During the 117-hour event, she plans to exclusively sing Ghanaian songs, spanning genres like gospel, highlife, and hiplife.

Afua drew inspiration from Hilda Baci’s cook-a-thon, where a four-year-old cooking record set by Lata Tondon was successfully broken.

The Guinness World Record craze that swept through Nigeria months ago has now landed in Ghana, with Afua Asantewaa Aduonum gearing up to attempt a singathon record.

Afua, a broadcast journalist and Women Empowerment Advocate, has received approval from the global record company to make an endeavor to break the record for the longest singathon by an individual.

Her goal is to establish a new record, aiming for a minimum of 117 hours and a maximum of 120 hours. The current record is held by Sunil Waghmare from India, who sang for an impressive 105 hours from March 3rd to 7th, 2012.

Nigeria made headlines recently when Hilda Baci broke a cookathon record, but she has since been surpassed by an Irish chef. However, Nigeria reclaimed a spot in the record books when Helen Williams crafted a wig that stretched a remarkable 351.28m (1,152ft 5in).

Williams dedicated 11 days and two million naira (£2,000: $2,500) to create the hairpiece, utilizing 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hair spray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and 6,250 hair clips.

  • Nigerians in a”record-a-thon” craze for Guinness World Record

Nigerians in a”record-a-thon” craze for Guinness World Record

As you delve into this article, it’s highly likely that yet another Nigerian is embarking on a quest to establish a new Guinness World Record, adding to the ongoing frenzy that has captivated Africa’s most populous nation.

Keeping track of the multitude of recent attempts is a challenge in itself. From a remarkable 200-hour singing marathon to a continuous crying endeavor currently underway, and from a determined woman’s quest to set the longest indoor stay record to a captivating attempt at frying the most snails among several culinary-themed endeavors, the “record-a-thon” craze showcases the diversity of Nigerian aspirations and their eagerness to leave an indelible mark in the world of records.

You can pinpoint the exact moment when some of the country’s 200 million people seemingly decided that every world record must fall – a medium-sized crowd braved rain and darkness for four days in May at a swanky venue in Lagos to watch Hilda Baci, a tired-looking chef, cook her way into the record books.

She cooked for a total of 100 hours, and although it was officially logged at 93 hours 11 minutes by the Guinness World Record (GWR), it was still enough to set a new record.

Since then, no day has passed without the now familiar sight of a digital clock on a dark screen signalling that someone, or a couple, is attempting a new world record.

Even GWR is struggling to keep up, after basking in the initial swell of attention as Nigerians keenly followed Ms Baci’s feat.

“Please enough of the record-a-thons,” the organisation humorously tweeted on Tuesday after someone broached the idea of not one, but two separate attempts – an “idea-a-thon” and a “puff-puff-a-thon”.

A woman holding up a Guinness World Record plaque
Hilda Baci sparked the craze by setting a cooking record in May

This followed a previous GWR tweet saying that people should first apply before attempting to set a record. The “polite reminder” was seen as a cheeky dig at Nigerians after a masseuse collapsed while aiming to set a new record for the longest time spent massaging non-stop.

That attempt was now abandoned, she said, adding that her 50 hours was enough for the record, even though she didn’t apply to Guinness.

It is the same bravado that has marked the recent wave, with people boldly announcing their attempts without applying to GWR and not sticking to the rules.

Two chefs turned off their stoves and went to sleep during their attempts, which disqualified them.

“To avoid disappointment, it is important to ensure that what you want to attempt is a valid record title and that you understand the guidelines,” a GWR representative told the BBC.

They said the organisation had seen a spike in applications from Nigerians but could not confirm if the number of attempts from one country itself constituted a record.

    A woman frying
Farominiyi Kemi will need a bigger fryer for her record puff-puff attempt

“Nigerians are funny people and we tend to ride on the wave of whatever is happening at the moment. In less than three months the craze would die down,” said Farominiyi Kemi, the double-attempter who broke the patience of Guinness.

The idea of two attempts was a joke, she told the BBC, but frying a record number of puff-puff – a soft round deep-fried dough like a donut – has now taken firm root in her mind.

One man who is definitely taking his attempt seriously is secondary school teacher John Obot, who is going for the longest time reading aloud in September.

He has obtained approval from GWR and is rehearsing towards crushing the current record of 124 hours set last year in Turkey by Rysbai Isakov of Kyrgyzstan.

Mr Obot aims to read aloud non-stop for 140 hours in the peaceful coastal city of Uyo in southern Nigeria.

“The motivation is to promote reading culture in Nigeria,” he said, leaving no doubt about his capability during a short call in which it was hard to get a word in edgeways.

“I decided to choose a record that is meaningful,” he added, taking a swipe at other attempts, including one for the most coconuts dehusked only using teeth.

“Of what value is that record, or the people that want to kiss?” asked Mr Obot, who proclaimed his attempt superior just for the Nigerian and English classics he would be reading on the day.

    Man crying
Tembu Ebere says he is crying for African youths to show them there is no limit

That kissing attempt has – disappointingly for some – been banned in Ekiti state where it was planned, with authorities warning all involved that there would be consequences if they went ahead with their attempt to set a record for kissing non-stop. GWR removed this category after people collapsed during previous attempts (outside Nigeria).

“[The] ‘kiss-a-thon’ as an event is not only absurd, immoral, unhealthy [but] capable of denigrating the image of Ekiti,” a statement from the culture ministry said.

Ekiti is closely associated with the recent craze as it was there that chef Dammy, while the steam was still rising in chef Baci’s kitchen and Guinness was yet to ratify her record, turned on her stove to try and outdo her fellow countrywoman.

The physical strain of some of the attempts, as seen with the masseuse, is also a slight cause for worry.

Tembu Ebere, who is crying non-stop for seven days, says he’s experienced serious health issues, telling the BBC he has had headaches, a swollen face, went partially blind for 45 minutes and has puffed eyes.

“I had to restrategise and reduce my wailing,” he said, adding that he was determined to see it through so is now sobbing towards his target, even though he has not applied to GWR so it won’t be an official record.

Many Nigerians who find the slew of attempts cringeworthy say Ms Baci unlocked Pandora’s box.

And it is not as though the country is short of record holders:

    • Tobi Amusan – Women’s 100 metres hurdles
    • Gbenga Ezekiel – Most skips in a minute on one leg

    and my personal favourite:

    • Chinonso Eche, who holds records for: most consecutive football touches in one minute while balancing a football on the head; fastest time to 1,000 football touches while balancing a ball on the head; most football headers in a prone position in one minute and most football touches in a seated position while balancing a ball on the head in one minute.

But none of those generated as much buzz as chef Baci, who had a huge publicity machinery behind her.

“We did a lot of background work,” said Nene Bejide, head of the public relations firm that handled the branding.

It yielded results on the day – Ms Baci had a call from the former vice-president, a visit from the Lagos state governor, record holder Amusan stopped by, as did a never-ending stream of celebrities and well-wishers.

Aside from the stardom and fame that an attempt garners – seen through an instant swell of social media followers that elevates one to influencer status, a digital currency these days – there is also the personal enrichment.

Ms Baci has been given a year’s free travel by a Nigerian airline among other endorsements, chef Dammy received cash gifts. Others have openly solicited donations during their attempts.

“I had to do something that is basically out of the ordinary to put myself on the map, to put Nigeria on the map,” Ms Baci told the BBC after her feat.

It would seem she has done both.

Cameroonian sets goal to cry 100 hours non-stop

A Cameroonian comedian, popularly known as 237 Towncryer, has undertaken a unique world record attempt for the longest continuous crying.

As of Monday, July 10, 2023, he embarked on a crying marathon, which he has dubbed a cry-a-thon, with the goal of setting a new record of non-stop crying for 100 hours.

“I am going in to break the Guinness World Records for the longest time crying,” he wrote on Instagram.

Videos shared on his official Facebook page shows him seated on a chair, visibly distraught, while a laptop placed on another chair displays a timer to track the duration of his crying session. He is based in Lagos, Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Guinness World Records has entreated individuals to limit their desires to break or set world records.

  • Nigeria’s Ekiti govt bans proposed 72-hour kissing marathon for Guinness World Records

Nigeria’s Ekiti govt bans proposed 72-hour kissing marathon for Guinness World Records

The Ekiti State Government has announced a ban on the planned three-day kissing marathon to set the Guinness World Record in the state.

This follows the announcement on social media by Sugartee, a musician from Nigeria, that he will be hosting the proposed 72-hour kissing marathon intended to break the current Guinness World from Friday, July 7 to Sunday, July 10.

He was hoping to break the current record of 58 hours, 35 minutes, 58 seconds set by a Thai couple, Ekkachai and Lakasan Tiranarat, in 2022 on Valentine’s Day.

However, the Ekiti government on hearing the news released a statement banning the event calling it absurd, unhealthy and immoral.

The statement signed by the state tourism director, Adebanji Adelusi, noted that allowing the challenge to proceed would denigrate the image of the state.

“It is a programme that runs counter to the values of the people of the state and is therefore capable of plunging our Youths morally backwards. Given the preceding, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism prohibits hosting such an event or any other events like it in any facility that wishes to continue to operate lawfully in Ekiti State,” parts of the statement read.

“To the above, you are requested to convey the content of this Notice to the members of Ekiti State Hoteliers’ Association to effectively monitor their outlets against being used negatively to cause embarrassment to the Government and People of Ekiti State.”

Meanwhile, the singer Sugartee told Premium Times Nigeria following the ban that he had no intentions of actually hosting the event but only wanted to gain attention with his post.

He explained that previously he had released a song for the state and the government had reacted to it making promises of support but “nothing came out of it.”

Sugartee added that he is thankful for this opportunity which he says has gained him a lot of attention.

“It was all a publicity stunt from the onset. The ban is what is giving people awareness about the name Sugartee right now. At least more people will get to know I’m a good artiste who makes beautiful songs, and that’s a win for me,” he said.

Not only did Hilda’s record-breaking success captivate the Twitterverse, but it also caused a stir on the official Guinness World Records website. The overwhelming popularity of her ‘cook-a-thon’ caused the website to crash for two days due to an astounding surge in traffic from her devoted fanbase.

Hilda’s journey to claim this monumental record took the social media realm by storm, with millions in Nigeria and beyond fervently following her progress via an engaging Instagram live stream.

Driven by her unwavering passion to showcase the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian culinary traditions, Hilda embarked on this extraordinary mission with a clear objective in mind. “I wanted to put Nigerian cuisine on the map,” she shared with resolute determination. “I also chose to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities.”

In an interview with a Ghanaian based media house, the award-winning chef unveiled the numerous challenges she encountered during her awe-inspiring journey to the 100-hour cooking feat.

Hilda revealed that the immense stress of the marathon pushed her to experience her menstrual cycle and accompanying cramps earlier than expected. As a result, she diligently took showers during her breaks to maintain personal hygiene and change accordingly.

Hilda further explained that being on her period reduced the precious time she had for rest, intensifying an already arduous endeavour. “I was on my period the entire time, and I think that sort of made it extra hard. What that meant was it took away from the time I had to rest,” she shared.

Malian breaks world record after giving birth to 9 babies at once

A young mother has achieved a groundbreaking feat by shattering the Guinness World Record for giving birth to a staggering nine healthy babies simultaneously.

Halima Cissé, a Malian mother and her husband, Abdelkader Arby, welcomed the nonuplets on May 4, 2021.

The Guinness World Record says that doctors initially thought Halima would deliver seven babies, but two more babies were detected when she was flown to Ain Borja Clinic in Morocco for specialist care.

The nonuplets were delivered prematurely through a caesarean section in the 30th week of Halima’s pregnancy.

The babies comprise five girls and four boys, and their names are Adama, Oumou, Hawa, Kadidia, Fatouma, Oumar, Elhadji, Bah, and Mohammed VI.

The BBC reports that the children and their mother have returned to Mali after their stay in Morocco.

    Their father said:

They all have different characters. Some are quiet, while others make more noise and cry a lot. Some want to be picked up all the time. They are all very different, which is entirely normal.

The Malian government contributed to the mother’s care and ordered that she be flown to Morocco when she was pregnant.

The father, Abdelkader Arby, has said that caring for the children is a lot of work.

It’s a lot of work but Allah, who gave us this blessing, will help us in their upbringing and taking care of them, he said.

The parents already had a three-year-old girl before the nonuplets were born.

The birth of the nonuplets has captured the attention of people around the world, with many expressing their amazement at the mother’s ability to carry and deliver nine babies at once.

The Guinness World Record has confirmed that Halima Cissé’s delivery of nonuplets is the first known instance of a woman giving birth to nine babies at once.

Abuja restaurant threatens lawsuit against Hilda Baci

Vibe By Ann’s, an Abuja restaurant management, has issued a legal warning to Hilda Bassey Effiong, the renowned chef who broke the Guinness World Record, widely recognized as Hilda Baci. The restaurant alleges a breach of a previously signed agreement and threatens to pursue a lawsuit.

The restaurant reportedly signed an agreement with Baci for a ‘Meet and Greet’ session with her fans.

According to a viral flier that recently surfaced on the Internet, Baci allegedly charged N25,000 for personal meet-ups, live cooking, and food tasting in Abuja on June 24, 2023, at Vibe by Ann’s restaurant.

Reacting to the flier, the world record chef, in a post via her social media page on Friday, cancelled the ‘meet and greet’ session, clarifying that she did not ask anyone to pay such an amount of money.

She wrote: “Hi everyone. This is to inform everyone that I’m not doing any meet and greet in Abuja. I would also never ask anyone to pay for such.”

Reacting to her denial, the management of the restaurant, in a statement, said: “We regret to inform you that the highly anticipated event, scheduled to take place on 24th June 2023, has been cancelled. We extend our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you, our esteemed customers.”

Sharing the receipt of N3m paid to Baci, the management wrote: “Arrangements for this event were already concluded, as both parties agreed to put out publications for the event after an advanced payment was made to Miss Hilda Bassey.

“However, Hilda Bassey suddenly denied publicly having any prior knowledge of the event. Her conduct has negatively affected our reputation as a brand. Consequently, we are taking all necessary legal steps towards ensuring that justice is seen to have been done in this matter.”

  • Hilda Bassey, named the new holder of world record for the longest cooking marathon

Hilda Bassey, named the new holder of world record for the longest cooking marathon

The Guinness World Record (GWR) committee said Tuesday that Nigerian chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci on social media, has been officially recognised as the new record holder for the longest cooking marathon.

Nearly a month after the GWR had looked through the four-day cookathon’s video, the record had been established.

An adjudicator who only went by the name Mark made the announcement in a video uploaded on the official Twitter account of the Guiness World Records on Tuesday. “I can now announce that with a time of 93 hours and 11 minutes, Hilda Baci is the new holder for the Guiness world Records title of the longest cooking marathon,” he said.

The 26-year-old cooked in a makeshift kitchen for four days, starting on Thursday, May 11, and finishing on Monday, May 15, producing almost 100 pots of food, GWR said on its website.

“When I found out, I cried, prayed and screamed,” Bassey told CNN after learning of her record-breaking feat.

“Then I called my mum and we cried some more. I am so happy. Everything and all the hard work was worth it. I said I wanted to be a record holder and now I am. This is for all my team members and for all the hard work,” Bassey added.

Although Bassey cooked for 100 hours, she was penalized for an error in her scheduled rest breaks, according to the world record committee.

“There was a miscalculation when it came to Hilda’s rest breaks, meaning we are unable to award the 100 hours claimed,” the adjudicator said.

The longest cookathon title was previously held by Indian chef Lata Tondon, who cooked for 87 hours and 45 minutes in 2019.

Basey’s record attempt made her star and was so popular that it crashed the GWR site for two days, “due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans,” the organization said.

“I also want to thank Nigerians. They are so awesome. The support was so great. We really did something amazing,” Bassey said.

  • Hilda Baci holds world’s longest cooking marathon – Guinness World Record confirms

Hilda Baci holds world’s longest cooking marathon – Guinness World Record confirms

Guinness World Records says it can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday 11 May and continued through to Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.

As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity.

These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt.

The previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes was set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Hilda attempted this record to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams.”

“I also decided to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities,” she added.

Hilda prepared for the event by creating a 35-item menu “as a guide” for every meal that she would cook.

She ensured that she had the necessary ingredients to make each recipe, with her team procuring further food items while the cook-a-thon was underway “based on what was needed to be topped up.”

Hilda’s record attempt took the world of social media by storm, with millions in Nigeria and beyond following her progress via an Instagram live stream.

Hilda’s cook-a-thon was in fact so popular that our website crashed for two days due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans.

Several high-profile Nigerian figures visited Hilda to support her during her record attempt, such as the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; and award-winning singer Tiwa Savage.

Hilda was required to abide by several rules during her record-breaking cook-a-thon:

    • There must be at least two items being prepared or cooked at any time
    • A sous-chef is permitted to assist in prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but all the cooking must be done by the individual attempting the record

One of the most important rules of our food-related record attempts is that all items must be consumed after cooking. To this end, Hilda invited any and all members of the Nigerian public to come and eat her freshly made meals. All leftover food was donated to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation.

“My team’s and my goal for this event was to make it free to all and to feed the less privileged,” Hilda said.

According to Hilda, each pot of food she cooked was big enough to serve 30-35 people, and “appropriate stock control was conducted” to avoid any wastage of food.

After graduating from Madonna University, Nigeria, with a degree in sociology, Hilda decided to embark on her culinary career. She was inspired by her mother, Lynda Ndukwe, who is also a chef.

Hilda went from success to success, hosting television show Dine on a Budget in 2020, before winning the Jollof Face-off competition in 2021. Representing her native Nigeria, Hilda beat Ghana’s Leslie Kumordzie to claim the victory.

Now, in 2023, she is officially a Guinness World Records title holder. Congratulations, Hilda!
