New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and founder of Asaase Radio, Mr Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has labelled President John Mahama as the most prepared in Ghana’s politics, given his experience and rise through the ranks
He made these remarks during an appearance on Asaase Radio on Monday, June 16.
He cited the president’s rise from an assemblyman — where he gathered valuable experience — to vice president, and now to his current position as Ghana’s first gentleman, serving a second term.
He said, “I think the current president is probably the most prepared president we’ve had. From assemblyman (sic)to where he is now, vice president, president, you’ve been in opposition, seen who your real friends are, learned from your mistakes, identified missed opportunities, and now you’ve been given another chance.”
He, however, acknowledged that despite his experience, he risks being unable to deliver on all his campaign promises — especially those targeting the country’s many ‘unforgiving’ and unemployed youth.
Citing how the political environment has evolved with the presence of social media, exposing the government’s actions and inactions to massive scrutiny.
“The youth are unforgiving. They want jobs. They voted for you because they expect their aspirations to be met by your 24-hour economy policy and other promises.
Satisfying them in this world of social media, new media, where every government action is overexposed and exaggerated, is a huge challenge,” he noted.
Consequently, he suggested that the government create an enabling environment which will enhance opportunities, rather than direct employment, urging the youth to pursue their aspirations with hard work.
“Your role is not to fulfil people’s aspirations directly, but to create the enabling environment for them to pursue those aspirations. If the government does that, creating space and opportunity, the youth must also put in the hard work to realise their goals.”
In another related development, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko’s Asaase Radio was ordered to shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA), making it one of 62 FM broadcasting stations directed to immediately suspend operations on their respective frequencies due to persistent violations of regulatory requirements.
A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following their victory in the 2024 general elections.
In a post on X, Gabby wrote, “Congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress for an emphatic victory. The people have spoken. Democracy lives. Let Ghana be the ultimate winner.”
His message comes in the wake of NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceding defeat in the presidential race. Addressing the media on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that internal results from the NPP confirmed Mahama’s decisive win and the NDC’s majority in Parliament.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the media, following yesterday’s presidential and parliamentary elections, Ghanaians at home and abroad have been sitting on tenterhooks awaiting the outcome of the elections. Let me say that the data from our own internal collation of the election results indicates that former president H.E. John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively.
“The NDC has also won the parliamentary election even though we await final collation for a number of seats; however, I believe ultimately that this will not change the overall outcome. I have just called H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia reiterated his commitment to “respect the decision of Ghanaians” and work toward easing political tension in the country.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission is yet to officially declare the results. Provisional tallies indicate that the NDC has won over 130 parliamentary seats, solidifying its position in the incoming government.
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has called out the Chairman of the McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley for stating that challenges faced by stakeholders in Ghana’s private sector are due to failed government policies.
Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala Dinner on November 7, 2024, Dr. McKorley categorically called out government policies that have impacted entrepreneurship in the country.
“I will be very blunt, government policies have really not helped the private sector. That is where we are sitting right now, and we have to be frank about it,” Dr. McKorley stated.
“If you want to do business in Ghana, you have to be prepared. Being a Ghanaian doing business in Ghana, you have to be brave,” he stressed.
In response, Mr Otchere-Darko expressed disappointment and shock. According to him, Mr Mckorley is one of the businesses in the country that have received massive support from the incumbent government. He suggested that without the government’s help Mr McKorley would not have been successfully in owning the largest salt concession being managed by Electrochem, a subsidiary of the McDan Group, on the continent.
In a post on X platform, he wrote, “I am perplexed! This is from an entrepreneur who enjoyed the full support of govt to own the largest salt concession in Africa, with the capacity to produce some $2bn of salt annually; a project that for 45yrs various govts failed to commercialise. Aghast!”

A prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding their advertisement promoting the 24-Hour Economy policy, which is a key aspect of their agenda for the upcoming 2024 general election.
The advertisement suggested that banks would operate around the clock, allowing customers to cash their checks as late as 2:00 a.m.
Skeptical of the claim that banks could conduct transactions at such an hour, Gabby expressed disbelief and initially assumed the advertisement was a hoax.
He questioned the rationale behind banks being open at 2:00 a.m. during the 4th Industrial Revolution.
“I saw this ad on air of a party promising to have commercial banks opening 24hrs to allow people to go to the bank at 2am to transact business.
“I was assuming it was fake. But, apparently, it is not! This is the 4th Industrial Revolution, for crying out loud! Please ask bankers,” Gabby wrote.
The advertisement showcased popular Ghanaian comedian DKB, who reassured his partner, who was nagging him for money, that cashing a check at 2:00 a.m. would be feasible in a 24-hour economy.
After a restful sleep, DKB woke up in the middle of the night to cash the check, much to the delight of his wife.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia celebrates his 61st birthday today, Monday, October 7, 2024, and well-wishers across Ghana and beyond have taken to social media to share their best wishes for the Vice President of Ghana and the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
One notable birthday message came from Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the NPP and a close associate of Dr. Bawumia.
In a heartfelt post on the X platform, Gabby praised the Vice President’s vision for Ghana and expressed his hopes for the future of the country under Bawumia’s leadership.
“I wish and pray that the good people of Ghana will buy into your superior vision and make it possible for you to implement your bold solutions for the shared prosperity of Ghanaians in this 4th Industrial Revolution,” Gabby Otchere-Darko wrote.
“Happy birthday Mr Vice President. You are, indeed, a good man,” he added.
Dr Bawumia hopes to win the 2024 presidential election on the ticket of the NPP.

Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has addressed recent rumours regarding the health status of Nana Bediatuo Asante, Secretary to the President.
In a post on Facebook, he emphasized that Nana Bediatuo has not undergone any significant medical procedure, stating, “He has had no 10-hour brain surgery, please.”
In his remarks, Otchere-Darko expressed concern over the negative sentiments surrounding Nana Bediatuo’s condition, saying, “The hatred is deep and scary. To wish a fellow human being dead and be disappointed he is still alive is devilishly debased. Anger, says Aristotle, can be cured by time; but hatred cannot.”
The Office of the President recently provided updates on Nana Bediatuo’s health, confirming that he began feeling unwell after attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. According to a statement, “He then began to feel unwell and was subsequently admitted to hospital.”
The presidency reassured the public that Nana Bediatuo is “currently in stable condition and responding well to treatment,” with his medical team expressing confidence in his recovery. They noted, “Nana Bediatuo Asante’s recovery is on track, and we remain hopeful for his swift return to full strength.”
Additionally, the Office of the President requested prayers and support for Nana Bediatuo and his family during this challenging time, stating, “We ask for continued prayers and support for him and his family during this difficult period. Further updates will be provided when necessary.”
Nana Bediatuo Asante has served as President Akufo-Addo’s Executive Secretary for several years and was appointed as an Ambassador-at-Large in June 2024.
His appointment was announced during a ceremony at Jubilee House, where he, along with nine other diplomats, was tasked with representing Ghana globally. President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of these diplomats in promoting Ghana’s interests, urging them to “strengthen bilateral ties, attract investment, and project Ghana as a beacon of stability and progress.”
Seven years ago, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, voiced a strong stance on the battle against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
In an X post on April 6, 2017, he wrote, “Posterity shall not forgive Akufo-Addo and our generation if we don’t win the war against galamsey.”
Fast forward to today, the fight against illegal mining is still far from over, with severe consequences for the environment and public health.
Environmentalists and health professionals have continuously raised concerns about the devastating impact of galamsey, particularly the pollution of major water bodies. Rivers such as the Bonsa in the Western Region and the Pra in the Ashanti Region have been severely contaminated by toxic chemicals used in mining.
Additionally, forest reserves like the Tano Nimiri in the Western North Region and the Draw River in the Western Region have been extensively degraded.
In response to the ongoing crisis, Organised Labour is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, October 1, to finalize its decision on a potential nationwide protest against the government’s perceived inaction on galamsey.
Several unions and associations had previously indicated their readiness to protest if President Akufo-Addo did not declare a state of emergency by the end of September to address the ongoing destruction of rivers and forest reserves by illegal miners.
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued an apology to Charlotte Osei, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).
This follows his earlier accusations linking her to the purchase of state land.
In a social media message dated September 12, 2024, the cousin to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo retracted his previous claims and apologized to Osei. He stated that Osei had reached out to him privately to clarify that the land in question, located near the Asaase building, was purchased through a private transaction in 2007 from a private individual named Berchie.
“I’ve received a private message from Mrs. @char_osei clarifying that her land, which is close to the Asaase building, was purchased privately, like the property occupied by Asaase, from a private person, Berchie, back in 2007. Apologies for any reference erroneously attributed to her and retraction of the same,” Otchere-Darko wrote.
The apology comes in the wake of Osei’s criticism of Otchere-Darko’s involvement in a public dispute concerning a property housing Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited, owned by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Charlotte Osei had accused Otchere-Darko of spreading misinformation. She refuted claims made by Otchere-Darko that the land where her property is located had been sold by the government and asserted that she had acquired it legally before her tenure as EC chair.
“Rich of you to complain about being lied on and yet tell blatant lies about another person. Please sue @S_OkudzetoAblak. I would love to do the same,” Charlotte Osei responded on X on September 11, 2024.
Otchere-Darko’s initial comments were made in response to a statement by the Lands Commission, which clarified that the property housing Asaase was not involved in a lawsuit against the government, contrary to claims made by Ablakwa. Otchere-Darko had alleged that Ablakwa ignored other properties sold by governments of his party, including the one purportedly occupied by Osei.
Following the clarification and subsequent apology, Otchere-Darko’s retraction and Osei’s response highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding the issue of state land transactions and political disputes in Ghana.

Now that the Lands Commission has come out with further particulars and incontrovertible facts over the actual properties (BY SITE PLANS) involved in the law suit by the Judicial Service (see attached statement), which prove that the property occupied by Asaase was never a part… pic.twitter.com/Mk8IaMKfyV
North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has named Gabby Otchere-Darko’s wife in his latest exposé, intensifying his campaign for greater transparency and accountability.
Ablakwa had earlier alleged that the headquarters of Asaase Broadcasting Company (ABC) in Accra was unlawfully acquired from state property. He claimed that the media house occupied a building that once belonged to the Judicial Service of Ghana and was improperly sold by the government.
Asaase Broadcasting Company (ABC) swiftly rejected Ablakwa’s accusations. In a September 2, 2024 statement, the company labeled the allegations as “false and misleading,” insisting that Lilly Homes Limited lawfully acquired the property through proper channels.
In response, Ablakwa has released further information, alleging that Lilly Homes Limited has ties to Nana Adjoa Hackman, wife of Gabby Otchere-Darko, who is the director of Asaase Radio.
“My attention has been drawn to a rather evasive and disingenuous rebuttal from Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited. I offer the following responses:
“1. Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited has woefully failed to point out any misleading claim in my earlier publication;
“2. I vehemently denounce the desperate but futile efforts to characterize my parliamentary oversight duties as an effort that undermines the principles of truth and integrity;
“3. As correctly indicated in my earlier publication, it is the Judicial Service of Ghana that has initiated legal action, wherein they state without equivocation that Number 7, 5th Circular Road at Cantonments belongs to the Judicial Service of Ghana,” he said in a post on X on September 4, 2024.
According to him, Nana Adjoa Hackman is the sole shareholder of Lilly Homes Limited and also a director at Asaase Radio, raising concerns of conflict of interest.
“8. Why is Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited desperately trying to erect an imaginary Chinese Wall between Asaase and Lilly Homes?
“9. With Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited calling for truth and integrity, I would have expected full disclosure of the fact that a director and sole shareholder of Lilly Homes is Nana Adjoa Hackman, who is the wife of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.
“They are both directors of Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited; 10. According to official incorporation documents, the directors of Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited are: Gabby Otchere-Darko, Nana Adjoa Hackman, Elizabeth Ohene, Reginald Laryea, Joseph Roberts-Mensah, Joseph Ofori-Atta, Charles Mensah, and Cecilia Balowu;
“11. It is absolutely misleading and dishonest to create the impression that Lilly Homes and Asaase Broadcasting have no connection whatsoever, and that Asaase Broadcasting is merely a tenant,” he alleged.
Ablakwa further pointed out that Nana Adjoa Hackman is a presidential appointee on the board of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), a detail he believes the management of Asaase Broadcasting Company should address in their rebuttal.
He emphasized that this connection raises further questions, suggesting that the company’s response should clarify this affiliation as part of the ongoing controversy.
“12. That all the key actors in this matter, from the 2006 sale to the latest Asaase/Lilly Homes transactions, are politically exposed persons cannot be challenged. Needless to add that at the time of the 2020 purchase, the director and sole shareholder of Lilly Homes, Nana Adjoa Hackman, was also President Akufo-Addo’s appointee on the board of GNPC.
“13. The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government has at no point refuted the claims of the Judicial Service of Ghana; 14. Indeed, both the Ministers of Lands and Works and Housing are on record to have stated that they are currently negotiating with the Chief Justice to explore an amicable resolution of the matter and compensate the Judicial Service of Ghana;
“15. I shall remain focused, resolute, and unintimidated in this consequential battle against State Capture.”
My attention has been drawn to a rather evasive and disingenuous rebuttal from Asaase Broadcasting Company Limited.

A leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has expressed frustration over the lack of recognition for president Akufo-Addo’s significant achievements.
Despite notable progress under President Akufo-Addo, particularly in education and health, Mr. Otchere-Darko feels that these contributions have not been given due credit.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Mr. Otchere-Darko pointed out that while overall conditions have improved, the quality of education has been preserved even with increased access.
“If more children are gaining access to education, and the results show that the quality of education has not fallen, what other problems matter? And there are more teachers than they had before. Teachers are not complaining that they have not been paid their salaries. I think that Akufo-Addo has not been given the credit that he deserves.”
He highlighted that many businesses were nearly failing during Mahama’s presidency because of frequent power outages, often referred to as “Dumsor.”
In comparison, he noted that Akufo-Addo’s administration has shown resilience, contrasting with Mahama’s government, which had to secure an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout despite no global economic crisis at that time.
“In 2015, and 2016 we didn’t have any global crisis, yet we have queues at our filling stations. In 2015, and 2016, go and ask Ghanaian barbers, seamstresses, hairdressers, cold store operators, and hoteliers. Hotels were refusing to accept people because they could not afford to turn the lights on for their generators.
“People were working and using most of their salaries to pay electricity bills, to keep the generator on. All these things happened even though there was no global crisis.
“The global crisis that the world went through that Ghana suffered badly, and Ghanaians suffered, what if we didn’t have Akufo-Addo and we had somebody else? Compare what happened maybe 2014, and 2015 when we were forced to go to IMF for a bailout when we didn’t have a global crisis.
He recognized the difficulties Ghanaians have endured over the past three years, but observed that conditions are beginning to stabilize.
“People have struggled for the past three years, there’s absolutely no two ways about that. It’s called the cost of living crisis. And it’s not peculiar to Ghana, but because of our vulnerabilities, it has hurt us the most than many countries… Every Ghanaian can say that they can see some level of normalisation.”
Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has alleged that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko played a pivotal role in the removal of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from his position as Majority Leader.
The Suame legislator in February of this year formally announced his resignation as Majority Leader, a position he held for over seven years.
According to Mr Antwi, Gabby Otchere-Darko, along with other members of the President’s family, wrongly believed that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was orchestrating the calls from Majority Members of Parliament for the dismissal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Antwi described Gabby Otchere-Darko as “Ghana’s Prime Minister” and accused him of spreading falsehoods to create discord against the Majority Leader, who he insists had no involvement in the MPs’ demands.
“They thought Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was the one behind us calling for Ken Ofori-Atta to be removed. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was also not even aware until we did our press conference. Where in this world did you hear him say that he wanted to be a finance minister?” Antwi questioned in an interview on Oyerepa TV.
The Subin MP further criticized Gabby, labeling him as a liar who lacks the fear of God. He recounted an incident where he was invited to Gabby Otchere-Darko’s house.
“You called me to come to your house, and I asked you to record me because I didn’t want him to misquote me to the president. I shouldn’t have even gone there, but I went and asked that he record me so that he does not misquote me to the President,” Antwi explained.
He emphasized that Gabby Otchere-Darko was instrumental in the campaign to remove Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu. “Gabby was the leader of the people who saw to the removal of the Majority Leader. But if you are going into an election as critical as this and you decide to take out the experienced Leader in Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, then you clearly are not ready to make history,” Mr Antwi.
In April 2024, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu said he was not pushed to resign from his position as leader of government business in parliament, as speculated.
“I was resigning to save the party; I was resigning to prevent any chaos in the party. That’s all that I can say. But I think ever since I did, I have refused to speak to any station.“
A prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed strong disbelief in the credibility of the Agyapadie Book, suggesting that anyone who takes it seriously needs to reconsider their stance.
In a post on X, he indicated that it is ridiculous that a family would document supposed malicious plans against their own country in a book, complete with a portrait of the family head on the cover.
“If you believe a family will document its alleged evil plans against the very village they live proudly in, document it in revised copies of a book with a portrait of the head of family boldly on its front cover, then please have your head examined,” Otchere-Darko stated.
Otchere-Darko referenced past occurrences, noting that the opposition had previously fabricated similar accusations against former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
“It’s not new. They accused K4 falsely of stealing all of Ghana’s gold; distributed photocopies of fake bank accounts of K4’s ministers with crazy amounts which combined was bigger than Ghana’s GDP! Yes!”
The Agyapadie document has sparked extensive discussions across various Ghanaian media outlets. The document, alleged to have existed since 2020, was denounced as fraudulent by the Okyehene Amoatia Ofori Panin.
He dismissed the document’s authenticity, questioning, “Which reasonable person in his right frame of mind hatches such an intention and documents it with his image as a cover page?”
Drawing parallels to historical events, the Okyehene remarked, “We saw this during the period of J.B Danquah and we’re seeing this now. In and around October 2016, a few months before the election, a similar document known as the ‘Akyem Project’ was circulated. Its purpose was to stir up hatred between Okyeman and Asanteman to undermine Nana Akufo-Addo’s electoral efforts. Unfortunately for them, it arrived too late.”
He continued, “This diabolic plan was revised in 2019. In 2020, when the Agyapa business became a political issue, the book suddenly transformed into ‘Agyapadie’.”
The Okyehene also countered claims that the Ofori Panin Fie had risen to prominence through dubious means, noting that the Eastern Region had greater representation in former President Kufuor’s cabinet than under Akufo-Addo. He suggested that the current controversy aims to incite hostility towards the Akyem people.
Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure within New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a message of encouragement to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known affectionately as NAPO, following his selection as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming December elections.
The selection of NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate was officially announced on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
In a congratulatory message delivered on Saturday, Mr. Otchere-Darko emphasized the importance of unity and support within the party as they prepare for the electoral contest ahead.
He urged NAPO to remain focused and fully supportive of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, describing him as the ideal partner to assist in securing victory in the 2024 presidential election.
“Congratulations, Napo! The Presidential Candidate settled on you for very obvious reasons. He believes you to be the best partner to help him as his number two to win the 2024 presidential election and to help him deliver on his promises to Ghanaians if elected,” Mr. Otchere-Darko conveyed in his message.
Drawing from their shared history, including their time at the Danquah Institute, Mr. Otchere-Darko highlighted NAPO’s intellectual acumen, work ethic, generosity, and commitment to the values of the party. He emphasized these qualities as crucial assets in advancing the NPP’s vision and maintaining its achievements.
“Stay focused; stay supportive, follow the leader, show empathy, defend the record, project the vision, sell the Candidate and help him energise the base,” Mr. Otchere-Darko urged NAPO. He emphasized the importance of rallying the party’s supporters and reinforcing their belief in the achievable goals set forth by Dr. Bawumia.
In conclusion, Mr. Otchere-Darko expressed confidence in NAPO’s abilities and called for a united effort to ensure success in the upcoming elections.
Prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP),Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has voiced his disagreement with the government’s decision to require mandatory registration with the National Health Insurance Scheme for foreigners entering the country.
Starting July 1, 2024, non-resident visitors to Ghana will need to have a health insurance policy before being allowed entry.
Reacting to this development on X, Otchere-Darko expressed his reservations about the policy on Sunday, June 17, 2024.
Ghana introduced the mandatory health insurance policy to ensure that all visitors receive the necessary healthcare services during their stay.
The policy mandates that all non-resident visitors entering Ghana must enrol in a scheme that provides them with free healthcare access.
The policy applies to visitors who enter through airports with a visa or visa on arrival, and it is dependent on their duration of stay in Ghana.
In February 2024, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority and other stakeholders, launched the “National Non-resident Visitors Health Insurance” policy.
This initiative targets non-residents visiting Ghana for less than six months within a 12-month period.
Dr. Isaac Morrison, Vice Chairman of the Technical Working Group on the Visitors Health Insurance Scheme and a member of the NHIA Board, highlighted the importance of this policy at a media briefing before its implementation.
“The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the vulnerability of foreign nationals without insurance, necessitating the activation of Section 2b of the National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852), which calls for a health insurance policy for foreigners.
Countries like Sierra Leone and Egypt in Africa have already implemented similar schemes.
The policy ensures that visitors are covered, reflecting lessons learnedfrom the pandemic and fulfilling a legal requirement,” he explained.
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who previously announced his withdrawal from active participation in domestic politics, made a surprising appearance on a local political news analysis program.
Gabby was featured as one of three guests on Accra-based Channel1 TV’s ‘What Are The Papers Saying’ program, broadcast on June 6.
During the show, he expressed his views on various political matters, including a recent survey indicating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s lead over former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential race.
“So, the positive aspect of this poll is it doesn’t mean that Bawumia will win the election. But I think the positive aspect is that it appears his candidacy is gaining traction. And if it’s gaining traction, it should help his base in tackling the apathy, that is there,” he said.
“People who voted for you, expectations in this country, like many others, are sometimes too high. So, it’s about apathy, that’s the first difficulty that an incumbent faces.
“I think that the basic antidote to apathy is your base believing that you can win. If they begin to believe that it is possible that you can win. Then they will also be re-energised,” he stressed.
In January this year, Mr Otchere-Darko disclosed that he had retired from domestic politics.
In an interview with Asaase Radio, the legal practitioner and cousin to President Akufo-Addo noted that this is due to the NPP’s inability to effectively communicate its achievements in recent years and the perceived failure of Ghanaians to recognize the government’s commendable efforts.
Mr Otchere-Darko acknowledged the substantial progress made by the Akufo-Addo-led government in navigating the challenging economic landscape between 2021 and 2022.
“I have retired from domestic politics. I get somehow frustrated by the narratives, and the big disappointment I have is with the governing New Patriotic Party itself, it is the lack of recognition of the work that they have done. For me, it’s a major disappointment…there is one thing we must admit, 2022 was extremely difficult, 2021 to 2022 was extremely difficult,” he said.
Despite facing severe economic challenges during this period, he highlighted that various policies implemented by the administration successfully prevented Ghanaians from enduring queues for essential products and services.
“You know when there are crises, there are people who benefit from crisis but I don’t know who benefitted from the crisis of 2022. The Banks suffered, retailers suffered, manufacturers suffered, I mean it was everywhere,” he added.
The management of Citi TV has announced a significant rebranding, revealing the channel’s new identity as ChannelOne TV. This decision, which had been in development since July 2021, was implemented on a special occasion: the channel’s sixth anniversary.
This strategic move aims to create a more identifiable and cohesive brand presence in the increasingly competitive media landscape. The rebranding ceremony took place at the ChannelOne TV studio, formerly known as Citi TV, in Tesano, Accra, on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Popular Ghanaian media personality, Bridget Otoo, has responded to Gabby Otchere-Darko’s call for the depoliticization of businesses, highlighting the challenges faced by some entrepreneurs due to political affiliations.
In a post on X dated May 5, Gabby Otchere-Darko expressed his desire for a future where business people are not associated with political affiliations.
He emphasized the importance of treating business people as individuals focused on success and job creation, rather than labeling them based on their political connections.
But in a tweet, Mrs Otoo recounted the story of a woman at the free zones area whose business was allegedly collapsed because she was suspected to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Mrs Otoo, all the stock the woman had produced was left in store, and the government reportedly hired a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reproduce the same material, providing financial support for the purchase of machines.
Mrs Otoo’s tweet suggests that despite the woman’s efforts to seek redress, including visiting the vice president, the decision was not reversed.
She concluded by expressing skepticism about the sincerity of Otchere-Darko’s call for businesses to be treated without political bias, especially in light of such incidents.
Gabby Otchere-Darko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his desire for a future where business people are not associated with political affiliations.
He emphasized the importance of treating business people as individuals focused on success and job creation, rather than labeling them based on their political connections.
In a recent statement, Otchere-Darko highlighted the negative impact of tagging business people with political affiliations, stating that it hinders growth and development in Africa.
He called for a shift towards recognizing business people for their contributions to the economy, regardless of their political beliefs.
“I yearn for the day when business people will just be business people. And, will not be treated with party political brush. Not NKP business man or DCP business man. They just want their business to succeed and create jobs. The tagging destroys. It stifles growth in Africa,” he wrote.
The founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries, Reverend Owusu-Bempah, has called out President Akufo-Addo for his failure to independently govern the country with the assistance of his appointees.
According to Rev. Owusu Bempah, there are rumors about the influence of some relatives of President Akufo-Addo in key decisions.
He noted that former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and prominent New Patrotic Party (NPP) member, Gabby Otchere-Darko, are said to be running the affairs of the country.
“Very soon your tenure will be over so I will be candid with you, you’ve veered off the path you started on. From where I sit, I no longer see the love you used to have for the country. I want you to know that you’ve changed. After your first four years, Ghanaians hailed you so what has changed now?” he quizzed.
“It is alleged that Ken Ofori-Atta and Gabby Otchere-Darko are the ones controlling the country now but Ghanaians did not vote for Ken Ofori-Atta and Gabby Otchere-Darko. You’ve let us down and allowed people to question the prophecies we gave prior to your arrival. You’ve changed. You no longer have love for the country. But it is not too late, you can still turn things around and ensure that you bow out on the high,” he said.
He expressed concern that President Akufo-Addo‘s heart has hardened and strayed from the path that previously found favour in God’s sight.
Drawing a parallel to the biblical King Saul, Reverend Owusu-Bempah suggested that the country’s current hardships may stem from the president deviating from God’s guidance.
Rev Owusu Bempah says it hurts him that the good heart President Akufo-Addo had before winning elections to become president has changed and has now turned into King Saul in the bible. pic.twitter.com/vwuWb9kP8B
Reverend Owusu-Bempah, while delivering a sermon, initially intended to convey his message privately, he felt compelled to make it public after finding his pathway to the Jubilee House closed. He believes this is a divine directive to address the nation’s situation and guide it towards improvement.
“The heart he had before becoming president has changed. He is now like Saul. God saw the kindheartedness of Saul and made him a ruler of Israel but at some point, Saul deviated and was not obeying the prophets and God’s words. God then pulled away from him which led to Israel suffering some challenges,” he said.
With only eight months remaining in President Akufo-Addo‘s final term, Reverend Owusu-Bempah encouraged him to use this time to improve his legacy as president.
Reverend Owusu-Bempah, once a close ally of President Akufo-Addo, has had a falling out with the president, repeatedly accusing him of being ungrateful.
During a recent interview on Okay FM, Reverend Owusu-Bempah stated that he would never forgive President Akufo-Addo for undisclosed reasons. He also revealed that he no longer visits the first family, attributing this decision to the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo.
Two years ago, a faction identifying itself as the Concerned Citizens of Okyeman criticized Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for alleged deception during the 2020 general elections.
The group accused Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the ruling NPP, of manipulating them into demonstrating against former President John Dramani Mahama, only to disregard them following the election victory.
In a Facebook post dated Friday, May 27, 2022, the Okyeman Youth for Development, one of the participating groups in the demonstration, expressed disillusionment with Otchere-Darko’s leadership, asserting that they had been abandoned after serving his interests.
The statement cautioned NPP delegates against blindly following Otchere-Darko’s directives and urged them to prioritize competence and trustworthiness in their decision-making processes.
The 2020 demonstration organized by these groups was sparked by Mr. Mahama’s sharing of an article on Facebook that labeled certain government officials involved in the controversial Agyapa deal as ‘Sakawa-Akyem boys’, inciting outrage among NPP members and other factions during the election campaign.
Protestors gathered in Asamankese, donning red and black attire and brandishing placards condemning what they perceived as tribalism from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and expressing support for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo, addressing the issue during a meeting with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in August 2020, condemned the ethnocentric remarks while urging a cessation of such divisive language in politics.
A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has questioned why individuals seeking to protect Ghana’s family values have not called for harsher sentences for individuals caught engaging and promoting child marriage.
Mr Otchere-Darko made the comment amidst investigations into a contentious marriage between a minor and Nungua’s elder, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, aged 63.
Per the Children’s Act 1998 (Act 560), an adult caught forcing a minor into marriage faces a maximum jail term of 12 months or fines of up to 5 million cedis (500 Ghana Cedis).
In a post on the X platform, wondered why the country is seeking to impose a “stiffer” sentence on consenting adults in the LGBTQ community who decide to have an amorous relationship, or any promotion, sponsorship or support of LGBTQ activities when a situation such as child marriage which involves an adult and a minor prescribes a lighter sentence.
In what appears to be a jab to anti-LGBTQ bill promoters including Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George, Gabby Otchere-Darko wrote, “In Ghana, you face a maximum jail term of 12 months if you force a minor into marriage, according to Children’s Act 1998 (Act 560).”
“Once assented, the law that seeks to presumably protect our family values (which ignores child marriage by the way) will impose a prison sentence of up to five years for the “wilful promotion, sponsorship or support of LGBTQ+ activities”. In fact two consenting adults of same sex face a stiffer sentence if they are found kissing in public than the 70-year old man who marries a 14-year old girl.”
The Children’s Act 1998 (Act 560), amended in 2016, safeguards children’s rights against forced betrothal and marriage.
The Constitution of Ghana also defines anyone below 18 as a child, ineligible for marriage. Sections 14 and 15 of the Children’s Act explicitly state the right of children to reject betrothal and marriage, setting the legal marriage age at 18.
The recent alleged marriage has ignited a fierce debate, with many condemning the act on social media and demanding the arrest of the Ga-Dangme States’ Overlord. Despite the uproar, some authorities have defended the marriage, citing cultural practices.
Presently, the Supreme Court is set to hear the unconstitutional claims levelled against the anti-LGBTQ bill which has been approved by Parliament but yet to receive a presidential assent by Nana Akufo-Addo.
A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed suspicion regarding the nationwide erratic power supply, known locally as ‘dumsor‘.
He questioned why the government was able to provide stable electricity to Ghanaians for the past seven years, only for unstable power supply to emerge just months before the general elections.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Otchere-Darko remarked, “There is something mysteriously amiss somewhere. You have managed to keep the lights on for 7 years, even during the height of the economic crisis in 2022. Why now? Still scratching my head…”
Ghana is currently facing challenges in its energy sector, with frequent power outages affecting various parts of the country.
Despite this, the government has maintained that Ghanaians do not need a timetable to help them plan their daily activities.
In the aftermath of the recent passage of an anti-LGBTQ+ bill by parliament, Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emphasized that Ghana remains a sovereign state with cultural norms that demand respect.
Gabby Otchere-Darko underscored that the recently passed anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana mirrors the will of the people, as articulated by members of parliament.
However, he acknowledged the potential political ramifications that led to a culture of silence among MPs who might have opposed the bill.
In a series of tweets, Mr Otchere-Darko affirmed the democratic nature of parliament, emphasizing that the decision, though harsh, enjoys substantial popular support in the country.
He urged transparency from the media and politicians in presenting the pros and cons of imposing stricter penalties against the LGBTQ+ community, recognizing the inevitable consequences of such choices.
Encouraging those who believe the law is constitutionally flawed, Otchere-Darko advocated for legal challenges through proper channels, expressing confidence in the strength of Ghana’s democratic institutions.
He called for respect for the choices made and their consequences, emphasizing Ghana’s status as a sovereign state with cultural norms that demand respect.
Additionally, Otchere-Darko proposed the need to balance traditional family values with tolerance and diversity, cautioning against values based on hypocrisy.
He identified side relationships as a significant threat to family values and questioned the apparent indifference of Members of Parliament towards addressing this issue.
The objective of the bill is to establish proper human sexual rights and uphold Ghanaian Family Values, explicitly prohibiting activities related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT+) individuals.
The bill prescribes penalties, including imprisonment, for engaging in or promoting such activities, awaiting presidential assent to become law.
“Ghana’s parliament, in which is vested the sovereign will of the people, has democratically passed a harsher anti-LGBTQ Bill. Yes, democratically!
“In fact, the threat of being unseated for standing for the rights of gays, etc, certainly created its own culture of silence in the House! But, it is the decision of parliament and one which enjoys huge popular support in the country.
“The world must understand that. But Ghanaians must also understand that it comes with consequences. Choices have consequences. We expect the media and the politicians to be fair to the people by letting them know the pros and cons of this decision to impose stiffer penalties against gays, etc,” he said.
“We also expect those who believe the bill is constitutionally wrong to do what is right and go to court. That is democracy! Our institutions of democracy are still strong and alive. Let’s have faith in our democracy.
“Let’s respect the choices we make and their consequences and believe in the process. Ghana remains a sovereign state, with cultural norms that cannot be wished away but must be respected,” he added.
“Values should not be premised on hypocrisy. That is, I suspect, ungodly. The biggest threat to family values in our society is caused by side chicks and side dudes. They break homes and family values cannot survive in broken homes. But, our MPs don’t care. Do they?” he questioned.
A prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has voiced his concerns regarding the recent approval of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill by the parliament.
He acknowledged that while the bill reflects the democratic will of the people as expressed by parliamentarians, it also creates an environment where potential political repercussions lead to a culture of silence among MPs who might have opposed the bill.
“Values should not be premised on hypocrisy. That is, I suspect, ungodly. The biggest threat to family values in our society is caused by side chicks and side dudes. They break homes and family values cannot survive in broken homes. But, our MPs don’t care. Do they?” he questioned.
In a series of tweets, Otchere-Darko emphasized that the passage of the bill comes with consequences and encouraged fair reporting on the pros and cons of imposing stricter penalties against the LGBTQ+ community.
He urged those who believe the law is constitutionally flawed to challenge it through appropriate legal channels, highlighting the strength of Ghana’s democratic institutions.
While acknowledging Ghana’s cultural norms, Otchere-Darko suggested that there is room to balance traditional family values with tolerance and diversity.
He questioned the prioritization of certain values over others, emphasizing the need for consistency in upholding family values.
The bill aims to safeguard what it defines as proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian Family Values by prohibiting and criminalizing various LGBTQ+ activities. It outlines penalties for individuals engaged in such acts, including imprisonment, and awaits presidential assent to become law.
Otchere-Darko’s commentary adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the bill, emphasizing the importance of respecting democratic processes while encouraging dialogue on the implications of legislative decisions.
“Ghana’s parliament, in which is vested the sovereign will of the people, has democratically passed a harsher anti-LGBTQ Bill. Yes, democratically!

Leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko has waded into the conversation surrounding the controversial Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill which was recently passed by Parliament.
In his view, the activities of the LGBTQ community pose no threat to Ghana’s family values in comparison to the activities of mistresses and paramours of married men and women, also known as side chicks and side dudes.
According to him, “the biggest threat to family values in our society is caused by side chicks and side dudes” as they break homes.
His analysis is that family values cannot thrive in broken homes. In his view, hypocritical individuals have chosen their greater demon, and as such, “our MPs don’t care.”
Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, passed the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill after three years following its introduction.
During Wednesday’s Parliamentary session Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin sought to make amendments to the bill during the second consideration stage citing human right infringement.
However, the Minority rejected his request, prompting the Speaker to push for the third consideration stage,.
Speaker Alban Bagbin put the bill to a voice vote and the ayes had it.
As it stands now, Parliament has tabled the bill to the President’s desk for President Akufo-Addo to assent to the bill to become law.
The anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana. It proposes strict penalties, including imprisonment, for individuals engaged in activities related to homosexuality and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
Additionally, the bill seeks to prohibit the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights, organizations, and events in Ghana.
Prior to its passage, there had been several amendments to the bill. After deliberation, Parliament decided that the minimum custodial sentence has been set at three years, with a maximum of five years for promoters and sympathisers.
Additionally, individuals caught directly engaging in these activities will face a minimum sentence of six months, extendable to a maximum of three years.
Ghana is among many African countries that are working to rid LGBTQ activities in the society. Uganda enacted one of the world’s harshest anti-gay laws in May, which calls for the death penalty for certain same-sex acts.
Following this, the country faced sanctions from international communities. The U.S. imposed a first round of visa restrictions on Ugandan officials in response to the law in June, and the World Bank halted new lending to the country in August.
The concern now is Ghana could face similar sanctions and be blocked from receiving financial aid from countries that uphold LGBTQ rights. But Parliamentarians have noted that Ghana is poised to withstand whatever pro-LGBTQ countries throw at them.
Already, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has described the passage of bill as “profoundly disturbing.”
A portion of the UN Human Rights statement read “I call for the bill not to become law. I urge the Ghanaian Government to take steps to ensure everyone can live free from violence, stigma and discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Consensual same-sex conduct should never be criminalized.”
Arsenal Fan TV conducted an interview featuringGabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a Ghanaian lawyer and lifelong Arsenal supporter, along with musician Stonebwoy, during their visit to Ghana.
In the interview led by Robbie of AFTV, Gabby Otchere Darko provided an update on Thomas Partey’s injury status, assuring fans that the midfielder would return to action soon.
However, some Arsenal fans criticised AFTV for interviewing the lawyer of a player allegedly under investigation. They argued that since the player was facing allegations, it was inappropriate for AFTV, a platform aimed at providing fans with a voice, to feature the player’s lawyer.
Entertainment journalist Olele Salvador clarified the situation, explaining that Arsenal fans pressured AFTV to remove the video after flooding the comment section on YouTube.
“@DTSIntel reveals that a YouTube interview conducted by Robbie Lyle of Arsenal Fan TV (AFTV) with Gabby Otchere Darko, allegedly Thomas Partey’s lawyer, and a conversation with Stonebwoy have been removed by the channel due to severe backlash from some sections of the Arsenal FC fanbase.
“Some fans called for the cancellation of theYouTube channel due to connections with rape allegations against the Ghanaian and Premier League midfielder.
“Initially, a thumbnail used for the video was changed, but it failed to alleviate the pressure, leading to the video being taken down.”
In 2023, Gabby Otchere-Darko disclosed that he serves as the legal representative for both Arsenal and Ghanaian football sensation Thomas Partey.
A fervent supporter of Arsenal, Gabby has been frequently seen alongside the player, both in Ghana and London, and has attended matches at the Emirates Stadium on multiple occasions.
During an interview with Asempa FM in March 2023, discussing how foreign clubs generate revenue from their players, Gabby affirmed his representation of Partey and mentioned the perk of accessing the Emirates Stadium for games, utilising the player’s box in the stands.
“If you go to Emirates, which is my number one stadium and probably I’d add Kumasi Sports Stadium, Baba Yara,. The players, who are paid 100,000 pounds and whatnot, buy boxes. If I visit Emirate, Thomas Partey is my client; I’m his lawyer, so I sit at his box for free,” he said.
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darkois a highly respected solicitor and barrister with qualifications from the UK.
With more than thirty years of experience as an investment lawyer and consultant, he has operated extensively across Europe and Africa.

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed disappointment in the ruling party over its inability to effectively communicate its achievements in recent years and the perceived failure of Ghanaians to recognize the government’s commendable efforts.
Mr Otchere-Darko, in an interview on Asaase Radio on Wednesday, January 31, acknowledged the substantial progress made by the Akufo-Addo-led government in navigating the challenging economic landscape between 2021 and 2022.
He however noted that these achievements he talks off have not been well communicated by the NPP, hence his decision to step back from local politics.
Despite facing severe economic challenges from 2021 till now, he highlighted that various policies implemented by the administration successfully prevented Ghanaians from enduring queues for essential products and services.
“You know when there are crises, there are people who benefit from crisis but I don’t know who benefitted from the crisis of 2022. The Banks suffered, retailers suffered, manufacturers suffered, I mean it was everywhere,” he added.
A stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has disclosed that he has retired from domestic politics.

The parliamentary candidate for Ketu North for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana, has alleged that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko influenced the selection of Chris Hughton as the coach for the Black Stars because of the relationship they share.
His comments came after the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, leaked the $8.5 million budget of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire despite their early exit from the competition.
Edem Agbana, speaking on TV3 on January 30, 2024, noted that he is ready to defend his claim anywhere.
“As we speak, Chris Hughton was selected because of his relationship with Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko. Those of us in football know this and I am saying that if Gabby or anybody doubts this, they can take me anywhere. Some of them were selected because of their relationships with people in government. I am an angry Ghanaian football fan and also a Ghanaian whose tax is being used to pay them,” he alleged.
Edem Agbana also alleged that the government sponsored thousands of its NPP supporters and delegates to travel to Cote D’Ivoire to watch the AFCON matches and paid them $400 each.
He also mentioned that he had the opportunity to send some people to watch the games, but he refused because he was angry and disgusted by the NPP’s actions.
“Before AFCON, I had the opportunity to send about 5 people to also go and watch the game. But I refused because they sent thousands of NPP supporters and delegates and they paid them $400. After the first match, Ghana lost, and the supporters organised a press conference and said that they were going to boycott the second match with Egypt. Before the second match, $400 was paid to NPP supporters and there were 1000s of them all from the NPP. They were selected through the district chief executives to be taken to AFCON.
“They paid all of them at the time the government was unable to pay the capitation grant and finance the school feeding programme,” he added.
Senior partner and co-founder of Africa Legal Associates (ALA), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, clarified in an interview that despite perceptions of him being a politician, he does not identify as one.
He stated that he harbors no aspirations for political office and lacks interest in pursuing a political career.
Instead, Mr. Otchere-Darko expressed a preference for formulating strategies for others to lead, rather than taking on a leadership role himself.
“… I prefer to strategise rather than to be the one to lead. I’m not swayed by titles. I am swayed by getting the job done. A lot of people describe me as a politician, but I am not. I think sometimes my wife doesn’t believe I am not,” he said.
“I have never been a politician. I have been a journalist. I have been a public figure, I believe in a political ideology and I push it. But it doesn’t make me a politician,” Mr Otchere-Darko added.
Relative of President Akufo-Addo and a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has shed light on the reasons behind the President’s decision to maintain the current configuration of his cabinet.
Gabby Otchere-Darko suggests that President Akufo-Addo’s journey to leadership involved facing and overcoming various challenges and struggles.
According to Otchere-Darko, these experiences have prepared the President for his leadership role in the country.
“You know the presidency is a lonely place. You are alone because the buck stops with you and then you have all manner of people giving you all manner of opinions on how things must be done.
You have to make the decision. Akufo-Addo believes more in the American system than in the other systems. When they choose a cabinet minister, he or she is likely to be there for fur years. Instinctively, he is not one that will reshuffle. He prefers stability. That is him distinctively,” he said.
He continued “There is also a matter of where the NPP is. When there was agitation in Parliament…You have majority of one and whenever you take a person out of government is even aggrieved. There are so many issues that he has to deal with because at the end of the day he’s given them assignments, he knows what he wants from them.”
Mr Otchere-Darko asserted that President Akufo-Addo “is not completely against reshuffling, but he is slow to reshuffle.”
He added, “He is stubborn to a fault. Yes, the public calls may be legitimate, and it’s not every call that you listen to. You know what you want from a particular individual.”
“When you’re a man of conviction, sometimes you shouldn’t be quick to react to events. Politically, it may cost you but posterity will judge you and be on your side There are so many times people will push him to do things but he will weigh it. He is a Lawyer and every good Lawyer eventually will a superior argument. Every good lawyer, and they will find their corner and you have to also convince them about the merit but I’m sure if he feels the need for a reshuffle he will do it,” he continued.
Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has emphatically stated that he is not a politician and has never been offered any position by President Akufo-Addo.
In an exclusive interview on Starr FM, the prominent lawyer delved into his personal convictions, clarifying his stance on political positions and shedding light on his relationship with the NPP.
“A lot of people describe me as a politician, but I am not. I have never been a politician; I have been a journalist, a public figure. I believe in a political party ideology and I push it”.
“I go for what I believe in and I do what I believe in, and it may not mean that I am not sensitive to what others think. But once I convince myself that there’s merit in what I want to do or I am doing, I will try to accommodate.
“Akufo-Addo wasn’t generous enough to offer me a position; he knows my stand on that. I was never offered a position,” he explained.
The seasoned lawyer expressed that popularity is often pursued by those seeking competitive political office positions. However, for individuals like himself, convictions and the desire to effect change matter more than popularity.
Clarifying his relationship with the ruling NPP, Otchere-Darko emphasized his support for the party’s ideology, cerebral aspects of politics, and overall strategy.
As the cousin of President Akufo-Addo, Otchere Darko has been subject to speculation, with many perceiving him as a powerful figure who can influence government decisions.
However, he refuted these claims, stating, ”I have influence but I don’t have any power. You’ve come to me a few times to get things done but couldn’t help you. A powerful person makes decisions, and who can make things happen. Someone with influence will try to persuade but at the end of the day, the responsibility is not with me., it is with the person who makes decisions. So that is the person with power.”
“I go for what I believe in and I do what I believe in and it may not mean that I am not sensitive to what others think but once I convince myself that there’s merit in what I want to do or I am doing I will try to accommodate. I think that popularity is for those who seek competitive office position but for the rest of us popularity is not what matters but the conviction and the things you want to do, and that it may not mean that on a scale of what you believe in would suite the wilms, the caprices, preference taste and the idiosyncrasies of many people but if you believe that there is merit in what you doing, I will say that don’t be sensitive to the concerns but don’t let that sway you by.
“ I have said this for a long time (I will not go for political positions) even when I was in school in competitions I will be more a campaign manager, even at university, I will be a campaign manager. I prefer to strategize rather than to be the one. I am not swayed by titles, I am swayed by getting the job.
A prominent corporate lawyer and influential figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has shared insights into the origins of his name “god”.
During a discussion on Starr Fm on Thursday, January 18 2023, he clarified that the title originated from his initials, G.O.D, during his school days when initials were commonly used for labeling personal belongings.
According to him, the transition from “G.O.D” to “dog” occurred due to the playful interpretation of students, who found it mischievous to be associated with the divine term.
Mr Otchere-Darko emphasized that the name is an innocent product of school camaraderie and does not bear any religious implications.
“G.O.D is just my initials, when you are going to school they put your initials on your trunks and stuff, including your underwear. So they wrote G.O.D, now the students thought it was a rascal to be associated with God so they changed it to a dog,” he stated.
Former Vice Chairman of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GCCI), Dr. Adam Bonaa, has raised questions about the rationale behind Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko’s call for a contractor to be lashed due to a slow pace of work.
Dr. Bonaa expressed concern that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, who is a cousin of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, appears to comment on various issues but ignores the significant problem of the government owing a substantial debt to contractors.
“I don’t know whether he is a de facto president and I am not sure what he is saying. Instead of his barefaced statement, he should have known that contractors are owed. He should concentrate on making sure that contractors are paid. If Gabby is the de facto president he should let us know,” he told GhanaWeb in an interview.
On December 26, 2023, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko expressed his dissatisfaction on social media regarding the sluggish progress of the construction of a flyover across the Spintex Road at Flower Pot Junction in Accra.
Despite secure funding for the project, Gabby criticized the contractor’s approach, stating that it resembled part-time charity work. Describing the contractor’s commitment as annoying, he suggested that such behavior warranted a reprimand in the form of lashing.
“If a road contractor deserves to be lashed then it is the one building the Flower Pot Junction flyover across Spintex Road. They work as if it is a part time charity job even though there’s secured funding for the project. Galling!” he wrote in a Facebook post.
In response to Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko’s post, Dr. Adam Bonaa pointed out that the president’s cousin had overlooked the more significant issue of government debt owed to contractors.
Additionally, Dr. Bonaa questioned Gabby’s technical understanding of the progress of the flyover project, emphasizing the importance of considering the broader context in such matters.
“If he comes out to say the contractor is slow, is he an engineer? Does he know what the work entails? Does he have details of the work? Contractors have not been paid. The roads are getting bad and his concentration is on the motorway which is being done and so I just want to know, if he is that de facto president he should let us know.
“Maybe he should also be telling us that he has spoken to the director of urban roads because the motorway falls directly under the urban roads or he has spoken to the minister of roads. Every issue he finds himself there, he finds himself everywhere so I am just asking if he is the de facto president. If he is, he should make sure contractors are paid,” he stated.
Leading member of the New Patriotic Party and a cousin to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed dissatisfaction with the commitment of the contractor working on the flyover across the Spintex Road at the Flower Pot Junction in Accra.
Gabby stated that although funding for the project is secured, the contractor appears to be approaching the project with a lack of dedication, likening it to part-time charity work.
Describing the contractor’s commitment as annoying, Gabby suggested that such behavior warrants criticism.
“If a road contractor deserves to be lashed then it is the one building the Flower Pot Junction flyover across Spintex Road. They work as if it is a part time charity job even though there’s secured funding for the project. Galling!” he wrote in a Facebook post.
The Flower Pot overpass, currently under construction, is part of a $145 million project initiated by the government of Ghana along the Tema Motorway.
While the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion once completed, its ongoing construction has resulted in heavy traffic on the affected stretch.
One of the four recently ousted members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hopeson Adorye, alleges that the party stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, played a significant role in their removal.
Adorye claims that Gabby, along with undisclosed individuals, exerted pressure on the NPP leadership to issue a press statement announcing their expulsion.
In an interview on Okay FM, Adorye disclosed that Gabby even texted him, inquiring about his support for former NPP flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyerematen, citing it as the reason for their dismissal from the party.
“Gabby Otchere-Darko sent me a publication which indicated that he had said I would be voting skirt and blouse and asked me if that was my position. And I said yes, I support Alan because he (Alan) feeds me every month, he pays me every month, so I would support him any day.
“And he (Gabby) said ‘thank you, I just wanted to establish that position’… some few days after this the statement was issued.
“… the statement was supposed to be released on Thursday but they decided to release it on Monday as a birthday present for me. I was told there were calls from Gabby and other people, I don’t want to mention, on Sunday for the statement to be released on Monday. Have you ever seen the NPP General Secretary releasing a statement at 6:00 am before, when there are so many issues in the country,” he said in Twi.
About removal of Hopesop Adorye, others from the NPP:
The NPP leadership announced on Monday, November 20, 2023, that Adorye, along with Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique, are no longer members of the party due to their public endorsement and campaign for Independent presidential candidate, Alan Kyerematen.
In an official statement, the NPP cited the quartet’s “flagrant breach” of the party’s constitution, specifically referring to Articles 3(5) (A)(4) and 3(9)(1). The party emphasized the importance of members abiding by and publicly upholding party decisions, as per Article 3(5) (A) (4).
Furthermore, Article 3(9) (I) states that any member supporting an independent candidate against the party’s officially elected member automatically forfeits party membership.
The NPP urged its members to remain steadfast in supporting the officially elected Presidential Candidate, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, and to collaborate towards achieving victory in the upcoming 2024 polls.

The prevailing narrative regarding the selection of Chris Hughton as the Black Stars coach revolves around claims that the decision was influenced by the government and imposed upon the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party and a relative of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been linked to orchestrating the appointment of Chris Hughton as the head coach of the Black Stars.
However, as Chris Hughton recounts the path that led to his appointment, he seems to absolve the government and, to some extent, Gabby Otchere-Darko from any direct influence.
During an interview on TalkSports, Hughton shared his experience of the discussions that ultimately led to him securing the coaching role, highlighting that the primary deliberations were conducted by the GFA.
“It actually started when I was on holiday in Ghana and we hadn’t done so well in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and the FA changed the coach and they wanted to bring in another coach…,” he said.
“Most people thought I was there for the job but that was not the case. It worked out because I was not working…I was asked if I will want to be a technical advisor for the two big games against Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup playoffs which we won.
“So the fact that we won, they asked me if I would want to continue this role going through to the World Cup because they saw me as an experienced coach and also have a Ghanaian background so I was asked if I could help. My role was to support the head coach and the technical team.
“Post-World Cup, I was asked if I would be the head coach and it didn’t take me a long time to accept,” he added.
His account of events seems to be in line with that of Gabby Otchere-Darko who also denied any involvement in the appointment of Chris Hughton as manager of the senior national team.
“He is a Tottenham fan and I am an Arsenal fan. The president is also a Tottenham fan. These things happen because God works in mysterious ways in putting strange people together.”
The legal practitioner added: “Chris is the choice of the Ghana Football Association and I think it’s a good decision.
“When there is a vacancy anywhere people lobby and at the time, people thought Hughton deserved the job. The GFA also needed someone who knew the team.”
Since his appointment in February this year, Chris Hughton has won one and drawn two of three games played so far.
Lawyer Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, often regarded as a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has clarified that he does not consider himself a politician.
In an interview shared on Facebook on July 28, 2023, with the host Kwahu Ambassador, Odame Agyare, Gabby explained that while he is affiliated with the NPP, this affiliation does not define him as a politician.
Describing himself as a public figure and political strategist, Gabby interjected when the journalist referred to him as a politician, stating, “I’m not a politician.”
“Yes, I’m a public figure; I have been a journalist, I have been on radio. I’ve been a political strategist. I have a political affiliation but I am not a politician,” he reiterated.
Senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has purportedly responded to claims levelled against him over the ‘controversial’ Ameri Plant deal.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, during an interview on Kumasi-based Asanteman FM, claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP, renegotiated the Ameri deal without obtaining consent from the government committee assigned to work on the deal.
Upon confronting Gabby about the matter, Agyarko asserted that he was told to keep quiet because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was already informed about the actions taken by Gabby.
Agyarko recounted that he received a call from Gabby while he was on a flight to the United States, during which Gabby expressed frustration at not being able to reach him.
In a recent post on Facebook, some hours after Mr Agyarko’s comments, Mr Otchere-Darko made a statement accusing an individual of being a liar.
“What aaaa can one say to an energised liar, struggling with constipation?” he wrote.
Due to the ongoing controversy and the lack of official statement on the matter, it is believed that this is Mr Otchere-Darko’s way of responding to Mr Agyarko’s accusations.
According to the former energy minister, when he discussed the matter with President Akufo-Addo, the president inquired whether there was anything inappropriate about Gabby’s actions.
Boakye Agyarko said that he told the president that, “the authority to renegotiate the terms of the Ameri Power Plant doesn’t lie in the hands of Gabby and that the proposal the firm he contracted made had violated all the Cabinet instructions and extended the contract to 20 years.”
Agyarko added that Akufo-Addo agreed with his reasoning but went ahead and asked him to forward the deal Gabby had negotiated to the committee that was set up to renegotiate the deal.
Ameri Plant deal
The Ameri Power Plant project was initiated in response to Ghana’s power generation challenges and the need to increase the country’s electricity supply to meet the growing demand for energy.
The project was awarded to Ameri Group, a Dubai-based energy company. Ameri was tasked with supplying and operating the power plant.
The Ameri deal was signed in 2015 under an emergency power agreement to quickly address the power crisis in Ghana. The agreement was signed during the tenure of former President John Dramani Mahama.
After the initial agreement was signed, the Ameri deal became a subject of controversy in Ghana due to concerns over its cost and terms. There were allegations of overpricing and lack of transparency in the agreement.
Following the change of government in 2017, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, initiated a renegotiation of the Ameri deal. The government sought to amend the terms of the agreement to reduce costs and make it more favorable to Ghana.
The renegotiation process led to the signing of a novation agreement with a new company called Mytilineos International Trading Company in 2018. Under this agreement, Mytilineos took over the management and operation of the Ameri Power Plant from Ameri Group.
The novation agreement was brought before the Ghanaian Parliament for approval, and after heated debates, it was eventually ratified by Parliament in March 2018.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, during an interview on Kumasi-based Asanteman FM, reportedly shared some alleged incidents that occurred during the re-negotiation of the 250 Megawatts Ameri Power Plant.
According to a news report by energynewsafrica.com, Agyarko claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP, renegotiated the Ameri deal without obtaining consent from the government committee assigned to work on the deal.
“I told him I was onboard a flight travelling. Then he (Gabby) told me that he was sending me a document via email so I should check.
“When I arrived safely and went to my hotel room, I opened my email address and saw the document. To my surprise, Gabby had, on the blind side of the Committee set up and approved by the President to renegotiate with Ameri Energy Group, contracted a law firm to engage Ameri Energy Group and completed their negotiation and recommended a certain company to operate the Ameri Power Plant and extended the contract to 20 years.
“I sent Gabby a mail and asked him what authority he had to do that. And I told him Cabinet has given specific instructions to follow and his response was what makes me think that my Boss (President Akufo-Addo) doesn’t know about what he has done…so I kept quiet,” he is quoted to have said by energynewsafrica.com.

Following the defamation lawsuit brought by lawyer Gabby Otchere-Darko against Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, private practice lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has offered to provide free legal services to the professor.
Richard Amarh, another Ghanaian attorney, has also shown interest in assisting his colleague.
“If he calls you and you need hands, I will be there to assist you for free,” Mr Amarh said.
According to Barker-Vormawor, the former environment minister and chair of the inter-ministerial committee on illegal mining as a former heart surgeon saved his brother’s life.
Barker-Vormawor said “My little Brother was born with a hole in heart. He was operated on at 6 months old at the Cardiothoracic Centre Professor Frimpong-Boateng established.
I was in Primary school at the time. One day while my brother was on admission, I walked to the Ghana Commercial Bank and handed them my lunch money. I wanted to deposit it in the Cardio Fund which used to be advertised on TV. I remember the cashiers pinching my cheeks and being so impressed. They had no idea about the trauma in my life at the time.
Professor Frimpong-Boateng saved my brother’s life. If he needs me to represent him in this defamation suit Gabby Othere-Darko has brought against him, I will do it for free. Shalom.”
Private legal practitioner Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has filed a defamation lawsuit against former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng over what he says are defamatory words he wrote against his person.
Leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko (R) and former Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng (L)
The lawyer is seeking GHC10 million as general damages including aggravated and/or exemplary damages.
He is also demanding an apology and a retraction of the words written by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng (defendant) about his person.
The plaintiff is also praying to the court to restrain Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, his servants, agents or assigns through a perpetual injunction from repeating similar or other defamatory words against him.
Former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has claimed that Ghana’s efforts to address illegal mining activities popularly known as “galamsey” came to naught due to actions of some personalities.
According to him, individuals and institutions mandated by the law to protect the environment failed to do so and rather worsened the situation when he was minister.
From 2017 to 2020, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng said institutions such as the Lands Ministry, Minerals Commission and Forestry Commission neglected their responsibilities.
In his report, he revealed some individuals who allegedly caused mayhem to the environment through direct or indirect means.
Below is the list of personalities who are allegedly behind the current state of the country’s environment:
Gabby Otchere-Darko
Mr Otchere-Darko who is a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is alleged to have phoned Professor Frimpong-Boateng to defend a company that was actively destroying the environment, especially the forests and River Offin in the Apaprama and Kobro Forests.
This claim has been rejected by Mr Otchere-Darko, who says he engaged the professor to seek information on his client (Heritage) – a company that had permits to mine.
The late Sir John (Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie)
Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, Prof Frimpong-Boateng said, was actively giving out timber concessions, even in forests reserves for logging.
He also “gave forestry entry permits to mining companies, both large and small scale, including those of foreign nationals for prospecting activities at a time when the President had put a ban on that activity.”
According to him, he referred to Sir John as the greatest danger to the forests in Ghana in the presence of the president.
Charles Owusu
Mr Charles Owusu, referred to as the Director of Operations at the Forestry Commission in the report allegedly helped Sir John acquire Chinese gangs to mine. He was also mining a forest reserve without any permit and destroying forests, farm lands, water bodies and the entire biodiversity.
All members of the IMCIM (except Joseph Kofi Adda and Akwasi Oppong Fosu)
The Inter Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) which was rolled out by President Akufo-Addo in 2017 to fight illegal mining was allegedly abandoned by a number of its members.
According to Prof Frimpong Boateng, the following names contributed to its collapse: Peter Amewu, then Lands and Natural Resources Minister (MLNR); Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, former Chieftaincy & Religious Affairs Minister; Dan Botwe, who was the then Regional Re-Organisation and Development Minister; Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, the previous Monitoring and Evaluation Minister; former Lands Minister, John Peter Amewu; Ambrose Dery, the Interior Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, the Defense Minister and Information Minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.
Joseph Albert Quarm
Joseph Albert Quarm, the former MP for Manso Nkwanta, allegedly used his position as a member of the Minerals Commission to acquire several dozens of large scale concessions in his district, ostensibly for community mining purposes.
“He ended up selling these concessions to private individuals, including party member for two hundred thousand Cedis per concession,” the report added.
Laud Commey, Charles Nii Teiko and Frank Asiedu Bekoe
The trio, said to be appointees at the Jubilee House, are accused of supporting illegal mining activities by interfering with investigations.
Isaac Adjei Mensah
According to Professor Frimpong Boateng, the former Wassa East MP, has been actively mining in the Subri forest for years.
Mr S.K. Boafo
The former Chairman of the Minerals Commission Board is said to have helped sabotage community mining which was conceptualized by the Inter Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM). He reportedly called the MCE of Asante Akim Central to block the commissioning of a community mining site.
Donald Entsuah
Donald Entsuah co-owned the mining company C&J Alyeska, with a Canadian national, Simon Ayman. It is said that his company prevented communities from getting access to forest reserves to proceed to their farms.
Kweku Baako
The journalist is said to have sided with C&J and published unsavory things about Prof Frimpong-Boateng with regards to his work meant to end illegal mining.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah
Mr. Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has been accused of assembling a group of journalists from both NDC and NPP-affiliated media houses at the Forest Hotel in Dodowa to discuss a strategy to bring down Professor Frimpong-Boateng.
The Information Minister has however denied the claims.
“Over the years, I had nothing but great admiration for Prof Boateng’s public spirited works and as an inspirational citizen. I feel gravely offended over the false claims he has made and the hurtful conclusions he has sought to exact about me precisely because of the great esteem in which I have held him,” he is quoted to have said by Ghanaweb.
Yaw Osafo Marfo
The then Senior Minister is accused of shielding one Seth Mantey who was apprehended for unlawful excavator sale.
John Ofori-Atta and Ekow Ewusi
Mr John Ofori-Atta, a former Nation Al Security Coordinator for the Central Region and Mr Ewusi are said to have contracted Seth Mantey, to use his Bank account at the National Investment Bank for what was alleged used for money laundering.
According to President William Ruto, the country has “managed to put together a programme that has taken us away from looking for USD500 million every month to buy our fuel needs, which was slowly snowballing into a crisis.”
Analysing the fact that Kenya would save USD500 million monthly, Mr Gabby Octhere-Darko quizzed “Are we seeing a new and sustainable global paradigm of de-dollarisation?”
Kenya expects to see an appreciation of the shilling as pressure on the dollar declines.
The dollar has in recent months come under severe scrutiny in its position as the main medium of global trade, Brazilian president Lula da Silva recently questioned the ‘might’ of the dollar asking why countries cannot trade in their own currencies.
In the case of Ghana, the exchange rate was a huge issue through last year, along with galloping inflation and high cost of living; the government admitted an economic downturn which pushed it to seek a US$3 billion bailout with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party [NPP], has denied any involvement in Chris Hughton’s selection as Black Stars coach.
According to numerous sources, Otto Addo, who was designated as the interim manager after Addo’s departure, was replaced by the former Premier League manager as a result of the renowned attorney’s influence.
But, Mr. Otchere-Darko denied the allegations in a statement to Asempa FM and stated that the Ghana Football Association [GFA] made the decision on Chris Hughton.
He also mentioned his friendship with Chris Hughton, saying that even though they both support opposing teams in England, they are still close.
“Chris Hughton was brought by the Ghana Football Association not me. Chris and I have been good friends for a long time. He is a Tottenham fan and I am an Arsenal fan. President is a Tottenham fan and I’m an Arsenal but we are good friends. These things happen because God works in mysterious ways of putting strange people together.
“Chris is the choice of the GFA and I think that it I a good decision. When there is a vacancy anywhere, people lobby and at the time, most people thought he deserved the job. GFA also needed someone who knew the team,” he said.
Chris Hughton has signed a 21-month contract as head coach of the Black Stars.
The former Brighton and Newcastle United boss began his Black Stars journey last month, winning his debut game against Angola in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifier before holding the Palancas Negras to a 1-1 drawn game in Luanda in the return game in the qualifiers.
Chris Hughton will hope to steer the side to end the country’s 41 years trophyless jinx in Ivory Coast next year in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffohas reacted to recent criticisms by Mr Gabby Otchere-Darko, a member of the ruling party over her picketing at the Finance Ministry.
Madam Sophia Akuffo last week joined the Pensioner Bondholders Forum to picket at the Finance Ministry to demand their exclusion in government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
She described the Programme as wicked and unlawful while stating how government has been unfair to the aged.
“I find this wicked; I find it disrespectful; I find it unlawful; I find it totally wrong. Period. Because you don’t solve your problems by sacrificing your aged. That’s the last thing you should do especially when we don’t have any services that are specially geared at the comfort and the relief of the aged,” she said.
Reacting to her comments, Mr Otchere-Darko stated that the former Chief Justice failed to understand issues pertaining to the ongoing Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DEEP) before choosing the side of the pensioners.
He noted that some conditions have been reviewed. For instance, government reviewed its first position and settled on a 15% yield maturing in five years instead of the initial 15 years.
“For a former CJ to take up a noble cause such as she did but at such late hour when all was done and for all that publicity, she owed it to herself and her social standing to have understood the issues far better than what she exhibited last Friday. She is bigger than that,” Mr Otchere-Darko tweeted on February 12, 2023.
In a sharp rebuttal, Madam Sophia Akuffo stated that she would not spend time addressing concerns by the NPP stalwart since he is a disturbance.
“Gabby Otchere-Darko can call me paranoid. I don’t care. We are talking about people, we are talking about human beings, we are talking about people who have served this country. I have served well and served hard, active service.
“He doesn’t decide for me what I need to do and what I don’t need to do, I don’t have time for things like that. People like that are not important to me or to my life, and he is a disturbance, that is all that I need to say to that,” she said.
“When you are not a member of government and you are calling yourself a member of government, so that is all I have got to say about this matter,” Justice Sophia Akuffo added.
The Pensioner Bondholders Forum together with the former Chief Justice are back again at the Finance Ministry to rehash their demands.
Member of Parliament (MP) for the Oforikrom Constituency, Dr Emmanuel Marfo, has advised Gabby Otchere-Darko to be cautious in his analysis and interpretation of government’s policy on the economy while engaging the public.
Dr Emmanuel Marfo noted that the founder of the Danquah Institute, who is also a leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is painting a picture which indicates his unofficial involvement in the running of the economy.
Mr Gabby Otchere-Darko, who has actively been commenting on issues pertaining to the economy in recent times, has called on individual holders, who are presently contesting the government’s decision to include their investment in its Domestic Debt Exchange (DDE) programme, to give into the government’s plan.
(1) Ghana is in a very difficult place. What we are seeing with the mobilisation of agitation on individual bondholders poses a real and serious risk worse than what we witnessed when opposition to E-Levy succeeded in derailing an already shaky macroeconomic situation from 2021.
“Ghana is in a very difficult place. What we are seeing with the mobilisation of agitation on individual bondholders poses a real and serious risk worse than what we witnessed when opposition to E-Levy succeeded in derailing an already shaky macroeconomic situation from 2021”, he tweeted on Sunday.
He further noted that Ghana would not be able to procure a credit facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should government fail to implement its debt restructuring programme.
“The debt exchange programme is voluntary for individual bondholders but a very necessary evil for our economy. Its success is critical to restoring macroeconomic stability, securing an IMF prog. It hits those of us holding bonds very hard. A straight no to it is no solution!”, portions of the tweet further stated.
(2) The debt exchange programme is voluntary for individual bondholders but a very necessary evil for our economy. Its success is critical to restoring macroeconomic stability, securing an IMF prog. It hits those of us holding bonds very hard. A straight no to it is no solution!
He added that the value of bonds by individual bondholders who refuse to subscribe to the DDE programme would be “potentially worthless.”
(4) I'm sorry but we have to face the hard/painful truths. We ain't sitting pretty. Our focus must be on how the burden to individual bondholders may be possibly eased; but not to take the hardline position of simply saying no to particpation. It will come back to hit us harder!
According to Dr Marfo, Mr Otchere-Darko’s remarks, either accurate or incorrect, “do more harm than good.”
“Can someone advise Gabby to know his labelled niche in this administration and to be circumspect in his commentary on government policy on the economy. They do more harm than good. It’s not about whether he is right or wrong, it’s about his perceived backdoor involvement in the crisis. He better keep mute; it helps the NPP!” the MP wrote.
This is not the first time Mr Otchere-Darko has relayed striking information on the status of some government policies that have a huge impact on the economy.
In June 2022, he disclosed that the government had been unable to reach its revenue target with regards to the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) implemented in May that year by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
“What options are open to the government? The question should rather be: what option, if adopted, will re-inject investor confidence in our economy? Even if we find the $3-5 billion required, will that help? E-levy which was to have given us some 600m by now has done less than 60m,” he said in a tweet on Monday, June 27.
As part of its functions, the Ministry of Finance is to establish and disseminate performance-oriented guidelines and deploy efficient financial management information systems, as well as ensure commitment to transparency, probity and accountability in the management of financial resources.
Convenor of the Ghana Individual Bondholders Forum, Senyo Hosi, has rebuffed claims that the rejection of the domestic debt exchange programme by individual bondholders would bring untold economic hardship to the country and would potentially make their bonds worthless.
According to him, data available from the Finance Ministry demonstrates that such claims are false and merely meant to create a state of fear and panic to get bondholders to sign unto the ongoing debt exchange programme.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he explained that signing onto the debt exchange programme would rather make ones bonds potentially worthless and irredeemable.
“Please anybody who tells you [that] is a liar, is uneducated, has no skills, is not worth any attention if you’re an individual bondholder. 1+1 can’t be 3. It can’t be one and half. It’s not Senyo, this one is just math, it’s science, it’s finance, it’s economics and again it’s common sense,” he retorted.
His comments follow a solemn plea from NPP stalwart, Gabby Otchere-Darko on Sunday who said that even though the terms of the debt exchange programme will affect individual bondholders, it is a necessary step which must be taken to salvage the economy.
“Ghana is in a very difficult place. What we are seeing with the mobilisation of agitation on individual bondholders poses a real and serious risk worse than what we witnessed when opposition to E-Levy succeeded in derailing an already shaky macroeconomic situation from 2021,” his tweet read.
“If the no-compromise opposition to it wins, what then has been achieved? It may lead to national debt default.
“So what then happens to the value of your bonds after! Potentially worthless. If participation is low, we jeopardize resolving the economic crisis and hardships,” he added.
However, explaining the risk of signing onto the government’s new bonds under the debt exchange programme, Senyo Hosi noted that bondholders were much safer holding on to their current bonds rather than discarding them for the new ones.
He said, “with bonds right now your investment is retained because that’s your expectation. You went in for 16%, you’re getting your 16%, no problem. Secondly if you take an ESLA or you take a Daakye bond, the source of the revenue is secured.
“The ESLA is even governed by British law, English law; it’s not even governed by Ghana law. Anytime you buy petrol, the money to pay your ESLA flows in. You’re already taxed to pay off the bond.”
He further explained that while bondholders who are yet to sign discard their old bonds for the new bonds have the right to sue government and receive reparations from the state should the government default on payment, under the debt exchange programme, the government is granted immunity.
So while you can sue government, it will merely be considered an academic exercise as no reparations will be received.
“Then you have in these current bonds GoG, Government of Ghana has no immunity. So your rights are fully enforceable. If government refuses to pay, you can sue them and suing them is not just enough because it can also be an academic exercise. What’s most important is its enforceability where you can actually now attach an asset. You can execute your judgement.
“Under you current bond framework you can do that, under the new one you can’t do that. You can sue them but they’re making you waive your right and granting them immunity against you attaching any asset of government that is for a public purpose. Tell me which asset of government is not for a public purpose. Which asset of government is for private purpose? Then you’re a thief,” he said.
He noted that government coercing bondholders to waive their rights to execute judgment against them in case of default under the debt exchange programme significantly renders the new bonds worthless as successive governments could at will restructure debt repayments without consequence.
“So you could lose up to 70% of your investment and it could be more if you really look at the real value of your money,” he said.
