2025 Security Service medicals: Over 6k recruits disqualified over drug use, mental health issues – Interior Minister

More than 6,000 of the over 100,000 applicants who took part in the medical screening stage of the ongoing security services recruitment failed the exercise, according to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, May 23, the Minister noted that factors such as drug use and mental health conditions contributed to their disqualification.

He explained that more than 4,000 applicants failed the drug tests, and about 2,000 others were flagged for mental health issues.

“We have over 100,000 people who went through the medicals. Because of the large numbers, and because of what we have observed within the services, we introduced additional checks including mental health assessments and drug tests. Interestingly, over 4,000 people failed the drug test, and we have over 2,000 who also failed due to mental health conditions,” he said.

This year’s medical exercise included drug testing and mental health assessments, aside the usual the usual physical and laboratory checks. The recruitment exercises into the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Immigration Service began in November, 2025.

The exercise was grouped into five stages; online application, documentation, body selection, aptitude test and medical examination.

In March, government made a U-turn regarding the number of personnel to be recruited into the country’s security services.

Originally, 20,000 personnel were expected to be recruited, but this has now been increased to 40,000. These recruits will be deployed gradually from now until 2029.

President Mahama, together with heads of security agencies, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and Acting Defence Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, reviewed and approved the decision on Monday, March 16.

According to a press release by the presidency indicated, “Following a briefing on the process, the President has directed that the number of men and women to be recruited to the various security agencies should be increased from twenty-thousand (20,000) to forty thousand (40,000) over a four year period”.

Present at the meeting were the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the President, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, National Security Coordinator, Inspector General of Police, Director General Prisons, Director General Fire Service, Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service and the Director General of the Narcotics Control Commission.

Meanwhile, the government’s ongoing recruitment into Ghana’s security services continues to dominate discussions in Parliament and among scores of Ghanaians. However, the Minority in parliament has pressed the government to refund about GH¢113 million of registration fees collected from applicants who failed to progress to the medical screening stage.

Most applicants were dropped from the recruitment process, which began last year, after failing an online aptitude test organised by the government.

The online test which was confronted with a lot of challenges, according to reports, was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

In a media engagement on Wednesday, March 11, the Interior Minister, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, revealed that the government will only employ only 5,000 individuals out of the 105,000 applicants who have made it to the last stage.

He further disclosed that about 500,000 applications were submitted by Ghanaian youth. “Are you going to allow over 400,000 people to go and do medicals when you know you have space for only 5,000? How fair are you to the people? You need to devise a method to slow down the numbers and have a reasonable figure.

“So at 65, as we speak, we still have 105,000 that have qualified for medicals when in actual sense the total number that we can now take after medicals is 5,000,” he added.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, March 10, Mr. Muntaka explained that authorities set the pass mark for the recruitment examinations at 65 to control the number of candidates progressing to the medical stage.

Reacting to the Interior Minister’s revelation, the Minority of Parliament has called the entire recruitment process a Ponzi scheme to extort from suffering youth.

The caucus has questioned why the government would accept applications from half a million persons when it intends to employ a small number.

With immediate effect, the Minority in Parliament has pressed the government to refund monies collected from the affected applicants.“Already, we have a national security threat and unemployment on our hands. You promised them jobs. You didn’t add any conditions. Then you turn around, you politically expand the age limit from twenty-five to thirty-five, signaling that there is more room and more access, more financial clearance, which was a lie.

“You knew from the very beginning you were recruiting only 5,000, and yet you did all this to lure half a million people, took their money, milked them GH¢113 million cedis and over, only to turn around yesterday, after you have knocked them out by technology and internet disruptions from the aptitude test,” he said.

The development has left scores of Ghanaians, particularly affected applicants, criticising the government. Some unsuccessful applicants say they answered the questions without engaging in examination malpractice, yet failed the test, while others who allegedly outsmarted the system have qualified.

Prior to the test, the Ministry of the Interior Ghana warned applicants against cheating, stating that the system used for the online aptitude test had been designed to detect and disqualify individuals who attempted any form of malpractice.

Some applicants have also recounted how they purchased recruitment forms for multiple security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Immigration Service, but were denied the opportunity to proceed after failing the aptitude test.

Under the recruitment guidelines, applicants who fail the aptitude test are automatically eliminated from the process, regardless of the number of forms purchased, since only one test is taken for all the security agencies. Others have also disclosed that although they initially qualified for the test, they were later disqualified after revisiting their recruitment portals.

Despite the frustrations expressed by many disqualified applicants, the Interior Minister, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, maintains that the recruitment exercise has been free and fair, unlike those organised by previous governments.

He explained that the government introduced a third-party aptitude test with a pass mark of 65% as a measure to manage the large number of applicants.

Meanwhile, some grassroots members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were disqualified from the process have expressed disappointment in the government. They claim the administration has turned its back on them despite their role in helping the party return to power.

However, the Minister indicated that the recruitment process will not end this year. According to him, applicants who successfully pass the medical examination but are unable to secure placement this year will be considered for employment in the following year.

“I know a lot of young people may be disappointed, but they should exercise restraint as this is not going to be the first and last recruitment that the government is going to have,” the Minister noted.

Recruitment into Ghana’s security services has frequently been criticised as a process susceptible to corruption, with reports alleging that some individuals pay substantial sums of money to secure positions within agencies such as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Immigration Service.

Ghanaian soldier dies during counter-terrorism drill in Binduri

A physical training instructor with the 6th Infantry Battalion, Private Adotey has lost his life during a counter-terrorism training exercise in the Upper East Region, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has confirmed.

Breaking the unfortunate news on Wednesday, May 20, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu disclosed that, Private Adotey who was identified with number 218079 died died while attempting to rescue fellow officers in an explosion during an operation in the Binduri Forest in the Binduri area.

He added, “You have demonstrated throughout this exercise and operation, however, on a sad note, and also taking note of the occupational risks and hazards as you are seated wearing this uniform and the ultimate price we sometimes pay in service to our dear nation.

But it was an unfortunate incident that eventually led to the death of 218079 Private Adotey, a physical training instructor at the 6th Infantry Battalion”.

The Exercise Storm Shield was conducted across Bawku, Pusiga, and Binduri to enhance troops’ preparedness in countering terrorism and violent extremism.

Some Ghanaian soldiers have lost their lives, and others have been injured in the line of duty. In March, two Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) got seriously injured following an attack in southern Lebanon.

The attack occurred on March 6, 2026, targeting members of the Ghanaian Battalion deployed under the UN peacekeeping mission.
In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has demanded an immediate investigation into the matter while the government strongly condemned the attack.

“The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Ghana formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following the attack on the Ghanaian Battalion serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Southern Lebanon on 6th March 2026, which left two Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured.”

“The Government of Ghana has called for a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on personnel deployed in the service of international peace and security,” Mr Ablakwa said in a statement dated March 6, 2026.

While describing the incident as unacceptable, the government stressed that United Nations peacekeeping personnel must be safeguarded as they perform their duties of maintaining international peace and security.

Officials also insisted that those behind the attack be traced and brought to justice, noting that the incident amounts to a serious breach of international law and violates the protections accorded to UN peacekeeping forces.

The government also reassured the wounded soldiers and their families that efforts will be made to secure justice while discussions with UN authorities continue to ensure improved protection for Ghanaian troops on international peacekeeping missions.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu also condemned the incident, stating that no nation or group should be permitted to assault non-combatants without facing consequences.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu indicated that the attack on the Ghanaian contingent serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was unacceptable and must be examined by the United Nations.

“No country is allowed to behave with such impunity and set about attacking non-combatants, people who have not shown any aggression and who are in fact there to keep the peace,” he said.

He further pointed out that Ghanaian soldiers participating in UN peacekeeping operations have earned global recognition and have been involved in such missions for many years to help maintain peace and stability in conflict zones.

“They are people who are there to keep the peace and they have done this for decades. It is an internationally recognised activity that they are engaging in.The activities do not pose any threat whatsoever to anybody within the region to warrant such an attack. As the country whose troops have been at the receiving end of this attack, we need to take it very seriously. That is why we have lodged this formal complaint,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu expressed.

Bright Simons, Honorary Vice President of IMANI Africa, has also expressed worries about the credibility and future sustainability of the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

In an interview on Newsfile on Joy News on Saturday, Mr Simons criticised the attack but noted that it also brings into focus important concerns about the effectiveness of the peacekeeping operation.

He explained that UNIFIL was initially established to stop further Israeli military advances into Lebanese territory and to facilitate the disarmament of Hezbollah fighters. Nevertheless, he said these central goals have not been achieved.

“The action is utterly condemnable, and I agree with everything that has been said by the preceding speakers. But we must also ask fundamental questions about the credibility and viability of this particular UNIFIL contingent,” he stated.

The mission functions under the provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah after the 2006 conflict.

The resolution directed both parties to halt hostilities and proposed the disarmament of Hezbollah, while assigning UN peacekeepers the responsibility of assisting the Lebanese Armed Forces in maintaining stability in the area.

However, IMANI Africa maintains that the main provisions of the resolution have not been fully carried out. Israeli forces have continued operations in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah remains armed and active.

Mr Simons observed that stopping Israeli incursions would largely rely on pressure from the United States, which he believes has not demonstrated strong readiness to enforce such actions.

He also raised doubts about whether any international actor other than Iran has the influence to push for the disarmament of Hezbollah. Under these circumstances, IMANI Africa questioned the ongoing purpose of UN peacekeepers in the region.

Mr Simons further pointed out that the mission was already expected to conclude by the end of September, heightening concerns about the dangers peacekeepers may still encounter before then.

“What exactly are UN forces still doing there as auxiliaries of the Lebanese army, which was their original mandate?” he asked.
Following the recent attack on Ghanaian soldiers, IMANI Africa has advised the government to consider speeding up Ghana’s withdrawal from the mission.

It described the situation as “double unfortunate,” warning that UNIFIL may no longer represent a credible international peacekeeping force under the current geopolitical realities.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that it will continue to monitor developments closely while engaging with relevant UN authorities regarding the incident.

  • Gratuity arrears for retired military personnel to be settled on Friday – GAF

Gratuity arrears for retired military personnel to be settled on Friday – GAF

The retired personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) will receive payment of long-standing gratuity arrears under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129 on Friday, February 25, following government approval.

Gratuity is a lump-sum payment given to an employee when they leave a job, usually as a form of financial reward for long service or retirement.

A total of two hundred and thirty-eight (238) officers and two thousand, one hundred and fifty-five (2,155) retired soldiers are expected to receive the gratuity arrears, which date back five years.

The payments will be made in four installments from February 2026 to December 2027 under the new gratuity formula.

The new development brings closure to a matter that had remained unresolved since 2020 and ensures that affected personnel and all others who will retire subsequently receive their full entitlements at the correct rate.

This was revealed by the Department of Public Relations at General Headquarters, Burma Camp, the Ghana Armed Forces, in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 25.

The statement said, “Government has approved and will commence payment of gratuity arrears for all retired military personnel under the implementation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129. The first tranche will be released by close of business on Friday, February 27”.

In a related development aimed at boosting welfare for another branch of the nation’s uniformed services, the Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, announced in 2025 a GHC 100,000 insurance package for personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) who sustain permanent injuries in the line of duty.

The scheme also provides GH₵50,000 for non-permanent injuries, GH₵100,000 for deaths in active service, and GH₵50,000 for natural deaths while in service.

The announcement was made during his address as Special Guest of Honour and Reviewing Officer at the passing-out ceremony of 1,658 recruits (Course 55) on June 20 at the Fire Academy and Training School in Jamestown, Accra.

Hon. Muntaka emphasized that the insurance package is designed to boost morale and ensure financial security for officers injured or killed in their line of duty.

“This is just the beginning. We are committed to improving welfare packages, logistics support, and working conditions for our gallant fire officers, whose sacrifices often go unnoticed,” he stated.

The ceremony marked the successful completion of 28 weeks of rigorous training, covering theoretical instruction and practical skills in fire science, first aid, fire prevention, electrical safety, breathing apparatus operations, and more.

Four recruits were recognized for exceptional performance: Samuel Kenneth Ayibontey as Overall Best Recruit, Anamfo Gerrard Adombila as Best in Academics, Emmanuel Addo Ahunu as Best in Foot Drill, and Anita Awagah with the Commandant’s Award for Best Conduct.

Hon. Muntaka encouraged the new officers to uphold values of integrity, courage, and selflessness, emphasizing that their journey had just begun.

He also highlighted challenges facing the Service, including prank calls to emergency lines and the need for public cooperation in fire prevention.

The graduation of Course 55 represents a significant milestone in modernizing the GNFS. With enhanced training, improved welfare support, and growing public awareness, Ghana’s firefighting force is better equipped than ever to respond effectively to emergencies and protect communities nationwide.

Together, these developments the disbursement of long-delayed gratuity arrears for retired GAF personnel and the introduction of a comprehensive insurance package for GNFS officers underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare, security, and recognition of Ghana’s uniformed services.

  • Defence Minister presents contract agreements for four helicopters and presidential jet to Parliament

Defence Minister presents contract agreements for four helicopters and presidential jet to Parliament

The government announced plans on November 13 to purchase three new helicopters for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and also purchase one new jet for the president, just a few days after the investigation report on the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight gallant Ghanaian men.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, December 3, the Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, laid before the house the contract agreement of the government and the companies from whom the purchase will be made.

The Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, who was presiding, referred them to the joint committees of Defence and Interior for consideration and report. He also directed it to the leadership of the Finance Committee for consideration and report to the House.

The first is the contract agreement between the government of Ghana, represented by the Ministry of Defence, and Airbus Helicopters (SAS), France, for an amount of €125.97 million for the supply of one H160 and three H175 helicopters for the GAF.

The second is the sale and purchase contract agreement between the government of Ghana and Dassault.

Following the approval of the GH₵1.70 billion budget for the jet and helicopters, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who also doubles as the North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, addressed the house saying that, the Minority could be certain that if President John Dramani Mahama “starts or even attempts” to charter ultra-luxury jets like his predecessor did, “you will certainly hear my voice”.

During the erstwhile government’s tenure, President Akufo-Addo announced his intention to purchase a new jet, which was heavily criticised by Ablakwa as insensitive, given the country’s hardships and poor financial state at the time. He embarked on media tours and made several statements as to why purchasing a presidential jet was not right at the time.

Consequently, following his silence on the jet the president is set to purchase, the Minority has accused him of double standards, citing that his strong stance against Akufo-Addo’s plan was politically motivated and far from objective.

In response to them, he said, “You are not hearing my voice now because what I used to complain about is not happening”.

According to him, a comparison of the budget the Akufo-Addo-led administration presented and that of what Ato Forson has at the Finance Ministry, the former government’s budget could have bought Ghana “ a brand new jet”.

“So you should be commending me, and you should actually be apologising to the people of this country that if President Akufo-Addo had listened to the honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, we would not have wasted resources as we have done. “

“President Mahama has now put us on a prudent path where instead of just chattering and wasting taxpayer resources, he is rather going to engage in an investment that will serve the Ghana Armed Forces well,” he said.

Supporting the approval of the budget estimates for the Foreign Affairs Ministry earlier, the Second Deputy Minority Leader, Habib Iddrisu, said the Minority was of the view that the ministry should be given enough resources.

He said the Foreign Minister asked for over GH₵3 billion as the budget for his ministry in 2026, yet he was only given less than 50 percent of what he asked for.

“But the majority of the money, over GH₵13 billion, is going to be used to buy four helicopters and two luxury jets- one long reach and one medium range- and you have said nothing about it.

“But you were very vocal that the President is flying first class, but we think they should cancel the money for the four helicopters and the two luxury jets that they will buy and give the money to the Foreign Affairs Minister,” he said.

Accusing Mr Ablakwa of being very quiet on the purchase of the helicopters and presidential jets, Mr Iddrisu drew the attention of the Foreign Affairs Minister that “anytime he ever finds himself here in 2029, he should know in future prosperity will catch up with him”.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s presidential jet touched down on Monday, November 10. The jet, France’s Dassault Falcon Service, had been in  Le Bourget, France, for the past month for its mandatory 24-month and 1,600-flying-hour inspection since March. The Falcon 900EX EASy with registration number 9G-EXE remained grounded, with new faults discovered each time it was scheduled to be dispatched back home.

However, Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, in an X (formerly Twitter) post on Sunday, November 16, shared that the jet had arrived in Accra, Ghana.

Parts of his post read: “Ghana’s presidential jet has been delivered safely back into the custody of the Ghana Air Force since Monday, the 10th of November. Exactly 8 months after it was sent to the Dassault Falcon Service MRO base at Paris Le Bourget (PLB).”

He reiterated Mr Brogya’s explanation in Parliament earlier that the faults that were detected required manufacturer-level intervention and prolonged the maintenance schedule, as the repairs could only be executed at that specific Dassault-authorised site.

“Whilst at PLB, it underwent a MANDATORY 24-month and 1600-hour technical inspection. During this extensive inspection, severe defects affecting the fuel tank and a turbofan were discovered, triggering prolonged repairs that could only be done with manufacturer assistance at that specific Dassault facility.”

Following this, “all the complex repairs, final tests (including leak tests, engine ground runs, and acceptance flights) have been completed. The long delay in completing the repairs was due to some apparent difficulty sourcing certain OEM-certified spare parts. The aircraft has, however, been given the all clear by DFS now.”

However, the Bureau of Public Safety (BSP) has called for an independent certification and audit into the airworthiness of Ghana’s presidential jet, which has reportedly returned from maintenance.

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) in Ghana is a non-profit civil society organisation that advocates for public safety, security, health, and environmental protection.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, November 16, the Executive Secretary of BSP, Nana Yaw Akwada warned that despite the safety confirmations and certifications by the French aircraft company that conducted the maintenance works on the the Falcon 900EX EASy with registration number 9G-EXE, there is a need for an independent and fully transparent certification before declaring the aircraft safe for presidential use.

“It is good news to hear that the jet is back, but before we can make any concrete statement on its safety or otherwise, it’s very important that we have an independent certification body to let us understand objectively what was established in relation to what the Ghana Armed Forces communicated to us,” he said.

GAF shuts all recruitment centres in Accra except El-Wak Stadium

All Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment centres in Accra have been temporarily shut down except the El-Wak Sports Stadium. According to a notice shared by GAF, the closure, which will begin today, Monday, 24 November, has, however, directed all potential recruits yet to be screened to report to the El-Wak Stadium centre.

The notice read: “GAF Recruitment Update: All recruitment centres in Accra for the 2025/2026 exercise, except El-Wak Sports Stadium, will be closed on Monday, 24 November 2025. All potential recruits yet to be screened should report to El-Wak Sports Stadium for the continuation of documentation and body selection.”

The Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region, which was temporarily suspended two weeks ago, resumed on Thursday, November 20. President John Dramani Mahama, on Wednesday, November 12, ordered a halt to the exercise in response to a stampede that disrupted the screening process held at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

All six potential recruits who tragically lost their lives in the aftermath of the event are female. The unfortunate incident also left several others in critical condition.

The tragedy occurred as thousands of young Ghanaians who had thronged the stadium forced their way through the entry points in an attempt to secure enlistment into the Service.

To avert another possible tragedy, the Minister revealed that his ministry had put in additional safety measures to ensure a smooth and seamless process. To prevent a recurrence, five separate screening centres have been established to manage the flow of applicants, and only 1,200 applicants are expected to be screened daily.

Speaking to the media, Director-General of Public Affairs at the GAF, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, noted, “The numbers that will be at El-Wak will not be more than 1,200. This is because we are going to have two groups there, each made up of 600 potential recruits”.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have announced 7 new centres in addition to the original screening centre, El-Wak Stadium.

In a statement dated November 17, and signed by Acting Director General, Public Relations Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, GAF explained that “…as part of measures to ensure a seamless process, the screening will be done at 8 sub-centres within the following 5 locations.

“El-Wak Stadium (two centres), Nicholson Park at Burma Camp (two centres), the Air Force Base at Burma Camp, TRADOC in Teshie (two centres), and the Eastern Naval Command in Tema.

All qualified applicants will receive an SMS informing them of their designated screening centres, reporting dates, and batch assignments, urging everyone to strictly adhere to the instructions.

“All qualified applicants in batches of 600 persons will each receive an SMS specifying their reporting dates, batches and designated centres. They are also encouraged to check on the recruitment portal for updates. Applicants are strongly advised to strictly adhere to these instructions”, parts of the statement read.

GAF has also given a helpline that will assist applicants who may face any challenges and require assistance in their recruitment process.

“Any qualified applicant who does not receive a text message by Thursday, 20 November 2025, should call the helpline on Mobile Number 0256405104 or WhatsApp on 0256405154 for assistance. Applicants can also verify from the recruitment portal”, it continued.

To prevent congestion and overcrowding at the centres, parents, guardians or relatives are advised to stay away from the centres.

“Families and friends are cautioned not to accompany potential recruits to the screening centres to reduce congestion. Non-applicants will not be allowed entry to any of the centres”.

GAF also announced a new recruitment team, including “Commodore F.A. Nyarko, Colonel F. Kusi-Darko, and Colonel G.B. Eduah, heading Human Resources, Manpower, and Information Technology, respectively.

“Meanwhile, the Board of Inquiry set up to investigate the circumstances leading to the stampede is in progress”, the statement added.

Captain Arhin assured the public that anyone found responsible will face sanctions. She extended sympathies to the bereaved families and confirmed that injured applicants will continue to receive free medical care at the 37 Military Hospital until fully recovered. A special recruitment package will also be provided to them and the affected families.

“The Ghana Armed Forces continues to count on the cooperation of the general public in this endeavour,” the statement concluded.

The stampede led to the loss of six lives; all females and the injuries of about twenty -right others. Following this, the country’s defence service has announced Thursday, November 20, as the new date for the process.

    How did the stampede happen?

It all started when thousands of Ghanaian youth, hoping to gain entry into the military, thronged the stadium in the early hours of Wednesday. However, even before the screening exercise could begin, the unfortunate happened when a surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed toward the gates.

The uncontrolled crowd movement caused people to fall and be trampled, resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries.

In a swift response, the government set up a Board of Inquiry to probe the El-Wak Stadium stampede. The Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, chaired by Hon. James Agalga, has announced it will conduct its own probe into the incident.

Since the incident government has announced several changes in the recruitment process of the other internal security services (Ghana Police Service, GNFS, Prisons and Customs Service), which officially begins today. The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, during a media address on Friday, November 14, explained that a new system “will automatically allocate applicants to screening centres and time slots….If you apply from Tamale, for example, and there are three centres… the system will automatically assign you to one of them and indicate whether you are scheduled for the morning or afternoon session.”

According to him, the new recruitment system will be a centralised, fully digital e-recruitment portal. It is designed to harmonise hiring across all security agencies under the Ministry of the Interior, eliminate paper-based processes, and allow applicants to complete the entire recruitment process using their mobile phones, either via the short code given by their outfit or via the portal.

“The application process will be fully online, utilising a secure portal capable of handling large volumes of applications efficiently. The portal is user-friendly and accessible on smartphones, tablets, and computers,” he noted.

A stampede that occurred during the recruitment screening of the Ghana Armed Forces on Wednesday, November 12, led to the suspension of the process. The incident resulted in the deaths of six people; all females, and left about twenty-eight others injured.

This comes to replace an old system where the recruitment process was manual and decentralised. Applicants had to physically choose or travel to screening centres themselves, often leading to overcrowding, long queues, and even dangerous stampedes. Assignments were not automated; instead, they were managed by human administrators, with candidates sometimes directed to centres based on availability or their own preference.

Meanwhile, applicants who suffered injuries from the El-Wak stampede remain hospitalised at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

President Mahama visited the victims on the day of the incident and shared on his official X handle (formerly Twitter) to express his condolences to the families of the applicants who lost their lives in the stampede.

“He said, “I visited the 37 military hospital this afternoon to check on our young men and women who were injured earlier this morning following a stampede at the Elwak Stadium recruitment centre, where thousands of potential military recruits had gathered for a selection exercise”.

Also, the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, visited the victims on Saturday, November 15, accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Gyemfi, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong.

The Vice President spent time at the various wards, interacting with each of the injured and offering words of comfort. She assured them of the government’s full support as they undergo treatment and recovery. Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended the medical personnel at the 37 Military Hospital for their swift intervention following the incident and the emergency staff for their professionalism and dedication.

“We are deeply grateful for the tireless work of the medical team. Their commitment at this very difficult moment has been truly commendable,” she said.

Earlier, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, donated GH¢100,000 to support the medical treatment of victims injured in the El-Wak Sports Stadium stampede.

El-Wak Stampede: Gov’t to offer automatic slots for family members of killed potential recruits

Families of the prospective applicants who lost their lives in the El-Wak stampede, which occurred on Wednesday, November 12, in Accra, have been allowed to present names of relatives who qualify to be absorbed into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), officials announced.

It all started when thousands of Ghanaian youth, hoping to gain entry into the military, thronged the stadium in the early hours of Wednesday. However, even before the screening exercise could begin, the unfortunate happened when a surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed toward the gates.

The uncontrolled crowd movement caused people to fall and be trampled, resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries. claimed the lives of six (6), all females and over twenty-eight (28) were left injured, with some confirmed to be in a critical condition.

During a visit to one of the bereaved families at Eyan Maim in the Central Region, the Deputy Defence Minister, Ernest Brogya Genfi, revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has instructed that each affected family be given an automatic slot.

“Due to what happened, the recruitment in Accra has been suspended by the President, so that we will ensure that measures are put in place to avoid a repeat of such incidents.”

“The President has sent us to inform you that the State will stand with the families in the burial and funeral arrangements for the families. The President has also asked us to inform you that all those who wanted to wear the military uniform but died in the process, their families should present a replacement for those people to be absorbed into the military. So, the authorities representing the government in the region will engage you in that regard for the family to decide on who can be enrolled into the military.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, described the incident as deeply heartbreaking and affirmed that the state will ensure all six victims receive befitting burials in honour of their service.

“The government wants you to know that you’re not in this alone; the whole nation is affected. Your children also belong to the State. The President wants you to know that he’s standing with you in this period of mourning. You’re not alone. His Excellency John Mahama stands with you through this painful period.”

The arrangements in place for the deceased and the injured ones, the President says, he’s standing with all of them. Those who require a befitting burial, he will stand with the support of the family to give them a befitting burial. And those who are also recovering at 37 Military Hospital, the government is bearing all the cost until such time that they fully recover.”

The GAF preliminary inquiry indicates that the stampede was triggered when applicants breached security protocols and rushed through gates ahead of schedule.

The government’s gesture seeks to honour the memories of those who died in pursuit of serving their country and to reassure families of its commitment to their welfare.

During a visit to the victims of the stampede at the 37 Military Hospital on Thursday, November 13, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, donated GH¢100,000 to support the medical treatment of victims injured in the El-Wak Sports Stadium stampede.

Mr Bagbin, who was with a delegation of Parliament, explained that the gesture is Parliment’s way of showing solidarity with the affected families and help ease their financial burdens.

He said the gesture was to help alleviate the financial burden on the victims and demonstrate Parliament’s solidarity with affected families.

The Speaker also expressed grave concern about the recurring challenges associated with public sector recruitment exercises, emphasising the need for urgent reforms to make the process safer and more efficient.

President John Dramani Mahama described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation,” while extending his condolences to the bereaved families.

According to him, “The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition.”

GAF recruitment stampede: All six deceased are female – President Mahama

All six potential recruits who tragically lost their lives in the stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, were female.

President John Dramani Mahama made the revelation at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi. The President described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation,” while extending his condolences to the bereaved families.

According to him, “The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition.”

Reports indicate that the incident occurred as thousands of young Ghanaians thronged the stadium, forcing their way through entry points in an attempt to secure enlistment into the Service. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue, while several others are receiving emergency treatment.

The Ashanti Region has also reported that at least five potential recruits reportedly collapsed during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 11. One person is in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Emena Hospital in Oforikrom Municipality, according to reports, while four others are at the Ashanti South Government Hospital for treatment.

To reduce overcrowding and prevent a potential stampede, authorities have asked some applicants to attend the exercise on Thursday and Friday.

The Ghana Armed Forces announced an extension of the date for its originally scheduled one-month recruitment exercise. The national defence force’s recruitment exercise, which was expected to end on October 31, was extended to November 7.

GAF announced the new date in an official statement shared on November 1 via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The statement, titled “Extension of recruitment deadline” and signed by the Acting Director General, Public Relations, Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, reads:

“The Ghana Armed Forces has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment exercise by one week due to some technical challenges encountered on the recruitment portal during the initial period. The new deadline is 7 November 2025.”

Before the extension, GAF, in a statement signed by Acting Director General for Public Relations, Veronica Afei Arjun, outlined a new development in which the recruitment exercise would be conducted in all sixteen (16) regions nationwide. It noted that this marks a significant change in the security force’s recruitment process, moving away from the traditional method that was largely centralised in a few selected centres such as Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi.

The new approach, GAF explained, is to ensure equal opportunity for applicants across the country, particularly those in remote or underserved areas who previously had to travel long distances and incur high costs.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the public that the 2025 Enlistment/Recruitment Exercise into the Ghana Armed Forces will commence in the coming days at all the regional capitals of the 16 Regions of the country. This approach offers equal opportunity for all potential applicants in the entire country,” parts of the statement read.

According to GAF, recruitment announcements will be made through its official website and Ghana’s two main state-owned national newspapers. GAF also warned the public to disregard recruitment advertisements circulating on social media, stressing that no member of the force would issue such notices or ads.

“The general public is kindly informed that any purported recruitment links on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or any other social media platforms inviting people for protocol recruitment are a scam and should be ignored. Additionally, no such enlistment/recruitment invitation will emanate from any member of the Ghana Armed Forces or its High Command and should be ignored as well,” it added. “The Ghana Armed Forces counts on the cooperation of the general public in this endeavour.”

The strong warning comes against the backdrop of fraudulent recruitment schemes that have increased in recent years, particularly on social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. These scams often promise “protocol recruitment,” suggesting backdoor access in exchange for payment. Scammers typically impersonate senior officers, circulate fake enlistment links, and demand fees in return for guaranteed placement.

Over the years, some scammers have demanded protocol fees ranging from GH¢2,000 to GH¢10,000, depending on the promises made and the desperation of applicants. Victims often paid multiple instalments, believing they were securing officer roles or fast-tracked enlistment. Payments were usually made in cash or through mobile money without receipts, making prosecution difficult. GAF has repeatedly stressed that recruitment is free and that any demand for payment is illegal.

In a Facebook post on September 29, Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi revealed that the government is set to recruit about twelve thousand (12,000) personnel to strengthen the country’s defence. He further disclosed that the cost of recruitment forms has been reduced by 40 percent to ensure wider access and fairness.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is undergoing a massive expansion beginning this week. Over the next 3 years, GAF will recruit 12,000 personnel to reinforce our national defence capabilities. In line with H.E. the President and Commander-in-Chief John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to affordability, accessibility and fairness, the cost of the recruitment forms has been reduced by over 40% compared to the last recruitment,” the Minister said.

He stressed that the recruitment process remains free of charge and cautioned against fraud.

“Let this be clear: Recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces is NOT for sale, and will NEVER be for sale under our #EagleEyes watch. Any individual or syndicate involved in fraudulent recruitment schemes will be dealt with without mercy. Take note that no recruitment will take place on social media. The process will be transparent and professional,” he emphasised. The Minister also cautioned prospective applicants to be ready for the demands of military life.

“All qualified applicants must be medically fit and be prepared to abandon all hope of normal life! We are building a force that reflects the strength, discipline, and unity of Ghana,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the government has announced the commencement of recruitment for internal security agencies. The one-month recruitment exercise is scheduled to begin on November 15 and end on December 15. This was stated in a formal statement issued by the Interior Ministry on Tuesday, November 4.

The Ministry of the Interior wishes to inform the public that from 15th November to 15th December 2025, applications will be received for recruitment into the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Immigration Service.

The Ministry explained, “This nationwide recruitment exercise forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana’s internal security architecture, enhance public safety, and promote effective service delivery across all security agencies. The Ministry, therefore, invites suitably qualified, disciplined, and patriotic Ghanaian citizens who desire to serve the nation with integrity, professionalism, and dedication to submit their applications within the stated period.”

The statement also warned interested applicants to avoid middlemen who may claim they can influence the recruitment process, adding that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted to proceed with the rest of the process.

“Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted and invited for screening, aptitude test, and background verification. Applicants are cautioned not to deal with individuals or groups who claim they can influence the recruitment process for a fee. The Ministry of the Interior and its Agencies do not charge any fee at any stage of the exercise. Any applicant found to have submitted false information or forged documents will be disqualified and may face prosecution. Additionally, applicants who engage middlemen at any stage of the recruitment process will be automatically disqualified from the process,” parts of the statement noted.

The general eligibility requirements for the Ghana Police Service are as follows: “All applicants for the 2025 Ghana Police Service recruitment must be Ghanaian by birth, of good character, and free of any criminal record. They should not have been dismissed from any public service or other employment, and must meet the age limits set for their chosen category by November 1, 2025. However, the Police Service has five categories of entry, including general duty recruits, tradesmen, graduates (general duty), medical professionals, and religious affairs. Under each of the above-listed categories are specific eligibility requirements as stated by the Interior Ministry. The common qualification across all tradesmen categories states that each applicant must not be more than 35 years old by November 1, 2025, and must possess a technical or vocational certificate (such as GES/COTVET, National Proficiency, City & Guilds, or NVTI) relevant to their trade.

Candidates must also have an active e-mail account, a mobile phone number, and be ready to undergo paramilitary and physical training. Medical professionals are additionally required to have completed one year post-housemanship in a registered hospital or clinic.”

Applicants seeking entry into the general duties of the service are expected to hold a first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in Humanities or Social Sciences and have at least one year of post-qualification work experience. Additional qualifications are considered an advantage.

Interested applicants for the service’s Agriculture and Education sectors are also expected to possess a first degree (Second Class Lower or above) in fields such as Animal Science, Crop Science, Soil Science, General Agriculture, Agricultural Mechanic, Agribusiness, Agricultural Biotechnology, Agricultural Engineering, or Agricultural Economics, along with one year of post-qualification experience. Applicants for the Education sector must have qualifications in Basic Education, Early Childhood Education, or Guidance and Counselling, with at least one year of post-qualification experience.

For legal officers, candidates are required to possess a law degree (LLB/BL) and must have been called to the Bar with at least a year of post-qualification experience. Medical professionals are mandated to possess a professional qualification, council registration, and some post-qualification experience.

    Ghana National Fire Service

The internal security recruitment announcement comes a few days after the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) announced an extension of the date for its originally scheduled one-month recruitment exercise. The national defence force’s recruitment exercise, which was expected to end on October 31, has now been extended to November 7. GAF announced the new date in an official statement shared on November 1 via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The national defence force’s recruitment exercise, which was expected to end on October 31, was extended to November 7.

GAF announced the new date in an official statement shared on November 1st via their official X (formerly Twitter). The statement titled “Extension of recruitment deadline” and signed by the Acting Director General, Public Relations, Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, reads, “The Ghana Armed Forces has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment exercise by one week due to some technical challenges encountered on the recruitment portal during the initial period. The new deadline is 7 November 2025.”

Before the extension, GAF, in a statement signed by Acting Director General for Public Relations, Veronica Afei Arjun, outlined a new development in which the recruitment exercise would be conducted in all sixteen (16) regions nationwide.

It noted that it marks a significant change in the security force’s recruitment process, moving away from the traditional method that was largely centralised in a few selected centres such as Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi.

“The general public is kindly informed that any purported recruitment links on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any other social media platforms inviting people for protocol recruitment are a scam and should be ignored.

He further disclosed that the cost of recruitment forms has been slashed by 40 percent to ensure wider access and fairness.

“Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted and invited for screening, aptitude test, and background verification.Applicants are cautioned not to deal with individuals or groups who claim they can influence the recruitment process for a fee.

“The Ministry of the Interior and its Agencies do not charge any fee at any stage of the exercise. Any applicant found to have submitted false information or forged documents will be disqualified and may face prosecution. Additionally, applicants who engage middlemen at any stage of the recruitment process will be automatically disqualified from the process,” parts of the statement noted.

Off-duty soldier caught on CCTV assaulting woman in pharmacy arrested

A disturbing video making the airwaves has prompted the intervention of the military police. The CCTV footage, which has since gone viral, shows a man of muscular build assaulting a young male pharmacist and a young woman in a pharmacy.

The incident, which took place at Burma Camp in Accra earlier this week, came to light late Wednesday. In the widely circulated video footage, the tall, dark-complexioned, angry man was seen slapping the pharmacist.

The abuser, whose name has been given as Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Mensah Williams of the Ghana Air Force, was further seen attacking the woman with several blows to her head after she attempted to record the incident. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, Mensah Williams continued the assault.

In response to the appalling incident, the military police have arrested Mensah Williams. He is in the custody of the Cantonments Police for further investigation and possible prosecution. The video has since sparked intense debate on social media, with scores of Ghanaians calling for swift and firm disciplinary action against the soldier.

According to reports, the assaulted lady is the daughter of the former Provost Marshal of the Military Police. The Provost is essentially a senior military officer responsible for law enforcement, discipline, and security within the armed forces. He coordinates and oversees all investigations into crimes involving military personnel.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has condemned the act, assuring “the general public that it will not condone any acts of assault on civilians and will not shield any soldier engaged in such.”

In recent years, Ghana has recorded several assaults by security personnel, particularly those affiliated with the military. Earlier this month, residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region recounted terrifying encounters with military personnel, accusing them of using guns, stones, and metal objects to assault civilians during a late-night operation.

On the night of Tuesday, March 18, heavily armed soldiers reportedly stormed homes in Bawku, conducting forced searches and physically assaulting residents. This military action is said to have been triggered by the fatal shooting of a Ghana Armed Forces officer on Monday, March 17. Reports indicate that the officer was ambushed and killed by unidentified gunmen while walking on foot.

In July, the statue of the Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, was allegedly destroyed by some members of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) during a confrontation with locals in Bawku, Upper East Region.

The statue, which was erected in 2024 in honour of the Zugraan (Overlord) of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II—a culturally revered figure in Bawku—served as a strong emblem of tradition and communal pride.

The reconstruction of the statue is expected to begin in the coming days following a directive from His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama. Then Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, in collaboration with other security agencies, was tasked with overseeing the process as well as restoring calm in the area.

This information was made known by the then Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, at a durbar with all ranks of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at the Burma Camp on Wednesday, July 17.

“To assure that His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), remains committed to bringing an end to decades-old conflict.

“To address the recent happenings, the National Security Coordinator, myself, the Minister for the Interior, the Chief of the Defence Staff, and the IGP have all been tasked to play coordinated but differentiated roles to ensure that peace and calm are restored immediately, and this includes the restoration of the statue of the Zugraan of the Kusasis Traditional Area,” he added.

The recent altercation in Bawku has reportedly led to the deaths of five locals. On Tuesday, July 15, some Members of Parliament in the Upper East area called for the prosecution of the soldiers involved and compensation for the victims.

U/E: Three killed, two injured by gunmen in Binduri

The Binduri District of the Upper East Region has been thrown into mourning following a shooting incident which resulted in the death of three individuals and left five others injured.

According to reports, gunmen attacked and invaded the residence of the victims on Sunday, October 26, and shot them. Among the three deceased individuals is a five-year-old child who died instantly.

The Manager of Binduri-based Maxx Empire Radio and TV, George Bukari, is reported to be among those who sustained injuries in the aftermath of the incident.

The incident has been linked to the long-running Bawku conflict. The conflict, which resurfaced in 2021, has claimed multiple lives and displaced several families. However, the government has, in several ways, initiated efforts to bring calm to the area. In July this year, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) deployed soldiers to conflict-prone areas such as Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla.

This update comes less than a week after four individuals lost their lives in a deadly daylight attack at the district office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the region. The unfortunate incident also left several others injured. The deceased individuals include a bystander, an NHIA staff member, a mentally unstable man and Yahaya Bukari, headmaster of Garu D/A Junior High School.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Garu District Office of the NHIA was invaded by four armed men on two motorbikes, who subsequently fired shots wildly. Two of the gunmen are said to have been masks.

“Around 10am there about, we heard gunshots. Initially, we thought it was coming from the rural bank area, but later we found out that the attackers had gone to the health insurance office,” a witness stated.

Speaking to the media, former Presiding Member of the Garu District Assembly and now Assembly Member for Kugri, Edward Ndebugri, recounted that the gunmen later targeted bystanders and fleeing residents.

“There is a public school close to the health insurance office, and when the shooting started, the teachers and pupils began running helter-skelter. The gunmen chased them in the direction they fled, and when one of the teachers fell, they shot him dead,” he added.

The assailants reportedly left the NHIA office with nothing. In response to the incident, heavily armed police and military personnel thronged key areas, including the District Health Insurance Office and the Presbyterian Hospital as of 2 p.m. on Monday.

“The whole town is in shock. This is the first time we are witnessing such an incident. People are living in fear, and we are pleading with the security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the Assembly Member for Kugri appealed.

The injured individuals are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at the Garu Presbyterian Hospital. Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into the incident to determine the motive behind the attack.

Earlier this month, an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region has reportedly left an Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), Rafiq Mohammed, dead and another officer, AICOII Oppong Daniel, also injured.

While details of the attack remain unclear, reports suggest the incident took place at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3. However, AK-47 shell casings used by the attackers during the operation have been retrieved by the joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS.

Meanwhile, AICOII Oppong Daniel is receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the incident.

In July this year, the lifeless body of an immigration officer identified as Stephen King Amoah, also known as Nana Kofi, was discovered in a drainage system near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, Accra.

The deceased is said to have gone missing five days (since July 3) before his tragic death. This was contained in a press statement by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, July 10.

Providing more details about the tragic incident, the police noted that the murderer(s) of the 38-year-old also set his body on fire.

The deceased’s remains have been conveyed to the Police Hospital morgue after the relatives positively identified the body as Stephen.

The police have disclosed that their preliminary investigations indicate the deceased had gone to meet his debtor, one Bright Aweh, who had promised to pay the outstanding debt owed on Thursday, July 3, in the evening.

The victim never returned home that night, and his phone remained switched off throughout, raising concerns among family and friends who later reported him missing.

“Investigations revealed that on 3rd July 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., the deceased left his residence at Ashongman Estate after receiving WhatsApp images of cash bundles from one Bright Aweh, who requested to meet him at a spot at Ashongman Estate to settle an outstanding amount.

“According to the complainant, the deceased never returned home that night, and his phone remained switched off thereafter,” the police said.

After the deceased’s family filed a complaint at the police station, Bright Aweh was arrested to assist with the investigation.

He admitted that he met with the deceased and alleged that he gave a cash of GHS500,000 to the deceased, instructing him “to use part of the money to pay off some debts and hold the remaining amount for later collection.”

But the police in their statement noted that “the suspect could not clearly explain the source of the funds and gave conflicting statements.”

Meanwhile, the police pledged to get to the bottom of the case and ensure justice is served to the perpetrators.

“The Regional Police Command strongly condemns such violent and criminal acts and assures the public that it is working diligently to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this incident and bring all responsible persons to justice,” it added.

Subsequently, the Ghana Police announced the arrest of the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of immigration officer Stephen King Amoah, also known as Nana Kofi on August 4.

This follows the discovery of weapons believed to have been used in the murder of Immigration Officer Stephen Amoah.

During a press briefing on Monday, August 4, the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, revealed that bloodstains were found in the living room, on a burnt, blood-soaked carpet, and on a fufu pestle suspected to have been used in the murder by the suspect.

According to the Police, the forensic conducted on Thursday, July 24, also exposed freshly sprayed walls, hinting at an attempted cleanup by the suspect.

“The Kwabenya Teshie Police visited the suspect’s residence, and the forensic inspection revealed the following bloodstains in the living room and evidence of attempted cleanup, freshly sprayed walls, and an empty can of spray paint. A search of a secondary crime scene near the GBC satellite area also uncovered a burnt woolen carpet and partially burnt camouflage fabric.”

“These items were photographed, retrieved and photocopied for forensic analysis. On 24th July, the police received a warrant to search a particular room in the suspect’s house. A search in the room revealed more bloodstains, which were photographed and samples collected for forensic analysis. A further search in the bushes about 100 metres from the suspect’s house also led to the retrieval of the…” the Police said.

The Service has noted that in the coming days, undertake a DNA exercise on the bloodstains with samples from the deceased mother and son, aiding with the process.

“I wish to say that the initial blood sample collected was positive for human blood. To aid the investigations, the deceased mother and son has provided sample for DNA profiling. In the face of these pieces of evidence the suspect who was initially charged with kidnapping has since been rearrested and formally charged with murder. He is currently on remand following his appearance with the Adabraka District Court and is scheduled to reappear on 8th August 2025.

“A special operation is currently underway to identify and arrest his accomplices and we are following other vital leads to gather all necessary evidence against the suspect and his accomplices. The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that the investigations is ongoing and every effort is being made to ensure that all the perpetrators are prosecuted,” she added.

Meanwhile, recent reports suggested that the third suspect involved in the murder of Stephen King Amoah, an Immigration Officer, has succumbed to an illness.

According to sources, the victim’s brother, Kwasi Amoako, revealed this information to the media.

“Yesterday we went to court and I can confirm that the third suspect has passed on. I was told by the Police CID, the one who is in charge of the case. We thank God that our brother has started seeking justice for himself,” he is quoted to have said by MyJoyOnline.

The police are yet to issue a formal statement on the suspect’s death.

The Adabraka District Court on August 22, continued hearing the case after remanding the prime suspect into police custody for two weeks.

The court has adjourned the case involving the murder of immigration officer, Stephen King Amoah, to October 9 following the police’s request for more time to gather the due evidence against the accused parties.

The adjournment of the case was announced during the court hearing at the Adabraka District Court on Thursday, September 4, where the prosecutors prayed the court that the Ghana Police Service needed more time and specialised gadgets to advance investigations.

According to them, a court order had been secured to facilitate the process and prayed that the suspects, Bright Aweh and Thomas Ziggah, remain in custody.

However, Counsel for the suspects, Gordon Aboagye, expressed concerns about the state of his clients, who appeared visibly distressed, suggesting that they may have been held under harsh conditions while in custody.

Referring to the need to uphold democratic principles, he prayed that the court reveal the detention location of the suspects in order for their families to visit them and check their well-being while in custody.

“In line with democratic principles, families of the suspects should be aware of their location to enable visitation”

“My Lord, my client has appeared in court limping and with bloodshot eyes. He has already been treated twice at the Police Hospital without improvement. We respectfully request that he be sent to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for independent medical attention,” he argued.

However, the prosecution objected, urging the defence to formally apply if it insists on the transfer of its client.

He further appealed to the bereaved family to remain calm and allow the law to take its course. He commiserated with them for their loss.

“We sympathise with the family of the deceased and plead with them to remain calm and allow the law to take its course,” he added.

The court, on the other hand, admonished the family of the bereaved family to stay patient, assuring them that justice would be duly served.

Meanwhile, a dramatic scene unfolded at the court when the aunt of the late officer performed rituals, breaking eggs and invoking curses on those she believes are responsible for his death.

She reportedly said, “Anyone responsible for his death should also suffer the same fate. All your generation will suffer the same fate; the gods should deal ruthlessly with anyone responsible for his murder. The gods shouldn’t spare anyone involved.”

Be ready to abandon normal life if you join GAF – Dep. Defence Minister to recruit canditates

Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is set to begin recruitment in the coming days, the service has announced in a statement.

In light of this, the Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi took to his official Facebook page and sent a cautionary reminder to all applicants who will make it for the recruitment and be shortlisted for training to join the force. He sent a stern caution with a patriotic call to service, highlighting the sacrifices of military life, which is quite different from that of the civilians.

His message read, “ All qualified applicants must be medically fit and be prepared to abandon all hope of normal life!.We are building a force that reflects the strength, discipline, and unity of Ghana”.

He continued that government is set to recruit about twelve thousand (12,000) personnel to boost the country’s defence. He added that the cost of recruitment forms has been slashed by 40 percent to ensure wider access and promote equality.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is undergoing a massive expansion beginning this week. Over the next 3 years, GAF will recruit 12,000 personnel to reinforce our national defence capabilities. In line with H.E. the President and Commander-in-Chief John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to affordability, accessibility and fairness, the cost of the recruitment forms has been reduced by over 40% compared to the last recruitment,” the Minister noted.

He emphasised that recruitment was free of charge, writing his text in caps to underscore the importance of his point.

The process will be transparent and professional”, he added.

In addition to this, GAF’s recruitment announcemnt was issued on Monday, September 29 and signed by Acting Director General for Public Relations, Veronica Afei Arjun.

It announced a new development where the recruitment exercise would be conducted in all sixteen (16) regions nationwide.

This marks a significant change in the security force’s recruitment process, moving away from the traditional method that was largely centralised in a few selected centres, such as Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi. This, they explained, is to ensure equal opportunity for applicants nationwide, especially those in remote or underserved areas who previously had to travel long distances and incur high costs.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the public that the 2025 Enlistment/Recruitment Exercise into the Ghana Armed Forces will commence in the coming days at all the regional capitals of the 16 Regions of the country. This approach offers equal opportunity for all potential applicants in the entire country,” parts of the statement said.

GAF announced that the recruitment announcement would be made through its official website and Ghana’s two main state-owned national newspapers.

“The enlistment/recruitment exercise will be announced through the official Ghana Armed Forces platforms such as gafonline.mil.gh, gafrecruitment.mil.gh, in addition to the Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times newspapers,” GFA noted.

GAF issued a warning to the public to ignore any recruitment advertisements on social media, stating that no member of their force would issue such notices or ads.

“The general public is kindly informed that any purported recruitment links on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any other social media platforms inviting people for protocol recruitment are a scam and should be ignored. Additionally, no such enlistment/recruitment invitation will emanate from any member of the Ghana Armed Forces or its High Command and should be ignored as well”, adding that “the Ghana Armed Forces counts on the cooperation of the general public in this endeavour.

The GAF’s issuance of strong warnings comes on the back of fraudulent recruitment schemes that have surged over the years, especially on social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. These scams often promise “protocol recruitment”, implying backdoor access and demanding payment from desperate applicants.

Scammers impersonate senior officers, circulate fake enlistment links, and charge fees for guaranteed placement.

Over the years, some scammers have often pegged protocol fees ranging from GH¢2,000 to GH¢10,000, depending on the scammer’s promises and the desperation of the applicant. Some victims paid multiple instalments, believing they were securing officer roles or fast-tracked enlistment.

These payments were often made in cash or mobile money, with no receipts, making prosecution difficult. The GAF has repeatedly stated that recruitment is free, and any payment demand is criminal.

Meanwhile, GAF is actively contributing to ECOWAS regional security efforts through the 2024–2025 Standby Force collaboration. This involves joint training exercises, intelligence sharing, and border security coordination with neighbouring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Togo.

Ghana’s activation to contribute to the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) followed a major decision on 15 September, when ECOWAS Defence and Finance Ministers met in Abuja, Nigeria, to finalise funding and deployment arrangements. This marked a pivotal step in strengthening regional security in response to growing threats in the Sahel corridor.

Subsequently, a Tripartite Meeting of Commandants from ECOWAS Training Centres of Excellence was held in Accra from 17 to 19 September 2025, hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC). At the meeting, Ghana’s troop readiness, logistical capacity, and training contributions were thoroughly assessed.

The ECOWAS Standby Force is expected to begin operations in early 2026, with Ghana contributing personnel, equipment, and strategic support. As part of preparations, the 48 Engineer Regiment and Northern Command (Nyohini Camp, Tamale) have already undergone inspection and clearance for deployment.

Ghana will join a broader Multi-National Joint Task Force with Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo, working together to combat terrorism, transnational crime, and instability across West Africa.

GAF explains why victims of helicopter crash were not placed in body bags

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has explained why victims of the August 6 helicopter crash were placed in sack bags instead of body bags.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, August 13, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong clarified that the Army went to the site with body bags; however, they settled for sack bags due to extreme heat from the deceased persons remains.

The clarification is a response to heavy criticism after videos surfaced showing the victims’ remains being carried in sacks and not body bags. Many have argued that the remains of such dignitaries could have been handled more appropriately.

On the other hand, the Deputy Defence Minister has cautioned against dissemination of unconfirmed reports with regard to the death of the eight individuals involved in the helicopter crash.

“We also want to caution the media and some analysts who have been churning out misinformation and untruths about this whole incident. All I want to say is that Ghanaians should trust that the Ministry and the Ghana Armed Forces will be diligent in the investigations and transparent about it. Whatever was the cause will be made known to the people of Ghana, and we will take some lessons from that. I don’t want to say anything beyond that.”

Claims that suggest that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are not equipped with the necessary equipment to operate effectively have been dismissed by the Deputy Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Dr. Jamaldeen Tonzua Seidu.

Speaking to the media on Monday, August 11, Dr. Seidu, noted that such assertions are baseless and lack evidence, adding that, GAF is remain well-resourced to carry out their mandate.

However, he maintains that there is still room for further improvement within the Armed Forces to enhance efficiency.

“What’s the basis for saying we don’t have many operational aircraft or that they are not functioning well? Such conclusions may have no basis without evidential proof. We need to weigh what we have statistically against the overall operations they undertake, and then decide whether the Ghana Air Force should be commended.

“Under very trying circumstances, our men and women in uniform particularly the Ghana Air Force are doing their best. We are probably doing well, but there is always room for improvement,” he noted.

This was revealed by the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini on Thursday, August 7.

The burial was expected to be conducted today, Thursday, August 7, as per Islamic tradition. However, speaking to the media on Thursday, August 7, the Deputy Minister stated that the recent development is due to the state of the remains of their bodies. According to him, a new date will be fixed after a conclusion has been made.

“The information earlier was that, because of Islamic tradition, the Muslims among them were to be buried today. I am sure those decisions were taken before the actual state of the remains was determined.

“When that was done, it was clear to all that it was going to be practically impossible to carry out any burial today. So, those who had to be communicated to were quickly informed last night, and arrangements were suspended until further notice, or until some examinations are done before new dates are communicated,” Suhuyini added.

We will use all necessary force to enforce peace in Bawku – GAF declares

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has emphasised that it will employ all the necessary force to ensure peace prevails in Bawku, Upper East Region.

In a press release, the Acting Director General of Public Relations, VA Arhin, explained that the new development follows a recent directive by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the military, its new strategies will focus on conflict zone areas, such as Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla, to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that following the directive by the President of the Republic and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces has, with immediate effect, transitioned to peace enforcement has become necessary due to the activities of armed elements that have intermittently resulted in violence, reprisal attacks and innocent deaths highlighting a dangerous pattern that threatens not only Bawku but also the peace and security of our dear Nation.

“Ghana Armed Forces operations during this period will be conducted in areas to include Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu and Zebilla. This peace enforcement phase will see the Military undertake robust and purposeful operations that would enhance community protection, while ensuring sanity returns to affected areas,” parts of the release read.

The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022, only to be exiled later when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces. On Saturday evening, July 26, two male students of Nalerigu Senior High School (SHS) in the Northern Region, Lukman and Gideon, were shot dead by unknown assailants.

The armed group reportedly invaded the school premises, making their way to the dormitory, and opened fire on the victims. The deceased students have been laid to rest. The Police have commenced an investigation into the murder of the students that has been linked to the renewed Bawku conflict.

Also in Bawku, a third-year student of Bawku Senior High School, Hakim Kundima, was killed on the school campus on Saturday evening by some armed men. Similar to the Nalerigu Senior High School incident, the armed men found their way into the school’s premises, dragged the deceased from the dormitory, and shot him. The Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed by the Municipal Education Directorate following the fatal shooting.

In reaction to the recent violent attack, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has imposed curfew hours on Nalerigu Township and its environs in the North East Region from 2pm to 6am, effective Sunday, July 27, until further notice.

The curfew has created an environment conducive to the evacuation of all students in various educational institutions in affected areas, some of whom have been unfortunately targeted in the conflict. The government has called on the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.

Meanwhile, the government has reviewed the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region from 2pm to 6am, effective Sunday, July 27, until further notice. The government, in a statement issued on July 27, announced that it is stepping up its approach from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and other affected areas due to the recent escalation of violence, which could derail the peacebuilding process.

The Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order and take all necessary measures to protect lives and property. Residents have been advised to fully cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure peace.

Earlier, the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, indicated that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is fully prepared to contain any form of escalation in Bawku and its surrounding areas.

Providing an update on the state of his sector on Monday, July 21, he acknowledged the tense situation in Bawku but assured that the military has implemented strong and effective security measures to respond to any threats and maintain stability.

“We acknowledge that the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains volatile. The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring and has put in place robust mechanisms to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained in the interest of the people and long-lasting resolution of the conflict through dialogue,” he said.

He warned that any individuals or groups who take advantage of the conflict to commit crimes will face strict action from the authorities.

“In doing so, we shall always separate crimes from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflict,” he said.

A few weeks ago, there was a confrontation between some members of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and locals, which resulted in the death of five civilians and the destruction of a statue of the Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

Recently, the government banned the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the area. It emphasised that anyone found in violation will be arrested and prosecuted.

On April 15, Otumfuo formally announced that the critical mediation sessions would take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. However, it was postponed due to the complexity of the dispute in the locality.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku region.

The government has commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for mediating the conflict and appreciates all stakeholders who are supporting the peace process. The Otumfuo mediation, with the genuine help of Nayiri and Zugraana, had almost brought finality to the conflict until the very recent killings, which have necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good. The government is urging all parties to refrain from violence and support the peace process.

Armed forces fully alert in Bawku – Minister of Defence

Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has indicated that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is fully prepared to contain any form of escalation in Bawku and surrounding areas, such as in the Upper East region.

“In doing so, we shall always separate crimes from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflict,” he said.

The Minister’s remarks come a few weeks after a recent altercation in Bawku, where a confrontation between some members of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and locals resulted in the death of five civilians and the destruction of a statue of the Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

The reconstruction of the statue is expected to begin in the coming days, following a directive from His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama.

The statue, which was erected in 2024, in honour of the Zugraan (Overlord) of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, a culturally revered figure in Bawku. It served as a strong emblem of tradition and communal pride.

The reconstruction of the statue is expected to begin in the coming days, following a directive from His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama.

The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, in collaboration with other security agencies, has been tasked with overseeing the process as well as restoring calm in the area.

“To assure that His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), remains committed to bringing an end to decades-old conflict.

“To address, the recent happenings the National Security Coordinator, myself, the Minister for the Interior, the Chief of the Defence Staff and the IGP have all been tasked to play coordinated but differentiated roles to ensure that peace and calm is restored immediately and this includes restoration of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusasis traditional area,” he added.

According to him, the government is working with security to contain the situation and protect lives and property.

“I have directed thorough investigations into the recent matter and promised to take swift action based on recommendations,” he said.

On Tuesday, July 15, some Members of Parliament in the Upper East area called for the prosecution of the soldiers involved and compensation for the victims.

Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, saw conflict erupt once more in late 2024.

In May, the government renewed the curfew in Bawku Municipality and it’s surrounding areas in the Upper East Region through an Executive Instrument.

The Minister in a statement urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm and use peaceful, non-violent means to address the challenges facing the area and work towards lasting peace.

The government also reminded the public that there is a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the area. Anyone found in violation will be arrested and prosecuted.

Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a distinguished security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of various national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

He believes that a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone might not be enough to resolve the deep divisions that have fueled the protracted conflict.

Meanwhile, GAF has called on residents and the wider public to cooperate with ongoing security operations, as efforts to restore normalcy in the region.

A statement from the Military High Command revealed that the incident involved three officers and four soldiers, who are accused of detaining and attacking three people suspected of stealing a mobile phone. The victims reportedly sustained various injuries during the altercation.

To investigate the matter, both the Military Police and the Ashanti Regional Police CID have joined forces to determine the facts surrounding the event.

  • GAF, Presidency named least corrupt state institutions in Global InfoAnalytics report

GAF, Presidency named least corrupt state institutions in Global InfoAnalytics report

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Presidency have emerged as the least corrupt public institutions in Ghana, according to a recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics. The report, which assessed public perceptions of corruption across various institutions, placed both entities at the top with a score of 5.27.

Religious leaders followed closely behind with a score of 5.25, reflecting a strong level of trust from the public. The findings suggest that, despite ongoing concerns about corruption in the country, these institutions continue to be viewed as credible and relatively free from corrupt practices.

In an unexpected shift, ministers and government appointees were ranked among the least corrupt groups, receiving a score of 4.61. This challenges past narratives that have often linked political leadership with corruption scandals. The improved perception may indicate growing public confidence in governance reforms and accountability measures.

The survey provides valuable insight into how Ghanaians perceive corruption within key institutions. While corruption remains a significant issue in other sectors, the rankings highlight a degree of confidence in the Presidency, the military, and religious bodies as institutions upholding integrity in national affairs.

Successive governments have often touted their measures to combat corruption, yet much remains to be done.

Ghana’s standing on the global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has seen a slight decline, with the country dropping from a score of 43 to 42 in the 2024 rankings.

This was revealed in a press release issued on February 11 by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of Transparency International.

Ghana ranked 80th out of 180 countries and territories assessed in this year’s report.

The incumbent government, led by President John Mahama, has consistently underscored its commitment to tackling corruption and promoting transparency in governance.

The government is set to launch the National Integrity Awards Scheme, aimed at naming and shaming corrupt public officials in an effort to promote ethical conduct, accountability, and good governance in Ghana.

Conversely, those who have brought disgrace to their institutions or the country will be dishonored with the Vulture Awards.

The initiative, announced by Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will also recognize individuals who demonstrate integrity and professionalism while holding those who tarnish the nation’s reputation accountable.

Speaking at the conclusion of the First Meeting and First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic in Accra over the weekend, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the crucial role of integrity in governance.

The new awards scheme, according to Bagbin, will serve as an essential tool to foster discipline and accountability within Ghana’s governance system.

“A country with men and women of integrity will contribute immensely to its quality and socio-economic advancement,” Speaker Bagbin stated.

He expressed hope that the initiative would restore trust in leadership and encourage public officials to adhere to the highest ethical standards.

GAF looming food crisis: Govt allocates GHS 6.7bn to Defence Ministry

The government has vowed to take swift action to avert a looming food shortage within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) caused by an unpaid debt of GH₵275 million owed to food suppliers since August 2023.

President John Mahama gave this assurance during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, and other Service Chiefs at the Jubilee House on yesterday March 28, Friday.

He emphasized that the Ministries of Finance and Defence are collaborating to clear the existing arrears while putting measures in place to settle the remaining debt.

“This year, we have allocated over GH₵6.7 billion to the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces. As we turn the economy around, you can rest assured that your budgetary allocation will further increase to secure new platforms and assets to enhance your operations,” Mahama said.

On the broader financial challenges facing the Armed Forces, the President acknowledged a debt burden of around GH₵3.7 billion but expressed confidence that, through innovation and dedication, the military would be modernized and expanded.

“We are already working to fix the imminent food crisis that could have affected the Ghana Armed Forces due to the GH₵275 million owed to food suppliers for the past 17 months,” he added.

Mahama also highlighted the contribution of the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited to Ghana’s agricultural development, noting that the disciplined workforce and strategic land holdings of the GAF could help enhance food security in the country.

He urged the military to explore innovative financing solutions to improve infrastructure, training, and accommodation.

“I will be by your side every step of the way. We are already planning to upgrade the Asutsuare Training Camp into a first-class training facility,” he stated.

The President also called on GAF to take decisive action against illegal mining and continue their efforts to maintain peace in Bawku and other conflict-prone areas.

“I know our personnel are deployed in Bawku and other areas for internal security operations, dealing with ethnic and chieftaincy disputes. While we work on resolving these disputes through mediation, judicial intervention, and community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, the Armed Forces must continue to play their part in maintaining peace. I trust you to deliver,” he said.

Mahama further expressed confidence in the military’s leadership, stating, “I am confident that you will all work tirelessly to ensure that our Armed Forces serve with unity, resilience, and pride. I wish the new CDS and the chiefs of the Ghana Armed Forces a successful tenure as you protect and defend our dear nation.”

The donation, made on Thursday, March 27, comprised 5,000 five-kilogram bags of rice, 6,255 bottles of cooking oil, 4,800 tins of mackerel, and 4,800 tins of tomatoes.

The approved budget, exceeding GHS 6 billion, includes provisions to clear a longstanding debt of GHS 275 million owed to food suppliers since August 2023.

Additionally, the Defence Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing food security for the Armed Forces through mechanized farming. This strategy, he explained, is designed to lower the military’s food expenditure while also playing a role in controlling inflation.

“We’re solving the problems, and we shall remind Ghanaians, lest we forget!” Dr. Boamah emphasized.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Boamah revealed that food suppliers are on the verge of halting deliveries due to unpaid arrears, a situation he attributed to financial mismanagement under the previous administration.

The Finance Minister has assured he will effect this payment plan immediately Parliament approves the 2025 Budget figures (The Appropriation…),” he wrote.

The Defence Minister further disclosed that the debt, accumulated between August 2023 and December 2024, had placed significant strain on military food supply chains. He expressed concern about the impact on the welfare of personnel, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing provisions for the armed forces.

“It was revealed that the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government did not prioritise food provision for the Ghana Armed Forces,” he stated.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Dr. Boamah stressed, “Yet, we all know soldiers don’t march on empty stomachs. Huge food supply debt!”

Following a high-level meeting on sustainable food provision for the military, he assured that Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson is working on a structured payment plan to cover both current obligations and outstanding arrears.

“It must be placed on record that the outstanding indebtedness in terms of claims is almost GHS3,700,000,000, and Mr. Speaker, this includes indebtedness to food suppliers, supply and repair of equipment, provision of machinery, and equipment.

“Mr. Speaker, we all know soldiers should not and must not march on empty stomachs. However, Mr. Speaker, food suppliers have even threatened to hold supplies to the Ghana Armed Forces. The Defence Minister disclosed that between August 2023 and December 2024, the previous administration accumulated an outstanding debt of approximately GHC270 million to food suppliers.

To address the financial burden, Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson has assured that current bills will be settled while efforts are made to clear the arrears inherited from the previous government.

“We work towards settling the arrears of over GHC270 million left behind by the NPP government,” Dr. Boamah noted.

As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Defence Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing both short-term and medium-term solutions to prevent further disruptions.

“We’re determined to provide short-term and medium-term solutions to this avoidable food supply problem. We’ll commence that journey of food supply solutions next week,” he stated.

Allegations of ammunition shipment false – GAF

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has called on the public to dismiss misleading rumors and stressed the importance of confirming information about security operations before sharing it online.

This clarification follows claims circulating on social media that a civilian pick-up truck was allowed to enter the 5th Battalion of Infantry’s Magazine to transport boxes of ammunition to an unknown location.

The GAF promptly denied these allegations, labeling them as completely unfounded.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, signed by the GAF, the Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General Eric Aggrey Quashie, explained that the vehicle in question was actually delivering a live cow.

The statement added that the animal was quarantined upon arrival and then relocated to a nearby kraal, not involved in any military activity.

“The attention of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been drawn to an audio recording which has gone viral on social media platforms. The said audio alleges that a civil pick-up truck has been allowed entry into the Magazine at 5 Battalion of Infantry to convey boxes of ammunition to an unknown destination.

“GAF wishes to assure the public that the information on the said audio is false and should be treated with the contempt it deserves. The vehicle that entered the Magazine premises was there to deliver a newly acquired live cow to be quarantined, before being relocated to the kraal which is adjacent to the Magazine, parts of the statement read.

The Armed Forces cautioned against the spread of such baseless claims, emphasizing that sharing unverified details about military operations can generate unnecessary anxiety and confusion.

The GAF further underlined the dangers of circulating unconfirmed reports, warning that such actions could destabilize national security and disrupt the peace of the country.

“GAF wishes to call on groups and individuals to do due diligence by cross checking whatever information they come about on the security services before spreading falsehood which leads to misinformation of the citizenry. Such actions tend to create unnecessary tension and also cause fear and panic in the country especially around this period.

GAF wishes to once again remind all and sundry that its doors are opened and they should not hesitate to contact the Department of Public Relations for any inquiries about the Institution. Anything that is done deliberately or inadvertently against the peace of the country should be avoided. GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation,” it stated.

  • GAF officer, 4 others plead not guilty to robbery, kidnapping

GAF officer, 4 others plead not guilty to robbery, kidnapping

A military officer, WOI Elorm John Ahiakpor, and four other individuals have pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery and kidnapping in connection with the abduction of a Dutch national.

The accused appeared before an Accra Circuit Court, where they faced charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and kidnapping.

The four accomplices are Silas Amewonye, a 25-year-old farmer; Farouk Nuodio, a 32-year-old trader; Daniel Kwesi Obiri Yeboah, also known as Aljazeera, a 49-year-old trader; and Michael Nana Addo, a 25-year-old carpenter.

The court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, heard the bail applications from the defense lawyers, Andy Vortia and Carlos De-Souza. Vortia, representing WOI Ahiakpor, argued that the charges were bailable and that the court should not rely solely on police claims. He pointed out that his client had no record of absconding and had served as a military officer for 24 years with an unblemished record.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kofi Anane, opposed the bail request, citing the gravity of the charges and the ongoing investigation. ASP Anane urged the court to consider the potential consequences if the accused were convicted.

After listening to both parties, the court adjourned the case to October 29, 2024.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Lodewijk Frederikus, a Dutch national, arrived in Ghana on October 17, 2024, to discuss a land purchase with Amewonye in Ningo Prampram. However, after staying with Amewonye and Nuodio for several days, Frederikus became suspicious of their behaviour and expressed his desire to return home.

On October 20, 2024, Amewonye allegedly locked Frederikus in his room and, with the help of the other accused, kidnapped him, demanding a ransom of 15,000 Euros. Frederikus attempted to negotiate the amount down to 5,000 Euros, but the accused insisted on 8,000 Euros.

When the ransom was delayed, the accused, excluding Amewonye, allegedly took Frederikus at gunpoint to a Stanbic ATM at Mataheko and forced him to withdraw GH¢6,000. Frederikus eventually made a distress call to the police, leading to his rescue and the arrest of the accused. During interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted to the offences.
