organizer charged the youth to prepare well for the task ahead to retain the NPP in power to help continue with the good works to improve the living conditions of the people.

  • Fuel prices must go down immediately NDC demands

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately ensure that fuel prices at the pumps are reduced.

According to the party, the declining prices of crude oil on the international market, amongst other factors, should have led to a drastic reduction of fuel but the government has refused to do so.

According to the opposition, the call for reduction is to help commercial drivers as they have been compelled to reduce the number of passengers that board their vehicles in order to adhere to social distancing.

Speaking to the media in Accra today, July 13, 2020, National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, described the increase in fuel prices as unacceptable and demanded that prices be reduced immediately.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot end by urging government to reduce fuel prices, instead of the recent consistent increments at a time crude prices have plummeted on the world market. The need to reduce fuel prices comes at a time government has directed all commercial drivers to reduce the number of passengers they take in line with social distancing protocols. This has drastically reduced the incomes of transport owners who are still being asked to pay more for fuel. This is unacceptable, and prices must go down immediately.”

    Attendant increase in transport fares

Commercial transport operators over the weekend increased transport fares by 15%.

This was after the transport operators made a proposal for the government to allow them to revert to carrying their usual full seating capacity or for the fares to be adjusted upwards by 30%.

After considering both proposals, government subsequently approved a 15% increase.

  • It’s not EC’s job to share nose masks at registration centres – Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed has called on political figures and Ghanaians to stop worrying the Electoral Commission (EC) to give them nose masks at the registration centres.

The EC’s registration exercise began on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, and is aimed at compiling a new voters’ register for the upcoming general elections and all other national elections.

The ongoing exercise is taking place in over 33,000 polling stations across the country.

Some participants have expressed their displeasure with the EC’s inability to provide them with nose masks despite assuring Ghanaians that they will take all COVID-19 health protocols into account.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Atik Mohammed stated emphatically that sharing nose or face masks to attendees to the registration centres shouldn’t be the responsibility of the Electoral Commission.

“It’s not their job,” he stated and wondered how people even go to the registration centres unmasked when President Nana Akufo-Addo has ordered a mandatory wearing of masks by every citizen.

” . . the E.I states that you can’t leave your home without wearing the face or nose mask. So, by law, it is even criminal or it’s an offence to step out of your home without wearing the mask. So, how do you get to the registration centre in the first place?”

According to the NDC, the troops have been sent there to intimidate residents into abstaining from the upcoming voter registration exercise which begins Tuesday.

  • Election 2020: NDC members don’t read Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has once again jabbed members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the opposition does not read economic data and so has not been able to appreciate the economic achievements of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration vis-a-vis the performance of the NDC.

He described the NDC as an “incompetent alternative.”

Dr Bawumia speaking on Saturday, June 27, 2020, after he was picked by Nana Addo as his 2020 running mate stated that the current government has succeeded in saving NHIS, reduced corruption in the public sector and implemented the Free SHS policy.

He said the government has further reduced the price for energy by 50 percent for April, May June this year.

In the first year of the NPP government, he says due to competent management, the teacher and nursing training allowances were restored.

He said in the first year, 15 taxes were abolished, something he said NDC could not do.

According to him, “it is important that we stay the course and not play ‘chaskele’ with the economy,” indirect call on Ghanaians not to elect NDC again.

  • Nasara targets 40 percent Zongo votes for NPP in Ashanti

The Nasara wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region is targeting to secure at least 40 per cent of votes in the Ashanti Region for the governing NPP in the 2020 general elections.

Alhaji Saalim Bamba, the Regional Nasara Coordinator who is leading the audacious agenda, believes the target was achievable with the level of development projects that Zongos have benefitted under this administration.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi after a day’s training for Constituency Nasara Coordinators, as part of a project to build their capacities to sensitize Zongo communities on safety protocols of the coronavirus.

The project dubbed, “We Care Campaign” seeks to empower Nasara Coordinators to lead the campaign against the coronavirus amidst election activities, and it is being funded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Alhaji Bamba said Nasara was poised to maximize Zongo votes on the back of the massive infrastructural development currently ongoing in most Zongo communities in the region.

“We the Nasara wing of the party want to lead the NPP to victory in 2020 and beyond because we are in charge of Zongo and settler communities where NDC gets most of their votes”, he pointed out

He said the chances of the NPP retaining power would increase significantly if Nasara succeeds in securing about 40 per cent of votes in the Zongo communities.

The President, he noted, had developed Zongo and settler communities than any other President since the fourth republic and was convinced that his achievements would attract unprecedented votes in Zongo communities.

“He is the only President who has established a ministry dedicated to facilitating the development of Zongos and inner cities as well as a fund to execute the development agenda”, he praised the President.

According to the regional Nasara Coordinator, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo had redeemed virtually all the promises he made to the people of Zongo and entreated them to reward him in the December elections.

He said the Ashanti Region had had its fair share of the Zongo Development Fund projects with about 50 projects including Information Communication Technology (ICT) centers, schools, toilet facilities and mechanized boreholes across the region.

  • Dr Awal calls for unity ahead of election 2020

Minister for Business Development, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal has appealed to the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region to unite for victory in the December 7 elections.

Speaking to the media during a tour to observe the parliamentary primaries of the party in the Northern Region, Alhaji Awal urged party members to rally around the elected parliamentary candidates to retain the seats for the party.

“We want to appeal to our people to conduct the process in peace so that after this we will marshal and do the real fight. The real fight is in December, so we want to appeal to our chiefs, our elders, our youth and our women to rally behind whoever has been elected today so that in December he or she will be an MP,” he appealed.

The Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mohammed Bantima Samba, who was in the company of the minister, praised members of the NPP for the peaceful conduct of the primaries.

He said the party elected competent parliamentary candidates in the orphan constituencies last year, and expressed optimism that the NPP will annex those seats from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in December. At least four incumbent MPs of the NPP in the Northern Region will not return to parliament in 2021.

They include Alhaji Wahab Suhuyini Wumbei, MP for Tolon, and Charles Bintim, MP for Saboba, who lost in the parliamentary primaries on Saturday. The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister and MP for Yendi, Alhaji Mohammed Habibu Tijani, did not seek re-election.

Also, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and MP for Gushegu, Dr Ziblim Barri Iddi, withdrew from the race barely a week to the parliamentary primaries of the party.

  • Why election 2020 not a done deal for President Akufo-Addo

Election 2020 is a little over five months away. As it is with all general elections in the fourth republic, the stakes will be high. Already, the tension has started rising and, by October – November, will reach a crescendo.

Former President John Dramani Mahama is hoping for a glorious comeback on account of his own record as president from 2013 to 2016 and on the negatives of the current regime.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the sitting president is also hopeful that his mandate will be renewed for a second term by reason of his government’s good performance, coupled with the fact that his most credible opponent at the poll is a man Ghanaians overwhelmingly rejected four years ago.

The confidence level must be higher in the New Patriotic Party because of the following reasons.

Since the fourth republic started, voters have always returned the ruling party to a second term in office. Rawlings’ NDC first served from 1993 to 1996, and returned to office for another term – 1997 – 2000. J. A. Kuffour’s NPP was voted into office first in 2001 and then given another term in 2005

NDC under Prof. J. E. A. Mills was voted into office in 2009 and the party under J. D. Mahama also retained in office from 2013 to 2016. On the basis of this alone the renewal of the mandate of the NPP government, still under Nana Addo, could be taken for granted.

The monumental Free Senior High School policy introduced by Nana Addo seems to be the magic wand that will secure electoral victory, come December, 2020. Indeed, free senior high school has brought so much relief to many Ghanaian homes. But it remains to be seen if it will be a case of one good turn deserving another.

In addition, the NPP believes that the dismal performance of the John Mahama administration that led to the outright rejection in December 2016, is still fresh in the minds of Ghanaians. Mahama is therefore expected to be rejected again.

Ongoing projects and policies already rolled out by the government are being relied on to secure victory for the NPP administration. One District One Factory (1D1F), One Village One Dam, Planting for Food and Jobs, NABCO, on-going road projects, etc. . are expected to deliver victory for Nana Addo.

Is victory for Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party a forgone conclusion? I don’t think so.

Some Ghanaians may be disappointed in the Nana Addo led government and may want to punish them electorally.

The ban on illegal mining (galamsey) with all the good intentions was frowned upon by many. Businesses collapsed, livelihoods and properties were lost. Though the ban has been lifted, some people suffered irreparable damage. Those bearing the scars may want to exact their pound of flesh.

The circumstances under which seized excavators disappeared in broad daylight under the watch of a cabinet minister left a sour taste in the mouth of many Ghanaians.

A good number of the good people of Ghana think Nana Addo and his government have not matched their anti corruption rhetorics with concrete actions.

What’s more, there is perceived corruption among some of Nana Addo’s appointees. To date, no concrete action has been taken against any appointee beside loss of job.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor which many thought was going to send the corrupt running for cover has had no impact at all.

The NPP is also shooting itself in the foot in the manner it is conducting the selection of parliamentary candidates for December 2020. The party doesn’t seem to learn from history. The insistence on forcing some candidates to stand unopposed at the party’s primaries is highly unpopular and is frowned upon by the rank and file.

Anytime the party adopts this approach, it invariably affects their fortunes at the polls. It is therefore surprising that the party hierarchy insists on traversing this path.

The Ghanaian voter has been more sophisticated and therefore less predictable. Ghana’s foremost pollster, Ben Ephson will tell you how difficult it is to accurately predict election outcomes these days.

Nothing is therefore settled. Recent happenings with regard to the voters’ register suggest that the NPP believes a newly compiled register will boost their chances of winning in December. The NDC on the other hand have their hopes of emerging victorious hinged on the current register.

  • Dont cheapen yourselves as a tool for political violence Sheikh Aremeyaw to Muslim youth

The spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu has urged Muslim youth to shun any politician who would attempt to use them to achieve their end or to cause mayhem during this year’s December elections.

He advised Muslim youth to resist the temptation of being used by politicians to foment trouble, adding that “Muslim youth need better education and not violence.”

He said the prevailing peace, political stability and sound economic management in Ghana had been recognised internationally and that the country had won an enviable position as the beacon of democracy in West Africa, which should be jealously protected.

He pointed out that Islam stood for peace, and therefore all Muslims, irrespective of their educational or ethnic background, should preach peace and pray against violence in the country.

According to him, Zongo communities in the country were experiencing change through government’s social intervention programmes aimed at creating employment for the people, and appealed to them to do their best to consolidate such gains.

He indicated that responses and statements from various political divides in the ongoing debate over the compilation of a new electoral register portend danger for our country.

“We must reject any mindset that seeks to accept violence as a means for political expression. We must speak against this with the strongest of voice”, he urged opinion leaders.

He added that “our young people should not be reduced by politicians to become tools to visit political violence. It is immoral and must be condemned”. Sheikh Aremeyaw was speaking at a press soiree organised by The Light Foundation in Accra.

The Light Foundation was established in 2005 to help poor people access basic services including education, water, sanitation and healthcare.

Guided by the core values of peace, excellence, compassion and social justice, the Light Foundation’s press encounter with the media was to spell out activities in helping to ensure a peaceful election in December 2020.

Fake news hampering the fight against COVID-19

Sheikh Aremeyaw highlighted fake news as one of the challenges the country is facing in the fight against COVID-19.

According to him, there are times when people have experienced falsification of information that casts doubts on the information they are being given. These doubts, he stated, discourage people from taking the precautionary measures, making it a very serious trend for Ghana as a nation.

He, therefore, encouraged politicians to refrain from the unnecessary politicisation of official information in the fight against the pandemic.

“It is worrying to see people on the media front from the political divide exchanging words about what is to be done rather than sounding complimentary to the efforts being made and taking entrenched positions. We need to work hard to ensure we all contribute our quota to ensure our safety,” he lamented.

  • Minority Caucus condemn manner of arrest of ‘NDC man of God’

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned and denounced the manner of arrest by National Security operatives of Apostle Kwabena Owusu Agyei a self-acclaimed pastor on Tuesday.

According to the Minority Caucus, the manner of arrest of Apostle Kwabena Owusu Agyei violated his fundamental human rights.

Speaking to Journalists at Parliament House on Wednesday, the Minority Ranking Member on the Committee on Interior, James Agalga said article 19 of the 1992 Constitution enjoins arresting officers to respect the innocence of suspects until they are proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

James Agalga pointed out that the arrest warrant was not read to the suspect before he was whisked by security personnel and the display of the suspect before the cameras could prejudice the outcome of any future trial of the suspect.

He said the government has allegedly decided to intimidate people who criticize the wrongdoing of government and state agencies which according to the Minority is unfortunate.

Apostle Kwabena Owusu Agyei, Founder and Leader of the Hezekiah Apostolic Prayer Ministry, who allegedly threatened to ‘kill’ Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) has been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court.

The self-styled man of God is also said to have insulted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He has been charged with the threat of death, offensive conduct to the breach of peace, and possession of a narcotic drug.

He is said to have threatened the life of Mrs. Jean Mensa after insulting her and the President.

He has denied all the charges and would make his next appearance on June 23.

Police Sergeant Frederick Sarpong, told the Court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh that the accused, on Thursday, June 4, made a live video of himself on Facebook and YouTube threatening to kill the EC Chairperson if she went ahead with the compilation of the new voters’ register.

In the same video, he rained insults on Mrs. Jean Mensa and the President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

  • Today in 2019: There will be war in Ghana during 2020 elections Prophet claims

Exactly a year today, the General Overseer of the Prevailing Ministries International Church, Prophet Emmanuel Perry Appau beseeched Ghanaians to pray for the nation as he had foreseen an attack on the country during the 2020 general elections.

According to Prophet Appau, God revealed to him in a dream the state of war and defeat the country will be in, during the upcoming general elections if the citizens do not pray for help.

“Pray for Ghana. It is our country. We have no other land of our own to escape to when there is a problem. I saw in the dream that foreigners have entered into the borders of Ghana and have started killing our people. God instructed me to tell others to pray for the nation during elections next year”, he said in an interview with Zionfelix on his “Uncut” show.

Prophet Emmanuel Perry Appau has told Ghanaians to be prayerful because of an impending war that will occur during the 2020 general elections.

The General Overseer of the Prevailing Ministries International Church made this revelation during an interview with Zionfelix on the “Uncut” show.

According to the man of God, it was revealed to him in a dream that foreigners would enter the country through its borders and start killing Ghanaians.

He stated further that in his dream, there was total darkness in the country and Ghanaians had to run for their lives.

Even renowned preachers and clergymen run away for fear of getting killed.

Prophet Perry added that when he finally woke up from his dream, God told him to tell Ghanaians to pray fervently for the country.

He told Ghanaians not to wait till 2020 before they start praying because there are evil people who want to destroy the country.

  • Manner of Apostle Owusu Agyeis arrest unlawful Agalga

Minority Spokesperson on Defence and Interior, James Agalga, has condemned the Rambo-style arrest of the self-acclaimed prophet who allegedly threatened the life of Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

National Security Operatives on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, arrested Apostle Kwabena Owusu Agyei during a live phone interview with Hot FM. The incident was also captured on video.

In the video, some men were seen entering the scene and announcing to Apostle Kwabena Owusu Agyei that they had a warrant to arrest him. They then whisked him into a vehicle.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, Mr James Agalga argued that the refusal or the failure of the arresting officers to allow the self-acclaimed prophet to read the warrant or understand why he was being arrested is unlawful.

“Just as it is not acceptable in law to threaten somebody, it is equally unacceptable or unlawful to effect an unlawful arrest. So if the arresting officers at the point of effecting the arrest omit or refuse to allow the suspect to read the arrest warrant and proceed to arrest just merely by brandishing the arrest warrant, that would amount to an unlawful arrest. Article 19 requires that before you effect an arrest, you explain to the suspect, the reason for the arrest in a language that the suspect clearly understands. I watched a certain video footage of the arrest of Apostle Owusu Agyei, that was not done,” he said.

The Builsa North legislator also described as unprofessional the decision of the arresting officers to share videos of Apostle Kwabena Owusu Agyei in possession of some substance suspected to be cannabis.

“Moments after the arrest, I watched yet another footage which also showed the arresting officers clearly parading the suspect before the cameras with substances suspected to be wee (Cannabis) in his hands. Now the way and manner in which the exhibit was even handled was very unprofessional. That could only have been done by very incompetent arresting officers. So the procedure is as good as the substantive law. So I sought to fault the manner of arrest and the selective nature of those arrests that are now being effected.”

Meanwhile, a Circuit Court in Accra presided over by His Honour Emmanuel Essandoh on Tuesday remanded the 56-year-old Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei into police custody.

Apostle Adjei pleaded not guilty to three charges to wit; threat of death, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace and possession of narcotic drugs contrary to section 2 (1) of the PNDC Law 236/90.

He will reappear in court on June 23, 2020.

  • NDCs Sosu promises total development in Madina

Popular human rights lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu, who is the Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has given the assurance that he would bring total development to the area if elected as its Member of Parliament (MP) in the December 7 polls.

He says he is capable of reaching out to people regardless of cultural differences or background to ensure development in the area.

The renowned lawyer disclosed this on Yensempa on Onua FM on Tuesday, disclosing that he has already started supporting people just that he requires political potency to do more.

Mr. Xavier Sosu told host Nana Yaw Opare that there are certain decisions that requires political influence hence his determination and inspiration to win the December 7 elections as an MP to empower him take bold decisions in supporting the vulnerable.

He revealed that Madina has a voting population of about 130,000, yet it has infrastructural deficit in the areas of health, education and road.

He stressed, however, that though MPs do not construct roads and build schools and hospitals, he could lobby through his office in ensuring these developments are brought to Madina.

“I am looking at a day as a Member of Parliament, you could rally behind the people to demonstrate against a government for the purposes of social infrastructure and that is possible because you are the voice of the people.”

Mr. Xavier Sosu took a swipe at the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La-Nkwantanan-Madina Jenifer Dede Adjebeng, describing her performance as abysmal and appalling.

He revealed that the Assembly at the time the NDC was leaving office was ranked 2nd in terms of performance but currently ranked at 13th, which proves that the government has failed woefully.

Lawyer Sosu asserted the change Ghanaians voted for has turned out to be a change of tyrannical rule, economic doldrums and hardships, adding that about one million people have lost their jobs under this government.

He thus entreated the general public especially those eligible to vote to oust the NPP government and bring NDC into power to continue its good works.

  • PLAYBACK: NDC Weekly Press briefing addresses BOST-Movenpina scandal

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently holding a press conference to launch what it has described as a corruption tracker to monitor affairs of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

According to its National Communications Officer, the party will be documenting corrupt acts undertaken by officials of the NPP that has been deliberately ignored by the ruling government.

  • Election 2020: NDC will regret their actions, they’ll pay dearly for it – Nana Boakye

NPP National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, has spelled doom for the opposition National Democratic Congress, stating the party will pay dearly for objecting to the compilation of a new voters’ register.

He believed the NDC will regret their actions during the December polls this year.

According to Nana Boakye, the hierarchy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is afraid of a low turnout of their members during the EC registration exercise and eventually the general elections because of their poor leadership.

He stated the NDC ordered their members and supporters to abstain from the National Identification Authority’s (NIA) exercise for identity cards called the Ghana card and is, therefore, reaping what they sowed.

He further diagnosed the NDC’s problem saying it has a leadership crisis.

”They have not shown leadership at all. They are going to regret it. They’re going to pay for it and when the day of reckoning comes and when we are done with the elections, and they have been declared losers; they will go back and write a report. They will go round again and go to their branch members and their branch members will remind them that they didn’t allow them to write their names when the NIA began the process of writing names, and that is why we suffered when the mass registration exercise was due and that is how we have lost woefully again. This is poor leadership”, he said on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”.

  • NPP won’t have an extravagant campaign like NDC did in 2016 – Sammi Awuku

Every election year is filled with massive campaigns and other activities by the various political parties.

By now, the airwaves would have been filled with campaign songs by political parties especially the major ones; the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Huge billboards of various presidential candidates would have been mounted but for COVID-19.

The prevalence of coronavirus in the country has somehow ‘silenced’ the usual ‘pomp and pageantry’ that is associated with an election year.

The new normal is now ‘door to door’ campaign; which the NPP describes as ‘retail campaign’ and social media.

Speaking to this, National Organiser of the NPP, Sammy Awuku said his party is not going to be ‘smart and strategic’.

“Our lives have changed; we need to be smart and strategic to reach the voter. We will not run an extravagant campaign; we will run a campaign that depicts the morals of our sitting President. We will not have a flashy flamboyant campaign like the NDC did in 2016,” he said on ‘Me Man Nti’ programme on Neat FM.

  • No drinking water, no campaign Angry youth tell MP, DCE

The Chiefs and youth of Abura Tetsi in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency in the Central Region have warned their District Chief Executive (DCE) Aba Hagan and Member of Parliament Elvis Morris Donkor against campaigning in the community over their failed promises.

According to the residents, the MP and the DCE have failed to provide portable drinking water and a durbar ground contrary to their promise.

A spokesperson for the Abura Tetsi Royal Palace Nana Kwame Wontumi speaking to Starr News said, “ever since we voted for him as our MP, he gave us 10 bags of cement and 8 metallic and standing pipes. Four years now and we have not seen any development.”

The angry youth added that the DCE lives on their lands and promised them portable water but that is yet to materialize.

“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) water project is also on our lands which supplies water to part of the central region as our chiefs took nothing from leasing the land for the project,” they said.

However, the MP Elvis Morris Donkor reacting to the claims of the angry youth said he will head to the community to hear the concerns of the residents.

“The community has had its fair share of development,” he said.

The MP also stated that none of their claims has come to his notice and does will find out the specific things they are looking and will equally address them.

“It is not true, the water project was fully funded by IMF, and they also benefit from the water”, he added.

  • Election 2020 must happen – Oppong-Nkrumah

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, says it is clear to all Ghanaians that the December general elections must take place despite the existence of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

He said the only question that remains about the elections and the pandemic is what the electoral commission of Ghana and its related agencies are going to do to ensure the safety of the Ghanaian population against the virus before and during the elections.

“I think we are clear in our minds that this election 2020 must happen. Countries have had elections in the midst of this pandemic, the question is how do we prepare ourselves to have an election in the midst of this pandemic and in the manner that we can protect our population.”

The minister who was speaking on JoyNews before the president’s announcement of easing of restrictions said the decision by the government and the EC to ensure the elections are able to take place is not a political one as some may seem to suggest. He said the EC has the duty to ensure the conduct of the elections does not happen at the expense of Ghanaian lives since life remains paramount amongst all things.

President Akufo-Addo has announced the easing of some restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Ghana starting from Friday, June 5, 2020.

President Akufo-Addo in his address to the nation on Sunday night while acknowledging that the Electoral Commission and the National Identification Authority forms part of statutory and constitutional bodies which were exempted from the restrictions, said they still need to conduct their activities in accordance with all the necessary safety protocols.

“Market places, workplaces, public transport, and constitutional and statutory bodies such as the Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education and the National Identification Authority, whose activities were exempted from the outset from these restrictions, must conduct their activities in accordance with social distancing and the necessary hygiene and safety protocols,” he said.

  • NDC can demonstrate all they want but EC’s decision won’t change – Kweku Baako

Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, has jumped to the defence of the Electoral Commission, stressing that nothing can change the Commission’s decision on the voters’ register.

The Electoral Commission’s decision is to compile a new voters’ register and has petitioned Parliament to amend Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 91 to legitimize the Ghana card and Ghanaian passport as the only legal documents to be used for the registration exercise.

The EC’s decision has been met by intense opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which says the Commission wants to disenfranchise 11 million Ghanaian electorates, hence their decision to use only the Ghana card and Ghanaian passport for the registration exercise.

The NDC has also accused the EC of planning to rig this year’s elections in favour of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Although the EC called for an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with all political parties on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 to discuss issues regarding the compilation of a new voters’ register, the NDC boycotted the meeting on principle that they are opposed to a new register.

The party has also dragged the EC to the Supreme Court praying the court for an order to direct the Commission to include “all existing voter identification cards duly issued by the 2nd Defendant (EC) as one of the documents serving as proof of identification for registration as a voter for the purposes of public elections”.

But to Kweku Baako, the opposition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not bear any fruits.

According to him, the NDC may choose to boycott IPAC meeting but they still will have no option to meet the EC in an inter-party meeting even if the Commisison to rescind their decision for a new voters’ register and rather go for a limited registration exercise.

“Look, you don’t have a choice. They don’t have the luxury of an alternative. They must meet,” he said in reference to the EC/IPAC meeting for which the NDC was to attend.

Again, to him, the NDC should focus on their court case against the EC and stop giving commentaries on the sidelines regarding the Commission’s decision if the party doesn’t want to be involved in the IPAC meeting.

He however strongly believed the EC will go ahead with what it’s constitutionally right for them to do with or without the NDC’s consent.

“Demonstrations are legitimate. It’s an option available. Protests of all kinds…sitting on radio and television and talking and criticizing and arguing, all those are options the democratic dispensation allows but none of them can change the EC’s decision,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’.

  • Rain or shine, 2020 elections will come off – Kweku Baako

The Electoral Commission (EC) has come under a barrage of criticisms by opposition parties over their decision to compile a new voters’ register.

While the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is objecting to the decision and claiming the EC wants to disenfranchise 11 million Ghanaian electorates and rig this year’s elections to favour President Nana Akufo-Addo, other opponents have also argued that it is not safe for the EC to go ahead with the registration exercise because of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

With all these concerns over the country’s electoral system, the question arises that will the 2020 elections come off then?

Seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has offered an answer saying come rain or sunshine, the 7th December polls will be held by the Electoral Commission.

According to him, no opposition or challenge whatsoever will stop this year’s elections but called on the EC to adequately prepare themselves ensuring appropriate measures are put in place for the voters to observe the health protocols regarding the COVID-19.

Kweku Baako shared a realistic view that the pandemic is far from over and so he anticipates it will linger on till the end of the year, nonetheless it cannot hold back the elections.

“We all know that whether we like it or not, we will hold the elections on 7th December. Nobody should ignore that fact. If it is possible to defer the elections, then we can say we can toy around with certain ideas. But there is one thing that we cannot change; it’s immutable, the 7th December 2020 elections. Rain or shine, it will come off,” he said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme.

  • ‘We will not allow EC boss to rig elections for Akufo-Addo’ – NDC former candidate

The 2016 Parliamentary candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Jomoro Constituency of the Western Region, Mr. Thomas Yankey popularly known as ‘Nobody’ has indicated that his party will not sit aloof and allow EC boss Jean Mensa to rig the upcoming General Elections for President Akufo-Addo and NPP.

His comment follows his National Chairman, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo’s accusation levelled against the Electoral Commission (EC) to rig the upcoming elections to NPP.

According to the NDC National Chairman, the Commission’s quest to compile a new register is a grand scheme to favour President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party to rig the elections.

He alleged that the EC wants to achieve this aim by disenfranchising 11 million Ghanaian electorates, hence the Commission’s plan to use only the Ghana card and passport for the registration exercise.

Expressing his opinions on what is happening in Ghana about the incoming December polls, the NDC 2016 Parliamentary Candidate Thomas Yankey told Daniel Kaku that the NPP government wants to suppress the rights of Ghanaians to freely express their thoughts on important national issues.

According to him, before the current government was sworn into office, Ghana was among the best and most democratic countries in Africa, if not the world.

“Immediately the NPP took office, this adorable record Ghana had secured began experiencing ‘erosion’ with the activities of the vigilante groups culminating in unwarranted brutalities unleashed on opposition members including a sitting member of Parliament,” he noted.

“Journalists were not spared their share as they were, and continue to be subjected to physical abuse, the apex of which witnessed the assassination of a renowned investigative journalist who had put his life on the line in a bid to help uproot a canker of corruption from the country”, he added.

According to him, the trend continues with the invitation by the CID of the old man Major Boakye Gyan (Rtd), for exercising his constitutional right of freedom of expression, expressing his views on a national issue and giving wise counsel on the controversially entrenched and biased position of the EC boss, a behaviour that has the potential to plunge Ghana into a political turmoil.

“Who is blindfolded to see that the behaviour of the EC boss is gradually leading the country into chaos?”, he quizzed.

“Are we ignorant of the causes of political turmoil in Africa and elsewhere leading to military interventions? Is Ghana naturally exceptional, hence incapable of experiencing what (effects) others have experienced for behaving in the same way(s) those countries behaved?”, he added.

Mr. Thomas Yankey stressed that all these intimidations are to put fears in Ghanaians and to pave the way for the EC boss to carry on with her rigging agenda.

He added that the NDC would not allow that to happen and promised to fight for, and defend their rights as Ghanaians till their last breath.

“One thing is obvious! All these are intimidations to put fears in Ghanaians to pave the way for the EC boss to carry on with her rigging agenda, but it’s a lie! We are prepared to fight for, and defend our rights as Ghanaians till our last breath, no amount of intimidation will quench the perpetual fire of freedom fighting and defence”, he emphasized.

He stated that “In any case, all these intimidations seem to suggest that the Nana Addo-government is nurturing Public Silence and this MUST STOP! Citizens’ rights are protected under the Constitution and are sacred”.

Mr. Thomas Yankey, therefore, seized the opportunity to bash the National Peace Council for failing to exercise their duty by calling the Electoral Commission to order.

“To the Peace Council, it is unfortunate that a supposedly reputable institution like this is allowing itself to be manipulated and misled by the whims and caprices of a few political actors who are in (probably temporary) leadership, thereby rendering the Council insignificant. This is exemplified by the biased behaviour some of your top leaders have exhibited since the assumption of office of the current government”, he fumed.

“It is advisable that the Council defines itself clearly, knows and also let Ghanaians know what it stands for – whether it is a subsidiary arm of the NPP government or it serves the interest of the country in which sense it should be neutral in all issues affecting the nation. The Council should demonstrate without any possibility of ambiguity that it really, is a neutral and Peace-seeking Organization”, he added.

He reiterated, “That is the only way by which it will be accorded the respect it deserves that will enable it to play a meaningful role in the current issue involving the obsession of the EC boss with accomplishing the NPP’s rigging agenda and the opposition’s determination to resist that illegality at ‘any cost’.”

He is, however, pleading with all Ghanaians to pray their part to protect the only Ghana they have, “As Ghanaians, let us all play our part to protect the ONLY Ghana we have”.

  • Election 2020: Don’t touch any journalist – GJA president to political parties, police

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Roland Affail Monney, has strongly admonished political parties to demonstrably restrain their followers from touching any journalist before, during, and after the 2020 general elections.

He also called on the security agencies to spare journalists any brutalities and rather work with them collaboratively.

Speaking to Ghanaweb at Aburi on the sidelines of an Editors’ Forum on peace and sensitive reporting, Mr. Affail Monney, emphasised that an attack against a journalist is an attack against democracy which in turn has serious implications on the nation.

According to the GJA President, Ghana’s feat as a beacon of democracy in Africa and a reference point for press freedom must jealously be protected.

“We have earned our reputation as a reference point for press freedom, but any time journalists are attacked, it dims the beacon of our democracy and injures our reputation in the eyes of the international community,” he stressed.

However, while urging the law enforcement agencies to continue to enforce the law to safeguard Ghana’s peace, Mr. Affail Monney cautioned journalists against unprofessionalism, urging them not to amplify the drumbeat of violence by any political party or display bias.

He again called on them to make conscious efforts to tilt their stories and programmes towards conflict-free elections.

“Journalists must sharpen their sense of safety not only against the insidious coronavirus but also against vicious cancer of violence. They should scrupulously think through the consequences and fully weigh the implications of whatever they broadcast or publish,” he advised earlier at the Forum.

The Editors’ Forum, a GJA Election 2020 project, was on the theme, “No political vigilantism and electoral violence in Ghana” and it was funded by STAR-Ghana Foundation.

It is 14-month project that seeks to sensitise media practitioners on contributing meaningfully on national discourse on disbanding political vigilantism and eliminating electoral violence in Ghana.

  • Avoid disruptive tendencies as you prepare for Dec. 7 Chief Imam tells politicians

National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu has called on political parties to avoid tendencies that have the potential of jeopardising the peaceful atmosphere in Ghana even as they prepare for the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Addressing a virtual Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at the studio of GBC, the National Chief Imam speaking through his spokesperson Shiek Aremeyaw Shaibu, also urged the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to work towards a free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Even as government prepares to announce final roadmap to easing of remaining Covid-19 restrictions, the National Chief Imam used the occasion to appeal to President Akufo-Addo to consider disinfecting the mosques, churches and other places of worship before people are allowed in.

This according to him will stem the spread of the coronavirus.

The lockdown and restriction on social gathering according to the National Chief Imam, has “taught Muslims how to focus on the substance of worship of their Maker”.

In a trademark fashion, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu said a prayer for the country, the president, the vice president, as well as all Ghanaians in and outside the country.

  • NPP doesn’t need EC to win elections, Ghanaians have tested our record – Sammi Awuku

National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku says the NPP is not conspiring with the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to rig the 2020 elections.

According to him, there has never occurred a time in the history of Ghana that the NPP has relied on the Electoral Commission to clinch victory in an election and it won’t be in 2020 that the party will need the help of the Commission.

Sammi Awuku, making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, further stated that there is no merit in the claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the EC is in collusion with the NPP to skew the outcome of the impending elections in favour of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He explained that the ruling party has been consistent with their call for a new voters’ register and their reason is that the current register have defects that need to be corrected and compiling a new one is the best alternative.

He wondered why the NDC doesn’t raise objections to the EC conducting limited registration exercises to review the register but rather have a problem with compiling a new register.

Mr. Awuku rehashed the words of the 2020 Campaign Manager of the NPP, Peter Mac-Manu, saying ”we don’t need the Electoral Commission to win election 2020”.

To him, the “NPP will go into the 2020 elections on the strength of our record. Ghanaians have tested us and know that we have fulfilled our promise of free SHS. When we said we will have a renewed focus on agriculture because once upon a time, we used to import Kontomire and plantains from Ivory Coast and tomatoes from Burkina but today we will grow more and rather supply our neighbours in these countries . . .So, we won’t go into the 2020 elections counting on the Electoral Commission unless the NDC feels that they relied on the EC during their time. We have never relied on the Electoral Commission since 1992”.

  • Focus on marketing Mahama well, cease needless attack on EC – Sammi Awuku to NDC

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organizer, Sammi Awuku has advised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cease incessant attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC) and rather concentrate on marketing their 2020 Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

Contributing to a panel discussion on the Friday edition of ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM, Sammi Awuku questioned the NDC’s logic in their claim that the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) are in cahoots with the governing party to rig this year’s elections.

Giving clues to the NDC on how to prepare for the 2020 elections, Sammi Awuku stated that elections are won at the polling stations and so the opposition party should do their homework well and stop the baseless accusations against the Commission over something they know cannot happen in Ghana.

”In today’s Ghana, it will be a miracle and an accident in history for the Chairperson of the EC and her Commissioners will rig the elections for a political party. It will be difficult . . . What you have to do is that be vigilant at the polling station to know that what is declared there is what you have,” he said.

He added that,”… work hard. Sell your candidate. Market your candidate”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi, adding that ”we (NPP) make sure to police the ballot. We make sure that the votes tally with our results and then we ensure that our collation is timely. So, we compare our results with the results that the Electoral Commission announces. NDC, I can confidently tell you they couldn’t collate their results in 2016. In fact, when you take the Kwesi Botchwey report, it’s one of the reasons because they didn’t even know where they won and where they lost, and you can’t blame the EC for your inability to open your eyes,” he said.

  • Postpone elections to 2021 – Kwasi Addae ‘Odike’

The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr Kwasi Addae aka Odike, has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the 2020 elections to 2021.

According to him, the continuous rise in the infections of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country would not create an enabling environment for the organisation of a credible parliamentary and presidential election for 2020.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Kumasi, Mr Addae said the current state of affairs would also make it virtually impossible for the EC to strictly follow its schedule timetable for an effective election.

“No one can tell me that looking at the rate of the infection spreading in the country, the pandemic will end very soon,” he said.

    More time

Mr Addae further said even if the pandemic should end before December, this year, the EC would still need more time to follow due process in order to organise a credible election.

“The EC needs enough time to embark on public education before its intended registration exercise, attend to challenges from unqualified registrants, undertake exhibition of the voters register and then prepare for the main election on December 7.

When asked what should be done to avert a constitutional crisis in the event the EC postpones the elections, Mr Addae said the constitution could be amended to deal with the situation, adding “protecting human lives must be the topmost priority.”

    Change strategy

Mr Addae called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his team of experts to change strategy in the fight against COVID-19 to halt the spread of the pandemic in the country.

He said he believed the President lifted the restriction on movement too early.

“The government must revise its tactics to deal with this pandemic,” he said.

  • There will be chaos in Ghana if 2020 general elections are not held John Boadu warns

General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has indicated that it is not negotiable that the 2020 general elections “must” be held on December 7 this year.

According to him, “the danger and chaos” that would be brought upon the country if the elections are postponed would be dire than what the deadly Coronavirus could ever cause.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel, John Boadu said the constitution does not make provisions for the order of succession should the President, his Vice, his ministers, all his chiefs executive and Parliamentarians be out of office by the night of January 6 2021 and so the whole state machinery would grind to halt; “if that vacuum is created, it would be dangerous than the coronavirus, because it would create a lot of confusion as to the way forward”.

“So it is a must that the election be held on 7th December, we are not the only people in the world, there are a lot of countries with far more cases of the virus than us but have successfully conducted elections by putting in place strict safety protocols to safeguard the voters; Mali has voted, South Korea has voted, Tanzania would vote in October, so I do not see anybody in Ghana opposing the elections on December 7, so the Electoral Commission must employ every means possible for us to vote on that day or the chaos that this country will go through, it will be more than the Coronavirus”, he said.

The NPP scribe also noted that, his party still holds its stance that the current voter register is not credible and so cannot be trusted for the upcoming general elections, but it cannot force the Electoral Commission to do their bidding.

In view of this, John Boadu urged President Akufo Addo and his government to be mindful of the exigencies of the time and consider easing the restrictions on social and public gatherings to allow the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register and also allow political parties to conduct their primaries and start their electioneering campaigns.

“The President and the government must continue to have it at the back of their minds that, we must vote on December 7 at all cost and so must begin easing the restrictions on social and public congregations, so that the Electoral Commission can go ahead and do its work; the measures must also be relaxed so that political parties can do a bit of campaigning ahead of the elections”, John Boadu added.
