A fire broke out at Kejetia Market in the early hours of Tuesday, February 12, 2025, affecting two commercial stores.

The blaze, which ignited around 3:50 a.m., impacted shops dealing in chemicals, fabrics, and coat linings.

Market security personnel and the fire patrol team acted promptly, utilizing dry chemical extinguishers and water to contain the fire before the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived to take charge of the operation.

Firefighters swiftly brought the situation under control, fully extinguishing the flames within an hour and preventing the fire from spreading to nearby stores. Out of 25 shops at risk, 23 were saved, averting a potential disaster.

This incident follows a similar fire outbreak at the market on January 24, 2025. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though the two affected shops sustained partial damage.

Several wooden structures along Agbogba-Ritz junction destroyed by fire

A raging fire broke out late Sunday night, February 9, along the Agbogba to Ritz Junction Road near Madina, demolishing multiple structures.

The inferno consumed several wooden and container units, leaving businesses and homes in devastation.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived promptly, working to extinguish the flames and prevent further destruction.

GNFS spokesperson Alex King Nartey stated that the fire spread quickly due to the combustible materials in the affected structures.

“This is at Agbogba, close to the Police Station involving about 30 wooden structures. It is a lot of wooden and container structures planted together so it made the spread of the fire much easier.”

Despite the fire partially affecting at least 10 structures, firefighters managed to shield over 50 nearby buildings, preventing a more severe calamity.

A major hurdle in containing the blaze was the difficulty in accessing locked containers, many of which were fortified with air conditioning units and reinforced doors.

Alex King Nartey underscored the issue of restricted access, emphasizing how it hindered efforts to bring the fire under control.

“Accessibility alone is one of the problems as we are struggling to get to the seat of the fire to fight it,” he lamented.

Firefighters also encountered additional hazards from nearby Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) poles, with reports indicating that some responders suffered electric shocks during the operation.

January 2025 witnessed a series of destructive fires that tore through key markets nationwide, raising pressing concerns about fire prevention and the urgent need for stronger safety protocols in trading hubs.

These frequent outbreaks led to extensive property damage and disrupted the livelihoods of numerous traders.

Below is a summary of the major market fires recorded during the month.
    Kantamanto Market, Accra

On January 2, 2025, a raging fire swept through Kantamanto Market, one of the nation’s busiest secondhand clothing hubs.

The inferno reduced multiple stalls to ashes, leaving many traders stranded and counting their losses.

Preliminary reports indicate that faulty electrical wiring may have sparked the blaze, leading to widespread destruction.

Authorities, charitable organizations, and the government have since extended relief to affected traders.
    Kwadaso Wood Market, Kumasi

Barely two days later, on January 4, 2025, another fire broke out at the Kwadaso Wood Market in Kumasi, destroying timber and sawmill structures.

Timely intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) prevented further escalation, but traders suffered significant financial setbacks.

The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, with investigations ongoing.

    Timber Market, Tamale

On January 6, 2025, a ferocious blaze erupted at the Timber Market in Tamale, consuming large sections of the marketplace.

Firefighters battled to contain the flames, but much of the market was already reduced to debris.

Efforts are underway to establish the cause of the disaster.

    Techiman Market

A major fire engulfed the Techiman Central Market on January 12, 2025, gutting over 100 stalls and destroying goods worth millions of cedis.

Despite efforts by the GNFS, the fire caused massive destruction, leaving many traders in distress.

    Kejetia Market, Kumasi

Later in the month, on January 24, 2025, a fire broke out at Kejetia Market in Kumasi, one of the largest trading centers in the Ashanti Region.

The flames consumed two shops, destroying valuable textiles and merchandise.

Reports suggest the fire originated in a closed shop that had been abandoned for over a year before spreading to an adjacent store.

The swift intervention of the GNFS helped contain the inferno before it could spread further.

In response to the rising number of market fires, the GNFS rolled out new fire safety protocols aimed at preventing future outbreaks.

In a January 14, 2025, press release, the service announced measures including the deployment of fire officers and equipment to key markets between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM daily to ensure 24-hour fire surveillance.

Additionally, a specialized task force has been assigned to patrol markets and provide immediate response to potential fire incidents.

“The Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunuor, has instructed that fire personnel and appliances be stationed at major markets nationwide from 1800 hours to 0600 hours daily to maintain round-the-clock fire vigilance,” the statement noted.

The GNFS further disclosed plans to establish permanent fire units at key trading centers to intensify fire safety education, conduct frequent inspections, and enforce compliance with fire prevention regulations.

Chief Fire Officer Kuunuor emphasized the importance of cooperation among traders, market authorities, and the general public in strengthening fire safety measures and reducing the frequency of market infernos.

As January drew to a close, it became increasingly evident that prioritizing fire safety measures would be crucial in averting future disasters and preserving the nation’s commercial hubs.

  • Ashanti Region: 25 shops, 34 vehicles at workshop in Suame Magazine reduced to ashes

Ashanti Region: 25 shops, 34 vehicles at workshop in Suame Magazine reduced to ashes

A raging fire swept through parts of Suame Magazine in the Ashanti Region, leaving spare parts dealers and artisans grappling with significant losses.

The inferno, which broke out late on Friday, January 31, 2025, destroyed 25 shops and 34 vehicles, reducing properties worth millions of cedis to ruins.

Many victims suspect an electrical fault triggered the blaze, leaving them devastated and uncertain about how to recover.

While the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the emergency, some traders criticized the intervention, claiming it was not swift enough to prevent widespread destruction.

However, in an official statement on Facebook, the GNFS refuted these claims, stating that the Mamponteng Fire Station responded promptly, arriving at the scene within 16 minutes of receiving the distress call at 11:07 p.m.

It stated that firefighters, supported by four additional fire pumps, worked relentlessly to contain the blaze by 1:27 a.m. and completely extinguished it by 4:00 a.m. today.

In the wake of the incident, artisans have criticized the Ghana National Association of Garages for failing to secure a designated fire station in the area.

They have called for urgent measures to prevent similar disasters, given the abundance of flammable materials in the enclave.

Ghana has experienced multiple fire outbreaks within the first few weeks of the year, raising concerns among citizens as homes, businesses, and markets suffer extensive damage. Many are demanding an investigation, suspecting that some of these incidents may be deliberate acts by unidentified individuals.

While the GNFS probes these occurrences, it has emphasized the need for heightened fire safety awareness, routine inspections, and strict enforcement of safety regulations to prevent further disasters.

23 shops in Kejetia Market saved from fire outbreak

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has averted what could have been a major disaster at Kejetia Market following a fire outbreak on January 24.

Their swift response saved 23 out of 25 shops in the immediate vicinity of the blaze.

The fire, which was reported at 5:27 a.m., affected two stores—S-1785 and S-1786—on the second floor of the bustling commercial hub. Within six minutes of receiving the emergency call, firefighters arrived at the scene and launched a tactical operation to contain the flames.

Using two 5kg CO₂ fire extinguishers, twenty-six 6kg dry chemical powder extinguishers, and water from a hose reel, the GNFS team worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control. Their coordinated efforts successfully prevented the fire from spreading to other sections of the market, known for its heavy commercial activity.

“We managed to salvage 23 out of the 25 shops in the immediate area. This was possible thanks to the effective strategies deployed by our team and the quick response,” a GNFS representative stated.

No injuries or fatalities were recorded, underscoring the effectiveness of the GNFS’s intervention. While two stores sustained damage, the situation could have been far worse without the timely actions of the Fire Service.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed plans to deploy a specialized task force across the country in an effort to combat the growing frequency of fires in the markets.

This measure aims to enhance safety and prevent further destruction caused by market fires.

Chief Fire Officer Julius A. Kuunuor emphasized the importance of vigilance, explaining that fire personnel and vehicles will be stationed at various market locations daily, providing fire coverage from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. “Personnel and fire appliances will be stationed at various markets across the country from 1800 hours to 0600 hours daily, providing round-the-clock fire cover,” he said.

The GNFS will also establish a dedicated patrol team that will conduct regular rounds in major markets, ensuring continuous monitoring and a quick response to potential fire hazards. In addition to these measures, fire units will be set up in key markets to facilitate safety education, conduct routine inspections, and enforce safety regulations.

“To ensure comprehensive monitoring, all GNFS personnel assigned to market protection duties will submit daily Situation Reports (SITREPS) to the National Headquarters Operations (NHQ OPS INFO) platform by 0900 hours for further review and necessary action,” Chief Kuunuor added.

In a bid to strengthen the response system, the GNFS will work alongside market authorities, the Ghana Police Service, and National Security to coordinate efforts and bolster security at the markets.

This initiative comes in the wake of a disturbing surge in market fires that have caused widespread damage. A recent fire at the Techiman Central Market left numerous shops completely destroyed, adding to a growing list of affected markets, including the Tamale Timber Market, Accra’s Kantamanto Market, and Kumasi’s Kwadaso Wood Market. These incidents have caused substantial losses for traders and raised alarm about the need for urgent intervention.

Preliminary investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire, though it remains unclear. This tragedy follows recent fires at the Kantamanto Market in Accra and Kwadaso Wood Market in Kumasi, both of which left hundreds of traders counting their losses.

In Kantamanto, a large section of the market was gutted, leaving many traders devastated. Kumasi faced a similar fate, with significant property damage reported. Authorities suspect electrical faults, poor wiring, and the storage of flammable materials as possible factors in these incidents.

The economic impact has been severe, as many traders lack insurance, leaving them with limited options for recovery. The Tamale Timber Market, a key hub for construction materials in northern Ghana, may experience shortages and price hikes following the destruction.

This recent wave of market fires has sparked national concern about fire safety in commercial centers. Civil society groups and traders are calling for urgent reforms, including regular fire safety audits, installation of fire hydrants, and improved market infrastructure with better wiring and fire-resistant materials.

  • Fire at Saglemi site didn’t affect housing units nor documents – Developer clarifies

Fire at Saglemi site didn’t affect housing units nor documents – Developer clarifies

The developer for Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, Quarm LMI Consortium has assured the public that a recent fire at the construction site did not compromise any housing units or critical documents.

The blaze, which erupted while the site was being prepared for redevelopment, was caused by laborers who set small fires to clear overgrown weeds. Unfortunately, the flames spread to nearby external warehouses containing outdated construction materials.

During a site inspection on December 26, alongside Sector Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Managing Director Kofi Adaboh Ofori Amanfo provided clarity on the incident.

“So, I think yesterday around 1 o’clock, we had our labourers working on the campsite as you saw it when you came here. So as we came here in November, we started trying to clear the campsite to prepare for actual development. So I think some labourers set some little fire just to clear the weeds they had gathered.

“But they couldn’t control it, and they had to move into one of our external warehouses that went up, and that’s what, the fire from the fire station at Sege came to help us to quench. So it’s really not the houses, as I said earlier. It was the storage area at our campsite and behind me, you can see the houses. It’s not touched. I’ve not even started working in there. So there’s nothing happening here,” he said.

Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah expressed his appreciation for the swift response and urged the consortium to expedite the redevelopment while adhering to safety protocols.

“In accordance with the various instruments, like the building code, like the site layout itself, do your best to comply, and then also you’ve given us timelines by which you expect to complete this project, do well to stick to those ones. We’ll wait for the fire department to give us an update of what may have been destroyed in the old shed that got destroyed in that incident.

“But I’m happy to see that contrary to the story that, you know, the housing project has been burnt now. It’s still here intact and that is the old shed with the old materials in there. Two of them, and then two containers that caught fire. At least, that gives us some comfort. So carry on with your work,” he stated.

NDC protesters who set EC office on fire released on bail

The Osino District Court in the Fanteakwa South District, Eastern Region, has released 15 members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on bail in connection with a fire incident at the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Asuboi, Ayensuano Constituency.

The event occurred on December 10, 2024, when the group, known as the Ayensuano Concerned Youth, protested the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the newly elected MP for the area. During the demonstration, the EC office was set on fire.

The accused individuals, arrested and charged with arson, were each granted bail of GH₵20,000 with one surety. They are expected to return to court on January 14, 2025. Despite objections from the prosecution, who raised concerns about ongoing investigations and potential interference, the court, led by His Worship Salifu Bugri Ayagiba, decided to grant the bail.

The prosecution, represented by Detective Chief Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah, argued that the suspects might hinder the investigation.

“The police alleged that some of the NDC members had gone to demolish the EC office at Ayensuano, so we had to come to court to help them and by God’s grace, we have been able to secure bail for them. We will come back to the case on January 14 2025.”

“In as much as they have been granted bail, The court has asked them to report to the Kibi police commander to ensure that they are still available. Everyone was granted 20,000gh bail. All the fifteen people were granted bail today.”

“These are all accusations so the evidence is the only thing that shows they did what they are been accused of, until then it is just a mere accusation. If the police can gather evidence, fine if not, the case will be rubbished,” he added.

However, the defence countered, assuring the court of their clients’ cooperation with the process, as they are well-known community members.

In the end, the court agreed with the defence and granted the accused bail.

  • More than 4,600 fire incidents recorded from Jan to Sept – Report

More than 4,600 fire incidents recorded from Jan to Sept – Report

A report by JoyNews indicates that Ghana has recorded an alarming 4,650 fire incidents between January and September 2024.

Engaging the media house on Monday, November 18, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) and Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Mr. Alex King Nartey, shed light on the factors contributing to the surging cases.

He highlighted the link between rapid urbanisation and the growing number of slum dwellings constructed with flammable materials such as wood.

“These slum dwellings are often used for domestic purposes, and because they are mostly constructed with wooden structures, they are highly susceptible to fires,” Mr. Nartey explained. “What worsens the situation is that these areas often do not adhere to fire safety regulations, which has contributed to the increase in domestic fires.”

The GNFS data further revealed that electrical faults are another major cause of fire outbreaks. The rainy season, with its unstable weather conditions, increases the likelihood of short circuits, which contribute significantly to the incidents.

In response to these challenges, the GNFS has initiated several campaigns, including the launch of Bush Fire Awareness Week last Friday. Mr. Nartey noted the devastating impact of bushfires on food security in Ghana, as farmlands and crops are often destroyed.

The Fire Service has also made strides in improving its response capacity. According to Mr. Nartey, over 80% of previously out-of-service fire tenders are now operational, boosting response times. However, he stressed the need for new fire trucks and rapid intervention vehicles to enhance the GNFS’s efficiency.

“We’ve made significant progress in improving our response time with more fire tenders on the roads. However, the long-term solution lies in acquiring new fire trucks and rapid intervention vehicles, and we hope that the public will consider donating towards this cause. While the government has a responsibility, it cannot do it all. At the end of the day, it’s the people who are affected, so we encourage everyone to chip in and help protect their communities,” Mr. Nartey said.

Ahead of the festive season and the 2024 elections, the GNFS has intensified its education efforts and operational preparedness. Officers on leave have been recalled to active duty, and fire safety patrols will be conducted in fire-prone zones.

“We have intensified our education efforts and are preparing for the upcoming festive season and elections when fire incidents are likely to rise. We’re also stepping up patrols and inspections to ensure that people are following fire safety protocols,” Mr. Nartey added.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officially launched its 2024/2025 National Bush Fire Prevention Campaign on Friday, November 15, at the National Headquarters in Accra.

The campaign, themed “Effective Bush Fire Prevention: Stakeholder’s Role in Ensuring a Greener Tomorrow,” emphasizes the need for collective efforts to protect farmlands and natural vegetation from bushfires, a growing environmental concern in Ghana.

The event was graced by the Special Guest of Honour, Henry Quartey, the Minister for the Interior, alongside government officials, members of the Fire Service Council, and representatives from Fire Aid UK.

A lively skit by the Fire Volunteer Group from the Nsawam Municipality also highlighted the importance of bushfire prevention in a creative and engaging way.

This launch underscores the GNFS’s dedication to environmental conservation and public safety, urging all stakeholders to actively participate in safeguarding the country’s green resources for future generations.

As fire incidents continue to threaten lives and property, the GNFS is urging all Ghanaians to take personal responsibility for fire safety, particularly in areas with inadequate infrastructure.

Over 40 shops at Kwadaso market destroyed by fire

Fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the Kwadaso market in the Ashanti region, devastating over 40 shops and their contents.

The inferno wreaked havoc on the M line of the market, leaving traders in despair over the loss of millions of cedis worth of goods, including fabrics, footwear, frozen foods, plantains, yams, and more.

The traders, whose businesses are their sole source of livelihood, are now facing an uncertain future. Speaking with Citi News, some of them shared their distress.

One trader lamented, “All our plantain have been burnt, we are at a great loss, GHC4,000 to GHC5,000 plantain all destroyed. We bought the plantain on credit and we have to pay, we don’t know how to go about it. Those who gave us the plantain on credit will definitely come after us, they wouldn’t care. We really need help, myself and my colleagues. I’m 62 years old, this is the only business I can do, I don’t have the energy to do any other business.”

Adwoa Connie, another affected trader, expressed her anguish, “I sell fabrics, shoes, hair scarves, and other kinds of stuff. I took a loan, I had a call that all my fabrics were destroyed, and I’m appealing to the government to come to my aid so that I can restart the business. I’m 71 years old and my kids are in school, there is no help anywhere. This is the only job I can do. I got new stock just Wednesday and everything is gone. I have kids too, the money lost could be over a million cedis. I’m pleading with the government to come to my aid.”

The Ashanti Regional Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer revealed that the fire was brought under control after deploying two fire appliances, a fire tender, and a water tanker. He noted that access to the market was hindered by obstructions and blockages, which delayed their response.

“The fire affected 40 stalls and their contents, which include frozen foods, provisions, and other stuff. There were no casualties. When we got there, the fire was well alight. The entrance of the market had some obstructions around it, so the doors could not open fully, and the gate not open fully. Access to the scene of the fire was a challenge because there were a lot of obstructions on the road, which also affected our response,” he stated.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
