Rice’s departure from East London appears imminent, having led his team to victory in the UEFA Europa Conference League with a late goal from Jarrod Bowen in the 119th minute.
Despite Arsenal’s two unsuccessful bids of around £90 million for the highly valued midfielder, they remain steadfast in their demand for £110 million as the minimum acceptable offer before considering any transfer.
DiMarzio reports that the Citizens have moved ahead of the Gunners, whom they beat to the Premier League title, after lodging an official bid with a total package meeting the player’s valuation.
Rice’s conditions to join City
The player is believed to prefer Arsenal despite City’s offer to West Ham, as he prefers to remain in London because of his family.
Daily Star reports that he has laid down three conditions – which are tied to his role in the team, before agreeing to join the Premier League champions.
The 24-year-old sought assurances he has a long-term role at the club and that he will be an immediate starter and not be slowly integrated like his compatriot Jack Grealish, who joined for £100m from Aston Villa two years ago.
The last and possibly the most difficult request is seeking to know if Pep Guardiola will be at the club beyond the end of his current contract, which expires in 2025.
NBC Sports reported that the manager told the club insiders he would leave when his contract expires. The Spaniard could have been out of contract this summer but extended by two years during the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.
Musiala heaps praise on Rice
Sports Brief reported that German youngster Jamal Musiala heaped praise on Rice as a great player after Bayern Munich withdrew their interest due to the fee and the player’s preference to remain in England.
Musiala knew the England international from their days at Chelsea Academy in Cobham, even though they were in different age groups.
Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has received a lucrative offer to join the Saudi Pro League, and talks have already been held according to the Athletic.
However, Silva intends to turn down the opportunity.
Despite his rejection, the Saudi clubs remain determined in their pursuit of high-profile signings this summer.
It is reported that Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Edouard Mendy are also poised to join SPL clubs, while Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo have already made the move.
Silva is under contract with Man City until 2025, but has been strongly linked with a move away.
Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are both reportedly interested and the midfielder would prefer to continue to ply his trade in Europe.
Barcelona were interested in signing Silva in January but couldn’t raise the €70 million needed, while Man City were reluctant to part ways while the season was ongoing.
He played a vital role inManchester City’s treble-winning campaign last season, featuring 55 times across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and eight assists.
Manchester City defender Kyle Walker is keen on a permanent move to Bayern Munich according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Deutschland.
Advanced discussions are said to be taking place between Walker and the German champions.
After spending six years at Manchester City, the 33-year-old reportedly wishes to leave the club in the summer.
This decision comes following a challenging season for Walker, where he struggled to secure regular playing time under manager Pep Guardiola.
Walker was not included in the starting lineup for Manchester City’s Champions League final victory against Inter Milan, as Manuel Akanji was preferred instead.
This situation has made the English international open to the possibility of a transfer.
The report reveals that whilst Manchester City and Bayern Munich have not yet reached an agreement, all parties are optimistic that a deal can be reached, with Bayern’s head coach Thomas Tuchel proving to be vital in convincing Walker to join the Bavarian club.
The Premier League champions will be eager to offload Walker this summer to ensure he does not depart on a free transfer next year, with the right-back having just one year remaining on his current deal.
Walker has also been linked with a return to his boyhood club Sheffield United, however, this now looks unlikely, with the Blades unable to offer Champions League football.
Haaland stresses the importance of getting some sun as soon as he wakes up, while he wears special glasses which filter out blue light to help him sleep.
During Manchester City’s Champions League celebrations,Kevin De Bruyne caused confusion among fans as he was seen wearing a Sheffield Wednesday kit.
City achieved a remarkable treble on Saturday, June 10, by claiming the European trophy for the first time in the club’s history in Istanbul.
In the final against Inter Milan, City emerged as European champions with a 1-0 victory. According to BBC, Rodri’s goal in the second half proved to be the decisive factor in securing the historic win.
The victory sparked wild celebrations from the Man City camp that later spilled over into the dressing room.
De Bruyne in Sheffield kit
But one peculiar thing from the celebrations that left fansconfused was De Bruyne’s decision to sport a Sheffield Wednesday kit.
While everyone else was donning Man City attire, the Belgian playmaker opted for the second-tier side’s shirt from the ’90s.
The Mirror claims that the midfielder may have worn the shirt due to his wife’s ties with the club.
The publication claims De Bruyne’s wife, Michele, is good friends with the partner of former Wednesday captain, Glenn Loovens, so much so that Loovens was spotted in Istanbul interacting with Man City fans during the final.
Inside Man City’s celebrations
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Manchester City stars were on cloud nine as they celebrated their Champions League triumph on Saturday night.
Jack Grealish led the celebrations, which spilt over into a nightclub, with the Englishman spotted downing a few cans of booze.
On his part, Erling Haaland toasted his fine season with a cigar.Kevin De Bruyne, who hobbled off with an injury in the first half, joined his teammates for the celebrations.
Towards the end of the match, Inzaghi, known for his intense and emotional presence on the touchline, ventured onto the pitch in an attempt to motivate his team to score a late equalizer.
He had to be reminded to return to his designated area by the officials.
The match, held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, was a closely contested affair, with Inter Milan impressing many by successfully keeping Pep Guardiola’s side at bay for significant periods of the game.
Inzaghi, a cup final specialist, was finally broken by a Rodri strike from inside the area in the 68th minute.
The Nerazzuri failed to get back into the game, with Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku particularly guilty of missing decent opportunities.
Inzaghi’s on-field actions
With Inter Milan’s last opportunity of the game, Inzaghi literally got into the pitch and beckoned his goalkeeper Andre Onana to come forward for the last corner kick of the game.
A member of his technical staff rushed to ask him to retreat and the 47-year-old did not take the gesture kindly before he heeded to the call and stepped out. Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson ended up saving the resultant corner kick as the Premier League champions finally won their first European title.
Inzaghi speaks after Champions League final
Sports Brief also reported that Inter Milan manager Simeone Inzaghi has opened up following his side’s loss to Manchester City in the final of the UEFA Champions League on Saturday night.
The Spaniard made this decision after guiding City to an unprecedented treble during the recently finished 2022–23 season.
After their city rivals, Man United, the Citizens won three significant trophies under Guardiola, becoming just the second Premier League club to do so.
According to The Sun, the English powerhouses defeated Arsenal to win the league title with three games remaining before defeating Manchester United in the FA Cup final to add to their collection of trophies.
City went on to win the Champions League for the first time in their history on Saturday night after silencing Italian giants, Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul in the final of the tournament.
Guardiola to quit Man City
Having won almost every available trophy at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola has reportedly decided to end his career at Man City within the next few years.
The 52-year-old has an active contract with the Manchester club that will expire in 2025, having penned a renewal of his deal back in November 2021.
According to The Guardian, the former Barcelona boss has decided he will not continue at the club once the deal expires.
Guardiola has enjoyed an illustrious career at City since he joined them from Bayern Munich in 2016. An incredible five Premier League titles and a couple of domestic titles are among the honours he has won for the club.
Guardiola receives message from Fergie
Sports Brief also reported onMan City boss, Guardiola revealing the touching message he received from Sir Alex Ferguson before winning a historic treble.
Emulating the legendary Man United manager, the Citizens added the UCL title to the Premier League and FA Cup by beating Inter Milan 1-0 on Saturday night.
Haaland enjoyed an outstanding debut season in the Premier League with Manchester City, breaking several records due to his exceptional goal-scoring abilities.
As reported by GiveMeSport, the Borussia Dortmund star netted an astonishing 52 goals in all competitions, with 36 of them coming in the Premier League.
Twelve of the goals were scored in the UEFA Champions League, with the tally helping the youngster win Golden Boots in both competitions.
Haaland seeks Henry’s advice
However, it seems he wants to hit higher milestones next season and decided to seek advice from Henry, one of the most successful Premier League players.
— CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) June 11, 2023
In a video shared by CBS Sports, Haaland is heard asking Henry to share with him any tips he may be having to help him improve.
“If you’d like to give me one [piece of] advice, what would it be?” Haaland posed.
Henry responded:
“I said on air that in the box, there is nothing you can learn – what you do is second to none. But… back to the goal, going on to your right sometimes and making some runs that you don’t want to go… there’s some stuff that you can learn.”
“If he starts to go on his right and finishing with his right, the same run he makes on his left, it’s over. He will score 100 goals per week,” Henry added.
The father of Enzo Maresca, an assistant coach for Manchester City, has been located after going missing during the Champions League final in Istanbul.
The father of Maresca was among the City fans who travelled to the Ataturk Stadium to watch the Premier League powerhouses when they faced Inter Milan.
The old man was reported missing, though, during the game, according to The Mirror, which prompted a hasty search for him.
It is believed that Maresca, who has established himself as Guardiola’s right-hand man, was notified of his father’s abduction and made an effort to call him.
An announcement was made on the ground for Maresca’s father to make himself known to the nearest steward, with the message also shown on the big screens inside the stadium.
After hours of searching, he is understood to have finally been found safe and sound, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that he was located in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Who is Enzo Maresca?
Maresca has built a reputation for himself as Pep Guardiola’s right-hand man, with the tactician among the people behind the scenes of Man City’s success.
The 43-year-old started off his football career as a player, plying his trade with West Brom and Juventus, where he won the Serie A.
He later transitioned into management, initially taking up a role with Man City’s development squad.
He went on to take charge of Parma in Serie B before he joined City’s backroom staff last summer after Juanma Lillo departed for a managerial role in Saudi Arabia.
The tactician has since been linked with the vacant Celtic and Leicester City roles.
Inter legend misses Istanbul trip
Earlier, it was reported that Inter Milan cult hero, Adriano missed the chance to cover the Champions League final in Istanbul because he was partying, according to reports.
Adriano is a familiar name among Inter fans, as the Brazilian had some memorable moments as a Nerazzuri in the early 2000s.
Because of his legendary status at Inter, it only made sense that he was invited to be a pundit for the final, where his former side came up against Manchester City on Saturday, June 10.
Isabel Johansen, the girlfriend of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, experienced immense joy and celebration as she marked her partner’s triumph in the Champions League on Saturday, June 10.
Manchester City secured their first-ever Champions League title with a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan, courtesy of a goal scored by Rodri in the second half.
This achievement also completed a treble for manager Pep Guardiola this season, making him the first coach to accomplish this feat with two different clubs, having previously done so with Barcelona in 2009.
Following the game, Johansen was captured in photos alongside Haaland, and social media images showcased her radiant presence adorned with a Norwegian flag during the festive celebrations.
More photos showed the couple posing alongside the Champions League trophy, with families of theManchester City players being invited to join in the on-pitch celebrations.
Also in the stands was Haaland’s dad Alfie, who spent 10 seasons with Manchester City before the club became the force that many fans know of today.
The moment that warmed many fans on social media was when Johansen caught up to Haaland, who was seated on a chair in the middle of the pitch, before wrapping the flag around the striker and seemingly locking lips with him.
Haaland then showed the gentle side of him as he offered Johansen his seat soon after.
19-year old Johansen is reported to have moved from Norway to Manchester, England to be closer to Haaland.
The couple met through the sport of football when they were still children after Haaland joined Norwegian side Bryne FK at just five years old.
Haaland’s dream debut season
In terms of his football, Haaland has had a season to remember at Manchester City in his very first year in England.
As per Transfermkt, the Norwegian scored 52 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions, winning a treble and individual awards along the way, including the Premier League Golden Boot and Player of The Season.
Inside Man City’s treble celebrations
Sports Brief also took a glimpse of Manchester City’s treble celebrations amongst the different players on Saturday evening.
Grealish, who led his teammates, friends and family to a nightclub, was caught on camera downing a few cans of booze.
On his part, Erling Haaland toasted his fine season with a cigar, with Kevin De Bruyne, who hobbled off with an injury in the first half, joining his teammates for celebration.
The final of the 2022/2023 European football season was marked by the UEFA Champions League final held in Istanbul.
This season proved to be physically demanding for all involved, as it featured a packed schedule, including a significant break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
In a tightly contested match at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, a decisive goal came from Rodri of Manchester City.
His superb curling shot from inside the penalty area secured victory against Inter Milan, allowing Manchester City to achieve a historic treble.
Considering the significance of both the World Cup and the Champions League, it is evident that these tournaments will play a vital role in determining the recipient of the highly coveted individual accolade in football, the Ballon d’Or.
It is set to be a two-horse race for the 2023 award. Sports Brief takes a look at how the vote would possibly go later this year in October.
6. Ilkay Gundogan
Should we call him Mr. Clutch instead? Gundogan’s late bloom to win the Premier League and the FA Cup for Manchester City in his first season as captain has seen his odds rise immensely.
He is definitely bettered by De Bruyne and Haaland in his own team, but his 13 goals and seven goals – especially towards the end of the season – cannot go unmentioned.
Ilkay Gundogan
He joins only a few captains to have captained their sides to winning a treble.
5. Vinicius Junior
It is a good thing the Ballon d’Or award does not account for only the kind of trophies won, but also individual performances as well.
The Real Madrid goal machine finished the season with the Copa Del Rey, the Club World Club, and the UEFA Super Cup.

He is the only player in Europe’s top 5 leagues to have scored at least 20 goals (24) and provided at least 20 assists (25) in all competitions, bar Lionel Messi.
4. Kylian Mbappe
If Messi will dominate this debate because of the World Cup, then his soon-to-be former teammate at Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappe deserves a shout as well – and with good reason.
The Frenchman was unlucky not to win the December 18 final at the Qatar World Cup despite a historic performance that saw him grab a hat-trick. He missed out on the trophy but won the Golden Boot.
Kylian Mbappe
He has also scored 53 goals and provided 14 assists this season in all competitions, on top of winning the Ligue 1.
3. Kevin De Bruyne
The Belgian heartbreakingly limped off in the UCL final – the second such time he has been forced off injured in the last game of a tournament.

The 31-year-old remains the most elite playmaker in Europe, having provided 32 assists in all competitions.
2. Lionel Messi
Captaining his country and starring at the World Cup at 35 years, finally winning the trophy that eluded him in his illustrious career, saw Messi complete a romantic football moment.
After the Qatar triumph, it looked like he was a stroll for his record eighth Ballon d’Or title, only for Haaland’s heroics in that Manchester City super team to turn a solid argument into a debate.
Messi back in training with PSG after Saudi trip suspension and fine
Apart from the World Cup, the Argentine has also scored 38 times and provided 25 assists in all competitions.
1. Erling Haaland
Between the Champions League and the World Cup, the latter understandably carries more weight. However, the Man City striker has closed the gap on the serial winner, Messi in recent months after the Qatar event.
The 22-year-old might have been silent in the UCL final, but his 53 goals across all competitions helped the Citizens complete the historic treble, with the crowning moment coming in Turkey on June 10.
Erling Haaland has starred in his first season at Manchester City
The last time a player from the Premier League won the Ballon d’Or was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008, after success in the UCL with Manchester United – an occurence Haaland has now replicated with Manchester City.
Could the Norwegian land his first Ballon d’Or at just 22 years of age – it seems so.
Other 2023 Ballon d’Or candidates
Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s respective roles in Napoli’s title-winning season will surely hand them a place in the final top 10 places.
Lautaro Martinez did not play a big role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph but delivered in Inter Milan’s run to the Istanbul final and winning a domestic double.
His international teammate, Julian Alvarez, having won the treble with Man City plus the 2022 World Cup, will also feature among the top-ranked players.
Robert Lewandowski suffered an unfamiliar early exit from the Champions League this term but still won another Golden Boot award, this time in a different league.
Reigning holder, Karim Benzema failed to inspire another European success for Real Madrid, but his 31 goals before joining Al-Ittihad will put him in good standing.
The list of the nominees for this year’s Ballon d’Or awards will be announced on September 6, with the winners being announced at a gala in Paris on October 30.
Biggest Ballon d’Or robberies in history
It was also reported on the decision to hold the 2022 World Cup in the ‘weird’ month of December brought about unprecedented debate ahead of the 2023 Ballon d’Or race.
In a hard-fought final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on Saturday, Manchester City secured Champions League glory and completed the treble with a narrow 1-0 victory over Inter Milan.
Rodri, the midfielder, became the hero by firing home the winning goal in the 68th minute.
Despite losing Kevin De Bruyne to injury in the first half, City persevered and wore down the resilient Italian side.
Inter successfully contained the prolific Erling Haaland, but it was Rodri who finally broke through the defense with a powerful strike after receiving a deflected pass from Bernardo Silva.
— UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) June 10, 2023
It capped a momentous season for City having also won the FA Cup as well as a fifth Premier League title in six years. Their success means they also join rivals Manchester United as the only side to have won all three of those trophies in the same season.
It meant mission accomplished for owner Sheikh Mansour, who was present in Istanbul at only his second match since purchasing the club in 2008 and subsequently propelling them to the game’s top table.
Manager Pep Guardiola could also celebrate Champions League success again 12 years after the second of his two wins as Barcelona boss.
City had gone into the match as strong favourites but Inter proved more than a match, setting out with a determination to soak up pressure.
It made for a slow start and City lacked their usual sparkle.
That gave Inter confidence and Federico Dimarco sparked a threatening attack after seizing possession but Marcelo Brozovic’s shot was deflected wide.
Ederson also seemed nervous and misplaced a pass that handed Nicolo Barella a long-range sight of goal. Fortunately for the Brazilian, Barella’s effort was nowhere near the target.
Haaland had his first attempt after being played in by De Bruyne but Andre Onana blocked his first-time shot.
De Bruyne tried his luck himself from distance but his effort lacked power and his final was, once again, to end in frustration soon after.
The Belgian went down clutching his hamstring 10 minutes before the interval and, despite attempts to run off the problem, was forced to admit defeat soon after and was replaced by Phil Foden.
It meant further Champions League final woe for De Bruyne after he left the field with a facial injury during City’s loss to Chelsea two years ago.
The opening stages of the second half followed a similar pattern but Inter eventually started to assert themselves more and they began to look dangerous.
City had a let-off just before the hour when Manuel Akanji reacted slowly to a Silva pass and Lautaro Martinez charged into the box. Former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was well placed in the centre but Martinez opted to shoot and Ederson smothered his effort.
City made the most of that reprieve and took the lead moments after a John Stones cross was deflected close to his own goal by Alessandro Bastoni.
Akanji played the key pass as he picked out Silva and his cutback eventually fell to Rodri, who thumped the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
City fans greeted the strike with a mixture of celebration and relief but they were given a scare minutes later when Dimarco hit the bar with a looping header and then headed against Lukaku on the rebound.
Foden had a chance to put City in firm control when he burst through a gap into the area but Onana got down well to save.
City survived a late scare when a Lukaku header hit Ederson’s legs and was put behind by Ruben Dias and the final whistle was greeted by jubilant celebrations.
City will now begin the 2023/24 season with an opportunity to play in the European Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time, as well having the chance to become the first team in the history of English football to win four league titles in succession.
During a press conference held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Friday, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne openly confessed that winning the Champions League is not only a long-standing dream but also an overwhelming obsession for the club.
Having established their dominance in domestic competitions in recent years, City now finds themselves on the brink of achieving an unprecedented treble as they prepare to face Inter Milan in the final in Istanbul on Saturday.
However, their relentless pursuit of Europe’s most prestigious trophy has so far eluded them, adding to the club’s burning desire to secure it.
Speaking about the upcoming final, both Guardiola and De Bruyne emphasized the significance of the Champions League and its immense importance to Manchester City.
They acknowledged the club’s relentless pursuit and unwavering determination to lift the coveted trophy for the first time.
De Bruyne was asked first if he felt victory was a “dream” or an “obsession”.
The Belgium international said: “Maybe both. It depends who you ask. Every professional player wants to win the Champions League and be on top.
“If you can win the Champions League, you’ve reached one of the biggest things you can.”
Guardiola was in agreement when asked the same question.
The Catalan, who guided Barcelona to victory in the competition twice, has taken City into the knockout stages seven times but their runner-up finish in 2021 is the closest they have come to success.
“Absolutely it’s a dream,” he said. “To achieve things you have to have correct portion of obsession and desire, it’s a positive word, and willingness to try to do it, but of course it’s a dream.”
Carlos Puyol, a former Barcelona defender who won the Champions League three times during his career, has showered praise on Erling Haaland ahead of the final on Saturday.
Puyol, 45, considers Haaland to be a once-in-a-generation talent.
As Haaland and his Manchester City teammates set their sights on a Treble by facing Inter Milan in Istanbul, Puyol’s admiration for the young striker is evident.
Speaking to Laureus Spirit of Sport, he said: “I think he’s a really complete player who will define an era.
“If had to play against him, and if I was 100%, I would have loved it.
“I enjoyed playing against the best. I’d analyse him very well to try and find areas where he’s less strong.
“He’s a real predator in the box. I love him, he’s so big, it’s really tough to mark him and you’d have to analyse it well and work as a team.
“In the air, you have to time it right, jump well. But he’s so powerful so tall. But we would give it a good go!”
Puyol also highlighted the supreme qualities of City boss Pep Guardiola.
Having both played with and under the Catalan tactician, he knows first-hand of Guardiola’s attention to detail.
Puyol explained: “For me, if not the best, he’s certainly among the top two or three coaches of all time.
“He transformed our football, starting with the goalkeeper.
“Then, having such an attacking side, you had to be very aware as a defender, he was always very hot on that.
“Many people really focus on how Pep’s teams play, but I think the difference really lies in how they defend, their reaction when they lose the ball. That’s what really stood out for me about Pep.
“We really had a fantastic defence. It was a complete, committed side. We all knew our roles very well, what we had to do, and we all worked together to achieve our goals.”
Sergio Aguero, Manchester City’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 260 goals in 390 appearances, has disclosed his plans for watching the Champions League final against Inter Milan on Saturday.
Despite leaving the club, Aguero expressed his strong desire to be present for such a significant game and will be seated among the traveling City supporters, surrounded by the people he holds closest to his heart.
“I’ll be in Istanbul and I wouldn’t miss this game for anything in the world,” said Aguero.
“This time, I’ll be one more among a sea of City fans – cheering for the team along with the rest of the crowd. I can’t wait.”
During his time at Manchester City, Sergio Aguero established himself as a prolific scorer in the UEFA Champions League. With a remarkable tally of 39 goals in the competition, Aguero holds the record for the most Champions League goals scored by a Manchester City player.
In his first Champions League appearance for the club against Napoli in September 2011, which was just his fifth game for City after joining from Atletico Madrid, Aguero showcased his talent on the European stage.
Throughout his City career, Aguero delivered several memorable performances in Europe.
Notably, he scored a dramatic last-minute winner against Villarreal, recorded a memorable hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich, and etched his name in City’s history by netting his 178th goal for the club against Napoli in 2017, solidifying his status as the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer.
Aguero’s contributions in the UEFA Champions League will always be remembered as significant highlights of his time at Manchester City.
Asked if he was feeling nervous ahead of the game, he said: “A tiny bit, sure, but I’m also very confident in the team.
“They’ve played a magnificent season, and this is the last step for a crowning finish.
“When I see the team, I see a consolidated game plan and very solid performance across all levels.
“This is football, and anything can happen – that being said, I think we’ve gotten here with the right momentum to get the result we’ve been looking for.”
As an Argentina legend, Kun is also fascinated to see two of his compatriots potentially go head-to-head in Istanbul with World Cup-winning duo Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez both likely to feature at some stage.
“It’s a great pride to have two major Argentine players in the Champions League final,” he said.
“We’ve seen the brilliant season Julian has had, with positive notes in every direction.
“I’ve always said it’s not easy to adapt to your first season in Europe when you have come from South America, but even so, Julian was able to perform excellently and stay up to the level demanded by a club like City.
“He’s scored crucial goals, adopted the team’s style, and showed nothing but commitment.
“There’s many joys to come for City thanks to Julian, I believe.”
“As for Lautaro, after the World Cup, he’s had a very important part to play for Inter and he’s a key member of the team.
“It’d be great to see him play with Julian at the same time – but I cannot be neutral in this case. I hope City and Julian win this game, that’s what we’ve all been waiting for.”
And Aguero admits he couldn’t be happier for his old friend and former strike partner Edin Dzeko to be playing in such a huge game at the age of 37.
“It does make me really glad,” he said. “He deserves it. He’s an amazing player and a great human being, too.
“I can’t help looking back to the goal he scored against QPR in 2012 – that made turning the tables possible in such an important match.
“Edin remains a dangerous player with a will to score at any moment. I’m not surprised he’s been able to perform so well this season.”
Finally, how does he see the match going? Can City finally win a first Champions League title?
“It’ll be tough, I know that much,” said Kun.
“Reaching the Champions League final is no easy feat. Inter have earned their place for a reason.
“They have a consistently solid defence, they fight tooth-and-nail in the midfield, and their attack is versatile – with the possibilities afforded by Lautaro, Edin and Romelu Lukaku.
“It’s important to leave favouritism aside when we get to this stage… but City have arrived with great confidence.
“The lads know what they need to do on the field and that gets my hopes up. The team has fought long and hard to achieve this title for a long time.
“I hope this is it and that’s why I wouldn’t miss this game for the world.”
Inter Milan manager, Simone Inzaghi, is confident as he prepares his team to face Manchester City in the Champions League final on Saturday.
Inzaghi believes that Inter Milan will be up against “the strongest team in the world” but has urged his players not to be intimidated by the challenge.
Manchester City, who have already secured the English double, are considered the favorites to win the prestigious title and complete a historic Treble. However, Inzaghi remains optimistic and hopes to replicate the success of the Inter Milan team that won the Champions League in 2010.
— UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) June 5, 2023
The 47-year-old head coach said: “I know we’ll meet the strongest team in the world at the moment. We face the best.
“We’re talking about a football match and with all due respect, I’m not afraid of anything.
“Guardiola is the best coach in the world and he has marked an era. We have respect, but we are proud to play in this final that we wanted with all our strength.
“It will be the last of 57 matches in which even the much-talked-about defeats have allowed us to get to where we will be on Saturday.”
Asked if the game would be the biggest of his illustrious career, Inzaghi added: “Yes it is, for me and for my players.
“[Andre] Onana and [Edin] Dzeko have played in the semi-finals, but nobody has ever made it to the final. It pays us back for all the efforts made throughout the year.”
Much of the focus in the build-up to the game has centred on the threat posed to Inter’s hopes by 52-goal City striker Erling Haaland, even though the Norway international has scored only once in his last seven appearances.
Inzaghi, who revealed he had unexpectedly bumped into Guardiola at a New York hotel during his honeymoon in 2019, said: “Haaland said City bought him to win the Champions League, but City isn’t just Haaland; they have numerous players who can put us in trouble.
“[Real Madrid’s Antonio] Rudiger managed to stop him very well in the semi-final and we’ll try to take our cue from that.”
That was a theme taken up by defender Alessandro Bastoni, who warned his team-mates not to ignore the danger posed by Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne in particular.
Bastoni said: “City bought Haaland to win the Champions League, but they also have Bernardo [Silva] and [Kevin] De Bruyne who can put us in trouble.
“I watched a video of how Rudiger stopped Haaland and we will try to do the same. But it’s not Inter against Haaland, it’s Inter against City.”
Inzaghi remained coy over his team selection, insisting he has yet to make a decision over whether to start Dzeko or Romelu Lukaku in attack, adding: “A coach can have ideas, but maybe he changes his mind at the last second.”
Pep Guardiola said in advance of the final, which City won 2-1 against Manchester United to secure the second leg of a possible treble, that he had attended John’s concert in the city last week as he sought to take his mind off a defining period in the club’s history.
The club’s Twitter feed headed one of the videos “you can tell everybody we have won the FA Cup”, a reference to a line from the 1971 hit Your Song.
City were victorious at Wembley thanks to a goal in either half from Ilkay Gundogan – his first the fastest in FA Cup final history – as they added the trophy to the Premier League title they won in May.
They face Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Istanbul on Saturday seeking to become only the second English club afterManchester United to have won all three major trophies in a single season.
Pep Guardiola is of the opinion that preventingManchester City from achieving a treble could serve as added motivation for Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
In a highly anticipated clash between the two neighboring rivals at Wembley on Saturday, there is more than just a trophy and local bragging rights on the line.
For City, who have already secured the Premier League title, a victory in the FA Cup final would be a crucial step towards a potential triumphant treble, with the Champions League final scheduled for the following week.
United on the other hand – as the only side to have won all three of those competitions in the same season, back in 1999 – will be anxious to stop them and protect their place in history.
City manager Guardiola said: “I could understand that. It belongs to them, that’s normal. Sport is like that.
“’That belongs to us – we don’t want anyone else to do it,’ it’s normal, that feeling. It’s completely understandable. But it’s a football game, who will be better will win.”
The Dutchman has enjoyed an encouraging first season at Old Trafford having won the Carabao Cup and reclaimed a Champions League spot.
“I know what is the thinking from the fans,” Ten Hag said.
“But what we want is to restore Manchester United by winning trophies. We have an opportunity to win a trophy and we don’t want to be distracted by anything.
“If it’s important for the fans then it’s important for us, so we will give everything to win the cup.”
Guardiola insists the treble is not part of his thinking yet. He has spent the week preparing to face United and will switch focus to playing Inter Milan in Istanbul next week.
“We didn’t speak once about Inter these days,” he said. “We’ll have Sunday off, and after we’ll have three or four days training.
“We’ll introduce what we believe Inter are, to try to beat them, then. We have time. Saturday to Saturday is a long time to prepare for a game.
“United and the FA Cup deserve the full attention and commitment. The players are completely aware of that.”
City could have a fully-fit squad with Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji, who all missed last week’s game at Brentford, having since returned to training.
Guardiola has confirmed second-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will start, as he has in all domestic cup fixtures this season.
United are without striker Anthony Martial due to a hamstring injury and winger Antony is also a major doubt.
UEFA, the governing body for football in Europe, has initiated an investigation into referee Szymon Marciniak following his interaction with a far-right politician ahead of the Champions League final.
Marciniak, who is scheduled to officiate the Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan on June 10, may potentially be removed from his position pending the outcome of the investigation.
Marciniak, a Polish referee, has previously overseen significant matches, including the World Cup final between Argentina and France, as well as Manchester City’s Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.
The Athletic reports that Marciniak was seen talking to Slawomir Mentzen – the leader of the Confederation Party who is known for his anti-Semitic and homophobic positions – at a networking event.
“We stand against Jews, gays, taxation, and the European Union,” Mentzen controversially said during an event in 2019.
He also released the White IPA beer that is said to mock the Black Lives Matter movement.
In a statement, UEFA said it was aware of the allegations and further promised to provide a way forward after looking at all the facts.
“UEFA and the whole football community abhor the ‘values’ that are promoted by the group in question and takes these allegations very seriously. A further announcement will be made tomorrow, after reviewing all the evidence,” the football body stated, as quoted by the Guardian.
The event is said to have taken place on May 29, with Marciniak’s Facebook fan page sharing photos of him from the event.
Mourinho’s feud with Anthony Taylor
In what is proving to be a difficult week for UEFA referees, Sports Brief also reported on Jose Mourinho hurling obscenities at referee, Anthony Taylor after AS Roma lost the Europa League final to Sevilla on May 31.
The Portuguese tactician was far from happy with some of the decisions made by the English referee, who has had a number of run-ins with the Special one in the past during his time as manager in the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has been honored as the Manager of the Year by the League Managers Association.
This recognition comes as Guardiola led City to their third consecutive Premier League title and is currently pursuing a historic Treble.
It is his third time receiving the prestigious Sir Alex Ferguson trophy and he has also been named the Premier League Manager of the Year.
With important matches ahead, including the FA Cup final against Manchester United and the Champions League final against Inter Milan, Guardiola’s managerial prowess and strategic abilities have been acknowledged by his peers in the industry.
Pep Guardiola, who previously won the award in the 2017-18 and 2020-21 seasons, expressed his joy upon receiving the Manager of the Year accolade, stating, “I’m thrilled to receive the Manager of the Year award. It’s an incredible honor to be presented with this trophy. We compete in the best league in the world, and I assure you, we will be there next season.”
The nominations for the award included Mikel Arteta (Arsenal head coach), Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton), Eddie Howe (Newcastle), Unai Emery (Aston Villa boss), and Marco Silva (Fulham). However, it was Guardiola who emerged as the deserving recipient.
In the Championship category, Vincent Kompany was recognized for his achievement of guiding Burnley straight back to promotion to the top flight. He triumphed over fellow nominees Michael Carrick (Middlesbrough), Paul Heckingbottom (Sheffield United), Rob Edwards (Luton), and Mark Robins (Coventry) to claim the Championship award.
Kompany said: “The players have done it and the staff have been relentless.
“I can still relate to the players, I feel connected to what they are going through. I make mistakes and don’t see myself as the finished article. You make mistakes and learn. I’m pretty pleased where I am today.”
Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher took the League One award after guiding the Pilgrims to the title and Richie Wellens was voted League Two manager of the year after leading Leyton Orient to the top of the fourth tier.
Chelsea’s Emma Hayes won the Women’s Super League award with Lauren Smith honoured in the Championship after leading Bristol City to the title.
This conversation between Guardiola and Neymar comes shortly after news surfaced indicating that Manchester United could be among the clubs expressing interest in acquiring the winger’s services.
Neymar had an exceptional individual season in France before his involvement was hindered by an ankle injury, cutting short his further participation.
Neymar suffered ankle injury in 2023
PSG were then eliminated from the Champions League, provoking angry reactions from the club’s ultras, who have now demanded that Neymar and Lionel Messi leave the club.
While Messi will be a free agent,Neymar remains contracted until 2027 and it remains to be seen if the French side will want to cash in on him.
As L’Euipe reports, Guardiola checked in on the 31-year-old, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Manchester City will move in for him.
On paper, Manchester City are among the few clubs that can pay the astronomical wages of the former Barcelona man. The Mirror adds that Manchester United are also tempted by the possibility of bringing Neymar to Old Trafford.
How Guardiola could line up with Neymar
Despite his injury concerns, Neymar is a world-class player who would readily walk into any team.
Should Guardiola’s phone calls turn into a move to the Etihad, Sports Brief takes a look at how he would fit Guardiola’s plans. The Spanish manager has shown over the years that he is not afraid to tweak his system.
1. As a left winger
This is the Brazilian’s position of strength. he has played a majority of his career from the left wing due to the lethal nature of his right foot. Jack Grealish has, however, made this position his own this season after initially struggling since joining from Aston Villa.
2. As a secondary striker
Should Guardiola stick with Grealish on the left wing, Neymar could easily be moved into a secondary striker position.
It is the same position he adopted under Tite in the Brazil national team set up to allow for Vinicius Junior’s inclusion into the team.
Guardiola’s 3-2-4-1 formation would see him play alongside Kevin De Bruyne, just behind Erling Haaland and just in front of a double pivot midfield, usually of John Stones and Rodri, with Grealish and Bernardo Silva covering the flanks.
This could also solve the Ilkay Gundogan issue. The skipper is yet to agree a new deal with the club.
3. As a number 10
This is highly unlikely given that Guardiola rarely uses the 4-2-3-1 formation to allow for the number 10 to play behind the striker. However, De Bruyne slightly dropping in deep could allow Neymar to play in between two wingers, just behind the main striker.
Guardiola could as easily come up with a different position for the talented forward. It would be exciting to see what he adds to the current Manchester City team should he join this summer.
Neymar skips title celebrations
Sports Brief has also reported that Neymar elected not to travel to Strasbourg, where a solitary Lionel Messi goal secured a 1-1 draw for the Parisians and confirmed their second successive Ligue 1 title.
The Brazilian instead attended the showcase Formula 1 event in Monaco and was pictured alongside Hollywood superstars like Tom Holland, Orlando Bloom, and Michael Douglas – a decision that has not gone down well with the club.
Neymar’s absence from their title celebrations has reportedly been seen as an ‘act of provocation’ by the PSG hierarchy, as his exit this summer appears increasingly likely.
Pep Guardiola is confident that his Man Citysquad is prepared to seize the opportunity and achieve a historic treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Having secured their third consecutive league title with three games remaining, the English champions now have the FA Cup final against Manchester United and the Champions League final against Inter Milan next month.
In English football, only Manchester United’s class of 1998/99 has previously accomplished the treble.
Guardiola believes his team has the potential to join this elite group and etch their names in football history.
“Everybody knows what position we are in. It comes once in a lifetime,” Guardiola said on Friday.
“Once we are there, first of all you have to relax and enjoy and do your best, but no one can be sure we will be in that position again.
“They are ready. I see many details — how they come up on days off to make treatments, how many hours they stay to make the treatments, how players are individually concerned maybe they cannot play theFA Cup final and Champions League final.
“When you see that you don’t have to tell anything and do anything.”
Guardiola’s scrupulous attention to detail is often hailed as a key to his success.
But he said some time off after Sunday’s final league game away to Brentford is the best preparation for two huge matches.
“When I started, it was ‘I have to prepare the final. I have to make a lot of videos’. Now it’s completely the opposite,” said the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, who has won 11 league titles in 14 seasons as a coach.
“We need to disconnect. Even our physios and doctors and cooks, they work incredibly hard in this period. They don’t have time off. They need to disconnect.
“Go with your families. If the sun is shining, play golf, do whatever you want and (have) quality (rest) to prepare for the finals. Arrive in the best conditions for the finals.”
Gareth Southgate made headlines by giving Eberechi Eze his first England call-up and ending Lewis Dunk’s absence from international duty, but Raheem Sterling was noticeably absent from the squad.
After starting the Euro 2024 qualification with victories over Italy and Ukraine, the focus now shifts to the upcoming matches against Malta and North Macedonia in June, which are expected to be relatively straightforward.
Sterling’s absence stands out the most for these games, as he concludes a challenging first season since his transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea, leaving him feeling frustrated.
Raheem Sterling
The 28-year-old has not played for England since the World Cup quarter-final exit to France – when a burglary at home disrupted his preparations – as injury ruled him out of the March camp.
“I spoke with him a week or so ago – a general catch-up,” England boss Southgate said.
“He’s not happy physically with his condition, having been carrying a hamstring problem. He really wasn’t in consideration.
“So, we didn’t get to the point of whether he should be in or out. He doesn’t think he is operating at the level he needs.”
A representative for Sterling called it a “mutual decision” that allows the player to focus on “recuperating his body in preparation for the upcoming season”.
The 28-year-old is determined to play a key role for England next term and Southgate says he can get back into the fold ahead of next year’s finals, as can omitted Tottenham defender Eric Dier.
“As we’ve shown with Tyrone (Mings) coming back (this time) and other players like Trent (Alexander-Arnold) coming back in, the door is always open when players are playing well,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Eric and Raheem both have physical issues really at the moment that they’re dealing with, so there’s part of that is behind that decision as well.
“But there’s another year to go before the Euros and it’s possible for everybody to get in that squad.”
Mings, Alexander-Arnold, Callum Wilson and Sam Johnstone returned to the England squad as Southgate has largely stuck with the tried and tested for the Group C games, withCrystal Palace attacking midfielder Eze the only uncapped player named in the group.
The 24-year-old finally get his shot with England after an Achilles injury cost him a place in the provisional Euro 2020 squad.
“We have liked him for a long time,” Southgate said.
“He was very unfortunate just before the Euros. We were going to call him into a prep camp to have a look at him and he got a bad injury.
“I remember talking toRoy Hodgson about him then and Roy telling me he’d picked up an injury in training that day.
“I think he has finished the season really strongly, he can play in a couple of positions across that attacking line.
“He’s a goal threat, he’s got nice ability and bursts of speed to go past people and to take people out of the game with dribbling skills.
“We’re looking forward to seeing him a bit closer and everybody I speak to talks brilliantly about him as a person as well.”
Dunk has played for England but the Brighton captain has not been selected since winning his first cap against the United States in November 2018.
“Brighton’s football this year has been exceptional and Lewis Dunk and Levi Cowell have been a big part of that,” Southgate said.
“He’s shown great composure with the ball, he’s asked to defend very often one against one situations and he thoroughly deserves his call.”
The squad also includesMarcus Rashford, who missed March’s fixtures and last featured for England in a qualifier in the run to the last Euros.
“He’s a super player who’s had a really good season, so he’s an important player for us,” Southgate told talkSPORT.
“We’ve not been blessed with having him to be able to put in the team too often but we’re hoping that’s different. And we’re looking forward to seeing him again.”
There is no place for Ben White, who has not featured for England since leaving Qatar after the World Cup group stage due to personal reasons.
“I spoke with Ben before the camp in March,” Southgate added.
“But at the moment, we’ve got (Kieran) Trippier and (Kyle) Walker in that area of the pitch.
“He’s had a very good season, as have the whole Arsenal team, but he’s not ahead of those guys at the moment.”
Pep Guardiola, the manager ofManchester City, struggled to contain his joy as he played a pivotal role in guiding the club to clinch this season’s Premier League (EPL) title.
City secured the prestigious crown with three games remaining, following a remarkable series of victories in the final stretch.
The Cityzens were officially declared champions on Saturday evening, shortly after Arsenal suffered a detrimental 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
According to BBC, the Gunners’ loss meant it was mathematically impossible for them to catch up to City in the race.
However, Guardiola’s charges had to wait until Sunday before they could finally lift the trophy for the fifth time under the Spaniard.
Guardiola shows off dance moves
The former Barcelona andBayern Munich boss used the opportunity to parade his dance moves as he joined Man City players and fans in a dance, shortly after they were crowned champions.
The Daily Star reports that Man City fans were left in awe of their manager’s groovy dance moves, as the 52-year-old let loose in celebration.
Guardiola was sporting a City shirt with ‘Champions 23’ on the back as he joined the celebrations.
An overjoyed Pep Guardiola joined Manchester City stars, fans, and staff in dance after they were crowned English champions on Sunday
The experienced tactician will now be hoping to help City win a historic treble before the end of the season.
The English giants are in two finals- the Champions League and the FA Cup.
Haaland joins fans in dance
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Erling Haaland was once again the centre of attention during Man City’s Premier League trophy presentation.
The Norwegian hotshot was involved in a heartwarming moment with City fans, as he was caught on camera leaving an on-pitch interview to join supporters in dance.
Talksport reports that Sky Sports had managed to get hold of the striker for an interview before the incident happened.
DuringMan City’s title celebrations, Pep Guardiola’s daughter Maria created quite a stir, potentially overshadowing her father.
Manchester City had already secured the championship ahead of their match against Chelsea, thanks to Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest the day before.
Pep and daughter Maria steals the show during City’s championships celebrations
City were greeted to a guard of honour by Chelsea as they walked on to the pitch already knowing their third title in a row was in the bag.
This season’s is also Pep’s fifth for the Cityzens since joining back in 2016.
And the Sky Blues wasted no time in celebrating their latest achievement, as they aim to win a historic Treble this season.
The players were treated byGuardiola to pizza and beer in the dressing room ahead of their coronation on the pitch.
With players’ families joining them on the pitch to celebrate, it was Guardiola’s daughter, Maria, who turned the heads of fans online.
Maria, 22, is no stranger to the social media spotlight, having previously dated former Spurs star Dele Alli.
The Barcelona-born influencer boasts more than half a million followers on Instagram.
She is also signed to modelling agency Premier Model Management.
And many fans were pre-occupied by her good looks while Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp lauded her father’s footballing achievements during Sunday’s broadcast.
One fan tweeted a series of flustered emojis in reaction to a photo of Maria, while another reacted with a gif of Wout Weghorst celebrating in response to the Spanish beauty.
City’s boozy title celebrations continued into the night, as the likes of Erling Haaland and his girlfriend hit an exclusive Manchester nightclub to celebrate the club’s latest title.
Having confirmed the Premier League on Saturday, City will play their last two Premier League games against Brighton and Brentford before their FA Cup final clash with Manchester United on June 3rd.
Fans will be hoping that the celebrations will continue as City look to become the second team to win the Treble after rivals Manchester United completed the feat in 1999.
Popular Afrobeats star, Davido was recently seen at Etihad Stadium, sporting a Manchester City jersey while attending the match between the Premier League champions and Chelsea.
The appearance followed an invitation from global sports company PUMA, who had engaged in a Twitter exchange with Davido the day prior.
PUMA had unveiled the new PUMA jerseys for Manchester City’s upcoming 2023/24 season, prompting the interaction between the music icon and the sports company.
Davido reacted to the post, revealing how impressed he was by the design.
He wrote, “Hmmm. Looking like the jersey of champions !
Love to see it ! #PumaFam,”.
Davido files Puma jet to Etihad for City’s Premier League championships
Davido soon received a response from PUMA who appreciated him for his comment and proceeded to invite him to the title-celebration match at the Etihad.
In a prompt reply, Davido requested that a jet be sent to him, and the company promised him that they would.
Meanwhile, in response to a curious fan wanting to know if Davido showed up for the match, PUMA shared a picture of the superstar in Etihad donning a Man City jersey.
Manchester City’s remarkable display against Real Madrid on May 17 was slightly overshadowed by a momentary clash between Kevin De Bruyne and Pep Guardiola.
Following a loss of possession, De Bruyne seemed to express his frustration towards his manager, but the incident was swiftly resolved as Guardiola embraced him warmly when he was substituted.
In a subsequent explanation, Guardiola emphasized that the entire team, including De Bruyne, was under immense pressure to maintain control of the game after halftime.
He dismissed the altercation as a natural occurrence within the context of a competitive match, as reported by Goal.
Player-manager confrontations are not new in football. Some, like De Bruyne and Guardiola, have been lucky to patch things up, but others still have the same animosity to date.
Sports Brief takes a look at the most heated player-manager confrontations.
1. Alex Ferguson and David Beckham (Manchester United)
The legendaryManchester United manager built his reputation on a zero-tolerance policy to indiscipline no matter how big of a star you are.
He had a couple of clashes with his players, but perhaps the one with Beckham in 2003 stands out from the bunch. The two reportedly almost came to blows in the dressing room, with the midfielder sustaining a cut above his eyebrow, as reported by MEN.
He was thereafter sold to Real Madrid, but the two have since reconciled, with Beckham even insinuating he was possibly at fault.
2. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea)
This was partly down to a communication breakdown when Arrizabalaga famously decided to ignore Sarri’s instructions to come off during the Carabao Cup final in 2019.
Sarri wanted to introduce Willy Caballero in the dying minutes of extra time against Manchester City with an eye on the subsequent penalty shootouts. Arrizabalaga stood his ground and failed to win the game for Chelsea.
The World’s most expensive goalkeeper apologised to his coach afterwards, as reported by Sky Sports.
3. Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy (Ireland)
If you know Keane, you know how combative he was during his playing days. Not that he has changed much with his punditry.
He infamously called out Ireland national team boss Mick McCarthy, blasting out his training sessions ahead of the 2002 World Cup. The former Manchester United skipper was sent home.
4. Nicolas Anelka and Ray Domenech (France)
Another international incident and another player to be sent home from an international tournament. France’s World Cup campaign in South Africa in 2010 was shambolic at best and Anelka’s role will be remembered for years to come.
The experienced striker publicly called out Head Coach Domenech by calling him unprintable names after their defeat to Mexico. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid striker had been asked to play in a position he was not comfortable in, as captured by the Mirror.
He refused to apologise and was sent home as Les Bleus crashed out in the group stage. Anelka has never apologised to date.
5. Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba (Manchester United)
A list of clashes won’t be complete without Mourinho being mentioned anywhere, will it? The Special One has never been afraid of speaking his mind but in 2018, he was the one doing the listening.
Pogba was infuriated that Manchester United had sat back against Watford instead of attacking against Watford at Old Trafford.
Mourinho did not take the words of the Frenchman lightly and stripped him of the vice-captaincy of the club. As Sky Sports reported, the Portuguese manager, however, maintained that he had no issue with the midfielder.
What next for De Bruyne and Guardiola?
City faithful will be happy there are no lingering issues between Guardiola and De Bruyne as they enter into the final five fixtures of their season. They play Chelsea this weekend with a win enough to guarantee them a fifth title in six years.
They would then wrap up their Premier League campaign against Brighton and Brentford before facing Manchester United in the FA Cup final on June 3. The team will then attempt to win their first Champions League title when they play Inter Milan on June 10.
3 controversial calls in Champions League
De Bruyne’s blueprint was all over the semifinal as he scored a thunderbolt to equalise proceedings in the first leg on May 9.
There was nothing wrong with the Belgian’s shot, only that a few seconds earlier, Bernardo Silva had retrieved the ball after it had crossed the line for a throw-in, but the officials failed to spot it. VAR failed to review the incident and Ancelotti was so furious that he got himself booked.
As Sports Brief reported, there have been more scandalous decisions in the Champions League in the past; goals and decisions that stood that weren’t supposed to.
Pep Guardiola has downplayed his role inMan City’s exceptional season, despite their impressive form and the potential to secure a treble.
As they prepare to host Chelsea in their final Premier League home game, with the FA Cup and Champions League finals on the horizon, there is a sense of celebration surrounding the team.
Guardiola has once again been a huge factor in their success, with little doubt after Wednesday’s ruthless demolition of Real Madrid that he has brought his team to the boil at just the right time.
Yet the inspirational Catalan has no interest in taking all the credit.

The City boss said: “As a manager, I feel part of something but, no confusion, I never think it belongs to me.
“I’m part of it, I don’t deny it, but not without the incredible work and decisions of the sporting director, the board and the players, who are the most important thing.
“I am a part of that and I am really proud but I’m not the only person to achieve the Premier Leagues or Champions League finals and so on. I don’t feel only I am responsible for that.”
Defender Nathan Ake is City’s only fitness doubt for the visit of Chelsea. The Netherlands international has missed the last three games after suffering a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

City are unbeaten in their last 23 games in all competitions since February and have won 19 of them.
Legendary figure atManchester United, Rio Ferdinand, has disclosed the content of a text message he received from Pep Guardiola just hours before Manchester City’s crucial Champions League match against Real Madrid.
The two teams clashed in a thrilling semi-final encounter at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in Spain, both teams had everything to fight for in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City’s manager Pep Guardiola
The Citizens, who are looking to win the competition for the first time in their history, were the eventual winners of the fixture.
Sky Sports reports that Bernardo Silva was the man of the moment for City, as he netted a first-half brace before Akanji and Julian Alvarez also got their names on the scoresheet to help the hosts beat Real 4-0.
Pep’s message to Rio
It has now emerged that Guardiola was very much aware that his charges would demolish the La Liga giants during their meeting.
According to Rio, the Man City boss texted him moments before the clash and told him his side would emerge victors.
“Pep Guardiola texted me before the game and said, ‘We beat them two years ago, and we will beat them again, believe me’,” Sportbible quoted Ferdinand saying.
Rio Ferdinand and Pep Guardiola
Rio’s revelation came moments after a video emerged of Guardiola approaching the legendary defender after the match and pointing, seemingly, in an attempt to show that he was proven right.
Pep clashes with De Bruyne
Earlier, Sports Brief reported Kevin De Bruyne and Pep Guardiola clashed midway through the second half of Man City’s clash against Real Madrid.
The incident happened after the Belgian playmaker lost possession to Eder Millitao before turning to his manager, shouting in anger.
While it remains unclear what sparked the spat, it is believed De Bruyne was dissatisfied with the instructions shouted at him by Pep.
The nominations for the end-of-season awards in the Premier League have been announced, with Arsenal and Manchester City featuring prominently.
These two clubs have played a significant role in the captivating title race, with Manchester City currently leading the way in their pursuit of a historic treble.
✅ Young Player of the Season nomination ✅ Player of the Season nomination
Captain Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli are all in contention for the prestigious award. However, last year’s winner Phil Foden is not among the nominees this time around.
Instead, his prolific Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland has been recognized for his exceptional performances.
Joining the Gunners trio and the Norwegian striker on the list of nominees are Brighton duo Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, as well as Newcastle pair Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.
The competition for the Young Player of the Season award promises to be intense, with these talented individuals showcasing their skills throughout the campaign.
Manager of the Season
Unsurprisingly, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola have both received nominations for the Premier League Manager of the Season award.
👔 Mikel has been nominated for the Premier League Manager of the Season award
The Gunners boss has led the team to their highest finish since 2015-16, while the City manager is on the cusp of winning a fifth title in six years.
Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and Fulham boss Marco Silva both make the cut, as do Aston Villa leader Unai Emery and Brighton mastermind Roberto De Zerbi, who both joined their respective clubs during the 2022-23 season.
Even if he (Pep Guardiola) does not succeed in winning the Champions League, Pep Guardiola believes his legacy at Man City will be “amazing.”
But, City’s Kyle Walker believes the team owes it to their Abu Dhabi owners to eventually rule Europe.
City, who are poised to win their fifth Premier League championship in as many years, have not yet won the trophy they really desire in Pep’s seven years at the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola
With their semi-final with Real Madrid poised at 1-1 ahead of the second leg, Guardiola said: “My legacy is exceptional already.
“I’ve been here many times already. The legacy is that we have had one hell of a time.
“For many years they will remember a generation of players who for five or six years scored lots of goals and conceded very few — won lots of things and won very well.
“People should remember that. It would be a good book.
“Whether or not they will remember us or not I don’t know but we have had a good time.”
However, Walker believes that after 12 consecutive years in the competition, it is high time they finally lifted the trophy.
Kyle Walker wants to win the Champions League for City’s owners
The defender said: “You have to just look over the road at United and what they have accomplished over a number of years.
“When you get compared to that team, they won countless titles.
“We’ve done five in six years, hopefully, if we can cross the line on this one.
“But the club is missing the Champions League and the owners and the amount of money they have pumped into this club and the investment they have done, we owe that to them.
“We got to the Champions League final against Chelsea and did not perform as well as we can.
“So we owe that to ourselves to get some revenge because we know it was below par in 2021.”
Victory over champs Real would leave Pep’s Treble chasers hot favourites to lift Europe’s big prize.
Guardiola added: “We’re not stupid, we know how important this game is.
“It is maybe one of the most important games since we came together here. We cannot deny that. For the competition, for the rival, for many things.”
Guardiola’s players battled back to earn a draw in the Bernabeu last week thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s stunner.
Kevin Debruyne
But Pep said: “My feeling is we have to play better than we did in Madrid.
“But all the players have to do is what we’ve done for many years.
“I’ve lost seven semi- finals out of ten. I’ve lost more than I’ve won, so there are many things you can’t control but my only wish is to be ourselves.”
The ex-Barca boss has been accused of causing City’s downfall in Europe by tinkering too much.
And he teased: “I have an idea that we could do something a bit differently but it’s nothing special.
“I’m not overthinking it, don’t worry guys, nothing different to what we’ve done, just more fluid and play a bit better.”
Last term, the Etihad clash saw City winning 4-3 in the first leg — before slipping up in Spain.
Guardiola added: “We’d like to have the game we had here last season, I’d sign for it right now but I don’t think it will happen.”
When questioned about the presence of a release clause inErling Haaland’s contract with Man City, his agent chose not to provide a clear answer.
The talented 22-year-old forward, who has already scored an impressive 52 goals this season, is aiming to contribute further in tonight’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.
Haaland, hailing from Norway, was acquired by City in a £51 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund last year.
Haaland at Dortmund
According to The Athletic, his City contract initially possessed a £150m release clause, which was due to kick in during the summer of 2024.
The clause was directly linked to Pep Guardiola’s future, and is claimed to have expired when the Spaniard signed his new contract last November.
And now Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has been asked whether Haaland still has the release clause following Guardiola’s new deal.
But Pimenta cryptically told Mundo Deportivo on the situation: “I have nothing to clarify.
“The mystery of this story is nice because nobody knows where it is, like a treasure chest.
“It’s more beautiful and, as a lawyer, I can’t reveal contracts.”
And Pimenta was also asked where can Haaland go for the next step in his career.
She replied: “Wherever he wants. He is a player that has never been seen. For me, his quality in everything and his ability to evolve are very impressive.
“He is capable of adapting quickly to a new club, to a society, to the coach… it is as if he had always been there. That gives you a lot of peace of mind and allows you to move forward.
“He is very calm in his professional and personal life, he has the quality, today he is in the right place, with the right team and the right coach.
“In Brazil we say that the sky is the limit. I think he is going to break all the records.”
The reason for Kyle Walker’s affectionate embrace withVinicius Junior following the first leg of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid has been revealed.
The Spanish powerhouses will be Man City’s opponents at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg. The English right-back and Vinicius engaged in a contentious scrap on the right flank.
Kyle Walker and Vinicius enjoyed a heartwarming moment after Man City’s draw with Real Madrid.
With the tie finely poised at one-all, both Walker and Vinicius will be expected to put up splendid performances to push their respective clubs over the line in their pursuit of European glory.
Ahead of Wednesday’s second-leg clash, the Sheffield-born defender lifted the lid on what motivated him to embrace the Madrid winger.
According to the 32-year-old, he cautioned Vini not to make a meme out of him, after the Brazilian tried an audacious rainbow flick in an attempt to outwit the former Tottenham Hotspur full-back in the first leg.
“I went to hug Vinícius because he tried to rainbow-flick me. It was more to say, ‘Don’t do that again’ because I don’t want to be a meme,” he said, as quoted by Madrid Zone.

Aside from his light-hearted caution to the zippy winger, Walker expressed his utmost respect to Vinicius, per Evening Standard.
“Boxers have a battle and shake hands after. You give the level of respect because they deserve it.
Carrying a massive club over the line in the Champions League, you show your respect. Tomorrow night, I’ll give him the respect he deserves at full-time, but before that, it’s dog-eat-dog.”
Vini attempts audacious rainbow flick
The Brazilian put on another impeccable show in the UCL with a fine display against Manchester City, Sports Brief reported.
Vinicius even attempted a rainbow flick, but the Citizens defender, Kyle Walker was alert to him and stopped his effort.
Vini’s strengths, like Kylian Mbappe’s, are his pace and mazy feet with the player improving his finishing and pass success.

Walker names toughest-ever opponents
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Walker named the three toughest players he has ever come up against, with his choices raising some eyebrows.
The England international recently named the attackers that still gave him nightmares, with his list including former Liverpool star, Sadio Mane.
Walker also admitted he was torn between picking Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Mbappe as the more difficult.
Prior to playing Man City on May 17 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal, Real Madrid experienced a little setback in their preparations.
The Los Blancos players arrived at Manchester Airport on Tuesday, May 16, but they were stuck there for more than 30 minutes because their coach was late.
The players were reportedly seen waiting for their bus at terminal 2, and head coach Carlo Ancelotti did not appear happy about the situation, according to The Sun.
Luka Modric’s facial expressions also looked like someone who would have preferred to be anywhere else than in the airport.

However, Vinicius Junior and Eder Militao appeared to be in high spirits as they chatted with their teammates.
The latter will be available after missing the first leg through suspension, where the former starred with a beauty of a goal.
Real Madrid fans will be hoping that the minor delay didn’t affect the team’s plans and morale ahead of the crunch tie at the Etihad.
The duel is evenly balanced at one-all after Kevin De Bruyne cancelled out Vinicius’ goal.
The winner of the tie will face Inter Milan in the June 10 final in Istanbul.
Kyle Walker vs Vinicius Junior
Sports Brief has also reported that Kyle Walker has explained the reason behind his warm embrace with Vinicius Junior after the first leg of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League tie with Real Madrid.
The English right-back had an eventful battle with Vinicius on the right flank, and the two are set to rekindle their rivalry when Man City host the Spanish giants at the Etihad Stadium in the return leg.

Fascinating statistics have surfaced indicating that without Erling Haaland, Arsenal would have defeated Manchester City to win the Premier League.
After Arsenal stumbled in the title battle towards the end of the season, City are on track to win the domestic championship this year.
After a fantastic campaign led by Mikel Arteta, in which the team dominated the standings for the majority of the year, the Gunners were hailed as the clear favourite to win the championship.
Man City head coach, Pep Guardiola and ‘goal scoring machine Haaland
However, a string of poor performances in recent weeks have seen them lose the grip at the top, with their weekend defeat against Brighton all but handing Man City the title.
The Athletic reports Arteta’s men were demolished 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium over the weekend, with the result leaving them trailing City, who have a game in hand, by four points.
Haaland and City’s title bid
While Man City boast an incredible squad, it has now emerged they have Haaland to thank for putting them on course to retain the Premier League.
According to Sportbible, stats show that had it not been for the Norwegian’s goals this term, the Citizens would not have successfully challenged for the crown.
City and Arsenal
The publication, citing numbers crunched by NJ.bet, shows the champs would not have even been in the Premier League top four without Haaland.
The former Borussia Dortmund ace has scored an eyewatering 52 goals for City across competitions, with 36 of those coming in the Premier League.
Without his contributions, the Citizens would be sitting fifth with 61 points, a point behind Liverpool, who would be in fourth.
Arsenal would be leading the table with their current 81 points, a massive 13 points ahead of Newcastle, who would be second.
Meanwhile, Man United would be sitting third with 67 points, a point behind the Magpies.
Why Arsenal lost EPL title
Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Manchester United legend and now pundit, Gary Neville outlining seven reasons why Arsenal failed to win the EPL title this season.
With the Gunners having little to no hope of being crowned champions, the Red Devils legend believes he knows why the north Londoners tripped at the finish line.
The Norwegian striker, known for his exceptional goal-scoring prowess and clinical finishing, added a new dimension to City’s already formidable attacking lineup.
His arrival provided City with a lethal and consistent source of goals, giving them an edge over their competitors.
Despite Arsenal’s commendable efforts, they were unable to sustain their early-season form until the end.
While their campaign ultimately fell short, their performances should not be overshadowed.
Under Arteta’s guidance, Arsenal displayed an improved style of play, solid defensive organization, and promising attacking combinations that ignited hopes of a potential title triumph.
The emergence of young talents like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, coupled with the experienced presence of players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, contributed to Arsenal’s success during the season.
Nonetheless, Arsenal’s progress under Arteta bodes well for the future, as they continue to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for major honors.
With the right reinforcements and continued development, the Gunners will be eager to mount a stronger title challenge in the seasons to come.
While the statistics indicate that Arsenal could have secured the Premier League title if not for Haaland’s influence, it is important to recognize the overall strength and depth of Manchester City’s squad, which extends beyond any single player.
At only 22 years old, he has shattered numerous goalscoring records and established himself as one of the world’s best footballers.
As reported by ESPN, Haaland recently set a new Premier League single-season scoring record by scoring his 35th goal in a remarkable campaign during a 3-0 victory against West Ham.
But beyond Haaland’s stardom, the youngster has a supportive family behind him, which includes his sister, Gabrielle Braut Haaland.
Who is Gabrielle Braut Haaland?
The Sun describes Gabrielle Braut Haaland as a social media star who has equally built an impressive career of her own.
Gabrielle, who is said to be a healthcare assistant, has a strong social media presence and boasts more than 100,000 followers on Instagram.
Born in 1998, she is reportedly married to Norwegian football player Jan Gunnar Eide, who plays as a striker.
The couple got married in 2020 and welcomed their first baby together in 2021.
Apparently, Gabrielle is not Haaland’s only sibling.
The star forward has an older brother, finance student Astor Haaland.
The former Borussia Dortmund star also has two half-sisters.

Pep Guardiola has expressed his concern over the scheduling clash caused by the Eurovision Song Contest, as Manchester City aims to maintain their Treble bid.
The Premier League leaders have an important away match against relegation-threatened Everton on Sunday, just three days before their Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid at home.
Guardiola would have preferred the game to be played on Saturday, but due to security reasons related to the Eurovision event in Liverpool city centre, it was not possible.
That means Real, who are out of contention for the LaLiga title and are in action on Saturday against Getafe, will have a day’s rest more than City heading into Wednesday’s encounter.
Guardiola said at a press conference: “My thought is just Everton, no more than that.
“Eleven months working for the Premier League, I don’t want to be distracted for Madrid because I won’t have time.
“Well, not much, because we play Sunday – thank you so much. I don’t understand it, but I don’t want to fight for that any more.
“We have to adapt to it. It doesn’t matter, I don’t fight any more the schedules.
“In the end we can’t play Saturday because of Eurovision or something like that in Liverpool and we don’t have enough bodies to handle two important events sometimes.
“OK, you have to adapt. What can I do? We’d prefer to play Saturday to be able to prepare but it is what it is.
Unlike Real, City will not want to ease up over the weekend as they look to keep Arsenal at bay in the title race.
City go into the weekend fixtures with a clear advantage, leading the Gunners by a point with a game in hand.
They could face a tough challenge against an Everton side fighting for survival and who claimed a significant victory by thrashing European hopefuls Brighton 5-1 in their last outing.
Real defender Dani Carvajal has suggested the intensity of City’s fixtures could benefit the Spanish side – who drew 1-1 with City in Tuesday’s first leg – but Guardiola is confident his players can stand up to the challenge.
He said: “Every player is ready to play and give his own absolute contribution.
“I thought a lot about a substitution in the Bernabeu. I decided on players on the bench that are so dynamic – Phil (Foden), Julian (Alvarez), Riyad (Mahrez).
“But in the moment we didn’t need that, we didn’t need a player to increase our rhythm.
“But everybody will be so important, we have a lot of games and everyone is ready.”
The Manchester City forward had an outstanding debut season, scoring 51 goals and playing a key role in City’s Premier League success and cup runs.
Sam Kerr of Chelsea received the women’s award. Haaland secured 82% of the FWA vote, surpassing Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard of Arsenal.
He said: “To win the FWA award in my first season in English football is an honour.
“I try every single day to be the best I can be and to be recognised like this means a lot to me.
“I have loved my time at City so far. My team-mates are incredible and provide me with the chances to score goals.
“I want to thank all of them because I could not have won this award without them. I also owe so much to Pep and the team behind the team here at City.
“I am now focused on ensuring I finish the season as strongly as possible and helping City win trophies.”
.@ErlingHaaland's record-breaking first season at City has seen him named as the 2023 Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year! 👇
Australia striker Kerr, 29, has won the women’s Footballer of the Year award for the second successive season, with Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly and Chelsea team-mate Lauren James completing the top three.
Kerr currently has 26 goals in 34 club appearances this season as Chelsea, currently second in the Women’s Super League table, reached the FA Cup final and also the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Haaland and Kerr are set to receive their awards at the FWA Footballer of the Year 75th anniversary dinner in London on May 25.
For the second year running, @SamKerr1 has been named the Football Writers' Association Women's Footballer of the Year! 😍
Erling Haaland received praise from Pep Guardiola for his performance against Real Madrid, although the Manchester City manager believes that the opposition’s setup hindered the Norwegian striker’s ability to play his usual game.
Despite Haaland being a goalscoring hero, he was unable to make much of an impact during the crucial first leg of the semi-finals, where Kevin De Bruyne’s brilliant strike helped secure a 1-1 draw for City after Vinicius Jr had opened the scoring.
Antonio Rudiger, who defended against Haaland with great tenacity, kept the 22-year-old at bay for much of the match.
In fact, the 51-goal star was restricted to just 21 touches throughout the evening on Tuesday night. That was the least out of every player that started the contest at the Bernabeu, including both goalkeepers.
City keeper Ederson even made more passes than Haaland, registering 19 to the Norwegian’s 13.
Speaking after the match, Guardiola explained why his main man was marked out of the match, insisting that Real Madrid’s defensive plan worked a treat.
The ex-Barcelona manager said:“The pockets and distances between the central defender and full-backs was occupied.
“It was not easy for Erling. He moved well and had his chances.”
The Italian remarked: “Defensively we were good. Rudiger against Haaland did well and the midfield had control.
“The performance was good and we are happy. We have strong motivation for the next game.”
City will be thanking De Bruyne for getting themselves back in the contest in a relatively cagey affair despite the sheer quality on show at the Bernabeu.
Former Chelsea defender Rudiger had a good game against Haaland
It was his powerful strike that gave Thibaut Courtois no chance as he hammered one in from outside the area after being laid off by Ilkay Gundogan.
And speaking after the match, City teammate Rodri admitted that they were indebted to De Bruyne.
The Spaniard said: “He [Kevin de Bruyne] is a massive player for us. Always he has been great and he helped us in the moment we most needed it.
“We were suffering a bit because they were keeping the ball and with the goal he gave us the confidence to keep pushing. It is a good result for us.
“We knew no matter what happened here it would not be the end. At home, we will need the people to support us.”
That goal means the Premier League leaders have a slight advantage when they return to the Etihad, playing in front of their own fans.
But no one can rule out Real Madrid, a club that has won the Champions League 14 times – more than anyone else – and has a collective 29 Champions League medals in the dressing room.
Vinicius Jr proved that in the first-half when his rocket saw Rio Ferdinand lose the plot and break the deadlock.
There were other flashpoints including Ancelotti uncharacteristically losing his cool, Jack Grealish getting thrown into an advertising board and Toni Kroos escaping a red card.
All signs point towards a true classic at the Etihad next Wednesday where the winner will face either Inter or AC Milan in the final.
Alfie Haaland, the father of Erling Haaland, a striker for Manchester City, has dismissed the incident that resulted in his removal from his seat at the Bernabeu during Tuesday’s evening match as a harmless joke.
A video circulating on social media revealed Haaland, who is 50 years old, engaged in a verbal altercation with Real Madrid fans while celebrating Kevin De Bruyne’s equalizer goal for City in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.
Ok. RM was not happy we were celebrating KDB goal. Other than than that we had to move because RM fans not happy with 1-1 https://t.co/PWpk6EAPUp
Former Leeds andManchester City midfielder Haaland cupped his ears in response to taunts from supporters near the executive box before he was guided away from the area by security staff.
Reports in Spain suggested Haaland had thrown food in the direction of home fans, which he denied, saying he had been asked to move to another location close by.
“RM was not happy we were celebrating KDB goal. Other than than that we had to move because RM fans not happy with 1-1,” the Norwegian wrote on Twitter.
Ok. I did not. Not true.We had some good banter with Madrid fans. They were not happy when City scored. Typical. Then we had to move 50 meters away. Nothing more. All happy. Well nearly…😉 https://t.co/tOQPToxEKN

Erling Haaland has enjoyed a standout first season with City, scoring 51 goals in all competitions.
Mr. Haaland was present in Madrid to support his son and his Manchester City team in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.
The incident was unpleasant and witnessed by many.

Despite early pressure and dominance from Pep Guardiola’s team, it was the record European champions who struck first thanks to a fine belter from Vinicius Junior.
Haaland had a rare dull day, with the Norwegian being subdued by Madrid’s centre-back pairing of Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba. He had two flimsy shots on target on a night Guardiola elected not to use his substitutes bench.
Perhaps frustrated with the situation, Alfie Haaland was accused of insulting Real Madrid fans, with footage showing him cupping his ears towards them.
As Daily Mail reports, he was also accused of throwing food at the opposition supporters before security intervened and escorted him out of his private box.
With his son previously linked with a move to the Spanish giants, this altercation could severely dent those hopes when that time comes. This was Haaland’s first-ever game at the iconic stadium.
He will be hoping for a better outing as City hope to reach their second UCL final in history.
Aguero slams Guardiola’s UCL tactics
Sports Brief also reported on Sergio Aguero blasting Guardiola’s ‘baffling’ decisions during Man City’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
The Citizens took on the reigning UCL champions in a mouthwatering first-leg semi-final encounter on May 9 at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Aguero was less than impressed with a tactical move made by Guardiola during the match, with the Spaniard leaving all his subs on the bench.
Pep Guardiola made a ‘baffling’ decision during Manchester City’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, according to Sergio Aguero.
The semi-final matchup between City and the defending champions took place on Tuesday, May 9, at the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to Marca, the European powerhouses agreed to a 1-1 draw in the thrilling match, leaving the tie wide open going into the second leg, which will be played at the Etihad Stadium.
During the first half, the hosts’ Vinicius Jr. scored a stunning goal to start the scoring before Kevin De Bruyne controversially equalised for City in the 66th minute.

Aguero hits out at Pep
Despite the encouraging result, Aguero was less impressed with a tactical decision made by Pep Guardiola during the match.
Sportbible reports that Guardiola did not make a single substitution in the Champions League match, a move that left Aguero baffled.
The City legend slammed his former manager for the decision, insisting his fellow countryman Julian Alvarez should have been given an opportunity to play.
“What I don’t understand is why he didn’t put Julián [Alvarez on]… I wonder, but well it’s Pep. He doesn’t marry anyone,” he said via @City_Xtra.
“If it was up to me, I’d play Julián in almost every game – we need him to be active and have a spark,” he added.
Fans mock Haaland
Earlier, Sports Brief reported a section of fans has taken to social media to mock Erling Haaland for allegedly going missing duringManchester City’s Champions League cracker against Real Madrid.
Haaland was part of City’s squad that settled for a 1-1 draw against the reigning champions in the first leg of the semi-final fixture staged at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
The Norwegian hotshot went into the clash off a fantastic run of form that had seen him score an eyewatering 51 goals across competitions.
City, who were heartbreakingly defeated by the Spanish giants in the semifinals a year ago, have a chance to atone this time around.
On Tuesday, the Bernabeu will host the first leg of their most recent match, and Guardiola is not thinking about the previous 12 months. Instead, he is focused on the game at hand.
The City manager said: “It was tough but we made an exceptional first game in Manchester and played a really good game here.
Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Real Madrid, has emphasized the importance of stopping Manchester City as a team and not just their star striker, Erling Haaland, in their upcoming Champions League semi-final match on Tuesday.
The 14-time champions will be hosting the hungry visitors led by the Norwegian hitman who has scored 51 goals in 45 games across all competitions, including 12 in eight Champions League matches.
However, Ancelotti believes that City is an unstoppable force as a team, and his strategy is to try and foil their entire squad.
“Obviously Haaland is a very dangerous player. He’s showing impressive qualities, above all in goalscoring. He’s a threat obviously,” Ancelotti told a news conference Monday.
“Just talking about Haaland means not talking about a complete team that plays good football, defends well, attacks, that has ideas.
“We’re not setting up for a game to stop Haaland, but to stop a team that seems unstoppable, but I think we can have chances to have an equal game, one that we can win.”
City have been foiled time and time again in their quest to win the Champions League, but Haaland’s lethal edge gives them a strong chance of beating Madrid and reaching the final.
Ancelotti said he thought Manchester City have more avenues to cause danger with Haaland in the side.
“It’s a more complete team than last year. They had a very good forward in Gabriel Jesus, but he has different characteristics to Haaland,” continued the Italian coach.
“Today, they can take advantage more of long balls, because they have a very tall striker, and behind him is (Kevin) De Bruyne, so they can win balls in the air.
“They have not changed their style, they are very well organised at the back and a team that handles the ball very well.”
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney recently suggested City would “blow away” Madrid in the tie, a comment which Los Blancos midfielder Toni Kroos laughed off.
Madrid beat Manchester City in last season’s semi-finals despite losing in the first leg, and the German was quick to recall it.
“It was the same a year ago, no? That Madrid were out, and we did it,” Kroos told reporters.
“I remember words from last year, not Rooney’s — who is a guy I like a lot, apart from what he said — but it doesn’t affect us.
“It doesn’t motivate us more either, because it’s impossible to be more motivated than we are.”

According to BBC, Ilkay Gundogan revealed that Pep Guardiola became furious in the locker room after Gundogan missed a penalty in Manchester City’s Premier League game against Leeds United.
Despite the miss, Gundogan went on to score two impressive goals in the first half, leading City to a crucial victory and extending their lead at the top of the table by four points.
The midfielder scored the opener with a neat finish after Riyadh Mahrez found him in space on the edge of the area before he doubled the advantage in the 27th minute.
Gundgogan had a chance to bag a hat-trick with six minutes left, only for the ex-Dortmund star to fluff the chance from the penalty spot.
Erling Haaland looked destined to step up to take the penalty but opted to hand the ball to his captain – much to the disappointment of Pep Guardiola.
The Man City boss was seen fuming on the touchline as he shouted ‘You’ve got to take it.’
Guardiola fumes at Gundogan
Express UK reports that Guardiola extended his fury to Gundogan in the dressing room as he took issue with the midfielder’s decision to take the penalty.
“First he (Guardiola) showed to Erling that he was quite mad about that and then also he had a go at me,” Gundogan disclosed.
“It is what it is at the end. The moment Erling grabbed the ball, I was sure he was going to take it but he looked out for me. I checked with him a few times to make sure he was sure. He was certain to hand the ball to me and I was confident to score,” he added.
Erling Haaland just beat Alan Shearer’s long-standing Premier League record, and Andrew Cole couldn’t be happier.
Haaland netted his 35th league goal of the season in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday.
That saw the 22-year-old set the new record for goals in a single Premier League season, which was previously set by Cole, who was then at Newcastle United, in the 1993-94 campaign and matched by Alan Shearer a year later — the duo both scored 34 times.
Cole, who spent time with both Manchester clubs in his career though is remembered best for his time at United, is not precious over his place in the record books being taken.
He told Stats Perform: “Records are there to be broken, it’s that simple. When people have mentioned it to me it’s not as if I’m going home and crying and saying, ‘Oh no!’
“It doesn’t bother me in the slightest, I don’t care – if someone deserved to break that record, go ahead, do it.
Erling Haaland: Record Breaker 🔥
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has broken the goal record in a single Premier League season, but which top scorers has he beaten?
Asked if he expected Haaland to hit the ground running in such fearsome fashion in his first season in England, Cole replied: “I’m not surprised, put it that way.
“If you look at what Man City have done throughout the years, they’ve been screaming out for someone who just wants to run into the box and score goals.
“Maybe the volume of goals he’s scored, but it’s not surprising in the slightest that he finds himself in the position that you find yourself. Because when you play for a team, like Man City that create so many chances, you just need the number nine to finish them off. That’s exactly what we’ve got now.
“If you’re playing a team that creates many chances for you, it’s not hard. When I did it at Newcastle the team was built for me, being built for me to score goals.”
In order to put Arsenal at bay in the title chase, Manchester City will play West Ham next in the Premier League.
With two games remaining, Pep Guardiola’s club is only two points behind the current leaders and will approach every game going forward as a must to maintain their lead and win the championship.
The Hammers have lost their past two games and will be trying to avoid three straight losses, while City remain unbeaten in all competitions since their setback at the hands of Tottenham in the first week of February.
West Ham are only four points above the drop zone and will need to pick up wins if they are to stay out of a relegation battle.
Following his recovery from a muscle injury, Nathan Ake may make an appearance in the upcoming match against West Ham, according to City boss Guardiola. The former Chelsea defender had missed the last three games due to a thigh injury, but has since returned to full training.
On the other hand, it seems less unlikely that Kevin De Bruyne will feature in the match, as he did not train with the squad prior to Tuesday’s late afternoon session.
Erling Haaland has been breaking goal records for fun this campaign and he scored his 50th goal of the season for City in their win over Fulham on Sunday. He will be raring to go again and will lead the line for the team from the blue side of Manchester.
Due to a thigh injury, Luka Modric may miss Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final match against Osasuna as well as the first leg of the Champions League semifinal versus Manchester City.
During Madrid’s unexpected 4-2 loss to Girona on Tuesday, which kept them 11 points behind LaLiga’s top team Barcelona, Modric suffered an injury to his left leg.
The setback comes at a bad moment for Los Blancos as they prepare to visit City three days after trying to break a nine-year drought by winning the Copa del Rey on May 6.
Asked about Modric’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Almeria, Ancelotti acknowledged losing the Croatian’s experience would be a big setback.
“He got an injury in the game against Girona. We will see how he progresses in the next few days,” Ancelotti said.
“He will be doubtful for the Copa final. We must evaluate him, we are hurt, but it can happen. I hope he recovers for the important matches.
“We have very important midfielders like Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni. We have many resources.
“But to replace Luka… you cannot replace his experience in these kinds of games.”
Madrid have won just four of their past nine league games (D2 L3) to allow Barca to pull clear at the summit.
Pushed on why Madrid had failed to replicate their cup heroics inLaLiga this term, Ancelotti said: “I don’t know, it’s a matter of concentration, it’s normal, not always being able to be at the top.
“The schedule is very demanding and I see many coaches complaining about this. We are human and it’s the truth, sometimes I can’t prepare all the games in the same way either.
“In some games you concentrate better, and in others it’s worse. It happens to everyone, good days and bad ones.
“You have to trust the players. I see the group in great shape. What happened last season was unforgettable and we want to repeat it.”
Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland have been referred to as “beasts” by Bernardo Silva after the explosive pair caused havoc in Manchester City’s crucial victory over Arsenal.
In a 4-1 victory on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium, De Bruyne notched two goals off of assists from Haaland and one more for John Stones before the Norwegian registered his own goal.
The win gave the treble-chasing champions a tight grip on the Premier League title battle as they closed the gap on the front-runners to two points with two games remaining.
Haaland has now scored a stunning 33 goals in the competition this season – one short of the record – and laid on seven assists while De Bruyne’s figures are seven and 16 respectively.
City midfielder Silva said: “We knew that they could come doing man-to-man and we tried to stretch them as much as possible because, if they do man-to-man against us, they have to deal with Kevin and Erling up front. It’s never going to be easy in that spot.
“It was perfect for Kevin. They gave space for Kevin and to Erling to run. When you give them this kind of space, they are so difficult to defend.
“Two beasts running, their movements – Kevin with the passes, Erling with the scoring – this was the opposite.
“They did it perfectly, they created lots of chances. We could have scored even more.”
City now have a superb chance to emulate Manchester United’s 1999 achievement of winning all three of the remaining trophies on offer.
As well as being in command of their title destiny they are through to the FA Cup final, where they will face United, and they take on Real Madrid in the last four of the Champions League next month.
Manager Pep Guardiola has been reluctant to publicly discuss the prospect of winning the treble.
Silva insists the subject is not off-limits but the focus is very much on taking one game at a time.
The Portuguese said: “No, he hasn’t banned anything! We’re big men and we talk about whatever we want.
“But these players know that the best way to achieve good things is to think just about the next one. If we don’t beat Fulham on Sunday we put ourselves in a difficult position to win the Premier League.
“If we don’t win the Premier League we arrive in the final of the FA Cup and in the semi-finals of the Champions League not in a good momentum.
“We want to try and stay in this good momentum to try and go as far as possible. The team is doing very well at the moment and we’re going to try and keep it that way.”
Thomas Partey, an Arsenal midfielder, said thatEmmanuel Adebayor, a former striker, ruined his reputation at the club.
One of the rare footballers from Africa who have a successful career at Arsenal is Adebayor. Yet when he was playing for Manchester City and wildly celebrated his goal in front of Arsenal supporters, he got into trouble with the supporters.
Partey thinks the Togolese legend’s actions destroyed his reputation in North London.
“I think he gave and then destroyed. Everything he gave here was fantastic but when he scored against Arsenal and celebrated, he destroyed,” he told SuperSports.
Partey, nonetheless, acknowledged Adebabyor’s quality but insisted that he destroyed his legacy at Arsenal after leaving the club.
“For me, he is a fantastic player and one of the best strikers in Africa but if you want to talk about here, he built everything, and here and after he destroyed.”
Adebayor’s move to Manchester City in the January transfer window in 2009 did not sit down well with the fans who turned against him.
The striker, fortunately, had a reply to the abuse he received when he scored in Man City’s 4-2 win at the Etihad. When his header went in for the fourth goal, he run at the length of the pitch and did a knee slide in front of the Arsenal fans.
Speakingafter the game Adebayor said: “I was being abused by people who six months ago were singing my name and the abuse was for no reason. There is only so much abuse a man can take until he reaches breaking point.
An offer came in for me and, as I understand it, Arsene [Wenger] and the club accepted [it]. It was not my fault I left, it was Arsene who wanted to accept the offer for me.”
Emmanuel Adebayor was fined £25,000 for his celebration.
