Printing press, restaurant among 8 shops in Assin Fosu destroyed by fire

A devastating fire has razed eight shops, including the well-known Success Pub, at Assin Fosu’s Old Education Road, causing substantial property damage valued at several thousands of Ghana cedis.

The blaze, which erupted with significant intensity, required nearly two hours of effort from the Assin Fosu Fire Station personnel to bring it under control.

Among the affected establishments were a printing press, a restaurant, a dressmaking shop, and the popular Success Pub.

The fire obliterated various valuable items, including printing equipment, sound systems, sewing machines, clothing, refrigerators, drinks, and assorted goods, all contributing to the extensive financial loss.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, a gas cylinder and a fire extinguisher were found amidst the charred remnants, suggesting potential factors that could have exacerbated the blaze.

Assin Fosu Municipal Fire Officer, ADO III Paul Tawia, pointed out the challenges encountered due to the absence of a fire hydrant in the area. The lack of a readily available water source hampered the firefighting efforts, prolonging the duration required to control the flames.

In response to the incident, ADO III Paul Tawia called on the Ghana Water Company and the Assin Fosu Municipal Assembly to take immediate action by installing fire hydrants at strategic locations throughout Assin Fosu.

This measure, he emphasized, is crucial to ensure more effective responses to future emergencies and to prevent similar occurrences from causing such extensive damage.

Illegal connection may have caused fire outbreak at Circle – GNFS PRO

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has indicated that an illegal electrical connection might have sparked the fire at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, commonly referred to as ‘Circle,’ in Accra.

This assertion was made by the Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO Alex King Nartey, during an interview conducted just hours after the blaze was brought under control.

Illegal connections could be the cause,” he stated.

The fire, which erupted on the evening of Wednesday, June 5, engulfed approximately 100 wooden structures, reportedly being used as brothels.

Firefighters from the GNFS responded swiftly to the emergency, working tirelessly to extinguish the flames. Despite facing logistical challenges, ADO Alex Nartey assured the public that the situation was under control and that the firemen were doing their utmost to manage the incident effectively.

The inferno has resulted in significant property damage, though no casualties have been reported at this time.

  • Exchange of fire incidence at Isreali border kills an Egyptian soldier

Exchange of fire incidence at Isreali border kills an Egyptian soldier

An Egyptian soldier was killed in an incident involving Egyptian and Israeli troops near Rafah. Both militaries are investigating the event.

Israeli media reported an exchange of fire, but details are sparse and no Israeli casualties have been reported.

Tensions between Egypt and Israel have escalated since Israeli forces took control of the Gazan side of the Rafah crossing point three weeks ago as part of their offensive against Hamas.

Egypt strongly supports the Palestinians and has condemned Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the killing of thousands of civilians by Israel in the war.

Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel 45 years ago, has had often frosty relations with Israel, though deadly incidents between their troops are rare.

Hours before the shooting, Egypt’s foreign ministry condemned an Israeli strike on Rafah that killed at least 45 people, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, accusing Israel of targeting defenseless civilians.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the attack killed two senior Hamas officials and stated it was reviewing reports of civilian casualties caused by the strike and the subsequent fire.

Like Israel, Egypt has maintained a blockade on its border with Gaza since Hamas took power in 2006. Hamas, an offshoot of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood organization banned in Egypt as a terrorist group, is in control of Gaza.

However, Egypt has kept communication channels open with Hamas and has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

24-hour surveillance ordered by Ashanti REGSEC to counter market fires

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has taken a proactive step by implementing a 24-hour surveillance directive in markets and various strategic installations across the region.

The primary objective of this order is to empower the Ghana National Fire Service to closely monitor the activities of traders and stakeholders in markets, especially focusing on preventing potential fire outbreaks during the harmattan season.

Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah officially announced this precautionary measure during a meeting convened by the Regional Coordinating Council on December 21.

At least two significant market fires had already been recorded in the capital earlier in the month, resulting in substantial financial losses.

Minister Osei-Mensah underscored the importance of creating a collaborative environment for the Ghana National Fire Service to carry out its operations effectively, particularly during the harmattan season.

He urged all Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to allocate spaces for the fire service to monitor markets day and night.

“The advent of the harmattan is noted for its attendant fire outbreaks. The collaboration between the National Commission for Civic Education, the Information Services Department and the Ghana National Fire Service to educate our people on best preventive, as well as fire preventing measures to save life and properties is very critical.
