Akosua Serwaa, others missed Daddy Lumba’s funeral due to lack of official notice – Papa Shee

Evangelist Papa Shee has revealed that Akosua Serwaa, wife of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, together with other family members, missed the late musician’s funeral due to a lack of official notice.

In an interview on Adom TV’s morning show Badwam, Papa Shee explained that Lumba’s immediate family was absent because they were abroad and had requested a postponement to allow everyone to be present.

He also said his absence at the funeral was to respect elders who had withdrawn from the arrangements and instead stayed home to worship.

Akosua Serwaa on the other hand, who is currently in Germany, chose to leave the matter in God’s hands after learning of the funeral through hearsay.

“I didn’t attend the funeral because I was at home worshipping. I didn’t see a need to go, especially since I can’t disrespect my elders who said they would not be attending. Akosua Serwaa is in Germany, and some family members are overseas; that’s why they wanted the funeral postponed until everyone could be present,” he said.

He added, “Akosua Serwaa has left everything in God’s hands. She was not officially informed about the funeral date on the 13th; it was only hearsay. Since Lumba’s immediate family wasn’t present at the funeral, it’s up to the family to decide if there will be another service. Akosua Serwaa is the reason Daddy Lumba became who he was.”

Thousands of mourners turned out in long, solemn queues to pay their final respects to the late music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, when his body was laid in state at Heroes Park in Kumasi.

From the early hours of the day, fans from across the country thronged the venue to honour the legendary musician, creating an emotionally charged atmosphere as family members, fellow musicians, industry players and admirers filed past to bid him farewell.

Daddy Lumba’s timeless songs played softly in the background, deepening the sense of loss and underscoring his immense contribution to Ghana’s music industry.

Many mourners described him as a cultural symbol whose music spoke to love, hardship, hope and everyday social realities, noting that his work influenced generations of artistes and helped shape the sound and identity of contemporary Ghanaian music.

Others said that although he has passed on, his music and lasting impact will endure, ensuring that the name Daddy Lumba remains celebrated for years to come.

The family went ahead with the funeral on December 13, 2025, after the Accra High Court ruled that the burial should proceed as originally scheduled.

The court’s decision followed an earlier injunction that had halted the funeral, restrained the family head, Kofi Owusu, from organising the burial, and barred Transitions Funeral Home from releasing the body. Shortly after issuing that order, the court recalled all legal representatives and issued a fresh directive.

In its ruling, the court directed the applicants to deposit GH¢2 million by 2 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, as security to cover potential costs arising from the postponement of the funeral. The judge explained that while the applicants’ concerns were noted, the injunction carried significant financial implications and could impose an unfair burden on the respondents. When the applicants, made up of members of Daddy Lumba’s maternal family, failed to meet the condition, the court ruled that the funeral should proceed on December 13.

Despite the court’s position, conflicting statements emerged from sections of the family and associates of the late musician ahead of the burial. Evangelist Papa Shee had earlier claimed the funeral would not take place in December, citing delays in travel arrangements for some family members abroad, examinations involving the musician’s children, expired passports, and pending autopsy results. He also indicated that the family intended to meet President John Dramani Mahama over a proposed state burial and suggested a new burial date of March 14, 2026.

These claims were rejected by the Abusuapanyin, Kofi Owusu, who insisted that December 13 remained the official burial date and warned that he would take legal action against anyone suggesting otherwise. He maintained that no individual had the authority to change the date once it had been fixed.

The late musician’s elder sister, Ernestina Fosu, also publicly opposed earlier burial arrangements, stating that the family could not proceed with the funeral until the exact cause of Daddy Lumba’s death was known. She stressed that no court ruling or family decision would compel her to support the burial without clarity on the circumstances surrounding his death, though she later indicated her readiness to organise the funeral once the cause was established.

Amid the family disagreements, Prophet Kumchacha issued warnings of spiritual consequences if the burial was not conducted peacefully, claiming to have received revelations about potential tragedy should the funeral be mishandled. His comments added to the public debate surrounding the burial.

Daddy Lumba’s burial date had earlier been shifted from December 6 to December 13, 2025, to allow additional time for matters relating to the cause of death to be addressed. Following the court’s final ruling and the failure of the applicants to meet the imposed conditions, the funeral eventually took place on December 13, bringing an end to weeks of legal disputes and public controversy over the final rites of the celebrated musician.

  • Fmr Minister for Defence Omane Boamah’s final funeral rites to be held Dec 13

Fmr Minister for Defence Omane Boamah’s final funeral rites to be held Dec 13

The final funeral rites of the late former Minister for Defence and former Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, are slated for Saturday, December 13.

The ceremony will be held at 12:00 noon at Jackson’s Park in Koforidua, according to a public announcement from the Presidency.

Dr. Edward Kofi Omane was among eight individuals who lost their lives when a military Z-9 helicopter carrying them crashed at Adansi-Akrofum on Wednesday, August 6, in the Ashanti Region.

The others who perished in the crash are:Former Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Aboagye; Former Deputy Director-General of NADMO, Squadron Leader Peter Anala of the Ghana Air Force; Flying Officer Tsum Ampadu of the Ghana Air Force; and Sergeant Ernest Addo of the Ghana Air Force.

On Friday, the government organized a State funeral to lay to rest six out of the eight victims of the Adansi helicopter crash. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed had been buried earlier on Sunday, August 10.

Janazah prayers were held at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra before the burials at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo. During the State burial, tributes were read by the bereaved families, reflecting on the love, peace, and joy they had shared with the deceased.

President Mahama, in his tribute, eulogized each of the victims, highlighting their contributions and outstanding qualities. “Each of these men had a story. Each had a family they cherished, a vision they pursued, and a heart that beat with love for Ghana,” the President said.

The solemn and emotional ceremony brought together families, friends, mourners, and representatives of international organizations. Following the interfaith service at Black Star Square, the gathering proceeded to the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo, Greater Accra Region, where the burials took place.

President Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the families of the deceased, the Ghana Armed Forces, government officials, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and other dignitaries took turns laying wreaths in memory of the victims of the tragic incident.

Investigations into the Z-9 helicopter crash officially began following the establishment of an investigative Board, as announced by the Ministry of Defense.

The Investigative Committee that examined the circumstances surrounding the crash concluded that the incident was caused by a loss of altitude and lift resulting from a downdraft.

A sudden downward rush of air forced the helicopter down, reducing its ability to stay airborne. According to the committee, the tragedy was not the fault of the pilot, nor was it due to a technical problem.

This revelation was made public on Tuesday, November 11, through a member of the Investigative Board, Captain Paul Forjoe.

Captain Forjoe, who doubles as an investigator and retired pilot with the AAIBG, added that although the Z-9 helicopter met all requirements before embarking on its journey, the inadequacy of necessary safety devices, such as warning systems, sensors, and protective mechanisms, also contributed to the crash.

“The investigation determined that the accident was caused by the sudden loss of altitude and lift due to downdraft. This loss of altitude without change in power or pitch attitude is consistent with downdraft associated with changing environmental conditions over high terrain,” he explained.

“The crash could have been prevented if it had had enhanced equipment. And it could have put the pilot in a better situational awareness mode. And it could have put them in a much better place to have made better decisions, which could possibly have prevented this. What they went through, even the best anywhere would have struggled to get out of, with the limited instruments they had. If you have all these other enhancements, it really helps,” he added.

Despite these findings, the aircraft was in good condition to fly and met all safety requirements. The investigation strongly recommended that aircraft with these additional safety enhancements be acquired immediately for the Air Force,” Captain Paul Forjoe stated.

The Investigative Board was chaired by the National Security Coordinator, with members drawn from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Ruling out potential human error, Captain Forjoe noted that the captain of the helicopter, Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, exhibited all the requisite skills to handle the aircraft. Peter Anala had hands-on experience dating back to 2015 and possessed a green instrument rating, making him both qualified and experienced.

“To rule out any potential human causes, we also examined the qualifications, experience, and competence of the crew. The captain has a postgraduate certificate in safety and accident investigations from Hansfield University, UK, in 2024. The captain was a qualified FAA, thus the Federal Aviation Administration Commercial and instrument-rated pilot from Crystal Academy in the USA in April 2015, 10 years ago.

“Within the Air Force, he was recategorized in March 2025 as a Cat C pilot. That the pilot was qualified to be a captain of the Z-9 helicopter and he had a green instrument rating,” Captain Forjoe explained.

The Investigative Board also identified adverse weather and limited visibility as contributory factors to the tragic incident.

The board further pointed to weak operational systems within the Ghana Air Force.

According to the findings, no formal weather information was available to the pilot along the route. To prevent future occurrences, the board has called for improvements in the Ghana Air Force’s systems.

A slayqueen cannot be a widow – Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer  declares

Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer, William Kusi, has questioned the legitimacy of Odo Broni’s position as “a wife” to the late Daddy Lumba.

He is asking whether someone labelled a “slay queen” could rightfully perform widowhood rites.

This comes shortly after court proceedings, amidst the legal dispute over Daddy Lumba’s widowhood rights.

“We arrived at court and we got the information that Odo Broni’s lawyers had filed a case challenging Akosua Serwaa’s capacity to bring such a suit. But we are too experienced for such. I even wanted to plead with the court to fine them 50,000, so that they do not delay, but the court told us to wait.” he spoke after the first court hearing on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Mr Kusi further revealed that the defence (Odo Broni)’s team has filed a motion contesting Akosua Serwaa’s capacity to go ahead with the suit.

“I ask, can a slay queen be a widow? I’m asking the Akans, can a slay queen perform widowhood rites? So slayqueens and people who snatch other women’s husbands have no business with widowhood rites.”

Lawyer Kusi stated that his client, who was represented by Daddy Lumba’s sister, is currently at peace and even has majority support on social media.

“Akosuah Serwaa is at peace; she has no problem with anybody. If you even check social media, the people sympathising with Akosua Serwaa are a lot. Anyone who is not a slay queen supports her,” he stated.

He rounded off his remarks by chastising social media commentators, stating, “The people coming on social media to talk plenty about the case are busybodies; nobody sent them.”

The case arises from a legal effort to delay Daddy Lumba’s funeral until the court determines issues surrounding spousal recognition and the rightful person to perform the widowhood rites.

Court has however adjourned Akosua Serwaa’s injunction application on Daddy Lumba’s funeral to October 28.

Profile of the late veteran musician

Daddy Lumba was renowned for his incredible talent as a singer, composer, songwriter, recording artist, and producer.

With an illustrious career that has spanned over three decades, Daddy Lumba was widely regarded as the greatest and most influential musician in Ghanaian history.

Many artists in Ghana, including Ofori Amponsah, Sarkodie, Kuami Eugene, Paa Solo of Sibo Brothers, Oheneba Kissi, KiDi, and others, consider him their major inspiration in the music industry.

Daddy Lumba was born 60 years ago to Mr. Johnson Kwadwo Fosuh and Madam Comfort Gyamfi, also known as Ama Saah, in Nsuta, near Mampong in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Both of his parents were teachers, and he was the second of three siblings.

His educational journey began in Nsuta Kyebi, and he completed junior high school at Suame Methodist, Kumasi in 1979. Subsequently, he attended Adu Gyamfi Senior High School in Jamasi, but later transferred to Juaben Senior High School, where he completed his secondary education in 1984.

Daddy Lumba’s music career took off in the early 80s when he formed the Nkwanta Wesley Singers, gaining fame at the Anokye Krom Cultural Center.

During his time at Juaben Senior High School, he led the school choir and composed the song “Lumba Lumba,” dedicated to the freedom fighters in South Africa. This song’s popularity earned him the nickname “Daddy Lumba”, which later became his stage name. He also formed the Lumba Brothers band during his school days, which included his girlfriend at the time, Theresa.

After completing school, Daddy Lumba, with the help of his high school sweetheart Theresa Abebrese, traveled to Germany. There, he met Ernest Nana Acheampong, and they formed another Lumba Brothers group, recording their debut album, “Yee Ye Aka Akwantuom,” in 1986. Financial constraints delayed the album’s release until 1989, and eventually, the duo split.

Daddy Lumba then launched his solo career and released his debut solo album, “Obi Ate Meso Buo,” in 1990. The album received immense popularity and critical acclaim, featuring classics like the title track and “Theresa,” dedicated to his ex-lover. He has since released 33 albums, including notable ones like “Sika Asem,” “Aben Wo Ha,” “Wo Ho Kyere,” “Awosoo,” “Give Peace A Chance,” and “Ahenfo Kyiniye.” His latest project, “Ofon Na Edi Asem Fo,” was released in December 2022, reuniting him with longtime collaborator Kweku Mensah.

In addition to his own success, Daddy Lumba is renowned for nurturing the careers of budding artists who went on to become legends in their own right.

Some of these artists include Felix Owusu, for whom he produced the debut album “Vida” in 1992, Afia Ampofowaa, Kwabena Sunkwa, Ofori Amponsah with the “Woho Kyere” album in 1999, Selina Orleans, Akua Serwaa Bonsu, Borax, Ateaa Tina, and many others.

His contributions to Ghanaian music and the support he provides to upcoming talents have solidified his status as an iconic figure in the country’s music industry.

With his passion, talent, and dedication to the craft, Daddy Lumba continues to be a role model for aspiring musicians, leaving an indelible mark on the rich musical landscape of Ghana.

  • Ajagurajah describes family as ‘fools’ for making 2PM’s corpse stand at funeral

Ajagurajah describes family as ‘fools’ for making 2PM’s corpse stand at funeral

Bishop Kwame Asiamah, the leader and Founder of Universal Spiritual Outreach (Ajagurajah Movement), has expressed dissatisfaction with the funeral proceedings for the late TikTok star, 2PM.

He specifically disapproved of the family’s decision to make the deceased’s corpse stand during the burial, considering the circumstances of 2PM’s death and his age.

During a TikTok live session monitored by GhanaWeb, Ajagurajah not only criticized the family for what he deemed a showy funeral but also raised suspicions about the circumstances of 2PM’s death.

He suggested that further investigation might be warranted, especially regarding the family’s assertion that the incident was an accident.

“Social media life made him [2PM] complacent, he died a stupid death and was buried the same way. The family member who suggested the idea that the corpse of a 23-year-old boy should be made to stand is a fool. How can someone die this way and you will make the dead body stand, because of show off?

“He could have been laid down. They did this to silence him because they knew something about his death. You claim bad roads killed him, is it not the same thing that people use every day? This does not make sense. I hope 2PM deals with those responsible for his death,” he said.

Francis Peprah, widely known as 2PM, tragically lost his life in a car crash on Friday, November 17, 2023, in Wassa Akropong. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm, as reported by Onua FM, and his body was subsequently transported to the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital morgue.

Renowned for his rap skills and the viral song ‘Bibini Yɛ Nipa,’ 2PM, also fondly called the ‘Bars Master’ by his fans, left a lasting impact on the music scene. However, controversy arose during his funeral when his corpse was made to stand, surrounded by mourners, a scene captured in a viral video.

This unusual funeral arrangement garnered vehement criticism from a segment of the public, sparking discussions and raising questions about cultural norms and appropriateness in the mourning process.

Ga Manye’s funeral underway as Court reverses injunction

The final funeral rites for the late Ga Manye Naa Dedei Omaedru III is proceeding as scheduled, as an interim injunction that had been placed on the ceremony has been reversed.

Justice Patrick Baayeh, the High Court judge who had initially granted the injunction, acknowledged that it had been issued in error and subsequently lifted it, as reported by citinewsroom.

Justice Baayeh stated on October 26, “I am of the view that the Order of Interim Injunction granted on 25th October 2023 was made in error.”

“The Applicants failed to give the Court the true state of affairs. In fairness to the parties, therefore, the Order of Interim Injunction granted on 25th October 2023 is hereby set aside. Any party desirous of proceeding may come on notice to the other party for a proper evaluation of the evidence from both sides,” he continued as quoted by citinewsroom.

Various concerned parties had taken legal action, asserting that they had been excluded by the Ga Traditional Council in the planning of the funeral rites.

The late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, had passed away in December 2022. To honor her memory, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo opened a book of condolences on June 19, 2023.

Originally, the final funeral rites were slated to occur from October 15 to 31, 2023. Initially, the Ga Traditional Council had instructed the closure of shops and offices in the Central Business District in the Greater Accra Region for three days, from October 26 to 29.

Subsequently, the Council revised its directive, specifying that businesses would only be closed on Saturday, October 28, and not for the previously announced three days.

  • Ga Traditional Council have refused to reason with us – Late Ga Manye’s family on injunction against funeral

Ga Traditional Council have refused to reason with us – Late Ga Manye’s family on injunction against funeral

The family of Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, has issued a stern warning, stating their intent to prevent the Ga Traditional Council from proceeding with the funeral service for their departed relative.

They claim that the Traditional Council has excluded them from the funeral preparations, despite numerous appeals for their involvement.

The family’s leader, along with six other individuals, has obtained an interim injunction that suspends the funeral originally planned for Saturday, October 28.

During an interview on Eyewitness News at Citi FM with Umaru Amadu Sanda, a member of the Ga Manye family, Abdul Salam, acknowledged that the Ga Traditional Council has not yet been formally served with the injunction.

He clarified that the injunction applies to both the handling of the remains and the actual funeral proceedings.

“We decide who to sue, if the suit fails, it should come from the court. The people [Ga Traditional Council] don’t have respect for the family. We will serve them with the injunction. The injunction is not just on the body, but also the funeral.” he said.

Abdul Salam explained that they turned to the law court after the Ga Traditional Council failed to partner with the family in the preparations for the funeral.

“The choice to go to the court is that our elders at the Ga Traditional Council, the funeral committee, have refused to reason with us,” he said.

“And it is, as though, people are using power rather than the law, and we have been told time without number that the remains of our mother and queen belong to the state. And continuously, we have been told of this, but the fact is the remains belong to the wider family, that is the position of the law. We are talking about Naa Dedei Omaedru III, it’s our job as a family to also invite the Traditional Council because it is from the family that we elected and enstooled our mother and gave her for service to the state.”

He added, “It is our belief that it should be a partnership between the family and the Ga Traditional Council. However, they are pushing us aside. We have been cautioning them to slow down so that we can talk and find a way forward, but our calls have fallen on deaf ears. The body is with the family, and not with them. It is the family that sent the body to the morgue. Everyone knows that the body is with us, but they have said that with or without the body, they will continue with the funeral.”

In December 2022, Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, passed away. On June 19, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated a book of condolences in her honor.

The final funeral rites for the late Ga Manye were originally scheduled to occur between October 15 and October 31, 2023.

Recently, the Ga Traditional Council made adjustments to its guidelines concerning the closure of businesses in preparation for the late queen, Naa Dedei Omaedru III’s final funeral rites. Initially, the Council had decreed a three-day shutdown of all offices and shops in the Central Business District of the Greater Accra Region, spanning from October 26 to October 29.

However, in a recent statement, the Council revised its instructions, specifying that offices and businesses should only close on Saturday, October 28, as opposed to the previously announced three-day closure.

You will be punished if a casket falls during performances – Pallbearers told

In recent years, Ghanaian funeral proceedings have taken on a new dimension, with pallbearers dressing in regalia and engaging in lively dances while carrying the deceased in creatively crafted coffins.

This practice, seen as a form of showmanship, has sparked controversy and differing opinions.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Yaw Twerefour, the Chief Executive Officer of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, expressed concerns about this trend.

He described the showmanship and dancing exhibited by pallbearers as a disregard and disrespect for the deceased.

Dr. Twerefour highlighted that while the agency does not necessarily object to dancing with the deceased, they have serious concerns when the body or coffin falls during these elaborate displays.

“The Agency, does not have a problem dancing with the dead body, we have a problem when the body falls or the casket drops,” he said.

He emphasized that the falling or dropping of dead bodies and caskets is a criminal offense under the country’s criminal code and represents the desecration of bodies.

Additionally, Dr. Twerefour mentioned disputes regarding how morticians decorate and display dead bodies during funeral processions. He cited instances where deceased individuals are decorated according to their professions, which he views as problematic.

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency is open to receiving complaints from bereaved individuals who believe their deceased relatives were not properly preserved at the morgue.

Dr. Twerefour noted that morgues with such reported incidents may risk having their licenses revoked due to acts of unprofessionalism.

In summary, the recent trend of elaborate funeral displays involving dancing pallbearers has raised concerns about the respect and dignity afforded to the deceased, as well as potential legal issues related to mishandling of bodies and caskets.

Celebrities respond to tourism ministry’s ‘funeral tourism’ implementation plan

A number of Ghanaian celebrities have shared their opinions regarding the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture’s proposal to utilize funerals as a means to promote domestic tourism.

In an earlier statement, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, emphasized that funerals hold a special place in the hearts of Ghanaians, presenting a unique opportunity to introduce attendees to the diverse attractions found within the 16 regions of Ghana.

“Ghanaians love funerals and it is fertile ground for tourism. When there are funerals, people gather at places. What we want to do with the Ghana Tourism Authority, GTA, is that whenever there are funerals, we’ll also find tourist attractions in those areas where the funerals occur so that when they finish, [we can] bus those who attend the funerals to key tourist sites.

We’re going to serve a lot of Ghanaian dishes at the funerals, Ghanaian drinks, sobolo [hibiscus tea] and co,” he said during an interview with UTV.

Celebrities have since taken notice of his comments, describing them as strange and irrelevant. His comments were caught on camera in a video that went viral.

Afia Schwarzenegger first shared the said video on Instagram with the caption,

“Eiiiiiiish,Kyeres3 Eiiiiiiii. Boi. Let’s collapse the entertainment industry to promote funeral as tourism? Mark Okraku Mantey should be ashamed of himself, and anyone who contributed to this barbaric idea. Aaaahhhh mtchewwwww.”

To express their concerns about the development, other celebrities descended upon Afia’s post’s comment section.

South Africa conducts state funeral to honor the Zulu leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi

Thousands of people, some in traditional warrior attire, gathered at a small stadium in Ulundi, the ancient Zulu kingdom capital, to honor Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) who passed away at the age of 95.

President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to him, acknowledging his impact on South Africa’s modern history.

Family members led a procession with the coffin draped in an animal skin and an IFP flag, while mourners, some in traditional attire, sat around.

The IFP Women’s Brigade chanted in Zulu, and various dignitaries, including former presidents Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki, attended the ceremony.

Buthelezi’s legacy remains contested, with some viewing him as a protector of Zulu culture and others as an apartheid collaborator and mass murderer due to the violence associated with the IFP.

Netizens descend on Kuami Eugene for choice of outfit at father’s funeral

Ghana’s renowned music sensation, Kuami Eugene, found himself embroiled in controversy following his attire selection for his father’s funeral, which triggered a flurry of responses on social media.

During the solemn event on August 26th, Kuami Eugene’s choice of clothing raised eyebrows. He appeared in an unconventional ensemble comprising a black long-sleeve shirt, trousers, platform boots, and even earrings.

Videos circulating on social media depicted him walking with his entourage, displaying a relaxed demeanour and even chewing gum as he headed to the venue of the service.

However, this seemingly indifferent attitude did not sit well with many Ghanaians.

Critics promptly utilised various social media platforms to express their disapproval.

They contended that his chosen attire was inappropriate for a funeral service, particularly one that honoured his own father. The outfit was characterised as untidy and lacking the reverence and respect typically associated with such occasions.

Amid the surge of criticism, some individuals proposed an alternative course of action. They suggested that Kuami Eugene could have opted for traditional clothing instead.

Traditional garments carry profound cultural significance during funerals, representing honour for the departed and the event itself.

Kuami Eugene’s contemporary and somewhat flashy outfit appeared to clash with the customary tone of funerals in Ghana, leading to disappointment among many due to his unorthodox selection.

This is not the first instance where Kuami Eugene’s fashion sense has come under scrutiny. His outfits at various events over the years have been a subject of conversation, with many attributing the perceived lack of creativity to him and his stylist.

  • Lawyer sets record straight on Rev Kwadwo Boakye’s funeral brouhaha

Lawyer sets record straight on Rev Kwadwo Boakye’s funeral brouhaha

Amidst the legal dispute surrounding the funeral of the late Founder and General Overseer of the Resurrection Power New Generation Church, Rev. Anthony Kwadwo Boakye, lawyer Anokye Frimpong has provided insight into the constitutional context relevant to the ongoing controversy.

The funeral arrangements for Rev. Boakye have been entangled with two court injunctions, prompting lawyer Anokye Frimpong to clarify the rights and responsibilities pertaining to such ceremonies.

In an interview on Angel News on August 3, 2023, he explained that the constitution specifies that only the family head of the deceased has the authority to decide the guest list and make all funeral arrangements.

He emphasized that the late pastor’s wife and children do not have any decision-making power in the arrangements, as that responsibility solely lies with the family head.

He further clarified that once a person passes away, their possessions and funeral arrangements become the responsibility of the family, and it is the family head who takes charge of such matters.

“If someone dies, the moment the person is no more, all his properties no longer belong to him, even though they used to be his/hers when he/she was alive.

“So, we don’t say, ‘like the late Kwadwo Mensah’s properties,’ but we say, ‘the late Kwadwo Mensah’s estate.’ Similarly, when someone dies, their body, funeral, or place of burial is not the responsibility of the wife or the children.

“When someone dies, their body, funeral, and everything related to them belongs to the family, specifically the head of the family (Abusuapanyin, who is in charge), and not to the wife or children.

“This kind of case has been to court thousands of times all around the world. There is a common principle we all follow called common law,” he said.

The attorney continued by saying that any “death wish” or instructions provided by the deceased regarding his funeral arrangements or inheritance are not enforceable legally since such power belongs to the family head and key figures in the extended family system.

“So sometimes, you hear people saying that the deceased person instructed not to be buried here or there, or that certain people shouldn’t attend their funeral, we call these things a ‘death wish.’ People used to say that when they die, a certain person should inherit their belongings. All these statements are considered a death wish. According to the law, nobody can appoint their successor after their death, and nobody can dictate who should or shouldn’t attend their funeral.

“Only the family head and the principal members of the family are the ones to decide who should come to the funeral or not. The reality is that only one person can decide anything about a deceased person, and that person is the family head of the deceased (Abusuapanyin).”

He added “The kind of family I am talking about is the extended family system, not the nuclear family. I mean the family to which the late Reverend or the wife belonged before they married; the family that escorted him to the lady’s place to go and marry her. That is the family I am talking about, so the family head of that family is the only person who can decide in this case. And if it was the death of the woman, her family to which she belonged before her marriage, the family head is the one who can decide.

“The children are not part of the said family, and the wife is not part either.”

A High Court has issued an injunction on the funeral of Rev. Anthony Kwadwo Boakye. The funeral, originally scheduled for Saturday, August 5, 2023, was halted by the court following a request for interpretation from Margaret Boakye, the widow of the late pastor.

Rev. Anthony Boakye passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, after a prolonged illness, which led to conflicts between his widow, his family, and his church.

During the One-Week Ceremony of the late pastor at the church premises, an issue arose when his widow was prevented from attending. In response, the widow filed a writ at the Kumasi High Court, seeking, among other things, an injunction on the funeral scheduled for August 5.

She also sought the court’s validation of her marriage to the late pastor, claiming that she should be granted the right to perform all the widowhood rights in accordance with traditions.

In addition to the widow’s injunction, the funeral has been further halted by an interlocutory injunction. This decision was documented by the court after the involved parties, including the church, some family members of the late pastor, and the late pastor’s children, filed appearances in the case on Thursday, August 3, 2023.

Social media users react to saucepan-shaped coffin

Social media users have become interested in a coffin shaped like a saucepan, sparking lively conversations and eliciting a range of responses.

In a viral video, a group of seven men can be seen carrying the coffin in question, which is shaped like a silver saucepan and has a handle.

Users discussed the unusual funeral arrangement in the comments section of the tweet, which spurred discussions. Some held the assertion that the individual being buried might have been engaged in selling beans.

A user who claimed to be familiar with the questioned funeral provided an other viewpoint. This person claims that the deceased woman was not a food vendor but rather a worker in Tema’s aluminum sector.

The user clarified, “The person who took this video should be ashamed of him or herself because this funeral was held in Adjen Kotoku Amoahman, and I was there to witness it. It’s not because the person is a Gob3 seller, but they worked at an aluminum company in Tema.”

Woman found alive at her funeral dies after a week in hospital

Bella Montoya, a 76-year-old woman from Ecuador, tragically passed away days after a shocking incident at her funeral.

Initially, a doctor at a Babahoyo hospital had pronounced her dead. However, during her wake, mourners were startled to hear knocking sounds coming from inside her coffin, prompting an immediate rush to return her to the hospital for further treatment.

After spending seven days in intensive care, the Ecuadorian health ministry sadly confirmed that Bella Montoya passed away on Friday due to an ischemic stroke. Throughout her hospitalization, she had been under constant observation by medical professionals.

In an interview with a local newspaper, Gilbert Barbera, Bella Montoya’s son, expressed his grief, saying, “This time my mother really did die. My life will never be the same.”

Following her passing on June 16th, Bella Montoya’s body was returned to the same funeral home before being laid to rest in a public cemetery, as reported by local media.

Reports suggest that Bella Montoya suffered from catalepsy, a condition characterized by seizures, loss of consciousness, and rigidity of the body.

In response to this unique case, the Ecuadorian health ministry has formed a commission of experts to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding her situation.

Ms Montoya was placed in a coffin and taken to the funeral parlour in Babahoyo, south-west of capital Quito, after being declared dead on 9 June.

But after almost five hours inside, the woman gasped for air after her relatives opened the coffin to change her clothes for the funeral.

Minutes later, she was stretchered out by fire fighters and transferred back to the same hospital.

Bella Montoya is not the only person to “come alive” after being officially declared dead.

In February, an 82-year-old woman was found to be breathing while lying in a funeral home in New York State. She had been pronounced dead three hours earlier at a nursing home.

22 Agou residents hospitalised after eating at a funeral

A reported case of food poisoning in the farming community of Agou, located in the Nkwanta South of the Oti Region, has led to the hospitalization of twenty-two individuals.

These individuals experienced symptoms of acute diarrhea and other related ailments after consuming food at a funeral on Sunday morning.

Thirteen of the victims have been admitted to Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital, while the remaining nine are receiving treatment at Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital.

Dr. Theophilus Amoatey, the Medical Superintendent of Nkwanta Municipal Hospital, stated in an interview that all the affected individuals presented symptoms of vomiting and acute diarrhea.

According to reports, the victims were served food including porridge, rice, Banku, Meat and Pito a locally brewed drink made from wheat and maize.

He said their samples have been taken to the laboratory for examination whilst a team of disease control management has been deployed to the community for proper investigation.

At St Joseph Catholic Hospital’ the nursing officer, David Amenudzi, and colleagues who were on duty when the victims were admitted, said most of them were not in any life-threatening situation at the time of admission.

However, some of the patients and relatives interviewed from the two hospitals said they ate rice, banku and meat, after which they had diarrhea and severe stomach pain.

  • It’s illegal to withdraw money from a deceased’s account to organise his funeral – Lawyer

It’s illegal to withdraw money from a deceased’s account to organise his funeral – Lawyer

Withdrawing money from a deceased’s account to organise his/her funeral is illegal, a private legal practitioner, Albert Gyamfi, has said.

According to him, the bank account of a deceased person is immediately closed by law when the person is declared dead; therefore, interfering with the property of the deceased is an act that is punishable by law.

He said the family should find a means of organising the funeral of the deceased person rather than withdrawing from his account, which is common in the Ghanaian socio-cultural context.

“Let me sound this warning; the general practice has been that when a person dies, people would want to go into his bank account for money for the organisation of the funeral. That is intermeddling. Wherever the family finds a room to organise the funeral, they should do so. And when probate has been granted, then if there’s any property to liquidate that debt, they use his property to do so.

“But you cannot go into his bank account, withdraw money for the purpose of a funeral. As soon as the person dies, doctors declare him dead, his bank account is closed until probate has been granted,” Mr. Gyamfi cautioned while contributing to a discussion on The Law on Sunday.

He, however, added that if an individual gathers the properties of a deceased person to safely keep the assets but does not deprive the entitled persons of the use of the property, such an act was not categorised as intermeddling with the properties of the dead person.

“If you look at Section 17, the law principally says, unlawfully deprive the entitled persons of the use. So, the law has a mens rea of your unlawfully depriving persons of the use. So, if I am only gathering them for safekeeping, I am not depriving people of the use,” Mr Gyamfi emphasised.

But for the timely intervention of some individuals present, former Black Stars Player, Sulley Muntari, would have landed a blow on the faces of some videographers and bloggers who chased him around with cameras while he was busily mourning his friend.

Unclear what necessitated the scuffle, things escalated so fast and Muntari almost beat the ‘living daylight’ out of these individuals.

This incident occurred not too long after he arrived at the event grounds while being escorted toward his seat.

    2. Hundreds of mourners swamp Christian Atsu’s hearse

The last time such an incident was witnessed was in 2018 when scores of teaming fans invaded the funeral grounds and crowded the hearse carrying the late Ebony Reigns’ mortal remains.

On Friday, March 17, 2023, shortly after Christian Atsu’s mortal remains was lifted and placed in the hearse, it was an extremely difficult task for the security to dispatch the crowd and clear the path for it to head to the burial grounds.

    3. Asamoah Gyan performs on stage

Mozambique: Human Right Watch group calls for investigation into tear gas usage during rapper’s burial

A rights advocacy organization has urged Mozambique to look into claims that police used tear gas to scatter people during the funeral of well-known artist Edson da Luz, also known as Azagaia.

Azagaia was a vehement opponent of the administration. He passed away last week at the age of 38 at his Maputo home.

Social media footage showed police firing tear gas on a procession of mourners as it headed towards the official residence of the president – an area off limits to pedestrians.

The hearse carrying the rapper’s coffin was allowed to pass a police barricade, but pedestrians were forced to take an alternative route.

“An impartial investigation is needed to determine whether officers unnecessarily rushed to use tear gas and to hold them accountable,” said Ashwanee Budoo-Scholtz, the Deputy Director of the Africa Division at Human Rights Watch.

Most Black Stars players expected to miss Christian Atsu’s funeral

The Black Stars players who represent their country in Europe and other parts of the world will not have the chance to say goodbye to their late teammate, Christian Atsu.

The burial and funeral service for Christian Atsu have been scheduled for Friday, March 17, 2023.

Due to the date, players who compete in European leagues will be unable to attend the ceremony because they will be engaged in club activities.

The last weekend before the international break is March 17; during this time, clubs will release any players Chris Hughton has called up.

This means that the likes of Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Andre Ayew, and all members of the 25-man squad announced Chris Hughton will miss the chance to say a final goodbye to their fallen mate.

When asked about the development by Graphic Sports, the local manager of Christian Atsu, Abdul Haye Yartey disclosed that the decision on the date was taken by the family, in agreement with the government.

“The preparation for the funeral has not factored in a role by the Black Stars as it stands despite the GFA playing a significant role in the arrangement,” Mr Yartey told Graphic Sports.

“Preparations are at an advanced stage and I can tell you that the government is playing a major role with the family to ensure Atsu gets a befitting burial.”

Hundreds turn out for a Rwandan government critic’s funeral

A large crowd turned out on Sunday for the funeral of John Ntwali Williams, a critic of the Rwandan government who passed away last week in the city of Kigali after allegedly being involved in a car accident, according to the police.

Rights groups have called for an independent investigation into the circumstance of his death.

The funeral was attended by friends and family alongside local journalists and opposition figures like Frank Habineza, Victoire Ingabire and Bernard Ntaganda.

“We will never forget your valuable contribution in promoting freedom of media and speech in a challenging environment,” Ms Ingabire said in her eulogy.

Police said Mr Ntwali died on the spot in a road accident on Tuesday night when a motorcycle taxi he had boarded was hit by a car.

The driver of the car was arrested, police added.

But Human Rights Watch said that “there are many reasons to question” the police narrative and called for an “international expertise to determine whether or not he was murdered”.

    Who was the late journalist?

Mr Ntwali, 43, had worked at local radio stations, newspapers and online news sites.

At time of his death he was editor at The Chronicles, but also owned a YouTube channel – Pax TV-Ireme News.

He was critical of the government and the ruling party in his reports that focused on justice and human rights, which drew harassment and death threats against him, he said.

He openly questioned state policies like taxes on land, arrests of opposition politicians and YouTubers, and questioned the death of singer Kizito Mihigo – a government critic.

His critics called him “an extremist journalist”.

Mr Ntwali had previously claimed that he survived “staged road accidents” and “death threats from state agents”.

The authorities did not comment on his claims.

    • 50,000 mourners and Pope Benedict farewell

50,000 mourners and Pope Benedict farewell

In order to preside over the burial of his predecessor, who resigned from the papacy in 2013, Pope Francis has joined pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square.

The dome of St Peter’s basilica at the Vatican was shrouded in mist as the cypress-wood coffin containing Pope Benedict XVI’s body was brought out and placed on the steps.

There was applause from the faithful who had gathered for the funeral.

Benedict was then interred in a tomb beneath the basilica.

Clergy from around the world had come – cardinals in red vestments, nuns and monks in their dark robes.

Pope Francis was brought out on to the dais in a wheelchair.

Latin chants sung by the Sistine Chapel choir echoed across the square. The mood was solemn and subdued.

Daniele, a teacher, who had met the former pontiff at a church in Rome, told me the weather matched the occasion. “The fog represents the mystery of Pope Benedict, the mystery of death and life. I feel very happy and emotional to be in St Peter’s Square.”

The pope was “an important voice in the church”, Daniele said.

During the Mass, concelebrated by cardinals, bishops and priests, Pope Francis spoke of “wisdom, tenderness and devotion that he bestowed upon us over the years”.

“Benedict, faithful friend of the Bridegroom,” he said referring to Jesus, “may your joy be complete as you hear his voice, now and forever.”

Some 50,000 mourners came to the funeral, according to police. Official delegations were there from Italy and from former Pope Benedict’s home country of Germany. Other leaders, including the king and queen of Belgium attended in a private capacity.

Benedict’s death brings to an end the era of a pope and a former pope living side by side in the Vatican – an unprecedented situation brought about by Benedict’s resignation almost a decade ago.
