Angry John Dumelo fumes at “killer rent” advances in Accra

Ghanaian actor and musician John Dumelo expressed concern about the exorbitant cost of rent in Ghana, which is causing hardships for individuals with limited financial means.

According to him, the substantial rent charges imposed by landlords are challenging, not to mention the demand for a two-year advance payment, putting many people in distress regarding their housing situation.

He emphasised that it is crucial for authorities responsible for rent regulations in Ghana to implement measures to address the high rental costs and the increasingly common practice of demanding a two-year advance payment.

“2-3 years Rent in advance is ‘killing’ a lot of Ghanaians… #rentinGhana,” John Dumelo wrote on his X page.

When he asked his followers to share stories about their rent predicament in the country, one individual wrote, “ Young graduate gets a job in Accra and moves here… Where is he/she going to gather all that money to pay rent? Accra rent for 2 years in advance ranges from 3600 – 99999000000 GHC, depending on the area.”

John Dumelo is the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

He aims to challenge the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan, in the upcoming general elections with the goal of representing the constituency, following his initial unsuccessful bid.

Prince David switches allegiance from Lydia Alhassan, backs John Dumelo

The re-election campaign for the Member of Parliament (MP) seat in Ayawaso West Wuogon has encountered increased challenges for Lydia Seyram Alhassan

Prince David Osei, a former supporter who actively campaigned for her during the 2020 election, seems to be withdrawing his support, adding to the complexity of Alhassan’s bid to retain her seat.

The renowned Ghanaian actor and staunch supporter of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a surprising announcement, revealing his intention to throw his support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, John Dumelo. This unexpected shift in allegiance has stirred intrigue in the political landscape.

Speaking in a GHOne interview on December 1, 2023, the actor explained that his decision to support Dumelo despite the fact that he is a member of the NPP is because the current MP has failed to address the needs of the constituency.

He said all attempts to get the MP to listen to the needs of her constituents, particularly students of the University of Ghana, have proven futile.

“Personnel, it would not be shocking if you see me on a platform campaigning for John to win the Ayawaso seat even though he is NDC… I’m NPP but I would support John. You shouldn’t be alarmed if that happens because I feel like when people go all out for you, you don’t take them for granted. I stood on that platform, got a lot of insults because of Maa Lydia.

“At a point, I sent messages to her PA that some of these Legon students are really going through (sic), I have been trying to support you, you’re the MP so hear them. They never replied, nothing happened,” he said.

The actor added, “So personally, I felt like ok, if we are the same people that went there, got all the insults and humiliation all because they said we stood against our friend. Then if John has gotten the nod again, we would support him”.

Lydia Alhassan would face John Dumelo in the 2024 parliament if she emerges victorious in the upcoming NPP primaries which is slated for January 20, 2024.

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has outlined his plans for when he assumes the role of a Member of Parliament.

Currently running for the MP position in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Dumelo shared on his Twitter handle on January 1st that he intends to address the issue of exorbitant rent charges.

Expressing his concern, Dumelo highlighted that Ghanaians are supposed to pay a maximum of 6 months’ rent for residential properties.

However, he pointed out that many landlords demand an upfront two-year rent advance before leasing properties. If elected, John Dumelo has pledged to prioritize addressing this issue as one of his initial actions in office.

“The first thing I will champion when I become a member of parliament is the rent issue. Ghanaians must pay a maximum 6-month rent advance for residential properties,” he posted.

The Rent Control Department of Ghana has cautioned landlords against demanding more than six months’ rent in advance from their tenants, saying this is against the law and can lead to prosecution.

The department’s PRO, Emmanuel Kporsu, in an interview earlier in the year that tenants can voluntarily pay more than six months’ rent in advance if they wish, but landlords cannot force them to do so.

The department’s statement was made in the context of the housing challenges and the demand for affordable and social housing in the country.

1D1F: Even my ginger factory is operational, what do you have to show – Dumelo demands answers

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo,
has raised significant inquiries regarding the financial investment made by the government in the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative.

He has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to transparently disclose the progress of his administration in terms of both expenditure on the 1D1F program and the actual number of factories established.

Dumelo pointed out that, despite taking nine months to establish his ginger factory, the government has not even commenced the fulfilment of its factory promise to the people of the Oti region after nearly eight years in power.

“How much has the government spent on 1D1F so far? How many factories are fully functional and operational? Which specific product (being produced here in Ghana) as a result of the 1D1F initiative has reduced our import bill?

“My ginger factory in Oti is not and cannot be under 1D1F. We built that factory in nine Months. It’s almost 8 years and the government hasn’t even laid a block to fulfil their ginger factory promise to the people of Oti,” John Dumelo wrote on his X page.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond, revealed that from 2017 to the present, there are 296 projects in various stages of implementation under the One District, One Factory (1D1F) Programme.

Breaking down the figures, there are 126 operational companies, 143 companies under construction, and 27 companies in the pipeline phase. K.T Hammond shared this information on Tuesday during a parliamentary session while responding to a question posed by Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Gomoa East.

Paitoo sought details on the number of factories established by the government under the 1D1F Programme and inquired about the extent of collaboration with private companies or organisations.

In response, Hammond emphasized that out of the 296 factories, 233 were initiated by private-sector business promoters with government facilitation, while the government directly established 63 1D1F projects.

“Mr Speaker, it must be noted that the government’s active facilitation of private sector investment in 1D1F projects consists of special incentives, including tax exemptions and the provisions of interest subsidies on loans granted by Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs). It also includes, where applicable, the extension of critical utilities such as access to electricity and water,” said K.T. Hammond.

I have worked with some of them over the last 7 years. I have therefore opened up my farm house to them as extra shelter. God bless us all,” Dumelo stated in a social media post on October 18.

The flooding and humanitarian crisis resulting from the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong hydro dams have severely affected nine districts in the Volta Region. Communities such as Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome, and Anlo have experienced extensive property damage and displacement of residents due to the rising water levels. Self-evacuation efforts by affected individuals and interventions from agencies like the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have been ongoing. The situation has prompted various institutions and individuals to offer relief items to assist those impacted.

In response to the crisis, Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has emphasized the importance of reevaluating and possibly redesigning the Akosombo Dam to enhance its ability to manage spillage effectively and reduce the negative impact on communities and livelihoods. This proactive measure is seen as essential in light of the challenges posed by climate change.

John Dumelo condemns arrest of #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters

Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has expressed his disapproval of the arrest of about 50 protesters who participated in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration on Tuesday, September 21, 2023.

The demonstration, organized by the #FixtheCountry movement, aimed to demand a range of reforms, including a reduction in the cost of living, an end to corruption, and improved governance.

The police had filed an application for injunction seeking to prohibit the protest from moving forth, citing security concerns and COVID-19 protocols. However, the organizers went ahead with the demonstration despite the warnings from the police.

According to eyewitnesses, some police were either in disguised clothing, in their everyday uniform or in riot control gears, while others were on horses, and in buses and pickups arresting protesters, who were mostly clad in black and red. Among those who were arrested were some prominent activists such as the #FixtheCountry convener, Oliver Barker Vormaworand journalists Bridget Otoo.  They were taken to the regional police headquarters in Accra Central.

John Dumelo, National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wougon Constituency, took to his Twitter account to condemn the police’s action. He wrote:

“The arrest of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters is uncalled for. Can’t citizens demonstrate in peace?”

John Dumelo is not the only public figure who has spoken out against the police’s interference. Several Ghanaians have expressed their disappointment and outrage at the police’s brutality on social media. Some have accused the police of being puppets of the ruling elite and of using illegal ways to disrupt the peaceful protest. Some have also questioned the police’s motive for using horses and riot control gears against unarmed civilians.

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration was part of a series of protests that have been organized by the #FixtheCountry movement since May 2023. The movement has been calling for better living conditions and accountability from the government. The movement has also faced several legal battles and obstacles from the authorities in their quest to exercise their constitutional right to protest.

    It’s unclear what the main cause of the fight between the former bff’s is but it’s clear they are not planning on being in each other’s lives anymore. See screenshots below;

  • I didn’t lose 2020 parliamentary election – John Dumelo

    I didn’t lose 2020 parliamentary election – John Dumelo

The candidate representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, John Dumelo, has claimed that he did not lose the 2020 parliamentary election.

He maintained that he considers himself the winner, as he was not far from securing the constituency’s seat.

Dumelo emphasized that his party achieved the best results in the constituency’s history, leading him to refrain from terming it a loss.

He has also expressed his determination to secure victory in the upcoming 2024 elections, highlighting that although his team faced defeat in 2020, they have since formulated strategies to succeed.

“In my perspective, we emerged victorious in the 2020 election. We achieved unprecedented results in the history of Ayawaso West Wuogon. Progress is often marked by initial steps. Shortly after assessing the results, we analyzed and devised plans for winning the forthcoming election,” he elaborated.

Talent manager and entertainment pundit, Mr. Logic has stated that the actor will experience a second defeat in his bid against his contender Lydia Alhassan.

According to him John Dumelo’s demeanor appears to be marked by arrogance and excessive self-assurance, as he because he believes to be the preferred choice of the people.

Mr Logic added that Dumelo’s focus seems to be more on showcasing himself as a member of parliament to validate a certain perspective.

“I was happy Fred Nuamah was contesting John Dumelo, He is boastful and overconfident, he feels to be the people’s favorite and I wanted Fred to prove a point that the people can change. Fred’s withdrawal makes me think he is not confident, however, I personally love Fred Nuamah to John Dumelo”

“If I had the right to vote in that constituency, my choice was Fred Nuamah. Apart from John Dumelo being a hard worker, politically I feel his just hopeful to be an MP to prove a point and my research shows John Dumelo will lose for the second time. The people already have their candidates and my research shows John isn’t the favorite”.

In 2020, the actor-turned-politicia strived to assume leadership in the constituency through a heated parliamentary rivalry with the incumbent, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

Mrs. Alhassan stepped into the role previously held by her deceased husband, Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko, when she participated in and triumphed in the parliamentary election in January 2019.

Based on preliminary results, Lydia Alhassan of the NPP secured 39,851 votes, while Dumelo of the NDC followed closely in second place with 37,778 votes.

Meanwhile, Mr Dumelo has issued a caution to his former 2020 advising her to brace herself for a defeat in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking on TV3, he said the rivalry between him and his friend, John Dumelo for that particular constituency would have been suicidal.

‘I didn’t mind the contest, but I felt like a contest wasn’t needed. It wasn’t necessary because the party looked at Ayawaso West as a different case, because I had contested in 2020.

“We did extremely well, we nearly won, and we lost by a small margin. So it would have been suicidal to change the candidate. So, in a democracy, a lot of negotiations had to go on. As a Democratic party, you had to sit down and do your research, you had to decide that, for this place, let’s change this person, and so on,” he stated.

‘I didn’t mind the contest, but I felt like a contest wasn’t needed. It wasn’t necessary because the party looked at Ayawaso West as a different case, because I had contested in 2020.

The Ayawaso West Wuogon branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has leveled allegations against Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the current Member of Parliament for the constituency, asserting that she has utilized the common fund of the district assembly to finance her political undertakings.

According to the party, the intended purpose of the fund, which is aimed at tackling developmental issues within the constituency’s regions, is not being adhered to.

In a conversation with Citi News, Bismark Aborbi Aryitey, the NDC’s chairman in Ayawaso West Wuogon, mentioned that Alhassan has not provided a clear record of the common fund’s usage.

“Definitely, she has the common fund that she has not accounted for. I am a stakeholder in this constituency. There is no occasion where Lydia Alhassan has even met the Landlord Association to tell them that the common fund that came, I believe this gutter is worrying you, so let me fix it for you.”

“So, it is the common fund that is being spread in the constituency, especially spent on NPP members. However, Ghanaian voters are now discerning.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the NDC at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency has endorsed the candidature of actor-turned-farmer, John Dumelo, ahead of the 2024 general elections.

I’ve dreamt of making a million dollars through farming, not politics – John Dumelo

Ghanaian actor cum politician, and farmer, John Dumelo, has noted that he aims to accrue vast wealth from his farming activities and not politics.

Some Ghanaians are of the notion that individuals venture into politics in order to make huge sums of money.

According to Mr Dumelo, he does not work with such a notion as “I am getting into Parliament to serve my people.”

Mr Dumelo is eyeing the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat once again on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview on TV3 on Monday night, August 14, he indicated that he aspires to one day make a million dollars.

John Dumelo reacts to passport acquisition fraud

Businessman and politician John Dumelo has expressed his frustration with the practise of extorting money from applicants who seek to obtain a passport.

He suggested that, in order to transform this situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration should distribute the application and acquisition procedures across various regions.

During an appearance on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Show, John Dumelo explained that by printing passports in all the regional capitals, the need for intermediaries, commonly referred to as “goro boys,” could be eliminated.

John Dumelo said, “It is quite frustrating, sometimes you have to pay; you have to make a call before you acquire a passport. I feel it should not be like that…”

“Why not decentralise the application and acquisition process?…Why don’t you print in Cape Coast, Kumasi, and the North so that you don’t have to go through these processes?” he stated.

Dumelo’s comment comes after the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, sacked some officers at the passport office for working with goro boys.

These people charge between GH2,000 and GH3,000 for a passport, though the initial amount for standard and expedited services is GH100 and GH150, respectively.

The minister stated that the unannounced visit to the passport was necessary because of reports that some officers were involved in illegal activities.

She said their actions have tarnished the reputation of the passport issuance system.

Moesha has been pressing necks in such a fashion since she fell ill and went off social media for a while, then returned when she was ‘healed’.

Whatever healing was carried out on her doesn’t seem to have worked much as Moesha continues to post confusing content seemingly disconnected from reality. For instance, she claimed just a few days ago that she’s Akufo-Addo’s sidechick and now it appears John Dumelo has also been added to her ‘list’.

This post comes at a time when John Dumelo is celebrating once again becoming the NDC’s Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary candidate.

John Dumelo will not win Ayawaso West Wuogon seat again – Mr. Logic

Renowned entertainment pundit Mr. Logic has made a projection that should Ghanaian actor turned-politician John Dumelo emerge victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries, he might face defeat in the Ayawaso West Wougon constituency vote.

He said his view is based on personal research.

His assertion comes on the heels of Fred Nuamah‘s decision to step back from his initial plans to contest against Dumelo.

Speaking on a panel discussion on UTV’s United Showbiz on August 12, 2023, he voiced his disappointment with Fred Nuamah’s withdrawal from the race, as he believed Nuamah had a better chance at securing victory than Dumelo.

“For me, I was so happy that he (Fred Nuamah) was contesting John because John was too boastful. It seemed like the place belonged to him. He was so overconfident that he was going to win.

“If Fred Nuamah has backed down, I am disappointed with the entire system. I wanted Fred to win because, regarding John, I foresee another loss. He will still lose. Yes, I am telling you, everyone conducts their own research, and my research indicates that John will lose again.

“The people in that area already have their preferred candidates. And merely because he came close last time doesn’t mean he could have won. So, what I am saying is that I feel John will not win this time; he will lose.”

I can boost local onions, tomatoes with half of Cecilia Dapaah’s ‘stolen money’ – John Dumelo

Multi-talented Ghanaian celebrity, John Dumelo, has expressed his determination to lessen Ghana’s dependence on onion and tomato imports.

As a vocal advocate for promoting local agriculture, Dumelo envisions achieving this objective with a fraction of the $1 million allegedly misappropriated from former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

The renowned actor, farmer, and politician plans to utilize the funds to expand his onion and tomato farm while investing in cutting-edge irrigation techniques and high-yielding seeds.

His vision is to bolster local vegetable production significantly, thereby decreasing the country’s reliance on imports from neighboring nations.

  • Dumelo ‘boasts’ of employing 400 people to work on his farms annually

Dumelo ‘boasts’ of employing 400 people to work on his farms annually

Actor-cum-politician, John Dumelo, has disclosed that he provides employment to approximately 400 people annually to work on his farms.

He considers this initiative as his small contribution to Ghana’s economy and takes pride in offering others a means of livelihood.

Dumelo explained that his motivation to venture into farming stemmed from witnessing vast areas of land lying idle in the northern region of Ghana, while the nation continues to import crops that could be cultivated locally.

This realization fueled his desire to make a positive impact by engaging in agricultural activities.

“Ten years ago, I was driving to the Northern part of Ghana and saw huge fertile fields on the roadside, which can help the country farm and have more foodstuff to sustain the country. So I made up my mind to zoom into farming,” he stated.

According to him, agribusiness is a highly profitable venture. However, he expressed concern about the misconception ingrained in the minds of the youth, leading them to believe that farming is solely for elderly individuals or those residing in rural areas.

During an interview with Nana Jantuah on Nhyira FM’s ‘Kuro Yi Mu Nsem,’ Mr. Dumelo emphasized the urgency of investing more in agriculture. He warned that Ghana might find itself importing eggs in the near future if the country fails to prioritize and enhance its agricultural sector.

“When you get to our supermarkets, most of the fruits, ginger, and other stuff are imported, which should not be allowed because if we sit idle, one day we will import eggs,” he cautioned.

The 2020 Ayewaso West Wuogon Parliamentary Candidate of the NDC says he hopes to receive the government’s support to boost his agribusiness.

“I do not get any support from the government; I finance whatever I am doing on the farm. I hope to receive support from the government and trust I will be called on board.

“It is very costly because I use my own money to pay all the workers I have employed; for instance, when it is time for harvesting, you have to pay those who uproot and all the value chain, but I am happy about it because I have created employment for others. I can employ 300–400 workers annually,” said Mr Dumelo.

He added that the only factor that can positively contribute to the growth of agriculture is irrigation.

“Farming is now expensive, but we have the Volta River, Tunu Dam, and other big streams that can be used for irrigation in agriculture in the country. Hence, if we start irrigation farming on tomatoes, maize, and onions, it will reduce our shortage of those items,” he observed.

Mr Dumelo says agriculture is very important, and discussion of how to make it attractive and stabilise prices will all be in the blueprint of his 2024 manifesto.

Ghanaian actor cum farmer John Dumelo now plans to cultivate cannabis as part of his agricultural portfolio.

Mr. Dumelo expressed the hope that growing cannabis is the most reliable course of action after engaging in the cultivation of ginger, tubers, grains, and poultry farming.

His decision comes at the back of the passage of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) Bill, 2023 into law in parliament on July 12.

The passing will grant the Interior Ministry authority to issue license for the cultivation of cannabis which has not more than 0.3% utility content on dry weight spaces for industrial or medicinal purposes.

Welcoming the move, Mr Dumelo said he is excited to witness the defining moment in Ghana’s history.

“I’m very excited Parliament has passed the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023, which seeks to decriminalize the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes. This is a defining moment in Ghana’s history. As a farmer, adding the cultivation of cannabis to my portfolio for medicinal/ industrial purposes is definitely something I’m looking forward to. God bless Ghana.” He wrote on Twitter.

‘Lydia Seyram your downfall is next’ – John Dumelo warns after outcome of Assin North by-election

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, recently issued a warning to Lydia Alhassan Seyram, his contender in the 2020 parliamentary race for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

He advised her to be prepared for a potential defeat in the upcoming 2024 polls.

Dumelo conveyed this message through a tweet on June 27, 2023. His statement came after he celebrated the victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin North by-election, where James Gyakye Quayson of the NDC emerged triumphant, defeating Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

John Dumelo, who contested the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat on the NDC ticket for the first time in the previous election, made his intentions clear with a tweet that read, “Lydia Seyram Alhassan, your downfall is next!”

The Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency has been a hotspot for both NPP and NDC. In the 2020 elections, Dumelo and Lydia Alhassan fought a closely contested race, with Seyram emerging as the winner.

However, Dumelo’s warning suggests that he remains determined to claim the seat in the upcoming elections.

The NDC candidate for Assin North defeated the NPP candidate, marking a significant win for the opposition party.

According to the Electoral Commission’s announcement, James Gyakye Quayson garnered a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15% of the votes.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes, which represented 0.29% of the overall tally.

The by-election in Assin North was held to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following a legal battle that questioned Quayson’s eligibility to hold office due to dual citizenship concerns.

‘Efia I beg’ – John Dumelo tells Efia Odo after she drops photo of them together

John Dumelo, a well-known Ghanaian actor and politician, has responded to a photo that was shared by socialite Efia Odo.

On June 20, 2023, the actress shared an old picture of her and John Dumelo on Twitter.

The shared photo comes in the wake of the recent Yvonne Nelson and Sarkodie controversy, where Nelson talked about her amorous relationship with the singer in her newly released book.

On June 19, 2023, Ghanaians were hit with a shocking revelation. “I am not Yvonne Nelson”, a book written by Yvonne Nelson, details some things she has gone through in life, which include her love life, the absence of her father in her life, and abortion.

With regard to the abortion, the actress disclosed that she had an affair with Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, one of Ghana’s best rappers. She explained that the artiste opted for an abortion because he wasn’t ready to be a father.

The revelation left Ghanaians in shock and also sparked several reactions from netizens and some celebrities like Shatta Wale, Sista Afia, and Victoria Lebene.

While the brouhaha about the incident continued to stir up social media platforms like Twitter, Efia Odo also shared a picture of her and John Dumelo on the internet.

Dumelo, after seeing the photo, reacted, seemingly pleading with the actress not to also start a controversy.

“Efia I beg,” was the politician’s response to the actress’ post.

  • Yvonne told me about being asked to contest 2020 Ayawaso West Wuogon election – Dumelo

Yvonne told me about being asked to contest 2020 Ayawaso West Wuogon election – Dumelo

Ghanaian actor cum farmer, John Dumelo has revealed to Ghanaians that he has been in the known with regards to government’s request for actress Yvonne Nelson to contest in the 2020 Parliamentary elections in Ayawaso West Wuogon

According to Dumelo, he had a call from Yvonne prior to the elections where she informed him of turning down the offer.

According to him, Yvonne said “John, I can’t do that to you, I told them no, I can’t throw away our many years friendship because of politics”.

In her memoir launched last Sunday, Yvonne noted that she had been requested by an influential man in the Akufo-Addo led government to contest the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP.

“The NPP had lost its MP for the area and one of the “wives” of the late MP won the byelection in 2019. The byelection was characterised by violence and resulted in the formation of a commission of enquiry to investigate it.

“She was lacing her boots to contest the seat in 2020. When I drew the attention of the
emissary to the fact that the party already had a candidate, he said the fact that he was contacting me meant that they had concluded their plans and would do everything within their power to pave the way for me to contest if only I was interested,” part of the memoir read.

According to the actress, “I asked him to give me a couple of days to think about it, but I had made up my mind the moment he broached the subject.”

She said she was not interested in the offer as she was not ready to represent the NPP.

“And was I going to allow myself to be someone’s political puppet? Once you accept to be sponsored by them, you lose your independence and they expect unalloyed loyalty from you. This was something I wouldn’t do even if I was interested. This person was the president’s family member. And from the modus operandi of the Akufo-Addo “family and friends” government, I wasn’t going to be their conduit, even if I was interested in going to parliament.”

She also revealed that since her colleague John Dumelo was contesting, she was not going to jeopardise their friendship any further.

“My colleague actor and friend, John Dumelo, was contesting that constituency on the ticket of the opposition NDC and they feared he could unseat the NPP candidate with his celebrity status.

Already, John Dumelo’s political affiliation had strained our friendship. We had had open exchanges on Twitter in the past and I wasn’t going to make things worse by openly contesting him. I wouldn’t betray our friendship to satisfy some people’s political calculations,” the memoir added.

Mother’s day is well celebrated than Father’s day – John Dumelo

Popular Ghanaian actor John Dumelo has sparked a debate about how Father’s Day is celebrated in comparison to Mother’s Day.

According to John, in a recent post on Twitter, he pointed out the discrepancy in the way Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are celebrated.

He emphasized that multinational and local businesses organize Mother’s Day events and giveaways for mothers, whereas fathers often receive little recognition or appreciation on Father’s Day.

“When it’s Mother’s Day, all the multinational/local companies and brands will organize events and do giveaways for mothers. But on Father’s Day, all WE get is……nothing. God Dey.”

This thought-provoking statement has resonated with many, prompting a reflection on the discrepancy in acknowledgement between the two occasions.

Father’s Day, celebrated worldwide on the third Sunday of June, is a special day dedicated to honouring and appreciating fathers and father figures for their contributions to their families and society.

In some social media reactions, a user said, “Mr Dumelo, may I remind you that most of the local and MULTINATIONAL companies are owned and led by MEN.”

Another added, “Fathers dey suffer ooo. A father who earns 5k a month pays kids school fees of 2k bills and expenses of 1.5k gives alimony of 2k and sorts other members. In fact spends over 7k yet has little love”

A third stated, “Which gender occupies the highest positions in those multinational/ local companies?? Men. Let’s blame ourselves.”

  • “Betrayal is an understatement”-John Dumelo on how he feels about Frederick Nuamah

“Betrayal is an understatement”-John Dumelo on how he feels about Frederick Nuamah

John Dumelo, a Ghanaian actor and political aspirant, has recently shared his thoughts on the conduct of his former friend and best man, Frederick Nuamah.

In response to a question on Twitter on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, from a curious fan about his relationship with his opponent, Dumelo expressed that “betrayal is an understatement,” further escalating the tension between the two prominent figures.

The feud between Dumelo and Nuamah initially arose in March when Nuamah accused Dumelo of reneging on his promise to abstain from contesting in Ayawaso West Wuogon.

This accusation followed an interview Dumelo gave to Graphic Showbiz, where he openly expressed his disappointment about Dumelo’s alleged change of heart.

According to Nuamah, Dumelo even gave his blessings when the former decided to pursue his own candidacy. The revelation deeply hurt Dumelo, who vehemently denied the accusations and felt a profound sense of betrayal.

As the dust settled, both individuals found themselves vying for the opportunity to represent the party in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) postponed the primaries, leaving the specific date undisclosed.

Despite their fallout, Fred Nuamah had expressed intentions to mend his relationship with Mr. Dumelo. However, it appears that their efforts have been unsuccessful thus far.

John Dumelo is not my friend; he is my brother, and I would never allow politics to come between us, nor would I allow politics to destroy our brotherhood,” Nuamah stated. He emphasized that their political party, the NDC, is an institution that advocates for unity, making it in their best interest to resolve the matter amicably.

According to Nuamah, the controversy between John and himself, as members of the NDC, would be resolved internally. He suggested that the issue may have already been resolved, considering their close bond and the party’s commitment to unity.

The alleged betrayal has strained their once blossoming friendship, leaving the possibility of John Dumelo forgiving his former best friend and reconciling in the future uncertain.

Stop galamsey now to protect Ghana’s cocoa industry – John Dumelo

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has warned about the dangers of illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, to Ghana’s economy and environment.

In a post he shared on Twitter, he expressed concern that if the galamsey menace is not tackled urgently, Ghana risks losing its position as the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa.

John also highlighted the environmental impact of illegal mining, warning that it could lead to the total destruction of farmlands and the contamination of water sources.

He further emphasised that the use of harmful chemicals such as mercury in the mining process poses a significant risk to the health of people living in mining communities. The long-term environmental damage could also be irreversible.

“If we don’t tackle this galamsey menace, we will lose our spot as the world’s second producer of cocoa. Our farmlands will be totally wiped out, and we will start importing food. The few farmlands left will be SOAKED in chemicals. We will start importing drinking water,” John said.

Cocoa is Ghana’s most important cash crop and a significant contributor to the country’s economy, providing employment for over 800,000 people, many of whom are small-scale farmers.

John Dumelo condemns new 10% tax on gambling winnings

Ghanaian actor turned politician, John Dumelo, has expressed his opposition to the Ghanaian government’s decision to implement a 10% tax on earnings from lotteries, games of chance, and sports betting.

The new tax policy is part of the government’s efforts to increase domestic tax revenue and expand the tax base.

In a tweet, Dumelo criticized the government’s decision and noted that the youth, who have created their own jobs through sports betting and other forms of gambling, would rise against the government if the tax policy is implemented.

He argued that instead of taxing the youth’s winnings, the government should focus on creating jobs and providing economic opportunities for the youth.

“Create jobs; you won’t create. The youth have created their own jobs too; ahhh, you want to tax their winnings…continue. That day will come when the youth will rise against you. It will be too late,” he said.

Dumelo’s comments have sparked a heated debate on social media, with some Ghanaians supporting his position and others criticizing him for promoting gambling and opposing a legitimate tax policy.

John Dumelo is not new to the political scene in Ghana. He contested for a parliamentary seat in the 2020 general elections under the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but lost to his opponent from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, he has remained vocal on issues affecting youth and has used his platform to advocate for their interests.
