Jordi Alba set to reunite with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami

Former Spain international defender Jordi Alba will be joining Inter Miami, where he will reunite with his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, according to owner Jorge Mas.

Mas also hinted at the possibility of additional signings in the near future.

“Jordi Alba will sign today,” Mas told a group of reporters after the team’s training session.

Messi has already been joined by Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, another former Barcelona player, but the club are looking to add some youth to the squad which is struggling in last place in MLS.

Mas said that 20-year-old Paraguayan international defender Diego Gomez was set to join from Asuncion club Libertad.

Another young South American, 20-year-old Argentine midfielder Facundo Farias has a verbal agreement to join the club, said Mas.

The Miami owner added that talks are also underway with two young talents from the Argentine league — Tomas Aviles, a central defender with Racing Club, and striker Brian Aguirre, of Newell’s Old Boys.

But Mas said that any attempt to sign veteran Uruguayan former Barca player, Luis Suarez, was limited by his contractual situation with Brazilian club Gremio.

“Luis Suarez is a Gremio player. He has a contract. We understand the close relationship that he has with Lionel, Busquets and Alba. They played together at Barcelona.

“There’s been a lot of talk about Luis Suarez coming to Inter Miami. We haven’t held direct talks with Gremio or with Suarez.

“I don’t know how Luis Suarez can leave Gremio. But if he does we are free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. That possibility would be there,” he said.

The 34-year-old Alba, who has made 93 appearances for Spain, terminated his contract with Barcelona in May.

Left-back Alba won six Spanish league titles with Barca and was part of the team which won the 2015 Champions League.

He also played in the Spain team which won the 2012 European Championship.

Messi and Busquets took part in their first training session with Miami on Tuesday, ahead of possible debuts on Friday against Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.

  • Rains nearly ruined Messi’s Inter Miami presentation

Rains nearly ruined Messi’s Inter Miami presentation

On July 16, Lionel Messi was officially introduced as a new player for Inter Miami in front of a packed DRV PNK Stadium.

Despite heavy rainfall that threatened to disrupt the event and resulted in a delayed start time, enthusiastic fans filled the venue to witness the arrival of arguably one of Major League Soccer’s greatest-ever signings.

Among the first individuals to make their appearance was David Beckham, one of the franchise owners.

As he stepped onto the wet surface, he nearly slipped but quickly regained his balance, extending his hands for support.

Nevertheless, the inclement weather failed to dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

As the Daily Mail reports, his co-owner Jorge Mas appeared to make fun of the situation as he also held out his hands, pretending to fall over as well.

With the whole world watching and luckily for Beckham, he did not slip. Soon after, Messi followed in tow and was presented to the enthusiastic fans.

Beckham then gave an emotional speech as he welcomed the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“Please forgive me for feeling a little bit emotional tonight. It really is a dream come true to welcome Lionel Messi to Inter Miami.”

He then went down memory lane of the things he wanted to achieve when he went into club ownership after retirement.

“10 years ago, I started my journey to build a new MLS team. I said then that I dreamt of bringing the best players in the world to Florida and the great city of Miami.

Players who shared our ambition to grow soccer in this country, who would inspire the next generation and help build a legacy in this sport.”

Messi is set to make his debut on Friday when Inter Miami play Cruz Azul in the League’s Cup.

    Messi trolled after Miami defeat

Sports Brief also reported that following Inter Miami’s disappointing loss to St. Louis City on July 15, a football fan found delight in the Florida-based club’s defeat and took the opportunity to taunt new signing Lionel Messi indirectly.

Inter Miami has been struggling throughout the ongoing season, as evidenced by their third defeat in their last six games and an 11-game winless streak.

St. Louis City secured their victory with first-half goals from Samuel Adeniran and Tim Parker and a late strike from Eduard Lowen, pushing Inter Miami to the bottom of the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Lionel Messi completes his transfer to Inter Miami

Now that he has been officially announced, Lionel Messi will play for Inter Miami.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was officially welcomed by the MLS team on Saturday, and on Sunday, he will be introduced to the crowd at a spectacular event called “The Unveil.”

Messi left Paris Saint-Germain in June after spending two years with the French powerhouses and helping Argentina win the World Cup in December.

The 36-year-old at one stage looked close to sealing a return to Barcelona, the club he left in 2021 after coming through their academy and scoring 672 goals in 778 appearances.

Messi opted for a new challenge State-side, however, signing a two-and-a-half year deal.

‘I’m very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the United States,’ said Messi

‘This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project.

‘The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set, and I’m very eager to start helping here in my new home.’

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham is among those who has been laying the groundwork for Messi’s arrival for a number of years, hailing his arrival as the start ‘of the next phase our adventure’.

‘Ten years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city,’ said Beckham.

‘[I wanted] players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in the USA and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much.

‘Today that dream came true. I couldn’t be prouder that a player of Leo’s calibre is joining our club, but I am also delighted to welcome a good friend, an amazing person and his beautiful family to join our Inter Miami community.

‘The next phase of our adventure starts here, and I can’t wait to see Leo take to the pitch.’

  • PSG’s ‘very difficult’ spell cost Messi’s return to Barca – Joan Laporta claims

PSG’s ‘very difficult’ spell cost Messi’s return to Barca – Joan Laporta claims

Right after Messi announced his plan to leave PSG, Barcelona launched an effort to bring him back to the team.

Laporta says Messi mentioned  that he no longer has any interest in going back to Camp Nou because of his unhappy time in France, where he was jeered by supporters after being suspended for travelling to Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the president of Barcelona stated: “The player wanted it, the father wanted it, but the rhythms are different. We didn’t want what happened last time.

“He told us that he decided to join Inter Miami because he had spent very difficult seasons in Paris, where he was under a lot of pressure, while in Miami he would be calmer and could think about the national team and that, although he wanted to come to Barça, he didn’t want to spend another year like this.

“It’s understandable and we’re working on a great tribute to Messi that Barca should do.”

Messi became an icon at Barca, winning everything there is to win, but he is set to link up with Inter Miami in MLS after touching down in the United States following an end-of-season break.

Messi is set to make his Inter Miami debut against Cruz Azul in a Leagues Cup clash later this month.

  • Messi arrives in Florida ahead of Inter Miami move

Messi arrives in Florida ahead of Inter Miami move

Seven time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, arrived in Florida on Tuesday to complete his transfer to Inter Miami of the US Major League Soccer.

Messi was captured on camera by ESPN television exiting a private plane at a small executive airport close to the Inter Miami stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Early in the morning, supporters had started to assemble at the stadium in expectation of his arrival.

Before being introduced to the crowd at a stadium event on Sunday, the World Cup winner is anticipated to sign a two and a half year contract, which is said to be worth $60 million annually.

Messi is the biggest name player to ever move to MLS and the most famous to head to the United States since Brazilian great Pele signed for the New York Cosmos in 1975.

MLS hope that Messi will massively increase the profile of the league and boost subscriptions to their streaming broadcast deal with Apple TV. Ticket prices for games likely to involve Messi have already sky-rocketed.

His arrival will also add to the momentum around the sport ahead of the 2026 World Cup which will be hosted by the United States along with Canada and Mexico.

He is expected to be joined at the club by former Barcelona team-mate Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, while ex-Argentina and Barcelona coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino recently took over as coach.

Miami owner Jorge Mas has suggested Messi and Busquets could be part of “three to five” new signings for the South Florida club in the current transfer window.

Another former Barca player, Spanish full-back Jordi Alba, has also been strongly linked with a move to the team, which is co-owned by former England and Manchester United star David Beckham.

Messi is expected to make his debut for his new club in the July 21 Leagues Cup match against Mexican club Cruz Azul.

Miami are currently bottom of MLS’s Eastern Conference with just five wins from 21 games and are ranked 28th out of the 29 teams in the league.

But the club are in the semi-finals of the U.S. Open Cup where they have been drawn against league-leaders FC Cincinnati.

The seven-times Ballon d’Or winner has spent the last two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, after moving from Barcelona in 2021, where he spent the majority of his career.

During his time with Barca, Messi won ten Spanish league titles, seven Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) titles and four Champions League winners medals.

He scored twice for Argentina in the World Cup final which they won on penalties in Doha in December, after the game ended 3-3 after extra-time and raised the trophy as captain.

Messi also won an Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2008 and the Copa America in 2001.

Give Messi the Micheal Jordan treatment – MLS coach appeals to referee org

Lionel Messi’s upcoming debut in Major League Soccer (MLS) is predicted to raise the overall level of competitiveness for Inter Miami in the American league.

As a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi’s presence on the team is expected to elicit a more aggressive and intense approach from opposing teams.

With heightened competition anticipated in the league, there are expectations that the Professional Referees Organization (PRO), the governing body for referees in the US, will have distinct considerations for matches involving Messi.

The presence of such a high-profile player is likely to impact the way matches are officiated and may require referees to adapt their expectations and approach accordingly.

One unnamed MLS coach told The Athletic the Argentine should get the ‘Michael Jordan’ treatment – and also feels he should ‘get every single call’. This could lead to MLS teams implementing their own version of the ‘Jordan rule’.

It may seem like an unnecessary privilege to grant to Messi, but concerns about player safety are not unfounded.

When David Beckham arrived in the league 16 years ago, he was frequently on the receiving end of cynical tackles from lesser-known players eager to get one over on the famous new arrival.

    Veteran referee for Messi’s debut

Messi’s transfer was announced more than a month ago but he is yet to join up with his new teammates. An official date for his debut has not been confirmed, but he could play in the Leagues Cup game against Cruz Azul on July 21.

He will then make his MLS debut the following month, once the league resumes.

With this major moment in mind, referee, Robert Sibiga, wants to see the very best of the American league’s referees in charge of any and all games involving Messi.

“PRO will have to be very particular about who they’re going to bring,” Sibiga said, as quoted by Diario AS. “It has to be veterans. It has to be experienced referees. If we don’t, then we’re going to miss the mark and we’re going to do a disservice to the game.”

    Beckham paints Messi mural

Sports Brief also reported on Inter Miami co-owner, Beckham helping with a Messi mural in the city as excitement builds over the Argentine’s debut in MLS.

The league is preparing for the arrival of its biggest-ever signing, with the veteran expected to sign up on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

GOAT Beer: US celebrates Messi with special beer as star’s move is anticipated

Lionel Messi’s anticipated move to Inter Miami is already being celebrated in the United States, even before his arrival.

A special edition lager called ‘GOAT Beer’ has been created in honor of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Messi, who recently became a free agent after the conclusion of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, has agreed to join Inter Miami.

While he is yet to land in Miami, the city is abuzz with excitement, and the local Prison Pals Brewing Co. has released a beer with Messi’s iconic No. 10 printed on the front.

The ‘GOAT’ beer can features a predominantly pink design, resembling the colors associated with Inter Miami, with black fonts.

This unique brew pays tribute to Messi’s status as the greatest of all time and serves as a precursor to his upcoming journey with the American club.

Interestingly, Prison Pals CEO Juan Pipkin met co-founder Bruno and brewmaster Diego in Argentina and subsequently moved to the USA to set up a brewery.

The Adidas store in Miami already has huge cut-outs of Messi with the Argentine donning an Inter Miami kit with No. 10 on his back.

It carries a slightly tweaked version of Adidas’ slogan “Impossible is nothing” to “Impossible is coming”.

Messi is expected to make his debut for the David Beckham co-owned MLS franchise against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on July 21.

Barca trio: Jordi Alba reportedly to reunite with Messi, Busquets in Miami

Inter Miami’s pursuit of Jordi Alba is gathering momentum. The 34-year-old left-back, who recently departed Barcelona, is currently a free agent, according to the Athletic.

The MLS club is reportedly becoming increasingly confident that a deal can be reached to bring Alba to their team.

During his remarkable 11-year tenure at Barcelona, Alba made 459 appearances and won an impressive 16 major titles, including five LaLiga titles, five Copa del Reys, and the UEFA Champions League.

If the transfer goes through, the Spain international would reunite with former teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami.

Jorge Mas, the managing owner of the club, revealed last week that negotiations with Alba were already underway.

  • ‘Messi incarnate’ picks Real Madrid over Barca ahead of summer transfer

‘Messi incarnate’ picks Real Madrid over Barca ahead of summer transfer

Arda Guler of Fenerbahce has reportedly rejected Barcelona’s offer and instead opted to join their fierce rivals, Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old, considered one of Europe’s most promising talents and likened to Lionel Messi, is set to sign with the 14-time Champions League winners.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona made significant efforts to attract the attacking midfielder, but he ultimately chose Real Madrid.

The deal is expected to be finalized this week, with Real Madrid paying slightly over Guler’s €17.5 million release clause.

Guler, who has already earned four caps for the Turkish national team, has played 51 matches for Fenerbahce, scoring four goals and providing nine assists.

Additionally, Madrid is reportedly willing to offer more than the release clause and Fenerbahce will retain a 20% sell-on clause.

The signing of Guler would be part of the club’s policy of attracting young talent, which has brought the club so much success in recent years, and which this season has had another chapter with the signing of Jude Bellingham when he was only 19 years old.

    Fine season at Fenerbahce

In the 2022-23 season, he made 35 appearances, scoring six goals and registering seven assists for Fenerbahce.

One of his most recent and best performances came in the Turkish Cup final when they defeated Basaksehir 2-0.

He was decisive with an assist and he picked up the Man of the Match award.

    Milan joins Guler transfer race

In a previous report, Sports Brief stated AC Milan are also keen to beat Barcelona and Real Madrid, in their pursuit of Fenerbahce star, Guler, who has been likened to Lionel Messi.

Guler has since broken through Fernerbahce’s first-team plans, helping them lift the Turkish Cup last season.

Should Guler secure a transfer to AC Milan ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, he could prove to be a great coup for them. He would likely fill the void left by Brahim Diaz, who has re-joined Real Madrid.

  • It took three years to get Messi to Inter Miami – Owner

It took three years to get Messi to Inter Miami – Owner

Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas has revealed it took three years of negotiations to bring Lionel Messi to the Major League Soccer club.

The Argentine World Cup winner, 36, is set to be officially announced as a Miami player after ending his two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi’s arrival is sure to spark a huge influx of interest in MLS and Mas has revealed just how much effort it took to bring the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to Florida.

He told Spanish newspaper El Pais: “In 2019 [when Messi was still at Barcelona], we started thinking about how we could bring him.

“I spent three years on it, a year-and-a-half [working] very intensely.

“There were many conversations with [Messi’s father and agent] Jorge. [Inter Miami co-owner] David [Beckham] talked to Leo, only about football issues, because he was a player.”

Messi had been strongly linked with a return to Barcelona this summer but the Catalan giants did not have the finances to secure the deal.

He is also thought to have turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal in favour of a switch to the United States.

Mas added: “I saw it as done at the end of May. I didn’t want him to feel under pressure.

“We had spoken in Barcelona, Miami, Rosario, Doha — I spent the whole World Cup in Qatar, watching Argentina.

“The Apple contract was very important to close the deal.”

Former Barca boss and fellow Argentine Gerardo Martino has recently been named manager of the Eastern Conference’s bottom-placed side, with ex-Blaugrana midfielder Sergio Busquets also joining.

And Mas says they have looked at bringing more of Messi’s former team-mates to the Sunshine State.

On interest in Luis Suarez and Angel Di Maria, he said: “He [Suarez] is under contract, he has a clause, and I don’t know if this will materialise.

“We have also spoken to Di Maria but it seems that he is about to sign for another team.”

  • ‘Best option’ as Iniesta commends Messi for snubbing Barcelona for Inter Miami

‘Best option’ as Iniesta commends Messi for snubbing Barcelona for Inter Miami

Andres Iniesta does not hold Lionel Messi responsible for turning down a return to Barcelona, as he believes the legendary Argentine chose the “best option” for himself.

At one point, it seemed like the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner would make a comeback to Camp Nou after deciding not to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

Discussions took place between the involved parties, but Messi ultimately opted to pursue an American dream by joining Inter Miami in MLS.

Iniesta, who spent may successful years working alongside Messi in Catalunya before making his own move in 2018, has told DAZN of seeing his former team-mate favour the United States over Spain: “It would have been nice, special for what it means, but in the end, everyone looks for the best option, what they think will be good for them and, from there, they will probably live a different experience to what they have lived before.

“If it’s what he was looking forward to and what he wanted, I’m sure it will go well, as he did well in all the places he’s been.”

While Barca be without Messi in 2023-24, they still have the likes of Pedri at their disposal.

The talented 20-year-old is considered to be the natural heir to Iniesta at Camp Nou, with the man himself saying of the youngster’s ongoing development: “As young as he is, he is already a reference point, an important person in the team with a lot of influence in the game and, surely, this evolution that he has had during this time will continue.

He is in the best team to continue growing and I am convinced that he will have another great season.”

Barcelona claimed the Liga title in 2022-23 for the first time in four years and are in the process of bolstering their ranks – with a deal already done for Ilkay Gundogan – despite seeing club legend Messi decide to head elsewhere.

  • Barcelona still owe Messi wages expected to be paid until 2025

Barcelona still owe Messi wages expected to be paid until 2025

Despite Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona in 2021, the club continues to pay him, even though he has not played for them since then.

The Argentine superstar was one of the first players to agree to salary deferrals under the previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, in order to alleviate Barcelona’s financial struggles.

According to Marca, Barcelona’s current president, Joan Laporta, has disclosed that the club still has outstanding payments owed to Messi, which are anticipated to be settled by 2025.

This indicates that Barcelona is honoring their financial commitments to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, despite his absence from the team.

“What is owed to him is the deferral of wages that was agreed with the previous board and that produces outstanding payments that end in 2025,” he said.

Messi turned down a bid to return to Barcelona this summer, despite being available as a free agent following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain after two seasons.

    Details of Messi’s Miami contract

Meanwhile, Daily Post reports that Messi will earn around $50-60 million per year at his new club Inter Miami after sealing a deal with the Major League Soccer side this summer.

Inter Miami’s co-owner, Jorge Mas has shared the details of Messi’s contract after he agreed to move to the United States after his contract with PSG expired on June 30.

The 2022 World Cup winner and seven-time Ballon d’Or holder will also receive shares from Apple and Adidas as part of his contract.

    Messi set for Ramos reunion

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Inter Miami are reportedly in talks with Sergio Ramos over a transfer to the United States, which could see him link up with his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Messi.

Following the expiry of his PSG contract, Messi is now officially a Miami player, as is his former Barcelona colleague, Sergio Busquets, who moved to the MLS side as a free agent.

Inter Miami, which is co-owned by David Beckham, have opened talks with Ramos about a potential switch to Florida.

  • Barcelona, Real Madrid race for Signature of Arda Guler

Barcelona, Real Madrid race for Signature of Arda Guler

The talented young midfielder from Fenerbahce, Arda Guler, is currently in high demand, with Real Madrid and Barcelona expressing strong interest in signing him.

Both clubs are making significant efforts to secure the 18-year-old attacker, and the next few hours could prove crucial in determining his future.

Guler has a buy-out clause of €18 million, which has further fueled the competition for his signature.

Barcelona appears to have gained an advantage in the race to sign the Fenerbahce prospect, as their sporting director, Deco, traveled to Istanbul for negotiations.

Positive discussions have taken place between the two clubs and the player’s representatives, leading to a tentative agreement that would see Guler join Barcelona in 2024.

However, Real Madrid has also entered the picture, with club legends Emilio Butragueno and Roberto Carlos planning a visit to pursue their interest, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

With Real Madrid now officially joining the battle for Guler, they are expected to pursue the signing with great determination.

Acquiring Guler would align with Real Madrid’s strategy of attracting and nurturing young talent, which has been a key factor in their recent success. This season, they continued this approach by signing Jude Bellingham at the age of 19.

Guler has become one of the most sought-after young talents in football following an impressive breakout season at Fenerbahce.

Although he is under contract until 2025, his reported release clause of €18 million has attracted the attention of several top clubs across Europe.

Madrid’s greater financial freedom may ultimately win the day. While Laporta has managed to pull a range of financial levers in his latest term as president, the club still remain in huge debt according to reports from Diario AS.

    Milan joins Guler transfer race

In addition to Barcelona and Real Madrid, AC Milan is also reportedly interested in securing the services of Fenerbahce sensation Guler, who has drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi.

Guler has emerged as a key player for Fenerbahce, contributing to their success in winning the Turkish Cup last season. AC Milan is determined to outbid their competitors in the pursuit of the talented midfielder.

Inter Milan chooses Messi to win Ballon d’Or title over Haaland

Javier Zanetti has expressed his support for Lionel Messi to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or award, even though Erling Haaland won a treble in his first season with Manchester City.

Both Messi and Haaland are strong contenders for the prestigious award this year, given their exceptional performances for Argentina and Manchester City, respectively.

As reported by Sportskeeda, Zanetti believes that Messi’s achievement of winning the World Cup with his country surpasses other accomplishments and puts him in the prime position to secure his eighth Ballon d’Or title.

“I think Messi deserves it because he managed to fulfil his dream of winning the World Cup as an absolute protagonist. In my opinion, he’s been the best for several years.”

The veteran led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, his country’s first since Diego Armando Maradona last won the title for La Albiceleste in 1986.

Neymar compares to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at age 30

Given their incredible accomplishments in the sport, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are recognised as the GOATs of footballers, but Neymar is not far behind either superstar.

While Messi and Ronaldo have won many Ballon d’Ors throughout their careers, Neymar has yet to receive the honour despite being one of the best players in the world.

At the age of 30, Neymar has recorded an impressive tally of goals and assists, placing him second only to Messi.

With a total of 627 goal contributions, Neymar has outperformed Ronaldo, who has 617 goal contributions.

Messi, on the other hand, leads the pack with a remarkable 796 goal contributions.

Thus, while Ronaldo trails closely behind Neymar, it is Messi who holds the top position in terms of overall goal contributions at this stage of their careers.

The Brazilian forward scored 71 goals for Santos, 105 goals for Barcelona, and 105 goals for PSG, Transfermarkt reports.

    Neymar hails Cristiano and Messi

Meanwhile, Neymar has admitted it is difficult for anyone to compete with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in football due to both superstars’ achievements, Sportskeeda reports.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has competed against the multiple Ballon d’Or winners several times in his career and reveals Ronaldo and Messi are the benchmarks of greatness in modern football.

Messi has won seven Ballon d’Or awards, while Cristiano has bagged five in his career but now both players have moved out of Europe after two decades.

It was reported that Neymar has auctioned Paris Saint-Germain’s tribute award to Lionel Messi during the third edition of the Brazilian superstar’s charity auction in Sao Paolo.

The Ligue 1 giants awarded Messi the special tribute award after announcing his departure from PSG, after spending two years with the Parisians.

Famous streamer, Casemiro, won the third-most expensive item of the night as he offered $173,000 for the Lionel Messi trophy.

  • What Inter Miami expects from Messi – Coach speaks

What Inter Miami expects from Messi – Coach speaks

Inter Miami is set to unveil Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets as their new players. While Busquets’ signing has already been announced, Messi’s announcement is expected to follow soon.

There has been some skepticism surrounding Messi’s move to Major League Soccer (MLS).

However, Inter Miami’s new coach, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, who is a long-time friend of Messi, emphasized that Messi’s decision to join the club is purely based on business and the desire to win, rather than the allure of Miami’s sunny beaches.

Martino made these remarks during his introductory press conference, as reported by Football Espana.

“When we spoke with Leo, yesterday I spoke with Sergio, we talked about arriving to have success, to compete and compete well,” Martino said.

“This happens to us even on a personal level, sometimes we associate the United States, Miami, [with] holidays — this isn’t that. We want to compete… they are not footballers who are going to come here to not compete.”

Martino, who was announced on Wednesday as Inter Miami’s new head coach, is following Messi and Busquets to Miami, both of whom revealed their decisions to join the MLS club earlier this month.

    Martino speaks on Inter Miami

The accomplished Argentine manager — who, as reported by ESPN, was crowned MLS coach of the year in 2018 — has coached both players before, as he worked with Messi and Busquets during his stint with Barcelona from 2013 to 2014 and Messi on the Argentine national team from 2014-16.

But Martino said his decision to join the club premeditated Messi and Busquets hopping aboard.

“I started the talks before [the additions of Messi and Busquets],” Martino said. “I always found this opportunity attractive…let’s just say that the presents arrived next.

Messi, Martino, and Busquets will have a steep road to climb to get Inter Miami back into the race.

The MLS team now on a seven-game losing run and is in last place in the league standings.

Martino thinks that Messi’s addition will significantly boost the American soccer league’s growth.

“That the best player in the world decides to play in this league, obviously it will open up an even better panorama for that growth. I believe that the United States is not a country that misses out on this type of opportunity.”

Barcelona president Joan Laporta speaks on Messi’s failed Barcelona return

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has shed light on why Lionel Messi did not join the club this summer, despite Barcelona being his preferred choice, according to reports from Sportskeeda.

After Messi announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona was seen as the frontrunners to re-sign the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Laporta has now revealed that Messi’s desire to take a break from the spotlight, following his challenging two years at PSG, led him to choose a move to MLS side Inter Miami.

Despite Barcelona offering the 36-year-old superstar a return to Camp Nou, discussions with Messi’s father, Jorge, indicated that he preferred a break from European football.

It’s worth noting that Messi still holds the record as Barcelona’s all-time leading goal scorer, having scored an impressive 672 goals and provided 303 assists in 778 appearances for the Catalan giants.

    Barca to host Messi tribute

The date for a prospective farewell to the superstar at Camp Nou has been confirmed by Joan Laporta, according to Goal, thus Lionel Messi is poised to make a historic return to Barcelona.

The day the Spotify Camp Nou opens, according to Laporta, would be a great time to pay a particular tribute to Messi, who joined Inter Miami this summer.

The president of Barcelona continued by expressing his sadness about having to say goodbye to Messi in 2021 because Barca was unable to pay for the legendary player to sign a new deal.

    Messi’s Intentions in the MLS

Earlier, it was reported Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets are expected to be unveiled as new Inter Miami players. The latter’s signing has already been announced, while Messi’s is expected in the near future.

  • Kylian Mbappe wishes for ‘Messi-style deal’ when he leaves PSG

Kylian Mbappe wishes for ‘Messi-style deal’ when he leaves PSG

Kylian Mbappe is said to desire a contract comparable to Lionel Messi’s arrangement at Inter Miami when he eventually departs from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), according to reports.

The 24-year-old French superstar is anticipated to leave the Ligue 1 giants either during this summer transfer window or potentially next year, and he is likely to receive numerous offers.

However, any club interested in signing Mbappe will need to meet the demands set forth by the World Cup winner.

According to Okdiaro, Mbappe wants his next contract to include a series of variables that would see him earn money from the income generated by the sports brand.

It would also include payments from a portion of television rights, similar to Messi’s contract in the MLS.

Messi made the move to the USA after his contract expired with PSG this summer.

All this extra payment would come on top of a contract that would likely be similar to the one he is on with PSG.

It is thought that Mbappe is currently earning £1million-per-week as his normal salary.

However, the report claims that he has been paid almost £300m in bonuses.

Real Madrid appear to be the favourites to sign Mbappe, having come close to signing him last summer before he signed a new contract with PSG.

However, there is interest from Premier League sides in signing the French superstar.

Liverpool are willing to pay £215m to PSG in order to sign the forward as his future remains up in the air.

Fifa agent Marco Kirdemir told Marca: “Liverpool is competing with Real Madrid and wants to pay a fortune for Mbappé, that fortune he speaks of would be around 300 million.”

He added that PSG chiefs in Qatar are fuming with Mbappe’s contract stance.

He continued: “They told me that they are very angry. They wanted and were confident that he was going to renew. The Emir is very upset.”

However, Los Blancos still are said to be “hopeful” of completing the signing this summer.

Both they and PSG are said to be in agreement over doing the deal, although they remain £68million apart when it comes to the fee.

    Who is Gerardo Martino?

Gerardo Martino is a revered football tactician known for his astute understanding of the game. His impressive career has predominantly taken place in Latin America, as well as coaching the prestigious Spanish La Liga club, Barcelona.

“Tata has coached at the highest levels, and we believe that experience will be hugely beneficial to us as we aim to compete for titles here.”

Martino, who has a wealth of experience in coaching, having previously coached the Mexican, Paraguay and Argentina national teams, is expected to turn the dwindling fortunes of the club around.

“Tata is a highly respected figure in our sport whose track record speaks for itself,” said Co-Owner David Beckham. “We are confident that his achievements in the game and experience as a head coach will inspire our team, excite our fans, and look forward to seeing the impact he will have on and off the field.”

According to Defensa Central, Messi allegedly encouraged Mbappe to pursue his dream of becoming a Golden Ball winner by considering a move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Ahead of Lionel Messi’s official introduction as a player for Inter Miami, one of his new teammates is generating attention, albeit for unfortunate reasons.

Goalkeeper Nick Marsman is currently recovering from a venomous spider bite that occurred while he was on vacation in Florida.

Marsman, who will have the opportunity to play alongside Messi, experienced this distressing and painful incident.

Confirmation of the incident came from Marsman’s wife, Nathalie Den Dekker, who shared images of her husband in the hospital on Instagram.

    De Dekker followed it up with a bittersweet caption that read;

“The downside of living in a tropical climate… is when you go to the zoo and get bitten by a poisonous spider. End up being hospitalised for three days.”

She then further revealed that the former Feyenoord star was already discharged and was continuing with his recovery at home.

As the Mirror reports, Marsman has hardly played this season, with Drake Callender often preferred as the number one choice.

The 36-year-old, widely regarded as one of the finest strikers of his generation, is said to be considering this decision due to persistent knee pain.

Despite making 25 appearances for Grêmio this season, Suarez has reportedly informed the club about his intention to retire as a result of the troublesome knee injury, according to Marca.

This new development all but quashes any possibility of Suarez’s reunion with his long-time friend and former teammate Lionel Messi.

Messi recently agreed to join Major League Soccer outfit Inter Miami, and it was rumoured that Suarez could follow the Argentine.

    Suarez’s career timeline

Regardless of his decision, there is no denying that Luis Suarez has had a career many football players would love to have.

He came up with FC Nacional in his home country before moving to the Netherlands at the tender age of 19, joining Dutch outfit Groningen, as per Transfermkt.

At Groningen, he impressively netted 15 goals and seven assists in 37 games, attracting the interest of FC Ajax, who wasted no time taking up his services.

It was at Ajax that Suarez really made a name for himself, bagging 111 goals and 68 assists in three seasons with the club, eventually joining Liverpool in January 2011.

His 11-year stint in Europe also saw him play for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, but it was at Barca where he will be remembered fondly as one of the members of the most formidable attack in history also comprising of Lionel Messi and Neymar.

As part of the notorious MSN at Barcelona, Suarez netted 195 goals and got 113 assists as he won four La Liga title , the Champions League and other pieces of silverware with the Catalan giants before leaving in 2020.

Despite a fairly decent career, Gyan’s football stint has been filled with heartbreaking moments as well.

  • Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi stand out as top-performing stars in the 2022-23 season

Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi stand out as top-performing stars in the 2022-23 season

In the 2022-23 season, several well-known players made a significant impact across Europe’s top five leagues.

Through analyzing the statistics, we can identify the standout performers among them.

Goals: Erling Haaland (Manchester City) — 36

Manchester City sensation Erling Haaland blew away all competition in the goalscoring department last season.

The 22-year-old bagged 36 strikes in 35 Premier League appearances, with Harry Kane the only other player in Europe’s top five divisions to break the 30-goal mark.

    Assists: Lionel Messi (Paris Saint-Germain) — 16

Kevin De Bruyne and Antoine Griezmann also delivered 16 assists, but Lionel Messi gets the nod by virtue of the fact he scored the most goals of the three (16).

Despite his consistent output, the Inter Miami-bound Argentine World Cup winner was at times booed by Paris Saint-Germain supporters.

Bruno Fernandes did not have his most productive season with Manchester United in terms of assists, but still exhibited his creative talents.

The Portuguese maestro also led the way in Europe’s top tiers for big chances created with 32.

    Take-ons: Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) — 112

Real Madrid flyer Vinicius Junior really is a full-back’s nightmare.

On top of completing the most take-ons, the 22-year-old scored 10 goals and notched nine assists from his 33 LaLiga appearances, enhancing his reputation as one of the world’s best wingers.

Passes: Lewis Dunk (Brighton) — 2,900

Lewis Dunk’s evolution into a pass master from the back has been one of the catalysts for Brighton’s rise over the past two years.

The England international, 31, also had the most touches of any player with 3,520.

Tackles: Joao Palhinha (Fulham) — 147

Joao Palhinha’s rapid adaptation to the demands of Premier League football played a major role in Fulham finishing 10th and avoiding relegation with ease.

But the ex-Sporting lynchpin’s love of tackling did see him also pick up the joint-most yellow cards last term (14).

Lyon centre-back Castello Lukeba, 20, is one of the brightest defensive prospects in Europe — and he loves making interceptions.

He is also pretty good with the ball at his feet, ranking 20th for passes completed (2,026) with an impressive accuracy to boot (90.37%).

Aerial duels won: Philipp Hofmann (Bochum) — 214

Bochum striker Philipp Hofmann, 30, helped the club finish 14th in the Bundesliga and survive the drop with his eight goals and two assists.

Unsurprisingly, three of those goals were headers, which came in victories against Eintracht Frankfurt, Union Berlin and Hertha Berlin.

Clean sheets: Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona) — 26

Barcelona stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen equalled the LaLiga record for most clean sheets tallied in a season with 26.

The Germany international conceded only 18 goals in the Spanish top flight — the lowest total in Europe’s top five league — and ranked fourth for passes completed among goalkeepers (1,011).

Saves: David Raya (Brentford) — 154

David Raya looks destined to leave Brentford this summer after a superb season with the gloves.

On top of his 154 saves, the Spaniard was the keeper with the most final third passes (118) and most long passes (410) completed in the Premier League.

Indonesian fans disappointed after Messi withdrew from friendly match

Lionel Messi’s decision to withdraw from a friendly match in Jakarta left Indonesian fans disappointed.

One fan, who had embarked on a 12-hour boat and plane journey to attend the game, accused the organizers of false advertising.

Over 60,000 tickets had been sold for the sold-out match between Indonesia and the World Cup champions, Argentina, with Messi’s face prominently featured in the event’s advertisements.

However, on Thursday, fans in the football-loving country were informed that their beloved hero would not be participating.

“I’m feeling sad and disappointed, mixed emotions,” 31-year-old shop owner Surya Wijaya Ang told AFP from the remote island of Banda Neira in the eastern province of Maluku.

“This was the biggest chance for me to see Messi play in person.”

On Thursday the Argentina side beat Australia in another friendly in the Chinese capital Beijing, with head coach Lionel Scaloni confirming that Messi would not make the Indonesian leg of their Asian tour.

Having become a major fan of Messi during the star’s time at Barcelona, Ang has amassed a collection of around 200 jerseys adorned with his name.

He is planning to take a boat to the eastern Indonesian city of Ambon before catching a four-hour flight to Jakarta to attend the match.

Ang sold seven shirts from his wider jersey collection to pay for the 1.2 million rupiah ($80) match ticket, a steep price in the lower-middle-income country.

    ‘Marketing strategy’

The Messi fanatic is aggrieved and said organisers had seemingly promised an appearance by the superstar.

“Messi is an icon and you can say that 90 percent of the tickets were sold because of Messi,” he said.

“This was a marketing strategy for them.”

Other Indonesians took to social media to convey disappointment, with one offering to sell two tickets “because Messi is not coming”.

A video posted on Twitter showed a fan singing a guitar ballad with the lyrics: “Why don’t you come to Indonesia? Why you don’t come, oh Mr Messi?”

Another wrote: “This is the end of my idolising him… we won’t beg him to come.”

Indonesian football has been enduring a year of crises with a deadly stadium crush and losing the rights to host the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Despite having his Messi hopes dashed, Ang said he would travel to the capital for the game anyway.

“I’ve come this far, so I will still be going,” he said.

“Maybe I will see Lionel Scaloni,” he added, laughing.

Al Nassr fan trolls Messi and Argentina fans by celebrating like Ronaldo in Chinese stadium

In the Beijing Workers’ Stadium, a football fan imitated Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous celebrations after Argentina defeated Australia in a friendly match.

The man, who represented Al-Nassr at the exhibition game, gained notoriety online for imitating Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebrations in front of Lionel Messi supporters.

The fan was seen in the stands, turning to people behind him, and shouting to attract their attention in a video footage posted on Twitter. The ‘SIUUU’ and ‘nap’ celebrations from CR7 were then performed, much to the chagrin of the Messi supporters.

His antics appear to have drawn praise from Ronaldo fans and scorn from sympathisers of the Argentine, with supporters unable to help themselves from drawing comparisons between the two superstars.

Messi’s four days in China so far have been crazy, starting with his immigration incident, to blockades in the streets, cancellation of events, and even complaints of scams, as Marca reports.

The Argentine captain will not travel with the rest of the squad for Monday’s game against Indonesia because he will be released early to begin his holiday period after a long season.

Messi will enjoy a break from football before completing his move to Inter Miami in America, beginning a new chapter in the MLS after departing Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

    Messi scores fastest goal

It was the first time ever that Messi scored inside the first two minutes of a game when he opened for Argentina in a friendly against Australia on Thursday.

As reported by Goal, the 35-year-old featured from the opening whistle against the Socceroos, and it did not take long to make his mark on the game.

Within the opening 120 seconds, Messi capitalised on an assist from Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, to curl a beautiful shot home, marking a career milestone.

    Fan begs Messi to tour

Argentina’s current tour of Asia has got some fans wishing the star would take a tour of their own country while on the continent.

Sports Brief reported on a fan’s emotional plea to Messi through a song, urging the 35-year-old star to visit Indonesia.

His first year under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino was underwhelming, as he only managed to score six goals in the league.

However, he experienced a resurgence under the guidance of Christophe Galtier and went on to lead Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, defeating France in the final.

According to Mirror UK, the 35-year-old confirmed that everything changed after the Qatar triumph. He then departed Ligue 1 for the Major League Soccer in the United States.

    Mbappe questions Messi’s treatment

Mbappe has spoken on the former Barcelona star’s departure and admitted he expected far more from his countrymen towards him.

“We’re talking about potentially the best player in the history of football. It’s never good news when someone like Messi leaves. Personally, I don’t quite understand why so many people were so relieved that he was gone,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He didn’t get the respect he deserved in France. It’s a shame, but that’s how it went. We will have to do what we can to replace him.”

PSG could be without the famous front three next season. Brazilian playmaker Neymar is set to leave after the club ultras protested at his house.

Mbappe also wrote a letter informing the club he would not extend his contract, which expires in 2024. The notice infuriated the club, and they want him sold this summer to avoid losing him for free next summer.

    Piers Morgan trolls Messi

Sports Brief reported that British broadcaster and Cristiano Ronald’s ally, Piers Morgan trolled Messi for moving to the MLS at 35.

Ronaldo was heavily criticised for moving to Saudi Arabia for money at 37 after his interview with Morgan got him into trouble at Manchester United.

This topic of Messi’s acclaimed free kick ability has gained attention and has been reported by Goal as well.

Although he emphasised the importance of constant individual practice, Messi also revealed his former Barcelona teammate, Ronaldinho, and the late Argentine legend who coached him at La Albiceleste, Diego Maradona, taught him a lot.

“It depends on continuous training, and you can improve that skill every day. Ronaldinho taught me a lot and Maradona taught me a lot. But the most important thing is to keep training.”

The former Paris Saint-Germain star will captain the world champions in two friendly games later this month, against Australia on June 15 and versus Indonesia on June 19.

    Messi detained at Beijing airport

Meanwhile, Messi was delayed at the Beijing Airport after allegedly using the wrong passport on his arrival in China ahead of Argentina’s friendly against Australia this month.

The 35-year-old reportedly presented his Spanish passport instead of an Argentine document which could secure his passage through Chinese immigration.

Messi was travelling alongside his international teammates, Angel di Maria, Rodrigo De Paul, and some bodyguards when he was stopped by the airport officials.

As reported by Tribuna, the former Paris Saint-Germain star was briefly detained and was released when it was explained to him that he was using the wrong passport.

Mbappe criticises PSG again, adds that Messi’s departure is bad news

In a shocking interview, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player Kylian Mbappe criticized the club for their disappointing performances and expressed his discontent over the decision to let Lionel Messi leave.

The 24-year-old striker has made it clear that he intends to leave Parc des Princes on a free transfer in 2024.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Mbappe would not be extending his contract with the club, and there were speculations about his potential move to Real Madrid. However, Mbappe clarified to AFP that he plans to remain at PSG for the upcoming season, which will be his last.

But to avoid losing Mbappe in what would be the biggest free transfer of all time, PSG are understood to be looking to cash in on him now if they cannot persuade him into penning fresh terms.

However, it appears that the ex-Monaco forward has already made up his mind, as he explained his reasons for seeking a new adventure to Gazzetta dello Sport.

He said: “For a player like me, the goal is to win everything.

“And we knew that at PSG there were shortcomings that sooner or later we were going to end up paying for.

“I didn’t say I wanted to be sold to Real Madrid or want to leave, but only that I won’t activate the option on the extra year.

“With PSG, there has never been any talk of a renewal.”

    Mbappe discusses Messi’s departure

Mbappe revealed his stance on Messi’s departure after just two years in the French capital, with the 35-year-old set to join MLS outfit Inter Miami.

He remarked: “Messi gone? Bad news now needs to be replaced.

“He’s one of the greatest players in the history of football. It’s never good news when someone like Messi leaves.

“I don’t quite understand why so many people were so relieved that he was gone. He didn’t get the respect he deserved in France.”

Reports have stated that Wilfried Zaha who’s set to leave Crystal Palace on free could replace Messi at PSG.

Meanwhile, PSG could lose another star in their attacking trio this summer with Brazilian winger Neymar linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia.

Sports Brief earlier reported Eduardo Camavinga disclosed his position on the rumours linking Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.

Mbappe’s recent decision not to activate the one-year extension clause in his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain, which expires next summer, has reignited uncertainty about his future.

Speaking on the potential of playing alongside Mbappe at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Camavinga, who is on international duty with France, said, as quoted by MadridXtra:

“You have seen that he has already spoken. I have nothing to say. I would be very happy if he comes to Real Madrid.”

Lionel Messi has stated that he will not participate in the 2026 World Cup with the Argentina national team, as they aim to defend the title they won in Qatar in December 2022.

The 35-year-old forward played a pivotal role in guiding Argentina to their third World Cup triumph in history, ending a 35-year drought since Diego Maradona led the team to victory in 1986.

As reported by Goal, Messi, who will be 39 years old during the 2026 World Cup, has announced that the 2022 tournament was his final one with Argentina, indicating his decision not to be involved in their quest to defend the championship.

“I think not. This was my last World Cup. I’ll see how things go, but not in principle, I won’t go to the next World Cup.”

Messi is Argentina’s all-time goal scorer and records the highest appearance for the Copa America defending champions with 174 caps and 102 goals for Argentina.

    Messi makes Ballon d’Or claim

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has revealed winning the Ballon d’Or does not matter to him at this stage of his career when quizzed in a recent interview about the award, Daily Post reports.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland are among the top contenders to challenge for the 2023 Ballon d’Or.

Messi detained at Chinese airport over wrong travel documents

Over the weekend, Lionel Messi encountered an issue with Chinese border control due to carrying an incorrect passport.

The 35-year-old football star arrived in Beijing on Saturday to join his national team for upcoming friendly matches against Australia and Indonesia.

Messi, who traveled via a private jet accompanied by his close friend Angel Di Maria, plays for Inter Miami.

While the flight itself proceeded smoothly, border security initially denied Messi entry into China.

He was mobbed by officials and could be seen clutching his passport.

According to Mirror Sports, the issue arose due to Messi travelling with his Spanish passport instead of his Argentinian one.

The 35-year-old is believed to have used his Spanish passport due to thinking Taiwan was part of China, and he was reportedly heard in a video asking the border officials: ‘Is Taiwan not China?’

Airport personnel were confused that he’d not brought his native documents, but after a wait of roughly 30 minutes, Messi was granted an entry visa and continued on his way to the training camp.

As reported by Daily Star, Argentina will play Australia on Thursday, June 15, at Beijing’s Workers’ Stadium before moving on to Jakarta the following Monday to face Indonesia at the Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno.

Meanwhile, Sports Brief reported that Australia coach, Graham Arnold said on Tuesday that he wants “revenge” over Lionel Messi’s Argentina when his side meet the world champions in a Beijing friendly next week.

Messi terrorised the Socceroos and scored a sublime goal in a 2-1 win in the last 16 at the World Cup in Qatar, before going on to lift the trophy.

But Arnold’s unfancied team gave Argentina a scare and the Australia coach said they will be taking the match on June 15 in the Chinese capital seriously, even if it is a friendly.

  • Carlos Vela warns Lionel Messi ahead of MLS stint

Carlos Vela warns Lionel Messi ahead of MLS stint

Carlos Vela, the star player for Los Angeles FC (LAFC), has issued a warning to Lionel Messi following the confirmation of the Argentine superstar’s move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami.

Vela emphasized that while Messi’s arrival in MLS is a positive development for the growth of football in the country, it will not change the fact that LAFC remains the favorites for the league title.

Last week, Messi officially announced that he would be joining Inter Miami following the conclusion of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain on June 30.

Despite being linked with other clubs such as Barcelona and Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Messi explained that he sought peace of mind, which influenced his decision to choose Miami.

The player, who was heavily linked with both Barcelona and Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, later revealed that he wanted more peace of mind, which propelled him to choose Miami over others.

Vela, who plies his trade at LAFC since joining from Real Sociedad in 2018, welcomed Messi’s arrival but remains confident about his team’s chances of winning silverware. Speaking to US TV channel TUDN, the Mexican said:

“It’s great news for MLS, but I still think that we are still the ones who want to win the title. It doesn’t matter who is on the other teams. Plans don’t change.”

LAFC find themselves in the third spot in the Western Conference table, are the current MLS Cup holders. Inter Miami, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference rankings.

The MLS’s transfer window opens on July 5, meaning that Inter Miami will not be able to register Messi before then. If he is registered as soon as the window opens, Messi could play his first MLS game against Wayne Rooney’s DC United on July 9.

    Vela vs Messi in Spain

According to Whoscored, Carlos Vela and Lionel Messi faced each other 16 times during their time together in Spain, across La Liga and Copa del Rey.

The Mexican, who faced Messi once as an Osasuna player and 15 times as a Real Sociedad man, lost 10 times and won only on four occasions.

During Vela’s stint at Sociedad, between 2012 and 2018, Messi scored 13 goals against La Real in 18 games across competitions.

The pair faced each other in international colours as well. Messi’s Argentina beat Mexico 4-1 in a friendly in 2008, with Messi scoring once.

In 2015, they played another friendly, playing out to a 2-2 draw. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was on the scoresheet that time as well.

Vela has stated that while Messi joining MLS is excellent news for the country’s footballing culture, Inter Miami will not dethrone LAFC as league-title favourites.

    Suarez speaks on joining Messi

Earlier Sports Brief reported Luis Suarez’s thoughts on joining Messi in the MLS.

The forward dismissed suggestions he could reunite with fellow former Barcelona team-mate Lionel at Inter Miami.

The 36-year-old moved to Gremio at the turn of the year and clearly has no desire of leaving.

Messi debut boosts Inter Miami ticket prices

The news of Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami sparked immense excitement across the United States.

Ticket prices for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s potential debut for his new club have already surged online, reportedly exceeding $9,000 apiece.

The Argentine magician is expected to play his first match for Inter Miami when they host Cruz Azul on July 21.

Goal reports the MLS summer transfer market opens on July 5, so Messi’s debut will not happen until at least next month.

    Potential Messi Miami debut dates

Messi might make his Inter Miami debut on one of three dates marked on the calendar, with the Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul in Mexico on July 21 being the most likely.

The American side will compete on the road twice during that time, taking on DC United on July 8 and Saint Louis City on July 15.

However, Marca has reported it is unlikely that Messi’s debut would take place away from home.

  • Lionel Messi reportedly set to join MLS side Inter Miami

Lionel Messi reportedly set to join MLS side Inter Miami

Lionel Messi, the renowned Argentine football legend, is poised to join Inter Miami, an American team, following his departure from Paris St-Germain, the French champions.

Despite receiving a more financially rewarding offer from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, the former Barcelona player has chosen to reject it.

The Inter Miami deal includes partnerships with prominent brands such as Adidas and Apple.

At the age of 35, Messi, a seven-time recipient of the world’s best player award, is anticipated to win the prestigious accolade again later this year, following his success in the World Cup.

This is the first time Barcelona icon Messi has played outside Europe.

He wanted to remain in Europe for another season but, after no satisfactory offers were received, he had the straight choice between Inter Miami or Al-Hilal.

He was heavily tipped to be favouring a move to Saudi Arabia, where he would have joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the league in a deal that could not be matched financially.

But Messi was ultimately tempted to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami for a variety of reasons including lifestyle, and a deal with big brands that extends beyond football.

He already owns a house in Miami, which he currently rents out.

He was keen on a return to Barcelona this summer but the Financial Fair Play limitations that will be in place for next season in La Liga made any ambitious plan to bring him back an impossibility.

Paris St-Germain won Ligue 1 in both his seasons at the club but went out in the Champions League last 16, which means his time in France was not seen as a huge success.

He netted 32 goals in 75 games for the club – and ended this season with 16 goals and 16 assists in Ligue 1.

Messi’s two-year contract comes to an end this summer and both parties agreed to go their separate ways, with the forward suspended for two weeks in May for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

His legacy comes from his time at Barcelona and winning the World Cup with Argentina in December.

He left Barca in 2021, after 21 years with the club, because of the club’s financial problems.

Messi is Barcelona’s record scorer with 672 goals and won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and seven Spanish Cups.

Argentines immortalise Lionel Messi’s legacy, as they unveil new mural of him

As a tribute to his 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, another stunning mural of Lionel Messi appeared on the walls of a building directly across from a railway station in the capital city of Argentina.

In the painting, Messi is depicted wearing the Albiceleste’s dark purple away shirt, with the national flag flying behind him.

This is not the first time Messi has commandeered Buenos Aires’s walls.

Earlier this year, Goal and Boedo Artistic Group collaborated to construct a mural in the forward’s honour.

Moreover, an Argentine artist named Maxi Bagnasco had also offered his tribute to the player with a mural where Messi is seen holding the trophy aloft, dressed in a Bisht, while Emiliano Martinez is behind him with his arms raised in joy.

    Messi’s Club future undecided

Since announcing his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, Messi has been linked to many clubs in Europe, America and to the Middle East.

According to reports from L’Équipe, the last 48 hours have seen Jorge Messi meet with both Barcelona as well as a Saudi delegation, and talks have recently taken place with Inter Miami as well – for the time being, there is no clear indication as to which continent the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will be playing in next season.

Although the Argentine ostensibly favours a return to Catalonia, the La Liga side’s recent financial difficulties have made a transfer unviable – however, Barcelona have also seen their economic viability plan approved by the league authorities.

In any case, they will need to reduce their wage bill to secure Messi’s return.

In order to convince the Argentine of the feasibility of the move, one option could be for the names of the players who are not in Xavi’s plans for next season to be circulated in the media, in order to encourage them to find a new club.

It remains to be seen, though, whether the Catalans’ efforts will be enough to turn their all-time top scorer away from lucrative offers from the USA and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier Sports Brief reported that Sergio Aguero’s son, Benjamin, took shots at Paris Saint-Germain via social media soon after Lionel Messi’s exit from the club was announced.

The Australian team was defeated by Argentina in the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar, with Messi delivering an impressive goal en route to Argentina’s eventual triumph.

Despite the match being a friendly, Arnold emphasized that his team will approach it seriously and aim to make a strong impact against their opponents.

“I am getting goosebumps now that we can play the world champions so soon after the World Cup and get revenge,” Arnold said, as he named a young squad missing numerous established players through injury, including Celtic’s Aaron Mooy.

“Conditions will be humid and warm, but younger players have that energy and will run all day and fight.”

He added: “It is a fantastic opportunity for all of us to go out there and give it everything we’ve got — the boys will have energy galore and I can’t wait.”

    Graham Arnold

Among those called up were 19-year-old Parma defender Alessandro Circati, who has represented Italy at youth level.

Arnold, who surpassed expectations in guiding Australia to the knockout rounds in Qatar, said that he already has one eye on qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

“I don’t feel there’s any better way to test them out than against the world champions,” he said of his youthful 23-man squad.

Xavi spoke with Messi after PSG defeat

The Catalans need to offload players and comply with the league’s financial constraints.

According to information in the media, the Paris Saint-Germain star has demanded that Barcelona put a formal contract on the table, which is something they cannot do at this stage.

The main stumbling block impeding a sensational return remains the club’s precarious finances – particularly their high wage bill.

In an attempt to lower this, Barcelona have said goodbye to veterans, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets this summer, just six months after veteran defender, Gerard Pique left the club.

Even with a lower wage bill, it remains doubtful that bringing Messi back to Barcelona is viable.

Meanwhile, rumours of a PSG stay have been sparked after the veteran featured in the club’s promotional video for their 2023-24 home kit.

The 35-year-old has made 74 appearances for the French team, contributing to 32 goals and 34 assists while also winning the Ligue 1 in both of his seasons there.

In a video shared on Twitter, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was seen in the audience at the concert at Montjuic Stadium and seemed to be trying to maintain a low profile.

The World Cup winner quickly discovered that was impossible when assembled Barcelona supporters recognised him sitting in the lower stands and started singing his name in unison.

Messi reportedly skipped the annual UNFP ceremony, which recognises the top players in Ligue 1, Ligue 2, and the D1 Arkema (women’s first division) to attend the concert, reports RMC Sport.

The Argentine genius was one of four PSG players nominated for the French league’s team of the year, along with award-winner Kylian Mbappe, Achraf Hakimi, and Nuno Mendes.

    Messi’s condition for Barcelona return

Meanwhile, Messi has requested Barcelona sign his fellow Argentina teammates, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes, ahead of his potential return, Sportskeeda reports.

Both of these footballers played alongside their national captain at Paris Saint-Germain last season before joining Juventus at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

With Juve likely to miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for next season, Messi now wants Barcelona to sign the Argentines as one of his conditions for re-signing for the Catalan giants.

This achievement places the young Frenchman in a league of his own, surpassing the three-time winner Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who also achieved this feat during his time with Paris Saint-Germain.

Asked about his future at the awards ceremony, Mbappe replied:

“There’s no more links about my future? I’m very happy here at PSG and with my choice to be part of this project. I will be here at PSG next season.”

PSG wrapped up the title with one game to spare after a 1-1 draw at Racing Strasbourg on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been given a last-gasp chance to sign Lionel Messi for the struggling Premier League club this summer.

Despite offers from all over the world, Messi wants to stay in Europe and win the Champions League again and the Blues will try to convince the 35-year-old to make the switch to Stamford Bridge.

While Chelsea will not be in the Champions League next season, owner Boehly will not be shy about splashing the cash, and a goal scorer is at the top of his wish list.

  • Emiliano Martinez promises to “cut salary” and bring Messi to Aston Villa

Emiliano Martinez promises to “cut salary” and bring Messi to Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has made an astonishing proposal to bring Lionel Messi to the club.

Martinez, aged 30, and Messi, aged 35, were teammates for Argentina when they won the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the previous year.

Messi emerged as the joint top scorer in the tournament, leading his country to their third World Cup victory.

Martinez played a crucial role in Argentina’s success, making impressive saves in two penalty shoot-outs and earning the prestigious Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper.

He is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after two years, having been booed by his own fans last month.

The Barcelona legend has been linked with a move back to the Catalan giants, although it is unclear whether they will be able to afford his wages.

Messi has also reportedly received a lucrative £350million-a-year offer from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.

But Martinez has come out and offered to reduce his wages in order to bring his fellow countryman to the Midlands.

He told ESPN: “If they are whistling Messi, I would bring him here… at Villa.

“Hey, man, we’ll drink mate, we eat asados [roasted meat] every week. I will cut my salary, we’ll do our best.”

Villa are in line for a Europa Conference League place next season as they sit seventh in the Premier League table.

But a move for Messi remains a somewhat fanciful dream as the Argentine approaches the final stages of his career.

After PSG handed him a two-week suspension for missing training due to a trip to Saudi Arabia, the Ligue 1 champions’ fans booed him upon his return to the side.

And the fractured relationship between Messi and the club has brought an end to any discussions about him extending his stay in the French capital.

“May God protect me!” Al-Hilal star fears dismal over possible Messi presence at club

The potential arrival of Lionel Messi at Al-Hilal, a team in the Saudi Pro League, has created apprehension among some of the current players, who are concerned about losing their positions in the team.

The widely acclaimed seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia after declining an opportunity to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

As per Sportskeeda, Ali Al-Bulayhi, a prominent player at Al-Hilal who had a previous altercation with Messi during the World Cup, is worried that Messi might include him among the players he prefers not to work with, should Messi join the club.

“I do not know what will happen, and I am afraid that he says, ‘I do not want number five.’ I do not know if Messi will come or not, but if he comes, may God protect me! If he comes, God willing, I will not attend the first two days until I monitor the situation from afar so that he may forget me.”

Messi has been offered a whopping €500 million annual deal to join this summer, although Barcelona are also bidding to convince the Argentine to return to Camp Nou.

    Xavi unsure of Messi’s return

Meanwhile, Xavi is unsure whether Lionel Messi will return to Barcelona this summer but has admitted the decision lies firmly with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, 90MIN reports.

The newly crowned La Liga champions are hugely confident of returning the World Cup winner to Camp Nou, even in the face of interest from Al Hilal, who offered Messi a whopping €500 million annual deal.

arcelona recently had their viability plan to sign Messi this summer approved by La Liga as the Catalan club intends to proceed with its quest to bring Messi back to the club.

  • Mourinho jabs Pep, rekindles feud after duo qualify for European finals

Mourinho jabs Pep, rekindles feud after duo qualify for European finals

Similarly, one could argue that, the duo Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola share a similar dynamic, having clashed during their El Clásico encounters in Spain and subsequently crossing paths again in Manchester.

They rank highly in the list of the most successful coaches alongside the likes of Carlo Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson. There has always been loads of respect between the two, but once in a while, a subtle dig is always sent out.

Like what fans believe happened after Mourinho guided AS Roma to another European final on Thursday.

The Special One masterminded another defensive masterclass to see off Bayer Leverkusen to set up a final against record winners Sevilla. This came just a day after Guardiola had equally qualified for his second Champions League final as Manchester City boss.

    What Mourinho said about Guardiola

Mourinho, however, appeared to insinuate that his achievement was much greater than Guardiola’s, given the strength of the squads both have to work with.

The Giallorossi’ haven’t been the luckiest of teams as far as injuries are concerned this season.

“The only teams that do not suffer are those exceptional teams that they have on the bench €40million or €70million players.

Mourinho in a post match interview

If you look at City’s semi-final, they brought on Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez in the second half.

“If we lose four or five players then we suffer. That is natural. At Roma, we have players out injured and others who have not had transfer fees must come in. We invested €7million in the market and we are in the final. What we have done is extraordinary,” as quoted by the Mirror.

The comment opens up an interesting spectacle. Should both managers win their finals, the two veteran managers could meet in the UEFA Super League later this year.

    Mourinho slammed for ugly tactics

Sports Brief also reported on criticism Mourinho received for his tactics against Bayer Leverkusen.

Roma frustrated Bayer Leverkusen in Germany to draw the second leg 0-0 and qualify on an aggregate score of 1-0.

At the Bay Arena on Thursday night, it was a vintage Mourinho performance. His side had zero shots on target as they defended resolutely for the entire 90 minutes.

There were also rampant cases of time-wasting, with the Roma players going down at intervals, much to the frustration of their opponents.
