City hits hard on Arsenal, Pep says win was ‘not decisive but important’

While Pep Guardiola stressed that Manchester City’s 4-1 victory over Premier League rivals Arsenal was not decisive, he did admit that something significant had changed as a result of his team’s possession of the championship.

With the spectacular play of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland repeatedly breaking down the Arsenal defence, City made light of a match that had been long-billed as a high-stakes title match.

On a dominant night, City could have scored more than four goals, with Haaland scoring the last goal after twice setting up De Bruyne, who then assisted John Stones on a goal with a header.

Arsenal still ended the night top of the table, but their two-point advantage looks particularly vulnerable with a City side who have won seven in a row in the league boasting two games in hand.

“It was an important game, not decisive but important,” Guardiola said.

“We played very good. I know the opponent we played. They’re still top, I know it sounds naive what I’m saying but we are still behind. We are still there.”

With the exception of a few days in February after City won 3-1 at the Emirates, Arsenal have topped the Premier League table since the third week of the season.

City have been playing catch up all along with Guardiola calling Arsenal the favourites for the title, but this result convinced the Catalan he and his side are finally in the stronger position.

“Absolutely (I prefer) my position because now it’s in our hands,” he said.

“I would love that these two games are six points but you have to win them, but I prefer it because it depends on us.

“Until today, I prefer the position in the Premier League of Arsenal because if Arsenal had beaten us it’s in their hands. But now it is in our hands.”

For Arsenal this was a fourth straight game without a win, with the Gunners appearing to wilt just as City turn up the heat.

Mikel Arteta admitted his side were second best on the night and might now end up second best in the league, but refused to admit defeat in a title race his side still lead, at least for now.

“The analysis is clear,” Arteta said. “The better team won the game. They were probably at their best, especially in the first half, and we were nowhere near our level. When that happens the gap becomes too big.

“The first 30 minutes all the basic things you have to do against an exceptional team in terms of competing, winning duels, understanding what the game requires, we didn’t do it and we were punished.

“The stats said Arsenal were going to finish sixth or seventh and we are where we are with five games to go. Those players deserve a lot of credit after nine-and-a-half months being here. And there are still five games to play.

“In 22 years in this country I’ve seen a lot of things and there are not two equal games in this league.”

Arsenal have five games remaining and Arteta admitted they would need to win them all – something that would put them on 90 points – to take the challenge to City.

“We first have to lift the players up tonight because they suffer and it was difficult to swallow,” he said.

“Do everything we have done so well in the next match to earn the right to win it. That’s where we have to start.”

It’s a plotting and planning as Arteta explore winning tactics against former boss Pep

Tonight’s vital Premier League title match pits former coworkers Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta against one another.

Table-topping Arsenal leads Manchester City by five points, but City has two games in hand and is now in charge of their own fate as they try to win the title.

Arteta joined City as Guardiola’s assistant coach in 2016, but left to become the head coach of the Arsenal in 2019.

Ahead of tonight’s potential title decider, we turn the spotlight on the battle between managerial master and an apprentice who has been leading the way this season.

    Bogey side

Arteta’s Arsenal have lost all six of their previous league games against City.

They are the only side that the 41-year-old’s team have failed to beat in the competition since he became manager of the North Londoners.

Of the six defeats, three have come at City’s Etihad Stadium, with the hosts keeping a clean sheet on every occasion.

In the reverse fixture at the Emirates this season, Guardiola’s side took charge in the second half, overpowering their rivals in a 3-1 victory.

In addition, the two teams have met three times in cups. The first occasion was the one match in which Arteta’s Arsenal have triumphed over City, beating them 2-0 in the 2019-20 FA Cup semi-finals.

The Gunners have lost the two subsequent cup ties. They were defeated 4-1 at home in the 2020-21 Carabao Cup quarter-finals and were knocked out of the FA Cup this season, in a 1-0 away loss.

Mikel Arteta reveals Runners may face City without major midfielder

Before to Arsenal’s Premier League matchup with Manchester City, Mikel Arteta has disclosed that Granit Xhaka is a big doubt.

On Wednesday, April 26, the two table-toppers will square off at the Etihad Stadium in a match that has the potential to decide the championship.

Due to losses in three of their most recent games, the Gunners have hit a bit of a difficult patch at the time of the match.

ESPN reported Arsenal’s most recent outing ended in a 3-3 epic draw with relegation-battlers Southampton, with the result dealing them a massive blow in their title bid.

While the north Londoners are still topping the charts, there are only five points separating them and second-placed City, who have two games in hand.

Arteta’s charges will therefore be desperate to earn a positive result when they lock horns against the reigning English champions.

Xhaka doubt for Man City clash

However, they may have to do that without Granit Xhaka, who has been one of the club’s standout performers in their title bid.

Arteta disclosed on Tuesday that the Swiss midfielder is a big doubt for the Etihad Stadium trip through illness.

The Switzerland international is yet to resume training, having also missed Arsenal’s 3-3 draw against Southampton last Friday.

“Yeah Granit has been out and hopefully he will be able to train today. But he’s still a doubt,” Arteta admitted via Metro UK.

“The rest are okay,” he added.

    Arsenal players break down

It was previously reported that Arsenal stars broke down in tears after their third consecutive draw – that time against Southampton in their third consecutive game.

Captain, Martin Odegaard sparked late drama with a shot from outside the box before Bukayo Saka scored the third after a scramble in the box.

However, Arsenal players realised that in terms of their title aspirations, the game might as well have been lost instead of yet another draw.

  • William Saliba to miss Man City showdown following a stall in defender’s progress

William Saliba to miss Man City showdown following a stall in defender’s progress

The back injury the French defender sustained during Arsenal’s Europa League quarterfinal match against Sporting CP in March prevented him from playing for the club.

He has missed Arsenal’s last five games, and The Athletic reports that he will likely miss the club’s vital Premier League matchup against Manchester City on April 26.

Saliba’s absence could prove to be a huge blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations this season.

Out of the five games that the defender has missed thus far, the Gunners have managed to win only two while three matches ended in draws.

The Gunners have conceded nine goals in the last three Premier League games. They still have a five-point lead at the top, but Manchester City have played two games fewer.

The 22-year-old defender’s lower back injury could worsen if he does not get ample rest and is rushed to the pitch as the injury is linked to serious structural damage and has also affected his lumbar discs, according to The Daily Mail.

The Frenchman is almost certain to miss Wednesday’s Premier League against Manchester City and could also remain out of action on May 2 when Arsenal face Chelsea.

  • Man Utd will not watch City win a treble, we will ‘do everything’ to deny them that -Ten Hag

Man Utd will not watch City win a treble, we will ‘do everything’ to deny them that -Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag has pledged that Manchester United will “do everything” to prevent Manchester City from completing a possible triple when they square off in the FA Cup final.

After defeating Brighton and Hove Albion on penalties on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, United advanced to its record-tying 21st FA Cup final. Solly March missed his spot-kick, but the other 14 were all successful.

After City defeated Sheffield United 3-0 in the semifinals thanks to a hat-trick from Riyad Mahrez, the two Manchester clubs will now square off in a major cup final for the first time on June 3.

With City battling Arsenal in the Premier League title race and being drawn against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, Pep Guardiola’s team could yet collect three major trophies this term.

Doing so would see them match the famous achievements of United’s 1998-99 side, and Ten Hag knows how much the club’s fanbase would relish denying City.

“I understand, of course, the feelings from the Manchester United fans about it,” the Dutchman said.

“We will do everything to give them that, to give them the second trophy, everything that I have, everything the team have, everything the staff have, we will give everything to get that done.

“We can do it, because we proved it, but it’s not an easy job. It’s a great team, but we’ll also have a great team and great players and we can beat them.

“More than 100 per cent, you can’t do, so the fans can rely on that. We will give it and we will do it against every opponent, it doesn’t matter who it is.

“Of course, we want to give that against City. We want to give the fans that, sure.”

Having beaten Newcastle United to lift the EFL Cup in February, United have reached both domestic cup finals in the same season for just the third time.

However, the Red Devils have never won both trophies in the same campaign, lifting the FA Cup but losing the EFL Cup showpiece game in the 1982-83 and 1993-94 seasons.

Ten Hag wants the ‘lads’ lauded for a rebound from ‘bad day at the office’

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, praised David de Gea for overcoming a challenging game against Sevilla to defeat Brighton on penalties in Sunday’s FA Cup semifinal.

Sevilla defeated United 3-0 on Thursday, ensuring United’s elimination from the Europa League at the quarterfinal stage. All three of Sevilla’s goals were mainly attributed to De Gea.

Yet three days later, he made a number of superb saves to deny Brighton, and those saves ultimately helped the game end in penalties.

While De Gea never got particularly close to any of Brighton’s spot-kicks, United did progress to the final thanks to emerging 7-6 victors, with Solly March blazing over before Victor Lindelof sealed the Seagulls’ fate.

United’s collective performance may not have been spectacular but the improvement from Thursday was significant — including De Gea.

“I think he had two brilliant saves and know that he’s a world-class keeper,” Ten Hag said. “Thursday, he had a really bad day at the office, and it hurt.

“Really bad [day in the] office I have seen, but it’s always when you are the keeper and you make mistakes, often you get penalised.

“But it doesn’t mean that we have to go under. And also, we as a team, we let him down [against Sevilla] and we didn’t fight back on Thursday.

“[Criticism] was justified on Thursday but, today, the lads deserve compliments and credit because they bounced back once again, they showed character.

“What we have to learn and improve, which must be our next step, is that if we have a setback in a game, we fight back in that same game, that we keep calm and fight back in that same game.

“We have to deal with setbacks and we can do it better but in between games, and it’s not the first time, we do it very well.”

Manchester City await United in the final, making it the first ever Manchester derby in the FA Cup showpiece.

United will go into the contest as considerable outsiders, though Ten Hag pointed to their 2-1 win in January’s derby as evidence they can defeat Pep Guardiola’s treble-chasers.

“We have proof that we can beat them but then we have to play the perfect game,” Ten Hag continued.

“That was the most perfect game we played this season [winning the derby in January] but we have to go again.

“We know that but, first of all, we have to focus on different games because we have to be in the top four, to get into the Champions League for next season.”

  • Martin Odegaard ‘rags’ Haaland ahead of City-Arsenal clash

Martin Odegaard ‘rags’ Haaland ahead of City-Arsenal clash

When Arsenal travels to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City on April 26, Martin Odegaard will meet with fellow countryman Erling Haaland.

The outcome is expected to have significant effects on both teams’ chances of winning the championship, making it the season’s most important game.

Although their opponents have played two fewer games than Arsenal, the Gunners’ substantial lead at the top of the table has been reduced to only seven points, making a loss more detrimental overall.

The last time the Gunners won at the Etihad in the Premier League was in December 2015. Manchester City has already beaten them twice this season – once in the FA Cup and in the reverse fixture at the Emirates.

The two main protagonists for the Wednesday clash will be Odegaard and Haaland, who have been exemplary this season. The two are good friends but will have to put that aside for 90 minutes when they meet.

    Odegaard’s first impression of Haaland

But before their friendship blossomed, Odegaard’s first impression of Haaland was a negative one. The two first met in 2018 when they were both called up to represent Norway in U-21 competitions.

“You were more like a little (expletive) in the beginning. You were so childish. You have grown up more in the last couple of years. But you saw it in the first (international) camp, in the videos when you dance and sing.

It looks like you are 12 years old and the biggest little (expletive). Honestly,” as quoted by the Mirror.

Odegaard was making these comments during Haaland’s documentary ‘The Big Decision’, where he talked about a couple of things, including his decision to join Manchester City.

The Arsenal skipper also explained how he grew to like Haaland by understanding what his antics meant.

“I don’t think he does things because he thinks they are really cool. But maybe he wants to get a reaction and maybe be a little funny. I just laugh at him. I do not take it seriously when he does crazy things.”

Haaland has 32 goals in the Premier League, he needs one more to break Mohamed Salah’s record of most goals in a single season. Odegaard, meanwhile, has chipped in with 12 goals and 7 assists.

Haaland’s tweet suggests he covertly watched Arsenal vs Southampton With Cheeky

Arsenal’s Premier League match against Southampton is believed to have been watched secretly by Erling Haaland, according to supporters.

The Gunners and the Saints had an entertaining game at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, April 21.

Mikel Arteta’s team was eager to get back to winning ways during the game after dropping points in two of their previous matches.

However, The Telegraph reports the league leaders faltered yet again as they settled for a 3-3 damaging draw in what was a huge blow to their title bid.

The hosts had to rely on two late goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard to salvage the point after Carlos Alcaraz and Theo Walcott had put Southampton ahead.

    Haaland shares foretelling tweet

Haaland sparked reactions among fans with his foretelling tweet shortly after Arsenal’s epic draw against Southampton.

The Manchester City attacker posted a cheeky tweet with photos of him in training kits with the caption: “Mood Still.”

Haaland’s tweet sent fans into a meltdown, with many convinced the Norwegian hotshot had been watching the Emirates showdown.

    One replied:

    “What perfect tweet timing!”

    A second noted:

“Posting it after Arsenal bottling another game.”

    While another reckoned:

“You definitely watched the Arsenal game lol.”

Arsenal are scheduled to take on reigning champions Man City in their next Premier League outing.

Erling Haaland: City’s ‘goal machine’ misses penalty, but vindicates himself with a goal

Erling Haaland missed his first penalty in a Manchester City shirt during Bayern Munich’s clash.

Since moving from the Bundesliga to the Premier League, the Norwegian has been a threat for the Cityzens, scoring an incredible 48 goals in 41 appearances.

He reenacted Lionel Messi’s move against Jerome Boateng on Wednesday, seating Dayot Upamecano before scoring against Bayern Munich, according to Sportstar.

He then scored his 12th Champions League goal.

His goal will be neutralized by a spot kick from Joshua Kimmich, but it proved to be a case of much ado about nothing as City ran out 4-1 winners across two legs, advancing to the Champions League semifinal.

But before his sublime skill and then a goal in the 57th minute, Haaland failed to put away a penalty, Fan Nation reports.

The 22-year-old has been flawless from 12 yards for Man City but proved he is human after all, ballooning his effort – which was his first penalty miss in eight attempts.

Since moving to the Etihad, he has found the net seven times from the penalty spot.

    Haaland sits Upamecano down

Erling Haaland picked Dayot Upamecano apart before notching his 12th Champions League goal as Manchester City advanced to the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, Sports Brief reported.

The Norwegian’s goal helped City reach the last four with an aggregate scoreline of 4-1, booking a tantalizing date with record holders Real Madrid, who bundled Chelsea out of the competition the previous day.

Bayern players allegedly distant themselves from Sadio Mane after he lip punched teammate, Sane

Following his confrontation with teammate Leroy Sane at the Etihad Stadium, Senegal international Sadio Mane has lost the support of Bayern Munich players, according to Sky Sports.

Following Bayern Munich’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City in the first leg of the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, Sadio Mane is accused of punching Leroy Sane in the lip.

The incident led to the Senegalese being banned for one game hence his absence in Bayern’s Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Sky Sports has now reported the Bayern Munich players were disappointed about the incident because they expected Sadio to Mane better and has since distanced themselves from him.

“He is seen very critically inside now and because of that behavior, a lot of players in the team that I have spoken to have distance themselves from him (Sadio Mane),” Sky Sports reported.

The report also added that the club will most likely let Sadio Mane go in the summer for his behavior.

“I can say that he is a candidate for sale in the summer because of high salary and also I heard that Thomas Tuchel has no real plans of working with him in the summer,” the report added.

Guardiola praises the’special connection’ between Haaland and De Bruyne

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne scored the eighth Premier League goal of the year, and Pep Guardiola praised their “special connection” after the game.

The two played a crucial role in City’s 3-1 victory over mediocre Leicester City on Saturday.

Haaland equaled Mohamed Salah’s record for the most goals in a season (38 games) by scoring twice to bring his league total to 32.

His second goal came when he latched onto a precise De Bruyne throughball, marking the eighth time the Belgium international has teed up a Haaland strike in the top flight this term.

That is one off the joint record of nine, shared by Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min and ex-Liverpool forwards Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler.

“I think the connection between Erling and Kevin is obvious,” Guardiola said. “I think Kevin needs the runners to do his biggest quality.

“Erling needs an assist player to make his positive runs. It’s a natural way. We talk a lot about ‘take a look at him when he runs and put the ball there’.

“When the ball is correct, and he has this space, he is unstoppable. We know it. But they have a special connection and you can see this.

“But what I like about that second goal is Kevin won the duel. I love that. He won the duel and after that, the run and finish from Erling was fantastic.”

De Bruyne’s eight assists to Haaland is three more than any other Premier League player has managed to a team-mate this term, with Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes having set up Marcus Rashford on five occasions.

Victory over Leicester, combined with Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against West Ham, means City are just four points off the Gunners with a game in hand.

The title rivals will meet on April 26, in what looks set to be the decisive clash.

  • Thierry Henry-Haaland difference: ‘Henry has got something, Haaland’s not amazing – Kolo Toure

Thierry Henry-Haaland difference: ‘Henry has got something, Haaland’s not amazing – Kolo Toure

Kolo Toure, a former defender for Manchester City and Arsenal, has explained the distinction between Erling Haaland, a hot-shot striker, and his former teammate Thierry Henry.

The Norwegian attacker tied Mohamed Salah’s record for most goals in a single season with his 32nd Premier League goal against Leicester City.

Haaland, who scored twice against the Foxes, needs two more goals to tie the 34 goals per season records held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

The 22-year-old’s performances has seen him draw comparisons with some of the greats to ever play in the Premier League, including Thierry Henry.

While analyzing the qualities of the Man City forward, Toure revealed where Haaland lacked in comparison with Henry.

“For me when I look at him he is strong, powerful. Technically, he is not unbelievable. You can see his feet is not amazing but what he does is that when he is in the box, he always makes sure he is in the right position, very aggressive and makes double movement in his run.

He fakes you to go forward and stays back and sometimes fakes you to stay back and he moves upfront,” Toure told Sky Sports.

“For me Thierry Henry had something, if you feed him great. If you don’t, he will come back take the ball, dribble one or two players and score. I don’t think Haaland has that. Very rarely, you see him take the ball and attack tow players and score.”

Toure and Henry were part of the Arsenal invincible team that won the league title in 2003/04 season.

    Haaland equals Salah’s record

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Erling Haaland continued with his fine goalscoring form after he bagged a first-half brace against Leicester City on April 15.

The Manchester City striker scored from the penalty spot before chipping the ball over Daniel Iversen to add to John Stones’ early opener.

Haaland’s goals took him to 32 goals for the campaign, equalling Mohamed Salah’s best season goal tally that he set in the 2017/2018 season.

He captioned the pictures, “Me and my magic potion.”

It’s uncertain if this revelation will help beleaguered defenders in any way, but at this stage anything must be worth a go.

The giant striker has already bagged 30 Premier League goals this term and has the single-season record of 34 goals seemingly within his grasp.

WHAT NEXT FOR HAALAND AND MILK?

The Norwegian will be licking his cream-covered lips at the prospect of facing struggling Leicester City at the the Etihad on Saturday evening.

    Harry Kane — 41 goals (2017-18)

Harry Kane was at the peak of his powers in the 2017-18 season as Tottenham secured a third-placed finish.

Thirty of the No10’s 41 goals that term came in the Premier League and the expert finisher never went more than four games without netting.

The England skipper hit back-to-back hat-tricks in the league and scored seven times in the Champions League despite being eliminated at the last-16 stage.

Andrew Cole’s form in the 1993-94 season was a spectacle and he walked away as the top goalscorer and assist king as Newcastle finished behind Blackburn and Manchester United in the standings.

His 34 league goals came at a time when clubs played 42 matches across a campaign but his consistency was unmatched in Toon’s first season in the rebranded top flight.

Strikes against United, Liverpool and Arsenal were essential in helping the Magpies qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time since the 1970s.

Before his famous move to Real Madrid in 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo had United fans on the edge of their seats every weekend as he emerged as one of football’s top talents.

The Portuguese icon scored 31 league goals in 34 appearances in the 2007-08 campaign, which saw the Red Devils claim the Premier League, Champions League and Community Shield.

His iconic free-kick against Portsmouth was the pick of the bunch in a season where Ronaldo also grabbed eight goals in Europe and three in the FA Cup.

    Mohamed Salah — 44 goals (2017-18)

Mohamed Salah tallied a mindblowing 44 goals in the 2017-18 season and only scored three or more in a match once.

His season was marred by the shoulder injury he picked up in the Champions League final against Real Madrid after scoring 10 times on the way to the showpiece.

And despite the Egyptian racking up 32 Premier League goals, the Reds could only finish fourth in the table.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is remembered as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous strikers and his 44-goal campaign in 2002-03 supports that claim.

The Dutch dynamo scored in all four competitions for United and netted 14 times in Europe as he helped guide his club from the qualifying round to the Champions League quarter-finals.

His run of scoring in eight consecutive league matches at the end of the season included a goal against rivals Arsenal and two hat-tricks as the No10 collected the Golden Boot alongside his league winner’s medal.

    Erling Haaland — 45 goals (2022-23)

So far, the No9 has netted 30 goals in 27 league appearances and 11 times in just seven Champions League outings — with five of his European strikes coming on one night against RB Leipzig.

Haaland memorably grabbed back-to-back hat-tricks in the league against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest as he put down a statement of intent.

His goal against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night saw him become the most prolific striker across a single campaign in the top flight.

Thomas Tuchel warns Pep says not ‘ over until we are in shower’ ahead of reverse tie

Thomas Tuchel has adopted a combative attitude regarding Bayern Munich’s chances of reaching the Champions League semifinals.

In the opening leg of their Champions League quarterfinal match, Tuchel watched helplessly as Bayern Munich was dismantled by a ruthless Manchester City team.

Before goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland in the second half gave the Citizens a commanding advantage going into the rematch in Munich, Bayern’s resistance was finally broken by a beautiful curling shot from Rodri, according to Eurosport.

Reflecting on the result, Tuchel, who was handling his fourth game since replacing Julian Nagelsmann as Bayern boss, argued his side were unlucky.

“It will not be over until we are in the shower.” The 49-year-old tactician highlighted Rodri’s goal as the catalyst for their misfortune on Tuesday night. “If City gets this sort of goal, it gets really, really difficult,” said the Bayern boss.

“The reaction was great during the first half. In the second half, it was even better. In the period where the goal could give us a huge boost of confidence, the opposite happened.”

    Talking points from Bayern’s loss

It was reported that Manchester City versus Bayern Munich was definitely the pick of the quarterfinal ties, and the game did live up to its billing.

With a semifinal spot up for grabs, Pep Guardiola’s charges produced a masterclass performance to keep their search for the Champions League alive.

The overwhelming result shifts the game in favour of Man City ahead of the reverse tie at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.

Pep hails Silva as his ‘special player’ after City’s victory over Bayern

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, praised midfielder Bernardo Silva for his outstanding performance in the team’s victory over Bayern Munich.

The Citizens easily defeated Germany by a score of 3-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, and they will have the upper hand when the teams meet again.

Before the halfway point, Spanish ace Rodri unleashed a breathtaking left-footed shot into the top corner to start the scoring.

But it was Silva’s rare headed goal that was even more unexpected as he doubled City’s advantage, with Erling Haaland adding a third shortly after.

The 28-year-old was given the nod over Riyad Mahrez, who had started in the last two Premier League matches and his contributions were of the highest class at the Etihad.

After the game, his manager could not help but rave about the midfielder, who had the beating of Alphonso Davies all night.

He said: “He is one of the best players I have trained in my life. He’s special.

“Bernardo Silva is a football player. What does it mean? He will play everywhere because he understands the game. Bernardo has the ability to read.

“But Bernardo is such an important player in these type of games. He can play holding midfield, false nine, he scores recently a lot of goals.

“He is a player if you say play in this position, he understands everything.”

It may have looked like a comfortable night for the hosts, but Guardiola insists that he is “emotionally destroyed” after such a tough match.

He said: “It was not comfortable. I’m emotionally destroyed. I’ve aged 10 more years today.

“It was such a demanding game. Now I have to relax, a day off for the guys, then prepare for Leicester.

“I knew exactly what we had to do. If you don’t perform really well, Bayern are able to score one, two or three.

“It’s an incredible result, but we have to play our game with a huge, huge personality over there.

“I know what this win means, but we’re going there to score goals and to try to win the game.”

City-Bayern clash: Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano’s abysmal defence subjects him to harsh trolls from fans

After Dayot Upamecano’s awful performance in his team’s 3-0 hammering against Manchester City, football fans have rushed to social media to lambast the defender for Bayern Munich.

Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Erling Haaland scored on Tuesday night to give Pep Guardiola’s team a foot in the semifinal.

In significant part, Upamecano is also to blame for the English giants’ success since he was unable to restrain the City’s attackers’ fierce intensity.

According to the Daily Star, the Frenchman was rightfully held responsible for the English team’s second goal, which effectively ended the match midway through the second half because of his expensive mistake.

Jack Grealish dispossessed Upamecano as he attempted to dribble out from the back, before backheeling the ball into the path of a charging Haaland.

The Norwegian then raced into the huge space inside the penalty box before chipping the ball to Silva at the back post, who nodded it in.

    Fans troll Tuchel after loss

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich manager, Thomas Tuchel has also been trolled heavily on social media after his side were humbled by Man City.

The Bavarians were put to the sword by a vicious Citizens side, who put three past them in the first leg of their Champions League last eight tie.

Sports Brief reported that it would take a mighty miracle for Tuchel’s charges to overturn the scoreline when both sides clash next Wednesday.

    Takeaways from Bayern’s defeat

Sports Brief also reported on Man City versus Bayern Munich being the pick of the quarter-final ties and the game certainly living up to its billing. With a semi-final spot up for grabs, Pep Guardiola’s charges produced a masterclass performance to keep their search for the Champions League alive.

The Man City boss appeared to have mapped out a strategy which dealt with Tuchel, a man touted as the Spaniard’s kryptonite, in the first leg of the tie.

  • Manchester City grounds Bayern Munich in a 3-0 clash

Manchester City grounds Bayern Munich in a 3-0 clash

With a 3-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s previous team Bayern Munich in the last-eight first leg on Tuesday, Manchester City made a significant step towards the Champions League semifinals.

In a tense match at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola faced Bayern for the first time since leaving Germany, and he easily defeated Thomas Tuchel, whose Chelsea team defeated City in the 2021 final.

At the half, Rodri’s spectacular first Champions League goal gave City the advantage. Bernardo Silva then added the second as pressure mounted on the Bayern goal in the final 20 minutes, and Erling Haaland’s 45th goal of the season—a Premier League player record—soon after.

Guardiola and City have let slip all manner of leads in this competition against weaker opposition than Bayern, but they were rampant by full-time and head into the return match with full command of the tie.

The breakthrough goal came after 27 minutes as Rodri evaded pressure from Jamal Musiala by chopping onto his left foot 25 yards from goal before curling high past Yann Sommer, and City went in pursuit of a swift second.

Both Dayot Upamecano and Sommer failed to deal with a cross from the City right, with the goalkeeper merely helping it into the path of Ilkay Gundogan but responding with an instinctive save.

Although Leroy Sane led a response as his shot wide before half-time was followed by three on target following the restart – the best of them drawing a low stop from Ederson – the mix-ups in the Bayern back line only increased in number as the match wore on.

Sommer saved from Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias in quick succession but failed to get enough on Silva’s header after Upamecano had gifted the ball to Jack Grealish to set in motion the City attack.

Another stop from Julian Alvarez looked to have kept Bayern in the tie, yet Haaland got his goal from a John Stones knockdown to leave the Bundesliga giants an almighty task back in Germany.

What does it mean? City blow away brittle Bayern

Only City in Europe’s top five leagues enjoy more possession on average than Bayern, who looked to dominate the ball at the Etihad, too, and did so in a sense – finishing with a 55.9 per cent share of the play.

But this approach merely played into City’s hands, with Bayern’s determination to play out from the back creating issues under intense pressure from Grealish, Haaland and Co.

Upamecano’s mistake in the build-up to Silva’s goal was the first Bayern error leading to a goal in the Champions League this season, but it could have been repeated more than once and could yet be in the second leg.

    Sommer sloppy and sublime

Evidence of Bayern’s woes at the back came in the form of Sommer’s five clearances, the most by a goalkeeper in a Champions League game this season. That was a competition high achieved more by mistake than design, repeatedly rushed by City attackers with one hack teeing up a Haaland shot inside the box.

Yet Sommer also did more than most in keeping the score down. He made six saves, with the last of them from a Rodri header – after Haaland’s goal – protecting the remnants of Bayern hope.

    Silva reward for winger’s work

Haaland beat Bayern for the first time in his career and scored to make yet more history in doing so, but he operated largely outside of the limelight.

No scorer could have been more deserving than Silva, who netted with his only shot but played three key passes – including for Rodri’s blockbuster – and, most notably, led City with eight tackles. It was clear why he was chosen to play on the same wing as Alphonso Davies and Sane.

    What’s next?

Ahead of next week’s return leg, City host Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday, three hours after Bayern kick off against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.

Understudy Alvarez has up his game at City despite Haalands shine

Man City’s Julian Alvarez is stepping up.

While Erling Haaland , City’s goal-scoring machine may be stealing the show at the Etihad, the Norwegian’s backup has consistently demonstrated his ability this season.

A standout performance against Liverpool earlier this month after replacing Haaland was followed by a cameo appearance from the bench in Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing of Southampton.

An eye-catching display when he came in for Haaland against Liverpool earlier this month was followed by a cameo from the bench in Saturday’s 4-1 demolition of Southampton.

The striker, 23, netted in both of those games to take his Premier League tally to seven, while he has also bagged two in the Champions League and three in the FA Cup as City chase glory on three fronts.

Ahead of tonight’s showdown with Bayern Munich, we reflect on the increasing importance of the Argentine assassin to Pep Guardiola’s side.

In the absence of an injured Haaland, Alvarez started against Liverpool and did not miss a beat.

The Cordoba native kick-started City’s comeback victory by tucking home a Jack Grealish cross before finding Riyad Mahrez in space with a stunning cross-field pass that led to a second.

    There was more to come.

It was Alvarez’s goal-bound effort — stopped by Alisson — that fell to the feet of Ilkay Gundogan, who smashed in a third to all but kill the game.

City went on to win 4-1 and would repeat that scoreline against the hapless Saints, who had the returning Haaland to deal with before Alvarez replaced him after 69 minutes.

    Pep talk

City boss Guardiola applauded Alvarez’s ability to fill in for Haaland after his side disposed of the Reds on April 1.

He said: “When we have Erling, we have something special. And Julian is something special, too.

“[He] scored a perfect goal, the action was brilliant, [then] the vision in the second one to play in Riyad. He was involved in the first three goals.

“He was so clever with the ball, he’s an exceptional player. The club made an exceptional signing with him — he’s a world champion alongside Lionel Messi because he has something.”

Alvarez joined City in January 2022 but finished last season with River Plate before packing his bags for Manchester.

And the Etihad faithful will happily tell you, his contributions off the ball make him a different proposition to Haaland.

The 20-cap international is an aggressive presser and he also enjoys getting involved in build-up play, creating pockets of space for team-mates to attack and pass into.

As someone who is no stranger to finding the net, former Liverpool and England striker Peter Crouch has been impressed by what he has seen from Alvarez.

He said: “I think he gets into every other Premier League team in the country.

“Because he’s behind Haaland, he’s not had the games he would have liked.

“But he’s a constant menace. He’s constantly on the move, he’s unselfish, he draws players towards him, he works hard.

“He’s got everything. He’s a team player and he chips in with goals.”

Erling Haaland’s new look awes fans

Fans were awed by Norwegian attacker Erling Haaland’s unusual hairstyle during training. Prior to the big game, Haaland was spotted sporting a new braided look. With his two goals against Southampton over the weekend, Haaland has now scored 30 Premier League goals.

Although it’s unclear if he’ll wear the same braids for the Champions League quarterfinal match, it was undoubtedly a departure from his typical hairdo.

On Saturday against Southampton, fans were adamant the Norwegian should sign with a shampoo company after he let down his locks to unveil a majestic look as he made his way down the tunnel.

Haaland would not be the first Man City player to land such a deal either.

Joe Hart, in early 2010, starred as the face of Head & Shoulders’ advertising campaigns, as reported by Daily Star.

    Haaland: Manchester City greatest weapon?

As far as his football is concerned, Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm since moving to Man City in the summer.

Across all competitions, the 22-year-old has scored 44 goals, putting him in line to win the European Golden shoe.

Pep Guardiola will hope Haaland is the lucky charm to break his Champions League duck, as he is yet to win it since leaving Barcelona.

  • 60-goal mark is possible with ‘scary’ Haaland – Shearer

60-goal mark is possible with ‘scary’ Haaland – Shearer

Erling Haaland, a “scary” Manchester City striker who is edging closer to breaking the legendary Newcastle United forward’s Premier League record, can score 60 goals this season, according to Alan Shearer.

In his first season at City, Haaland scored twice in the victory over Southampton on Saturday, bringing his season total across all competitions to 44 goals in 38 appearances.

These are 13 more goals than the next-highest scorer among players in the top five leagues in Europe, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain, who has 31 goals in 35 appearances.

Thirty of Haaland’s goals have come in the Premier League, leaving him just four short of matching Shearer’s record of 34 in a season, which he jointly holds with Andy Cole.

Shearer expects Haaland to surpass that target with time to spare and, with potentially 16 more games to play in all competitions, he believes a bigger milestone is attainable.

“If he can stay fit, Haaland will obliterate the Premier League record I share with Andy Cole of 34 goals in a single season,” Shearer said in his column for The Athletic.

“At his current rate of averages in all competitions, with 44 in 38 appearances, he will storm past 50. Even that may be a disservice to him.

“Who knows, we could even be talking 60 and Dixie Dean territory. Scary.”

Haaland reached 30 Premier League goals in 27 games, doing so in five matches fewer than any other player in the competition’s history.

Only eight players in the English top flight – most recently Jimmy Greaves in 1961 – have scored more than 40 goals in a single league season.

“I wonder how many people thought it was hyperbole when I wrote nearly a year ago that Erling Haaland would score 40 goals in this Manchester City team?” Shearer said.

“City were buying goals – as close as you can get to an absolute, cast-iron guarantee – by adding an exceptional centre-forward to a phenomenally creative side.

“If anything, I was being stingy. Exceptional? He’s almost perfect and that haul of 40 is already in his rearview mirror.”

Haaland’s next opportunity to add to his growing haul will come on Tuesday when City host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has 33 goals in 25 games in the competition, which is also a record for the quickest time to surpass the 30-goal mark in the Champions League.

‘Goal scoring machine’ Haaland gives City title win hope

Erling Haaland scored twice after the break as Manchester City defeated Southampton 4-1 at St. Mary’s to keep their title aspirations alive.

Before Jack Grealish added a second goal after the break, the Norwegian striker opened the scoring with a header on the 45th minute mark.

Sekou Mara was the only visitor who could answer Haaland’s bicycle-kick goal, which gave him the league’s most goals with 30.

That was quickly cancelled out when Kevin De Bruyne drew a penalty, allowing Haaland’s substitute Julian Alvarez to share the glory as he fired in the spot-kick.

One of Haaland’s 28 goals going into Saturday’s contest came in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium in October against a Saints side then managed by Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Two managers later, and with the sides separated by 41 points, Ruben Selles’ men looked to get something started early on a sunny south coast evening when Carlos Alcaraz took possession at the right of the area but found himself without a viable option at the far post as he sent the ball across the face of goal.

City tested Gavin Bazunu inside the first five minutes, Ilkay Gundogan finding Grealish who forced a good save out of the Saints shot-stopper with a drive from 15 yards out.

The visitors were on the brink of danger when an alert Kamaldeen Sulemana intercepted De Bruyne’s short corner inside his own half and broke free with Nathan Ake in hot pursuit.

FA charges Liverpool for circling referee during Man City defeat

The Football Association (FA) has penalised Liverpool for an incident in which their players surrounded the referee during last Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League loss at Manchester City.

At Etihad Stadium, the incident happened in the 34th minute of play with the score tied at one when City midfielder Rodri intentionally fouled Cody Gakpo.

The Spaniard had already been booked for a similar infringement just minutes earlier, but referee Simon Hooper refrained from showing a second yellow, which would have meant a red card.

Diogo Jota, Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk and captain Jordan Henderson ran to the official to query the decision, which has led to The FA charging the club with failing “to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or do not behave in a way which is improper”.

Liverpool have until Wednesday, April 12 to respond to the charge.

Sergio Aguero allegedly hates CR7, claims his goals are ‘just by luck’ and keepers fault

In response to his intriguing assertion that a list of Cristiano Ronaldo’s greatest goals exists, Sergio Aguero has sparked a wave of responses online.

Fans are convinced that Aguero has a problem with the Portuguese phenomenon after hearing him critique Ronaldo’s incredible goals.

Given a showcase of some of the Portuguese star’s best goals, Aguero, who is close friends with Ronaldo’s rival Lionel Messi, appeared less than enthused, according to Givemesport.

The retired Argentina international, who turned out for Manchester City and Barcelona, went a notch higher to claim the outstanding goals scored by the Al-Nassr skipper were a stroke of luck.

Was lucky,” Aguero said, as translated by Sportskeeda. He even added that Ronaldo’s 40-yard strike against FC Porto in the Champions League in 2008 was the goalkeeper’s fault.

Aguero’s comment has since convinced social media users that he was ‘hating’ on the Portuguese veteran.

    Fans claim Aguero hates Ronaldo

@ProudFede took a swipe at Aguero for his take on Ronaldo’s goal compilation: “Sergio Aguero’s biggest achievement was reaching the Quarterfinals with Man City 4 times.

He couldn’t even lace his boots.” @MrFilipeOrlando quizzed how Aguero did not seem to appreciate Ronaldo’s goals: “Even 99% of Ronaldo/Messi FC can appreciate each player’s greatest goals.

Aguero hating on CR7 nonstop is so weird, man.” Aguero’s reaction dumbfounded @perrryyyy: “Aguero said Cristiano Ronaldo’s free kicks are lucky goals and goalkeeper mistakes. 60 free-kick goals? Why is everyone obsessed with Ronaldo?”

@totalzizou slammed Aguero: “No professionalism at all. Some like Messi and others like CR7, but not recognising their greatness is foolish.

You could still be a fan of one and still appreciate the other.”

It was also reported that, Aguero explaining the major difference between his ex-teammate in the Argentina national team, Messi and Portuguese star, Ronaldo.

For more than 10 years now, the respective veterans and their fanbases have been in serious rivalries, with these two players having 11 Ballon d’Or awards between them.

Aguero, a Manchester City and Barcelona legend, has now offered his two pence on the differences between his compatriot and his storied greatest rival.

Arsenal supporters upset at Man City Ace Rodri’s dreadful tackle that eliminated Martin Odegaard

A part of Arsenal supporters have criticised Man City star Rodri for a terrible tackle he made on Marting Odegaard during a Euro match between Spain and Norway.

On Saturday, March 25, the two Premier League players were competing for their respective teams during the international break.

Odegaard, according to Metro UK, had a great chance to start the scoring in the opening minutes of the game after he received a pull-back and fired a left-footed shot.

The Arsenal captain was taken out by Rodri’s late tackle after his shot was blocked before it could reach the goal.

Footage from the incident showed Odegaard immediately rolling around in agony, clutching his ankle before getting up to his knees and appealing to the referee to give a penalty.

The referee, who was not referred to the monitor by VAR, opted against awarding a spot-kick as Spain went on to take a lead moments later via Dani Olmo.

Arsenal fans fume at Rodri Rodri’s awkward challenge on Odegaard did not go down well with Arsenal fans, who quickly hit out at the Man City star for ‘attempting to kill’ the Norwegian midfielder. One wrote: “Absolutely horrible foul from Rodri on Odegaard.

Incredibly, no penalty given! Rodri under Pep’s orders to injure our captain?”

A second noted: “Odegaard denied a clear penalty. Rodri trying to end Arsenal’s title run with a nasty red card challenge. Fuming.”

Another posted: “Rodri’s on a mission to hospitalise that Kevin De Bruyne wannabe.” A fourth raged: “Was Rodri trying to end Odegaard’s season with that tackle?”

Man City’s Haaland to miss Spain and Georgia clash

Erling Haaland, who withdrew from the Norwegian team for their first two Euro 2024 qualifying matches due to a groin injury, will return to Manchester City for medical tests.

Following a five-goal outburst in a 7-0 Champions League thrashing of RB Leipzig, the star striker netted a hat-trick as City defeated Burnley 6-0 at the weekend in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Haaland joined his teammates from Norway as they got ready to play Spain and Georgia, but he won’t be taking part in either of those games.

Team doctor Ola Sand told the Norwegian Football Federation’s website: “We hoped that this would carry over to Saturday but after doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it to the games against Spain and Georgia.

“It is better that he receives medical follow-up at the club.”

Norway boss Stale Solbakken added: “Erling took it hard when he realised that he could not fight for the team.

No conclusive evidence to leave Walker out of England squad – Southgate

“Fortunately, there is still plenty of self-confidence, talent and cohesion in this group to win points in the next matches.”

City will hope the injury is not serious ahead of a busy period following the international break, starting with a crunch Premier League clash at home to Liverpool on April 1 as Pep Guardiola’s side aim to bridge the eight-point gap to leaders Arsenal.

A trip to Southampton then precedes the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at Bayern Munich on April 11.

FA Cup: Haaland works another hat-trick to push Man City to semis

In order to go to the FA Cup semifinals, Manchester City destroyed Vincent Kompany’s Burnley 6-0 with yet another hat-trick from Erling Haaland.

As City mercilessly destroyed the Clarets at the Etihad Stadium, the prolific Norwegian added his sixth treble of the year to his five goals against RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

World Cup champion Julian Alvarez scored twice to celebrate his new deal, and 20-year-old Cole Palmer also scored, but former City captain Kompany had a dreadful homecoming to his former stadium.

A large portion of the buildup to the game had been focused on Kompany, who had a statue outside the stadium and had a dazzling playing career with City, where he won 10 major championships.

The 22-year-old has now scored a remarkable 42 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions this term.

Burnley, the runaway Championship leaders, started confidently and Stefan Ortega was almost caught out as he was rushed into a pass and gifted the ball to Ian Maatsen.

Rico Lewis raced back to avert danger and Ortega made amends somewhat a few moments later when he pushed away a long-range effort from Nathan Tella.

Yet as uneasy as City looked at times in their own half, they were confident and slick at the other end.

Burnley had an escape when Haaland misdirected a header from a Phil Foden cross and it took a good tackle from Jordan Beyer to prevent Alvarez shooting.

Such was City’s quality they could punish Burnley at any moment and a quickfire Haaland double just after the half hour put the game beyond the Clarets.

Haaland was fed on the edge of the area by Alvarez and, although Bailey Peacock-Farrell rushed out, he instinctively poked the ball beyond the keeper.

It was a smart finish but his next just moments later was even sweeter.

This time Foden was the provider after a charge down the left. His low ball into the area arced invitingly for Haaland and he lifted it neatly over Peacock-Farrell.

Burnley tried to respond and Maatsen forced a good save from Ortega just before the interval but City and Haaland were in no mood to relent.

Peacock-Farrell blocked a Riyad Mahrez volley and then beat away a Haaland strike but he could not stem the tide for long.

Haaland completed his treble just before the hour when, as usual, he was in the right place at the right time to pounce on a rebound after Foden hit the post.

He gave Peacock-Farrell no chance as he rifled home and the score quickly became 4-0 as Kevin De Bruyne burst into the area and squared for Alvarez to tap home.

As he was in midweek, Haaland was taken off in the 63rd minute. That meant his contribution for the week totalled eight goals from just 126 minutes of action.

There was still no respite for Burnley as Foden’s cross was pushed into the path of Palmer and the substitute turned in.

The sixth came soon after as Alvarez raced onto a De Bruyne through ball and turned inside Ameen Al-Dakhil to thump home.

City coasted through the final few minutes and can now look forward to another trip to Wembley next month.

Asked to pick between Manchester City and Arsenal for the title, Ferguson, who won the Premier League 13 times with United, gave a wry smile and said: “Not interested”, as quoted on The Mirror.

His response will surely have delighted Manchester United fans, who last tasted Premier League title success in 2013, when Ferguson was managing in his final season with the club.

Scoring goals is my super strength – Haaland

Erling Haaland, a forward for Manchester City, has now scored more goals than any other player in a single season.

The Norwegian forward led his team (City) to an 8-1 aggregate victory over RB Leipzig on Tuesday by playing admirably and scoring five breathtaking goals, including a hat-trick in the first half. As a result, City advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League (UCL).

The 22-year-old is now the player with the fastest and youngest 30 goal streak in 25 UCL games.

He is also the youngest player to score five times in a single Champions League match, joining Argentina star Lionel Messi and Brazil forward Luiz Adriano as the only players to do so.

After the game, the City footballing icon admitted to being worn out after every celebration but was realistic about goal scoring which inspires him to play impressively.

“My super strength is scoring goals,” Haaland told BT Sport.

“A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not. I was so tired after my celebrations.”

The Norwegian forward said he could have scored more goals, however, he missed a lot of chances.

“I could have scored more goals, I missed a lot of chances but the most important thing is to come to chances because when you come to chances, that’s what you want as a striker”, he told CBS Sports.

On Twitter, football fans across the globe have commended the 22-year-old old for his stunning performance and record.

Man City’s Champions League hopes dependent on defence – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola explains why Erling Haaland will not be the deciding factor between Manchester City’s previous Champions League failures and their first title.

City have been repeatedly frustrated in the Champions League, but they have advanced to the quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive year after dominating RB Leipzig, led by Haaland.

The City number nine scored five goals in a 7-0 second-leg win in the last 16 on Tuesday, securing an 8-1 aggregate victory.

In the process, Haaland broke a number of records, including setting a new club record with 39 goals this season.

But these unprecedented goalscoring feats will not be enough to make City champions of Europe if they do not defend better than in previous seasons, Guardiola insisted.

Asked if Haaland’s involvement could be pivotal, the City manager told BT Sport: “I don’t think so. The reason why is we conceded a lot of goals that we gave to the opponent.

“We scored four goals against Real Madrid, we scored six goals against Monaco, we scored four goals against Tottenham, and all the time we were out, because we conceded the goals. We could absolutely avoid it.

“Right now, we defended really well. The goals we have scored all the time in all the seasons.

“But of course having someone like Erling, like Julian [Alvarez], like we had with Sergio [Aguero] before or Gabriel [Jesus], who has the instinct to score the goals… in this competition, in one moment, he can score. It’s important.”

Haaland scored five goals from eight shots, all of which hit the target, before being substituted with 27 minutes to play, denied the chance to become the first man to net a double hat-trick in the Champions League.

“It was five in 60 minutes, no more than that. If he played 90 minutes… I don’t know,” Guardiola said.

“He’s an incredible guy. He has the power, the mentality, he’s a serial winner.”

  • Champions League would define Man City’s reign – Guardiola

Champions League would define Man City’s reign – Guardiola

No matter how many times his team wins the Premier League, Pep Guardiola acknowledges that the success in the Champions League will define his time as manager of Manchester City. Tuesday’s second leg of City’s Champions League last-16 tie against Bundesliga powerhouse Leipzig will be played with the goal of reaching the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season.

Despite being held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Guardiola’s team is expected to advance in front of their home crowd at the Etihad Stadium.

The quest to end City’s wait to win the top club competition in Europe for the first time inspires and frustrates Guardiola at the same time.

The 52-year-old has won the Premier League four times, four League Cups, and  FA Cup during his remarkably successful seven years in Manchester.

Yet for all his domestic glory with City, it is the Champions League that remains the holy grail. .

Guardiola won the Champions League twice as Barcelona boss, in 2009 and 2011, but failed to repeat that success in his three years with Bayern Munich.

City lost to Chelsea in the 2021 final but have also endured a series of agonising exits from the knockout stages, with last season’s astonishing late collapse against Real Madrid in the semi-finals an especially bitter blow.

Asked if his time at City would be judged solely on his European achievements, Guardiola told reporters: “Yes. It doesn’t mean I agree with that but absolutely we will be judged by this competition.” However, he believes City’s gradual progress from outsiders to established members of Europe’s elite under his leadership deserves more respect.

“Since day one when I arrived, sitting here for the first time, they (the media) asked me ‘Are you here to win the Champions League?’” he said. “I said ‘What? If you are manager of Real Madrid maybe I accept that.’

But I accept it here. It’s not going to change.” ‘Try again’ City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is adamant the Guardiola era should still be deemed a success despite the failure so far to land the Champions League title.

“Every year we have been close, quarters, semis, final. We just haven’t done the last bit. We are going to try again,” he said. “If you care about the noise then obviously it’s going to annoy you. I know we haven’t won it but we have done really well. “I know people only judge on if you win it, but there have been a lot of circumstances.

” With City trailing five points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League, the Champions League is even more important for Guardiola’s team this season.

For City to win the Premier League or Champions League, they will need Erling Haaland at his best. Haaland scored the penalty winner at Crystal Palace on Saturday to reach 34 goals in all competitions this season.

There are still critics of Haaland’s lack of involvement in City’s build-up play and Guardiola believes the Norway striker can improve that side of his game. “I don’t like one player just to be in the box to score goals. Of course that is important, it is the main thing, but it is not all we need of him,” Guardiola said.

“When we are away from the opponent’s box he cannot score a goal. We need him to be involved and to be active. “He has improved a little bit but on this he can do better.”

  • 3 Arsenal players miss training prior to their Europa League showdown

3 Arsenal players miss training prior to their Europa League showdown

When Arsenal plays Sporting Lisbon on March 9 at 8 p.m., a number of important players may be absent. The first of the round of 16 Europa League matches between the two groups is scheduled to take place at Stadio Jose Alvalade.

The Gunners are on a scorching run of form, especially in the Premier League, where they have won 20 of their last 26 games.

Leandro Trossard, Eddie Nketiah, and Kieran Tierney are not expected to travel to Sporting Lisbon with the Premier League’s top team, according to Metro UK.

Trossard is understood to be battling a groin injury suffered during his side’s 3-2 epic comeback win over Bournemouth. Nketiah, meanwhile, is said to be having an ankle problem, with Tierney out with illness. Arsenal get Jesus boost Despite the absence of the trio, Arsenal have been boosted by the return of Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus has been out injured since the World Cup and was forced to have knee surgery to help his recovery. The Brazilian forward has missed the better part of the second half of the 2022/23 season as he worked his way to full fitness.

However, the former Man City ace is closing in on a return to action after he was spotted in Arsenal training ahead of the Sporting Lisbon clash.

It remains to be seen if the star forward will be involved in the match. Jorginho’s mum reduced to tears Earlier, Sports Brief reported that a video of Jorginho’s mother getting emotional after she spotted the midfielder’s shirt in the Arsenal dressing room has emerged.

Jorginho sealed a sensational move to the Emirates during the January transfer window, swapping Chelsea for Arsenal.

Jorginho’s mum, Maria Tereza Freitas, recently travelled to London from Brazil to visit her star son. It was during the visit that she was given a trip around Arsenal, Jorginho’s newest home, for weeks now.

  • Brighton star Mac Allister targetted by City

Brighton star Mac Allister targetted by City

The Daily Star reports that Alexis MacAllister, a star for Brighton, is a potential transfer target for Manchester City.

Since he returned from Qatar with a World Cup winner’s medal, the midfield wizard has been linked with a move away from the Seagulls, and Pep Guardiola could seize the opportunity when the transfer window opens.

The South Coast side’s 24-year-old Mac Allister has played in 19 Premier League matches this season, and he has five goals to his name as Roberto De Zerbi’s team keeps winning.

With two games remaining, Brighton, who is currently ranked eighth, has a chance to pass Fulham and Liverpool.

And the Argentina international has been a key part of a high-pressing setup that has seen the club pick up impressive wins over Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in 2022-23.

Guardiola believes the midfielder would be the perfect addition to his world-class squad and would be willing to meet Brighton’s £70 million valuation.

The Spaniard is keen to freshen up his squad after a mediocre season so far has left the champions chasing Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Mac Allister’s contract runs until 2025, putting the Seagulls in control of the situation ahead of what is set to be another busy summer of spending for most clubs.

  • Ederson hits out at Norwegian’s critics

Ederson hits out at Norwegian’s critics

Manchester City needs a striker, and claims that Erling Haaland only scores “easy” goals are “a lie,” according to his teammate Ederson.

Since joining City from Borussia Dortmund last year, Haaland has scored 32 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions, which is more than any other player from one of the top five leagues in Europe.

In the Premier League, he has scored 26 goals, but the 22-year-old has recently come under fire as City struggles to overtake Arsenal and Manchester United in the race for the championship.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said Haaland “might have picked the wrong club,” while Arsenal great Thierry Henry speculated that Tottenham’s Harry Kane might have been a better fit for City.

However, Ederson believes Haaland is well-suited to City’s style, though he acknowledges Pep Guardiola’s men have had to adapt to his characteristics.

“When he arrived, we said he was going to score a lot—and that’s been happening.” “He is a brilliant goalscorer; he always looks to score and help the team,” Ederson told UEFA.com.

“He is the striker we needed because, in comparison to Gabriel [Jesus], they are different players.” Gabi likes to come in from out wide; he is stronger and more versatile. Haaland plays more centrally, looking to get into the box, he is a target in the area.

“That has been the major difference. When you get into the final third you have someone who will always be in the area.

“Many people say most of the goals he scores are easy—but that is a lie.” It’s his positioning—that’s his best ability. He doesn’t score easy goals, he positions himself very well.

“I hope he continues to score many goals, making us happy, and we’ll keep working together for all the titles.”

City return to Champions League action when they visit RB Leipzig for the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday, and with Haaland netting 28 times in 23 appearances in the competition throughout his career, the club hope his finishing ability will help deliver their first European crown.

Ederson is in no doubt as to the importance of continental success to City, saying: “That’s our main objective, the main objective of the club.

“We’ve been trying [to win it] and will carry on trying. We haven’t won it yet, we reached the final [in 2021], and a few semi-finals, and we didn’t come out of it with a good result.

“But I think this year, we’re more than capable of getting to the final and challenging for the title.

“Now this title is what the club needs, it’s what we athletes need and it’s what Guardiola needs here at the club, too. This year, we’re going to try. We’re going after it.”

Haaland scored six goals in four appearances against Leipzig during his time with Dortmund, averaging a goal every 60 minutes against them.

  • Guardiola bemoans Man City’s distasteful finishing in draw with Forest

Guardiola bemoans Man City’s distasteful finishing in draw with Forest

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, lamented his team’s wastefulness in front of goal as Nottingham Forest held them to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

After being ousted by Arsenal earlier on Saturday, the defending champions appeared poised to reclaim first place in the Premier League courtesy to Bernardo Silva’s outstanding first-half goal.

Chris Wood, though, made a late appearance to deny them all three points, allowing Forest to avoid a loss to the reigning champions for the first time since they defeated Manchester United in December 1994.

City squandered a host of glorious opportunities to extend their lead before Wood’s intervention, with Erling Haaland guilty of one particularly glaring miss, and Guardiola was disappointed with his side’s profligacy.

“Congratulations to Nottingham for the point that they got,” the City boss said.

“It was a brilliant performance, we played really good but we didn’t score. We have to score and we didn’t do it and that’s why we dropped points.

“For the goal we could defend better, more energy but the way we played was brilliant.

“In the first half, it should be already be two- or three-zero, we conceded one shot on target and we dropped points.

“It’s sad and disappointing but the way we played was really good.”

The result meant City have failed to beat a promoted side in the Premier League for the first time since April 2021 when they lost against Leeds United – they had won nine such games in a row before the draw with Forest.

City defender Kyle Walker was less diplomatic than his manager, stating that City’s failure to take all three points back to Manchester was “unacceptable”.

“First and foremost, we go to the Emirates [where they beat Arsenal in midweek] and play the game we did and then come here, it [the performance] is unacceptable,” he said.

“If we want to compete with teams near the top, we need to win. We missed a few chances and we need to do better as a team.

“Sometimes it’s football and sometimes it’s emotion. Every game should be treated the same, like a cup final. What can I say other than it is unacceptable. We have to stick together as a group.

“The senior members of the team need to put our thoughts across. That is just not acceptable. We have to give credit to Nottingham Forest. They dug in and hung on. We have to do better.”

  • Partey to miss game against Guardiola’s Man City

Partey to miss game against Guardiola’s Man City

Thomas Partey would miss Arsenal’s match against Manchester City, and this is a major blow to the team.

The Ghanaian has been an essential member of the Gunners team that has dominated the Premier League standings for the majority of the season.

Mikel Arteta will have to get by without him on Wednesday night even though he has played in all but three of their league games this season.

Partey won’t be playing against City because of a muscular issue, according to The Athletic.

The 29-year-old took part in Tuesday’s training session with his teammates, but a new injury prevents him from playing on Wednesday night at the Emirates Stadium.

Additionally, he might not play in Saturday’s matchup with Aston Villa.

These developments might herald Jorginho’s first start for the team since his January transfer from Chelsea.

With so much on the line, Partey’s absence may be a major setback for the Gunners.

  • Finance expert warns Man City probe may lead to rivals facing scrutiny

Finance expert warns Man City probe may lead to rivals facing scrutiny

Premier League clubs have become “incentivised to sometimes push the rules to the limit, if not beyond” and Manchester City may not be the only team to face an investigation into their affairs, according to a leading football finance expert.

The Premier League announced on Monday it had referred a number of alleged breaches of the competition’s rules to an independent commission, with some of those dating back as far at the 2009-10 season.

In response, City said they had “irrefutable evidence” that would be presented in their defence against the accusations.

Kieran Maguire, author of the book The Price of Football, said isolating City could be seen as making a “scapegoat” of the Premier League champions, and he suspects investigators will also look closely at the finances of other clubs.

Speaking to Stats Perform, Maguire said: “Certainly we have seen some clubs, in terms of the financial submissions that they’ve made, make fairly significant claims as to the impact, for example, that COVID had on their finances, and they’ve claimed that COVID cost them money in a myriad of ways, some of which have certainly raised eyebrows as far as observers are concerned.

“So if Manchester City are charged, you would think that Manchester City would say to the Premier League, ‘well, you’ve investigated us and charged us, then surely you have a responsibility to do this for other clubs as well’.

“If the Premier League don’t do that, it could be seen that they’re trying to make a scapegoat of Manchester City, who are unpopular with certain other elements of the English football establishment because they represent new money, and old money doesn’t like new money in all aspects of life, it doesn’t have to be sport.

“Therefore you can understand why there’s likely to perhaps be enthusiasm for this to move on. And that’s going to be bad news for football as a whole because then it becomes who’s got the best lawyers, and the best accountants, as opposed to who’s got the best strikers and centre-halves and midfield players.”

If the independent commission finds City to have breached financial guidelines, they could face a variety of punishments, ranging from fines to points penalties, or even expulsion from the league.

City are controlled by the City Football Group, which is owned by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Since a 2008 takeover, the club have invested heavily in infrastructure and players to develop the dominant team in England.

It remains to be seen how City come out of this saga, if found to have transgressed.

“There’s a lot of politics in English football,” said Maguire. “I think that the preferred punishment would be a points deduction, because the argument would be that if it was just a financial punishment, given the wealth of the owners, given that it is effectively a sovereign wealth fund which is the benefactors of Manchester City, that a financial penalty would not actually particularly harm the club.

“Therefore, you need to do something which would be seen within football itself as being a punishment, and also acting as a deterrent should any other clubs with equally benevolent owners decide to take or consider a similar action.”

Maguire said City face jealousy and “resentment” from rival clubs, and he believes there would not be such interest if a smaller Premier League club came under the microscope.

“It’s because it is Manchester City who have won the Premier League for four years out of the last five, who have reached the Champions League final, who have spent around about $1.3billion in building their squad, that we’re having this conversation,” Maguire said.

“There is jealousy, there is resentment, there is envy. And there’s not a lot of admiration, because football doesn’t operate like that. Football is a very, very snarky business, where everybody’s trying to put each put other clubs down.

“Changing the culture of football into one of ethics, morality, sustainability, is very difficult because of the nature of the people that own the clubs. They tend to be very successful in their own right. And therefore, they are used to getting their own way.

“And in the world of sport, you can’t have 20 Premier League clubs all being successful at the same time. Therefore, they’re incentivised to outmanoeuvre each other, and they’re incentivised to sometimes push the rules to the limit, if not beyond the limit.”

Maguire said world governing body FIFA, having been tarnished by scandal itself in recent years, was “unlikely to be in a position to take a moral high ground”.

“And it then just simply becomes a game of whack-a-mole, as the authorities find one loophole, they bring a sticking plaster to solve it,” Maguire said. “And then you’re always in a room with a smarter accountant and a smarter lawyer who will come up with yet another scheme.”

  • Man City charged for breaching financial rules by Premier League

Man City charged for breaching financial rules by Premier League

Manchester City claims they are “surprised” to be facing multiple alleged financial rule violations from the Premier League.

The alleged violations are said to have occurred between the 2009–10 season and the 2017–18 season.

The club are alleged to have breached league rules requiring provision “in utmost good faith” of “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position”.

The league says the accurate financial information required related to “revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs”.

The second set of breaches listed refers to alleged breaking of rules “requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager” related to seasons 2009-10 to 2012-13 inclusive.

The club’s failure to adhere to UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations between 2013 and 2018 prompted the Premier League to send City to the independent commission.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned City’s two-year ban from playing in European football in 2020 as a result of these violations. Despite refusing to comply, the team was only fined €10 million and was still permitted to participate in UEFA’s international club competitions.

Additionally, it is alleged that City broke Premier League rules pertaining to sustainability and profitability in the 2015–16, 2016–17, and 2017–18 seasons.

The fourth set of alleged breaches relates to the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules in seasons 2015-16 to 2017-18 inclusive.

Finally, the club are alleged to have breached league rules requiring member clubs to co-operate with and assist the Premier League with its investigations, from December 2018 to date.

The Premier League – which opened its investigation in March 2019 – has referred the alleged offences to an independent commission.

In a statement, the Premier League said: “In accordance with Premier League rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today [February 6 2023] referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League rules by Manchester City Football Club to a commission under Premier League rule W.3.4.

  • Haaland seeks to part ways with Man City over ‘anger’ at Guardiola

Haaland seeks to part ways with Man City over ‘anger’ at Guardiola

According to reports, Erling Haaland is prepared to “divorce” from Man City since he and Pep Guardiola have a “poor atmosphere” and a “very distant” relationship.

The strong striker only recently joined Man City in the summer. His £51 million release clause was triggered in order for them to sign him away from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

This season, Haaland has been in sensational goal-scoring form with the reigning Premier League champions. In just 27 games this season across all competitions, he has scored 31 goals for them.

However, others have boldly asserted that Haaland has rendered Man City weaker this season as they chase Arsenal for the title.

Guardiola’s had to modify their style for Haaland, and even while they don’t always succeed, they’re really terrifying to watch when they’re in full flow.

But according to the Spanish publication National, Haaland and Guardiola’s friendship is “beginning to shatter.”

According to the source, Guardiola is making life difficult for himself this season since “a number of players have accused him of being the main blame for the terrible atmosphere now prevailing.”

Then they make a reference to Joao Cancelo Guardiola being “weary” prior to his loan move to Bayern Munich last month. Bernardo Silva’s current plans are to leave in the upcoming months as well.

However, the “big bombshell” is that Haaland has a “very distant relationship” with Guardiola. Putting two and two together, they suspect this is because he is “very unhappy with the style of play proposed by City”.

The report adds that this “could ultimately lead to an irreconcilable divorce with Guardiola and his subsequent departure”. How dramatic.

Not surprising, National then goes on to link Haaland with Real Madrid, who are ‘very vigilant’ about his situation.

The forward’s ‘anger’ at Guardiola is ‘incredible news’ for Real Madrid as president Florentino Perez believes he is the ‘best possible successor to Karim Benzema’.

The Spanish giants could well choose to “wait patiently” until Haaland’s €200m release clause kicks in in 2024.

Last month, Ben Jacobs reported that Haaland’s release clause “can only be triggered by clubs outside the Premier League”.

“Obviously the more he succeeds the more interest he will attract but it is not true that there is a Real Madrid specific release clause and Pep Guardiola has denied this on record,” Jacobs wrote for Caught Offside.

“In fact, there is no active release clause in his contract, although things will change a bit in the summer of 2024 when a €200m release clause comes into effect, which can only be triggered by clubs outside the Premier League.

“This will also diminish the longer Haaland stays at Manchester City, but the clause doesn’t mean much – if anyone outside the Premier League wants to trigger it, ideally they still don’t want to comply with its terms.”

  • Cancelo officially joins FC Bayern on loan

Cancelo officially joins FC Bayern on loan

Joao Cancelo, a defender for Manchester City, has been loaned to Bayern Munich till the end of the current campaign.

Cancelo, 28, has not scored or assisted in the Premier League since October. He has been benched for City’s last three games under Pep Guardiola in recent weeks.

Since the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United earlier this month, academy graduate Rico Lewis appears to have replaced Pep Guardiola as his go-to right-back choice.

Cancelo strengthens a Bayern team that has been in a slump, drawing their previous three Bundesliga games, but the Bavarians still lead the German top division after 18 games by one point.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side travel to Mainz on Wednesday for their DFB-Pokal last-16 clash before a trip to Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Portuguese international Cancelo moved to the Etihad from Juventus in 2019 and has twice won the Premier League with the Citizens.

The versatile full-back also won domestic league titles in previous spells at Benfica and Juve and signed a five-year contract last February.

  • Foden excluded from Man City’s squad to face Wolves

Foden excluded from Man City’s squad to face Wolves

In contrast to Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden was noticeably absent from Manchester City’s lineup to face Wolves.

Several British journalists have referred to England player Foden as “not entirely fit,” and manager Pep Guardiola will undoubtedly be questioned about this.

De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte were inserted into the starting lineup that defeated Tottenham 4-2 on Thursday, and Julian Alvarez and Nathan Ake were benched for the match on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Foden’s absence was the primary talking point because he was not utilised during City’s comeback victory over Spurs in the middle of the week after falling behind by two goals.

Foden’s last start came in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, where he was substituted after 57 minutes.

Victory for City against Wolves would move Guardiola’s side two points behind leaders Arsenal, who host Manchester United at Emirates Stadium later on Sunday.

Man City XI: Ederson; Rico Lewis, Manuel Akanji, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte; Ilkay Gundogan, Rodri; Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez; Erling Haaland

  • Onuoha claims Haaland faces fight to maintain goalscoring form

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has said Erling Haaland may struggle to score as many goals over the rest of the season as opponents figure him out.

The Norway international has enjoyed a blistering start to life at the Etihad Stadium, with 23 goals across all competitions since arriving from Borussia Dortmund.

That includes 18 in the Premier League alone, putting him firmly on course to smash the competition’s record single-season tally of 34 with not even half the campaign gone.

But while Onuoha, who played for City between 2004 and 2012, thinks it likely he could rack up an all-time feat, he warns the Leeds-born attacker will likely face sterner opposition following the mid-season break.

“It’s very possible,” he told Stats Perform. “But I think it gets harder the more time that passes in terms of being in the league, because people know how you operate.

“They know they have to have get a better idea of how to stop you, because City with a six-foot four striker is a different look for most teams that played against them for the last six or seven years under [Pep] Guardiola.

“It’s possible if he stays available and City stay dominant. But football is very difficult, especially in the second half of [a] season, where you start to run out of time.

“The moment you start running out of time, the desperation kicks in, and things which maybe would have been easier in the first half of the season [are] a bit more difficult.”

Onuoha feels Haaland has shown he can cope with the pressure amid a lightning start, firing City into the thick of another title race, though the ex-defender also praised Arsenal amid their own surprise charge

“There’s going to be so many more eyes on him because he [is] one of the biggest players in world football, not necessarily the Premier League,” he added. “He’s a talent who’s going to bring eyeballs. He’s been exceptional.

“But I have to give credit to Arsenal, I think Arsenal has been incredible. They’ve dropped five points up to this moment. And in those games, they’ve looked really good.

“It’s very entertaining. Whatever we see now, there’s no guarantee this is how it will finish. I think that’s what makes it so special.”

  • Man City thrashes Sevilla as Haaland scores twice

Manchester City opened their Champions League campaign with an outstanding performance on Tuesday.

They beat Sevilla four goals to nil at the end of the game.

This was possible for Man City due to the efforts of Erling Haaland who made the first goal in the game on the 20th minute, with assistance from De Bruyne.

He also scored his second goal during the 67th minute.

In between, England midfielder Foden had given City a healthy cushion in their Group G opener, teasing his marker Nemanja Gudelj before sweeping a left-foot effort into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Ruben Dias underlined the gulf in class between the Premier League champions and the side that finished fourth in La Liga last term late on, side-footing Joao Cancelo’s cross into the middle of an empty net.

“When they were playing better we scored the second one with a brilliant action from Phil [Foden]. Then after it was easier – we gave more passes,” City manager Pep Guardiola told BT Sport.

“Sometimes we want to rush so quick because Erling is there. You have this attraction of him, we want to attack it sometimes. We have to be more patient. I think his numbers across his career, not just here, is quite similar.

“So he has an incredible sense of goal. We have incredible numbers in scoring goals, so we want to continue like that.”

The manner of City’s victory and final scoreline was not unduly flattering, with the visitors dominant throughout.

Julen Lopetegui’s side looked short of attacking ideas and bereft of confidence after their winless start to the La Liga season.

With John Stones and Kyle Walker missing because of minor injuries Guardiola handed a debut to Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji, but aside from a wild first-half effort from Alejandro Gomez, the hosts barely threatened.

The comprehensive win sends City top of their group, with Borussia Dortmund second on goal difference after beating FC Copenhagen 3-0 in their opening match.

    Haaland’s incredible start continues

City’s only previous trip to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium came almost seven years ago when Wilfried Bony scored in comfortable 3-1 win.

This performance was even more assured, with Guardiola’s side monopolising possession against their hosts who offered little threat to counter.

Predictably Haaland, who is seen by many as the man who can be the final piece of the jigsaw as City chase European glory, came to the fore again.

The forward maintained his incredible start to his City career as he knocked in goals 11 and 12 from his eight appearances for the club.

Neither were remarkable, but both owed to his exceptional ability to read the game and anticipate the cross from De Bruyne, as well as Bounou’s mistake.

Both his finishes were from no more than eight yards out, again underlining his capacity to operate with clinical efficiency from a limited number of touches (19), and they contributed to City’s biggest ever win against Spanish opposition.

  • Pep Guardiola: Man City boss says club sustainable after record player sales income

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola feels sadness at the recent exit of three star players but insists the club’s record transfer income this summer proves they are sustainable.

City sold Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal for £45m and £30m.

Raheem Sterling also departed for Chelsea for £50m as part of an overhaul at the Premier League champions.

The trio were part of all four title-winning campaigns under Guardiola since his arrival in Manchester in 2016.

Seven other players have been sold this summer, including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and Romeo Lavia to Southampton.

“In part I’m a little bit sad that these important players have gone,” said Guardiola. “But it’s a business. To invest you have to sell players otherwise you can’t be sustainable.

“I know the image of the club is that always we buy, buy, buy. But we sell too. We sell important players for big money.

“All the clubs know today selling players is not easy. All clubs want to do it but not everyone can.”

In addition to the player departures already completed, there are decisions to be made over the short-term futures of striker Liam Delap and midfielder James McAtee, while City would also be due a substantial sell-on should Jack Harrison leave Leeds United.

The revenue generated by City this summer is already the most in a single transfer window by a Premier League side.

But there has been significant money spent on players coming into the club, including £45m on England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, £51.2m on Erling Haaland, £14.1m on Julian Alvarez and, potentially, upwards of £30m on Brighton defender Marc Cucurella, who has submitted a transfer request to force the move.

  • Raheem Sterling: Man City forward faces career-defining decision amid Chelsea interest

Raheem Sterling has some big decisions to make.

A month after coming off the bench to be a key figure in Manchester City’s stunning comeback win over Aston Villa that earned him a fourth Premier League title – a ninth domestic honour since he left Liverpool to join the Blues in a £49m deal in 2015 – Sterling is contemplating whether that memorable encounter at Etihad Stadium will prove to be his final appearance for the club.

Teams in Spain have expressed an interest in the 27-year-old, while Chelsea are keen to bring Sterling back to his native London.

Sources close to the player say Sterling, who has a year left on his contract, has had no substantive talks with anyone about his future and is yet to make up his mind which way to go.

It is not a decision to take lightly.

Sterling is about to enter the peak years of his career and wants to get the most out of them. There is also a World Cup in November to consider for the man who was widely considered to be the star performer in England’s run to the European Championship final last summer.

Despite the suggestion of his exit, there has been no fall-out with City boss Pep Guardiola.

Sterling recognises his manager, who arrived at the club in the summer after the England forward joined, has taught him a lot. His technical understanding of the game has improved beyond all recognition.

With 109 goals and 56 assists in 320 Premier League appearances, Sterling has confirmed his status as one of the most effective domestic performers.

Only former City team-mates Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero – and ex-Chelsea captain John Terry – have more than four Premier League winners’ medals, excluding the clutch of players who earned theirs during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at Manchester United.

By any definition, Sterling’s time at City has been a success.

However, he does not want to become a bit-part player. He is still ambitious and believes he can be a significant figure in a club competing for the biggest prizes.

And this is where the dilemma lies.

Of City’s multitude of brilliant attacking players, only Bernardo Silva started significantly more Premier League games last season – 33 to Sterling’s 23.

Phil Foden started one more and £100m man Jack Grealish one fewer.

But Erling Haaland’s summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund appears to change the dynamic at City.

Having waited for so long and then, including all the additional elements beyond the actual £51.2m transfer fee, spent so much on a striker capable of what Guardiola calls “sniffing” the chances his side have failed to take at points over the past few seasons, it seems unlikely Haaland will not be a starter, especially in the biggest games.

Sterling was on the bench against Villa on the final day and in the two Champions League semi-final meetings with Real Madrid his contribution amounted to 28 minutes – all but seven of them after City had fallen behind in the tie and were chasing the game.

It is worth noting he started three games – including both against his former club Liverpool – in that mouth-watering four-game spell that also contained the two-legged Champions League quarter-final win against Atletico Madrid, so it is not as though Guardiola has been easing Sterling out.

But the England forward cannot feel confident of his place. And, one way or another, within the next 12 months he will commit to the deal that will probably define his career.

Raheem Sterling shakes hands with Thiago Silva
Sterling has played 14 times against Chelsea for Manchester City, scoring three times

Real Madrid and Chelsea are the clubs mentioned most often around Sterling.

Having missed out on Kylian Mbappe, it is difficult to imagine the Spanish champions letting the summer pass without making an alternative “galactico” signing in attack.

    Would Sterling fit the bill?

That is a matter of debate but he would fit into a team where Karim Benzema is turning in performances at a level that defies his veteran status.

Chelsea are likely to have a vacancy in attack given Romelu Lukaku’s almost certain exit.

Sterling would not be a like-for-like replacement for the Belgian, but he was used as a false nine on occasions by Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel evidently prefers a more fluid attack than one with a battering ram at its head.

On the face of it, though, both clubs offer the chance to compete for the biggest prizes.

For Chelsea, however, there has to be a question mark until the new ownership works out its business model and what kind of transfer strategy it will employ, given it almost certainly will not involve losing £1.5bn as Roman Abramovich famously did.

The alternative is to remain where he is, which raises one of two options.

The first is to try to negotiate a new deal with City. Sterling is already very well paid due to the contract he signed in 2018 and the club’s willingness to engage will be an indication of how much Guardiola wants him around.

The other option is to let his contract run out, which would see him become one of the most sought-after free transfers of 2023, when the lack of a fee will automatically drive his wage up.

As he continues on his post-season break – and thinks ahead to the start of a new campaign – Sterling has a lot to mull over.

One thing is for certain, whatever path he chooses, it will be big news.

  • Premier League fixtures: Man City away to West Ham, Liverpool at Fulham, Forest at Newcastle

Champions Manchester City face West Ham away on the opening weekend of a 2022-23 Premier League campaign that will include a mid-season break for the World Cup in Qatar.

There will be no top-flight games after the weekend of 12-13 November until 26 December because of the World Cup.

There are no meetings between the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ on weekend of 12-13 November – the one before the World Cup – following a request by the Football Association.

England will meet up on 14 November before flying to Qatar the following day.

Special arrangements have been made to allow more time between games played across the three festive match rounds.

This will allow squads greater time to recover. Previously clubs were given a minimum of 48 hours between matches.

After fixtures on 26-27 December, the following match round will be played across 29, 30 and 31 December. The New Year match round will be played on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 January.

It starts a week earlier than normal – 75 days after the final day of the 2021-22 campaign – and finishes a week later than usual on 28 May.

Fifa, world football’s governing body, has already stipulated that players must be released on 14 November for the World Cup.

It means the mid-season break will last more than six weeks.

There will be 16 matchdays before Qatar – five in August, three in September, six in October and two in November.

Liverpool host Man City on 15 October

Manchester City, crowned 2021-22 champions after a dramatic final-day win over Aston Villa, are favourites to retain their title after signing forward Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £51.2m.

Haaland, 21, is set to make his Premier League debut at West Ham before City host Bournemouth and then travel to Newcastle.

Liverpool, who finished one point behind the champions in 2021-22, host City on 15 October, with the return fixture at Etihad Stadium on 1 April.

After opening the season at Newcastle, Nottingham Forest host West Ham before travelling to Everton.

The first Manchester derby of the season is on 1 October at Etihad Stadium, with United hosting their neighbours on 14 January.

Arsenal host the first north London derby of the season on 1 October with the return at Tottenham also on 14 January.

The first Merseyside derby of 2022-23 is at Everton on 3 September with Liverpool hosting the Toffees on 11 February.

    Opening weekend stats

    • With Arsenal launching the 2022-23 season at Crystal Palace, it will be the third-successive season the Gunners are starting the Premier League campaign with a London derby.
    • Promoted Bournemouth host Aston Villa on the opening weekend. The Cherries’ first-ever Premier League game in August 2015 was a 1-0 home defeat to Villa.
    • Everton are unbeaten in their opening Premier League match in the past 10 seasons (W4 D6).
    • Despite relegation in 2020-21, Fulham were unbeaten across both Premier League games against Liverpool that season, drawing 1-1 at home and winning 1-0 at Anfield.
    • Among current Premier League sides, Southampton are on the longest winless run in their opening Premier League matches of the season (P8 D4 L4).
    • Manchester United will be opening a top-flight season against Brighton and Hove Albion for the first time in their history.

  • De Bruyne scores four to send Man City clear

Kevin de Bruyne’s stunning four-goal haul helped Manchester City thump Wolves and restored their three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side now need only four points from their final two fixtures to ensure they will finish above Liverpool and win their fourth title in five seasons.

De Bruyne has played a central role in all of those previous triumphs but this was an individual display that must rank among the finest of his stellar collection in a City shirt.

The Belgian started the move that led to his side’s opener, and finished it too, running on to Bernardo Silva’s pass to slot home.

Wolves did not take long to respond, with a rapid counter-attack ending when Pedro Neto found Leander Dendoncker in space on the edge of the box to fire past Ederson.

This was De Bruyne’s stage, however, and he quickly put his side back in front. Again, he played a part in the build-up too, and was in the right place to smash in the rebound after Jose Sa beat Raheem Sterling to his pass.

His third goal – again with his so-called weaker left foot – was the pick of the bunch, and saw him drive towards the edge of the area and curl into the bottom corner.

De Bruyne’s hat-trick was his first for City and at 24 minutes was the third-quickest in Premier League history.

He celebrated in style by copying the meditation celebration of his soon-to-be team-mate Erling Haaland, who City reached an agreement to sign this week, but he was not finished yet.

City came out for the second half looking for more goals to improve their goal difference, which was already three better than Liverpool’s before kick-off.

Raheem Sterling thought he had extended their lead when he ran clear and beat Sa but an offside flag cut short his celebrations.

It was left to De Bruyne to make it 4-1, typically making no mistake when a Phil Foden cross was deflected into his path and finding the bottom corner with his first right-footed effort of the night.

More chances followed, with Foden hitting the post and Sterling missing an easy chance but eventually someone else did get in on the act, with Sterling tapping into an empty net after Sa denied Joao Cancelo.

This was still the De Bruyne show, however. City are not over the line yet, and their next test is an awkward trip to West Ham on Sunday, but on this evidence they will take some stopping.

  • Man City announce plans for David Silva’s statue at Etihad Stadium

Manchester City have announced plans for a statue of Spanish playmaker David Silva at Etihad Stadium.

Silva’s successful 10-year spell at City came to an end after Saturday’s Champions League defeat by Lyon.

Signed from Valencia in 2010, the midfielder, 34, made 436 appearances and helped City win 14 trophies.

“David is a transformational player, a quiet leader who has inspired everyone around him,” said City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

“David’s statue will act as a lasting reminder of the wonderful moments that he gave us, not only as an incredible footballer, but as an inspiring ambassador who represented this football club with great dignity at all times.”

The statue will be unveiled in 2021, along with another tribute dedicated to former City captain Vincent Kompany, who left the club last year and announced earlier on Monday he was retiring from playing.

Silva’s contribution will also be commemorated by the naming of a training pitch and mosaic in his honour at City’s training ground.

Later on Monday, Silva posted a farewell letter to City fans, saying the club had left an “indelible mark” on his life and career.

“I look back and it is clear I could not have made a better decision than to accept City’s proposal to join their project back in 2010,” he said.

Silva made 309 Premier League appearances, scoring 60 goals and playing an instrumental part in City’s four title wins in 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2019.

In domestic cup competitions, he played 57 times and won two FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields.

Silva holds the record for the most European appearances for City, having played 70 Champions League matches over the past decade.

The former Spain international, who was in the squads to win the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, has not yet announced where he will play next season.

Italian side Lazio are reported to have offered him a three-year contract.

  • Sterling-inspired Man City leave Watford vulnerable to relegation

Watford failed to ease their relegation fears in the wake of Nigel Pearson’s surprise sacking as they were hammered by a Raheem Sterling-inspired Manchester City.

Pearson became the Hornets’ third managerial casualty of the campaign on Monday, leaving Under-23 coach Hayden Mullins and his assistant Graham Stack in charge for their final two games.

And they could hardly have had a tougher first assignment than against City, who completed the double over them with this win, at an aggregate score of 12-0 – a joint Premier League record for one team against another in a single season.

Sterling took the game away from the home side before half-time, firing in a rising shot to open the scoring before doubling the advantage by following up his own saved penalty – awarded for a foul on him by Will Hughes.

Phil Foden added a third after Ben Foster had parried a Sterling shot before Aymeric Laporte nodded in from Kevin de Bruyne’s free-kick.

It is second-placed City’s fourth successive league win.

Having won back-to-back games against Norwich and Newcastle, Watford have now lost two in a row and remain just a place and three points above the relegation zone.

A Villa victory over Arsenal later on Tuesday will mean the Hornets drop into the bottom three going into the season’s final day on Sunday, with their fate no longer in their own hands.

  • No Bribe: Meet the £20,000-a-day Lawyer who made Manchester City’s ban overturned

Manchester City have successfully had their European Ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

The English giants were handed a Two year ban earlier this year by UEFA after being found guilty of breaking of club licensing and financial fair play regulations as well as overstating the Sponsorship Revenue.

Manchester therefore hired a £20,000-a-day lawyer to appeal against then ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sports. David Pannick QC is the man City hired to help them have the ban overturned and he has successfully achieved it.

The 63 year old is one of the best lawyers in the United Kingdom and has helped in great cases in UK. Panick has helped block Brexit twice. In 2016, Panick successfully stopped Theresa May from taking Great Britain out of the European Union without Parliamentary consent.

He also achieved success last year when a case was taken to court by Mrs Miller after declaring that Boris Johnson had given the Queen unlawful advice as he wanted to prorogue Parliament.

David Pannick is not new in Manchester City cases as in 2013, he represented Manchester City at the Appeal Court to force former boss Joe Royle to pay back £467,000 in compensation and legal costs.

Panick has now helped Manchester City have their European Ban overturned and the Citizens will now participate in the Champions League next season.
