  • Former Ex-President Mahama charges GFA to raise standard in Premier League

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has urged the Ghana Football Association to raise the standard of the Premier League in bid to get supporters to the various stadia.

The Premier League resumes this weekend after an Accra High Court dismissed the Application for Injunction filed by Ashanti Gold against the GFA.

Asante Kotoko will clash with rivals King Faisal at the Baba Yara Sports stadium on Monday while Hearts of Oak host Bibiani Gold Stars at the Accra Sports stadium on Saturday.

“We know that under this administration, the GFA has brought some more vitality into our football and we are all supporting this administration to make sure we move football to the next level,” former President Mahama said as quoted by ghanafa.org.

“I know there are challenges in the domestic League because our people are more interested in the foreign League and so people don’t come to the stadium as they should but it is normally a good family entertainment, but we need to raise the standard so people will love to come to the stadium.”

He added, “There has been concerns about refereeing and so it depresses the quality of the league but we have faith that you have all that in hand and we will continue to support you.”

Hearts of Oak are yet to win a game this season, having lost one and drawn two of the three matches played this season.

The Phobians are 14th on the league table with two points after three matches.

The Premier League resumes this weekend after an Accra High Court dismissed the Application for Injunction filed by Ashanti Gold against the GFA.

The applicant failed to meet two of the three legal requirements needed for the grant of an injunction of this nature especially on the balance of convenience.

The court concluded that greater hardship will be visited on the GFA, the current 18 clubs of the Premier League, the Players, the Sponsors, Referees, Match Commissioners and other key service providers.

The court awarded cost of GHc20,000 against AshantiGold SC.

  • Ex-President Mahama lauds GFA boss Kurt Okraku for bringing vitality into football

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has showered praises on Kurt Okraku led administration for bringing vitality into Ghana football after taking over from the Normalisation Committee.

Okraku and his Executive Council took over the reins of Ghana Football in October 2019 after he secured votes in the third round of the GFA elections.

Prior to that, the sport was in the hands of a Normalisation Committee chaired by Business mogul Dr. Kofi Amoah for about 16-months following the Anas Expose that sought to expose some corrupt officials in Ghana football.

“My doors are open and if there is anything you think as a former President, I can do to bring in any moral encouragement, don’t hesitate to let me know.”

Before that, Alexander Djiku, Tariq Fosu, Joseph Wollacott, Denis Odoi, Elisha Owusu, Daniel Kofi Kyereh, and Antoine Semenyo, among others have within the last couple of years switched nationality to play for Ghana.

“I have a lot of confidence in the players that are being selected and I am happy that many of our Ghanaian players in the diaspora under your leadership are being brought in to play for the Black Stars,” President Nana Akufo Addo said in a meeting with the GFA Executive Council on Thursday.

“I think you have done very well to go out there to convince them to come and play for us and it couldn’t have been any better so as Politicians, football administrators, let’s help them to settle and enjoy their trade.

  • CK Akonnor lifts lid on why he switched his love to Kotoko as a Hearts fan

Former Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has disclosed that his experience during his time as coach of Asante Kotoko was key as he switched to love the Porcupine Warriors despite being Hearts of Oak fan.

Akonnor was appointed as the head coach of Kotoko, replacing Paa Kwesi Fabin in 2018 on a two-year deal.

He served for nine months, helping them to win the 2019 GFA Normalisation Committee Special Competition and qualify for the 2019/20 CAF Champions League. In July 2019, he was sacked by Kotoko and replaced by Kjetil Zachariassen.

“To be honest with you I was Hearts of Oak supporter but I became to love Kotoko because of what I experienced when I went there. My house, my family were all Hearts supporters. My father is Hearts of Oak man,” he told Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana

“I was seen in more professional way. If am with Kotoko I want to beat Hearts and if am with Hearts I want to beat Kotoko. No doubt about it.”

Akonnor added, “So when you went to Hearts of Oak did you feel like you have come home? “I felt like I was working and I had to be professional, give all my best for the team. I don’t look at it on that fan perspective but as a job that has been given they pay me so I have to give my best to the club.”

  • I left a lot of money for GHALCA – JY Appiah

JY Appiah, a former GHALCA boss has stated that he left the association in good shape financially.

The experienced administrator said when he hears GHALCA is struggling financially and they don’t have any power it saddens him.

GHALCA was set up during the military coup led by General I. K Acheampong between 1972 to 1973.

JY Appiah revealed that GHALCA was giving money to clubs and the Ghana Football Association as loans.

“Roughly I spent 20 years at GHALCA and when we were leaving office we left a fortune there. During my time we built an office and the old one was destroyed so we had to go into agreement with Sports Council so where they are now they will be there for 35 years. The money we left the people that came in took some to the World Cup, African Cup of Nations,” he said on Peace FM as monitored by footballghana.com

“We were the first to buy a car and also gave GFA money as loan about 400,000 dollars. We also gave teams going to Africa loans payment of allowances turned in to a fight. At least not less than 500,000 dollars GHALCA executives per say I wasn’t sure if they received allowance. The late Jordan said if we don’t use the money in the future stupid people will come and spend it,”

“I remember the executive committee of the FA sitting allowance was 10 cedis Acheampong came in and urged us to increase it to 15 cedis. What we were doing they said it was sacrificial, fight for the interest of the clubs sports council was dominating printing of tickets sports council was handling that we had to fight very hard before the FA started printing tickets for the clubs. Sport council then stayed away from selling tickets so we were fighting for the freedom of the clubs,”

  • RE: Soldier nabbed for snatching gh₵23,000 from a civilian

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) would want to refute a false story that claimed a soldier, Private Asare Boateng, had been detained for stealing GH23,000 from a civilian.

GAF wishes to state categorically that the suspect is an imposter. He is not a Soldier neither is he a Bandsman at the Signal Regiment or a Civilian Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

In furtherance to this, GAF wishes to place on record that on Friday 16 September 2022, the Military Police in Takoradi arrested Asare Boateng dressed in camouflage uniform, for posing as a Soldier and extorting monies from unsuspecting civilians at Elmina in the Central Region.

During interrogation, Asare Boateng confessed to engaging in impersonation and extortion.

The Military Police subsequently handed him over to the Kwasimintim Police Station at Takoradi for further action as required by law.

GAF therefore wishes to emphasise that the suspect (Asare Boateng) is not a Soldier and not affiliated to any Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces contrary to the reports in the media and therefore should not be regarded as such.

In the same view, GAF wishes to entreat the media to take advantage of its open door policy and to seek clarifications on such matters in order to avoid the publication of misleading reports that drags GAF into disrepute.

GAF also wishes to assure the general public that it will continuously work with all stakeholders to weed out criminal elements in the society, including any uniformed personnel who engages in illegal activity so that the nation can have a secured environment for socio-economic development.

  • Kwakye Ofosu tackles Kofi Bentil over comment against new Black Stars players

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has defended the decision by management of the Black Stars to include players who have either switched nationality or chosen to represent the national team.

According to him, the Black Stars squad needs to be strengthened ahead of the World Cup even if the new players did not participate in the qualifiers.

He stated in a Facebook post on September 22 that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) took the right decision in getting more quality players to revamp the Black Stars squad to correct the significant weaknesses.

Kwakye Ofosu was reacting to comments made by Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, who said he will not be happy even if the new Black Stars players win the World Cup for Ghana in making a case for players who played in the qualifiers but have since lost their place.

“There were significant weaknesses in the team that qualified which needed correction and strengthening.
We have a responsibility to give our country the very best chance possible at performing well at the World Cup against much higher quality opposition than what we faced during the qualification series.

“I think the GFA has taken the right step to inject more quality into our team. Besides, it is not a total overhaul. It is actually only 5 new players out of 26,” he wrote on his page.

    What Kofi Bentil said

The Vice president of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, expressed his dissatisfaction with the inclusion of new Black Stars players .

He contended that it was unfair for some players to qualify for others who didn’t participate in the qualification to come and play.

“Whether they win or not, it can’t be right for some to qualify and others to play! If you were committed you should have shown it when we were struggling to qualify! I can’t be happy with such injustice even if you win the World Cup,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Since Ghana’s qualification for their 4th World Cup, several players of Ghanaian descent have switched nationality to represent the country.

While some football fans feel it would be proper to beef up the squad with some of these players, the vice president of IMANI Africa thinks otherwise.

Some players like Tariq Lamptey, Inaki, Nico Williams, Ransford Yeboah, Stephan Ambrosius and others recently switched nationalities to play for Ghana.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will test their strength today in a friendly match against Brazil.

  • GFA Boss Kurt Okraku hints on Mohammed Salisu’s decision to play for Black Stars

Ghana Football Association [GFA] president, Kurt Okraku has hinted at Mohammed Salisu’s decision on playing for the Black Stars.

The Southampton center-back has grabbed the headlines for turning down a chance to feature for the country.

The former Real Valladolid defender turned down chances during CK Akonnor and Milovan Rajevac’s reign as head coaches.

Ahead of Ghana’s 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria in March, the centre back turned down a chance when Otto Addo and his technical team handed him a call-up, citing he needs more time.

He has subsequently left out of the Black Stars squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers against Madagascar and the Central African Republic [CAR].

However, a post by Kurt Okraku on his official Facebook page indicated that Salisu is ready to feature for the country.

“Great seeing you with that big smile,” Okraku wrote.

“Proud son of the land who is proud to give back what football has given him…Ready to serve and looking forward to our common future with all the positive energy in you.

“God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong,” he added.

  • GFA comfortable with Otto Addo handling two coaching roles with Ghana & Dortmund

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has disclosed that they are ‘okay’ with Otto Addo handling two coaching roles with the Black Stars and Borussia Dortmund.

GFA believes the dual roles will not get in the way of adequately preparing the Black Stars for the upcoming 2023  Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Otto Addo confirmed last week that Dortmund have given him the permission to coach Ghana during the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year as well as handle Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers which would commence with a home match against Madagascar on June 1.

The Association is closing in on appointing the 46-year-old as permanent Ghana coach as well as other members of the Black Stars technical team.

The Otto Addo-led team qualified the Black Stars to the global showpiece following a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the final play-offs of the World Cup at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja in March.

The Technical team was made up of Aston Villa U-19 coach George Boateng and Mas-ud Didi Dramani of Nordsjaelland with Chris Hughton serving as Technical Advisor.

Otto Addo became first Ghanaian to have represented Ghana at the World Cup and also qualified the team to the Mundial as a coach.

Ghana have been placed in Group H together with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea for the World Cup which is scheduled for November 21 to December 18 in Qatar.

  • I feel sad when watching Ghana Premier Leauge matches on TV GFA PRO

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association(GFA), Henry Asante Twum has said that he feels sorry when watching the Ghana Premier League (GPL) on television.

Henry Asante Twum explained that poor nature of pitches used by GPL clubs fill him with so much angst.

He admitted that the situation makes marketing the league challenging.

“Maybe we need to find a way to keep our pitches in healthy condition because it affects our product in terms of marketing,” he added.

  • Find out how much Milovan Rajevac will pay GFA if he resigns

Ghanaians have shared their frustrations with the Black Stars following the team’s elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with just a point in a group that had Morocco, Gabon, and Comoros.

Many are pointing fingers at the head coach, Milovan Rajevac, who they believe is unfit to lead the team back to its glory days.

In the three games played, Ghana lost to Morocco, drew with Gabon before losing to Comoros, a loss that sent the Black Stars packing.

Some want the Serbian sacked after the disgraceful performance in Cameroon. Others would want to see the manager walk away.

However, parts of Milo’s contract posted by Joy News reporter, Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, show the manager will incur a cost of US$200,000 if he resigns.

Speaking after Ghana’s defeat to Comoros, the 68-year-old insisted that he will not resign.

“I will not resign because I came to take this team to the World Cup,” Milovan Rajevac said after the game.

The Black Stars will know their Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers playoffs opponents next month before the game in March.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has told the Ghana Football Association to fire the coach following a meeting on Friday, January 21, 2022.

The report further shows the GFA is unwilling to dismiss the expatriate and a forced dismissal by the Ministry will lead to charges from FIFA.

This is because only associations have the ultimate right to axe a national team coach. Although, the ministry pays the salary.

The Serbian was recently in Europe to scout and interact with some of the players he intends to invite for the tournament.

The Executive Council of the GFA are expected to scrutinize, reduce and approve the squad.

The Black Stars are part of 24 countries who will participate in the tournament set for January 7, 2022 in Cameroon.

The Black Stars are expected to pitch camp in Qatar for the tournament with three pre-AFCON friendlies already lined up.

  • Asante Kotoko threaten GFA with CAS after ruling on Maxwell Konadus case

Asante Kotoko has expressed their disagreement with the Ghana Football Association’s decision ordering the club to pay an amount totalling US$41,000 to former Coach, Maxwell Konadu.

The issue relates to coach Konadu reporting the club to the Player Status Committee of the GFA for wrongful dismissal.

In their ruling, the Committee explained declined the request of Maxwell Konadu seeking $60,000 in damages and legal costs.

Instead, they ordered Asante Kotoko to pay the former Coach $36,000 as residual salary, GH¢30,000 as outstanding signing on fee, and a further GH¢2000 as an outstanding winning bonus.

In its statement, Asante Kotoko indicated that they disagree with the ruling and plan to exhaust all legal remedies available, even if it means proceeding to the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

Asante Kotoko sacked Maxwell Konadu in December 2017, after CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah unilaterally terminates his contract.

The aggrieved coach decided to take the matter to the Player Status Committee to seek relief for wrongful dismissal.

  • GFA approach absurd, primitive and backward – GFA

Two-time African champions Asante Kotoko have served the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with a letter, threatening to withdraw from the collective Premier League (GPL) TV rights sold to Chinese broadcasting firm StarTimes.

The Porcupine Warriors have been at war with the national football’s governing body following a heated disagreement over the club’s attempt to film its league opener against Eleven Wonders for educational (performance analysis) purposes in Accra on Sunday.

Match officials initially held off Kotoko’s attempt to film the game with their newly-acquired football videoing technology, arguing the activity infringed on the broadcasting agreement with StarTimes. The impasse saw the Porcupine Warriors threaten to abandon the game, delaying kick-off for about 15 minutes. The club, arguably Ghana’s biggest, ultimately had their way.

The GFA has been quick to issue a warning to the club about any future attempts, drawing a prompt response from Kotoko who held no punches in their reply.

“In your letter, you stated that filming of matches infringes on your contractual obligation with StarTimes Ghana. To this end, we wish to request a copy of the contract between the GFA and StarTimes to enable us to ascertain our rights and obligations and the relevant breaches with regards to clubs filming their matches,” part of the Kotoko statement read.

“If we do not receive our copy of the contract by Monday, November 23rd, we would not be in a position to honor any obligations towards StarTimes since we cannot honor obligations without knowing our rights.

“We wish to posit that your decision to stop clubs from filming matches only for educational purposes is with due respect arbitrary and against the provision of the Ghana Premier League Regulations (2019).

    https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1329421104155398149&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ghanaweb.com%2FGhanaHomePage%2FSportsArchive%2FGFA-approach-absurd-primitive-and-backward-Kotoko-1113805&siteScreenName=TheGhanaWeb&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=550px

In the GFA’s warning letter against the filming of matches by clubs, it urged clubs to rely on StarTimes for match footage for their performance analysis activities or face disciplinary action.

Kotoko, however, maintains “as a progressive club, we are sorry to tell you that we cannot rely on the post-match footage for StarTimes for technical analyses since it does not provide the necessary ingredients, especially for analysis.

“Should you continue to insist on this absurd, primitive and backward approach to the development of the game, we would instruct you to furnish us with your account details in which we would refund the $5,000 [€4,213] out of the $15,000 [€12,639] you were supposed to pay to clubs as sponsorship packages from StarTimes and also instruct you of our decision to cease dealing with StarTimes.”

The Porcupine Warriors, Caf Champions League winners in 1970 and 1983, are the most successful club in the history of the Ghana Premier League, having clinched the title on 23 occasions.

In the 2019 African Sports Centre for Data Research and Technology (ASC) Ghana Premier League Report, 41 percent of respondents in the nationwide survey declared as fans of Kotoko, 14% more than archrivals Hearts of Oak.

The latest dispute has seen fans of Kotoko launch a barrage of attacks on the GFA and TV partners StarTimes, particularly on social media.

In January, StarTimes signed a five-year agreement with the GFA worth $5.25m [€4.42 million] to be the exclusive television rights owner of the Ghana Premier League.

  • NSA inspects Accra Sports Stadium ahead of 2020 GPL

Officials of the National Sports Authority (NSA) on Friday, October 30, inspected the Accra Sports Stadium, which has been under renovation over the past months.

  • Medeama SC facing transfer ban

Tarkwa-based Ghana Premier League outfit Medeama SC is in danger of suffering a transfer ban, FMiG can confirm.

The ban to be slapped on them by the Ghana Football Association will be in compliance with an FA Appeals Committee decision.

Per the decision, the club is supposed to pay its former player, Nathaniel Asamoah the sum of $54,000 as a result of monies owed him as part of an agreement between both parties when the player was transferred to Moroccan side Raja Casablanca.

Asamoah transferred to Raja in August 2015 in a move worth $150,000. Per the arrangement between the player and his former club, he was due 40% of the transfer fee which Medeama has failed to pay till date.

Aside paying Asamoah, Medeama SC is also supposed to pay the Ghana FA the sum of $15,000, representing 10% of the overall transfer fee.

In enforcing an earlier ruling by its Appeals Committee, the Ghana FA has charged Medeama SC to pay Asamoah the above-quoted amount before November 18 or face sanctions.

Among the sanctions include deductions of 3 points for every league match played until the payment is made in full after elapsing of the November 18 date and also a transfer ban (domestic and international).

  • GFA suspends Techiman City from all activities until next Congress

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in the exercise of its powers under Article 39(n) of the GFA Statutes 2019 has suspended Techiman City Football Club provisionally until the next Congress of the GFA for violating the Statutes of the Association.

Article 39(n) of the GFA Statutes 2019 states as follows: â€œThe Executive Council shall have the following powers: Dismiss a member of a body of GFA provisionally or suspend a Member of GFA provisionally until the next Congress”.

Techiman City Football Club on Friday, August 28, 2020, issued a Writ against the GFA and filed an Ex-parte Motion against the GFA to place an interlocutory injunction on the recently held 26th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association.

It is very clear from the admission requirements under Article 13 and 16(1)(f) of the GFA Statutes 2019 that a member of the GFA will not take matters of interpretation and application of the FIFA, CAF and GFA Statutes, Regulations, decisions and directives to the ordinary courts, unless the FIFA Statutes or regulations, CAF Statutes or the GFA regulations, or binding national law, provide for a stipulate recourse to Ordinary courts.

Where there are violations, Article 17.1 of the GFA Statues 2019 states that “the Congress is responsible for suspending a Member. The Executive Council may, however, temporarily suspend a Member that seriously and/or repeatedly violates its obligations as a Member with immediate effect. The suspension approved by the Executive Council shall last until the next Congress, unless the Executive Council has lifted it in the meantime”.

Following this decision of the Executive Council, Techiman City Football Club is suspended from all GFA activities including the upcoming 2020/2021 football season until the next GFA Congress decides the fate of the club as prescribed under Article 17 and 18 of the GFA Statutes.

Article 17(3) of the GFA Statutes states that “a suspended Member shall lose its membership rights. Other Members may not entertain sporting contact with a suspended Member. The Disciplinary Committee may impose further sanctions”.

Consequently, Techiman City FC is provisionally suspended from the Ghana Football Association until the next GFA Congress, where the delegates will be presented with the matter on the agenda for Congress to take a decision on the issue in accordance with the Statutes of the Association.

  • New approach needed to attract Ghanaian players abroad to Black Stars Ibrahim Tanko to GFA

Former Ghana U-23 male team coach, Ibrahim Tanko, has advised the Ghana Football Association to change its approach in convincing foreign-based Ghanaian players to wear the national team jersey.

Tanko believes the GFA must start monitoring potential players whilst they fight to make it to the first-team in their respective.

“There are a lot of Ghanaian talents abroad especially in England, Germany, and Holland but we always wait for them to play first-team football before they get our attention. If we want to integrate them into our national team, we need to start early. A player like Tariq Lamptey has the potential of playing for the England national team because he plays in England,” he told Wontumi Sports.

The former Borussia Dortmund forward added that former Black Stars players residing outside the country could be tasked to monitor and convince potential players.

He also suggested that the Football Association sets up offices in countries where Ghanaian players are based.

“In Germany, we have Oto Addo, Eric Addo in Holland, Adu Tutu is also in Austria and Razak in Denmark. If we ask these former players to speak to the youngsters, they can convince them because they have experience in dealing with players. I know Turkish FA have an office in Germany because they know they are Turkish players who are based in Germany. So if we do the same, we will get these players.”

Agama as popularly known in the football circles said this will ensure the Ghana FA is transparent in its activities and also inform and seek ideas from relevant stakeholders on how to develop and market the game.

He explained that the stakeholders could comprise of three members each from the Ghana Football Association, Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Referees Association of Ghana (RAG) and the media.

  • Lets us save for the future – Kotoko CEO tells GFA

Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko SC, Nana Yaw Amponsah has advised the leadership of the Ghana Football Association not to spend the entire revenue the association has generated.

The Ghana Football Association held its 26th Ordinary Congress yesterday, September 1 at the Ghanaman Soccer of Excellence in Pampram.

Nana Yaw Amponsah, who contested in the 2019 Ghana Football Association’s Presidential elections but lost to Kurt Okraku made this appeal when addressing his fellow Congressmen and the leadership of the association.

“For me as an Association, we should be working towards saving for the future considering what the Coronavirus pandemic has done to us.

“The total budgeted expenditure is the same figure as the total budgeted revenue. We should not spend every pesewa that we bring in because it is not good for an association like ours.

“Of course you can exceed your revenue target or you can have less, same applies to your expenditure as the Vice President rightly said it is a flexible budget.”

He added that the Coronavirus pandemic has taught the world including the GFA the importance of saving, hence the need for the association to save about $10 million of the revenue they have generated so far.

“But I will admonish the leadership to try and at least save about 5 to 10 million this year on the proposed expenditure so that going forward we can build some good revenue and money in our accounts for future rather than thinking of spending everything that comes in, for me it is a word of advice.” Nana Yaw Amponsah concluded.

Meanwhile, the Court of Arbitration for Sports has ruled that the decision of the GFA Elections Committee to disqualify Wilfred Kweku Osei ‘Palmer’ from the 2019 GFA Election is valid.

  • Football will be back soon Sports Minister assures

Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Kwame Asiamah says government will soon lift the ban on both individual and team contact sports to pave the way for the resumption of football.

The Atwima Mponua Member of Parliament said this on Tuesday, September 01, 2020, during the 26th ordinary session of congress of the Ghana Football Association at the Ghanaman centre of Excellence at Prampram.

“Let me commend you for the various steps you have taken in developing Ghana football after the Normalisation process. Indeed, the innovative and inspiring BringBackTheLove campaign embarked on by the GFA showed clear signs that football was on ascendancy and fans were beginning to patronise domestic league matches again.

“Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic halted the momentum that the leagues were generating. It is our fervent hope that innovative steps would be put in place to ensure that when the game finally returns, which I know will be very soon, it will pick up from where it left off,” he said.

“With the positive results we are getting from the fight against the pandemic, Government is optimistic that soon it would be safe and appropriate to lift the restrictions on both individual and team contact sports activities in Ghana ” the lawmaker added.

Professional football in Ghana has been on a halt since mid-March 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic resulting in the cancellation of the 2019/2020 season.

  • Kurt Okraku to stay as GFA President as CAS dismisses Palmer’s case

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has ruled that the decision of the GFA Elections Committee to disqualify Wilfred Kweku Osei, affectionately called Osei Palmer from the 2019 GFA Election is valid.

The decision means Kurt Okraku will stay on as the FA President with no re-election ordered.

On Wednesday morning CAS, after several postponement delivered the verdict which is likely to bring finality to a long protracted legal process.

Palmer was contesting the legitimacy of the current leadership of the FA at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

He was found guilty of breaking GFA codes and was thus prevented from contesting the elections that saw the arrival of Kurt Okraku and eleven other Executive Council members.

The verdict means unless some monumental happens, Palmer may not be able to stand for any future election in the future.

Spokesperson of Osei Palmer, Ebo Appiah in an interview with Asempa FM admitted receiving the verdict from CAS. He said despite the disappointment they are ready to assist the current administration going forward.

“Palmer is calm and he is a sportsman who knows that you will either win or lose. He is calm and not down.” Ebo said.

  • What is the future of President Okraku if Palmer wins CAS case against the GFA

The future of Ghana Football Association boss, Kurt Okraku could be thrown wide opened if Wilfred Osei Kweku “Palmer” wins his landmark case against the association at the Court of Arbitration for Sport on September, 1.

If Palmer’s reliefs are granted by the world sport court on September 1, it will essentially collapse the 10-month presidency of the former Dreams FC Executive chairman.

Okraku coasted to a sweet victory in the presidential election back in October last year after a rigorous campaign.

But his young administration could be scuttled if Palmer becomes successful at the global tribunal.

The Ghana FA boss could face another bout of a laborious re-election bid if the association losses the case at CAS.

However, these are ifs and buts with the much-anticipated verdict expected to put to bed the long-winding battle that has rocked the GFA before Mr. Okraku assumed the top position.

Palmer dragged the defunct normalisation committee to CAS for an unfair and “calculated” disqualification from the presidential race.

The verdict has a far-reaching implication for both parties with CAS set to announce the ruling today September 1, after postponing it twice.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

These are frenetic times for the followers of both disqualified aspirant Wilfred Osei Kweku and current FA boss Kurt Okraku.

Palmer dragged the FA to the apex of world sports court after he was disqualified from contesting the 2019 Presidential race by the defunct normalisation committee.

CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA or allow the status quo to remain.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide-reaching implications if Palmer becomes successful.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

  • GFA’s outrageous, mind-boggling decision to use $290,000 for 92 computers, printers, scanners

On Tuesday August 25, 2020, the Ghana Football Association announced its decision to use $290,000 from its development money from FIFA to buy desktop computers, printers, scanners and also get internet connectivity for Premier League Clubs, Division One Clubs, Women’s Premier League Clubs and the RFA’s.

In this internet and digital age, it is a good step that the GFA intends to equip its members to enhance digital operations and the Loop fully supports.

However, the money which the leadership of the GFA has announced to the world, as having set aside to purchase these items is mind-boggling and outrageous to say the least.

$290,000 US Dollars, on an approximate exchange rate of 6 cedis to a dollar, amounts to a whopping GH 1,740,000, that is one million, seven hundred and forty Ghana Cedis. For those who still do your calculations in the old cedis, that is over 17 billion old cedis.

Yes, you read right! The GFA says it is setting aside this outrageous amount to buy just 92 desktop computers, 92 printers, 92 scanners, as well as internet connectivity for the list of beneficiaries stated above (16 premier clubs, 48 division clubs, 16 women’s premier league clubs and 10 RFAs, totalling 92).

    MARKET VALUE VRS GFA’s MIND-BOGGLING $290,000

A critical research into market values of the prices for desktop computers, printers, scanners and internet connectivity will reveal an outrageous disparity between what the GFA intends to spend and market value.

Indeep, the Loop was shocked to the marrow when it checked the prices of these items on the market.

    DESKTOP COMPUTER:

A good HP desktop computer on the market ranges from 2000 Cedis upwards. Let us assume the GFA will go for a high spec at GH 5000 per computer. Multiply that by 92 and you get 460,000 Cedis.

    PRINTERS:

Modern printers now come with scanners, so one will expect that the GFA will go for one that can serve dual purpose. But assuming the GFA wants to buy separately, good printers on the market for ranges from 300 cedis. But let’s say the GFA will even buy the printer at GH1,000 cedis. That will be a total of 92,000 Cedis.

    SCANNERS

As I said, good and modern printers come with scanners. But let’s assume the GFA will buy separate scanners. Good scanners are also very affordable on the market, and as I checked, they range from as low as 300 Cedis. But let’s say the GFA will buy it 1000 Cedis each. That will be another 92,000 Cedis.

    INTERNET CONNECTIVITY

I don’t know what sort of internet connectivity the GFA wants to get for the clubs and the RFA’s, but whatever it is, it certainly can’t exceed a certain reasonable figure. We all use Internet in our homes and offices and we have an idea of the cost of it, including fixed broadband.

    TOTAL COST OF EQUIPMENT

From the above, the total cost of all the equipment, in my high estimation (I went for high prices) is incredibly far lower than $290,000 US Dollars the GFA leadership wants to spend.

The cost of the 92 computers at 5000 Cedis each, 92 printers at 1000 Cwdis each and 92 scanners at 1000 Cedis each all amounts to GH 644,000 Cedis. That is a little over $100,000 US Dollars.
It should be noted that these items can still be procured at a lower fee if it is opened to a competitive purchasing process.

    QUESTIONS

    1. What informed the GFA leadership’s mind-boggling $290,000?

    2. Which company’s invoice are they using to arrive at such a gargantuan cost?

The Loop is really startled by this outrageous figure announced by the GFA for this exercise. It doesn’t make economic sense, to be honest.

Football stakeholders must reject this move by the GFA and demand transparency to ensure that their development money is used judiciously by the GFA.

The loop can only deduce from the actions of the GFA that the 92 selected beneficiaries,as professional entities can’t buy this items for their administrative purposes.

These are basic inputs any serious organization or club must have to be seen as a professional entity.

The loop wants to find out from the club licencing committee headed by Dr.Kwame B.Nuako, whether these items are not part of the basic requirements for clubs.

$290,000 for 92 desktop computers, 92 scanners, 92 printers and Internet connectivity is not only outrageous, but also ridiculous.

    Open your eyes football people.

    Long live Ghana Football.

  • Boycott Congress if GFA fails to present financial statement – Osei Palmer urges clubs

President of Tema Youth FC, Wilfred Kwaku Osei has urged clubs to boycott the upcoming Congress if the Ghana Football Association [GFA] fails to present its financial statement to all clubs.

With the 26th Congress scheduled for September 1, the country’s football governing wants new auditors to audit its accounts before it can furnish the clubs with its expenditure for the year according to reports.

But Wilfred Kwaku Osei has argued that the GFA should rely on it old auditors to audit its accounts and make them available to Congress.

He stressed that it’s mandatory for the GFA to furnish the various stakeholders of its expenditure before Congress can be held.

“Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer To the best of my knowledge, the auditors who audited the GFA’s previous account are still at post,” the former marketing committee member of the GFA told Asempa FM.

“Therefore, we cannot go to congress without the financial statement of the Association which is one of the mandatory items needed for the congress”, Osei Palmer added.

The Ghana Football Association has set Congress for September 1 at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram.

The stakeholders have been notified of the date which coincidentally clashes with the Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) ruling on the Ghana FA versus Wilfred Osei Kwaku ‘Palmer’.

Osei Palmer is battling the GFA at CAS over his disqualification from the last year’s GFA Presidential elections by the Normalization Committee.
