  • Coronavirus: Ban on public gathering a plot to rig 2020 elections – Asiedu Nketia claims

While some Ghanaians have lauded the president’s directive on public gatherings due to the recent increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, the opposition party, National Democratic Congress thinks otherwise.

According to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the NDC, the real intention of the ban on public gatherings by the president is to rig the 2020 elections.

“This whole announcement of emergency ban, emergency here, stopping this gathering, stopping that gathering, in my view, on the surface, it will appear to the world that the president is acting to deal with the COVID-19 and so on.

But the real intention is not to deal with COVID-19 at all. The real intention is to find space to put the pieces of the rigging equipments together. So that by the time anybody could say jack, the election has been compromised,” he said in an interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced some bold directives as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The President placed a ban on church-related activities, mosques prayers, and all other public gatherings exceeding 25 persons. That was during his second address to the nation on the Coronavirus update.

He also directed airlines to stop bringing in travellers from countries that have recorded over 200 cases of coronavirus effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Social media users are divided over the comments made by the NDC Secretary. According to some, politicizing such a deadly issue is below the belt and uncalled for.

“This man paaaa…..you still don’t have a clue on what has engulfed the world.? You’re thinking about the way to your stomach. When issues if life and death are being dealt with, you’re thinking about the election as if you have not enjoyed enough. Let’s be serious, Johnson Nketia,” one Dela Clinton wrote on Facebook.

Another user with the name Alppha Khristlyk also wrote “I do support the part that the registration must halt, but with the issue of election rigging being the rationale behind this emergency pronouncement? Oh, come on Mr Secretary, that cheap politics and propaganda.”

“How on earth can you politicize the issue on ground. Are you thinking at all? Or you think it’s all about you and NDC. Do you listen to yourself? Are you aware most hit countries have initiated self-quarantine measures by asking citizens to stay at home, companies have also instructed staff to work from home.? Please for once think about the well being of people that vote you guys into power,” Adebayor Kunah questioned.

Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCGI) in-charge of Command Post and Operations, Laud Kwesi Affrifah at a press briefing yesterday revealed that his outfit together with the Kotoka International Airport authorities refused about 200 foreign nationals entry into the country as part of measures to curb a spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.

“Over 200 people have been turned back. Only those with resident permits are being allowed in,” he said.

  • Election 2020: Akufo-Addo will ‘beat’ Mahama like Tyson Fury did to Wilder- Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has opened up on how the December 7 general elections will look like by likening it to remarkable victory Tyson Fury recorded against Deontay Wilder in the heavyweight division last Saturday.

Mr. Antwi-Boasiako noted that whilst President Akufo-Addo is ensuring that production in the economy is picking up and inflation is dropping, Mr. Mahama and his team look confused and have no message to sell to the voter.

According to Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako the success of President Akufo-Addo in managing Ghana’s economy makes him battle ready against the former President Mahama who is only remembered by electorates as someone who flourished acts of corruption under his tenure.

“It is going to be like the heavyweight match between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. Mahama would be beaten mercilessly by President Akufo-Addo. Just like Wilder believed in his right hand as his main weapon, Mahama believes in lies but Akufo-Addo will deal ruthlessly with him just like it was done to Wilder”, Chairman Wontumi said.

He continued that “Mahama will concede defeat even before the entire votes are counted. President Akufo-Addo doesn’t have any weapon to lean on, his only weapon is better performance and allowing God to lead him in serving Ghana”.

Britain’s Tyson Fury delivered a dominant performance in his heavyweight championship bout with Deontay Wilder on Saturday, overwhelming his opponent to earn a seventh-round TKO victory in Las Vegas.

  • We are winning election 2020 Kofi Adda

Incumbent Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central and Aviation Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda, has submitted his nomination forms to contest the constituency’s Primaries happening in April.

He filed the forms Tuesday with strong hope of winning the primaries and going on to win the Parliamentary seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 general elections.

Mr. Adda said his commitment to activities of the party both at the constituency and national level puts him ahead of any contender who will contest him in the upcoming primaries, adding his candidature is a sure win and would double the election fortunes for the party looking at his vast experience and the massive development he has championed in the area.

Mr. Adda said this in an interview with the Journalists after he had submitted the forms in a bid to retain his seat.

“The last time I wasn’t supported by some people but I won. So I know for sure that the people who were behind me the last time (election) to support me will still support and stand by me to win this Primaries and God willing we will also win the general elections for the NPP”.

The submission of nomination forms was characterized by a mammoth crowd in customized shirts and other party paraphernalia, who drummed and danced through the main streets of Navrongo Township.

The crowd slowly moved from the MP’s campaign office in a long queue and finally stopped at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency office where he filed his candidature in the company of close friends and other party sympathizers.

Mr. Adda assured to create more job opportunities for the people of the area and address the developmental challenges.

He said the NPP is a democratic party and has no problem when people from the party decide to contest him in the primaries.

He however expressed disappointment in the party leadership for allowing Ms. Tangoba Abayage to contest him, blaming disunity for the current predicament of the party in the constituency.

Mr. Adda, who is optimistic of massive endorsement from delegates in the primaries, urged the party constituency leadership to advise supporters of his contender to desist from throwing insults at him and members of his team, warning such behaviour will not be taken lightly.

He said: “the NPP is a democratic party so if anyone decides and desires to contest in the primaries, you cannot stop them. If anybody who has not been involved in the policies of Navrongo or campaigned for the NPP in a serious way comes here and wants to stand, she has the democratic right to do that. And since the party allows that to happen, nobody can stop her from doing that”
“what is happening in the party portrays the lack of leadership, lack of elders being able to do what is required to forge unity in the party in Navrongo and that is why you’ve got one person opposing me. Otherwise giving the fact that we’ve been able to withstand opposition and came back to power under my leadership, one would’ve expected that the party will allow me (Hon. Kofi Adda) to go one more term”.

“leadership must also caution supporters of my opponent who have taken to social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp to insult elders to put a stop to it. We won’t allow that to continue anymore. We’ll be forced to retaliate if they don’t stop”. He cautioned.

Richard Kudamo, Chairman of the Navrongo central constituency election committee, who received the forms assured that the party will look seriously into and check behaviours that have the tendency to create divisions in the party and weaken the party credentials.

He called on supporters of the contenders to be mindful and engage in peaceful campaigns devoid of trouble.

He said “the party will still need all of you for the main campaigning when a preferred candidate is chosen. So why do you have to fight among yourselves. Please let us go the peaceful way so that we can retain power in the election in December”. Mr. Kudamo stated in Kasem.

  • Deal ruthlessly with trouble-makers in election – Bawumia charges police

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday urged the Police Service to remain neutral in its operations and deal decisively with anybody that will foment trouble before, during and after this year’s parliamentary and presidential elections.

He said the December 7 Election would be a litmus test for the country’s Democracy and entreated the Police to discharge their duties professionally devoid of intimidation and harassment of the public.

He re-affirmed Government’s commitment to provide the Police Service with the requisite logistics and tools to perform their constitutional mandate, in order to safeguard the peace and security of the nation and ensure a credible and transparent electoral process.

Vice President Bawumia made the call at the 2019 West African Security Services Activity (WSSA) of the Ghana Police Service held at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

The annual get-together afforded an opportunity for personnel of the Police Service to take stock of the previous year’s activities and interact with the civilian population towards ensuring improved service in the coming year.

At this year’s event, police personnel were entertained with contemporary music from popular Ghanaian artistes, with plenty of food and drinks to savour the day.

Vice President Bawumia, also the Chairman of the Police Council, while recounting some of the support offered to the Service, said Government since 2017 provided 700 multi-purpose vehicles and three helicopters to the Service to enhance its operational effectiveness and safeguard the peace and security of the citizenry.

Additionally, police personnel were given body armours, cameras and other modern gadgets to safeguard their safety.

Currently, six constables are undergoing aviation training in South Africa to pilot the helicopters, while 50 personnel were being trained to constitute the Police Airborne Unit to enable the Police to respond effectively to aerial situations and protect lives and property.

Vice President Bawumia said 320 housing units were under construction to offset the housing deficit and thus, entreated the Service to continue exercising professionalism and adopt modern intelligence and investigation strategies to safeguard peace and tranquility.

According to him, 20,000 security officers across the various security agencies due for promotion were promoted since 2017, which motivated and boosted their morale to give off their best.

He said greater collaboration between the Police and their civilian counterparts would help in curbing crimes and making the nation a better place to live.

Dr Bawumia lauded the Management of the Police Service for introducing an Anti-Corruption Action Plan and Complaint Unit to deal with police misconduct and public complains timeously.

He charged them to work tirelessly to halt the frequent road carnage by strictly enforcing road safety regulations and prosecute offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Fatal road accidents often leave psychological scars and painful experiences on the families of the victims and therefore being the key institution for ensuring internal security and safety, you should work to prevent road carnage in the country,” Dr Bawumia advised.

Vice President Bawumia said government was leveraging on digitisation to fight crime, saying that, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Insurance Commission (NIC) had linked their database so that the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police Service could easily check whether vehicles were insured and possessed the requisite roadworthy documents.

That, he believed, would go a long way to curb road crashes and rid-off rickety vehicles on the road to ensure road safety for both motorists and passengers.

Commissioner of Police(COP) Mr Prosper Kwame Agblor, Director-General, Legal and Prosecution of the Ghana Police Service, who deputised for the Inspector-General of Police, Mr James Oppong Boanuh, said the Service, last year, performed its constitutional duties creditably despite limited number of personnel.

Currently, he said, the Service had a staff strength of 34,982 with a ratio of 1:808 police to civilian thus, falling below the United Nations standard of 1:500.

He said the Service lost 11 police personnel in line of duty last year and a minute of silence was observed to honour their memory.

COP Agblor said 7,000 police personnel who were due for promotion in 2019 were duly promoted across various ranks, thereby boosting their morale to give off their best and ensuring the safety of Ghanaians.

On accommodation challenge, he said, those who paid their own rent were duly reimbursed and thus, commended government for taking measures to solve the police accommodation deficit.

He pledged the Service’s resolve to remain impartial in its operations as the nation heads for general election to safeguard peace and security.

The Service rewarded 10 police personnel and two civilian staff for their exceptional contributions over the past year.

Vice President Bawumia earlier inspected a photo exhibition mounted by the Police Service showcasing some of the government’s developmental projects implemented over the past three years.
