Man City beat Chelsea in WSL thanks to Shaw

Manchester City’s win over Chelsea in the Women’s Super League has tightened the title race, with Khadija Shaw’s goal securing a 1-0 victory and putting City level on points with the four-time defending champions.

Shaw, the league’s top scorer, netted her 14th goal in 13 appearances, edging ahead in the Golden Boot race. Chelsea’s Lauren James, with 12 goals, was kept quiet in front of a packed Kingsmeadow.

Chelsea had a penalty appeal dismissed before halftime, and City keeper Khiara Keating made a crucial stoppage-time save to deny the hosts.

Both teams now have 34 points and identical goal differences, but Chelsea’s superior goal tally keeps them top for another week. City took the lead through Shaw after 14 minutes, and despite Chelsea’s efforts, they couldn’t find an equalizer.

Keating made several important saves, including one from Fran Kirby, as Chelsea pushed for a late goal. Despite Chelsea’s late surge, City held on for a crucial win in the title race.

  • Guardiola takes blame for Palmer’s Man City exit

Guardiola takes blame for Palmer’s Man City exit

Pep Guardiola has accepted responsibility for Manchester City’s failure to keep Cole Palmer, one of their highly-rated academy prospects.

The champions sold Palmer to Chelsea last summer, and since then, the 21-year-old has shone and been a standout player for the London club.

Guardiola admits that he did not give Palmer the minutes he wanted and understands his reasons for moving. Despite being a member of City’s Treble-winning squad last season, Palmer sought opportunities elsewhere to further his career.

The City manager said: “For young players, we always want them to stay but this is normal. After two or three seasons he wanted more minutes than he had the last season. I understand completely.

“If Palmer had the minutes I gave to Phil [Foden] from the beginning, Cole Palmer would be here — but I didn’t give them to him. That is my responsibility.

“Why? Because of Bernardo [Silva], Riyad [Mahrez], Phil. In that moment, I chose the other ones.

“After one season it is nice, and the second season but the third season it is, ‘Oh guys, I want to play, I don’t want to sit on the bench’.

“It’s normal. We understand as a club. We got an offer from an incredible top club like Chelsea and I’m really happy for him. In all clubs these types of things happen.”

Cole Palmer scored Chelsea’s late equalizer against Manchester City from the penalty spot when the sides met at Stamford Bridge in November.

He is currently Chelsea’s leading scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions and their top assist-maker with nine.

Guardiola said: “We knew the quality he has and the impact he has shown this season is enormous.

“It is not just goals and assists, it is the quality. He is an incredible threat for Chelsea.”

  • Pep confirms Grealish and Gvardiol out for blockbuster Chelsea match

Pep confirms Grealish and Gvardiol out for blockbuster Chelsea match

Pep Guardiola has provided updates on Manchester City’s squad ahead of their upcoming clash with Chelsea.

While Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol are confirmed absentees, Bernardo Silva’s availability hinges on a late fitness assessment.

Grealish, who sustained a foot injury during the FC Copenhagen match, will miss out, while Silva’s status remains uncertain after he was substituted in the second half due to a knock.

On a positive note, Guardiola mentioned the return of Mateo Kovacic and Sergio Gomez to training. However, Gvardiol is deemed unfit to participate in the upcoming fixture.

He told reporters on Friday: “Jack [Grealish], I think, will not be ready. I don’t know [his condition]. I need to speak with the doctors. I only know he is not able to play tomorrow. Bernardo [Silva], we will assess today in the afternoon training session. [Mateo] Kova [Kovacic] is training and Sergio [Gomez] is as well. The rest we will see.”

On Tuesday, following City’s 3-1 Champions League win over Copenhagen, Guardiola added that Gvardiol would be out for “two or three weeks” with an ankle ligament issue.

Silva has emerged as a pivotal figure for City, showcasing his importance with eight goals and four assists across all competitions this season. His potential absence would undoubtedly pose a significant setback for the team.

However, the return of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne from injury provides a boost. Moreover, Guardiola’s side has demonstrated resilience in managing without key players in the past.

Should Silva be unable to feature against Chelsea, Guardiola’s City will aim for his return in subsequent fixtures. They will look to have him back for the home match against Brentford on Tuesday or possibly for the away encounter with Bournemouth on February 24th.

  • Don’t be obsessed with goals, motivate your teammates – Guardiola urges Haaland

Don’t be obsessed with goals, motivate your teammates – Guardiola urges Haaland

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has advised Erling Haaland to maintain patience and trust in his abilities as he prepares for their Champions League encounter with FC Copenhagen.

The 23-year-old recently scored a brace against Everton, marking his return from a foot injury. However, he had failed to find the net in previous matches against Burnley and Brentford.

Guardiola emphasized the importance for Haaland to stay positive and not become overly fixated on scoring goals. Instead, he encouraged the striker to focus on his performance and allow the goals to naturally follow.

He said: “Erling is young, playing in the most difficult position on the pitch surrounded by four or five players with minor space.

“In the first half maybe we didn’t have the special delivery players, like Kevin [De Bruyne] for example, who can find him.

“In that moment he has to be positive. When he scored a goal, he reacted but he doesn’t need to score because he helps us with many things.

“He is defined by goals but it is not just scoring a goal. It’s how he is clapping, encouraging his mates and the first intense press. This is what we need from Erling.”

Despite Erling Haaland’s remarkable record of 40 goals in 35 Champions League games, with 17 of those goals scored while wearing a Manchester City shirt, Pep Guardiola emphasized the need for patience and understanding regarding the striker’s recent absence from first-team football.

He said: “But we cannot forget he has been two months out, which is a lot of time for a guy who is so tall.

“Back to the dynamic is not easy. He’s a huge competitor who wants to score goals. OK, we know that, so relax.

“If we don’t score today, or if he doesn’t score in 10 minutes, it’s OK. In the process, he has to try because the team always wins when they overcome bad moments.”

  • Pep heaps praise on Foden after hat trick in 3-1 win over Brentford

Pep heaps praise on Foden after hat trick in 3-1 win over Brentford

Pep Guardiola praised Phil Foden as an “exceptional” player after his hat trick helped Manchester City win 3-1 against Brentford in London. Guardiola said Foden is always reliable.

Initially, City faced a tough challenge from Brentford, with Neal Maupay scoring for the home team in the 21st minute. However, City’s goalkeeper, Mark Flekken, made several important saves to keep them in the game.

Just before half-time, Foden scored to level the game for City. In the second half, he scored two more goals to complete his hat trick and secure the victory for City.

With this win, City closed the gap with league leaders Liverpool to just two points. They have played one less game than Liverpool.

“We needed it [Foden’s performance] today,” Guardiola told a news conference. “I think Phil is playing the most [influential] season for the team in terms of goals and assists. How he played simple, how he can be more aggressive. He has the pleasure of scoring goals and the threat when he’s close to their box. Always, he is there.

“So he’s an exceptional, exceptional player. He is [young] and already has more than 250 games for City; that shows the impact he has had since he arrived.”

Foden’s hat trick was the second that he has scored in the Premier League, his first coming against Manchester United on October 2, 2022.

“I don’t know his limits,” Guardiola said. “He will decide. For him, football is the most important thing in his life. Of course, aside from his family and kids, it is the most important thing.

“It depends on him, but he enjoys it a lot. He loves to play football. When you see players like him playing in the street when you are a little boy, you have this sense of amateurism [in the way he plays].”

This was the first time in over five months that Guardiola could put both Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland in the starting lineup. De Bruyne had been working on getting back to full fitness after having hamstring surgery.

Meanwhile, Haaland made his first league start since December 6 after healing from a foot injury. However, he didn’t score in his comeback match.

“I cannot imagine one striker all around the world playing against Brentford surrounded by six players in the space of two, three metres distance, something like that. It’s uncomfortable,” Guardiola said.

“I cannot imagine that even the best, best strikers in the world could survive in there. But being there helps the players in the second position to be more involved and [creates] more chances to score a goal.

“So thanks to Erling being there, Julian [Alvarez] and Kevin and Phil have more spaces. Without him, it would be more difficult. So he helped us a lot today.”

Brentford were the only team to beat City both home and away in the Premier League last season.

“They’re so difficult [to play against],” Guardiola said. They’re an incredible team. Set pieces, corners, free kicks, throw-ins—I’v never seen a team better than this one.”

Towards the end of the match, there was an incident between City defender Kyle Walker and Brentford forward Maupay, which led to a short stoppage in play as the right-back spoke to referee Jarred Gillett.

Both Guardiola and Brenford boss Thomas Frank declined to elaborate on the incident when asked by reporters after the match.

  • You want Haaland? it’s easy – Pep responds to City’s ‘goal machine’ links to Real Madrid

You want Haaland? it’s easy – Pep responds to City’s ‘goal machine’ links to Real Madrid

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed Erling Haaland’s situation in response to recent reports linking the Norwegian striker with a move to Real Madrid.

Last week, Spanish reports indicated that the 23-year-old was dissatisfied with his life in Manchester and was considering a departure in the summer, with links to Los Blancos emerging.

Guardiola swiftly dismissed these rumours, asserting that they were an attempt to unsettle the striker. When asked again about Haaland’s situation, the Catalan manager reiterated his stance.

Talking to the media, Guardiola said [via Yahoo Sports]: “For one report, for one journalist or one Twitter account, one Instagram account, do you think they are going to change something that is going to happen? It’s not going to happen. It’s going to happen when Erling decides to extend the contract or not, when the club decides to extend a contract or not, or when we have potential offers to him or not. If someone wants Erling, it’s easy. Call Man City and ask. It’s what we do when we want to sign someone. It’s not more complicated than that.”

When asked if the club wanted Haaland to stay, Guardiola said, “What do you think? That we don’t want Erling to stay here for one decade. We want him—for a long, long time—at this club. For a long time. We are in love with him; we want him.”

Yet Guardiola admitted that he does not know what the future will bring.

“I don’t have information. He arrived last season and the impact was incredible,” he said. “The beginning of this season, the numbers were really good too. He’s had two months of injuries. What happens in the future? Honestly, I don’t know. We are happy to have him, and hopefully he’s happy to be with us. That is what we know. And the rest? I don’t know.”

City is poised to commence new contract negotiations with Haaland, who played a pivotal role in the club’s Treble-winning season last year, scoring 53 goals.

Despite being sidelined for the past two months due to injury, the 23-year-old has sustained his exceptional performance this season, currently sharing the top spot in the Premier League scoring charts with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Haaland recently made a highly anticipated comeback for Manchester City in the match against Burnley last week. His full return to action is expected today, as the city faces Brentford away from home.

  • Man City’s Claudio Echeverri experience ‘strong chest pain’ during Argentina U23 Olympic Games

Man City’s Claudio Echeverri experience ‘strong chest pain’ during Argentina U23 Olympic Games

Manchester City’s promising talent, Claudio Echeverri, is set to undergo a medical evaluation after reporting intense chest pains while on international duty with Argentina.

Echeverri, part of the Argentina squad, actively contributed to a 5-0 victory over Chile in an Olympic Games qualifier for the Under-23 side.

Following the match, the 18-year-old, who has committed to joining Manchester City from River Plate, disclosed experiencing chest pains during the game.

He affirmed his intention to consult with the medical team to address and assess the issue.

He told TyC Sports: “I had a very strong pain in my chest; I couldn’t breathe well and I was very scared. Just in case, I’m going to talk to the doctors to see what it is because something like this had never happened to me and I felt very scared.”

Echeverri received on-field treatment for several minutes during the first half of the match and was subsequently taken off on a stretcher.

Despite briefly returning, he was eventually substituted in the 64th minute. Argentina’s victory secures their qualification for the second round with a match to spare as they pursue a spot in the 2024 Paris Games.

The situation has sparked genuine concerns for Echeverri and Argentina, with the young player set to undergo an assessment before obtaining clearance to resume action.

Scheduled to spend the remainder of the year with River Plate, Echeverri is poised to join Premier League champions Manchester City in January 2025.

  • Haaland is coming back – Pep hints after months of injury sideline

Haaland is coming back – Pep hints after months of injury sideline

Pep Guardiola has officially stated that Erling Haaland is ready to make his comeback for Manchester City in Wednesday’s match against Burnley, marking the end of his nearly two-month absence due to a foot injury.

Haaland’s last appearance was in the 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa on December 6. He resumed training during Manchester City’s journey to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup before the Christmas break.

Despite missing the past 10 games, the 22-year-old striker has managed to score an impressive 19 goals this season. His return to the squad against Burnley this week is eagerly anticipated by fans and adds a significant boost to Manchester City’s attacking prowess.

“First time he is back,” Guardiola told a news conference on Tuesday.

“We have all the squad, we are stronger. He is an important player for us.”

Pep Guardiola has hinted at different approaches for the return of two key players for Manchester City.

While he previously suggested a gradual reintroduction for midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who has been sidelined for five months with a hamstring injury, Guardiola indicated that Erling Haaland might be ready for an immediate comeback into the team at the Etihad on Wednesday.

The contrasting strategies reflect the careful management of player fitness and the specific circumstances surrounding their respective injuries.

“Haaland had a stress of the bone, so it is a completely different approach, but step by step,” he said.

As Manchester City prepares to face Burnley, they bring with them the momentum of a seven-match winning streak, which notably includes a 1-0 victory over Tottenham in the FA Cup on Friday.

Heading into the second half of the season, Pep Guardiola’s team is positioned five points behind league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League. The pursuit of a record fourth consecutive title adds an extra layer of significance to their upcoming fixtures.

City’s form and ambitions underscore their determination to maintain their winning streak and secure another title in the ongoing season.

“It’s one game at a time,” Guardiola said.

“We made these [winning] runs in the past because it was just one game. It’s Burnley, Burnley, Burnley.

“It doesn’t matter what we have done in the past, but I am delighted we have almost all of the squad fit. [Manuel Akanji] is back. He trained really well without knee problems and John [Stones] as well.

“That is the best news for an important part of the season. Of course, with the FA Cup and Champions League, it is important to have everybody.”

In the midst of recent revelations about England defender Kyle Walker’s private life, Pep Guardiola has affirmed that Walker will continue as the captain for Manchester City.

Walker addressed the situation in a media interview, providing an explanation for his actions and offering an apology to his family. Guardiola, while acknowledging the circumstances, has decided that the 33-year-old will retain his role as club captain.

  • Omar’s move to Man Utd doesn’t mean ‘everything is going to change – Pep

Omar’s move to Man Utd doesn’t mean ‘everything is going to change – Pep

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has cautioned Manchester United that recruiting executive Omar Berrada from their rivals won’t resolve all their issues.

United has appointed Berrada as their new CEO, concluding his nearly 10-year tenure at City. While United views this major appointment, following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s involvement at Old Trafford, as a significant achievement, Guardiola emphasises that the move won’t inherently narrow the gap with City.

“Kevin De Bruyne is still in Man City,” said Guardiola.

“De Bruyne will play here. Erling Haaland will play here, so in the end, it’s not that simple like that. Maybe United thinks that with this person everything is going to change. Congratulations. I don’t know if this is going to happen.

“He [Berrada] is a lovely person, an incredible character, and an incredible professional.

“Yesterday I saw him; we hugged and I wished him all the best. Deeply, I wish him the best because he’s a fantastic person.

“But I don’t know if [by] doing this [clicking his fingers], everything is going to be sorted and it works. If it does happen, then, oh my god, they have to make a stand for Omar Berrada in the future because he’d deserve it.”

Berrada played a crucial role in City’s off-field framework, serving as the chief operating officer at the Etihad Stadium for four years. In 2020, he earned a promotion to the position of chief football operations officer at City Football Group.

His collaboration with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, director of football Txiki Begiristain, and CEO Ferran Soriano has been instrumental in City’s unparalleled success, highlighted by last season’s treble.

Guardiola admits Berrada will be missed but insists the club will “move on.”

“Obviously his knowledge goes to United; that’s the reality,” said Guardiola.

    Pep Guardiola

“When you buy a player from another club, you buy the knowledge that this player has had in the past with other managers and team members. That is normal. In this club, these situations happen.

“The club will move forward. Maybe we’ll find a way to replace him and we’ll continue because the new guy is coming, maybe from here; Ferran and Khaldoon will decide.

“We will be well prepared; we will adapt, adjust and move forward. We learned a lot from Omar but he’s learned a lot from the club and now he’s gone to United.”

  • Kalvin Phillips seals loan deal to West Ham

Kalvin Phillips seals loan deal to West Ham

Out-of-favor Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has finalised his loan move to West Ham, aiming to secure regular playing time.

The 28-year-old England international, who joined City from his childhood club Leeds in the summer of 2022 for £42 million ($53 million), enjoyed a successful debut season with the club, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup as part of a Treble-winning team.

Despite his initial achievements, Phillips struggled to convince manager Pep Guardiola of his value, starting only two Premier League games in the 2022–23 season and accumulating a mere 89 minutes of top-flight football this season.

Now, he looks to rejuvenate his career under David Moyes at the London Stadium.

Phillips, who will wear the No. 11 shirt at his new club, has told West Ham’s official website of taking on a new challenge in the English capital: “I’m really pleased to be here. There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now. There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the club, and I can’t wait to be part of it.

“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”

The agreement between West Ham and Phillips does not incorporate an option for a permanent transfer, indicating that there are no plans for a permanent move at this juncture.

Nevertheless, Phillips has the opportunity to showcase his skills and will be determined to remain in consideration for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

  • Argentine wonderkid Echeverri joins Manchester City from River Plate

Argentine wonderkid Echeverri joins Manchester City from River Plate

Manchester City has finalized the acquisition of the highly regarded Argentina under-23 midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate, as announced by the club on Thursday.

The 18-year-old has committed to a contract with the Premier League champions until June 2028.

However, he will continue his tenure at River Plate until next January before making the move to City.

According to sources cited by ESPN, the deal is valued at approximately £12.5 million ($15.9 million), with additional add-ons.

Echeverri, identified by sources as having attracted interest from Barcelona, served as the captain of Argentina during the under-17 World Cup last year. He played a pivotal role in their journey to the semifinals, where they faced a penalty shootout defeat against Germany.

Echeverri showcased his goal-scoring prowess in the U17 World Cup, netting five goals, including a hat trick against Brazil in the quarterfinal. He was recognised with the Bronze Ball award as the tournament’s third-highest scorer.

Having made his debut for River Plate in June of the previous year, Echeverri made an instant impact, providing an assist in a 3-1 victory over Instituto. In total, he has accumulated six first-team appearances for the Argentine giants.

The agreement City has reached for Echeverri mirrors the arrangement used for Julián Álvarez, who joined the Etihad from River Plate in January 2022.

Álvarez stayed in South America until the subsequent summer, making his Premier League debut in August 2022.

Since then, he has played a role in City’s victories in the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup. Additionally, he was part of the Argentina squad that secured the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

  • Man City’s Kalvin Phillips move to West Ham on loan – Sources

Man City’s Kalvin Phillips move to West Ham on loan – Sources

West Ham has reached an agreement for a loan deal with Manchester City for midfielder Kalvin Phillips, as reported by sources to ESPN.

The deal is still in progress, and negotiations for an option to make the move permanent in the summer are currently underway, according to a source.

Last week, ESPN reported that West Ham was among several clubs showing interest in Phillips, who is eager to secure a move from Etihad in the January transfer window for consistent first-team football, aiming to maintain his spot in the England squad ahead of the European Championships in Germany this summer.

Despite making a £43 million ($54.5 million) transfer from Leeds United to City in 2022, Phillips has not been a significant part of manager Pep Guardiola’s plans.

With just two starts for City this season, even in the absence of starting defensive midfielder Rodri, Phillips has struggled to secure regular playing time.

West Ham manager David Moyes has a long-standing interest in Phillips, having even considered a part-exchange involving the midfielder for Declan Rice last summer, who eventually joined Arsenal.

  • Pep Guardiola! The man with many trophies—Check out 6 records of City coach as he turns 53

Pep Guardiola! The man with many trophies—Check out 6 records of City coach as he turns 53

    Pep Guardiola stands
as one of the preeminent managers of his era, having achieved remarkable success since embarking on his managerial career in 2008.

The Manchester City maestro commenced his managerial journey with Barcelona’s youth squad in 2007, eventually ascending to the senior team in 2008, succeeding Frank Rijkaard, according to France24.

Over the years, the 53-year-old Spaniard has etched his name in football history with triumphant spells at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and presently, Manchester City. Renowned for his innovative tactical approach, Pep has clinched multiple titles with each team, solidifying his status as one of the sport’s greatest managers.

As Pep Guardiola celebrates his 53rd birthday, let’s delve into six remarkable records that underscore his managerial prowess.

    1. Only manager to win continental treble twice

Guardiola stands alone in the annals of football history as the sole manager to secure the continental treble on two separate occasions. This remarkable feat was accomplished in 2009 and 2011 with Barcelona, where he clinched the Champions League both times.

In 2009, Barca beat Chelsea in the UCL final before replicating the milestone in 2011 when they beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

    2. Youngest manager to win the UCL

To date, Guardiola remains the youngest manager to ever lay his hands on the Champions League title.

He made history in 2009 when he lifted the trophy with Barcelona, aged just 38.

    3. Record for most consecutive wins

The Spaniard holds the record for the most consecutive wins in three different top leagues.

He first achieved the feat with 21 La Liga wins in a row for Barcelona in (2010/11), 19 wins with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga (2013/14), and 18 Premier League wins at Man City (2017/18).

    4. First manager to reach 100 EPL points

OptaJoe reports Guardiola became the first manager to hit the 100-point mark in a 38-game Premier League season with Man City in 2017/18.

City lifted the domestic crown that season.

    5. First manager to win domestic treble in England.
Pep has achieved so much at Man City since his arrival in 2017.

In his second season at the club, the Spaniard became the first manager to win the domestic treble in England after lifting the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

    6. Joint-most Super Cups

This is not an individual record per se but more of an honourable mention.

Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti boast the joint-most wins in the UEFA Super Cup.

The two managers have won the trophy on four occasions, with Pep’s last coming in 2023, when Manchester City beat Sevilla.

    Pep professes love for Barcelona

In a recent development, Sports Brief covered Guardiola’s emotional declaration of love for Barcelona during his acceptance speech after being honoured with the Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award for 2023.

The Manchester City manager openly expressed his deep affection for the La Liga club, attributing his success at Manchester City to the invaluable experience he garnered during his formative years at Barcelona.

Phillips ‘anxious’ over Man City exit as club sets valuation – Sources

Manchester City is maintaining their valuation of Kalvin Phillips, despite the player’s concerns that he might be priced out of a January transfer, as per sources reported by ESPN’s Rob Dawson.

Phillips, aiming for an exit from the Etihad due to limited opportunities under Pep Guardiola, faces challenges in securing a move as City demands a loan fee of approximately £7m with an obligation to make the transfer permanent in the summer.

Negotiations with Juventus have reportedly stalled over these demands, and Newcastle United has postponed making an official approach.

Crystal Palace, Everton, and West Ham United are also reportedly interested, according to Sky Sports.

City stands firm on their valuation, asserting that it is fair given Phillips’ status as an established England international, despite his struggle for game time under Guardiola.

The club is open to keeping Phillips in the squad until the summer and is reportedly relaxed about the situation.

Despite uncertainties surrounding his future, Phillips remains dedicated, continuing to work hard in training and maintaining popularity within the first-team group.

The midfielder hopes City might reconsider their demands as the transfer deadline on Feb. 1 approaches.

De Bruyne inspires City’s victory against New Castle

Kevin De Bruyne played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s 3-2 comeback victory against Newcastle, with Oscar Bobb securing a late winner.

City, initially trailing 2-1 at St James’ Park, witnessed a turnaround when De Bruyne, brought on in the 69th minute, scored within five minutes and assisted Bobb for the stoppage-time winner.

Bernardo Silva had given City an early lead, but goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon had Newcastle in front.

The win elevated City to second place in the Premier League table.

  • He was ‘too weak’ to tell his wife about us – Kyle Walker’s baby mama after Kyle’s marriage ended

He was ‘too weak’ to tell his wife about us – Kyle Walker’s baby mama after Kyle’s marriage ended

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker reportedly found it challenging to disclose the existence of his secret second child with Lauryn Goodman to his wife, Annie Kilner.

The model, Lauryn Goodman, shared details about the situation, revealing that the 33-year-old footballer, who recently ended his relationship with Kilner, felt too emotionally overwhelmed to communicate the news to his now-former spouse.

The revelation came after Kilner publicly addressed their split on Thursday, citing persistent allegations of infidelity.

Notably, Walker and Goodman had a previous split three years ago, during which time they welcomed a son together. However, Goodman has now disclosed the existence of a second child, a baby daughter, born while Walker was still married to Kilner.

The 32-year-old model has claimed that Walker was happy living a double life, stating in an exclusive interview: “I kept saying to Kyle, ‘You need to tell her. You need to tell Annie that you are our daughter’s father and that you are having a relationship with your children. We need to start 2024 in an open way.

“If everyone knows where they stand, they can make their own adult choices in life’. I didn’t want to cause any more heartache for Annie or be a b*tch but I had to tell her because Kyle was too weak to do it.

“There were hearings coming up surrounding our daughter; there was paperwork flying around; legal meetings had taken place; and Annie needed to know the truth before something went public. Kyle was happy hiding the truth because he was having two families and was scared about what would happen when Annie knew but I kept saying to him, ‘Our daughter can’t be a secret; she is a human’. I didn’t want them to split up or cause harm but it had to be out in the open for all of our sakes. When I told Annie, she was cool and calm.”

Walker’s England colleagues were reportedly aware of the pair’s relationship—ribbing the defender over his continued fling—and Goodman has even revealed that they would appear on FaceTimes with her. She added: “I remember going to a farm in Cheshire and he was feeding the animals with Kairo [their son] like all the other dads.

“But he tried to control me too, so I did as he said. He would FaceTime a lot. When he was at the World Cup or with England, he would message constantly, ‘Are you free? Are you free?’.

“I realised we were a secret family, though, as time went on. And that was what he wanted. I wasn’t a secret to his England teammates—they would come on the phone when he FaceTimed me.

In one call, he promised to bring Kairo a football back from the World Cup. And he did—one of the actual balls. The blue Man City kit he wears with ‘Daddy’ on the back was bought by Kyle too.”

Kyle Walker’s extramarital affair and the revelation of two children with Lauryn Goodman seem to have brought an end to his two-year marriage with Annie Kilner. Following Kilner’s public announcement about their separation, reports indicate that the Manchester City star has been expelled from their £2.4 million ($3 million) mansion.

In response, Walker issued a statement apologizing for his actions. This marks the conclusion of a marriage that has been overshadowed by persistent rumors of Walker’s infidelity, including allegations of indecent exposure at a bar in March of the previous year.

Despite the personal turmoil, Walker displayed resilience on the field.

The English international assumed his position as right back in City’s thrilling comeback victory against Newcastle on Saturday, contributing to narrowing the gap with league leaders Liverpool to just two points. Looking ahead, Pep Guardiola’s team is set for FA Cup action against Tottenham on January 26.

Kevin De Bruyne reveals newfound profession after injury sideline

During his prolonged absence from competitive football, Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne found a different role as a taxi driver for his children.

The Belgian international, who spent almost five months on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury suffered on the opening day of the Premier League season, marked his return with an assist in City’s 5-0 victory over Huddersfield in the FA Cup.

After the game, De Bruyne shared that he dedicated a significant portion of his time off to chauffeuring his children.

“To be honest, when you have three kids between three and seven, not a lot; I’m basically a taxi driver. I enjoyed it,” De Bruyne told reporters. “I think they enjoyed that Daddy could watch the games and now it will be harder for the Missus and everyone to work around the programme.”

De Bruyne admitted that the time away may have been good for him on a mental level after spending so long competing at the highest level twice a week. He added, “It’s not like I needed a break but I took it to turn a disadvantage into an advantage.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwvcoNbmoHI

When I reflect on my career, playing the last 10 years nonstop with a short break, maybe it was good for me to reset a little bit in a way and take care of myself when it is not really possible during the year. I hoped I could work hard and come back in a good way and I feel that I’m doing that but obviously I need to progress.”

But he said he did not enjoy being away from his teammates. “It’s everything. When you’re training for an injury, you’re always alone,” De Bruyne added. “You can train with other physios or people in the gym but you’re not really with the team so a lot of times you’re working outside these hours so it’s nice to be with the team competing again. You compete against yourself when you’re training.”

In an effort to prevent a recurrence of the injury, De Bruyne is not expected to start City’s upcoming away game against Newcastle. However, he may make a cameo appearance from the bench.

Following that, the team will travel to Abu Dhabi for a warm-weather training camp, where he will be able to regain match fitness in advance of their January 31 home game against Burnley.

  • Rodri heaps praise on Phil Foden after City game against Sheffield

Rodri heaps praise on Phil Foden after City game against Sheffield

Rodri lauded his team-mate Phil Foden after the England international guided Manchester City to victory over Sheffield United.

The 23-year-old midfielder assisted both goals as the champions cruised to a 2-0 triumph at Etihad, with Rodri benefitting from his colleague’s creativity to find the back of the net for the first time on home soil since February.

Julian Alvarez was also on the scoresheet as Pep Guardiola’s side moved ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table with Foden teeing up the Argentine for a tap-in.

On his goal, Rodri told Sky Sports: “I thought Phil [Foden] could set to me and then to be honest I didn’t have the intention to shoot but they were dropping so I did it.

“Phil has incredible ability to turn that fast. He has this plasticity with the ball he can turn so quick.

“We had to be patient but when we can find this pass he is a gamechanger. He increases the pace he can shoot and pass.”

Rodri also stressed the importance of City learning from their mistakes against Crystal Palace, when they surrendered a 2-0 lead at the Etihad to draw 2-2.

The Spaniard added: “We learned from the last games against Crystal Palace, same feeling of the game, controlling, but at the end they had chances and we drew.

“We had to keep focusing and they [Sheff Utd] didn’t have the intention to come to us so we had to keep the ball. Important for us this victory.”

As well as picking up a crucial win, City boss Guardiola was able to call upon Kevin De Bruyne for the first time since the season opener against Burnley — and the Belgian could feature more prominently at Newcastle on Matchday 21.

The Citizens boss said: “We’ve been waiting a long time for him [De Bruyne].

“He’s turning good the last week or so. He came for the trophies today for the picture and to be here and realise when to warm up and how the people support him and look forward to seeing him again.

“Maybe Newcastle he will be ready.”

  • Foden affirms City’s unwavering confidence after narrow escape against Toffees

Foden affirms City’s unwavering confidence after narrow escape against Toffees

Phil Foden emphasized that Manchester City maintained unwavering belief in their ability to overturn a deficit and secure a victory against Everton.

The reigning champions successfully navigated another Premier League challenge, clinching a 3-1 win with second-half goals from Foden, Julian Alvarez, and Bernardo Silva, which nullified Jack Harrison’s early goal.

Fresh from their triumph at the Club World Cup, City demonstrated resilience by winning their second consecutive away game in which they conceded the opening goal. This victory propelled them back into the top four in the Premier League standings.

Foden, 23, told Amazon Prime: “I thought we played really well in the first half and it seems to have been the same story as previous games.

“The manager just said to believe in ourselves at half-time because we’re a top team.

“In the second half, wow. I think we blew them away with the way we played.

“I want to praise Everton because I think they’ve been doing really well recently and are a top side.

“They make it difficult. I’m really happy with the result. It’s a difficult place to come.”

City remains five points behind Liverpool in the title race, although they have a game in hand. Foden hinted that the Treble winners are edging closer to hitting their stride, especially with several key stars nearing their return from injury.

The England international added: “We have massive players to come back in with the likes of Erling [Haaland], Jeremy Doku and Kevin [De Bruyne] so three important players.

“When they come back, hopefully they make the team stronger. I’m looking forward to them coming back.”

Everton has now suffered defeat in their last two matches following a run of four consecutive victories. This recent downturn leaves them just a point above the relegation zone.

However, goalscorer Jack Harrison encouraged his Toffees teammates to maintain faith and stay positive despite the challenging situation.

The former City winger said: “Unfortunately today we messed up on a couple of things and that’s costly against the best sides so we just have to be aware of that going forward.

“There’s still a long season left. We can only control what we can do and keep going game by game.

“Everyone will be resting and recovering to prepare for the next game.”

Newly crowned world champions Manchester City staged a remarkable comeback in the Premier League, securing a crucial victory at Goodison Park after falling behind.

Trailing at halftime due to Jack Harrison’s first-half strike, City displayed a splendid second-half performance.

Man of the match Phil Foden leveled the score eight minutes into the second half with a brilliant long-range effort.

Julian Alvarez then propelled Pep Guardiola’s team ahead by successfully converting a penalty kick, earned after an Everton handball in the box.

The fantastic second half was capped off when Bernardo Silva sealed the deal with an audacious chip from outside the box, beating a stranded Jordan Pickford and propelling City into fourth place.

We are hungry to go again – Guardiola after City winning FIFA Club World Cup

Pep Guardiola has expressed that his players are fueled with motivation to pursue more silverware this season following their recent triumph as FIFA Club World Cup champions.

Manchester City’s commanding 4-0 victory over Fluminense in Saudi Arabia secured their fifth major honor in 2023, making them the first English side to simultaneously hold the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Despite this monumental achievement, the team faces a demanding task with an upcoming fixture against Everton in just four days.

“When I close the chapter, it’s for the fact of eight years of incredible work behind the scenes. It’s unbelievable what we’ve done,” Guardiola explained in his post-match press conference.

“I have the feeling that of course today we’ll celebrate on the plane and tomorrow we rest. Goodison Park isn’t maybe the best to come back after winning the Club World Cup, honestly.

“But we’ll try to buy a new book and start to write beautiful histories. The players are still there, incredibly hungry and motivated. I’m really pleased for many people in the Club for many years.

“It’s a beautiful day. I could never have thought when I arrived in Manchester that we’d do what we have together, the titles we’ve won and winning the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.”

In a night that was largely filled with positive moments for Manchester City, there was a bit of concern when Rodrigo was forced off in Jeddah after a late collision. Despite the incident leading to his substitution, the Spain international was still able to join the team in celebrating their momentous achievement on the pitch.

Regarding Rodrigo’s fitness, Pep Guardiola provided an update, mentioning that a more detailed assessment of his condition would be conducted closer to their upcoming trip to Goodison Park.

He added: “I didn’t speak [with Rodrigo]. It looks like he feels good.

“It was a scare. The action was really tough.

“We’ll see in the next days how he reacts. I don’t know right now.”

  • Man City win FIFA Club World Cup

Man City win FIFA Club World Cup

Manchester City has concluded a historic 2023 by achieving a remarkable feat, becoming the first English club ever to concurrently hold the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The crowning moment took place in Jeddah on Friday, where City secured the FIFA Club World Cup in their inaugural attempt, triumphing over Brazilian side Fluminense with a convincing 4-0 victory in the final held at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s squad, having completed this unprecedented quintuple, will now return to Manchester and immediately shift their focus to preparations for the upcoming Wednesday clash in the Premier League against Everton, as they aim to continue their pursuit of securing a fourth successive league title.

Expressing the team’s pride in this extraordinary accomplishment, club captain Kyle Walker highlighted the significance of winning all five trophies in a single calendar year, labeling the achievement as “special.”

“We’ve shown over the past 12 months we are the best team in the world. Our results prove that and the consistency we have managed has been amazing.

“To win these five trophies – for me, the five biggest prizes available to us – is incredible. I am so proud to have been a part of this and I can honestly say it’s an honour to play alongside these players; I couldn’t ask for better teammates.

“And it isn’t just the players – the team behind the team here at City are the best you could ever ask for and I want to put on record my thanks and appreciation for every single person who works here day to day to try and help us be the best we can be.

“The level of quality in football across the world right now is scary. It’s really, really hard to win consistently, so to be sat here today having won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup is really special and a huge achievement.

“It’s been the best year I have had in football and something I will never, ever forget.”

The 2022/23 season marked a historic milestone in Manchester City’s illustrious 129-year history. A phenomenal run of form saw the team secure victories in 22 matches and draw in five of the final 28 contests across all competitions. This exceptional performance solidified City’s status as only the second English team ever to achieve the prestigious Treble, consisting of triumphs in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

The relentless pursuit of success carried into the subsequent season, where Pep Guardiola’s squad continued to make history by adding the Super Cup and Club World Cup to their already impressive collection. These achievements further cemented Manchester City’s legacy as a dominant force in football.

Pep Guardiola added: “I am so proud of this Club. What we have done is an outstanding achievement.

“To win this trophy is to be the best team in the world and our players, our coaches, our backroom staff, all of them work hard every single day to bring us this success.

“As a manager it is what I am most proud of; that we are always there. No matter how much we win, no matter what trophies we lift, we are there again to fight for the next one.

“To win the Treble was truly special, but to win two more trophies and now hold these five major titles shows the unique mentality of this team, of the Club and its fans.

“It is something no other English team has ever achieved and we will always remember this incredible time we spent together.”

For the City boss, the recent triumph represents another addition to his ever-expanding collection of silverware. Since his arrival at Manchester City in the summer of 2016, Pep Guardiola has now secured a total of 16 trophies. This impressive haul includes five Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, four League Cups, one Super Cup, one Club World Cup, and two Community Shields.

Across his entire managerial career, Guardiola’s trophy cabinet now boasts an astounding total of 37 major honors. The recent FIFA Club World Cup victory marks his fourth title in this competition, with previous successes achieved during his tenure with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, and Bayern Munich in 2013 before his latest triumph with Manchester City.

Manchester City concluded 2023 with an impressive 4-1 victory over Everton, extending their winning streak to four matches in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Despite missing an early penalty, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw rebounded with a remarkable hat-trick at Walton Hall Park.

Jill Roord contributed to the success with a first-half strike, solidifying Manchester City’s dominance on Merseyside. Despite Aurora Galli’s unstoppable effort providing a consolation goal for Everton, it was not enough to thwart City’s triumph.

Khadija Shaw now leads the division’s goalscoring charts with 10 goals, marking her second hat-trick of the season. The fixture also marked a milestone for Laura Coombs, who celebrated her 100th appearance for the club.

Manchester City’s overall record in 2023 reflects 22 wins, three draws, and seven losses, showcasing a strong performance throughout the year.

Man City’s Jack Grealish has a message for UFC star Leon Edwards after his win against Colby Covington

Manchester City’s Jack Grealish extended his congratulations to UFC fighter Leon Edwards following his victory over Colby Covington.

Edwards successfully defended his UFC welterweight title with a clear decision win in Las Vegas.

Grealish, a fellow Birmingham native, expressed his support for Edwards on Instagram both before and after the fight, posting messages to the British UFC ace.

After City surrendered a 2-0 lead on Saturday, drawing 2-2 with Crystal Palace, Grealish, who scored the opening goal, may have needed to shift his focus.

Despite his efforts, the champions couldn’t secure the win, prompting manager Pep Guardiola to publicly criticise his players.

Grealish, who has scored three league goals this season, will now temporarily shift his attention from domestic duties as the club heads to the Club World Cup, where they will face Urawa Reds on Thursday.

  • Man City, Real Madrid watch on as Bayern stalls Alphonso contract negotiations

Man City, Real Madrid watch on as Bayern stalls Alphonso contract negotiations

Manchester City and Real Madrid have reportedly been put on alert as contract negotiations between Alphonso Davies and Bayern Munich have hit an impasse, as per Sky Sport Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg.

The 23-year-old defender’s current deal runs until 2025, but Bayern’s offer falls short of Davies’ expectations, seeking a salary between €10 and €13 million per season.

Real Madrid has expressed serious interest in acquiring Davies and has initiated contact with his agents to explore the possibility of a deal.

The Canadian captain, who has contributed to five Bundesliga titles, including the 2020 treble, desires compensation on par with the club’s top earners.

However, Bayern remains uncertain about elevating his pay to that level.

Manchester City, who have previously shown interest in Davies, are likely to monitor the situation closely as the contract negotiations unfold.

  • Pep’s remarks on Kalvin Phillip’s exit in January force a Mourinho comparison of City and Roma

Pep’s remarks on Kalvin Phillip’s exit in January force a Mourinho comparison of City and Roma

Roma’s manager, Jose Mourinho, expressed frustration over the financial constraints binding the Serie A club, emphasising that their “reality is different” compared to clubs like Manchester City.

Despite Roma’s significant spending of over €100 million ($109 million) in Mourinho’s inaugural season, the last two seasons have seen minimal transfers totaling €9.5 million.

This conservative approach aligns with UEFA’s financial fair play regulations, leading to the sale of first-choice center-back Roger Ibañez to Al Ahli in August for financial stability.

Notably, marquee signings Romelu Lukaku and Renato Sanches were secured through loan deals this summer.

Compounded by the challenges of long-term injuries to striker Tammy Abraham and defender Chris Smalling, Roma currently find themselves struggling in fourth place in Serie A.

The imminent departure of center-back Evan Ndicka for the African Cup of Nations in January further exacerbates the defensive concerns.

Despite the desire to strengthen the squad in the upcoming January transfer window, Mourinho acknowledges the hurdles Roma faces due to financial limitations.

“Not that I’m jealous, but Man City paid €80 million ($87 million) for [Kalvin] Phillips and now Pep [Guardiola] has said it would be better for him to leave in January. So he’ll leave and they’ll get someone else,” Mourinho said in his news conference ahead of Roma’s Europa League clash with Sheriff on Thursday.

“Our reality is very different. We’d like one, two, three or four new players. Tiago [Pinto] too. And the owners, too. We all want to try and improve the team to make us better for the second half of the season.

“However, it’s not easy for us to do that. I’ll be honest; if we bring in a defender in January, I’ll already be happy. But if you ask me if I’d like more than that, of course I’d like more. But it’s not possible. They’re working to try to give me options, to give me a defender.”

In the recent 3-2 victory over Red Star Belgrade, Phillips, acquired by City for €49 million in 2022, secured only his second start for the club this season and impressively scored a penalty. Sources revealed to ESPN last month that Newcastle United are considering a move for the talented England midfielder.

Heading into Thursday’s encounter against Sheriff, Roma hold the second position in their Europa League group, with qualification for the next round already assured. Their latest Serie A fixture saw them secure a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina last Sunday.

Pep confirms Haaland’s absence in City’s final CL group game

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed that Erling Haaland will miss Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade but added that he expects him to be back in training on Thursday.

Haaland, who is Man City’s top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions this season, missed the defending Premier League champions’ win over Luton Town on Sunday with a foot injury.

It was the first league game he had failed to start this season.

The injury had previously seen the 23-year-old pull out of Norway’s European Championship qualifier against Scotland in November.

“He will be back on Thursday, the day after tomorrow, and we will see how he feels,” Guardiola said in a news conference on Tuesday.

“I cannot answer [if he can play on Saturday]. I don’t know right now. At the next press conference, I can be more precise about his condition.”

With the top spot in their Champions League group already confirmed, Guardiola already has one eye on Saturday’s visit to Crystal Palace and the Club World Cup semifinal the following week.

“We are going to rotate some players. We have three days, travel five or six hours, three days, three days, a semifinal, three days, and a potential final. I’m very pleased that tomorrow I can play some players who haven’t played lately,” he said.

City-Spurs ref controversy: Head of referee admits error in match officiation

The chief of the Referees Body (PGMOL), Howard Webb, acknowledged that the official overseeing the Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur match on December 3 erred by stopping play after a foul on Erling Haaland.

In the dying moments of the game, Jack Grealish was on a goal-scoring opportunity when referee Simon Hooper blew the whistle for a foul on Haaland in the preceding play, despite initially signalling for play to continue.

This decision led to several City players protesting the call, resulting in the club being charged by the FA for their conduct.

“Yeah, it is an officiating mistake,” Webb said on the ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’ TV programme.

“On this particular occasion, [the referee] sees a pretty strong, reckless foul challenge by Emerson Royal on Haaland. It’s in midfield, and the ball comes backwards.

“He does the hard work; he just hesitates a moment to see if an advantage is possible. But he recognises in his mind, thinking it through, that it was a strong challenge, it was reckless, and he is going to have to exercise caution.”

Webb said Hooper was “devastated over the mistake.

“At ground level, it’s not quite so easy to see the way that things are playing out as it is from an elevated view,” he added.

Man City, Real Madrid keeping Davies’ contract situation at Bayern

Manchester City and Real Madrid are closely monitoring the contract negotiations of Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich, which have reportedly hit a roadblock, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport Deutschland.

The 23-year-old defender’s current contract with Bayern is set to expire in 2025.

However, the club’s offer has not met Davies’ salary expectations, which range from €10–13 million per season.

Real Madrid has expressed a significant interest in Davies and has initiated contact with his agents to explore the possibility of a deal.

Davies, the captain of the Canadian national team, has played a key role in Bayern’s success, contributing to five Bundesliga titles, including the treble in 2020.

He is seeking a salary that aligns with the club’s top earners, although Bayern remains uncertain about placing him at that level.

Manchester City has previously shown interest in Davies and is likely to closely monitor the unfolding situation with the talented defender.

Pep gives injury update on Haaland but silent on striker’s availability for clash with Crystal Palace

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has given an injury update on Erling Haaland but remained mum on whether the prolific striker will feature in the upcoming match against Crystal Palace.

Haaland was absent from the City squad during their Premier League encounter with Luton Town over the weekend due to a bone injury.

Guardiola has now offered additional details on the injury and disclosed the timeline for Haaland’s return to training. However, the manager has not clarified whether Haaland will be available for the Crystal Palace fixture.

Speaking to reporters, the Catalan manager said: “He will be back on Thursday, the day after tomorrow, and we will see how he feels. I cannot answer [if he can play on Saturday]. I don’t know right now. At the next press conference, I can be more precise about his condition.”

On Sunday, the City head coach claimed that the Norwegian could hardly walk after the team’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa last week.

But the striker’s condition has been improving quickly since then.

Despite Haaland missing the team, the defending champions came back from behind to narrowly edge out Luton 2-1 last Saturday.

The 23-year-old, who is currently leading the Premier League Golden Boot race with 14 goals, will be back in training on Thursday, as revealed by his coach but it remains to be seen if he fully regains his fitness on time for the team’s league clash against Roy Hodgson’s Palace.

Leon Bailey’s second-half goal secured a well-deserved 1-0 victory for Aston Villa over Manchester City, extending Villa’s impressive home record to a club-record 14 successive league wins.

Bailey’s decisive moment came in the 74th minute when he skillfully cut inside and saw his shot deflect off Ruben Dias’ foot, beating Ederson and sending Villa Park into celebration.

Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, put on a dominant and energetic display throughout the match, registering 22 attempts at goal compared to City’s two. The defensive efforts, including a stunning double-stop by Emi Martínez in the first half, ensured Villa’s victory.

The win also marked the end of a 15-match winless streak against Manchester City in all competitions, dating back a decade.

With this victory, Villa climbed to third place in the Premier League table, having lost just once in their last 13 matches. They are now one win away from equaling a club-record 24 top-flight wins in a calendar year.

Boubacar Kamara returned to Villa’s starting XI having missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw at AFC Bournemouth due to a one-match suspension.

Otherwise, head coach Emery, taking charge of his 50th match for Villa, named an unchanged line-up for the visit of the reigning champions.

Jude Bellingham picks up 2023 Golden Boy prize after stunning start at Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham has been awarded the prestigious Golden Boy accolade for 2023, solidifying his status as the best young player globally.

The accomplished midfielder from England, aged 20, is recognised as the brightest talent under the age of 21.

His stellar contributions at both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid have earned him this esteemed recognition, substantiated by the receipt of a gleaming trophy.

Securing the Golden Boy title aligns Bellingham with a distinguished lineage of past winners, including football luminaries such as Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland.

The acknowledgement underscores Bellingham’s exceptional skills and marks him as a standout figure among the world’s emerging football talents.

Bellingham, who has scored 15 goals for the Blancos through 17 appearances to break records previously posted by Cristiano Ronaldo, said when collecting his prestigious prize in Turin: “I can’t be more grateful to all the people I have met along the way to help get me to the point I am at now.

“It’s about trying to make my team and country the best teams in the world and to be the best player in the world you have to help your teams win and to join that list is such a big honour.

“I think Wayne Rooney was probably my biggest influence growing up, obviously being from England and the way he played and the way he fought, but there are so many other players that I’ve taken bits from. I’m really grateful for everything football has given me so far in my life and the support from my family to keep playing and keep enjoying it has been huge.”

Erling Haaland has expanded his list of accolades, securing another trophy through the awards presented by the Italian publication Tuttosport.

The prolific Manchester City striker achieved a form of revenge against Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, claiming the Golden Player Man award.

This recognition comes on the heels of Haaland’s remarkable achievement of scoring 52 goals during City’s historic Treble triumph in the previous season.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland are anticipated to emerge as contenders for future Ballon d’Or awards.

They join a promising generation of talent, including Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe, Bayern Munich‘s rising star Jamal Musiala, and the dynamic Barcelona duo Pedri and Gavi.

This group of exciting young players is poised to usher in a new era, aiming to take the reins from the longstanding dominance of eternal rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

FA charges Man City for misconduct towards referee during Spurs clash; Haaland awaits punishment

    Manchester City faces charges
from the Football Association following the tumultuous events that unfolded after their 3-3 draw with Tottenham on Sunday.

On Monday, the FA officially announced that City was charged with a failure to control their players, stemming from the dramatic conclusion of the match against Tottenham.

The incident in question occurred when referee Simon Hooper did not allow play to continue despite Jack Grealish being sent through on goal by Erling Haaland in the dying moments of injury time.

In response to the decision, players from Manchester City swarmed referee Simon Hooper, expressing their discontent with the lack of advantage given.

Notably, Erling Haaland was captured vehemently expressing his frustration towards Hooper and later took to Twitter, posting the letters ‘WTF.’

There is a possibility that Haaland could face a misconduct charge for his actions, although confirmation is pending.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou openly acknowledged that he felt his team had “got away with one” when the referee blew the final whistle, preventing Grealish from advancing unopposed towards the goal.

“It’s alleged that, during the 94th minute of the fixture, the club failed to ensure their players did not behave in a way that was improper.
“Manchester City has until Thursday, December 7, 2023, to respond to the charge.”

A possible misconduct charge for Haaland could result in a ban, though it is unlikely to happen before the club’s match against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

City will await any additional punishment.

“WTF”: Pained Haaland blasts referee following ‘controversial’ halt in play in Spurs clash

    Erling Haaland (23)
could potentially face disciplinary measures following his social media expression of dissatisfaction with referee Simon Hooper after Manchester City’s intense 3-3 draw with Tottenham on Sunday.

The City striker was visibly upset when the referee failed to play an advantage in the closing moments of the thrilling Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite being fouled, Haaland quickly got back up and played Jack Grealish through on goal, only for Hooper to halt play and award a free-kick.

Haaland joined several City players in expressing frustration towards the official, and he continued his protests after the game by sharing a clip of the incident on X (formerly Twitter) with the comment “WTF.”

Manager Pep Guardiola, unaware of Haaland’s social media post during his post-game interview, acknowledged the player’s on-field reaction and conceded that he could understand Haaland’s frustration.

“It’s normal,” said the City boss. “His reaction was the same for 10 players. The rules are that you cannot talk with the referees or fourth officials, so we should have had 10 players sent off today.

“He’s a little bit disappointed. Even the referee—if he played for Manchester City today, he would be disappointed in that action, that’s for sure.”

Guardiola had tried to temper his criticism, saying in a TV interview he did not want to make a “Mikel Arteta comment,” in reference to the Arsenal manager’s controversial remarks after a game against Newcastle last month.

He added in a press conference, “I make mistakes; the players make mistakes.

“It surprised me because in the moment Erling went down, if you whistle in that moment, it’s fine.

“But when he stands up and continues and the referee makes that gesture to play on, and after he (Haaland) makes the pass, he then stops the game—I don’t want to criticise him.

“On the touchline, sometimes I lose my mind and my gestures are not proper but for many years as a manager, I’m not a guy; when I’m refreshed, I comment.”

Tottenham coach admits ‘unfair’ free-kick given his side leading an equalizer in Man City clash

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou conceded that his team experienced a stroke of luck in their 3-3 draw with Manchester City, courtesy of a controversial late decision.

The match took a turn when referee Simon Hooper chose to halt play and award a free-kick for a foul instead of allowing the game to continue as Erling Haaland had just set Jack Grealish through on goal.

The decision interrupted a potentially threatening City attack in the closing stages of the game, with the score level at 3-3.

Postecoglou acknowledged that his team benefited from the decision, recognising the fortunate turn of events.

Asked if his team “got away with one” at the end of the game, the Australian said, “Yeah, I guess so, mate.”

He added to BBC Match of the Day: “It doesn’t affect me at all. I don’t think that is the story of the game today; there are better storylines from that fantastic game of football than one refereeing decision.”

The referee’s decision marked a dramatic conclusion to an exhilarating Premier League clash. Spurs initially took the lead with an early goal from Son Heung-min, but the joy was short-lived as the Korean inadvertently scored an own goal, leveling the score.

Phil Foden then propelled the home side into the lead, only for Giovani Lo Celso to bring Tottenham back on even terms. Jack Grealish thought he secured victory for City after 81 minutes, but Dejan Kulusevski’s header in the 90th minute sealed the final equalizer.

The crucial moment occurred after Kulusevski’s goal when referee Simon Hooper, initially playing advantage, later awarded a foul.

This decision drew strong reactions, with City’s Erling Haaland expressing his frustration both on the pitch and on social media, posting “Wtf” alongside a clip of the incident.

The draw places Spurs in fifth position on the Premier League table, trailing City by three points in third place. With four consecutive games without a win, Tottenham faces West Ham on Thursday in their next fixture.

Haaland’s form and performance leaves Pep appreciating the €60m transfer for City’s goal-scoring machine

    Erling Haaland
has added another set of goal-scoring records to his impressive resume, prompting Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to humorously express on Tuesday that he was getting accustomed to fielding questions about his prolific striker.

In the 54th minute of the match against RB Leipzig, the 23-year-old achieved the feat of being the fastest player to score 40 goals in the Champions League, contributing to City’s 3-2 comeback victory and securing the top spot in Group G with one matchday still to go.

Just three days prior, Haaland had already made headlines by becoming the quickest player to reach 50 Premier League goals during a 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

“Again? I have to tell you again?” Guardiola laughed, when asked for comment. “A thousand million times, I’m really impressed. They won today. Another record. Congratulations. He’s a fantastic player. I tell you many times, we’re really, really pleased.

“We love him, not just for the goals he scores, but for many, many other things.

Haaland now fastest and youngest player to score 40 goals in UCL

Erling Haaland has made football history by achieving the dual distinction of being both the fastest and youngest player to score 40 goals in the Champions League, eclipsing Kylian Mbappe’s previous record.

The Norwegian phenom contributed a goal as Manchester City staged a comeback from a 2-0 deficit to triumph 3-2 against RB Leipzig, maintaining their unblemished record in this season’s premier European competition.

Haaland’s 40th goal in the Champions League came in only his 35th appearance, establishing him as the quickest player ever to reach this milestone, surpassing the previous record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy by 10 matches.

At the age of 23, Haaland also secured the title of the youngest player to reach 40 Champions League goals, breaking Mbappe’s record set in November 2022.

This remarkable achievement adds to Haaland’s week of records, having recently become the fastest player to score 50 goals in the Premier League. His goal against Liverpool in his 48th match in the English top-flight surpassed the previous mark of 65 games set by Andy Cole.

Speaking about City’s win, manager Pep Guardiola expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasising their ability to maintain high standards and consistency over the years. Looking ahead, Guardiola highlighted the significance of finishing first in the group stage to secure a favourable position in the Round of 16.

Pep Guardiola said: “Of course we are incredibly happy to have qualified with two games left. Finish first. We have time to think about it. Maybe we were not… clinical is not the right word… not clear, sweet, soft enough in the last moment to score more goals. But I love to see the team.

“The word that has defined this group of players for many years is consistency. We have high standards, and that is why we are still in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League. People say, ‘Yeah, the group stage is easy’, but you have to do it. In life, you have to do it when people expect you to do it. Two games left.

“Leipzig are the toughest opponents in this group and we have to try and finish further. It is important in the last 16 to have the weapon of second game at home rather than away.”

After helping City clinch the top spot in their group, Haaland may be allowed a rest for their final match against Crvena Zvezda in December. And the Norwegian will be looking to further boost his Premier League goal tally when the Cityzens take on title rivals Tottenham Hotspur back at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Dreams FC coach Karim Zito expresses dislike for Man City’s Pep Guardiola

Dreams FC coach Abdul Karim Zito recently disclosed that, despite his admiration for Pep Guardiola’s coaching philosophy, he doesn’t have a favourable opinion of the Manchester City coach.

Zito attributed his dislike to his strong allegiance to Spanish giants Real Madrid, which creates a natural rivalry with Guardiola, a known Barcelona supporter.

Nevertheless, Zito was swift to acknowledge his admiration for Guardiola’s notable skill in fostering and developing young players.

“The person I admire in coaching is Pep Guardiola, but I don’t like him, but I like his philosophy because of where I started my career as a developer,” he said on GPL Xpress on TV3.

“I don’t like him, maybe because I am Real Madrid; I was a Barcelona fan, but then Ronaldo left, and when he joined Real Madrid, I moved there.”

Karim Zito, the coach who led Dreams FC to victory in the FA Cup last season, also holds the position of head coach for Ghana’s U17 national team, the Black Starlets.

In a sombre turn of events, Asante Kotoko is currently in mourning following the passing of the club’s former captain, Ernest Papa Arko. The ex-striker succumbed to a brief illness in the early hours of Sunday, November 26.

Papa Arko was a notable figure at Kotoko during his prime, contributing to the team’s triumph in the African Cup of Champions Clubs (now CAF Champions League) in 1983.

He also represented the Black Stars, participating in two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

Bernado Silva poised to convince Benfica’s youngster Joao Neves into joining City instead of rivals, Man Utd

Bernardo Silva has expressed his intention to persuade his Portugal teammate, Joao Neves, to choose Manchester City over their rivals, United.

The Portuguese star is determined to convince the £105 million-rated Benfica midfielder to join City, even though Neves has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Benfica, however, is reportedly reluctant to part ways with their promising 19-year-old player during the upcoming transfer window, as he holds a release clause of €120 million (£105 million/$131 million) in his contract, which is said to have become active this summer.

Neves, a product of Benfica’s youth academy, made his senior debut for the club in 2022. In the current season, he has featured in 18 matches, contributing one goal and one assist.

Having earned his first national team call-up in October, Neves made his international debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in an international friendly.

Amid United’s search for quality midfield options due to several key players, including the sidelined Casemiro, Erik ten Hag is keen on bolstering the team’s midfield, making Neves an attractive prospect.

The outcome of this potential transfer saga could significantly impact the landscape of Manchester football.

Benjamin Mendy sues Man City over unpaid wages and unlawful deductions following his rape case

Manchester City is reportedly facing a multi-million-pound lawsuit from Benjamin Mendy over alleged unpaid wages.

The 29-year-old defender has initiated legal action by filing a claim with the Employment Tribunal, citing “unauthorised deductions from wages.”

Mendy was acquitted of single counts of rape and attempted rape in July of this year, following an earlier jury decision in January that cleared him of six alleged rapes and one attempted sexual assault.

The accusations had led to a suspension of Mendy’s football career for over two years, stemming from incidents during lockdown-busting parties at his Cheshire mansion.

Having returned to professional football with French Ligue 1 side FC Lorient just five days after his acquittal, making his debut in September, Mendy is now seeking reimbursement for unpaid wages until the conclusion of his contract, which expired in June, according to reports from Sky Sports News.

A statement from lawyer Nick De Marco KC, acting on behalf of Mendy, said: “Nick De Marco KC (instructed by Laffer Abogados (Madrid) is acting for the former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy in a multi-million-pound claim for unauthorised deductions from wages.

“Manchester City FC failed to pay Mr Mendy any wages at all from September 2021, following Mr Mendy being charged with various offences, all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023.

Benjamin Mendy’s most recent Premier League match occurred in August 2021, where Manchester City suffered a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham.

Former Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy leaves Chester Crown Court after being found not guilty on July 14, 2023 in Chester, England.

In a statement released through his solicitor after being acquitted, Mendy expressed his commitment to “rebuilding his life.”

Jenny Wiltshire, the head of serious and general crime at Hickman & Rose, acknowledged the jury’s focus on the trial’s evidence rather than the rumours and innuendo that had surrounded the case from the beginning.

“This is the second time that Mr Mendy has been tried and found not guilty by a jury.

“He is delighted that both juries reached the correct verdicts.

“It has been almost three years since the police started investigating this matter.

“Mr Mendy has tried to remain strong but the process has, inevitably, had a serious impact on him.

“He thanks everyone who has supported him throughout this ordeal and now asks for privacy so he can begin rebuilding his life.”

Haaland’s agent responds to City star’s Madrid links

Erling Haaland’s agent has chosen not to disclose the release clause in the striker’s contract, asserting that the Manchester City star is “the master of his destiny.”

The highly productive Norwegian forward scored 52 goals across all competitions last season, setting numerous records and contributing to City’s historic Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble.

His impressive performances this season have fueled speculation about potential interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

She went on to say of the transfer rumours that continue to rage: “Erling is the master of his destiny. Not just now but his entire life and 100%. What I mean is that you have to use balance. club and player. We are all in the same boat. Things have to be talked about and treated in such a way that everyone is okay. Comfortable and satisfied with the experience they have together. I think it is not necessary to say that Erling does what he wants. Is not true.

Erling is always going to do what is good for him and for his club, Manchester City. When everyone is willing to make a change, it will be done. He’s not the type of player who’s going to say, ‘I’m leaving; bye; I don’t want to know anything’. It is not like this. And it’s not going to happen because respect comes before everything. If they give it to him, he will give it too.”

Pimenta has suggested in the past that Haaland could be worth as much as €1 billion (£875m/$1bn) in the transfer market, and he has expanded on that comment by saying: “When I talk about 1 billion, I talk about a pack in which I include the years of career, the sales potential, tickets, t-shirts, sponsors, digital and everything that is coming that does not yet exist. It is impossible to say how much each thing costs. You are actually asking me how much the transfer costs and you don’t have to ask me this. The market says so.”

While Haaland is contracted with City until 2027, there have been indications that he might seek a new challenge at some point.Quizzed on whether Madrid would appeal, as the inclement weather in Manchester has escaped, Pimenta added, “Every time I go to Madrid, I ask people what it’s like to live there and they always tell me it’s great.

But in other cities, it is also good. You don’t believe me when I say it but he’s very good in Manchester. He’s fantastic. He eats well, he has everything, he has a lot of football, and the people are friendly and calm. She said of the rain in England, “But that’s a matter of taste. As a Brazilian, I do understand it. But if you come from northern Europe, it’s normal. For us, it’s a bit heavy, but not for them.”

Real Madrid, under club president Florentino Perez’s ‘Galacticos’ recruitment policy, has consistently pursued high-profile signings, and Haaland aligns well with this strategy.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Real Madrid has abandoned its enduring pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe. This shift in focus could potentially lead them to prioritize a future acquisition from Manchester City.

Video: Is Mateo Kovacic still interested in Chelsea? As he appears to celebrate Palmer’s equaliser in Chelsea-City clash

Manchester City star Mateo Kovacic seems to maintain a special connection with Chelsea, as evidenced by his celebration of a goal from Cole Palmer.

The Croatian midfielder concluded a five-year tenure at Stamford Bridge in the summer, making the move from west London to the north-west of England.

Kovacic experienced significant success in a distinct shade of blue, achieving a Champions League victory and accumulating over 200 appearances during his time at Chelsea.

Despite Mateo Kovacic’s commitment to Manchester City and his role in helping defend their Premier League title, a surprising moment occurred during his return to the Bridge on Sunday.

In a thrilling 4-4 draw where City dropped two points against Chelsea, Kovacic, standing on the edge of the box, gave a fist bump as Cole Palmer converted a stoppage-time penalty, crashing the ball into the top corner.

While it’s challenging to decipher Kovacic’s thoughts in that moment without hearing from him directly, it’s possible he was psyching himself up for the remaining time on the clock.

Chelsea fans, however, interpret his actions as a sign that he will always hold a special connection with the club.

Pep subtly jabs Arsenal while praising Chelsea’s display in draw against Man City

After Manchester City’s 4-4 draw against Chelsea, Pep Guardiola asserted that he sees Chelsea as a stronger team than Arsenal.

The clash between Chelsea and Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was a Premier League spectacle, concluding with Cole Palmer’s last-minute penalty securing a 4-4 draw for the hosts against the reigning champions.

Despite falling short of securing all three points, Guardiola expressed no regrets and praised Mauricio Pochettino’s team for their performance.

“In his evaluation, he emphasized that Chelsea surpasses Arsenal in terms of strength.

Despite currently holding the 10th position in the league standings, Pochettino’s team has displayed resilience by remaining unbeaten against three of the top four teams.

Their matches resulted in a 2-2 draw against Arsenal, an exhilarating 4-4 draw against Manchester City, and a convincing 4-1 victory over Tottenham.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Guardiola said, “They are a really good team so there’s no doubt.

Liverpool couldn’t win. They were much, much better than Arsenal and in the end, Arsenal drew. So, you know, it’s Chelsea; they won’t go away.

“I always have to think about what we can do to get better. It’s not going to happen that we come here and win 7-0. They are trying to rebuild. We have no complaints.

“We go into [the break] at the top of the league and I didn’t expect that after the Arsenal defeat. The next games are really tough.”

The Premier League is set to pause during the international break and is scheduled to resume action on November 25, kicking off with a match between Manchester City and Liverpool.

The match at Stamford Bridge exemplified why the Premier League captivates millions globally, featuring both teams exchanging leads in a thrilling contest.

With numerous twists and turns, City surrendered the lead three times, and Chelsea, in turn, squandered an advantage.

The climax was particularly dramatic as Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, facing his former club, converted a last-minute penalty, adding the ultimate twist to the encounter.

Despite missing an opportunity to extend their lead at the top, Guardiola expressed satisfaction with the classic match. By securing a point, City managed to establish a one-point lead over second-placed Liverpool in the Premier League standings.

“Did you have fun? It was a good advertisement and an entertaining game for the Premier League,” the City boss said.

“It was a tight game. Right now, I think it was a fair resuit. Both teams played to win.

“We didn’t make perfect decisions after our goal of 4-3. It is the first time for me at Stamford Bridge in many years we created that many chances, but they created as well.”

Chelsea manager Pochettino agreed with Guardiola’s assessment of the eight-goal thriller.

“We wanted to win and wanted to be protagonists in the game. A game like today shows why the Premier League is the best in the world,” he said.

Raheem Sterling then gave Chelsea the lead just before the break, slotting home Reece James’ low cross. However, City managed to equalise again in added time in the first half, with Manuel Akanji connecting a cross from Bernardo Silva.

The second half saw City take the lead once more, courtesy of Haaland tapping in Phil Foden’s pass just 90 seconds after the restart. Doku grabs two Premier League records after dispaly in Man City’s win against Bournemouth

During the summer, the newly signed player achieved a historic feat by becoming the youngest player in Premier League history, achieving five goal involvements in a single game at the age of 21 years and 161 days.

This remarkable performance came to light after he scored a goal and provided four assists in the match against Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium.

Not only did he score, but he also became the youngest player to provide four assists in a single game.

In the 30th minute, the winger found the back of the net, and he went on to set up Bernardo Silva twice, as well as Manuel Akanji and Phil Foden, contributing significantly to the Cityzens’ impressive performance.

Nathan Ake also got on the scoresheet for the team, which resulted in them taking the top position in the league table.

On the other side, Bournemouth managed to pull one goal back through Luis Sinisterra, but they currently sit in the 17th position in the league.

Doku made his move to City during the summer, transferring from Ligue 1’s Rennes for a fee of €65 million (£56m/$70m)($68.5m). While he had showcased glimpses of his quality earlier in the season, this particular game marked the moment when the Belgian international truly introduced himself to the Premier League.

  • Adebayor’s tactics part of reasons why Man City let go of Kieran Trippier

Adebayor’s tactics part of reasons why Man City let go of Kieran Trippier

Former Manchester City right-back Micah Richards has revealed some intriguing incidents at the team’s training ground during the tenure of Italian coach Roberto Mancini that led to the club approving the departure of English full-back Kieran Trippier.

Trippier, a product of the Manchester City academy, was released by the club in 2012 after a successful loan stint at Burnley.

During an episode of the Rest is Football podcast, Micah Richards suggested that Emmanuel Adebayor played a part in the club’s choice to let go of Trippier.

“I just remember in training, we were doing this session of attack versus defence; you might have four defenders versus three attackers or vice versa. He was up against Adebayor, you know Adebayor always went to the left side, held it up and did some skills or whatnot.

“Every time Adebayor got the ball, he absolutely destroyed Trippier in a one-on-one situation. The manager at the time, I think, was Mancini, but what everyone didn’t know was that the part of his game that was the best was going forward.

“They were exploiting his weaknesses and not seeing his strengths.

“When he was allowed to go to Burnley, I remember all of the lads saying this is the biggest mistake ever. Send him out on loan for a couple of seasons, and when he fills out a little bit…but the technique he had, the timing of his runs, the passing, the commitment he showed I was like, he’s going to be a top player,” he said.

Kieran Trippier’s impressive spell at Burnley in the Championship prompted Tottenham Hotspur to secure his signature. Subsequently, his career trajectory has taken him to clubs like Atletico Madrid and Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Adebayor made a notable transfer from Arsenal to Manchester City in 2012 for a substantial fee of £25 million.

  • Ten Hag says 3-0 derby loss to Man City is one of his worst days at Man Utd

Ten Hag says 3-0 derby loss to Man City is one of his worst days at Man Utd

Erik ten Hag has described Manchester United’s significant loss in the derby against Manchester City as one of his most challenging days as the manager at Old Trafford.

On Sunday, City secured a comfortable 3-0 victory, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, including a first-half penalty, and another goal coming from Phil Foden.

Ten Hag has suffered some dismal results as United manager, but when asked whether the latest defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side made it one of his worst days in the job, he said, “Yes.”

He added, “Of course, it is disappointing, but last year we had many highlights. When you lose a derby the way we lose, that is disappointing.

“First half, we had a very good game plan and the execution was also very good. It was toe-to-toe first and it was very similar, but then the penalty changed the moment. Then, in the second half, we chose to become more offensive and it is 2-0 too quickly. From that point on it was a difficult game.”

It is now seven defeats from 14 games in all competitions this season but Ten Hag said he is confident his team is making progress.

“The three games before we won and the spirit is very good,” Ten Hag said. “I think we are on the way up. The start was difficult but now we are on the way up. When injuries are getting back, we will be getting stronger. We have to be patient but I am happy with some injuries coming back and then our side will be stronger.”

Later, Ten Hag reaffirmed his choice to relegate Raphaël Varane and Sergio Reguilón to the bench in favour of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf.

He also defended his decision to substitute striker Rasmus Højlund during the second half, even though the substitution was met with loud jeers from the Manchester United fans at Old Trafford.

“I have to protect Rasmus Højlund and I have to protect the team,” Ten Hag added.

“He is putting so much effort into pressing, going through the transitions, going the long way, and fighting a tough opposition.

“He is not used to it—three games in a week—so I have to protect him and the team to bring some energy in. We have bench players Mason Mount and [Alejandro] Garnacho; we know he can change games.”

  • Haaland and Foden lead Man City to Man United derby victory

Haaland and Foden lead Man City to Man United derby victory

Manchester City delivered a brilliant performance to secure a 3-0 victory over Manchester United, marking their best showing of the season so far. Erling Haaland initiated City’s success by converting a first-half penalty, though it hardly reflected their dominance.

Haaland netted his second with a header just after the halftime break, and he later set up Phil Foden for a late third goal. This comprehensive win was well-deserved for the Treble winners, as they put on a remarkable 90-minute display against their cross-city rivals.

Before kickoff, an emotional tribute was paid to Sir Bobby Charlton, with City representatives Mike Summerbee and Tony Book, along with Brian Kidd who played for both Manchester clubs, warmly welcomed onto the pitch. A minute’s applause reverberated through Old Trafford in his honor.

The game commenced with City initially appearing somewhat disjointed but eventually finding their rhythm, nearly taking the lead in the eighth minute. A lofted pass from Rodrigo found Kyle Walker in the box, whose header met Phil Foden, only for Andre Onana to save the header. Haaland attempted to connect with his foot but couldn’t, and United managed to clear the danger.

United’s strategy was to get numbers behind the City midfield, and their counter-attacks were often threatening, with City’s defense outnumbered on several occasions.

City’s next notable effort was a curling shot by Jack Grealish in the 20th minute, which Onana pushed around the post. City continued to press, and Foden earned a free-kick 35 yards from goal.

As Julian Alvarez’s cross entered the box, Rodrigo appeared to be pulled back by Rasmus Hojlund. Referee Paul Tierney paused the game for a VAR check and concluded that Rodrigo had been fouled, awarding City a penalty. Haaland stepped up and, despite facing criticism from the Stretford End, calmly sent Onana the wrong way to make it 1-0. This was City’s first penalty at Old Trafford since 1992.

The rest of the half saw United largely pinned back in their final third as City dominated possession, with Rodrigo playing a pivotal role.

United had an excellent opportunity to level the score just before half-time as Scott McTominay unleashed a powerful rising shot from the edge of the box, but Ederson made a superb save.

City should have been two or three goals ahead by half-time, but their lead was only 1-0.

United began the second half aggressively, with Bruno Fernandes testing Ederson with a swerving drive. A few minutes later, City extended their lead to 2-0. A purposeful break led to Alvarez finding Grealish on the left, who then delivered a pinpoint cross for Haaland to head home.

Grealish almost added another goal but was denied by Onana, who saved his shot. City continued to dominate, and United struggled to mount a threat.

On 69 minutes, United had a rare attack, with Marcus Rashford missing a chance to score as he sent an angled shot wide. Grealish also had an opportunity to extend City’s lead, but Onana made a crucial save.

City secured the win with a third goal in the 80th minute. Haaland selflessly set up Foden, who calmly flicked the ball into the net. United players received several late bookings as City displayed a statement performance in the rainy Manchester weather.

Overall, it was a vibrant and outstanding 90 minutes from Guardiola’s side.
