  • All you need to know about 2023 Ghana Football Association election

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is gearing up for its Extraordinary Congress, scheduled for October 5th at the Redaach Memorial Hotel in Tamale.

The Congress is slated to kick off at 9 a.m. and will primarily focus on endorsing Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku for a second term as the President of the GFA.

Kurt Okraku, the incumbent GFA President, is running uncontested after the Appeals Committee upheld the disqualification of his sole challenger, George Afriyie. Okraku initially secured the GFA Presidency in October 2019 when he triumphed over George Afriyie.

He took the reins from Kwesi Nyantakyi, whose prolonged tenure was marred by allegations of corruption, brought to light through an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The upcoming Congress is not limited to the presidential endorsement; it will also involve the election of executives who will oversee GFA affairs for the next four years.

In addition to the presidential position, delegates will select five representatives for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and three representatives for the Division One League (DOL) for the Executive Council.

The DOL candidates vying for the positions include Mark Addo, Samuel Addo Anim, Eugene Nobel Nii Amon Noel, Gideon Fosu, and Alexander Ababi.

For the GPL roles, ten candidates are in the running, including Kingsley Osei Bonsu, Nana Sarfo Oduro, Frederick Acheampong, Anthony Kwesi Aubynn, Ransford Anertey Abbey, Onyina Asenso, Edmund Kwabena Ackah, James Kwasi Appiah, Elloeny Amande, and Raphael Yawiah Gyambrah. Dr. Gifty Afia Oware-Mensah is running uncontested for the Women’s Football representative on the Executive Council.

The electoral process will span across ten regions, where regional delegates will elect their respective chairmen. Two chairmen will subsequently join the Executive Council.

Some regions have uncontested chairmanship races, including Greater Accra, Western, Eastern, and Northern regions. Samuel Aboabire, Simon Ehomah, Linford Boadu Asamoah, and Mahamadu Abu-Hassan are among the uncontested candidates.

In the Central region, Robert Otieku Duncan and Abdul Hayye Yartey are competing for the Central FA Chairman role, while the Brong Ahafo FA Chairman position is being contested by Dickson Kyere-Duah, Dr. Charles Osei Antoh, and Meshack Asante Ameyaw.

Salifu Shaibu Zida and Abel Alonort Asoogo are running for the Upper East Region FA Chairman role.

The event in Tamale is expected to host observers from FIFA, including Gelson Fernandes, Director of Member Associations for Africa; Silmara Sousa, FIFA Development Programme Coordinator; and Mr. Ahmed Harraz, FIFA Member Associations Africa representative.

The FIFA Delegation, as announced by the GFA, consists of three key members: Gelson Fernandes, who serves as the Director of FIFA Member Associations Africa; Silmara Sousa, holding the role of Development Program Coordinator for FIFA Member Associations Africa, and Ahmed Harraz, who assumes the position of Senior MA Governance Services Manager in FIFA MA Governance.

This FIFA Delegation has been actively assisting the GFA Elections Committee and will engage in final preparations and discussions with the committee during their stay in Ghana before the Congress.

Additionally, FIFA Executive Council Member Amaju Melvin Pinnick is expected to arrive in Ghana in the coming week to participate in the elective Congress, which will take place in the Northern Regional Capital, Tamale.

Furthermore, both CAF and WAFU B have expressed their intentions to send representatives to ensure the success of the GFA Congress on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

FIFA, the global governing body for football, is set to closely monitor the upcoming elective congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

To oversee this, FIFA has assembled a formidable delegation for the 2023 GFA Elective Congress.

The FIFA Delegation, as officially announced by the GFA, includes Gelson Fernandes, Director of FIFA Member Associations Africa; Silmara Sousa, Development Program Coordinator for FIFA Member Associations Africa; and Ahmed Harraz, Senior Manager of MA Governance Services at FIFA.

This FIFA Delegation, which has been providing support to the GFA Elections Committee, is anticipated to engage further with the GFA Elections Committee during their visit to Ghana before the Congress takes place.

In addition to the FIFA delegation, FIFA Executive Council Member Amaju Melvin Pinnick will also be arriving in Ghana in the coming week for the elective Congress to be held in the Northern Region on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in Tamale.

  • GFA Congress postponed as court adjourns case to October 12

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Congress, originally scheduled for October 5, 2023, has been postponed due to a court-ordered adjournment stemming from the dispute between King Faisal Football Club and the governing body of football in Ghana.

The new date for the court hearing is now set for Thursday, October 12, 2023.

Initially, the GFA had planned to hold its Congress in Tamale on September 27, 2023. However, King Faisal sought an injunction on the process, leading to the rescheduling of the assembly for early October.

King Faisal, a relegated team from the Ghana Premier League, seeks to maintain this restraint until elections for National League club representatives, Regional Football Associations, and related bodies are completed.

Furthermore, King Faisal contends that a valid Congress cannot proceed to elect the President until new representatives for the Executive Council (Exco) are duly elected.

The club also argues that initiating nominations for the GFA President’s election before Exco elections take place is both improper and illegal.

In addition, King Faisal, based in Kumasi, seeks a declaration that any resolutions passed by the current Exco regarding the GFA President’s election before Exco representatives are chosen constitute a breach of trust, confidence, and loyalty.

Following the disqualification of George Afriyie, Kurt Okraku is poised to continue his tenure as the FA President immediately after the Congress. However, the outcome of the elections hinges on the Court’s ruling in this matter.

It’s important to note that George Afriyie has filed a case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge his disqualification from participating in the GFA presidential elections scheduled for the near future.

  • George Afriyie’s attorney clarifies rationale behind their going to CAS in the GFA election dispute

George Afriyie’s attorney clarifies rationale behind their going to CAS in the GFA election dispute

George Afriyie is poised to become the second presidential aspirant, following Wilfred Osei Kwaku, to file a petition challenging the GFA’s Appeals Committee at CAS after being disqualified by the Elections Committee.

George Afriyie’s legal advisor, Esquire Richard Saaka, exudes confidence in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturning the Appeals Committee’s verdict that upheld his client’s disqualification.

In a previous report by mynewsgh.com, it was revealed that George Afriyie, the former GFA vice president, has chosen to contest the Appeals Committee’s decision to uphold his disqualification at CAS.

This decision was prompted by the Appeals Committee’s communication of its dismissal of his application.

In an interview with Citi FM, Saaka said, ”We are going to go to CAS… and that’s the instructions I have. We are exploring the situation where the court in Ghana will explore the breaches of the rules on natural justice as far as George Afriyie’s candidature to stand for the office of the GFA president is concerned.”

Additionally, Saaka disclosed that pursuing an injunction application in the High Court to halt the GFA’s elections remained a viable alternative.

”That is the first thing we need to note: that it is not only CAS that can deal with this matter. The second thing we need to note is that, in the case we put before the Appeals Committee, we put a case including the breaches of natural justice.”

”The decisions have been that, when it comes to allegations (sic) of breaches of rules on natural justice, these contractual rules on agreement between parties, such as the statutes of the GFA, would not override the decisions or the authorities of the court.”

Afriyie made this decision following the Appeals Committee’s rejection of his application, citing his failure to obtain the necessary signatures to endorse his candidature as the reason for dismissal.

In its decision, the Appeals Committee said the sixth person is an ”in-house lawyer of the Ghana Football Association. The lawyer was not part of the vetting team and did not ask George Kwasi Afriyie any questions. The lawyer provided administrative assistance to the committee.”

The Appeals Committee further asserted that, in response to Afriyie’s claim that the Committee breached the rule of ”Natural Justice and Fair Hearing” of his candidature when it ”failed, neglected, and refused to apply article 8(3) of the FA regulations on elections,” the Appeals Committee said ”it is not a case that a Police Clearance Certificate or passport picture had not been included, which would have warranted the application of article 8(3) of the Elections Regulations.”

George Afriyie will become the second presidential aspirant after Wilfred Osei Kwaku to petition to challenge the GFA’s Appeals Committee at CAS following disqualification by the Elections Committee. In Kwaku Osei’s case in 2019, CAS upheld the decision of the Committee.

Ex GFA presidential aspirant accesses Kurt Okraku’s performance

In a recent interview, Amanda Clinton, a former presidential aspirant of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), expressed her admiration for the work done by GFA President Kurt Okraku during his first term, characterizing it as a “fairly decent job.”

She commended Okraku for his efforts in reviving Ghana Football, particularly in light of the challenges it had encountered in the past.

While acknowledging Okraku’s performance, Clinton also raised concerns about his apparent reluctance to engage with challengers in the upcoming election.

Notably, George Afriyie, the sole challenger, had been disqualified, and his appeal was subsequently rejected. This has raised questions about the democratic process within the GFA.

“Optics-wise, it’s going to look really bad because he is the incumbent. He’s done a fairly decent job because of COVID. So to sit there as a de facto dictator-like figure when last four years we had, I think, six contenders, does not show anything of clearing the rot per se,” Clinton stated.

Expanding on her point, Amanda Clinton emphasised that, from an optics perspective, the current GFA President’s decision to avoid facing challengers in the upcoming election could be seen as the least favourable option.

This decision might suggest a sense of apprehension or unease, albeit for unspecified reasons.

It’s worth noting that Kurt Okraku, who secured victory in the 2019 elections, is approaching the end of his tenure, with the election slated for October 5th of the same year.

  • GFA moves its Elective Congress to October 5th

GFA moves its Elective Congress to October 5th

Ghana Football Association (GFA) has rescheduled its Elective Congress to take place on October 5, 2023.

This change comes after the original date of September 27 in Tamale had to be adjusted, possibly due to a court injunction initiated by King Faisal.

In accordance with Article 33 of the GFA Statutes 2019, the Executive Council of the Association has made the decision to move the Extraordinary Session of Congress to October 5, 2023.

The Congress is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be conducted at the Global Dream Hotel in Tamale.

The Official List of Candidates for the GFA Elections 2023 has already been released by the Elections Committee.

The agenda for the Congress, in accordance with Article 33 of the GFA Statutes, includes:

    – Opening Prayer – Roll Call – Declaration of Congress compliance with the Statutes – Approval of the Agenda – Handing over of Congress to GFA Elections Committee – Announcement of Election Procedure by GFA Elections Committee – Election of GFA President – Election of Executive Council Member (1 Women’s Premier League Representative) – Election of Executive Council Members (3 Division One League Representatives) – Election of Executive Council Members (5 Premier League Representatives) – Swearing in of the President and the Executive Council Members – Brief speech by the elected President – Closing Prayer

  • George Afriyie challenges disqualification in GFA elections

George Afriyie challenges disqualification in GFA elections

George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is poised to pursue his case as a final recourse by seeking resolution through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the National Independent Tribunal.

This decision follows the recent ruling by the Appeals Committee, which affirmed the GFA Elections Committee’s decision to disqualify George Afriyie from participating in the GFA Presidential elections.

In an exclusive interview with the media, George Afriyie’s legal representative, Esq. Richmond Saaka, disclosed that his client is fully committed to exploring all available avenues to address this matter.

“I have instructions from the client [George Afriyie], the instructions are based on the advice he has been given and the advice is informed by the very same GFA statutes and regulations.

“The statutes and regulations say that you can file an appeal if you are not happy with a certain decision and then you can head to the Court of Arbitration for Sports or the National Independent Arbitration Tribunal to deal with (an) appeal that arises.

“So we believe that, per the rules of the GFA, these are available options, we will head to the Court of Arbitration for Sports or engage the National Independent Arbitration Tribunal to help us appeal the decision of the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association because that is what the statutes of the FA provide.”

The original election date, initially scheduled for September 27, faces increased uncertainty due to a court injunction filed by King Faisal. Consequently, the hearing has been adjourned for the third time, with the new date set for September 28, 2023.

  • GFA thrashes George Afriyie’s disqualification appeal

GFA thrashes George Afriyie’s disqualification appeal

George Afriyie’s bid for the 2023 Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential elections has encountered a setback as his appeal against disqualification has been rejected.

Earlier this month, Afriyie was disqualified by the Elections Committee for not meeting the criteria outlined in Article 13(2)(j) of the Ghana Football Association statutes for 2019.

Additionally, he failed to secure the required support from fellow GFA members.

While Afriyie did file an appeal, the Appeals Committee has upheld the initial decision, effectively barring him from participating in the upcoming election.

In his appeal, dated September 8, 2023, George Kwasi Afriyie contested the Elections Committee’s decision to disqualify him as a candidate for the GFA presidency.

The Appeals Committee conducted a thorough review, examining all pertinent documents, including Afriyie’s submissions, the Elections Committee’s ruling, video footage of Afriyie’s vetting, and interviews conducted by the Elections Committee.

The primary question was whether George Kwasi Afriyie’s disqualification was justified.

Afriyie argued that the Elections Committee had six members instead of the required five.

However, the Appeals Committee clarified that the sixth individual mentioned by Afriyie was the GFA’s in-house lawyer, who played an administrative role and did not alter the panel’s composition.

Furthermore, Afriyie claimed to have submitted six GFA member endorsements for his nomination, but the Appeals Committee found that he had provided only five valid endorsements, as per the standard nomination form, which allowed for a maximum of five endorsements.

The Elections Committee’s decision to disqualify Afriyie hinged largely on an endorsement from Victory Club Warriors F/C, which was deemed invalid due to the signatory, Mr. Jeffery Asare, not being a director of the club or an authorised signatory officially registered with the GFA.

Despite Afriyie’s arguments, the Appeals Committee upheld the Elections Committee’s verdict.

Consequently, George Afriyie is no longer in contention for the GFA presidency in the forthcoming elections, leaving the incumbent President Kurt Okraku as the sole candidate.

Director of the GFA Foundation, Malcolm Frazier Appeadu, visited the ailing former goalkeeper of the Black Satellites and Black Meteors, William Essu, and presented a generous donation of GHS10,000.

The primary purpose of the visit was to assess Essu’s current health condition and convey heartfelt wishes for his speedy recovery.

During their meeting in Cape Coast, Essu shared the details of his illness, including the disappointment of missing out on being part of the Black Meteors AFCON squad.

He also spoke about the challenging period he has faced over the last five months.

Essu expressed profound gratitude to both the GFA and the GFA Foundation for their financial assistance and the caring support they have extended to him.

His brother, Alexander Essu, noted a noticeable improvement in William’s condition since he resumed treatment two days earlier.

The Director of the Foundation reassured them that the GFA is actively working with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure that the rightful bonuses for William Essu and the last Under 23 qualifying team are disbursed.

William Essu was a member of the National Under 23 Black Meteors team that successfully qualified for the CAF U23 AFCON.

Legon Cities support ailing goalkeeper after social media letter to club and GFA

Brother of ailing Legon Cities goalkeeper William Essu, Thomas Enu, has disclosed that the CEO of Legon Cities, Paa Kwesi Fabin has reached out to them and sent some money for the sick keeper’s health expenses.

This comes after the 21-year-old goalkeeper called on Coach Ibrahim Tanko, the entire Management of the Black Meteors, and the Ghana Football Association to come to his aid.

In an interview with Angel FM, Enu said the sickness began while Essu was with Ghana U-23 and has kept him on the sick bed for about five months.

Adding that “The CEO called this morning and told us to send him to 37 (the military hospital) in Accra,”

“When they called us, we told them that we tried several hospitals but he could not feel any better, so we are considering using other means.

“They asked how much we would need to fund it and we told them that we can’t quote an amount. Therefore, they should send what they are willing to offer or pay his three months salary so we will use it.”

The keeper’s brother continued that, and the club agreed to the family’s suggestion of seeking spiritual aid to better his brother’s health, hence sending an undisclosed amount to help fund the player’s health care.

“But for five months we’ve been going to the hospital and have not gotten any better outcomes, so we believe that his sickness is beyond the hospital.

“When it started, he texted them but they didn’t mind him. He also called them; they didn’t mind him. So if not for their goalkeeper (Silverster Sackey), who died, probably they wouldn’t have known that he was sick,” Enu said.

“They sent us some money, which will help,” he said.

Essu’s health condition became topical after his pictures as well as his letter to the Ghana Football Association seeking the release of bonuses due him to fund his health care went viral.

He said his brother failed to travel with the team to Morocco after feeling unfit at the airport.

“It started about five months ago. He felt sick at the airport while about to travel with the U-23 team to Morocco so he came home because of the condition.

“We sent him to the hospital and the number of drips he has had will surprise you. He has done lab tests and so many things. They checked him multiple times but couldn’t find anything.”

The images of Essu gained widespread attention as numerous local football fans voiced their dissatisfaction with his club, Legon Cities, for not giving enough consideration to the well-being of their players.

He revealed his need for another medical examination, but regrettably, he is unable to cover the expenses as he has already depleted his savings on medical treatment, with no positive outcome.

His unfortunate circumstances came to light online a day after Legon Cities officially announced the passing of their first-choice goalkeeper, Sylvester Sackey, due to a brief illness, in a statement released on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

Please release our bonus, I’m still ill – Sickly Black Meteors keeper begs GFA

Goalkeeper for both the Black Meteors and Legon Cities, William Essu, has appealed to the Ghana Football Association to release their U-23 AFCON winning bonuses from their victory over Algeria in March 2023.

This request comes as Essu’s deteriorating health condition, which was shared on the internet on September 12, 2023, has garnered sympathy and attention.

Reports suggest that Essu has been grappling with a serious illness for several months, and he feels neglected by his club, Legon Cities.

Consequently, he has decided to publicly call out the Football Association to address this outstanding debt.

In a Twitter post , the 21-year-old goalkeeper reached out to Coach Ibrahim Tanko, the entire Black Meteors management team, and the Ghana Football Association for assistance.

He has emphasised his urgent need for another health check-up but lamented that he lacks the financial means to cover the expenses, as he has already depleted his savings by seeking treatment without success.

Tragically, on the same day, September 12, 2023, Sylvester Sackey, another goalkeeper from Legon Cities, was confirmed to have passed away following a brief illness.

Criticism from GFA officials doesn’t affect me – Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, remains unperturbed by the criticism he has faced from some officials within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) since assuming the coaching role.

The Irish-Ghanaian coach has been under substantial scrutiny, with Executive Council members of the GFA, including Randy Abbey and George Amoako, publicly expressing their reservations. Ameenu Shardow, the team manager of the Black Stars, also joined the chorus of questions regarding the team’s performance under the former Norwich City manager.

Mark Addo, the vice president of the association, has also voiced his concerns regarding the 64-year-old coach, who has secured only one victory in his three games since taking the helm of the Black Stars.

Nevertheless, Hughton has indicated that he considers such criticisms as a normal part of the job and tends to pay them limited attention.

“This is normal. This is something that I’ve found since I’ve been here…whenever I’m going to games, people and supporters will come up to me and tell me what they think,” he told Asaase Radio.

“So, one thing I’m always conscious of is football is highs and lows and when you are on the back of what I regard as a poor result, and our last result against Madagascar was not the result that we wanted is that there’s always going to be a reaction.

“This is for me, this is normal, can’t expect for everything to be good and to be praised all the time. I’m never affected,” he added.

Scheduled for October 2023, the Black Stars are set to engage in a friendly encounter against Mexico. The match is confirmed to take place on Saturday, October 14.

Following weeks of anticipation, both football associations have finalised the arrangements, designating the Charlotte Bank of America Stadium as the host venue for the MexTour International friendly clash on October 14.

This match will bring together Mexico, the reigning champions of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, and Ghana, a prominent force in African football.

The fixture holds significance for Mexico, as it serves as part of their preparation leading up to the quarterfinal matches of the CONCACAF scheduled for November 2023.

Subsequently, the Black Stars will compete against the United States on October 17, merely three days later, in another friendly match. This match is set to take place at Geodis Park in Nashville.

These matches hold dual importance for the Black Stars, providing an opportunity to assess their readiness for the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast in 2024.

Furthermore, these friendly encounters will play a crucial role in preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, commencing in November 2023.

  • Chris Hughton details how he landed Black Stars job, rebuffs Gabby Otchere-Darko’s alleged influence

Chris Hughton details how he landed Black Stars job, rebuffs Gabby Otchere-Darko’s alleged influence

The prevailing narrative regarding the selection of Chris Hughton as the Black Stars coach revolves around claims that the decision was influenced by the government and imposed upon the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party and a relative of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been linked to orchestrating the appointment of Chris Hughton as the head coach of the Black Stars.

However, as Chris Hughton recounts the path that led to his appointment, he seems to absolve the government and, to some extent, Gabby Otchere-Darko from any direct influence.

During an interview on TalkSports, Hughton shared his experience of the discussions that ultimately led to him securing the coaching role, highlighting that the primary deliberations were conducted by the GFA.

“It actually started when I was on holiday in Ghana and we hadn’t done so well in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and the FA changed the coach and they wanted to bring in another coach…,” he said.

“Most people thought I was there for the job but that was not the case. It worked out because I was not working…I was asked if I will want to be a technical advisor for the two big games against Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup playoffs which we won.

“So the fact that we won, they asked me if I would want to continue this role going through to the World Cup because they saw me as an experienced coach and also have a Ghanaian background so I was asked if I could help. My role was to support the head coach and the technical team.

“Post-World Cup, I was asked if I would be the head coach and it didn’t take me a long time to accept,” he added.

His account of events seems to be in line with that of Gabby Otchere-Darko who also denied any involvement in the appointment of Chris Hughton as manager of the senior national team.

Chris Hughton was brought by the GFA not me. Chris and I have been good friends for a long time,” he told Kegyiwa Nankasa on his YouTube channel.

“He is a Tottenham fan and I am an Arsenal fan. The president is also a Tottenham fan. These things happen because God works in mysterious ways in putting strange people together.”

The legal practitioner added: “Chris is the choice of the Ghana Football Association and I think it’s a good decision.

“When there is a vacancy anywhere people lobby and at the time, people thought Hughton deserved the job. The GFA also needed someone who knew the team.”

Since his appointment in February this year, Chris Hughton has won one and drawn two of three games played so far.

A waste of our lives! AshGold coach, Thomas Duah fumes

    Ashantigold SC head coach
, Thomas Duah, expressed his frustration with the Ghana Football Association’s handling of the match-fixing scandal involving Inter Allies.

After being handed various sanctions following their involvement in the 7-0 match against Inter Allies in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League, which was ruled as a match of convenience by the GFA DC, Duah believes that the GFA wasted their lives for nothing with those sanctions.

Both Ashantigold SC and Inter Allies were expelled from the Ghana Premier League and demoted to the Division Two League, while some players faced bans of different durations.

However, the bans on the players were later overturned by CAS.

In response to the CAS verdict, Duah revealed that he had not seen the ruling document yet and, therefore, had not decided whether to appeal the decision or not.

“What the GFA and their Secretary have done to us is very painful. If I were Isaac Opoku Agyemang who was on the verge of moving to Europe prior to the verdict, I would have cursed the FA and the Secretary,” he told Akoma FM.

“I actually don’t know the FA Secretary personally. But he is the one who has been at the forefront of our issue. They have wasted our lives for nothing.

“I never received any verdict or document about the issue so I didn’t even know how to seek redress regarding the verdict on me.”

GFA pleased with CAS decision to uphold appeals of players involved in the match-fixing case

On Thursday, July 27, 2023, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) delivered a favorable ruling in the AshantiGold SC and Inter Allies FC match-fixing cases, upholding the appeals of the players involved.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its satisfaction with the CAS Arbitral Award, which overturned the GFA Appeals Committee’s decision issued on July 13, 2022.

The Arbitral Award granted the appeals of 22 listed players, including Alex Aso and Richard Lamptey, resulting in the nullification of the sanctions previously imposed on them by the GFA.

Consequently, these players were allowed to participate in the 2022–23 football season, thanks to a provisional measure (STAY) granted by CAS, which facilitated their registration for clubs of their choice.

To cover legal fees and related expenses incurred during the CAS proceedings, the GFA was ordered to contribute CHF300 each to the 21 players (1st Applicants) and CHF 3,000 to Richard Lamptey (2nd Applicant).

While the Arbitral Award dismissed all other claims filed by the players, the GFA fully complies with the decision regarding the 22 players.

CAS, recognized by FIFA and the GFA, serves as the global supreme authority for sports-related disputes.

The GFA encourages all members and participants in the sport to utilize the processes outlined in the Statutes and remains committed to adhering to all decisions.

With the CAS ruling in their favor, the 22 players can now fully engage in football activities with their respective clubs.

GFA Elections: Two football chiefs endorse Kurt Okraku

President of the GFA (Ghana Football Association), Kurt E.S. Okraku, has received a significant boost in his bid to continue in his role.

His ambition to stand for re-election during the 29th Ordinary Congress of the Association in Kumasi has been endorsed by two prominent football chiefs.

The Chairmen of the Western and Greater Accra regional Football Associations have publicly expressed their support for Okraku’s re-election.

Their endorsement comes as a valuable show of support for his candidacy.

During a radio interview following the conclusion of the Western Regional Division 2 Middle league, Simon Ehomah, the Western Regional FA boss, praised Okraku’s leadership and the positive impact he has had on Ghanaian football.

He credited a significant portion of the success achieved during his regime to the contribution and support of the current GFA President.

“All that I’m doing has been made possible because of Kurt (Okraku). So I will plead with all the premier and division one league clubs to rally behind him and support him,” Mr Ehomah told West Gold Radio in Takoradi.

He went further to throw his unflicnhing support to the GFA boss, a move that was supported by the Greater Accra RFA Chairman, Samuel Aboabire.

“I vehemently declare my backing for Kurt(Okraku),” Simon Ehomah said.

Mr Aboabire quipped,”If you are for Kurt I am for Game Changer”. Kurt Okraku is dubbed the ‘Game Changer’ a slogan championed while camoaignign for election in his first term.

Simon Ehomah cited the good works accomplished under the Kurt E.S Okraku administration despite being faced with the Covid-19 pandemic and other challenging situations.

He touted the GFA President’s down to earth but hardworking nature and believes these are leadership traits.

“He is really working hard.He is humble and offers a listening ear to almost every stakeholder. He is readily available whenever we call on him to suggest changes to help the game grow,” he concluded.

Randy Abbey denies accusations of GFA conspiring against Chris Hughton

Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, Dr. Randy Abbey, has dismissed claims suggesting that the GFA has any intention of dismissing Black Stars coach Chris Hughton.

The response came after Randy Abbey made public remarks about Hughton’s need to improve, as the team has managed only one win in three games since his appointment.

George Amoako, another GFA member, expressed his dissatisfaction with Hughton’s performance, stating that the team has not been impressive.

Meanwhile, team manager Ameenu Shardow acknowledged Hughton’s current role but mentioned that Ghana might have fared better under Otto Addo’s leadership.

However, Dr. Randy Abbey refuted any interpretation that the GFA is seeking Hughton’s removal, affirming that such claims are baseless.

He clarified that the GFA Executive Council has not discussed Hughton’s position as an agenda item.

“There is an unwarranted impression that there is a gang up against Chris Hughton,” he told Accra-based Original FM.

“I have only watched one of Chris Hughton’s games, but from what I gather from commentary, everyone, including himself, agrees we need to improve.”

“The Ghana Football Association Executive Council has not discussed Chris Hughton as an agenda,” Abbey added, refuting claims that the GFA has been planning to replace Hughton.

Chris Hughton took up the coaching role in February and has managed only one win and two goals scored in three games. Ghana’s match against the Central African Republic will determine the teams qualification for the AFCON in Ivory Coast next year.

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that Ghana incurred a total cost of $80,000 due to yellow card accumulations during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghanaian national team, known as the Black Stars, received eight yellow cards across three games in the tournament, ultimately falling short of advancing beyond the group stage. Although they secured a victory against South Korea, they faced defeats against Portugal and Uruguay.

During an interview, Asante Twum revealed that Ghana had to pay a fee of $10,000 for each caution received by their players during the tournament in Qatar.

“We paid $80,000 for yellow cards acquisition at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar,” he is quoted to have told Angel TV.

Alidu Seidu (twice), Kamaldeen Sulemana, Daniel Amartey, Tariq Lamptey, Inaki Williams, Andre Ayew and Mohammed Kudus all received yellow cards during the tournament last year.

Chris Hughton has not been that impressive – GFA Exco member

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association, George Amoako, expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of coach Chris Hughton since taking charge of the Black Stars.

Hughton was appointed as Ghana’s head coach in February 2023 and oversaw his first match, a victory against Angola by a lone goal.

However, subsequent matches resulted in draws against Angola and Madagascar. Assessing Hughton’s performance, Amoako stated in an interview with Angel FM that he was not impressed.

He further mentioned that Ghanaians should pray for the team to qualify for the upcoming AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“Have you seen Chris Hughton’s performance? He has played three matches. He hasn’t been impressive,” George Amoako stated.

He added, “If you look at the teams, Madagascar. I went to see the game against Angola and all the games I have seen we play under him. I am not really impressed. Let’s pray at least that we will qualify for the 2023 AFCON.”

George Amoako who is the former chairman of the Black Stars management committee was appointed after Kurt Okraku won the GFA Presidency in 2019.

  • Verdict of GFA vs Ashgold case to be delivered on August 21

Verdict of GFA vs Ashgold case to be delivered on August 21

The verdict in the match-fixing case between Ashantigold SC and the Ghana Football Association has been rescheduled by the Accra Human Rights Court to Monday, August 21, 2023.

Originally planned for Tuesday, July 18, the ruling was postponed by the Judge until next month.

Ashantigold SC is hopeful that the court will overturn their demotion and ensure a fair hearing from the country’s football governing body.

The case revolves around Ashantigold’s appeal against their relegation to Division Two in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season following their conviction for match manipulation by the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee.

During the 29th GFA Congress held on July 10 in Kumasi, it was decided that Ashantigold would remain suspended from participating in Ghana football.

This decision has further motivated the club to pursue justice through the legal system.

  • It’s a deception to think we can win AFCON, Black Stars is not ready – GFA Exco member

It’s a deception to think we can win AFCON, Black Stars is not ready – GFA Exco member

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA),Tony Aubynn believes that the Black Stars are not currently prepared to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana, a four-time champion of the tournament, last lifted the continental trophy in 1982 during the event held in Libya. Since then, they have reached the finals on three occasions but were unable to secure victory.

They suffered penalty shootout defeats to Ivory Coast in 1992 and 2015 and were defeated 1-0 by Egypt in 2010.

In recent years, Ghana’s performance in AFCON has declined.

Despite previously making six consecutive semi-final appearances, they experienced disappointment by being eliminated in the round of 16 in the 2019 edition.

Their most recent AFCON campaign saw their worst-ever performance as they failed to advance beyond the group stage.

Tony Aubynn believes it is about time the nation admitted the team’s weaknesses and built on a long-term project.

According to him, it will be a dishonest target to aim to win the tournament anytime soon.

“We have talented players in Europe and in our local league but I wonder if we have a team.

“What we need to do as a country is to lower our expectations as Ghanaians and then build from the base.

“If we still believe we are good enough to beat Brazil or win Afcon at this level of our team, then we will be deceiving ourselves,” he told Akoma FM.

“If we win it’s fine but we need to build just as Senegal, Morocco and the rest have done in recent years now.

  • Mere politics and empty talks -Ghanaian coach Jeff Ofori dismisses Kurt Okraku’s claims

Mere politics and empty talks -Ghanaian coach Jeff Ofori dismisses Kurt Okraku’s claims

Ghanaian youth coach based in Sweden, Jeff Ofori has played down the claims made by the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, regarding his commitment to the development of colts football in Ghana.

In response to Okraku’s speech at the 29th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association, Jeff Ofori dismissed the promises made by Okraku to make significant investments in colts football.

In an interview, Ofori revealed how Ghana Football missed out on a substantial investment opportunity from a Swedish company due to the deliberate actions of individuals within the association.

Ofori explained that he had been working for more than five years to secure funding from a company called SupercoachApp for grassroots football development.

He explained that the company and officials of the FA held a series of meetings but after a meeting with Kurt Okraku and other FA officials in February 2022, the FA’s countenance with respect to the deal changed completely.

“The FA are not interested in developing grassroots football. What Kurt Okraku said at the congress is mere politics and nothing else. I’m saying this because I have made efforts to secure funding from Swedish company to invest in our grassroots football.

He explained that Supercoach is a multinational football development organization that seeks to drive the progress of football through modern technology.

In his lamentations, coach Ofori said that had the FA opened it doors Supercoach, Ghanaian juvenile clubs and coaches would have been exposed to technological facilities and innovations that would have aided in their work and ensure development of grassroots football.

“It took me five years to work on this deal and after the people finally agreed to come to Ghana, the FA people collapsed the deal.

They came here and we held meetings with the technical director and Kurt Okraku as well but the FA have been playing hardball since.

“I have lost the trust of the company because they feel I let them. They were really interested in helping develop grassroots football. They had budget of over $50,000 that they wanted to pump into our football but Kurt and his people were not interested.”

Coach Ofori believes that the turning point that triggered the collapse of the deal was when the Swedish firm disclosed that the amount involved was not going to be handed to the FA but rather, the company will work with the FA to ensure that the monies are spent judiciously and accounted for.

“They started dragging their feet when they realize that the money was not going to come to them directly. The company wanted to be deeply involved in the execution of the partnership so the FA people decided to pull back”, he said.

His comments come on the back of Kurt Okraku’s promise to support all 48 division one league clubs with GH₵80,000.

Speaking at the 29th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association, held at KNUST Great Hall in Kumasi on Monday, July 10, Kurt Okraku opines that, amid the many challenges confronting Ghana football, the association is doing its bid to ignite passion and create wealth for all.

According to Kurt Okraku, “Division One clubs will each now receive GHC 80,000 next season as incentives”, he said.

Randy Abbey defends GFA against blame for Kotoko and Hearts of Oak’s struggles

Member of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Committee, Dr. Randy Abbey, has reacted to those who accuse the GFA of being responsible for the collapse of once-dominant local football teams Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.

Both clubs have had severe declines in their domestic achievements in recent years as a result of their struggles in Africa’s main interclub competitions. Last season, neither team won a title.

Abbey vehemently rejected the idea that the GFA was to blame for the two legendary teams’ sad status. He emphasised that the GFA has no influence over Kotoko’s and Hearts’ daily activities, including the selection of their boards of directors or CEOs.

Responding to questions from sports journalists, Abbey defended the GFA’s position, saying, “Sometimes people ask questions, and we must help them understand. Does the GFA run Kotoko and Hearts? Is the GFA responsible for appointing the Board of directors for the clubs or CEOs for the clubs?

“Is the GFA responsible for the Circles and the Chapters? So what are we talking about? If the clubs are not doing well, what has that got to do with the GFA? I’m asking you, you live here.”

Fans and analysts are concerned about the struggles of these two successful clubs, believing that they are contributing to the country’s overall decline in football.

Former vice president of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, claims that Kurt Okraku, the FA’s president, did not provide funding for the distribution of football boots to all Division One and Premier League Clubs.

Kurt Okraku promised all Division One League clubs would receive 30 football boots annually at the start of the 2022–23 betPawa Premier League, and he more than kept his word in the recently concluded 2022–23 campaign.

A total number of  One Thousand Four Hundred and Forty (1,440) pair of boots was supplied to the 48 Division One League clubs and Five Hundred and forty (540) pair of boots were delivered to the Premier League clubs, taking the number of boots to be shared to One Thousand nine hundred and eighty (1,980).

According to the astute football administrator, “Kurt Okraku never funded the distribution of football boots to Premier and Division One League clubs”, he told Angel TV.

Under this program, clubs will receive a financial package of GH₵50,000 to encourage the promotion and development of young players within their club structures.

During the 29th GFA Ordinary Congress held at the KNUST Great Hall on July 10, Okraku announced that clubs will be eligible for an extra GH₵25,000 if two of their youth team players participate in more than 15 games.

Ashanti Gold SC emerged victorious in that match with a 7-0 scoreline.

Despite attempts to return to the top-tier division and seeking resolution through legal means, the club’s efforts have been unsuccessful.

The announcement of Ashanti Gold SC’s expulsion from the Ghana Football Association was made during the GFA’s 29th Ordinary Congress on July 10, 2023, held at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

During the congress, the issue of Ashanti Gold SC’s absence and exclusion from the Premier League was raised by FA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo.

The motion was supported by Black Stars team manager Mohammed Ameenu Shardow, while Alhaji Grusah, the bankroller of King Faisal FC, requested a vote for Ashanti Gold’s reinstatement.

In the vote, 64 members opposed Ashanti Gold SC’s return for the 2023-24 league season, while 17 members voted in favor of their inclusion.

Kurt Okraku issues warning amid informant petition to FIFA

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has issued a cautionary response to Akwasi Ossei Nkrumah, a sports enthusiast who submitted a petition to FIFA.

A document circulating on social media contained allegations from the petitioner, accusing Okraku of potential and actual violations of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

The petitioner called for an immediate investigation into the conduct of the FA boss.

Kurt at the 29th Ordinary Congress held at the KNUST Great Hall in Kumasi on Monday, July 1, in his speech, issued a strong warning saying “By virtue of where I sit, I hold files that can defame and malign people in the Ghana football ecosystem. But I would not do that!”

The petitioner in his document called out Kurt Okraku for forgery, falsification, and nepotism in GFA appointments, abuse of position, manipulation of matches or competitions, and duty of loyalty as the basis for the FIFA investigation.

That notwithstanding, Okraku in many of his speeches said he would not engage in defamatory actions but did not tackle the alleged acts labeled against him.

It is uncertain when FIFA will respond to the allegations against the FA President but the ‘Game Changer’ remains focused on delivering on his mandate of ‘Creating Wealth for All’ as he seeks another term in office when the GFA Election comes on in October 2023.

has made a significant announcement regarding the support provided to referees in regional matches.

Speaking at the GFA’s Congress in Kumasi, Okraku expressed the association’s commitment to easing the financial burden on clubs by facilitating the payment of referee fees.

Okraku revealed that a sum of GHS300,000 will be invested in supporting the payment of referees in regional matches.

This initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain on clubs and ensure fair compensation for the referees’ services.

By taking this step, the GFA demonstrates its dedication to enhancing the integrity and smooth operation of regional matches by providing the necessary financial support to referees.

“We will invest GHS300,000 to help in the payment of referee fees in regions. Clubs don’t have to take the burden alone,” Okraku stated.

The Congress, held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), saw Okraku address various issues and make promises that were well received by stakeholders in attendance.

However, Okraku also emphasised the importance of protecting Ghanaian football and highlighted the efforts made by him and the Executive Council to restore its reputation and revitalize the national football brand.

“I’m not interested in destroying the brand, Ghana football. If indeed you love Ghana football, you should be interested in building the brand and not being destroyed.

“When we took over, this brand was badly damaged,” Okraku asserted.

He further underlined his commitment to strengthening the sport’s foundation and ensuring its long-term growth and success.

The Congress provided an opportunity for stakeholders to unite in their efforts to support and develop Ghana football, with Okraku’s announcement regarding referee payments reflecting the association’s dedication to fair play and the sustainable development of the sport.

GFA 2023 elections slated for October

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced that its long-awaited Election Congress will be held before the end of October 2023.

Addressing concerns regarding a potential extension of the current Executive Council’s mandate, GFA President Kurt Okraku and his team have taken decisive measures.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 6, 2023, GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo assured the public that the Election Committee has already commenced discussions with various clubs to establish a clear roadmap for the upcoming elections.

The GFA expressed its commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent process that aligns with its statutes and regulations.

As stated in the General Secretary’s statement, the Election Committee highlighted the importance of determining the nomination fee, which will be approved during the forthcoming Ordinary Congress scheduled for July 10 at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

Once the nomination fee has been finalized, the GFA will proceed to accept nominations for the highly-anticipated elections.

  • 2023 GFA Elections: Consent to new nomination fee for roadmap – GFA

2023 GFA Elections: Consent to new nomination fee for roadmap – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has urged its members to support the proposed new nomination fees for the upcoming Presidential and Executive Council elections.

This call comes in response to concerns raised by New Edubiase United, a Division One League Club, about the current leadership allegedly pressuring members to sign documents to extend the election timeline beyond their mandate.

The GFA has reassured members that there is no coercion involved and that the aim of the new nomination fees is to facilitate the smooth organization of the elections.

“…the Executive Council of the GFA proposed in item 12 of the agenda an “Approval of GFA Election Nominations Fees”. On what basis are we going to discuss this matter, when members do not even know when the GFA elections would be held?

“We have also been made aware of the GFA’s deliberate attitude of:

    a. coercing some members of the GFA to secretly sign documents in order to postpone the GFA Elections, which is arguably supposed to take place this year to a later date;

    b. coercing some members of the GFA to secretly sign documents giving authority to the GFA Executive Council to amend Articles 31 and 32 and in particular Article 32 (2) (q) of the GFA Statutes 2019.”

But, the FA through its General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, said the claims and fears are from the truth.

“Your fear that the GFA Election would be held beyond the mandate of the current Executive Council is not supported by the facts,” a portion of the letter said.

“You presented your club at the recent engagement by the Executive Council with Division One clubs (same engagements were held with GPL, WPL clubs, etc).

“At the meetings, members(clubs) were informed categorically that an Elective Congress will be held before the end of the mandate of the current Executive Council.

“You were also informed that the Election Committee had held meetings and was working on the Roadmap and would ensure that the elections take place as required by the GFA Statutes,” it stated.

The letter, however, drew New Edubiase’s attention to the fact that there’s a proposal before Congress seeking approval of new nomination fees for the elections.

The proposal, submitted on June 24, 2023, suggested that the nomination fee of the President be increased from GHC 5,000 to GHC 50,000 while that of the Executive Council will be increased from GHC 2,500 to GHC 15,000.

“…the Election Committee will need the approved Nomination Fee from the Congress of the 10th of July 2023 before Nominations are opened by including the fees in the Election Roadmap and Guidelines,” the letter stated.

The GFA will assemble in Kumasi for its 29th Ordinary session of Congress. The approval of the new nomination fees will pave the way for the roadmap for the elections to be organised later this year.

Management Committee member of Ghana’s U23 side Fredrick Acheampong, has confirmed that the technical team of the Black Meteors has been dissolved in the wake of their failure to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Black Meteors of Ghana were eliminated at the U23 African Cup of Nations, which serves as a qualification tournament for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The team was unable to progress past the group stages and secure one of the three available slots.

Following their exit from the U23 AFCON, Acheampong announced that the Black Meteors team has been disbanded.

The decision regarding the recall of the technical teams will ultimately rest with the GFA Executive Committee.

“This team was formed for the purpose of the Olympic Games. It will be the decision of the Executive Council for the coach to continue. I am not in the position to say that he will continue or not.

“The team has been dissolved because this was for the Olympic Games and we didn’t qualify,” Fredrick Acheampong told 3FM.

Ghana has not qualified for the Olympic Games football tournament since 2004.

  • Current GFA is killing Ghana football – Ex-Black Stars player Agyemang Badu

Current GFA is killing Ghana football – Ex-Black Stars player Agyemang Badu

Former midfielder for the Black Stars, Emmanuel Agyemang, has expressed his concerns about the current state of Ghanaian football, particularly in light of the Ghana U23 team’s early exit from the AFCON U-23 tournament in Morocco.

Unfortunately, their elimination at the group stage means that they will not qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

This marks the third occasion in a little over a year that a Ghanaian national team has been unable to advance past the initial round of an international competition.

Agyemang’s lamentations highlight the disappointing performances and challenges faced by Ghanaian football on the international stage.

“When I talk, I don’t get anything from it, but I’m talking because the sport that gave me something is about to die and I can’t just look on,” he told Joy Sports.

“The GFA needs to organize an emergency meeting tomorrow and take stock of what’s happening. Where our football is heading is dangerous.

“Ghana football is in dangerous times. If care isn’t taken, in a couple of years, qualification to major competitions may become problematic.”

The Black Meteors arrived in Ghana on Monday morning after an abysmal showing in Morocco, as reported by Ghanafa.org.

    Derek Boateng blasts GFA

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Ghana midfielder, Derek Boateng has accused the Ghana Football Association of influencing player selection in the various national teams.

His comment comes after the Black Meteors’ disastrous showing at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, where Ghana were eliminated from the group stage.

  • Interfering in the work of coaches is wrong – Nyantakyi

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwasi Nyantakyi, has voiced his opposition to the practice of imposing players on national team coaches.

Speaking to the media, the former FIFA council member emphasized the importance of respecting the professional judgment of coaches.

“It is very important for us to know that coaches are professionals just like any other professional you may engage to work for you, a surveyor, an architect, a teacher, an engineer or even a doctor,” he said in an interview with GTV.

“And when you employ any of them you do not tell the person how to do the work because once the person is certificated to do the work, it is presumed that he has deep knowledge and experience in the work and can perform satisfactorily to achieve the set objectives.

He added that “it is unprofessional for anyone to tell a coach to recruit a player and field him in a game, however, there is nothing wrong for anybody to suggest that a certain player is good and that the coach should look at him but it is wrong for a management committee to allocate to themselves players per member in the team.

“The final decision should always rest with the coach and anything that compromises his independence and decision-making is interference and must be resisted,” started.

GFA is just clueless – Derek Boateng reacts after Meteors AFCON exit

Former Ghana international, Derek Boateng has descended on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for their poor handling of the sport in the country.

His comments come following Black Meteors’ early elimination at the ongoing U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Ghana played out a 1-1 stalemate against Guinea on Friday night, a result which meant they finished third in Group A with four points, exiting the competition on the goal difference rule.

Ibrahim Tanko and his charges opened their campaign a win hard-fought win against Congo before a humiliating defeat against Morocco.

They add to the recent failures of the various national teams under the guidance of the Kurt Okraku-led GFA administration.

“It’s about time we start being fair and tough in our decision. We haven’t done enough to be at the Olympic Games,” the former Black Stars midfielder told Joy FM.

“The GFA think they have answers to everything. Our youth football is collapsing and it’s about time we stop thinking about Black Stars.”

The Right to Dream Academy scout also revealed the GFA members influence selection at various national team levels because they own players.

“The FA owns a lot of players in the national teams and that’s why we don’t perform,” he continued.

“When CK [Akonnor] was there, the FA were telling him the kind of players he should call and when things didn’t go well they kicked him out.

“For me, I think the GFA don’t know what they are doing. I don’t think the GFA school will help Ghana football.”

Boateng played through the ranks at the national team before advancing to feature for the senior team on several occasions.

Increase Ghana Premier League prize money – Fred Pappoe urges

Former vice-president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA),Fred Pappoe, is advocating for a significant increase in the prize money for the Ghana Premier League.

Pappoe emphasizes the importance of providing greater incentives for clubs and players involved in the league.

In his passionate appeal to the football authorities, Pappoe points out that the current financial rewards are overdue for an upgrade.

He highlights that the prize money was determined before the league commenced, and at that time, there were no objections.

However, Pappoe asserts the need to raise the prize money for future competitions.

He acknowledges that the feasibility of increasing the prize money relies on securing sponsorships and reaching agreements on how the sponsorship funds should be distributed among the clubs.

“As you can see, we all became wiser after the event. I think the figure was fixed before the league started so at the time, we were not complaining but now looking back going forward for further competitions if we can improve it,” Pappoe told Peace Fm.

He believes that the clubs should be involved in determining how the funds are shared and should collectively strive to improve their situation.

“But you know it all depends on sponsorship and the way we agree to share the sponsorship money.

And that one is the clubs the clubs are part of how we will do it we will use this for that and that,”

He concludes by stating that if the clubs feel that the current prize money is inadequate, they can always revisit the issue when the opportunity arises, and work together to secure better rewards for themselves.

“The clubs are fully in the know so if we feel it is not good, we can always go back once the opportunity comes then we do better to ourselves”.

GFA likely to appoint Didi Dramani as Black Galaxies head coach – Reports

Reports indicate that Mas’Ud Didi Dramani, the assistant manager of the Black Stars, is set to be appointed as the new head coach of the Black Galaxies.

An official announcement from the Ghana Football Association is expected to be made shortly, following Annor Walker’s resignation from the position.

The Ghana Football Association has reportedly offered Didi Dramani a two-year contract to lead the Black Galaxies (Local Black Stars).

Didi Dramani boasts an impressive coaching track record, previously serving as the head coach of the Ghana National Under 17 team.

Under his leadership, the team achieved qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan and secured a commendable bronze medal.

Additionally, Didi Dramani worked as an assistant coach alongside Otto Addo during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, despite Ghana’s disappointing performance, finishing last in the group stages.

  • Reject exorbitant filing fee for GFA presidential race – Ntow Fianko to Congress

Reject exorbitant filing fee for GFA presidential race – Ntow Fianko to Congress

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sparked a contentious debate within the football community by suggesting a significant increase in the filing fee for the GFA presidential position.

The proposed fee would rise from GHC 5,000 to GHC 50,000, and its implications will be extensively discussed at the upcoming Congress meeting scheduled for July 10, 2023.

Ntow Fianko, a former Chairman of the Division One League Board, has emerged as a prominent critic of the fee hike.

Fianko strongly opposes the proposed increase, arguing that it is excessively high and will discourage well-meaning individuals from participating in the presidential race.

He believes that such a hefty fee will hinder Ghana’s progress in football administration by limiting the pool of potential candidates.

“How do people who have the interest of Ghana at heart afford such a fee? This is unreasonable and should be thrown out at the Congress meeting,” he said in an interview with Happy FM.

“Setting up this proposal looks like a scheme being set up to deter others from contesting the incumbent, Kurt Okraku.

“From GHC5000 to GHC50,000? And their excuse is to cover the cost of elections? This is not the first we are having such elections. Such an excuse is flimsy.”

As the July 10 Congress meeting approaches, the GFA hopes to secure approval for these proposed changes.

Asamoah Gyan to be celebrated by GFA in grand style

General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has disclosed that preparations are underway to pay tribute to former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan in light of his retirement announcement on Tuesday.

Gyan, who made significant contributions to Ghana’s national team, has established himself as one of the country’s most esteemed footballers, featuring prominently in numerous tournaments and securing the position as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.

Furthermore, Gyan’s remarkable performance in three World Cup tournaments, amassing six goals, has earned him the distinction of being Africa’s top scorer in this prestigious competition.

Due to his exceptional feats, achieved in football, the announcement of his retirement attracted many tributes from federations, teammates, and former footballers as well as football fans among others.

On the part of the GFA, they will go beyond just paying verbal tribute but meet Gyan, plan, and come out with a massive celebration to honour the 37-year-old.

“He is a true legend. We have congratulated him and he deserves all the accolades for what he has done for all of us in terms of the development of the game and the wonderful memories he has given us over the years,” he told Asempa FM

“However, in terms of what we have to do to celebrate him, we would have to take our time and plan together with him so that it can be done in grand style. So we will engage him and come out.

  • It was too late when GFA approached me – Alphonso Davies

It was too late when GFA approached me – Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies, the Bayern Munich defender, has revealed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) approached him to represent Ghana, but the contact occurred too late for him to consider the offer.

Although born in Ghana to Liberian parents, Davies had the option to play for either Ghana or Liberia. However, after obtaining Canadian citizenship in June 2017, he chose to play for Canada.

Davies expressed that despite his involvement in football for some time, he was never considered by Ghana because he wasn’t a prominent figure in the sport. It was only after his notable transfer move that Ghana made an attempt to approach him.

He stated that there was indeed an Instagram contact from the Ghana FA at some point, but the timing of the approach was too late for him to reconsider his decision to represent Canada.

“Ghana never reached out and also my mum was like, no [to the idea of me playing for Ghana],” he said when quizzed whether was an option to play for the country of his birth.

“I was playing like not even like the academy they never like said [anything about wanting me] I wasn’t a big name. When the news came out that I was going to Bayern, then I got a message from the Ghana federation.

“I think it was someone on the federation he texted me on Instagram because he didn’t have my number or email. But it was too late, at that time I had already got my citizenship and already made it to [represent] Canada.”

Davies made his first debut for the Canadian national team in June 2017 becoming the youngest player to play for the senior team.

The 22-year-old has 13 goals in 39 appearances for Canada since making his debut.

The ‘Ghana Week in DC’ will be an annual event in Washington DC which would consist of activities to showcase Ghana’s tourism ecosystem, arts, culture, trade, investment opportunities and football.

“It also aims to create awareness for and about Ghanaian arts, and music, among others while promoting Ghanaian tourism and culture with the main highlight of the week being a football match between one of Ghana’s Premier League teams and DC United.”

The celebration is also in partnership with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Ghana Football Association (GFA), Embassy of Ghana – Washington DC, City of DC, Mayor Office and PKB Enterprises.

The Chief Executive Officer of GTA, in his welcome statement, touted Ghana’s achievement in the global community and music industry over the decades.

He said ‘Beyond the Return’ was about the partnership, adding that the Ghana Week in DC was one of the partnerships to put Ghana out there and within the diaspora.

According to him, “the Authority is excited with the outcomes of its partnership outreach culminating in the organising of this celebration”, and said it would help cement the gains of the Return.”

Jamil Maraby, Director of Marketing, GFA stated that football had a pulling power, saying that the sport would bring more attention to Ghana Week, hence the need for his outfit to partner in the celebration.

“We have the Ghana Week and it only entails forums on arts and culture, but with this one, we intend to bring much more attention to it, and the football aspect would help do that and make it successful.”

Mr Maraby appealed to the organisers to make sure the event comes to stay as a yearly event that people across the world would look up to.

The Head of Public Relations and Communications Division, GIPC, Mr Chares Opoku Mensah said the project would showcase Ghana “not leaving anything out. From business, culture and arts, entertainment, football, but we are using soccer to lead the charge to open the door.”

He emphasised that for GIPC it aligned with their mandate of promoting Ghana as a place to do business, saying “Our role in this project will push that agenda within the whole scoop.”

He entreated all partners to come on board to support this year’s “Ghana Week in DC”, adding that it was a good course.

Mr Paxton Baker, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), PKB Enterprises, added that the idea behind using football as a key was also to help establish the city of Washington DC as the anchor to showcase talents coming out of Africa.

Stephen Appiah’s outburst calls a GFA, ex-players meeting

On Tuesday, April 25, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Professional Football Association of Ghana (PFAG) met in Accra.

This is thought to have been required as a result of remarks made a few weeks earlier by Stephen Appiah, a former captain of Ghana, in which he questioned the purported exclusion of former players from football administration.

The major objective of the meeting was to deliberate and go over problems that are crucial to the growth of football in Ghana.

The meeting focused on player welfare, the standard player contract, funding and support for domestic football and national teams, and the role of former players in the development of Ghana football.

GFA President Edwin Simeon-Okraku urged the PFAG to provide recommendations and proposals on the current GFA statutes. The statutes are under review for possible amendments to make them more effective.

During the meeting, the importance of footballers, both ex-active and active in the football ecosystem, was emphasized, particularly opportunities in coaching and other identified pathways.

“We have a lot to do as stakeholders to push this industry to greater heights. I know the power and influence that you all carry as individuals and as a unit hence this meeting,” said GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku.

The meeting was attended by top officials of the GFA including GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, Vice President Mark Addo, Executive Council Members Dr. Tony Aubynn, Nana Sarfo Oduro, and Samuel Anim Addo, among others.

The PFAG delegation, on the other hand, was led by President Samuel Osei Kuffuor and included Vice President Joseph Tetteh Zutah, General Secretary Anthony Baffoe, and Deputy General Secretary Solomon Torson.

Several football legends like Asamoah Gyan, John Mensah, and John Painstil were also present.
