You have been admirable – Mahama’s message to all dads on Father’s Day

Former President John Dramani Mahama has wished dads across the length and breath of Ghana a happy Father’s Day.

According to the former president, it is essential for fathers to be recognised for the role they play in their family and society.

“I want to take a moment to recognize my fellow fathers, for the incredible work that you do as fathers. Today, we celebrate you and all that you bring to our society,” he wrote in a Facebook post today.

He highlighted the love and dedication fathers show to their children, both biological and others. For him, this “is truly admirable.”

The statesman therefore entreated all dads to “continue to put our families first in everything that we do.”

“I must say that, on occasions such as today, we must use it, as we are celebrated or we celebrate ourselves, to strengthen our resilience in playing our role as fathers.

Congratulations for all you do to support your families and communities. Happy Father’s Day!,” he added.

Assin North campaign: One of Mahama’s convoys involved in accident, 1 dead and others injured

During a campaign visit to the Assin North constituency in the Central Region, a tragic road accident occurred, resulting in the death of a supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who was travelling with former President John Mahama.

Several other party supporters were also injured in the incident, which took place on Saturday.

In a heartfelt tweet, Mr. Mahama expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the sorrowful loss experienced by all those affected by the accident.

He further suspended his campaign for two hours to visit persons injured.

“I’ve had to suspend my campaign in Assin North for about 2hrs to visit injured sympathizers who were involved in an accident after our engagement at Dansame. Unfortunately, we lost one of our comrades who enthusiastically joined others in the programme. Our condolences to her family,” his tweet read.

Assin North electorates are preparing to go to the polls in 10 days to elect a new Member of Parliament.

Hence, all the major political parties have been trooping to the area in order to convince the electorates to vote for their representatives.

Before commencing their campaign for the by-election, the former president together with the NDC candidate, Gyakye Quayson, paid a courtesy to the Assin Breku Traditional Council.

Mahama throws support behind Gyakye Quayson at Assin North

Former President John Dramani Mahama has joined the ousted lawmaker, James Gyakye Quayson, today at Assin North Constituency to lend his support to Mr Quayson’s campaign leading up to the upcoming by-election.

Mahama expressed that his decision to support Gyakye Quayson stems from his commitment to pursuing justice and fostering development for the residents of the Assin North Constituency.

“This NPP administration has gone to indecent lengths to rob the people of Assin North of parliamentary representation. The reason? To gain an advantage in what has essentially been a hung Parliament.

“The James Quayson case will go down in the history of Ghanaian democracy as one of the most brazen manipulation of our judicial system ever.

“I firmly believe and trust the people of Assin North to right the wrong done to them and James Quayson by electing him once again as Member of Parliament for the constituency.

‘To the people of Assin North, I thank you for the continuous love and support you’ve shown James Quayson and the NDC, despite the last minute vote buying gimmicks being employed by the NPP,” he said.

The Electoral Commission has slated June 27, 2023, for a by-election to be held in the Assin North Constituency.

Security analyst warns against using Judiciary to hinder Mahama’s presidential ambition

A security policy expert, Anthony Acquaye, has cautioned that the judiciary’s handling of a case against former President John Dramani Mahama could potentially create chaos in the country if not approached with care.

The case, brought before the Supreme Court by Kenneth Kuranchie, challenges the former president’s constitutional right to seek re-election.

Mr Acquaye emphasized the need for cautious handling of such cases, stating that they serve as indicators that have the potential to disrupt a nation.

In a statement Acquaye highlighted the importance of carefully navigating through this case to avoid any destabilizing effects.

“It is important to stress that the early warning signs or indicators to throw a country into chaos is not far from us as a country.

“For this reason, I vehemently deem it important to use this medium to send a word of caution to all the security architectures in this country, including the judiciary, that it is eminent on their side to embrace the spirit of patriotism and put the peace and the stability of our dear country, Ghana, first in their forward decisions, and that any attempt to use the judiciary or legal approach to restrain or stop the former president John Dramani Mahama from contesting the 2024 general election will throw the country into chaos,” he said.

Anthony Acquaye is a security policy expert

The security policy expert added that while the role of the judiciary in the determination of such matters cannot be downplayed, it must be guided by recent disaffections it has received from the NDC.

He cited the most recent judgement by the Supreme Court that made the 2020 election of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament null and void.

“Let me emphasize that the judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring national security and its recent perception by the citizens as a biased institution is a clear warning sign that citizens may be forced to take the law into their own hands if it happens that the former president is restrained from contesting the 2024 general election by the Supreme Court.

“What is more dangerous in relation to this development is that in recent months, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in particular, has accused the judiciary of being biased because the party has lost a string of cases before the courts, including the most recent verdict on Hon James Gyakye Quayson, Member of Parliament for Assin North in the Central Region, who the NDC believe the government has manipulated the Supreme Court to order for his name to be removed from parliament,” he added.

Anthony Acquaye also stressed that he is greatly worried that there seems to be a trend where politicians think they can have their way to power using the judiciary.

ANY ATTEMPT TO USE THE JUDICIARY TO PREVENT THE FORMER PRESIDENT, JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA FROM CONTESTING THE 2024 GENERAL ELECTION WILL THROW THE COUNTRY INTO CHAOS ~ Security Analyst Warned.
    ……………………………………..

It is important to stress that, the early warning signs or indicators to throw a country into chaos is not far from us as a country. For this reason I vehemently deem it important to use this medium to send a word of caution to all the security architectures in this country including the judiciary that, it is eminent on their side to embrace the spirit of patriotism and put the peace and the stability of our dear country Ghana first in their forward decisions and that any attempt to use the judiciary or legal approach to restrain or stop the former president John Dramani Mahama from contesting the 2024 general election will throw the country into chaos.

Let me emphasize that, the judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring national security
and its recent perception by the citizens as biased institution is a clear warning sign that, citizens may be forced to take the law into their own hands if it happens that the former president is restrain from contesting the 2024 general election by the supreme court.

What is more dangerous in relation to this development is that, in recent months, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in particular has accused the judiciary of being biased because the party has lost a string of cases before the courts including the most recent verdict on Hon James Gyakye Quayson, member of parliament for Assin North in the Central region who, the NDC believe the government has manipulated the supreme court to order for his name to be removed from parliament.

Although judiciary role is paramount in helping to safeguard the security of the country, injustice delivery can throw the country into chaos. The ultimate responsibility to safeguard the peace of this country lies squarely at the feet of members of Ghana’s judiciary system who are entrusted by the law with the power to ensure effective justice delivery.

In fact, as a student of peace, I was taught of a number of approaches that can be use to ensure peace and among those approaches is the legal approach. It is also important to stress on the fact that, this same legal approach to peace can cause conflict or war if justice is denied.

I must say vehemently that, am really worried about this development in our body politics where politicians think they can have their way to power using the judiciary, most especially under a regime of governmednt beìng characterised by the realism sort of behaviour.

Witnessing the recent unanimous decision trend by the supreme court gives me a strong impression that anything can happen without the court considering the security implications of it’s decision.

I say with my strong analytical spectacle that Ghana must learn from the current state of Senegal.

Mahama will face Bawumia in 2024 election – Speaker predicts

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has predicted that both of Ghana’s major parties will run candidates from the northern part of the nation for the first time in the history of the Fourth Republic.

Bagbin made this projection during a courtesy call on the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunutu Jewu Soale, at his residence in Damongo.

Addressing the Overlord and his subjects, the Speaker emphasized that it is now the time for development in the northern region and urged the people to prepare themselves accordingly.

“This is the time that the two main parties in Ghana are both deciding that the flagbearers will be our sons from the North. What I plead with all of you is for us to accept our differences and see how we can come together to prepare to receive the development that is coming our way.”

“So the legacy projects we will do so be prepared to receive them when we bring them, multiply them and make sure that generations unborn will benefit from that,” he stated.

Bagbin also reiterated his opposition to the practice of LGBTQI+ in Ghana, reaffirming the unanimous stance of Ghana’s Parliament against it.

As the presiding officer of the Ghanaian Parliament, Bagbin firmly declared that LGBTQI+ activities will never be sanctioned in the country.

“Once I preside over the parliament of Ghana, this LGBTQI will never be sanctioned in Ghana,” he added.

  • NDC is imperfect but better than “reckless” NPP – Mahama

NDC is imperfect but better than “reckless” NPP – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has refuted claims that the opposition NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are similar.

In Mr Mahama’s view, the NDC cannot be reckless, contemptuous and wasteful as the NPP.

“We have been in power, and our record is there for all to see. We do not claim perfection, but we in the NDC can never be like the NPP. We simply cannot be and are not as reckless and contemptuous of the people of Ghana as the NPP has been. We have never been and will not be as wasteful, ostentatious, and as imprudent as the NPP has been.”

Speaking in an address at the NDC’s European Chapters Conference in Amsterdam, Holland over the weekend, Mr Mahama said the NDC has no intention of taking the mandate of Ghanaians for granted if the party wins the 2024 election.

“We have no intention of taking the mandate of the people of Ghana for granted. We know we are going against an incumbent government that has proven that it is prepared to shed the blood of its citizens to hang on to power, as they amply showed at the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the 2020 elections. And then there is an Electoral Commission whose neutrality in this electoral contest is questionable.

“Our work is therefore cut out for us. We must get off our marks immediately and convince Ghanaians that we are prepared to govern in addition to our superior record to that of the NPP.”

Below are details of the speech by Mr Mahama

    General Secretary Fifi Kwetey,

Director of International Relations Alex Segbefia,

Chairpersons of our various NDC EU Chapters, Comrades,

    Ladies and gentlemen,

    Good afternoon.

Let me first thank you all, both the Chapter and Branch executives and members from our various EU countries, for making the sacrifice and time to gather here in Amsterdam for three days to discuss the future of our party, the NDC, and how we can contribute towards an emphatic victory in December 2024.

You have rescheduled this conference twice because of other competing events, including the just-ended May 13 Presidential Primaries. I appreciate your patience with me, especially because of your determination that I must be personally present with you.

We were close to rescheduling this session once more because of the impending Assin North by-election. But it is good we decided to come and push ahead with this event, as this is also a significant gathering for strategising towards victory in the polls of 2024.

Comrades, I bring you greetings from your compatriots in Ghana, whom I had the privilege, yet again, to visit and interact with across all 276 constituencies during the primaries.

That exercise has contributed to re-invigorating our executives and members at the grassroots. It allowed us to take our message to them and the people in their constituencies, reminding them that the National Democratic Congress remains the political party to trust when it comes to the total development and welfare of the citizens of Ghana.

It is, therefore, our duty to rededicate ourselves to work with absolute commitment in our branches to secure the maximum votes to guarantee an emphatic victory in 2024. I want to repeat that we must go to the polls on December 07, 2024, with our referee. That referee will be our DILIGENCE, PREPAREDNESS and WINNING the election EMPHATICALLY.

Our 2020 election comeback, raising the number of our seats from 106 to 137 and increasing our votes by almost 1.4 million, resulted from the dedication and hard work of all of us and the support of the people of Ghana.

Ghanaians have seen the difference and believe in our message, which in 2020 was conveyed in our People’s Manifesto.

Comrades, we did not become the majority party in Parliament. We were also not declared winners of the 2020 presidential elections because we left some loose ends untied in a bizarre election amidst the COVID restrictions and the economic meltdown. That is why in 2024, our win must be emphatic.

As leader and flagbearer, I offer my firm PLEDGE and assurance. I will work with the party’s leadership, represented here by the General Secretary, to build a formidable team and deploy strategies and mechanisms to ensure that we protect the votes of the teeming mass of Ghanaians. These Ghanaians are yearning to be freed from the shackles of poverty and hardship inflicted by the reckless Akufo Addo and Bawumia administrations. Most Ghanaians are ready to work with us to build the Ghana we all want together.

When I spoke at the commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the June 4th uprising in Hohoe on Sunday, I likened the 2024 elections to a peaceful and democratic revolution which will free our country and our people from the clutches of misrule from a mediocre, reckless, and incompetent government.

What we are gathered here to do is a declaration of intent by those of you in the diaspora to join the broad mass of Ghanaians in the collective push to dislodge this clueless administration through a peaceful, free, and fair election in 2024. This is an absolute national imperative, and we cannot and must not fail the people of Ghana.

It has been seven years of corruption, waste, arrogance, nepotism, abuse of office, human rights violations, and economic mismanagement. Seven years of reckless mismanagement of the economy has rendered our people broken and struggling to survive from one day to the next.

The Ghanaian economy is now classified among the worst managed in the world. We are currently in the same basket as the likes of Sri Lanka.

Ghana, our beloved country? Nkrumah’s Ghana?

Inflation is at record highs – impacting the prices of essential goods and services and escalating an already severe cost of living crisis. Our currency, the Ghana Cedi, has suffered one of its steepest declines in decades. This has earned the Cedi the depressing accolade, at one point, as the worst-performing currency in the world.

Businesses are stressed and being pushed to the brink, with quite a number left with no choice but to fold up or relocate to neighbouring countries. The Bank of Ghana has exacerbated the problem. It has blatantly breached its financial threshold, printing over 40 billion Ghana cedis to finance the government’s budget deficit.

In the last two years, we have suffered downgrade after downgrade to junk status by all the international credit rating agencies, and we have finally defaulted on our domestic and external debt repayment. The unilateral, insensitive debt restructuring programme has seen over GHS 80 billion lent by millions of Ghanaians to the government by purchasing bonds expropriated.

This has caused severe dislocation in the livelihoods of many pensioners and middle-class Ghanaian families. It has led to a depressing sight of aged pensioners picketing at the Ministry of Finance to demand their money. Local businesses, especially contractors and other government service providers are owed tens of billions of Ghana cedis, whose value continues to dwindle following the government’s inability or unwillingness to pay.

Government can also not meet all statutory payments, and many of the earmarked funds are in arrears. Even the most fundamental obligations, such as providing textbooks to primary schools or ensuring proper and consistent feeding of basic and senior high school students, have become daunting. The net effect of all these harrowing developments has been that Ghanaians are enduring economic suffering on an unprecedented scale.

I am certain that you are all too familiar with the precise narrative I have just rendered for those of you in the diaspora on whom millions of your relatives and compatriots back home depend for sustenance through remittances. All this would have been entirely avoidable if this government had heeded sound counsel from us in the opposition and other notable voices in civil society and academia and acted timeously.

The deliberate concealment of the actual situation through creative accounting and under-declaration of figures has combined with excessive and wasteful expenditure to hasten the inevitable catastrophe we are witnessing today.

Ultimately, too little was done too late, as our economy had so deteriorated that an IMF programme could only be secured by accepting the harshest conditionalities. To obtain an IMF programme, Ghanaians have paid a disproportionate price. Domestic bondholders have been given severe and painful haircuts and will be deprived of substantial interest due to them in 2023.

The consequences of these haircuts are grave for the financial sector. The financial health of Ghanaian banks has eroded and will undermine the financial sector’s performance with attendant job losses.

Insurance companies and pension funds invested in government bonds will also suffer, just as individuals who depend on pension payments for survival will suffer.

In addition to this already hostile economic environment, multiple taxes have been slapped on Ghanaians in the last two years alone. Over 23 other tax measures will make life even more unbearable for our people. Steep increases in the cost of utilities are increasing the burden on businesses and individuals.

Import duties and excise duties have shot through the roof. No wonder the Tema and Takoradi Ports have lost volumes while the Togo and Benin ports continue to be busy and receiving goods that should have come through our ports.

Ladies and gentlemen, one of the burning topics for discussion in Ghana today is the rate at which we are losing our (health) professionals, trained at great expense, to other countries.

I sympathise with the Ghanaian youth! Their feeling of despair and hopelessness is unprecedented in our history. They are now looking for the slightest opportunity to leave our shores in search of greener pastures.

The question we should ask ourselves is, how will we bring back HOPE in the Ghanaians in the face of their daily challenges? As the most viable alternative, we in the NDC have demonstrated the capacity to rise to the occasion by our record in government. In the past, we have reset our country’s trajectory and returned it to an appreciable state of health. We have a duty to our country to lead the charge for change again and bring relief to the long-suffering people of Ghana.

Comrades, it would be presumptuous to think that this will come quickly or that the abysmal depths to which the NPP has sunk governance guarantees us automatic victory at the polls. We must first earn the trust of the Ghanaian people.

A significant section of voters has grown sceptical and are weary of our democracy and its benefits because of unmet expectations and the spectacular failure of this government.

I urge you all to remember, through our actions and the policy platforms to canvass, demonstrate the difference between our service in government and the nightmarish example the NPP has set.

We have been in power, and our record is there for all to see. We do not claim perfection, but we in the NDC can never be like the NPP. We simply cannot be and are not as reckless and contemptuous of the people of Ghana as the NPP has been. We have never been and will not be as wasteful, ostentatious, and as imprudent as the NPP has been.

We have committed to operating a lean government that avoids the NPP’s extravagance and gets the job done more efficiently. Nothing in our historical record compares to the level of economic mismanagement that the NPP has superintended.

The NDC believes in substantive offerings, carefully considered, and curated to stand the test of time while comprehensively resolving some of our most complex problems.

We have no intention of taking the mandate of the people of Ghana for granted.

Our work is therefore cut out for us. We must get off our marks immediately and convince Ghanaians that we are prepared to govern in addition to our superior record to that of the NPP.

The first step towards doing that is proving that we can manage our internal affairs, which is why this European Conference is significant. It offers a platform for sharing unique insights into better organisational strategies and innovative approaches to mobilising the people of Ghana for a resounding victory in 2024.

The NDC profoundly values your contributions towards the running of the party and the brilliant perspectives you bring to the table on essential governance matters. The party also acknowledges your concerns about participation in elections and governance.

Of particular concern to you have been the constitutional impediments to persons holding dual citizenship and their occupation of some government positions in Ghana. Only a few weeks ago, we suffered what we consider grave injustice when our Member of Parliament for Assin North was thrown out of Parliament by the Supreme Court on grounds we find entirely unsatisfactory.

I have previously indicated that one of the things I will do when elected President in 2024 would be to fast-track the clarification of the constitutional provision on allegiance that bars our dual citizens from holding some offices in Ghana. I call on Parliament to do the needful so that Ghana can benefit fully from the expertise that our citizens have garnered during their sojourn abroad.

Another matter which I know concerns you and on which I would like to offer some clarity concerning the NDC’s position is ROPAA. We in the NDC have not been opposed to ROPAA in principle. We have kicked against the potential for selective and inequitable implementation that lends itself to exploitation by the incumbent party and to the unfair detriment of opposition parties.

We have said that if ROPAA is ever to be implemented, it should be implemented for every Ghanaian living everywhere. As far as we are concerned, a Ghanaian living in Europe should not have a greater right to vote than one living in Asia or Africa.

We in the NDC will not countenance an attempt or conspiracy between the NPP and the Electoral Commission to implement a lopsided ROPAA favouring the NPP. When we see that a level playing field will be created for all Ghanaians anywhere on earth to have the right to vote, we will be more than willing to support such a move.

We continue to value your contributions to the development of Ghana even as life’s vicissitudes have ensured that you reside in far and distant lands to either ply your trade and earn a living or pursue some form of personal development.

I am confident that the deliberations, which started yesterday, will ultimately inure to the benefit of the NDC and provide further impetus to our preparations to salvage the fortunes of our country, which are presently in great peril. We back at home are doing our bit as well and strengthening the cooperation between the national and external branches of the party.

Comrades, our meeting today, June 10, coincides with the 33rd anniversary of the formation of our great party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Congratulations to the founding fathers and mothers of our party and to us all who continue to build and hold the party aloft across the almost 40,000 branches.

We acknowledge all our lost comrades in the struggle, and especially our Founder, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd.), former President Professor John Evans Atta Mills and former Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur.

Later this month, the 29th, is the memorial of the late Amissah-Arthur, and we will be joining the family at an event to remember his work and contributions to building a Better Ghana.

On July 24th, we will celebrate the memory of the late Asomdwehene, as we always do, and I intend on that day as part of the commemoration to remind Ghanaians of his contribution to Ghana in various forms and how we can learn from him to step-up the development of the country, in the wake of the depths the NPP has sunk us.

Together with his family, the people of Keta and Anlo and the larger NDC family, we must, and I will host a gathering in November to celebrate the memory of our late Founder, Jerry Rawlings, in his native Keta.

I thank you for your kind attention.

I wish everyone a successful congress.

God bless the NDC, and God bless our homeland Ghana.

I thank you for your kind attention.

June 4 events should encourage leaders to work towards a better Ghana – Mahama

For a better future for Ghana, John Mahama has implored leaders to take inspiration from the events of June 4.

In a Facebook post on Sunday June 4, 2023, the former President stated that it is regrettable that the fight for justice and accountability resulted in the loss of lives.

“Forty-four years ago today, our nation was gripped by a conflagration- triggered by a fight for justice and accountability. Regrettably, lives were lost.

“We honour the memory of all who were involved in the catastrophic events of June 4, 1979. Their sacrifices paved the way for the democracy and constitutional governance we enjoy today,” M. Mahama stated.

He continued: “June 4 birthed the principles of probity and accountability. The events of that uprising must spur those of us in positions of leadership today to work selflessly and tirelessly towards a brighter future for Ghana and uphold the legacy of those who came before us.

“Let us commemorate this important day with utmost respect and gratitude.”

Help our young people see a much brighter future – Mahama appeals to Korea

Former President John Dramani Mahama wants enormous investment for Ghanaian youth who are keen on making strides in the business industry.

As a keynote speaker at the just-ended Korea-African Business Summit in Seoul, Mr Mahama noted the relevance of Korea in the development of Ghanaian youths.

He said to elevate the youth out of the dire unemployment situation in the country, “Korea can help us nudge our young innovators and entrepreneurs to realize their dreams.”

“Our young people must see a much brighter future ahead, and they are willing to put in the shift to make it a reality,” he stressed.

The former president boasted of the talent and skills possessed by the Ghanaian youths, adding that “despite the lamentable situation, come through with impressive feats and achievements.”

He therefore charged Ghanaian and international leaders to “unlock and unleash” the untapped potential.

Organised by the Korea- African Foundation, the two day summit coincided with the 2023 commemoration of Africa Day.

Ghana’s unemployment situation is a significant concern for the country. Like many other nations, Ghana faces challenges in providing adequate employment opportunities for its growing population, particularly among the youth.

The unemployment rate in Ghana has been fluctuating over the years.

1.76 million persons were unemployed in the third quarter of 2022 per The Ghana Statistical Service’s (GSS) 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) Third Quarter Labour Statistics.

“Ghana-branded ambulance was merely a demonstration model ” – Dubai car dealer responds

S K Motors, an automotive dealership located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has officially responded to the recent controversy surrounding the sale of Ghanaian ambulances.

This comes shortly after the dealership removed a photo of a Government of Ghana-branded ambulance from its Facebook page.

The deletion came in the wake of a viral video in which the said ambulance was sighted at the premises of the dealership along with other vehicles up for sale.

The dealership in a May 30, 2023 statement on Facebook referenced an earlier post by Stan Dogbe, an aide to former president Mahama, before stating facts from their side.

“Concerning the viral video of an ambulance in our parking yard, we deeply regret that someone took and circulated this video without our consent. It is disheartening to know that it may mislead the people of Ghana and tarnish the image of both the Government of Ghana and our company, S K Motors.

“Please understand that the ambulance featured in the video is a part of a World Bank-funded consignment intended to enhance emergency medical services in Ghana,” the statement further clarified.

“It was never meant for public purchase and was merely a demonstration model. We sincerely apologize for any confusion caused and want to assure you that we remain steadfast in upholding ethical practices,” it stressed.

I never insulted you – Mahama to Nana Akomea

Former president John Dramani Mahama has refuted the accusation made by Nana Akomea, the managing director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), that he insulted him.

In a tweet, Mahama clarified that he did not use any insulting language towards Akomea.

However, he stated that he believes Akomea’s decision to provide misleading information about ex-gratia payments was politically motivated.

“My friend Nana Akomea. I did not insult you. I know you know the difference between a lump sum ex-gratia payment and a monthly pension. Why you chose to misinform the public was because of politics,” Mahama wrote.

The former president’s comments come after the managing director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea on Saturday criticised same for insulting his critics.

The former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South in a statement copied to GhanaWeb admonished Mahama to stop insulting people if he wants to be president again.

“Even if President Mahama disagrees with me, I am sad that he chose to lace his disagreement with insults to my person, by implying politics had caused me to lose my ‘fine mind’.

“The last time other citizens commented on these same sentiments of President Mahama, he met them with similar insults, calling them ‘silly’.

“I urge President Mahama, that if he wants to be President of Ghana again, he should refrain from insulting citizens. I assure him I am still his friend and I still have a fine mind,” parts of the statement read.

Nana Akomea, last week in a radio interview asked the former president to forego his ex-gratia entitlements to set an example for his readiness to scrap the benefits should he assume office in 2025.

In a rebuttal, the former president tweeted that he was concerned about what politics could do to a fine mind like Nana Akomea.

“My friend Nana Akomea. Really sad what politics can do to a fine mind! I don’t take ex-gratia. I receive a monthly pension,” he tweeted.

Akufo-Addo jabs Mahama, “naysayers” after commissioning Elmina Fishing Harbour

During the commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Harbour on Friday, May 26, 2023, President Akufo-Addo used the occasion to subtly criticize former President John Dramani Mahama.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the successful completion of the Elmina Fishing Port while subtly rebuking Mahama’s previous skeptical comments.

Speaking to the gathered crowd in Elmina, he expressed gratitude to the people for entrusting his government with the task of delivering the project. He recalled the groundbreaking ceremony that took place on August 20, 2020, and thanked the residents for disregarding negative voices.

In particular, he made reference to Mahama’s visit to Elmina four months later, where he disparagingly referred to the project as a “sakawa fishing harbor” and asserted that it would never come to fruition.

“I thank the people of Elmina for trusting the Akufo-Addo government to deliver this project, whose sod I cut on 20th August 2020, and I thank them for not listening to the naysayers. I remember that, after cutting the sod, the former President, John Dramani Mahama, the perennial NDC presidential candidate, came to Elmina four (4) months later, in December, and described the fishing harbour as ‘a sakawa fishing harbour’. He was emphatic in his statements that the construction of the Elmina Harbour would never materialise,” the president said.

With a touch of satisfaction, President Akufo-Addo reminded everyone that Mahama is not God, and he expressed joy that both Mahama and the naysayers are alive to witness the commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Port.

“It is just as well that he is not God, and I am equally happy that he, together with all the naysayers, are alive today to see President Akufo-Addo commissioning the Elmina Fishing Port,” he stated.

The president acknowledged the significance of the Elmina Fishing Port, which now joins the existing fishing ports in Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi. He also mentioned the ongoing works on the Jamestown Fishing Port, which, once completed, will bring the total number of fishing ports in the country to four.

President Akufo-Addo assured the audience that his government remains committed to supporting the growth of the fishing industry by pursuing programs and initiatives that enhance its development.

The commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Harbour marks a major milestone in Ghana’s fishing sector.

Judges are excluded from taking ex-gratia – Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Chief Justice nominee, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has indicated that the payment of ex-gratia to former government officials does not include those in the Judiciary.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, May 26, 2023, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo explained that it is the doing of the law to ensure the independence of the Judiciary.

“We continue in office, we don’t leave office until you retire. We don’t have a cycle, and therefore, the discussion of ex-gratia is not applicable to us.

“This specific provision, where our names [judges] are mentioned, how our salaries are set under Article 71, it’s a committee, a presidential committee that does that work. And the framers of the Constitution thought that, that was the appropriate thing to keep us independent and we are not the only persons subject to it. It’s an entrenched provision and can only be changed by a very elaborate position.

“It’s an entrenched provision and can only be changed by a very elaborate position,” she however added.

Her submission on ex-gratia comes at a time when some Ghanaians have strengthened their calls for the removal of ex-gratia as Ghana battles an economic crisis.

Wading into the conversation, former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to cease the payment of ex-gratia to former government officers (Article 71 holders) in his next government.

Speaking at the University of Development Studies, Tamale on Monday, May 15, he asked Ghanaians to hold him to his promise.

“I am committed to operating an effective government with not more than sixty (60) ministers.

“These ministers together with other appointees of the government will not be entitled to ex-gratia payments after their tenure, as they will commit to that undertaking even before the necessary constitutional amendments, including a review of the controversial Article 71.”

But some citizens have come against the former statesman. They claim he has been a beneficiary of the ex-gratia payment regime.

According to former President Mahama, he has never received ex-gratia. He clarified that he receives monthly pension.

“My friend Nana Akomea. Really sad what politics can do to a fine mind! I don’t take ex-gratia. I receive a monthly pension,” he wrote on Twitter today.

  • NDC performed well despite vote-buying by NPP in Kumawu by-election – Mahama

NDC performed well despite vote-buying by NPP in Kumawu by-election – Mahama

Former president and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) John Mahama has stated that the NDC performed very well despite vote-buying by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the Kumawu Constituency by-election.

He noted that a significant increase in the number of votes obtained by the NDC in the by-election, taking into consideration votes obtained in the 2020 parliamentary election, points to how well the performance of the NDC has improved.

He also expressed gratitude to the people of Kumawu for the hospitality shown to him when he went there to campaign and commended them for being peaceful before, during and after the elections.

“Congratulations to the people of Kumawu for the peaceful conduct of Tuesday’s parliamentary by-election.

Of course, I cannot forget the warmth of the people and the enthusiasm demonstrated when I led a delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to campaign for our candidate, Kwasi Amankwah. I am very grateful.

That enthusiasm was aptly demonstrated in the increased number of votes our candidate garnered in the poll – 1,284 actual votes representing an increase of 52.6% over our 2020 performance.

That is significant, especially in the face of the deliberate vote buying undertaken by the NPP, even at the polling stations, and the deceit of the people with asphalt roads, and the fact that the constituency has historically been an NPP stronghold,” he said in a statement after the election.

The by-election held on May 23, 2023, was won by the NPP candidate Ernest Yaw Anim with over 70% of the valid votes cast.

Read the full statement of John Mahama below:

Congratulations to the people of Kumawu for the peaceful conduct of Tuesday’s parliamentary by-election.

That is significant, especially in the face of the deliberate vote buying undertaken by the NPP, even at the polling stations and the deceit of the people with asphalt roads, and the fact that the constituency has historically been an NPP stronghold.

The election result is a great sign from the good people of Kumawu.

Judging from the results, the ruling NPP has clearly recorded a significant reduction in the overall votes in their stronghold, and for me, that is a great sign from the good people of Kumawu.

We may not have succeeded in flipping the seat, but I am proud that, as a collective, spearheaded by our National Chairman and General Secretary, we have had the opportunity to test our reviewed electoral operational procedures, including monitoring, party agent selection and training, collation, and transmission of results.

I would want to congratulate the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and his men and women for their assistance in ensuring the peaceful conduct of the polls. The conduct of the police personnel gives us confidence for the future that they will continue to bear true allegiance to the state and not to any political party.

To the Electoral Commission, you are once again reminded that a credible election depends as much on the persons you recruit and appoint as presiding and other officers as much as it depends on the collaboration with the agents and representatives of the political parties.

Many of the infractions observed should not have occurred. Our monitoring teams that ensured the early detection of these infractions would be looking forward to engaging further to ensure that these issues are definitely dealt with, and corrective measures are taken ahead of any other election.

Thank you to the team from the branches, constituency, region, national, and the many selfless members of our party who were in Kumawu to assist in various ways towards the improved outing in this by-election.

Congratulations, Kwasi Amankwah. You can count on the party for the utmost support to enhance the gains of the NDC in the main election in 2024.

All in all, Kumawu has had positive outcomes for us, and we must apply lessons learned speedily even as we head towards the pending Assin North by-election.

Finally, I extend my congratulations to the Member of Parliament-elect Ernest Ayim.

  • Kojo Bonsu reveals ‘real’ reason behind competing against Mahama in NDC presidential race

Kojo Bonsu reveals ‘real’ reason behind competing against Mahama in NDC presidential race

Former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, who was unsuccessful in his quest to become the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer for the 2024 elections has revealed that he never stood a chance in the presidential race.

Mr Bonsu went up against former President John Dramani Mahama in the party’s primaries held on May 13, 2023.

Ahead of the elections, the former president was tipped as the winning candidate but this did not persuade Mr Bonsu from throwing in the towel.

Although Dr Kwabena Duffuor withdrew from the race due to some alleged inconsistences with the voters register, Mr Bonsu did not back down despite corroborating his claims.

After the elections, Mr Bonsu has finally admitted to the fact that he never considered himself a worthy opponent to Mr Mahama to begin with.

“To be honest, I didn’t believe I could beat former President Mahama from the start,” he said on Citi TV’s Face to Face.

But he quickly added that “I was hoping that maybe people would change their minds and vote for me.”

Over 356,000 delegates participated in the party’s primaries held in a total of 420 voting centres across the country.

After counting was done, Mr Mahama secured 297,603 of the votes cast, representing 98.9% to beat Kojo Bonsu, who garnered 1,381 votes, representing 1.1%.

Mr Bonsu in his interaction revealed why he decided to contest despite knowing the odds were not in his favor.

According to him, he had identified a challenge with Mr Mahama’s campaign strategy, and the only way for the former president to work on that deficiency was for him to contest.

“We would not have known that there are problems down there because there are areas that he [Mahama] wouldn’t have visited. But because of these primaries, he [Mr. Mahama] went everywhere. Normally, he would only focus on certain regions, but now he has been everywhere.”

The former Kumasi Mayor also registered his displeasure with Dr Duffuor over his decision to file an injunction against the party’s primaries.

He said: “I did agree with him on the photo album, but I didn’t think he should have taken the matter to court. It was an internal issue that we could have resolved internally. It wasn’t a serious problem.”

“He could have gone to court earlier, but waiting until the last minute gives the impression that you have ulterior motives to disrupt many things,” Mr Bonsu added.

Dr Duffuor eventually withdrew the injunction case from the court.

Meanwhile, Mr Bonsu has assured of his commitment to supporting the party at all levels to ensure it emerges victorious in the next polls.

Mahama in Kumawu ahead of by-election on Tuesday

John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is set to join the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, in the Sekyere Kumawu constituency today to intensify their campaign efforts leading up to the Kumawu by-election on May 23, 2023.

The NDC has been actively campaigning in the constituency, with Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Organizer Joseph Yamin, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and other party executives tirelessly working day and night. Their aim is to capture the Kumawu Parliamentary seat from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has held it since 1992.

In an interview with GHone news, National Organizer Joseph Yammin expressed confidence in the party’s chosen candidate, stating that they have selected a strong contender who appeals to voters across all political affiliations.

The NDC is determined to secure victory in the upcoming by-election and strengthen their position in the constituency.

“Our candidate is a local man who is a direct relative of the late Philip Basoa. After campaigning with him in the constituency I’m confident we will win the seat.”

He added, “The NPP achievements in the Sekyere Kumawu district in the last 6-7 years is the overnight construction of roads to buy votes in the by-election. They have nothing to show in the district. We were building a district hospital for the district which was about 70% complete, they have abandoned the project. We gave Kumawu potable drinking water for the first time. What can the NPP show in the constituency as Government in power for Kumawu?” he asked.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Party Bernard Antwi Boasiako Boasiako also known as Wontumi has for the past 7 days relocated to the constituency with his team to campaign in the constituency.

He has been moving from house to house to ensure his party wins the election.

National Chairman of the party Stephen Ntim, National Organizer Nana Boakye, Chief of Staff Fremah Opare, Kennedy Agyapong among others are some big wigs of the party that joined the Wontumi-led campaign team in the constituency to campaign for the party.

Minister of Roads and Highways Kwasi Amoako Attah who inspected overnight road construction work in the constituency also denied constructing roads overnight to canvas for votes ahead of the election.

He explained the roads project was influenced by the late member of Parliament Philip Atta Basoah.

“We are not constructing Kumawu district roads because of the by-election. It was part of the project we were doing in Kwabere East constituency. It is rather unfortunate that the project started three days after the demise of the MP. We are constructing the project to honor him for his work for the party and his constituency,” the Minister stated.

  • Mahama spurs hope to restoring UniBank, Heritage Bank, GN Bank and others

Mahama spurs hope to restoring UniBank, Heritage Bank, GN Bank and others

There is a possibility that a number of financial institutions who suffered shutdown during the banking sector-cleanup exercise that occurred between 2017 and 2020 may be able to bounce back.

This is so because 2024 flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has pledged to restore the licences of financial businesses who were run out of business unjustifiably should he win the next poll.

Speaking at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale today, May 15, 2023 to formally accept his role as flagbearer, the former president said: “We will restore indigenous Ghanaian investments in the finance and banking sector and we will create a tier banking system that will serve various segments of the market.”

“We will give the opportunity to experience banking hands who were laid off needlessly to secure their careers once more and move away from the menial jobs that they were compelled to take.

“As far as practicable, the banking licenses that were unjustly canceled by this government will be restored,” he added.

The banking crisis in Ghana led to the revocation of the licenses of more than 400
financial institutions that were licensed under Act, 2016 (Act 930) by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The Bank of Ghana conducted an Asset Quality Review of banks in 2015 and 2016, which identified several indigenous banks facing significant challenges. These challenges included high levels of non-performing loans, undercapitalization, and weak corporate governance.

To address these issues, the Bank of Ghana implemented interventions, resulting in the merger of five banks: BEIGE, Sovereign, Construction, uniBank (owned by former Finance Minister Kwabena Duffuor), and Royal Bank. This merger led to the formation of a new entity known as Consolidated Bank of Ghana.

Also more than twenty financial institutions including UT Bank which was owned by Prince Kofi Amoabeng, had their licenses being revoked and given to a receivership.

Following the recapitalization of the banks and a new capital requirement, the number of banks in the country reduced from thirty-six to twenty-three.

Ghana invested more than twelve billion Ghana cedis for this clean-up exercise in the banking sector.

In March 2021, Parliament received petitions from Prince Kofi Amoabeng and Dr Kwabena Duffuor, owners of the UT Bank and uniBank respectively.

The two asked Parliament to investigate the conduct of the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Stock Exchange in revoking the licenses of their financial institutions.

On March 23, 2021, the Speaker referred to petitions to a seven-member committee of Parliament to investigate and report to the House. The Bank of Ghana was invited over the matter but declined the invitation to appear before the House.

The BoG explained that its decision was taken according to its statutory powers under the Banks and Specialised Deposit Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930). It added that the probe “flies in the face of the Constitution.”

With the promise to investigate what happened five years ago, Ghana may see an increase in the number of financial institutions.

According to Mr Mahama, among his many objectives is to “promote robust, local participation in our banking and financial, telecommunication, tourism, mining and agric and manufacturing sectors to grow our economy and create sustainable employment for our youths.”

  • Mahama leads NDC into 2024 elections with a resounding victory of 98.9%

Mahama leads NDC into 2024 elections with a resounding victory of 98.9%

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) delegates have once more chosen former president John Mahama to lead the party into the 2024 presidential election.

Certified results by the Electoral Commission (EC) show Mr Mahama polled an overwhelming 297,603 votes representing 98.9% of the total valid votes cast at the end of the NDC primaries on Saturday.

His closest contender, the former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu, polled a paltry 3,181  representing 1.1%.

The other contender in the NDC flagbearership race, former Finance Minister in the Mills regime, Kwabena Duffour, pulled out on Friday.

This is the fourth time John Mahama will be leading the NDC into an election.

Then Vice President John Mahama who took over from President John Evans Mills when the latter died while in office in July 2012, went on to win the election later that year.

As an incumbent, he first lost to then New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016, becoming the first President to serve only one full term.

He won the flagbearership race in February 2019 with an overwhelming endorsement of 95% votes to represent the NDC in the 2020 election but he lost to incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo who was declared the winner of the Dec. 7, vote with 51.59%, ahead of the DNC candidate who received 47.37%.

Mr Mahama challenged the outcome at the Supreme Court, arguing that Akufo-Addo’s votes in some polling stations were padded, pushing him above the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff.

    He lost the court challenge.

Once again, delegates of the opposition party in a decisive outcome in 2019 gave the former President the go-ahead to lead the party as its flagbearer into the 2020 polls. Once again he lost.

In many recent interviews, Mr Mahama has said that with the benefit of hindsight, he has realised his mistakes and wants another opportunity to better lead the country.

Mr Mahama told journalists after casting his vote on Saturday that, “his [Duffour’s] withdrawal at the last minute does not change anything, I just voted, there are many delegates going to vote, the result will still be what it is and I expect it to be a landslide.”

He continued, “There is no disunity in the party, absolutely not. One contender was dissatisfied with the process, it doesn’t mean there is disunity in the party.

“NDC is a family and all of them are part of that family, as long as they are willing to come together and let us work toward 2024 I don’t think there is any problem, the party will make overtures.”

On Friday, May 12, Dr Kwabena Duffour formally pulled out from the NDC flagbearership contest.

Addressing a presser, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana stated that his decision was based on his grievances with the processes, especially the voters register, which he thought did not guarantee free and fair elections.

He explained that the exercise was marred by a lot of irregularities; a situation that was not resolved by the leadership of the party.

Last four years, Kojo Bonsu similarly pulled out during the race.

  • Mahama elected NDC flagbearer for 2024 presidential elections

Mahama elected NDC flagbearer for 2024 presidential elections

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected former President John Dramani Mahama to run on the ticket of the party in the 2024 general elections.

Mr John Mahama secured 297,603 of the votes cast representing 98.9% to beat his only contender, former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, who garnered 1,381 votes.

Over 356,000 delegates participated in the party’s primaries held in a total of 420 voting centers across the country on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

275 constituencies took part in the presidential elections while 259 constituencies partook in the parliamentary elections.

Mr Kojo Bonsu has congratulated Mr Mahama over his landslide victory. According to him, this was done via phone call.

In a Facebook post, Mr Bonsu pledged his continuous support for the party and to ensure the NDC wins the 2024 elections.

“I have placed a call to H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him for the landslide victory. Just as I’ve indicated throughout my campaign, regardless of the outcome of this election I’ll continue to serve the NDC party,” he said in a Facebook post.

In 2019, Mr Mahama, who first served as Vice President under the late John Evans Atta Mills from 2009 to 2012 and then President from 2013 to 2016, was elected as flagbearer to lead the party into the 2020 polls after failing to win the 2016 general elections.

Mr Mahama secured an overwhelming 213,487 votes representing 95.23 percent of the total valid votes cast with the other six contenders managing about 4 percent.

Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Professional Studies; Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, then Member of Parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo, Mr Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, Goosie Tanoh, former Trades and Industry Minister, Ekwow Spio Garbrah, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester Mensah and Nurudeen Iddrisu were the other contenders.

Mr Mahama’s name is recorded in history books as the first former president in Ghana to run for presidency. Mr Mahama during the 2020 elections failed to bring the NDC from opposition.

President Akufo-Addo was declared the winner with 51.59%, ahead of the former president who received 47.37%.

He sent the matter to the Supreme Court but the apex court threw out the case.

As he prepares for the 2024 general elections, Mr Mahama has pledged to do among other things, erase payment of ex-gratia, strengthen the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and go after corrupt government officials and individuals in the country.

Should Mr Mahama emerge winner in the 2024 general elections, he would become the first-ever former President to run for presidency and emerge victorious.

As it stands now, it is unknown whom Mr Mahama will compete against from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as they are yet to elect their flagbearer.

Mahama will secure 99.9% of the votes cast in presidential race – Joshua Alabi

Professor Joshua Alabi, the campaign manager of John Mahama, expressed strong confidence in his candidate’s victory in the NDC flagbearership contest, predicting an overwhelming margin.

He stated that John Mahama would emerge victorious with an impressive 99.9% of the total valid votes cast.

Professor Alabi shared these remarks during a short visit to the voting center at Zenith University College, where the ongoing La Dadekotopon Constituency primaries of the NDC are taking place.

“My expectation is for His Excellency John Mahama to make above what he made in the previous election; which is above 85%, closing to 99.9%”, he said.

The former President is going up against a former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu.

Mr Bonsu has expressed optimism in winning the race. However, he has entreated the rank and file of the party to accept the outcome of the elections whichever way it goes.

  • Your suffering under Akufo-Addo supersedes that of mine – Mahama to public

Your suffering under Akufo-Addo supersedes that of mine – Mahama to public

Former President John Dramani Mahama has admitted that under his governance in 2016, some Ghanaians were subjected to immense suffering.

However, according to the NDC presidential aspirant, what was experienced in the past seven years can in no way be compared to the hardship currently being experienced under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

According to him, the economic challenges have worsened and the standard of living has significantly dropped.

Addressing party faithful in the Upper West Region, Mr Mahama said “In 2016 all the lies they told and all the propaganda they told, Ghanaians can now see. All the preaching that we were sitting on money and yet we are hungry and the claims that Ghanaians were suffering, Ghanaians are now suffering more than they were in 2016.

“Any work that anyone does, you hardly get profit. I can beat my chest and say in 2016 our lives were far better than we are today,” Mr Mahama added.

Mr Mahama hopes to return to his previous position as president come 2025 after the 2024 general elections.

  • It’s unfair leadership supports Mahama but I’m not discouraged – Kojo Bonsu

One of the three presidential aspirants of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Bonsu, has faulted the leadership of the party of the decision to rally their support behind former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Mr Bonsu, who once served as the Mayor for Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, it is against the party’s rules for its Executives to declare support for a candidate running for a position.

“I’m doing a decent campaign. My issue is that the party has rules and the election regulations say that when you are an executive, you cannot support one person because you are part of the leadership of the party.

“But these things they are doing are wrong. Someone who wants a position would place his/her sticker alongside his contender and that’s not fair. Everybody is doing what they like, is that democracy,” he quizzed in an interview with Kumasi-base OTEC FM on Tuesday, May 9.

Former President John Mahama, former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor and Mr Kojo Bonsu want to participate in the 2024 Presidential elections on the ticket of the NDC.

Despite the current situation in the party, Mr Bonsu says he remains resolute in his efforts to emerge victorious.

According to him, such endorsement does not win elections as the NDC failed to win the 2016 general elections albeit millions showed support.

“I’m not discouraged, no way. I’m still focused, I’m a serious person. It doesn’t discourage me because, during the 2016 elections, there was a big rally in Accra, millions of people were there but after the elections were over, we lost over one million votes.

“So things like this do not frighten me,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Duffor has filed an interlocutory injunction at an Accra High Court to halt the primaries scheduled for May 13, over “faulty voters register.”

Mahama to fight corruption in Ghana

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has pledged to wage a vigorous anti-corruption campaign when voted into power.

Mr Mahama contends corruption is one of the channels through which state resources are wasted.

Addressing NDC delegates at Garu in the Upper East Region, the NDC flagbearer hopeful stressed that any individual found engaging in corrupt practices under his administration will be dealt with regardless of his or her party affiliation.

“NDC is going to come into office, and we are going to launch a strong fight against corruption because we all know that corruption is one of the waste pipes in this country. People who appropriate the money of the state must be brought to book and sanctioned and NDC is going to do that”.

“It doesn’t matter whether the people are our own or from some other party, we will make sure that the sword is slammed equally and anyone who takes the people’s money must suffer for it.”

Mr Mahama also promised to repair Akufo-Addo’s problematic Free SHS policy and the National Health Insurance Scheme if he is re-elected President in the 2024 elections.

He said reviewing the two policies will ameliorate the plight of Ghanaians and enhance the policies.

“Free SHS is not working properly, the benefit it is supposed to give the parents, they are not getting. I can tell you today that the money we are spending on our children to go to school is far more than when we used to pay school fees”.

“We are going to repair the free SHS and make it better and create the situation when where school reopens, all the children will go together and when they vacate they all come home together.”

‘I have done what any Health Minister would have done’ – Agyemang Manu to critics over ‘dying’ NHIS

Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu has rubbished calls for his resignation over the poor state of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Former President John Mahama has asked the Health Minister to resign after admitting that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is on the verge of collapse.

“He (Health Minister) has admitted that he has failed. He has not been able to grow the NHIS, and he says it has failed… he has no business being the minister for health. He should resign”.

Reacting to his request, Mr Agyemang Manu accused the former statesman of employing propaganda tactics.

He noted that he has done his best as Health Minister just as anyone in his position would have done.

“An elderly respectable statesman like former President John Dramani goes on this lane into the gutter, in the gallery, doing propaganda that the health minister should resign.”

“I came to work for the nation, and I have done what any Health Minister would have done,” he added.

The Health Minister’s comments go to communicate that he would not be resigning as asked.

According to the Health Minister, he no longer uses the NHIS and instead prefers to pay for his medical care.

He complained vehemently that people who are unable to pay are being denied access to medical treatments, claiming that the treatment given to NHIS card holders at the various clinics is subpar.

This is not the first time the Health Minister has been asked to step down. He was asked to leave his position over the procurement of some COVID-19 vaccines executed by the Ministry of Health.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has said some health facilities are yet to receive money from the government for services provided that were catered for by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

At a meeting with branch and constituency executives of his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sefwi Adobokrom, in the Bia East Constituency, Mr. Mahama said holders of the NHIS card are being turned away from most health facilities because government is not paying their claims.

“Health facilities have not been paid since last year for services provided to card holders. How do you expect them to continue treating them”, he asked.

Meanwhile, the former statesman has advised the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu to step aside from his role over his failure to ensure the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr Agyemang Manu has said that the Scheme is no longer effective, confessing that he no longer uses the programme and instead prefers to pay for his medical care.

He complained vehemently that people who are unable to pay are being denied access to medical treatments, claiming that the treatment given to NHIS card holders at the various clinics is subpar.

Reacting to the comments, the former President said “He (Health Minister) has admitted that he has failed. He has not been able to grow the NHIS, and he says it has failed… he has no business being the minister for health. He should resign”.

  • UTV release disclaimer regarding bogus John Mahama remark shared by NPP activists

UTV release disclaimer regarding bogus John Mahama remark shared by NPP activists

An alleged artwork that the management of Despite Media Group subsidiary UTV, based in Accra, purportedly released over remarks about ethnic groups allegedly made by former president John Dramani Mahama, has been retracted.

The false artwork depicting Mahama reportedly urging delegates in the Eastern Region to reject the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was categorically denied by the show’s host on Friday (April 14) on the Mpu Ne Mpu program.

“Owners of our station are responsible and have toiled to make it, so there are somethings we don’t do.

“It has come to light that some people are using UTV’s name and logo on purported comments by former president John Dramani Mahama, that we were the authors of that statement,” the host said.

He continued: “I stand on behalf of our owners …and management to state that as UTV, what is said, was not authored by us. It is some unscrupulous people who manufactured it and put the UTV logo on it to make it look as though it was by us.

“This is to state officially that UTV knows nothing about this. Our logo was misused in the context. It is people whose thinking I do not know of,” he stressed before reading out the real quote that was doctored into the now disclaimed version.

Some known New Patriotic Party (NPP) activists including a presidential staffer, Nana Hesse Ogyiri, shared the artwork of the purported quote, in which the former president “speaks” against the Ashanti Region.

“Don’t be like Ashanti Region. They are emotionally attached to the NPP that they don’t even think before voting for them. Your party and your son has led Ghana into a ditch, be bold to vote against them. Be different. Come back to the NDC in 2024 and we wont neglect you this time,” the comment read.

A search on UTV’s social media feeds at the time of the publication showed that a similar artwork was posted on April 11, 2023 except that the accompanying text has nothing to do with the Ashanti Region or the NPP.

The original quote reads: “By God’s grace we have the experience, we didn’t buy it in the store, we didn’t learn it in school, it is God who gave us the opportunity to gather that experience. Don’t worry about what some people are saying, it is God’s will, I attend church and when I pray God speaks to me and God has said this is the time for NDC, he has given us power. If God decides no one can change it.”

Mahama completed his regional tour of the Eastern Region on Thursday and is expected to start the Greater Accra Regional tour almost immediately.

His aide, Joyce Bawah-Mogtari has also dismissed the purported quote via a tweet that read: “Wait a minute: Treat with utmost contempt, fake news headlines being churned out by a desperately unscrupulous government that has absolutely nothing to show for itself than to hide behind faceless lies and propaganda against notable political opponents!”

  • “Dog meals” for SHS students comment – Mahama challenges media to fact check

Former President and NDC flag bearer hopeful John Dramani Mahama is charging the media to fact check his comment about poor feeding of Senior High School students.

The former President faced heavy backlash from the governing New Patriotic Party when he said even dogs will reject food being served students under the Free SHS program.

Speaking to delegates in New Juaben North and South as part of his three- day tour of Eastern region which ends on Thursday he explained that “recently I spoke about poor quality of meals for students in Senior high schools. But the NPP insulted me. I want Journalists to fact check. This is a challenge to you (Journalists).

Go to the SHS students to ask them about the quality of food being served. And as I said with apology that the food being served the children in school not even a dog will eat that food in the house. Journalists go to the schools to interview the children and see for yourself if these are the kind of food Senior High School students deserve to eat”.

He said the poor implementation of Free Senior High School has impaired quality education at the secondary level however government is reluctant to listen to stakeholders for review of the policy.

According to Mr. Mahama, the constitution envisaged these challenges reason it prescribed a progressively free education which the NDC started.

However for populist agenda to win election, Akufo Addo decided to implement the policy wholesale hence the serious challenges affecting the policy.

“When you came everything Free SHS. Now the children can’t go to school to learn. They go to school three weeks and come home. Their meals are bad. I have seen videos where food were being shared to students, the quality can’t be compared to what we feed them at home”.

“Parents are spending more on children now than when they were paying fees. That is why we have called for consultation with stakeholders to review .But they went round to say I sad I will cancel it .That is the propaganda they did in 2016. But we started Free SHS with day students .At our time, day students were not paying schools fees in secondary school. We announced we were going to start with boarding students so in the first year September we selected 140,000 boarding students for Free SHS so how can I cancel it “. Mr.Mahama said.

“Today, if you go to see the kind of food the children are eating in the schools…you shudder to serve such food to your dogs at home,” he told delegates and party members in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa Constituency.

Reacting to Mr Mahama’s comment, Mr Kwarteng said it is unpresidential for the former President to speak that way.

In a Facebook post, Mr Kwarteng noted “Former President John Dramani Mahama is known for his unpresidential remarks but little did we know he could be such loose, vulgar and low. How do you equate food for human beings to that of dogs? Jesus Christ!

“Mr Mahama is not only wrong in demeaning our collective efforts in providing quality education for Ghanaian students but he’s also wrong for reducing the school children to dogs. That’s insulting.

NPP stalwarts were transported to Tamale to hoot at Mahama in Damongo – NDC

Reports that former president John Dramani Mahama was recently hooted at in Damongo when he attended the enskinment of the new Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jawu Soale, on Monday, March 20, 2023, have been refuted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Savannah Regional branch.

This comes after a video went viral showing a section of the audience allegedly cheering as Mahama and other dignitaries, such as Vice President Dr. Bawumia and the Jinapor brothers, descended from the stage they were on to address the crowd.

The persons who were hooting, even though were a small section of the crowd, could be seen clapping and screaming “away, away, away”.

A statement from the NDC stating the facts of the incident alleged that the booing party were NPP supporters bussed from parts of the northern region for the specific purpose.

Adding that despite their unruly behaviour, Mahama “was welcomed with cheers and a loud applause as his brilliant speech touched the hearts and minds of his tribesmen, chiefs, and elders at the ceremony.

“There was absolutely no reason or cause for anyone whatsoever to hoot at President Mahama. The false narrative of being booed must be treated with contempt,” the statement read in part.

Explaining the source of the unruly crowd, the statement continued: “It was observed that a small group of people who were part of an unruly and uncouth supporters of the NPP were on the blind side of President Mahama and his delegation, shouting and recording themselves. In the process, the detachment of police and military personnel ensured that they remained where they were, without the people at the durbar hearing whatever they were saying.

Speaking at the ceremony, former President Mahama expressed his pride in being a Gonja and was that his tribesmen peacefully undertook the enskinment process.

Despite their political differences, he continued, they are still brothers from the North and must coexist in harmony for the growth of northern Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia continued by saying that the government would continue to assist the development of the Gonja kingdom and the king’s palace in the Yagbonwura’s address.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential hopeful will also hold a public lecture on political party financing in Ghana.

It is believed that Mr Mahama will use the funds to support his campaign, as well as aid other party activities just as he did in previous years.

Meanwhile, some party stalwarts and bigwigs such as Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, among others are expected to grace the occasion tomorrow.

On Tuesday, as part of his preparations towards the NDC primaries scheduled for May, Mr John Mahama filed his nominations to contest the flagbearership position.

The filing of nomination was done by his campaign team led by a leading member of the NDC, Prof Joshua Alabi.

They submitted the required documents as well as fees at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday March 21, 2023.

Prof Alabi gave a strong indication to the Electoral Commission ahead of the 2024 general election that they will not tolerate any level of compromise that will be disadvantageous to their candidate.

The former president will come up against former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu and businessman, Ernest Kwaku Krobea, as well as former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, in his quest to run on the ticket of the NDC come 2024.

  • It’s “scary” to choose Mahama – Nii Noi Nortey to Ghanaians

It’s “scary” to choose Mahama – Nii Noi Nortey to Ghanaians

A former chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Klotey Korley Constituency, Mr. Nii Noi Nortey, has urged young people to disregard the promises made by former President John Dramani Mahama, reiterating the fact that he has nothing better to provide Ghanaians.

According to Mr. Nii Noi Nortey, choosing Mr. Mahama is not only scary but also empty.

“Any time Mahama is talking, you could see how desperate he is… He is soo desperate that he can even insult without thinking. He does not have a single solution to the country’s problems. Mahama is just desperate to rule the country again, hence his penchant for making false claims of having all the answers to the country’s problems. Was it not under Mahama Ghana faced multiple problems like dumsor collapsing numerous businesses, poor infrastructure and the like?”

Speaking at TESCON general meeting at Accra Technical University College, Mr. Nii Noi added; “We want to hear something new and different from John Mahama. we want to hear him say he will do tertiary education free, we want to hear he will take care of our children right from birth to 18 years, we want to hear him say he will take full medical bill of our aged mothers and fathers…we want to hear something new and different ideas from him and not always trying to rubbish someone’s good initiatives.”

He asked Mr. Mahama and the NDC to mention a single social intervention they have made for Ghanaians.

“Why am I saying this? Because anytime NPP is in power we come up with soo many social interactions namely, Female Maternal Care for our pregnant mothers, NHIS for free medical care, Free SHS and more.”

“The incompetence of Mr. Mahama rather eroded the gains made by the erstwhile Kufuor government, thereby worsening the plight of the people. In the midst of the challenge, we are still constructing roads, building schools, paying nursing and teachers allowance…”

Mr. Nii Noi also stated the need for all TESCON members to sacrifice and have an enduring heart to achieve victory for the NPP.

“With you all around I believe we will break the eight. The good people of Ghana will retain the NPP government because of our good work. Put your energy and strength into this constituency and we will reward you because NPP rewards hard work.

Get us the numbers get us the people and help us break the 8,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of the Coastal Development Authority, Jerry Ahmed Shaib also advised the youth to ignore former President Mahama’s promises and champion President Akufo Addo’s works to every student on campus.

If you prefer the return of dumsor, let’s welcome Mahama’s empty promises back. John Mahama is not the option.”

He also urged them to vote for Nii Noi Nortey when nomination is opened.

“In 2024, look out for those who are vibrant, those you see relationships in them, affable and reliable. We’re looking for a candidate who will do the talk, who will give us power and snatch this seat from the NDC. Look out for the right candidate.

  • If I win the 2024 elections, I’ll finish initiatives that have been put on hold – Mahama

If I win the 2024 elections, I’ll finish initiatives that have been put on hold – Mahama

According to former president John Dramani Mahama, the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will finish off abandoned projects rather than start new ones.

John Mahama asserts that the administration cannot wait to launch fresh initiatives due to the nation’s economic state.

Speaking to delegates in the Tano North constituency as part of a campaign tour in the Ahafo Region, Mahama, a flagbearer aspirant of the NDC, said that when the party takes office, it will ensure that all abandoned infrastructural works are completed.

“With the economic crisis that we currently have, by the time the NDC comes into power in 2025, we are still going to have a restricted fiscal space because of the economic difficulties. A new NDC will not be in a hurry to start new projects. What we will do is that the projects that have been ongoing and have been abandoned and uncompleted, we will take an inventory of all of them and with the little resources, we will dedicate it to finishing them.”

Former President John Mahama has accused the Akufo-Addo administration of abandoning many of the projects started during his government’s tenure.

The former President says he finds it disappointing that a number of the projects remain uncompleted since his administration left office in January 2017.

According to him, schools and road projects among others initiated during his time as President have been left unattended to.

John Dramani Mahama has been describing this situation with development projects as very unfortunate.

The former president is campaigning to lead his party the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 general elections.

But the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed former President John Dramani Mahama’s claims that government has abandoned several projects initiated by the previous NDC administration in the country.

    SONA: Mahama hailed in parliament

Former President John Dramani Mahama received loud cheers from both sides of the house following his introduction by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, although each side had its own message.

Members of the minority side cheered Mr. Mahama on, while their counterparts on the majority side chanted “pensioner.”

Throughout this, President Akufo-Addo smiled and rubbed his arms together. The former statesman had arrived in a grey suit and was welcomed by many, including former President John Agyekum Kufour.

Mahama was one of many statesmen and personalities in parliament to listen to the president’s address on the state of the nation. Other attendees included former presidents, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, members of the diplomatic corps, justices of the Supreme Court, traditional leaders, and others.

    State of the Nation Address:

The State of the Nation Address (SONA) is a constitutional obligation and yearly tradition in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. This article states that the President shall deliver a message on the SONA to Parliament at the start of each session and before the dissolution of Parliament.

During the SONA, the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces reports on the status of the country, unveils the government’s agenda for the coming year, and proposes certain legislative measures to Parliament.

According to Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, Members of Parliament (MPs), the Speaker of Parliament, and the Judiciary are obliged to receive the President’s SONA.

Ghana@66: Mahama charges political leadership to make Ghana great and strong

Former President John Dramani Mahama has entreated political leaders to take up their mantle seriously in ensuring Ghana recovers its prestigious name.

He made the clarion call today, as Ghana celebrates its 66th Independence Day.

“We can, obviously, make our independence from colonial rule count if we put our minds to the task and eschew greed and divisiveness in all sectors of our national life. I also know political leadership has a greater responsibility towards making Ghana great and strong again,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Happy and a reflective 66th Independence Day to us all,” he added.

Although much is expected from the leaders, the former president noted that every citizen has a role to play, and therefore entreated all and sundry to work together for the greater good of the country.

“I, therefore, urge every Ghanaian including members of government to acknowledge our common but differentiated roles and responsibilities in order to deliver our best service to build the Ghana we want together.”

This year’s celebration is being held at Ho in the Volta Region for the very first time and under the theme  “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose.”

  • Ghanaians want Mahama because they believe in him – NDC MP

Ghanaians want Mahama because they believe in him – NDC MP

According to Dr. Clement Apaak, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South, most Ghanaians want Mahama as president because he is the only experienced one to save the economy.

The lawmaker said our debt to GDP is in a terrible state following the recklessness and incompetence of the Nana Addo-led administration.

He lamented our national debt has ballooned from 122 billion to about 500 billion with nothing to show for this reckless borrowing.

He said the current president, when in opposition, promised mouth-watering policies and programmes, promised Ghanaians heaven and earth but has delivered nothing but hellfire.

”When you take our debt at Ghc122 billion, and you ballooned it to about Ghc500 billion, and you have nothing significant to show for it; clearly you cannot expect people to think that it is okay.”

According to Dr. Apaak, the cost of living in Ghana has reached unsustainable levels, with the prices of goods and services rising all the time.

He claimed that we are all suffering and that when you go to the market to buy, you are not charged differently depending on which party you belong to.

For him, looking at what is going on and the kind of experience former president John Dramani Mahama has acquired and considering that he has been out of the office and had time to appreciate the issues and had not been an armchair observer but time without number, he proposed solutions including and admonishing this government to have gone to the IMF much earlier walking upright and not having to wait and go there in a wheelchair”.

He lamented that Ghana is literally begging China to cancel our loans, asking the Germans to intercede with the Chinese on our behalf so that they can put in a good word for us to get a bailout from the IMF that this government swore not to go to for bailout.

Ghana, he says, needs an experienced hand, someone who has had time to sit back, reflect, and analyse the issues, as well as the ability to turn things around.

  • Sacrifice Article 71 entitlement to show seriousness in scrapping ex-gratia – Sylvester Tetteh to Mahama

Sacrifice Article 71 entitlement to show seriousness in scrapping ex-gratia – Sylvester Tetteh to Mahama

Sylvester Tetteh, vice chairman of the communications committee in parliament, has voiced his unenthusiasm with former president John Mahama’s reelection campaign rhetoric.

He pointed out that the former President’s pledge to do away with ex-gratia is meaningless and that it will only be accepted seriously if he foregoes all the advantages he has had from the same policy.

He claimed that Mr. Mahama is the nation’s greatest beneficiary of Article 71 in its history.

“He has an opportunity. If indeed he means what he’s saying, he has an opportunity to demonstrate to Ghanaians.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/why-not-do-as-togbe-afede-did-by-returning-your-ex-gratia-kwaku-yeboah-interrogates-mahama/

“In this country, Togbui Afede said he doesn’t want to take his ex-gratia so he’s giving it to the country – and you want to be president again, and you are enjoying the benefits of Article 71 office holders you want to scrap. So the best test for you is to surrender it,” he said.

Speaking on JoyNews on Saturday, the legislator speculated that although the message of the former president may be valid, he cannot be trusted, saying he’s the “wrong messenger.”

He added that much as Mr Mahama was unsuccessful at scrapping ex-gratia during his tenure due to his inability to garner support, his personal decision should have made the difference.

Mr Tetteh, however, said that aside from Mr Mahama’s party supporters, no Ghanaian trusts his policies in that although he had been in office for a long period of time, he could not effect such a change.

    http://backend.theindependentghana.com/10-things-mahama-promised-to-do-if-re-elected-in-2024/

He explained that, with the desire to make such a change, the former president should have set an example when he was no more in power.

Former President John Dramani Mahama launched his campaign on Thursday, March 2, in a bid to contest for the flagbearership position of the NDC.

Mr Mahama has run for Ghana’s highest office three times, losing in the last two elections to current President Nana Akufo-Addo.

His campaign begins as Ghana’s struggling economy is the country’s top concern.

At the campaign launch, he promised to scrap ex-gratia under Article 71 if given the nod to lead the country as its president.

He also said he will stage a probe into public funds, especially Covid-19 funds and appoint a maximum of 60 ministers and among others, should he be given the nod to regain power.

  • I was not invited for Mahama’s campaign launch -Yaw Boateng Gyan

I was not invited for Mahama’s campaign launch -Yaw Boateng Gyan

A former national organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Boateng Gyan, claims that he was not invited to the campaign launch for the party’s flagbearer former president John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, he would have honoured any such invitation if it had been extended to him even though he belongs to a different camp in the internal contest.

“I did not attend because I was not invited. If I was invited, I would have honoured the invitation. He is a former president, he has been a former leader of the party and we have worked with him before so if he wants to be the flagbearer I would have sat through the event if I was invited, listen to what he has to say and congratulate him,” he told Okay FM in an interview.

Despite not attending the event, Mr Boateng Gyan said he monitored Mr Mahama’s address at the launch through the media.

He noted that while the former president deserves commendation for admitting to his mistakes while he was in power. The address Boateng Gyan said, was overreaching as Mahama spoke as if he had already been elected as flagbearer of the NDC.

Mahama, former Mayor of Kumasi – Kojo Bonsu, a businessman based in the United Kingdom – Ernest Kobea and former Finance Minister – Dr Kwabena Duffour whom Mr Boateng Gyan has thrown his support behind have all filed to contest for the NDC’s flagbearership.

According to Yaw Boateng Gyan, Mr Mahama cannot be the best candidate for the NDC going into the 2024 presidential election due to his performance record.

He said while the former president is quick to tout his infrastructure record, Ghana currently needs a leader that is economically inclined to deal with its challenges hence his support for the former Minister for Finance.

  • Return ex-gratia like Togbe Afede – Kwaku Yeboah to Mahama

Return ex-gratia like Togbe Afede – Kwaku Yeboah to Mahama

For Ghanaians to take John Dramani Mahama seriously, Dan Kwaku Yeboah, a sports writer with the Notwithstanding Media Group, has urged him to follow in the footsteps of Togbe Afede XIV.

The journalist wants Ghanaians to know there is some kind of dedication to the former President’s promise to abolish the honorarium when re-elected, who is running to represent the opposition National Democratic Congress.

He also indicated his government would work to scrap ex-gratia benefits given to appointees under the other arms of government.

“The payment of ex-gratia to members of the executive under Article 71 will be scrapped. And the necessary constitutional steps to abolish that payment will start in earnest in 2025.

“We will also begin the process of persuading the other arms of government other than the executive to accept the removal of this ex-gratia payment,” he said.

Reacting to his promise, Dan Kwaku Yeboah who casted some doubts opined the statement is enough a message to win Mahama the 2024 polls if he proves it by example.

Just as the Paramount chief and Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State did, Dan Kwaku Yeboah wants Mr. Mahama to follow suit to distinguish this statement from the one he made in 2015 which he didn’t honour.

He was speaking on Ɛkwanso Dwoodwoo on Peace FM same day the former President made the promise.

“You said it in 2015, the time you were in government, but you couldn’t scrap it, now that you’re on the bench (in opposition) you want to scrap what? Bring the ones that you’ve taken to set an example of what you’re saying.

“If the former president brings his ex-gratia, Kwame I will campaign for him, I will clap for him. Let him say he’s doing what Togbe Afede did, so he’s also doing the same…Kwame this is a big campaign message.

“I wanted him to set an example, actions speak louder than words….Togbe Afede is a human being, and Mahama is also a human being, so why not return it as Togbe Afede did?” he quizzed.
