123,000 people have fled Gaza’s homes over destruction and terror – UN

The United Nations says that 123,538 people in Gaza had to leave their homes and stay within Gaza because they were afraid, needed protection, or their houses were destroyed.

According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), around 73,000 people are currently staying in schools for shelter.

Adnan Abu Hasna, who speaks on behalf of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), believes that the number of refugees will increase.

“He says that we give power to these schools, we give them food, clean water, help with feelings, and medical care. ”

In Gaza, there are 2. 3 million Palestinian people. Israel told people in certain areas to leave before they attacked with air strikes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that he is warning the people of Gaza to leave immediately, as they are preparing to take action with full force in all areas.

  • Israel floods Gaza’s hospital with bomb strikes

Israel floods Gaza’s hospital with bomb strikes

People in Gaza were happy on Saturday morning because Hamas shot many rockets at Israel and also attacked across the border, which killed people.

The next day, things looked completely different.

After the Israelis kept firing bombs, the people stayed inside their homes. There were more explosions on Sunday.

The noise was really scary. Buildings in the Gaza Strip were covered in thick, black smoke.

The military of Israel claims to have attacked more than 1,000 places in Gaza. These targets are places like military bases, houses where Hamas leaders live, and banks that are controlled by the militant group.

On Sunday morning, Israel carried out a notable attack on the Watan Tower in Gaza. This tower is an important place where internet providers are based.
Palestinian health officials are saying that over 400 people have died in Israeli air strikes on Gaza as a form of retaliation.

Many places don’t have electricity because Israel stopped giving Gaza power. Gaza’s supplier can only give 20% of the electricity they need.

We no longer have enough food and water.

On Sunday morning, while driving through the city center of Gaza, I noticed that roads were blocked by piles of debris. Stores were not open, except for a couple of bakeries where there were lines of people waiting.

The situation in Gaza has gotten even worse because of the increase in tension or conflict, which has made the already bad humanitarian conditions even more difficult.

The hospitals that don’t have enough resources are struggling to provide healthcare to a population of over two million people. They are desperately asking for people to donate blood.

Mahmoud Shalabi, who works for a charity called Medical Aid for Palestinians, called the main hospital in Gaza a “slaughterhouse”.

He said that a lot of people were lying on the ground in the emergency department. Shalabi said that there were a lot of dead bodies in the morgue and the medical staff were overwhelmed with the large number of injured people they were getting.
Later on Sunday, people in a certain area of Gaza City got text messages from the Israeli army telling them to go to a safe place before there would be attacks.

Over 20,000 people went to United Nations locations in the area, a UN spokesperson informed the BBC.

Hamas has been in charge of Gaza for the last 17 years. They are aware of what happens when they attack Israel, so they must have been prepared for the strong response from Israel.

The group supported by Iran has clearly stated that it is ready to fight against Israel. Hamas claims that it has been secretly bringing in weapons, even though there is a blockade by Israel and Egypt, and that it has been building up its own collection of weapons.

The group has promised to keep doing what they call “counter attacks”. After a break on Saturday night, it stated that it had shot 100 rockets at the southern Israeli town of Sderot.

People who live in Gaza have different feelings about this big conflict that has never happened before. Some people think that Hamas’ rocket attacks are a reason to be happy, but many are afraid that the fighting will go on for a very long time.

  • Panic and fear in Gaza as Israel retaliates

Panic and fear in Gaza as Israel retaliates

People in Gaza celebrated on Saturday morning after Hamas launched deadly cross-border operations and fired thousands of rockets into Israel.

The situation has drastically changed after a day.

People have been staying indoors following a night of nonstop Israeli shelling. All through Sunday morning, there were more explosions.

The noise has been really ominous. All around the Gaza Strip, structures have been engulfed in clouds of black smoke.

Since previous night, according to Hamas, 150 targets had been attacked. These include military installations, the residences of the militant group’s top officials, and banks controlled by Hamas.

The Watan Tower, a focal point for internet service providers in Gaza, was the target of one of this morning’s most serious Israeli strikes.

According to Hamas, more than 300 people have died in Israel’s attacks. About half of these victims are civilians, including women and children.

Many places don’t have electricity because Israel has stopped giving power to Gaza. The supplier in Gaza can only give 20% of the electricity that is needed.

Food and drink supplies have been reduced.

This morning, as I was driving through the centre of Gaza city, I noticed that roads were blocked by pieces of broken buildings. The stores were not open, except for a few bakeries where many people were waiting in line.

The situation in Gaza, which was already very bad, has become even worse because of the escalation.

The hospitals that don’t have enough supplies, and already have difficulty providing healthcare to a population of over 2 million, are urgently asking for people to donate blood.

Mahmoud Shalabi, who is in charge of a charity called Medical Aid for Palestinians in Gaza, called the city’s main hospital a place where many people are being killed.

He said that lots of people were lying on the ground in the emergency department. “Mr Shalabi said there were a lot of dead bodies in the morgue and the medical staff couldn’t handle all the injured people coming in. ”
On Sunday, the Israeli army sent text messages to residents in a certain area of Gaza City, telling them to find shelter before attacks occur. Over 20,000 individuals went to United Nations places in the area, as mentioned by a UN representative to the BBC.

Hamas has been in charge of Gaza for the last 17 years. They are aware of the outcome of attacking Israel, so they must have anticipated big strikes in response.

The group supported by Iran has stated that it is ready for a conflict with Israel. Hamas said it has been secretly bringing in weapons despite the blockades by Israel and Egypt and making its own collection of weapons.

The group has promised to keep doing what they call “counterattacks”. After a break during the night, it claimed to have shot 100 rockets towards the southern Israeli town called Sderot.

Regular people in Gaza have different feelings about this conflict, which has never happened before. Some people were happy about Hamas’ rocket attacks, but many think that the violence will go on for a very long time and that’s concerning.

  • Israel attack: PM declares Israel at war after 250 people killed in Gaza onslaught

Israel attack: PM declares Israel at war after 250 people killed in Gaza onslaught

Around 250 people were killed and 1,590 were injured in Israel when the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched its largest attack in a long time.

Many armed people from Gaza sneaked into towns in southern Israel when it was still dark outside. There were lots of rockets being shot during this time.

They captured Israeli soldiers and civilians and took them to Gaza.

Israel has attacked Gaza with multiple air strikes. According to doctors, this has caused the death of 232 people and injured 1,600.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is in a state of war and promised that Hamas, which governs Gaza, will face a very high cost for their actions.

The military in Israel has called upon many extra soldiers and is getting ready to start an operation in Gaza.

Right now, there is still fighting happening with militants who are still in some parts of southern Israel. Many rockets are being shot at cities and towns in Israel, including Tel Aviv and Rishon Lezion, during the evening.

Israel had a really bad situation happen – Palestinian militants with weapons were running around in the southern part of the country. This started on Saturday, which is the Jewish holy day and the festival of Simchat Torah.

Many people think that many gunmen went into Israel from different places. Some people broke through the fence around Gaza and others came in by boat.

It’s not clear how they were able to get through one of the strongest borders in the world.

Videos posted on social media showed shooting happening in Israeli villages and towns, like in the town of Sderot, which is very close to Gaza, only about 1. 6km away

Some people from different communities called Israeli news stations and said that they were stuck inside their homes or hiding in safer places.

I went outside and saw many dead terrorists, innocent people, and damaged cars with bullet holes. Many people’s bodies are crowded in Sderot and along the road, and in other places too, said Shlomi, a resident of Sderot.

Ofir Liebstein, who was the leader of a local council in southern Israel, was shot and killed during a fight with armed attackers while trying to protect his community.

Videos were shown of Israelis being taken as hostages, which was a completely new and unusual situation.
The BBC knows that militants have captured many soldiers and civilians. Some people were believed to be in small Israeli towns near the border, while others were taken to Gaza.

Hamas said it caught 53 “prisoners of war” including important officers, and they are keeping them in tunnels. In the past, the Israeli military has often attacked these tunnels during conflicts with militants in Gaza.

An Israeli military spokesperson said that both soldiers and civilians had been taken by force, and some soldiers, including Colonel Jonathan Steinberg, who was leading the Nahal infantry brigade, had been killed. But he said that the reports about a high-ranking military leader being taken against their will were not true.

Videos were also shared online showing Palestinians driving Israeli military vehicles that they had taken in Gaza.
At the same time that the group entered secretly, fighters in Gaza began firing many rockets towards Israel, even reaching cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

A few rockets got past Israel’s missile defense system, called Iron Dome, and caused damage to people’s homes and cars.

People who live in Tel Aviv said that they couldn’t remember a time when the streets were locked down and empty for such a long time.

“According to Gideon Levy, a writer and reporter from England, people are feeling a strong sense of surprise, shock, and fear about something that is going to happen in the future. ” “When the first rockets landed, I was still running in the park, and the noise was really loud. ”
During a meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that their main goal is to remove the hostile forces that entered their land and bring back safety and peace to the towns that were attacked.

Our second goal is to make the enemy pay a high cost in the Gaza Strip. The third goal is to strengthen other areas so that no one accidentally joins this war.

Many Israeli warplanes and other aircraft are bombing Gaza because of an attack, which is causing big explosions.

The Israeli military attacked 17 locations where Hamas soldiers train and four places where they plan their activities. They called this action “Operation Iron Swords”.

Afterwards, rockets destroyed the 11-story Palestine Tower in the center of Gaza City. The tower is home to Hamas radio stations on the top floor.

The Israeli air force attacked two buildings that were being used by high-ranking members of Hamas for terrorist activities. They told the people inside to leave before the attack.

Medical aid organization Medecins Sans Frontieres has stated that two healthcare workers, specifically a nurse and an ambulance driver, lost their lives due to Israeli attacks on two hospitals in Gaza.

According to Wafa, a news agency in Palestine, 10 regular people died when a house in the Shabora area of Rafah, in the southern part of Gaza, was attacked.

When it became nighttime, the electricity company in Israel turned off the power to Gaza. The power company in Gaza stated that most of the electricity in the area, around 80%, is supplied by Israel.

There was fighting in many places in the West Bank on Saturday. Palestinian doctors said that six Palestinians were killed after they got into fights with Israeli soldiers and got shot.

Hamas leader Mohammed Deif asked all Palestinians to join their military operation.

“We have decided to stop these actions by Israel, with God’s assistance. This is so that the enemy realizes they can no longer cause destruction without facing consequences,” he stated.

Ismail Haniyeh, who leads Hamas from outside of Palestine, said that groups in Palestine want to make the violence bigger by including the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Ghazi Hamad, a person who speaks for Hamas, said in an interview with the BBC that Iran supports the attack. Iran promised to support the Palestinian fighters until Palestine and Jerusalem are free.

The President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, who disagrees with Hamas, said that the Palestinian people have the right to protect themselves from the harmful actions of settlers and occupation soldiers.

Many countries around the world strongly disapprove of the attacks made by Hamas.

US President Joe Biden strongly criticized their actions and stated that Israel has the complete right to protect itself and its citizens.

“He said that terrorist attacks are never justified, and his administration strongly and consistently supports the security of Israel. ”

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, expressed shock about the news that innocent people have been attacked and taken away from their houses.

The Foreign Secretary of the UK, James Cleverly, strongly condemns the terrible attacks carried out by Hamas on innocent Israeli people.

Qatar’s government said that Israel is solely to blame for the ongoing increase in violence.

  • Israel risks long difficult war following Hamas onslaught from Gaza

Israel risks long difficult war following Hamas onslaught from Gaza

The Israeli military says that Hamas fighters from Gaza have entered Israel’s southern communities and killed around 300 people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has informed the citizens that they are entering a war that will be lengthy and tough.

Many armed people entered southern Israel, they killed soldiers and regular people, and they took a large number of hostages into Gaza, as said by the army.

On Sunday morning, the Israeli Air Force said it was attacking important buildings and systems in Gaza.

The Israeli army attacked southern Lebanon with big guns after mortars were shot from there towards Israeli positions in the disputed Mount Dov/Shebaa Farms area.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group said they carried out the attack to support the Palestinian resistance.

Over 300 people have died due to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza since Palestinian militants entered Israel from Gaza on Saturday morning, as confirmed by Palestinian health officials.

People living in Gaza got messages from Israel telling them to go to the city or seek safety in shelters.

The leader of Israel said in a message that they were forced into war because Hamas attacked them. They said the initial stage of the war would be over soon, as they were getting rid of most of the militants on their land. Israel will make sure its citizens are safe and succeed in their goals, he said.

The Israeli government has decided to stop providing electricity, fuel, and goods to Gaza.

Israel’s worst fear – Palestinian militants with weapons wandering around in the southern part of the country – started early on Saturday, during the Jewish day of rest and celebration known as Simchat Torah.

Gunmen broke through the fence separating Gaza from Israel. They entered Israel using motorbikes, paragliders, and by sea. The IDF spokesperson said there were hundreds of these people, and over 3,000 rockets were shot at Israel in one day.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said that they attacked many Israeli communities and IDF bases. They went from one house to another, searching inside.

They killed innocent Israeli people in their houses and then took more Israeli people to Gaza. I am referring to women, children, the elderly, and disabled individuals.

Disturbing videos showed Israeli people running scared from a desert festival, and women being forced into vehicles and taken away by kidnappers.

Israeli people were calling and informing the news channels that they were staying inside their houses because they were very afraid and worried about their safety. Fifteen people living in the town of Netiv HaAsara were killed by Hamas fighters.

In the town of Sderot, a person named Shlomi saw a lot of people lying on the ground along the road.

Over time, the Israeli military started to regain control over many of the southern communities. According to Israeli media, the hostages who were kept in a dining room in Kibbutz Be’er were released after 18 hours. Soon after, more updates said that soldiers had rescued people who were being held captive in the town of Ofakim. The assailants who were keeping them hostage were also killed.

US President Joe Biden said that America strongly supports Israel, which is currently being targeted by a terrorist group. Biden described the support as very strong and unwavering.

Hamas’s military group stated that they captured many more Israelis than just a few dozen, including important military leaders.

By the end of Saturday, over 1,500 people got hurt in Gaza and another 1,500 in Israel, according to officials.

The army said that if Hamas continues to use a very high level of violence, they will respond in a way that has never been seen before.

Thousands of reserve soldiers have been called up and are now getting ready to start a military operation on the ground in Gaza.

On Saturday, Israel attacked and destroyed a tall building called the Palestine Tower in the middle of Gaza City. This building had radio stations owned by Hamas on its roof.

The Israeli air force attacked buildings used by important members of Hamas for doing terrorist acts. They informed the people in the buildings to leave before the attack happened.

There was fighting in different places in the West Bank on Saturday. Palestinian doctors said that six Palestinians were killed during clashes with Israeli forces.

Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif asked all Palestinians to help with the group’s mission.

“We have decided to stop these Israeli offenses with the help of God, so that the enemy realizes they can no longer cause chaos without facing consequences,” he said.

Ismail Haniyeh, the leader who is not currently in his home country, said that Palestinian groups plan to make the fighting bigger in the West Bank and Jerusalem that is controlled by another country.

Ghazi Hamad, who speaks for Hamas, told the BBC that Iran supported the attack directly.

Mahmoud Abbas, the President of Palestine and a political opponent of Hamas, stated that the Palestinian people have the right to protect themselves from the violence caused by settlers and occupying forces.

Many countries strongly disapprove of the Hamas attacks.

The UN boss, António Guterres, said he was shocked by reports that innocent people were attacked and taken from their houses. The UK’s Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, firmly denounced the terrible attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians.

Saudi Arabia wants the fighting to stop right away. They have been warning about the dangers of the occupation and how the Palestinian people are being mistreated for a long time.

  • Israel hits targets in Gaza after sending explosive balloons across border

Israel hits targets in Gaza after sending explosive balloons across border

The Israeli army attacked Hamas targets in Gaza on Friday because militants from there flew balloons with fire towards Israel for the first time in a year.

The fighting started after Palestinians protested for over a week, sometimes using violence, along the barrier separating Gaza from Israel.

On Friday, Israeli forces shot and injured at least 28 people on the Gaza side of the fence, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

The weapons are not very complicated things – they are balloons filled with helium, like the ones you see at children’s birthday parties. They have explosives or devices attached to them which are set on fire before they are used.

The balloons were let go by a group called Ahfad Al-Nasser, or the Descendants of al-Nasser. This group is known for doing attacks using balloons that have explosives tied to them.

The balloon launches on Friday caused at least three fires in Israel, but they were all put out.

The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) attacked two places where Hamas was launching balloons, and another place where they said Hamas shot at Israeli soldiers.

The Israeli military said that no IDF soldiers were hurt.

It is not known right away if anyone died or got hurt in the Israeli attacks. The IDF said the attacks were done using a drone and a tank.

  • Five Palestinians killed in explosion near Gaza border wall

Five Palestinians killed in explosion near Gaza border wall

The burials have happened for five Palestinians who died in a blast in Gaza near the wall separating Israel.

Many people had joined two gatherings when the explosion happened on Wednesday evening.

The Israeli army said that some people tried to throw a bomb at their soldiers.

A Palestinian security source told the BBC that a homemade device, typically used to make a loud and annoying sound that can cause trouble, exploded while young men were trying to throw it.

Palestinian medics say that more than 20 people got hurt.

The IDF said that the protesters had already thrown explosives and grenades at soldiers before.

The IDF has shared a low-quality black and white video that shows an explosion near a strong wall built by Israel around Gaza. In the video, we can see a group of people quickly moving away from the explosion.

A video from Palestine was shown to the BBC. In the video, a lot of young men were near the Israeli barrier, about 2 meters away. Suddenly, there was a big explosion that seemed to immediately kill some of the protesters. You cannot see any Israeli military.

Saif Muhareb, a person who saw something, said he was with a group of about 50 individuals.

We discovered a dark thing that resembled a camera – it measured 10 centimeters wide and 50 centimeters long. I was standing at the back when someone touched it and it blew up.

There were big protests between 2018 and 2019 called the Great March of Return.

Israeli soldiers shot at people protesting every week, causing over 300 Palestinians to die and many others to get hurt, says the Palestinian health ministry. The Israeli army said it fired at individuals attempting to enter its land.

On Wednesday, there was a protest organized by Palestinian political groups, including the Hamas group that controls Gaza, to remember when Israel left the Gaza strip in 2005 without any agreement. Another protest was organized to express solidarity with Palestinian prisoners who are currently being held in Israeli prisons.

On Thursday morning, a group of people who were sad got together to move the dead bodies of the people who died in the big blast from Shifa Hospital, which is in the middle of Gaza City.

Wael al-Zard, who is a leader in the local Hamas group and gives religious talks at the big Mosque, had his son Baraa died. Baraa was 18 years old.

“He said that he feels very sad and his eyes are crying because he lost his son, who brings him a lot of happiness. ”

But we are grateful to God that I am proud to be the father of a hero who gave his life for his country. He made me feel confident and proud.

  • Three Islamic Jihad commanders and family members dead in Israeli strikes on Gaza

Three Islamic Jihad commanders and family members dead in Israeli strikes on Gaza

13 Palestinians were murdered, including three Islamic Jihad commanders and numerous family members, after Israeli jets and helicopters attacked numerous targets in Gaza overnight as part of what Israel claimed as an operation against “kingpin terrorists.”

Three of its commanders, together with their wives and kids, were acknowledged by the Palestinian terrorist group to have died in the operation.

According to the group, the al Quds Brigades commanders who were killed included Tariq Muhammad Ezzedine, one of the leaders of the military wing of the al Quds Brigades in the West Bank, Khalil Salah al Bahtini, commander of the northern region, and Jihad Shaker Al-Ghannam, secretary of the military council.

It later vowed a “response” to Israeli airstrikes, calling the attacks an “aggressive, heinous massacre.”

Hamas, the Palestinian militant movement that runs Gaza, issued a similar statement, promising a “firm response from the unified resistance forces, whose unity is manifested in its greatest form in the field.”

The Al Shifa hospital in Gaza said those killed were members of four families plus one other individual.

The dead included five women and four children, a list of the dead released by the Al-Shifa Medical Complex showed.

One of the Palestinian men killed in Israeli airstrikes was a prominent dentist, Jamal Khaswan, who died along with his wife and son, the Ministry of Health added. Khaswan was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Wafa Hospital, the ministry said, praising him as a scientific and practical man of great determination.

He held Russian citizenship, according to the Russian Representative Office in Ramallah. The Russian Mission said Khaswan and his wife left behind two orphaned children who are also Russian citizens.

The Ministry of Health added that 20 people had been injured, including three children and seven women.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it launched pre-dawn airstrikes on Gaza, saying it was a “response to incessant aggression on the part of the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization.”

IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht called the targets “kingpin terrorists” and insisted that the military “did as much as we could to focus on them.”

But he also conceded the IDF was “aware of some collateral,” an apparent reference to the wives and children who were also killed alongside those being targeted.

“If there were some tragic deaths, we’ll look into it and get back to you,” he said in response to reporters’ questions.

Islamic Jihad said Ghannam, 62, was also commander-in-chief of the al Quds Brigades and has been wanted for over 20 years, having survived five previous assassination attempts.

He had worked in Yasser Arafat’s Fatah and the Popular Resistance Committees, secular Palestinian militant groups that predate the emergence of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the group said.

The IDF accused Ghannam of coordinating weapons and money transfers between Islamic Jihad and Hamas, the militant group which runs Gaza. It called him one of the most senior members of Islamic Jihad.

Calling the strikes “Operation Shield and Arrow,” the IDF said its fighter jets and helicopters hit 10 Islamic Jihad targets, including what it said were “rocket production workshops in Khan Yunis,” weapon manufacturing sites, military compounds, a concrete manufacturing site and a military post in southern Gaza.

Video from Gaza showed explosions lighting up the night sky and the rubble from buildings hit by the strikes.

The latest violence came almost a week after Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza exchanged fire following the death of a prominent Palestinian hunger striker in an Israeli prison.

Israel conducted strikes on what it said were targets belonging to Hamas as dozens of rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel on May 2.

It followed the death of Palestinian detainee Khader Adnan, an Islamic Jihad former spokesman who became a symbol of Palestinian resistance to Israeli detention policies, in Israeli custody after 87 days of hunger strike.

IDF spokesman Hecht said planning for Tuesday’s operation began after the rocket fire from Gaza last week.

The strikes took place overnight Monday because of a convergence of intelligence information, weather and permissions, he said, adding some 40 IDF aircraft were involved in the operation. Hecht tweeted Tuesday morning just before 8 a.m. local time (1 a.m. ET) that the IDF had “stopped our strikes for now.”

Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen cut short a three-day official visit to India in the wake of the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.

He said he had received a security update immediately on landing in New Delhi on Tuesday, when he was due to travel to the city of Agra and then to the financial capital Mumbai on Wednesday, according to an itinerary published by India’s Ministry of External affairs.

Gaza is one of the most densely packed places in the world, an isolated coastal enclave of almost two million people crammed into 140 square miles.

Governed by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, the territory is largely cut off from the rest of the world by an Israeli blockade of Gaza’s land, air and sea dating back to 2007. Egypt controls Gaza’s southern border crossing, Rafah.

Israel has placed heavy restrictions on the freedom of civilian movement and controls the importation of basic goods into the narrow coastal strip.
Hecht said he did not know if there would be more follow up strikes.

“We don’t know yet where we go. It’s still early,” he said. “We’re ready for as long as it takes. The big question is Hamas. What will they decide to do?”

  • Israel unveils airstrikes on Gaza over rocket attacks

Israel unveils airstrikes on Gaza over rocket attacks

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that after a missile attack from the coastal enclave, Israel began airstrikes targeting alleged weapons production and storage facilities in Gaza.

The IDF said in a statement that “fighter planes hit a weapons manufacturing plant” in central Gaza operated by Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organisation in charge of Gaza.

The statement stated that “concurrently, a military installation belonging to the Hamas Terrorist Organization in the northern Gaza Strip which was also employed as a naval weapons storage depot was targeted.”

Earlier Thursday, the IDF said five rockets fired from Gaza toward Israeli territory, including the cities of Ashkelon and Sderot, were intercepted and another rocket fell in an open area.

The airstrikes come after the deaths of at least 11 Palestinians in Nablus in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, which occurred during a raid by the Israeli military that also left at least 500 injured, Palestinian officials said Thursday. One of the dead targeted in the Nablus raid was a Hamas member, and two were Islamic Jihad commanders, the two militant groups said earlier.

“Our teams dealt with 488 injuries during the occupation forces’ invasion into Nablus, including 103 injuries of live bullets taken to hospitals in Nablus,” the Palestinian Red Crescent said. The other injuries included tear gas inhalation and shrapnel wounds, they said. The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the numbers.

The raid in Nablus lasted about four hours and, unusually, took place in broad daylight because the IDF said it had intelligence on where the suspects were. The IDF accused them of being responsible for the death of an Israeli soldier and of posing an imminent threat.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday that Israel would “settle accounts with those who attack Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers,” praising the previous day’s Israeli military raid into Nablus.

Netanyahu said that raid targeted “three terrorists” who “shot and murdered Staff Sergeant Ido Baruch last October and they were about to carry out additional attacks against us.”

“I would like to commend the ISA and IDF Intelligence for the precise intelligence,” that led to the raid, the Israeli prime minister said, referring to the Israeli Security Agency, the Shin Bet, and the Israel Defense Forces. He also thanked “the soldiers who acted with heroism and confidence under fire.”

The United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process said late Wednesday he was “appalled by the loss of civilian lives” in the raid.

“I am deeply disturbed by the continuing cycle of violence,” Tor Wennesland said in a statement. “I urge all sides to refrain from steps that could further enflame an already volatile situation.”

The occupied West Bank has been rocked by a series of lethal Israeli military raids in the past year, as tensions in Israel and the Palestinian territories remain sky-high in a region riven by bloodshed.

An Israeli raid in the city of Jenin in January caused the deadliest day for Palestinians in the West Bank in over a year, according to CNN records, with at least 10 Palestinians killed on the day and one dying later of his wounds. One day later, at least seven civilians died in a shooting near a synagogue in Jerusalem – which Israel deemed one of its worst terror attacks in recent years.

This comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leads a cabinet that has been described as the most far right and religious in the country’s history.

Netanyahu previously told CNN’s Jake Tapper that people can get “hung up” on peace negotiations with the Palestinians, saying he has opted for a different approach.

As relations between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants boil over, CNN’s Hadas Gold said the scenes on Wednesday reflected those “not seen since the second intifada,” or uprising.

“Even for the last year and a half or so here, that has been a very violent and deadly year, these numbers are some of the highest I’ve seen in my time here,” she added.

Israel strike Gaza militant sites following rockets fired after deadly raid

In response to rocket fire, Israel has launched airstrikes on Gaza as tensions rise following a deadly army raid in the occupied West Bank.

According to Israeli reports, six rockets were fired, and Israel responded by attacking what it claimed were militant sites.

No one on either side was reported to have been injured.

After nine Palestinians were killed in the Jenin raid, which Israel claimed was carried out to stop “imminent terrorist attacks,” militants threatened to retaliate.

Two rockets were fired around midnight (22:00 GMT Thursday) but were intercepted by Israel’s anti-rocket Iron Dome system, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said. Air strikes swiftly followed, targeting what the IDF said was an “underground rocket manufacturing site” in the central Gaza Strip belonging to the Islamist militant group Hamas, which governs the territory.

A second salvo of rockets was fired hours later, landing in open ground, shot down or falling back down in Gaza, the military said. Israel subsequently hit a site which it said was “a significant centre of Hamas terrorist activities” in the northern Gaza Strip.

No group admitted to firing the rockets, though Israel holds Hamas responsible for all attacks from Gaza.

The overnight exchange followed the deadliest incident of its kind in years after Israeli forces entered the West Bank city of Jenin to arrest an Islamic Jihad “terror squad”. The IDF said it was acting on accurate intelligence about plans by the cell to attack Israelis.

Forces surrounded a building in the city’s urban refugee camp where an intense gun battle erupted. Israel said three armed suspects were “neutralised” after they opened fire, while a fourth suspect surrendered. The IDF said troops were shot at by other Palestinian gunmen and returned fire, hitting targets.

The militant Palestinian Islamic Jihad group and Hamas said their fighters had targeted the troops with gunfire and improvised explosive devices.

The Palestinian health ministry said two civilians, including a 61-year-old woman, were among those killed. Twenty people were also wounded, four of them seriously, it said.

The Palestinian presidency accused Israel of a “massacre” and later announced it had ended co-ordination with Israel on security matters.

A 10th Palestinian was meanwhile shot and killed during a confrontation with Israeli troops in the town of al-Ram, near Jerusalem, as residents protested against the Jenin raid, Palestinian officials said.

At least 30 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank so far this year, including militants and civilians, as the military continues operations there.

Last year in the West Bank more than 150 Palestinians were killed, nearly all by Israeli forces. The dead included unarmed civilians, militant gunmen and armed attackers.

A series of attacks by Palestinians and Israeli Arabs targeting Israelis, as well as militant gunfire at troops during arrest raids, meanwhile killed more than 30 people including civilians, police and soldiers.

  • Hell revisited: Surviving Israel’s bombs to get married

For Palestinians like Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish, planning a wedding is about hazard, hope and painful memories of loss.

This is a story that needs to be told. It needs to be told because it conveys – better than any human rights report – the capricious cruelties and indignities Palestinians endure in Gaza and what is possible when humanity trumps hate.

It is also, at times, the stuff that nightmares and some movies are made of.

Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish told me the story of hazard and hope when we spoke by phone shortly after he returned to his adopted home in Toronto, Canada, earlier this month.

The dogged, universally acclaimed Palestinian-Canadian doctor and teacher have devoted his life to harmony and healing. He is a man of peace who knows the indelible costs of war.

On January 16, 2009, two Israeli tank shells obliterated his home in Gaza. His daughters, Bessan, 21, Mayar, 15, and Aya, 13, and a niece, Noor, 17, were killed. Dr Abuelaish discovered their dismembered bodies.

The 67-year-old makes his way to Gaza and the West Bank often to tend to and provide for other Palestinians – especially children. It is, he says, a duty.

In late July, Dr Abuelaish arrived in Gaza with three of his surviving children, Dalal, Abdallah, and, the bride-to-be, 29-year-old Shatha, to share with family and friends the joy of her upcoming wedding to Mohammed, a 32-year-old Palestinian-Jordanian.

Their long-distance courtship – spanning the United States, Canada, and Saudi Arabia – was a year in the making. It began with exchanged notes, then more fulsome conservations. Although their families had known each other for years, Shatha and Mohammed – both computer engineers – met in Buffalo, New York for the first time in April. By May, they were engaged. The nuptials, set for August 9, would be held in Amman, Jordan.

Excited and brimming with anticipation, Shatha welcomed her extended family in Gaza – 80 people in all – at the traditional henna party on July 30 to celebrate. She didn’t know then that she might be barred from traveling to attend her own wedding, for one reason alone: She is Palestinian.

Israel invades every aspect of Palestinian life – even their love lives. Early in September, the ministry of defence issued a “directive” ordering foreigners to report if they had become smitten with a Palestinian. Israel’s war on who, when, and where Palestinians can marry is an old, grotesque bureaucratic affront to decency.

Dr Abuelaish had planned to depart Gaza on August 4 joined by Shatha, Dalal, and Abdallah, for Ramallah in the West Bank. From there, they would enter Jordan via the Allenby Bridge.

But those plans became casualties of this fact: Gaza is a prison and Israel is the prison’s warden. Israel decides who and what can come and go, who lives or dies, and when, of course, it chooses to raid, bomb or invade the narrow strip of Palestinian soil.

On August 2, Israel stopped rail traffic and closed roads along the Gaza border after it arrested an Islamic Jihad commander in the Jenin refugee camp, during a raid in which a Palestinian child was also shot dead. The brewing prospect that military tensions would escalate turned Shatha’s excitement and anticipation into fear and foreboding.

For Dr Abuelaish, it was hell revisited. “We couldn’t get out,” he said.

A father who had already lost three daughters and a niece during an Israeli invasion was confronting the unimaginable horror that Shatha, Dalal and Abdallah were at similar, lethal risk in Gaza. “War does not discriminate,” Dr Abuelaish said. “In Gaza, you wait and ask: Who will be next?”

So, rather than wait, he acted to protect his children and to keep his promise to Shatha: She would be married in Amman on the date and time of their choosing, not Israel’s.

Their improbable odyssey out of Gaza would be dangerous and the outcome uncertain.

On August 3, Dr Abuelaish enlisted the help of influential contacts and friends on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, made over decades attempting to mend that intransigent divide. Despite enjoying Canadian citizenship, Dr Abuelaish elected not to approach the country’s diplomats in Tel Aviv or Ramallah. He was convinced they would have just blamed him for putting his family in jeopardy by bringing them to Gaza.

On August 4, Dr Abuelaish was told by a Palestinian source that he and his family would be able to get out later that evening through Erez, the only crossing for people between Gaza and Israel. Accompanied by Palestinian drivers and guides, two golf carts carrying the family and their luggage made the short, treacherous journey towards the checkpoint.

Meanwhile, Israel appeared poised to launch what it would soon describe as a “pre-emptive” assault on Gaza designed, once more, to pummel and terrorise Palestinians into submission. Given the looming danger, Dr Abuelaish was urged to turn back. He refused.

They arrived at the checkpoint at 10pm. Private Israeli security contractors spent 90 minutes checking the Abuelaishs’ credentials and luggage and ordered the family to leave for Bethlehem without their belongings since the Israeli military was anxious to close the crossing. Again, Dr Abuelaish refused.

    The Israelis relented.

A documentary crew – making a film on Dr Abuelaish’s life and work – arranged to meet him and his family on the Israeli side of the border and ferry them by van to Bethlehem using a maze of sandy, unfamiliar back roads. They were escorted briefly by Israeli security.

Relieved and thankful, Dr Abuelaish credits the co-operation of Israelis and Palestinians for his family’s safe passage out of Gaza. “They made the impossible possible,” Dr Abuelaish said. “I will never forget.” And yet, his happiness was tinged with regret and worry for the Palestinians left behind in Israel’s crosshairs.

Early on August 5, Dr Abuelaish’s family finally made the 2km (1.2 mile) crossing into Jordan.

That afternoon, Israel began to bombard Gaza. Most of the 49 Palestinians killed were civilians. Seventeen were children.

Among the dead was 30-year-old Ismail Dweik. Since June, he had been engaged to Abeer Harb. The couple had spent months preparing for their wedding. On August 6, Harb waited six hours for her fiancé’s body to be removed from under the rubble of the shattered remnants of his home.

Three days later, Shatha married Mohammed at a hotel in Amman in front of 150 guests. Their wedding was, Dr Abuelaish said, “a miracle” fashioned by “good people who believe in hope, rather than hatred, in fulfilling dreams, rather than crushing them, in being human, rather than inhuman”.

Still, Dr Abuelaish admits that sadness and guilt are his constant companions. “I feel the pain and suffering of my brothers and sisters in Palestine,” he said. “I live it, too. Every moment of every day. There must be another way.”

More than anything, Dr Abuelaish misses his late wife, Nadia, who had died in 2008 of leukemia, and his lost daughters who ought to have been by their sister’s side in Amman. “They were missing,” he said. “The happiness I felt was incomplete because we were supposed to be together. Alive and together.”

  • Two “Israel collaborators” executed by Hamas in Gaza

The Hamas-run interior ministry has announced that two Palestinian males allegedly working with Israel have been executed in the Gaza Strip.

The individuals were not identified in the statement; it just provided their names and ages, but it said they had provided intelligence that had resulted in the deaths of Palestinians.

On the grounds of murder, three further people were also put to death.

Human rights groups have previously condemned such executions by Hamas – the militant group which runs Gaza.

Since 2007 when they asserted control over Gaza, the Hamas-run authorities have carried out at least 27 executions, most recently in April 2017.

The two men accused of spying for Israel were arrested in 2009 and 2015 and “convicted by a court of treason and conspiring with foreign parties”, the interior ministry statement said.

It added that four were hanged and one was executed by the firing squad because he was a policeman.

Security sources told the BBC that one of those executed was a Hamas policeman who used his weapon to kill his father-in-law and a 13-year-old girl after a family dispute last July.

The crime sparked protests in the Beit Lahia area, north of Gaza, during which houses and shops were burned.

Israel occupied the Gaza Strip during the 1967 Middle East war. In 2005, it withdrew its troops and some 7,000 settlers.

  • Gaza: Palestinian militants hit back after Israeli airstrike kills senior commander

Sirens have been heard in southern and central Israel, with people in Tel Aviv also saying they could hear booms.

At least 12 people have died, including a senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), as a result of Israeli airstrikes, officials have said.

A blast was heard in Gaza City on Friday and smoke was seen coming from the seventh floor of a tall building.

The PIJ said it had responded by firing more than 100 rockets toward Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv.

TV stations appeared to show a number of missiles being shot down by air defense systems, with no reports of casualties.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said that 84 people were wounded, with a senior Islamic Jihad commander, a 23-year-old woman, and a five-year-old girl among the dead.

The strike comes after days of tensions following the arrest of a senior militant in the occupied West Bank on Monday.

Israel had closed roads around Gaza earlier this week and sent reinforcements to the border, in anticipation of retaliation.
